Hollywood, we need your help.
The shows you make and the movies you produce often shine a light on the events around us. They help us make sense of the world and they highlight those moments of heroism and hope that lift our spirits during the darkest of times. But right now, we need more than your artistry. Right now, we need your action.
Here’s the reality: Nurses, doctors and all healthcare providers are used to supplying care in the toughest of situations. We are accustomed to working 80-plus hours a week, making tough decisions, and putting our patients and families interests above our own. The healthcare provider community is defined by its compassion, resilience and sacrifice. But, we have never faced anything like the coronavirus.
Providers are having to take care of patients with limited personal protective equipment, and what we have now is dwindling.
We are reusing masks that we normally would not reuse. We are avoiding eating and drinking during our shifts for fear of needing to touch the masks and contaminating ourselves. N95 respirators that we typically use for any potential airborne infections are being conserved only for the highest risk procedures. What’s most anxiety-provoking is what the next few weeks will bring. We have so little now, will we have any protection as the surge of coronavirus patients continues?
We are hearing about colleagues around the country who already have become infected, those who are in critical condition on ventilators, and our hearts sink. We know what their families are going through, we know that this means fewer patients may get care, and we worry about what this means for us as we prepare for our next shift on the frontlines.
That’s what we are faced with, and we are writing this not to scare folks, but to ask for help from one of the most creative, innovative, inspirational sectors of society- entertainers. Here’s what we are asking:
We need you to lead by example and to motivate your fans to comply with social distance.
Lots of entertainers are already posting on Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram about their isolation and social distancing experiences, and bolstering their fans with heartening messages. We need more of this, and we need young folks in particular to understand the seriousness of what we are dealing with. Directed outreach to fans about why crowds on beaches, for example, are a bad idea may motivate them to behave more responsibly. Sharing examples of providers on the front lines on a daily basis, can humanize the struggle.
We need you to donate what you have and encourage others to donate personal protective equipment/ sanitizer/supplies.
We need personal protective equipment, specifically masks, N95 respirators, sanitizer, gloves, gowns, now. We need you to donate what you have to your local hospitals and share your donation experiences with others. We also need you to encourage your fans, co-workers, family members to donate whatever they have in terms of needed supplies to their local hospitals. Even a small donation of 10 or 20 masks can help a whole unit of providers protect themselves for a shift. A small donation of hand sanitizer may mean days of providers being able to employ recommended practices of hand hygiene and protect themselves and patients.
You may have contacts in the nail industry, hairdressers, makeup artists who have these supplies. Please encourage them to donate as much as they can. TV shows such as “Pose,” “Station 19,” “The Good Doctor,” and “Grey’s Anatomy” have donated the masks, gowns and gloves they once used as props to medical workers and hospitals in need. If there are supplies left over from other medical dramas sitting around in a storehouse, it’s time to dust them off and ship them out.
We need you think of creative solutions to produce personal protective equipment/ sanitizer/ supplies.
This is a big one. Your industry is incredibly resourceful and creative. Your connections are expansive. Please work with partners in the fashion industry, alcohol beverage industry, and product development to think about how masks, gloves, gowns, sanitizer can be produced to protect providers. Already, some fashion designers have stepped up like Christian Siriano, who is having his team work on mask production for New York City. The Costume Designers Guild has also stepped up to encourage its members to sew masks. Frankly, we need all hands-on deck from the fashion industry. Similarly, if you own or partner with a consumer goods production company, please think about ways you can help. Finally, there are many celebrities with their own liquor brands. Well, alcohol producers and distributors, there are small distilleries already repurposing alcohol for hand sanitizers and donating to hospitals. Please consider whether your vodka or gin line could follow suit.
We need you to utilize your international connections to find and distribute supplies.
You are among the most connected individuals in this country and around the world. There are solutions to this supply chain crunch that involve reaching out to contacts in other countries. Please leverage any and all connections you have to help with production and distribution. If you have partners and friends in other countries that have supply, ask about donations.
We need you to build awareness and advocate with local, state and federal governments, until this crisis abates.
Finally, we will be involved in this crisis for the coming weeks, if not months. Building and maintaining awareness during this critical period will be crucial. We need your help to bolster spirits and inspire others to care about what’s happening in our hospitals and healthcare centers. This also means advocating with all levels of government and continuing to voice concerns.
We will continue to care for you, your families and loved ones. We are not embarrassed to say, we need some help and support right now.
In the 1940s, during the darkest days of World War II, Hollywood went to war — making movies that clearly articulated what was at stake in that global conflict and stirring American citizens to action. Today, the demands are different, as are the dangers. But a similar commitment to the greater good has never been more urgently needed. Please do your part.
Stay safe Hollywood.

The Fuckening, Entry # 1
Despite the novel covid-19 being around for a pretty hot minute now, I have only been self-quarantined about 6 days. There have been several confirmed cases in my county, and today the county had it’s first death.
If it’s not apparent by the title, I’ve decided to officially from here on out refer to this entire debacle as The Fuckening. I will swear. A lot.
I figure it might be somehow lucrative to record my experiences throughout the pandemic, at least as it is pertinent to my country & area. Aside from broader, more public events, it might be interesting to someday look back on my day to day & how we dealt & felt & what we did. I should have been keeping a diary of my life anyway & had intended to despite never making it a priority. Now is as good a time as any.
Anyhow, I anticipate this being a rather disjointed project, variable in moods, topics, formats, etc. & rife with grammatical errors. I haven’t decided how revealing of my identity & location I would like to be, I suppose that’s something I’ll decide as I go. All I’ll reveal for the moment is I live in the U.S. in Pennsylvania.
Recapping what I can right now:
I’m in about day 6 of self-quarantine. All schools have cancelled regular classes and have gone exclusively online, as has happened pretty much everywhere else. My community college also followed suit along with probably every college & university at this point. I’ve had a little over a week off for faculty & staff to prepare for the shift. Class resumes this upcoming wednesday online for the rest of the semester. Curious to how they’re going to structure & grade our biology lab credits.
Bars & restaurants have been state-mandated to shut down except for take-out. Now the liquor stores have shut down as well. Somehow the beer distributor down the street is still open however...
Me & K (boyfriend) haven’t gone nuts with preparations, but we did have 1 significant shopping trip before the state officially began recommending social distancing. We got enough non-perishables for several weeks. We’ve made a couple mini trips for things like milk & fresh veggies.
I also have a few immunocompromised friends who I’ve gone shopping for. I expect to continue doing so as needed. One such friend has a bitch of a rare disease which is frankly on the verge of killing her if she sneezes or coughs too hard. There is so, so much more to it than that, than I dare go into here for privacy reasons but I have spent the last month as one of her actual medical advocates. She is partly the reason I would like to focus my education and eventual clinical research on rare diseases such as hers. Anyhow, despite it being flat out unsafe, she was discharged from the hospital yesterday as my city prepares to get slammed with covid-19 cases.
Both my cats got a stomach bug just 2 days into self-quarantine. It began with Crowley puking, then what looked like bloody emesis & trip to the emergency vet. Sent home with stomach meds & instructions for supportive care before jumping into more than basic testing. He was fine within 36 hours, just in time for Aziraphale to become a little vom-bomb. This lasted for 3 days, with many debates as to when we should finally get her poor little fuzz butt medical attention. She thankfully healed on her own, just as I was about to break down & take her to the vet.
Not to make light of the fact that they were sick, but Zira’s throw-up noise is THE FUNNIEST sound I’ve ever heard in my life. It begins with that usual choppy but also deep guttural *hork hork hork* followed by a very abrupt & very loud  scream “rrRAAHH!” as things made their way up & out. I couldn’t help but kinda lose my shit as I pet her & cleaned up the mess. I’m probably going to hell for this.
Me & K have enjoyed spending more time together during quarantine. We have only had 3 friends over since, all being of our regular weekly crew of Sarah, Greg, & Amanda, & all of who are otherwise self-quarantined. Sarah & Amanda came over last Saturday, Sarah made “Quarantinis,” a goddamn delicious cocktail of vodka, lemon, honey, & crystalized ginger. Us girls & K got quaran-trashed, ate dinner together, played Cards Against Humanity, & watched Waking Ned Devine.
We have been making the FUCK outta some food. This is easily the healthiest we’ve eaten in a long time. Thank God we both can cook.
The weather has been fairly forgiving & the two of us have made efforts to get outside as much as possible while it’s nice. K works from home with some good flexibility & I was fired about a month before corona shit hit the fan. We’re enjoying the local parklette & the humongous cemetery in walking distance from us.
Yesterday was mostly blustery & rainy, save for a 2 hour break in the weather where it was sunny and around 70 degrees. We trekked through said cemetery. As we were on our way out, we rounded the bend of one of the long paths, along the side of a large grassy hill. From that initial perspective of the hill, there was a large pile of indiscernible objects about halfway up the hill. As we came around, we noticed the pile was next to a grave very freshly covered in dirt. Upon closer inspection it became apparent that the “pile” was actually a man wrapped in blankets, with one arm stretched over the dirt of the grave. On the road at the bottom of the hill was what I assumed to be his car. I don’t know who he was, I don’t know who he lost, but they’re burned into my memory forever. It was one of those sights that breaks your entire heart. I cried a little & held K’s hand a little tighter as we made our way toward the gate. K kissed the top of my head & gave me a loving squeeze.
I didn’t get fired over anything serious; my chronic migraines plus a personal failure to obtain intermittent FMLA in a timely manner resulted in termination. My bosses didn’t want to let me go, but you can only fight HR of a corporate health system so much. Oh well. I wasn’t happy there anymore anyway. After 3 years I was bored, having trained up as much as possible without my degree. Some toxic personalities made their way onto our floor staff in the last year which made some shifts absolute hell despite my efforts to avoid them & remain utterly professional. Aside from running out of money, I’ve been incredibly relaxed since being let go. I’ve even lost 4 pounds in the last month. My hair is currently a weird ginger-pink, the result of a failed self bleach job, but it’s not entirely embarrassing so I’m going to let it recover before I try it again & go teal.
I never got around to watching Breaking Bad when it was popular, but last night I finally saw the first episode. K has seen it before, it’s one of his favorite tv shows & he’s ecstatic to watch it together. One episode legit got me hooked already. I know the premise of the show & I can’t wait to see how it pans out.
The political fuckery around this has been.... ugh. I wanted to say “staggeringly defunct” but what else is there to be expected from this current administration? I have designed most of my tumblr to be apolitical but that will change with these specific entries. I’m politically outspoken on Facebook & Twitter & I wanted one or two platforms that could just be fun and neutral. My current politics are very leftist, a head-spinning 180 degree turn from my upbringing & early voting habits. The last four years have sent me purposefully, intentionally & determinedly headlong into the progressive movement, feminism, and hunger for democratic socialism. The only conservative thing left about me is my stubborn remaining infatuation with firearms & gratitude for the 2A. Counterintuitively I’m very pro-sensible gun control, but having the discussion with either side of the issue mostly leaves me wanting to knock heads together.
I digress, the administration’s response to the pandemic has been unsurprisingly subpar, yet somehow not as awful as I expected. Trump went from “not a big deal” & “liberal media hoax” to “oh shit, I actually better get my shit together for this” real quick. I don’t know if it’s because it’s an election year or if there’s actually a shred of competency that’s been hiding under the comb-over but I’ll take what we can get from him, including that $1000 check. Getting unemployment has been a bitch. None of this however, changes the fact that Republicans have known about the crisis since December & instead of preparing the public, decided insider trading was a better idea. This doesn’t change the fact that the DOJ is trying to invoke indefinite detention as a “crisis response” and the only thing standing in the way are House Democrats. And it doesn’t change the fact that our hospital system is overloaded & underfunded, and the Republican controlled government would still rather bail out large corporations as we plunge into an inevitable recession.
I’ve spent too much energy fighting ignorant shit sticks on the internet over all this, including people I know in real life. I gotta keep remembering that all I can do is my best, that you can’t change the world but you can make a dent. On that note, I finally introduced K to Danny DeVito’s cinematic masterpiece Death To Smoochy.
Today I finished reading Darker Than Amber by John D. MacDonald. Quick, fun read, definitely a product of it's time.
That’s all I have in me for today. My neck hurts. Sleep sweet and WASH YOUR FILTHY PAWS.

famous!dean flashfic
Not like there aren’t other things I’m supposed to be working on right now, but this popped into my head and wouldn’t leave till I wrote it. Total flashfic, unedited, and I have no idea if I’m continuing it or not. Although I kinda want to see how Cas is doing with all this....
ETA posted in its entirety on AO3
Dozens of overlapping voices shouted at Dean, each one asking a variation on the same question. Camera flashes left stark afterimages in his vision against the oncoming dusk, but he just kept quiet, smiling affably and waiting until the horde of reporters calmed down enough to let him answer. He may have been caught unaware by Charlie's phone call at 3AM letting him know that someone had leaked pictures of Benny and him and that the internet was already on full alert, he may have spent the day in closed door strategy meetings with the studio and distributors for his coming film that had him gritting his teeth as his private life was discussed in terms of profit margins and marketability, he may have spent two miserable hours being coached on how to present his 'new' self to the media, but he'd be damned if he let the vultures set the pace here.
Finally, they realized he wasn't going to give them anything if they kept at it, and the noise level died to a dull roar. Looking over the choices, he nodded at Becky Rosen. Annoyingly peppy and somewhat bizarrely obsessed with Sam, she still was usually in Dean's corner and could be counted on to lean toward the underdog in any given story.
"Are you gay, Dean?" she asked, pen poised over her notepad.
He chuckled easily (no need to give away that he'd been visualizing this exact moment for most of the day, planning the best way to play it). "Oh, is that why we're all here? I thought I'd won something."
Eyerolls, shrugs, grins, a couple of laughs. Not bad. Behind the crowd of reporters, he could see Sam and Charlie, all supportive smiles and thumbs up. He took a deep breath. That was all he needed. He'd made himself a promise after that first disastrous year in Hollywood -- he'd walk away from it all in a heartbeat if it meant betraying himself or losing Sammy's respect. Somehow, Charlie had wormed her way into that equation as well. He smiled at them.
"I'm not gay." The shouting started again and he held his hands up. As soon as the volume dropped a couple decibels, he continued. "I'm bisexual."
There was a smattering of cheers, some groans; he could swear he saw money being exchanged.
"What was the bet?" he asked. "That I was straight, or that I was gay?"
"Yes!"
"Well, you were all wrong. Next question."
"Are you dating Benny Lafitte?"
His laugh was genuine for that one. "Have any of you actually looked at the picture? I mean, I know I've aged well, but that was from ten years ago." Too many of them looked disgruntled at not being able to write about Benny cheating on Andrea. They probably would anyway; Dean had to literally bite his tongue to not bark at them. "Next?"
"Why were you hiding your sexuality? Are you ashamed?"
"Nope. Just like my privacy. Don't tend to put anyway I date front and center in front of you guys."
"Who's Castiel Novak?"
Dean froze, automatically pulling up his media smile. He could not have possibly heard what he thought he'd just heard. He cleared his throat, trying to loosen the sudden weight in his chest. "I'm not going to answer that right now."
"When will you talk about him, Dean?"
"Wasn't he your first love?"
"Who dumped who?"
The questions came loud and fast. He blinked at the sudden uptick of camera flash. "I'm not ... " This was wrong. The questions were supposed to be about him, or him and Benny, not about ... He couldn't make out the questions anymore, everything coalesced into whirling white noise inside his head. Then Charlie was standing next to him, surreptitiously squeezing his hand as she graced the reporters with a big, open, slightly regretful smile.
"Sorry, folks, but we've got to get Dean moving along. Keep an eye on his Twitter and Facebook over the next few days for more info. In the meantime, I'm sure you all have enough to run with."
Sam's hand closed around Dean's arm, tugging gently. With one last plastic smile, Dean let himself be led back into the hotel lobby, as Charlie struggled to be heard over the crowd. "Just try to be respectful of everyone involved, okay?"
She joined Dean and Sam just as the elevator doors opened and they stepped in, away from the the hotel staff pointedly not watching. Dean leaned against the back wall and let his head fall back with a thunk. Charlie exchanged a look with Sam.
"Well, that could have gone better," she said.
"You think?" Dean growled. "How the fuck did they find out about Cas, Charlie?"
"Dean, it's not her fault."
"This isn't 1984, Dean. I can't just make something not have happened because you say so."
"Yeah, I get that. But the story broke less than 24 hours ago. How did they dig that up? It was ... years ago."
"I don't know, Dean. Someone talked to someone who knew you two, they went back to Lawrence, they found an old yearbook. If someone's looking, the trail's a mile wide. Honestly, I'm actually kinda surprised it hasn't happened before now."
The doors opened and they headed down the hall to Dean's suite. Charlie and Sam winced as Dean headed straight to the minibar. He settled on the couch with three small bottles of liquor and was draining the first one by the time Sam sat down next to him.
"But, speaking of Cas ... "
"We're not."
"Dean," Charlie perched on the arm of the couch. "Maybe you're not, but they are. They know his name, it won't take long to figure out where he lives if they don't already know. They'll be asking him questions, and ...."
"Let him say whatever he wants."
"He could say some pretty damning stuff, Dean."
"Nothin' that's not true," Dean muttered. "I deserve whatever he throws at me." He tossed the empty bottle and started on the next one.
"Okay, but still, maybe you should give him a heads up that he's about to be national news?" Charlie offered quietly.
"Call 'im if you want." Dean pushed up from the couch and headed to his bedroom, detouring to grab as many bottles from the bar as he could carry. "And get this restocked, would you?"
"Nope."
He tried to glare at Sam, but couldn't. The kid was only looking out for him. He'd lived through the fallout of the whole Cas debacle in real time. Dean sighed. "All right, Sammy. But just, just give me tonight okay?"
"You made a mistake, Dean. You were a kid."
"I was 19, Sam. And it was a whole mess of mistakes. And Cas was the one who got hurt." The memory of stunned blue eyes, the brief moment of confusion before realization and hurt set in, where time was suspended just long enough for Dean to wish desperately that he could go back and relive those months away from Cas, be a better man. But he couldn't and he wasn't.
Sam eyed the bottles in Dean's hands. "I think both of you got plenty hurt."
"Yeah, whatever, Dr. Phil." Dean closed the bedroom door firmly behind him. He lined the bottles up on the nightstand, threw himself onto the bed, and proceeded to try to forget.

Millennials don’t want to get drunk. What do they want? Apéritifs.
Gen Z doesn’t want to get drunk. Millennials are tired of the obligatory after-work drinks.
Haus, a new startup selling apéritifs online, has a solution for them. The company’s beverages have a lower alcohol content than standard hard liquors on the market, which means you can drink one, even a few, without getting wasted. Made from distilled grapes, fresh herbs and botanicals, its natural ingredients and A-plus branding are sure to appeal to the younger demographic.
Launching today with pre-seed backing from venture capital funds Combine, Haystack and Partners Resolute, customers can begin ordering Haus’ citrus & flower-flavored debut apéritif (15% ABV), priced at $70 apiece. The goal, co-founder Helena Price Hambrecht explains, is to be the first fully direct-to-consumer player in an industry dominated by digitally-novice incumbent alcohol brands and distributors.
Haus enters the market at an opportune time. VCs — more than ever — are funneling cash to innovative beverage projects. This year, Bev, a canned wine business, raised $7 million in seed funding from Founders Fund. Liquid Death, which sells canned water for the punk rock crowd, attracted nearly $2 million in funding from angel investors like Away co-founder Jen Rubio and Twitter co-founder Biz Stone. And More Labs, the company readying the launch of Liquid Focus, is backed with $8 million in VC funding, among others.
Haus is run by husband-and-wife duo Helena Price Hambrecht and Woody Hambrecht. The former has established herself in Silicon Valley, developing the brands of consumer-facing companies including the likes of Airbnb, Dropbox, Facebook, Fitbit and Instagram. Woody Hambrecht, for his part, has been a bona fide “booze guy” since a young age, making wine and managing 67 acres of wine grapes at the pair’s Sonoma County, Calif. ranch, where Haus is also headquartered.
Haus co-founders, husband-and-wife duo Helena Price Hambrecht (right) and Woody Hambrecht.
“We joke that it must have taken a Silicon Valley type to marry a wine & spirits guy because no one has done this before; it’s crazy,” Price Hambrecht tells TechCrunch. “I can make something that gets a shit load of users and press in my sleep and I married this wine & spirits guy who understands the compliance, fulfillment, legal and finance elements. The amount we can do together is insane.”
By “this,” she means launch a direct-to-consumer apéritif brand. It’s generally illegal to sell spirits online D2C aside from a small subset of liquors with lesser alcohol contents. Knowing this loophole, many restaurants across the U.S. have begun making cocktails using only this subset of liquors (thus avoiding the steep fees required to obtain a liquor license) but Price Hambrecht says no one has thought to create an online store for apéritifs for fear of going up against the old guard of the alcoholic beverage market.
Because Haus handles every part of the process, including a patent-pending production model, the old guard isn’t an issue, nor is scaling. Currently, Haus is making and bottling its beverages in a 3,000 square foot warehouse just North of the couple’s farm, with plans to purchase another 2,800 square foot warehouse as orders increase. Unlike wine or whiskey, which must age years before going to market, it only takes hours to make apéritifs, simplifying one of the more complex features of the wine & spirits business.
Later this year, Haus plans to raise additional seed capital to launch a subscription product in 2020, begin constructing brick-and-mortar apéritif shops for the millennial and Gen Z cohort and release a second and thid product line. Ultimately, Haus wants not only to disrupt the liquor business but provide alternative beverages to young people looking for better options.
“I was going through my own dilemma of drinking,” Price Hambrecht said. “If you’re a person that is career-focused, you’re possibly drinking 4-plus nights per week. I love how it brings people together; it’s a foundation of society, but you’ve got all these downsides. I never want to be drunk, I never want to be hungover.”
“It’s a cultural problem that we are solving.”

Tumblr media
I recently took all but a select handful of celebrities out of all my social media feeds. It was a careful culling, accomplished over several days, during which I weighed the costs and the benefits of having them in my stream.
The benefits of some were very clear. Lena Dunham, Kristen Bell, Rashida Jones, all brilliant women who utilize their social media to amplify important issues. Keep on the list. I’m so glad I kept Kerry Washington or I wouldn’t have seen her wonderful retort against AdWeek’s photoshopping of her magazine cover on Instagram this week. These are the kinds of voices I want to wake up and listen to each morning.
The ones who were scrapped were the reality television stars (which includes every iteration of Kardashian and second-degree relations), most pop singers and anyone who owns their own liquor company.
Five years ago, I wrote a book called Celebrity Inc., a hard-hitting look at the celebrity-industrial complex and the multitude of ways celebrities manipulate their fan base to make money—lots and lots and lots of money.
Social media has now become one of the biggest money makers for Hollywood’s 1 percent. If I wrote that book today, it would be called Celebrity.com, since social media has now become one of the biggest moneymakers for Hollywood’s 1 percent.
I know what you’re wondering. Why did I have all of these famous people in my feed anyway? Did I try out for the Bachelorette or binge-watch Real Housewives one evening? I wish the answer were yes, but it’s actually much more nefarious than that.
Social platforms like Twitter and Instagram push celebrities hard on new users. These are the accounts that are often among the recommended people to follow when you first sign up for a new platform. Almost everyone has Justin Bieber in their Twitter feed whether they like it or not. It makes sense then that celebs grow their followers much faster than the average person.
Your next question is probably, why purge at all? Was it really so bothersome?
Yes, it was. I don’t want to feel like I’m being sold to all of the time.
The goodwill and intimacy a friendly social feed cultivates with fans isn’t just a positive externality, it’s a gold mine. Economists often talk about customer lifetime value (CLV), which is the net present value of the cash flows attributed to a single customer in their lifetime. In the celebrity industry a CLV used to be attributed to the things a customer would buy that a celebrity produced.
Now, more than ever before, a celebrity can maximize that CLV by figuring out all of the other things a loyal fan will buy that are tangentially associated with them, often in their social media feeds. This has been bubbling up for a long time, the celebrity product placement. In the dark, dark days before Twitter and Instagram, a celebrity would be paid by a brand to wear something or eat something and then be photographed in a magazine with it. It was good money, but pocket change.
Things are different now. Many of those celebrity magazines only sell a few hundred thousand copies at the newsstand every week, but a celebrity likely has at least triple that on Twitter and/or Instagram. Now that they’re the distributor of the content, they get the big paychecks for product placement.
There are three key ways celebrities are making money off of their social feeds and all of them are reasons the average consumer should be wary.
1. Celebrities are paid directly by brands to promote products on their social media accounts. These deals can be in the millions. They make sense for brands. It’s excellent advertising.
2. Celebrities are paid higher salaries for movie television record and book projects based on the numbers of followers they have and have contracts telling them how often they need to use those platforms to sell these things.
3. Celebrities get almost everything for free. But, nothing is ever free in the real world. When I see comments like, “I’m so loving on these new scarves from [insert brand]” or “I can’t get enough of this “new healthy, artisanal, organic food delivery service,” I know these celebrities are being paid with everything from clothes and cars to facials and wildly expensive vacations.
It all just makes me feel used. Of course I understand that dwindling television viewership and the decline of print media means that brands need to find ways to make consumers aware of their products. It’s a new business model and it isn’t a terrible one. But it still feels sneaky. At least television and magazine ads are very clear about their purpose and their conception—a brand paid a person to hold a product in a picture or a video.
When a fan follows a celebrity on social media, they feel more connected to that celebrity. They feel like they’re following a friend, which makes sense because all of a sudden you’re given a very intimate look in someone’s personal life.
But on social media, nothing is clear-cut anymore. There are rarely identifiers marking any kind of paid celebrity endorsement in any kind of social media and that’s what’s manipulative about it. And yet that “friend” is constantly trying to manipulate you into consumption.

Camden County Native Herb Kelleher, Co-Founder Of Southwest Airlines, Dies At 87
Follow CBSPHILLY Facebook  | Twitter
DALLAS (AP) — Not many CEOs dress up as Elvis Presley, settle a business dispute with an arm-wrestling contest, or go on TV wearing a paper bag over their head.
Herb Kelleher did all those things. Along the way, the co-founder and longtime leader of Southwest Airlines also revolutionized air travel by practically inventing the low-cost, low-fare airline.
Kelleher died on Thursday. He was 87. Southwest confirmed his death but did not indicate the cause.
In the late 1960s, the nation’s airlines were a clique of venerable companies that offered onboard dining, movies and other amenities to make flying pleasant but pricey. Fares approved by federal regulators made air travel a luxury that few could afford.
Kelleher was a lawyer in San Antonio in 1967 when a client, Rollin King, came to him with the idea for a low-fare airline that would fly between San Antonio, Dallas and Houston. Kelleher guided Southwest through a thicket of legal obstacles thrown up by other airlines, and the new carrier began flying in 1971.
Southwest kept costs low. It flew just one kind of plane, the Boeing 737, to make maintenance simpler and cheaper. It gave out peanuts instead of meals. There were no assigned seats. It operated from less-congested secondary airports to avoid money-burning delays.
Southwest turned a profit in 1973 and hasn’t suffered a money-losing year since — a streak unmatched in the U.S. airline business.
Kelleher became Southwest’s chairman in 1978 and CEO in 1982, as federal regulation of airline prices was disappearing. He led the company through its period of greatest growth. As Southwest entered new cities, it forced other airlines to match its lower prices. Federal officials dubbed this “the Southwest Effect.”
Today, Southwest carries more passengers within the United States than any airline. While critics say Southwest has come to resemble the bigger carriers that it once fought against, it created a model of streamlined operations, low costs and lower fares that spawned similar airlines around the world.
If Southwest was different, so was its garrulous CEO — a wisecracking chain smoker who bragged about his fondness for Wild Turkey bourbon whiskey.
Kelleher was so outgoing that it would take him ages to walk through an airport — he seemed to stop every few feet to chat with employees and passengers. He had a booming laugh, a bottomless trove of anecdotes, and a lawyer’s precise way with words.
Kelleher showed a flair for wacky marketing antics. When Braniff tried to drive Southwest out of business by undercutting its fares — prices that ensured both airlines would lose money — Kelleher offered a bottle of liquor to anyone who bought a full-fare Southwest ticket. Kelleher said that business travelers with expense accounts and a thirst for booze made Southwest the biggest liquor distributor in Texas for a time.
When Southwest and a smaller aviation company both claimed the same advertising slogan, Kelleher proposed to settle the dispute by holding an arm-wrestling contest with the other CEO. Kelleher, clenching a lit cigarette between his teeth, lost the match, but the victor — impressed by the publicity the stunt generated — let Southwest keep using the tagline.
As Southwest added service to more cities, executives of other airlines — and some of their passengers — dismissed Southwest as a cattle-car operation for cheap travelers. Kelleher answered with a TV commercial in which he wore a paper bag over his head and promised to give the bag to any customer who was too embarrassed to be seen flying on his discount airline.
The TV ads and the Elvis costumes helped make Kelleher the public face of Southwest and probably the most recognized person in the airline industry.
In 1999, at age 68, Kelleher was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He kept working, commuting between Southwest’s Dallas headquarters and a hospital in Houston, but the incident added urgency for a succession plan.
In 2001, Kelleher stepped down as CEO and president, and he retired as chairman in 2008. Even after leaving, he remained on the payroll and went to the office regularly.
In a 2011 interview with The Associated Press, Kelleher said his proudest achievement was that Southwest — in an industry that cut tens of thousands of jobs in the decade after 2001 — never laid off workers.
In a statement Thursday, Southwest said, “Herb was a pioneer, a maverick, and an innovator. His vision revolutionized commercial aviation and democratized the skies.”
Boone Pickens, the oilman and fellow legendary Texas business figure, tweeted, “Herb Kelleher is arguably the most transformative figure and character in the history of modern aviation. He is the epitome of the can-do entrepreneurial spirit.”
Herbert D. Kelleher was born in Haddon Heights, New Jersey, and got his first job — for $2.50 a week — making sure that copies of the Philadelphia Bulletin newspaper were delivered. He graduated from Wesleyan University and earned a law degree from New York University in 1956.
Kelleher is survived by his wife, Joan, and three of their four children.

Ivanka Trump Also Promised to Resign From Family Business, And Hasn’t Filed Paperwork
President Trump’s eldest daughter said she’d give up management of her businesses. We checked.
Tumblr media
Derek Kravitz and Al Shaw | Feb. 2, 2017
When Donald Trump promised in early January to hand over control of his businesses before becoming president, Trump’s daughter, Ivanka, pledged to do the same thing.
“I will no longer be involved with the management or operations of the Trump Organization,” Ivanka Trump wrote on Facebook. Ivanka said that she would take a “formal leave of absence” when her father was sworn in.
Yet Ivanka is still listed as running Trump businesses on active state liquor licenses in Florida and New York, as of Thursday afternoon. The licenses cover two golf clubs, a resort and a hotel. ProPublica obtained the documents and records through open-records requests.
Being listed on a license means that person is considered the responsible manager of a business. For example, that is who is responsible for business contracts.
Get your Latest News From The Leftist Front on LeftPress.tk → Help Us Gather News (Click for Details) ←
Ivanka Trump is also still listed in New York state business filings as the chief executive officer of her eponymous jewelry companies in Florida and New York. Her personal Twitter and Facebook accounts also still link directly to her corporate website.
In response to questions, the Trump Organization said Ivanka resigned from all “positions of management and authority” on Jan. 18 and that the company simply hasn’t filed the changes yet. “We are taking steps to update records in the various states and other jurisdictions consistent with governing law,” the company said in its statement.
The Trump Organization did not give us any company documents showing Ivanka Trump’s resignation.
Both Florida and New York require that any changes in leadership be recorded on liquor licenses within 10 business days of the move. If Ivanka Trump had resigned Jan. 18, the states’ deadline for changes would have been Feb. 1.
Ivanka’s name was taken off a Washington, D.C., liquor license at the new Trump International Hotel last week.
The missing filings mirror Donald Trump’s then-absent paperwork that we detailed on Inauguration Day. The Trump Organization later released a company letter declaring his resignation from more than 400 companies. It has since filed paperwork in Florida showing Trump resigning from at least 22 companies. His name was also taken off a North Carolina liquor license in early January and the District of Columbia license last week.
Many ethics and tax experts across the political spectrum have said that Trump’s promises are far from enough. They say that the president needs to either sell his companies or put them in a blind trust run by an outsider.
Trump’s resignation letter “doesn’t say anything about the underlying economic interests in the companies he continues to have,” said Lawrence Hamermesh, director of the Widener Institute of Delaware Corporate and Business Law.
► Trump Promised to Resign From His Companies — But There’s No Record He’s Done So
To transfer control of his companies, the president has to submit filings in Florida, Delaware and New York. We spoke to officials in each of those states. Read the story on ProPublica

Incoming President Donald Trump’s business deals span the globe. We asked the Trump Organization about each of these deals. Read the story on ProPublica
Trump has said his businesses have been placed in a trust to be run by his two adult sons, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, and a longtime Trump employee. A chief compliance officer and outside ethics adviser for the Trump Organization were named last week, along with a new White House counsel overseeing ethics policies.
Recently filings in Washington list President Trump as the “exclusive” beneficiary of the trust.
Trump’s businesses have already faced questions about whether they are profiting off of the commander-in-chief’s increased exposure. Mar-A-Lago, the members-only golf club in Florida, doubled its initiation fees for new members to $200,000 on Jan. 1, citing increased demand. Trump Hotels’ CEO also recently floated the idea of expanding in the U.S.
In recent years, Ivanka Trump’s star has risen, and her clothing and jewelry lines have flourished. Her clothing line saw a nearly $30 million increase in sales through just one of her distributors last year.
She was criticized when her jewelry company sent out an email promoting a bracelet she wore during a November appearance on the TV news program “60 Minutes.” Her husband, Jared Kushner, has his own business empire: Kushner Companies, a real-estate development company started by his father. Kushner has also stepped down from his company, and sold some of his real-estate holdings and other assets, to take a role in advising the White House.
Because the Trump Organization is made up of privately held companies and living trusts, much of its official business can be done out of public view, corporate attorneys say. A private company’s ownership structure — specifically who has equity in the company — is not a matter of public record.
While changes to management have to be filed in liquor licenses, other internal operating agreements of private companies can be changed without public filings. Trump businesses are required to give banks copies of non-public governing documents detailing their officers and bylaws. Title companies would also require similar information if they were working on current deals. These filings are also not public.
ProPublica received copies of some Trump company internal operating agreements, as part of our Washington, D.C., open-records request, but these records do not include information about specific ownership stakes.
Elisabeth Gawthrop and Alison Gregor contributed to this report.
Update, Feb. 2, 2017 at 5:20 p.m.: Ivanka Trump’s Twitter and Facebook pages no longer have links to her corporate website.
Update, Feb. 2, 2017 at 7:40 p.m.: Alan Garten, the Trump Organization’s chief legal officer, told ProPublica that Ivanka Trump has signed all necessary paperwork to resign from her companies and that the filings are in the process of being updated with various states or are being sent. “Effective tomorrow, everything will be done,” he said.
ProPublica will continue to seek records documenting the Trump Organization and its corporate changes. Want to send us something? Email me at [email protected].

குடிக்கு அடிமையான தமிழினம் - TASMAC Addicted Tamils | Tamil | Bala Somu
Tamils are one of the highest consumers of liquor among Indians. The State Government of Tamilnadu is the sole distributor of liquor in the state and raked in over 30,000 crores in 2018. Men, women and children alike have now become addicted to liquor in the state. Not just adults, even school children have been reported to have taken to drinking in a big way. This begs the question of whether the state government is bothered about the welfare of its citizens at all!
