Thank yooouu!!!! I am pretty pleased with that framing for them ever since it occured to me when I was writing out that protective/possessive Jayce post! It really clicked using that description as the summation of the VIBE I got from them even in Season1. That vibe where it's undeniable that Jayce is more physically forward and LOOKS like he's taking charge in those moments where he puts a hand out to hold Viktor back and it LOOKS at first like Viktor just goes along with things.

But there is just. That vibe. That sense. Something about noticing how much Jayce can act assertive but very much wants someone else directing him as Season1 goes. Something about how he's always moving around Viktor. And part of it clicks when you see him putting his head in Mel's lap repeatedly like every single giant dog that does not realize they are not lap size. Then somethinnggg about "man every time he's doing that or even talking to Mel he ends up talking about Viktor huh"

And THEN the something...something about Viktor. About his mix of quiet introversion but the very self assured confidence he carries himself with. The way if something frustrates him he looks over at Jayce like "do something about that." The way that as soon as they partner up it's like he becomes this quiet pivot point holding lots of eye contact while pushing Jayce to do crimes and then being the force of calm confidence as the pressure mounted trying to stabilize the hexgem for the first time. Something about how he always takes Jayce's constant touches and physical looming like it's perfectly natural and you don't know why, but it doesn't feel like Jayce is imposing on him???

And then (for me at least lmao) that exchange on the bridge makes it all CLICK. Jayce got so wound up he ended up snapping at Viktor (bc he is a high energy dog and his response to stress/fear is baring teeth lmao) and Viktor does not even look up as he smacks Jayce's hand away. Does not GLANCE at Jayce as he very pointedly moves away from him and out of Jayce's personal space bubble. And Jayce's hand flinches where it's held out and he immediately says "I'm sorry" in the smallest voice. And THEN, only THEN does Viktor allow the hand on his back to lead him away and you realize. holy shit. Jayce has earned touching privileges back. Holy shit.

and MAN I am usually NOT AT ALL into the idea of D/s dynamics as a lifestyle thing but with those maniacs it's like. Oh you two never even discussed that this is the dynamic. Y'all are just LIKE THAT. If Viktor ever called Jayce "good boy" even as a joke you just KNOW Jayce would DROP to his knees like it's an instinct (making for a hilariously awkward day at the lab)

Cool detail I noticed about Tristamp's Vash's shoes/boots (+ the opening/intro animation)

we can clearly see here that the footprints we see before we see the anime's logo is the same sole pattern matching Vash's shoes, right? (I had picked up on this a while back but decided against posting it cause I figured people already picked up on this) It has a pretty unique/distinct look, right? So I was listening to the Trigun OST and was looking at this iconic album cover and realized something...

I was like "oh those boots have the same little two divets at the top like Tristamp Vash... wait-" THAT'S THE SAME FUCKING OUTSOLE He even has the weird gray thing on the bottom as well! You can even make out the circle divets in the center of the sole but its kind of hard to see on this album cover. I'M FLABBERGASTED??? Like DAMN I knew Orange did their homework but this is fucking crazy to me 😭

The reason I think the Bizzies being gender swapped works way better than having the Lizzies be gay is because it makes space in this musical for women to have sexual appetites and agency towards men in a way that's fairly rare in depictions of heterosexual relationships. For the Bizzies to seduce the Warriors by offering what they know the Warriors want and have the Warriors feel empowered to take it is imo more subversive than just like. The concept that women can be attracted to other women. Within the context of Warriors, because the text does address queerness in other places, I think it ends up being a more powerful statement to depict (some of) the Warriors as heterosexual women who have sexual agency than just being like. Well in a lesbian relationship someones gotta be the "guy" and tonight its gonna be the Warriors. Cowgirl is a heterosexual woman and she likes sex and the narrative never calls her a slut for that, and even when her sex drive gets her into trouble its still explicitly the fault of the person who tricked her, not her fault for wanting to get laid. When Rembrandt is listing the needs the Bizzies are offering to fulfill for the Warriors, she lists sex right up there with food. And thats something that I feel like doesnt often get talked about with heterosexual women especially in fiction. Theyre expected to be passive. The idea that the Warriors could need to get laid as badly as they need to eat and take a nap is just treated as like yeah duh. They've had a bad night. And that IS a revolutionary thing to put in a musical.

I, jokingly, at the beginning of Severance (season one) commented on how relationships work, specifically the aspect of consent, with the innie/outie dynamic. I think I said something along the lines of "What if your outie is married on the outside, but your innie falls for one of their coworkers? How would that work?", without much thought behind it until Helly and Mark kissed. Now with the latest episode of s2, I'm thinking back to that question with my hands in my lap, staring into the abyss.

The Ancient Language and True Names: Some Musings

So as a preface, let’s first recount some of the rules of the Ancient Language we’re told/shown through the books (spoilers through Inheritance):

One cannot lie in the Ancient Language

This doesn’t mean you cannot say something objectively untrue—so long as you believe it is true, you can say it (see: Murtagh tells Eragon at the end of Eldest that they are both sons of Morzan, which Murtagh can do because he doesn’t know about Selena having an affair with Brom)

Magic, however, is a bit trickier—intent can go a long way, but a grammatical or syntactical error can obliterate your intention (see: Eragon tries to bless a child, uses the noun form of “shield” instead of the verb form, accidentally curses the child)

So what am I getting at? Well!

In Inheritance, Eragon and Saphira follow a riddle-prophecy to Doru Araeba, the magic-nuked seat of power of the previous incarnation of the Order of Dragon Riders, and find their way into the magically-hidden fallout shelter with a forgetting spell on it that holds several Eldunarya and dragon eggs protected from the magic nuke blast and hidden from Galbatorix’s reach.

Or, put another way:

Saphira Bjartskular, the first new dragon in a century, the only living female out of five living-or-soon-to-hatch dragons (the others being Glaedr, Shruikan, Thorn, and Fírnen), literally the LAST CHANCE for the existence of HER ENTIRE SPECIES… finds out that she isn’t, actually, the last chance. That dozens, a few hundreds of eggs survived, and statistically at least a few of them have to be more females, and dragons will be fewer than before, certainly, and it will be centuries before they reach their previous numbers, but they won’t be doomed to a drawn-out spiral of inbreeding and decline and eventual, final, end.

And then she forgets.

Temporarily! But the memory is removed, excised for her protection and the protection of that precious maybe-future. Saphira’s view of the world, of herself, of her very place in the world, is completely overthrown… and then she returns to what had been the status quo (admittedly with the souls of several other dragons—but functionally this is just Glaedr, multiplied).

The question I pose is: what happened to Saphira’s true name?

On a broader, more generalized scale, the question really is this: what happens to a true name when the memory of a major name-changing event is altered somehow—either by removing the memory of an event that happened, or implanting a false memory of an event that did not happen, or changing the elements of that memory? What rule of the Ancient Language applies here—belief, or The Words Themselves? Is a true name built on memory? On how life experience physically shapes the brain?

Does Saphira wonder at the giddiness in her chest when she thinks of the Eldunarya, quietly thinking that the instinctive chemical reaction is an overenthusiastic response to ghosts that can advise, but never repopulate?

Would Galbatorix, if the battle had gone differently, have been intrigued by the curious lack of I am the last in Saphira’s true name?

Or would he have seen exactly what he expected to? I am the last—and hope is lost.

i always hate when people say thag the uchihas are more sensitive because theyre predisposed to mental illness as if theyre dramatic or respond disjointedly from their circumstances. im inclined to say theyre some of the only characters who behave believably in accordance with their trauma. like sasuke was literally psychologically tortured when he was 13. do we think thats gonna turn someone into a football loving go getter? they use characters whose trauma barely gets shown as a standard when its not that the uchiha are dramatic but that naruto just doesnt get much focus on the trauma that he should undeniably have.

Setting where fated mates or soul bonds or permanent marks are a thing? "Meh. I don't really want one or care if I ever get one."

People in the actual omegaverse would get as bored of their stuff, as we do of ours, you know? It could be interesting to see that kind of vibe in fics. Biological demands faced with all the excitement of paying bills or doing laundry or tying your shoes.

Even if that kind of energy might not drive a plot, it could be interesting to have as a contrast to the people who do have big feelings about them - good or bad.

There's the friends who can't wait til they have a pack of their own, and the one friend who isn't against it but couldn't care less. There's the group in the office who are all about scent compatibility tests and figuring out one's best match and what sprays most highlight it, and the coworker who has no intentions on putting that much effort in. There are parents who hover and protect their offspring by scenting them multiple times a day, and others who don't see what the fuss is as long as it's done in the morning.

...also: packs with introverts who show care by giving each other space. So often, closeness is depicted through physical touch and tactile affection, but comfortable silence is meaningful too. Knowing people are near, but not having to interact until you're ready. Sitting in the same room doing different things, knowing that all it takes is a "hey, look at this" to share what you're up to. People understanding and accepting each other's differing or fluctuating needs for how and when to recharge. Seeing somebody reaching out or sharing space, beyond what's their norm, as a signal of the fact that they care.

Like okay I know what the sex scene in season one was supposed to represent, just putting that out there as a precursor because yes I KNOW.

I know it was a representation of Jayce metaphorically and literally being seduced to politics. I know it was meant to be about Jayce choosing Mel over Viktor and stepping away from their previous vision. (I like to joke that it was a scene of Jayce 'Cheating on their Hextech dream' lmao)

But here's the thing.

They DID NOT need to make that a sex scene. They did not need to intersperse the scene of Viktor rejecting Sky and then almost dying throughout it. Like. It drives me insane because yes it was artsy, yes it was kinda fun from a film and animation enjoyer perspective but by symbolically adding a third character into the scene it creates a tension between, if not both, at least one of the two characters having sex.

The animators def knew that but I find it deeply dubious that the writers didn't also know this as well (at least, the competent ones). SUBTEXT and symbolism matter omg.

I miss the way I used to overwhelmingly ramble my love for/on fic(s). How I had all the words at my disposal and feelings just bubbling at the surface waiting to be shared. Showing my absolute awe, appreciation, and love for them.

Anymore, it just feels like the well is empty, and there's just never anything to scoop out. Nothing to translate my feelings into. Just nothing nothing nothing. And that makes me sad most of all.
