Lowell, Linda ... and Kip.

Doodled this sorta-snapshot yesterday, because I've been meaning to tell the entire story of how a young and troubled individual ended up being the happy father of a teenage son. Also, I wanted to draw Linda properly, at least once, and I really love the outcome. She was an Irish beauty from a broken home, tall and skinny, fashionable, wild, adventurous... and deeply troubled as well.

Kip is the product of two very unstable young (former) addicts, and despite things working out, he really wasn't born in ideal circumstances, that's just a fact. Things could have taken a much more dramatic turn, too, everyone is aware of that fact as well.

Linda most likely won't make a comeback in the story. I like to think that she's doing well these days, though. She overcame her addiction, too, and found her path. Maybe she somehow got into fashion design or something, I'm not sure, but I want her to be well.

Kip actually tried contacting her once, when he was fourteen, but he got his little package of letters back - refused by recipient. That shattered the boy for a moment, but it's also another story to get into. Linda isn't a bad person, she just isn't a mother. In her own way, she thinks she's doing him a favour by not embracing him as a part of her life. She has made her choice and for now it looks like it's going to be her final choice.

Let's get to the beginning, though. A ton of lore is under the cut!

Lowell "Fozzy" Foster finished school in Summer 2006 and I'd love to be able to say that this was when the madness started, but the sad truth is that he had been smack dab in the middle of the madness for quite a while at the time. Fozzy had started hanging out with the wrong crowd (outside school) way back in his early teenage years; and after some things went terribly wrong in his little circle of school friends, that crowd was the only safe haven he had left.

Of course these people weren't a safe haven, but they were his pals and Fozzy really liked his life at the time. Sex, drugs and rock'n'roll was just as much fun as it sounded and he had no real clue what he had gotten himself into anyway. You know how it is, right? It's others who have problems. And he wasn't aimless, after all. Fozzy was enrolled at university, studying music. That had always been his path, he was good at that and he had passed those admission exams with flying colours. He was a natural, a prodigy. Not an addict in need of help, no. Not him. Don't be ridiculous.

Sure, the "showing up at university" was a bit tricky sometimes, being hungover and weary almost any day, but he had more talent in his little finger than others had in their entire body. He would manage. Somehow.

In late Summer 2006, Fozzy and his peers became regulars at a little rock club in town ("The Snake Pit"). Said club was also frequently visited by a group of girls (Belle Pratt, Leslie Carver and Linda Abernathy) referred to by others as "The Coven". They usually showed up together and they were an illustrious little gang, too; drop dead gorgeous, dangerous, fun-loving, wild. Not to be messed with. There really isn't much to Linda and Fozzy's 'love' story - they laid eyes on each other one fine evening, both were like "I dunno who you are but I've seen you around and you're mine now.", and it was pretty much a sealed deal right away. Both were absolute messes, together they formed an incredibly hot super mess and it was fun while it lasted. The two were completely crazy about each other at first and, a little later, they were quite dramatic, too. There wasn't a single day when the two didn't have some sort of an argument. Not always huge arguments, no, but still. Relationships come with passion, but also pain and misery, right? Isn't that the way it's supposed to be? Hell yeah, it is. Sid and Nancy knew it, everyone knows it.

Some months into their fling, in early 2007, Linda discovered that she was pregnant. And when she told Fozzy about it, he got reminded of that other time this had happened, only about a year ago, while he was still in school. And he did the exact same thing he had done back then (and that he was truly good at, too): he called the lady out ("Pfsh, might not even be mine, who knows who you've been hookin' up with lately."), and then he ran, as fast and far as he could. Linda was furious. Devastated. She had always liked Fozzy a little more than he had liked her. She had always known, and she never cared, because it was her who had him, despite that. And now he was gone. It was too late to terminate the pregnancy at the time, and nothing made sense anymore. She didn't want that child either, but she'd be the one stuck with it. Fuckin' hell.

Her (mysoginist) doctor and some peers somehow talked her into keeping the baby around. "This could be a good thing, we can help out?! Imagine, a wee rock'n'roll baby!"… and nothing about that particular decision was rational or made a whole lot of sense. Linda was very unstable, she kept thinking things from "Perhaps that motherfucker comes back once that child is born?!" to "How hard can raisin' a wee bastard even be?!" … it was a huge mess in her head, but Linda eventually decided to not put her baby up for adoption.

At the same time, Fozzy kept doing his thing, but the thought of Linda carrying his child kept coming up, and it was quite haunting. He didn't love her, oh no. Liked her enough but didn't love her. He had loved once in his life, and that had blown up a year prior. Same situation, different gal. (The story is here - another ton of lore within a ton of lore.) How could that still be haunting him? It was in the past, he had done everything to keep it in the past. This was a nightmare. It felt wrong, everything felt wrong now. He'd have to keep this far away from him, too, somehow.

Christian Lowell Abernathy was born on August 19th 2007. Only a week or so later, his biological father accidentally overdosed. Better said, he and his pal had gotten their hands on a contaminated batch of cocaine; said pal didn't survive. Fozzy did. Barely. He had his "I'm stepping into the light!" moment, and later, when he learned about the fate of his friend, he had his "That could have been me." moment, too. And all of a sudden, things weren't the same anymore. Just days before his 20th birthday, Lowell Foster was released from hospital and went right into rehab.

Fozzy's memories of rehab are… blurry. So are the memories of the time before; to this day he has actual holes in his memory. Some things seem to be lost forever, and he'd never admit it to anyone but it deeply scares him.

He sorta hated rehab. He went with it, sure, but it was difficult. Facing his own troubles and fears and figuring out what went wrong was difficult. There was a reason he always tried to run from everything; working on himself was something he had always outright refused to do, and now he was forced to. There never was that one thing where Fozzy would say "That's it, this is the reason I went completely bonkers!", either. It's a bunch of things, probably. Having successful parents and being afraid of living in their shadows, boredom, overconfidence, a lack of better judgement… who even knows.

His parents were outright relieved, they had already prepared for the worst. It was also them who kinda "forced" him into it. Not really, because he was twenty years old and would make his own (bad) decisions, but he let it happen. He just let them take charge, he didn't have anything else left at the time. Treatment went long enough to cause actual change. Fozzy never relapsed, he never wanted to end up like his friend. Not for one second. He was never suicidal, quite the opposite. He loved life and always wanted the most out of it.

For the first time in his young life, Lowell Foster was lost. And angry. But mostly lost. How would he go on after all this? How would he leave a life like that behind, when it was pretty much all he knew at the time?

Once he was somewhat back up on his feet, Fozzy picked up his studies again. Apparently he'd just do that for now. The lack of joy was there to stay, though. It was a weird, weird time.

Miles away from him, Linda struggled with taking care of her tiny son. She struggled so, so much. Didn't have any actual help from anyone (turned out that the promises from her so-called friends were empty, who would have thought) and she wasn't a mother. Never wanted to be one in first place, she just didn't have it in her. Linda didn't hate her son and she never actively harmed him, but she never managed to feel the kind of love he would have needed. It was too much of a task for her, she needed so much help with herself, she was in no way fit to care for another person and at some point, she realised just that.

And when her son had just turned two years old, she did the best and most responsible thing she had ever done in her young life: she gave her son up and committed herself to psychiatric care.

Child Protection Services took the little boy in and Linda had given them the name of his biological father, too. They found the Foster family pretty quickly and appeared on their figurative doorstep one fine day. (It was a little more nuanced than that, and I'm taking a few liberties with Child Protection Services in my universe, too, but the doorstep thing really sums it up well and is all we need to know: all of a sudden, there was a child in the mix.)

It was the first time Andrew and Fionnuala Foster heard that they had a grandchild. Their son had never mentioned anything in that direction, and they couldn't quite believe it. Then again, anything going on around Lowell no longer really surprised them, they had lost him for a while after all.

When they saw the little boy, they were stunned - he was a carbon copy of his father.

Fozzy himself was stunned, too. So… there really was a child. Huh. … shit. Truth is that he never really thought about that particular incident anymore and he never knew whether Linda had the baby or not. But there was a child now. A child that looked suspiciously like him. First thing Fozzy did was demand a paternity test. Because… oh my god, what the fuck.

The test came back positive, that little boy was his flesh and blood. Oooooh fuck. Oh god. Oh no.

Fozzy may have made some personal progress at the time, but he was so far from being a dad. He was still figuring his life out, he had never wanted any children in his life and even his parents had to admit that he was in no way fit to raise a child. They didn't want to let the little boy go, though. He was family. He was so, so cute, he looked so much like his dad. He needed love and care. The thought of him ending up in foster care (haha) was one Andrew and Fionnuala hated. They were still quite young. They had all the means in the world to care for another child. They had all the love and ability to care, too. It wasn't what they had planned for their later life, no. It was the right thing to do, though.

And maybe, just maybe… their son would come around one day. Even if he didn't, though… the boy would stay with them. He deserved a nice life, he deserved his family.

It took Fozzy a while to warm up to his own child. It happened. Slowly. Reluctantly. But it happened. His parents were smart enough to not force the two to interact, but… they made it happen. Every now and then. They were sneaky.

"Your mother is at rehearsal, Lowell, and I gotta pick up a few things in town. It'll just be an hour, you won't kill the child within an hour and you will live, too."

"I have a hairdresser appointment, Lowell. Your father is giving a few extra lessons today, it'll just be for two or so hours. He has eaten, he's fine, he'll probably sleep all the way through. You just have to watch him, you can do that, I know it."

It really was a process. But it happened. And once it turned out that the wee child wasn't evil or poisonous, Fozzy managed to relax around him.

At some point, curiosity kicked in, too. Any time the tiny boy kept himself busy in his presence, Fozzy watched closely. He couldn't help it, he just had to. The way the wee one discovered his own motor skills, the way he tried to figure out life and his surroundings… it was fascinating?! The way he sometimes looked at him from big blue eyes and made funny noises and faces… it amused him.

That kid amused him.

At some point, Andrew and Fionnuala didn't have to beg anymore.

"You guys do your thing, I'll manage to keep that wee bugger busy, it's fine. Don't worry."

At some point, Fozzy started calling his son "Kip". He had picked that up somewhere recently, and it just came out one day. "Kip. How's that, huh? Are you a Kip? I think it sounds good, I think you are." He never liked the name "Christian" anyway. That kid wasn't a "Christian". Or a "Chris", or anything. He was Kip now.

"Dear god, Lowell, we were gone for only half a day and you renamed the child?!"

"I didn't rename him, I just found him a nickname, for fuck's sake. That other name was shite anyway."

Christian was Kip now, and his biological father had become his pal.

It would go on like this for a while.

Fozzy took care of the wee one any time he could, while he was also doing well at university. He also got into creating YouTube content as a part of that, and his channel ("Fozzpot" - his old friend Cal Fitzgibbons had called him that once and it was stuck in his brain ever since) blew up; it turned out there was an audience for what he did.

Apparently, that was his life now: studying, making music, making videos, hanging out with a kid. With his kid, to be precise. And it wasn't as awful as he had feared it to be. Quite the opposite, that wee bugger made him look at things from an entirely different perspective. He was the only kid he liked. 😂

One night Kip suffered an asthma attack, just a bit after he had turned five. It was a bad one. He had recovered so well since they had taken him in, but a chronic disease doesn't go away after all, and all of a sudden Fozzy found himself in a hospital corridor, pacing and waiting, bargaining with the universe to let the boy live and take his life instead. Or something like that. Didn't matter. He'd give anything; he'd wipe out the earth's entire population if that was what it would take.

It turned out that he wouldn't have to do that; Kip made it and he would recover just fine, too. That was when Fozzy realised that the boy wasn't just a tiny pal, someone he just looked after. That wee shite had apparently stolen his entire heart at some point in the past three years.

Huh. He hadn't even noticed.

Once Kip was well again, Fozzy made up his mind and eventually told his parents that he wanted him to move in with him, once he'd graduated. He still had no idea what he was doing, not at all, but he figured that his parents had done more than enough. They'd still be around, of course. It wasn't that he wanted to take Kip away from them, not at all! Quite the opposite. Things were good after all, not much would have to change in the end.

Didn't a child belong with its parents, though? For some weird reason it just felt right to him.

It was a big surprise for Andrew and Fionnuala. They had hoped for this to happen, sure, somewere deep down inside, but they would have been entirely happy with things remaining how they were at the time, because it was already so much more than what they had started with.

Once Fozzy had graduated from University, the move happened. Kip was happy to live with his dad, and things really were quite well. Who would have thought, considering where they all had been at some point?

Fozzy was never a picture book dad, though. Definitely not. Other parents, teachers, educators of all kinds… they would have thrown their hands up in horror sometimes, if they had watched these two. 🤣 (Which is also kinda the point of this entire arc. They really kinda are my own version of the Gilmore Girls, except that it's boys and rated R. 🤣)

Fozzy found his own ways and means, though, he made it work, and (at least in the big picture) he did well. A thing Fozzy had always somewhat intuitively done right was always putting Kip first. Being well aware that his own heart was now living outside of his body (in the small hands of that wee shite, to be precise) it was no longer about protecting the boy only, it was about protecting his own heart as well. 😤 When Kip was sad, he was sad, too. When Kip suffered, he suffered.

In turn; if Kip was well, he would be well, too. For Fozzy, it was as simple as that.

Older Kip could say many things about his dad, and not all of those things would be pretty or nice, but one thing he would also firmly stand by is that he always felt taken seriously. He never felt unimportant in the presence of his dad. If he had troubles at school, for example, Fozzy never questioned the things he said. He listened, he got up, he blamed and yelled at others first. 🤣 And if Kip turned out to be the problem, Fozzy never yelled either. He knew a thing or two about being a problem for others, and he only hoped that Kip wouldn't repeat his own mistakes.

Damn, that line is SO lame… he really was a parent now. And the worst of it all... he was loving it. Fuck.

I consider this my Foster masterpost lol. Have some random facts, too. 😂

As I said, the nickname "Kip" is something that randomly came to be. However, Kip sometimes likes to tell people that it's the abbreviation of "kid in peril". At some point in his life that wasn't far from the truth after all.

Being a neglected kid with a medical condition, tiny Kip needed a little while to recover, adjust and catch up. The Fosters decided to grant him a bit more time so he entered school a year later than he could have, which makes him one of the "oldest" of his year.

I am still in the middle of figuring out the ways in which Kip's upbringing affected him but it's definitely not just funny chaos in the Foster household. I feel Kio is familiar with mild depression and anxiety. Maybe has some trust issues, too. It kinda breaks my heart a little but I just don't see that he lived through all his life events and came out of it entirely unharmed. COVID affected him, too. The lockdowns, the not-knowing about how an infection would affect him as an asthmatic… I don't know, but I think he's a bit of a mess in his own way. A generally happy mess, but not unaffected by life's events.

He's smart and also a good student! Not the straight-A kind, but he puts in effort. Is kinda shit at maths and natural sciences, though.

Kip recently took a job at a restaurant in town centre, to earn a little extra money. Not because he has to, but because he wants to. Get out of the house, show his dad he's a capable and respectable person… you know, it's all about autonomy.

He is, in a way, his father's son. Let's just say that the first thing Fozzy got called into the high school's headmaster's office for involved a fifteen-year-old Kip, a girl from his class, a skipped math lesson, the janitorial room (plus the stolen keys to that one) and some very disheveled school uniforms. Fozzy wasn't even mad, I think somewhere on the inside he was really just like "Yup, you are my son."

Kip is just as much of a pest as his father. Honestly, don't let the sweet and charming smile fool you. Sure, he's cute and a very kind person, he's much more self-aware than Fozzy ever was at his age so he's not exactly like him, of course, but he has the same drive and temper and he isn't afraid to pick fights either.

He isn't exactly one to get into trouble, but he has some sort of a reputation anyway. Kip is not shy at all, even a bit insolent at times (more or less a byproduct of growing up with that kind of father), and I think he polarises quite a bit, among students and teachers.

Also, to shed some light on the Fozzy/Lowell confusion… 😂 It's 95% "Lowell" these days. I usually keep referring to him as "Fozzy" because I have introduced him that way. He pretty much stopped introducing himself as "Fozzy" after rehab, but especially after he moved back to Inverness with Kip, in Summer 2019. It was a fresh start, it was a good time to do a full switch!

The nickname is still somewhat a thing, but mostly a thing of the past. It's super appropriate when his old friends call him that, but "newer" people in his life call him Lowell. Max calls him Lowell, Leo (who is still to be introduced) calls him Lowell, Abby will, once they get past the (mostly) formal teacher-parent communication… his parents always called him that.

He wouldn't mind if people called him that nowadays but he also really outgrew "Fozzy". "Fozzy" was the one to do all that awful crap he did, the young superidiot. "Lowell" is the grown up guy who has his life mostly in order.

COOPER HOWARD - NINE

1 & 2 - Linda and Robert Howard 

Most people’s first threads are their parents. Cooper is no exception. He’s born with two tiny circles of red around his thumbs and an instinctual knowledge: they are there until death; they will remain even if he cuts them. He has eight more. It is far better to have these two than not. 

Like most children, he makes threats in the midst of his tantrums. “I’ll cut it off!” he screams at his mother when she won’t let him have his way. “I’ll cut your thread!”

Of course, he never does. 

Three decades later, in his father’s hospital room, he watches the brilliant crimson fade to a colorless gray. The last bit of red fades away right as the flatline sounds. 

Cooper is sick for a week straight afterwards, can’t so much as get out of bed. When he finally does haul himself back into the real world, the ache in his heart stays. He resents it — there was no love lost between him and his father, but every time he catches a glimpse of that gray thread, it makes him hurt all over again. In the end, it takes more than a year before his heart feels well and truly whole.

It’s the first thread he loses. It won’t be his last.  

3 - Mrs. Abernathy 

He’s only seven when he gives the third one away. He’d developed a lisp, and his parents had immediately put him into speech therapy. He’s grateful for it. The other children have been picking on him incessantly. 

Mrs. Abernathy never does. She works with him, tells him where to put his tongue to get his consonants just right. She’s exceedingly kind and excessively patient, and he wants to show her how much he appreciates what she’s done for him in the best way he can think of. 

On the last day of therapy, when his lisp is well and thoroughly gone – his peers in third grade will never even know he had it – he edges his way shyly to her desk. 

“Mrs. Abernathy,” he says, proud that he can say her title without it sounding like he’s speaking through a spoonful of peanut butter. 

She graces him with a smile. “Yes, Mr. Howard?” She always addresses him like that, like he’s her equal. It makes him feel distinctly grown-up. 

Puffing out his chest, he holds up his hand. “I want you to know that I gave you a thread.” He knows she can’t see it, and he knows she almost certainly won’t give him one back, but it’s the highest honor he’s capable of bestowing. 

“Oh, Cooper.” Mrs. Abernathy places a hand to her heart. “That’s very kind of you, sweetie, but I want you to be careful with who you give those to, okay? Here.” She holds up her own hands and counts out her fingers, then gives them a wiggle. “Ten. It seems like a big number, doesn’t it?” 

He nods solemnly. Double-digits. He’ll be a big kid when he hits double-digits, that’s what everyone keeps telling him. Ten seems a very long way away. 

Mrs. Abernathy places her hands on her knees and leans forward. “I’m going to tell you a secret. It isn’t very big at all. In fact, in a few years, you’ll probably wish you had a lot more than ten fingers for those threads. So you keep them for people who can give them back to you.” 

He gets a similar lecture from his parents when they find out what he’s done. Mrs. Abernathy must have called them because he comes home to find his father in a fine state. 

“Soft-hearted nonsense!” he blusters when Cooper confirms he has, indeed, bestowed Mrs. Abernathy with one of his threads. “This is what comes of going too easy on him. He gets these sort of fool-headed ideas.” This to his mother, who sits with an almost contemplative look on the sofa. 

“I don’t know,” she hums. “I think it’s sweet of him.” 

Robert’s face goes as red as a tomato. “Sweet! It’s permanent, Linda. The boy’s gone and permanently tied himself to a woman four times his age. What’s he going to get out of that?” He yanks loose the knot in his tie and rakes a hand through thinning hair. 

Cooper quails backward as he rounds on him. 

“You listen here, Coop. You do something this stupid again, I’ll cut the damn thread myself. You hear me?” Robert advances a step, goes so far as to make his fingers into scissors and snip the air. 

Tears well in Cooper’s eyes, and he clutches his hand to his chest. He doesn’t want to lose any of his threads. 

Linda jumps up and slaps Robert’s hand down. “Stop it, Bob! He’s going to think you’re serious.” Spinning, she crouches down in front of Cooper and pulls him into a hug. Runs a soothing hand over his hair and murmurs, “Don’t worry, dear, no one can cut it but you. You know that, don’t you?” 

Cooper nods, but his father’s threat stays with him for a long time. 

4 - Grant 

Cooper doesn’t even think about giving away another thread until he’s fourteen. Grant is his best friend, has been for the past six years – practically a lifetime. Grant probably knows him better than he knows himself. 

It feels monumental when they ditch their bikes at the edge of what they think is the woods – in reality, a two-acre patch slated for development that happens to have some dense shrubbery and trees – and hike to a group of rocks. The rocks are famous with the neighborhood kids for being infested with snakes, but they climb fearlessly to the top. 

Grant takes out his pocket-knife and scrapes it against the unyielding stone. It leaves marks behind, white on gray, and he carves out a clumsy “G.” 

“Here.” He hands the knife to Cooper. 

Dutifully, Cooper adds a “C” right next to it. “Now what?” 

“We gotta bleed.” Grant holds the knife over the pad of his index finger and digs the point of it in until a drop of blood wells beneath it. Once again, he hands Cooper the knife. 

His breath hisses through his teeth as the blade punctures his skin, but he lifts his finger to show Grant he’s done it. 

Grant presses their fingers together, their blood mixing and falling combined onto the initials they’d carved. “There,” he says, wiping his hand on his pants and leaving a rusty streak behind. “Now we’re blood brothers.” 

“Blood brothers,” Cooper repeats, wrapping his hand around his finger to stem the bleeding. When he opens his fist, he realizes a thread has wrapped itself around the base of his bloodied finger. His eyes follow it to where it terminates somewhere within Grant’s rib cage. He hadn’t even realized he’d given one away. 

5 - Janet 

Cooper is seventeen and a bit of a romantic. He’s been dating Janet since Grant moved away two years back, and he’s pretty sure it’s going to be forever. 

By the time he’s eighteen, he’s sure enough to run a thread between them. Never before has he wished so fervently that she could just see it herself because it is, frankly, a little embarrassing to admit. At first, he’s not sure how to say it. Then: genius strikes. 

He waits until prom night, when they sleep together for the first time. When Cooper sleeps with anyone at all for the first time. They lay in her bed afterward because her parents are out of town and they have all night. 

It takes him longer than he’d like to admit to pluck up the courage, but he eventually draws a line from his finger to her heart. 

“What are you doing?” she asks, looking slightly amused. 

Cooper shrugs a shoulder. “Loose thread. I fixed it.” 

She opens her mouth, starts to ask him what he means, but she seems to figure it out as her face flushes bright pink. “Oh, Cooper. I mean… um. Thank you. But I… I can’t…” 

“You don’t have to do it back,” he rushes to assure her. Fuck, this is worse than he thought. 

“No, no.” Janet cradles his face in her baby-pink-manicured hands. Her prom dress, the same shade, is crumpled on the floor. “It’s so nice of you. Seriously. You’re like the cutest thing ever. It’s just, my parents, if they found out…” 

“Right, no, yeah. It’s fine, Jan.” Cooper cannot get out of there fast enough. He makes some awful excuse about how his own parents will be home soon and he needs to get back before he’s missed. 

Janet watches him get dressed, stops him before he can get out the door. She takes his hand and dusts his knuckles with a kiss. “Someday,” she says, rubbing his thumb. “I promise. I’ll give you one of my mine.” 

Feeling slightly more reassured, he kisses her goodbye. 

They break up three months later. Cooper signs up for the Marines.

6 - Agnes 

“I require all my clients to give me one of their threads.” Agnes has her thin hands folded on her desk, her lipstick a professional shade of red. Not a hair is out of place on her head. Her suit has lines so sharp they look like they could cut him. In other words, she strikes Cooper as a woman who knows what she’s doing. 

She’s still talking. “It’s a cutthroat industry out here, Mr. Howard. I have to be sure you really want this, and that means commitment. So you tell me.” She steeples her fingers, stares at him expectantly. “What are you willing to give?” 

Agnes Powell is not the first agent Cooper has met with. She’s not the third or the fourth or even the fifth. All of them had found something in him lacking – just not meant for the screen is the phrase haunting his nightmares.  

If he doesn’t sign with someone soon, it’s back to readjustment. That hasn’t been going so well for him, being a civilian. War had been bigger than life; he needs something to fill this new space inside him.   

He studies his hands. Five threads left. He’s still young, and he wants a family. Not for the first time, he wishes he’d been a little more discerning over the years. 

Agnes blinks, tilts her head. “Hollywood is the best step you’ll ever take, Mr. Howard, and I’m eager to take it with you. I think you’ve got talent; I really do. It’s just one little thread, right?” 

Cooper rubs the empty space around his left pinkie. One thread not to go back to his job as a bagger at the Super Duper Mart. One thread to potentially leave the mundanity of normal life behind. He’s given them up for less.

He reaches across the desk to shake Agnes’ hand. “Just one little thread,” he agrees.

7 - Sebastian Leslie

In his right mind, Cooper would never hand Sebastian one of his four remaining threads. Three hours of steady drinking and mindless celebration have driven him from his right mind. Agnes had come through – she’s gotten him a role and not just any role. A starring role. 

It’s a Western, which is not a genre he would’ve picked, but Sebastian had clapped him on the shoulder when he first hears. 

“They’re big, Coop. Trust me on this. You’re going to be huge.” Then he’d offered to buy him a drink, and Cooper had said why the hell not. 

Filming starts in a week, and he’s determined to spend most of the time not-sober. Sobriety gives him too much time to think about how he could fuck this up. It’s a lot easier to shed that self-doubt when the room is hot and swirling and Sebastian is in his ear pitching all sorts of storylines. 

The hero. The villain. The heartthrob. 

Cooper snorts. “Neither of us has the face for that.” 

Sebastian makes an obnoxious buzzer sound. “Wrong! Women flock to this face.” He frames his with a flourish. “It’s not about the features, it’s about the confidence. They love that shit.” 

“I’ll leave you to them,” Cooper laughs. He downs the next shot, which has somehow ended up in his hand. 

Slinging his arm over his shoulder, Sebastian clinks his own glass against Cooper’s newly empty one. “You play this right, Coop, you’re going to rule this town. Just do me a favor and take me along with you, yeah?”

“Sure I will.” Agnes had been right about everything – the industry was cutthroat, and he hasn’t managed to make a lot of friends out here. Sebastian is pretty much it. As far as Cooper can tell, he owes it to him to pay back that generosity.

Tequila-addled and high on imagined success, Cooper holds up his hand. “I’ll do you one better than a favor. I’ll make you a promise.” 

Sebastian stares at him dully for a moment before his eyes gleam with unshed tears. “You bastard,” he sniffs. “You know I’m an emotional drunk.” Half-sobbing, he pats Cooper on the chest, right over the heart, as he sticks his own in place. 

When Cooper wakes up the next morning with a pounding headache, he squints at the new line of red encircling his finger. Bleary memories of exchanging threads swim to the surface, and he sighs. Well. Shit. Old habits, it seems, die hard.

8 - Barbara 

Barbara laughs when he tells her about Janet. Her teeth and earrings gleam in the soft glow of their candlelit dinner. She holds her wine glass with an elegance he can’t help but admire. 

“Eighteen?” she echoes. “Absurdly young for a lifetime, don’t you think?” 

Cooper shrugs. “Yeah, well. I was an optimist.” He tilts his head toward where her fingers clutch the glass stem. “How about you? I’m almost afraid to ask how many spaces you’ve got left.” 

She takes a measured sip before setting her glass down precisely where it had been when she picked it up. “Six,” she tells him. 

“Wow.” Assuming her relationship with her parents is decent, that means she’s only given two away by her late twenties. “Some people might call that cold-hearted.” 

Barb slices into her steak. “I prefer to think of myself as selective.” She arches an eyebrow, as though challenging him to break through all of those restrictions, to be one of those she selects. 

Somehow, miraculously, he must because when he gets down on one knee, she accepts the ring and the thread he offers. She even gives him one of her own. 

It’s a few years later, and they’re sitting on a ridiculously large couch in the ridiculously large house he can afford. Barb reclines against his chest; he’s reading through the latest script Agnes has sent his way with his elbow propped against the back of the couch. 

Barb breaks the silence. “You know what I’ve been thinking?” 

“Mmm?” he hums, right in the middle of a monologue and only half-paying attention. “What’ve you been thinking?” 

She lifts one hand and examines the back of it. “It might be nice to have a new thread.” 

That gets his attention. “Oh yeah?” It takes a minute for understanding to dawn – then she turns on him with such a pair of bedroom eyes that it clicks into place. “Oh.” 

She runs her fingers over the back of his hand. “If you’ve got room, that is.” 

“Baby, I’ve got room for as many as you want,” Cooper says, already scooping her into his arms. “As long as it’s not more than two.” 

He carries her, laughing, to bed. 

A few more years, and Cooper is not so blinded by the lights of Hollywood anymore. Barb, however, seems to be capable of shielding her own eyes from whatever shit is going on at Vault-Tec. Things get more and more sour between them. The fault line in his heart grows bigger and bigger. 

Until it cracks open completely. 

He drives home in a haze, replaying the staticked voice of his wife as she proposed the end of the world. When he walks into the house, he stands for a minute in the living room, not moving, not thinking, just letting himself breathe in and out while he still can. This is going to hurt like a motherfucker. 

He doesn’t let himself do it immediately. He’s made enough rash decisions – this one deserves time. Two days later, he pulls the kitchen shears out of the knife block. 

Cooper is not entirely certain how one is supposed to do this. Eventually, he decides on clutching the thread between his teeth and stretching his arm as far out as it can get. Places the mouth of the scissors to the edge of the thread. Squeezes his eyes shut. And cuts. 

There’s so much pain, it’s like his other senses give up. His vision goes dark, and he collapses to the ground, the scissors clattering off somewhere. All he can hear is the rush of blood through his ears. For a minute, his heart beats so off-kilter, he worries he’s gone into cardiac arrest. But slowly, surely, it gets back to normal, and his eyesight comes back – blurred and imperfect, but good enough to let him stumble into his bedroom and collapse onto the mattress. Good enough for him to see the string that once shone scarlet is now a bitter, ugly black. 

9 - Janey 

Nobody’s perfect is an age-old adage that Cooper has heard dozens, if not hundreds, of times throughout his life from all sorts of people. Well, those people haven’t met his kid. The connection is instant. The very second she lands in his arms, he feels the ninth thread encircle his finger. 

He counts her fingers and toes, a perfect ten of each. He watches her flawless nose crinkle as she winds up for another round of wailing. 

“Good set of lungs on that one,” a nurse remarks as she bustles around him. 

Not good, Cooper would tell her if he could pay attention to anything other than Janey. Perfect. 

She is the one thread he never, not for one minute, regrets. 

THE GHOUL - ONE

10 - Lucy MacLean

The weeks after the bombs are hell. Cooper can’t tell which he’s sicker from: the radiation or the rapidly graying threads. Mrs. Abernathy goes first, then Janet, then Sebastian. He can’t help but imagine how they all died. The bomb for Mrs. Abernathy. Some desperate fucker guts Janet behind the shell of a grocery store. Sebastian doesn’t make it through the radiation poisoning.  

Grant and his mom are next. He does everything in his power not to think of what might have ended them. 

Agnes makes it a while. He’s become something else by the time her red runs out, something with rough skin and a body running on chemicals. Her survival makes sense to him – she’d always been a remarkably capable woman. 

Every day, he dreads the moment he opens his eyes. There is only one line of red left to him, and if it goes out, he’ll put a bullet in his head. 

The years go on, but he doesn’t change with them. The knowledge terrifies him – how long will he be around? He thought he’d be dead by eighty, but it comes and goes with no effect. He didn’t budget for this much existence. No matter how long he survives, the fact remains: he can make only one more connection. 

So he does a pretty damn good job at not making any. Can’t risk another Grant. Wouldn’t survive another Barb. Much easier to keep to himself and forget he ever even had the option.

Unfortunately, there’s a girl. He fully intends on killing her, but she talks like he hasn’t heard anyone talk for centuries, all sickly corporate. The stain of Vault-Tec is all over her. She’s a good opportunity, so he takes it, and he tries to ignore the little voice in the back of his head whispering that maybe he never has to really let her go. 

He ties her to him with everything he can think of that isn’t one of those damn threads. A cable, a lasso – hell, he even sews part of her onto him. That voice still won’t shut the fuck up. 

The worst part? He can’t even figure out the reason. What is it about her that makes him want to give her the last, shriveled part of him? She gave me the chems, he tells himself, but he knows that’s a lie. He should have shot her dead the second she tried to speak to him, and he hadn’t. It doesn’t make any goddamn sense. 

It’s no clearer to him when he sends a bullet ripping through Henry’s cheek. For himself, yes, but also for Lucy. He knows all too well what that kind of betrayal feels like. Wouldn’t be surprised if she cuts that particular thread as soon as she gets the chance. 

He holds out for as long as he can, but he’s never been a strong man. The second she shoots her mother instead of him, he feels the very last of his threads stretch between them. Permanent and maybe a mistake, but he’s hers now. 

He half-turns. Sure enough, a bridge of crimson stretches all the way to her heart. He asks if she’s coming with him. Relief fills him when she does.

bueno, empecemos. su nombre es raelyn abernathy, pero la verdad es que todos la llaman rae. tiene veinte años, estudia filosofía en glion hace ya dos años y es el skeleton 14, aka la hija del coach.

rae es la menor de tres, tiene dos hermanos mayores que también pasaron por glion ( uno sigue ahí ). su familia siempre fue bastante de clase media, se podría decir. nació en atlanta, georgia, pero se mudaron a suiza cuando cumplió catorce, porque su papá consiguió el trabajo este de coach.

los padres no le daban mucha bola, porque siempre estaban trabajando, además era la más chica, medio que se crió un poco sola. igual su familia es buena gente digamos. siempre fue muy independiente, hacía la suya, y eso se nota mucho en su manera de ser. no le gusta seguir las reglas, es bastante revoltosa, muy testaruda, en un pasado era medio caprichosa pero eso ya se le pasó.

siempre fue de manifestar absolutamente todo mediante su encanto, su seducción. cree, hasta el día de hoy, que es lo único que realmente tiene valor de ella, y la verdad es que se le da muy fácil. es muy expresiva en ese sentido, muy libre, no tiene pudor, pero nunca le va a faltar el respeto a alguien de esa manera. ah, no está nada acostumbrada a que la rechacen, se lo toma muy a pecho si algo así pasa ( siempre dentro de la lógica, por favor, nunca forzaría a nadie a nada y no se ofende si alguien le dice que no, es más amplio, más conceptual ).

para raelyn todo es un juego, le re cuesta tomarse las cosas enserio, aunque el año que estuvo trabajando de stripper en un club de la ciudad, la verdad es que se encontró con situaciones bastante horribles, tanto con ella como protagonista, como con sus compañeras. no era el mejor lugar, por decirlo así. eso la hizo chocarse un poco con la realidad.

a nivel académico she’s okay. no es la más brillante la verdad, pero de pensar que no iba a poder pasar ni una materia, ya van dos años y se puede decir que va bien. también tiene beca por fútbol ( soccer ), eso sí lo disfruta. de lo romántico es mejor ni preguntar porque she a mess.

lo del viaje la verdad que la tiene contenta, porque todo lo que es disfrutar y estar de joda, es el cielo para ella. aunque no tiene idea lo que le espera pobrecita, she’s not ready.

bueno escribí un montón, perdón, gracias si llegaron hasta acá. es que es un personaje que quiero mucho y nunca tuve la oportunidad de desarrollar al 100, así que i’m excited.

 pd. dentro de todo lo que podemos armar, me gustaría algún dramita o algo relacionado a cuando rae trabajaba como stripper; puede ser súper superficial o algo más profundo, si a alguien le interesa me dice !!

10 unexplained Arkansas mysteries

Arkansas is home to many natural wonders and scenic views, but it’s also home to unsolved mysteries.

10. Old Mike – A man only known as “Old Mike” died in the early 1900s in Nevada County. When he died, his embalmed corpse was put on display for the next 60 years hoping someone would know him. He was buried in 1975.

9. Ghost Lights – These have been seen in Crossett, as well as in Gurdon on railroad tracks. Most people who see them describe a glowing, floating white light from possibly a railroad worker who died tragically.

8. The Fouke Monster – Arkansas’ very own sasquatch, this monster has been talked about since the 1940s, but most of the accounts happen in the 70s. 7. Crop Circles – The first of these appeared in 2003 in Peach Orchard and Delaplaine.

6. Disappearance of Maud Crawford – It’s a Natural State’s Jimmy Hoffa. Maud Crawford was a lawyer in the 1950s who disappeared from her home March 2, 1957. At the time of her disappearance, a lawyer with her firm was investigating alleged mob ties to organized labor. No one asked for a ransom and her body was never found.

5. The Guy Earthquake Swarms – A series of earthquakes rattled the town of Guy in 2010 and continued for two years. (Note from THV11: Scott Ausbrooks with Arkansas Geological Survey said in 2011, “There are a network fractures and joints in the rock, cracks in the rock that basically allowed the effects, the influence of the injection well to reach the Guy- Greenbrier fault line and trigger the earthquakes.”

4. The Moonlight Murders – Texarkana was rocked by the murders of five people in 1946 by a white-hooded suspect dubbed the “Phantom Killer”. He attacked eight people over a three week period, killing five. All of his victims were couples.

3. The Edwards Murder – Garland County dispatcher Linda Edwards disappeared Aug. 22, 1976. Supposedly she had an affair with Sgt. Thurman Abernathy with the Hot Springs Police Dept. and they had gotten into a fight the night she disappeared. He was charged after her body was found in 1977. Eventually all charges were dropped against him and her case remains unsolved.

2. John Glasgow’s Disappearance – John Glasgow, an executive with CDI Contracting was last seen leaving his home in January of 2008. His vehicle was found the next day parked on Petit Jean Mountain but Glasgow has never been found.

1. The Boys on the Tracks – Probably the most famous cold case in Arkansas is the deaths of Don Henry and Kevin Ives. Their bodies were found August 23, 1987 mangled next to railroad tracks in Bryant. They were found lying on the tracks with their arms at their sides covered partially with a green tarp. Their deaths were initially ruled accidental, but after the family petitioned for the case to be reopened, new details emerged.

my take on a possible plot for FB3 (aka how the elusive aunt may be a centerpiece to it)

first, there’s a meeting of Grindelwald’s followers in Berlin - Dumbledore attends, alone and concealed, but Credence spots him (as Grindelwald tampered with the concealment spell) and they face off outside - he then makes an off-hand (or even specific) comment about their connection

Dumbledore returns to Hogwarts with the information

around this time, one of his contacts (Lally perhaps), but much more likely Yusuf, found out that the woman who was with Credence on the ship in 1901 used a fake name/identity when going onboard, and is still alive - she’s covered up her tracks post 1901, and her trail has been lost in Brazil

he sends the group there to find her - either because Credence’ comment was vague and she’s the only one who knows the truth, or because it was specific and he needs her testimony to convince him

at the same time, Grindelwald finds out about her (via a vision) - (it’s also possible that a double agent within Dumbledore’s contacts discloses to him that the woman on the ship may be in Brazil due to a vision, setting off the voyage to Rio)

he sends, among others, Credence, Queenie and Abernathy to Rio to find her, along with Grimmson (who has orders to be faster without their knowledge and poison her, making it look like she passed from a disease just before they could reach her)

the phoenix order group find her fake name in a non-magic register in Rio de Janeiro (she’s a muggle, and the register is a real thing - there was a migration wave from Sweden around the turn of the century (Linda Santiago, the actress, is swedish)) and they find out that she followed the settlers from the country to start a new life further in the country

until they have solid information about her wherabouts (by surveilling them) and to keep Credence from looking for her himself, Grimmson tries to distract him and their group by travelling to meetings with followers across the country
