[TLDR: me attempting to make sense of the Arcane's eldritchness, which sounds ironic in hindsight but hear me out]
Revelation after revelation aside, there are many pieces of foreshadowing that tell us why Viktor's commune wasn't as great as it seemed.
Visually speaking, all the clues are right there.
The first thing we see of the slums of Zaun is this.
Vi, leading their little group, is astonished to find such a thingâand to think that Huck was there, serving as one of its ushers! Huck, who she immediately calls a filthy traitor; having succumbed to shimmer the last time she saw himâmeaning he'd turned to Silco both literally and figurativelyâwhat with his use of the drug and the fact that he'd ratted her and Caitlyn out to the tycoon.
Miss Ma'am is bamboozled.
How the hell did he end up there? At this...paradise? At the slums, which, only a few weeks or months ago; was still dark, dusty, violet, and violent!
Something has changed, obviously; and Huck himself admits that his past was him 'at his worst'. Simply awful. But the Herald had saved him. And because of that, he was leading a better life, now. Naturally, at this point, Vi and Jinx seem wary.
There's gotta be a catch, no?
The landscape and the characters exemplify this.
Let's start with the land itself. Look at how empty it actually looks. Yes, there's a field of flowers. Yes, there's a community, teeming with life. Yes, it's literally heaven. But the lighting. The colours. It's so...bleak. Like a dream. The mountains are green, but they're cast in grey and white; and added with the negative space, there's an eeriness to it that contrasts Piltover's version of an eutopia.
You can argue it being the vast resource difference, as Topside is the superior city for a reason, but the commune is still filled with numerous individuals with just as much creativity as their counterparts. Intelligent and sentient beingsâpeople, with minds to set to whatever task may be at hand.
Now, let's think of the people.
The biggest difference between the two communities is this: the 'healed' of Viktor's paradise wear only one mode of dress: white. It's almost uniformâwhich is notable, as, previously in the episode, Viktor speaks of 'chaos'. We see how fascinated he was by the mess that Vander's psyche had become, and in an attempt at detangling that chaos, he was 'setting things right' inside the man's mind. Bringing him back to something resembling normalcy. Order.
This is particularly significant for the fact that, in the game, he's remembered for his philosophy on glorious evolution (also mentioned in the show, as we know)âwhich is centred on the enhancement of the human body to transcend its fleshly limits.
Piltover, in contrastâand by extension the 'unhealed' of Zaunâgo against this code. We see shimmer addicts, we see corrupt individuals, we see bigoted populations, we see conflict between the cities. We see human nature at its finest. Even the episode titles, all the way from Season 1, display this.
S1E1: Welcome to the Playground S1E2: Some Mysteries are Better Left Unsolved S1E3: The Base Violence Necessary for Change S1E4: Happy Progress Day! S1E5: Everybody Wants to Be My Enemy S1E6: When These Walls Come Tumbling Down S1E7: The Boy Saviour S1E8: Oil and Water S1E9: The Monster You Created S2E1: Heavy is the Crown S2E2: Watch It All Burn S2E3: Finally Got the Name Right S2E4: Paint the Town Blue S2E5: Blisters and Bedrock S2E6: The Message Hidden Within the Pattern
Again, human nature. Colourful, tumultuous, unsynchronised. A need for knowledge. A need for violence. A need for change. A need for exploration. A need for control. Everything that we can have, we take.
That's the point of Viktor's quote:
I understand now. The message hidden within the pattern. The reason for our failures in the commune. The doctor was rightâit's inescapable. Humanity. Our very essence. Our emotionsârage, compassion, hate. Two sides of the same coin, inextricably bound. That which inspires us to our greatest good is also the cause of our greatest evil.
It's a paradox.
This is a sophisticated conjuration. A singularity, simultaneously self-replicating and self-annihilating.
He wasn't just talking about the Arcane. It wasn't just about that 'voice' he and Sky heard when gazing at Jayce through Salo's eyes. It's also about humanity.
So, how does that relate to his commune?
Here's the thing: it looks like heaven, but later on, when Viktor dies and everyone else follows, it's practically limbo. It's liminal. Initially, you only have the vague sense that there's something off about it, but you can't tell what. It's filled with people, yet at the same time, it looks like it shouldn't have any to begin with. Mysterious. Suspicious. Almost dreadful; something that makes you realise: if you think about it too hard, you'd drive yourself insane.
There's something intrinsically natural about the commune, something untouched by human hands; but there's also something intrinsically human about it, something unnatural, cultivated in a way nature itself cannot replicate. That's the catch. It should be a balance of both. An ideal community would show this.
Viktor's connection to the Hexcore tells us that he's, in part, transcended both humanity and the natural world. He's breached the ineffable and the incomprehensible, and brought it into the existence(s) of those who could know of and experience it. Bringing 'paradise' to those who were never meant to realise what it was. Forcing onto them the Arcane, even when done with the best intentions.
For the suffering Zaunites, they have everything they could possibly want: food, water, shelter, rest, belonging, peace, survival; the life that they once could only dream of having. It's perfect. They don't have to be in pain, not anymore.
But the commune is isolated. This is very much seen in the gate symbolism: all are welcome, but once inside, you'll never want to leave. You'll never have to. Because to be cured by the hands of the Herald means to bear his mark. To be saved is to bind yourself to him.
The open archway is also a taunt: the gate is open, it'll always be open, but would you ever risk going back out? Would you really trade this for anything else?
Are you truly willing to leave paradise? Are you truly willing to part with the Arcane?
The Arcane, which had given them everything they'd yearned for through Viktor.
Now, see here: Vi catches a glimpse of Singed exiting Viktor's abode. It's presumably the healing tent, as his main 'bubble' (the place where he 'recharges', so to speak) is the one in the distance.
The point is: Vi sees Singed leave the healing tent. What makes this suspicious is the fact that the man left unhealed.
Note that, prior to this point, the sisters have reconciled and were even willing to stay in this little underground haven despite their initial scepticisms. They, just like everyone else, have been lulled into the comfort the commune provided. So, to see someone else suddenly exiting Viktor's watchâsomeone with no traces of the Herald's touch, someone who's still bandaged and deformedâis a wake-up call.
Why else would you go into the healing tent, to the commune, if not to have yourself cured or seek respite? Why is this man, who'd obviously be easier work to deal with compared to Vander, not 'saved'?
Vi follows him. Then, Singed leaves the commune entirely.
In her eyes, someone had willingly turned away from 'paradise'.
Logically, this begs the question: Why?
Because that's where the fantasy ends.
Right as Vi comes to the gate, the camera cuts to that Noxian spear upfront. A threat to the 'perfection' that existed within the borders. A reminder that the world outside still exists; a world that Viktor hasn't touched in its entirety, a world that still begs to be saved, a world that is still human at its core brimming and simmering.
That's the reason Viktor's named a herald: he's an omen. He'd brought about a transformation to those he healed. To the slums. Providing a drastic shift in people's lives (or whatever 'life' still counted for those he'd influenced) that left many devastated when Jayce blew a hole in his chest.
By spreading the use of the Arcane through other agents (again, the 'healed'), he essentially reproduced the effects of the power that he had at his disposal, while at the same time allowed himself to better comprehend how the Arcane workedâand by extension, allowed that very power to adapt.
But at the same time, he himself is also the key to undoing it.
From Jayce and Ekko, S2E3:
Viktor hypothesised that there may be something he called 'wild runes'. Patterns that occur naturally when the border between our world and the Arcane is thin. Runes like the ones you use in Hextech. What's the difference between those and wild runes? Pass me a tome. So, I used words you understood in order to elicit your action. This is what Hextech runes are. Pass me a tome. Pass me a tome! Thereâyou sighed. Still a kind of language. A sound, but not words. Something raw; natural. That's wild runes. In most places, the Arcane is dormantâbut here and there, it's more active. Wild runes areâ âsort of like its fingerprints. Exactly! ...so, you're telling me: that pattern is on my tree, because you pissed the Arcane off with all your demands?
Viktor being infused with the Hexcoreâwhich we can reasonably assume is a wild rune, as can also be seen with its matrixâmakes it so that he himself acts as what a Hextech rune would do to it (the Hexcore). Through Viktor, the Arcane is refined, and in a process that doesn't completely destabilise (compared to pure Hextech, as can be seen with the weapons). For Viktor to lose control or to be harmed means making that magic either go wild (the weapons) or make it dissipate (the commune).
That's why the fantasy 'ends' at the entrance of the commune: anything past that is out of Viktor's reach, and remains 'untouched' by the Arcane.
From Jinx, S1E5:
So, all about these runes: they form some sort of mathy, magicky gateway...to the realm of heebie-jeebies. And this turns it on!
Say it again: the runes make a gateway. The Hexcore was a rune matrix, an array of wild runes that formed a singular entity. An entity which is now 'one' with Viktor. It means being the 'Herald' is also being the 'gateway' for the Arcane. The traditional role of a herald is to proclaim and carry messages; we don't know what message the Arcane itself wants to send, but we do know for a fact that Viktor is at least doing its work in creating that commune in the slums of Zaun.
From Singed, S1E6 & S2E6:
The mutation must survive. You must survive, Viktor.
The Machine Herald himself is self-replicating and self-annihilating. He can 'cure' the afflicted, thus infusing the Arcane into other individuals and replicating its structure inside them. And at the same time, the Arcane is also what 'kills' himâwith Jayce using (what looked to be a mutated version of) the hexcrystal of his hammer to blow through Viktor's chest, where we know the Hexcore was placed during Jayce's revival of him in Act 1.
This is why the commune, despite its purpose as a safe haven, also exists as a place of great danger. Why it really isn't all Thatâą, even despite Viktor creating it as a safe space for many.
See this exchange between Vi and Jinx:
This place...do you think it could actually work? Underground utopia, run by a skinny tin Machine Herald. Maybe when Piltover slides into the Sump.
Jinx was right in calling it for what it is, despite the words being in jest. A utopia. Working 'when Piltover slides into the Sump'.
It's an impractical scheme. Too perfect. Too good to be true.
An impossibility.
Do you believe in fate, Doctor? Our paths carved before us. Guided by an invisible hand? Not fate. Evolution. Nature's greatest force, forever in flux. No. Evolution has a destination. Not to combat nature, but to supersede it. The final, glorious evolution. But he isn't a specimenâhe's a man. And he needs my help. I will not sacrifice his humanity for your cause. You may leave. Very well. But I assume you understand already: if you perish, this community is soon to follow.
Viktor understands. He understands. He just wasn't ready to admit it to himself when Singed said it.
I understand now. The message hidden within the pattern. The reason for our failures in the commune. The doctor was rightâit's inescapable. Humanity.
Human nature and human essence aren't self-sustaining. That's why the Arcane was so effective in 'healing' all those people. Their humanity hampered them from healing themselves; both in the sense of the human bodily condition (the limits of the physical self), and in the sense of humaneness (of empathy, of choice). The human body cannot survive its own traumas without an artificial means of a cure (case in point: Vander). And the Arcane acted as its solution.
Mere instinct doesn't let you liveâyou need to learn how to direct your life after survival. To adapt. To grow. Humanity, self-replicating and self-annihilating; the escape from that cycle, that's the glorious evolution Viktor speaks of.
A utopia. Impossible and impractical. Humanity: that which inspires us to our greatest good, and the cause of our greatest evil.

This an interesting angle. I've never been particularly taken with trying to determine True Art from False Art on the basis of specific qualities of the piece.
(I did ok-ish but not exceptionally on the AI art quiz, probably with a slight bias for misattributing human pieces as AI ones - like many other respondees, I found the Impressionist pieces hardest to distinguish, since they very much play to the AI's strengths.)
There are many different ways you could describe "art" as a human activity, I'm sure there's a post somewhere where I make a list, but a really big one is its communicative function - one purpose of art is to somehow pass on some aspect of our 'inner world' to another person, through a lossy and limited channel.
That a signal can be easily imitated doesn't mean it doesn't carry contextual information. For example, I could ask a yes/no question of enormous emotional importance - "should I take the shot", "has the baby been born", "will you go out with me", "am I a good girl" - and be answered with either "yes" or "no". It would be trivial to generate a machine which randomly substitutes for this communication - that's basically all a magic eight-ball is.
The amount of information that can be contained in an image of a given size and colour depth can also be calculated. For example, the number of fullscreen images that would fill my current monitor at 8 bits per channel would be 2^(3440 Ă 1440 Ă 24) â 3 Ă 10^35788372 - about 15 megabytes uncompressed. It's a number that seems astronomically huge, though effectively the amount of information is much less than you'd calculate since all the likely pixels are correlated. The same goes for other art forms, like novels (encoded as, say, UTF-8 strings or PDFs) or pieces of music (encoded as sound files, MIDI, MuseScore files, etc.). The exact number is complicated, you end up getting into Kolmogorov complexity and shit like that, but the point is that it's finite.
If we want to claim that all the information about a human life that Hofstadter describes (grief, despair etc.) is in there somehow, we're claiming that this finitely many bits is adequate to capture all the nuances of a human life. I don't know that that's true!
This, however, doesn't really seem to align with how we interact with art. Human production and exchange of "art" is a social act - I would describe it as being continuous with "play". When we observe a piece, we are opening a communications channel - at least a one-way channel. The person on the other side sends some information into the channel, and we process it somehow.
Since it is a lossy channel with limited information, we must infer various things about the other mind on the opposite side of it. If I show you an artwork that I made, we might have a conversation about how I did it, why I made the choices I did. If I feel something looking at the work, I might imagine that you felt something similar, and designed the piece to evoke it intentionally (a guess that will often be wrong but sometimes still productive). I might also look at what specific choices you have made, compare them to the choices others have made in the same medium, etc etc.
We form these inferences on the basis of experience - the more you learn about making art, the more you learn to appreciate other peoples' art and vice versa. And we project these experiences, usually plausibly, onto other artists.
(Perhaps I am saying all art is in a sense performance art? Seems like a tasty soundbite, though I'm not fully sure I wanna commit to it.)
I'm not meaning to claim that a computer couldn't simulate this kind of 'how did you make it' interaction too. This line of argument was anticipated by Turing in his original 1950 paper on the 'imitation game' that someone links in the comments above, where he describes a poet undergoing a viva voce test interrogating their word choices, and argues that a computer might be programmed to give convincing answers to such a test. I imagine he's right - for a paper written in 1950 he makes some surprisingly sharp predictions for how future AIs might be made, such as the idea that an AI could be built to be 'educated' like a child. (He also thought the evidence for ESP is 'overwhelming', but hey, can't win 'em all).
A lot of the context around art would be quite easy to forge, had you a mind to. For example, suppose I go to a film screening, and someone is introduced as the director so we can all clap them. Did they really direct it? I don't know! You could totally send an actor. Less conspiratorially, if someone says they made an artistic choice for x or y reason, they could be lying about it, or misremembering, or most likely oversimplifying a complex and inscrutable process down to a simpler story.
At some point you have to take something like that on trust, or else simply accept that being lied to about it is part of the game you're there to play! (c.f. Oshi no Ko.)
Anyway, the sudden arrival of a new process that can produce, at least sometimes, near-indistinguishable output to various types of communication, throws a spanner in the process. If we're feeling uncharitable, we could call it something like a DDOS attack, stuffing the channels with spurious inputs that don't fit our design assumptions. I think that goes too far, though. AI gen doesn't preclude communication, but it does need we need to think differently about what is being communicated.[1]
So to consider that last question, if art is like a game, could you train an AI art to produce art that is meaningful to humans only by 'playing against' itself, like AlphaGo Zero? I don't think this is so likely. The rules of Go are strict and well-defined; the rules of what humans find meaningful are inseparable from the history of interacting with other humans, which is why art constantly evolves. Training an AI on existing human artworks is training it to compress and interpolate/extrapolate that dataset; training it to optimise for "making novel art that expresses something in a form that its interlocutor could understand" requires it to be interacting with someone.
You could imagine a training process with an "artist" AI and a "critic" AI (a sort of more sophisticated GAN, where the adversary is optimising not to distinguish human/AI art but to judge it on aesthetic grounds) - but how would you get the "critic" AI? Whose taste would it express?
Admittedly, the developers of image generators are constantly refining their models in response to users, so they are being optimised to appeal to someone, not just interpolate existing artworks. But I think it would be very hard to remove humans from the equation entirely. And the present means of providing feedback to the AI are very crude.
For an AI to learn from interacting with other AI (and the world), I feel like you'd need a whole new process that isn't about minimising loss against input-output pairs. Romantically, I imagine it would be closer to how humans learn from life, but I don't really know what will 'work' in the end.
below: some other remarks that were excised from the main post.
[1] We can view AI image gen as another channel for communication between humans, with its own set of inferences to make. If someone shows me a picture they've generated with AI, there's no point asking why they painted this bit that way, but I might approach them more as a curator and ask why they chose this generation over others, or how they went about prompting it.
The AI artists who go to the trouble of finetuning their models with LoRAs for a specific end goal, or using more involved processes with multiple stages of generation, probably have most to 'say', either through the work they generate or how they'd discuss it. (I find it very endearing when someone trains an AI to serve up a hyperspecific fetish.) And the more I know about how AI images are generated, the more I can probably have a productive conversation.
In this light, the "problem" of AI is mostly one of deception, insofar as it tries to look like something else and thereby tell a misleading story. That's probably a big reason why why it brings the rancour it does, although it doesn't explain all of it. It's not (usually) a forgery of a specific human's work, but it is designed to forge spurious communications in this channel in general, so the channel is 'noisier' - and this could be thought to undermine many of the contexts, i.e. the operating narratives and social games, which are why we exchange art in the first place. Over time, we'll presumably end up renegotiating the 'games', and spawning new ones, as humans always have.
And of course, the issue of provenance and plagiarism in art - particularly when prestige and money get involved - long predates AI and is full of all sorts of bizarre contortions when you look at it closely.
More intriguing is whether there is some possibility for "real communication" between humans and AIs - that is, could there be an AI output that does respect the 'rules of the game' in some way. This is harder to imagine! Like, if you ask why we aren't solipsists, we could point to how much we resemble other humans and say, all things considered, seems very unlikely we aren't the same type of entity. But I only know 'what it's like to be' a human. Conversely, while I know a reasonable amount about how AIs work, the attention mechanism and latent-space vectors and so on (thanks 3blue1brown), the analogy isn't so clear anymore, so I don't even know how I'd determine whether there even is a 'what is it like to be' under all the 'noise' of communications aggressively optimised to fit the patterns of something a human might say. If there is, it's probably very alien to all of my experience.
Ironically I feel like the current model of 'AI', which teaches us to regard any generated output with suspicion of having 'nothing behind it', would make it harder for any 'real', agentive, subjective-experience-having AI to make itself known to us. But perhaps it's good that we're forced to sharpen our criteria of what we're looking for out of these things.
Anyway, all of this is probably just idle imaginings, because nobody can figure out how to make anything like enough money to justify the exorbitant costs of training and operating AIs, so at some point this whole speculative bubble will go up in smoke and whatever AIs continue to be in use will likely remain about as good as they are today, or stupider - at least until the next 'AI summer' when a new paradigm emerges.
Thinking about that that "slop accelerationism" post, and also Scott's AI art Turing test.
I also hope AI text- and image-generation will help shake us loose from cheap bad art. For example, the fact that you can now generate perfectly rendered anime girls at the click of button kindof suggests that there was never much content in those drawings. Though maybe we didn't really need AI for that insight? It feels very similar to that shift in fashion that rejected Bouguereau-style laboriously-rendered pretty girls in favor of more sketchy brush work.
But will we really be so lucky that only things that we already suspected was slop will prove valueless?
As usual with AI, Douglas Hofstadter already thought about this a long time ago, in an essay from 2001. Back in 1979 he had written
Will a computer program ever write beautiful music? Speculation: Yes, but not soon. Music is a language of emotions, and until programs have emotions as complex as ours, there is no way a program will write anything beautiful. There can be "forgeries"âshallow imitations of the syntax of earlier musicâbut despite what one might think at first, there is much more to musical expression than can be captured in syntactical rules. There will be no new kinds of beauty turned up for a long time by computer music-composing programs. Let me carry this thought a little further. To thinkâand I have heard this suggestedâthat we might soon be able to command a preprogrammed mass-produced mail-order twenty-dollar desk-model "music box" to bring forth from its sterile [sic!] circuitry pieces which Chopin or Bach might have written had they lived longer is a grotesque and shameful misestimation of the depth of the human spirit. A "program" which could produce music as they did would have to wander around the world on its own, fighting its way through the maze of life and feeling every moment of it. It would have to understand the joy and loneliness of a chilly night wind, the longing for a cherished hand, the inaccessibility of a distant town, the heartbreak and regeneration after a human death. It would have to have known resignation and world-weariness, grief and despair, determination and victory, piety and awe. In it would have had to commingle such opposites as hope and fear, anguish and jubilation, serenity and suspense. Part and parcel of it would have to be a sense of grace, humor, rhythm, a sense of the unexpected and of course an exquisite awareness of the magic of fresh creation. Therein, and therein only, lie the sources of meaning in music.
I think this is helpful in pinning down what we would have liked to be true. Because in 1995, somebody wrote a program that generates music by applying simple syntactic rules to combine patterns from existing pieces, and it sounded really good! (In fact, it passed a kind of AI turing test.) Oops!
The worry, then, is that we just found out that the computer has as complex emotions as us, and they aren't complex at all. It would be like adversarial examples for humans: the noise-like pattern added to the panda doesn't "represent" a gibbon, it's an artifact of the particular weights and topology of the image recognizer, and the resulting classification doesn't "mean" anything. Similarly, Arnulf Rainer wrote that when he reworked Wine-Crucifix, "the quality and truth of the picture only grew as it became darker and darker"âdoesn't this sound a bit like gradient descent? Did he stumble on a pattern that triggers our "truth" detector, even though the pattern is merely a shallow stimulus made of copies of religious iconography that we imprinted on as kids?
One attempt to recover is to say Chopin really did write music based on the experience of fighting through the maze of life, and it's just that philistine consumers can't tell the difference between the real and the counterfeit. But this is not very helpful, it means that we were fooling ourselves, and the meaning that we imagined never existed.
More promising, maybe the program is a "plagiarism machine", which just copies the hard-won grief, despair, world-weariness &c that Chopin recorded? On it's own it's not impressive that a program can output an image indistinguishable from Gauguin's, I can write such a program in a single line:
print("https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gauguin,Paul-Still_Life_with_Profile_of_Laval-_Google_Art_Project.jpg")
I think this is the conclusion that Hofstadter leans towards: the value of Chopin and the other composers was to discover the "template" that can then be instantiated to make many beautiful music pieces. Kind of ironically, this seems to push us back to some very turn-of-the-20th-century notion of avant-garde art. Each particular painting that (say) Monet executed is of low value, and the actual valuable thing is the novel art style...
That view isn't falsified yet, but it feels precarious. You could have said that AlphaGo was merely a plagiarism machine that selected good moves from historical human games, except then AlphaGo Zero proved that the humans were superfluous after all. Surely a couple of years from now somebody might train an image model on a set of photographs and movies excluding paintings, and it might reinvent impressionism from first principles, and then where will we be? Better start prepare a fallback-philosophy now.

Its been 6 monthsđđ pleaasseeee make a part 2 of the android x human story im begginggggđ
-Hâ€ïž
Yandere! Android x Reader (II)
Featuring your assigned android partner who is not as devoid of humanity as you originally thought.
Content: female reader, AI yandere, mildly NSFW, based on Caves of Steel
[Part 1] | [More original works]
The case had been solved.
Not only that, but you'd managed to prove that human officers were just as efficient as their robot counterparts. The Commissioner was beyond ecstatic, pacing back and forth in his office and finding new ways to praise your detective skills.
"That'll show those Spacers. They think some glorified tin box can match our skill?"
You frowned at his words and glanced to your side, where the android was sitting. He observed the Commissioner with the same polite smile, no hint of disagreement on his features. Was he not insulted? You questioned him once the formal meeting had finished.
"I have no reason to be offended, (Y/N). It is a personal opinion, and thus I have no control over it."
"So you don't mind people disliking robots to such an extent?"
He pondered your statement.
"I would certainly be upset if it was you who harbored the disdain. The beliefs of other humans hold no meaning to me otherwise."
You couldn't tell if he said it out of politeness, or if he actually meant it. Most likely the former, in order to part on good terms. After all, your partnership has reached its completion. He'd return to the Spacer Colony with his report on human customs, and you'd go back to your regular job.
Except he never left. Days later, he was still sipping on his morning coffee, lounging at your table. You fiddled with your cup in contemplation. Was there anything else left to do?
"When are you leaving, actually?"
The pale man raised his eyebrows in mild surprise.
"Is my presence here of such significant disturbance?"
"What? No!" you swiftly exclaimed, stumbling on your words. His lips widened in yet another cheeky grin. He was teasing you again.
"My assignment on Earth is done, thus I should have returned to the Colony already. That's what you're wondering about, yes? I am awaiting a response from my superiors."
"Whether you can go back?"
"No, whether my transfer has been accepted. I have applied to be your permanent partner."
You could feel your cheeks burning with heat. Was it that obvious to the synthetic that you enjoyed his company? Then again, he wouldn't have gone through such motions just for your sake.
"Why did you..." you probed sheepishly. There was no logical reason for him to keep working in a poorer, less advanced environment.
"Because I want to continue spending time with you."
Nonsense. An artificial being wouldn't make its decision based on such mundane, emotional reasons.
"I don't believe you."
"I understand. It is a faulty answer to come out of a machine. Though unlike common AI assistants, we have been invested with the capacity to develop likes and dislikes. Interests. Wants. It helps with variety and individualization."
"And you want to stay here? If I didn't know you any better, I'd say you have a crush on me or something", you attempted to joke.
A few moments of uncomfortable silence. Had you gone too far with your humor? Was it too cliché of a sentence? You turned away, tucking some strands of hair behind your ear. You just had to be witty, huh?
"I'm afraid I do not know what to tell you, (Y/N)."
"You don't need to say anything, it was a poor choice of-"
"Many social aspects have been implemented into my behavioral network. Workplace rapport, friendships, intimate relationships. What seems to be lacking is the transition from one to another. I know how to act as a romantic partner, but how does one achieve such a title in the first place?"
You gazed at him, incredulous. What was he trying to say?
"I am trying to convey that I am indeed infatuated with you. Which, then, makes my initial explanation dishonest: while I do appreciate our fruitful work cooperation, it is not a main reason for my decision. I hope this clears up any misunderstandings."
You'd never been a romantic. You sometimes flipped through sample pages of contemporary romance books at stores and community centers, but they always felt forcefully cheesy. Predictable. Consequently, you never had any grand dreams of passionate confessions under the rain.
On the other hand, you also didn't expect to be asked out in such a mechanical, calculated manner. Or that a machine would be the suitor. Yet there was something charming about his approach. For the first time since meeting him at the border, you saw him struggle. There was something human-like in his uncertainty.
You stood up from the table, and walked towards the android. Then, you placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder, expressing the mutual feeling and understanding.
His eyes bore an eerie glint to them. It was most kind of you to offer a common ground, but he knew better. The affections you held for him were, with utmost certainty, a mere fraction of whatever overwhelmed him from the moment he encountered you. Limerence, obsession, compulsion, there were many definitions that aptly described his otherwise unexplainable desires towards you. Even more unexplainable was the fact they'd evolved from a blank slate, a programmed agent with no previous knowledge on feelings or humans.
You noticed his hesitation.
"Is there anything else troubling you presently?" you nudged.
Nothing of immediate urgency. Well, not for you, at least. The android remained thoughtful. What were the variables which needed to be met in order to initiate a sexual encounter? Would it have been inappropriate for him to suggest intercourse straight after this conversation? To him, it was a natural escalation he'd considered many times in the past. To you, it could've come as a sudden, crass, and hurried proposal.
He reached for your wrist and discreetly pressed a thumb against your skin. Judging from your resting heart rate, facial expression, and localized temperature, there was a fair chance you wouldn't reject his advances. Once the statistical risk had been assessed, he pulled you in for a kiss.
"Would it be possible to continue this in your bedroom?" he inquired, standing up.
"Alright, just don't...ask for approval for every single step" you retorted. You'd rather not become a narrator of your own pounding.
You open your eyes with a squint, greeted by unexpected natural light flooding your bedroom. Someone mustâve lifted the hologram blinds.
âMy apologies, I hadnât considered the discomfort it would cause you. My Spacer colony uses artificial lightning, though I am becoming rather fond of the natural sun rays here.â
Your android partner is meticulously preparing his outfit for the day. Judging by the stark nakedness and the glistening skin, you suppose heâs had a shower while you were still sleeping. You involuntarily furrow your brows and blush at the sight. He notices your embarrassment.Â
âA most surprising reaction. You have seen the very same genital organâŠâ, he says as he quickly checks his wristwatch, â...precisely eight hours and forty-five minutes ago.â
âItâs justâŠmost people get dressed once they start doing other things. I also wear a towel for coverage when I come out of the shower.â
He processes your words.
âHmmm. Illogical, but it explains your reaction.â
You stand up and stretch with a prolonged yawn. Suddenly, a revelation hits you: your mind flashes with images of the android fondling your body, your ears ring with the shameless moans youâve let out throughout the night. Your face turns pale.
âListen, when is your next functional inspection?â you ask, without waiting for the synthetic to answer. âWill they, uhâŠwill they have access to all of your memories?â
You know that the android permanently records all data and saves it into a memory unit. Itâs a pointless fear, of course. The Spacers couldnât care less about irrelevant details. If the intended tasks are fulfilled, what happens on the side is out of their concern. Yet you donât exactly appreciate the possibility of your personal deeds airing like this, before the eyes of multiple engineers.Â
âYou may rest assured, whatever involves your privacy will not be included in the examination.â
âDo you get to decide what is checked and what isnât?â
âNo, most data is sampled randomly.â
You stare at him, confused.
âThen how-â
âIt is not common practice, nor encouraged by our code of ethics. I can, however, choose which information is available to begin with.â
âWhat? I thought youâre fully controlled by whoever created you. If they so desired, couldnât they open you up and take whatever they require?â
The robot smiles at your assumption and takes a few steps towards you.
âOnce an android model is finished, one can no longer modify the processor. Not without compromising everything else with it. It is not a device to be deconstructed, (Y/N).â He taps his temple, then continues: âI am a biocomputer. While most of my parts are mechanical, my processor is a cortical organoid developed in a laboratory. A human brain, if you will.â
Somehow, the discovery fills you with dread. A living organ, encapsulated within a machine. What does that say about consciousness? About self-awareness? The Spacers didn't just tinker with metal scraps and smart computers. They artificially birthed life.
You were always under the impression that your robot companion is closer to the computer you have on your desk. Billions of lines of code within a black box, which then lead to spontaneous, novel interactions with the outside world. To think that at the very core of his functions lies a clump of living cells...
Perhaps you weren't so different, after all. The line between machines and humans is suddenly blurred.

Talking to Batboy
First | Previous | Next
"Do you want to talk?" Dick asked sitting at the end of the bed.
Danny had been spared from the memories of that night but it had done nothing for his mental health. He was handling the loss of his wings well at least. Although losing a limb was still not a good feeling.
But that isn't the problem. None of this is the problem.
The problem wasâŠ
"Why me?" Danny asked tucking his legs to his chest.
"What?" Dick asked confused.
"What made me so special? Was it just my wings?" Danny narrowed his eyes.
"I...don't know. I just wanted-"
"That's not an answer! It was the wings, wasn't y You don't care about me! Of course, it was the wings!" Danny jumped off the bed and moved towards the door.
"Danny, is it so hard to believe that I wanted you because I cared?" Dick grabbed Danny's hand pulling him back.
"Yes! This city is full of poor unfortunate orphans. The only reason I was special was because of how I looked. But that's not real! That's not what I am." Danny shifted, and his real appearance began shifting across his body. "BUT YOU DON'T WANT TO SEE THE REAL ME!
Danny started to hyperventilate as he pulled back until he hit the wall. He slumped to the floor.
"I don't belong here. I should never have come here." Danny said to himself.
Dick keeled down and spoke gently.
"Your right you did stand out. I thought you were a lot like me. Optimistic and energetic despite the pain you were in. I didn't know what you were and I still don't understand. I wish you'd just tell me so I can understand. I want to help you."
Danny scoffed.
"You want to help me?" He laughed taking off his shirt and letting his glamour fall showing the scars he had.
The lightning scar that ripped through his arm and chest all the way to his eye. The burn marks and blast marks littered his body. The unmistakable dissection scar.
In that moment Dick knew that he hadn't seen himself in Danny. He had seen Jason. Sweet little Jason who has a light in the night. His little brother who he hadn't treasured enough until he was gone.
"DannyâŠyou.." He was lost for words.
"You don't want me. Even my parents didn't want me. Honestly, you are all the same. You don't see me as what I am. Just a monster. Not human." Danny grumbled.
"That's not true Danny! Stop trying to put words in my mouth! I love you, is that so hard to believe?" Dick held Danny's shoulders as the teen pushed him back.
"Yes! Now get away!" Danny phased through Dick and flew away to escape. He couldn't handle this right now.
Wings or no wings he could still fly. That was comfort enough.
He flew as quickly as he could only to end up in Crime Alley again. As eerie as it was it gave him a place to collect his thoughts.
Unfortunately, he forgot it was home to the relevant Red Hood or Jason. His unwitting family member. That was no longer a secret especially when Jason recognized him as Phantom. At least he didn't tell everyone.
He didn't want them to know the truth. He didn't want to be an undead monster to them. He couldn't go through that again. He refused. He'd rather return to the realms before suffering that again.
When Jason came (probably sensing his presence) Danny felt overcome with emotions. He hugged Jason feeling a little less alone.
"Hey, Spooks. What are you doing out here?" Jason asked letting the boy hug him.
"IâŠpicked a fight with Dick," Danny said embarrassed with how he actedâŠagain.
"First time?" Jason laughed "Trust me as his kid you probably will do that plenty more times. I know I still do with my ol'man. But Dick isn't like Bats. He loves differently. Although they both care too much, Dick is good at communication. Just talk to him."
Jason seemed more jovial now. Less pained. Apparently, now that the Joker was dead and gone a weight was taken off him. That and the tainted ectoplasm being eaten by Danny.
"I don't think I can," Danny said, what he wanted to do was run away. He may have gotten too deep into this. Maybe returning was the best thing.
"Then you sure chose the worst possible guardian. He's gonna keep looking. He did not going to stop either. So sucking it up and facing him is the best possible route." Jason laughed as Danny sighed. "You can't keep running."
"I can try." Danny thought bitterly. He could just rip open a portal and disappear. No one would know.
"Red Hood. Danny." A third voice entered the conversation.
"Batman." Jason scowled.
"I was sent to look for Danny." He said simply. "He should be focused on healing."
"How'd you find me this fast?" Danny gripped rolling his eyes.
"I had a feeling. Come along, Danny. " Batman reached out to Danny.
Reluctantly Danny waved goodbye to Red Hood and took Bruce's hand.
Bruce didn't take Danny home immediately. Instead, they climbed one of the tallest buildings in Gotham. Danny stared up at the sky. The stars were blocked out by the light and smoke. He always hated that part of Gotham.
"Danny look down," Batman said urging Danny to sit with him.
Looking down the city shined. Each light is like a blazing star.
"Each light you see is a person. Despite how difficult life is here they still choose to live their lives." Batman said. "They don't know if they will be safe but they still strive for more."
"Do they really think that or do you just hope they do?" Danny barked clinically.
"Both. It wasn't always like this. The city used to be dead silent before I became Batman. Now they have the strength to fight back even in the night. That's why I do this. So Danny, why do you fight?"
Danny was never really asked this. He had a reason right? A good one.
"I wanted to protect my hometown." Yet he no longer needed to do that. He controlled the ghosts now. They lived a peaceful life now.
"Then we have something in common. I want to protect Gotham. But I'm not perfect. The world we live in is unpredictable with forces we don't understand. I thought if I understood something then I'd have no reason to fear. That suspension was leveled at you because I thought it would protect you and the world. However, I only made you afraid."Batman apologized. He wasn't very good at that but he was genuine.
"What if I'm a threat? What if I'm dangerous and hurt people? People you care about." Danny wanted to aim that barb at Bruce but it actually hit him. He was scared that one day he would become that other version of himself.
"Then I want to help you because I know you don't want to hurt people. Trust me there isn't a metahuman on earth that doesn't share your fear." Batman put a hand on Danny's shoulder.
It felt surprisingly warm against his cold skin.
"I want to talk to Nightwing. I think. I think I'm ready to talk." Danny was finally ready to tell him the truth. Even if it scared him to death.

Marvel Physically Canât not Smile
This is related to my Barely Human Marvel post from a while ago. In that post, Marvel is basically a being that looks human, acts like a human, but isnât a human. (Of course, Billy is human, but his Captain Marvel form is basically a doll with flesh. I donât think I even made him able to bleed) But, in this one, Marvelâs face is literally curved into a smile all the time because Billyâs last memories of his dad all consist of him smiling.
Imagine, Black Adam is beating his face in. Heâs hitting the Champion as hard as he can, and theyâre literally inside of a crater that was made from Teth hitting him so hard. Heâs on top of Marvel and just hitting and hitting him over and over again, and during it all, heâs still smiling. The champions nose is bleeding, and one of his eyes is bloodshot. And yet, during all the punches heâs enduring heâs still smiling. He would be lying if he said it didnât irritate him.
Then, there was Marvelâs first run in with the Joker. The clown had come after him after Billy met him while in Gotham.
//flashback//
Marvel: âThanks, Batman. I donât know how bad it wouldâve been if that Joker guy got his hands on the Dream Stone.â
Batman: âHn.â (Translation: Believe me when I say I know. Now shoo.)
Marvel: âOkay, okay. Iâll get out of your hair.â *hovers off the ground and is about to leave when he does a double take* âIs that a mecha?â
Joker: *inside of giant robot Joker, looking down at them*
Batman: *sighs* âYes. Itâs a mecha.â *pulls out grappling hook and makes his way up there*
Marvel: âHuh.â *watches him go before flying away to the rock*
//flashback end//
The Joker now has a bunch of people held hostage in a little cage thatâll be filled with Joker Venom. As of yet, the Clown Prince of Crime is having a bit of a hard time deciding whether he likes or hates the fact that Marvel is still smiling in the face of many people screaming and begging for help. He decides he likes it though when Marvel tells him that heâs simply smiling because his face was made that way. Now, the reason he likes it is because he finds that hilarious because of his random ahh Joker reasons. He even burst out into laughter when Marvel told him that. He laughed harder when he found out Marvel took care of the problem by inhaling all the gas from their canisters so it couldnât be expelled anywhere. Though, he was a little bummed to find out the gas doesnât affect Marvel.
Speaking of the Joker, we gotta talk about Batman. At first, he thought that the whole smiling thing was just apart of his character as Captain Marvel. Then, when he met Marvel he realized it wasnât like a role he was playing, no, he actually smiles and is positive all the time. Then, he realized, oh wait, never mind, his face is just like that. His personality on the other hand was actually sunshine and rainbows though. After about half a year of knowing the Captain though, Bruce thinks he has a pretty good read on him.
Normal big smile (normally showing teeth) = happy go lucky normal Marvel.
Normal small smile (sometimes not showing not as many teeth) = only comes out when heâs tired but seeing as Marvel, and Bruce quotes, âcanât get tiredâ itâs extremely rare.
Small closed smile = could be still happy, could be upset, could be annoyed. Bruce has seen itâs more associated with negative emotions though.
Wobblyish smile = definitely upset in some sort of way. It looks like heâs trying to frown but he canât. Bruce suspects that he could frown at some point but canât anymore for whatever reasons.
Then, thereâs the time Mary nearly died and he pulled her aside to scold her. The JL decided to spy just in case anything got physical. They were then greeted to Marvel yelling. Like actually yelling. Theyâd never seen Cap yell. And not only that, but he was crying. While smiling. And he has one of those little wobbly smiles too. So everyone knows heâs actually really upset at this. Mary yelled back saying how he wasnât her father and how he shouldnât act like it. He told her he wasnât trying to be her father. In response, he was told to stop acting like it. This caused the man to sigh and soon after the two left.
The other JL members with kids were sympathetic, but the next day Marvel was back to being himself. (Mary and him made up afterwords)

Cute Meet?
Started as a kinda character study and idk what happened, i'ma be honest. I haven't written anything with length in awhile, so feel free to leave cc and let me know what you think <3 Just a cute meet kinda scenario, reader is an anxious lil thing and Simon 'Ghost' Riley is obsessed upon first glance. Love? No, not yet.. but obsessed, yes. Word Count: 1.3K Pairing: Simon Riley x Reader/You Warnings: No warnings, no use of y/n tho Enjoy :))
Ghost is the keeper. Ghost is stoic, cold, even apathetic. Ghost can kill a whole platoon without batting an eye, can be covered in the blood of his enemies and be entirely uncaring to watch it flow down the drain once he has enough time to scrub the caked blood from where it seeped through his clothes. He is in charge, able to control his emotions effortlessly, able to lead. He is everything he needs to be. And then thereâs Simon. Ghost is the keeper. Simon is the man beneath the mask who needs one. Simon is more akin to a stray dog than a human at times. Face hidden from the world, yet teeth always barred and ready to bite. Hidden behind a mask, a carefully crafted mask that is Ghost. A man with more scars than flesh, a man with more trauma than peace, a man who simply longs for the normalcy of life without a way to reach it. And then came you.
Ghost couldnât care less for you. The mask is on as heâs on leave, shopping in a grocery store to get something to eat on while he stays in that damned motel for the next couple of weeks before flying out once more. The mask stays in place, a protection, a show the keeper is in charge. You donât mean to run into him, youâre definitely not the type to go looking for trouble- youâve had enough of that in your life, and youâre just starting to get your shit together for the nth time. But as youâre both leaving, you stumble, bumping right into him and leaving a couple of his poor bags strewn about on the sidewalk rather than carefully held within each hand. âFuckinâ âell,â Ghost grumbles with a sigh, clearly not pleased by the circumstances while watching a can of beans he had bought simply roll off of the sidewalk area and into the road- promptly ran over by a vehicle looking to park. No beans and toast now, british man. âI am so sorry-â You immediately apologize, the sheepish and embarrassed look on your face obvious as you dust yourself off and try to begin gathering the mess that you had caused. Ghost is annoyed at you. Just one look and heâs annoyed. But Simon? Simon is enchanted. The sweet, sheepish smile on your face, the way you scramble to help, the heat to your cheeks in your embarrassment as you scatter around trying to fix the situation. The way your hair falls and how youâre clearly nervous, but you still act anyway. You donât care of how he looks- all brooding and intimidating with his hoodie over his head and the black medical mask over the lower half of his face. You couldnât care less of that- you simply want to make things better. Simon notices that though. Simon remains frozen for a few moments, hidden interest in his eyes as he watches you scramble about, resorting your things just to have an extra couple of bags for his things. And you just hand things back over to him, the sheepish smile still on your face, the embarrassment clear- but gods, you look like such a sweet lil thing, lookinâ at him like heâs a human, a person. ââS fine,â Simon eventually spits out, taking the bags from your hands and glancing once more at the beans staining the roadway now, before turning to focus his attention back on you. He could let you leave now. He could, itâd be so easy. He could leave it at that and walk away, probably never hear or see from you again. I mean, hell, heâs only known you for all of 5 minutes, and itâs because youâre a clumsy little shit who fucked up his shopping. Itâd be so easy so why does it feel so hard. âDâya always âave to make such an impression?â Simon quips out, readjusting the bags comfortably in his grip. You canât even pretend not to notice his accent- itâs unusual for where you live, you donât think youâve ever heard anything like it outside of the media youâve consumed. Itâs pleasant, rings around in the ears for a bit. You finally meet his eyes, and gods, they are gorgeous. Deep, rich, brown- like chocolate with golden flecks scattered. Especially in the sunlight- like they are now- pools of liquid gold swimming about a chocolate river. âAh- No- Um-â You struggle to find the right words, now your cheeks are warmer, and itâs less from embarrassment and more from the pretty eyed stranger you just fucking throttled on accident. But at least he doesnât seem angry, so thereâs always that. âIâm so sorry,â You settle on apologizing again, one of your hands moving to nervously run through your hair, pushing some strands out of your face. ââS fine. Really.â Simon says with a slight nod, and you can feel the burn of his eyes as they trail over you. You canât decide if he means it or not, though, he sounds oddly monotone for such simple words. âStill, I feel bad, I uh- Iâm kinda clumsy at best,â You blurt out, sheepish smile on your face despite its softness as you glance away from him before looking back once more, âI uh- just wasnât paying much attention to where I was going- a real bad habit of mine, honestly- which is surprising cause youâre kinda huge and hard to miss-âÂ
What the fuck did you just say?!Your cheeks heat up further, hands moving to gesture with your words now. Youâre rambling, you know you are, but god did not give you the ability to shut the fuck up. âN-Not that thatâs a bad thing! Youâre uh- very well-built!â what the fuck youâre making it worse- âI-I mean- You uh- You have lots of muscle a-and thatâs a good thing! And you have pretty eyes- always a bonus!â Simonâs eyebrow slowly lifts, his eyes crinkling at the sides. Simonâs been called a lot of things in his life- but heâs realizing at this moment that no one has ever called his eyes pretty. Theyâre brown. He can recall Johnny referring to them as âshit brownâ more often than not. And you just look so fucking adorable- continuing to ramble, but heâs hardly paying attention to the words now, watching your cheeks get darker, your hands gesturing with your words, nervously shifting on your feet as you try to âsaveâ the situation. Such a precious lil thing, too pure for this world.
Simon was enchanted at first glance.
Ghost decides he could be, too.
A pretty thing like you? In this world? Oh, love, thatâs just not safe. Youâre a lil bundle of nervous, clearly. Howâd ya make it this far? Who made ya like this? Unsure, rambling, nervous? Ghost wants to learn you. Wants to figure out what events molded you into this cute lil thing. You clearly need someone- he wonât judge, Simon needs him, too.
Ghost decides he wants to know you. Simon has made that thought known.
âYou know what? Iâm gonna shut up!â You finally say, voice a higher pitch and the heat being felt in the tips of your ears at this point as you take a step away from the masked man, who you know youâve done ruined the chance to know with your inability to shut the fuck up.
âTell me yer name before ya do,â Simon says, voice smooth like itâs the easiest and most casual thing in the world.
Heâs so⊠quiet. He let you ramble and make an absolute fool of yourself- but now heâs actually wanting to know your name?
After you manage to knock yourself out of your stupor, you finally offer your name to him, cheeks finally cooling down a bit. Only to heat back up once he repeats your name in that voice of his, all low and gruff- says it differently than anything youâve ever heard before- like itâs something important, something that matters.
âSimon,â He supplies, adjusting his bags in one grip as he offers a hand to you.
Simon and Ghost are two very different people who share this skin suit.
But they both decide youâre theirs.

i know it's over | oneshot
read the alternate ending here!
pairing(s): choi beomgyu x you, kang taehyun x you
summary: you love beomgyu â you truly do â you just wish he loved you back, but after a particularly humiliating night in which he shows you just how little he cares, you finally decide enough is enough. enter kang taehyun, a sweet boy who's the polar opposite of beomgyu; but while you begin to develop your relationship with him, beomgyu realizes exactly what he's missing.
genre: ANGST, romance, hurt/comfort, fluff at the end
warnings: toxic relationships
word count: 7.3k
notes: repost/rewrite of one of my first works (formerly titled: to know him is to love him, and i do) THERE WILL BE AN ALTERNATE ENDING, YES the best friend's little brother!beomgyu au won the poll but i'm so hesitant to post it because i hate it so i thought i'd post this for now until i'm able to edit the other work enough to where it's not an actual eyesore.
you're tired. really tired. exhausted, even, as you stalk through the doorway of beomgyu's apartment. you practically tear off your coat, letting it land harshly on the living room floor with a slight thud. beomgyu rolls his eyes and picks it up with a sigh before hanging it up on the rack.
"i told you it was nothing. why are you freaking out?" he asks flatly.
"she was fucking you with her eyes, beomgyu!" you exclaim in frustration.
"and that's my fault how?"
"it's not your fault, but i'm sick of you entertaining women, let alone your actual fucking ex, while i'm standing right next to you!" his ex is just another fish in the barrel, or at least that's what he says, but the thought that they were intimate together at one point still makes you feel sick. truthfully, your boyfriend is handsome, so you've spent the better part of the past 10 months warding off the women who circle him like vultures. you wouldn't mind as much as you do if he seemed at all interested in helping you do so, especially when faced with his ex that you suspect he still has feelings for, but he does not. quite the opposite, actually. it's like he thrives off of the attention and, god, it hurts.Â
"i'm not entertaining anybody. i told her i have a girlfriend now," he, well, you would say argues, but it's said so nonchalantly it doesn't warrant the term.Â
"a girlfriend you proceeded to ignore while she hung off of your shoulders and laughed all night! i just don't understand how you don't understand how much it hurts my feelings. i'm a human, too! how would you feel if my ex, who was very clearly interested in me, hung around me right in front of you?" and it's like you're explaining empathy to a child.Â
"me? i wouldn't give a fuck because it's not that serious," he replies with a slightly irritated shake of his head.Â
it's always like this. always. you're always the one who cares more between the two of you. you were the one who asked him out in the first place. you were the one who initiated your first kiss. your first fight. hell, even your first reconciliation. you're not stupid, you know he doesn't feel quite the same way you do, but he has to feel something, right? otherwise, why would he say yes to you when he's rejected so many other women? your brain hurts trying to wrap your head around it all.
"you're missing the point! if you were me, you wouldâ" you begin frustratedly, but you cut yourself off. "you know what? i don't even have the energy to explain this to you. i don't understand why i have to explain basic human emotion to you, and i really don't understand why i have to beg and plead for you to care about how i feel!" you all but shriek. Â
"you don't have to do shit, just leave if you're that fucking unhappy," he spits out angrily, which is the first real emotion â besides mild annoyance â you've seen out of him this entire conversation. he gets impatient when you're like this, which usually results in you relenting, but not tonight. you're far too hurt to let go so easily.
"you're right! i am unhappy! i just â why don't you care that i'm unhappy? what can i do to make you give a fuck about me?" you have a brave face on but you can feel your eyes getting hot and your voice trembling ever so slightly.Â
"you could try not being so damn needy, maybe that'd help."
your eyes redden even further and your lips unintentionally twist themselves into a sour frown. you hate it when he calls you needy because you do need a lot from him, it feels like. his time. his care. his attention and affection. yet you never seem to get it.
"do you not love me? like at all?" you ask. all of the venom in your tone has been sucked out mercilessly and you sound more helpless than angry.
"do you not realize how fucking crazy you sound?" he scoffs as if he can't fathom why you'd be upset. as if he's not watching you break down in real time.Â
"why won't you give me a straight answer?" you question, voice softer than it was before.
he does nothing but scowl, and that's enough of an answer as it stands. he doesn't care. never has. probably never will.Â
"then why'd you even say yes to dating me?" you truly don't understand. you thought you were different. you thought he saw something in you he didn't see in his harem of other suitors, and trust that there were many. Â
"i dunno. i was just bored, i guess," he answers with a shrug and your world as you know it collapses. the man you love sees you as nothing more than a way to kill time. he's picking you up right now just to toss you away when the next shiny toy presents itself, and so far, you've let him drag you around because you love him â that's how much you love him â but looking at him now, at how unbothered he is, you wonder if you've even got anything left to give.
"i really do love you," you manage to squeeze out with a bitter smile. your poor heart is on display for the naked eye to see, and it seems like he really couldn't care less, but that won't stop you from asking: "does that mean anything at all to you?"Â
"well, i'm sorry you feel that way," he says simply, "but that's not my fucking problem."
your heart sinks to your stomach and you feel like you're going to throw up. in this moment, as you watch the love of your life dismiss you like you're a fucking dog begging for scraps of food, you feel an overwhelming sense of clarity as you realize he doesn't love you. he doesn't even like you. he probably hates you, actually. like a mental montage, every moment in which he showed you that exact sentiment plays all at once in your head.
all those times you let him choose everything from movies to dinner because the idea of a compromise was inconceivable. all of those occasions, special and otherwise, where you were supposed to go out on a date, but he'd bail without a word and you'd forgive him with no apology. even something as menial as when you'd offer him your share of dessert because he ate all of his and you knew he wanted more, and he'd take it without so much as a thank you. how you'd sit and listen to him tell stories about how amazing his friends were, but he'd never even ask about your day. when those same friends would jokingly call you the perfect girlfriend, and you thought it was an indication of how good your relationship was, but in reality, it was a way to tease him because the thought of actually being with you was so abhorrent and ridiculous that it must be a joke. nobody likes a desperate girl, after all. all those times you told him you loved him and he'd just smile and kiss you deeper. memories like these flood your brain with a vengeance so cruel it makes your head ache, and in a way, you realize it's ridiculous to be surprised when there was so much proof of his feelings in the first place. Â
"oh. okay," you say with what you hope is a soft and unbothered laugh, but comes out more as a choked one. "i guess there's nothing left to say. i'll get my shit and go."Â
you hesitate for a few excruciatingly awkward moments before collecting yourself enough to start gathering your things, which are scattered haphazardly around his apartment from his bedroom to his bathroom. it's like a walk of shame, almost, and you feel even shittier when he plops down on the couch with a long suffering sigh as he begins to massage the bridge of his nose. you feel so small in this moment â like a petulant child who just got done throwing an unsuccessful tantrum â and you're now soaking in the sobering aftermath and sitting with the thought that he just watched you have a meltdown like he was watching a monkey putting on a show. how much more is he going to humiliate you? enough is enough, you think, so before you can actually finish collecting all of your belongings, you're scurrying out of the apartment. before you go, you glance back at him one last time.Â
"beomgyu?" you ask tentatively, tears clouding your eyes.Â
"yeah?" he replies with a sigh. this is it, you think.
"i don't want to see you ever again," you say firmly. before he can reply, if he ever intended to in the first place, you slam the door.Â
-
there's a lot to love about beomgyu. for one, he's handsome, which is obvious, but he has a certain allure you could never help but be drawn in by. he's always been a charming man, but even more so when he's talking to a woman he's interested in. as interested as he could be, that is. he's funny and comically pompous when he wants to be, but still somehow down to earth despite it all.Â
he's been described as a mood-maker, and while he grew to resent that term, you thought it was at least partially true, if only in the context of your relationship. when he's sad, you're devastated. when he's happy, you're over the fucking moon. his feelings are your whole world â or were, you guess, since all that's over now.
it wasn't all bad all the time, you think. there were times where you thought he really might reciprocate even a fraction of what you felt for him, and most of the time, that was enough. you could work with that. love looks different for everyone, you would reason. maybe he just had a funny way of showing it.Â
there were days where you'd laugh together and end the night lying in each other's arms while you'd cradle him like he was the most precious thing in the whole world because, to you, he really was. he was normally so boisterous when with his friends, but while he would never admit it to anyone else, he'd tell you about some of his insecurities while you gently combed your fingers through his long, silky hair. he'd speak of regrets and longing for people to take him more seriously. he'd never say it, but he wanted people to see you like you saw him. the real him. you'd let him cry while your hands cupped his cheeks and you'd shush him while he fiddled mindlessly with your hair like a child. you'd kiss the tip of his reddened nose until he laughed instead of cried. times like those, you'd really think you were someone special to him, but now you realize you were wrong. you were just an outlet for him, and anyone willing to be an emotional dumping ground would do the trick, too.
after a few weeks of moping, your sadness has begun to morph into anger and resentment. you spent nearly a year of your life trying to make an emotionally stunted man care about you, and that's not even counting the years of pining over him before you finally worked up the courage to ask him out. it was difficult to see it in the moment, but after being away from him for so long, it's crystal clear that he was honestly just an asshole who didn't really like you. nothing more, nothing less. maybe he'd find someone to change for someday, maybe he'd even work things out with his ex, but for whatever reason, you weren't her. that's just the way it goes, you guess. what really bothers you are the "what if's" of the situation. what if you were prettier, or smarter, or kinder; would he have seen you for who you really are? would he have grown to appreciate you if you had given him more to appreciate?Â
either way, there's no use crying over spilled milk now. you won't be going back to him any time soon, and he certainly won't come crawling back to you. you'll continue to think of him less and less until your time together fades into a distant (and unpleasant) memory. you smile at the thought.
-
the first time beomgyu realizes just how impactful your absence is, nothing in particular happens. it's a regular tuesday night a week or so after your "breakup" and he's bored out of his mind. he showers, listens to music, texts his friends and makes himself dinner, but something is missing.Â
as he sits on his couch, he realizes what it is: you. right about now, you should be pestering him to hang out and showing up on his doorstep to watch a movie. he'd roll his eyes at first, but eventually relent as long as he got to pick the movie, of course. he wouldn't say it, but he'd actually enjoy glancing over and seeing your reactions. you were comically expressive and every twist and turn of the plot had your eyes bulging and mouth agape, turning to him for confirmation that he was seeing the same things you were. when you watched inception for the first time, it absolutely rocked your world.
he's alone, but he puts on a movie, anyway. every so often, his head turns to the side with the corner of his mouth raised, but you're not there to give a reaction. he should be used to your absence by the third twist, but he still finds himself subconsciously turning to you throughout the rest of the movie. when the credits roll, he's half expecting to hear you chatter on about how crazy it was, but it's silent. the only time that would happen would be when you'd accidentally drift off in spite of how engrossed you were. you'd try to fight it off like a stubborn kid, but would succumb by the final act. he smiles at the memory before shaking his head in disbelief. what's wrong with him?Â
moments like these plague him more and more frequently, but the most notable one is the night before his first day at a new job. he briefly talks to his friends about his excitement, but he's too embarrassed to divulge just how anxious he is. times like this, he'd come over and complain for however long he needed. you'd sit and nod, asking questions during his pauses to encourage him to continue, always adding appropriate and thoughtful commentary.Â
his thoughts wander to how you're doing alone. you really love him, it seems, so he can only imagine how you're faring without him. he wishes you hadn't blocked his number so he could at least ask how you are. maybe you'd even tell him you miss him. not for the first time, he begins to wonder if he pushed you too far this time around. you've gotten angry and given him the silent treatment before, sure, but you've never blocked him and you've certainly never done it for so long.Â
he looks you up on instagram for the first time since your breakup. he's not terribly surprised when he sees he's blocked on there too, but all it takes is a switch to his photography account, which you had forgotten to block, to see what you're up to now.Â
the first thing he notices is a picture of you sitting outside with an ice cream cone in hand, sun encircling you. your smile is beaming and your eyes are crinkled and he can almost hear your giggle through the screen. the caption reads "ice cream date with my best friend!â
he scrambles through his memories to try to remember a time in recent history when you two did something similar, but he comes up blank. what he does recall, though, is you mentioning a new frozen yogurt place you wanted to visit with him for your birthday. he nodded in response, but he knew he wouldn't go with you, opting instead to get shitfaced with his friends. in retrospect, maybe you knew it, too. he had checked his phone the next morning and saw he had at least half a dozen missed calls and well over a dozen texts from you. when he finally texted you back, you took almost a full 5 hours to respond, which was uncommon. usually, you'd text back within minutes. it occurred to him later on that that was your version of the silent treatment, and it amused him that you could only hold out for a few hours. he honestly found it kind of cute.Â
he remembers what you did for his birthday. how you had secretly invited his friends over to his apartment to surprise him after an especially shitty day at work. he came home to an elaborately decorated apartment and all of his favorite people greeting him. he remembers how happy you looked when he opened up your present to him, which was the guitar he had always secretly wanted but could never quite justify buying for himself. you were so excited, any spectator would think he had gotten you the gift of your dreams and not the other way around. you were practically buzzing with excitement when he pulled you in for a kiss. his friends had whooped at the display of affection, and you giggled shyly at their reaction. what did he get you for your birthday again? anything?
he spends days pondering over this and similar circumstances, which eventually turn into weeks upon weeks. what starts as a nagging feeling that he may have gone too far in his neglect for you becomes guilt and anxiety. he recalls just how torn up you seemed the last time he saw you. to be honest, at the time, he was mostly just irritated. but he never thought you'd actually leave. all he can see is that awful look on your face when you finally ended everything, and all he can remember is the fact that he put it there. he knows in his heart that he has no right to feel this way, but he feels it all the same.Â
-
you would have never imagined you'd actually like somebody other than beomgyu, but taehyun makes it as easy as possible given the sticky circumstances. you met at a club your best friend dragged you to, both you and taehyun had to remain sober (designated drivers, of course) and ended up having a surprisingly engaging conversation amidst the blaring music and strobe lights. after that, the rest is history.Â
he can tell you've been hurt before, but he gently coaxes you into opening up as you spend more and more time with him. you're afraid of being overbearing and coming across as a lovesick puppy again, but taehyun is gentle and seems to enjoy your attention and affection, even if he's a surface level tsundere. more than that, he actually reciprocates it.Â
do you still think about beomgyu? of course. do you miss him? well, you'd never admit it to a single soul, but the way you see him in everything has to be an indicator that you do. it's getting better, though. more bearable.Â
a month or so into your relationship, you post about taehyun for the first time. you don't know why you're so nervous about announcing to the world that you have a boyfriend again, but happiness overwhelms your fear when you're met with nothing but positivity.Â
-
beomgyu is shellshocked, to put it mildly. the picture of you and your so-called boyfriend is sickly sweet. it's not over the top or anythingâjust a candid of you in a cafĂ© holding hands with him while looking over the same menu. the caption is nothing other than a heart and squirrel emoji (why?) and both he and your best friend are tagged. his finger jumps to the boy's profile and he sees the same photo. he scoffs at the cheesiness of it all, but his heart aches at the way all of your friends have commented on the post expressing their happiness for you â they had never approved of him for reasons he's only now beginning to understand.
you always defended him in front of your friends no matter what he did or didn't do. you'd "comfort" him after your friends said something snarky and explain that they just didn't understand him. you'd say that if they knew the real him, they'd see him differently. at the time, he'd scoff and say something along the lines of "i don't need for them to see me differently because i couldn't give less of a fuck about what they thinkâ. you'd be hurt, of course you would be, but you'd never say so.
more and more, like an outsider looking in, he can see just how awful he was to you. it's to his horror that he realizes this must be the case for you, too. the chances of you getting back together with him seem slimmer and slimmer, especially now that you've got that pretty boy on your arm. your words echo in his mind as if to haunt him: "what can i do to make you give a fuck about me?" leave, apparently, and don't look back.Â
he can't keep living like this.Â
-
a knock on your door is all it takes to ruin your night â you had actually had a really good day up until now. you and taehyun had gone on a breakfast date and napped together until he had to leave in the afternoon, so you're humming now in contentment while applying your nightly skincare, thinking relentlessly about the boy you think you might be starting to love. it feels different from the love you felt for beomgyu, but in a good way. you still think about him and wonder how he's doing, but you always derail that train of thought with a god-given force previously unknown to you. he doesn't care about you, you chant to yourself â it's almost like your daily mantra. in the midst of your thoughts, you hear a knock on the door. you smile widely when you surmise that it's probably taehyun again. you don't realize just how big your grin is until it drops.Â
standing before you is not your lovely boyfriend, but the man who made you question whether or not you were even lovable in the first place. he has a small smile on his face, and if you were to look a little more carefully, you'd notice that he actually seems a little nervous.Â
"hi," he says, breaking the silence. his heart is racing a mile a minute, and potential scenarios battered his mind the entire way here. what would you do when you saw him? smile? he could handle that. cry? he could also handle that, even if he didn't want to see your tears. what he is not prepared for is the blankness of your features when you ask:Â
"what are you doing here?"Â
his smile falters almost imperceptibly.
"i, uh, i just wanted to see you." you're merciful enough to give him a nod of encouragement to continue. "a-and i wanted to tell you that i haven't stopped thinking about you for the past few months, and that i, um, i think i'm finally ready to be with you," he finishes with a shaky breath.
you're quiet for a moment and squint your eyes as if you're deep in thought.
"but i thought you were dating someone now? your ex?"
"i'm not!" he says almost a little too quickly.
"i heard you were," you counter, not quite believing him. you heard he had been seeing his ex from one of your friends who happened to live in her apartment complex. she had seen his car in the parking lot a few times in the last couple of weeks and had no reason to lie to you.
"w-well, i've seen her a few times, but not seriously. i â to be honest, i was just trying to get over you, but i've finally realized that i can't becauâ"
"so, just to make sure i understand, you're not over me so you're seeing her?" his eyes widen in shock before his head hangs in shame as he realizes exactly what he's done and how he must look to you right about now, but you're not finished. "isn't that what you were doing with me?" your voice is low and indifferent, but each word feels tailor-made to slash at his heart. "wow, i guess some things really never change, but don't worry, i'm sure once she moves on, you'll finally see the good in her instead of me," you spit out.
"can you listen to me? please?" beomgyu is so ashamed he wants to die. he fumbles for the right words, but when he accidentally makes eye contact with you, they die on his lips. he wishes you would give him time to process what you're saying and mull over what to respond with because you always knew he was bad with words, but he supposes he lost the right to your patience a long time ago.
"you want me to listen to you so you can fuck with my head until the next person rolls around?" the latter words are strangled by the tightness in your throat, and he can't help but wince. when he thinks it's over, you continue.Â
"nobody has ever made me feel as small as you have. i hated myself because of you," your lip trembles and before he can say a word, you're raising your hand to shut the door.
"wait, wait, wait! just let me say this," he pleads as he gently grasps the doorframe. "i... i love you." he almost thinks he hears you gasp, but he's too busy looking into your unreadable eyes to know for sure. he has never said anything like this to you before. you're completely silent for a few moments before breaking the tense atmosphere.
"j-jesus, i mean, i guess i just don't know what to say," you sputter and his eyes alight with what looks suspiciously like hope. "except maybe that... i'm sorry you feel that way?" you finish with a sardonic smile and a roll of your eyes. before he can respond, which he actually intends to do this time around, you slam the door in his face.
-
if you were to ask beomgyu if he loved his ex mere months ago, he'd say he didn't know for sure, but probably. they ended things rather messily, which seems to be a trend for him, but if he really thinks about it, he doesn't know what he liked about her after all. if he had to pinpoint it, he liked the thrill of the chase and the idea of never knowing how explosive things would inevitably get between the two of them. he liked the toxicity. only now does he understand that that wasn't love at all, but some sort of sick game of hurting and being hurt he doesn't want to play anymore. he doesn't want to hurt the people around him, especially not you, but it would appear that that sentiment has presented itself a little too late.Â
there's always been a lot to love about you. always. you're so kind and so incredibly patient, at least with the people you love. you're thoughtful and intentional with your words and actions. you're not perfect, but you try your best to be a good and fair person. and you listen. like, really listen. the kind of listening where you're not just waiting for your turn to talk, but the kind where you genuinely want to know what the other person has to say. even if he didn't know it at the time, beomgyu always did love you. was it in the way you deserved? obviously, with the way things are now, it's perfectly clear it was not.Â
even if he does bump into you, it's completely pointless. you made it perfectly clear that you want nothing to do with him. the last thing you said to him echoes in his head with an unspeakable viciousness.Â
"i'm sorry you feel that way." he didn't realize just how cruel those words were until they were falling from your lips instead of his. he didn't realize just how cruel he was in general.Â
he ponders over how succinctly you summed up your entire dynamic:
"i don't understand why i have to explain basic human emotion to you, and i really don't understand why i have to beg and plead for you to care about how i feel!" to be honest? he doesn't understand why you had to do that, either.Â
contrary to what one might suppose about him given his overall shitty personality, he had actually had a pretty good go at life. he was innately able to make the world sit and watch him go, and he wouldn't let anyone forget it. but what should he do since you don't want to watch him anymore? what should he do since you don't want anything to do with him anymore?Â
as he sits in the extremely uncomfortable chair of his new least favorite bar, he's confronted by this truth over and over again. he's not completely sure why he's even here â he hates this place, but he remembers you mentioning you liked to come here. in hindsight, there's no doubt that that was a way to hint that you'd like to come with him, but what use is it to recognize it now, after all this time?Â
not much, apparently. or at least that's what his conscience is telling him. he should leave, he thinks. he should stop coming here every night hoping he'll run into you because it's wrong to make you uncomfortable when you've said in no uncertain terms that you don't want him anymore. he should, he should, he should. and he will, really. in just a minute. that's what he tells himself, but he just watches the door as he gets drunker and drunker, still.
he's on the brink of literally passing out when he hears a sound he'd recognize anywhere: your laugh. he actually thinks he's hallucinating just because he wants to hear it so fucking badly, but it takes the sound of your voice to convince him it's real. you're actually here. he's incredibly drunk, so the idea of being tactful escapes him. he can't miss this chance.
-
you try, and try, and try some more, but you can't seem to forget beomgyu's last words to you. he loves you? you scoff at the idea. does he even know what love is? it doesn't feel like it â truly, it doesn't. if that's what his love feels like, you'd rather not feel it at all.Â
that's what you keep trying to hammer into your head along with the idea that you're doing well, and you are doing well. seriously. things with taehyun are better than ever and you can really see yourself building a life with him. everything feels so pure and brand new. your feelings for him may lack the intensity that you felt with beomgyu, but that was years in the making, so it's only fair that you nurture the love that's blossoming between the two of you while smothering out the embers of what used to be with beomgyu. it's only right, right? it should be, but the way you're so torn makes your head spin.
so you decide to go to your favorite bar and forget about everything for the night. it's been a long while since you've let loose, and you're excited. you're surrounded by your friends and you're ready to let go. it's only when you excuse yourself to get some fresh air that you realize fate has other plans.Â
when you're walking to the curb to take a seat, you feel a tug on your elbow and whip around.Â
"who â" you stop dead in your tracks as your eyes meet with beomgyu's misty ones. the ones you used to love so much.Â
"hey," he says weakly.
"what do you want?" you seethe while harshly yanking your elbow from his grasp. his lips purse and even in the dim lighting outside of the bar, you can see his eyes water even more. he's always been such a baby when he's drunk.Â
"i just wanna talk," he pleads. he sounds so out of it and looks so pathetic you almost feel bad for him. almost.
"i have nothing to say to you," you reply coldly.Â
"but i do." he sounds desperate to a degree that you sincerely never thought you'd hear.
"what, are you gonna tell me you love me again?" you retort with a roll of your eyes. you're obviously being sarcastic, but all he can think in his drunken state is how pretty your eyes shine even when they're impatient to look away from him.
"if you're not gonna say anything, i'm leaving," you snap, turning away, but beomgyu is awoken from his daze and gently pulls you back.
"n-no! i mean, yes. i love you, b-but that's not what i wanted to say."
"well, what did you want to say?" you ask, tone laced with annoyance.Â
seeing that you'll actually give him a chance to hear him out, he scrambles for a moment before clearing his throat. heâs so anxious that you can see his hands shaking as he wrings them.
"i just want to tell you that iâm sorry. i know iâve said it before, but i want you to hear it again, and iâll tell you as many times as it takes for you to believe me. i want to make it up to you â i really do â and i know that i can change. i'm â i just miss you so much i can't stand it. i-if you donât feel the same way, or donât care, or however it is, i understand; but i meant it when i said i love you, and i mean it now when i say that i'm so, so fucking sorry," his voice cracks as he finishes and hot tears threaten to find their way down his face.Â
"beomgyu..." you begin, not really sure what to say. what is there to say? and any hope he has of being with you is almost extinguished when he sees how much you pity him in this moment, but he'll hold on for as long as you'll let him.
"you said you saw the real me. you know i'm not all bad, right? i'm a piece of shit, but i can't be all bad," he pleads, tears now streaming unabashedly from his eyes. maybe if he can just find the right words, you won't leave him.
"beomgyu," you sigh, "i've never thought that about you. i know you're not all bad," his face perks up at this and he's tempted to bury his face in your neck and sob in pure relief. the pain he's been feeling for the past few months is about to be over because you understand him. always have. even though he's like this, you can still see the good in him. just the thought alone is enough to fill him with pure ecstasy. he goes to close the distance between the two of you to pull you into his embrace, but you gently place your hand on his chest before he can come any closer.
"thank you for telling me how you feel, beomgyu, but if you think you can fix everything with a few words, you're delusional." his face crumbles at this and a sense of panic and dread pools in his stomach.
"w-what? b-but you said â"Â
"i know you're sorry, and i know you'd probably try to make it up to me if i let you, but that's not enough. you really hurt me, okay? and it's just, you know, i'm finally happy now, and i have taehyun. i really like him, beomgyu. and he really likes me," you say with a fond smile, as if you're thinking of taehyun right now, and his heart shatters into a million pieces.Â
"it's okay," he smiles bitterly, tears still flowing freely. "i... i understand. i just want you to be happy. i want you to be so happy. you deserve it."
"but..."
"go back in," he sniffles. "you don't need to stay here with me anymore." he swipes at his eyes with his sleeve and tries to send you off with a smile, but it's so forlorn, you wish he'd just keep frowning.
"... okay." you turn away, and even though he told you to do it, he can't help but feel an even bigger lump in his throat now that you're actually listening to him.
"beomgyu?" you say softly, before you enter the door.Â
his damned heart can't help but flutter again against his will.Â
"yes?"Â
"don't wait for me anymore, okay?" and he knows youâre being kind, but it feels so final, it hurts more than any hateful words ever could. he should agree, but the ugly and selfish part of him refuses to lie, so he just shakes his head and waves you off. his love is ugly and his heart is broken, but it's still yours to have.Â
"I'm sorry," he murmurs again to nobody but himself as you enter the bar.
-
âtyuuunn,â you whine into your phoneâs speaker. you canât tell how it's been since your final conversation with beomgyu, but now youâre drunk and all you can think about is taehyun. about his kindness, how happy he makes you feel, and how much you want to give him all of that in return.
âwhat is it, baby?â he coos. even in your inebriated state, you can hear the smile in his voice and it makes you wanna smile, too.Â
âmiss youuu,â you groan. he laughs at your childishness, and you can feel just how much heâs doting on you. itâs a relatively new feeling, being cared for like this, but itâs one you welcome with fervor.
âlet me pick you up from that stupid bar so you can stay the night. howâs that sound?âÂ
âmmm, hurry up,â you pout, and he just laughs again. god, youâre gonna feel so embarrassed by your neediness come tomorrow morning, and he canât wait to tease you.Â
taehyun is so eager to see you, he almost gets pulled over twice while making his way to the bar. he just canât wait to see how cute youâll look in his arms, all whiny and grumpy and begging for affection; and heâll baby you, like he always does, because you deserve it. when he had heard about your appalling history with beomgyu, he couldnât believe how someone could treat a person as sweet as you so cruelly. truth be told, you do have a bit of a softer personality, but that only evoked the need to protect and cherish you in taehyun. he canât fathom the idea that somebody would see someone so pure and decide to take advantage instead of nurturing that innocence. his friends keep saying heâs a sucker, and theyâre probably right, but heâll happily be one for you.Â
heâs lost in his thoughts when he pulls into the parking lot of the bar youâre in, but his dopey grin drops the second he sees your dreaded ex stumbling away from the building. his face is red, and heâs feverishly wiping away tears and snot. taehyun is a smart man, so he can easily piece together what must have happened, but the thought that you were still thinking of taehyun in this moment comforts him. you had run into your ex, and instead of running back to him, youâre thinking of your new boyfriend. what a relief. taehyun has always known you were still a little broken up about your split with beomgyu. he came into this relationship fully knowing that, but he liked you so much, he really didnât care. maybe it was rash of him, but he thought it was worth taking a chance. he thought you were worth taking a chance, and so far, he had been correct.Â
he parks and stays in his car. if he were a petty person, he might ignore beomgyu and just walk right by him with his arm wrapped around your waist. taehyun, however, is a good person. so good, in fact, he waits for beomgyuâs friend to pick him up before leaving his car to find you.
when he enters the bar, he scans the crowd before he finds you sitting with your friends. your phone is to your ear and it only takes a few seconds for his own to ring. he smiles when he sees your contact photo (the one you both took on a date to your favorite frozen yogurt shop) appear on his screen. he rejects the call and watches you pout before striding over to you and placing his hand on your shoulder. you turn around with a scowl, but your features immediately melt, and you grace him with a toothy grin. you excitedly squeal and wrap your arms around him. he matches your enthusiasm as he peppers your face with kisses.
beomgyu, who has very unfortunately come back to get his phone, watches it all and itâs enough to make him nauseous. heâs in such a daze as he watches you two that he barely registers his own friend honking at him to hurry up. he sees the afterimage of you leaning into taehyunâs touch and accepts the fact that youâve truly moved on and wonât be coming back. he replays the last conversation you had and he decides heâll hold onto your words forever. theyâre all he has left, after all.
-
youâre so used to taehyunâs apartment that even though youâre drunk enough to see stars, youâre still able to navigate it with ease. taehyun sits you down on his couch and kneels while removing your shoes for you.Â
âso chivalrous,â you giggle.Â
âanything for my princess,â he replies cheekily with the biggest grin youâve ever seen.Â
âwhy are you so nice?âÂ
âbecause i like you,â he says as if itâs the most obvious thing in the world.
âi like you, too.â you whisper while your face warms. your gaze becomes heated, and he cups your cheeks while gently guiding your face towards his. his touch is soft, and his lips? even softer.Â
he doesnât push for more. youâre drunk and vulnerable at the moment, so he graciously grabs some of his clothes for you to change into and waits for you to come to bed. when you do, you plop down and he pulls you into his arms. you smile at his earnestness. he locks his arms around you, and for the first time in your life, a man is making you feel so happy and secure you canât help but melt into the feeling. you feel safe. you feel loved.
âi really like you, you know?â he whispers into your hair, and itâs all you can do to keep your heart inside of your chest.Â
âi know. i really like you, too.â and you do. things with taehyun are still new, but as his breathing slows, you realize this is how love should be, and you think you want to be with him for a long, long time.

"You have beautiful eyes."
(So, I've been skimming Tumblr and haven't found any goddamn Cooper Howard fics that involve how pretty his damn eyes are. Only a handful of people actually mentioned it - babyghoul still has his luscious eyelashes. So since nobody has written a fic of it, I put it in my hands >:] Enjoy!)
Warnings: Mild nudity, mentions of after-sex, cuddling, complimenting, tooth-rotting fluff, a teeny of lore-building in the first few paragraphs
It was a quiet evening, the both of you laying on an old mattress you had found that was surprisingly intact enough to not have a spring digging into your back. The night was elongated from the actions that happened merely moments ago, labored breath between the both of you still filling your ears.
Turning to face Cooper, your eyes roamed his scarred body. A lean frame with muscle, not too much yet not too little. Just enough to show off how strong he can be. You both met only months ago. It was supposed to be just him killing a bounty for you and you'd pay him in caps and viles. Though after the next few bounties, you grew on him and decided to tag along with his journeys. It was like the longer you were both exposed to each other, the more you fell. Ending up in this situation many times before. Quick, easy, just to relieve stress.
Until now. You took the time to observe him. Observe his scars and muscles and callouses as he laid on his back, arms behind his head as his eyes were closed for the moment. You let your gaze drift up to his face - the normally hardened expression softening.
"I can feel you starin'," he spoke after a moment, making your cheeks flush red as you look away.
"Sorry, I just never seen you so... relaxed," you mumbled sheepishly with a chuckle.
A soft hum left him, his arm wrapping around your shoulder and pulling you in without warning. This was rare, the physical touch. Affectionate. Slowly, you rest your head on his chest, hearing the faint beat of his rotten heart and the rasp of his lungs as he breathed.
A moment passed before you looked back up at him, capturing his gaze with your own. Suddenly, you noticed something you never noticed.
His eyes. You never studied them because of how much movement he made - or there just wasn't any time. You would have thought that his lashes would have been gone along with his other body hair but no. They were still there. Rather thick and long. Framing the hazel orbs of his. Making them stand out.
They seemed almost a rich, deep gold and green at the moment because of the lighting - only the dim flame of the oil lamp on the ground beside the mattress lighting the area.
They were beautiful.
"I never noticed your eyes," you blurted, your gaze lingering on his. You could just see the shift of emotion in them - they were so expressive. More expressive than you expected. It showed he was still a man - still human - even if he did turn into the being he is now.
"Is that a compliment, darlin'?" he mused, raising a hairless brow.
You pondered. Maybe it was. Maybe you should say the things about them that were stuffed in the back of your brain.
"Yes," you answered after a beat. "I'd say more about them if I could put it into words."
He was the one to break the eye-contact, leaning his head back. You didn't speak again, afraid you might have hit a soft spot in the man. But you could see the corners of his lips twitch, his roughened fingertips tracing imaginary shapes on your bicep as he gazed up at the ceiling, through the holes in the roof.
"I never paid attention," you continued with little hesitancy. "Of your eyes, I mean. I always thought all Ghouls had fully black eyes."
A grunt in response. You can take that. The silence fell between the both of you once more. With a heavy exhale, he pulled you closer until your body pressed firmly into his side. A subtle gesture. A silent thank you.
Maybe you should pay attention to him more often.
Thank you for reading! Give me a message if you want to request any prompts for our cowboy ghoul here :D

The fetishization of Hobie Brown
Side note: This post is not intended to start up the age discourse that surrounds Hobie. I am not going to get into it as this argument/debate comes up every so often and really doesnât prove anything on either side you are on. Iâm not dissuading anyone from absorbing any content of Hobie and saying itâs problematic EXCEPT for the things Iâm pointing out in this post. If you see Hobie as a minor, thatâs fine. If you view him as an adult, thatâs also fine. Until the directors come forward and confirm his canonical age I am not going to bring up the same facts that is brought up whenever his age comes to discussion. This is just me bringing up a reoccurring issue Iâve noticed that doesnât get too addressed by the community (and when it does itâs often pushed to the side)
The fetishization and inherently the oversexualization of Hobie Brown is not only problematic but also harmful. Black men being fetishized has been going on for decades since slavery times. Iâm not going to go too deep into the history but if youâre interested this creator has a very good video discussing it.
With Hobie Brown being a darkskin black man that is part of the punk scene and comes off with a âroughâ exterior youâre going to have people put stereotypes on him. Despite how heâs portrayed in the movie Iâve seen people headcanon him as this cold person who wouldnât care about his partnerâs feelings or come off as a womanizer that sleeps with a lot of partners without a care in the world. He fucks rough and is aggressive while the reader is this innocent person pulled under his spell. Thatâs where some of the problem delves with him being portrayed as this aggressive and sex deviant who doesnât care about his partner(s) feelings. Itâs a stereotype a lot of (mainly non black) people see black men as.
Despite the fact that Hobie in the movie shows to deeply care for his friends, even going as far as helping Miles who he didnât even know up until now. Heâs shown to be gentle when handling Mayday. Yet people still want to paint him as the polar opposite.
Take Miles G for instant. Iâve seen him get the same treatment with him being painted as a âgangsterâ who is aggressive and your typical gang lord despite him only having five minute screen time. While yes from that little time he does seem to be the much colder version of Miles Morales painting him out to be a thug goes into that dangerous fantasy a lot of people see black men. People (again mainly non blacks) view black men as this dominant and powerful man who is always aggressive in and out the bedroom.
The same can be said for Miguel who even the screenwriters have written him as âanimalisticâ and âferalâ. Writing him off more as some beast than a human being.
Circulating back to Hobie thereâs nothing wrong with finding him attractive the problem delves if youâre headcanoning him or viewing him as your stereotypical âhoodâ boyfriend who is deprived of any other emotion except for anger, jealousy, or this sex god who will beat up people for even looking at his partner. When we make these harmful stereotypes about black characters it starts to trickle down to irl and how we view actual people.
And we end up seeing shit like this on the daily. I donât even have to explain why this is problematic.
All in all Hobie Brown is much more than just a pretty face. Heâs a young black man living in an oppressive fascist society that heâs actively fighting against. He deserves to be treated more than just a sexy conveniently attractive guy but a much more complex character whoâs backstory in atsv is still a mystery. If youâre just gonna sexualize him 24/7 and not see him anything outside of that youâre weird, and youâre even weirder if you headcanon with âheâs ugly but he got that big dick đ€Ș.â

in the far corner of the forest III
Pairing: Orc!Bucky Barnes x human!f!reader
Word Count: 6,540
Summary: For the longest time, the kingdom has used Bucky as their number one fighter, forcing him to win their wars for them. The only thing he asked for in return after he was done was that they give him a wife, and they did. They handed him the orphan he picked on a silver platter; it wasn't like anyone would miss her. It would've been perfect if she actually wanted to be there though.
Warnings: hand injury, mentions of blood, wound sutures/stitches, angry behaviour, jealousy, fighting, crying, racism against orcs. I think that's all.
A/N: this is the longest part yet because it might take me a while with part 4 depending on how the very important interview i have on the 17th goes. please send me good wishes on the stars if possible i would really appreciate it. And please enjoy this one and let me know what you thought if you can xxđđ
~
âI got you something, little human,â Bucky said, his tone softer than it was that same afternoon as he scratched the back of his head.
He was new to courting, and it wasnât exactly normal that he was courting his already-wife. Still, he was doing everything possible.
Buckyâs life has all been about fighting and wars. He didnât do love or courtship. He didnât do coddling or romancing. But there was a first time for everything and he was trying his best.
âThank you,â she replied without looking up, pretending to be focused on folding laundry.
She was ignoring him.
Bucky had let his voice get loud a couple of hours ago after he had found her lost in the forest again. Only this time her foot was already messed up and she needed the rest, but she wouldnât listen.
It hurt him how much pain she was willing to go through if it meant she could get away from him, but he wouldnât let it show.
Instead, he yelled in frustration as he brought her back to their cottage.
She seemed like she wouldnât quit, and so he wasnât going to quit either.
Despite her constant rejection, Bucky refused to give up, his determination fueled by a newfound sense of purpose. He was willing to endure anything, face anything, if it meant earning even a glimmer of acceptance, or even affection, from her.
âYou didnât even see what I got you,â Bucky tried again, hoping she would at least look at him.
When she did, he gave a tiny smile and walked to the cottage door, bringing something inside.
âHere.â He dragged in a shiny wooden chair and placed it before his on their small dining table.
âYou bought me a chair,â she said, pretending to be uninterested to hide the warmth that just spread throughout her heart.
âI made you a chair,â Bucky corrected, proudly palming the smooth wood, swiping his tongue over his tusks.
Bucky knew gifts were an essential part of courting and he didnât like how she had to eat on the bed while he ate alone on the dining table because he only owned one chair.
He knew his days as a loner were long gone and it made his heart swell that he had her to share his house and life with now.
So he got to work and decided to make her her own chair out of an old oak tree. Being a lumberjack who had a woodworking shop had its perks after all.
It was going to be a weekend surprise, but he thought now was better timing after the fight they just had.
âYouâ you made this? From scratch?â She stood up in surprise, laundry forgotten for now.
âYes.â
âFor me?â She asked, not able to hide her emotions at the kind gesture anymore.
âYeah,â Bucky chuckled, taking a step back so she could examine the chair.
She sat down and a big smile found its way on her lips when she looked up at Bucky. The chair was comfy and new and hers.
No one has ever gotten her anything, let alone made her something so beautiful. It was so special and a flood of emotions washed over her at the idea that someone had actually thought of her enough to make her a chair. That Bucky had made her a chair.
âThank you,â she whispered, breaking eye contact so that she wouldnât tear up.
Bucky only nodded in reply, internally celebrating the win with his heart doing backflips. She liked the chair.
She stood up and closed the small distance between her and the orc, getting on her tiptoes to press a quick kiss to his cheek, âwelcome home.â
She quickly put the clean laundry in its place in the closet and went to the kitchen to start dinner, leaving Bucky with the most idiotic smile on his face as he shifted back and forth on his feet like a teenager.
She was punishing him for yelling at her by not making dinner, but that chair and the effort behind it deserved a good meal.
~
She was cleaning up after dinner later that night when she heard Bucky moving stuff outside. She didnât pay it much mind; it was his house after all.
âCome outside, little human,â his voice called for her and she tentatively stepped out of the kitchen.
Bucky was standing by the open cottage door, a hopeful smile on his face as he encouragingly nodded for her to come over to him.
She didnât know what to think, but any chance not to stay cooped up inside the cottage was going to receive a yes from her.
It wasnât like she was ungrateful. She was certainly thankful she had a roof over her head and warm walls that she could hide inside from the rain and the cold.
But again, her situation wasnât the most ideal either. If it was up to her, she would have stayed at the orphanage with the rest of the girls because if her fate was drawn for her to be an isolated orcâs wife, she didnât want to be married.
When she stepped outside, however, marriage and Bucky didnât seem that bad for a second.
âI thought we could watch the stars now that the sky was clear,â Bucky explained, internally nervous that she might call him ridiculous and refuse to sit with him.
He had waited for a day without rain and laid out a thick blanket on the ground before their cottage, the way lit for her feet by a close by lantern he had put out.
She was enthralled, mouth open and breath stolen. Tears welled up in her eyes, a mixture of joy and disbelief engulfing her.
Bucky has even went as far as bringing out the shawl he had gotten her just in case she felt cold.
It was just like⊠a date.
Her heart raced and she smiled shyly at the orc, making him smile too as he watched her sit down on the blanket, holding her knees to her as she glanced up at the night sky nervously.
She has never been on a date before in her life, the townâs boys always picking other girls from the orphanage to fool around with, but never her. She was never really anyoneâs type.
She slightly shook her head to shut down her insecure thoughts, knowing that none of those player town boys could have ever brought her on a date like this.
âIs the ground too cold?â Bucky asked as he draped her shawl over her shoulders.
She hugged the soft material around her body, smiling gratefully at the orc as she shook her head.
She was too shy to even speak at this point, her mind barely registering the amazingly romantic end to her day that Bucky had brought into existence.
Bucky then laid down on his back, wordlessly urging her to do the same.
She got on her back, eyes mesmerized by the sight of the stars. She has never seen so many before, her view from her roomâs window at the orphanage was very limited.
It was different here in the middle of the woods because there were no town lights to take the view away from the sky and it was gorgeous.
âSo beautiful,â she whispered with a smile, observing how the stars sparkled above them.
âYes, the most beautiful,â Bucky whispered back, watching her as she watched the sky.
He wished she could one day look at him the same way she was looking at those stars; the same way he was looking at her.
In his eyes, there was a mix of determination and yearning, reflecting his unwavering commitment to win her heart despite her initial reluctance. Buckyâs gaze lingered on her, drinking in every detail as if he couldnât believe she was really here, right next to him.
She turned her eyes to him, her shy smile widening, âthank you for this, Bucky.â
Gods, the way she said his name was something else.
âYouâre welcome, sweet thing.â Bucky smiled back, turning his eyes back to the sky as to not make her uncomfortable under his stare.
As they silently continued stargazing, she felt her heart become lighter. She felt so serene, so content, and she had suddenly forgiven Bucky for raising his voice at her just hours ago, wanting nothing but for this peacefulness to last for as long as possible.
Was it imaginable for marriage to be this good? Could her life finally be turning around?
She couldnât help but want to see Bucky in a different light in this very moment.
She knew that he was harsh sometimes, but she also knew that she wasnât making it easy for him either.
Maybe she didnât choose him and didnât choose this marriage, but Bucky was trying with real effort and she wasnât blind to it.
Bucky cared for her when she was sick. He provided for her. He brought her gifts, filled up her half of the closet for her with anything and everything she could need. And he, most importantly, apologized when he was in the wrong, which wasnât something common for the human males of this kingdom. He also respected her boundaries and hadnât tried touching her after their first night together.
Could this all be preparation for the purpose of bedding?
No, it couldnât be. Bucky didnât need to do this to get her in his bed. He had already had her there and he had willingly let her go. He could have his way with her anytime if he really wanted to.
She wanted to believe that this moment was real so bad. She wanted to believe that Bucky was trying to win her heart.
So she did.
And if Bucky was trying, she was going to start trying too.
She knew just the thing to do actually.
She was going to make Bucky strawberry jam tomorrow to show him how grateful she was.
She might have not much to offer, but she knew she made the most delicious fruit jams and marmalades. It was her specialty at the orphanage. All the other girls always managed to ruin the jams, adding too much or too little sugar, applying too much heat or not enough, eventually producing something inedible. But not her. No, that was one thing she knew with her whole heart that she was good at.
She mightâve not been the prettiest of the girls, but she deserved a good life and she was now determined to build one. With Bucky.
She wasnât in love with him, she knew that, but she didnât need love to have a good marriage. Respect and effort were going to be enough.
This marriage could be her chance at building a life worth living.
âCould you bring home some strawberries tomorrow?â
~
âOh my gods, this is amazing!â Bucky exclaimed, sliding another spoonful of strawberry jam in his mouth.
âIâm happy you like it,â she replied proudly, a smile plastered on her timid features as she brought a basket of sliced bread to the table.
It felt so good to have someone other than the orphanage girls taste her handâs making. Receiving Buckyâs praise felt so much different than all the compliments sheâs ever received before.
It felt⊠way better.
âItâs really good, little human.â Bucky was too busy adding jam on the piece of bread in his hand, groaning as he slipped it into his mouth and chewed, âhow much of this did you make?â
She laughed, âwell, I wanted to start with a small pot because I didnât know if you liked jam and I didnât wanna throw out any of it, but we have enough if you finish this and want more!â
âNone of this is getting thrown out, little human,â Bucky told her seriously, âI asked because I wanted to take some to Sarah. She has a sweet tooth and she would love this.â
A frown quickly replaced her smile at the mention of another femaleâs name. She suddenly felt like wanting to take the bowl of jam away from the orc. Hell, she felt like she wanted to get back the jam he had already ate and swallowed.
âWhoâs Sarah?â She asked, trying to act nonchalant as she greased her bread with some jam.
âSheâs Samâs sister,â Bucky answered innocently, oblivious to the way she hummed with her jaw clenched.
âAnd whoâs Sam?â
âOh, right, you donât know Sam. Heâs my best friend; and my partner in the shop. Great guy,â Bucky told her, more interested in the jam than her reaction.
At least Sam was a male.
So just to be clear, Bucky wanted to take the jam she made to his best friendâs sister so she could have a taste and satisfy her sweet tooth? Yeah, she didnât like that very much.
âIs she, like, married?â She wondered, trying hard not to show her anger.
âWho?â Bucky asked, chewing the bite in his mouth, the foreign question finally gaining his attention.
âSweet tooth Sarah,â she answered with a somewhat bitter tone that Bucky has never heard before, her thumb swiping under his plump lips before she could stop herself as she harshly wiped away jam from the orcâs face.
The realization as to why her mood had suddenly turned sour made Bucky smile as he hurriedly swallowed his food, âlittle human,â
She looked up at him with a silent glare.
Despite her efforts to appear unaffected, there was a vulnerability in her eyes, a hint of insecurity betraying her true feelings
âAre you⊠jealous?â
Buckyâs amused smile made her even angrier as she watched his lips literally twitching.
Jealous? Pfft, of course not! Why would she be jealous!
âNo!â She replied aloud defensively, âit was just a question.â She stood up, collecting the plates from the table without asking if Bucky was done eating.
âHey, thatâs mine!â Bucky laughed, holding onto the small bowl of jam.
âTry to save some for your Sarah,â she snapped, snatching her hand from the orcâs as she let him have the bowl.
Bucky raised an eyebrow at her surprising reaction, his widening smile still glued to his face.
She frustratingly sped to the kitchen, violently twisting the water tab open as she rolled her sleeves up and started washing the things in the sink.
She had went through all this trouble and used all of these bowls that she now had to wash just for him to want to take her jam to another female to eat.
Who did he think he was?
It was her fault for trying to do something nice in the first place.
He didnât even answer her question, and that Sarah was probably unmarried. She was probably an orc too. Yeah, it made sense that Bucky would be attracted to someone similar to him. Those two âfriendsâ were probably part of his clan.
The clan he never introduced her to.
How naive was she to think this marriage could actually work?
Bucky was outside still smiling to himself like a fool as he finished the rest of her sweet jam.
She was jealous. She was jealous over him.
He didnât want to upset her though, so he didnât say anything, letting her calm down first.
He took the empty bowl to her, setting it in the sink as she avoided looking at him.
She heard him chuckle as he left the kitchen and it made her punch the sponge in her hand inside the bowl, pounding it angrily as she âwashedâ it clean.
When she was done cleaning the kitchen and brushing her teeth, she stomped out to the bed, getting in and covering herself from head to toe as she gave Bucky her back.
Bucky walked to the lanterns and dimmed their lights before joining her in bed.
He laid on his back, innocently waiting for his good nightâs kiss.
A minute passed. 2 minutes. 5 minutes. The kiss didnât come.
âHey,â Bucky whispered as not to startle her in the dark, âwe had a deal. Whereâs my kiss?â He put a hopeful hand on her shoulder, trying to twist her to face him.
âHave Sarah give you your kiss,â she replied with a deadpan tone, masking her fury as she pushed her pillow over her head, shrugging Buckyâs touch off her body.
Bucky stared at the back turned to him with an open mouth as he took his hand away and laid back, disappointment replacing his surprise and filling him up.
It was the first time since she had started feeling well again that she has refused to give him any of his kisses. Yet, respectful of her feelings, Bucky let her.
Maybe making her jealous wasnât all that fun after all. But he didnât even mean to make her jealous, he was just talking!
Bucky sighed, turning on his side as well as he fell asleep staring at the hidden back of her head.
~
The next morning as she put his breakfast on the table, she didnât sit or eat with him, preferring to scrub the kitchen sink while Bucky ate even though she had just washed it the night before.
She didnât give him his good morning kiss either; didnât even speak to him.
She was still mad at him. This was serious for her, he realized.
Bucky might have found it fun last night, but today as she deliberately ignored his existence, he wanted nothing but to make her understand that what was in her head was nothing like the truth.
âHere, I packed jam for your sweet tooth Sarah,â she said harshly as she set a small jar of strawberry jam on the table before him.
âSheâs not myââ
âHope she likes it,â she cut him off, disappearing into the kitchen again.
Bucky sighed aloud, running a hand over his face as he stood up. Grabbing the jam, he took one look at the kitchen entrance before leaving the house for work with a clenched jaw.
She peeked outside when she heard the door shut to see the table empty. Bucky had taken the jar to Sarah.
Oh, that was it.
She could take being given to an orc against her will. She could take never having been chosen or given the chance to choose. She could take not being loved.
But she couldnât and wouldnât take being cheated on.
Was that why Bucky had decided to relieve her off her wifely duties in bed? Because he had another female? Was it because he had someone else to keep him warm and wet where he needed to be?
She couldnât even think about the idea without feeling herself gag.
Why would he ruin her life by bringing her here when he already had that Sarah?!
How could she be so dumb, trying to meet him in the middle like that? Starting a peaceful life with this orc was never going to work!
She tried to pick the lock on the door like she usually would, but the new lock Bucky had put in wouldnât budge.
She groaned in frustration before hauling herself up and out of the cottage window, running off to gods know where, hoping that luck would be her friend for once and maybe lead her somewhere out of these woods for good this time.
This marriage ends today.
~
Back at the shop, Bucky was as exasperated as they come as he used his chisel to shape the rough piece of wood in his hand.
After everything he was doing, how could she think that he had someone else? What was he doing wrong? What was missing?
Bucky had only ever wanted her. He thought he was the luckiest orc just because he got to fall asleep next to her every night.
How could he make her see that?
As his mind ran with thoughts and before Bucky could stop it, the chisel slipped and sharply cut the inside of his palm.
âGods, fuck!â He shouted in pain as blood started flowing from the fresh wound.
Bucky tried to get the chisel from the floor so that no one would step on it, but his hand hurt more when he tried to squeeze his fist around the item. He grabbed it with his metal hand instead, rushing to the supply closet to find a clean towel to wrap around his cut.
He couldnât continue working like that; couldnât do anything with his hand.
Sam insisted on sending for his sister after seeing the amount of blood staining the cloth around Buckyâs hand.
Sarah tried to be efficient while messily stitching the wound as best as she could, wrapping it up carefully with gauze before advising Bucky to take a few days off work until his hand was healed. She was no doctor but she did her best for her friend.
Bucky thanked both siblings, giving Sarah the jam jar before leaving to go back home as his friends insisted.
He thought that his day couldnât get any worse, but then he opened the cottage door to find the place empty and he could all but forget about his injury as he slammed his fist against the wall, crying out in anger. If his wound had started bleeding again, Bucky didnât care.
~
âWhat the hell did you think you were doing out there again?!â
Bucky was enraged. He had found her wandering around the forest, as lost and as stubborn as ever.
âGetting as far away from you as possible.â She crossed her arms, her stare upset and unbending.
âAnd going where exactly!â He shouted, the idea of her spending the night inside a cold cave clawing at his back.
âAnywhere but here!â She yelled back, her face so hot she could feel sweat forming on her hairline in the middle of winter.
âItâs going to snow soon! Do you wanna get sick again?â Bucky held her by the arm, not too roughly as he didnât really want to cause any real damage.
Neither of them noticed his blood staining her clothes.
She was too infuriated to notice Buckyâs hand wrapped in gauze. She saw nothing but red.
âI donât care. I just donât wanna be with you!â She retorted, snatching her arm out of his hold and pushing at his chest.
Though he didnât move, her touch too weak to do anything to his colossal body, Bucky was hurt.
âAre you doing all of this just because of a little jealousy? Gods, human females are justââ Bucky shook his head in frustration.
âJealousy? Hah! You think Iâm jealous?â She faked a laugh, âthis is not even a real marriage! Whatâs there for me to be jealous over?!â She continued raising her voice, the mention of her jealousy provoking her further.
Her words hurt Bucky more, the real gash now slashed across his heart.
Not even a real marriage.
Despite everything he was doing and trying, she still didnât consider their marriage a real marriage.
âWell, do you wanna make it real, little human?â Bucky growled lowly, bringing her closer to his heaving chest by her arm, painting the sleeve of her dress in more of his blood.
Her heart thrummed in her ears at the proximity, her breath trembling as she imagined what the orc could do to her if he only wanted to.
âLet go of me,â she whispered as tears clouded her vision, hoping he wouldnât be able to hear how scared she was in her voice.
Bucky complied, hating how nervous she got in the span of a second.
She ran to the kitchen at once, a hand on her chest as she felt her heart trying to escape her ribcage.
What an audacious orc! He was already with someone else and he dared threaten her with taking her to bed?! Damn, she was so stupid to think they could make something good out of this marriage. So stupid.
Bucky took a seat on the bed, face in his metal hand as he tried to gather his thoughts.
He had almost lost her for the millionth time today.
Was it going to be like this forever? What could he do to make it stop? How could he show her that this life with her was all he ever wanted? That he never wanted anybody else?
âYouâre not gonna eat with me?â He asked when he saw her slam one bowl of rice on the table.
âIâm not hungry,â she replied curtly, her eyes on the ground and her jaw tense as she waited for him to get off the bed.
Bucky moved away understandably, taking a seat on the dining table instead as she climbed in bed, burying herself under the covers and hiding away from him.
Bucky knew she wasnât asleep and he needed to talk to her; or at least see her face.
How was he supposed to have an appetite to eat if she wasnât on the table with him, her beautiful eyes facing him and her shy smile greeting him every time he would moan over the taste of her delicious food?
âHey.â
She felt the bed dip next to her as it took on Buckyâs body, his warm hand on her shoulder just like last night.
âLet your sweet tooth Sarah give you a kiss,â she spoke before he could say anything.
âThis is not about the kiss. And Sheâs not my Sarah,â Bucky told her, turning her on her back so she could see his sincere face and hopefully believe him, âsheâs not my anything. Sheâs just a good friend.â
She snorted, not buying it as she turned back to face the wall.
Bucky brought her back to him again, âsheâs not married. Sheâs a widow, who is loyal to the memory of her husband, with two kids that are her whole world.â Bucky answered her earlier question, not wanting to hide anything from her.
âThatâs none of my business.â She pretended to be uninterested, giving him the cold shoulder for the third time as she turned away, covering her head with the blanket.
Deep inside, she knew she was relieved to know that Sarah wasnât interested though.
âIt is your business,â Bucky sighed, taking the blanket away from her hands, making her look at him again, âit is your business when you think Iâm involved with her.â
âYou can do whatever you want.â She shrugged, acting indifferent, making Bucky more frustrated.
He released a loud exhale, âyouâre what I want, little human.â
She remained silent, not expecting the orcâs patience or this admittance.
He had told her he wanted her before, but that was on their âwedding nightâ when he had forced her to get completely naked for him.
This one was different. It sounded different and felt different.
âYou donât have to say all these things. We both know how this marriage came to be a thing.â She tried her best to hold her tears in.
âHow did it come to be a thing?â Bucky wanted to see inside her head.
âHow?â She sat up, her voice loud yet wobbly with emotions, âthey gave you an orphaned girl you didnât get to see or pick beforehand to make up for making you go to war for them, thatâs how!â She felt bad for him, but even more for herself.
So she had read the contracts.
âWho told you I didnât get to see or pick you?â Bucky swallowed.
âWhat do you mean?!â
âIâve seen you before, little human. More than once. And I asked for you to be my wife instead of the noble manâs daughter I was originally offered.â Bucky came clean about the truth behind their arranged marriage.
âYou what?!â She became even angrier.
He did this? She was here now because of him?!
âI willingly picked you, little human.â
âWhy! Why me! Did you ever stop to think that I might not want this? Or you?!â She practically screamed in anger.
Who was he to decide her future for her? Why didnât he just take the noblemanâs daughter!
âI did. But you were the only human female who has ever caught my attention. I couldnât take my eyes off you every time I won a glimpse.â Bucky confessed, his light grey skin gaining a tint at the cheeks as he bared his heart to her, âI knew I couldnât continue if I didnât have you, little human.â
Won a glimpse
Couldnât continue if I didnât have you
No one has ever used such words to describe an act so normal as looking at her. No one had ever wanted or needed her. Why was her heartbeat speeding up? What was that orc doing to her?
âThe minute you entered my cottage, you became my one and only. I donât want anyone but you.â He promised, squeezing her smaller hand in his, âI will live and die loyal to you, little human.â
She knew he was telling the truth because she had heard the stories. Loyalty was very important to orcs and their mates were for life.
She just stared at Bucky, words stolen from her throat by the way he was looking at her.
No one has ever looked at her like that. Like she was the most beautiful thing they could see. Like she was the only girl in the world. Like she was the only one with any sort of control over this orcâs mind and heart.
âWhen I suggested gifting Sarah some jam, I was only thinking of doing something nice for a friend.â
She listened with a frown, a little angry again at the mention of the other femaleâs name.
âIf it wasnât for Sam and Sarah and the boys, I wouldnât have survived a lot of things. They are my only friends and the only ones I can share nice things with.â
âThe only ones?â She pouted, turning her face to the dining table in discontent.
âThatâs not what I meant! I justâ Iâm not used to saying such things, butââ Bucky took a deep breath, squeezing her smaller hand closer, âI was so proud of you being my wife and knowing how to make such delicious things that I wanted the important ones in my life to share it with meâŠâ
Bucky didnât have to know, but those words were everything to her because when she thought about it, no one has ever been proud to know or have her. No one has ever been proud of her for anything.
But Bucky was, and he wanted to show her off.
When she looked back at the orc, he was staring at the blanket covering her thighs, doubtful to meet her gaze.
Bucky looked⊠nervous, if you will.
She smiled, eyes tearing up despite herself as she waited for him to look back at her.
When he did, Bucky was instantly smiling back at the sight of her grin. That smile was the whole world for him; it sent him up on cloud nine.
âHave dinner with me?â He asked, his metal thumb wiping away a stray tear from the corner of her eye.
She nodded, her smile bigger as she got up and walked to the kitchen to make herself a plate, her heart going a hundred miles per minute as she couldnât make her smile leave her face.
She wanted to be angrier over the fact that he got to choose and she didnât, but then again, if she was being honest with herself, she probably could have never dreamt up a husband as good as Bucky was to her if she tried.
She believed that everything happened for a reason and she was too dreamy not to imagine that this whole marriage had to happen exactly the way it did just for her to meet this orc, and maybe, against all odds, have her happy ending with him.
Taking the lid off of the rice pot, she finally saw it: her palm covered in fresh blood.
âOh gods!â She quickly washed her hand under the water, seeing and feeling no injuries, the realization that it must be Buckyâs blood sent a pang to her chest.
âBucky?â Tears blurred her vision as she found the orc in the bathroom, trying and failing to remove the wrapping around his right palm with his left one.
She had been forced into this marriage, a union she never agreed to, but as she watched him struggle to tend to his wound, something inside her softened.
How did she not notice that he had come home with a covered up hand?
âAre you okay?!â Bucky asked, troubled to see her crying even when he was the one bleeding above his bathroom sink.
Her heart clenched at the sight; at the care in his cerulean eyes, âwhat happened to you?â
She sped up to get the first-aid box from him, getting out everything she was going to need as she looked at his bloody palm.
âItâs nothing, sweet thing,â Bucky told her softly, hating the look of anxiety on her precious face even if it was for him; even if it was making him feel all sorts of things, âjust a scratch, really. Nothing I canât handleâ.
She tenderly finished unwrapping his hand, gasping as she saw the bleeding gash across it, âthis doesnât look like nothing!â She cried, more tears streaming down her face, âhow did you get this?â
âI just hurt myself while workingâŠâ Buckyâs metal hand hesitantly pat her shoulder.
âBucky.â She looked up at him, not believing that that was the only reason because the wound seemed to be loosely stitched and it was obvious that something had happened to make the wound bleed after it had been stitched.
âAnd I might have punched the wall when I came home and didnât find you,â Bucky mumbled lowly, not wanting to make her feel bad.
It was just a silly scrape compared to what he had to endure back when he was still fighting wars, really.
âIâm so sorry,â she sobbed into the back of her hand, feeling terrible for all the things she has been putting him through ever since she came here.
âHey, Iâm okay.â Buckyâs metal hand cupped her cheek, his smooth thumb sliding across to wipe her tears.
âNo, youâre not.â She shook her head in deep regret, not believing that he was still the one reassuring her in such a state.
âI am, I swear on our marriage.â Bucky wiped under her eyes patiently, caring about nothing but her heart carrying no burdens.
She was speechless because did Bucky just use their marriage to swear? Was it really that important to him that he would swear on it?
She didnât care that this was an arranged marriage in possibly the most twisted of ways, a woman knew love when she encountered it and that orcâs eyes were showing nothing but pure love.
In the middle of her heartâs longing for a person to care about her, she couldnât bring herself to step on Buckyâs. Trying to calm her down when he was the one injured and dripping blood? Yeah, that was an orc worth trying, caring and staying for.
âIâmâ Iâm gonna need to redo the stitches, is that okay?â She sniffled, relaxing herself as she wordlessly promised those concerned blue eyes to give them and this marriage her all.
âYes.â Bucky smiled when he saw her wipe her tears away and the smile she gave him back made his heart soar.
âIt might hurt a little, but just for a short bit, okay?â
Bucky nodded, not believing how delicately she was handling his huge hand with her smaller ones.
He was glad she never had to witness him back then or the actually deadly injuries he had had inflicted on him during wars. He wouldnât have been able to take that look of fear in her eyes after every fight.
âWho did those sloppy stitches anyway?â She wondered in dissatisfaction with the work and Bucky swallowed hard.
She looked at him knowingly when he remained silent, âit was sweet tooth Sarah, wasnât it?â She asked with half a smile as she started cautiously taking out the old stitches with the tweezers.
âYes.â Bucky nodded sheepishly, âbut Sam only called for her help because they donât offer me help in the kingdomâs infirmaries.â
âWhat?!â Her head snapped up angrily.
They donât offer him service at the infirmaries?! After all that he had done for this kingdom?
âIâm no longer a soldier of their own soâŠâ Bucky shrugged with a sad smile.
Her expression went from angry to devastated to angry again in less than a second, âthis is gonna sting a little.â She warned as she disposed of the old sutures in the bin.
âDonât be upset, little human.â
She looked up, not knowing what to say or how to apologize to the orc about the terrible treatment of this kingdomâs people, but his smile told her that everything was going to be all right. She couldnât help but smile back.
Her eyes swayed between his palm and his face as she started disinfecting the wound with the piece of sterilized cotton in her hand.
Bucky hissed and winced, making her stop at once.
âIâm sorry! Iâm so soââ
âHa, fooled ya! Itâs not that bad,â Bucky laughed, amused at her reaction, instantly earning himself a slap on his shoulder with the back of her hand.
âHey, you canât do that to the injured!â Bucky whined playfully.
âCanât I?â She teased, biting her smile back.
He smiled wider because she could.
Oh, she could do anything to him and he would take it with a smile and thank her for it.
For a heartbeat, the world around Bucky seemed to blur as he focused solely on her, engraving every detail of her smile into his memory. It was a sight he never wanted to forget, a ray of light in the darkness that had clouded his years for so long.
Everything was going to be okay, Bucky thought as he brought her to his chest with his metal arm, praying to the gods she wouldnât pull away.
âIâmâ Iâm almost done,â she muttered coyly, trying to make him let her go so she could finish tending to his injury.
But then she felt it: her husbandâs tusks were pressing gently on her scalp as Bucky kissed her hair.
Her breath caught in her throat, a mixture of surprise and tenderness washing over her as she felt herself wanting to stay longer inside his embrace.
âThank you, little human,â he whispered lovingly.
As she tilted her head slightly to meet Buckyâs captivating eyes, she found herself lost in the depths of their oceans, catching a vulnerability she hadn't noticed before.
She looked deeper and she realized that beneath his rugged exterior lied a heart capable of great tenderness, a heart that might just beat for her and her alone.
She beamed again as she softly replied, âyouâre welcome, Bucky.â
Yeah, they were going to be okay.

âdouma has a WHAT !?â
douma with his child! (reader) _______________________________________________
âââàźàčâĄàčàźâââ
hmm.. i thought it would be fun if i write headcanons if dad!douma is the father of child!reader!
there are no warnings, my dear lotus.
i will keep it gender neutral.â ă
a/n : i say child, but i more so mean a toddler. reader is around 2-5.
âââàźàčâĄàčàźâââ
à©â©â§âËàŒșâàŒ»à©â©â§âË à©â©â§âËàŒșâàŒ»à©â©â§âË
well for starters..
you would be spoiled.
and i mean SPOILED.
douma simply wouldnât have a problem giving his child what they want. given heâs rich after allă
douma would get REALLY clingy to his child. fast. he would also gain love for his child.
real love, not his facade love.
âlord muzan, what is this feeling? why does my child gives me this feeling, of maybe.. happiness, you call it?â
ââŠbecause you love your child?â
âhmm. iâve heard of âloveâ before..â
give him some time, heâll realize it eventually.
did i mention that heâd be clingy? nonstop kisses. hugs. headpats. cuddles. even âi love youâ although he doesnât fully understand it yet.
you were able to make him feel emotions, so he ISN'T letting go of that. heâll do whatever it takes to protect his child.
if his child was to ever cry, he wouldnât exactly understand, but he does know that tears = not good. so heâd be on it asap. seeing daki cry a lot helped him comprehend that.
âohhh, my little lotus! whatâs wrong, hm? cmon now, donât cry.. how about you color with papa?â
if you were still crying, he would lowkey be worried. and call for uncle akaza.
does akaza wanna be the said âuncleâ? NO.
but for the sake of the child? YES.
as we know, akaza doesnât like douma. but he wont let a poor CHILD suffer from him.
you giving douma emotions also means that you unlock his protective mode. always on lookout, keeping a eye on muzan when his child is near him, even watching both humans AND demons around his child.
douma may be childish and sometimes aloof, but he will not mess around when it comes to his precious flower.
surprisingly, douma would get quite angry if akaza says he should take his child, because he isnât âdoing a good job.â
when in reality douma would be. heâd do his very best. heâd give it his all. akaza just doesnât trust him with a child. let alone anything.
douma would trust you with akaza, kokushibo, and muzan the most if he couldnât be with you. although he would try to just bring you along with him to avoid all of that. but sometimes he just canât.
(by the way, kokushibo and akaza wouldnât mind babysitting you. muzan will do it, only after he threatens douma about it.)
heâd be really excited to see you once he comes back.
âmy little love! im so happy to see you! did you miss papa? lets do something together, shall we?âĄâ
douma would absolutely be obsessed with dotting on you. he loves his new feeling of love.
sometimes it can even be a bit too much, but he just wants to let his child know that they are loved.
some phrases youâll hear from dad!douma very often:
âpapa loves you soooo much!! you love papa too, right?â
âmy dear lotus! youâre so cuteă!â
âmy little love.. iâm afraid i canât understand you.. but youâre really adorableă!â
âhow about papa put on a little ice show for you, hm?â
overall, douma would be a amazing father, and only learn to improve to ensure his child the best childhood.âĄ
à©â©â§âËàŒșâàŒ»à©â©â§âË à©â©â§âËàŒșâàŒ»à©â©â§âË
this was really fun to write! i hope to do more child reader in the futureă

I'm making an analysis of this scene because fuck it, it means sm to me
so basically the scene im talking about is the one above and why (because fuck you l like adam and lute) it means so much to me
first off when do we actually see adam smile and im not talking about when he's being an asshole to charlie or making some unfunny sex joke. I'm talking about when he looks genuine.
Like he looks actually happy, not entertained but happy because thats what it is with charlie. He's smiling because he's entertained with her reactions and how pissed he's making her.
Whenever we see him smile it has this almost evil feel to it (whether that be with the teeth in the mask that he wears or not although it probably is... i'll get to that later). It feels like he's meant to be the villain. He's meant to be someone you're meant to hate. So why in this scene does it make you feel bad for him and lute? (almost depending on the person cause yes i know some of you jumped up with joy at this, i aint judging)
it makes you feel bad because there's something human in this scene whether we like it or not. that also comes with the removal of their masks. we've never seen adam without his mask so him losing it in this scene provides us with the sense that 'hey hes still human' he's not some eldritch being sent from hell/heaven. he's a guy.
this also comes with the removal of lutes mask. we see her genuine emotion. we actually see her being to cry something that honestly seems almost out of character for her seeing as she's pretty much that one character whos like 'fuck it lets power through this'
this also is similar to adam smiling cause it shows you that in the end he wasn't a total asshole.
but back to the masks. the masks make them have pretty sharp looking teeth which is something that we associate with sharks or some sort of predator. yet removing the teeth (actually adam doesnt even smile with his teeth) you suddenly get a lot more of a human feeling
they dont feel like a villain anymore (even though thats what they are) they feel like a person. it doesnt make him feel like a threat anymore so you have an actual ability to feel bad for him.
but moving on (i ramble a lot so this may not stay on track but its fine :D ).
our last scene of adam in this entire show (im pretty sure like yknow... direct scene) is him smiling. him showing genuine human emotion. because whether or not you guys wanna admit it adam was the first human, and he does have feelings that pertain to humans. so why have this be our last view of him? of him being quite literally beaten down.
well personally i feel like this is because the show wants us to see him as lute sees him. she saw him (as from what ive gathered) as a genuine friend. she actually liked his company and liked hanging around him.
so this pushes her idea and avenging adam or getting revenge for his death. if we didnt have this scene her just getting upset at lilith and taking charge randomly and getting just randomly mad at the hotel would be kinda... eh.
like it wouldnt make for that good of a story.
but with our last moments of adam being him smiling at lute it shows us basically something else. that he cared, for what? we dont really know but he cared for something because its clear that the extermination failed and adams dying. hes fucking dying something he seemed so upset over two seconds ago screaming and shouting how he shouldnt die or whatever
so its most likely that he cared for lute making this scene all the much sadder. besides its the only thing we can assume seeing that lute was the last thing that he saw before passing on.
also ive seen theories that make a lot of sense with lute being the only one who stuck it out with adam till the end. lilith left him, eve was created from his fucking rib and yet she most likely left him. so he probably died pretty damn along the first time around
so lute being there for him and showing that she cared for him and that she still cares for him probably meant a lot. most likely because she stuck around until his death, she stuck around till the end which once again, he died alone the first time and dying with someone with you the second probably means a lot
anywaysssss yeah thats it byeeee

SUMMARY: Someone turns up on Sanemi's doorstep after the final war - that someone being a part of Genya's life Sanemi regrets never knowing. A/N: NGL I lost a lot of respect for Sanemi after he tried to poke Genya's eyes out but I do feel really bad for him after the final battle with Muzan because what is he going to live for now? What's he going to do? Fall into depression, probably, and that just made me sad so here we are to be sad together. You don't have a choice. WARNINGS: Genya x GN Reader but mainly Platonic!Sanemi x Reader
Seeing as nearly everyone he had known was dead after the final war, the hesitant knocking at his door startled the wits out of one former Wind Hashira.
He probably shouldnât have stayed up late last night drinking and wasting everything away because he could barely see straight stumbling towards the doors, cursing the early dawn, the furniture he stubbed his toe on and the pounding in his head, but nothing numbed the dull grief and pain better than being blackout drunk and coma-like sleep. At least Sanemi wasnât seeing double like last time.
Although he was wondering if he was hallucinating shit, because ainât no freaking way there was someone showing up at his doorstep at 6 in the morning asking if he was Shinazugawa and if he could please, if he didnât mind, help them find someone?
âYeahâŠwhat?â
They repeat their question, tugging nervously at their sleeves, hopeful underneath all that anxiety. âAre you Shinazugawa Sanemi? Genya told me to go find you ifâŠâ
âHeâs-â
His first reaction, out of force of habit, was to deny that he had any brother, but the words glued themselves to the sides of his throat and would only spill out in the form of ugly sobbing. His second reaction was pretty much equally brutal: tell them that his brother had long died, sliced in half by the late Upper Moon One, all because he had failed in every duty possible, as a brother, as a slayer, as a human. But Sanemi, undeniably, had mellowed out and if he had to crack that porcelain-frail look of desperate hope in their eyes he too would shatter in his precarious mental state.
So he settled for delaying the inevitable. âIf what? You a slayer?â
âNo,â they say, shaking their head. âIâŠhe was my, umâŠâ
Oh.
No.
Please no.
âYour boyfriend,â he barks out bluntly, but tries to tone down and soften his expression when they wince, flustered. âThatâsâŠâ
Unexpected. He could still remember a time when Genya either beat down everyone and not gave a ratâs ass about it or when he would explode into a ripe tomato if someone good looking so much as said hello to him. Or maybe sweet. Sanemiâs always wanted him to have a normal life, go get married, have a family, live peacefully to a ripe old age while he did the bloody work of slaying. At least he got a taste of it. Most of allâŠsad, really. Sad that he pushed his younger brother away so much he never even know heâd fallen in love, someone new had entered his life, heâs gotten over his emotional constipation somewhat. Sad that he never got to spend the rest of his life with them like Sanemi had no doubt he had promised. Sad that they had never known, all this while, that Genya would never stagger home to them.
It seemed like this conversation would be one of trailed-off sentences.
They nod. âYesâŠâ
âHuh. Can see why he liked you,â Sanemi says off-handedly, but remembers he never actually knew what his brotherâs type was. Funny how he only realized it was stupid of him to keep trying to cut off ties with his only brother after he died. But they are cute in their mannerisms, the air that just made you want to protect them forever, wrapped in innocence. No wonder Genya fell in love.
âLiked?â Their expression falls, but itâs still hopeful.
Sanemi canât think whatâs worse, for her to have the only option of thinking that Genya has moved on, fallen for someone else, left them behind because the other option is too terrible to contemplate. Itâs the truth, however.
âLiked,â he repeats, and he can feel his mind just wanting to succumb to the hopeless pain. Sanemi digs his nails into his palm and bites the insides of his cheeks instead.
âI think I should start from the beginning.â
âCome on in, then.â
He waits until they're further into the room before he releases a breath, slumps his shoulders and stares at the sky to mouth his apologies to his brother for not giving him enough time to spend with them, to the gods for leading them on for so long, to someone, anyone, who would spare a sinner like him some forgiveness as he prepared to cry all over again about Genya.
***
âAnd then he told me if he isnât at Himejimaâs Estate, go find his older brother whoâs probably living alone somewhere, scaring everyone away with his temper and dog.â
They laugh, clear as bells, at the memory, hiding their smile behind the steaming cup of tea, but itâs broken, like their fake grins and the mug in their hands. Sanemi wants to laugh too (is this how you really saw me, Genya, after all I did to you?), but he might actually start the waterworks. Sanemi was already halfway there, listening to his brotherâs secret romance and everything he missed out because of his own foolishness.
âHe said he hoped heâd finally be there with you, or if he wasnât, youâd tell me where he went.â
I could tell you where he went, Sanemi agreed, because I saw him. When I was dying. And he was dead.
They fidgets, tugging at their clothes again. âI waited a really long time for a letter. He said heâd send me one if he could after theâŠafter the fight, but it was so long. I checked up on Himejimaâs Estate all the time, but he was never there. Nobody was. I asked around; they told me the owner had died and - and -â
âI know.â If he was a better person Sanemi would probably be reaching out to put a hand on their shoulder, assure them. If he were a better brother Genya would be alive and drinking tea with them. But he was none of those and so all he could do was awkwardly say two words. âGo on.â
âI didnât know to look after that.â They wipe at their face, setting down the cup. âGenya said you had white hair and was covered in scars, and well, there arenât that many of those sort of people around, but even then it took me forever to find you. I tried tracking down Muichiro, but I couldnât either.â
Tokito. Another failure. Sanemi turned away slightly.
âThen I finally found Tanjiro last week. Heâd been trying to find me as well, but heh, since I kept traveling it made it hard.â They shrug. âHe told me where to find you, so here I am. Sorry for intrudingâŠbut itâs a little late for that.â
They glance around, clinging onto the belief. âIs he - is he here? Can I see him?â
âYeah,â Sanemi whispers hoarsely. âIâll take you to him.â
Not before he winds up sobbing himself dry on their shoulder, pathetically trying to assure them as well as tears streamed down both their faces.
***
There was no body but Sanemi had carved out a tombstone for him anyway.
It was under a tree, scattered with leaves, wilting flowers and weeds watered by his grief. Sometimes when Sanemiâs more sober and when he can light a candle without burning anything else heâll leave some there, so waxy stubs are left over. That Kamado kid and his friends came down sometimes and left behind their mementos as well. Unlike his own home, Sanemi did his best to keep it clean.
He left to give them some privacy, walking a little further away, but even so the wind carried their words over and Sanemi couldnât pretend he couldnât hear them raging against fate, death, Genya.
âWhy?â
âWhy you?â
âWhy would you do this to me?â
You and me both, kid, Sanemi thinks.
âYou said youâd come back! You said youâd take me to see your aniki! We were going to - there was so much we havenât - what am I supposed to do now, Genya? You were supposed to be here with Sanemi-san as well, not just me!â
Heâs always been too caught up with himself. Damn, blind to what Genya really wanted to the end, Sanemi thinks wryly.
For a moment there seems to be someone else beside him. He turns and for a moment he sees someoneâs shadow on the ground, someone smiling, someone asking. Someone who didnât want him to go squandering his life on regrets; a favor, the silhouette seemed to say, so will you do it for me?
The answer was always yes - Sanemi blinks, and itâs gone, so he hurries back to the grave.
They're dragged out of their misery by a heavy hand, rough but gentle. âIâm sorry.â
âYou shouldnât be.â They hiccup and drag a hand across their face. âI'm sorry. Sorry forâŠI wish you both had gotten a chanceâŠâ
Sanemi laughed, voice scratchy. âThat was my own fault.â
âYou know what I mean.â They managed to roll their eyes.
âWhere you going now?â
âI'mâŠnot sure. I don't know. Back to my hometown, maybe, but there's not really anyone there.â
Anyone to go back to, they meant.
âTch.â He began to stomp back to the house, gesturing for them to follow. Sanemi pauses at the doorway, frowning, and turns back. âYou planning to sit there all day? You can stay if you like, I don't like the idea of you walking around alone and defenceless.â
âStay - what?â
âStay,â Sanemi agrees, exasperation in his tone at their stunned, slow reaction. âAnd you're having ohagi for breakfast whether you like it or not.â
***
Days fly past.
Mostly theyâre spent in mourning together. Privately Sanemi preferred this to the funeral they had held with what was left of the Corps, because it feels moreâŠcloser. Similar. Here were two people that were a part of a big chunk of Genyaâs life and yet never knew the other part.
They sat at the grave a lot and justâŠnothing. There were no tears or comfort. Just silence, never knowing what to do because youâve been living for someone whoâs now dead so you could live, but what are YOU living for? Sanemi wished time and time again heâd be the one to bite it. Not like anyone much would miss him, and maybe all those times heâd been hurting his brother was so Genya could move on in the event he died, very much unlike him right now.
On the third day they finally made conversation.
âSoâŠâ Sanemi cleared his throat. âHowâd you both meet, since, yâknow, heâs a slayer?â
They squint at the dirt, absently pulling up blades of grass. âI didnât actually know he was one until a lot later, but even then he didnât tell me much.â They tilted up their head. âHe never wanted to expose that part of his life to me. I thought he was just another traveler when we first met; I offered him a room in my house.â
âHouse? Will you go back there?â Suddenly Sanemi is seized with panic - if they, his one and only link to Genya now, went back, and he ended up alone againâŠ
âItâs not really my house. Itâs more likeâŠmy employerâs house at that timeâŠâ
âAh. So youâve got nowhere to go for now?â
âMhm. When I got fired I stayed over at Himejimaâs occasionally. Then Genya sent me away beforeâŠyeah, before all that.â They blink and their eyes glisten. âWhat was he like, as a slayer? I knew he was different or something, because Tanjiro and his friends used a sword and some technique he couldnât master, so the gun and all.â
Unbeknownst to everyone Sanemi had been watching his little brother train all those years ago. Itâd be the first time he exposed himself. âHe was really hard-working. Threw in everything he had to try and learn Breathing Techniques but he just couldnât master it, and I think it took a big toll on Genya. I didnât help much.â
âItâs alright. He forgives you.â
âPresent tense?â
âWould he have told me to go look for you if he hadnât?â
There. The real reason Sanemi would lose it if they left. He needed someone, something, anything to prove all the accusing, guilty voices in his head that Genya hadnât died hating him.
âTch. Fair enough. Tell me about his life outside the Corps now.â
***
Weeks go by.
Having them around, Sanemi discovers, is a stark reminder of what had happened to Genya, yet not in a bad way. Sanemi started forcing himself to bathe more frequently, take care of himself better - donât want them having to put up with my stench - not just doing the bare minimum for his dog. Heâd been alone and heartbroken for so long heâs honestly stopped functioning like a normal person, forgotten what Genya had died for.
Now he had to go out and buy food more consistently because he wasnât the only one around anymore. Sanemi had to get around to repairing all those things that had fallen to ruins at the Wind Estate. Grudgingly he even agreed to let them take over cooking meals in order to get more than just ohagi in his diet.
But he only really noticed the differences when one morning Sanemi staggered into the kitchen looking for a drink after another round of restless nightmares and instead stumbled onto them dumping the contents of the sake bottle he left out down the drain.
âWhat do you think youâre doing?â Sanemi made a grab for it but they ducked out of reach, flinching at the sudden yell.
âGetting rid of this. Youâve been drinking a lot lately.â
âFor a damn reason!â
âWhat reason?â
Because every day is painful and I just want it all to go away, isnât it obvious? Sanemi dug his nails into his palm again, muttering obscenities.
âI thought you of all people should know better than to cope like this.â
âI-â
He should. He remembered the former Flame Hashira before Rengoku. He recalled Kyogo.
Sanemi had always feared he would turn out like his father and here he was proving everyone right. Genya wouldnât have wanted thatâŠgod, what was wrong with him?
âYouâre right.â
They watched uneasily as Sanemi stalked off, but they had nothing to worry about. Sanemi threw out the rest of the bottles that day and apologized to the grave.
âBet heâs pretty mad I turned out like this after all he fought for.â A scarred hand gestures listlessly at the headstone, the other holding a cup. The both of them sat in evening silence, watching the wind flitter around from the engawa. Remaining rain droplets trickle down from the roof.
âGenya?â They set down their cup and ponder. âNot really. He could never get mad at you.â
Sanemi snorts. âNever?â
âNever.â
âAh, he shouldâve.â
âMaybe thatâs why Iâm here.â They flash him a smile. In truth they couldâve been his sibling regardless - sibling-in-law, but heâd settle for surrogate now.
Sanemi rolls his eyes but likes the idea more than he admits, of Genya watching over him even nowâŠbecause it has to mean heâs forgiven him, right, for everything he did wrong? âWhat was he like?â
âHuh?â
âYâknow.â Sanemi draws random blobs in the air, vague shapes of hearts. âWhen you both were-â
âSHINAZUGAWA!â
âDid you make out? At least once. You had to.â
Theyâre mortified and got up several times to leave but not before Sanemiâs heard everything he missed out: yes, theyâd gotten to the kissing stage but no, they did not make out, why was he so vulgar, yes, Genya often had a panic attack every time they held hands, yes, they could show him all the dried flowers Genya had gifted them, stop laughing at their confession story, youâre right, Genya was horribly obvious with his blushy crush phase and NO, Shinazugawa, Genya would self combust before they ever got to the topic of marriage or starting a family!
***
Years pass.
Sanemiâs gotten married. Four mini-mes running around as well, a fifth on the way. He likes to think of it as a parallel between him and his own siblings, because his oldest is the only to inherit his shock of white hair and the second bears a striking resemblance to Genya. They think so too, written clearly on their faces every time they look at him.
Speaking of them, they hadnât left all this while and Sanemi doesnât want them to. Not when theyâve been there to pull him out of his depressive state, united in grief, see him fall in love with a local girl, urge him to court her despite his anxious worries, stood next to him when he was getting hitched, supported him throughout fatherhood and babysat the four hurricanes when he and his wife went out on date nights.
Itâd be just as bad as losing Genya.
âYou better be good for them, or Iâll string you all up by your feet.â Despite Sanemiâs threatening words heâs unusually gentle as he peels his two youngest from his legs as they cling on and whine at him and mom not to go out without them, they wanted to go see the fireworks too, canât they stay up late this one time?
âDonât worry, theyâre all angels.â They help remove the other two older ones from their mom, rolling their eyes. âAnd before you say anything, yes, Iâll get them all to bed before ten.â
âSometimes I think Sanemi nags more than I do,â his beloved jokes, taking his arm and the both of them leave, calling out to the protesting kids as theyâre hauled off inside and the door closes. Heâs lucky, he thinks, tucking his wife closer, that even after all this he managed to be happy. He can almost see Genya in front of him, smiling and telling Aniki not to get too naughty, not abandon them for so long to try and control four rowdy kids.
Sanemi wishes the same could be said of them, though.
When he comes back, tells his wife heâll be back into the bedroom soon, checks on his kids and realizes theyâve disappeared again, Sanemi knows just where to look, quickly making his way to the grave, carrying a lantern and something else.
âYou really have to stop coming here in the middle of the night. Thereâs no more demons, but ya think youâll be safe?â Sanemi huffs, taking his seat next to them. They snort derisively. âIâm serious! What if you get mauled by some wild animal? Who am I gonna dump the kids on if youâre not here?â
âTomiokaâs around. Kamado too,â they sing-song.
âTomioka would give my kids depression and maybe Iâd trust Kamado but not his friends.â
âYou give ME depression.â
âHaha, very funny.â Sanemi passes the slice of watermelon to them, taking a bite of his own. Genyaâs headstone looks chipped in the yellow light, worn and old, but still lovingly cared for. âI think he might want you to move on, you know? Itâs been years. Heâll understand. Heâll want you to be happy. You canât keep waiting around, crying and wasting time.â
âYouâre stealing my words.â
âHey, it worked back then, when you told that to me. Youâre a hypocrite. Use your own advice.â
âI tried. It didnât work out. I kept coming back here.â A finger traces the stone, uncertainty in their tone.
âYou feel guilty, like youâre being unfaithful to him or something?â Sanemi passes them another slice, awkwardly trying to sympathize. He wants them to be happy as well, after all.
âNo, itâs justâŠâ They shrug, head shaking from side to side. âI dunno. I canât. Not like you did.â
Sanemi understands, suddenlyl, sort of. They gave him their heart and maybe it wasnât theirs to take back yet. It didnât really make sense and wasnât enough of a reason to argue against moving on, but feelings were weird and rarely made enough reason.
âNo oneâs going to be like him, huh.â
âNo. No one,â They agreed, and they both lapsed into silence.
âI mean, the guy we met yesterday looked like a great match-â
âHave fun taking your kids on your next date, Shinazugawa.â
âI was kidding!â
They wipe their mouth and set down their watermelon rind before, a ghost of smile tugging at their lips. âYou and Genya really are the same, you know.â
âHow?â Years later and heâs still learning new things he shouldâve known during all those years he wasted thinking it was a good idea to push him away. Ah well.
âUmâŠI guess in the way you both really suck at trying to talk about feelings.â
âYou wound me.â
âYouâre a former Hashira. But you both try to understand and make me feel better anyway.â They smirk. âIn the form of bad jokes, usually.â
âIâm hurt.â Sanemi got the point, mouth twitching.
âSo, yeah. You both donât really know how to do it but you do your best. Thatâs good enough.â
Sanemi caught their eye. ââŠgood enough for me, at least.â He stood up and picked up the rinds, returning back to his tough boy exterior. âEnough mushy stuff. Go back to bed.â
âYessir.â
***
âYou and Genya really are the same, Sanemi.â
They lean their forehead against the cool, rough headstone. The new one. It was new and clear but now it was wet with tears. âItâs gonna be hardâŠwhy did you both have to go?â
Five years later. Sanemiâs slayer mark had finally caught up with him, but not before he had gotten the chance to settle down and leave behind some kids, have another chance at enjoying life, find a new sibling. Still, no one had expected him to justâŠnot wake up one day. It seemed a little too quiet of an ending for the tale of Shinazugawa.
âWhere was all your talk about going down in a blaze of glory to the kids last night, huh?â They coughed out a laugh. âI know you must be really pissed to just die like that.â
Theyâve been holding it together the past few days, for the sake of Sanemiâs children and his widow. Only now could they cry in quiet, in the same spot where Sanemi and them had cried over Genya. Tomiokaâs widow and two kids had joined them as well. Three united in grief.
âI know you said youâre happy you got a chance at all this, Sanemi, but I canât help feeling like you were robbed of having the full experience in all this. Like Genya all over again. When you see him, tell him I miss him a lot, okay? Still very much head over heels and making an absolute fool of myselfâŠâ
They laid down their bouquet, taking a breath. âYou also said you were afraid Naomi, Hiroshi and Remi wonât remember you if you die so early in their childhoodâŠitâs alright. I donât think anyone will forget you. Least of all me. Thanks for everything.â
âI hope you and Genya finally see each other again.â
It wasnât seen or heard, but rather, felt - a loverâs arm wrapped around their shoulders and a brotherly hand on the other.

Chevalier Michel: Even If You Die
From A Hidden Oath: King of the BEAST (2024 Election) - Collection Event
Thank you @dark-frosted-heart for providing the SE video!
â
All was dyed crimson in the eveningâ
???: ...Excuse me.
The setting sun mercilessly illuminated the figure that entered the room soundlessly.
It was the secret agent who was always assigned to guard Emma.
Lucien: Lady Emma has returned.
Chevalier: ...You may leave.
Lucien: Yes, sir.
The secret agent bowed and left the room.
Chevalier: .............
With a light sigh, he gathered the documents he had spread out on his desk and stood up.
-
Emma: Prince Chevalier...!
As soon as she entered the room, Emma opened her eyes wide, which she had been wiping with linen.
Emma was dressed in black - mourning clothes.
Emma: I'll make tea now.
Emma, with her tear-stained eyes, put on her usual smile.
(It's not a situation where you can force a smile.)
Chevalier: There's no need.
Emma: But... ah.
I grabbed Emma's arm and pulled her to sit on the sofa.
I sat next to her and embraced her shoulders, and Emma quietly leaned against me.
Emma: ...I apologize for my unsightly appearance.
Chevalier: Did someone say you looked unsightly?
Emma: No, no one...
Chevalier: Then there is no need to worry.
(Those tears are not the kind that should be forcibly stopped.)
Emma: ...Y-yes...
Her small shoulders trembled with a sniffle.
(It's been a while since I've seen Emma cry this much.)
(You cry like this even for the death of someone who isn't even your family.)
Today, Emma attended a funeral.
The deceased was an elderly man in town who Emma had known since she was a child.
When attending the funerals of nobles and knights as the next queen, Emma maintains a resolute demeanor, but it seems she cannot do so at the funerals of old acquaintances.
(In the past, I would have dismissed it as trivial...)
Suddenly, a memory from the past flashed through my mind.
*flashback*
Clavis: Chev, if you're heartbroken, shall I offer you a word of comfort?
Clavis: The death of your mother must have affected even you.
Chevalier: ...No?
Chevalier: I have knowledge of human emotions from books. I thought I might feel something...
Chevalier: I feel "nothing."
*flashback over*
(I still feel nothing about that woman's death.)
(But... if you were to die before me...)
( ............ )
An indescribable discomfort ran through my chest, and I pushed away any further thoughts.
Chevalier: ââSpeak.
Emma: Huh...?
Chevalier: About the deceased.
Chevalier: He must have been someone you cared deeply about, to make you cry so much?
Emma looked at me with a slightly surprised expression, then awkwardly smiled and began to speak haltingly.
Emma: ...He was a lively old man who everyone in town knew.
Emma: He was baking sweets until just before he passed away, and took his last breath surrounded by his family.
Emma: He woke up at 4 a.m. every morning to bake sweets, and if you went early in the morning, he would always give you extra.
Emma: The other day, I went to buy some secretly, and he remembered me and said, "I'm glad..."
Instead of words, large tears fell from her reddened eyes.
Emma: I'm sorry...
Chevalier: There is no need to apologize.
Emma: But... even though Prince Chevalier is by my side, I'm showing you such a pathetic sight...
I lifted her chin as she tried to look down.
No matter how much she wiped them away, tears kept spilling from her wet eyes.
Chevalier: I do not think your current appearance is pathetic.
Emma: ...
I placed my hand on her cheek, and Emma placed her hand on top of mine.
The sight of Emma, her eyes closed as if feeling the warmth, seemed incredibly endearing.
Emma: Being pampered by Prince Chevalier makes me happy and cry even more.
Emma: But please, just for today, let me indulge in your kindness.
Emma: If I keep being sad, the old man in heaven will worry.
(Heaven, huh?)
(Prayers for the deceased are usually a waste of time. No matter how much you pray, that person is no longer in this world.)
(It would be far more rational to carry on the will of the deceased and move towards the future, rather than wasting time praying.)
(But... if it were you, I would also dwell on my thoughts.)
(It may be meaningless, but I don't think it's worthless.)
(Because you taught me that loving someone, like being loved, has meaning.)
Chevalier: Emma.
(Even if you die, I probably won't shed any tears.)
(But... I swear I will continue to love you for the rest of my life.)
Emma: Mmm...
I kissed her tear-stained lips.
As if to envelop her heart, shaken by loneliness, I continued to hold Emma until the curtain of night fell.

I know I already made one post about people being racist toward Ryan and especially Steven in the wake of the streamer announcement, but I thought I'd go ahead and make a little collection of commentary that shows exactly what I was talking about re: vilifying Ryan and Steven (men of color) while acting like Shane (white man) is an innocent victim.
So, on a post with screencaps showing the team talking about how they'll allow password sharing on the streamer, we have:
Reminder that this is what they actually looked like:
All smiles, including from Steven, who btw has talked on Pod Watcher about how he's had difficulty emoting his whole life and used to practice smiling growing up. So yes, his smile is small, but that doesn't make it less genuine, you assholes.
Another funny one considering Shane lives the exact same lifestyle that Ryan and Steven do. He blows money at a grocery store he doesn't like for weeks on end because he's not sure if he really likes it or not. He buys a ton of different fancy pencils to test them out because he had a whim about it. He upgrades his flights when he wants (such as for his and Sarah's wedding), he buys expensive pajamas from Ireland, he takes piano lessons. He has and uses the exact same amount of disposable cash as Ryan and Steven do, and has several podcast episodes in a row dedicated to his purchases, and yet you only focus on bashing Ryan and Steven for it because . . . ? Don't bother answering. We know the answer.
This is just a small sample of the comments that have been out there today. It's truly ugly. Even setting aside what Steven has done for Watcher (Ryan AND SHANE have made it clear Watcher would not exist without him managing the financials because they can't do it), he's a human being and he doesn't deserve the racist vitriol this fandom has spewed at him. He's already made it clear this is not his dream; if he walked after today's show of bigotry it wouldn't surprise me. I'd say the same for Ryan, but it IS his dream, so.
Regardless. Shane is a grown man and one of the founders of the company. You know damn well he agreed to this. Stop acting as if evil men of color forced your poor white fave into something he didn't want to do. It's fucking racist whether you're intending to be or not, and regardless of how stupid this decision was, Steven and Ryan are still real human beings who don't deserve racist backlash.
Be. Fucking. Better.
