i saw this tweet and found it interesting for two reasons. one is that some people base how good cartoon network would be to toh by how it treated su, and despite the fact that su’s treatment by the network was considered poor at the time, now its thought to be exceptionally good in comparison to modern shows.
two is how exactly su got impacted by a limited budget. a common criticism is how characters like connie, peridot, and lapis are left out of missions. but balancing a lot of characters is not only hard but also costly (extra animation, extra voices—it’s been revealed that the show is limited to a set number of characters per episode otherwise they’re over budget). animation mistakes are not uncommon since retakes cost extra. the entire reason the original show got cut short was due to loss of funding!
#i don’t know if pay rates differ per networks#but a.ivi and s.urrashu have said that they needed to work outside of su in order to make sufficient funds#it only makes me wonder what other ways su suffered from a lower budget#that we as the audience never got to see#in the vein of the too-little characters complaint#another part of that is that low-stakes episodes should’ve been abt the main cast instead of the townies#like last one out of beach city and too short to ride vs restaurant wars and kiki’s pizza delivery service#i definitely see that especially since that isn’t budget related#nor would it seem to be network related (even if cn had an ‘episodic episodes’ quota it could still be abt the gems#(another side note: /would/ cn even have a requirement that the show make episodes that can be watched standalone?#this is a question for the people who were around when su was airing#what episodes often got rerun?#was it the townie eps or the lore eps?#for example i heard that su once did a ‘peridot event’ where they just reran peridot episodes#which had eps that skip around in the show#did they even care about airing the story so that it made sense anyways?#id get it if the low stakes townie episodes were the ones getting rerun))#but i have such a boring view on that which is i think it’s simply because the creators like townie eps#like in interviews r.ebecca s.ugar has said she’s the type to be really invested in background characters#answers in interviews have been crafted in ways to hide what’s really going on though tbf#prime example of this is rebecca and ian saying the wedding being interrupted was meant to follow the common trope#when later in the art book they said that it was bc cn rejected the ep bc it ‘wasn’t interesting enough’#both could simultaneously be true! it’s a psychology thing though where people make up nice-sounding explanations behind what they create#in retrospect because they want it to be thought out in such a nice way they believe in it#the bigger problem is that not matter how many episodes there are of them#it can be hard for ppl to be invested in the townies the same way they are invested in the main cast#i’m sure that a million writers have made surefire advice on how to get an audience to care about characters#but off the top of my head i think it’s because 1. most don’t have strong motivations to get truly invested in#(exception is ronaldo but people find him too annoying to care about him)#okay i had more points and explanations but i hit the tag limit and idk if anyone is actually reading this so bye

when they've got interpreting spiderman noir under a specific cultural lens at the function [picture of me going insane]
I cant help myself.. what can i say. And since you've mentioned some research going on behind the scenes.. do you have any fun interpretations? Or even anything fun about the 1800s!
OH HI
Hm. I don't have anything as fun as historical dancing, but I suppose this does give me the excuse (thabk u) to blab about Noir's childishness.
(wow putting this under the cut bc it got longer than I thought it would LMAO)
I think what a lot of people (including Noir's contemporary writers and yes even the spiderverse interpretation) fall for when trying to read Noir's character is the imitation of his idea of what an adult is, that he hides behind. Like Noir's persona is incredibly exaggerated. He's playing pretend. Look here, he's practicing.
A lot of his persona as Noir is imitation! Imitation of his uncle, of Urich, of the violence he's been exposed to. He's running around in his uncle's old uniform. Fundamentally misunderstanding WHY his uncle had been ashamed of it and his role in the war.
And then he goes ahead and steals Urich's alias because it sounds Cool (which is such a teenage thing to do jesus christ).
But like that imitation of The Adult isn't something that's limited to that exaggerated persona that Noir encapsulates. Peter himself is trying So Hard to be grown up and tough and responsible that it loops back around to him being a brat who would try the three guys in a trench coat trick. He even gets beat up for it when trying to defend his aunt. And I mean I've posted about him being a brat.
About how he looks at Urich as a Prime Example of what a strong and knowledgeable adult is (which is part of why he reacts so volatile in response to Urich showing he's not exactly as morally righteous as himself, he's wounded and let down). Whiskey? Whiskey sounds like someone Mature and Cool would drink, I'll have it too. And then proceeds to throw his drink at Osborn and laugh about it. The illusion was broken for me then.
But well it's not broken for everyone. I mean like obviously I poked at the contemporary writers, but I'm more talking about the other characters in the narrative. Mainly Urich and Felicia.
Urich taking Peter under his wing isn't entirely under the motivation to nurture Peter. I think it Becomes that, but he's really envious of that kid. He wants to see him lose that hope that he once had (ruh roh the opposite thing happened, being around the kid made YOU more hopeful Ben. Guess you gotta be good. Hope you don't die now).
Urich really is exposing him to an extremely harsh reality, and taking him places where adults are typically only allowed. He's letting Peter get a glimpse into what it's like, which will eventually enable Noir's tool of violence. All these tests will accumulate into what Peter thinks someone powerful and strong can be and do.
Then his problematic relationship with Felicia (writers I'm malleting you for this). He's clinging to her adulthood and the safety she represents, and he's young but she sees some adult strength in him. I mean she trusts him with the blackmail Urich gave her, which she really. Shouldn't, even if that's what Urich wanted.
Anyway, strength is something she's been consistently drawn to her in her partners. Strength to feel as her own. Even if it's to hers and others' detriment. There's also a part of Peter that's drawn to Felicia because Urich was. He's still honing in the good parts of Urich he wants to be.
I think the one person in the narrative who doesn't fall for it? Is Aunt May. You could argue it's just her being naturally motherly, but for someone who was about to be eaten alive she's pretty frank with Noir. I think she can see that that violence and exaggerated grittiness comes from someone inexperienced and young. Even if she can't consciously recognize the similarities between Noir's persona and Peter's protectiveness of her. I don't think she wants to see that. I actually have a short comic script about that, but it probably will never see the light of day.
Ugh he's like a cat puffing up to scare away a predator. It's fake!!!!! It's all fake!!!!!! He gets intimidated by JJ, he never ties his shoes, gets powers and then immediately guns to beat the shit out of Osborn, sings about the sandman when he's getting his face bashed in, crawls to Felicia all pathetic and sad, and he made a costume to run over roofs at night in.
And it's funny how he's forcing himself to grow up, but also really sad because all the things he's being exposed to is already forcing him to grow up. He's witnessing things no kid should ever see or experience.
Then there's the time period to consider. The aftermath of WWI, being in the midst of the Great Depression, and WWII just around the corner. He's faced incredible hardship and is going to continue to face so much hardship, and he's going to mature faster than he ever should have. It should have made him crash and burn Hard when he became an adult, and to me he still does because I'm ignoring everyone after ewaof LMAO.
As for my research on the 1800s NY that's for my own spider iteration run I'm working on, so not too related to Noir until I reach the 30's :3
Hope that was satisfying!!
#tw grooming#critter talks#asks#the moots#fool!!!!!!#spider man noir#character analysis#abt the research like logically I know the typical new yorker isn't gonna know abt the specificities of the original dutch colony#and intricacies that the boom of industrialization had on lower class communities#but it's less about that and more of digging my hands into the Soul of NY#because NY is so Intertwined with any spider#so I'm starting from the Very beginning and digging my way up. man y'all were a hot mess#it's really fascinating though working my way through documentaries and books. the list is long and the dent I've made is about an 8th ASDF#anyway MAYBE y'all will see spiderman undiscovered one day...ask me abt it again if y'all like miles being a detective w a shoulder demon#for now it's me my 55 of world building slides several character note docs and a to read list of about 20 books long#would like to go to NY citay one day & oogle at the stinky subway draw some storefronts and people watch but thats not in the budget rn#also trying to look for movies n shows that aren't exaggerations of the culture so if anyone has recommendations DO @ me please#wanna do her justice bc I care about her#ALSO FOOL I'M SO SORRY FOR TAKING A DAY TO ANSWER#had to get my thoughts togther

i think the problem about the watcher situation is they literally only produce like 1-2 videos a week. if you have a channel like GMM or smosh that produce 5-6 videos a week, maybe the monthly paid subscription would be feasible? but even those channels put the vast majority of their content out for free and just offer an optional paid membership to get exclusive content. paying anywhere from $1.50 to $0.75 for one 20-40 minute video when actual streaming services offer you hours of content for around the same price just does not feel equal at all.
#watcher#i also liked their content when it felt lower production tbh#most actual reality tv IS lower production#why do you need a film level budget to watch steven lim eat caviar or to watch ryan be scared of the wind

thoughts/braindump about the new zelda game:
-PLAYABLE ZELDA!!!!!!
-fairy design VERY good. what a funky little creature. also i can't believe zelda is hyrule's first poketrainer
-god i almost feel like this would work really well if it was closer to like the tunic style? tunic isn't nintendo but it's very much a love letter to games like alttp and i think it really does a good job mixing the cute/charming with the sinister/mysterious in a way that would REALLY make those portals hit harder visually.
-i don't have a problem with the cutesy-ness of it - wind waker + the other toon games are some of my favorite zelda games visually and they go for a cuter style, but they work really well because they're a) a really nice stylized mix of 2d/3d and b) the character models are all very very emotive, exceptionally so for zelda games especially. by contrast, the link's awakening remake style they're bringing back for this game is very. plastic looking. instead of inviting you into this colorful world, it pushes you a step back emotionally, because you're playing with plastic dolls, and even worse they're plastic dolls that barely emote. cartooning relies on exaggeration - exaggerated emotion, movements, character design, etc. plastic looking 3d chibis running around a plastic chibi world are stiff, their movements are limited, their expressions feel fake.
-re playable zelda: yay!!!!! re the visual style they're going with: vaguely disappointed, but unsurprised. totk came out last year, and reusing this style means they're probably recycling assets from link's awakening (models/rigs/animations, environment models, probably all of the coding for the mechanics/enemy behaviors) which means it can come out faster and cost less money.
-i'm kinda assuming this is them testing the waters with playable zelda, and maybe if this game is successful they'll decide it's worth spending money/time/resources on a more serious game featuring player zelda.
-might do some fanart of the new zelda in the toon/windwaker style and maybe play around with scenes from the trailer to put it in the tunic style? we'll see
-where in the timeline is this Eiji Aonuma??pink crystal zelda is from oot. dont tell me this is a FOURTH timeline Eiji Aonuma i'll lose it. you still haven't explained what the hell is going on with totk. sir. mr zelda man. please
#echoes of wisdom#i know i compared it to toon link but honestly i think this style is nintendo's knew version of the pixel zelda games#like with loz there are the big budget 3d games. and then there are the pixel games which are a little simpler overall#(pre-oot everything was pixel i know i know i mean since oot it's been mainline 3d vs less mainline lower budget pixel games)#but pixel is i guess not in fashion anymore and/or more expensive/time consuming to produce#so instead they're using this plastic style. 3d models look like plastic by default so they dont gotta worry about textures so much#they can probably use the same base model and rig for every character#and there are fewer/less complex animations

i started replaying totk recently, i say replaying bc i did buy and play it when it was first released but dropped it after a couple days bc i was busy w stuff. and so i'm doing a lot of things now for the first time and obv i can't help comparing it to botw and it's genuinely got me so upset how link has been forgotten by so many people, all the people he helped in botw all the quests he did are just meaningless, all my registered horses were carried over but they couldn't keep the character interactions? all the champions are mentioned once with the exception of mipha there's no memories or divine beasts. the zora who had remembered link for 100 years had forgotten him since botw how is that possible. i had to make an ugly house near tarrey town to hang my weapons bc the hateno house was no longer mine 😭😭😭 somehow it made the game feel lonelier, even though botw was more empty there was much emotion in it.
it's not that i hated totk i liked exploring and finding new outfits, the dragons, rediscovering my favourite places etc but idk i was genuinely tearing up thinking about the champions being forgotten and all of link's previous sacrifices meaning nothing. sorry to send these random messages i don't follow anyone else who still blogs about zelda 😭😭
No, I know exactly what you mean! 😢 Honestly (lol can't remember if I've already said this before or not, so maybe I'm re-ranting here, but) my personal take is that totk shouldn't have been a sequel game, especially because Nintendo doesn't like to concern themselves with the continuity between games that a direct sequel like this just needs. With some tweaking/set up/rewriting, totk could have worked as a stand-alone story, and then they wouldn't have had to take away from what botw achieved in the name of making it more approachable to new players.
And yeah, I didn't hate it either! I liked the gameplay and the weapons system and the feeling of stakes whenever you entered a new town and saw how things had all gone to shit. Loved the wells. I just think it was too eager to pretend botw didn't exist while at the same time leaning on it so heavily that it would fall to pieces if you tried to extract the botw out of it :P
#I think there's something about how nintendo likes to connect the games via ''easter eggs'' rather than actual lore?#it's an idea i might poke at sometime#like#hey this spring is modeled after the skyward sword spring literally thousands of years ago!#how? don't worry about it :)#it's a callback#it's a surface-level connection#i guess the longer this series goes on for and the more crumbs of possibility they drop without actually giving you the cake#the more i start to wish for something more#especially when you see what other lower budget games can achieve these days#step it up i guess? i don't know :P#totk negative#lol sorry#the more time passes the more i have#frustrations

Because of The Stresses and Horrors I've the very specific brain thing where there is only one (or two) things I want to listen to, on repeat, every moment I'm conscious.
Unfortunately that thing is 2000s nu metal and/or club bangers (2000s defined roughly mid 90s to mid 2010s. It's a vibe not a strict definition of time).
Anyway. Humbling to be "oh this song! The new song from - nope, minimum 12 yr old song." Fml.
#club party party party party party#it does cheer me tf up rn tho#the nu metal is just straight up nostalgia#small town nz is a trip#i was obviously Absolutley Not Allowed music like this#but ummm thats what the battery compartments on stereos are for#cassette tapes of music from ur mates#and later lots of “blank” burned cds#😊 aint no rescourceful like a homeschooled teen on a budget resourceful#i used felt tip as eyeliner for i wannt to say years?? before having the actual stuff#black lower lash eyeliner 5eva

The emoji is suspicious right? Right?!??
#the radiant emperor#she who became the sun#if the emoji wasnt there id assume wishful thinking but this post is implying SOMETHING is in the works#I'm going to guess it's most likely either a podcast drama or a graphic novel since it'd probably have to be lower budget#and i don't think there are other mediums it could be easily adapted to#i can still hope!#if theres an adaptation tho im a bit scared of a new fan influx.#i am enjoying the nice calm adult energy and i would appreciate it if that remained

anyway, i mentioned it in the tags of one of my recent posts, but i've been playing expeditions rome recently and i don't know how this escaped my radar when it released???
it's essentially a crpg (with some somewhat basic tactical gameplay btwn armies) that starts at the beginning of the third mithridatic war (80s BC) and you play as a roman noble who's escaped the city after their father was murdered and their sister married off to his murderers. you leave for the frontlines of the war, where your father's friend and current consul, lucullus, commands the legions and you fight alongside them. and you can play as a woman, with the baggage that entails, which is surprisingly satisfying (at least for me).
oh, and one of your friends is julius caesar.
i'm currently a bit into act 2 of 3, which messes with history a bit so you can deal with cleopatra's conflict with her brother, and i really just love it so far. the romances are a bit interesting, since part of them is based on random events while travelling on the world map with your party.
your companions are all really fun to play with their backstories exploring various bits of roman/mediterranean society and the game isn't shackled to the protagonist for companion quests, which can lead to some fascinating bits that the player knows about the companions that the protagonist doesn't know yet (hi, calida).
i'm a bit reluctant to talk about historical accuracy as i'm a medievalist and the whole concept of "historical accuracy" is generally considered a bit nonsensical amongst historians studying pop culture depictions of history. especially since there's no one true vision of any historical society.
but usually when devs claim their game is historically accurate, they mean visually/archaeologically accurate. expeditions rome does do a lot of that, sure, but the fascination with the actual societies the devs are depicting bleeds through so well. is it accurate, per se? nah, every historically-inspired game has to choose its priorities with its source material, and this one chose to (rightly) prioritise letting you play as a woman over forcing you fully into roman gender roles.
your more traditionalist companions even discuss it - your enslaved mentor, syneros, says he doesn't really view you as a woman when you question his view of women as inherently deceptive, and caeso lightly implies that he thinks your father was deeply eccentric (at best) for training you in combat, as much as he's otherwise unquestionably loyal to you to the point of basically acting as your closest advisor along with syneros.
but even then, a female protag isn't treated as an equal by her peers back in rome (you can't gain political office like a male protag), which creates a delightful sense of claustrophobia whenever you return to rome - and this isn't just for your character, but your other female roman companion (hi again, calida) has a plotline that does even more to reinforce that atmosphere. your female companions even have a markedly different response to your choice to romance caeso than syneros (i've had no reaction from bestia about it so far, alas), because romance is a dangerous choice for an otherwise independent woman in roman society, even a patrician. i've heard you can do a lot later in the game to respond to rome's patriarchy, so i'm really curious to see how that pans out.
and to top it all off, there's a free demo which has about 2/3s of act 1, though the build is a bit outdated gameplay-wise compared to the updates in the main game since.
#expeditions rome#video games#also i now love caesar's mum she's so cool when you meet her as a female protag#his uncle is just fuming in the background while she's remarkably chill about literally everything about you and it's just delightful#mind you it's a solidly aa game - think like owlcat's budget or perhaps a touch lower#but either way i'm just really delighted by this game so far even if some fights have one helluva difficulty spike even on normal

the best thing for an artist who works mainly in local theatre to hear
'I'm in a position to pay you what your labor is worth'
#shoutout to my friend who commissioned me for this mask project#he asked abt labor costs and i was like 'oh dude i know budgeting for theatre is usually tight. it's super negotiable lmk what you can do'#and that was his response#i still went a little sparing on the estimate (it works out to 25 an hour which is maybe a little low for high-skill maskmaking)#and i'm willing to go lower if he needs to but still. waiting to hear back from him but i'm very encouraged

We talk a lot about tumblr politics but reddit politics is also fascinating. On the front page of the website there's regularly posts from r/antiwork from 14 year olds who think their mom asking them to do the dishes is bourgeois oppression, and posts from r/fluentinfinance from 14 year olds who wonder why poor people are too lazy to ask their dad for a better job
#ramblings#nonsims#r/fluentinfinance is unequivocally the worse one because it's populated by people who think that you can budget your way out of poverty#Like girlie no this economic system requires there's an underclass#These are systemic issues that cannot be solved by individual good spending habits#If everyone in the lower classes just magically became a financial genius there'd still be an underclass#at least antiwork has some understanding of systemic issues even if simplistic

can't believe I ended up under a roof for both of my shows 🥲 rip eras tour fireworks I'm sure you were very pretty but I will never know
#i knew our liverpool ones were in a roofed part of the stadium but they were our nosebleed 'we have some budget left' ones#but for wembley i was expecting the true lower bowl experience and we got stuck under another damn roof 🥲#the actual view of the stage was decent enough and we were looking more straight on at it compared to just looking down#but the roof really ruins the vibe you kind of feel like you're watching through a window#and the HEAT there was just so little airflow#i couldn't believe when we went down the steps to leave how the moment you were out from the roof the whole atmosphere changed#suddenly you were fully immersed in the stadium and under the sky and there was a cool breeze 🥲🥲 oh well#i know i was lucky to get tickets at all!! just a shame when these were 2x the price of any other tickets I've ever bought#on the plus side being back row meant no one screaming in your ear behind you lol#talking#taylor swift

i was going to make a post telling yall to stop calling godzilla minus one a low-budget film (because it isn't) but then i remembered disney regularly drops 12 million for ONE EPISODE of their shows without nearly the same cultural impact so. yeah godzilla is low-budget as far as i'm concerned idc
#uhhhh me#film budget is such an interesting thing to think abt#for those curious: godzilla had a budget of 10 million#which seems like a lot until you compare it to an average hollywood action movie which is like. 100 million easy#incidentally that is oppenheimer's budget!#so seeing that you go wow! why the discrepency?#as far as i can figure. american movies go for the big mass appeal so they'll out more money into international releases etc#whereas japanese films only rly care about domestic release so they save a stupid amount of money there#(i'm sure there's more to this and i have my theories but i don't have hard data rn to back it up so i won't say it)#so anyway. 10 mil is a very modest budget by hollywood standards but by japan standards it's above average actually#oh yeah the other thing about budgets i always come back to#is the fact the percy jackson show had 12 million per episode#but did not look or feel nearly as good as shadow and bone which had average 4 mil per episode. literally a third what percy had#the allegiant movie had an estimated ~120 mill budget and somehow was worse in every single way than the scorch trials movie#which had 61 mil. HALF what allegiant had and yet literally everything about it was more pleasing#one of my fave sci-fi films prospect has less than 4 mil budget and yes you could tell the cgi was unreal sometimes#it was done in a way that looked artistic instead of cheap and glossy#and i would watch that over whatever new movie the mcu pops out with like. 200 mil budget that somehow looks uglier-#-than a movie on 4 mil#oh my god what in the fucking world. antman 3 had 300 million. whomst.#and the movie didn't even look good? the audacity#7 times prospect's budget and looks like shit#anyway. budget is a weird thing#it rly comes down to who's handling the project and how smartly they use that money#oh ya the other thing i was gonna say is i do think there's a difference between 'low budget film' and 'film with a lower budget'#i think godzilla is a lower budget film (comparatively to hollywood) but not a low budget film. if you catch my drift.
