BnHA Chapter 280: I Am Red Riot
Previously on BnHA: The pro heroes over at Gunga Mountain struggled against Gigantomachia and the League until finally Midnight was all, “fuck it, let’s just put the kids in charge.” Momo immediately got to work organizing a sophisticated counteroffensive involving an exploding swamp, a bunch of sedative cans, and a massive coordinated team attack. I gotta tell you guys, it’s really something to watch a large-scale group attack in which all of the team members are actually competent. I don’t know what Japan put in the water when all these sixteen-year-olds were growing up, but that shit has paid off big time, and basically the only reason Machia hasn’t gone down yet is because he cheated and was all “sneeze” and the kids all got blown away because they are little and because he is really, really big. Anyway so then Dabi set the forest on fire because he loves doing that, and the chapter ended with Mina using her Acid Man attack to make herself FUCKIN’ FIREPROOF so she could charge through the woods ready to save the day and stuff!
Today on BnHA: Mina launches herself straight at Machia like the beautiful corrosive wild child she is, but then everything goes to shit when she recognizes him from that one time she almost got murdered while giving a strange man directions. Just when it’s looking like she might get killed for real this time, KIRISHIMA SHOWS UP TO SAVE THE DAY AND SHOVES HER TO SAFETY AND IS ALL “BOTTOMS UP” AND HEAVES A LITERAL CAN OF WHOOPASS RIGHT IN MACHIA’S MOUTH. At this point the grown-ups are all “oh wow look at that, time for us to take over for you kids now, don’t worry we’ve got it all under control” because Oh Those Wacky Pros and all that, but at least Majestic finally deigns to show his face so that’s a plus! The chapter ends with us cutting back to the Jakku battle, where Tomura is curled up in a little ball all “curse you heroes, how dare you [checks notes] save people all the time”, which is a real take and a half. Anyway so things are looking up, which can only mean everyone is about to die. That’s how it works, right. Shit.
HOLY SHIT LOL
THIS IS MINA. SHE’S REALLY COOL AND SHE CAN MELT PEOPLE. um, the hell kind of tagline is that?? holy fucking shit?? “melt and succumb”?? IS THE SUCCUMB PART REALLY NECESSARY. IS THAT NOT ALREADY IMPLIED. it’s like saying “die and then perish”, which actually sounds really badass and I’m about to make it my new go-to threat actually so you know what never mind. where the fuck were we anyway
“IS EVERYONE SAFE” some absurdly bad-at-gauging-situations kid from class B is yelling while the forest is on fire and all the kids are recovering from having been catapulted fifty miles by King Dodongo’s windy yeet breath. of course they are safe, sweet child. of course everyone is absolutely fine, why the fuck would they possibly not be safe after something like that
KAMINARI NOOO MY POOR SWEET BABY
AT LEAST HE’S STILL CONSCIOUS ENOUGH TO MAKE STUPID JOKES. holy shit this baby got concussed to hell and back and then Machia turned him and the others into precipitation and he wasn’t in any kind of state to even try to land safely, I hope to god someone caught him
Sero is all “is there anyone still in range!” and damn, I like that he’s taking charge and trying to regain their momentum. he is so criminally underrated. I feel like he’s in the top six or seven of class 1-A kids who I would most trust to take charge. which is very high praise because that class has a lot of charge-taking kids
SPEAKING OF
it “probably” can’t get through her acid, she says. my god. sometimes the spirit of Plus Ultra just takes ahold of these kids and it’s like, I want to ruffle their hair proudly and then grab them by the shoulders and shake them vigorously because WHERE EVEN IS YOUR SELF-PRESERVATION WHY DO NONE OF YOU HAVE IT GODDAMMIT AIZAWA REALLY SHOULD HAVE EXPELLED YOU GUYS AFTER ALL
man. and yet I really do love this “be the one who can do it” stuff. what a heroic fucking attitude dfjfklks. I’ll just go put on my humongous sandwich board that reads GIANT FUCKING HYPOCRITE and go stand in the corner
damn it this week’s scan is annoyingly dark, it’s really hard to tell what’s going on but it looks like the pros are attacking Machia and the League at long last. way to go guys it only took you seven years but you finally hopped to it
MINA WHY IS THE ACID COMING OFF OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD. PUT IT BACK!!!
I KNOW SHE’S NOT GONNA DIE DAMMIT BUT AHHHHH AHHHHHH AHHHHHHHH
okay what the hell is up with these weird zen proverbs though
“your fear stricken heart”, “the shortest path”, what the fuck even is this. whose thoughts are these. normally these translations are honestly decent enough but I gotta say this time around I’m totally being thrown for a loop lmao
(ETA: FYI I’m only just now realizing that he was saying the shortest path to Master, as in Tomura, not “master” as in to master something fjkldjskf lol some delayed reading comprehension there. so basically he’s just bitching about how annoying these little “flies” are proving to be.)
JESUS CHRIST
okay is it just me, or is Gigantomachia suddenly showing intelligence in his eyes instead of mindless animal instinct the single most pants-shitting thing you’ve ever seen?!! holy shit. the way he just LOOKS at her out of nowhere all of a sudden?? holy fucking shit DO NOT HURT MT. LADY OH MY GOD I’M FREAKING THE FUCK OUT. AND DON’T YOU DARE HURT MINA EITHER!! JUST FUCKING DIE AND PERISH
but also though, is that recognition in Mina’s eyes?? because even though this dude is 80 feet tall now, her encounter with him a couple years back had to have been one of the more memorable experiences of her young life. damn I was wondering when this would finally come into play
OKAY YES THE NEXT PAGE IS A FLASHBACK OH SHIT
this has nothing to do with anything but Mina just has the prettiest hair, btw, and this “just woke up covered in acid” look is a particularly good one on her. it looks so soft and fluffy, like damn. this is like Shouto-hair-billowing-in-the-wind levels of pretty here
NOOOOO
oh my god holy shit?! putting her back in the school uniform to show the slip in her mentality is a PUNK MOVE, HORIKOSHI, and I respect the shit out of you for it you manipulative bastard. goddammit. bracing myself for the incoming wave of Mina feels... here they come... they’re a lot... let’s see if I can latch on to anything I can actually figure out how to describe in words
okay well here’s one, my respect for Mina’s bravery just went up like a thousand percent in this instant, because now we know this was actually such a traumatizing event for her that hearing Machia’s voice again years later immediately sent her into a full-blown flashback. she was that scared and yet she still stood up to him and didn’t hesitate. and now I’m remembering how her knees just buckled right afterwards, and just...
and this visual, though!! what a brutally effective way to show that in her mind she went right back to being that scared middle schooler again for a moment. god fucking damn. holy shit you guys is Kirishima fireproof because if he comes waltzing out of the woods next I don’t even know what I’m gonna do. lolo kids getting traumatized left and right this arc is fucking merciless
um eXCUSE ME!?!?!
YOU MOTHERFUCKING PIECE OF SHIT LET GO OF HER RIGHT NOW OR I AM GONNA LOSE IT!!
THAT’S NOT WHAT I MEANT!!
holy shit he could have fucking snapped her neck like that??! I don’t like this at ALL WHAT THE FUCK
OKAY SERIOUSLY
I’M GONNA NEED ANOTHER KID TO STEP IN HERE WITH A LAST MINUTE SAVE LIKE RIGHT THE FUCK NOW, OR I AM GOING TO THROW MY COMPUTER OFF A FUCKING CLIFF AND MOVE TO THE DESERT AND BECOME A HERMIT AND NEVER READ MANGA ON THE INTERNET AGAIN
OH THANK GOD
TODAY WE SPELL “REDEMPTION” K-I-R-I... ETC. THERE’S A LOT OF LETTERS BUT YOU GET THE DRIFT!!!
holy fucking shit y’all. I mean, it’s not like it came out of nowhere, like the setup could not have been more obvious, but let me assure you that none of the predictability lessened the actual impact of this moment in the SLIGHTEST. Horikoshi really wrote a flashback scene one hundred and thirty five chapters ago and planted it, watered it once a day, and patiently waited for THREE LONG YEARS until he could finally harvest the badass fruits of his labor in the midst of his most epic arc to date. I’m so fucking hyped I’ll even forgive him for sacrificing Mina’s big moment and having her get rescued, because it’s such a good reversal. he didn’t freeze up this time. he promised himself he’d never freeze again and he didn’t and he saved her and god fucking damn. anyways so now Machia is going to treat him like a fucking action figure though but he’s a solid little dude he can take it hopefully
NO WHAT IS THIS!!! STOP KILLING MY MOOD!!!
she better not be dead!! SHE BETTER NOT FUCKING BE DEAD I WILL RUN MY PC THROUGH A PAPER SHREDDER AND GO AND LIVE ALONE WITH MY FEELS ON A MOUNTAIN IN TIBET
CHINTETSU!!
well we know he’s fireproof. another callback at the least expected of times lmao
so Tetsu’s all “yeah Kirishima’s not really all that fireproof but he totally ran over here anyway to save you. oh wait that probably wasn’t very comforting of me to say.” maybe that’s why it seems like he might not have actually said it out loud, now that I’m reading this over again. good call Tetsu
ARE YOU STANDING UP AND CASUALLY STRETCHING OUT YOUR BACK
I CAN’T EVEN BELIEVE HOW MUCH I HATE THIS GUY RIGHT NOW. WE’RE REACHING LEVELS OF HATRED RESERVED FOR NAZIS AND PEOPLE WHO WALK TOO SLOWLY IN FRONT OF ME IN A GROUP SHOULDER TO SHOULDER INSTEAD OF SINGLE FILE SO I CAN PASS IN FRONT OF THEM. YOU’RE A FUCKING TOURIST IN NYC YOU PIECE OF SHIT
lmao he’s just dropping this random hero person and letting him fall to his doom wheeeeee
remind me to leave all of the League of Villains’ texts on read for the foreseeable future. goddamn. I still love you guys but also, fuck you so damn hard
OHO A LIL RED SCALY BOI ISN’T DONE YET!!
real talk, just between you and me, I’ll lower my voice so that Kirishima can’t hear. so uh. we all agree that even if Kiri is fireproof and squishproof, that little can of tranquilizer juice technically shouldn’t have been, right? but we’re all going to hush and pretend like it was anyway for the sake of not spoiling his big moment. even though I am crossing my arms and tapping my chin with my finger while doubtfully glancing to the side
anyway here he goes!
YEAH KIRI GO GETTIM [stage whisper] there it is, in his pocket. should’ve burned. we won’t discuss it
OH FOR FUCK’S
TOGA YOU LITTLE WIENER BUT WHAT’S THIS ABOUT “MY HALF” NOW????
DID HE GRAB MINA’S MID-AIR?? IS HE REALLY REACHING INTO HIS BACK POCKET AND FUCKING UNZIPPING IT RIGHT NOW WHILE HOLDING ON TO NOTHING AND PRESUMABLY FALLING THROUGH THE AIR. DID A LITTLE BIT OF OCHAKO’S QUIRK RUB OFF ON YOU OR WHAT
OH SNAP SON HE REALLY DID THE THING HOLY SHIT???
AND TOKAGE FLEW OVER AND SAVED HIM AND NOW TANKS ARE SHOOTING AT MACHIA, LMAO WHAT IS THIS. MOMO HOW MANY GUNS DID YOU MAKE
Shouji standing there trying to be useful any way he can. are eyeballs really that much more effective if you make them the size of tennis balls and hold them up above your head. legit question, I don’t really know how eyes work
okay after 45 seconds of googling this my impression is that no, they are not. well good on you for giving it the old college try anyway though Shouji
oH MY GODLKDLK?!?!
DID SHE SAY WHAT I THOUGHT SHE SAID, DID SHE SAY MAJESTIC, ARE WE GONNA SEE MASJKESLTKCI DSFLKJL
oh my god he really is the Magic Man dude??? TIME TO DUST OFF MY INVENTORY OF ADVENTURE TIME QUOTES
(ETA: AHH FATGUM AND GANG ORCA ARE THERE TOO YESSSS!)
“that’s enough depending on some interns” oh, okay. now that they’ve done all your work for you. I see, I see
so now Gigantomachia is LITERALLY UNHINGING HIS JAW I can’t fucking believe this dude you guys. everything he does is just like, ARE YOU SERIOUS
please go to sleep already. thanks to you I have my keyboard set to capslock as the default for the duration of this chapter
ARE YOU SERIOUS YOU FUCKING WAITED UNTIL MAGIC FUCKING MAN SHOWED UP TO TEACH US MAGICAL LIFE LESSONS AND NOW YOU’RE CUTTING BACK TO THE TOMURA FIGHT?? WHY DO WE KEEP LETTING THIS MAN GET AWAY WITH THIS
oh my god you guys they really fucking did it
I guess that Howitzer slash fire punch combo really was that potent huh
anyway so now Endeavor is standing there making a big speech instead of reaching into Tomura’s pocket and taking the bullets that he doesn’t know about and shooting him with one asap. dammit Endeavor
aaaaand Tomura is firing back with the wisdom of Shimura Fucking Kotaro of all people
well you sure convinced me. damn I don’t know what I was thinking. heroes suck you guys. how dare they help other people all the time
so now he’s all “PERIOD, EXCLAMATION POINT!!”
take that Endeavor. you heard the man. it’s not destruction without conviction, as god as his witness he will have you know it is destruction WITH conviction. something something the great sage Shimura “I hurt my family for absolutely no reason at all, fuck this ‘helping others’ bullshit” Kotaro. I hope you packed your textbooks because you just got SCHOOLED. I hope the person who ordered you signed up for delivery notifications because you just got SENT. I HOPE YOU LIKE CAPITALISM BECAUSE YOU JUST GOT OWNED. I HOPE YOU CHOSE PAPER AND NOT SCISSORS BECAUSE YOU JUST GOT ROCKED
what an absolutely, unreservedly bizarre place to end the chapter lol. we’re really just done with this week, just like that. Majestic showed up and Gigantomachia opened his chin like a garage door and Tomura is all “you may have won the battle but you suck” while he buys time for Aizawa to suddenly sneeze or something so he can make his terrible comeback and continue Horikoshi’s Traumatize Every Kid in Class 1-A 2020 campaign. what an arc this is my friends. what an arc
#bnha 280#ashido mina#kirishima eijirou#gigantomachia#shigaraki tomura#bnha#boku no hero academia#bnha spoilers#mha spoilers#bnha manga spoilers#makeste reads bnha#I didn't even notice the extra page on readheroaca until I was getting ready to click 'post' lol#something about ochako mistaking a real orca for their friendly teacher#resulting in a hilarious case of mistaken identity#I have no idea what this page is about or what it is doing there#but at this point 'because 2020' seems like a reasonable explanation for just about anything tbh

Maddie Bishop's treatment by the writers in Season 3
(tl, dr: Maddie deserved better this season) SPOILER WARNING: This post includes spoilers up to and including Episode 308 “Till Death do us part”. I apologise to the readers for - after a long hiatus - not writing another analysis post first. But I felt the way Maddie was written in Season 3 deserves its own post. So let us take a look at the the way Maddie was written in Season 3, the inconsistencies with her earlier established character traits and the possible justifications for this treatment of her by the writers.
I. Introduction
I generally do not like to post about a show which has not finished its current season. That is because a lot of developments only make sense in retrospect and only then the viewer can know why the writers decided to emphasize certain developments. As such, I am usually trying not to write episode reviews and engage in wild speculation about what will happen next episode. I much prefer writing after the end of a season.
Looking back on all the shows I have seen in my life, there are only a few that come to mind that had a great third season. The West Wing and the Wire are the prominent examples that come to mind.
(Shameless West Wing Plug. I so miss this show and its intelligent characters, especially in the current political climate).
Other shows meanwhile go completely off the rails (like Andromeda, which never recovered from its Season 3). So in general I tend to be very forgiving to shows entering their third season, not expecting much. Thus I would usually not write something like this.
But: I worry about the treatment of a character I feel very protective of, the chracter who is my favourite character in the show: Maddie Bishop.
(Vivat regina.)
Her being my favourite character might be surprising to the reader considering most of the posts on this tumblr are about Ryn (and to a lesser degree Ben), while I have written only sparingly about Maddie. But that is simply because Ryn and Ben are more interesting characters to analyze. Emotionally, they tick the "lets root for them" box for me, despite - and because of - their character flaws. Those flaws always add to the story in a fascinating and dramatic way.
But Maddie Bishop I RESPECTED right from the start. This is in no small part because I always felt drawn to her analytical, logical, scientific side. In cheesy terms, I felt a bond with her because I could easily think of me acting the same way she did in many situations. For me, she was easy to emphatize with, easy to like and very easy to root for.
But this season has been hard to swallow in some respects.
In the words of the Godfather:
(Tremble in awe of my awesome MS Paint skills)
Note that this does not apply to all of Maddie's actions. In fact, the vast majority of her actions this season are no big deal to me and fit her character. Many of the actions Maddie seems to catch a lot of flak for on other parts of the internet seem perfectly justifiable to me as they do not go against the core traits of her character.
I have no issues with many major decisions Maddie made this season, including but not limited to:
She is totally right to re-evaluate her relationship with Ben. Everybody should probably do so when their boyfriend confesses that he let somebody intentionally drown. (It also is not the first time they have broken up. One breakup per season seems to be the norm with those two, not the exception.)
Her hiding the fact of Ryn being her girlfriend to Robb was the right and logical choice. Most people do not talk about their sexuality in face-to-face situations with strangers. Let’s remember that they all agreed to hide their relationship even when having dinner with Ben's family...so why would people expect Maddie to refer to Ryn as her girlfriend to strangers?
I am also okay with her deciding to pursue a relationship with Robb. Even though I view him as a giant waste of screentime he seems like a good guy in total. (I really hope his introduction pays off in future seasons because right now it feels as if he has taken double or triple the screentime he should.)
I could go on but I feel the point has been made. What I am however definitely not okay with are the instances where Maddie acts like a complete idiot. Those show a massive failure to respect established character traits by the writers.
Because one thing Maddie Bishop is not is an idiot.
She probably is the smartest character on the whole show. And she is definitely not a hypocrite - in fact, her strong moral core is what made her that great of a character in Season 1 and 2.
Let me just highlight a few situation this season where I disliked heavily how Maddie was written.
II. Revealing the secrets of the Sirens and their existence to a total stranger ?
“Remember this big secret people are literally getting killed over? I wonder if I should talk about it to this guy I met for a few coffees...not like letting other people knowing about it has ever hurt somebody....Ian? What is an Ian?”
Over the span of a few days, Maddie does the following in Season 3:
Reveal information about the Sirens to a total stranger, even going so far as to show him secret Siren history in the cave
Bring a complete stranger into the maritime laboratory (what exactly could have been her thought process here, what did she hope to gain by this?)
Doing the above despite being repeatedly warned not to do so
I can live with Ben being an idiot and refusing to heed warnings until it almost kills him because that is who his character is - somebody who lets his emotion, empathy and character flaws get the better of him at times despite his good intentions. Him taking stem cells is thus consistent with his character and at the very least a justifiable writers decision. To a lesser degree this also applies to Ryn and her total lack of impulse control. Ben and Ryn making bad decisions it is very consistent with their characters - and yes, this even applies to making stupid decisions. (For Ryn, agreeing to work with the military in Episode 207 “Entrapment” is but one example).
But this is NOT Maddie and never was.
The Maddie from previous seasons was so very invested in keeping the secret that she hid it from her own father in Season 1. This led to the awesome scene between her, her father Dale and Ryn In episode 107: “Dead in the water”.
She hid this secret from her own mother in Season 2 (heck, she even hid her relationship with Ryn from her). She hid Ryn from her best friends, her former boyfriend and her coworker. And yet, suddenly some stranger from outside town waltzes in and within the span of a few coffee dates she goes and spills the beans to him? After being explicitly warned not to do so? Without even being in a relationship with Robb at that point and knowing next to nothing about him? If you had held a gun to my head and forced me to pick somebody who would be dumb enough to just reveal the secret of the Sirens to outsiders, Maddie Bishop never would have been my answer.
I could see Ben “Bad Judgement” Pownall and Ryn “No brakes on this train” Fisher doing so. I expect Xander and Calvin to be trash at keeping secrets because that is consistent with their past behaviour. But Maddie? No. Not Maddie. Not the girl who hid her mother’s addiction from the world as best she could. Not the woman who was okay keeping Ryn a secret from her own father. And not to a total stranger.
This is Ben-level stupidity. Actually, it is worse than that. Blabbing about the mermaids to a total stranger without being under any kind of duress is by far the most stupid thing any character has ever done in this show. It risks not only Maddie herself, but also the Sirens as a species. It is even worse than Xander telling Nicole about Helen's family burials at the end of season 2. It is irresponsible and completely outside Maddie's established character traits and her past actions. It is unbelievable.
III. Killing is different when my (animal) girlfriend does it
Besides turning her into an idiot, the writers also turned Maddie into a hypocrite in stating Ryn letting Ian drown is different than Ben doing the same. Nevermind the fact that Ryn has actively killed people (and probably will continue doing so).
(Why is it different when two people react exactly the same?Because.....reasons. The best reasons. People tell me they are the best reasons. My uncle went to MIT and invented these reasons. Big brain time.)
So the writers had Maddie claim it is different when Ryn does exactly the same thing as Ben. It also is okay for Ryn to kill somebody who was no real threat to Ryn (or Maddie with Ryn being there). Remember when Ryn killed the drug dealer in Episode 205? Ryn was toying with the guy throughout the whole fight and clearly enjoyed killing him in a brutal manner. She even grins during the fight once she realizes the guy has no chance against her.
And yet, Maddie was okay with this. But it is not okay for Ben to let somebody drown who was a) a homocidal maniac who used his car as a deadly weapon, having attempted to run Ben over twice previously b) somebody who could not be trusted c) who had just kidnapped a drugged-up Ryn.
I cannot remember when I ever groaned in frustration at anything Maddie had done or said throughout the course of the show. This must have been the first time and it is especially jarring in response to the following scene in 206:
(Ryn does not. The writers might.) As I said above, I am more than okay with Maddie evaluating her relationship with Ben, what I am not okay with is her immediate declaration that Ryn killing people is different...because she is Ryn? And I hate how it has one particularly ugly implication - that to Maddie, Ryn killing people is just what she does. The conclusion to be drawn from that is that Ryn is indeed a predator/animal first to Maddie than a human being.
And this is obviously inconsistent with Maddie's earlier actions.
First, she did not mind somebody eliminating threats before. She was okay with potentially having to hurt people in order to defeat the sonic cannon in Season 2. She was “willing to fight” to protect Ryn and her species. And several times Maddie carried loaded guns and was ready to use them herself in the series.
She also always believed in Ryn's humanity. I am sure the many scenes between Ryn and Maddie in Season 1 and 2 are fresh in everyone's mind. Suffice to say that Maddie has always believed in the humanity of Ryn, starting with the car scene between the two in Episode 102 or the trust scene in Episode 103, which I have linked below.
youtube
(and where did this dynamic go btw?) Which ties in neatly with my next point:
IV. The Marginalization of Maddie regarding Ryn and Ben
Let me start by saying that breaking up the trio to focus on Ben/Ryn (and probably continuing to focus on those two) is not something I want to critize from a storytelling perspective. Final judgement on the storytelling will be reserved until the end of the series. As this issue is inextricably linked with “shipping” preferences, I think at this point I have to explain where I stand on the issue. I would prefer Polymarine as I think it really fits the characters best...but I can live with Ben/Ryn. This is in no small part due to Eline Powell and Alex Roe doing some of their greatest work on this show playing off each other. See for example how in Episode 306 they improvised with her hair sticking to his body after a hug and turned that into a tender gesture...great impromptu acting without breaking character. If the writers want to explore this (or any other) relationship further I can respect that decision from a storytelling perspective because I think the payoff will be satisfying to me as a viewer. Even though I feel it would have been better to explore Ben/Ryn in the context of Polymarine I begrudgingly accept the right of the writers to tell the story the way they want to.
And If nothing else it leads to stunning visuals - image credit to @crayonboxhearts, more gifs from this scene at the link.
But I dislike the way in which the writers set it up and executed it this season because (as outlined above) it sacrificed some of Maddie’s core character tenets and had her acting out of character.
Having the trio become a duo on its own in an organic way without the above would have been preferable IMO. There were enough angles the writers could have chosen to facilitate that in a believable manner. They could have focused on the connection Ryn has with Ben, they could have had family reasons...et cetera pp. And they also could have used some of the issues Maddie has in her own past to justify a breakup. All of this would have been (IMO) preferable to what we got.
What we got was something that felt as if it was written to check some boxes to set up the future plotlines and in doing so marginalized Maddie with regards to her importance to Ryn, Ben and the overall story.
Granted, the show tried to show Maddie and Ryn's feelings for each other and they spent some time showing Ben moping after her - but in light of the significant strides made in the Ben/Ryn dynamic these scenes feel more than a bit hollow.
And anybody who has watched episodes 308 could just see the role of Maddie as it relates to interacting with Ryn and Ben getting smaller by the minute. Ryn and Ben now have their own little circle, one which only seems to include Maddie on the periphery. Nowhevere was this stronger on display than in Episode 308, with Ben and Ryn making lifelong promises to each other.
Ryn: “I will live on Land. With you.” Ben: “On land. You mean, stay human?” Ryn: “Yes. Here. Together. Human.” Ben: “What about Hope?” Ryn: “She can be with us. As a family.” Ben: “I can’t ask you to do that.” Ryn: “It is my choice. When it is time, I will be human with you.”
Notice how Maddie was not even mentioned once during that conversation? And yes maybe it would have been a bit weird to include her in the dialogue . However this is not an isolated incident. Later on Maddie is not even in the same frame when Ryn and Ben actually exchange a wedding ring and make a “til death do us part” promise. Let me repreat this: They are exchanging wedding vows and Maddie is not even in the frame.
(Yes, technically not wedding vows, but only due to the circumstances surrounding them - the sentiment and meaning was there. FFS, she is even wearing white).
And sometimes it is something as simple as Ryn in 308 kissing Maddie on the cheeks and Ben straight on the lips.
There could not have been a more clearer message than the contrast here. And this was clearly intentional on part of the director considering these frames followed each other immediately.
And then of course we get the followup scene on the docks where Ben is literally standing in the middle between Maddie and Ryn, before turning and following Ryn, both leaving Maddie behind. Observe the contrast between that scene and the pier scene in Episode 203.
203:
308:
(Ngl,seeing her standing alone there in the dark hurt) And some of that can be viewed as a logical development of Maddie no longer being in a relationship with Ben (and whatever kind of relationship Maddie has with Ryn, it is clear that Ryn is not staying at Maddie’s place at all). Siren has always been about the relationship of the main characters within the tight-knit circle and it is clear that at this point in the story Maddie is not part of the inner circle anymore.
V: Maddie’s role in the story
And if Maddie would be doing something else, something central to the story of Bristol Cove, something that would valiate her character and make her essential to the plot in other ways, it might be enough for me or at least end up softening the blow. But is that the case?
The side characters that have the closest connection with her (Dale and her mother Susan) have not even appeared once this season. And we had Xander replace her in her role as the gun-carrying backup which Ben calls first when stuff goes down in episode 306. So far there has not been a critical “Maddie moment” this season that was absolutely essential to the plot. She figured out the reason why the pool was not working in Episode 307 but it was Ben who came up with an actual solution to the problem.
(A caveat: Ben usually is the one who figures out solutions in the show (cf 208) so I might just be overreacting here.) But what exactly is left of the crucial role that Maddie had at the start of this season? Is she still as important as the other two main characters with regards to story development? I really hope the Finale will make me look like a fool for even asking that question. But I hate having arrived at a point where it even is a question once can ask legitimately.
VI: Previous acts of plot
This is not the first time the writers have decided to ignore established character traits in order to tell a certain story. I have written before how it made no sense for certain storylines of Season 2 to play out the way they did in Episode 214 and 215 - except in the context of them serving the overarching plot.
Specifically, Ryn not knowing Ben's last name despite living together for weeks and months and suddenly going haywire after hearing it made little sense. And yet it was clear why it had to happen - because the writers wanted to tell a specific story. (A longer argument for what happpened and why can be found in the middle of this post if you do not want to take my word for it.) They wanted to do so because it led to great payoffs for the viewer:
1) We had an awesome discussion between Maddie and Ryn in Episode 214
(Remember how emotionally intelligent Maddie was in that situation? Where did scenes like that go?)
2.) It led to several great scenes between Ben and Ryn and also provided further justification for Ben’s choices in 216.
In retrospect, the plot contrivances of 214 were done by writer's fiat to setup a scenario that would test the relationship of the trio. This created more drama and paved the way for a satisfying payoff at the end of Episode 215/216. In doing so, the writers allowed character inconsistencies and plot contrivances to steer the story towards a predetermined outcome, to the detriment of character logic and past character developments.
And we can see a similar trend developing here. The end goal of the writers seems to have been the rock scene between Ben and Ryn at the end of Episode 308.
And if you assume this to be the end goal in the current plot development...if the goal was to focus on Ben and Ryn...then there needs to be a breakup. Because huge parts of the storyline (stemcells, them going swimming, them making promises to each other etc.) do not work with Maddie in the picture.
But was it necessary to sacrifice parts of her character and have her acting in a manner inconsistent with her established traits in order to do so? (Maybe they had to rush it because of lack of episode time, but then why waste so much time on Robb and Helen’s ghost stories?).
And there is another problem: The success of this plot development will heavily depend on whether it will fit the personal preferences of the viewership. As I said above, while I would have preferred Polymarine I can live with and enjoy Ben/Ryn or Maddie/Robb.
But for die-hard polymarine and Maddie/Ryn shippers, I feel the results might be somewhat different. And this is only made worse by Maddie being unfairly treated by the writers in order to facilitate the overall plot development. I suspect many Maddie fans (regardless of their shipping preference) will have been disheartened about how the writers made Maddie behave this season.
I know I was.
VII: The parallels between Episodes 108 and 308 - and why they worry me
And there is another meta-reason why I am deeply worried about Maddie and her role going forward. And this has to do with the way in which Siren’s previous ten-episode season has been set up. In Season 1, it was Episode 108 that cemented the character development happening in that season. Episodes 109 and 110 served to defeat the big bad of the season and to introduce temporary setbacks that had to be solved at the start of the following season before the characters returned to the dynamics establied in 108.
In short, while Episodes 9 and 10 were exciting, Episode 8 of Season 1 is the pivotal episode of the season. Ryn’s desire to learn and to stay on land, her first steps into human society...all those happened in that episode. There are also strong parallels in the way 108 and 308 treated Ryn’s relationship with Ben, even ending their screentime in the episode with a impactful scene between the two (”Will you sing to me” / “Til death do us part”). Other parallels include both episodes featuring an important event in a human’s life (a wake/a marriage), both episodes involving the whole Bristol Cove community etc.
And like 108, 308 was (IMO) a near-perfect episode in terms of performances, pivotal scenes and dialogue. Just by the sheer number of extras, costumes etc. involved the writers clearly wanted it to be important. And it was important. It greatly drove forward the plot and I personally rate it as one of my favourite episodes of the show on its own for that reason.
But there is one major difference that seperates 108 and 308: Maddie was very much still in the picture (literally) and a plot-driving force in her own right.
And this worries me.
I expect the final two episodes will be about defeating the big bad of the season, as it was with Season 1. Maybe the season will even end the same way as Season 1 - with Ryn being on her own for a bit. Maybe she even goes back to the water for a longer time (or is forced to do so due to circumstances). But I also expect character development in season 4 to largely use 308 as its base.
And now you can see why I am getting concerned here about Maddie’s diminished role. I really hope the writers have not forgotten what a wonderful character they created in her and find better ways to use her in season 4.
There are plenty of options within Siren to give her meaningful screentime again (her spending more time with Xander and Calvin for example would also give more screentime to those two, which I would love to see). But whatever the writers chose to do in the future, I really hope that it does not involve Maddie acting out of character again.
Conclusion:
The way the writers wrote Maddie in Season 3 is not something that I agree with, nor does her diminished role in the central dynamics of the story sit well with me. Did it completely ruin the show for me? No. The mysteries of the sirens, the Pownell family saga, the question of whether Ryn has to permanently return to the sea, her child and the whole Ryn/Ben dynamic kept me entertained - and will do so in the future.
But Maddie being this off-base and not being in the main picture definitely does diminish the show for me - and I think I am not alone in this. When I look at the failed opportunities for her character it saddens me in a major way. Even though Season 3 is still an enjoyable and entertaining season for me, it could have been much more.

Survey #256
song lyrics here.
Would you date someone who still lived with their parents? Well considering I still live with my mother, I'd be quite the hypocrite if otherwise. Are you a generous person? I personally think so. Do you have a close relationship with your family? With my mom, extremely. Do you think there is life on other planets? Well, define "life," I suppose. Bacteria, stuff like that that science defines as life, yes. Complex life, I don't know. Would you enjoy a night of playing video games? Fuck yeah. Are you sexually attracted to any inanimate objects? ???? No. Would you watch a porno with your partner? UH NO I'm personally not at all interested in porn, and I feel it'd be awkward anyway? Have you ever stolen from your work? No. How much does intelligence turn you on? I guess like your average person that finds intelligence attractive. Do you ask someone out or wait for them to ask you? History shows it varies. Do you own any sex toys? No. Do you talk about your sex life with either of your parents? Well I don't have one now, but historically, I very timidly have with my mom about something. Generally though, I don't. I keep that very private. Do you search someone on the Internet before a first date? No. How often do you use Facebook at work? I'm unemployed. Do you enjoy television or movies better? That's hard, but maybe movies. I don't really watch either, but movies, when they have a good plot, are usually more enjoyable. Would you consider donating your body to science after you die? Sure thing. I personally want to donate my organs and have the rest cremated, though. Are you a romantic person? Yeah. Would you be okay with your partner hanging with their ex as friends? It would seriously depend on the depth of their relationship, where they're hanging out, how long... that kind of stuff. I am very serious about letting your partner have friends, including w/ the gender they're interested in, so I try to be open-minded here. Are you careful with your money? It's hard to even say with how seldom I have any. Do you like to be friends with someone before dating them? Absolutely. Do you like soccer? No. Is it more fun to go out just with your date or on a group date? Depends. I'd say I USUALLY prefer uhhh... single dates? How often do you go dancing/clubbing? Never. Is marriage a necessity for two people who love each other? Uh, no. Do you meditate? No. Have you ever been fired from a job? No. Is there anything you think science will never be able to explain? The soul. Do you cook fancy meals for dates? I don't cook. You don't want me to. Is intoxication ever an acceptable excuse for acting stupid? Fuck no. Do you believe in an afterlife? Probably. Do you litter? NO. Would you have sex with someone hot who you hated? nO????????????? Do you have a career plan? Kinda, but who knows when the fuck that's coming true. There’s other ways to be intimate, including ones that don’t involve being sexual at all." <<<< Exactly this. Have you ever played strip poker? No. How often do you get angry? "I’m someone who gets irritated, moody, upset, and frustrated often, but not angry." <<<< Also this. Do you consider yourself an emotional person? VERY MUCH SO. Is work important to you? Considering how harshly I shit on myself for not having a job, most certainly. Have you had cosmetic surgery? No. On a first date do you pay or do they? In every experience but with Sara, they did. I only paid on Sara's and my first date out of trickery lmao. Do you only date people who have jobs or are full-time students? No. Could you date someone who does drugs? Nope. Medical marijuana is fine, though. Have you ever been to a sex shop? No. Have you ever had a threesome? Nah. Do you enjoy discussing politics? Noooo. Would you do a striptease for your partner? WHOA I would feel WAY too awkward gd. Would you date someone who doesn’t have a car? Yeah. Is it wrong to watch porn if you’re in a relationship? That depends on the people in it. Some mind, some don't. Idk how I'd feel it if was my partner. Do you think men should pay for everything on dates? Hi, it's 2020. Women don't need to be "taken care of." Would you tie up a partner if they asked you to do so? Yeah. Have you ever had sex in a public place? No. Would you date someone twice your age? No. Should a child caught masturbating be punished? It'd be weird at a certain age, but no. It's normal to explore sexuality and what you like, and perhaps even more importantly, it's way better for you to let your sexual urges out privately versus... you know. Being forceful on others. Do you tell your friends you love them? Of course!! Maybe it's just how I was brought up, but I've always gotten kinda confused when (particularly good) friends don't. Love is platonic just as much as it is romantic, and you should let people know! Do you like playing tic-tac-toe? I mean, I guess? What about hangman? It's more fun than the former. Did you play hopscotch when you were younger? Yeah. Did your older sibling ever tell you freaky stories that you believed? I remember at least one. Do you have a yahoo account? It exists, but I haven't touched it in an eternity. I don't even remember the password. Are you a violent person? Definitely not. Do your siblings dye their hair? Not really. They occasionally get highlights, though. Do you still have any of your exes’ stuff? Besides gifted stuff, no. I think. Who can you best relate to in the last book you read? That I finished, Clay. Roman and Venus. Gah, I need more bbz. What did your first best friend look like? Last I've seen a picture of her, she was a somewhat bigger person with long, curly brown hair, and she's always been very tan. Did you have a role model growing up? Steve Irwin. If you could learn how to play one instrument, what would it be? Guitar. Is your best friend dating anyone? Do you like them? No. Do you want to move? Very badly, and we probably are soon. Do you have a big family? My extended family is giant. Do you want more or less siblings? I'm happy with what I have. What is your idea of perfect happiness? Great contentment in all I do. Surrounded by love, changing the world in even tiny ways, etc. What is the trait you most deplore (dislike) in yourself? I realized it semi-recently and honestly don't want to share it. Only my old therapist knows, I think. Besides that one, the fact I'm very impulsive with words when I'm upset, probably. What is your greatest extravagance? I'm really creative and passionate. What do you consider the most overrated virtue? Probably the glorification of virginity. I would know. It was a MASSIVE DEAL for most of my teenage years. On what occasion do you lie? When it's a thing where I feel it's just better to not be honest. Now I honor honesty a lot, so I avoid it as much as possible, but no, I don't believe it's always the best policy. What do you most dislike about your appearance? My weight. Which living person do you most despise? I don't know about one specific person. The traumatized part of me says Jason's friend that encouraged him to break up with me, but I know I rightfully shouldn't even dislike him, save for the fact he was pretty arrogant. What or who is the greatest love of your life? I don't know. When and where were you the happiest? Well, it depends. If you mean in a specific moment of most intense happiness, lots of times with Jason. An extended period of happiness, early into recovery when I lived with Colleen. What do you consider your greatest achievement? Recovering from the breakup. If you were to die and come back as a person or a thing, what would it be? A house cat. Seems like a pretty good life. What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery? At least from my experiences, harsh rejection when you try your best to please that person. What do you value most in your friends? As far as a sweeping characteristic they all share, the will to listen and just be there for me in times I really need companionship. Who are your favorite writers? I don't really have favorites. Who is your hero of fiction? Hm, I dunno. Which historical figure do you most identify with? Uhhhh I also don't really know. I'm not enough of a history buff for this. Who are your heroes in real life? I answer this enough. What are your favorite names? Alessandra and Severin. Do you like watching reruns? No. What do you think is worth waiting for? Deep relationships. Should parenting classes be mandatory for new parents? No. What is the number one thing people are always asking you for help with? English/writing. What movie did you love the original but hated the sequel to? I remember the Ghost Rider sequel was nothing compared to the original. It was okay, but. Are you more talk and less action or vice versa? More talk. Have you ever given someone a handmade present? Yeah, especially as a kid. What type of person angers you the most? Probably those who can't put their pride aside for anything. What do you think should be a wonder of the world that currently isn’t? I don't even know what they all are to get a proper grasp on the question. What comforts you on bad days? My mom and Sara, sleep, YouTube, sometimes regrettably food, etc. Do you treat yourself and your body with respect? Not very well. Something you eat that other people would find gross. *shrugs* Nothing that's too weird. Have you ever broken the law and didn’t get caught, if so how? Yeah, and obviously by not screaming it to the world, but also because none are massive. Something you fear might change you. The aftermath of heartbreak. It still affects me today and makes me see less hope in love. What personality trait in people raises a red flag with you? Volatility. Have you ever resented someone, if so what for? "Stealing" Jason, and the other person for accusing me something of so fucking selfish and vile I don't even like saying it, especially when she was my damn therapist that I loved and trusted. How old do you think is too old to have a baby? "Old enough that getting pregnant would cause significant harm to you or the baby." <<<< How have you changed over the last five years? I've definitely become wiser and more open-minded. Have you ever painted a house? Nope. Have you ever had a surprise party (that was an actual surprise)? No. What makes you feel miserable? Eating badly (particularly too much sugar makes me feel shitty), doing nothing/extended boredom. What’s the best costume you’ve ever worn? Don't have a clue. What’s been the hardest loss you’ve had to take? Jason. A loss without actual death is, wow, awful. I mean death is too, but holy shit it hurts when that person chooses to leave you. Do you like sunny days or rainy days more? Depends on the temperature and my mood. Who is your favorite movie director and what’s your favorite movie from them? Tim Burton, of course. Alice In Wonderland. What is the furthest you’ve ever got a paper airplane to fly? Not very far. Nothing impressive. Do you like the person you are becoming? It depends on the context. Honestly, by this point, not really. What’s the highest you’ve ever jumped into the water from? Not high at all. What inspires your ideas? More than anything, music. Just a single lyric, sometimes one word, spawns a sometimes very complex concept. Have you ever assembled furniture by yourself? No. Have you ever bolstered your resume to get a job you really wanted? No. I have a really, really hard time lying for a job. Have you ever had an internship, if not what would be your dream intern job? No. Do you prefer chicken, beef, or seafood? Chicken. Have you ever had a health scare? Yes. What do or did you hate the most about dating or the dating process? Opening up again. What do you frown upon when it comes to raising kids? Spanking. Have you ever been professionally photographed? Yeah. Do you influence people more than they influence you? I very much doubt that. If you could ask one person, alive or dead, only one question, what would you ask? If he regrets me. Do you buy anything organic, if so, what is it? I don't think so? What was the name of the first album you ever bought and who was it by? I believe it was You're Awful, I Love You by Ludo. Do you have any prejudices you’ve admitted to yourself? No. Who is the very first friend you ever remember making and how old were you? Brianna; I was two. What makes you lose sleep? Stress. Anxiety. PTSD. Do you floss or use a toothpick when food gets stuck in your teeth? I floss. Have you ever made out in a bathroom? Pretty sure that's a negative. Ever physically fought with member of the opposite sex? YIKES no. Well, besides playfighting. Ever walked in on your friends having sex? No. Ever kissed a friend’s crush? No. Has anyone ever called cops on you? No. Do you swallow gum when you’re finished? Noooo that's so uncomf. Ever tackled someone to the ground? Not in a way that was a harsh fall. More like a crumbling to the floor. Where was the last place you fell asleep other than your bed? Hm. Maybe in the school library, but I doubt that, really. I don't think I ever actually fell asleep. Did the last person you kiss have piercings? No. Did your parents spoil you as a child? No. Have you ever had alcohol poisoning? No. Ever thrown up in public? Yes. Has anyone laid on your bed besides you? Yes. What bothers you more, when people lie or when people complain? Depends on the severity. I think lying is more hurtful, though. How many bracelets do you have on your wrists right now? Three. Who took your profile picture on Facebook? Me. Do you sleep on a certain side of the bed? More towards the left. Has anyone ever drunk called/texted you? No. Would you ever date anyone your parents disapproved of? Yeah. I'd consider their reasonings, of course, but it's my decision.

What Universe does Thor: Ragnarok Take Place In? Part Two
I repeat my disclaimer from the last post in this series. If you don’t want to see criticism of Thor: Ragnarok, then a) don’t read, b) filter your tags, c) block me, or d) any combination of the previous.
For Part Two I’ll explain the characterization discrepancies between Thor: Ragnarok’s characters and those it shares through the MCU. These characters are Thor, Loki, Odin, and Bruce Banner.
(No, I didn’t forget Heimdall and the Warriors Three. I don’t see any issues with Ragnarok’s portrayal of Heimdall—correct me if I’m wrong, I’d love to discuss it—and unfortunately we don’t have enough time with the Warriors Three to tell.)
I’ll start with pre-Ragnarok Thor.
Thor, as I pointed out in Part One, has a violent temper, and his recklessness endangers his brother and friends. He starts out Thor (2011) arrogant enough to try to pull rank on Odin. He cajoles his friends into joining him on dangerous missions. He tends to look down on Loki, but doesn’t visibly enjoy seeing him in pain, and cares what happens to his brother to some degree (he’s distraught when Loki seemingly dies in both Thor movies, and saves Loki from the implosion bomb). He eventually learns to cool his temper to some degree (come later in Thor (2011) and later movies), though he still has lapses (when he Mjolnirs Tony for getting between him and Loki, then Cap for telling him to drop Mjolnir in Avengers (2012); when he nearly punches Loki in the face in TDW, when he chokes Tony in AOU). He learns to talk things out before fighting (he talks to the Kronan in TDW before they...uh, fight, and he tries to talk down Ultron in AOU with “no one needs to break anything”). Thor starts to question Odin’s authority (when Odin basically says he’d let all of Asgard die if it meant killing the rest of the Dark Elves in TDW) and defy his decisions. He takes situations seriously when they warrant it (note his face when Ultron starts snarking). He cares about Jane quite a lot (he gets her notebook back in Thor (2011), comes to Earth when he thinks she’s in danger in TDW, and brags about her to Tony in AOU).
Now, Ragnarok Thor.
Thor has always patiently put up with Loki’s assaults (will get to these in Loki’s section) without fighting back, losing his temper, or doing anything to prevent them. He openly, shamelessly manipulates Bruce/Hulk (telling each that they’re the one he prefers), Valkyrie (shaming her when she doesn’t want to help him), and Loki (the elevator speech, and the one with the obedience disk). He grins when Loki’s twitching in pain on the ground from the obedience disk, and leaves him there for an unknown length of time where Loki could’ve easily been found and executed. Thor’s back to attacking other realms on suspicions without negotiating (he goes to Muspelheim and kills the king and anyone who tries to protect him). His violence is back—he effectively threatens to smash Loki/Odin’s head in if he doesn’t reveal himself, backs Loki into a couch with Mjolnir to his chest, and looks like he’s about to attack Loki when Odin dies. He’s back to worshiping the ground Odin walks on (after learning that Odin conquered and slaughtered his way through the Nine Realms, he still looks to him for guidance). He quips constantly, no matter the situation (see...the entirety of Ragnarok). He dismisses Jane with a line about a mutual dumping.
Huh?
Loki’s turn.
Loki, as I pointed out in Part One, prefers to negotiate rather than fight, and tends to think ahead. He’s highly intelligent and strategic (he realizes in advance that Thor will get them into trouble on Jotunheim and works out how to get out alive, he realizes that the relics in the vault are stolen, he doesn’t buy Odin’s initial story about taking him in out of compassion, he quickly figures out how to overpower Odin/where to put him/how to get him there/how to get Thor’s friends out of trouble). He has legitimate reasons for everything he does (see Part One). He’s generally loyal to Thor, outside of extreme circumstances like experiencing a mental breakdown or getting anything from coerced to tortured by a mad Titan (his betrayal in Thor (2011) comes as a shock to Thor, and Avengers (2012) didn’t really have anything to do with Thor). After Odin and Frigga lied to him, and Sif, Heimdall, and the Warriors Three betrayed him (as did Thor by agreeing to come with them, technically), Loki doesn’t trust easily, and is always on guard. He refuses to tolerate manipulation from his family (he denies that Frigga is his mother when she makes acknowledging Odin as his father a condition of that, and doesn’t accept for Odin’s hypocrisy). He’s quite skilled at psychological manipulation and lying (he knows exactly what will keep Thor down when he lies that Odin’s dead), and knows how to act (he plays Odin flawlessly enough that Thor doesn’t notice in TDW). He’s anything but lazy (he definitely works at his plans in his first two movies, and in TDW...Svartalfheim and after speaks for itself). He’d make a good ruler (“for all his grave imbalance, Loki understood rule as I know I never will”). After Odin and Thanos, he’s not great with authority figures (he’s...less than respectful of the Other—“if your force is as formidable as you claim”—and he sasses Odin relentlessly in TDW). He feels fear but doesn’t act on it (he’s scared on Jotunheim but fights anyway; he’s scared of the Other but doesn’t run; he’s cool and collected upon his defeat in Avengers (2012); he’s poised with Odin during the trial). He only acts egotistical in Avengers (2012) under the influence of the Mind Stone; otherwise he wants to be accepted as Thor’s equal. He’s genuinely mentally ill (he attempted suicide, and probably has serious PTSD after Thanos—if only the movies showed that kind of thing).
What’s Ragnarok’s Loki like?
Loki’s needlessly violent (the snake story), and has no planning ability whatsoever (he doesn’t have a better plan than ‘get help’). He’s pretty stupid (putting Skurge of all people on Bifrost duty, calling the Bifrost to get away from Hela when she was in Bifrost-range, not noticing the obedience disk, etc.). He doesn’t have a reason for doing anything other than “I’m a trickster, I can’t help myself”. He’s always betrayed Thor compulsively. He’s...not exactly on guard (he doesn’t think to carry a weapon as Odin, and he trusts that the Grandmaster will keep his word and not execute him if he brings in Thor). Loki does what Thor wants when Thor tries emotionally manipulating him. He doesn’t notice when Thor tried reverse psychology on him. He’s terrible at acting (he completely foils Odin’s speech and behavior). He’s remarkably lazy (he’s laying on a couch eating grapes when Thor shows up). He’s pretty bad at ruling (the Nine Realms are in chaos). He’s fairly obedient to authority figures (he ingratiates himself to the Grandmaster and doesn’t talk back once). He’s a bit of a coward (he was scared when Thor showed up, “bring us back”, he’s visibly afraid of the Grandmaster, “I have to get off this planet”). He’s an egomaniac and attention hog (the statue, the play). He “tries...to embody this idea of a tortured artist, this tortured, gothy orphan”—no real problems at all.
Are these supposed to be the same person?!
Okay. Odin.
Odin is massively hypocritical, manipulative liar with tons of blood on his hands (the first part needs no explaining besides “watch the movies”; for the second, Loki first implies, then states outright, that Odin’s responsible for a lot of death, and neither Odin nor Frigga correct him). He doesn’t let Thor make his own choices (he doesn’t even consider that Thor might not want to rule; he wants Thor to be with Sif instead of Jane; he won’t listen to Thor’s suggestions about the Dark Elves). He’s worn down Loki’s self-esteem his whole life by favoring Thor, and he’s outright cruel to Loki later (“No, Loki”; “your birthright was to die”; “Frigga is the only reason you’re still alive and you will never see her again”). He never admits his own faults (he never takes any responsibility for any of the death he’s caused, never admits to the part he played in Loki’s downfall) except to hurt people (“yes, I was a fool—to think that you were ready”). He doesn’t express affection to his sons, and any he has is hugely conditional—as soon as they step out of line, he gives the guards permission to kill them (“by any means necessary!”).
Time for Ragnarok Odin.
Admittedly, he’s still a massively hypocritical, manipulative liar with tons of blood on his hands (see: everything involving Hela). After death, Odin controls Thor’s choices even more than before. He praises Loki aloud (“Frigga would’ve been proud”). He admits a mistake (“I’ve failed you”) in a way that, well, doesn’t immediately hurt anyone. He shows open affection to both Thor and Loki (“I love you, my sons”). He’s generally considered wise and benevolent.
Wait, what?
And now, Bruce. I don’t know as much about him, so his will be short. I’d love to see more on him if anyone has suggestions.
Bruce is very intelligent (he’s a physicist who can keep up with Tony). He’s not panicky; he’s usually quite calm and mild-mannered (see Avengers (2012) and AOU). He hates killing people as Hulk (he’s unhappy after the Hydra bust at the beginning of AOU, and he’s miserable and guilty enough to leave after Johannesburg). After he de-Hulks, he knows he’s most likely killed someone or at least caused a lot of damage.
Then there’s Ragnarok Bruce.
Bruce has 7 PhDs, but his shown intelligence is...questionable: on an alien planet where no one knows who he is, he thinks he’s supposed to disguise himself as Tony Stark. Without Hulk he’s considered useless. He’s openly anxious (“I think I’m freaking out”; his reaction to Sakaar in general). He doesn’t mention the fact that two years straight of being Hulk is probably going to mean a lot of damage and a lot of people dead. He shows no grief or distress due to it.
Yeah...no issues at all....
Odin’s sudden appearance of warmth isn’t without explanation. It could easily be his attempt to make Loki guilty for his anger (since Odin’s last words would’ve seemed kind), thus encouraging him to help with Hela to make up for it. Other than that, they’re irreconcilable.
Thor cannot be both sadistic and non-sadistic.
Loki cannot be both completely stupid and smart.
Odin cannot be both “wise and benevolent” and cruel and controlling.
Bruce cannot be both ignorant of the damage Hulk causes and deeply distraught over it.
These sets of traits cannot exist in the same characters in the same universe without reasons for the change within that universe. Ragnarok provides no such reason, which creates a stark gap in continuity.
There is no cinematic universe without continuity.
Ragnarok clearly disregards the canon of the MCU. Therefore, it cannot be part of that universe.
As I’ve suggested to @lucianalight, I propose that we use the term “Ragnarok Cinematic Universe,” or RCU, for all movies that use Ragnarok’s personal canon.

Rant on RCD
Normally I don't rant about stuff because doing so feeds negativity, but Red Carpet Diaries continues to nag my mind. I know it's a story most people, including me, hate, but I also think it had potential. Note: In this post, I'm using the name Jessica to refer to the MC, as that's her default name. Also, this post is pretty much personal opinion.
Initial Expectations
For starters, I don't mind the concept about being an up-and-coming actress trying to work her way up to stardom, the underbelly of the film industry, and the relationships she builds up from the bottom. In fact, it has the potential to have some variety if it focuses on building up one's career from the ground up properly, like gradually climbing from the bottom and learning a lot from experience along the way.
Reality
The execution, however, destroyed my expectations. Even though my interest in this story started decreasing since about Chapter 5, Chapter 8 is when I officially dislike this series because of Markus von Groot upgrading Jessica's supporting role to a lead one in Tender Nothings without much effort shown. This reeks of Mary Sue vibes that also makes me dislike her as quickly as I dislike the series, which dragged too long with little substance along the way. After all, it shouldn't be easy to get a lead role, and to see Jessica doing it without getting through so much of the trouble actors go through sends a bad message that you don't have to do much to get to the top. This applies to all professions instead of just acting.
I also notice people's complaints that the HWU characters are sidelined, but since I've never played the game, I wouldn't want them to hog the story. What they could've been is having the same level of significance as the HSS characters from the original app: supporting characters at the most while the new cast continues to dominate the spotlight, just like the HSS series in Choices.
One character I utterly despise is Markus von Groot. He shows unprofessional behavior towards others like attacking them for their insecurities, wasting resources and other people's efforts by rewriting scenes at the last minute (hypocritical of him because he claims to value practicality), and valuing property over people. I also hold him responsible for making Jessica a Mary Sue and singlehandedly ruining my enthusiasm for this series. He's also a pretentious snob who looks down on others for not having the same level of "intelligence" as him, which points out to his massive ego. Not to mention that his disorganized way of directing the movie shows how useless he is in the end. It was good riddance that he never came back for Tender Nothings.
The last scene of Chapter 12 is, without a doubt, controversial. Thank goodness the writers changed Victoria's reaction from a physical attack to a verbal one, but the damage had already been done, and I blame Pixelberry for daring to write such a scene like this in the first place while not doing so to acerbic male love interests. Now, this comes as a shock to others, but when I first played the scene, the person I was angriest at wasn't Victoria, but Markus. Honestly, Victoria has the right to react angrily at betrayal, whether real or suspected, though having her physically assault Jessica is too much. As for Markus, there's trouble brewing among the cast members, yet he gets mad not because of a quarrel breaking out but because a priceless painting gets destroyed. I get that such a painting is valuable, but diffusing tensions, which he never did, is a much higher priority than a broken painting. Can't he just take a good look at the mirror and realize all the blunders he committed towards other people? It doesn't help that he insulted the actors and studio executives evaluating his work, which he has no right to do. That makes him the ultimate asshole in the scene.
Inner Circle, particularly the Love Interests
I like that all of the love interests are unique in their own ways. Each have their own personalities, backstories, and struggles. Matt wants to prove Hollywood that he can be a versatile actor. Seth talks about getting rejected for his ideas. Teja has to put up with feeling unappreciated for all the hard work she has done. Victoria struggles with sexism and ageism in an industry that treats women as expendable despite the skills they've built up. All these prove that they are much more than meets the eye.
As for which love interest that fascinates me, that would be Victoria Fontaine. She's the best LI in the series as well as the only one I like, though moderately. Look, I know she started with a rocky relationship with Jessica, but that doesn't mean I excuse the bad things she has done. In fact, I disapprove of her mind games during Jessica's audition. Even if characters are supposed to be flawed, they should make amends for their mistakes, and she's no exception, such as burying the hatchet, which is what she did (albeit in a premium option). She also acknowledges her own shortcomings, such as criticizing the tension between them as unprofessional. She even apologized immediately for the verbal assault when she had the chance. What seals her as the only love interest I like is that she's aware of reality's harshness and gives good advice on celebrity life and some scenes for Tender Nothings, in part because she has a good amount of depth in many of her scenes, whether free or premium. For example, she works in an industry where women are treated as commodities with a short shelf life. Directors and tabloids judge her by her appearance and disregard her acting skills, prompting her to prove them wrong, swallow her pride when working with Jessica, and surprisingly make efforts. It doesn't justify her initial hostility, but what it does is that it gives sense to her actions. It's far too easy to demonize her just because of personal bias against certain character "types", but doing so is a disservice to her character by assuming she's a one-dimensional character, which she isn't and shouldn't be. After all, she provides the harsh reality of the film industry looking down on women.
Knowing Pixelberry's disregard for its female characters, my anger's directed at the writers for doing her a grave injustice, such as giving her a very negative first impression, delaying the progress of her storyline in favor of unnecessary screen time with Matt, and paywalling her, up to and including her involvement in the movie. All because of her gender and Pixelberry's blatant pandering to their target audience without regard to the story's quality. This post essentially sums up Pixelberry's mishandling of such a well-crafted character. I get that Pixelberry is ultimately a business, but in an app explicitly titled Choices and focused on telling stories, nothing can justify this mistreatment of a character with a good deal of depth in her just for the sake of pandering to your target demographic.
Unfortunately, all love interests have uneven screen time. Matt continues hogging the spotlight even though most of his screen time is pointless fanservice. Seth and Teja don't have a lot to offer, while Victoria has the least, and not enough to progress the story in a meaningful way. Honestly, Pixelberry made a mistake by adding too much screen time for Matt without addressing him as a character. Sure he's nice, but most of that screen time should be given to other love interests, particularly Victoria because of her story having a slow progress. By lavishing all attention on him at the cost of other love interests, Pixelberry has created a self-fulfilling prophecy that discourages players to pursue other love interests not favored by Pixelberry, and this has been going on in various stories.
As for Chazz, he's the only member of Jessica's inner circle that I dislike. For a best friend, he comes across as unreliable, such as lying about his house and job to his own best friend. I get that there are times that he's helpful, such as giving moral support to her when she was down, but his job as her agent means he has to be sincere at all times, even if it means giving the unflattering parts of his life and career.
Book 2
Fast forward to Book 2, and we get a warning about mature themes in this book. Sounds exciting that RCD will tackle serious issues in the film industry inspired by the #MeToo movement, yay?
Unfortunately, it's badly executed. At first, it seems alright. Viktor Montmartre established himself as a threat by attacking Jessica and using his power to make her career and even life as miserable as possible. After all, that's what a villain should be portrayed as. However, he more or less remains on the background while using Tommy Phelps as his proxy to do his dirty work, which makes it hard for me to think of him as a real threat throughout the story. Even worse, the last third of Book 2 turned the book from a mildly interesting plot regarding an important issue into a nostalgia filler for characters I don't know. Not only does this left me confused, but disappointed. In the end, it irritates me that Viktor Montmartre receives a mere slap on the wrist by being hounded by paparazzi. Why can't he be put in jail instead? It's a huge disservice to people who have experienced this kind of stuff, considering the amount of effort and pain they went through to get their story heard.
Even the love interests were done dirty. Matt, who spent Book 1 proving his versatility as an actor, ends up in an action movie again, even though he's playing the villain this time. Look, I get that action movies are his specialization, but would it be better if he tries something that doesn't throw his efforts to waste for once? It doesn't help that him starring in the same movie as Jessica means he ends up hogging the spotlight again until Chapter 10. Seth finally gets to work with Teja, who gets to direct her own movie. Unfortunately, they end up bickering like kids while expecting Jessica to take one side over the other. This is a far cry from their personalities back in Book 1, where they were sensible and addressed serious issues of their respective careers. It's like the writers decided they no longer cared for both of them and screwed their personalities. Victoria is shoved aside to a movie of her own and given no storyline, rendering her superfluous, which is another huge disservice done to her, especially since it's revealed that her experience resembles Jessica's the most. That could've given her some opportunity to help Jessica in a major way while not imposing her as the main love interest. All this happened just to build up Thomas Hunt, a character from the HWU app, as a love interest. As someone who has never played that game, I wonder why he should be a love interest even though he already has a story that paid its due, especially since he may already have a love interest to someone who isn't Jessica in some people's games, which made me uncomfortable. Not to mention that she never knew him on a personal level in Chapter 10. It was a no-brainer for me to reject him.
Chazz does yet another thing that proves how much I dislike him. Instead of quitting when his own best friend got attacked, he quitted when Matt got injured even though he wasn't responsible for Matt. If he is really Jessica's best friend, he would've quitted right after she got attacked. Some friend...
As for the HWU characters finally becoming supporting characters during the last third of Book 2, it gets ruined by the Viktor Montmartre arc, which addresses an important issue, getting sidelined. It gets worse with Thomas Hunt becoming a love interest just to pander to nostalgic HWU players while ignoring the important issue that is sexual harassment in the film industry. Look, I get that there are people who have played HWU who want to see more of them, but it shouldn't be done at the cost of the storyline, especially one that addresses an important issue.
And what about Apricott Persimmon and Chadley Fortnum? Honestly, I agree with this post that Apricott's insecurities should've been hinted at early during her debut and developed throughout her screen time instead of dumped at the last moment possible as a buildup to a premium option. Doing so would've given another perspective from a sheltered individual, especially one serving as a foil to Victoria, who clawed her way to the top instead of being born and raised in fame like Apricott. I also think her method of "I'll help you if you help me first" makes it hard to understand and sympathize her or even convince players to pick the premium option to accompany her. Chadley's okay, though I think he can be a better friend by standing up to Tommy and Apricott.
What could've been done to make it more interesting
Make the protagonist a veteran actor trying to disprove the tabloid rumors about being washed-up a la Victoria, or even make her the protagonist: I know the latter's controversial because not everyone likes Victoria, and doing so means altering her character in some ways, but I find the idea of a veteran defying the odds a more interesting story than that of a newbie rising to the top. To be honest, I prefer playing as a character who starts out having flaws in behavior and skills and doing their best to overcome them.
Work with the HWU crew since Book 1: I admit that working with the HWU characters in the last third of Book 2 was fun because of how helpful they've been, especially Holly Chang. Then it struck me: Why wasn't this in Book 1, where Jessica could've been at least content to get a supporting or minor role and sticking with it? Having her work with the HWU characters alongside the love interests would've been a better way to use them, like with the HSS old guard. That would've at least pleased HWU players who expect to see more of them. I think their lack of real involvement in Book 1 is one factor in the series' failure, which contributed to demands for more of their appearance in Book 2. Unfortunately, their growing prominence derailed the #MeToo-inspired plot by sidelining it. Since I prefer having the protagonist being a veteran instead of a newbie, have her work with them as a last resort to prove the tabloids wrong while addressing important issues of her time.
Get rid of Markus von Groot: The previous point brings me to the conclusion that Markus is ultimately unnecessary, in addition to being loathsome. I've already mentioned the reasons why I hate him, though I started disliking him when I first played the last third of Book 2. Ironic because he doesn't appear on that part.
Do not make Thomas Hunt a love interest: No offense to those who are romancing Hunt, but his setup as a love interest raises too many red flags on creepy older men taking advantage of younger women. A mysterious note in your room telling you to meet that person in a dark, secluded area? What could possibly go wrong with that? Another factor is that Jessica didn't know him on a personal level during the bridge meeting. Look, I get that he's not a bad guy like Viktor, and he's a capable director, but Jessica was still suffering from the attack, and Hunt hates Viktor as well, so the latter should've known better than to meet Jessica in a secluded place. Not to mention that as a HWU character, Hunt has no business hogging the spotlight, let alone as a love interest.
Stick to one tone: After reading this post, I couldn't agree more on the weak points of RCD. The weak execution of the harassment issue and the shift in tone despite its original presentation as a light-hearted take on Hollywood is proof that Pixelberry is desperate to keep making it lucrative no matter the long-term results and costs.
My thoughts on Book 3
Honestly, I was furious at the announcement that there will be a third book and Pixelberry continuing such a horrible series just because it was "popular" with the "silent majority". If this book eventually gets released, I'll just play it as a diamond mine and for Victoria Fontaine and the ocelot. If I'm feeling optimistic about it, which I'm not, all the love interests have equal face time, I get to see more of Holly Chang, and Markus von Groot never appears. Unfortunately, the more I think about RCD, the angrier I feel, bringing me to the conclusion that it's a lost cause and irrefutable evidence of Pixelberry's mismanagement of time, resources, and effort. If it weren't for the few characters I like in this series, I would've shunned Book 3.

Forever Yours, Iris West
For those of you faithfully following Heart In A Cage, I have not forgotten that story and will have an update soon.
Chapter 3: The First Day Of School
On the first day of senior year, I put on my new green sweater and tweed mini skirt, and I braid my long black hair to the side so it hangs over my shoulder, This is my last first day of school before college, so I need to make it a good one, whether Scott keeps ghosting me or not. I can understand Scott avoiding Linda the last three weeks of summer, but me? I wasn’t the one who broke up with him, yet he hasn’t answered my texts with anything more than vague, one word responses. And of course it’s at the back of my mind that we’re co editors of the student newspaper together, but I’ve never had a problem separating the personal from the professional when it comes to Scott.
When we’re in the newsroom together our number one focus is always getting the next big scoop. This will be fine, I may not have Linda, I may not even have Scott, but at least I can’t call myself friendless. Me and Cynthia have three classes together this year. Cynthia is Felicity’s cousin through marriage, although I’m not sure who in their families is married to whom. She said she’d meet me out front so we could walk in together, just in case Felicity tries to corner me again.
She’s been doing that ever since she started going out with Barry Allen, and I still don’t really get why. I haven’t had those feelings for Barry in years. I’m not even sure why I ever did in the first place except for maybe the fact that he has pretty eyes, and is smarter than most guys at school. But he’s still goofy, and never really says the right thing and is completely oblivious to the fact that Felicity and I aren’t friends until I have to remind him for the 300th time.
Me and Wally pile into the car so I can drive him to his school before I drive myself to mine. It’s Linda’s car, she asked me to take care of it while she’s gone because that’s just the kind of damn good friend she is. I’m reminded of just how much I’m going to miss her yet again as I turn the key in the ignition and hear it roar to life.
“So, do you think Linda’s going to visit for Christmas?” Wally asks faux-casually as we pull out of the driveway and start down the street, the stereo playing some punk band he loves.
“Oh my God,” I roll my eyes and smile at him. “You aren’t even subtle Wally, you know she’s too old for you right?”
“She’s only six years older, Priyanka Chopra is ten years older than Nick Jonas.”
“Since when are you so into celeb couples?” I ask, and he stays quiet. “Please don’t tell me you Googled that so you could find out if you and Linda have a chance.”
“No,” he says unconvincingly, and I shake my head as he turns up the music.
We pull up to the front of his school, and there is a girl with sandy brown hair and blue eyes standing facing the street while a horde of overexcited tweens rush around behind her. She waves as I pull up and Wally waves back.
“Who’s that,” I ask, trying not to tease. I’ve gotten enough sisterly teasing out of my system for the morning, although I’m still curious.
“Oh, that’s Jesse,” he says. “She’s just a friend,” he adds quickly as if he’s reading my mind.
“Have a good first day all right sis, try to meet some people.”
“I have to say I’m feeling a little dragged over here, shouldn’t I be telling you that?”
He smiles and gives me a little goodbye wave. He’s such a twerp, but I wave back.
“I love you,” I say.
“love you, too,” He says before walking off with Jesse. And I’ve always liked that about Wally, no matter how much of a brat he can be sometimes, he’s never embarrassed to say it back.
I get to school half an hour early. Although I start to wish I would have stopped for coffee first when I realize how packed the front lawn is with students, hugging each other hello after their summers apart, telling vacation stories back and forth, flipping through Instagram photos.
Was it always like this before Linda left?
I start making my way through to the double doors in front. I don’t keep my head down, it isn’t my style, but I hope no one tries to accost me for a summer break recap that I couldn’t possibly make interesting for them. I spent most of it either hanging out with my baby brother or another couple. Deep down I know how sad that is, that Wally’s right and I need to meet people. And I used to love having lots of friends, places to go on Saturdays, but then…
I don’t know, being little miss social butterfly again feels besides the point. Popularity just isn’t as important as anyone thinks it is. It can’t make you happy when you’re already so sad.
Speak of the Devil, I stop short when I see her there, in front of the double doors like she was planning this. She looks great as usual, her perfectly tousled blonde hair down from its signature ponytail, her horn rimmed glasses sitting on her nose like they’re meant to make her look more approachable, but are doing about as good a job as they did on Rachel Leigh Cook in She’s All That. Jesus Christ I should have went through the back.
I turn on one heel and try to redirect before she sees me.
“Iris, hey!” she says, and I squeeze my eyes shut and curse under my breath at her fake-cheery voice. She saw me.
I turn back around and fake a smile, feeling a bit like a hypocrite.“Felicity,” I walk up to her like I have weights in my shoes. “How was your summer?”
“Awesome,” She says, nearly exploding like she’s been holding her breath until she could tell me. “Coding camp in Tokyo was wonderful. You so should have come. I mean I know coding’s not really your thing.”
“It’s not not my thing, just kind of focused on journalism right now.”
“That’s great, and it’s so cool that you’re into old fashioned things but do you really think a newspaper reporter is a solid career path?”
“Gee, I don’t know Felicity, maybe I’ll call you from my cardboard box in ten years and let you know,”
I start for the entry bar, but I’m told to stop by the only voice I want to hear as little as Felicity’s”
“Iris, Felicity, what’s up?” Barry says cheerfully. He always says my name first when I’m standing next to Felicity and I don’t get why. He’s so weird in every possible way and I wish Cynthia would come rescue me. already.
Barry slinks his arm around Felicity and gives me a friendly nod. “How was your summer?”
The dreaded question, I reply with a simple, noncommittal, “cool”My hand is still on the entry bar of the door.
“Just cool, no details?” Barry says.
“Nope, not a one.”
“There probably just aren’t a lot of summer internship programs or camps for journalism anymore,” Felicity says in such a way that Barry can’t detect how bitchy she’s being. Not like he’d defend me anyway, and honestly, why should he? I’m not his girl.
“That’s ridiculous,” Barry says, like he means it. “I mean, I read your articles all the time there’s no way there’s not something out there for you.”
Why does he always insist on complimenting me in front of her? He must know that it pisses her off, unless he really is that dense. I guess book smarts and emotional intelligence are two entirely different things. But I see the way her face changes, how her eyes narrow a bit. She reaches up to play with the collar of his button-down.
“By the way Iris, I’m really sorry you didn’t get an invite to my laser tag party. If I had known you wanted to go I’m sure I could moved some things around and squeezed you in,” Felicity says.
Goddamnit Barry, I think to myself, of course he told her about our asinine conversation the other day. And right now I’m finding it hard to pick who I want to strangle more.
“I never said I wanted to go, I was busy that day anyway.”
“That’s what I told her,” he says, looking a bit embarrassed. “That’s what I told you,” he quickly repeats over to her.
Felicity shrugs, “Heh, must have misheard. In any case it was a blast.”
I finally push the entry bar, ready to make my escape, when finally, by some annoyingly belated miracle, Cynthia shows up.
“What up uglies?” she says, nodding at them as she hangs an arm around me.
“Hey cuz,” She says to Felicity. “Good to see you’re feeling better after that bug you caught in Tokyo.”
“Bug?” I say, finally curious about the summer vacation Felicity’s been desperate to lord over me.
“Yeah, didn’t your mom tell my mom that you were basically catatonic with plane flu the entire first week and you had to be separated from the other kids and you never got to finish your app or something?” Cynthia continues.
“No, that- none of that happened, I mean it didn’t happen like that,” Felicity babbles anxiously. It must have happened exactly like that, and I feel suddenly redeemed. Thank you Queen Cynthia.
“Hmm,” Cynthia shrugs, “Must have misheard, anywho, catch ya later.”
She hooks arms with me and we finally slam through the door.
“Not a moment too soon,” I say.
“Ignore her, she’s just pissy because you look amazing. I bet she was hoping you’d show up to the first day with a massive zit or a bad haircut or the herps or something.”
“You have a very odd way of lifting my spirits Cynthia.”
“I do my best.”
I nudge her playfully, feeling better. Maybe I don’t have loads of friends, but it’s nice to have one awesome one, even if I had to survive my ill-fated friendship with Felicity to get it.
The day goes by glacially. It’s still at the back of my mind that it’s the first day of school, but it feels just like any other day, like the work is too easy and the folks in the halls are too gossipy and everything sucks and I want to go home. By the time last period rolls around, I’m relieved, not only because it’s nearing the end of the day, but because my last period is journalism. The student newspaper is my ultimate safe space, even with things being uncomfortable with Scott.
As always he’s the first one in class, already jotting down something in a notepad. I sit at the same table to show that we’re still cool, but still two chairs away to give him his space.I take out my notebook too, even though I can’t think of any notes to write down when we haven’t even been assigned our beats for the semester.
I look over at him, and realize he’s looking at me too.“Hey there,” I say with an uncertain voice.
“Hey yourself.” he says back. It’s quiet and nearly awkward as we both think of what to say next. He wore that checkered shirt today, with the sleeves rolled up, and I really hope one day I can look at him without picturing him laying me down on this table. I’d never go there, I’d never do that to Linda, but I can’t always help where my imagination wanders, even when I’m mad at him.
“Look,” he says before I can slip too far into my mind. “I’m sorry I’ve been distant, it’s just, the whole Linda thing and—
“Its okay, really,” I say, and I realize that it is. Maybe it’s just the thrill of being in journalism again, the smell of pulp and toner cartridges and red pens. But I’m finding it hard to stay mad at Scott, even as he still looks like he’s not sure what’s next
“Really?”
“Yeah, it’s fine.”
Before I can say anything else, the rest of the students and Mr. Bridge start to pour in. I give Scott one last smile before turning my attention to the front of the room. I can tell there’s still tension in the air, and maybe Scott can too, because next thing he leans over to whisper.
“I missed you,” he says, and I whisper that I missed him too.
The first day of student newspaper is always a little bit uneventful. Nothing has happened yet so there aren’t any scoops to tackle. Mostly we just get reaquainted with each other and get to know the newbies, pitch potential story ideas, and anxiously await our beat assignments.
Scott’s beat this year is the art and drama departments, not his first choice, but one he’ll happily sink his teeth into. My beat is the math and science departments, because of course it is. Mr. Bridge says that I’m too good a writer to not ever leave my comfort zone, and that important things were happening in those departments this year. But all I can imagine is having to cover Felicity’s stupid IT club.
And I realize I’m thinking about her again when I really don’t want to be. Why does she have to be such a bitch to me all of the time? She wasn’t always. She was a good friend once, and I know that good friend is still in there somewhere.
I head out to Linda’s loaner car, thinking that aside from gently starting to get things back to normal with Scott, this is already looking to be the quite the sub standard school year. And when I hear that too familiar voice again behind me, that feeling is instantly multiplied.
“Iris, hey Iris,” Barry calls, and I turn to face him but grab for my keys at the same time.
“I really don’t have a lot of time Barry, I have to pick up my brother.”
“I promise I’ll be quick.” He stops in front of me and I decide to hear him out. But he just stands there, looking at me.
“Well, what?” I say, breaking the pause.
“I just wanted to apologize for this morning. I guess I didn’t realize it in the moment but Felicity was being sort of not cool back there, and I just, I’m sorry. I’ll talk to her, I promise.”
“Please don’t” I say, knitting my brow in frustration. “You talking to your girlfriend about me is exactly the problem.”
“I wasn’t talking about you. You just came up and then the party came up. I didn’t know it was going to be a whole thing.”
“It’s not a whole thing. But is it really so much to ask that you two leave me alone? I mean, Felicity obviously has some issue with me, and maybe it’s not exactly one-sided but I think it would be easier for everyone if you’d just, you know, lay off.”
He sighs, and rubs his forehead before looking at me again. “That’s fair,” he says. “And I really am sorry, again. It’s just—
“What? It’s just what?”
“Nothing, nevermind. Okay, we’ll lay off. Promise.”
“Good.”
“Okay.”
There’s another long pause before I walk around to the driver’s side of my car and duck in. By the time I drive off he’s still standing there, like the conversation isn’t over.

Till Death: Chapter 3
Co-authored by @holyfuckabear
Summary: A canon rewrite fic. Seventeen-year-old Ichigo Kurosaki has become a superhero overnight. This entails a lot more oversight than he was lead to believe there would be. Is this his life now? Being stalked by some tiny woman, hell-bent on bossing him around? (For the record: yes.)
He was five years old when his mother moved the family to Karakura, so he has very few memories of the time before.
His life changed swiftly. His new preschool was, in a word, monochromatic. There were at least a couple other mixed kids at the other one, but he was the only one here. His mom was happier, that was good. Yuzu wasn’t sick as often, Mom said that being out of the city smog helped. One day he suddenly had a father.
Or maybe that’s just the blur of young memories.
.
.
It’s been a really long week. He hasn’t been sleeping much, what with his new Soul Reaper duties. Weirdly, Mizuiro’s been getting on his nerves, but he has no idea why. And he’s not really getting this section in Maths, so he’s going to have to do some extra legwork to figure it out. Plus Tatsuki’s been going through something so it’s not like he can ask her, like he usually would.
Also, he lives with a raging maniac.
Well… another raging maniac, but this one lives in his closet, not down the hall, so it’s twice as annoying and he gets zero respite.
It’s only Wednesday and he feels like he’s counting down the seconds until the weekend. All he wants is some quiet time to himself. He wants to sleep, finish his homework and maybe read something for fun instead of class for a change.
Ichigo’s already reached his threshold for social interactions and he has two days to go.
He’s not going to survive this week.
.
.
One moment she’s sweetly feigning interest in Keigo’s prattle, the next she’s shouting for Ichigo to pull himself together after having his arm nearly ripped from its socket.
Such is the duality of Rukia.
The former freaks him out more than the latter.
Ichigo gets used to her. Rukia’s around all the time, she is inconveniently, loudly present. She doesn’t have to say anything. Her existence is loud. He was studying on his bed instead of his desk the other day. She appropriated his desk chair, wheeled it close to the bed and used his spine as a footrest as she blew through his collection of manga. When he complained, she actually shushed him. “I’m at a really good part and you’re distracting!”
“...!”
He’s used to the real her; the pushy, stubborn drill sergeant. He acts on her say-so. It’s the sparkly, girly princess that freaks him out. He has no idea what to do with that. Every day it’s like stepping into the twilight zone and how has nobody noticed how fake it all sounds? He’s the only guy who’s made it out of Plato’s cave. He wants to physically shake his classmates and shout “Don’t you realize it’s all just bullshit shadows on the wall?!”
He doesn’t, but he really feels like it.
This is what his life has come to.
Normalcy is running around the city in the dead of night, searching for monsters to slay. Normalcy has become acting on orders delivered by text-message and bunny-shaped shadows.
.
.
Normally Rukia wouldn’t fraternize with the humans, but Orihime makes it very hard to keep her distance. She invites her into the inner sanctum of high school girl-dom, a complex set of social systems that Rukia has zero experience with. It’s surprisingly lovely.
She can be completely genuine with exactly none of them, but it’s still nice.
They eat lunches on the roof, tangential to the boys. They stand at each other’s desks between classes. They escort each other on routine errands, simply for the pleasure of each other’s company.
????
It’s baffling, but fascinating (she’ll never admit it, but it makes her feel warm inside). And mimicking the girls does wonders for the authenticity of her acting.
Orihime looks at her askance every once in awhile, but she seems to understand the principle. She never addresses it in private anyway.
The boys and girls occasionally drift together. This is in part due to Tatsuki and Ichigo’s friendship and in part due to the conventional social mores of the human world that dictate that genders must interact, but never fully integrate.
She likes Chad, he’s sweet and quiet, clearly very intelligent and has a sparse way with words that she finds refreshing. Keigo is a massive idiot, but there are worse things to be. Mizuiro seems very sweet, but he’s always asking her to help him with schoolwork and tends to sit very close as she badly explains grammar structure.
Ichigo is Ichigo.
“Rukia, I made cookies for everyone!” Orihime jolts her from her contemplations to remind her that there are worse casts of characters to be among.
Then she takes a bite and valiantly tries not to spit out the edamame chip cookie.
.
.
Chad’s a very large young man. He’s also Mexican. He tends to stand out in crowds, particularly in a population like Japan. He’s quiet, so people tend to forget he’s even around. They’ll say things in front of him, thinking he’s not listening. Or worse, they think he’s too stupid to understand what they’re saying.
He speaks three languages, but whatever.
So when Ichigo and Rukia run off together for the third time in a week and the guys immediately turn to gossiping hens, he figures no one’s expecting a response from him. He sighs. People should really learn to mind their own business… then again he’s a hypocrite, he’s just not asking his questions out loud.
Whatever.
Maybe his mind’s just under occupied these days, but he’s been contemplating the mysterious case of the delinquent and the new girl. Specifically, with respect to the ghost problem that Ichigo’s been dealing with for as long as he’s known him. It’s not that he’s seen them do anything suspicious, but the Kurosaki clinic was destroyed and the next day Rukia Kuchiki shows up at school? A prissy, perky, pretty girl appears and suddenly Ichigo’s asking her how high he should jump? Chad sees her for what she is, because they’re the same. She’s quiet because she is always listening, her attention is eerily laser focused.
After school he goes to his part-time job at the library. Today is Wednesday so it’s Reading Circle for the daycare kids whose parents work late. Chad has been slowly making his way through Howl’s Moving Castle, chapter by chapter. It’s taking him twice as long because he reads the chapters in Japanese, then English, but he thinks it’s worth it. He likes Sophie, she’s very sensible. That is a girl for whom words have weight and meaning.
After that he meets up with some of the guys he’s played a couple gigs with.
“Give him to Chad,” says one, of a supposedly cursed Cockatiel.
Chad sighs, “what’s your name?” he is awfully cute.
“Yuichi Shibata, what’s your name mister?” And then a metal beam falls on his head.
He’s nothing if not polite though, so he introduces himself.
“Pleased to meet you, I’m Sado Yasutora.”
.
.
Rukia is always flexing. She’s always testing her limbs and joints, stretching and pulling at them, trying to find their limits. She feels too big for her skin, too strong for her fragile bird bones. This body is not real but it’s her reality.
The human boy took her powers. She’d only meant to give him a little, just enough to end the fight. Turns out, she miscalculated. And now she’s living on dwindled reserves and the foreseeable future looks like a long, winding wait for her powers to return.
But they will return. Little by little.
At first, she could feel herself getting stronger by the day. She has recovered enough that she can do the most basic kidou: mild restraints and minimal healing. It’ll probably be months until she’s recovered! Months in the human world, with a boy left to do her work.
So she flexes, she tests the limits of her strength and gains micrometers where she can.
In the meantime, at least she’s learning leadership skills.
.
.
There’s an adjustment period. They aren’t quite working like a well oiled machine yet. That’s the thing with new partnerships, they have to learn their roles. They’re treading new ground together and some growing pains are to be expected. And then there are some details that turn into unexpected issues.
.
.
The can rattles as she shakes it in her hand, the sound makes her heart race. Tatsuki bites her lip, planning her first stroke. The side of the bare building is a blank canvas, her canvas. She wears gloves while she does it. Intent on keeping the evidence off her fingers. A bright splash of orange against white stucco.
Her mother thought painting classes would be a good enough creative outlet. Don’t get her wrong, it did give her the skills to pull this off.
A big, orange asterisk. The start of a dandelion. She shakes her can of yellow, setting the orange down. It tips onto its side and rolls deeper into the alley.
“Shit.” Tatsuki mutters, following the can.
It stops against the sole of a shoe. Tatsuki’s eyes trail up from the shoe to some legs, then a torso. Her mouth goes dry and she chokes when she sees the face.
Ichigo, slumped against a dumpster. His eyes are open and glassy. She doesn’t see his chest moving.
She stands there for who knows how long before her brain gets her body to react. She presses her thumb to his pulse, but all she can feel is her own heart hammering against her thumb.
“Ichigo.” She quavers, grabbing him by the arms and shaking him. He’s warm, but not very.
“Ichigo!” Tatsuki slaps him across the face. His head flops, limp.
She covers her mouth with her hand, swallowing the whimper that lets loose her tears.
He’s dead. Oh god, he’s dead just like Masaki.
She was supposed to protect him.
Her hands shake as she reaches for her cellphone. There’s a splash of orange paint on her glove and she stares at it for longer than she should.
She dials, but before it can ring, she hears approaching footsteps.
“Come on and get in there then.” The voice sounds familiar but Tatsuki’s ears are still ringing.
“Hello, what is your emergency?”
Tatsuki opens her mouth to speak when she hears Ichigo groan.
“Ugh, why does my face sting?”
“Ichigo!” She scrambles to check his eyes and throat.
“Get off me, wouldja.” He pushes her off.
“You were collapsed! I thought you were dead!”
“Ma’am, are you still on the line?”
“Thanks, we’re good. Bye.” Tatsuki hangs up. Her gaze skips between Ichigo, who is sitting slumped against the alley wall, and Rukia, who is standing off to his right. “Rukia, when did you get here?”
Rukia swallows, “Oh, I was just passing by!”
If Tatsuki had less adrenaline coursing through her system she might have questioned the validity of Rukia walking around alone at night and just happening to stumble upon them.
“I heard you yelling and I came running!”
“See, that’s a good samaritan,” Ichigo means for this to sound sincere but it comes off sarcastic. Which is actually how he means it.
“Why don’t I help you bring him home to the clinic,” Rukia suggests, an ounce too chipper.
Tatsuki nods numbly and each of them grab one of his arms to sling over their shoulders. They make a comical trio, lumbering along the Karakura streets. Ichigo is utterly fine and has never felt more emasculated.
He tries to protest, but Rukia shuts him down. “Oh dear, you shouldn’t strain yourself Kurosaki! I’m not very strong, but Tatsuki is. We’ll help you get home safe!”
When he gets home and his father starts gushing over his non-existent injuries, Ichigo honestly contemplates quitting. Being a superhero isn’t worth this.
.
.
From there, things go from annoying to maddening.
Everyone seems to have something to say about the ‘hot new transfer student’ and the ginger thug who always seems to be hanging around her.
Keigo is very proud.
Mizuiro is overly solicitous with his promises that he’s not flirting with her, that he’s into older women.
For Ichigo’s part, he’s sure that Rukia is way older than even Mizuiro’d prefer but would happily step aside in favor of their future bliss.
.
.
On Thursday Chad brings his new pet to school. None of his teachers bother him about it and at lunch, his friends clamor over the strange bird with the expansive vocabulary.
Everyone, that is, except for Ichigo and Rukia.
“Chad,” asks Ichigo, tentatively, “where’d you get the bird.”
“A guy…”
This seems like a perfectly reasonable response to Chad, but Keigo is unsatisfied. “Why are you always too lazy to tell the actual story?! Some guy?! What guy? Where? Does it have to do with the car that hit you yesterday? Come on!”
And so it goes.
Ichigo continues to stare at the bird through lunch.
“Do you need some help with that?” Mizuiro asks, startling Ichigo out of his revery. But he wasn’t addressing him.
“It’s this infernal juice box!” Rukia exclaims, sounding uncomfortably too like her demanding self.
Ichigo sighs and takes it from her, pokes a hole with the straw and never lets his eyes stray from the bird.
Mizuiro throws up his hands in mock defensiveness and shoots Ichigo a sly look before turning back to the one-sided conversation Keigo and Chad are still having.
“You’re right you know,” Rukia says around the straw. “There is something odd about that bird, but it’s not evil. It’s just lonely.”
Rukia knows how it feels. Lately she’s been feeling homesick for the 13th Division.
“We’ll take care of it tonight.”
“Awesome, I didn’t need to study anyway.”
“Is that sarcasm?”
“No ma’am,” he replies, sarcastically.
“Your friend… is he like you?”
“What do you mean? Mixed?”
“No, you idiot. Can he see spirits?”
“Not… that I know of.”
“Do you know him well?”
“Sure,” Ichigo scratches his nose and contemplates Chad, “Back in middle school I was already attracting a lot of… negative attention ‘cause of my hair. One day I ran into these guys who really meant business. They were gonna mess me up. Then Chad showed up. Ever since, we’ve watched each other’s backs.”
Rukia turns to look at the giant too.
“He never fights back, just stands there, puts himself between bad guys and whoever they’re trying to hurt. So-”
“So you fight for him,” Rukia finishes.
Ichigo glances at her out of the corner of his eye. “Yeah.”
“You’re a good friend, Ichigo.”
“Yeah, I come in handy.” He wouldn’t admit it, but her esteem feeds something inside him. It feels suspiciously like pride.
.
.
“What can I do?”
“Assume the fetal position and stay out of the way!”
And so it goes. Everyone in the Kurosaki household has a role to play. Ichigo gets the shit kicked out of him, Karin and Yuzu get first aid certified and help dad out in the clinic. One of these things may or may not be more useful than the other.
Chad comes into the clinic clutching Yuichi’s cage in a tight fist and slumping against Karin and Yuzu’s shorter statures.
There’s a bruise like a clawed footprint spanning Chad’s entire back, but Karin is staring at the bird.
.
.
Friday morning, Karin’s not at the breakfast table. Yuzu says she’s sick, but Karin’s never been ill a day in her life. There’s a sick feeling that makes him short on breath and nauseated. Worry and suspicion cloud his thoughts.
He knocks on her bedroom door and enters.
Karin is curled up on her side, sweating and clutching the blankets.
“Karin?”
“ICHIGO!” Isshin shouts from downstairs. “Chad is missing!”
Torn, Ichigo glances from Karin to the door and back again.
“Go,” she grits. “Go.”
He does.
He sprints out of the house and soon finds Rukia at his side.
“Any idea where he would go?”
“Not yet.”
“Ichigo.”
“Yeah?”
“Listen to your heart.”
“What?!”
“Like we practiced, feel for the bird’s soul.”
“...Right.”
He tries, he really does. He’s not so good with the sensing yet. He knows something’s wrong when he grasps at a thread, only to find himself running in circles. And then, across the way he spots Karin, slumped against the fence, struggling to remain upright. “Karin, what are you-?”
“Ichigo, I need- I need to tell you something.”
“Karin, you should go back to bed.”
He’s so afraid for her. Something is very very wrong. But one crisis at a time please.
And Rukia’s looking at his sister in that contemplative way that frightens him, like she’s a specimen for study, a code she can crack. He cannot let her dig too deep here, or else-
“Ichigo, take her back now,” Rukia commands. “I’ll go on and find Chad myself.”
“Are you kidding me? You’re in no condition to fight a hollow on your own. I can’t just leave you!”
Rukia purses her lips and says very seriously, “Worry about your sister for now, I can handle everything until you get there. Go, go on, the faster you get her home, the faster you can come help.” She’s about to take off before he stops her.
“Wait. Don’t risk yourself for my sake.”
She smiles at him, “A veteran soul reaper never takes unnecessary chances.”
This would be more reassuring if she hadn’t nearly died saving his life on the day they met.
.
.
Karin is living someone else’s nightmare. She keeps seeing things in flashes. Blood, murder, screams of terror. A red stain soaking the brightness of the morning and dripping in streaks like sunlight. There’s a little boy, a lot like her, trapped in the body of a bird. He doesn’t want to be free either.
He just wants his mom.
“You have to tell him,” she rasps, clutching her brother’s shirt. “Tell him that if he crosses over he can be with her again. His mom. Don’t let him be alone anymore.”
Loneliness so crushing, it stretches out into infinity and throws dust covers over every possibility.
.
.
Whatever senses Rukia has are dulled either by the gigai or her weakened state, so parsing out the soul ribbon belonging to Yuichi is difficult, but eventually she finds the thread.
She ends up on an empty side street when she feels a cold lick of fear slide up the back of her neck. A hollow.
“Mmm, I ordered chicken and I get a steak as well. How fortunate for me. Hello little Shinigami.”
Rukia leaps out of the way just in time to avoid the hands that strike out to trap her.
Well, now or never.
She dodges again and lands on top of it. Mustering every ounce of power she has, she fires a kidou cannon at it’s hunched back.
It works!
Giddy and triumphant she whoops. And ducks out of the way again. He misses her by a hair. She fires another cannon.
Suddenly, the surges of blue light emanating from her palms are joined by fists. And the roars and blasting noises joined by a chorus of cries.
Chad punches the hollow square in the mask and Yuichi screams for him to run away. Can he see it? She wonders, before he breaks out a combo aimed at thin air. That’s a no... He shouldn’t be fighting anyway.
The hollow sets it’s sights on Chad. Rukia acts fast, running at him full tilt and body-checking the young man out of the way of the oncoming attack.
“Thanks,” Chad grunts.
The hollow flails in pain. She took out huge chunks of its hide with her spells, but it soon regains its faculties.
It laughs, “Try as much as you want, you can’t save the boy. He makes pretty good bait, don’t you think?”
Rukia assesses the situation. She’s weaker than she’s ever been, her only allies are a bird in a cage and a blind human who does not want to fight. She doesn’t know his reasons but she can understand that. She just needs to get behind it again, it’ll be vulnerable from the back. She also needs to get some high ground so its mask will be in her sights.
“Chad!” she calls, “Give me a boost!” She doesn’t give him a chance to process or respond before getting a running start at him. Fortunately, he’s a smart young man. She plants her feet in his cupped hands, “2 o’clock!” and vaults into the air.
Rukia sails above the hollow’s head in an arc. She twists in mid-air and at the precise angle where she can see the base of it’s skull she fires the strongest cannon she can muster.
.
.
Ichigo’s arms curl under Karin’s knees and shoulders, he presses her nose into his collarbone so hard she thinks it’ll bend. She sweats and swears. Over his shoulder, like a pin of light in the encroaching darkness, she sees a woman in white. She presses a pale finger to her lips and fixes her in a steely gaze.
There is a ghost that Ichigo cannot see, lurking behind him.
Karin is no longer afraid.
She’s terrified.
.
.
The hollow twists at the last second but it’s a critical hit. It staggers forward and drops to its knees, giving Rukia and Chad time to regroup.
Rukia’s breath is ragged from exertion. She doesn’t have the energy reserves necessary to end this fight, but she can stall long enough for Ichigo to arrive.
They make a good team, Chad and Rukia, it takes very little verbal communication to effectively coordinate their attacks. He tosses, she twists, they deal blow after blow. She wonders if it will be enough.
The trapped spirit cries in his cage. He pleads with the hollow, even as they have him on the ropes. His fear has solidified into an unyielding thing. It grips at him, drags him down, prevents him from making a single move.
All the while the hollow takes advantage. This one likes to talk. He brags about the night they all died. He croons that Yuichi’s mother looked so beautiful with scarlet in her hair. He tells them that in her final moments she did not beg for her son, but for him to stop. He’d known many women like her, but nothing tastes as good as your last meal.
Chad’s stomach roils at the implications. He burns to shut him up.
So Chad throws all of himself into one final punch. The white mask cracks.
.
.
Karin does not know why it’s this spirit with whom she feels this strong a kinship. She doesn’t know why the last vestiges of her denial are being ripped away from her and shredded before her eyes.
What she knows is this:
Her life is wrong.
How did she get here?
.
.
Ichigo considers his begging sister.
They’re almost home.
He turns around.
.
.
The hollow shatters into pieces, flying apart and dissolving into nothing.
Chad has become fixated on his fist. He can’t look away. He is both intoxicated and frightened of his own strength. He just slayed a dragon. He just conquered an army. He summited a mountain. He has done the impossible with just this hand. Once, he swore to his Abuelo that he would never raise it.
He wonders if Abuelo would consider this his own defense.
Never raise a hand until you have extended it.
But a monster cannot reach back.
He’s made the right decision, but it does not feel like a victory.
“Are you alright?” he asks both Yuichi and Rukia. The latter stares at him in shock, then calculation.
‘I’m sorry,’ she says with her eyes. He nods.
Moments later, Ichigo arrives on the scene with Karin still in his arms. He sets her on her feet and looks around, searching for impending danger.
“It’s over,” Karin assures him breathily.
He looks to Rukia for confirmation, she nods too.
Karin approaches Yuichi and Ichigo follows close behind, at the ready in case of a fall. She kneels in front of the bird and Ichigo falls over himself trying to keep her upright.
“I’m fine,” improbably, Karin laughs and pushes his hands away. “Hi,” she greets the bird, more politely and patiently than she’s ever greeted a living human.
“Hello,” perhaps Yuichi senses their kinship too.
“My brother is going to take care of you now, okay?”
“Can I… Can I stay with Chad? He’s nice.”
Karin agrees, “if you want to stay, you can.” Rukia opens her mouth to argue, but at Ichigo’s quelling look, she silences herself. “I understand, I’d want to stay too. But if you move on, you can see your mom again. And there’s a whole other world waiting for you. You won’t have to be a bird anymore.”
“I don’t mind being a bird…”
“I know you’re scared,” Chad joins Karin on the curb. They make a strange picture: a giant and a tiny tomboy kneeling and conversing with a cockatiel on the side of the road, flanked by two schoolkids with grim expressions. “But everything will be okay.”
“And I’ll get to see her again?”
“Yeah,” Karin smiles and thinks of Masaki. “I’m sure she’s been waiting for you all this time.”
“Okay,” Yuichi agrees, “I’m ready then.”
Rukia pulls on her glove. Ichigo braces himself for a blow that doesn’t come. Instead, she places her hand above his heart and gives him a gentle push.
Ichigo falls out of his body gracefully. Chad catches him before he falls.
“Yo.”
“Hi.”
“...Hey.” Karin says breathlessly, looking not at his body, but at his soul. For the very first time.
Ichigo has five konsos under his belt, but each time is just as brilliant as the last. He gently presses the hilt of his sword to Yuuichi’s forehead (or whatever a bird has?). Aquamarine light guilds the cage and the next moment Yuuichi is gone. The bird is just a bird.
.
.
It’s Friday night and Ichigo just wants to sleep.
But he’s got homework.
He’s mentally exhausted, he’s hit his threshold, he just wants to be alone. Monday looms out in front of him like a spectre. It’s so far away but he knows he’ll blink and the reset button will be hit.
He taps his pencil against his notebook as he fixates on the next problem. Three more and then he can get back to the half-read novel lying cover-side down on the corner of his desk.
Rukia is sitting on his bed, reading Volume 2 of Super Kaiju Maids (“Maids who transform into giant monsters to fight EVIL!”), her back against the wall, feet peeking over the edge. Her head tilts sideways and eyes widen at a particularly suspenseful part. She squeaks and gasps with the twists of the plot.
Ichigo sighs, he’ll finish tomorrow.
He grabs his novel and rolls his desk chair closer to the bed. He leans back and puts his feet up, his left ankle, brushing Rukia’s thigh.
They read side by side well into the night.

I’ve done this before but I’ve tweaked some things and reformatted it so if you’re interested in learning an unreasonable amount about my Inquisitor, then read on. (source)
PART ONE: Basic Personality/Life Before the Conclave
Appearance/Personality/Basic Facts
Name: Laurina Lavellan
Age: 29 at the time of the Conclave
Race: Dalish elf
Gender/preferred pronouns: Female, she/her
Class (warrior/rogue/mage): Mage
Preferred weapon/spell type: Fire and storm
Specialization: Rift mage
Romance: Solas
Give a detailed description of your Inquisitor.
Laurina is five feet tall, blonde, with light brown skin and amber eyes. She has a side cut plus braid. She has a scar across her left cheek from a hunting accident when she was a teenager (she and her friends accidentally stumbled across a bear and pissed it off). She has the full Mythal vallaslin in green, chosen due to Laurina’s own strict moral code and her dedication to justice.
OPINIONS. Give your Inquisitor’s stance on:
The Chantry: Can’t stand it. She thinks they’re all full of themselves, and they use their god as an excuse for their racism and mistreatment of others. Don’t let her get started on her feelings about exalted marches. She believes that the Chantry is corrupted and egotistical; too much so to ever recover, regardless of what the other members of the Inquisition have to say about it.
Tevinter: Its single redeeming quality is that it is now where Dorian lives. If it wasn’t so important to him, she’d view it the same way she views the Chantry – just let it burn. As it is, she doesn’t really believe that Dorian can change things, but he hopes, for his sake, that he can.
Fereldan: Laurina appreciates that Fereldans are so much more straightforward than Orlesians. Even if they have something negative to say, they say it, rather than hiding it in a compliment. She likes King Alistair well enough, from the few interactions they’ve had, and she’s gotten, overall, fewer nasty elf related insults in Fereldan than she has in Orlais. Besides, Laurina’s a dog person, so Fereldan can’t be all that bad.
Orlais: Beautiful country, shitty people. Laurina hates the Game, even though she’s decent at playing, when she tries. She feels like she hears things like ‘knife-ear’ and ‘rabbit’ from Orlesians more than from anyone else, and they’re less likely to acknowledge that those are insults. The nasty ‘elven savage’ comments at Halamshiral turned her against the country even more. She doesn’t like their food, their decorating style, and she especially doesn’t like how prevalent the Chantry is there.
Mages/Magic: She thinks the Circle is stupid and hypocritical. Magic is as useful as any other skill, and if anyone abuses it, it’s the fault of the abuser, not of magic itself. She also has a deep academic interest in learning how magic works.
Templars: She’s had very few interactions with them, but none of those have been good. She can admit that their abilities are useful tools, however. If they weren’t so tied to the Chantry, she would have a lot more respect for them. As it stands, a few Templars can be useful soldiers with a unique skillset. More than that and they become a threat, and all too often fall victim to their own sense of self-righteousness.
The Mage/Templar War: Something had to give. She supports the war in theory, but not in practice, as it doesn’t actually seem to be accomplishing anything other than a massive pile of bodies. The people actually fighting don’t have any power to do anything, and Laurina doesn’t appreciate people who claim to have a cause just as an excuse to use violence.
The Dalish and City Elves: Laurina does have a little bit of a Dalish superiority complex, as she is naturally a somewhat arrogant person, but she doesn’t look down on city elves. One of her best friends was originally from an alienage, and Laurina has seen enough alienages to know that city elves have it rough enough without other elves turning against them.
Dwarves: Before joining the Inquisition, Laurina could count the number of dwarves she’s spoken to on her fingers, and all of them were surface dwarves; merchants. Laurina finds the dwarven practice of worshipping ancestors to be strange, but they’ve never tried to convert her or anything, so she doesn’t much care. She likes dwarves, as a general rule.
Qunari/Tal-Vashoth (do they even know the difference?): The first time Laurina saw a Qunari it was when she and two of her friends snuck into Kirkwall for that exact purpose. They scared the shit out of her and she insisted she was never going to risk pissing one of them off. She knew the difference between Qunari and Tal-Vashoth in theory, but until meeting Bull she didn’t really realize what a huge difference it was. She doesn’t like the Qun, and likes it less the more she hears about it. She doesn’t trust Qunari as far as she can throw them. She comes to have a lot of respect for Tal-Vashoth – turning your back on everything you know isn’t easy, especially when the people you’re turning on are so intense.
Humans: Laurina pretty much always starts off defensive with humans. Better safe than sorry, and for every nice human Laurina’s ever met she’s met two more who would be only too happy to run her through. With only a handful of exceptions, Laurina can never fully drop her guard around humans, even after she’s known them for a while.
What is their favorite place to travel to?
The Emerald Graves. It’s beautiful and full of history (and it’s relatively easy to avoid humans there).
Their least favorite?
The Western Approach. Everything is trying to eat her, the sand is hot and hurts her feet, it’s too bright, it goes on forever… She is not a fan.
Describe what your Inquisitor is like before the game’s events–preferably, choose three words that describe best. Then explain why those adjectives are appropriate descriptors.
Curious: Laurina liked to investigate things – strange noises, new areas, etc. She jumped between topics at the drop of a hat while learning.
Simplistic: Had a very black and white world view and an ‘us versus them’ mentality.
Quick-witted: One liners, sharp sense of humor, quick to respond to insults or jibes.
Does your Inquisitor change over the course of the game’s events? If so, how? What events affected their character arc the most?
Starting at the Conclave, Laurina changed entirely. Her two closest friends, who she felt personally responsible for, were killed in the explosion. All three of the above traits changed as time went on. She begins to struggle with depression. She becomes a more patient learner, and starts to look before she leaps. She learns to make nice with her enemies – like at Halamshiral – and to trust people she usually wouldn’t, like Cassandra and Bull. Constantly needing to hold her tongue dulls her sense of humor a bit, or at least makes it less noticeable, as does her more pessimistic world view. She is also very changed by the destruction of Haven; after that she accepts that she has to grow up and protect these people who have trusted her with their lives, even though she never wanted them to.
Use three words to describe your Inquisitor at the end of the game, and explain why they are appropriate. (If there are any that are still the same from the beginning of the game, explain why they are still appropriate DESPITE the game’s events.)
Weary: All her friends have gone back to their lives. Solas is gone (and is her new enemy). She’s lost her arm, along with the mark that made her so special. Already inclined towards depressive tendencies, Laurina is tired.
Intelligent: Over the years as Inquisitor, Laurina really learned how to listen, even to viewpoints she was opposed to, and she greatly benefitted from it.
Determined: Laurina has lost a lot of things. Her resolve to stop Solas without losing him too couldn’t possibly be stronger.
Life Before the Conclave
What is their combat skill level before the events of the game? Are they already skilled fighters, or can they barely hold their weapon of choice properly?
Laurina was gifted, but had mostly used her skills for hunting or warding off small groups of enemies. Learning to fight large groups of demons and organized enemies took some practice.
How well do they improve after becoming the Herald/Inquisitor?
Laurina became better at fighting with a team – her friends Lunalla and Trystan had fought with her for so long that none of them really had to think about it. Learning to adapt to a team that didn’t know her as well took a while. Her abilities against large groups improved, and she learned new tricks from various people who came through Skyhold, companions and otherwise.
Does the Inquisitor have family they left behind? Friends?
Her closest friends died at the Conclave. Laurina misses them immeasurably. Laurina considers Keeper Deshanna to be practically her mother, but despite being incredibly homesick for her and the rest of the clan, Laurina feels too ashamed of losing Lunalla and Trystan and becoming a Chantry icon to feel as though she’d be welcomed back home, or still belong there.
How do they feel about being separated from them?
She is homesick and lonely, and her independent, defensive nature keeps her from talking about it with most of her new friends. She lashes out frequently as a result.
What is the most important/influential moment of their life before the Conclave?
A hunting party was attacked – and most of them killed – by a group of Templars when Laurina was sixteen. Nothing drives home the idea that you can only trust your own people quite like something like that.
Why were they sent to the Conclave?
Laurina was bright, but hot-headed and prideful. The Keeper thought she was both qualified and would benefit from the experience.
PART TWO: Main Plot Reactions/Choices
The Wrath of Heaven/The Threat Remains
How does the Inquisitor react to the Anchor and the idea of closing the Breach–do they want to do the right thing, are they only along because they are a prisoner, or something else?
To the anchor – a resounding response of ‘what the fuck is that’. She is defensive, scared, and angry when she first wakes up, but knows that 1) a hole in the sky isn’t good for anyone, and 2) no one’s going to save her if she doesn’t save herself.
Do they take the mountain pass with the scouts to the Temple or do they charge with the soldiers?
Soldiers. The mountain pass puts her alone with people she doesn’t know, with herself as her main defender. She isn’t invested in this cause and she’s hurting – she’d rather the nameless soldiers risk their lives for now.
How does the Inquisitor react to being called the Herald of Andraste?
She protests being called the Herald of Andraste whenever she can. She hates it, and she hates that people are foisting it on her when it is so very not a part of her personal identity. (Your Worship is even worse).
Do they believe it themselves?
Definitely not.
How does the Inquisitor react to Chancellor Roderick’s presence and the threat of the Chantry?
Fuck the Chantry. Fuck what they think. Fuck everyone who thinks she did this to herself and her friends (though at this point no one knows about her friends who died). If she hadn’t been so frazzled and defensive, Roderick probably would have gotten punched.
Does the Inquisitor decide to approach the mages or the Templars?
Mages. Laurina doesn’t much like Templars, and the threat of both the time magic and the Tevinters needed to be addressed.
In Hushed Whispers
How does the Inquisitor feel about mages and about recruiting them?
Laurina is very pro-mage and believes people should absolutely not be punished for how they’re born. The more people argue with her about it, the more stubborn she gets. The Dalish have had plenty of problems because of the fears of others, so she doesn’t think that fear excuses anything.
How does the Inquisitor react to the idea of allying with Tevinter to gain the mages’ support?
She’s stunned at Fiona having done something so idiotic. She sympathizes a little, but mostly she thinks Fiona was being incredibly naïve by believing that Alexius would treat them well.
How do they react to being thrown a year into the future? Do they believe they can get back? Are they focused on their goal, gathering information? Or are they just freaking out?
Honestly it’s a miracle they got out because she and Dorian kept having to remind themselves that this was not the time to be discussing how all this works.
Did they ally with the mages or conscript them? Why?
Ally. Laurina believes loyalty can never be earned at the end of a leash.
What is the Inquisitor’s relationship with Fiona?
Laurina respects how difficult of a choice she was faced with, but still believes she was naïve to how brutal the real world can be. They don’t have much of a relationship, but Laurina checks in regularly to make sure the mages aren’t being treated badly.
In Your Heart Shall Burn
Does the Inquisitor help Harrit and save all possible citizens of Haven? Why?
Yes. When the first blast from the dragon came a switch flipped in her brain and she realized, like it or not, all of these people were her responsibility.
How does the Inquisitor feel about being a distraction for Corypheus while Haven flees? Are they resigned to their fate? Resentful? Determined to defeat the enemy/survive?
She is happy to do it; glad to know that whatever happens she’ll have done all she could. Still struggling with everything that’s happened to her, a part of her is almost relieved that she might be going to her death.
Does the encounter with Corypheus change their opinion of being Herald? Does it make them believe they are the Herald, lose faith, or affirm to their previous belief?
Laurina’s opinion doesn’t change. She knows she’s not sent by the Maker. It upsets her that everyone thinks so, and a part of her feels like it’s taking something away from her; saying it’s divine providence rather than her own abilities keeping her alive.
How do they react to Solas telling them the orb is elvhen?
She prepares herself – she knows that Solas is right and they’ll eventually be blamed.
How do they feel about being chosen for Inquisitor?
Laurina never really wanted this, but after Haven she’s determined to protect these people, and she knows that she can do that best as the Inquisitor. Besides, Laurina is a natural leader, and dislikes taking orders from others; she would have had difficulty if someone else had been made Inquisitor. She also is pleased about being an elf in such an influential role.
What do they say are the principle foundations for the Inquisition?
“An elf will lead us all.”
From the Ashes
How does the Inquisitor react to Hawke’s presence?
She knows the story of the Champion of Kirkwall very well, and it more than a little amused to meet the woman behind it. (Not least of all because Varric definitely made Hawke sound a lot calmer and more in control than she really is). Once she realizes just how much effort Varric put into pretending he didn’t know where Hawke was, she’s actually kind of amused.
Does the Inquisitor side with Varric or Cassandra during their fight?
Varric, though she tells them both off for fighting like this. It’s been long enough to render the fight irrelevant. Laurina believes Varric’s right when he says that Hawke would probably have been killed if she’d been at the Conclave, and she understands and empathizes with putting one’s friends above all else. She warns Varric not to lie to her again, but she doesn’t hold it against him. She expects Varric to have more loyalty to Hawke, he’s known her longer.
How well do they get along with Hawke? Do they agree with Hawke’s decisions?
She likes Hawke. Hawke’s funny and real, and the two of them have more than one conversation about the burden of responsibility.
Here Lies the Abyss
Who is the Warden contact?
Stroud.
How does the Inquisitor get along with them?
She respects him, but doesn’t feel any particular emotion towards him, one way or the other. If anything, she thinks he’s a little too righteous, and could stand to talk about ‘sacred duty’ a little less.
How do they react to finding out the Wardens are being used by Corypheus?
At this point nothing can surprise her anymore. Why wouldn’t that be just one more thing to have go wrong?
How does the Inquisitor react to being in the Fade?
She’s almost excited about it as Solas is. Bull and Cole are there too though, so she spends a fair amount of her energy trying to keep them calm.
Do they ever believe the spirit is actually of Divine Justinia?
Believe is probably too strong of a word, but she does consider it to be a possibility.
How do they react to the revelation regarding the Wardens’ involvement in the Conclave attack?
She isn’t particularly surprised. They already knew the Wardens were being controlled by Corypheus, so the revelation that he used them to attack the Conclave doesn’t catch her off guard.
Do they agree with Hawke or the Warden more?
Neither. She doesn’t think this is the time or the place, and that the whole situation is too complicated to be settled with a fist fight in the fade.
How do they respond to Hawke’s and the Warden’s fight?
“By the Creators, shut up already.”
How do they react to learning it was the Divine behind them in the Fade, not Andraste?
She’s pleased to have real memories back that leave no room for doubt that she wasn’t saved by divine intervention, and she hopes it may help her convince others that the Maker didn’t send or save her.
What would the Nightmare Demon have said to rattle the Inquisitor?
“The Inquisitor. So proud, so sure of herself. How do you expect to lead all these people, to protect them, when you couldn’t even protect your friends?”
What is on the Inquisitor’s tombstone (what is their greatest fear)?
Failure.
Who does the Inquisitor leave behind in the Fade? Why do they choose to do so?
Stroud. She likes Hawke better, she can’t stand the thought of making Varric lose his best friend, and it seems to be more Stroud’s duty than Hawke’s. Really though, she tries not to think about it too much.
Does the Inquisitor decide to exile the Wardens or have them fight alongside the Inquisition? What is their reasoning behind the decision?
Fight alongside. She can’t see any good reason for exiling them. In the long run, she’s certain that would do more harm than good.
Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts
What is their opinion on attending the ball in the first place? Do they think it’s a waste of time, a necessary duty, or something exciting?
Laurina doesn’t care for Orlesians, politics, or large gatherings, but grits her teeth and does her best. She knows it’s a necessary evil.
Do the companions/advisors believe the Inquisitor will do well at the palace, or is there a fear they’ll be kicked out within five minutes?
By this point most of them know her well enough to know that she can play the part quite well, if she so chooses. Most of them just hope she won’t be the receiver of too many insults.
How does the Inquisitor actually fare? Are they the belle of the ball, or do they barely scrape by?
Very well. It takes most of her self-restraint, but she bites her tongue when she needs to and plays the game with the best of them. She makes quite the impression on the court.
Does the Inquisitor gather blackmail information for Leliana? Gather caprice coins and stone halla? Find the Red Jenny caches?
Yes to all, especially the blackmail information. Laurina likes having something over all of these snobby nobles.
Does the Inquisitor fight Grand Duchess Florianne, or expose her?
Expose her. She figures it will strengthen her own position in the Game.
Who does the Inquisitor support for Orlesian rule?
She wants Briala to have the power. After much deliberation over which one will be easier to control, Laurina finally decides to reconcile Briala and Celene and put them in power.
What Pride Had Wrought
How does the Inquisitor get along with Morrigan?
She thinks she’s arrogant and condescending. With enough time the two of them could have become friends – they certainly have enough in common – but circumstances don’t allow for that.
Does the Inquisitor take the Pilgrim’s Path, or fight their way through?
The Pilgrim’s Path.
Does the Inquisitor ally with Abelas and the elven sentinels?
Yes.
Does the Inquisitor weaken Samson’s armor before fighting him?
Yes.
Who drinks from the Well of Sorrows? What is the reasoning behind the choice?
Laurina. This is a part of her history, and she will not allow Morrigan to take it in her place.
The Final Piece
If the Inquisitor drank from the Well, how do they react to finding out they are now a servant of Flemeth/Mythal?
Confused. This revelation is the first moment of beginning to shake Laurina’s devotion to her peoples’ religion.
Doom Upon All the World
How does the Inquisitor feel about facing Corypheus for the last time? Do they feel confident? Do they believe they will survive the encounter? How do they cope with the possibility of failure?
She will not fail. She won’t even consider the possibility of it. She can’t. She has to do this. She has to stop him, whatever it takes. She doesn’t let herself wonder whether or not she’ll survive.
Who becomes the next Divine? Is the Inquisitor in support of the decision?
Leliana. Laurina is fully in support of this, especially when compared to the possibility of Vivienne or Cassandra.
How do they react to Solas’ disappearance?
She’s heartbroken and confused. She doesn’t understand why he would leave the way he did, even after things ended between them. She has a tough time dealing with the lack of closure.
What does the Inquisitor decide to do after Corypheus is defeated? How do they focus the Inquisition?
She slowly starts turning forts and such back over to the country they belong to. She would rather the Inquisition stay mostly neutral, only stepping in if something else on Corypheus’ scale occurs.
PART THREE: Side quests/War Table
Sit In Judgment
How does the Inquisitor generally judge prisoners?
If she can recruit them, she usually does. She is not forgiving though, very few people are pardoned. If they aren’t useful, they’re probably dead.
What are the specific judgments passed to prisoners in-game?
Gereon Alexius
Research Magic
Grand Duchess Florianne

War Table
Does your Inquisitor generally use Force, Secrets, or Connections to complete War Table Operations? Why?
Force, unless Leliana or Josephine having compelling reasons to do otherwise. Laurina prefers the straightforward nature of Cullen’s approach.
What does the Inquisitor usually spend Inquisition Perks on?
More knowledge. Things that help her recruit more people, get more effective results from research, etc.
Fetch/Gathering Quests
Does the Inquisitor take time to collect the shards? Do they complete the Temple of Pride? Why or why not?
Yes. Laurina is not the type to leave any stone uncovered, and she wants to know why the Venatori are so interested.
Does the Inquisitor complete the Astrariums? Why or why not?
Yes. Again, she leaves no stone unturned. Besides, she figures out pretty quickly that there’s usually good stuff in those caves. And she likes studying the constellations.
Does the Inquisitor take time to complete side quests/recruit agents? Why or why not?
Yes. Laurina is pleased to have as much help as possible, whenever possible. And she likes proving that the Inquisition cares about more than just the big picture.
PART FOUR: Relationships/Companion Quests
General
Who does the Inquisitor prefer to have in their party? Why?
Solas, Cole, and Bull (once he is declared Tal-Vashoth). After Solas breaks up with her – and eventually leaves - Dorian takes his place in her party. She has the best relationship with them, and enjoys their company out in the field, as well as trusting them to have her back.
Which advisor is the Inquisitor closest to, if any?
Cullen, although the two of them don’t really become friends until after Corypheus’ defeat. They play a lot of chess together.
Who does the Inquisitor most often turn to for advice?
Solas or Cole. Laurina trusts them to give her the best advice they possibly can, and to offer opinions that make her think, but that she won’t instantly disagree with.
Who is the one the Inquisitor hangs out with the most in their free time?
Solas (before things end between them) and Dorian. It depends on what sort of company she wants. She also spends a lot of time with Blackwall before learning the truth about his past.
Who would be the one the Inquisitor tells their deepest, darkest secrets to?
Solas.
Are there any companions the Inquisitor wishes they were closer to? If so, which ones?
No. Laurina either likes someone or she doesn’t. If they aren’t close, they aren’t close.
Leliana:
What is the Inquisitor’s first impression of Leliana?
She was wary of her – a spymaster should always be kept an eye on.
Does the impression change over time? If yes, how so? If not, why?
She grows to like Leliana, but never forgets that she is, first and foremost, a spy.
What does Leliana think of the Inquisitor?
She likes that Laurina isn’t afraid to make the tough calls. The two of them aren’t the sort to trust others, but they do grow to like and respect each other a great deal.
Does the Inquisitor help Leliana find the Divine’s last message for her in Val Royeaux?
Yes.
Do they “soften” Leliana or confirm her “hardened” nature?
Confirm her ‘hardened’ nature.
Does the Inquisitor support the idea of Leliana being Divine?
Yes.
Cullen
What is the Inquisitor’s first impression of Cullen?
He’s a Templar and a human. Laurina doesn’t care for him, or trust him.
Does this impression change over time? If yes, how so? If not, why?
Yes. They become friends, and Laurina comes to both respect his views and to enjoy his company.
What does Cullen think of the Inquisitor?
He agrees with Cassandra that she was what was needed when they needed it, but he doesn’t much care for her either. He does come to enjoy her presence more and more though, and they eventually become good friends.
Does the Inquisitor play the chess game with Cullen? Do they let him win, play fair, or cheat?
She plays fair (and is fully aware that he lets her win. She knows she’s not good enough to beat him).
Do they continue to play with him after the scene?
Yes, especially after Corypheus is defeated.
Does the Inquisitor convince Cullen to stay off lyrium, or tell him to start taking it again?
To stay off. She respects what he’s doing, and doesn’t want to lose him to addiction.
Does the Inquisitor assist Cullen in finding Samson’s base?
Yes.
Josephine
What is the Inquisitor’s first impression of Josephine?
Too nice. Laurina thinks she’s either up to something or naive.
Does this impression change over time? If yes, how so? If not, why?
Laurina comes to respect Josephine. She doesn’t understand how or why her methods work, but she recognizes that they do.
What does Josephine think of the Inquisitor?
At first she thinks she’s too brash. The two eventually become friends though.
Does the Inquisitor talk to Josephine about her work to help her relieve stress?
Yes.
Do they enjoy it? Does it continue to occur?
Yes. Laurina knows she wouldn’t be able to do Josephine’s job, and wants to be able to help a little. And few things are better for morale than gossiping about the nobility.
Does the Inquisitor help Josephine reinstate her family’s trade in Orlais?
Yes.
If yes, do they kill the agent from the House of Repose?
No. She doesn’t see the point, it wouldn’t do anything, and she’s a little afraid it will turn the House of Repose on the Inquisition.
Do they decide to take Josephine’s route of nullifying the contract, or Leliana’s?
Laurina thinks Leliana’s way sounds too easy and doubts it would work, so she takes Josephine’s route.
Cassandra
What is the Inquisitor’s first impression of Cassandra?
Absolutely dismal. Laurina hates Cassandra at first, for a lot of reasons.
Does this impression change over time? If yes, how so? If not, why?
Slowly but surely Laurina comes to respect Cassandra, and the two of them become friends, as long as they don’t talk about religion or politics.
What does Cassandra think of the Inquisitor?
She thinks Laurina is stubborn and arrogant, as well as quick to anger. Her opinion doesn’t change, exactly, but she does come to see Laurina as a friend, and those character traits no longer define Cassandra’s entire view of Laurina.
Does the Inquisitor find out about Cassandra’s “guilty pleasure?” If so, do they convince Varric to make the next chapter of Swords and Shields for her?
Yes and yes, and she considers it to be one of the all-time funniest things to ever happen to her.
Does the Inquisitor help Cassandra track down hunt down criminals left unchecked by the Seekers’ absence?
Yes.
Does the Inquisitor go with Cassandra to Caer Oswin to find the missing Seekers?
Yes.
If so, does the Inquisitor support Cassandra’s idea to rebuild the Seekers, or do they discourage her from doing so?
She encourages her. Laurina hopes Cassandra will be able to take a step towards changing how the Chantry operates out in the world.
Does the Inquisitor support the idea of Cassandra being Divine?
She likes the idea of Cassandra more than the idea of Vivienne, but not nearly as much as she likes the idea of Leliana being Divine. Cassandra isn’t quite revolutionary enough for her.
Varric
What is the Inquisitor’s first impression of Varric?
Anyone who talks about their crossbow like it’s a person can’t be all bad.
Does this impression change over time? If yes, how so? If not, why?
Laurina grows to like Varric, both for his sense of humor and for his disinterest in playing politics.
What does Varric think of the Inquisitor?
He reserves judgement for a long time. He can tell that Laurina is wound tight, and isn’t sure what she’s like when she’s relaxed for a long time.
If Varric could give the Inquisitor a nickname, what would it be?
Goldilocks. They know each other for months before he realizes she doesn’t know what he’s referencing.
Does the Inquisitor find and destroy the Red Lyrium sources across Thedas after learning about them from Varric?
Yes. Definitely not something Laurina wants lying around out there.
Does the Inquisitor help Varric and Bianca find the thaig inside Valammar?
Yes.
Does the Inquisitor blame Bianca for what happened?
Yes. She thinks Bianca could have - and should have - been smarter about it, and should have been more careful and more honest with them about what had happened.
Solas
What is the Inquisitor’s first impression of Solas?
‘Oh, thank the Creators, another elf.’
Does this impression change over time? If yes, how so? If not, why?
She falls in love with Solas without really realizing it, going from being relieved to see him, to enjoying his company, to valuing his company above all others.
What does Solas think of the Inquisitor?
He is surprised but how easily she can keep up with him when they talk about magic and the Fade, and how willing she is to accept new ideas.
Does the Inquisitor initiate a romance with Solas?
Yes.
What is it like? Why are they attracted to each other?
It starts off as an intellectual relationship, born of a mutual enjoyment of talking about theoretical magic and the Fade. They value each other’s perspectives. Things just unfolded from there.
How does the Inquisitor react to Solas breaking up with them?
She’s heartbroken and confused, and lashes out angrily to keep herself from crying in front of him.
Does the Inquisitor help Solas find and activate elvhen artifacts to strengthen the Veil?
Yes.
Does the Inquisitor help Solas rescue his friend in the Exalted Plains?
Yes.
Does the Inquisitor choose to destroy the summoning stones or fight the Pride Demon?
Destroy the summoning stones. She trusts Solas’ assessment of the situation.
Does the Inquisitor let Solas kill the mages or do they stop him?
She allows him to kill the mages. Laurina is not a merciful person.
How would the Inquisitor react to finding out Solas is Fen’harel?
She’s stunned, and any remaining faith she has in the religion she grew up believing in is completely shattered. Her worldview has been completely dismantled.
Does the Inquisitor choose to look for Solas after he disappears? Why or why not?
She tells Leliana to keep an eye out, but doesn’t actively search. She knows she won’t find Solas if he doesn’t want to be found.
Sera
Is Sera recruited?
Yes.
If she is, does she ever leave the Inquisition, and why?
No, although it comes close a few times.
What is the Inquisitor’s first impression of Sera?
She’s pleased to see another elf, and likes Sera’s cause.
Does this impression change over time? If yes, how so? If not, why?
Yes. It doesn’t take long at all for Laurina and Sera to start butting heads over almost everything. The two of them never become friends.
What does Sera think of the Inquisitor?
She thinks she’s ‘too elfy’ and thinks too much of herself.
Does the Inquisitor complete the Red Jenny War Table missions?
Yes. Laurina doesn’t like Sera, but she likes the idea of the Red Jennys.
Does the Inquisitor agree to send a presence to Verchiel for Sera?
Yes.
How does the Inquisitor deal with Lord Harmond?
Force him to work for the Inquisition. Laurina is a very opportunistic person.
Vivienne
What is the Inquisitor’s first impression of Vivienne?
She’s impressed by both her abilities and her ruthlessness.
Does this impression change over time? If yes, how so? If not, why?
No. She remains impressed by those two things, but never grows any fonder of Vivienne.
What does Vivienne think of the Inquisitor?
That she doesn’t respect the way the world works.
Does the Inquisitor help Vivienne look for the three tomes for the Circle of Magi?
Yes.
Does the Inquisitor agree to find Vivienne the heart of a Snowy Wyvern?
Yes.
Do they actually give Vivienne the heart, or do they give her the heart of a regular wyvern?
Laurina gives her the right heart. She’s a woman of her word.
Does the Inquisitor support the idea of Vivienne being Divine?
No. Laurina does not agree with Vivienne on much of anything, and does not want her running the Chantry.
Blackwall
What is the Inquisitor’s first impression of Blackwall?
She likes him, though his being a Grey Warden pulls up some painful memories for her.
Does this impression change over time? If yes, how so? If not, why?
Laurina comes to like Blackwall’s company, and his willingness to leave her be when she needs peace and quiet.
What does Blackwall think of the Inquisitor?
He respects how strong she’s stayed through what she’s been through, and wants to help her, both with her duties as Inquisitor and with some of her more personal difficulties, such as her survivor’s guilt.
Does the Inquisitor help Blackwall find Grey Warden information across Thedas?
Yes.
How does the Inquisitor react to finding out Rainier’s true identity?
She feels hurt and betrayed.
Do they leave them in Val Royeaux or bring them back to Skyhold for judgment?
She brings him back and pardons him, although she’s uncertain if that’s the right decision.
Dorian
What is the Inquisitor’s first impression of Dorian?
She was wary of trusting a Tevinter.
Does this impression change over time? If yes, how so? If not, why?
When stuck together in the future the two of them became friends very quickly, and Dorian soon became one of her favorite people in the Inquisition.
What does Dorian think of the Inquisitor?
He enjoys her company and respects her intelligence.
Does the Inquisitor help Dorian find and track down Venatori?
Yes.
Does the Inquisitor learn that Dorian’s father wishes to speak with him?
Yes.
Do they tell Dorian about the letter or not?
Yes. He’s her friend, she’s not going to deceive him.
Do they urge Dorian to reconcile with his father, or do they let Dorian leave without reconciliation?
Leave without reconciliation. Laurina’s view of family doesn’t include bloodlines, so she doesn’t understand why anyone would encourage him to reconcile with his father after what he did.
Cole
What is the Inquisitor’s first impression of Cole?
She doesn’t understand what he is – she can tell he’s not human – but he seems to want to help, so she lets him.
Does this impression change over time? If yes, how so? If not, why?
Cole quickly becomes one of Laurina’s favorite people, and she trusts him more than anyone else she’s ever met. She always knows where she stands with Cole, and she appreciates that.
What does Cole think of the Inquisitor?
That she also wants to help, even when they have different methods.
When Cole helps people, does the Inquisitor encourage their spirit-like methods (such as making people forget him and mercy killings), or convince him there are different ways to help?
A little of both. She understands that mercy killings are sometimes necessary, but also wants to help teach him more human ways of helping people.
Does the Inquisitor urge Cole to forgive the Templar and embrace his spirit nature, or learn to grow by confronting the Templar and becoming more human?
To confront him and become more human. She believes it will be better for him, in the long run. And Varric’s right – he came here to be a person.
Iron Bull
What is the Inquisitor’s first impression of Iron Bull?
She doesn’t like the idea of hiring a Qunari. She only agrees because of how upfront he is about being a spy, and because she needs all the help she can get. She is also not very invested in the Inquisition yet, and doesn’t much care if they end up screwed over.
Does this impression change over time? If yes, how so? if not, why?
After Bull is declared Tal-Vashoth they become close, and discover they actually have a lot in common.
What does Iron Bull think of the Inquisitor?
He thinks she’s good people, and a good person to have on his side. He appreciates how much she helps ground him after he is declared Tal-Vashoth.
Is the Inquisition approached by the Ben-Hassrath to secure a formal alliance?
Yes.
During the attack of the dreadnaught, does the Inquisitor sacrifice the dreadnaught and the alliance, or Bull’s Chargers?
She sacrifices the dreadnaught. She didn’t really want an alliance anyway, she doesn’t trust the Qun.
