Tour today was with a couple and the lady had a scooter because she suffered from arthritis and was going through a bad day and we were warned but with these things you must never make suppositions, you must wait until you meet the client and speak to them to come to an agreement. But they were such a nice couple and the lady was just eager to do something and the driver and I immediately and on cue went, ma'am don't worry, you're going to see Lisbon and you're going to experience it. We ended up talking just me and her and she was telling me about her friend who suffers from MS and went to Italy and he uses a motorised wheelchair and he rode a gondola! And she said "if he can do it, so can I" and we talked about the importance of inclusivity in tourism and how tourism is for everyone and I told her this is one of things my job teaches me because I learn with people like her and others with limited mobility who hire a driver and a guide and request to see the city and together we come up with a plan. Idk man I know I complain abt people with limited mobility booking walk tours but this wasn't a walk tour, the couple booked a car because they knew their limitations and often walk tours are cheaper and the client is different, and Lisbon is SO inaccessible it was just really enriching to have this conversation and I feel like shit like this is why I like my job despite the headaches companies give me

Alexander (Grimm) - Crossover AU - Chapter 7
“You’re really going in on those books.”
Whenever Nick invited you to the trailer you made a habit of memorizing as many Wesen as you could. Everything about his family’s lineage was almost something from a fairytale. Their abilities, the links it had with their personalities, it was just so carefully configured. You can’t imagine what having a gift like Nick’s feels like.
Taking another sip of your tea, you flip the page, gesturing for him to put the kettle on. You were running low. He just smiled.
“When did I become your maid and what’s with the obsession for tea?”
You stopped for a second, looking down at your cup.
“Hmm, actually I can’t believe I never noticed it before.”
Your father was something of a tea enthusiast. Clearly you’d picked up more than just his skills.
“How’s team Alexander going?”
You roll your eyes.
“For your information we’re making a lot of progress. So far we’ve stopped two corrupted officials, started a treaty with Switzerland and hired some very qualified guards to protect the council. All in all I’d say I’m a really valuable asset.”
“Sounds like fun.”
He clicks on the kettle, and you smile at the electric appliance. He just shakes his head with a laugh.
“I’m starting to think you’re addicted to tea.”
“Addiction implies I can’t stop. I assure you I can stop at any time.”
You take a sip of your drink for good measure. Nick just goes back to the books.
It’s been about a month since you’ve last met with Alexander. It’s not really that uncommon. Since you both have started working together he’s gone weeks on end. He’s busy promoting peace and you have to say that you admire what he’s doing. Especially since you have a general idea of what he’d done in the past. What you’ve gained from being around him is that duty is something he places above everything else. You also know that he's revised a lot of the old views of the council. You have a hunch that Nick has a lot to do with that.
Change wasn’t easy, but he was taking it in stride and thriving.
You admire that, admire him. If only you could get yourself to admit that to him. Since that day in his office you’ve been sneaking some not so subtle glances in his direction when you work together. You can’t get that treble in his voice out of your head and it’s made you a bit awkward. Luckily Alexander isn’t as perceptive as you. He hasn’t picked up on any of it. It’s both infuriating and relieving.
“Burhardt.”
You turn when you hear Nick answer the phone.
“Sure, we can be there in twenty.”
You stand, taking in the urgency of Nick’s tone. He hangs up the phone and you’re already grabbing your jacket.
“What’s wrong?”
“Not sure, the captain says it might be something serious. We won’t know until we get there.”
You don’t need any more explanations. You’re both rushing out of the trailer in record time. The drive there has you anxious. You don’t like not knowing. Nick is going as fast as the traffic will allow. By the time he pulls up to the precinct you’re both out of the car in seconds and rushing through the door. The first person you spot is Wu.
“You know what’s going on?” Nick asks.
Wu nods, guiding you over to Renard’s office.
“From what the captain said, this might be an international problem.”
You don’t like the sound of that.
Nick opens the door the second he’s within reach and you all file in. When you look up, the blond locks catch you a bit off guard.
“Dad?”
Jane smiles widely and before anything else, he reaches out for a hug. You return it happily as he rubs your back.
“I was hoping I could see you under better circumstances.”
He pulls back and you just wait for some kind of explanation.
Now standing in the room with Renard, Nick, Hank, Wu and your father, you know it must be dangerous if the entire squad is here.
“Your friend is in trouble.”
Jane pulls out the letter. You’re a bit confused, because the envelope has a date on it. From what you can tell it’s dated three weeks prior.
“Lisbon and I have been working on a case with Abbott. Someone has been paying off politicians, policemen, even judges to cover up a major trafficking ring. Alexander reached out to me when he noticed the connection between our case and his drug trading minister.”
You just gape.
“Jefferson..”
Jane nods.
“That’s right. He’s been keeping me updated on the case. Lisbon and I have been keeping tags on all his contacts, friends, any and everyone linked. Jefferson was supposed to be charged here in the US, but a week ago he got out. Alexander sent this note in advance as a SOS. The FBI hasn’t been able to reach him for three days.”
You can’t believe it. You take a step back and Nick places a hand on your shoulder.
“We can’t jump to conclusions, he could still be alive.” Nick is trying to be comforting, but that won’t help. You shake your head.
“Damn it this is all my fault. I taunted the bastard now Alexander is paying for it.”
“We can’t make any assumptions. As of right now we need to act like he’s alive. Portland PD and the FBI will be collaborating on this case. We’re at your full disposal, whatever you need.” Renard assures your father.
“From here on out we need to assume that the corruption is widespread, we don’t make any uncalculated moves until we know who we’re dealing with.” Renard advises.
Everyone nods.
“I think Alexander may have already helped with that.” Jane states.
You’re confused, but he opens the folded piece of paper. You stare at the list of names.
“We were working on a rough draft, but Alexander finished the list. These are all the people involved.”
Sean and the others looked stunned. You’re a bit annoyed.
“Damn it dad, why didn’t you lead with that!!”
“I was building up to it.” He shrugs. It’s clear that some things would never change.
“Most of these people are slimy, so they’ll squeal. None of them have any interest in doing jail time. We can use these names to find my daughter’s boyfriend.”
“H-He’s not my boyfriend!!”
“Your face says differently. You’re carrying a little torch for him aren’t you?”
“S-Stop mentalizing me!”
“What, you used to like it when you were younger. You thought I could read minds. You were so adorable looking all serious. I miss those times.”
Your cheeks flush as you glare at your father. Everyone else present just watches the interaction. Nick is a bit impressed. He’d never seen you squirm before. Jane was reading you quite the same as how he’d seen you read other people countless times.
“So are we going to get to work or are we going to sit around here discussing your crush.”
“I don’t have a crush!!”
This case will be a challenge for obvious reasons.

Day 41 Leiria was a surprise
Today I headed out early to catch the Rede Expressos bus to Leiria to pick up a hire car. As an aside, the local public transport is not great. I'm using a national bus company to travel what I consider a short distance, and the frequency is not great. I did a little research about what I might see in Leiria but didn't have high expectations. I'm now googling vegetarian/vegan restaurants in the hope I might get better coffee! But don't worry in Porto and Lisbon I have several options showing on my newly recommended Kava app!
Sadly at the bus station a woman was being prevented from getting on (I'm assuming) our bus by a man. He had her positioned against a wall and covered by his frame. It was clear to me that had she tried to make a run for it, things would escalate. She was trying to negotiate herself away from him. I might have approached in an English speaking country, but sensing I would not be understood, I instead went inside the office and told the male worker "Policia" and pointed outside. He looked and said "I don't think so!" I insisted "Sim, Policia, 112". I walked out and waited for a short time before I really had to get on the bus. I could see the worker came out and the woman said something to him and then yelled "Obrigada". I suspect he called the police, or was intending to, and either they or he asked her if she wanted help and she declined but said thank you. There really is a long way to go!
Forty minutes later I arrived in Leiria and headed for the mercado municipale. This was the cleanest mercado I have been to. So clean I used their toilets three times as I criss-crossed the city. There was an antique/boot market opposite where I purchased more earrings and a Marilyn Monroe broach (Portugal loves Marilyn and Frida Kahlo). The stall holders spoke great english and told me they'd been to Australia several times, and lived in East Timor for 6 years.
Next stop a walk up to the castle, then on to the coffee shop. Along the way I ducked in and out of interesting clothing and homewares shops, stumbled across street performers advertising the Festival atol João Moital, looked into an art gallery that was the former national bank, made it to the café for a delicious apple cake and great looking coffee (but sadly made on UHT milk) and then headed for Sixt car rentals. A little later than expected and luckily I got there before 12.30 as that was closing time. Three other people were ahead of me and no staff member in site. The poor man was on his own and after sorting paperwork for each person, then had to walk quite a distance to bring the cars in. I was getting quite concerned I would miss my nail appointment back in Nazaré.
One benefit from being the last customer and kept waiting was sweet talking the man into giving me another car after he asked if a station wagon would be ok, god no! I don't have a small car, but it's an auto at least. After discovering I didn't have the right cord for Apple Play and knowing I would be late for my nail appointment, I punched in Pingo Doce to google maps. At least I knew I could park there and it wasn't down some narrow streets. After missing a right turn (yep I've also forgotten my rights and lefts) and losing 5 minutes I'm finally on my way. On the toll road the limit is 120km. I caught myself doing 133km at one point and most cars were speeding past me! Luckily it wasn't busy. I gather the €2.75 toll might be a bit pricey for some locals.
I was going to head out in the car again to Alcobaça to see a recommended monastery, but it closed at 6pm. I knew there were folk festival events down at the beach so I headed there instead, and did a long walk.
Looking forward to celebrating Mother's Day in Tomar tomorrow. I understand it might be a bit medieval.

Lisbon - Day 8 - Walking Around
Friday 10/6
We are leaving Lisbon for Porto tomorrow and starting to prepare for our train trip. I came back to our apartment after emptying the garbage and our electronic front door wouldn’t unlock. Luckily MaryEllen was still inside. It is a keyless entry and for some reason the green light turned on after entering the correct code, but the door latch didn’t respond by unlocking. After about 1/2 hour of communication back and forth with our host and playing around with the lock, it started working again. The rest of the day we were concerned that the lock may malfunction again. Luckily the host provided us with a way to get a key to manually unlock the door if it failed again. So much for IOT (Internet of Things)!
We need to buy our train tickets still for Porto. We attempted to do it online but the web site kept switching between English and Portuguese, making it very difficult to understand how to use the site. Since there was a train station two blocks from our apartment, we decided just to walk over and get our tickets there.
Today we walked up the tree-lined Avenida de Libberdade to the Parque Edwardo VII. Avenida Libberdade is where a number of upscale retail stores are located (eg, Rolex, Louis Vuitton, Guess, Boss), plus one of the areas where American expats tend to live.
Real estate is not cheap in Lisbon. This 4 bedroom 4 bath apartment with parking for 3 cars is for sale for $2.6 million.
We stopped and had a picnic lunch under the trees at the edge of the park. After lunch we walked though the park. Supposedly there were two Pickleball courts there, but we couldn’t find them. We found the tennis courts, but no Pickleball. I guess we not moving to Portugal :-).
At the opposite end of the park was El Corte Ingles, a large seven story upscale department store. We went inside and found a luxurious selection of high-end designer merchandise, even surpassing that of Bloomingdale's in the US. It provided our first glimpse into the lifestyles of Lisbon's more affluent residents.
We then decided to continue walking in a new neighborhood so we could check out a restaurant that sounded good. We got lost a number of times even with the aid of Google maps. Below is some street art we saw along the way.
During our walk we saw some roosters struting around at a park we passed. In Portugal, the rooster symbolizes honesty and good fortune, stemming from the tale of the “Galo de Barcelos” (Rooster of Barcelos). This 17th-century legend tells of a man falsely accused of theft. He boldly proclaimed that a roasted rooster at the dinner table would crow at his execution to prove his innocence. Miraculously, the roaster rooster stood up on the serving plate and crowed, and as a result the man's life was spared.
Tuk tuks provide unique way to explore the Lisbon, especially with its narrow, hilly streets which are challenging for larger vehicles. Tuk tuks can be hired by tourists for guided tours around Lisbon.
Back at our apartment, we took one last view of of the Monumento aos Restauradores and the surround area just before sunset from our living room window.
For dinner we had chicken Peri Peri at Bonjardim Restaurante.

2000 - Elton John
Elton John threw a tantrum when he was set to appear at a sell-out show at the Estoril Casino near Lisbon. Elton was unhappy after the audience were slow in leaving a VIP dinner before the concert, Elton left the building and flew home on his private jet without playing a note.
1985 - MTV Video Music Awards
'We Are The World' won Best Group Video and the Viewer's Choice at the MTV Video Music Awards in New York. Don Henley's 'The Boys Of Summer' video won four trophies, including Best Video. Bruce Springsteen's 'I'm On Fire' gets the nod for Best Male Video and Tina Turner won Best Female Video for 'What's Love Got To Do With It'.
1975 - Janis Ian
Janis Ian's ‘At Seventeen,’ a song about dealing with unrealistic standards of beauty (not typical hit song material at the time), peaked at No.3 on the US chart for the first of two weeks.
1969 - John Lennon
John Lennon & Yoko Ono flew to Canada to perform at the Rock & Roll Revival Show in Toronto, Canada. The band members Eric Clapton, Klaus Voormann and drummer Alan White were put together so late that they had to rehearse on the plane from England. Also making an appearance at the concert were Chuck Berry, Gene Vincent, Bo Diddley, The Doors and Alice Cooper. Lennon later released his performance as the Live Peace in Toronto 1969 album.
1967 - The Beatles
The Beatles formed an electronics company called Fiftyshapes, Ltd. appointing John Alexis Mardas (Magic Alex) to be the company's director. Alex claimed he could build a 72-track tape machine, instead of the 4-track at Abbey Road (this never materialised). One of his more outrageous plans was to replace the acoustic baffles around Ringo Starr's drums with an invisible sonic force field. George Harrison later said that employing Mardas was "the biggest disaster of all time."
1965 - Paul McCartney
The Paul McCartney song 'Yesterday' was released as a Beatles single in the US. McCartney's vocal and acoustic guitar together with a string quartet essentially made for the first solo performance of the band. The final recording was so different from other works by The Beatles that the band members vetoed the release of the song as a single in the United Kingdom. (However, it was issued as a single there in 1976.)
1964 - The Rolling Stones
During a UK tour two dozen rugby players were hired as 'a human crash barrier' at a Rolling Stones gig at the Liverpool Empire. The 'human chain' disappeared under a wave of 5,000 fans as the Stones took to the stage.
1960 - Payola
The Federal Communications act in the USA was amended to outlaw payments of cash or gifts in exchange for airplay of records.
1960 - Ray Peterson
A campaign was started in the UK to ban the American hit 'Tell Laura I Love Her' by Ray Peterson. The song was being denounced in the press as likely to inspire a teen-age "glorious death cult." The story told of a lovesick youngster who drives in a stock car race to win the hand of his sweetheart. He crashes and just before dying, groans out the words of the title.
1958 - Cliff Richard
Cliff Richard made his British TV debut on Jack good's 'Oh Boy', performing 'Move It'. Before he was allowed to appear on the show, Richard was ordered to remove his sideburns.

11/22/63 - Stephen King
On November 22, 1963, three shots rang out in Dallas, President Kennedy died, and the world changed. What if you could change it back? Stephen King’s heart-stoppingly dramatic new novel is about a man who travels back in time to prevent the JFK assassination—a thousand page tour de force. Following his massively successful novel Under the Dome, King sweeps readers back in time to another moment—a real life moment—when everything went wrong: the JFK assassination. And he introduces readers to a character who has the power to change the course of history. Jake Epping is a thirty-five-year-old high school English teacher in Lisbon Falls, Maine, who makes extra money teaching adults in the GED program. He receives an essay from one of the students—a gruesome, harrowing first person story about the night 50 years ago when Harry Dunning’s father came home and killed his mother, his sister, and his brother with a hammer. Harry escaped with a smashed leg, as evidenced by his crooked walk. Not much later, Jake’s friend Al, who runs the local diner, divulges a secret: his storeroom is a portal to 1958. He enlists Jake on an insane—and insanely possible—mission to try to prevent the Kennedy assassination. So begins Jake’s new life as George Amberson and his new world of Elvis and JFK, of big American cars and sock hops, of a troubled loner named Lee Harvey Oswald and a beautiful high school librarian named Sadie Dunhill, who becomes the love of Jake’s life—a life that transgresses all the normal rules of time.

Day 48, 7th Oct, Berlin
This morning I caught a bus around the corner from my hotel. I buy a day card each day, which costs about €7, and it lets you travel on any form of transport all over the city, so great value. Bus 265 took me to where I was going. This bus continues on to Tempelhof Park which is where the huge impressive Russian Memorial is located but I didn’t have time to revisit that today. On the street I came across some more ‘stumbling stones’. These people died in Auschwitz and Chelmno.
This was the building the stones were in front of. The stones are a real reminder of what happened on this spot during the war.
I was in this location as I wanted to see this particular street art painted by the identical Brazilian twins Otavio and Gustavo Pandolfo who are best known for their large-scale installations and murals depicting strangely dressed and unusually proportioned, yellow-skinned figures. Influenced primarily by their upbringing in São Paolo, they first started developing their recognizable style at the age of twelve. I have now seen their work in Łódź, Vilnius, Lisbon, Vancouver and now Berlin.
The U Bahn also rans through this area up on raised lines. I was on my way to the East Side Gallery across the river after seeing the painting.
The Oberbeurn Bridge which is considered one of the most attractive bridges in Germany. The towers were badly damaged in the war. The bridge was one of the dividing lines between east and west. The bridge in East territory.
The river was in East Berlin, as well.
The East West Gallery runs along the river in this area. The birth of Berlin’s street art scene can be traced back to 1961 when the Soviet Union erected the Berlin wall, separating East Germany from West Germany. Due to the symbolic significance of the wall as a divisive medium, it became the obvious place for the citizens of Berlin to express their opinions and frustrations on a whole range of issues. On the other hand, it was also seen as an exceptionally unattractive eyesore that the people of Berlin felt compelled to do something about. During the Cold War, the West side of the Berlin wall was completely covered in painting, unlike the East side of the wall which remained blank, because people in East Berlin were unable to get close enough to the wall to paint on it. Interestingly, since the wall fell in 1989, a lot of new art was added to the East side of wall in the 1990’s, allowing viewers to trace the historical and political change that occurred in Europe by comparing and contrasting the different themes depicted on either side of the wall.
The paintings seemed a bit different to when I was here before. I know there has been some work done to preserve the almost 30 year old paintings in some cases but there looked to be new ones and not all about the wall.
This one is probably the most iconic. It has definitely been given a facelift. It’s of Breszhnev kissing Honecker.
Some that I remembered from last time were a bit hard to see as there was a new building going up and boards were in place along part of the wall.
Mercedes Benz dominates the city a bit. The company brings in a lot of money as well as owning a lot if real estate. The areana is across the road from the Gallery.
New work like this one was about Amestry International.
From the Gallery I caught a U Bahn then the No. 100 bus that goes from Alexander Platz up the main strip to the Brandenburg Gate. The statues on the River Spree.
One of the Museums in this area.
The Dom.
The University.
The Brandenburg Gate.
Very close to the Brandenburg Gate is the Jewish Memorial.
It’s just all grey blocks of different heights and sizes on undulating land. Very unique.
From the Memorial I walked to the Sony Centre at Potsdam Platz. I had never seen it close up.
Quite spectacular the space inside.
The roof is amazing. I spent a bit of time in here.
Back on the streets a climate change demonstration was going on. All very peaceful.
Mostly young people there with a big police presence.
All over Berlin you come across information boards about some historical event in the past. The Germans don’t hide their history.
These cars where used extensively in East Berlin and are now a novelty. You can hire them for a ride around the city.
This is part of the wall at the Topography of Terror.
The ballon was taking people up high for a birds eye view.
Wherever the Wall was in Berlin it is now indicated by stone work and bronze plaques.
Checkpoint Charlie.
I took the opportunity to have my photo taken. Usually there are people dressed in Us and Russian uniforms you pay to have your photo with. Maybe they have stopped that.
This is the way it looked in the day. A very tense location.
The sign at Checkpoint Charlie.
This girl had an interesting tale. I came across her putting down a row of dirt and a row of seeds. It symbolises the joining together and growth that comes when things combine. Eg seeds and dirt. She is an artist and tries to do 9 each day. I can’t remember how many she wants to do all up but it’s between her parents home and the refugee camp they were in when they arrived in Berlin from Russia. She was 9 when they came in 1995. She told all about her family and that she doesn’t know whether she feels a Russian or German. A common issue for many new migrants. It’s amazing what you come across walking the streets.
I finally made it to the Jewish Museum. I have never been there before. The front of the Museum is very different from the newer building that houses most of the exhibits.
The Halocaust Tower.
Slanting walls, sharp angles, gaping voids. The architecture creates its own symbolic language for the history of the Jews in Germany. The Axis of the Halocaust and The Axis of Exile portray the persecution and murder of Jews during the Nazi era, as well as the escape from Germany into exile.
The Garden of Exile is made up of 49 concrete slabs positioned on sloping ground. The trees growing on top are a symbol of hope.
The Memory Void is dedicated to the victims of war. 10,000 heavy iron plates are cut to resemble faces. You can walk on the faces and they give off a clanging sound which is a bit chilling.
The grey futuristic look of the new building which houses most of the museum.
A lighter exhibition of photographs from the West Bank of Isreal was also in the museum.
Some great photos.
The lights in the cafe had Hebrew written inside which made a great pattern with its reflection.
From the museum I could catch the No 248 bus back to the hotel but I went further to Alexander Platz for another look around and then the bus back. Another long interesting day. Heading north again tomorrow on the train.

Prepare for a voice-enabled era! "In November I attended the Web Summit Conference in Lisbon for the first time, where I heard a lot of great stories and interesting presentations on topics about voice-enabled design, from self-driving cars to smart healthcare apps. One little one stuck especially in my mind. On the second day, I went to a talk by x.ai CEO Dennis Mortensen about conversational interfaces. They created a meeting scheduling bot called Andrew, which can send out emails on the user’s behalf and also receives communication from the user via email. Mortensen explained how they designed Andrew’s emails. After several iterations, they decided to hire drama teachers to write the different messages. This allowed them to create the perfect style. After the talk, I just had to constantly think about this question: As a UX designer, should I start building design skills for voice-enabled devices or conversational interface design too? Are clever drama teachers going to replace me?" Read Luca's full story here: https://uxstudioteam.com/ux-blog/voice-enabled-design/?utm_source=Social&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=ownsocial
