Trump can’t do ANYTHING for his base

Trump's coalition includes a huge number of people who will suffer terribly from his policies, but who voted for him anyway. Trumpism requires that he find ways to keep those Christmas-voting turkeys happy, or at least distracted.

Trump's go-to move for keeping his base happy is inflicting pain on people they hate, like immigrants, racialized people, queers and women. That goes a long way, obviously: there's a kind of person who can be distracted from their own deteriorating material condition by the spectacle of cruel treatment for their enemies.

But Trumpism can't just run on sadism. There's a lot of people who enjoy the sadism, but not so much that it cancels out their own rage at their deteriorating personal conditions. Trump's main tactic is to blame the suffering of his base on the rest of us: "radical leftists," "wokeism" and other hobgoblins of the small-minded. That, too, has its limits – especially when Trump controls Congress, the courts, the senate and the White House. Obviously, Trump isn't above blaming his own people for being traitors (e.g., by sending a literal noose-bearing lynch mob after his own vice president), but there are limits to this, even for Trump. If all the power-brokers in Trump's coalitions are branded as disloyal, cowardly, or traitorous, Trump will have no one left to do the actual work of advancing his agenda.

Ultimately, keeping Trump's base happy requires providing some form of material benefit to that base. Every authoritarian has a version of this – like the cash handouts that Poland's former far-right government gave out:

For Trump, this presents a problem: because he represents the interests of exploitation, extraction and looting, everything nice that he gives to everyday people in his base potentially gores the ox of someone who really matters to him. It's no surprise, for example, that he reversed Biden's price-cuts for Big Pharma's most expensive drugs – the cheaper drugs are for sick people, the less profitable they'll be for pharma companies:

Luckily (for Trump), Biden's consumer protection and antitrust agencies teed up a long list of extremely good policies that would directly shift money from rich parasites to everyday people. For example, the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau passed a rule that would make it very easy to find out which bank would charge you the least and pay you the most, and let you switch banks with one click:

It was a move that would have shifted $667m/year from banks to everyday people, every year, forever. But Trump's most important barons, like Elon Musk, hated the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau and insisted that it be shuttered, so that $667m/year will go to the banks after all – indeed, virtually all of the good things Biden's CFPB decreed the American public would enjoy henceforth have been destroyed. Sure, Trump would have liked to have taken credit for these, but the conflict between stolen valor and displeasing Shadow President Musk will always cash out in Musk's favor.

It's not just the CFPB. The FTC also set up a whole roster of ambitious projects to improve life for Americans. Some of these made the news in a big way, like the antitrust case against Meta:

Trump has lots of upsides from pursuing the Meta case. Everyone hates Meta products, including (especially) the people who are trapped using them because that's where their friends, family, communities, customers or audiences are. Breaking up Meta would be hugely popular with the American people. But also, once a court has convicted Meta of violating antitrust law, Trump can solicit favors – cash and favorable algorithmic treatment – from Meta in exchange for ordering his FTC to go easy on Meta in the "remedy phase," letting them off with a fine, rather than forcing them to spin out Whatsapp and Instagram:

But even if Trump lets Meta walk, there's plenty of great stuff Biden's FTC did that he could take credit for – policies that would help everyday people.

The most prominent of these is the FTC's "Click to Cancel" rule. It's a pretty simple rule: companies have to make it as easy to cancel a subscription as it was to sign up for it.

In other words, they can't do that thing – beloved of everything from the New York Times to every manosphere influencer's supplement business – where you can sign up for a subscription with one click, but you can't cancel unless you phone them, wait on hold, and beg them to let you off the hook.

Companies do this on purpose, because it's super profitable. Amazon executives carried on internal email threads where they straight up said that they'd deliberately made it confusingly easy to sign up for Prime and basically impossible to stop paying for it:

This is a no-brainer. Companies make signing up for subscriptions into a greased slide, and they make canceling subscriptions into a greased pole.

No wonder, then, that when the FTC solicited public comments on a proposed "click to cancel" rule, they had no trouble building up the evidentiary record needed to pass the rule.

Now, Trump's FTC has announced that they are delaying enforcement of the rule until mid-July:

This is the second time they've delayed enforcement (originally, the rule was supposed to go into effect in January). Trump FTC chairman Andrew Ferguson had no trouble getting the votes for the suspension, because he illegally fired the two Democratic Commissioners, Alvaro Bedoya and Rebecca Slaughter:

Ferguson is proof that the FTC can't do anything material for Trump's base. Sure, he can set up a snitch-line so tht FTC employees can rat each other out for being "woke":

This should be a slam dunk. It epitomizes the "unfair and deceptive" business practices Section 5 of the FTC Act empowers the agency to snuff out. The Trump admin is unwilling to gore the ox of out-and-out scammers, people who trick you into unkillable subscriptions. It seems that there's no material benefit that Trump's oligarch backers are willing to cede to working people. All they can offer is cruelty.

There's been a lot of ENA fics out there about the reader appearing in Ena's surreal world, but what if we reversed that? Do you think you could create some headcanons or a fic or something (platonic is preferred, but I don't mind if it's romantic) where the reader somehow accessed a window to Ena's world online?

Like, the reader finds an archive of some ancient website from the 90s on the backwaters of the internet and they download a file expecting it to be a video game, except once they start playing it they can't manually move the camera? There's no menus, no controls, and some NPC(?) with a green hat and red and white face can hear them and interact with them??? What kind of a game is this???

Then we cut to a few weeks later and Ena is chilling in a window off to the side of their PC, giving vaguely business sounding advice about the reader's worklife as the reader downloads jpgs of snacks and placing it randomly in the "game's" files in an attempt to send Ena a cookie. They meet up and do this every week, taking turns on who plays therapist with the other.

Bored out of your mind you decided to pull out your laptop from your backpack. You had a short break soon so a bit of slacking off wouldn’t do much harm. A site long forgotten caught your attention, filled with old indie games that barely had a review or a few downloads caught your attention. You clicked on it, curious about what ancient relics you might stumble upon. A bright flashy coloured game with a very alluring aura popped up on your screen. “Business guide.. huh.. what a strange name for a game….” Thirsty for some kind of distraction in your tedious work place you decided to click the green download button,without caring about any potential viruses or hackers. You were downloading stuff from a very old website afterall.

A funny but very old fashioned music played when you clicked the icon of the newly installed game. You turned the volume down,afraid of disturbing or possibly making your coworkers aware of your messing around. The melody reminded you of old toys from kindergarten,that one festivity you practiced back then and the smell of forgotten candy.

Suddenly a weird NPC girl revealed herself on your screen, her face was split in the middle, one side red and the other a pale bluish colour. She looked a bit pixelated and had a few lags to her movements but the animation was overall pretty good for those distant times. She tipped her green hat with a mischievous smile on her red side and presented herself as ENA, a hardworking young saleswoman who was looking forward to helping you achieve full potential “Hello young fella! You look like a person who would fit right into my company! Would you be interested in finding out more?”.

The game didn’t have any options other than replying to her dialogues. You were surprised how real she seemed and the game gave you a really creepy vibe. You thought that the dialogue options were extremely varied and clever for a simple old game, with only two reviews as well.

Whenever you took too much time to reply, ENA would tap the screen and look right into your eyes saying “I know you’re there. It would be of poor manners to not reply when someone is talking to you..”. Her dark pupils would pierce your very core, as if she could really see you in real time, talking and typing away your answers.

This became pretty much a routine for you, talking with her about your stupid job, how your lazy boss was slacking around and pressing you to write more and more reports, even going as far as requesting you to stay afterhours to finish leftover paperwork. ENA would sympathize or express her own matching frustration “IF I WERE IN YOUR SHOES I WOULD SLAP THE LIVING CRAP OUT OF THAT BALOON SIZED DIPSHIT!”. You laugh. She’s satisfied that you thank her for her efforts at easing up you building anger.

You begun talking to her at home as well,it felt as if she was your only friend in a worlf where you were often unseen and ignored. Her attentiveness was appreciated by you and your shared feelings and vents formed an irreplaceable bond. You would relate to her overworked self when after too many job listings she would let her own feelings slip from between her lips.

Her face popped up everywhere. On your TV or in the corner of your work presentations, on your phone and social media pages and even in your microwave! You were frightened at first but soon got used to it since she was everything you had left. With no friends or family members that would pay any mind to you, solitude made itself a home inside your soul,making you desperate for any kind of attention or attachment you might receive. ENA felt the same, she told you about the hostility of the entities in her world and how she felt as if her only purpose was to serve others and help them with different errands. You empathized with her.

Figuring out how to give her a small token of appreciation was a bit difficult. She rigged a few sites for you, allowing you to other things you liked without paying. You wanted to reciprocate her kindness with something.. but how? She was a digital being, how could you do something for her? Nevertheless after long hours of pondering you came up with a solution. Description: Things are looking dire, even with your team giving it their all, but thankfully there's one man that can turn the tide of battle... with your help and the help of Sue Storm, of course.

Warnings/Disclaimers: Mostly fluff! There's a bit of a battle and some brief descriptions of injury and pain (getting shot at but not piercing past armor/suits), but nothing too graphic I hope.

A/N: Originally I wasn't going to stray too far from the prompt, but for some reason I was itching to write at least a little bit of a battle scene. Trying to expand my horizons beyond fluff and smut and all that.

Word Count: 1.7k

It was your job. Your job! You had some of the most potent healing capabilities out of anyone you had seen in these battles you fought day after day. Under the right conditions, you alone could change the course of a fight. There was so much power crackling at your fingertips, so much potential to mend and soothe and reverse…

…That is, assuming you can aim those powers. Thankfully, you weren’t the only medic on the field, and they seemed to be taking care of your more mobile allies well enough. Doesn’t mean you don’t try.

You were incredible on the ground; of that, there was no doubt. Buildings could topple, crumble, crash around you, and lasers could be firing from all angles, but you would still persist, still heal, still fulfill your duty. Sweat could pour down your forehead and the salt would sting your eyes, and yet you would never falter once.

Still, nobody is perfect. When someone is that effective on the field, it only makes sense that they would become the focus of enemy fire, and eventually, something is bound to hit. You see Castle’s turret assembling in the distance and prepare for the worst.

“Punisher’s got a turret! Find cove-augh!” Your warning cuts off when several bullets embed themself into the shoulder of your suit, and you hiss at the sharp ache that echoes from the site of your new wounds. The durable material is strong enough to keep them from piercing the skin, but that doesn’t make the pain much better. When you try to roll your arm, to get back in the fight, a searing agony burns at the edge of your clavicle. There’s definitely a clicking sensation that wasn’t there before. 

Heaving a breath, you duck behind a crumbling wall, clutching your arm. Healing energy courses through your fingertips and finds its way to your shoulder, and you tense and shudder, gritting your teeth as the injury reverses itself. It’s never been the most pleasant thing, but it works, and it’s fast, fast enough that it’s only seconds before you’re back in the fight.

Thankfully, it seems your callout didn’t go unheeded. The rest of your team peeks over cover, alternating their fire towards that damn turret, bringing a sigh of relief to your lips. If any stray shots graze them, you’re quick to wave your hand and reverse it in an instant from the safety of your hiding spot. Still, it’s difficult to find a proper opening as the fight heads towards a stalemate.

“We can’t stay like this forever!” you hear your co-healer, Sue Storm, stress from somewhere several feet away. “If they keep us pinned here, it’s only a matter of time before the rest of them collapse on us.”

She’s right. Slowly drilling damage into that turret won’t be effective enough if the rest of your enemies can take advantage and push forward. Your team needs something big, and fast.

Enter Tony Stark. Enter Iron Man.

If you were the pillar holding up your allies, he was the bulldozer tearing through the enemy. He was a force to be reckoned with in that suit. Nearly unstoppable.

“Just keep them off me. I’ve got this.” 

That confident voice fills your heart with hope. The whirring of propulsion jets whizzes past you, whipping your hair into your face as you duck out of the way, but you do your best to follow him with starstruck eyes and a beaming smile.

It wasn't your best-kept secret, your crush on Tony. Adam Warlock nearly outed you once when he described you “having a certain glow” about you whenever you were near the charismatic philanthropist. Poor guy was absolutely blindsided when you nearly jumped on him to get him to shut up.

He zips about, dodging bullet after bullet. Sue keeps him shielded while you focus on healing your allies on the ground, occasionally throwing a few healing rays towards Iron Man that never quite seem to find purchase. Still, they're able to take the pressure off of Tony just long enough--

“MAXIMUM PULSE!”

Even behind the crumbling wall that covers you, the heat and blinding light hit you in an instant. It’s deafening. Sue withdraws her shields to cover your team as the shockwave blasts across the battlefield. Rubble clatters across the translucent barrier over your heads. Once the dust settles, everything falls silent save for the sounds of exasperated breaths and the telltale rumble of propulsion jets, but even that is muffled by the lingering ringing in your ears.

Finally, you venture a peek. The area is absolutely decimated thanks to Stark's weaponry. Punisher's turret is nothing but scraps, you think you see the remnants of a few of Hawkeye's experimental arrows, and a few pieces of one of Rocket’s beacons lie scattered about. The enemy team themselves are nowhere to be seen. Thankfully, the exact opposite is true of your team, and a quick once-over on the ground confirms that everyone is alive and accounted for.

Your smile only widens as relief washes over you.

“He did it!” you exclaim, allowing yourself a pump of your fist into the air. It’s as if a weight has been lifted from your chest, leaving you light as a feather, and you smile so wide that your cheeks start to hurt.

“We did it. I can't take all of the credit here.” Iron Man's voice suddenly behind you nearly has you leaping out of your skin. Damn tinnitus. “Even if I wouldn’t mind the praise of doing it all by myself,” he adds jokingly. 

The rest of your team gather their bearings, groaning a bit as they stand but otherwise hale and whole, and before Sue goes to inspect them for any lingering injuries, she gives you a knowing smirk. “I'll take care of these guys. Why don't you give the star of the show a more… personal touch?”

Your eyes widen and she giggles behind her hand, refusing to elaborate further as she ushers the rest of them away and leaves the two of you alone. You clear your throat awkwardly.

He hovers in his suit in front of you when you turn to face him, heat creeping up your chest and face. The faceplate of his helmet retracts, and you’re greeted with that familiar, handsome mug that regards you warmly.

“Promise I’ll sit still this time,” he quips.

Ah, so your efforts had not gone unnoticed. You’re not sure whether to be touched or embarrassed by that. A nervous hand scratches at the back of your neck.

“Yeah, I…” you pause, tittering shyly as your eyes flicker up to his and then quickly back away. “You’re pretty fast. Hard to keep up with you sometimes.”

That earns you a chuckle, and he slowly lowers down to stand properly on the ground. Now that he’s standing still in front of you, you can see that he didn’t come out of the battle entirely unscathed. It’s nothing serious, thankfully, and there doesn’t seem to be any blood, but you venture a step closer, examining the dents and dings on his armor that could potentially be causing any internal damage underneath.

When he sees the power beginning to glow at your fingertips, he nods at your hands. “Would it be easier if I removed my armor, or--?”

“N-No, this is fine,” you respond quickly, giving him a feeble smile. “I can just reverse the damage, so it’s honestly easier if the site of the injury remains unchanged.”

He huffs out a quick laugh. “Got it. I won’t pretend to understand this magic stuff, and I certainly won’t question your expertise.”

Your smile grows a bit wider at that. “I appreciate it. Fair warning, this might hurt a little.”

Before he gets the chance to properly protest, the energy surges forth, and in that tiny bubble you reverse time as armor shifts back into place and flesh begins to lose its bruising. Tony’s eyes go wide and his lips press into a flat line, desperately trying not to let out anything more than a discontented grunt as he’s forced to relive the pain in reverse for a fleeting second. Such are the drawbacks when it comes to the nature of your powers, but no one can argue the effectiveness of it.

At least it distracts you from the closeness you two share, even if you’re not eager to break it.

“That should be good, but…” Your voice trails off as you admire the shining red metal, examining it for anything you might have missed. There are a few trivial scuffs here and there. Feeling slightly braver, you rest your palm directly against his armor and trace along the scrapes and chips that linger from the suit’s everyday use. “There you go. Good as new.”

You glance up at his face and blink in surprise when you find him watching you intently. Perhaps your eyes fail you, or you’ve been staring at crimson for too long, but you swear his face is ever so slightly flushed. The healing energy fades, and your fingertips rest gingerly against his plated chest.

“Fascinating,” he breathes. “Does that work on wrinkles, too?”

A snort leaves your nostrils. Shaking your head, you reply, “Probably not. At least, I’ve never tried, but my power works in real time. I’d have to be at it for days, weeks, months, even.”

“An excuse to spend more time with you? Perish the thought,” he jests, leaving you to part your lips softly agape in shock. You never realized that he enjoyed his time with you as well. 

“Oh, and…” he adds, tapping a finger to his smirking lips, “You missed a spot.”

With your heart thumping in your chest, you decide to play it safe and take his words literally as your hand tentatively rises to meet his face. He chuckles and presses a soft kiss to your fingers before taking your hand in his, guiding it away from his face and leaning forward to claim his real prize. My friend - Spirit is telling you that you need to trust yourself! You find yourself hiding away from the unknown, and even the unknown within you. Tap into those darker, deeper parts that you've been shying away from. It's only by integrating those parts that you can become whole.
