MY DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS THREAD

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince is the first DQM game I've ever gotten to play after admiring the series since childhood. The bad news is that it leaves out exactly the three DQ monsters I love most. The good news is that everything else about it is great. I've been taking regular screenshots as I play and I am going to start adding things about it to this post, so it is going to get long. First of all here are exactly my next three favorite monsters in the franchise, which they fortunately did include, and were all available to me by almost the first area:

"Mad Mollusk" or in other dq games "taileater" is great because it has a sad flabby slug face at one end and a fanged leech mouth at the other end. When it uses magic, it reveals giant eyeballs in its antennae somehow?! Love how big the "carnivorous" mouth gets in the attack animation. What a stretchy guy!

"Lunatick" is just called "meda" (eye) in Japanese, I'm glad they decided it was like a parasite thing in the localization.

Finally there's DROHL, a classic DQ enemy that looks like...well I'm not gonna say what it really looks like but I think it's a cool little freak unrelated to that and I think it talks exactly like Droopy dog. Oddly it's known as a "Drohl DRONE," and I believe there are other "castes" in other DQ games, but only the "drones" are in this one sadly. I've yet to find this in the wild; I got it through the breeding system!

....Which is by far the most addicting thing about this game. The actual gameplay is good solid turn based RPG stuff, if a bit basic, but every monster can be bred with another monster to unlock a slew of other species. This is one of the first games in which they actually call it a "fusion" system now, I guess dropping the word "breed" from the English localization, but all other in-game dialog still calls these the 'parents' and 'offspring' and even makes jokes that they're getting married, so yeah, it's still breeding. What happens when you breed a slime with someone's dead grandpa??

.....There are multiple monsters you can get from that, but one of them, and the one that makes the most sense, is Slimeshroom! This is a new DQ slime that's some fungus! What's also fun is that every monster has up to three skills, and each skill actually unlocks a ton of spells, attacks, boosts and effects as you spend skill points on them. Then when you breed two monsters, you can give the baby any three skills from the parents. Any at all! I used this to make my Slimeshroom both a healer and a fire mage in the early game. This catches you up with the same progress I talked about when I first got the game almost two months ago so here's some things that have happened since:

I bred a flying cat and a vampire chinchilla to get a.....sexy bat??

I helped a fat rat - that's the name of his species - rescue his son

I bred a people ghost with a lamp ghost to get a bag of dirt!

I fought this bastard giraffe man who called an elderly wizard a "naughty boy" and put him in candy jail.

"Duffer" from the Giraffe quest is also best friends with Eileen the eye demon, and when you rescue him, they become your loyal subjects! BAD NEWS: this entire game is actually a prequel to Dragon Quest 4, and the player character of this game is the villain of Dragon Quest 4. Duffer and Eileen are also in Dragon Quest 4. They die :( .......Maybe this game gives you a chance to fix that future??? I don't know.

Can u review hydrapple

Hydrapple is certainly a strange one. Not because of the design or anything—the design's quite good—but it's such a weird addition to the Applin line. Why take a branching two-stage Pokemon and suddenly introduce a three-stage branch? Hydrapple instantly outclasses both Flapple and Appletun both because it evolved twice and for stat-related reasons.

I point this out because all of this could've easily been fixed by just... making Dipplin a regional? Dipplin really does not look that different than Applin; it just has syrup and a long horn. It being a regional would make sense thematically (it's a candy apple, a popular treat in Japan which fits with Kitakami's setting) and it would fix the imbalance issue—in most regions, Applin can evolve into Flapple or Appletun, but Kitakami Applin always evolve only into Dipplin and then Hydrapple.

Anyway, all of that technical stuff aside, I do really like Hydrapple. It's probably one my favorite designs out of the DLC, and it has both a solid concept and good aesthetics.

Thematically, Dipplin was already established to have two wyrms living together, so it only makes sense that it would evolve into what's effectively a seven-headed hydra (or Yamata no Orochi, judging by its Japanese name). This fits with the line's dragon typing and is a neat direction that's distinct from the other evos. The wyrms are also referred to as syrpents, which I think is delightful.

And visually, it's also pretty strong. Instead of having all the heads visible at once, six of them are kept tucked inside of the apple with only their eyes showing, and only four of them pop out during animations. This keeps the design from being too busy.

I also like how the main head that's visible at all times has a nice little identifier in terms of the mini apple and stem-like horn, which kind of feels like it continues from Dipplin's. The long necks are great and look a lot different from either Applin or Flapple, and I like the scalloped underbelly patterning as well. The apple itself also looks good, with some gooey drips on top and some more scalloped patterns to indicate further drippy-ness. And color-wise, the bright red pops out and compliments the duller greens nicely. Good stuff.

Anyway, overall, a really good design and concept here, and a welcome addition to the Applin line... if you can get over the weirdness of it just being a three-stage evolution, of course.

Ichiji being "secretly a thug"

Even though he acts the most emotionless and really stiff, I get the impression Ichiji is kind of meant to be that trope of someone who looks like a statue and super elite normally but when nobody's looking they're either the biggest slob or just a gangster.

Look at the boys' clothes:

Yonji and Niji wear their shirts tucked in with belts like nerds. Ichiji doesn't.

Same thing with their "party clothes". Niji and Yonji wears fancy formal stuff like Judge, Ichiji kind of looks like he just rolled out of bed and put on a cloak on top. And plus his tattoo??? Tattoos are typically seen as "rebellious".

Well. Credits to @sangerie for mentioning that Ichiji looks absolutely pissed when they got stuck in the candy and he was berating Judge for looking really lame when they were at gunpoint. This prompted me to check the raws again, and... yeah, he absolutely broke character and his thug came out.

So I once mentioned that the way you can tell Ichiji's the one talking is because he's the only one with more polite speech, while Niji and Yonji talks more casually. In this one scene, he "broke" and talks thug.

The parts I marked in the speech bubbles are typical identifiers marking informal or crude speech.

The one marked in red is the ending particle -ze, usually used for emphasis. -ze is considered rough and almost rude, and based on what I saw among Japanese fans, this is usually associated with Niji (who most agrees talks like a thug a lot).

The fan translation got this slightly better, as they had translated that as "you look pathetic". 見苦しい is "unsightly". Added with the -ze ending, yes, translated as "you look pathetic" is appropriate.

The part marked in blue, that says "we're stuck in candy". He says "stuck" with gachi gachi ガチガチ. This is a "sound effect" of something freezing (or "turning solid" in general). Describing things with sound effects is also informal speech.

The one marked in green, translated as "there's no hope for us" (the original phrasing is "absolutely can't be saved"). Here he's saying "can't be saved" as tasukaranee 助からねェ. The formal form should have been tasukaraNAI 助からない. Ichiji doesn't usually use the rougher sounding -nee ending.

Example Yonji using -nee (green), and also Niji using the -ze (blue):

Ichiji don't normally do that.

Edit: I cannot 100% confirm for sure that it was Ichiji talking in this drinking scene, so I will not present it as "proof".

Also, I know I'm always saying I try to be careful not to jump the gun when it comes to visuals, but Ichiji's face here does not look like a smile. That's a sneer. A smirk, at best. Coupled with how he talks in a way that's completely "breaking character", he appears to be so angry that he's just not even bothering to hide is inner thug.

We did see that he seems pretty temperamental as a kid. He's probably putting up the polite act as "the crown prince", and his "true nature" is actually the gangster one.

✸ ꒰ morning routine ꒱⋆ ࣪.* ࣪.⋆ 

🌅 First things first, Sana usually wakes up super early in the morning to go to work! try to always wake up at 8am at least, this logically gives you more time to do stuff and be extra productive!

Now, head to your kitchen to get a glass of water (or you can leave one in your room the night before) and drink it so you can fully wake up.

🏝 Then, it's time to get ready! Sana has a cute mix of comfy and feminine style, so feel free to copy her outfits for casual days. She then does her makeup, she usually does a cute and sexy style, using techniques to soften her bone structure, remember to always research which makeup techniques are the best for your face shape and features. Lastly, do your hair, Sana sometimes does an updo hairstyle, but she just leaves it down most of the time. Also, remember to pack a lip gloss so you can retouch your lips anywhere.

Study in your dead time, like when you're on your way to school! This will ease the weight of work later and make you have things fresh in your memory.

🗿 Yes, Sana has the prettiest, cutest handwriting in all Japanese, English and Korean. You can try and practice your handwriting while studying so you can memorize everything while making pretty and organized notes.

Sana says that while studying on where you are doing your exams you should have 3 candies with you (if you're allowed to eat in class), this will wake you up and give you more energy!

✸ ꒰ workout routine ꒱⋆ ࣪.* ࣪.⋆ 

🏄🏼‍♀️ First, Sana spends most of her time dancing to powerful and energetic choreographies for all Twice songs, keep that in mind and try to learn to dance to any rhythm of your liking. 

Second, for her workout routine, opt for a cardio or full body toning workout, try to emphasize on toning your legs from time to time. And add a yoga or stretching season after you're done with your routine!

🍹 Sana likes to have a bowl of yummy raspberries after she’s done with work, you can have any fruit as a reward snack!

✸ ꒰ shower and self care routine ꒱⋆ ࣪.* ࣪.⋆ 

Before showering, play some music and wash your hands so you can wash both your face and body with clean hands.

🍧 After showering, apply serum, night cream and night eye cream on your face and take a massager to massage your face and neck! 

Sana has two products she uses the most, those are lip balm and hand cream! It's best to apply lip balm and hand cream after you get out of the shower to lock in extra moisture, just let your hands dry before doing it.

🥥 For self care you can try to have a penpal or write letters to your friends as a gift. If you don't feel like it, try to write a letter for your future self to read in the future, you can get inspiration on Pinterest!

Time for dinner! Sana always has a really full dinner usually consisting of spicy food.

🌊 Now, it's time to relax and check your phone or social media for a little, you can also watch movies while laying in bed.

Before going to bed, sana stretches every night with momo, do this stretching routine to completely relax your body before sleeping!

🌷 Finally, use some hair ties and clips to get your hair out of your face, if either your face or hair are greasy it can clog your pores and cause pimples around your hairline or forehead, so it's better to prevent anything.

For modern AU, what do you think that the misfits would like food-wise?

Fantastic question! Let’s see:

Lenore: Girl loves protein!! Anything with chicken, steak, you name it. And of course, venison. I don’t think she’s a picky eater, loves a good full plate with varied stuff on it. Loves a big burger on occasion. She has a little bit of a refined palette due to her upbringing but she ends up being a gigantic fan of like food truck style food

Duke: Stereotype to a T. Claims the French do pastries better, but America’s better at everything else. He likes having light breakfasts, think like fruit bowls or toast. Only really has snacks when in front of the TV. He’s also the type to make ramen and put a ton of extra shit in it like onion powder or cheese or egg

Pluto: Literally whatever he can find. He has a preference for fried foods. Will eat a salad if it has breaded fish or chicken in it. LOOOVES sea food. He will order like a salmon somewhere and Duke just starts fucking meowing at him. he’s a stupid cat. Didn’t ever have sushi until Eulalie taught him all he needs to know. Now that’s ALL he orders whenever they get Japanese take out.

Morella: Hearty, filling meals that can easily be shared. Broths, soups, things like that. She loves veggies especially when they’re roasted or steamed. Also loves when a bunch of things are mixed together stir fry style. She’s a huge fan of trying different cheeses when she makes sandwiches to try different flavor combos.

Berenice: Is the type of person to see ‘candied crickets’ on sale, buy them, and then crunch on them loudly. Will try the craziest shit for the hell of it. Has a surprisingly refined palette, also a seafood lover. She loves trying new things and mixing things. Like she would get a burger and put peanut butter on the inside of the bun just to see what it tastes like. Just because she can. Huge fan of gummy worms, and her favorite pastries are always anything cherry flavored.

Eulalie: Is also willing to try weird things. Will share the crickets with Berenice. She loves eating traditional foods that remind her of Japan, especially to judge how close they taste to the real deal. Huge fan of pastas and parmigianas. She’s trying to make sushi pasta a thing but nobody’s down for it.

Also Morella totally tries to host potlucks at her house because that’s her favorite thing in the whole world. She even gets Annabel’s group to come and it’s one big happy not drama filled time!!

-Leo was placed as the role model by master splinter since day one, tho his father never really meant any kind of harm to Leo, this costed him his stability WAY TOO MUCH, Leo is NOT a born leader..tho he was (unintentionally) tricked into believing that he is one. Any time he would fail to lead or help his brothers he’d be too hard on himself, asking why couldn’t he just be the perfect leader he was supposed to be! The one he always wanted to be..and ended up finding comfort in Tv shows and cartoons, which began his love for Space Heroes ^_^!

As time went on, Leo realized that trying to be something he wasn’t was really just taking a toll on him..to which he decided to split the leader title between his siblings, Leo would be the front man, and whenever he had no plans,one of his brothers would take on the leader title and get all of them out of a situation together..Nowadays Leo is still learning to be a good leader by himself , tho taking his time and actually enjoy what being a leader is.

LIKES !! : cartoons, old animes or indie films, traditional Japanese culture, SPACE HEROES, Space!, his brothers ^_^!

DISLIKES : having too many pressure on him, loud noises, spicy food..

FUN FACTS BOUT LEO !!!

Leo likes to use traditional Japanese clothing, mostly cuz he thinks it’s really cool, plus Splinter wears it too..so..yeah
