I actually got a comment that was VERY similar to this!!! Someone (I forgot who) said, "I'm gonna think of cult brainwashing instead of sci-fi brainwashing for callie for my own sanity."

From my knowledge, the term brainwashing has always been this general term to describe mind control plots and shit like that and people use it poorly and wrongly. And THAT'S where my anger comes from. Because people wanna make Callie's arc in Splatoon 2 way worse, more disgusting and less interesting. It's so SOOOOO annoying and disregards any sort of arc that Callie could go through....

The word is either used in cults, or military experiments, or family drama of "you're brainwashing my child!" Or sci fi lazy bullshit where it's just "mind control and you lose all of your autonomy and memories" aka Winter Soldier, Widowmaker, etc. It's such a general term that has a trillion different meanings and it's fucking frustrating as hell.

If I try to look at Callie’s story through the lens of "standard" brainwashing where it's just psychological manipulation and propaganda from the Octarians and Octavio, considering that he is known to use music and other things as motivation to boost Octarians.... then... I actually wouldn't have a problem with people using that word... maybe...

Because Callie STILL had some amount of agency and autonomy, even with the shades on, she couldn't have been forced to do anything against her will cause of how hypnosis works. She still heard out the Octarians and listened to their propaganda. Was Octavio still in the wrong? Yeah! DUHHHH!!! NO FUCKING SHIT SHERLOCK!!! HE MANIPULATED A MENTALLY ILL SQUID WOMAN!!! YOU THINK IM RESOLVING THAT MAN OF BLAME?!?! FUCK NO!!! But in that scenario it's WAYYYY LESS EVIL than what the fuck people and Nintendo tried to suggest that they did. I dont wanna believe that Octavio immediately grabbed and then "brainwashed" Callie with the shades after she said "okay fine I'll hear you out." And then "kidnapped" her and her memories were wiped... Ugh. (Fucking Nintendo bro god I hate them...)

It would also help explain WHY she doesn't feel any sort of trauma or suffering from those events and why she finds the Octarians cute and why she went with Octavio to the Low Water party. She probably felt sorry for the Octarians and wanted to help them willingly because her life beforehand was shitty and she was alone... Octavio probably didn't need to do much to convince her, too, which is kinda sad... She probably doesn't feel regret or pain because, well, she was going through a rough period and she wanted an escape, so the Octarians, in her mind, were the only way out...

However.... I can't see that word the same anymore, and every time that I see it, I ALWAYS think of the bullshit sci-fi definition and people just LOVEEEE TO USE IT AS A CATCH ALL TERM!!!! IT'S REALLY REALLYYYYYY ANNOYING!!!!

That word has actually caused me physical reactions when I hear it, like I was in a family dinner and one of my parents used that word and like... I dont know what it is I mean. i joined the streams without any context (well listen i was there for the start. did not know it was but i saw like ryan and mark at the laptop and louise coming over and reveal of her playing games. except i didnt know who they were at the time lOl. thought it was cool but wasnt keeping up with it. then i ended up on the stream where nicole brings us to visit her grandparents and they're just fighting and it was raining and then theres the reveal with mark's mom being dead [well missing but]. and then we went to prom and cathy died and im just like what the fuck.)

Hello~ anything more that you'd like to share about the midnight romance in hagwon? Its audience on Tumblr (for now) is not big now. The lack of comments is killing me because I think we had various topics to discuss on in 2 episodes.

i used to like, really analyze and get really obsessed with shows but it wasn't really healthy for me tbh and that habit kinda stopped when i got deeper into my faith.

i still notice stuff tho so:

midnight romance in hagwon is not a show for people who are not into character-driven pieces. every character in this show has a story and, even if they are not as central to the story as the main characters, every one has a history and everyone gets their due. all the characters matter in this show and there is no such thing as a filler scene because every scene is meant for the viewer to understand the world that is currently being built. as someone who can only really write character-driven stories, this is my jam and butter. also, people who like shows that tell you to your face what's going on will not like this show. these people are ACTORS. every micro-expression matters. every glance of the eye is meant to signal a change in thought. people are obsessed with wi ha joon (as they should be tbh), but jung ryeo won EATS as the female lead and alot of people are kinda hating on her after the second episode. if you don't know media literacy, please do not watch this show. actually scratch that. this is a great show to learn about media literacy. if you dont CARE about media literacy, pls do not touch this show. this is not a show for foreigners - this is clearly a korean drama and everything is interconnected. the romance is in the background for now and we are smack-dab in education system jargon. as someone who knows nothing about the education system in korea, i still can pick up context clues and i am willing to listen to viewers who either experienced the education system or j know their research for things that don't make sense to me. if you are not willing to be patient, don't want a background romance (at this point), idk don't want the plot to be about the actual setting (which is so weird ngl yall), then this might not be the show for you.

the visuals of this show are absolutely beautiful. people, places, the way things are shot - everything is meant to feel real and like slice of life because we are literally watching someone's life!!! there's not much of a focus on the past rn, which i LOVE, because the viewer is forced to be present with the characters!!! Um, is this true? I am a person who holds a very neutral viewpoint. I always thought the Hannibal fandom had similar perspectives, but now this blog is presenting very different views. I can't help but think that maybe sometimes they are correct😶‍🌫️

Also i cannot say this enough tbh i side with mr. freeze every time.... i may be a sucker for romance but that man was trying his hardest to save his wife and from what ive seen he does that in every iteration of batman, like he becomes a villain and gets into illegal shit because his wifes sick and idk man..... like even if he is a villain i really empathize with him??? in the playthrough i offered to keep his wife safe and alive and i took mercy on him when he got infected with the virus and i froze him, like i have confidence in him idk.... i know he probably died bc it turned out the reason the riddler survived was because of the cure that also made him go insane but like my fingers are CROSSED!!!!!

also will say the only thing id change was i was kinda iffy about taking that selfie with john at the funeral, like i didnt do it but idk..... afterwards i thought abt taking that back like dude i NEVER WRONGED that man!!!!!! he was my POOKIE!!!!!! and i lowkey feel like him going crazy in the vigilante route was pushed for by the writers bc it felt a lil.... idk..... like forced but i get it its part of the story line......./silly

my friend played the villain!joker route and from what ive heard its EVEN GAYER and they let me watch them play the last 15 minutes of the villain route so i could see how differently they handled selina and that doll scene was kinda.... idkkkk 👀 like heyyyyy/f

i also heard theres a line from harley in the villain joker route about how he could never get over me and how john always liked me better than her which was SO satisfying because i made batman so jealous over her and john hanging out like im ngl i was so up harleys ass in s2

OH OH other thing id change, i wouldnt sip from harleys slushie, i didnt understand why she was offering it to me but now that i know i wouldnt take it ngl, making john jealous was not worth that slushie !!!!!

I’m so interested in your take on but daddy I love him. The song bothers me because it’s clearly about/inspire by the Matty backlash, which was so justified. That man should literally be in prison. But if you can ignore that, and I know that’s a big if but it’s a little easier now that he’s not on the scene. I do like the song and the eras tour performance of it as a sort of slam on church-going do-gooders who don’t accept anything but what they themselves know to be good and pure.

oooh this is interesting cuz I’ve never rlly had the stomach to think abt it outside of the matty context! It’s not that bad of a song at least in the first half, but then it suddenly gets so much more extreme in the second half. Tbh i still dont like it much overall cuz:

I think the song goes off the rails around the ‘judgemental creeps’ line. Like I get a big theme in the song is going against/ignoring what others have to say, so I still get the ‘not wanting to listen to all the bitching and moaning’ line but then the next verse is her doubling down and dragging them (‘vipers in empath’s clothing,�� ‘sanctimonious’ etc) and although it’s just a few lines there’s so much potent vitriol packed in them. I think it’s esp jarring compared to her more subtle expression of the romance (which I’m fine with btw! for me less is more yk). It feels like a bad diss track poorly disguised as a forbidden love song

the tone is veryyy bitter, I’m sorry 😭😭 from the very first verse (“cuz they HATE you”) she fumes about these outsiders in a pretty childish tone too (which I guess fits in the context of a child rebelling against a parent but it’s not like love story which portrays them being kept apart as tragic and hence encourage ppl to root for the speaker - my point being, the childish tone hinders the portrayal of the romantic aspect of the song, so the bitter parts seem more prominent). Around the part i mentioned above ^^ it starts to sound more like a tantrum. The lackluster outro kind of returns the focus back to the relationship but it’s kind of ruined by how she throws in that one last dig (‘wine moms’)

the sentiment feels pretty juvenile. I get feeling irritated by constant scrutiny and unwarranted criticism but it feels very annoying to see the speaker acting like she doesn’t care (soliloquies I’ll never see) when she so clearly does care?? And I don’t mean in real life, i mean the whole verse abt ‘sanctimonious soliloquies’ etc. Like, the vitriol i mentioned earlier plus this being the longest song on the album which is 60% her acting hypocritical in this way. i way way prefer love story because the whole point is abt their love story. I guess the name of this song itself gives it away - it’s more abt her expressing her love for this person to others rather than to the person themselves. On top of that, she acts so petulantly abt what these elders have to say that it just feels exhausting, not compelling

All in all I think it depends what theme/msg you want to get out of the song. Personally for these kinds of songs I prefer the ‘loving against all odds’ msg over the ‘fuck the odds’ msg. Like reputation is one of my fav albums of all time and I think the songs on there do a much better job of expressing this duality (eg ciwyw, don’t blame me, dwoht). It might be because the underlying message of her being in love is more consistent there, which is what I prefer. Music is all subjective anyway but these are my thoughts :)

hello, here to share my opinions on troye's new album (sorry if it gets too long) 😌 as i said im absolutely OBSESSED with this album. like i always enjoyed his music, but to show this level of iconography????? CMON????? there is one problem i have with the album tho: every time i try to listen to it from start to finish, i get delayed by the fucking masterpiece that is "one of your girls" :/ every time this song comes on, i have to listen to it at least 5 times. wtf troye???? i would say it's my fave on the album, but that's an understatement. that's the best song of the whole year for me. god. isnt this giving daft punk like hello????? THE MV ALSO?????? 🤯 okay moving on to the other songs sjsjdhdhf u know that i loved all the singles, and they sound even better in the context of the album!! there is not a song i dont enjoy in this album, i couldnt even make a ranking because they are all so good. overall, THE BEATS in this album got me floating in space and shaking my ass at the same time. okay, first of all, i love your thoughts and i couldn't agree more about everything you said! <3 i keep coming back to this album, idk what troye put in it but it's SO addicting aaah! oh i absolutely understand the obsession with "one of your girls" bc GOD, it's amazing. chef's kiss on every level, the lyrics are perfect, the production is 10/10, the mv!!! (and yeeees, the daft punk vibes!!) are you kidding me?!! imo, the mv perfectly shows the transition between this album and troye's previous albums, he's confident, he's serving and he knows what he wants! and that's actually something i love about the whole album, it's very touching to see him being even more mature with his music and SO confident and it feels so freeing! genuinely, i'm so happy and grateful that i grew up with his music, it was veery important to me in my teenage years and it makes me so happy to see him grow as an artist (and person) waaah🥹 and i think that's also why i love this album so much, bc it's another step! im not sure if this will apply to you mate, but when i was 18 i was really fighting to fit in a certain sort of hierarchy and be a certain sort of person. i didnt let go of that when i left my childhood home and i wish i had. dont perform to the standards of your birdcage
