Staring at the person—or body, Steve wasn’t sure anymore if the one in front of him was still his best friend or not. Was it too late? Can he save her? A million questions went into his head. A shaky breath came out of his mouth as he took a step back, too scared to face the reality in front of him. “It’s not working. Why-Why is it not-Why is it not working?!” He turned to face Max with a look that she had never seen on his face before—the look of despair.

Max took a step back from him, the memory of what had just happened to her hours ago creeping into her mind, not a feeling she would like to experience again. She stammered, couldn’t form a sentence as the words jumbled into some incoherent sounds. “I-I don’t get it. It's supposed to work. She must have seen the gate by now. She-She must….run towards it, unless……” Her voice died at the end as a realization hit her like a nightmare.

With tears brimming at the edge of her eyes, she turned to look at Steve who looked up as the realization hit him too—so did the other people in that room. Robin’s shoulder sank at the thought of losing one of her best friends. Almost all of them flinched when Steve grabbed the nearest thing to him and threw it to the other side of the room, not being able to control his feelings at all during that moment. Letting out a few curse words, he grabbed her shoulders, shaking her violently, wishing that it would wake her up. Wishing that it would wake him up from the living nightmare. “Not like this. Not like this. I won’t let you go away like this. No. No.” He puts his forehead on her shoulder, gripping her side tightly, scared that she might start to levitate from the ground like Max did.

“If this is about your parents. To hell with them. They don't deserve you but-but you have us. All of us. We’re all here for you. Come on, please.” Shaky laughter came out of him as the tears streamed down faster down his cheeks.

“Please……, don’t leave me. That’s all I ever asked from you. And-and I don’t know if you can hear me right now, but I know sometimes there are moments where you feel like you don't exist. That’s untrue. You’ve always been there. In my world. Ever since the beginning.”

“Those pink shoes that are always left untied. It bothered me so much, you know? I never told you but it always does. You always come to school with them untied so I brave up myself to do something about it, that day when I first approached you. I was shy. When you didn’t say anything, I thought you might see me as a creep for noticing that.” He paused as the world began to crumble, his voice faded as the fates held him by the throat.

Dustin stepped forward, tears staining his cheeks as he tried his best to muster a brave look. “When I got back from Summer Camp, you were the first one to notice me. Not Steve. Not the party. You. Mom was buying something in the store and suddenly there you were, knocking on the window and I’ll never forget what you said. ‘Dustin Henderson, you don’t know how long I’ve been waiting for this date to come. Welcome home, kid.’ Those words—seem meaningless but it warmed my heart the fact that you remember the date of my arrival. That day I know how special it is to have someone waiting to meet you. To have someone whose faces light up when they meet you cause that’s how happy they are. And I just-And I just want you to know that-that’s me. I’m that someone when I see you. I’ll never forget you.”

Soon one by one stepped up, telling their stories about her-about her in their world—including Eddie who despite having very limited stories to tell about, still stepped up and told them about his encounter with her. “You’re like a sister to me. There were times where I stayed up at night and wished there was a world out there where you really are my sister. You cared and loved people so dearly and it is a privilege to be one of those people you cared and loved about.” That's what Max said about her.

Steve's steady breath began to shake again as he felt her slipping away from his grasp. “No. No. Were you not listening at all?! I-I, God, please.” Using all the strength left inside him, he tries to hold her still. “Run to it. Please,” He called out her name, voice cracking as he did so. “Hold on. Please hold onto us. Was it not enough? Not enough reasons? Not just me but every person in this room, they-they held you dearly close to their heart. You make-you make our days better with your presence and it's sickening that your world won’t let you see the truth that is laid in front of your eyes.”

He could faintly hear Nancy and the others calling out his name, but all he could hear was the memories of them together. Leaning close to her ear, he whispered one last thing. “It was never empty. That space in my heart. And it is not filled by Nancy. It is full by the thoughts of you.” Then he lets go of her body, letting fates decide what happened next.

Hearing all of those words entirely made her draw a deep, shuddering breath. Tears stained her cheeks as she took a little step back, looking at Vecna who was getting closer to her—still taunting her with his lies and words despite what she had just heard. “No one loves you. Not entirely. Lies are all they said. I can show you the truth.”

“Those are the truth.” She took a step back again, looking behind her shoulders.

It tilted its head to the side. “Or is it?” It said.

Raising its hand to the air, Vecna spoke once again. ��Wasn’t it death that you had wished for? That you long for.” It took a painfully slow step towards her, time flew slower around her as the few moments felt like forever. She looks back to the portal that seems so close yet so far from.

The barrier between her life and death.

What is the point of going back to her life if she hadn’t faced all of those fears in front of her. “An unloving family you have. Friends who couldn’t give the same attention as you gave them. A lover you have not. Is that the kind of world you are willing to go back to? They only care because I got you now, wrapped inside my world. The world where you exist.” Her steps come to a halt as if its words are getting inside her once more, sticking itself to her brain like a parasite that won’t come off. Those thoughts that always haunt her life. “They’ll forget not even by tomorrow. Your death would be nothing but a quick meaningless one. It’ll be as if you never existed before.”

Voices filled her ears, faintly but clear to her. Come back. Come back. Don’t leave me. I’ll never forget you. It is full of you. They said. She could feel it getting to her even from the distance between them it was as if the air around her were starting to choke her and bring her up. Tears brimming at the edge of her eyes as she looks at Vecna. Those voices. Their voices. Their words. Can she hold onto that? Would that be enough reason for her to hold on? Would she not slip away from their words if it is not strong enough?

A string of hope tied itself to her, letting her hang onto it once more, this time she refused to let go of it ever again. “You’re wrong. Not even close to the truth. You think I’m weak enough to fall for your words. To fall for my own thoughts. My nightmares. If I ever to die in your hands, being forgotten would be the last thing I intended to be in their minds.” She could feel its hold on her weakened the more she spoke of her own feelings. “I’ve found peace………not because of you. But for once in my life, I listened to that one thoughts that truly belonged to me. And I……,” Standing back tall on her feet again as the hold it had on her had gone completely. “I have no intention to succumb today.”

Then she ran.

And never once did she look back.

The warm embrace of Steve Harrington was the first thing she fell onto when she got back. Her hands slipped around him naturally, not wanting to ever let go again as he wept onto her shoulders. She still has her eyes closed, afraid that if she opened it, all of them would vanish and she would still be stuck in there. “I thought I lost you. I almost lost you.” Those are the words that Steve managed to choke out.

She could feel the others reaching to her, a hand that feels like Max’s grabbing onto her right one, brushing her thumb against hers. “Thank you,” She croaked out, opening her eyes slowly. “For everything.” A smile went up to her face as the tears still streamed down her cheeks. One by one she looks at their eyes, each filled with relief. These are the truths that her world always hides her from. The truth she never managed to see for she was too focused on the darker side of her world.

Lastly, she pulled back a little to face Steve who is avoiding her face. Everyone seems to get the memo at this point as one by one starts to leave them to have their own moment together. Nancy threw a relieved smile before she lastly exited the room alongside Robin. “Steve,” She called out his name, cupping his cheek trying to get him to look at her directly. “Hey, Steve.”

“I’m right here, aren’t I? I’m okay.” She wiped her tears away, plastering a wide smile to prove it to him. The look on Steve’s face brings her pain and comfort at the same time. The thoughts of being mourned like this mean that her presence does have a big impact in his world. “Well, physically okay. Mentally, I don’t know. It was quite a scary experience.”

“I almost lost you,” He said those words again, this time looking directly at her, leaning on her palm that is holding his face. “I don’t know how I could live with the memory of your death plagued into my mind forever. I would never get to forgive myself if that ever happened. Never.”

“What happened is none of your fault at all. It was between me and my world. Don’t blame yourself for it. You couldn’t control something of mine that I have yet to learn to control, Steve.” The close distance between them allowed her to finally hear the skipped beat of his heart at the mention of his name that comes out of her. Hearing the truth. She couldn’t help but smile at that. “My near-death experience has transferred some of my intelligence into you. You talk big words now. It’s kinda scary, it doesn't suit you at all.”

He laughs at her words before burying himself to the crook of her neck. The vibration of his laughter brings one to her too. “Was it true? The things you said earlier.” She said once the laughter died down eventually, Steve pulled back once more to look at her. “I heard everything from the other side.”

The look Steve gave her was nothing like she had ever seen before. It was never seen by her, however, it was the same look on her face every time her eyes fell onto him, the same look that is on her face right now. “I love you. I think—I know I always do yet I have always convinced myself otherwise cause I’m afraid of the outcome. You said we are both fools for loving those who-who—what was that-that you said earlier again? Gosh, your words are hard to process into my little brain sometimes.” She smiled at him as he shook his head. “Does this make us even much more of a fool for not noticing that our feelings are directed to no one else but each other?”

A chuckle escaped her. “Well, you and Nancy happened.” She said, then Steve immediately holds up a finger in the air. “Nancy always knew even when I denied it, not out loud of course. But I guessed there were some real feelings and affection involved in that relationship that makes the ending hurts. I was younger and stupid.” He said.

“The last part seems to not have changed that much.” She commented, making him flick her forehead. “Ouch. Be careful with me. I’m fragile. I almost died.”

At the last word of her sentence, Steve’s shoulder sank once more, reminded of what almost happened to her earlier. He couldn’t resist the temptation to hold her close again, so he did. He wrapped his arms around her once more, not wanting to ever let go as his lips found the side of her face before finding her own. A sweet soft yet what felt so intimate gesture between the two of them. “You’re staying close to me from now on. No more near-death experiences. I won’t let you go before me.”

She let her head rest at the crook of his neck as her finger fiddled with the end of his hair. “No, you idiot. We’re a buy one get one package. If we go down, we do it together.” She could feel Steve’s smile onto her hair. As the two stayed there in silence for the next few moments, doing nothing but completely being enamored by each other's presence. Their line finally found a way to crossed one another, connecting them for eternity.

“Guess this makes us the fools in love.” He said.

She nodded quietly, the tiredness finally caught up to both of them. Her world is still far from fully being filled by the light. But as long as she no longer resides on the darker side of it. She doesn’t mind staying on whatever side is this. The side where only truth remains around her. The side where his heart beats at the mention of her name.

more a/n : i don’t think i mentioned it but they were not awkwardly standing hugging each other during those last scenes. they were sitting on the floor.

A 20+ minute video on YT titled: Y/F/N being done with dating rumors

It's a panel interview. I'm sitting next to the director and my co-star, who happened to be Henry Cavill in this particular film.

An interviewer asks me, "you have been paired with a lot of brilliant men. How do you manage not to fall for them?"

It becomes twice more a throwaway question when it's continued with, "first Captain America, now Superman, how can you control yourself?"

What a day for journalism.

I immediately raise my brows, "control myself? I mean, beside the fact that you somehow believe humans aren't smart exhibit any form of control over themselves, there is such a thing as not being interested. Don't get me wrong, Henry's great--"

I roll my eyes and add, "and before you ask me, Chris Evans is great too, but I don't feel the need to actively control myself around them any more than I feel the need with any other man in this room. An believe me, I can imagine why people are so excited to see them because I've seen them first hand."

I motion to Henry beside me, "I'm sure it's a compliment to him that you, sir, think so highly of this" I turn to the man I was talking about and slap his toned bicep, "brilliant man, but for the record, if in asking this question you're are projecting your own lack of self-control, I feel like you might need some help with that."

Henry turns to his lap and breaks into a laugh.

I'm sitting on a stool reading a cue card, "You did a charity game with NBA player Rudy Gobert and you both seemed to have enjoyed yourselves in the footage. Have you two gotten any closer after that?"

I throw the card behind me, "it was a really fun game. I enjoyed feeling like a helpless child next to someone that tall. We did get lunch after the shoot for the content we did, but other than that we haven't talked much."

The staff asks, "so you didn't have a date recently?"

I contort in to a confused face. There is a harsh closeup, "I'm dating Chris Evans, remember?"

--CUT TO--

It was a quick fire round of questions, and I was specifically told to answer one over the other.

"Chris Evans or Henry Cavill."

I roll my eyes, "hnnng, can't I just chuck both of them into the ocean?" I break into a laugh, "I can already imagine the angry women on the other side of the screen."

I place a hand on my face and give it serious thought, about as serious as I get.

I sigh, "like I hate both of them so much it just hurts." I release a chuckle, "okay, okay, in all seriousness, I feel like you win whichever you choose because their both really great guys."

You nervously fiddled with your shirt as you stood outside Shaun’s flat, he had invited everyone over to drink and talk, and you and Neil decided it would be best to tell them all you were dating.

“Hey, just breathe, it’s okay.” Neil said gently.

You took a breath and nodded your hand, lacing your fingers with his quickly before letting go and knocking on the door.

“I just hope Shaun is okay with it.”

“Shaun’s a big boy now, he can accept it.”

You gave Neil a disapproving looked and he gave you an apologetic one.

The door open and Shaun stood there with a smile on his face as he stepped aside.

“You came.” He smiled.

“Of course I did Shauny!” You laughed.

You ruffled Shaun’s hair, making him smile even more and stepped into the flat, followed by Neil and Shaun who trialed behidn you both.

“Everyone is already here.”

You smiled sweetly at your brother and watched as he wondered back over to Dr Glassman. Claire, Jared, Lim, Alex and Morgan where all there too.

“Look who’s finally arrived.” Jared teased.

You laughed and walked over to him, Claire and Morgan and took a seat with them all.

“It’s nice of Shaun to have us all.” Claire smiled.

“Yeah, he’s really trying, I’m proud of him.”

You looked at your brother before turning back to them all.

“He’s making an effort, it’s good for him.” Morgan agreed.

You nodded and hummed along, jumping out of your skin when a glass appeared in front of your face. You flicked your gaze up to Neil and took it from him with a warm smile, your face heating with embarrassment.

“Thanks.”

“Welcome.” He smiled back.

Neil took a seat next to you. Claire narrowed her eyes and glanced between you both.

Glassman, Alex and Shaun all came over. Glassman and Alex sat in front of you with the others, and Shaun sat on the floor next to you, looking up.

“There HAS to be something going on between you two.” She muttered.

“Maybe there is.” Neil smirked.

Neil slipped his arm around your shoulder and pulled you a little closer into his side as you tried to fight your blush.

Her face lit up with shock and excitement.

“No way!” She gushed.

You raised your head defensively.

“Yes, Neil and I are dating. We thought we’d tell you all together while you’re together.”

“Congratulations.” Glassman smiled.

You beamed warmly at him, scratching the back of your head sheepishly.

“Thanks!”

“I think you two work well together, you suit each other.”

“Thank you Morgan.” Neil replied.

“Yeah, and we finally don’t have to see you two pinning after each other.” Alex laughed.

The others laughed and you turned to Shaun who was staring between you and Neil. You frowned and slid from your chair, kneeling in front of your brother.

“Shaun?” You asked softly.

Everyone went quiet, Shaun stared at Neil and stood up. Worried, you stood up too, moving out of Shaun’s way but close enough to step in if something happened.

“No.” Shaun said.

“What?” Neil asked.

“No, you can’t date (Y/N), I won’t allow you to date her.”

Glassman stood up, placing his hand on Shaun’s shoulder.

“Shaun, you can’t decide who your sister dates.”

The others anxiously watched the scene play out.

Shaun shrugged Glassman off and glared and Neil, balling his hands into fists. You tooks his hands and held them there, stepping in front of him and Neil.

“Shaun...” you whispered, “it’s okay...”

“It’s not okay!” Shaun argues, “what if he hurts you?”

Now it made sense, shaun was worried Neil was going to hurt you.

“Shaun, trust me. Hurting (Y/N) is the last thing I want to do.” Neil said calmly.

You searched Shaun’s face, but he still glared at Neil. Shaun took his hands from yours and moved in front of you protectingly, his head hel high as he stared down Neil.

“(Y/N) has been hurt, she’s been hurt a lot. I don’t like seeing (Y/N) hurting, I don’t like seeing her sad. (Y/N) should be happy, she deserves to be happy, does Dr Melendez make you happy?”

“Yes Shaun, he does.” You replied softly.

Shaun fiddled with his hands and ran his figures through his hair a little before he placed his hands back to his sides.

“If you hurt (Y/N) I will hurt you.” Shaun said darkly.

“Did you.. just threaten me?” Neil asked.

You swallowed nervously and waited for Shaun’s response.

“Yes, I did.”

It went silent, and Neil chuckled, holding his hands up.

“I have no plans on hurting her Shaun, I love (Y/N) is never hurt her.”

Shaun seemed to accept this answer because he moved out of your way and let you walk over to Neil.

Everyone turned to Shaun in pure shock and he simply smile, a smile that was directed at you, and you smiled back.

“I like seeing you happy.” Shaun laughed lightly.

You laughed back and beamed every brighter.

“I know you do Shauny!”

You all sat back down, you with Neil, this time Shaun sat next to you.

“Damn.. I didn’t know he had it in him...” Alex whispered.

“I think that was the first time I’ve seen Shaun show any sort of really anger.” Morgan muttered.

Shaun paid them no mind and turned his attention back to the TV, his hand holding the edge of your shirt like he did when you, him and Steve were together.

You played with Shaun’s hair while you rested your head on Neil’s shoulder.

Shaun respected Neil, you knew that, but you also knew that Shaun would live up to his promise to hurt Neil is Neil ever hurt you

Authors Note: This is my first time writing for any marvel character so I apologize if they’re ooc! This fic does deal with some heavy topics but I tried to keep it manageable? Feedback is always appreciated❤

You remember the day of the snap. You were rushing around your offices in DC frantically trying to get in touch with other diplomats to do anything- absolutely anything- to curb the chaos erupting across the globe.

"Richards!" You yelled, waving the stout man into your office. Richards was by far your favorite intern in the office, and the most competent. "I need the delegation from France on the phone as soon as humanly possible they're the last European country we need to talk to." Your colleague furiously scribbled on his notepad and nodded.

"What do you want me to relay to-" he began to ask.

"Finish your damn sentence Richards I'm on a tight schedule here" you said, exasperation obvious in your tone. When he didn't reply you peered up to see what had interrupted him.

Whatever you expected to see, nothing would have prepared you for the reality of what you saw. Richards face was beginning to crumble away like dust. The right side of his face was gone and his left eye was moving frantically as he shook his disintegrating hands like he was trying to get a bug off.

"Jesus Christ!" You exclaimed. You rushed over to him from behind your desk only to turn your attention to screams from outside your door. In the second you tore your eyes away from Richards he had completely disintegrated. Only a his notebook and pen remained. You threw the door open with the intention of getting help.

The hallway was in disarray, miscellaneous items strewn across the floor and people crying loudly. Not finding anyone in their right mind to help you, you moved towards the end of the hallway. You pushed your way through the crowd gathered around the small television and to your horror you saw two reporters scrambling to hold up a third who was dissolving just as Richards had minutes ago.

Suddenly you realized what was happening. "Fuck. Fuck fuck fuck fuck" you rushed towards the stairs, pulling out your cellphone at the same time.

The snap.

It was a hypothetical situation brought up to you by Tony Stark in a debriefing with him a few weeks ago. An apocalyptic scenario. The worst possible outcome of whatever showdown was happening between Thanos and the avengers right now.

"Come on come on come on Maria pick up please" you pleaded to nobody. Your girlfriend's phone rang once, twice, three times before it went to voice mail. It's okay. Don't jump to conclusions. You told yourself. Instead of breaking down like you wanted to, you ran down into the main lobby and went out to the front of the building.

"Take me to the avengers headquarters" you barked at the driver in the car parked at the doors. "Ma'am that area is off lim-" he tried to reason with you. You knew you were being a bit of an asshole but you couldn't bring yourself to care. "I don't give a damn sir. You will take me there now or I swear to god-" you didn't get to finish the sentence before an agent came up behind you and put their hand on your shoulder. You shook his hand off and whipped around, a scowl already painted on your face.

"Excuse me miss? I've been sent by Ms.Carter, you're needed at headquarters immediately"

The ride to the avengers headquarters was a blur. The agents had tried to make small talk with you at first but the pitying look in their eyes told you everything you needed to know. She was gone. Maria Hill was dead.

I didn't even get to say goodbye.

Later that day Natasha and the rest of the avengers along with a few Wakandans stumbled into the conference room occupied by yourself, Sharon Carter, and two other agents you didn't bother to remember the names of. The second she was in the door she rushed over to embrace you. Her hair was caked with blood and she smelled of dirt but you clung onto her all the same. A sob broke from your chest, the first since you had found out the news.

"Oh baby it's okay I'm okay I'm safe we're gonna be okay" Natasha tried to reassure you. You shook your head into her chest, unable to articulate what you wanted to say. She put her hand under your chin and lifted your head so she could meet your eyes. Finally the words fell from your lips. "Maria Hill is dead."

Natasha stopped cold. Any hint of a smile disappeared from her face and her hands dropped to her sides. A chill had set over the entire room.

Nothing was ever the same. Sure you and Natasha still came home to the same apartment every night, still cooked in the same kitchen, still sat on the same couch, still fell into the same bed, but nothing was the same.

You had forgotten how to cook for two people. An extra serving of dinner always sat in the bottom of pan, mocking you and making you lose all appetite. Maria's keys sat in the same spot that they always had, her favorite jacket hung on the coat rack. Her bright orange toothbrush sat on the counter gathering dust.

You and Natasha clung together at night as if you were trying to keep each other from falling apart. Some nights the two of you just cried until all the water was gone from your bodies. Everything in your life seemed to be cracking at the seams, because how the hell could it not when only half of your heart was home.

Things at the avengers headquarters were hectic as they always had been, except this time the responsibility of keeping the universe afloat fell onto Natasha. Tony had immediately retreated upstate, Steve was across the country raising morale as best as he could, Clint was an international criminal, and Bruce refused to step foot in the facility. Every night Natasha came home with a folder bursting with paperwork to add to her stack on the dining table.

At your job things weren't much better. The secretary of state along with half of your department was gone and with the current state of affairs you needed every person available. The international community was in shambles, England had to elect a new PM, several oil crisises had begun in the middle east and in Asia the lack of labor forces had caused economies to plummet. Begrudgingly, you had accepted more influence in the government and by now you were unofficially running the state department.

Somehow you and Natasha had managed to find the time to establish an orphanage in the city for kids effected by the snap. The organization was a sliver of humanity in the consuming depression the world was in. The kids there made you feel like maybe things would turn out okay somehow.

You had named it the Hill house after her. Natasha had chuckled when you suggested it, obviously understanding the historical irony. "Maria would've been so embarrassed to have something named after her, she was too humble for her own good." She smiled briefly at the thought of the brunettes inevitable bashfulness.

Years had passed and things hadn't gotten any easier. You and Natasha had made it through, both for each other and for Maria's sake. Every fight between the two of you had ended with tears and apologies and thoughts of how angry Maria would be if you two drove the other away.

You'd officially been named secretary of state despite your numerous protests. The government had attempted to name Nat head of the avengers initiative, but she had immediately refused the title of director. "That's fury's job he'll be so pissed when he comes back and I'm in it" she said. Nobody refuted her assumption that there was even a way to bring Fury, to bring anyone, back.

As the days passed you and Natasha worked, came home, and slept. Things had fallen into a sort of sick routine.

Then Scott Lang showed up outside the avengers complex and everything changed. Suddenly Natasha was talking about time travel and something called the "quantum realm." She had tried to explain, the infinity stones were dust in our time line so they had to go into others to retrieve them. But in all honestly the theories seemed absurd at best to you.

You had gotten into an argument with her about it. How were you supposed to let her leave you as well? When there was a more than real possibility she wouldn't come back.

Vormir. Thats where her mission was. It was supposed to take something like a second in your time until she was back. She promised she'd be back. She'd held your face in her hands and vowed not to leave you all alone in the world.

But promises cant always be kept.

"Where's Nat?" Was the only thing that came out of your mouth when the avengers reappeared. You counted them quickly, hoping you'd just missed her. When she still wasn't there, you looked to Clint. "Where is she?"

Clint stared back at you with sad eyes. He looked like a man who had seen too much, experienced too much to ever live normally again.

"One of us had to die and she-" the rest of Clint's words turned to white noise. Dead. One of them had to die. Natasha had to die.

The world became a blur. Everything was too suffocating and nothing at the same time. You must have been screaming but you couldn't hear a sound. You felt strong arms wrap around you seconds later and hold you tight even as you thrashed about. You felt sorry for whoever was hugging you because you were sure you'd punched them in the chest more than once.

Natasha Romanoff is dead.

Coping is not the correct word for how you lived. You did not cope. How could you have? First you had lost Maria, nearly five years ago, without a goodbye. Now you'd lost Nat.

They were the things that brought light into your life. Maria's terrible dad jokes and Natasha's loud laugh rung in your ears when you laid in bed at night. If you concentrated hard enough you could nearly remember how it felt to be sandwiched between the two of them. Maria's arm around your waist and Natasha's head in the crook of your neck. Or your legs wrapped around Maria's waist and Natasha's hands running along your back. You could almost smell their perfumes when you walked in the bathroom. But everything was just out of reach. Your memories haunted you more than any ghost could have.

They were dead. Natasha Romanoff was dead. Maria Hill was dead.

You barely ate, you barely slept, your house looked unlived in because you spent as long as possible in the office every day. It was only when your interns shoved you into a company car at 2 am that you finally went home.

The woman who you saw in the mirror looked nothing like yourself. She had your nose and your lips but her eyes were dead and her cheeks were hollow.

Steve tried to come around and get you to talk, as did Tony and Pepper but nobody made any progress. Even Sharon, your best friend, couldn't break through to you. She got further than everyone else by getting you to eat, but getting you to talk was impossible.

"Get some fucking sleep for the love of god" Sharon sighed as she pushed you into the apartment at 2 am yet again. You mumbled a weak "okay" and closed the door. The picture hanging in the hallway mocked you. It was of you, Maria and Natasha on the couch. You were spread across both of their laps and Natasha's head was laying on Maria's shoulder, all of you asleep. You remembered Natasha punching Tony in the arm when she found out he took it, but she had hung it up all the same.

Without shedding so much as your belt you walked into your room fell onto your king size bed. The room was absolutely silent. You hated it.

"If we're all going to be sleeping in one bed there's no way in hell it's gonna be a queen" Maria insisted, pointing at the mattress next to her. "Natasha spreads out so much she could probably take up a queen by herself." Natasha shoved Maria's shoulder at her comment but the large grin threatened to break onto her face gave her true emotions away.

You curled up in the middle of the mattress, refusing to push into what would be Maria's spot on the right of you, or Nat's on your left. The bed felt suffocatingly large now.

When you awoke from your third nightmare that night nobody was there to hold you to their chest. You bolted from the bed into the bathroom and vomited into the toilet. Tears sprung up in your eyes and you collapsed on the floor, utterly defeated.

"Wake up honey come on everything is okay you're safe don't worry" Natasha's smooth voice washed over you as you were pulled out of your sleep. You were drenched in sweat and your heart was beating a mile a minute. "I was in Baghdad again" you mumbled out. Maria hummed understandingly and rubbed your back. "Nobody is going to hurt you again baby not while we're here"

You no longer dreamt of bombings at embassies and guns pointed in your face. Instead you saw Richards drift away before your eyes. Heard Maria's voice calling out to you desperately. Felt Natasha's hand slip from yours as she fell off the cliff.

You couldn't take it anymore. You were exhausted, mentally, physically, emotionally. You didn't want to do anything, you didn't want to talk to anyone, you didn't want to be alive anymore.

TRIGGER WARNING**

The wind whipped through your hair as you stared down the side of the 27 story building. Cars looked like little toys from this height and it was almost humorous to hear the honks and yells from tiny cab drivers. You faced upwards for a moment, letting the morning sun soak into your skin.

"What the hell are you doing up there?" Sharon Carter threw open the door to the roof entrance. How did she get up here? How did she even find you.

"Do not do this. Please don't." She repeated, trying to keep her voice steady.

Something inside you snapped at her words.

"Don't even try to talk me down Sharon. Don't say people need me. I know that people need me Sharon I know that. I know that practically the entire state department is riding on my shoulders. I know that there are 150 million people left in the US who are looking for something, anything to show them that its gonna be okay but Sharon, and I know this is selfish, but what about me! Sharon what about me. I am so tired, so fucking tired of being selfless. Maria is gone. Natasha is gone. And I know there's something worth living for I know that you love me and Tony loves me and Pepper but god fucking damn it Sharon it's not enough." Your voice cracked several times through your tears.

"I hate myself because I don't care that half the world is dead, I care that they're dead. I watched people fall apart right in front of me why the hell didn't I go with them" you let all the rage, the sadness, the despair in your body explode through your chest.

You could see Sharon's eyes threatening to let the tears in them spill over onto her cheeks. It was obvious she felt utterly helpless in this situation.

"What if she comes back and you're not here." Sharon said, just loud enough for you to hear her.

"Don't. Say that" you tried to breathe somewhat regularly.

"There's a chance. Even if it's the smallest one, this would take away your chance of seeing them again."

Images flashed through your mind of Maria and Natasha huddled together in your bed, trying not to say anything about the hole in the middle of them; Maria and Nat placing white and blue flowers on your grave; Maria and Nat rushing into your apartment to greet you only to see Sharon, ready to deliver the worst news they could receive. Even if there was a .0001% chance they would come back you couldn't force them to grieve for you as well.

An even louder sob spilled from your lips. You screamed out into the sky like you were being torn apart, but when Sharon pulled on your waist you let yourself fall back into her arms and cling onto her neck. You could feel her body shaking with sobs as well. She slowly sat down in the middle of the roof, rocking you back and forth.

"Sharon" you mumbled into her jacket.

"Sharon it hurts" you cried. "It hurts so bad" Sharon only nodded and pressed her lips to your head, your hair muffling her sobs.

"I know"

The final battle was worse than you could have ever imagined. Footage from the city showed the destruction that leveled large portions of the harbor and financial district. Blood was splattered on the concrete, painting it red and bodies littered the streets. Thankfully you had heeded Steve's warning and ordered an emergency evacuation nearly a week ago.

You watched nervously as the battle raged on, seeing some of your closest friends fall to their knees.

Then the first portal opened.

The battlefield was suddenly bathed in yellow light and a figure walked out. Slowly you recognized them: the Wakandan king and his sister. More appeared. Scarlet witch, Quill, Mantis, Steven Strange, Peter, and Valkyrie all appeared seemingly out of nowhere.

The snap was being reversed.

"Giles!" You barked at the intern sitting next to you. "You are to monitor this screen and nothing else until the battle ends. I want updates every 10 minutes and a call if anything significant happens. Now I must go"

You rushed down the stairs and into the parking lot. A quick call was made and within minutes you were in a helicopter headed to New York.

As soon as you landed on the Avengers' building's helipad you were scrambling to get off and into the head quarters. You sprinted down the stairs to the 17th floor labeled 'special forces and directors office.' It seemed the most likely place that Maria would be. If she was alive.

You pushed open the double doors to the main hallway and there she was, exactly how she'd been 5 years ago. "Maria!" You yelled, flinging yourself on her the second she turned around. You sobbed into her shoulder and gripped her coat like a life line.

"Maria I can't believe you're here. You're really here right? This isn't some sick joke?"

"It's really me" Maria smiled. "You look like shit what happened" she brushed a piece of your hair behind your ear. "Maria I- you left me" you said between tears. "What?" She whispered.

"You've been gone for five years Maria"

The battle was over. Tony was dead. He died a hero, the man he always had been deep down. Your heart broke for Pepper, who had lost the love of her life, and for Morgan who would grow up without him.

The first thing Maria asked when the avengers began to gather back at shield was where Natasha was. You nearly started crying again. "Oh Maria.... I" you couldn't bare to say it. "I am so sorry I am so so sorry she-"

Steve finished your sentence for you, his voice colder than you’d ever heard it, "Natasha is dead."

Maria grieved almost exactly as Natasha had. She threw herself into work, focusing most of her time on catching up on the 5 years she missed. She moved back into your apartment, a place you hadn't slept in in almost 2 months. Ever since your incident Sharon had essentially held you hostage in her house, only letting you leave by yourself for work.

The universe really was fucked up. You thought to yourself. The thing you'd been wishing for since the snap had come true. Maria Hill was home, the other half of your heart. Her muscular arms wrapped around you at night and her brunette hair tickled your nose when you hugged her. But Natasha left to make sure Maria could return. Your heart was still broken. Still incomplete.

Now it was Maria that needed to be held together. You knew how to hold her carefully so she wouldn't break because by now you were somewhat of an expert on grieving the deaths of your lovers.

That doesn't mean it didn't hurt like hell to see Natasha's leather jacket sit unused on her hook. To see her red toothbrush on the corner of the counter. To feel her side of the bed cold and empty. But somehow you were going to have to live with that.

It was a Monday morning when Maria got the call.

"Hill speaking" she said in her stern tone. "Hi Bruce." She spoke curtly, but with a warmer tone at the man's voice.

"Why do I need to get down there on a Monday morning, my day off my I remind you" Maria sounded slightly annoyed at whatever the doctor had suggested.

"I-" she sat up suddenly. "I'll be right there. Yes I'm bringing her. Okay goodbye" Maria hung up and swung her legs out of the bed.

"We need to go to Avengers headquarters now. There's something going on with the mission" Maria said as she tugged on a pair of jeans and a tshirt.

You sat anxiously next to Maria at the edge of the forest. Steve was due to come back 2 minutes ago but apparently an unannounced change had been made in the plans.

"Someone's coming through Scott throw the breaker quickly!" Bruce shouted.

A loud buzzing filled the clearing before a small figure appeared on the platform before them. But it was not Steve. No this person was much shorter, and her long red hair faded into blonde-

"Natasha?" You said, incredulously. The redhead turned around. She immediately sprinted towards the two of you and pulled you both into a tight embrace. "I thought I'd never see you again" she mumbled into your shoulder. "Either of you."

All three spots in the king bed were full again. No toothbrushes were left on the counter, no jackets hung limply on hooks. The house had life breathed into it again, but something was off.

Of course it would take time to heal from the trauma you went through. It was not easy by any means. You wanted to be happy and back to normal the second your home was alive again but a terrible voice in the back of your head reminded you that they could leave again. You could end up alone again.

You had nightmares nearly every night. Images of your girlfriends dead or dying plagued your unconscious mind. Maria and Natasha held you close and comforted you after every single one; They let you cry silently into their chests, not saying a word about your dreams, but silently they worried about you.

"Hey Maria?" Sharon stuck her head in the assistant director's office "can I talk to you?" Maria nodded and gestured towards the chair across from her. It was clear that Sharon was nervous by the way that she picked at the leather chair's arm.

"Listen Maria.... I don't know how to say this but when you and Nat were gone some things happened with y/n" Maria's brow immediately furrowed. You hadn't mentioned anything happening in the few months you were alone. "What kinds of things?" She questioned further.

"I'm not at liberty to say, especially not without y/n's permission....you have to ask her yourself." Sharon let out a deep breath. "But please tread carefully, she might seem okay but you and Natasha know just as well as I do that she's not." Sharon pulled herself up from her chair and patted Maria's hand before leaving the office.

TRIGGER WARNING**

"Y/n? Are you home yet?" Maria called into the apartment. "Yep I'm in the living room!" You replied.

"Hey babe" you smiled at Maria when she walked in. Natasha smiled from her spot next to you where she was sitting, a book in hand.

"Can I ask you something? About when Nat and I were gone." Maria made her way to the spot on your other side and sat down.

"Oh..." You stiffened. Shit. "Yeah of course" Natasha set her book down and turned to look at you as well.

"Sharon mentioned today that something happened in the few months that you were alone... What was it?" Maria continued.

You drew a shaky breath. It was better to just tell them than to lie. "FRIDAY can you pull up my medical records please?" You asked the robot. "Of course miss" they replied, opening the files on your tablet.

"You remember how I told you tony had installed FRIDAY in here when I was alone to check on me?" Your girlfriends nodded. "There's more to the story than just that" you whispered.

You set the tablet down on the table. "He was worried about me after I....." You gestured at the tablet.

Natasha and Maria both leaned closer to read the information on the device. "Checked into GWU hospital on April 3rd for...suicide watch?" Natasha turned to you, clearly shocked.

You hung your head in shame. "I'm sorry. I am so sorry." A tear fell from your eyes. "After you both left... I didn't cope. I fell into a hole and I didn't want to get out. I was so depressed and alone." You drew in a shaky breath. "I know it's stupid and I'm not proud to admit it but-"

Natasha pulled you into her chest. "I love you so much and I am so sorry you had to go through that. All of that"

Maria stared dumbly at the tablet. Tears were beginning to pool in her blue eyes. You turned to look at her "Maria I-"

She cut you off with a kiss. Her hands came up to stroke your cheek. "You are so strong. So unbelievably strong y/n. There is nothing in the whole fucking universe that could tear us away from you again."

Slowly things returned to normal. All three of your jackets were strewn across the house, the smell of home cooked dinner hung in the air every night, and you, Natasha and Maria fell into bed together as if no time at all had passed. Laughter rang through the halls and naps on the couch became a common place as they always had been. Some nights were spent cuddled in bed while others were spent with your legs around Maria's waist with Natasha's lips on your sensitive neck.

Life was still hectic and it always would be. Maria was still fury's second in command, Natasha was still an avenger (even if she had been taken off the front lines of duty) and you were secretary of state. But none of that mattered because everyone was home.

You laugh, opening the video. The site that hits you makes you nearly drop your phone:

WHAT IS HE DOING TO YOU. You watch it over and over for several long minutes, mesmerized. How can he do that? Be so sexy and such a goof in a matter of MILLISECONDS?! It’s not even the tongue that does it, it’s the eyes as he turns to look at the camera. Then finally, he texts you again. Shaking your head to clear it, you click over to messages:

You go back to watching the video. How is this dude single? You frown, thinking that maybe he’s NOT. The thought almost breaks your heart. WTF? Bucky is your FRIEND, you should want him to be happy and in a relationship with someone who loves him. You almost want to cry at the thought and slump down next to your bed.

You have to get it together. Your afternoon is blessedly free so yo spend about half of it going through your closet, HATING everything you own. Since you don’t even know what TYPE of club Sam has picked, you decide to play it safe with a low-cut black tank, skinny jeans that are practically painted on, and black combat boots--if you’re going to be dancing, your feet have GOT to be comfortable. At 8:45 you give yourself a final spin in the mirror, making sure you look good. You are surprisingly nervous--stomach full of butterflies and sweaty palms. What is the deal with you today? You start pacing your apartment, not wanting to be waiting down on the curb but ready to leap out the door the second they arrive.

At 8:58, Bucky texts that they are downstairs and you grab your jacket and hit the stairs. It is a 5th floor walk-up but you make it to the front door in record time. Bucky is waiting by the car, and DAMN, your heart flutters as you spot him. He’s just wearing a tight plain black tee, dark wash jeans, and the leather jacket he had on earlier in the video but, boy, does he ever make them look good.

“Dollface!” he calls to you, as you come out of the building, taking your hand and spinning you.

“Lookin’ good, Old Man!” you say, nodding at him with an eyebrow cocked.

He reaches over to open the front passenger side door for you and you pop your head in, “and this must be Sam!” you say holding out your hand.

He takes it, shaking it gregariously as you slide in beside him. Bucky closes the door and hops in the back. “I’ve heard a lot about you, the two old coots won’t shut up about how great you are--especially jackass back there,” he points to Bucky with his thumb. “Seriously though, your work is really great.”

You give him a radiant smile, “thanks, Sam, that’s always really nice to hear.” You run your hands across his dash, not a speck of dust in the whole car, “you have a GREAT car!”

“Thanks, I bought it brand new. Luckily, I have good insurance since some amnesiatic jackass totalled my last one,” he glares at Bucky in the rearview mirror.

You turn in your seat to look at him, sure this is going to be a great story, “what happened?!”

Bucky audibly groans as Sam recounts the ‘incident on the bridge’ as Steve calls it. “...and then this dude jumps on the roof, slams that stupid ass metal arm through the windshield and rips the damned steering wheel right out of the column, chucking it who knows where!” They are both laughing but you let out a little scream, turning to face Bucky.

“Fuck Bucky! did you really do that?!”

“Yeah Dollface, I’m afraid I did” he shrugs, a cocky smile on his face, “I was after Natasha and he and Steve got in the way. His car was a piece of trash anyway,” he says, winking at you and busting out laughing because this sets Sam off.

“Brandy was a great car man, you take that back!” he tries to punch Bucky in the leg but is too slow with his limited mobility while driving. “Oh you’re gonna pay for that when we get there!” You love their camaraderie, like brothers who pretend to hate each other but will throw down if anyone says the same shit they do about the other.

“About that, where ARE we going Sam?”

“Taste”

“No FUCKING way! Will DJ Baby Bok Choy be there?”

“You bet your ass he will!”

You both dissolve into a fit of laughter as Bucky asks, “wait, are those real clubs?”

“Haha just trolling you, man.” Sam says elbowing you in the side, “that’s what he gets for calling Brandy garbage. SHE WAS MY FIRST CAR, MAN!”

“Dude, I said I’m sorry like a thousand times! I’m sorry I killed your BAAABY” he puts his hands up in mock surrender.

Sam slows down and starts looking for a spot, he miraculously finds one only 2 blocks from the club. As you approach, both guys eye the huge line warily. They both obediently go to the back and you roll your eyes at them.

“What are you doing? Get up here!” they both snap to your side. “Bucky, take off your jacket and fling it over your right shoulder like you don’t care,” you push up the sleeve of his left arm a little more so the gleaming metal shines in the streetlights. “You can put it back on once we are inside if you want but right now the mission is get in there and I’ve got 2 Avengers and a low cut top so it is going to be a resounding success.” You take Bucky’s left arm and gesture for Sam to take your free arm. “Ok, follow my lead, nerds,” you give Sam’s elbow a squeeze and turn to whisper to Bucky, “are you OK with this? You can put the jacket back on and we can wait if you are uncomfortable.”

“It’s fine, Dollface, really. You’re not scared of me after hearing that car story are you?”

“Of course not, Old Man!” you lay your head on his shoulder a moment, “besides, we both know that wasn’t you, not really.” He nods.

You lead them to the bouncer, the people in line glaring at you agitatedly, “you got room for a couple of VIPs?” you ask him your hand caressing Bucky’s gleaming bicep.

“Get back in the line, lady. You ain’t got no idea how many dumbasses show up trying to say they are an Avenger.”

“Ah, but look at these two, they are the real deal man!” you stroke Bucky’s metal arm. “Besides, look at them phones,” you gesture at the line, almost everyone has noticed Bucky’s and are furiously snapping pics, video, and tweets. “You let us in and you’re gonna have the biggest night of the year. You don’t? Well, let’s just say there are a lotta clubs in the New York.” He glares at you for a beat then reaches down, opening the velvet rope.

“YES! Mission accomplished boys! Lets party!” you make a beeline for the bar, ordering a long island and two Yuenglings for the guys. You tell the bartender to keep a tab open and head back to Sam & Bucky, who have snagged a hi-top table. You take off your jacket, stashing it underneath. Bucky has put his leather coat back on, raising the collar slightly.

The music is bumping, the perfect blend of Trance, Hip Hop, and Pop remixes to keep the crowd happy and on their feet. Sam sees you wiggling your hips to the beat as you sip your drink and offers you his hand. You down the rest in one long pull and take it, noticing he gives Bucky a smug look as you head out to the floor.

Sam is a great dancer, fun with just the right amount of flirty to make you feel great. After a few songs, a girl catches his eye and you push him over toward her, saying in his ear, “I’m gonna go check on the Old Man.” He nods and gives you a wink and then slaps your ass as you walk away. You turn back, mock scandalized and flip him the bird.

You pick up another drink at the bar and head back to the table where Bucky is still standing, head bobbing along to the music. “What up, Buck?”

“Remember when I said I had been to a club?” you nod, “I never said I went DANCING in one!” You let out a huge burst of laughter.

“Oh, sorry!” his face looks like a kicked puppy, “Oh! No! No, honey,” you take his hand, giving it a reassuring squeeze, “you are a GREAT dancer, you definitely have the moves! Just come out there and follow my lead!” you give his hand a tug and he follows you over near Sam and the new girl.

It is a real bouncy song and you just pull bucky’s hands into the air and start jumping like a maniac to the beat. He had NOTHING to be worried about--he has a natural grace and rhythm that makes you ache to touch him.

Woah, you shake your head, nope! Bucky is your friend. You need another drink so you flag down a waitress circling with dollar shots and grab 2 of them, downing them in quick succession. Several songs come and go but all you see is him.

You grab Bucky’s hand as “Ready or Not” by the Fugees, you place his hands on your hips and yours on his shoulders as you draw circles with your pelvis. He matches your rhythm and it is like you had done this thousands of times, perfectly in sync. At the end of the song you spot the waitress with the shots again and get two more.

When you turn back to Bucky, you notice he has taken his jacket of and stashed it with yours at the hi-top table--now occupied by new people, who look a little star struck as he walk-jogs back to you. You almost drop the drinks in your hands, the combination of his tight shirt, metal arm, and sweat glistening on his bicep literally takes your breath away.

“Fuuuuuck,” you whisper to yourself. You swallow thickly and down the 2 drinks. He does this little shimmy and sticks his tongue out again like he did in the video and you feel your knees going weak. He grabs you, his metal arm cradling the small of your back and you practically melt.

“No more alcohol for you, Dollface” he says, mouth pressed up to your ear, as he pulls you close to him and rocks you back and forth to the beat. You can feel his breath on your neck and he smells so good you. You throw an arm around his neck and the other back for balance and you again begin to move your hips against his.

The song changes to “Guys my age” by Hey Violet and you lean back with a groan, knowing you are in trouble but not caring. This song just does something to your body and with it being HIM you are dancing with, you just can’t help yourself. You begin to writhe languidly. He shifts his grip on your back and runs his left hand down your hip to your ass, pulling you closer. You lift that leg slightly and he hikes it up onto his hip, steadying you with the strength of his metal arm. The chorus comes on you can’t help but stare into his eyes as you sing along,

“Guys my age don't know how to treat me Don't know how to treat me, don't know how to treat me Guys my age don't know how to touch me Don't know how to love me good Guys my age don't know how to keep me Don't know how to keep me, don't know how to keep me Guys my age don't know how to touch me Don't know how to love me good…”

He gazes back at you, his tongue coming out to moisten his lips. He moves his hand higher up your back, pressing your chests together. You throw your head back and grind your pelvis against his hip, exhilarated by the contact. The chorus comes back and you pull your attention back to his face, he is biting his lip and all you want to do is kiss him. You place your hands on either side of his face, rubbing his bottom lip with your thumb. You lick your lips, and move your face closer to his.

Suddenly the song is over and the beat changes completely--you almost feel like you have been punched in the chest. You are both breathing heavily, almost panting, as Bucky releases your leg and loosens his grip on your back. You step back from him and gesture to the restrooms. He nods and turns, eyeing the crowd for Sam.

You bust into the bathroom like a bat outta hell and grip one of the sinks. WHAT DID YOU ALMOST JUST DO?! You stare in the mirror, silently chastising yourself for getting out of hand like that. You finally splash a little water on your face and head back out.

Bucky is waiting, holding both jackets. “Sam went to get the car,” he says, helping you into your jacket and slipping into his own. He grabs your hand and leads your to the entrance where Sam is already waiting.

“Sam!!” You say as you hop into the car, “you get that girl’s number, man?”

He holds up his phone, shaking it, “you know I did!”

“Ayyy , that’s my boy!” you say shooting him finger guns. It feels so good to sit down. Maybe it was the right call to leave now, you haven’t drank like that in years. You lay your head back against headrest and close your eyes.

steve starts with a bashful smile, holding your face delicately between his hands. "one kiss for each year," he whispers, his breath warm against your skin. his lips ghost over your forehead first, soft and loving, before moving down to place a gentle peck on your temple. each kiss carries a soft reverence, his voice counting them quietly against your skin.

by the time he's halfway through, the atmosphere has shifted. his kisses linger longer, his lips pressing more firmly. he moves to your cheeks, your jawline, and finally your lips, the number barely audible now as he deepens each kiss.

he breathes the next number against your mouth, his voice lower and his eyes dark with a need he's trying to contain. the kisses grow hungrier, his hands sliding down to your waist, pulling you flush against him. you're gasping by the time he reaches your neck, his lips leaving a heated trail that makes your head tilt back.

the teasing count fades into moans and whispers of your name as he presses you against the nearest surface. his lips and hands seem everywhere at once, worshiping your body as if you're the most precious gift he's ever held. you're trembling under his touch, your senses overwhelmed by his increasing fervor.

he pauses for a moment, his forehead resting against yours as he pants softly, his pupils blown.

"happy birthday, baby." he murmurs before kissing you with such intensity it leaves you breathless.

steve's lips work their way down from your jaw again, leaving open-mouthed kisses that feel hotter with every second. by the time his hands grip your hips, his soft, tender demeanor has morphed into something almost primal. he's tugging you closer, his breath hot against your neck as he groans softly, "i know this was supposed to be all about you, but…" his hands slip under the hem of your shirt, fingertips grazing your bare skin as he kisses his way back to your lips, “i just cant stop thinking about how much i want you.” this time, there's nothing slow about it. his mouth moves hungrily against yours, his tongue sweeping past your lips, claiming every inch with a need that makes your legs weak.

he lifts you effortlessly, setting you on the edge of the nearest surface. your thighs spread instinctively as he steps between them, the heat of his body pressing into yours. his hips grind forward just enough for you to feel him, and the sensation pulls a gasp from your lips.

"you have no idea what you do to me," he murmurs, his voice husky and thick with desire. one of his hands slides up to cup your breast, his thumb teasing the sensitive peak through your shirt. the heat of his palms contrasts with the cool air, making you arch into his touch. his lips crash back to yours, hot and hungry, his tongue slipping past your lips to tangle with yours. the kiss grows wetter, messier, his quiet moans mingling with your gasps as his hands grip your waist, grinding you against him.

"god, you're so perfect," he groans, his voice barely above a whisper as he presses you firmly against the wall. his thigh slides between your legs, and the friction makes you whimper, your hands clutching at his shoulders for support. he takes the sound as encouragement, his lips working down to your collarbone while his hands slide beneath the waistband of your pants. his fingers tease, brushing over your heated skin but not giving you what you desperately need just yet.

"steve," you plead, your voice shaky and needy, and that's all it takes for his restraint to fully snap. his fingers find you, stroking with maddening precision, his touch firm yet gentle as he watches your every reaction.

the other trails down your thigh, gripping the back of your knee to hitch your leg around his waist, pressing you closer against him.

when his lips move down to your neck, his teeth graze your skin before soothing it with his tongue, leaving a trail of warmth that has your head falling back.

the moment he touches you, you gasp his name, the sound driving him wild. his fingers move with expert precision, teasing and circling until you're trembling beneath him, your body arching into his touch.

"that’s it," he groans, his lips brushing against your ear as he works you closer and closer to the edge. his free hand grips your hip, holding you steady as your legs threaten to give out, the pleasure building into something all-consuming.

when you finally break, it's intense- your body shuddering against him as you cry out his name. he doesn't stop, drawing out every wave of your release until you're trembling, boneless in his arms. he pulls you close, pressing soft, reverent kisses to your temple, your cheeks, your lips, murmuring sweet nothings as you come down from the high.

"you’re incredible, baby." he says softly, his forehead pressed against yours as he catches his breath, his gaze full of affection and awe. "happy birthday."

Quick Bits:

Amazing Spider-Man Annual #1 gives us an “untold tale” of Spider-Man shortly after Secret Wars while he still had the black costume from Saladin Ahmed, Gerry Brown, Lee Loughridge, and Joe Caramagna. It’s a nice bit of embellishment, giving us a look more at the reactions from the people around Peter and what the Venom symbiote was doing while he slept. The dark, moody art from Brown and Loughridge is perfect for this.

Avengers #8 is a bit of a housekeeping issue from Jason Aaron, taking stock of what’s changed for this new incarnation of the team, putting together the status of the various members, and setting up the new status quo. It’s nice to see David Marquez and Justin Ponsor aboard for this arc, continuing the very high bar this volume is setting for art.

Black Hammer: Age of Doom #5 answers all of the questions, with Jeff Lemire and Dean Ormston filling in all of the details in Lucy’s quest to find the missing heroes. It’s an interesting, and satisfying, revelation that sets up an even bigger picture and possible looming threat.

Bloodborne #5 begins a new arc, returning to the city, and focusing on a scientific and religious inquiry into the nature of the affliction besetting the world. Wonderful art from Piotr Kowalski and Brad Simpson.

Burnouts #1 isn’t a bad start from Dennis Culver, Geoffo, Dave Dwonch, and Lauren Perry, riffing on the teen alien invasion vibe of things like The Faculty. The premise of needing to be high or otherwise intoxicated to see the true threat is an interesting one, leaving an obvious out as to whether or not it’s real, but this issue largely takes it at face value.

Captain America Annual #1 is very well done. Tini Howard, Chris Sprouse, Ron Lim, Karl Story, Walden Wong, Scott Hanna, Jesus Aburtov, Erick Arciniega, Israel Silva, and Joe Caramagna give us a story set deep into World War 2 of Cap and Bucky behind German lines, helping a group of civilians who escaped from Stutthof.

Death or Glory #5 sets fire to Glory’s life quite literally. This entire series so far has been damned good, moving at a breakneck pace pushing the characters harder and further with each subsequent issue. Rick Remender, Bengal, and Rus Wooton continue to deliver.

Dick Tracy: Dead or Alive #1 is a curious thing, embracing the odd stylistic choices of Chester Gould’s characters with Rich Tommaso and Mike Allred’s art, and the kind of throwback tone of Lee & Mike Allred’s script, but through the use of a cellphone it doesn’t seem to be a period piece. Still, it’s an entertaining beginning to this mini.

Ether: The Copper Golems #5 is the bittersweet end to this mini, setting up a new problem for Boone and co. to face in the third series, but in doing so putting him in an even more tragic situation, both in the present and in the flashback back-up. Matt Kindt & David Rubín have bottled magic with this series and I can’t recommend it highly enough.

GI Joe: A Real American Hero - Silent Option #1 begins a new limited series following Bombstrike and her team’s investigation of the missing Helix. It’s a bit bloodier and more brutal than the mothership series, but given the subject of human trafficking, it’s kind of understandable. Larry Hama, Netho Diaz, Alisson Rodrigues, Jagdish Kumar, Vinicius Townsend, and Neil Uyetake put together a decent start here. There’s also a great back-up filling us in on Helix’s past from Ryan Ferrier & Kenneth Loh.

Hack/Slash: Resurrection #11 is the conclusion to the “Return to Haverhill” arc and it continues with the usual offbeat humour that Tini Howard has brought to the title. Mixing the horror with wacky hijinks.

Ice Cream Man #7 might be one of the more horrifying issues of the series, telling the tale of a young girl coming to terms with the death of her best friend. That story alone is enough to pick up the issue, but it also brings back more of the ongoing story of the Ice Cream Man’s trials as well, giving us a bit more interconnectivity of what are otherwise mostly standalone tales.

Immortal Hulk #6 sees Al Ewing working to put the disparate pieces of the run so far together, along with revealing at least one group of antagonists dogging Banner’s heels, and working Hulk back into the broader world of the Marvel Universe to deal with the ramifications that have been hovering since Civil War 2. Surprisingly, none of it is particularly confusing, which is a testament to how Ewing is laying this out. Also, really nice guest art from Lee Garbett (with colours from Paul Mounts).

Impossible Incorporated #1 is a new all ages mini from JM DeMatteis and Mike Cavallaro. I have fond memories of their previous collaboration The Life & Times of Savior 28, so came into this with some fairly high expectations. They were exceeded. The premise for this series taps into the same family of adventurers dynamic of the Fantastic Four and Challengers of the Unknown, and it yields some interesting characters, weird landscapes, and phenomenal art.

Infinity Wars: Soldier Supreme #1 is the first of these Infinity Warps tie-in minis to the overarching Infinity Wars saga, blending together two of Marvel’s heroes in this new reality. In this case, Captain America and Doctor Strange. I’m not sure how much impact these will ultimately have on the event, but it’s a fun diversion. Gerry Duggan, Adam Kubert, Matthew Wilson, and Clayton Cowles deliver an entertaining beginning to this story, laying out Stephen Rogers’ origin and showcasing a number of other amalgamated heroes and a rather interesting villain. Kubert and Wilson’s art is definitely more than worth the price of admission.

The Life of Captain Marvel #3 delivers more heartfelt and strange complications for Carol Danvers. I’m really enjoying the drama that Margaret Stohl is creating in this series, it’s really been injecting a real element of humanity in Carol that’s been missing for years.

Mr. & Mrs. X #3 gives us an explanation for the egg that everybody and their bird-brained aunt are fighting over. This development is definitely very interesting for the cosmic side of things.

Olivia Twist #1 is an updating of Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist, gender-bent and worked into the future, by Darin Strauss, Adam Dalva, Emma Vieceli, Lee Loughridge, and Sal Cipriano. The premise works quite well adapted to a dystopian future, with the protections of society broken down and oppression at an all time high. Although this is set in a future Britain, it’s easy to see similar conditions in America today. What really brings the book together is the artwork from Vieceli and Loughridge.

Patience! Conviction! Revenge! #1 is the beginning to what looks to be another beautiful sci-fi epic, starting out with a bit of a western feel, before moving on to the city. I quite like the voice that Patrick Kindlon gives to the protagonist, Renny, as he doesn’t seem to shut up. Also, the artwork from Marco Ferrari and Patrizia Comino is wonderful. Ferrari has a style that reminds me of Sean Gordon Murphy and Devmalya Pramanik and it perfectly suits a lived-in future.

Return of Wolverine #1 is not a terrible comic. In fact the artwork from Steve McNiven, Jay Leisten, and Laura Martin is very, very good. McNiven seems to be channelling Barry Windsor-Smith for the artwork and it’s perfect. The action and page compositions are wonderful. I can also say that the story, dialogue and such, from Charles Soule is not bad. I’m not sure if I like the implied idea of pulling Wolverine’s history from him, putting the memory genie back in the bottle when we already know his Origin, is a good idea, but his issues with Persephone and Soteira are at least interesting.

What ruins this comic, however, like the Hunt for Wolverine: Dead Ends issue, is that it renders the entire Hunt for Wolverine event superfluous. It doesn’t respect the readers’ time or money, showing that Hunt for Wolverine didn’t build to anything. There’s absolutely nothing in this comic that necessitates having read anything before it. That’s good for new readers, but it’s a crappy ploy from Marvel that manufactured an empty event that seems like its sole purpose was to bilk the customer. I feel terrible saying that, since for the most part the mini-series weren’t bad in isolation, but as a whole, it just seems like a marketing stunt. When it comes to a character like Wolverine, who has previously been associated with the idea of market oversaturation, it’s just worse.

From Marvel Legacy through to now, it doesn’t feel like there’s been any guiding hand. It doesn’t feel like there’s been any coherence between any of the appearances. It just feels like Marvel turning to some of their worst tendencies in making this past year or so a marketing ploy, tarnishing something that possibly could have been special, and ruining the return of Wolverine. Wolverine’s still dead, Marvel’s just pimping a corpse.

Seven to Eternity #11 checks in on Adam’s family at the farm while he’s hanging around with the Mud King. Like every issue, beautiful, stunning artwork from Jerome Opeña and Matt Hollingsworth, somehow outdoing themselves with the brilliant colour schemes and impressive character designs. Also, I love the biting, almost subtle, humour that Rick Remender employs for the Mud King’s dialogue.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #86 begins the Earth Protection Force’s assault on Burnow Island, the new home to the Triceratons and Utroms. The action depicted by a returning Dave Wachter (with colours by Ronda Pattison) is very nice, even as we get some interesting moral and ethical hemming and hawing from both the Turtles and Burnow’s defenders as they choose whether or not to release their war criminals to help fight against the EPF. This feels like the beginning of something very heavy.

Thor #5 resumes the King Thor story from the first issue, in the far-flung future, with a reunion between Thor and Logan. It’s not quite as bonkers a story from Jason Aaron as the opening Niffleheim arc, but it’s certainly up there. I almost get the impression that Aaron and Donny Cates are seeing how far they push the cosmic envelope at Marvel right now, between their respective series. In any event, it’s led to some great storytelling. Especially when you add guest artist Christian Ward, who just makes this a must buy.

Venom #6 is a not-so-subtle reminder that the art team of Ryan Stegman, JP Mayer, Frank Martin, and Clayton Cowles are absolute beasts. Every issue of this series has been impeccably crafted so far and I swear that this one ups the ante. Gorgeous work from the team.

West Coast Avengers #2 is more ridiculous fun. If you liked the first issue, this is more of that, with some even more over-the-top shenanigans with the team, as they try to get to the bottom of BRODOK. Kelly Thompson’s dialogue and humour here are a highlight, reminding me of some of best of Keith Giffen and JM DeMatteis’ work on the bwahaha era of the Justice League. A book that doesn’t take itself too seriously is a nice balm these days. Also, gorgeous artwork again from Stefano Caselli and Tríona Farrell.

Took my brand new tackle box and assortment of lures to the lake this morning to try and catch some fish. I had a blast. I landed a bunch and missed another bunch. Having barbless hooks mean fish can escape easier and it takes more skill and patience to get them in the boat.

Thanks to long time customer and friend Doug Stafford for lending his copies of this Marvel event for me to read. I didn't read them as they hit the racks because I was tired of these big multi-crossover stories that ultimately don't mean much. I realised as soon as I found out that evil Captain America was created by a sentient Cosmic Cube named Kobik, who appears as a little girl, that everything would be back to "normal" at the end and I was right. I've read a lot of good versus evil stories and I needed something different to keep me engaged and there wasn't much here that did that. Yes, I read the whole thing but that's the completist in me. I cannot put aside something that I start without finishing it and so I stuck with this to find out how evil Steve was defeated. My favourite character was Ant-Man and I think I would enjoy a solo Ant-Man book written by Nick Spencer. The art in issue #1 was nice but it looked like Steve McNiven (pencils) and Jay Leisten (inks) were tired doing issue #10. The in between issues had art that varied from acceptable to hard on my eyes. This is worth reading if you like to spot Marvel heroes and villains but otherwise it's not that important in the grand scheme of things in the Marvel U.

Champions #12 - Mark Waid (writer) Humberto Ramos (pencils) Victor Olazaba (inks) Edgar Delgado (colours) VC's Clayton Cowles (letters). This is a good old fashioned super heroes versus super villain fight as Psycho-Man pays a visit from the Microverse. He's got a simple power so there's no need to explain everything about him to new fans who have never heard of the Micronauts. What Mark does to make these stories far more interesting is how he lets us see these heroes interact as friends and team mates. I love this young heroes book.

Jessica Jones #12 - Brian Michael Bendis (writer) Michael Gaydos & Javier Pulido (art) Matt Hollingsworth & Javier Pulido (colours) VC's Clayton Cowles (letters). Jessica closes the case for Maria Hill and the person who put out the hit on Maria is revealed. It's not just good enough to find out who the bad guy is but Brian lets us in on why Maria was targeted and it's a really good twist. The on deck villain will make the next story arc super tense.

Generations: Iron Man & Ironheart #1 - Brian Michael Bendis (writer) Marco Rudy, Szymon Kudranski & Nico Leon (pencils) Szymon Kudranski, Will Sliney, Scott Koblish & Nico Leon (inks) Marco Rudy, Dean White & Paul Mounts (colours) VC's Clayton Cowles (letters). It's Riri Williams' turn to have an adventure with her progenitor to warm up potential new fans for her comic book. There are teasers in this story that may sway fans to give the Invincible Iron Man series a try. The stable of artists used in this one shot may not appeal to some but the writing is solid.

Dastardly & Muttley #1 - Garth Ennis (writer) Mauricet (art) John Kalisz (colours) Rob Steen (letters). The art in this new 6-issue mini is really good for this updated comic book adaptation of an old Hanna-Barbera Saturday morning cartoon show. I bet you a lot of folks will not have a clue about the two aviators and I barely twigged to the title until I started reading. I can still hear Muttley's muffled laugh in my head but here he has a voice. It's nice to see Garth's humorous side back on the racks in a book that isn't only for mature readers. If you liked the Flintstones comic book, you'll like this too.

Kingsman: The Red Diamond #1 - Rob Williams (writer) Simon Fraser (art) Gary Caldwell (colours) Peter Doherty (letters). There's a new Kingsman movie coming out later this month and this new 6-issue mini should get you primed for it. We are introduced to Eggsy, the young British super spy and the new villain the Red Diamond. I liked the recent Nick Fury mini and this one is just as good. Pick it up for some over the top escapism.

Star Wars: Captain Phasma #1 - Kelly Thompson (writer) Marco Checchetto (art) Andres Mossa (colours) VC's Clayton Cowles (letters). I don't get why this Storm Trooper is getting a 4-issue mini since she was only in The Force Awakens briefly. Maybe there's more to her story and they'll reveal it here before The Last Jedi hits the screens. I'm not a big fan of faceless characters, Darth Vader notwithstanding, and her chasing a traitor to the Empire isn't enough to keep me reading, but I'm sure true blue Star Wars fans will like this a lot.

Batman #30 - Tom King (writer) Clay Mann (pencils) Seth Mann (inks) Jordie Bellaire (colours) Clayton Cowles (letters). It's part 2 of "The Ballad of Kite Man". It's a really depressing song but it shows us how "The War of Jokes and Riddles" is going.

Lark's Killer #2 - Bill Willingham (writer) Mark Dos Santos (art) Salvatore Aiala (colours) Thomas Mauer (letters). I don't need Bill's plea to spread the word to old Fables fans to buy his new book because I like it so much I would gladly recommend it to anyone. It's a cool mix of modern and medieval. Lark provides the modern and the land of Hyperborea is the sword and sorcery setting. Please give this a try.

Spider-Man/Deadpool #21 - Elliott Kalan (writer) Todd Nauck (art) Rachelle Rosenberg (colours) VC's Joe Sabino (letters). Here we go again with a Murderworld story as Spidey and Deadpool try to outsmart Arcade and not get killed. Elektra managed to beat the bad guy and I know these buddies will too. It's fun to see what kind of death traps creative teams come up with.

Superman #30 - Keith Champagne (writer) Ed Benes, Tyler Kirkman & Philip Tan (art) Danei Ribeiro, Tomeu Morey & Sunny Gho (colours) Rob Leigh (letters). The 2-parter with Sinestro and Parallax concludes with the bad guys losing once again. This one had a nice message to it.

I didn't know what a Kyber crystal was until now. There's a very well done sequence that made me think that Vader's path was going to change course, but alas it was not to be. An interesting premise though.

Spider-Man #20 - Brian Michael Bendis (writer) Nico Leon (art) Justin Ponsor (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). We got a new regular customer at Comet Comics who is a big Miles Morales fan and the two of us geek out over how much we love reading this title when he comes in to pick up the latest issue off the racks. That infectious joy is why I love my job. Miles makes a big life change starting this issue and lands in hot water right from the get go. This book is never boring.
