i will never ever be over the thematic dance between hiccup and viggo. because like

they're both incredibly clever strategists, but hiccup is playing with the handicap of the fact that he wants everyone to make it out alive; viggo is ruthless and doesn't try. viggo, closer to the end of the series, starts to get the idea, but even though hiccup never loses that sense of morality....the guy isn't stupid. he knows that this would go so much smoother for him if he could afford to use people like that.

another example? honor. hiccup doesn't kill (well, sinking ships in the middle of the ocean leads to deaths, but at that point he can't really avoid it without ruining his own fight), especially not in cold blood. he's a very honorable guy! but for all that viggo is a businessman, and a killer, etc...he's not without honor either. if i remember correctly, he doesn't go back on his word (i think we see this in the buffalord episode? but it's been a while since we watched rtte and i forget), and when a monstrous nightmare saved his life, he honored that life debt and stopped hunting dragons.

and the thing that made me make this post in the first place—the flaming sword.

hiccup made that sword; the first iteration, with that jagged blade. it breaks in the ice, and you see in movie two that he's now got a sword that's less for cutting and more for hooking blades out of opponents' hands; it's hollow. and this is one spot where he didn't invent the weapon he uses, not all the way.

viggo made his own fire sword, modeled after the one hiccup made, but with one key difference; it's fucking hollow.

that sword you see in movie two, it's based off viggo's sword, which was based off hiccup's sword. it's recursive, almost, and would've been more so if we ever saw the guy again. they learned from each other; time and time again, like,,, the picture in my head is two (regular, lol) swords clashing. if not for the fact that beating drago was a full-out assault kinda thing, instead of a months-long struggle to pin down hunters and disable their operations, i am sure we would've seen hiccup using strategies he learned from viggo.

also, one other thing, because i will never ever stop being feral about this?

i'm pretty sure if you lined up toothless's paw with the scars on viggo's neck, it'd be a pretty damn good match.

VERY IMPORTANT a dam in the Netherlands, the weerdsluis lock, is directly on a migratory path for spawning fish. They have a worker stationed there to open the door for the fish, but they can take a while to open it. So to keep the fish from getting preyed on by birds they installed a doorbell. Only, the fish don't have hands to ring the doorbell. If you go to their website, they have a LIVE CAMERA AND A DOORBELL that YOU RING FOR THE FISH when they're waiting, and then the dam worker opens the door for them! I can't express how obsessed I am with this. look at this shit. oh my god.

Please check on the fish doorbell once in a while :)
