My friend got into her feels about Heartstopper. Watching the show left her with regret for what she didn't get as a queer kid. Heartstopper had her thinking about what could have been despite living in a world where it never would have been.
I spoke with her about this, and we discussed how nostalgia, even for what never was, often looks at life through rose-tinted glasses. She was searching for an ideal world that never existed, doesn't currently exist, and will likely never exist. The world of Heartstopper is entirely fictional. Nick and Charlie are far more emotionally intelligent than the average person in part because the genre and the progression of the story's plot necessitate them working through complex emotions. Young queer love doesn't usually look like what Nick and Charlie have. It's messy and awkward in a way Nick and Charlie never will be because Nick and Charlie's romance is fantasy. Real life isn't nearly as fair or kind to us. Real-life people aren't afforded the same comfort, safety, acceptance, or space these kids in this fictional show are.
And that's the saddest part about the show. The way it contrasts with reality is the most painful part.
She got choked up and, through her tears, told me that she does not even want a relationship right now, but still feels this almost intangible grief which she attributed to not having had a (romantic) relationship like those portrayed in the show. I mentioned that what she's grieving maybe isn't romance, but the lack of a robust support system. I told her that she may need a more diverse friend group full of people who can meet her emotional needs more frequently (more frequently than me). "We work together now, and that changed our dynamics. We don't meet to discuss what we did like we used to. You may be feeling like your relationships; your friendships, specifically, are unfulfilling, and may need to find more friends or build more robust community with a diversity of people." I told her that our emotional needs won't always be met in the way we need when we communicate that need, especially if our support systems are fragile or small, and that being able to reach out to lots of different people for support- a primary theme of the show- is beneficial.
There is an epidemic of loneliness among our youth, and many are throwing themselves at or pressuring themselves into romance to alleviate that pain and this feeling of a void. We often discuss building community, but now how or even if people have access to the space and tools to build that community. We often discuss the need for emotional maturity and conflict resolution but not how to achieve it so that community does not dissolve at the slightest sign of discordance. And that's why unrealistic- nearly idealistic- shows like Heartstopper can be so important for young people, namely teens. The characters don't just model representation but also emotional maturity, conflict resolution, self-care, and how to support friends and loved ones when they are most in need. The show models empathy; an empathy so many are campaigning to counteract through the demolition of DEI and SEL initiatives.
I also feel people are focusing so much on regret for a childhood entirely out of their control that they forget the messages of this show. The show is about creating a kinder and fairer world. It's about making the space for people to explore identity and be themselves. It's about having patience with yourself. It's about the hard work that goes into creating sturdy support systems and communities. It's about taking your time to learn and grow. It's about overcoming adversity. It's about acceptance. It's about how you don't owe anyone anything. You don't owe them a performance. You don't owe them the personal details of your life. And you don't owe them a justification for who you are.
And it's about how there's no timeline. Life has no timeline. Romance has no timeline. Coming out has no timeline. Aging has no timeline.
"Probably a bit late for me to have any youthful moments of discovery." "Don't think there's an age limit on those, to be honest."
Don't grieve something that never died.

Why the rugby lads where not at Nick's birthday party - Heartstopper Season 3
I''ve seen people question why Charlie invited "his" friend group to Nick's birthday party and not the rugby lads, despite them being Nick's friends and Charlie being cool with them.
Firstly, the Paris Squad is both of their friend group.
In season 1, it's Nick the one that gets closer to Tara and Darcy. Charlie befriends them when they go cheer him at his first rugby match, but Nick is the one that opens up to them and gets to know both as the three get vulnerable and talk about their past. (That's not to say Charlie isn't close with Tara and Darcy, because Charlie has had his moments with both later down the road.)
Imogen started out as Nick's friend. She joined the group because of the sleepover in season 2 and the friend group saw the real Imogen, compared to the facade she puts on to fit in with the "cool" kids. (Hence why Tara, Darcy and Elle weren't really cool with her in season 1.)
Tara in particular is Nick's safe space second to Charlie. He confides in her, is the one that talks stuff about Charlie before taking action with him, and is the one that helps pick back up Nick when he feels down. (Something he doesn't do with Charlie, since he wants to be the one that picks Charlie back up and he can't afford to be down in front of him to be ready for Charlie whenever he needs it.)
And while Tao, Isaac and Elle come directly from Charlie's friend group, he grew a bond with each one of them and isn't just friends with them because "they are his boyfriend's friends.". Tao and Nick particularly, have a beautiful friendship, very similar to Nick and Tori's.
(All of this applies to Charlie as well. He befriended Imogen and developed their own bond and is not just friends with her just because it's his boyfriend's friend, but that's not the main thing here.)
And secondly, the reason the rugby lads aren't there is because Nick still cannot be his authentic self with them. Not because they wouldn't accept the real version of Nick, but it's because of Nick's anxietys. Similar to Imogen, he still feels the need to put on the mask of this tough guy. They don't know half of Nick's personal issues, whether it be his sexuality, identity or even the non-queer issues like his complicated relationship with his dad. He may appear confident on the outside, (And while he still is.), he is still full of insecurities but cannot let his guard down due to the fear of what could happen.
In the end, Charlie wanted Nick to feel safe and at ease on his birthday. He wanted "the perfect day for him" so he invited the Paris Squad, the only people where he can let his guard down and feel supported whenever his anxiety gets the best of him, which unfortunately is something the rugby lads, despite knowing Nick for longer, don't let him do.
I'm sure that in an alternate timeline, where Nick is fully open with them, Charlie invites the rugby lads to the birthday party. Because while the friend groups could clash and it be somewhat awkward, Charlie would be the bridge between them, since they are pretty friendly towards him. Also, except for Isaac RIP, they were all coupled up so they were in their own worlds. 🍂

Okay so we've established that all ships have that one artist whose songs are perfectly made for them
So here are my favorite ships and their artist:
Narlie (Nick Nelson + Charlie Spring): One Direction, and I know this one seems like kind of a stretch but hear me out. "Perfect", "What Makes You Beautiful", "Night Changes", and "They Don't Know About Us" fit their relationship so much. Or even like just Harry Styles, because "Late Night Talking" is literally these two wonderful idiots.
Wolfstar (Sirius Black + Remus Lupin): Conan Gray. You can't tell me that "Family Line", "Heather", and "Astronomy" are all not Sirius Black just singing to his werewolf boyfriend. Or that "Best Friend" and "Wish You Were Sober" aren't Remus Lupin coded?!
Byler (Will Byers + Mike Wheeler): My girl, my queen, Olivia Rodrigo. "Happier"? "Good 4 U"? "Traitor"? "Jealousy, Jealousy"? "Lacy"? "Drivers Lisense"? Want to know what all of these songs have in common? They were all written, sung, and produced by William J. Byers.
Steddie (Steve Harrington + Eddie Munson): Taylor Swift, of course! "Wildest Dreams", "Style", "Midnight Rain" "You Belong With Me", "Blank Space", and "Love Story" are all just songs that Taylor wrote specifically for Eddie and Steve.
Jegulus/Starchaser (James Potter + Regulus Black): She is such an icon that she is on this list twice, but once again Taylor Swift. If you try and convince me that James is not in fact the physical embodiment of the whole Lover album, or that Reggie isn't just Reputation in a trench coat, fedora, and sunglasses, then you are just plain wrong.
Ronance (Robin Buckley + Nancy Wheeler): Girl In Red. Do I even need to explain?
Elmax (Eleven Hopper + Max Mayfield): For them I would have to say Katy Perry. "Dark Horse", "Teenage Dream", "Last Friday Night", "I Kissed A Girl", "California Gurls", and "E.T" all scream Elmax to me.
Drarry (Draco Malfoy + Harry Potter): Definetly Ariana Grande. You just know that Draco knows every single word to "7 Rings" and will jump onto a table and belt it out if it comes on at a party. Let's also not forget "Into You", "POV", "34+35", "Positions", "Side to Side", and "Break Up With Your Girlfriend" are all just so Drarry coded.

HEARTSTOPPER SEASON 3 SPOILERS 🚨🚨
also tw for all of the sensitive topics this season covered
okay i watched all of heartstopper yesterday and i have thoughts
my first thought is that it was absolutely heartbreaking and nearly made me full on sob on too many occasions
the way they handled charlie's ed and nicks support of that was really good. it was done in a way that was respectful but didn't sugarcoat it. like it was realistic and not just disrespectful to people who have gone through that
one thing i did find was that the pacing was a bit weird. i think everything moved too fast. it might just be because i binged it all in one go but i found that they needed more episodes to fit everything in. there were so many storylines that got pushed to the side that i think deserved more attention. imogen definitely deserved way more screen time and more attention to her discovery story. i know they had the conversations with sahar in the tent and at new years but i found the conversation between her and nick in the hotel room wasn't very impactful. darcy definitely needed explaining better. i felt it was kind of like if you weren't paying attention full attention you wouldn't know that they hadn't gone back to they're mum, or even that they were non binary. the storyline of her abusive household was setup so much in season 2 and not really payed much attention to in season 3.
i think tori's character was perfect this season. you as the audience can tell she's definitely not okay but the people in her life don't pick up on it, which is exactly what her life is like for most of solitare. and the fact that you can tell charlie is her BEST friend but she isn't charlie's best friend. charlie's found his people for life but apart from michael towards the end, she has no one apart from charlie.
i'm not gonna lie i was disappointed by the fight. i wanted to properly see it because as charlie said that argument made them closer but to us it's like that new connection just magically happened because we didn't really see the fight. and because they're relationship so far has been positive it needed a more realistic lens and that fight being bigger really would've done that i think.
ive literally got so many thoughts it's gonna take me years to type them all out so ill do another post at some point. i'm gonna rewatch the whole thing slower and see if i still think it progresses too fast.
overall i genuinly LOVED this season so much and found it so heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time. episode four and five were my favourites i think. i'm also the same age as charlie and most of my best friends are a year above me so it hit very close to home in that aspect. my school doesn't even have a sixth form so they all left me to SUFFER on my own it's not okay. anyway that is not what this post is about i loved heartstopper guys
edit: I COMPLETELY FORGOT ABOUT ISAAC
i really love how him and charlie's friendship has developed and his coming out moment was really beautiful. i've literally never seen aro/ace representation in anything so it was really nice to see. it felt like last season he was barely part of the group and him finally talking about how he felt so left out was really powerful

Nick is not "too dependent" on Charlie, he had a great life before he met him, unlike Charlie. The reason he is "obsessed" with his boyfriend is that he's the perfect wish fulfillment fantasy, not only is he way out of the league of the self-insert character, he needs to be more into him(You) than vice versa lol. Classic fanfic trope.
I'm kind of sick of people misunderstanding Nick as a character so I'll just leave this here
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
heartstopper isn't for you to be a part of it. unlike the rest of Alice's books, heartstopper allows you to have your own POV, you're not on any of the characters minds and you're not involved in the story at all.
Nick IS dependent on Charlie, he was literally depressed those two weeks they broke up (he wasn't doing anything literally, not showering, crying himself to sleep and barely going out). He's scared about leaving for university because he doesn't think he can exist without Charlie (there are more things that prove this but they're patreon updates so I won't share them).
His life wasn't "great" before he met Charlie, he was practically on "automatic mode" pretending to be someone he isn't to fit in and repressing his real personality and thoughts; he had a monologue in the show and a couple of pages on the comic where he proves this. He was pretending to be someone he wasn't! he said so himself multiple times.
There are also many times this is proven, like when Sarah tells him "he acts much more like himself around Charlie", the change of personality he has since the last episode of season one and the rest of season 2 because he's starting to be himself.
He's really dependent and it's really weird how you're saying he's not when it's so obvious.
Charlie has a whole life besides Nick, like him being in a band and being the head boy of his year. Charlie is dependent too and it's very clear but Nick's dependency is kind of obsessive and it's not good for him.
Also, heartstopper isn't "fanfic" or a BL, the whole reason Alice started to make the comic is because she created them for solitaire and later they wanted to make a story of how the two of them started going out and with that show a lot more about Charlie struggling with his mental health and Nick as a character. They could've even ended the story when they got together but she didn't, they wanted to show a lot more things about the characters as individuals than just their relationship

My final thoughts about season 1 of Heartstopper
Was surprised by how little they changed from the books (despite being told as much by a very helpful fan).
It just felt like there was....more. Not saying Alice is a bad writer (she literally created one of my newest obsessions & is helping make the show), but the graphic novels are almost exclusively Nick & Charlie focused. Which isn't bad, persay. I literally love them as individual characters & as a couple, but it definitely makes the story feel "smaller" & a little rushed at times, to me (but I know she originally created Heartstopper when she was very young so I think stuff like that are very understandable flaws) & I'm sure tons of people don't have a problem with the pacing of the books & might even find the show too slow or "bloated'. I, however, personally appreciate the changes made (minus not getting to witness Nick whine to his mum about his boyfriend not being allowed to come on their holiday because that was hilarious). Most storylines were neither dragged out for too long nor so quickly resolved that things ended on an anticlimatic note, with most characters being given enough time, with the amount of episodes they have, for characters to doubt/second guess themselves & argue like obviously they're teens & are going through difficult stuff (I know haters wanna act like this series is "too perfect, that it's boring," but most of the characters are lgbtq+ & are shown facing at least some kind of struggle because of that). Which just gives the series a little more time to breathe. I think this is clearly shown/felt with the supporting cast.
The big moments in the book seem to be solely Nick or Charlie's. The other characters, much more secondary, only getting snippets of focus/attention tacked on at the end of volumes or their situations already being pretty much established by the time they're introduced. Theres little discovery for them, no getting to see the stirings of them first developing/realising a crush. Instead, Elle & Tao already like each other (even if they won't admit it) & their friend group already knows. Tara is just tottally open about being a lesbian from the get go (seemingly suffering no scrutiny) when we meet her in the book & so we never get Darcy feeling bad about how the change in their relationship is difficult for the person she loves.
I guess it's so we, the audience, can strictly focus on the development of the Nick x Charlie relationship. Which again isn't bad, but I definitely prefer it this way. Changes the serise from having two leads & the rest just being supporting characters to it feeling much more like an ensemble cast of genuine friends who all have their own lives & issues to sort out.
Also I actually kinda love the addition of Imogen like yeah she was annoying with the 'who your texting' thing & just how oblivious she was about Nick clearly not being into her (she over came that though, thank god) but even when she was at her most problimatic (I'm an ally) she was at least hilarious. I've said 'Come on Nickalous' to myself at least once a day since I watched that episode & you're gonna have to rip that habit from my cold, dead hands! In conclusion, some of you are a little too eager to hate on teen girls sometimes (like, at worst, she's cringey). I do hope she's more respectful in regards to LGBTQ+ stuff moving forward of course, but like character development is also a thing & unlike Harry & Ben (self haiting though he obviously is) she wasn't shown to be an actual bully. I just think the internet, which woobifies toxic male characters on the regular, shouldn't judge her as harshly as I've seen some people do (though I will admit a lot of them are probably doing so mostly as a joke, its just a little weird hearing adults refer to someone who's supposed to be like 15, as a bitch/slut). Anyway, rant over, lol.
Can't wait to continue this lovely series.

Just finished watching the red white and royal blue movie, here are my immediate thoughts:
1. Omg this movie actually made me so emotional, I didn't expect to cry, I don't cry at movies much but this one, for many reasons, really made me feel a lot of things. I can already tell it will be a huge comfort movie for me going forward and this is simply because of the incredible story that Casey Mcquinston created, the directing of Matthew Lopez, and the acting of Taylor Zakhar Perez, Nicolas Galitzine and many more. (If ANYONE wants to say they have no chemistry I will fight you)
2. The way that the relationship between Henry and Alex is shown is incredibly well conveyed and in a way which could be realistic. We see that sweet sweet enemies to lovers but even after they get together it continues to develop and their connection grows stronger into a special bond which we see at the end of the movie (no not the post credit scene, that was a lil silly, nice touch though). Also going off on a slight tangent here, one of my main complaints about heartstopper season 2 was that Nick and Charlie are always kissing/making out, I was worried that this would also be the case for rwrb, but it definately wasn't. I read so many articles on how the intimacy coordinator directed the two actors and how much they themselves researched into the role to really deliver their best performences. It definately paid off. I felt that there was a really nice balance between the really intimate scenes which we see a lot of in the book and sweet tender moments where they really show that these two characters really love each other and aren't just super horny.
3. The sets and the way they filmed the whole thing. yes. The main one I want to comment on is the iconic cake scene, which as I said, I read a lot of interviews, and from those I know that Matthew Lopez had a vision for this scene which he worked really hard to get perfect, and it had a really good turnout (I know I already mentioned it but I love the post credit scene so much). One of my favourite things was Matthew Lopez revealing that the birds eye shot of cake falling onto Alex and Henry was him and another crew member dumping cake into them, this isn't that relevant to my thoughts but I just found that detail hilarious as Lopez said it was a "good way to let off steam." Other than that scene, which for me was a very important part of the film, I don't really know much about the technical side of a production like this, but as a viewer it all came together nicely and the sets were nice.
4. A reason I really connect with this film is the fact that I am a queer teenager who has learned to accept themself, gone through the coming out process (somewhat, we don't talk about extended family). I absolutely love the positive representation that this movie gives to the queer community. For people who have not read the book, it is an incredible story, and for a lot of people it shows for the first time in media that LGBTQ+ people can have their happy ending, it won't be easy to get there but it is worth it in the end. While in reality we see this with queer couples a lot, the community has had to fight for their rights and are still in that process, in countries where it is legal it is still very common to be judged, attacked and even killed for your self expression. So for me this was a very fresh (even though I read the book) story for the community, to show that the battles are worth fighting for your happiness. As I touched on before, I think a reason that this works so well is that the characters are so relatable to the average viewer, despite their positions. The are made to be comedic and actually have banter like you'd expect, it's not uptight and only about the romance and spicy scenes. This is really comforting to so many people out there and it feels very appropriate with the world we live in now. I would say my favourite scene in the entire film was the v&a scene, it's so cute I don't know how else to put it, literally a romance dream. Sorry if that was my worst tangent yet, you can tell I'm passionate on the subject.
5. I just wanted to mention some of the other characters. Like a lot of people I was really disappointed to find out that characters such as June and Liam would not be in the movie, however I think this is made up for by the great portrayal of other characters, my favourite being Nora who, let's be real, is not only Alex and Henry's number 1 shipper, but also just gives the best advice. Everyone in this movie genuinely gave such a great performence and I can only thank the entire team for giving us the adaptation that the book deserves.
6. I'm giving the spicy scenes their own point to mainly say that they aren't even that spicy, I personally don't even see why this film was given an r rating and I believe, as many others have said, that if this film was a straight romcom then it wouldn't be given that rating. Yes you see them with clothes off, there's no dick, you only actually see them having sex once, the others are mainly foreplay, really nothing that explicit.
7. I thought I would also dedicate a point to the travesty that is certain quotes from the book that were not included, "you obtuse fucking asshole." "fucking eyelashes." and "Remus John Lupin is gay as the day is long." (ok they probably couldn't get copyright permission to add that one) "I'm gonna take your pants off now... yes good carry on." "for fucks sake man you just had my dick in your mouth, you can kiss me goodnight." and "what in the rich white people sex dungeon." I know that they probably didn't want the script to be a direct copy of this book but some of these quotes would've been nice, also I like that they atleast mentioned the PowerPoint, despite not having the actual PowerPoint.
I hope you enjoyed my overly formal review/thoughts on the rwrb movie which slowly got more deranged in the hour that I was writing this, I began writing this around 3:20am just after I finished the movie, and it's safe to say, I won't be coming back to this to correct any spelling or punctuation mistakes. Overall I love the film, as typical as it is for a romcom, I love the characters and I really like what they were able to do in the 2 hours of the film. Obviously it's never going to be a perfect adaptation but I loved every second of it nonetheless. It's cheesy, it's romantic, but that's what gives it it's charm and makes me love it so much. I'll be hoping for a series to futher explore the story but that'll probably stay in my delusions.
It is now 4:20am, goodnight (I'm not going to sleep, I'm just not being formal anymore)

8 Shows to Get to Know Me
The rules seem pretty simple, just to list 8 shows to get to know me. Some people have explanations and some don't so we'll see.
Thanks for the tag @bengiyo!
There are many shows I wanted to add on this list because I love them so much but this isn't a list of my favorite shows. This is supposed to tell something about me. So I tried to pick the shows that I relate to, was obsessed with, used to watch as a kid or just for the ✨ vibes ✨
Tumblr media
1. Koisenu Futari
This is one show I relate to the most because I'm aroace. Both Sakuko and Takahashi are aroace and want to live together because they feel lonely by themselves. It's a really great show that just has 2 people figure out how to make their own version of a family in a world where everyone expects you to marry and have children. People like us can feel lost as to what the future might look like because there isn't a path we can follow. Nobody tells us what a happy life might look like if you don't have and don't want a partner so Sakuko and Takahashi are new to this form of family they're trying to create. They want to create something that works for them but nobody around the has similar lives so they have to figure it out all on their own.
Tumblr media
2. Bad Buddy
I'm not gay or bi or pan, I'm aroace which means that while I love BL, I don't really relate to it so I didn't want to put many on this list. But Bad Buddy was such a great experience that it deserves a place on this list. This show aired episodes weekly and I love love love everything we did during the week we had to wait for a new episode. People were analyzing Everything from the colors to the dialogue to the music. And I read every single post. Every Friday I would mute the Clown Server on Discord until I could watch the episode. I love how we all talked about the new episode for hours. I would come home and watch the episode and we would still be talking about new points even when I went to bed. Even in the morning I would wake up to new messages. It was amazing.
Tumblr media
3. Kieta Hatsukoi / My Love Mix-Up!
A BL that is not often on anyone's favorites list but it is on mine. The leads don't kiss but that doesn't really matter to me because it's a really cute show. It's the way Aoki and Hashimoto have the best friendship and support each other even when they thought they liked the same guy. It's how Ida doesn't understand love and is figuring that out very respectfully. He's really giving Aoki a real chance. He's trying to figure out if he likes Aoki without any moment of internalized homophobia. And also he's demiro in my book and I love him for that.
Tumblr media
4. Heartstopper
I love love love the Heartstopper comic. I read it and reread it and rereread it even before the show was even announced. The show itself was everything I hoped for and it was amazing and perfect. I love Isaac of course who is our aroace icon. I'm so glad Alice decided to put him in the group since she had to erase Aled (love you). The second season has apparently big aroace plans for him so excited about that! I love the friendship in this show, they're all so sweet and lovely. I love Nick and Charlie who have such a good, healthy relationship. I love Nick's mom and how she supports her son.
Tumblr media
5. Yuri On Ice
Yes we were born to make history! Another show I was obsessed with and I loved the experience of watching it just as much as the anime itself. Just like with Bad Buddy I would be on tumblr reading posts about those freaking rings and the kiss and everyone went crazy over all of that and it was amazing. I still remember watching the preview for episode 10 (I think?) and watching Everyone go crazy over the possibility that the something round and gold could be rings. Or! Would it be a gold medal? We didn't know but we sure as hell had a fun time freaking out about the possibilities.
Tumblr media
6. Your Name / Kimi no Na Wa
This one has to be on the list even though it's a movie. I've watched this movie so many times, it's basically my personality. The art and animation is gorgeous, like wow it's so pretty and smooth, I love it. The way Taki and Mitsuha never met but they came to care for each other and care for the lives they lived in each other's bodies. Taki loves Mitsuha's family and wants to do everything in his power to save them. Also can I talk about the music? Radwimps is such a great choice for this movie, they make beautiful music for this kind of music.
Tumblr media
7. Natsume Yuujinchou / Natsume's Book of Friends
Another anime I really love. This one has 6 seasons and it's still not enough. I love this show for it's slice of life feel with a supernatural twist. It's a very slow show where not much happens on the surface but every episode has a nice story. It's lovely to see that Natsume warms up to his new family. The first time he has a family that really, truly cares about him and doesn't tell him he's crazy. Only a few anime make me want to read the manga and this is one of them.
Tumblr media
8. Avatar The Last Airbender
I used to watch this show as a kid with my dad. We both love it, it's a very beautiful show. It has a clear story overall but also great individual episodes. It has funny moments but also serious ones. It's a bunch of teenagers going on an adventure to save the world, what's not to love? And then there is Zuko with uncle Iroh who have the best redemption arc and some of the best lines in the show. Iconic duo. Anyways, when do I get my magic water powers?
Tagging @onstoryladders and @gilly-bean and @inazumaelle if you haven't done it yet. And anyone who wants to!

There's being supportive and there's being a side character/love interest in your own life. The Nick/Charlie relationship is completely one-sided, Nick exists to accommodate Charlie and even his hobbies like rugby and baking are just there to make him more appealing as a wish fulfilment love interest. He has zero flaws. He makes zero mistakes. He's perfection incarnate especially in regards to Charlie. Charlie the protagonist on the other hand is allowed to be very flawed and occasionally undesirable. Nick has to invoke comfort and lust 24/7. That's what makes it unrealistic.
Hi anon! And thanks for bringing me your perspective!
I guess I get what you're saying, but to me the wish fulfillment in Heartstopper isn't a thing that's exclusive to Nick's character? By that I mean that even though the main characters in the series are all teenagers, they are very in touch with their emotions, really mature in their relationships and able to be instantly great partners for their significant others. I think that in some ways Charlie is just as much of a wish fulfillment love interest as Nick is. When Nick is scared of coming out, Charlie is always ready to comfort him and reassure him that he doesn't owe that information to anyone. When Nick isn't ready to have sex, Charlie assures him that they never have to do it if Nick doesn't want to. This constant reassurance and lack of pressure should be present in every relationship, yes, but Charlie is not a partner most of us had when we were sixteen.
Nick doesn't have any flaws as far as I can recall, but to be honest, neither do many of the other main characters in the series. Charlie is insecure, but I wouldn't say he is very flawed, I think most of the characters are portrayed as remarkably nice and patient people. And yeah, that is unrealistic when you consider their ages, but to me it is part of what makes Heartstopper the series it is.
I agree that in the series currently they are at a point where Charlie needs more care than Nick, but in my opinion Nick's feelings in that situation are portrayed very well. To me he feels like a really honest portrayal of a young teenager in his first real relationship, trying so hard to be a good partner to someone who is dealing with stuff he himself is unfamiliar with. Him struggling trying to understand Charlie feels really earnest to me and I'm waiting for season three and how they'll continue to deal with problems together.
Personally I can't agree with Nick existing to accommodate Charlie. Maybe I was watching the show weirdly, but I think on season two he had more life outside of Charlie than Charlie did outside of him? Not that either of them really had many scenes without the other, since, you know, these are the teenagers in love in the teenagers-in-love show. Anyway, I think Nick's bisexual awakening in season one and his coming out plot and his plot with his dad in season two were both generally good storylines. I find him as a character really relatable and him as a love interest really realistic, that's why I find it hard to understand the critique of him being an unrealistic wish fulfillment character.

2023 BOOK REVIEWS
════════⊹⊱≼≽⊰⊹════════
Tumblr media
Heartstopper volumes 1-4
Cute but a very light and quick read, I finished all four volumes in a couple of days. It wasn't new to me though so it doesn't really count.
Also I have to be in the mood for heartstopper and that's not always the case.
That being said, the queer represention is great, Nick and Charlie's relationship is very well written and developed and all of the characters feel very genuine and like they're their own people.
Overall it's a 4/5, definitely worth reading.

Bitterthorn
It was good but I think the relationship between the two characters was kind of toxic and it dragged on for really long. Also some scenes were unnecessarily over described.
However the story was very interesting and I was very intrigued to find out what the hell the witch was up to. The reveal was quite good and unexpected and the ending was also pretty satisfying.
3,5/5 it was interesting but it could have been better.

All that's left in the world
I will never shut up about this book. I LOVE IT OMGGGGGGG. I love their relationship they are so cute goddamn.
It caught me immediately, I haven't enjoyed reading this much in YEARS. it's perfect, it has angst, cute romance, suspense, a little mystery and it balances it all so well.
I really enjoyed how it's told from both the characters povs and I find it's written in a very natural way, it really feels like you're listening to the characters thoughts. It was also really funny and so relatable.
There was also some deeper topics it touched on and some strong scenes which I think were beautifully written and again very natural.
(There is a sequel coming out in may of next year)
5/5 I have reccomended this book to everyone I know and will continue to do so. I cannot stress this enough, GO READ IT!!!
════════⊹⊱≼≽⊰⊹════════

Through the woods
It was a very short read, it can easily be finished in an hour.
Very good art, a couple of drawings were kind of scary but I think, because of how short it was, the stories were too vague and loosely explained for it to really be frightening.
I think it would've worked way better as an illustrated book rather than a graphic novel.
3/5, it isn't terrible. If you're interested in the art style definitely buy it, otherwise I'd say you can skip this one.
════════⊹⊱≼≽⊰⊹════════
Tumblr media
Nick and Charlie
Again, a very light and quick read. It's nick and charlie so you know it's going to be cute, but it does feel a tad bit more mature than heartstopper.
Also I think a lot of people can relate to the story (or at least some aspects of it).
4/5, it's a short story and if you've already read heartstopper, you might as well read it.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo
Slay slay slay. Very well written, great story and keeps you hooked from the beginning.
I loved the way it told the story slowly, some things you don't pick up on or don't make sense initially but the more you read the more you piece them together and the end just ties it all up perfectly. It's mostly a sad story but there are some really sweet moments which are a breath of fresh air.
All of the characters are very complex and feel like real people, especially Evelyn (who is described as "painfully human") she is such a well rounded, captivating and complicated character.
5/5 it's such an interesting story, I definitely recommend it.

okay help me pick which book to buy. im putting the full amazon descriptions
1. Like many ambitious New York City teenagers, Craig Gilner sees entry into Manhattan’s Executive Pre-Professional High School as the ticket to his future. Determined to succeed at life—which means getting into the right high school to get into the right college to get the right job—Craig studies night and day to ace the entrance exam, and does. That’s when things start to get crazy.
At his new school, Craig realizes that he isn't brilliant compared to the other kids; he’s just average, and maybe not even that. He soon sees his once-perfect future crumbling away. The stress becomes unbearable and Craig stops eating and sleeping—until, one night, he nearly kills himself.
Craig’s suicidal episode gets him checked into a mental hospital, where his new neighbors include a transsexual sex addict, a girl who has scarred her own face with scissors, and the self-elected President Armelio. There, isolated from the crushing pressures of school and friends, Craig is finally able to confront the sources of his anxiety.
2. Five months ago, Valerie Leftman's boyfriend, Nick, opened fire on their school cafeteria. Shot trying to stop him, Valerie inadvertently saved the life of a classmate, but was implicated in the shootings because of the list she helped create. A list of people and things she and Nick hated. The list he used to pick his targets.
Now, after a summer of seclusion, Val is forced to confront her guilt as she returns to school to complete her senior year. Haunted by the memory of the boyfriend she still loves and navigating rocky relationships with her family, former friends, and the girl whose life she saved, Val must come to grips with the tragedy that took place and her role in it, in order to make amends and move on with her life.
3. Charlotte Davis is in pieces. At seventeen she’s already lost more than most people do in a lifetime. But she’s learned how to forget. The broken glass washes away the sorrow until there is nothing but calm. You don’t have to think about your father and the river. Your best friend, who is gone forever. Or your mother, who has nothing left to give you.
Every new scar hardens Charlie’s heart just a little more, yet it still hurts so much. It hurts enough to not care anymore, which is sometimes what has to happen before you can find your way back from the edge.
4. In The Power, the world is a recognizable place: there's a rich Nigerian boy who lounges around the family pool; a foster kid whose religious parents hide their true nature; an ambitious American politician; a tough London girl from a tricky family.
But then a vital new force takes root and flourishes, causing their lives to converge with devastating effect. Teenage girls now have immense physical power: they can cause agonizing pain and even death. And, with this small twist of nature, the world drastically resets. From award-winning author Naomi Alderman, The Power is speculative fiction at its most ambitious and provocative, at once taking us on a thrilling journey to an alternate reality, and exposing our own world in bold and surprising ways.
5. Sloane knows better than to cry in front of anyone. With suicide now an international epidemic, one outburst could land her in The Program, the only proven course of treatment. Sloane’s parents have already lost one child; Sloane knows they’ll do anything to keep her alive. She also knows that everyone who’s been through The Program returns as a blank slate. Because their depression is gone—but so are their memories.
Under constant surveillance at home and at school, Sloane puts on a brave face and keeps her feelings buried as deep as she can. The only person Sloane can be herself with is James. He’s promised to keep them both safe and out of treatment, and Sloane knows their love is strong enough to withstand anything. But despite the promises they made to each other, it’s getting harder to hide the truth. They are both growing weaker. Depression is setting in.
6. Esme is born into a world of words. Motherless and irrepressibly curious, she spends her childhood in the Scriptorium, an Oxford garden shed in which her father and a team of dedicated lexicographers are collecting words for the very first Oxford English Dictionary. Young Esme’s place is beneath the sorting table, unseen and unheard. One day a slip of paper containing the word bondmaid flutters beneath the table. She rescues the slip and, learning that the word means “slave girl,” begins to collect other words that have been discarded or neglected by the dictionary men.
As she grows up, Esme realizes that words and meanings relating to women’s and common folks’ experiences often go unrecorded. And so she begins in earnest to search out words for her own dictionary: the Dictionary of Lost Words. To do so she must leave the sheltered world of the university and venture out to meet the people whose words will fill those pages.
7. Kurouzu-cho, a small fogbound town on the coast of Japan, is cursed. According to Shuichi Saito, the withdrawn boyfriend of teenager Kirie Goshima, their town is haunted not by a person or being but a pattern: UZUMAKI, the spiral—the hypnotic secret shape of the world. The bizarre masterpiece horror manga is now available all in a single volume. Fall into a whirlpool of terror!

this. this. this. this smile is so important to me everytime i watch it. i think we all sighed with relief with charlie when we saw this. we didn't want another Ben even tho nick would never(and I've read the novels but still). this frame extinguished my anxiety, my insecurity. nick can't contain his smile he's literally trying not to break out blushing and giggling and shit. he likes him he's confused but he knows he doesn't want to distance himself from charlie.
i think this is such an important topic when it comes to acceptance or the idea of "I'm still the same person" when someone's exploring their sexuality. they still maintain their proximity as they used to when they were just friends but now they're more. now there are stolen glances and smiles and secrets and fireworks. there's a change in their relationship. there's a reason romantic and platonic relationships aren't same. they overlap sure but there are differences that you can't fulfil with the other. i like to think of this scene as an embodiment of "i have changed but in a way that just makes me more me" this beginning stage of their transition to a relationship from a friendship is just so perfect. it's awkward and cute and heartwarming. change isn't always bad change can be growth.
yes, maybe i did read too much into it but this is more of a projection on a show that has a sizable impact on me. so let me have this :)

Thank you @azfellco for explaining to me the situation
Tumblr media
Honestly, if you want my opinion? I think this whole thing is so stupid, because how is it that after all these months Kit STILL has queerbaiting allegations??
First of all, STOP. ASSUMING. KIT'S (OR ANYONE'S). SEXUALITY. PLEASE. How many more times must the poor guy say that he's comfortable with his own sexuality and just doesn't want to disclose it to the public for personal reasons for people to LEAVE HIM ALONE. Like my god, how can someone watch a show like heartstopper then immediately start contributing to this toxic culture of forcing people out of the closet for your own selfish reasons? There's literally a whole storyline of how badly affected Charlie Spring was after being outed, but that CLEARLY flew over their heads for some reason. It's ridiculous. We're not his friends. We're not his family. We. Are. Just. Fans. We are entitled to ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about his personal life.
Secondly, if for all those who are just so insistent that Kit just HAS to be straight because he held hands with someone of the opposite sex, and therefore should not be playing a queer character, do you even hear yourselves? I've already spoken in depth about my views on straight actors playing queer characters, my general message being that I think it's completely fine so long as they have been handling it respectfully and giving the community the respect it deserves, something I believe Kit has done wonderfully. But more than that, what's up with this weird assumption that someone is definitely heterosexual if they are in a heterosexual relationship??? There is more to sexuality than gay or straight. Take Maia for example. She is openly part of the LGBTQ community, so are y'all going to tell her she's straight and has been lying the whole time, simply because of that few second clip? I DIDN'T THINK SO. This is literally just promoting bi erasure, pan erasure, erasure of any sexuality that isn't simply attracted to the same sex (AND ON BISEXUAL VISIBILITY MONTH TOO???). Once again, how did you watch heartstopper, hear nick nelson say "I still like girls, but I like boys too." AND THEN GO AND DO THIS. I'm convinced some of these people just didn't watch the show and became fans through tiktok edits or something.
Finally, say that they are dating. So what? How does Kit and Maia's personal relationship affect Kit's job as an actor in heartstopper in any way shape or form? Were these people expecting Joe and Kit to get married or something? Or for neither of them to be in relationships with other people ever? I know that they're both the perfect portrayals of Nick and Charlie, but at the end of the day THESE ARE CHARACTERS THAT THEY ARE PLAYING. None of the relationships in shows or movies, romantic especially, need to be translated to real life for us to enjoy the work. If you're that type of person, then by that logic Kit and Maia are technically bringing on screen romance off screen, since they're starring in ACGGTTAT together. Seriously, you can't expect actors to bring every single romantic relationship they portray on screen into real life, that's entirely unrealistic. Also, while I understand the curiosity behind our faves' relationship statuses, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't guilty of that, at the end of the day it's really none of our business (going back to the point of how we are just fans and are owed nothing by public figures). If they're dating, that's great, I'm happy for them. If they're not? Also cool, we love to see a wholesome friendship. Speculate if you must, but don't go digging around the internet for evidence or god forbid, start harassing Kit or Maia about this. Just keep your theories to yourself or at most talk about it casually in a little chat with friends or something. Let's not blow this up into a huge thing and just let them be yeah?
So that's my two cents on this whole situation. Dating or not, I can't wait to see them both in ACGGTTAT, and ofc, I can't wait for season 2 of heartstopper <3

Dolphins at Midday
Wc 998, established relationship, eating disorder, beach trip
As Nick pulls him enthusiastically towards the water Charlie checks his watch- 1 p.m.
"Oh, Char, did you see? Dolphins! Straight out!"
They'd had a light lunch before getting ready to walk to the beach, both donning white cotton t-shirts for different reasons, but Charlie's stomach already felt like it was gnawing on itself. Squinting through his sunglasses, he tried to spot Nick's dolphins. If they walk for an hour out and an hour back- "Yeah, Nick, that's really cool!" -then that'll be about 3 hours since they ate and he can have a snack. He'll deserve-
"Are these dolphins though, or porpoises? There's a difference, right?" Nick has his unoccupied hand shielding his eyes from the bright sun.  Another pod shows their fins further out and Nick squeals excitedly again. Charlie grins despite his stomach.
"You were right the first time, most likely. Porpoises aren't common in these waters."
Nick glances at him in surprise before turning back to the dolphins. There appear to be two or three pods and they're moving away from the shore.
Still intently watching the water, Nick squeezes his hands and says, "So you were doing some research last night after I fell asleep instead of watching the movie?"
"Oh you expect me to give Thor my full attention when you literally fell asleep!"
"Oi!"
They stand there until the last dolphin swims out of sight. Nick swings their arms, "Ready?"
Charlie lifts his pail for shells. "Ready."
They head south down the shore and begin the search. Every few minutes Nick pulls Charlie in one direction or the other and bends down to pick up a shell. Charlie is mostly enjoying the sound of the waves and the warmth of the sun as the mosey along. And tries not to constantly check his watch. Forty more minutes and then they can-
"Char?" Apparently he's unsuccessful and his boyfriend is incredibly observant.
"Yeah?" Charlie plasters a smile on his face. Not that he's not enjoying this. He's just so hungry. But he's already eaten twice today and he should really just wait until dinner which he totally won't talk himself out of-
"What's wrong?"
"Nothing!" Charlie starts walking again but is pulled to a stop by Nick.
"Honest?"
"Honest." And really, being a little hungry isn't a big deal. Well, it shouldn't be. Nick narrows his eyes but lets Charlie pull him along this time. After a few minutes of worried glances Nick returns to choosing shells. He finds one that is very old and worn that looks like brains. Another that is perfectly smooth and orange like the fruit. A nearly perfect olive.
"Char, what does this remind you of?" Nick holds up a shell with pink and orange coloring.
"Sorbet?" Charlie ventures. Oh and does sorbet sound delicious right now.
"Yeah! Raspberry and mango sorbet!" The shell goes in the pail and they carry on. Charlie tries to discreetly check his watch. Ten more minutes. Nick pauses to pick up a shell with cool worm spots worn in and squeezes Charlie's hand as he drops the shell in the pail. Charlie's stomach growls and he's thankful for the waves crashing.
"Ready to head back?"
No! It hasn't been long enough! "Ten more minutes?"
Nick narrows his eyes again. Charlie is dying to look away but holds steady. Today is turning into a mental shitshow and as much as he wants to lean on his boyfriend, he just…can't.
"Alright."
Ten minutes later, Charlie's stomach is screaming at him as Nick turns them around without a word. Charlie can tell he knows something is up because he's chattering more than usual. Commenting on the beachfront properties, fancy equipment people splurged on, cool water toys, and cute dogs. He leaves room for Charlie to respond but doesn't appear hurt when he's merely met with small smiles.
Finally, after what feels like three hours, their aching feet reach the beach access point. Bracing themselves they start the trek over the burning hot sand. Halfway across Nick drops Charlie's hand only to pick him up in a bridal carry the rest of the way. Despite himself, Charlie is giggling and feels a bit lighter as he slips his feet into his sandals.
That ends when they reach their rental house. Now, facing the actual prospect of eating, Charlie feels himself shutting down. There are four flights of stairs between him and the kitchen and Nick pulls him into their room before ascending the last two. He closes the door behind them and pulls Charlie into a sweaty, sunscreen-y hug. And that's the last straw. Charlie bursts into tears as Nick rubs his back.
Nick doesn't try to find out what's wrong as his shirt catches Charlie's tears. He just holds on whispering that he's here and it'll be alright. Eventually Charlie's breathing evens out and his tears slow.
"Shit," Charlie whispers, "I'm so-"
"Hey, none of that. Remember? I chose you and I continue to choose you even, no, especially, on bad days."
Charlie nods against Nick's shoulder.
"What do you need, Char?"
"I'm so hungry. But I don't feel like I deserve anything to eat because we just ate-"
"Babe that was almost 4 hours ago and we just engaged in physical activity!" Nick's voice softens when he adds, "and you always deserve to eat."
Charlie closes his eyes. "I know. I'll try to eat something.
Up in the kitchen Charlie starts to spiral as he and Nick go through their options. Finally he admits he's overwhelmed and Nick closes the pantry.
"Ok. What sounds good? Just like, gut reaction."
"Sorbet." Charlie surprises himself with how quickly he answers. Nick's eyebrows raise.
"Yeah," Nick grins as he reaches for his car keys, "let's go then."
It's a little tricky finding sorbet on the island but soon enough they're sharing sticky raspberry and mango kisses. Tomorrow might be another bad day. Or it might be better. Either way he knows Nick will be there.

Hurt and Comfort (1) Masterlist
Anywhere, Anywhere (Ao3) - draculard
Summary: At Harry Greene's Sweet Sixteen, Ben goes a little further than just a forced kiss.
Nick is there to pick up the pieces.
Back On Your Feet (Ao3) - justmeandmysillystuff
Summary: After a severe injury, Nick loses mobility from the waist down. He and Charlie had been living together for a while, and the accident completely alters their routine and their daily life. This is a story about emotional responsibility and support, dealing with a very difficult situation in the healthiest way possible, with love and good communication.
They are Nick and Charlie, after all. They will always get back on their feet.
Chaos Theory (Ao3) - paperstorm
Summary: Chaos Theory. Noun. The study of random or unforeseeable behaviour within systems governed by deterministic laws. Consider a pinball machine: the ball's movements are bound by laws of gravitational rolling and elastic collisions - both fully understood - yet the outcome is entirely unpredictable.
Or: a boy with glittery eyes and dark, curly hair sits next to Nick in form, and then nothing is ever the same. A retelling of the story through Nick’s eyes, in which one seemingly insignificant moment sets off a chain reaction that changes everything
Dip You in Honey So I Could Be Sticking to You (Ao3) - yousopuglywrites
Summary: Nick is just about to walk out the door for a pub night when his mum calls him. He knows there's only one reason she would be calling, unprompted, at this hour on a Thursday. Something's happened with Charlie.
Getaway (Ao3) - trashterpiece
Summary: Nick is back from university for the weekend and learns that it's okay to open up and ask for help. Charlie is there all along.
got me feeling blue (as my lips and fingertips) (Ao3) - maycollins
Summary: Uni's a lot harder than Nick anticipated. Assignments. Rugby. Being away from his boyfriend. Coming out to his new flatmates. For years, he's been a shoulder to cry on and a sympathetic ear and a stable place to land, but if he's going to get through this next phase of his life, he's going to have to learn to accept the the help he's so used to giving.
I Can Tell by the Way You Carry Yourself (Ao3) - celtic_flicka
Summary: Nick loves to take care of other people, and he's good at it. But he's not good at letting anyone know when he needs to be taken care of. Charlie notices.
Migraines and Coffee Don't Mix (Ao3) - lexywantssleep
Summary: Charlie could have easily taken off work, he knew that. He had only missed maybe two days in the three years he had been working at Bay Leaf Coffee House. He was always right on time, if not early, and offered to cover other’s shifts on his days off. Charlie, in other words, was the ideal picture of a perfect employee. So, when he came in with the worst migraine he’s ever experienced in his life, it would have been no issue to call in.
Nothing To Say (Ao3) - bitemeimirish
Summary: Nick is at Uni and Charlie isn't dealing with their long-distance relationship very well. He misses Nick and doesn't know how to handle it. Spoiler alert: he handles it all wrong.
sweetheart, you look a little tired (Ao3) - ace_astronaut
Summary: When the Truham rugby team is down two players ahead of their upcoming match, Nick turns to Charlie for help. Little does he know, Charlie isn’t feeling too well himself.
But of course, Charlie agrees to play anyway. And they both have to deal with the consequences.
when you feel like this (Ao3) - nickcharlie
Summary: Charlie struggles to eat his dinner that night. He and Nick figure out something new.

Charlie's journey
Chapter 1 - (Bear with me, it's a long one)
Heartstopper is often summed up at Nick and Charlie’s relationship, and more precisely focusing on Nick’s journey. And not to say that Nick’s journey is not a big part of Heartstopper (even though people tend to focus only on his sexual orientation’s awakening, which is only part of it), but what about Charlie? Is Charlie only the scrawny geek boy with and a**hole "boyfriend" who manages to turn the rugby king bi?… Nah.
So at first, Charlie defines himself as " small and weak ":
Tumblr media
It’s reinforced by the rugby team speaking before he joins them (with the « gay being weak/not good at sport » comment being the cherry on the cake, because Harry is such a pleasure to be around) :
Tumblr media
...Charming.
Even Tao (who's also worried because of Harry and the other guys) warns him about not being strong enough:
Tumblr media
And we can even see at first that he feels like he doesn't belong: in that shot, we can see Charlie appearing miiiiillllles away from the rest of the team. Barely being in the frame:
Tumblr media
And he even repeats to Nick that he is too weak by stating that he is "going to die" from trying to tackle him.
He doesn't believe he can do it. And it's really to add to Nick's credit that Charlie becomes a part of the team: he involves him in everything, training, discussions:
Tumblr media
He doesn't put him aside.
Tumblr media
And always cheers him on, until the whole team is cheering.
Tumblr media
And eventually, he enjoys being part of the team, look at that smile:
Tumblr media
He achieved something he thought not possible out of perseverance and support (Nick's). If it doesn't warm my cold heart, I don't know what could.
Later, we can see that is got some difficulty with tackling, and he gets bad comments from his teammates about it.
Tumblr media
But what does he do when confronted to some Hulk lookalike guy from the opposing team? He actually tries to tackle the guy ! And yes he got hurt because of it, but he tried, he believed he could do it. The fact is, this time he believed in his strength, even if just a little.
For me it resonates with the race during the sport's day event: Charlie is entering the race confident that he can win. He doesn't go just for the race, he goes to win. He knows he runs fast and he isn't shy about this strength.
Tumblr media
That smile at the end is priceless.
So, Charlie here is a perfect example of the influence that words have: when you are told over and over that you'll fail, that you are weak, that you can not do something... Well you start to believe it !
People around you can be toxic by imposing their beliefs of who and what you are ("you are too fat", "you are too stupid", "you are too shy", etc, pick one of your choice, I'm sure we've all been there).
This here is, of course, only one aspect of Charlie's journey, but I think this post is actually very long so I'll end here.
I'll post more soon ! :)
