Hiya! I've come with that au I was talking about!
So, this takes place after the failed extermination. I'm not sure how long, but let's say 10 years. đ¤ˇ
(This is a memory loss thing, but they work on getting it back đ)
So, for years, Charlie has heard rumors of a huge, lush forest appearing somewhere on the outskirts of the Pride Ring. It's nearly impossible for sinners to go there.
But Charlie is able to venture out, so she decides to take a look. A d what she finds is unlike anything she could have even imagined. It was like a forest from Earth had appeared. Everything was lush and thick and perfect.
She felt so at peace here but also uneasy. How did it get there? How long has it been there?
She tells her father about it, and he's also curious and decides to head out.
What he finds. Is Eden.
Not the same Edenz because how is that possible? But it's as gorgeous as Eden. He can't help but think of the memories from that time in his life. Meeting his wife, betraying Heaven, tainting humanity.
Adam.
He doesn't think about Adam for too long. He gets too mad. Stupid fucker wasted his life being angry and bitter instead of actually living it. Lucifer tried to save him from Heaven a long time ago. But that didn't go well.
Lucifer walked through the forest. Charlie was right. It was so lush.
In the distance, a large tree with purple flowers could be seen over the top of the rest of the trees. Lucifer instantly recognized it as a wisteria. It was a rare tree in Eden, but it was beautiful. The way its flowers hung down, the different shades of purple. Everything.
Lucifer flew to the tree, stopping on the shore of a small lake. The giant wisteria creates a kind of border around it.
But Lucifer was drawn to something else. A large statue sat in the middle of the lake. It was facing away from him. It was huge, at least 10-11" feet tall. It had what looked like long hair. And huge bat like wings that reached the sky, towering over everything, especially Lucifer.
Lucifer was so curious about this statue that he stepped into the lake and walked towards it. Surprisingly, what he thought was a lake was just a giant puddle. The water barely reached the top of his heels.
Purple petals and water plants littered the water. Everything about this was ethereal. Even the statue had purple flowers on it.
Getting closer to the statue, he walked in front of it. He couldn't see half of its face because of the hair and the way its arms were positioned. But Lucifer could see its eyes. They looked pained and distant.
He was completely captured by the beauty of the state. He had no idea it was possible to capture such beauty in stone.
Lucifer saw something sharp and golden sticking out of the ground in front of the statue. It shined so nicely in Hells sun.
Reaching down to touch it, Lucifer pulled his hand back as it burned him when he tapped it with his finger.
He watched as a lightning bolt of gold shot through the statue and out of its chest.
Lucifer watched it for a moment. Oops. He really didn't mean to break the statue.
But when nothing happened, Lucifer stood and decided to continue exploring. He's done enough damage to this place.
Lucifer stopped as he heard the statue crack and break. He didn't dare to look back until the sound stopped. Shit. He's really done it now.
Slowly turning, his eyes widened. Sitting and swaying in the large puddle was a man. His large, bat wings splayed out behind him. His brown hair flowed down his body into the water.
Lucifer watched the man for a moment. But his breath caught in his throat when the man's eyes landed on him. They were pure gold.
This guy looked like Adam, kinda. Lucifer never thought Adam was this good-looking, but then, he was bashing his face in. But in Eden, Adam was flawless, just like Lilith.
Man: where...?
Lucifer: You're in my Ring, bud. I've never seen this place before, but you're definitely in Pride. In Hell.
Man: Hell...? Never... heard of it
Fuck,he sounded like Adam.
Lucifer: Right... you were kind of a statue for a bit there... so uh- you have a name or anything?
The man stopped looking around, and let his eyes lock onto Lucifers.
Adam: ...Adam... I think
Lucifer stared.
Oh shit.
That's the good shit right there!!!
And feeling guilty Lucifer takes him in and tries to help him and finds his feelings along the way.
Love it!!
-
Lucifer: A-Adam?
Adam: .... Yes, that feels right
Shit, what the fuck was this? He thought that Adam died fully when he got stabbed. But he became......... This.
Lucifer: Okay, do you know who I am?
Adam: ..... No.
Great. Just great he had no memory of-.......
Adam had no memory. Which means he doesn't hate Lucifer anymore. Maybe this was a blessing in disguise so that he could have him back....
Lucifer: Well Adam, my name is Lucifer. I'm the King of Hell, which means I rule over this land.
Adam nodded, he didn't see anything wrong with this guy. He was small but he oozed power and that was enough to keep him from trying anything stupid.

đ. DIARY ENTRY 11︴MAY 31, 2024
hey yall, hereâs a diary entry I forgot to postđđ itâs a bit unorganized and I switch povs at some parts?? Like I go from writing in my little tumblr diary and using I, me, my and then I somehow forgot all that and started yelling at my future self đđđ enjoy and just, reader beware, I didnât reread this so if this is completely incomprehensible my bad đ¤ˇââď¸
dear loass diaryâŚ
okay first, from now on, Iâm only going to use the term âreal worldâ in reference to imagination. I feel like for me, that term is too synonymous with the 3D, and thatâs just stupid because the 3D isnât even the real world. I mean, ig itâs because so many ppl talk about growing up and going into the âreal worldâ or how ppl talk about how the âreal worldâ is a cruel place and all that so ig thatâs where the association comes from but no more!!
i have a horrible habit of doing this, when things start to get a bit tough and Iâm in a stressful situation, at first I think âitâs okay I have xyz already solved and taken care of in imagination!!â but naturally, tough times bring out the most desperate parts of ourselves and that desperation leads me to brush off my imagination and think âokay but thatâs not actually my real life.â which, I donât even think I have to explain how bad that is. hard times help us see our true emotions and feelings so that just shows that I only identify with imagination when things are easy. itâs like I think that imagination can fail me, that itâs possible that trusting it was the wrong choice. because thatâs what this is really all about, I canât identify with it because Iâm scared to trust it. part of me fears that if I turn my back on the 3D, imagination may not reward me and my life will be an even bigger mess because I neglected it for the 4D. but that canât happen unless I let it. manifestation doesnât require a back up plan, itâs the solution. the law of assumption is a literal law, no one and nothing is an exception. that makes failure impossible (which ig means fearing failure is kinda silly now that I think about it). and even if Iâm not entirely certain or still a bit scared, today Iâve realized that I finally want to put a stop to not identifying with imagination. I really wanna give my all to imagination. Iâm so sick of identifying with the 3D and Iâm finally ready to acknowledge how truly stupid that is. I wanna be faced with adversity and still know and love the fact that everything is done in imagination. I want to actually view myself as my desired self. I want to view every aspect of my life as the way it is in imagination. whenever I think of anything, I want the version of it in imagination to be the first thing Iâm reminded of. itâs okay to identify with imagination, itâs okay to accept that itâs the real world, itâs okay if the 3D is an absolute disaster and you still trust imagination. putting so much faith in imagination is going to be scary because look at the world we were raised in, the law of assumption goes against all of it. itâs only natural to be uncertain at first but taking the leap of faith requires bravery, be brave by trusting and identifying imagination.
kisses, Tiffany

Okok. I think I can explain how I feel. So like picture u find what u really actually like to do, the thing that feels like work in the sense that itâs hard but rewarding and adds positivity to society. Then ok u spend a lot of time doing that thing, weâll u sorta had to to understand that this is the thing you feel like u should be doing.. So for me this is studio music, like making music in my house and putting it online. Sewwww I see a lot of ppl doing this as well right, the ones I see are usually successful (cuz u donât see the ones that arenât). But like u know itâs possible some ppl get to have an audience that finds them where they like the music, maybe the artist lives off of that but idk how that would happen. Regardless there are ppl who technically do that, tho I guess that involves live shows maybe. So for me Iâm constantly in the state of, I found the thing I want to do but Iâm dogshit at it. But itâs not like I want to be super proficient at an instrument, or write impossible progressive music, or like idk my goals arenât that grand at all. I kinda make what I want to make for the most part, maybe I master things slightly shittily, my side point is that loss of ppl make things happen while having the skills and tools adjacent to what I think I have. So idk if thatâs the problem. More just like for whatever reason nobody notices me. BUT BUT BUT ok I super hate having to pretend Iâm a big deal though. I use to do that when I was in survival mode and I fucking haaaate looking back on my outward facing attitude at that time. Itâs not even that bad but itâs just so cringe. In reality Iâm not intelligent Iâm not THAT cool and I donât think highly of myself, I guess for the reasons of failing so much. I do not want to be self promotional like I think Iâm a big deal, because Iâm not and thatâs embarrassing, Iâm literally just doing my useless skill. Same w visual art, absolutely useless, such a bullshit skill that I have. But if I make something nice that goes on someoneâs wall then thatâs epic. But sometimes I donât want to make a nice thing, sometimes what needs to come out it horrible, cuz thatâs how I feel I donât feel good. Because this isnât a good time, usually Iâm not doing what I want to do succesfully. Ok so u find ur thing u should do, u try and try and try, every thing u make ur proud of, then after u make it u think all ur past things are silly and failures, and ur new thing will be different. Or u just resign ur new thing to being bad and that no one will see it and thatâs fine. And thatâs where im at. Im at, im bad at what I do creatively, and when I do do it im doing it for only me. Which is fine. But I barely get to do it from how tired I am from working and other commitments I have in life. BUT THE THING IS MY ACTUAL PURPOSE. So I spend all my time not doing the thing I should be doing and regardless of if thatâs an untruth it feels true to me so itâs bad mentally. Either I completely let go of anything creative and I was never an artist forget about it I donât even know how to do any of that, or I get this mental torture all the time. And I canât forget, Iâve done it too long to forget. And thereâs no way I can like âlive my dreamâ thatâs simply not going to happen. Bro I cannot believe how delusional I was in the past like fake it till u make it steeze.. I just canât remotely look back at it cuz Iâm like oh god did I actually believe I was good. But I had to!!!! I didnât have any other options like I had to try it. Itâs just so embarrassing. Like baseline Iâm so average, even if I try to make sure Iâm original Iâm somehow not, like thereâs just no way to be actually good. Or thatâs not accessible to me. And having no art or music âcareerâ lol that definitely makes it all worse. Like I canât help but put all my time in because itâs my thing. But even when Iâm trying my absolute best it doesnât find ppl or thereâs no audience or whatever. And thatâs kind of on me, like most of that is probably my fault and the quality of what Iâm making

Imagine the Ember Island Players creating a romance between you and Zuko which hits a little too close to home
You sat beside Katara and noticed how Zuko sat on the other side of her. Aang faltered, obviously wanting to sit there and you smirked as Zuko obliviously missed Aangâs look. Zuko had been with the group a few weeks now but his social skills still werenât very good and you found it made for some very interesting interactions. His attempt at telling jokes alone made you smile every time you saw him for a full week afterwards and you found Zuko did a lot of things that amused you but apparently not so much the others. âI was going to sit thereâ Aang whined and Zuko shrugged âso? Just sit next to meâ. Aang pouted and you laughed to yourself âhereâ you said standing up âtake my seat Aangâ and you moved so he could sit beside Katara. Katara was oblivious and you sat on the other side of Zuko chuckling at Aangâs blush. âWhat was that all about?â Zuko asked and you smiled âow nothing you just almost ruined Aangâs eveningâ. Zuko frowned and went to ask what you meant when the lights dimmed so you knocked his arm shaking your head âiâll tell you later now shhhâ. Zuko folded his arm huffily but stopped talking. The play was wonderfully awful. As you hadnât joined the gang straight away you knew you had time to just enjoy the first few acts and make fun of the way they portrayed all your friends. Plus what could they do to your character? You didnât have any old flames like Katara or Sokka and you didnât have an emotional backstory like Zuko or Aang. So you relaxed arms spread over the back of the bench and waited for *yourself* to make an appearance.
The second your actress walked on stage you knew it wouldnât be good. They had your character all wrong! Your actress flirted with everyone and acted like a lovesick idiot. You didnât think it could get much worse and then your character met Zukoâs.
âIâll save you from the piratesâ Zukoâs character purred to yours and you spluttered. âThat...that wasnât even me! That was Katara!â you whispered angrily. You looked to Zuko for confirmation who nodded âyeah I didnât say that to you...and I certainly didnât tie you up while staring at you like thatâ. âAnd I did not flirt with you like that eitherâ. You both glared as your characters bonded and they actually invented Zuko letting you go voluntarily. As Zukoâs character stared off into the distance and said your name you heard Sokka and Suki wheezing from laughter while you simmered with anger and embarrassment. âI didnât do that!â Zuko cried and you saw he was blushing vividly. That made you blush too and crossed your arms tightly âthey better not stick with this themeâ.
Of course they did. By the time act 3 had ended you and Zuko were living a star crossed lovers lifestyle in Ba Sing Sei. They again got you mixed up with Katara and said Azula kidnapped you to lure Zuko to the Earth Kingâs palace. The act ended with Zuko charging in to save you, offering his own life in exchange for yours, but Azula outmanoeuvred him and arrested him too. As the lights went up for intermission you and Zuko paused before exploding.
âThat never even happened!â.
âI knew he was in Ba Sing Sei but we never went on a dateâ.
âYeah that was a different girlâ.
âAnd you did not fight with Jet over meâ.
âI didnât even know you knew Jet!â Zuko agreed and you both paused for air.
The gang all looked at each other before bursting into laughter. âWhat is so funny?â you cried and Sokka smiled. âWe all know none of that stuff happened, we were there too remember?â. âYeah so...canât we rant?â you asked. âWell yeah but why get so mad about it? Are you trying to convince us or yourselves that the idea the two you flirted is so impossible?â. You and Zuko exploded again at the thought and Sokka and the others burst into laughter again. âAll iâm saying is this is a lot of emotion to come from nowhereâ Sokka smiled ânow iâm going backstage so yell at each other or somethingâ and he disappeared with Suki. Katara and Toph left for snacks and Aang went to the toilet leaving the two of you alone. âBut i mean it is ridiculousâ you muttered and Zuko nodded âutterly ridiculousâ. âSure we ended up together a few timesâ you shrugged âbut that was completely by chance, it wasnât like you were hyper-aware of me or vice versaâ. âYeah not at allâ Zuko agreed but he wasnât looking you in the eye for some reason. You stared at him confused and noticed his neck looked slightly red as if he was blushing. âWait did you?â you asked suddenly ânotice me more?â. Zuko looked up and he was indeed blushing deeply âwhat I....of course not! I never...I mean I did learn your name before anyone elseâs but thatâs because we spent that time together when I helped the pirates kidnap you and you wouldnât shut up the whole nightâ. âThen why are you blushing so much?â you asked and Zuko shrugged âI donât know I...itâs just them insinuating I like you. Iâve had it a lotâ. âYou have?â you asked amazed and Zuko nodded âwhen my uncle heard youâd seen me in Ba Sing Sei and that weâd reached a deal not to tell on one another he had this annoying smirk like iâd done it for any other reason besides the fact it was mutually beneficial. Then when I went back home Azula made it seem like me and you had a thing and Mai got jealous and started asking about you and I had to explain all our interactions and it was very awkward...she wanted me to reassure her by putting you down and making the idea seem impossible but I must have failed because she didnât believe me. So I guess thatâs why it makes me feel weird, everyone keeps telling me I act differently with you and I suppose I do but I have no idea if thatâs because everyone keeps saying it or if I always haveâ. You nodded your head but were unsure what to say. âWell which one do you think it is?â you asked eventually and Zuko paused âwhat?â. âIf you had to guess, would you say you act differently around me because of what people say about us or have you just always acted that wayâ. Zuko thought, staring at the ground and basically anywhere but at you, âiâm not sure but I guess maybe the second? They must have got it from somewhere I supposeâ. âThe second?â you asked surprised and Zukoâs blush returned vividly âIâm only guessing, I honestly donât knowâ. You nodded your head and went to speak when the others returned which stopped you right in your tracks. Â
The second half of the play began of course with you and Zuko reuniting in the prison under Ba Sing Sei. You and Zuko did end up there together but you definitely did less staring at one another. You rolled your eyes as your characters began to passionately speak to one another stepping closer and closer. They finally reached one another and you laughed when your character began yelling at Zukoâs. âHa maybe they got some things right!â you whispered to Zuko who nodded âyou did yell at me a lotâ. You smirked and went to apologise when Zukoâs character kissed yours. You and Zuko abruptly shot away from each other. âThat is not even close to what happened!â you cried at the others who were all laughing. Zuko nodded âthis is just slander! They didnât even bother to try to get our characters right and anyone with half a brain would realise that!â. Someone shushed Zuko and he glared âshush yourselfâ he cried before storming from the room. He didnât return for the rest of the play and honestly you thought that was probably wise. It got worse and worse. They still kept in Zukoâs betrayal of Iroh but changed it making you at the centre of Zukoâs struggle. He chose the crown and they made you react dramatically (even getting a love ballad moment). They then skipped forwards to Zuko at the palace, who got his own song when he realised heâd made the wrong choice. Your characters reunited not long after and promptly confessed their love for one another. Then you were both murdered by Ozai very much in line with the tragic forbidden lovers style.
âI mean Iâm just glad sheâs deadâ you shrugged on your way out âanything to end that romanceâ. The others smirked when Aang paused âdo you think Zuko went back home to the villa?â looking around for the angry fire prince. âNo he knows we donât know this place well, heâs probably just sat outside somewhereâ you replied looking around but you couldnât see him brooding anywhere either. When you walked out the front door and still didnât spot him Aang frowned âokay everyone split up and look for him, meet back here in five minutesâ.
You returned five minutes later to see Katara, Suki, Sokka and Toph all hadnât found him either. âI wonder where he isâ Katara frowned and you shrugged âheâll be fine, that boy has nine livesâ. âHe didnât in that playâ Toph commented and you nodded. âTrue but that play was a mess and thereâs one thing I still canât get over. Zuko said his family and friends thought he liked me thatâs where his side of this rumour started but in the play they acted like I encouraged him! Where on earth did they get that idea?â. The group all went quiet and you paused âwhat?â. âWell...I mean you kinda do encourage himâ Sokka frowned and your jaw dropped âI DO NOT! When have I ever...â. âWhen we got kidnapped by the pirates you teased Zuko constantly and refused to be quiet until he spoke to youâ Katara pointed out. âYes but that was to annoy him not flirt with him!â. âOkay how about when June asked if you were his girlfriend and you replied he wishes instead of no?â. âI was jokingâ you shrugged and Toph smirked âor how about when I was sneaking out to see Zuko at the Western Air Temple and found you already on your way to see him? What were you popping in to see Zuko for huh y/n? Nice date by the campfire?â. âI was doing the same thing as you! I was going to see if he would tell the truth and given that I knew him best I thought I....â. The gang all erupted and you paused âwhat?â. âYou know him best?â Sokka asked smirking and you nodded âthat doesnât mean anything itâs a factâ. âOw is it?â Sokka asked and you nodded âIt is! Fine if I donât know him best what was his fake name in Ba Sing Sei?â. Everyone went quiet and you nodded âor how about how long ago he was banished from the fire nation? Better yet just tell me his parentâs names!â you cried. When nobody replied you smirked folding your arms victoriously âtold you I know him bestâ. âYeah youâve definitely proved how much you know about Zukoâ Suki smirked looking past you. You frowned before you heard someone behind you. You turned to see Aang had found Zuko and by the look on his face heâd heard everything. You blushed and looked down âZuko we were...â. âHaving a competition to see who knows me best?â Zuko asked mildly amused and you paused âwell sort of...Sokka started itâ. âNo I didnâtâ Sokka retorted âyou declared you knew Zuko the best and when I asked if you were sure you started spouting your favourite facts about himâ. âTheyâre not my favourite facts about himâ you snapped and Sokkaâs smirk just grew âwhatever y/nâ and he turned leading the way home. The others all followed and purposefully made it so you and Zuko were at the back. âWhy were you talking about me anyway?â Zuko asked and you paused âow nothing I was just er...trying to work out why the Ember Island Players thought I had a thing for you but the gang was not helpfulâ. âThey couldnât think of a reason?â Zuko asked innocently and you frowned âno they could actually think of lots of reasons, it appears similar to your family they were also under the impression I held a flame for you as it wereâ. âOw really?â Zuko asked. He kept his voice flat but you could swear he was smirking slightly. âStop enjoying thisâ you whined pushing him âitâs not funny, itâs embarrassingâ. âLiking me is embarrassing?â Zuko asked and you paused âno I didnât mean that, I just meant having all your friends claim you like someone when you canât see itâ. âYou really canât see where theyâre coming from?â Zuko asked and you shook your head ânope not at allâ. Zuko looked away and you frowned âI saw that, what did that look mean?â. âNothing...â Zuko trailed off but you sighed grabbing him by the arm to make him look at you âIâm sick of everyone saying things about me for once just say it to my face!â. Zuko sighed âfine, I just think iâve been honest with you but youâre not being honest with yourselfâ. âNot being honest?â. Zuko nodded âYes, I admitted I could see where my family were coming from and how the rumours started but youâre acting as if they plucked them out of thin air!â. âWell maybe they did! I donât see how any of our interactions could be interpreted as romanticâ. Zuko didnât look convinced. âYou donât think thereâs some truth to what the Ember Island Players said? That maybe there is something here?â Zuko asked gesturing to the small gap between you. âNo of course not! Do you?â. âNoâ Zuko yelled back and you nodded âfine! You are the most infuriating...â you started when Zuko grabbed you kissing you. You initially tensed at the sensation but soon melted into it. Zuko seemed to be trying to prove a point by kissing you passionately and not wanting him to win you kissed him back matching his intensity. Finally Zuko pulled away for air and stared at you âstill not want to admit thereâs something here?â. You stared at Zuko torn between admitting he was right and your pride. You were annoyed, frustrated, excited and exhilarated all at once. You were breathing rapidly, your cheeks bright red as were Zukoâs and neither of you made to move away. âI...â you started eventually âthat was a good kissâ. Zuko nodded, his frustration melting away âit was, I enjoyed it...Iâve been wondering what it would feel like to kiss you for a while nowâ. âYou have?â you asked and Zuko nodded âas annoying as it is to admit my family and friends were right, I like you and I have for a whileâ. You smiled despite yourself at how adorable Zuko looked all bashful and embarrassed. âI tried ignoring it for a while but then when I joined the group your friends all saw it straight away. Then tonight...the play was bad but I was frustrated that everyone seemed to see it apart from you the person I actually wanted to see it...youâ. You looked down wondering how to reply âIâm sorry I bet that was really frustratingâ. Zuko nodded âIt was and I figured this was just one-sided but that...did you feel it too?â. Zuko looked so unsure and unlike himself it was endearing and gave you confidence. âYesâ you said shakily âafter that kiss I can tell you it is definitely not one-sided. I like you too Zuko and probably have since the startâ. âProbably?â Zuko asked and you sighed âIâm not good with my emotions, I can be oblivious to them so I canât with certainty tell you itâs been going on as long as the play made it out to be but I know I like you. Right now in this moment...I hope thatâs enough, I know itâs a shit confession and you probably wanted something more solid but I...â. Zuko began laughing and you paused âwhatâs so funny?â. âSomething more solid? Y/n Iâm on the run from the Firelord who is my father, my sister is hunting me to kill me and I could very likely be imprisoned for the rest of my life if Aang fails and thatâs if iâm lucky...Iâm not even sure if I have a future so trust me all I need is the present. To know in this moment right here you like me backâ Zuko blushed but he stepped closer and took your hands âthatâs more than enough for meâ. âIt is?â you asked and Zuko nodded âyes and if by some chance it becomes more long-term Iâll be very happy but for now I just want to enjoy this time with youâ. You smiled and leant in to kiss Zuko again when someone coughed. âHey what are you two doing?â Sokka called. Apparently the others had finally realised the two of you were no longer with the group and walked back to find the two of you as you currently were. Luckily it was dark so you moved away from Zuko but still held his hand. âYeah we thought youâd gotten lost are you okay?â Katara called. Zuko sighed and you smirked at his expression. âWeâre fineâ you smiled âwe were just talking and Zukoâs going to show me this beach he went to a lot as a kidâ. Zukoâs eyes shot up to yours and he smiled. âYou are?â Aang asked and Zuko nodded âyep, itâs not far from here so we wonât be long. You guys head back to the villa and weâll meet you thereâ and with that Zuko tugged you away from the others. You smiled at Zuko and he smiled back at you âquick thinking, I didnât think weâd get out of there so easilyâ. âYou can thank me laterâ you replied when you heard Sokka gasp âwait are they holding hands? Y/n are you holding hands?â. âRun!â Zuko cried and you laughed but did as he said. You kept running even after Sokkaâs voice trailed off and only stopped when you reached a sandy beach. You both collapsed on the ground and you turned to look at Zuko âdid you know this was here or did you get lucky?â. âTotally the formerâ he smiled and you shook your head âyouâre lucky I like youâ. âI really amâ Zuko agreed and he stared at your face tenderly. His fingers brushed your cheek and you smiled âwhat are you waiting for?â. âI have no ideaâ Zuko admitted and he leant in to reclaim the lost kiss from earlier. This time you werenât interrupted.

Hello! This is kind of a long request and well- Hopefully youâre fine with doing temporary Body Swap. :>
So basically Bakugou and his Male S/O are pro heroes and when out on a mission, they both get hit by a villain who has a swap quirk. Basically, they just swapped bodies. (Y/n is in Bakugouâs body and Bakugou is in Y/nâs body, they basically just switched minds.) They are told by the other pro heroes that the two should go home and take the day off. Unfortunately, nobody knows how long the quirk effect will stay, but they were convinced it was only temporary. So the two go back to their shared apartment and the day goes on pretty normal- besides the fact that, you know, theyâve swapped bodies. Though later Y/n gets a bit of an idea. What if he were to f*ck Bakugou in this body? The thought seemed kinda strange at first since he would literally be f*cking his own body, but he couldnât deny that the thought was turning him on. Especially wanting to see Bakugouâs reaction. So, he basically handcuffs Bakugou to prevent him from struggling and.. while in the middle of doing it, something happens.. Shit! Why did it have to happen now?? Y/n panics in his head as he realizes they just swapped bodies again, and he is now at the mercy of Bakugou Katsuki himself..
I actually sent a request kinda similar to this to someone else but it was a while ago and they havenât responded so they may not have liked it, or it just didnât arrive. And sorry for choosing Bakugou again, you just may be able to figure out who my favorite character is.. Sorry for my rambling.
If you donât wanna do it, thatâs fine. Anyways, have a good day/night, man!

_____
katsuki bakugou and y/n bakugou. the two of you have been married for 2 years now after you guys started working as heroes. you both went to UA and graduated at the top of the class. neither of you had time for love or romance resulting in neither of you confessing you feelings for each other. gladly, things managed to work out in the end.
"he's on it again, i need the bakugous here right now."
hearing the police force requesting your assistance, you and your husband show up on the case. it turned out to be the villain that the two of you couldn't capture the last time during patrol.Â
"HEH?! look y/n, it's this motherfucker again. what's up with this loser, coming back every time it's annoying."Â
"play nice now katsuki, let's just go and restrain him and let the police take care of the rest."
the two of you move quickly to match the villain's rapid movements. katsuki flew around using his quirk to attempt to catch him but failed. the villain was surprisingly agile and you guys had a tough time trying to chase him down.Â
after around half an hour of chasing you finally cornered the villain on top of a tall building in the middle of the city that was still in construction. the ground was hard to walk on and somewhat unstable but you managed to find your balance.Â
"alright, give it up, you've got nowhere to run now.Â
"what he said, stop resisting and i won't blow your face off."
the villain's expression turned to fear as you started to close up on him. out of panic, he used his quirk. it was a small beam that didn't hurt at all. however, after a few seconds your body started to heat up, you looked over to katsuki and you could tell he was feeling the same. what was happening?
seeing the two of you struggling, the villain quickly left the scene but he had trouble moving around due to his surroundings. his movements were also somewhat impaired due to fatigue. it was most likely the aftereffect of his quirk which was why he was pretty reluctant in using it.Â
the strange feeling in your chest wouldn't go away and your vision started to blur. next thing you know you woke up on top of the same building to see yourself lying next to you. was his quirk duplication? no it couldn't have been. you tried to stand up but felt the weight of some heavy armor dragging you down. you look down to see yourself wearing katsuki's hero costume and his gauntlet. still in awe, you heard a groan in your own voice next to you.Â
"shit⌠wtf happened, y/n where are you where-"Â
it didn't take long for your husband to find out what happened.Â
the two of you have switched bodies.
you both tried to explain to the police who's who but it only ended in confusion. you went home with your husband after they put the two of you on break for "damaged mental" from the villain because the majority of the police thought you guys were crazy.Â
there weren't any cases similar to body switching between heros before so the doctor said there's nothing that can be done other than attempting to wait off the effect. so there you were, in your husband's body, cooking dinner for the man while you saw your own body lazily sitting on the couch with your legs spread open watching the tv.Â
life went as normal for the next two days, since you two were both males there weren't any problems whatsoever. however, one day a thought flew into your mind while taking a nap with katsuki. since he was the one who would usually top, now that you're in his body wouldn't it technically mean you get to top?Â
physically you would be using your boyfriend's body to fuck yourself. but the thought of the all mighty bakugou katsuki taking his own dick, his bratty attitude, and lastly breaking him and making him fall apart by your touch aroused you in an indescribable way. you knew katsuki wouldn't agree to this due to his prideful personality so you had to take other measures to carry out your plan.Â
you and kastuki had all sorts of toys laying around and you decided to give him a taste of his own medicine with them. while he wasn't looking you grabbed the vibrator, handcuffs, and blindfolds and put them all on the nightstand. now that everything is in place, all you have to do is wait to catch katsuki off guard tonight when he gets tired.
later tonight, after finishing dinner, katsuki was yet again sitting casually again on the couch watching tv, not giving a single care to the world.Â
"heyy katsuki!"
"hm? yah?"Â
"come with me for a second? i want to show you something!" you said with a sly grin on your face
katsuki didn't care enough to talk back, neither did he think this could lead to the ill intentions you had with him tonight. following you into the bedroom, you gestured katsuki to sit down on the bed. he obeyed although he began to have a suspicion of what you're about to do. using your new body, you abused katsuki's strong muscle and speed to restrain your own body with the handcuffs you prepare. there was no way for katuski to fight back in this situation because your body was simply not built enough to resist his.Â
"h-huh? what are you doing dumbassâŚif you're joking s-stop it now, it's not funny."Â
"oh i am very serious katsuki, now that i'm inside your body. i am going to fuck your brains out. i'm gonna thrust that bratty attitude of yours right out the window."Â
hearing you say that, your husband looked away to avert his eyes while you heard a small gulp coming from his throat. you could tell he was nervous and that's exactly what you wanted. katsuki has never bottomed in his life before and he does plan on doing so either.Â
finally having katsuki in your grasp, you decided to carry on with your plan. you put on the blindfold for him as he jolted in surprise. katsuki tried to get out of the handcuffs but later found his attempt futile. these were the toys he used for you too and he out of everyone should know it's impossible to get out of them. once your husband stopped moving you gentlt took off his pants, leaving him exposed wearing only your boxers with an erection under it.
"aww katsuki~ already hard and i haven't even done anything yet, maybe you're better off being the bottom hm?" you teasedÂ
"s-shut up you shit head, just get on with it, whatever evil plan you have in store for tonightâŚ"
"no need to rush katsuki" you said as you entered his asshole with 2 of your fingers, loosening him up for the vibrator.Â
"we have the entire night."
you heard your own voice whimper as you explored more with your fingers. soon enough it was time to put the other toy in. your fingers left for a bit preparing the vibrator, leaving bakugou panting from the pleasure and clenching his hole around well, nothing. you turned on the vibrator and katsuki immediately noticed the familiar sound of what's in your hands.Â
"o-oi y/n, don't put it in here, i-i won't be able to take it."Â
"oh i'm sure you can~ you made me do it plenty of times, why can't the big and strong bakugou katsuki do it?"
without mercy, you put in the vibrator quickly and let the show play out. katsuki was moaning and groaning while you stroked your own cock enjoying the view. katuski's cock was bigger than yours and you weren't used to jacking off such a big dick but it was a nice first.
seeing a wet spot forming on katsuki's underwear, you knew he was ready to go. you took off katsuki's underwear to see the precum leaking from it, so much it looked like he was about to cum any second now. next, you took out the vibrator and started to spread some lube on your cock. you positioned yourself on top of the katsuki and teased his pink hole with your huge cock.Â
"what do good boys say katsuki~?"Â
"tch! i'm not saying it, y-you sadistic fuck."
you slapped katsuki's ass so loud that the neighbors probably could've heard you.
"i'm the one in control right now, you listen to what i say, understood?"
"f-fine, jesus christ! p-please y/n, put it inside meâŚ"Â
"that's a good boyâŚ"Â
after you fit ž of your cock in katsuki was already panting heavily trying to catch his breath. it reached his prostate you leaned down on his chest to bite on his nipples to make him feel even better. his hole clenched on your hole so tight you were barely able to move your cock around. you continued to make thrusts and sped them up each time.Â
during your thrusts you suddenly felt the weird feeling when fighting the villain again. both you and bakugou's body started to burn up but it wasn't as painful as it was last time. next thing you know everything was pitch black. you felt a piece of black cloth on top of your eyes and a familiar size inside your ass. it didn't take you long to realize that you and bakugou finally switched back.Â
you were glad to be back in your own body but why did it have to happen now?! out of all the times it could've happened this was no doubt the worst possible timing. you just teased the crap out of bakugou and now that he's in control again he can take his revenge right here, right now.
"oh? would you look at thatâŚour bodies switched backâŚ" you couldn't see katsuki say this but you could already tell the evil smile on his face.Â
"k-katsuki i'm sorry, i didn't mean to tease you that hard i was just trying to have some fun y-y'know." you desperately tried to explain.Â
"too late now baby boy⌠bad boys get punished for what they did. now⌠get ready, for the night of your fucking life."Â
regret, nothing but regret. bakugou was already an aggressive person when it comes to sex, now that you pissed him off even more you weren't prepared for what he was about to do to you.Â
without warning, katsuki pulled back his hips and thrusted into you harder than ever. you took his entire length right away and the full feeling in your ass was too overwhelming for you to handle. you started to blabber nonsense, unable to form words due to the pleasure.Â
"c'mon baby⌠gotta speak up if you want me to understand you." bakugou said knowing damn well you can't talk back.Â
incoherent moans and groans escaped from your mouth as you felt dry orgasms again and again from katsuki reaching your prostate. you were on the verge of passing out till you saw your husband's panting just as hard as you. you could tell he was very close as well. you tried your best to stay conscious and cum with your husbands.Â
katsuki let out a loud moan as he cummed inside you. you reached your orgasm too cumming all over yourself. katsuki licked up the cum on your stomach as you slipped into sweet unconsciousness. he gave you a warm smile and patted your head as he took you into his arms and fell asleep with you.Â

Let The Walls Break Down
Summary: Calum gets over his skepticism
Word Count: 2.7k
And away, and away we go!
__
âItâs almost impossible. Love sucks. Donât try it. Itâs a scam.â
That had been Calumâs general thoughts on relationships since the two of you called it quits. The âalmostâ bit was in admittance that 1.) your relationship had been amicable from start to finish, in fact the two of you were still close with each other, and 2.) he knew love worked for some people, however he didnât view himself as one of those some.
Being close to Calum post breakup meant you had a front row seat to the manâs brief stints at romance, which was a nice way of saying âendless stream of one night stands.â The flip side was he had a front row seat to your own count of nameless men. While in the beginning, the others in your friend group joked in hushed tones that it was an act on both your parts to stir up jealousy, the longer it went on without any animosity building up between you and Calum, the more the whispers died down until they disappeared all together. Because the simple truth was that the one night stands were just about sex. After all, you and Calum had learned together that the two of you were too busy for anything more than casual sex. A lesson both of you considered well-learned until Michael got engaged and flipped everything into a new perspective.
âItâs not that I donât believe in love,â you said after Crystal recounted all the details and you stopped squealing in excitement for her. âI mean, anyone who sees you and Michael has to believe itâs real.â
âAw, Y/N,â Crystal blushed shyly.
You laughed, âIâm serious. You and Michael. Luke and Sierra. Ashton and Kaykay. Iâm surrounded with reasons to believe love exists. The real âcanât imagine my life without youâ kind of love. But for me?â You waved a hand dismissively. âPfft, nah.â
âBecause you donât believe heâs out there for you, or because you already had him and the timing was wrong?â she pressed suggestively.
You rolled your eyes. Right person, wrong time was the excuse you had given when asked when you and Calum split, because to you, it was the closest thing to the truth. âOkayâŚâ you started slowly. âOf course I loved Cal. And I still love him now. But when we were together⌠We were kids who were focused on our careers. And weâre still those career-driven kids. Understanding the balance between professional life and personal life without feeling like weâre sacrificing a piece of it for another was something Cal and I will never master. We tried. I thought if I could find that balance with anyone, it would be with him. But it wasnât. And thatâs okay. Iâm fulfilled in other ways.â
âButâŚâ Crystal kept trying to press.
âBut nothing,â you laughed. âIâm happy with my life the way it is, Crys. And beyond happy for you and Michael. Youâre getting married!â
~~~
Across town in a celebration of their own, Calum was under similar fire. âHappy for ya, mate,â Calum said, clapping Michael on the shoulder.
âThanks, Cal,â Michael beamed. âI think Iâm still in shock from all of it.â
âI think thatâs probably a natural feeling,â Ashton told him, playing the voice of reason. âItâs an exciting change that pulls things into sharper focus.â
âYeah, like all I wanna do now is tell Sierra how much I love her,â Luke put in.
âOh, you fuckinâ sap,â Calum laughed.
âJust because youâve never been in loveâŚâ
âI have too!â Calum defended.
âOh, really? Who?â
âY/N, idiotâŚâ Ashton told Luke with a roll of his eyes.
Luke nodded in a âOh, yeah!â fashion, before going on, âIs she the only girl you ever loved?â
âYep.â
âSo why arenât you still with her?â
Calum shrugged. âTiming was off. And we havenât changed. So why would the timing have suddenly changed?â The question was rhetorical, without the slightest hint of hurt. A simple fact of life, nothing less, nothing more. A fact Calum had made peace with long before.
âSo what? Youâre fine with the greatest love of your life being over 2 years ago?â they questioned anyway.
He shrugged again. âHave been for a while, in case ya havenât noticed. And no,â he raised a hand, cutting off any protest, âthis isnât a bitter, âoh convince me otherwiseâ deal. Y/N and I are both more than happy with the lives weâre living.â
âHow do you know?â
âBecause I talk with her, and I trust sheâs telling me the truthâŚâ
âAlright, alright,â Ashton was willing to let the conversation rest, but he had one last question. âIs there any part of you that would want to try again with Y/N?â
A third and final shrug. âI mean, she was the only one I ever saw a future with aside from the band.â
âThat has to mean something, Cal. Câmon. If there was ever a time to give love a chance, itâs now.â
~~~
While Calumâs head raced with his friends' words of encouragement, if he could call it that, yours raced with thoughts of feeling like you somehow failed in life. Sure, your career was everything you wanted it to be and more. You wouldnât trade a single moment of your life for anything else. But now that your friends were clearly doing more than simple dating, the doubt started to trickle in. Would it be nice to share a life with someone? Absolutely. But not at the risk of your own independence. And the only person who had ever proven that you could maybe have the best of both worlds was Calum. And even that hadnât worked. But maybe there was something to Crystalâs words about it being a case of bad timing. Maybe it was worth another try.
So thatâs where you found yourself, sitting on the edge of your bed, sharing at Calumâs contact, finger hovering over the call icon, trying to figure out where and how to start again with the man. And then your phone was buzzing in your hand, and you gasped. Had you accidentally hit the call button?! No. Calum was calling you. Confused, you hit accept. âHey, Cal. Whatâs up?â
âNot much. Just had a quick question for ya.â
âWell I might have a quick answer for ya.â
You heard his soft chuckle and then a brief pause as he cleared his throat, and you knew he was pushing a hand through his hair, stemming whatever nerves this âquestionâ was creating. âYou got any dinner plans for Friday?â
âNo. Why?â
âThereâs this new place Iâve been wanting a try, and you know how I am about eating out alone. And itâs been a minute since just the two of us hung out. So Iâll pick you up at 7?â
You gave a small laugh at the rushed excuse, wondering what he was really up to. âSure thing, Cal.â
âCool. Oh, and uh, dress in something nice-ish? The restaurantâs kinda uppity.â
Another small laugh. âAlright, Cal. See you Friday then.â
~~~
âItâs just dinner. Itâs just Cal,â you told your reflection as you finished getting ready. âNothing you havenât done a million times before,â you kept trying to calm the butterflies in the pit of your stomach. While you had a pretty good idea on what this dinner really was, you didnât want to get your hopes up that Calum was having the same change of heart that youâd been having. The man really did hate eating alone at restaurants, and if the place was as upscale as he had told you, then it made sense that heâd rather bring you along than Ashton. And he had been right about it being a good while since it was just the two of you spending time together rather than a larger group outing.
But when Calum knocked on your door rather than texting that he was in your driveway, you couldnât stop the blush coloring your cheeks. And when you opened the door to reveal the man on the other side, dressed sharply with a bouquet of your favorite flowers in his hand, you felt your heart skip a beat. âOh, Cal,â you breathed. âYou didnât have to do that,â you told him, taking the flowers and moving to put them in a vase of water.
âItâs how you deserve to be treated,â he said simply with a shrug as he leaned against your doorway.
âYouâre too sweet to me, Hood,â you teased lightly. âReady?â
âAfter you.â
When he went as far as to get the car door for you, you had to laugh. âOkay, Hood. What gives?â
âI told you. Iâm treating you the way you deserve to be treated.â
âNah, thereâs more. I can tell. Câmon. Spill it,â you pressed when he got in the driverâs seat. âFlowers. Getting the door. Dinner at a place that requires me to dress like this. Youâre up to something.â
âYou look stunning, by the way,â he said, reaching over to give your thigh a squeeze.
âCalum Thomas Hood.â
He sighed. âWe were good, right? Like when we were together? Itâs not my memory playing tricks on me?â
âYou were the best boyfriend I ever had,â you answered honestly.
He nodded. âOkay. Youâre not allowed to make fun of me. But since Mike got engaged, itâs gotten to me a bit. Almost like Iâm missing out on something, but itâs weird because my life is already everything I want it to be. So what could I possibly be missing out on, you know?â
âWhy would I make fun of you for that?â
âBecause itâs a stupid ass reason to take you on a date.â
âOh, is that what this is? I hadnât noticed.â
âHa-ha,â he deadpanned. âLook, I guess what Iâm saying is, recent events made me reevaluate things in my life. And I think Iâm in a better position than I was a few years ago to be a real partner to someone. And even when I wasnât that person, you were the only one I could see myself becoming that person for. So⌠if youâre up for it, Iâd really like for us to try again.â
Underneath the streetlight casting him in a soft reddish hue, he turned his head slightly to look over at you, brown eyes hopeful and solemn. When the light turned green, he turned his attention back to the road, but kept stealing glances over at you, still waiting for your response.
âI guess itâs only fair to let you know that Iâve been thinking the same thing.â
The corner of his mouth curved up in a smile. âReally?â
âReally,â you said with a soft smile and a small nod of your head. âI was actually hoping this was more on the date side than the friends grabbing a bite to eat side.â
âGood, because this is definitely a date.â
âGood,â you nodded again before leaning across the center console to press a kiss to his cheek, grinning as warmth spread across his face.
~3 Years Later~
You startled awake at a phone ringing nearby, a tangled mess of limbs and bedsheets. âMmm?â Calum rasped, voice heavy with sleep as he answered the phone, followed by a quick, âWhoa, mate, stop yelling. You did what now?â There was a small pause as whoever was on the other end of the conversation spoke in a rapid flurry that you couldnât decipher. âYou did?!â Calum clarified whatever the news was, sitting up straight in bed, your head falling from his chest to his lap.
âOwâŚâ you giggled, shifting to sit up against the headboard like Calum was.
âSorry,â Calum mouthed, listening intently to whoever he was still talking to, raising a finger for you to give him a minute when you raised an eyebrow in silent question. âThatâs fuckinâ great, Luke! Congrats to the both of you. Lemme know what the plans are for celebrating and give Sierra a hug from me in the meantime, yeah? Alright. Talk to ya later, mate. Bye.â
âWell?â you demanded.
âLuke and Sierra are getting married. Or he proposed anyway, and she said yes.â
âOh, thatâs great!â
âYeah, Iâm really happy for them. Wow⌠first Mike, now Luke. We really arenât the same kids we used to be, are we?â
âI think in some respect you guys still are. You still cling to those roots of who you used to be, the things that shaped you into the people you are now. But you guys are also growing up, too. It happens, Cal.â
âYeah, no, I just⌠Wow. Itâs not something I really pay much attention to, us growing up, until something like this happens.â
âThe last time one of your band members got engaged, you got a case of feeling like you werenât measuring up somehow. Youâre not feeling that way now, are you?â
âNo. Not at all. In fact⌠Luke said something when Mike told us he got engaged. That he wanted to go tell Sierra how much he loved her.â
âAw, thatâs really sweet.â
âYeah, and at the time I made fun of him for it. But⌠I dunno⌠I get it. This type of shit really shifts things into perspective.â
âI mean, yeah. Last time it resulted in both of us thinking we should try being an âusâ again. Whatâs the perspective shifting to this time? Youâre not gonna go out, and buy a ring, are you?â
âNo, I already have one in my sock drawer.â
You choked. âWhat?â
He climbed out of bed with a laugh, making his way to the dresser and rummaging around in one of the top drawers. Then, something small was soaring through the air as he tossed whatever it was onto the bed towards you. âTold ya,â he said simply, as you grabbed the small box, popping the lid to find a ring inside.
âHow long have you had this?â you asked, your voice a small whisper.
âUh⌠2016 I think,â he said as he rejoined you in bed.
âSo, since the first time we dated?â
âYep.â
âCalum!â
âWhat?â he laughed. âI told you our entire relationship, both then and now, that youâre the only person I see a future with. Did you think I was lying?â
âNo! I- I just didnât know you went so far as to get a ring, and keep it for 5 bloody years.â
âWell, it would have been a little weird if you had it all these years, considering⌠ya know.â
You laughed in a mix of disbelief and shock. âYou are absolutely crazy.â
âIâm not actually proposing, you know that, yeah? I mean, yes, the ring is yours. But only if you want it to be. I love the life we have together, more so than I thought I could love any other version of my life. I never feel like Iâm stuck in place, or missing something when Iâm with you. Iâll be just as happy if you never wear that ring, as I would if you wore it every day for the rest of your life. You, me, Duke, and music is all Iâm ever gonna need in life. Iâve known it since the first time I said I love you. Even in those years we thought chasing our careers was more important, you were still the only person Iâve ever been in love with.â
âCalumâŚâ you breathed, your lip trembling.
âShh, if you want the whole deal of the proposal and the picture perfect wedding, Iâll give that to you gladly. Thatâs what the ringâs for. But if youâre content with what we have now, this will always be enough for me, and thatâs a promise.â
âI donât want a proposal only because Luke and Sierra made you extra sentimental. I donât want to take their moment away from them either.â
âThat ring has been yours far longer than any extra sentiment our friends getting engaged could stir up, but I get what youâre saying. If/when you want it, say the word.â
âAsk me again in a year,â you decided. âAnd I mean really ask me. The whole deal.â
âI canât fuckinâ wait,â he murmured as his lips crashed into yours, his hands cupping your face. âIâm so in love with you. Always have been. Always will be.â
I feel another fanon debunk session coming over me, and this oneâs a BIG one.Â
Letâs talk about the DickKory breakup, and why it happened.
Yup, weâre going there.
Before we get going though, I want to make one thing abundantly clear: this is NOT an invitation to bash on Kory. There will be no bashing of Kory on this post if I have anything to say about it, and its my post, so I do. So nyah nyah. But seriously like, donât get my reasons for making this post wrong. I LOVE Kory. I SHIP Dick/Kory. And I donât actually blame Kory for any of this, no matter how the page Iâm about to show makes it appear, for reasons that I will get into later in this post, but like. I really truly donât. I donât think the Dick/Kory breakup ultimately was either of their fault. I think it was the painful end result of them both hitting rock bottom due to endless external fuckery with their lives and their minds during the tail end of their relationship, making it all but impossible for them to be there for each other the way they truly needed and WANTED to be....ultimately forcing them to break off and BOTH try and reorder their lives on their own. But IMO, this NEVER actually marked a dissolution of their feelings for each other, no matter what either (particularly Dick) eventually claimed in order to rationalize things to themselves.
I do however think some of the other Titans bear some culpability for not seeing things as they truly were here. I can understand given what they all went through during this time period like, how maybe it became easier to just blame Dick especially as he has a tendency to be so willing to accept blame? And so I think a lot of conclusions were jumped to that at other times they WOULD have spent more time thinking through. But here and now they didnât simply because they were so relieved to HAVE an easy, simple explanation for things going wrong and someone to blame, someone who ACCEPTED blame. And thus more easily allowing them to speed through to the portion of events where they worked on âforgiving himâ for what heâd done so they could all move past it.
Okay, so let me stop talking in code for those of you who have only the faintest idea of what Iâm talking about.
Traditional fanon states - and most wiki summaries Iâve seen actually CORROBORATE this, which drives me COMPLETELY up the wall because I would like to have WORDS with whomever wrote each of these wiki summaries - that ultimately, Dick and Kory broke up because they rushed into things with the wedding and both realized they werenât actually ready to get married.
Let me be clear: this is totally and completely 100% true.
Fanon and wikis go ON however, to conclude that the âfaultâ lies with Dick, because he was the one who jumped the gun in proposing, and that he only DID so, because he thought getting married would âhelp him finally grow upâ and âhit one of the milestones he thought he was missing while everyone else his age that heâd known in high school and stuff were graduating college and getting married and having kids right about now.â And also that he eventually concluded that he didnât actually love Kory the way he thought he did and needed to let her go for her sake.
Now let me also be clear: this is also MOSTLY true in the sense that he did eventually THINK these thoughts, some ten or fifteen issues after their crashed wedding, when he was off on his own and thinking through everything that was going on in his life and trying to make sense of the decisions heâd been making lately, most of which he was unhappy with.
The one part that ISNâT true is that last bit, which a lot of people extrapolate from and use as their basis for saying Dick âfell out of love with Koryâ and ârealized that he no longer loved her the way he once had,â with this leading into why they never got back together after Kory returned to Earth in the Titans revival series in the late 90s.
HOWEVER.
Thereâs a tiiiiiiiiiny little correction I must make to that last part, which might seem insignificant, but becomes ABUNDANTLY important when added to some other much needed - and much ignored overlooked - context:
Dick never ACTUALLY said or thought that he didnât love Kory anymore, full stop. What he actually said, in its entirety, was that he realized âhe never really loved Kory the way she deserved to be loved.â
Why is this distinction so important? Hang on just a sec, weâre almost there.
Now I would like to share with you, for those who have never seen this page or those who perhaps have forgotten it or its significance, the EXACT page where Dick proposes to Kory, from The New Titans #99, one issue before their wedding special in issue #100. (Whatâs that? Youâre surprised that they got married the very issue after the proposal? You thought that they were engaged for a lengthier period of time? Ohhhh donât worry, fair readers. Weâll get there. Ohhhh weâll get there).
But first, those of you who have never actually read this page before, I would like you to take a look at it, and see if you can Whereâs Waldo what it is about this page that makes my blood reach a boiling point in excess of 2000 degrees Fahrenheit every time someone utters the words âDick rushed into marriage because he thought it would make him grow up or hit some important life milestone.â
Take a gander, what do you see:
See it? Get what Iâm talking about?
Any talk of Dick and Kory breaking up because they werenât ready to get married, and Dick having been the one to rush them into it before they were ready, COMPLETELY fails at accurately representing the events of that time if it fails to mention the fact that:
DICK ONLY PROPOSED WHEN HE DID BECAUSE HE WAS DESPERATE TO CONVINCE KORY, HIMSELF AND EVERYONE ELSE THAT HE LOVED HER AND ONLY HER AND SLEEPING WITH MIRAGE HAD MEANT NOTHING!
(Since, yâknow, he didnât actually sleep with her so much as he was raped by her).
I mean, your mileage may vary, but me, I happen to think that bit there is pretty CRITICAL FUCKING INTEL when it comes to this whole matter.
Claiming Dick is to blame because he rushed into marriage because he was looking to grow up or hit some milestone utterly FAILS as an analytical conclusion in EVERY POSSIBLE WAY....
When there is both ZERO indication from him BEFORE the proposal, that those are reasons or thoughts he has that has him leaning towards proposing.....
As well as ZERO reflection AFTER the failed wedding, that being desperate to convince everyone who thought heâd cheated on Kory that he really did love her, was at all a key motivating factor in him proposing when and how he did.
Like it or not, Mirage and the storyline surrounding that is utterly CRUCIAL to the DickKory breakup, because EVERY mention of that describes the cause of that breakup being rushing into marriage, and if you take away that storyline - and every characterâs reaction to it - there is absolutely NO reason to even THINK Dick would still have proposed when he did.
And thus, leaving the Mirage story ENTIRELY out of all talk of the end of Dick and Koryâs relationship, is just....blatantly not indicative of what the story actually was.
Now, in addition, I know we tend to talk about this story as though DC sucks for never calling the rape what it was, and say that if DCâs not willing to treat these things as what they really are, they shouldnât be using them as story points. First order of business: Yes DC sucks a lot and their handling of all this sucked.
BUT.
It is also not entirely accurate to say that they never TREATED this story as what it was.
Because while everyone else may have been fixated on it as Dick cheating on Kory....initially, at pretty much every point UNTIL the wedding....Dick at least was STEADFAST in not considering HIMSELF having cheated. I mean, look at his language in just the page above. He talks about being ârepulsedâ by what Mirage did. The writers might have never actually called what happened to Dick ârape,â but initially they were VERY consistent in nevertheless writing him as someone who at least to some degree felt victimized by what happened, rather than culpable. He was trying to convince everyone ELSE to see it that way - until eventually he kinda gave up, and started to see it THEIR way.Â
You can literally see him already starting to make the pivot towards rationalizing that POV to himself in the above page....he talks about âthinking with his hormonesâ and that leading him to make a mistake, even though his hormones had nothing to do with whether what happened was wrong or not.....it was always entirely about: would he have consented to sex with Mirage IF he knew she wasnât really Kory. Thinking with his hormones in no way addresses the fact that its completely unreasonable to expect anyone to be so on guard 24/7, even in the privacy of their own bedroom with their own girlfriend, that they have their eyes peeled for an impostor even there.Â
In fact, imagine what the others would have all said if Dick hadnât slept with Mirage that night, or else had confided in them later that it felt not right, that something was wrong, at some point BEFORE Mirage entered and told Dick in front of everyone that it had actually been her. How likely do you think it would have been that instead of taking Dick at face value, many of them would have instead viewed this as just another time Dick was exercising âBat-paranoiaâ rather than allowing himself to be intimate with a loved one the way normal, non-Batfolk do, yâknow? Do you think they would have automatically agreed with him that there was something up and he had reason to feel that âsomething wasnât right about Koryâ when Dick probably still would have had no idea what for sure he felt was off, let alone that it wasnât ACTUALLY her? Or would they have gotten on his case about how this is just him self-sabotaging again and letting his issues come between him and someone he cared about?
Tbh, one of the things that was greatest about Dick and Koryâs relationship IMO was that she was one of the best at getting him out of his own head. With Kory, when they werenât both being jerked around by brainwashing plots and the like, Dick was better at just....letting go and just being himself around her. He didnât feel like he had to constantly be on his guard or waiting for the other shoe to drop. Ironically, IMO, Dick DOES have a tendency to self-sabotage at times and let paranoia or other issues keep him from totally dropping his defenses and letting himself be vulnerable with other people.....meaning he probably would have been MORE likely to cue into something being off, if it had been anyone BUT Kory heâd been dating when Mirage replaced them.
So bottom line is, you canât actually fully blame the writing for the othersâ reactions to this story. Because whether they ever actually acknowledged it or not, for a good ten to fifteen issues up to the wedding, the writers pretty consistently depicted Dick as someone who was and felt victimized, even if he didnât consciously realize it yet himself, let alone why. There were repeated moments between Kory initially breaking up with him after it happened through this proposal above, where it basically reads like Dick yelling âAsk me how violated I feel! Go on, ask me!â Except he never really got the chance because he was too busy replying to everyone around him that he hadnât cheated on Kory, he thought he was WITH Kory, and that was the ONLY reason he had sex that night.
Slight tangent - this btw, is why I can never even get worked up enough about Nightwing Annual #2 to be like, defensive about it. That was the flashback issue written YEARS after all these events, where retroactively Andreyko inserted at some point between this proposal and the wedding - without changing anything else or the events he wrote ever being brought up or acknowledged again - a story where Dick went to visit Babs to personally deliver her wedding invitation....but only AFTER they slept together. And then when he gave her the invitation and she got furious about what had just happened, he just blithely said oh Kory wonât mind, and Babs was like yeah well I MIND!
Which was a totally valid reaction for Babs to have to those events as depicted, its just....I canât remotely take them seriously, not when Iâve actually READ the events that by Andreykoâs own admission are meant to bookend that story. So youâre telling me, that right after Dick proposes to his longtime girlfriend SPECIFICALLY because heâs desperate to convince her he loves only her and would never willingly sleep with anyone else......he would go and sleep with someone else between then and the wedding? And then just without a hint of remorse say oh whatâs the problem, Kory would be fine with it - when literally everything else about the wedding even HAPPENING was based on the fact that he knew for a fact that Kory would NOT in fact, be fine with that? Umm, make it make sense, except you canât, because that story and the point where it makes sense are in two entirely different galactic quadrants. Green Lanterns couldnât make it from Point A to Point B. So lol, sorry not sorry, Iâm gonna stay not taking that story or claims that Dick is ACTUALLY a cheater, like, remotely seriously. I mean, your mileage may vary, but I especially donât think anyone who can make excuses for Bruceâs many transgressions being OOC like, has any business trying to pass this particular story off as in character, but WHATEVS. Like, you CAN do it if you really want to, but I mean, Iâm just gonna think thatâs silly. Iâll be like OMG youâre so silly. Why are you so silly, can we just stop with all the silliness. And then like, Iâll go do something else or whatever.Â
(Oh and for the record, the wedding was the issue after Dick proposed, but it wasnât meant to be like, the day after or anything. BUT we do know it was still pretty damn soon after, like at most a week or two....because the concurrent storyline was Roy being upset because the government was trying to shut down the Titans and said they would unless Roy took leadership from Dick and ousted him, which Roy understandably was NOT keen to do, even and especially with everything going on as the Titans were a family first and foremost and he was stuck between trying to preserve them and keep them going and betraying everything they stood for by basically instigating a vote of no confidence in Dickâs leadership.....but point being, Roy kept stalling the government agent asking for his answer......when said agent was very impatient, and asked repeatedly both in issue #99 AND issue #100. So youâre never going to convince me Roy managed to stall said agent for months or whatever, or any longer than a couple weeks at most, to allow for Dick and everyone else to put together a shotgun wedding for him and Kory. Which just further adds to the make it make sense aspect of the above mentioned Annual, but I absofuckinglutely digress).
Anyway.Â
NOW, letâs bring it back around to when I said like, donât do the thing, donât actually blame Kory for any of this, donât you do it? /paraphrase
Yeah. So weâre there at that point now, and I reiterate once more for the court, like, hey, what if you just donât? Yâknow? Even if youâre looking at her dialogue in the above page I posted and are like, Iâm feeling the urge, the urge to.....idk something that rhymes with urge but is bad I guess? Whatever. Just like. Donât do it. Say nasty things about Kory because of this story three times in front of your computer and I will totally like, be conjured by that and crawl out of your screen all creepy girl from The Ring style. It will NOT be pretty. I am NOT meant to fit through there. I can NOT make it look good. You have been warned.
Okay so like, the reason I say none of this is on Kory even though I donât make the same distinctions for the other Titans is threefold. No, lbr, its probably more on account of I canât count and Iâm always wrong about this shit. But letâs start with three.
1) The first thing we need to address is the fact that Dick WAS acting erratically and out of character through all of this time, even before what happened with Mirage. This was still in the near aftermath of Titans Hunt, and he was still reeling from that, and holding himself totally accountable. People whoâve followed me for awhile have probably seen me fixate on Titans Hunt before, but I honestly donât think anyone who hasnât read the full extent of comics from that storyline all the way through like....The New Titans #115 or so, like.....truly grasps the extent of just HOW much that single storyline affected Dick. He was at rock bottom because of it in a way that is probably only truly comparable with the Blockbuster storyline, but for even LONGER. Like the span of comics I referenced just now covers probably like....almost fifty issues.Â
Thatâs fifty issues where Dick consistently brings up his failure to stop that and how much Joey and Charlie and Arella and everyone elseâs deaths during that like, just weighs on him, and fucks with his confidence and just.....his overall sense of purpose and self. He WAS lost and aimless for a lot of that time. And he DID absolutely even recognize HIMSELF that it was affecting him. Like ten issues or so after the crashed wedding, when heâs on his own journey of self-discovery while looking for Kory in the Amazon (uh yeah, thatâs a thing. Iâll get to that)....like, he acknowledges to himself that ever since the Titans Hunt heâs been getting crazier and more demanding (his words) and he doesnât even recognize himself anymore...and he attributes all of that to not having come to terms with their deaths and his inability to prevent them.Â
Now, notably, he DOESNâT ever at this time acknowledge that his behavior took an INCREASINGLY downward spiral ever since Mirage and specifically due to everyone blaming him for what he deep down felt wasnât actually his fault but was losing conviction in. And quite frankly, even though he SAYS at this point heâs ready to move on from their losses, I donât think that actually happened, but Iâll get back to both those things. First, the important point here, in terms of Kory, is that from her perspective, Dick had been increasingly unpredictable and not himself ever since the losses during Titans Hunt. Actually, given that she was the one who went with him to the Manor after Jasonâs death and the only one who saw him come in and out and who thus knows the full extent of what transpired there - with this all happening not long before Titans Hunt - you could additionally say her awareness of that also has her almost prepared to expect the totally unexpected from Dick at this point.
Does that mean its right? No. But it does mean that its there.
2) Next. Kory was not actually offered the chance by the storyline to internalize what happened between Mirage and Dick from a stable, grounded headspace. Mirage KIDNAPPED Kory and replaced her before she slept with Dick. In the grand scheme of things, what happened to Kory specifically here is probably far from the worst thing thatâs ever happened to her, but it couldnât have been pleasant and Iâm the first to yell NO TRAUMA OLYMPICS so in that spirit, fuck whether it was as bad as it COULD have been, and again, just acknowledge that it happened, and its reasonable and expected that it would have a negative effect on Kory. She was targeted and victimized by Mirage too. Not in the same way as Dick, but add that to the fact that unlike the other Titans, she was the one IN the relationship with Dick and thus the only one besides him that had a stake in what Mirageâs actions served as a catalyst for in that regard, like....she was not an impartial bystander to all this, and that needs to be considered. She was PART of it. It was her life that was hijacked by all this too.
3) Third.....it is extremely extremely EXTREMELY important here to acknowledge that Kory is herself a rape survivor. She has extensive trauma from her childhood in the Citadel, and that is bound to color her perceptions of what happened here, at least initially. I am 174% soooooo not here for vilifying another rape survivor in defense of a different rape survivor. Like, Iâm just saying.....do not throw Kory under the bus for not acknowledging Dickâs trauma and trauma responses as a rape survivor in this story if youâre not also YOURSELF acknowledging Koryâs OWN trauma as a rape survivor.
This is key not because it says any opinions she had at this time donât count, but rather that they simply donât come from the same place as the VICTIM-BLAMING that is the central issue with others holding Dick accountable for his own rape. In Koryâs case, we have to consider the issue of projection. The ways in which her own experiences and how theyâve informed her DEFAULT perception of something that deeply affected her, might skew her initial reaction to experiences which share a LABEL, but not specific ELEMENTS.
What I mean here is both Kory and Dick, as of this point in time, are rape survivors. But they survived very very VERY different kinds of rape. Both were abundantly clear that they DID NOT WANT what happened to them, that they were not willing parties to what actually transpired....but what springs to Koryâs mind when someone says âI didnât want the sex that happenedâ is understandably going to look VERY different from what Dick was describing when he said âI didnât want the sex that happened.â So its not really all that unreasonable for Kory to hold those two things up in her head and say these are not the same, and from there jump to the unfortunate conclusion that Dick HAD wanted it on some level, else it would have looked more like her own experiences...especially because others around them were already voicing and affirming this opinion in various ways.Â
Again, is this fair, or deserved? No. But I talk all the time with other characters and with Dick himself about how its just not reasonable to expect characters - especially ones with highly CHARGED emotions related to their own parallel experiences - to act from an unbiased state or POV and thus leap to the most ideal conclusion without at least first stumbling through some other ones. So with Kory, her own context with rape simply CAN NOT be divorced from the fact that recognizing the central issue of this later moment in time was that it was a rape. Her own experiences and the likely projection of them onto the moment at hand add a degree of context to conclusions she arrived at that other characters simply do not have....and thus, again, its not okay to paint her with the same brush as all those characters. And unless youâre already somehow making a distinction as to why her reaction is different from others despite superficially appearing the same......then like. You need to be. LOL.Â
4) The other factor thatâs important to consider here is that just like Kory was never offered the chance to RECEIVE information of what happened from a relatively grounded place and headspace....the stories never gave her any real time to think things through, process over time, and arrive at different conclusions from her earlier ones. Again, I talk all the time about how Dickâs experiences with the Titans pre-his time in Bludhaven were colored by multiple instances of brainwashing and his head being fucked with and being personally targeted and jerked around in a ton of ways? The same is true of Kory, and it needs to be given equal weight.
Their wedding was crashed by âthe dark soul selfâ of Raven - who they thought was dead - as she infected Kory with what she called a demon seed that was going to grow a new demon inside of her. Due to her possession, Kory spent weeks in a mental institutition, trying to overcome the entity inside her (with Dick sitting by her side and holding her hand through all of it, just FYI). When she finally did purge the entity from her, Kory took off and ended up in a village in the Amazon, with the ordeal having given her amnesia. Dick went after her, but heâd only just tracked her down when she took off again to foil an alien invasion using radio waves that she was uniquely suited to recognize due to being familiar with their tactics, but which pitted her against most of the rest of the world in like, the Ultimate Gaslighting Showdown as everyone kept telling her she was crazy (she was wearing a tinfoil hat to protect herself from the transmissions, the writers were deliberately not doing her any favors).Â
Only after that was foiled did she regain her memories, and while off the page she agreed to meet with Dick to talk about their failed wedding and everything that happened afterward, as heâd returned from the Amazon by now, where heâd ultimately come to his own self-realizations about everything (or what we were told to accept were his realizations)....in the end she took off for Tamaran without meeting him, leaving him waiting where theyâd agreed to rendezvous. Again, I say this not to vilify Kory, because I absolutely think she made the best choice for herself at the time, and should have, and I donât think Dick has ever blamed her for that and tbh they both separately came to the same decisions about needing to be apart to recollect themselves and figure out who they were and where to go from here, like, without having to actually talk it out to arrive at the same point. I DO raise this point simply to put out there that in contrast to many other things Iâve seen said about the break up......they....never technically broke up?
Like I mean, donât get me wrong. They DID. They both considered themselves broken up and eventually moved on with other people, Dick with Babs, and Kory with a general who she married back on New Tamaran before it was destroyed by the Sun Eater (again, Kory went through some SHIT after their break up. Dick wasnât the only one.) But I just mean like.....it was LITERALLY the most mutual break-up that is possible for a break-up to be, because neither one of them ever actually communicated their intent to the other in order for them to both CLEARLY be on the same page. There was no âDick called off the weddingâ - that never actually happened, it was just....never revisited. There was no âDick told her he no longer had feelings for herâ - that was something that happened later, and yes, Iâll get to that too. OMG shut up me. But also shh Iâm talking.Â
But yeah like.....their break-up, despite being almost universally claimed as Dickâs choice and responsibility, with zero mention of Mirageâs role in it in any official accounting of it IâVE ever seen, and with Kory painted as being the victim of Dickâs wandering ways and not knowing what he wanted in the distant aftermath of their break-up, as it was said that due to being Tamaranean, she loved for life and thus would always be in love with Dick even though he after her return claimed he no longer loved her (like, I donât blame Kory but I also donât like takes that act like Dick DID all this to Kory somehow. Like thatâs literally the entire point here, neither of them needs to be to blame or each otherâs victim according to how the story ACTUALLY went).....
But yeah, despite all that.....it really was the most mutually arrived at decision ever, because neither one of them actually EVER EVEN SAIDÂ âWE NEED TO BREAK UPâ to the other. They both just....ended up there on their own.Â
(And also because DC wanted them there in order to secure the rest of their push to put Nightwing solely back in the Batbooks for the next several years. With, donât forget, this all coinciding with the government forcing him out of the Titans and putting Roy in charge and with this all culminating in Dick having his initial adventure in Bludhaven at Bruceâs ask, and then deciding to make that his new base of operations and kinda reinvent himself there, at the start of his solo title. Again, shout out to the myth of âDick Grayson always runs from things because commitment issuesâ - not only did he NOT flee to Bludhaven because he just changed his mind about the wedding and said whoops sorry Kory, it wasnât even his CHOICE to leave the Titans, even if eventually he agreed it was for the best right now. His ex went back to her home planet and he was asked to leave his team. Why the fuck WOULDNâT he go somewhere else?)
NEXT. (jfc he mumbled to himself under his breath. what the fuck did I start here).
Circling back around AGAIN, this time back to Dickâs STATED reasons for deciding things were over.
Two...umm, fuck it, âa number that is more than oneâ things that need to be kept in mind HERE:
1) The most crucial bit of context when examining Dickâs journey of self-exploration in the Amazon while searching for Kory and what he comes to say and think about everything thatâs happened and his own behavior....
Is that he is an EXTREMELY unreliable narrator at this point in time. Yâknow how we talk about Dick having that tendency to take on more accountability than is actually earned and is way quicker to view himself as in need of apologizing than he is to view others needing to do that for him?
Yeah I mean, thatâs a thing, I definitely have like a billion citations ready to go on a momentâs notice, but point is, being aware of that tendency means absolutely nothing if you donât actively APPLY that awareness to Dickâs periods of self-reflection and like....compare and contrast what he THINKS about things heâs said or done with like....what heâs ACTUALLY said or done.
For instance, on the way to his so-called epiphanies about all this, he makes the claim that the entire time Kory was dealing with the demon entity inside of her, he was being so selfish because all he was doing was wishing she would wake up or be free of it so that she could help him with his problems instead. (And just for the record, I can provide actual panels for everything I reference in this post, Iâm just limiting myself to a couple because Iâm just trying to NOT beat War and Peaceâs pagecount as it is. Will I succeed? No. Did I try? Yes.)
Now, Dick spending his time at his possessed fianceĂŠâs side doing nothing but wishing she would snap out of it and focus on his problems instead.....is that selfish of him?
Well, yeah.
But is it TRUE?
I mean, you tell me:
This is right smack dab in the middle of that whole storyline, set only a few issues after the crashed wedding, and before Kory successfully evicts the demon entity and loses her memories. This is literally what Dick was ACTUALLY like the entire time. At the TIME, every single thing he said and did was focused on her.....the CLOSEST he came even in his internal monologue, to making it all about him, was him thinking about how this has shown him just how much he needs her.
Do people helping a loved one through something traumatic occasionally have selfish thoughts where their awareness of their own troubles momentarily supersedes their focus on their loved one? Yeah. Does this actually make them selfish if their ACTUAL focus and actions and words are aimed entirely at their loved ones the whole time, with no single actual detour to âhey, while youâre up, can we talk about me for a secâ?
Mmmmm....I feel like no, but I am open to you drawing other conclusions as long as you are aware that they are wrong and mine is right, kay. I mean okay, fine. You can disagree with me here but Iâm still gonna disagree about your disagreement there and its just gonna be this whole big thing and its like, ugh, whatever, yâknow?
But hey, you do you.
ANYWAY, point is, unless you draw the wrong conclusion here in which case PTTTHB!, like, I think its safe to say Dick thinking in the midst of his self-awareness deep dive that he was being nothing but selfish during that whole story and thus didnât deserve Kory, like....whether or not the writers are actually AWARE of it or not, I mean......thatâs still a pretty good context clue that his internal monologues at this point in time are maybe a little bit skewed towards being more about accepting blame than reflecting reality, right? Yes, no, maybe so?
Well then again, if you agree with me, then add to that awareness the added bit of trivia that every single other one of Dickâs âultimate realizationsâ (he just wanted to get married because he thought it would bring stability to his life, it would help him grow up, hit one of those aforementioned milestones, etc)....like every single one of them.....was an opinion that was FIRST offered by one of the other Titans.Â
Every. Single. One.
(Wanted to get married for the stability was something Donna said she thought was his reasoning, to the other original Titans. The bit about thinking it would help him grow up was unfortunately ALSO Donna, but said to Kory before the wedding when Kory asked if she thought this was a mistake and if she thought Dick had proposed for the right reasons. The milestones thing was said by either Roy, Garth or Wally, I honestly forget which, but it was when the three of them went out to discuss the pending government takeover of the team and how to break this to Dick with everything else going on).
And with not a SINGLE one of these opinions present in ANY of Dickâs internal monologues BEFORE the proposal, hinting that they were anywhere near being on his radar at THAT point.
So....which makes more narrative sense? That Dick ultimately just realized that everything he THOUGHT was motivating him when he proposed was NOT true and that it was only his friends that clued into his actual reasons, which he must have overheard at some point and internalized in order to have replicated said opinions in his thoughts so exactly? Again with ZERO mention alongside any of this, that peoplesâ views of what happened with Mirage was at ALL a factor in his thinking?
Or.....does it maybe better track, that over the course of Dick repeatedly expressing that he didnât know it wasnât Kory, that he never wanted to cheat on her, that he loved her and only her and would never knowingly do that....with NO ONE budging and everyone from Kory to all of his best friends acting like his adulterous guilt was an over and done with conclusion and theyâd already long since moved on to the point of how willing or not they were to forgive him, based on everything else heâd been going through.....and with Dick thinking that how remorseful he appeared to be and how willing to ACCEPT accountability was likely to play a part in how much people were willing to look past all his recent fuck-ups here.......
Does it maaaaaaaybe actually make a little bit more sense that Dickâs total 180 into taking full responsibility and coming up with all these rationalizations for his actions that essentially just mimic theories everyone else had for his behavior has more to do with his deeply internalized acceptance that nobody was listening to his side of the story or what he was actually trying to say (without even real SELF awareness at the time that what he was feeling wasnât just âIâm innocent of what youâre accusing me ofâ but âI was violated and usedâ)?
That it was more about him finding ways to justify to himself getting on the same page everyone else ALREADY seemed to be on in regards to him and his recent behavior, as that seemed to be the only way to move forward, that he was tired of fighting everybody and feeling like he was in the wrong for it so honestly, maybe they were right?
Because from there.....
Its only a veeeeeery short hop, skip and a jump from âwell I guess I DID do what they say and I SHOULD have known it wasnât Koryâ.....to.....âsince the only thing I kept clinging to for how I couldnât know was my insistence that I truly loved Kory, and it turns out that I still SHOULD have known anyway......doesnât that mean that I didnât really love Kory the way I thought I did? Or as much as I thought I did?â
âDid I never really love Kory as much as she deserved?â
Cuz uh, remember earlier when I talked about it being significant that Dick never ACTUALLY claimed during this time that he didnât love Kory anymore or fell out of love with her or anything like that, but rather that his precise claim was âI didnât love her AS MUCH AS SHE DESERVEDâ?
Aka.....âenough that I would have known it wasnât actually Kory that I was with?â
Yeah. Uh, that. Thatâs the significance there. Yeah. So....
2) Now as to something else to keep in mind in regards to Dickâs eventual âself-realizationsâ - this calls back to when I said earlier that Dick WAS acting erratically during this time, stemming all the way back to the Titans Hunt aftermath. He was overly aggressive, he was ready to fight anyone at a momentâs notice, he was tunnel-visioned.....in short, he was actually quite a lot how the fanon interpretations of his temper I rage about usually depict him. But the key thing here, and the reason why I wouldnât have a problem with people drawing references from THIS time when talking about him behaving this way.....
Is that much like when Dick was behaving erratically during the Brother Blood storyline, it was with NARRATIVE INTENT.
There, Dickâs behavior led to the reveal that he was lashing out because he was fighting the Church of Bloodâs mental conditioning. Here, Dickâs behavior is directly tied to his downward spiral resulting from the trauma of Titans Hunt and his guilt from that.
In both cases, Iâd have zero issue with people referencing specific instances of this behavior....
As long as they ALSO reference and acknowledge the specific narrative context that was directly CONNECTED to that behavior. Its not about whether or not it excuses any specific thing he does, its about the fact that while these behaviors did happen, they shouldnât be depicted as indicative of his OVERALL characterization, because they were specifically and deliberately written into his actions WITH INTENT by the writers, who were trying to use his DELIBERATELY out of the ordinary behavior to arrive at some narrative point or conclusion.
And here, for Dick, that was the eventual realization that heâd never fully dealt with his feelings about the losses during the Titans Hunt.
I donât like how he acts in a lot of the issues around this time. Its ugly. But its MEANT to be ugly. I donât like Dickâs fight with Roy when he tells him about taking over leadership because of the governmentâs interference. I donât like it AT ALL.Â
But what I DO like is how the very next page after the fight, after Donna follows Dick out of the room, Dick turns around and acknowledges how out of control heâd just been and said he felt it proved that everyone was right, things HAD gotten to him more than heâd realized or admitted to himself, and it probably was a sign he needed to take a step back, and besides, Kory needed him more than the team did right now anyway.
THATâS one of the core things I like about Dick Grayson, that almost without exception, his worst actions or behaviors are almost immediately followed by his realization of this and a tangible action or change in his actions to address it. Thatâs not something every character can claim - in fact, its unfortunately pretty damn rare.
But hereâs the problem with that, in this specific scenario:
Dick WAS spiraling, he DID act out in ways he was right to be called out on and to feel guilt about, and there WAS basis for him acknowledging that there was stuff he needed to address in his life and his head, and to take responsibility for.
Thing is though, nobody else at any point ever stood up to point to where in his willingness to hold himself accountable for his mistakes and try and do better in regards to his friends and teammates and overall relationships....
He additionally took on guilt that WASNâT deserved. Because the other Titans were the ones who in their overall rush to judgment about his behavior and the reasons why.....still erroneously lumped in with the rest, their conclusion as to how the situation with Mirage should be viewed.
And frankly, though this doesnât make them look good, thereâs plenty of places you can go with that which donât make them heartless monsters either. They were wrong, not to listen to him about Mirage, and I maintain that this tangibly WORSENED his already existing downward spiral from Titans Hunt, because that was already stuff he really could have benefited from support for the others from....and then this other thing happened that he additionally really needed support about, rather than blame.
Problem is, the overall impression given off by the other Titans was that they thought they already WERE doing their best to be supportive, by being so willing to look PASTÂ âwhat Dick had done with Mirageâ and FORGIVE Dick for that, make allowances for why it and other decisions they didnât agree with, like his rush to marriage, might make sense based on what they were attributing as the reason for his out of character behavior....the fallout from Titans Hunt...but ONLY that.
Like to be clear, Iâm aware that there is a flip side of things in fanon, where some stans overcorrect on Dickâs behalf and act like the Titans all universally slut-shamed Dick and were terrible to him. No. Thatâs not what happened either. There was ONE slut-shaming Titan and ONLY one....and that was Pantha, who to be frank, like.....she was literally written to be the button pusher in regards to everyone. She likely would have said the same thing no matter who was in that situation, because she honestly didnât care, she was just interested in making the cheap jokes at their expense.
The other Titans though did not adopt a slut-shaming stance against Dick...just a victim-blaming one. Which makes some things better, but some things worse IMO.
Its easier to understand how they could have all fallen into this trap despite all being seasoned heroes who should have known better than to view these specific events the way they did....if you consider that their fatal flaw here was ironically that they were SO quick to try and find a reason that Dick might have done this that they felt they could forgive....that they never actually thought things through long enough to recognize how quick on the draw theyâd been in their reactions. And then they failed to listen to Dickâs side of things because theyâd kinda convinced themselves that they were ALREADY doing him a favor and hearing him out by having decided to look past what heâd done and make allowances for it....and so they kinda filtered everything he was saying through a lens of like...waiting for him to catch up to what theyâd already decided had happened and onto the part where he did the Dick Grayson thing and apologized and accepted responsibility for it....at which point they, as his friends, would be honestly able to say âalready forgiven, dude.â
You could additionally factor in the idea that their very respect for his capabilities and high opinion of his overall âon the ball-nessâ made what had happened easy to view as something thatâd just slipped past his radar, a rare oversight that again, he could be forgiven for, rather than what it was....again, something that he should never have been expected to âcatchâ in the first place, any more than they would have been.
Either way, the real problem was always just that they failed to support him in the ways he actually needed, because they were already busy forgiving him for things he didnât actually need forgiveness for because they were never his to accept blame for in the first place. But then BECAUSE Dick was already primed to accept the blame for what he WAS right to accept responsibility for, he overextended and took on everything that was held against him, rather than first differentiating between where a mea culpa both was and WAS NOT due.
No matter how you slice it, the Titans WERE wrong on this front, and Dick absolutely DOES have canon grounds to nurse some bitterness and resentment about, towards them. Again, with a lot of ways that can be approached. Personally, when I think about fics tackling this subject, my big want is always gonna be like.....confrontation fics? Like thatâs what Iâve always really wanted to see here....like thereâs a lot of obviously valid catharsis to be had in fics that have someone walk Dick through what a more objective view of what happened back then and let him finally unburden himself of all that unearned guilt there...BUT all the focus there is typically on that realization of the truth for DICK, that like....thereâs almost never any follow-up where that realization is further pursued and extended to the relevant Titans? And tbh, Iâve always viewed that as the far greater âcrimeâ this story executed in regards to Dickâs character....not an overall obliviousness to his own victimization, period, but the fact that he was basically pushed into ACCEPTING a culpable view of events when actually, heâd always KNOWN on some level that it wasnât really his fault and he had every reason to feel repulsed and angry and violated.
Like, I do obviously view Dick as someone with a large degree of self-awareness, in no small part due to how often he DOES do these introspective deep dives and reflect on events and actions and behaviors, and even though I understand the viewpoint that things look different when applied to yourself than to others, I do think its perfectly likely that Dick would at some point come to his own realization about what had actually happened with Mirage and why heâd initially felt the way he did about it. Maybe not before the events with Tarantula, but in the aftermath? I think he absolutely would connect certain things then, even if just because of how FAMILIAR everything felt to that earlier time post-Titans Hunt. The Blockbuster arc was like, the most rock bottom Dick had ever been SINCE that point, and various similarities could have definitely been pinging all over for him....the losses he suffered reminding him of his guilt for the fallen Titans, the end of Dick and Babsâ relationship, while based on more reasons than just Tarantula kissing Dick, like, still including that as a reason and so thus bearing an uncomfortable similarity to the last time he was held accountable for his rapist and now eventual rapistâs actions, etc.
And I do think that Dick having some realizations of his own post-Blockbuster could explain a LOT about his later interactions with the Titans, who I honestly donât think he was ever quite as close to again?
Which makes a ton of sense if you view the 1999 series, and how difficult it was for them to get Dick to join up, and how he was plenty ready to leave at any point...like, that makes a TON of sense if you consider that Dick might have at this point been quietly nursing hurt of his own that everyone was so eager and willing to let bygones be bygones and âforgiveâ his mistakes of the past, that nobody still had ever realized what heâd had to realize all on his own....that THEY all had a perception of events and like, their friendships, that included forgiving Dick for a betrayal that Dick NEVER ACTUALLY ENACTED. Where its like, thanks, but I didnât actually need that, what I needed was someone to listen to me. But at the same time its totally understandable why he wouldnât ever want to bring that up himself....because heâd already TRIED expressing himself on this matter years before, and been shot down, and its totally reasonable that he worried history would just repeat there rather than bring him the closure he WANTED on that front. But again....the distance he keeps a lot of the Titans at after his return to the team pairs pretty damn well with him being both quietly resentful of forgiveness he never needed and wondering when it was everyone elseâs turn to accept the accountability for wrongs done that everyone was always so quick to demand from him....as well as why the last thing in the world heâd want to do is bring this all up again himself.
Similarly, this is why I think he always expressed to Kory, ever since her return to Earth, that he wasnât in love with her anymore.....I donât think its necessarily true that his feelings ever fully went away, and I also donât think heâd bear the same resentments towards her that he did the others, even though Kory too âforgaveâ him for something he never needed absolution for. Because I think at the same time, heâs more aware than most of Koryâs own history, and he has too much empathy for what all that likely stirred up for her at the time as well as his awareness that she really did love him and always had and that sheâd mourned their relationship just as much as he had.Â
So I truly donât think Dick blames her, in ways that canât be said of the others, and I donât think it was truly that he didnât love her anymore, or that there was no longer anything there....I think he always just said that in order to protect himself, because he was still hurting from everything that had happened back then and how everyone had always painted it as his fault ever since, and his own traumas had only compounded those very specific feelings with later events like Tarantula and her impact on his life, and its just like......I think if it ever came out via someone else re-raising the issue, Dick would be like okay, yes, absolutely letâs finally talk about this....but I totally understand why Dick would never want to re-raise it himself because....he definitely did TRY to express his violation way back when. Why should he be the one to have to essentially.....retry his own case with his friends in order to finally get the verdict he should have had all along, yâknow?Â
Its one thing to get that its probably never going to happen without initiating it himself, but its another thing for that to get you past the hump of just not wanting to relive some of your worst moments when your best friends not believing in you or being so willing to believe something about you in some ways did just as much damage to you as the actual initial violation.
But again, all that said, I would absolutely like, rob the Louvre (Okay Iâd also rob the Louvre just for money but like. You get it) for stories where one of the Titans has an âoh shitâ realization about everything with Mirage years later. And they tentatively try and bring it up with Dick in the hopes of âfixing thingsâ by correcting the damage theyâd done when making him feel it was his to accept blame on.....and for Dick to just be like. âYeah, uh, I was there. I figured all that out a long time ago, I just didnât see the point in trying to convince everybody twice.â And them like....being like oh crap we have to figure out a way to make things right, like all this time weâve thought things were kinda broken between us because of what Dick did but actually it was the other way around and about Dickâs feelings about what WE did.
Okay now like....donât laugh but Iâm literally still not done, because I had this whole other thing about how now we needed to finally talk about the Zitka in the room, which is that IMO its always been kinda backwards to view Tarantula as the focal point of Dickâs traumas here and what happened with Mirage as some kind of footnote kinda....personally I think it should be the other way around. That its Mirage that weighs on Dick the most because what she did was premeditated where with Catalina it was a crime of opportunity. With Miriam though, it was always going to happen no matter what, because it only happened because she MADE it happen. She like....stalked Dick pretty much from the time of her arrival in this timeline (or at least how that initially was viewed - the timeline thing, not the stalking thing. Forget it. Weird story is weird. Doesnât matter). But like....Mirage went after Dick with intent. She knew exactly what she was doing, and she was willing to do whatever to make it happen, up to and including kidnapping Dickâs actual girlfriend and taking her place.
With Tarantula, like, she was more than quick to seize on the first opportunity to make it happen, but like...thatâs still a different thing IMO from like...KNOWING that someone literally plotted out and premeditated one of the most disruptive traumas of your life without any care for what it would DO to your life, and you later carrying all the blame for that in everyone elseâs eyes without anyone ever acknowledging what it did to YOU....even though MULTIPLE people know and its even affected your overall reputation. With Tarantula....I think that trauma absolutely compounded everything else that happened with Blockbuster but it was hardly limited to just that, but again with Mirage....that one specific act pretty much derailed the entire course of Dickâs life at the time. Because again....while you could absolutely claim that there are other issues Dick and Kory might have broken up because of later, even without Mirageâs actions, like....you have to MAKE the case for those reasons. You canât just attribute their breakup to rushing into marriage, when again....Mirage was the literal catalyst for Dick proposing when he did.
Which again, to bring it all back to the start.....thatâs why it will forever make me channel Gar Logan and turn into a green-hued screeching howler monkey every time people are like I absolutely agree that its not okay to blame Dick for his own rape at Mirageâs hands....but then turn around and be like okay, but Dick and Kory did break up because Dick rushed them into marriage before they were ready.
Cuz.
Like.
THEYâRE THE EXACT SAME THING!
The one is just the other but described from a different vantage point.
faslkfhaklfhaklfhkalfha
I get if people didnât know that before now, but please please please can we like....push back against the misinformation on this particular topic because omggggg is it unpleasant to repeatedly hear people contradict themselves in the same paragraphs half the time because they literally donât know that theyâre talking about the same events in both cases.
Believe it or not, I actually had a lot more about Mirage and about other ways things could have gone differently for Dick and Kory if heâd had even just a little more support from someone else at the time, whether from Bruce or even just one of the Titans, like all it would have taken was just ONE person to try and view things from Dickâs perspective and be like okay everyone hold up, some bad fucking conclusions have been arrived at here.
BUT I am tired and this is long and literally just...whatever. Iâll do that some other time. LOL. And I bounce.
Hello! Would you mind writing some headcanons for Ace, Marco and Thatch (separately) with a female (Y/n) thatâs a procrastinator and really good at using the puppy eyes 𼺠She gets really stressed whenever she have a bunch of work piled up, but she just canât get herself to do it. When it does come down to doing it last minute, she always finish before the deadline, but not without being under overwhelming stress the whole time. And whenever the guy tries to help by trying to convince her to do the work earlier, sheâd pull those eyes on them. Which worked brilliantly every time... except for this time, where she has way too much work left untouched, and the guys were determined to help her this time, even if it meant overcoming the largest hurdle theyâve seen in their life: the puppy eyes *serious voice*
Please and thank you in advance ^w^
⥠Summary- [requested] a s/o whose a procrastinator yet really good at puppy dog eyes
⥠Characters- Portgas D. Ace, Marco, Thatch
⥠Warnings- none :)
⥠Omg I might as well be the queen of procrastination, although I definitely donât have the puppy dog eyes I literally will put everything off the last minute, it is so stressful and annoying đŠ
Portgas D. Ace
- in all honesty this man isnât the best to have if you a procrastinator. Ace is kinda one himself too, so he doesnât really help much.
- but that doesnât mean he wonât try to help, heâll try to persuade you to get work done or at least start a project but itâs never works. Ace always find himself falling victim to your puppy dog eyes. And as a fellow procrastinator, he doesnât want to force anything
- Ace will really not force you do anything, he wants you to have the freedom to choose what do you. Thereâs no way Ace is gonna control you buttttt when it gets to the point where you havenât done anything, not even turn in your island report for when yâall explored a new island, he figured he had to do something
- Ace had to find some way to actually get you to do your work on time, or at least start it. He would spend days just trying to figure out what would get you motived but everything he tried failed. It always resulted in you giving him the infamous puppy dog eyes
- it was practically impossible, Ace couldnât do anything. He even tried to talking to the others about it but everything they suggest he had already tried. Expect there was on suggest that the others suggested as a joke but Ace thought it was amazing
- so next thing you know, a week before everything week due, Ace had locked you up in a room, taking the key with him. Now heâs killed 2 birds with one stone, you have nothing to distract you and now Ace wonât have to look at your puppy dog eyes.
- you were beyond pissed. Your boyfriend literally just locked you up in a closet just so he doesnât have to look at you. And just out of the frustration you decided to do your work only to prove Ace wrong.
- long story short, Ace, in his own way, was able to finally get you to do your work. And a week early too. You were definitely pissed when he finally let you out and definitely showed up but now you were able to be pissed without having to stressed about work. To at least you can thank him for thatâŚ.
Thatch
- this man is the biggest victim to your puppy dog eyes. It doesnât even have to be over work, you flash him your eyes and his like putty in your hands.
- and Thatch knows how unhealthy it is so procrastinate all the time, forcing stress on yourself. But he simply canât find the courage do force you to do anything when he sees your eyes
- Thatch really hates the stress your putting your body in but he really doesnât want to force you to do things that makes you uncomfortable but sooner or later, Thatch was gonna have to speak up. You canât always procrastinate
- in to help you out, He stays up late to prepare a room just for the 2 of yâall with a few snacks some water and a few blankets here and there. There were hardly in distractions in the room too.
- Thatch doesnât want to force you to do your work alone so he decided to help out as much as he can. Of course heâs not gonna do your work for you but he can help with keeping your focused.
- you can try to giving him the puppy eyes too but Thatch now how nerves is steel, heâs not gonna let a pair of cute, beautiful eyes distract him either. So with you like it or not Thatch has finally put him foot down, gently, and made you do your work.
- although it took yâall a while to get work done, yâall got it done and thatâs all that matters. Thatch didnât want to force you to do anything especially by yourself so Thatch sat there for the whole time you were working , not leaving or getting bored.
- it was super sweet of him too, and it worked. You had finally gotten all your work done and before the deadline too. So with all your new free time, you made sure to play Thatch back with a bunch of kissed and a hugs.
Marco
- for as sweet as his man is, he has nerves of steel. Procrastination will not work for this man, when you have something that needs to get done you best get it done
- as Whitebeardâs second in command, a lot of responsibility falls on his shoulders so there are a lot to times where even Marco canât procrastinate so heâs just gotten into the habit of trying to do everyone as soon as he gets it.
- so you canât really blame him for wanting you to do things right away. But of course just like Thatch, if you flash him your puppy dog eyes. Marco will let you slide for the day, then the next, then the next, then the next, and itâs just goes on and on
- in all honesty, Marco forgets just how much youâll use the puppy dog eyes on him to get outta work. He just has too much other work to do. But of course you wonât get away with it forever. Marco finally realized it when he going thru papers and realizes he hasnât seen your name on any of them
- thatâs when Marco finally puts his foot down. He wonât be falling for the puppy dog eyes anymore. So donât even bother trying. Of course, hes not gonna tie you down to a chair and force you to work but heâs definitely gonna get the paperwork before the deadline
- so this is where his plan comes in. Itâs a mix between both Aceâs and Thatchâs plan of action. Marco will lock you in a room with no distractions but the room will be his office just so that you wonât be alone.
- this way, he can make sure you doing all the work you need and getting it done without any distraction but still having someone to talk to and guide you.
- itâs definitely not how you thought you would get your work done. But it somehow worked. You were a little upset that your puppy dog eyes didnât work anymore but even you knew that you had to start sooner or later. Good thing your boyfriendâs like extremely responsible.
A/N: One shot, kinda long, enjoy xx
Summary: Nat is Râs trainer, R is on love. They go on a mission, R gets hurt protecting Nat. Nat feels guilty but R tells her, sheâd do it again - fluff follows.
Pairing: Natasha Romanoff x fem!reader
Words: ~ 5k
âAgain. Get up and throw a punch. Câmon y/nâ it took everything in you to not roll your eyes at the antics of your trainer. You had been going at it for a couple of hours now and honestly you were beat. Laying on the mat you looked up at the beautiful women. She was looking down on you, a slight sheen of sweat covering her face and collarbones. For a second you zoned out just looking at her until you felt her kicking your feet.
âWhatâs wrong? Already in dream land? Get up. One more round and then weâll have lunch.â At the mere thought of food your felt adrenaline rush through your body and you jumped up excitedly. A slight chuckle coming from the other woman, âif only the success of training had that effect on you.â
âWell, what can I say?â You started getting in position. âgetting punched in the face by an assassin is just not really motivating.â A smirk grew on your opponents face and the feeling it caused in your gut made you blush a little. God, there was nothing she could do that wouldnât be absolutely fucking hot.
âShow me what you got and maybe Iâll allow you to have dessert.â she winked. She winked at you. The flirting between the two of you had been going on for a while. Ever since your first mission together, in which you had gotten to know each other on a more personal level, there was always something in the air.
You couldnât decipher whether she meant what she said or if it was simply fun to her. But what you did know, was that it had caused you to fall head over heels for the woman. Not that you would tell her. Or anyone for that matter.
Refocusing on the fight ahead of you, you lifted your fists to somehow cover your face. Jumping back and forth on the tip o your feet, you prepared to make the first move.
You had learned quickly that if you would wait for her to start, the result would be a lot more painful. So, to avoid any broken bones you went for her face. Of course, you hit the air, you donât think youâve ever actually gotten her. Not even close. But that didnât bother you, she was still the freaking Black Widow and you were a simple Agent.
The two of you exchanged some punches with almost none of them landing, until suddenly Natasha stopped in her tracks.
âAll right letâs have lunchâ she moved her hand towards the exit of the gym, and you were confused. Looking at her skeptically, your fists slacked, and your posture slumped.
âUh,â you started uncertainly, âokayyyy. Letâs goâŚthen.â slowly, really slowly you moved your back towards her only breaking eye contact once it was physically impossible to keep it. She was planning something, you were sure. You donât remember a single incident when she would stop a fight just like that. Without a winner. No, something was going on here.
And just when that thought left your mind you were pulled back while you tripped backwards over her legs. Landing with a harsh sound on the floor. Her face came into view and she was smirking.
âRemember, always be aware of your surroundings!â
This time you rolled your eyes. âThat was totally unfair, and you know it. No real enemy would just stop in the middle of a fight and then pull some shit like that.â you huffed when she outstretched her hand and pulled you up.
âLife is not fair. You and I both know that.â With a smile she dropped your hand, and you immediately missed it. She turned away from you and picked up her water bottle.
While she was drinking you took her in. How her neck moved when she drank the water, how there was a little more sweat now and one or two drops rolled down her neck and disappeared in her shirt. Your eyes moved down her body, her shoulders her arms, her buttâŚ
Quickly you averted your eyes. Youâre not a creep. Itâs not normal to stare at a friend like that and you needed to stop. It wasnât going to get you anywhere. Shaking yourself out of your stupor you went to grab a towel and your bag.
âIâll take a shower real quick and then Iâll meet you in the common room, yeah?â Sending her one last smile you left the room while taking a deep breath. Walking away, you missed her eyes wandering down your body until you were out of her sight.
------
After a quick (cold) shower, you got dressed in some comfy clothes and made your way downstairs. You were one of the few simple agents that lived in the facility. But since you had literally nothing and no one, your job was your life and therefore it only made sense to live there.
When you proposed that to the other Avengers, they were happy about it. You didnât really work with them much, except maybe Clint and Natasha but over time you had become great friends with them, and Tony was more than willing to design a room just for you.
Walking in the kitchen you saw Natasha already sitting at the counter, her hair up in a loose bun with some strands falling in her face. You kind of wanted to move them behind her ear so they wouldnât bother her while reading the file in her hands. The file. You almost didnât see that. Making your way over to her you asked,
âWhatâs that? You got a mission?â
She looked up at you and smiled softly. âNo, we got a mission. Itâs an easy one, but weâll have to stay at a safe house for three days. Weâre leaving tonightâ staying at a safe house with her made you nervous. It wouldnât be the first time you would have to do that, but since your feelings have only gotten stronger you were unsure how this was going to play out.
Swallowing your nerves, you plastered a big smile on your face. âSounds like fun. But on to more important matters, whatâs for lunch.â Eliciting a laugh from the redhead you couldnât help but smile at her.
You loved her laugh. She didnât do it very often, but it made your heart melt every time. It felt special when you were the one causing it. Smiling to yourself you turned around and made your way to the kitchen with Natasha following you closely.
 -----
âUgh, this is the worst.â huffing you threw your bag on one of the two beds in the safe house. âHow can we have so much money and our safe houses look like this.â exasperated you flopped down on the bed and moved your arm to cover your face.
âOh, câmon. Weâve had worse, donât you remember Louisiana last year?â she asked with a slight smirk on her face.
âOh god, donât remind me. Youâre right, that was the worst one, but this right here is a close second.â you moved your arm away from your face and your eyes searched the room until they landed on Natasha. She was unpacking some of her stuff.
For a moment you got lost in her movements. It was always mesmerizing to watch her do anything. She was never unsure of a single move and everything looked so elegant yet so lethal.
You groaned internally, she was only putting away some of her clothes and thatâs what you were thinking? How can someone be so obsessed with another person?
Trying to distract yourself, you got up and made your way to the kitchen. âHopefully, they filled the fridge. Iâll make us dinner and then we can go over the plan for tonight.â Not waiting for an answer, you opened the fridge and saw an acceptable amount of food. You were sure you could make something nice and immediately your thoughts were completely enraptured by your cooking plans.
After a couple of minutes of cooking, you felt the presence of the other woman behind you. She was quiet, which wasnât new to you. While you considered Natasha a good friend, talking about deeply personal things was never something you had done. Not that you werenât both interested but knowing how much both of you had on their plate, it just didnât seem to be an easy conversation.
Thatâs why her next question surprised you. âSo, what exactly got you to move into the Avengers facility?â she sounded so nonchalant, it took you a minute to figure out what to say.
Sensing your hesitation, she quietly said âYou donât have to answer that. Iâm sorry if I overstepped.â
You turned around, and when you saw her looking at you intently your lips quirked up a bit. She looked beautiful in this light and you couldnât help but just stare at her. She didnât seem to mind because she did the exact same thing to you.
In this atmosphere you felt extremely safe. You always did when she was around, so you wanted to tell her everything about yourself. You just wanted her to know you and your story.
âI donât have anything but this job. My father was an asshole and my mom died when I was very young. I lived with an aunt, but we never really got along, so I moved out when I was 16 and took my chances. I applied for this weird program that would assure you a job and financial help, you just had to pass some test. I passed it and just like that I was in the middle of S.H.I.E.L.D. It took me a while to climb the levels because I struggled with my social skills. I basically failed every single test about undercover work.â a light laugh left your mouth and when you looked up you saw green eyes focused entirely on you and what you were saying.
âAnyway, a while later I was introduced to one Clint Barton. He was great and we got along very well, but he was in the special division and I was not. So, we didnât have a lot of jobs together. Â But we hung out and stuff. Until he was called on this highly secretive mission in Budapest. I think his job was to exterminate an enemy but instead he brought her into S.H.I.E.L.D and she became one of, if not the best Agent. Iâm not sure if you know her, she can be quite annoying.â
A washcloth hit your face and you started laughing. âYouâre an idiot.â shaking her head, Natasha moved around you to get the dishes for the table. When she was right next to you, she paused and lifted her head.
âThanks for telling me that. I appreciate it.â it was barely a whisper. She was so close, and it wouldnât have taken much for you to kiss her. Two, maybe three inches and your lips would have touched hers.
Instead, you cleared your throat and moved away. âWell, uh youâre welcome. Set the table, Iâll bring the food in a second.â
Natasha looked at you for a while longer and then decided to just do what you had said. It almost seemed like she was reluctant to move. When she left the kitchen, you leaned against the counter and let out a long sigh. Slowly, you moved to get the food and carried it to the table, where the redhead was patiently waiting for you.
 ----
After dinner it was time to get ready. Both of you put your suits on and attached all the necessary weapons to it. You had some guns, but your favorites were always the knives. It was easier to move with them and quite honestly, you were also fucking good at it.
When you were finished, the two of you left the house and made your way towards the building youâd have to infiltrate in order to get some intel on some rich dude selling alien weaponry.
âOkay listen, weâll go in, get the intel and get the hell out of there. No unnecessary fighting and no casualties but also, no captures. Someone comes for you, end it. Try not to die and weâll be fine.â
A dry chuckle left your lips and you looked over at the redhead, âWow, Nat. Your pep talks are almost as good as Steveâs.â She didnât look at you, but you could see that small smile you liked so much. It made you happy and you couldnât help but smile as well.
If only you could see that more often. Yes, the two of you spend a lot of time together, but there always seems to be some kind of barrier. There were moments in the past, when you felt like you were getting even closer, but every time she would pull away and not talk to you for a couple of weeks, finding excuses as to why she couldnât train you that day.
Right now, you were in a good space. It had been a couple of months since that last happened and you had to admit it was the worst one. She wouldnât talk to you; she wouldnât look at you. It was hell and that was the time you realized your feelings were a lot more than just a crush.
You had made a plan to not let her back in if she decided to come back with an apology, but when she knocked on your door in the middle of the night, nervous as youâd never seen her, you couldnât help yourself but forgive her.
So now, here you were. On a mission with you constantly thinking about her, knowing you were in love with her and not being able to keep your eyes off of her.
----
âThe hallway is clear.â you whispered into your comms. Getting into the building was surprisingly easy and both of you were a little suspicious. But the mission had to be completed, so you continued to be careful.
âAll right. Come back here and cover me while I retrieve the data.â you could here her voice in you ear. Nodding your head, you quietly walked back to where she was. Locking eyes and nodding in confirmation that the two of you were fine, you entered a room that looked like a control room.
While Nat put her gun away and walked to one of the computers, you turned around and made sure no one was coming. It was quiet. Too quiet. You were beginning to get concerned, checking the hallway again your turned around to her âSomething feels off, Nat. Maybe we should go.â
Just when you finished your sentence, you heard a loud bang coming from the other side of the hallway. You were about to say something else when you heard Nat moving. âAll right, got it. Letâs get the hell out of here.â
Getting your guns out you made your way towards the exit. No one was in your way. There were no soldiers or agents or weapons. It was weird and that feeling in your stomach wasnât dissipating.
âNat, this is weird.â You turned your head to look back at her and thatâs when you saw him. A lone Agent with a freaking sword in his hand, charging towards the two of you.
Without thinking you stepped in front of Natasha and were about to shoot when the sword lodged itself into your side. There was no pain and you barely registered the sword, until you pulled the trigger and it was removed by the body falling to the ground. All that happened within a single second.
âY/n!â Nat was quick to catch you, before you fell on the ground. Her gun still raised she inspected your wound with a shaking hand. She was panicking.
âIâm fine Nat. I donât think it hit anything vital. It just hurts like a bitch.â groaning, when she put pressure on your wound, you tried to reassure her.
She was frantic in her movements. You donât even think she heard you or registered that you were talking. To calm her, you reached up to touch her cheek. âNat, I am fine. Letâs just go, so nothing else happens.â
That helped and suddenly she stopped moving and looked down at you. Leaving was easier said than done. Just as you were about to move the sound of footsteps made you halt your movements. Locking eyes with Nat you both knew that there was a change of plans.
âNat, we need to leave. Now.â Your hand was wrapped around her shoulders while she held on to you, trying not to touch your wound.
âThey are probably blocking our point of entry. We canât just go there with you hurt like that. Do you remember another exit?â she was nervous. You could feel her heartbeat from being so close and her hand on your waist kept squeezing in a rhythm almost as if she was trying to ground herself through your touch.
âThere is no other exit, but I have an idea. If we get close enough, we can just blow them up and get out of here. I have three grenades on me.â
âYou brought grenades? Are you fucking kidding me? You know those things are unpredictable, what if you get blown up while fighting hand to hand?â she whisper-screamed at you. Her face was set, and she was in full trainer mode. You rolled your eyes, wincing when you moved your body a little bit.
âGive me a break. Now is not the time. I have a fucking sword wound, I am losing blood and you want to lecture me about grenades? Just grab them and blow these assholes up so we can leave.â At the mention of your wound Natâs face turned to a worried frown again.
âOkay, okay. Letâs got.â
With a groan, caused by the pulsating pain in you side, you walked towards the exit as fast as you could. Before you turned the corner, Nat guided you to the ground.
âHey, hey what are you doing? Help me back up!â you couldnât stop her from pushing you down, it was simply too much pain.
âYou canât fight, obviously. So, Iâm going to throw the grenades and take care of possible survivors and then Iâll get you.â She was about to stand up, but you pulled her back down by her arm. Fear enveloped you heart. You didnât know how many people were out there and there was no way youâd let her fight all of them alone.
âNo! Nat, listen. We donât know how many there are and what if itâs too many, what if the grenades donât do shit. I canât let you go alone.â At this point you were desperate for her to listen to you, but she was already reaching around you to get the three grenades.
Before she pulled away completely, she put her hand on your cheek and looked at you as if you were the most precious thing on this planet.
âYou canât help right now. I got this; I promise. So, you just sit here and be pretty and let me handle this, okay?â her eyes pierced yours and there was nothing but sincerity, love and a little bit of worry in them. Enraptured by her beautiful eyes you leaned into her touch and nodded slightly.
With one last look at you, she stormed off. All you could do was lean your head against the wall, put pressure on you wound and hope to the gods, that the woman you were in love with would come back to you.
After a couple of minutes of silence, you were almost happy when you heard the grenades go off. At least that meant she was still alive. Now you just had to wait a little while longer.
You listened closely, trying to make out any sounds; guns, fighting, anything. But it was completely silent except your own shallow breath.
âThis is taking too long. Something is wrongâ With a loud groan you moved to get up, just as you were about to try and stand up, a pair of warm hands landed on your shoulders. You looked up and there she was. Covered in debris but still beautiful as ever.
Seeing her made you realize how scared you really were. Tears started gathering in your eyes, you closed them and took a deep breath.
The two hands helped you up and one of her arms sneaked back around your waist. Leaning your head against hers you quietly whispered, âThank God.â
The way back to the safe house took longer than expected, since you still couldnât walk properly. But after what felt like hours, you were finally back in the warmth of the house and you couldnât help but be glad to be back in this dump of a place.
âCome on, we need to clean the wound.â
Her voice seemed to be very far away and you realized you almost dozed of on the way here. She almost carried you at this point and you felt bad, so you quickly shifted your weight back on your legs.
In the bedroom, you sat down with a hiss. Her hands left your body and she quickly walked to the bathroom to get some stuff for you wound.
âTake your shirt off please and lay down.â You heard her voice a little clearer now and you did as you were told. Laying on the bed you mind drifted back to the moment you got stabbed. Even though it hurt like a bitch, a small smile grazed your lips at the thought of having saved her life. Honestly, youâd do it again in less than a heartbeat.
A dip on the side of the bed, made you open your eyes to look at Natasha. She was focused on cleaning you wound, as soon as the disinfectant touched your tender skin you couldnât help but draw a sharp breath in.
âIâm sorry, but we have to clean it. Iâm sorry.â Nat sounded terrible. Well, her voice was still beautiful, but it was laced with worry. You couldnât help but scan her face.
Her brows were formed to a frown and her lips kept moving, apologizing repeatedly. Moving your arm without thinking, your fingers settled between her brown and smoothed the skin there.
âItâs okay. It just hurts.â You tried to reassure her, and it seemed like your touch was working. Her hands stilled and she moved into the touch of you hand. After two or three long breaths, her eyes moved to your face.
âIâm done. You should get some rest now and tomorrow weâll clean it again.â
âWhat about you? Are you hurt?â you couldnât see any wounds but you had to be sure. With a soft smile she answered.
âJust a little dirty from your grenades. Iâll take a shower and then go to bed as well. Rest, your tired, I can see that. Close your eyes, okay. Good Night.â
And with that she got up, gathered all the medical equipment, and moved away from the bed. Sighing you gave up the fight and finally closed your eyes to fall into a deep slumber.
 Opening your eyes, you looked around. It was still dark outside and you could see Natasha sleeping in the bed opposite from you. Realizing you woke up because you had to pee, you started moving into a sitting position.
A soft groan left your lips, but quietly so you wouldnât wake up Natasha. Moving fucking hurt. After getting your left leg off the side of the bed, you slowly moved the rest of you body to follow. A couple of hisses later and you were standing, albeit shakily, but you were standing up.
âWhat are you doing, y/n?â Hearing sheets ruffle, it was only a couple of second later, that warm hands found their way to support you.
Guilty, you looked up âSorry, I didnât mean to wake you, but I uhmâŚI have to, you know, pee.â Your were thankful it was dark, the proximity of the woman was bad enough but her trying to help you use the toilet, which you were sure she would do, made you blush like an idiot.
âAlright letâs got.â She said matter-of-factly. Â Without meeting her eyes you nodded and started walking towards the bathroom. You dreaded what was about to happen. You didnât want this woman to see you pee, that was a 5-year relationship step.
To try and make this a little less awkward, you tried to crack some jokes. Honestly, you just wanted to hear her laugh. She was quiet, and not the âI am tiredâ-quiet but the âI feel guilty because you got hurt because of me and now Iâll help you however I canâ-quiet.
But she didnât even move her lips. There was no amusement, and she was definitely not in the mood to laugh. It made you a little sad but also you were worried. Natasha needed to know that you did not blame her in any way. It was not her fault.
The rest of the torture of using the toilet was spent in silence. Just when she helped you lay down, did you grab her hand before it moved too far away.
âNat, this isnât your fault. Stop beating yourself up, okay. Iâll be fine. And just so you know, getting sworded was on my list of ways to get injured anyways, so check.â Your thumb drew patterns on her hand but she still didnât look at you. âNat, please. Smile. I really need you to smile right now.â
There was no reaction. She didnât look at you and she didnât move either. You realized your words wouldnât get through her thick scull so you did the only thing you could.
You shuffled towards the other side of the bed and pulled her with you at the same time. She was hesitant, but she slowly followed your lead and laid down beside you.
There was no touching except your hand on her lower arm, still drawing patterns. It was silent except for the sound of both of you breathing.
You felt at ease, there was no pain. All you could feel was her laying next to you. That was everything you have wanted for the past year. But this was not how you imagined it. You didnât want her to feel guilty or sad. You wanted her to enjoy it, just like you did.
âWhy did you do it? You couldâve let him just stab me. Why would you jump in the way?â her voice way quiet, hard to hear.
Now you were angry. Was she serious? It was not like you expected her to know about your feelings for her or the fact that you would literally die for her, no. But you did expect her to know that she means something to you and that you would protect however you could.
âAre you serious, Nat? I mean all these years of training and you canât figure out why I took a fucking sword for you? I did it because Iâd rather die, than see you get hurt. There is literally nothing on this fucking planet that I wouldnât do to protect you. And if you havenât figured that out by now, you are stupider than I thought possible.â
Okay, whew. That was maybe a little over the line. But you couldnât help it. At this point, she shouldâve known that you would do something like that.
Movement to your left startled you a little bit, especially when all of a sudden you were looking up into those beautiful eyes you regularly dream about.
âI know why you did it, because itâs the same reason why Iâd do it for you. I canât see you get hurt, okay. Especially for me. That is not an option, because if you think that you would die before something happened to me, I would murder every single human being on this planet to make sure you wouldnât get hurt.â
You didnât know what to say. Did she just say, she felt the same way? Wait, did she just say she would annihilate the human race to protect you?
âWow Nat, every single human being? That is a lot of people, you know. Need some help with that?â
Finally, you saw her lips move up in a smile. Finally, she was responding and fucking finally you felt like this might be the beginning of something. But before you could say anything else, she took the word.
âYou are an absolute idiot.â With a final smile, she moved to grab you face and softly pressed her lips to yours. It was a soft kiss; she didnât want to hurt you. But you could not get enough. It was like a fire erupted in your core and you moved to pull her even closer.
Pushing up, the kiss got more forceful. It was like a year of pent-up emotions all pouring out into this one kiss. One of her arms moved down your side, careful to not touch your wound, as she slowly pulled away.
Keeping her as close as you could, you smiled brightly at her.
âThis was awesome, can we do it again?â with a soft chuckle, Natasha pressed another soft peck to your lips, before moving away again.
âAs soon as youâre all healed up, okay. For now, letâs just sleep.â
âokayâ you whispered softly. Slowly Nat moved to lay her head on the same pillow you were laying on. Taking your hand and intertwining your fingers she pressed a soft kiss to your cheek.
âAnd donât think just because this is going on, Iâll go less hard on you in training. This has no influence on any of that.â
âI wouldnât have it any other way.â
Content and happy, you closed your eyes with the feeling of the redhead cuddled in your side. Fucking finally this was happening. Fucking finally, you had someone, fucking finally you had her.
Headcanons for an au where NeoGriff regains his emotions and seeks Guts out?
Man, yk the thought of NGriff suddenly regaining his emotions is hard to wrap my brain around. Like if he is emotionless, or nearly so, right now and then suddenly gets them back all at once?
tbh idk if heâd seek Guts out. honestly my number one thought is that heâd want to die. And not even like, out of guilt, like because he thinks he deserves it or anything, but more just because he wouldnât be able to handle having feelings again. Like heâd definitely feel guilty but he wouldnât want to kill himself to assuage that guilt, but rather to escape it. In these circumstances, from his point of view, continuing on to fulfill his dream would be a self-sacrificial attempt to assuage that guilt, while dying would be a selfish escape.
Imo having feelings again suddenly would make his dream feel even more important, because heâs done even more horrible shit on the road to achieving it now (including breaking the world so that his utopia needs to exist for anyone who doesnât want to get eaten by a dragon lol). So I think what heâd be most likely to do is exactly what he has been doing, but now barely managing to keep his shit together.
Also consider: suddenly having a heap of trauma from being tortured for a year dumped back on him, just as raw as it was when his feelings were frozen away.
And of course thereâs his feelings for Guts. Who definitely thinks heâs cruel now lol. Honestly if he did seek Guts out I think it would be to kill him, or be killed. As nearly-emotionless NGriff he was fine existing in the same world as Guts and pretending not to care, but now I donât think heâd be able to stand the thought of like, Guts hating him, basically. And probably the result would be âbe killedâ because if even Femto couldnât kill Guts NGriff suddenly dealing with all his feelings again definitely couldnât lol.
Now Iâm wondering what would happen if like, when Griffith got his feelings back, Guts was right there. Like say he had a magic plan to bring Griffithâs ~soul~ back and was waiting for it to take effect. OOOOOH. How about Griffith, about two seconds away from a breakdown, blaming Guts for his weakness and impossible to handle emotional turmoil, screaming âYou should have died!â Kinda like how Guts fixing Casca had all that ominous foreshadowing, âwhat will she do if she does get her sanity back?â etc, fixing Griffith would also not be a good time for anyone. I think things would be really dark honestly.
Like if Guts brought his soul back or whatever Griff might understand that Guts doesnât hate human him. But by now heâs a few steps beyond the love is all you need happy ending we couldâve got in a Golden Age AU imo. I think basically his 2 options are to die or bottle it up as hard as humanly possible and keep pursuing the dream. Idk if I can imagine a happy ending out of this lol. Even if Guts was willing to do or say anything to get one, which is pretty unlikely bc he has a ton of painful feelings rn too, I canât really think of anything that would work. Mmmaybe Guts offering to join him again in Falconia, helping achieve his dream? But I donât really think he would, and even then I think Griff would still be light years away from being capable of dealing with being in love with Guts on top of everything. Might be an interesting starting point though.
Ooh, or maybe Guts destroying Falconia with no hope of restoring it, leaving Griffith with nothing else to turn to but him. Maybe Guts defies fate with magic brand powers by restoring Griffâs feelings and this shoves the world off-track and cuts Griff off from his magic fate powers. Or maybe getting his soul back completely nerfs him. Or maybe his immunity to and calming influence on apostles is taken away and they destroy Falconia and now heâs got an army of apostles obsessed with him and able to do something about it. Whatever works to ruin Griffâs life again. Though this would be griffgutsy, but not exactly a happy ending lmao.
Itâs like, Guts makes Griff fall in love with him, destroys him, destroys his dream, refuses to die, then just when Griff thinks heâs in the clear on account of being an unfeeling demon with no weaknesses Guts shoves all his weaknesses back into him but ten times worse now and destroys him and his dream again. Like at that point Griffith would just give up lol.
The way Iâm envisioning this it would be pretty damn dark, rather than romantic and hopeful. Iâd emphasize the hell out of the emotional nightmare this is for Griff lol. Guts finally gets Griffithâs undivided attention because he razed every safeguard Griffith put in place to protect himself from that love to the ground. Fuck enemies to lovers style love/hate, you canât beat I hate you because I love you style love/hate. And I mean as much as Guts loves Griff heâs still pretty dark in canon and his feelings would still be mixed in this situation imo, he might get a lil thrill out of destroying the idyllic paradise Griffith chose over Guts, and making him feel everything heâs done, and finally getting him to look at him and only him after heâs spent years in pursuit of him and tried and failed to get over him. This could totally be fucked up on both sides. Hand in unloveable hand.
ANYWAY thanks for the ask, and sorry this isnât really a fun positive answer lol, Iâm too caught up in Griffithâs self-destructive feelings and convoluted ways to make griffguts fucked up.
I think I could actually more easily imagine Guts and NeoGriffith living happily ever after than Guts and a fully emotional again Griffith who remembers making the sacrifice and being Femto lol.
#ask#b#anonymous#headcanons#canon continuation#character: griffith#god i love depictions of love as a horrific experience so much#no wonder i love berserk#ship: griffguts#yk usually i'd say that despite all the complications and issues love would prevail and they'd live happily ever after together#but that take ends where the golden age ends baby i get to do whatever i want post-eclipse
Ahh.,. Pukey Saeyoung anon again.
I wanted to take a moment to extend all my love and sympathies to those last few anons. I completely understand those insecurities. But youâre all wonderful people and the rfa would definitely love you no matter whatâŚ
Your response to that very last anon high key made me wanna cry lol.
I also have never once been asked out. And the only person who ever admitted to having feelings for me was like, 1,000 miles away and âstopped liking me after she got to know meâ lmaooo
I never know if maybe some people have had interest in me before and Iâm just too autistic to notice and have too many trust issues so I push them away without meaning to. Or if people are genuinely just. Completely uninterested in me. đ
*I* think that Iâm pretty fun and special and funny and sexy.
But Iâm definitely kinda a strange antisocial type of guy lol.
Iâve also definitely spent a lot of time wondering if I would ever actually realistically end up with Saeyoung if I was in the scenario of his route..,
Bc I know that if I was in that apartment with him and he started acting coldly and trying to push me away. Iâd get hurt a little too easily. And my borderline personality disorder would kick in and Iâd probably start pushing right back. đ
That combined with my complete and utter lack or experience or comfort with any even remotely romantic scenarioâŚ
Realistically Iâd probably get a bad ending shdhdhdj.
But Iâd like to hope that weâd figure things out⌠that weâd be able to understand each other enough to push through our respective defense mechanisms. I have so much love in my heart for Saeyoung Choi. I think I might be able to do it for him.
Idk if a day will ever come where I donât feel mad insecure though haha.
I feel like it's easy to be insecure and afraid of a lot of things in life if you haven't hit the so-called milestones that are expected of you. If you aren't able to fit every life experience people expect out of you for whatever reason by a certain age in life, you feel like a failure and that you're not good enough. It's like if you're not able to get a date, a kiss, a job, go to college, finish a legacy by the age of 25, or what have you.
There is a rush to do everything or else you'll miss out. It's wrong to teach because that's not how life is. You don't need to have every bit of life planned out. Everybody gets to experience something for the first time at a different time. Just because you experience something at a different age than a peer doesn't mean you're failing.
It just means that your experience is different. Say your friend got their first kiss at 16 but you get yours at 22. Is that failure? No. You just had a different experience than theirs. You have a full life ahead of you filled with all kinds of experiences. Some things might happen sooner and some things might come later. That's the way it goes and it's okay if it's later in life. You aren't missing out and you haven't had a moment of failure.
Even if you can rationalize that it's okay to experience things at a different time in life? I know that doesn't take away from insecurities or fears or anything that you're going through. You don't have to be happy about it every day. You don't have to put on a fake smile when you know that it's exhausting. You are allowed to be disheartened in life. But, don't give up on yourself or assume that you're failing. Don't think you've done anything wrong. Don't count yourself out when you haven't found the right place right.Â
I can say this much to you. With communication, love, compassion, and faith in your relationship, you can put in the work to make things work.
No relationship comes easy. Everything is built off of communication and boundaries. You Don't Have To Love Yourself To Be Loved. It might take a little bit of work to make things smooth over with your dear Saeyoung, but itâs not impossible. Do you love him? Do you have faith in that? If the answer is yes then you can make this work. Give him time. Give yourself time.
A realistic situation in Mystic Messenger would be messier and harder to navigate than what our default MC can do. MC doesn't react like many of us do because it is made to be romanticized and work out every time. So, yeah, it would be different if you were in the apartment. But don't assume that means that you couldn't make it work. You can.Â
It might look a little different than the idealized form that you see in the game but that doesn't mean that it's any less of what you dream of. You can be happy with him. He can be happy with you. As long as you have faith in that, you can overcome a lot. You can make it work as long as you are trying your best.Â
If nothing else, be aware that he is just as insecure and afraid. He's not going into this knowing that things are going to be okay or even being confident in himself. So I think if you take a little bit of a step back you could see that you're not the only one who's afraid of this going wrong. Love is messy and tough but it is also beautiful and wonderful.
If you believe in it and he believes in it, this can work out just like you want.Â
I hope that one day you can look in the mirror and feel good about yourself. Even if it's only for a second. Even if it's only for a minute. Everybody deserves a chance to see themselves and actually like the person that's looking back at them.Â
The tldr; is simply that if you love them they will love you.Â
Live-Action Herc
This movie will most likely be a disaster. There, I said it, that out of the way. Also, I will be throwing a little extra shade in this post, because this is my way of playing worst-case scenario.
MEG
I donât trust modern writers to pull of Meg in any good way. These days it seems nobody can understand the difference between sardonic wit and unkindness, so Meg will probably be insulting people left and right for no reason, which of course weâre supposed to laud her for, bc sheâs just a salty queen, right? Yeah no. I want a nuanced Meg, like I had in the original. I want Meg with a dry wit and a hopeless situation but a good, if hardened, heart. Actually, getting Meg who is indebted to Hades and yes, needs help, needs saving, is going to be dubious enough. Because heaven forbid a woman is anything but completely in control *sarcastic*
HADES
Heâs an icon. I love him. I also donât know if Iâm going to like any new version of him that Iâm given. If heâs skinny, I riot. Thereâs a preoccupation in movies these days (although people would die rather than admit it) in having every character be a very specific kind of attractive--which for guys, often ends up placing them smack-dab between slim and BUILT. I think a Hades who looks more like the cartoon version, whoâs fat and has a sharp nose and grey skin would be attractive. (*certain exclusions may apply, as even with these traits I may not find the specific actor attractive* *good characterization may balance out physical attractiveness in this event as well*) Also, I love his loud personality, because a lot of Disney villains are threatening in a more subtle way. Hades knows heâs powerful and heâs very obvious about knowing it.
HERCULES
Hercules is BUILT. Thatâs kinda the point of Hercules. But heâs still a pretty gentle man, and I fear what modern writers might do to him. Gentle women are written poorly enough; gentle men havenât been written well since Aragorn. *for legal purposes, I am kidding* But heâs not all quippy and sarcastic, like so many male superheroes are, and I love him for it. A gentle man wins my heart much more quickly than a guy who makes obnoxious jokes at every chance he gets. Also, his love is what defines him. His love for Meg is what saves them both. His willingness to risk his life in the impossible hope that he can save her life saves both of them. A man like that is a rare find in modern cinema.
Also, if they make the romantic plot something about Herc being a real player until he meets Meg, at which point he decides to mend his ways, I will scream. That trope is so played out itâs not even interesting anymore.
VISUAL EFFECTS
They gotta pay their artists well for this one, and give them reasonable deadlines, because there will end up being a lot of visual effects. Cerberus, the Hydra, Hadesâ hair--these are all things that cannot be created without at least some computer input. And if the movie is not aesthetically pleasing, or if it looks jarring or fake, Iâm not going to enjoy it no matter how good the plot is. If it makes my eyeballs and my brain want to crawl out of my skull and die, the plot cannot save it. In short, I donât want it to look as lackluster as She-Hulk did. I want it to be a cinematic masterpiece. Maybe use some practical effects, because those are underused and underrated in modern Hollywood as well. This movie should be pretty, because itâs a fantasy-type story about heroes and gods and great deeds and for Peteâs sake such high subject matter should be beautiful! AND FINALLY, THE APPARENT TIKTOK VIBE
If the dialogue is as such that the characters say things like âyeetâ or âbestieâ in normal conversation, Iâm done. Thatâs not how people talk in actual conversations with each other. There is a legitimate difference between online dialect and in-person dialect and if the makers of this movie fail to grasp that, itâs going to be the kind of cringe that gives me secondhand embarrassment just from watching. And believe me, that makes me so uncomfortable I will not go back to watch the movie ever again. The characters should talk like regular fricking people.
Also, if there is an excess of TikTok dancing, I may cry.
Basically, TikTok provides short videos. They are meant to be short videos and short videos alone. These are not designed to provide an enduring experience like a two-hour-long movie. They are designed to grab you for the brief amount of time before your attention span fails and you move on. Trying to extend TikTok energy into a whole movie? Not gonna work, because that goes against the fundamental principles of what TikTok was made to do.
yess thank you for letting me ask you about the lore >:3c so I have to get my absolute favorites outta the way firstâ what kinda lore and thoughts do you have for sorbet or gelato ( <- before they get together and the earlier years of them getting together if you need a specific period ) I have to also ask are you ok if I go down the âlineâ and get your thoughts in other asks about the rest of the la squadra babes? Thank you sm đđ I hope youâre having a wonderf day/evening
Ah! Now this is one of my absolute favourites! Apologies to anyone who has already heard me ramble about my Sorbet and Gelato backstory ad nauseam on multiple occasions, but this is really an area where I can't help myself. Besides, this is my opportunity to go more in depth where I haven't before:
(Note after writing this: It's stupidly long. I'm sorry I just can't help myself with these backstories. I couldn't decide what to leave out so I decided nothing.)
(Also please feel free to ask me more lore questions because I love doing this)
We'll begin with Sorbet, born in Naples in February 1967 if you follow the canon timeline (although by default I write in modern AU so move the dates 20 years later). His situation at birth was absolutely dire, the eldest child of an incredibly vulnerable woman and one of her clients as a sex worker. Sorbet's mother was by all means a decent woman but her severe mental illness and drug addiction made it impossible for her to be a good mother, which of course had a bad effect on Sorbet growing up. After Sorbet, she had 5 more children, all through clients, and Sorbet was saddled with much of their care.
Though he loved his siblings, Sorbet was pretty much done with this life by age 12 and was easily swept up by older boys from the local street gang, who paid him well to peddle drugs when he should have been in school. This was a very underfunded neighbourhood so nobody questioned his truancy, and within the next couple of years he had stopped going to school entirely. Shortly after this, having acquired sufficient money through his crime involvement, Sorbet left his family to stay with his new friends, moving between them on a regular basis. He also discovered his sexuality around this time and dated a few male friends, though none of these relationships got very far.
By age 16, Sorbet had earned a reputation in the street gang for skilled and passionate violence, and was selected by the ringleader to commit the group's first planned murder, in exchange of course for a lucrative reward. Sorbet accepted, succeeded, and became the group's de-facto assassin whenever needed. He continued to hoard considerable money for the remainder of his adolescence, though continued to be functionally homeless since he didn't see it necessary when sofa-surfing was suiting him fine.
Before resuming with Sorbet, let's explain the life that Gelato came from. Gelato was born in October 1967 in St. Petersburg, Russia, (Note- I previously used the city of Minsk, unaware that this is in fact, in Belarus) to an upper-middle class businessman and his Italian wife, a distant relative of French Monarchy. Gelato's relationship with his parents was rocky from the start due to the fact they would have preferred a girl after three successive sons, but any parental love they had for their youngest child broke down entirely after he was diagnosed with both Autism and ADHD at age 5, in an evaluation intending to find the cause of some behavioural issues that were really, just a response to emotional neglect.
When Gelato was 13 he, his parents, and two of his three brothers (the eldest was already an adult by this time and elected to stay behind) moved to Italy to escape some allegations of corruption in the father's business. They moved to a rural village in North-West Italy where the community was very middle-class and quite stifling for Gelato, who had enough social rules to remember in the familiar, economically-diverse city he grew up in. His behavioural issues got worse and began to include things he would later regret, such as attacking and stealing from younger children, and things he would absolutely not, like attacking and stealing from teachers. By this point the family had largely written him off as a failure, revering instead their academically successful, well-behaved older children, which absolutely contributed to the spiralling cycle of behaviour issues Gelato faced.
Then, at age 17, Gelato failed a crucial exam and was expelled from high-school. His parents kicked him out on the spot, and with no other family in Italy Gelato had very few options on what to do next. He recalled, however, one older friend having links to a street gang in Naples, and decided to see if this boy might have a route out of destitution for him. Indeed, the friend did know of a man in Naples needing assistance within the gang, but could offer no help in getting Gelato there. Seeing no other way, Gelato walked the whole journey.
Arriving in Naples, the friend's associate announced that the position Gelato was after had been taken, but taking pity on his distress, informed him of another friend who needed someone to look after an unlicensed bar that served as one of the group's main meeting points. He agreed to arrange for the small apartment above the bar to be given as payment.
Gelato accepted, but although he had now solved the problem of homelessness his life was still incredibly miserable. For one, with his pay being the apartment he had to rely on measly tips to get by, which rarely left him with enough to eat let alone anything else. Additionally, as an outsider with little understanding of the way gangs work Gelato was an easy target for abuse, and was treated like absolute shit by the bar's patrons.
By this point in time, Sorbet had just turned 18. He was, incidentally, in the same gang Gelato had joined, and a regular at the bar he worked in. For a good couple of months they took no notice of each other, until Sorbet came to be in a coincidental feud with one of the men who was violent to Gelato at the bar. When Gelato witnessed the two of them in a fight, he made the spur-of-the-moment decision to join in on Sorbet's side, knocking the patron unconscious and leaving him too afraid to visit again. For his trouble, Sorbet gave Gelato a portion of the money he looted from the fight's loser, and flirted with him lightly before going about with his evening. Unknown to Sorbet, he had just sent Gelato falling head over hills in love.
Gelato found out about Sorbet's sexuality from other patrons and, delighted, attempted to flirt with him the next time they saw each other, but his attempts came off very poorly and Sorbet actually thought he was being insulted. Angered, he dragged Gelato into the cellar to demand what was going on. Gelato, terrified, admitted having a crush, which Sorbet found to be the sweetest and most genuine thing he'd ever heard. While he couldn't promise a relationship, he did agree to show Gelato more attention in the future. But, it was only a matter of days until Sorbet found himself loving Gelato back.
This whirlwind relationship continued happily for three weeks, Sorbet greatly improving Gelato's situation through his saved money and helping him fend off the abusive patrons. Gelato, in turn, offered Sorbet a permanent place to stay in the apartment, which he accepted. Sorbet was in the process of moving his things, and they had plans to refurbish the place to make it actually habitable.
But then, everything came crashing down. One night the bar was subject to a surprise raid by the police, operating by the false assumption it was empty. Sorbet and Gelato attempted to flee but were caught, and in a panic, Gelato shot a policeman dead. Rushing to his defence Sorbet killed two more, but a fourth escaped to tell the tale. The couple knew they were screwed. Running to the headquarters of their gang they begged for protection but were informed the small group simply could not save them from a charge this serious, and gave them only a single night of shelter to plan their next move. Gelato, who remember had never committed anything more serious than minor ABH before, had an absolute breakdown over this predicament that night, and whilst comforting him, Sorbet devised a blood pact with him to stick together no matter what came.
Over the next few days, Sorbet and Gelato fled north, avoiding the police through Sorbet's skills as a criminal and Gelato's very convincing Russian tourist impression. They were almost at the French border when Sorbet awoke one night to find Gelato missing behind him. He chased his tracks to the driveway of a rural house, a tearful Gelato clutching a knife at the shut door and trembling. He informed Sorbet that he had intentionally led him to the village where his family lived, with the intention to break in and kill them as revenge for the years of abuse. Sorbet warned Gelato that this would not be good for their attempts to flee, but said he understood fully and would help him if this is truly what he wanted. Gelato agreed, and together they broke into the house and slaughtered Gelato's mother and father, additionally killing one of his brothers after he woke from the noise. The other brother, the youngest other than Gelato, was spared, as Gelato felt his role in the abuse had been comparatively more minor and he did not deserve to die. This of course, left another witness.
The massacre in the village was quickly linked to the one at the bar and Gelato was promptly identified from a comparison of DNA found at the scene to his surviving brother's. Sorbet, a known criminal, was identified soon after. Not only were the pair now known but the police figured out what their plan was and informed the French police as well, making things exponentially harder for the couple.
They made do for a while by hanging low and keeping on the move, living off money stolen from the parents' house. Eventually however, they needed more, and began making deals with local crime organisations to carry out assassinations in exchange for money or temporary shelter. While Sorbet was already a pro at this, Gelato found himself a fast learner, and soon realised he shared Sorbet's adoration for the act of killing. He felt as though he was finally coming to meet his true self.
Though the assassination deals were lucrative, they did not help the couple keep a low profile and the attacks from police were relentless. Several times, they barely escaped capture. All this was not good on their mental states, and after two years, Sorbet knew it needed to end. He and Gelato returned to Naples in the hope their old gang might reconsider protecting them, but they were met with a surprise as their old gang had been completely overtaken by Passione. Even still, the new mobsters had heard a lot about Sorbet and Gelato's exploits and agreed to get them an audience with a local Capo, Pericolo, who was impressed by the men's skills and moved by the sense of honour suggested by their love for each other. He agreed to initiate them into the gang.
Soon after this, Sorbet and Gelato recieved stands which, although not very powerful, assisted them greatly in the art of assassination. Soon, they were natural choices for Passione whenever a hit needed carrying out in the Naples area. At some point a few years in, they befriended a man named Prosciutto who had been recently forced into Passione due to his heritage. Prosciutto was also funnelled into assassination jobs and, with less of a reputation for impulsivity than Sorbet and Gelato, was the one given the order to form a new assassination squad when the need arose, around 1993 if we're following canon.
(Note, I hc La Squadra was created by Passione in response to a real life government crackdown on the Italian mafia around 1992-93, in response to an incredibly scandalous series of assassinations. In such a climate, it would make sense for Passione to want to consolidate an elite squad of its best hitmen, do avoid future problems.)
Due to personal commitments Prosciutto did not want to be the captain, so attempted to give this responsibility to Sorbet, a request the boss promptly denied. Prosciutto was, however, allowed to add Sorbet and Gelato to the team's ranks, cementing the three of them as the first members of the team.
Prosciutto would, soon enough, find another person to give the title of captain to, but that's a story for another time.
What are the epithet erased folks like when they're drunked?
Oh ho ho ho this is going to be fun! ( alcohol and drunk Tigger warning though)
Molly: No. No. No. No. no alcohol for the baby. EVER! Percy doesnât even anything that even looks like it get close to her and her young still forming brain!! the others have kind of an unspoken rule about it to. SHES. JUST. TOO. PURE.
she hasnât told them that her dad used to let her drink pumpkin spice beer at thanksgiving yet.
Sylvie: Donât tell percy but Sylvie drinks wine the most respectable and classy of all adult beverages when heâs at office parties. The others are reluctant to let a 15 year old do it but he insists heâs more then responsible enough. Itâs purely to study the complex flavors anyway (heâll never admit it but they all taste like expired cough syrup to him) not to get totally inebriated for the sake of it.... that part happened on accident. It only takes about one glass to do it and He goes into beef beef sheep mode but as a drunken out loud ramble. He comes up with alot of âground braking theoriesâ when he gets like this too. He was once convinced that motion wasnât real itâs just an illusion our brains cook up to help us cope with our frozen world!!! Heâll just keep rambling and hiccuping for hours every once and a while admitting something very very embarrassing like How he doesnât know what half the big words he uses mean or that his coffee is actually just chocolate milk until he eventually passes out on top of a pile of very tipsy sheep sucking his thumb.... which is usually fallowed by a visit from a very very glitchy beefton Who has fish fins for some reason because drunk dreams apparently arenât as stable as regular dreams.
Giovanni: Gio doesnât even really like alcohol (mostly because of Debby) but sneaks into bars every now and then because underage drinking is a major crime!! He canât stomach anything unless itâs drowned in sweet strawberry staved ice or a million different juices and of course a tiny umbrella and it only takes one of those to get him waisted... His whole face flushes totally red even his ears! Heâs somehow even louder and more obnoxious then usual! Dancing on tables swinging form ceiling fans yelling at strangers who donât tip or harass The bar tenders and getting into fist fights with them which he usually loses (making out with crusher that one time) his few inhibitions completely out the window along with the Barâs jukebox.... itâs the only time heâs ever committed any kind of real crimes. Then on the second on he just Starts maniacally laughing and crying at the same time. Its actually pretty scary to witness so thank goodness Bear trap ainât around. Until It eventually just becomes crying about all the mean stuff he did and how great it is but how itâs awful too and how he doesnât wanna be mean but you have to be mean to be a bad guy so does that mean he doesnât wanna be a bad guy? and really feels like he should have taken that four year baseball scholarship to the cityâs top medical College!!
Mera: Sheâs a little harder to get waisted mostly Because she has to be really careful not to brake the fancy glasses her drinks come in. When she does it only makes her get more grumpy and makes her start scream ranting about how terrible life is and how terrible people are and just how much everything and everyone sucks all the time... expect for Indus
her affection for him is turned up a hundred fold sheâll throw herself on top of him and nuzzle into him like a kitty squeezing his muscles! Sheâll ramble on about how heâs the handsomest sweetest person in the history of ever and how she doesnât deserve him and just wants to kiss his big dumb face and from there it trails off into.... pg 13 territory untill she passes out and a very red faced indus has to carry her home.
Indus: Indus is also pretty hard to get drunk since heâs so huge itâs only ever happened once. It was from one to many of those wooden pints of ale at this theme bar because of course it was. Everyone there thought he was an actor or something and kept asking for selfies because he kept singing broken warrior drinking ballets and challenging people to drinking contests which only made things worse. After winning about 5 he couldnât say too words without braking into giggle fit or hiccuping his head off. It would have been kinda cute if he hadnât also lost all motor control, completely forgot how strong he was and smashed almost everything and everyone he came in contact with. He hugged about 7 people into the hospital, smashed a hole on the bar. and then tried to fight a forklift. But he probably would have done that last one anyway.
Percy: (aka the one youâre all waiting for) Has only ever taken a drink once in her life. Ramsey thought Champagne would be a good way to celebrate after closing a big case together... he has never regretted anything so much. She took one sip and she was immediately completely intoxicated a Drunken delinquent unable to control her own actions or the already rapidly forming addition she was suffering from. But she would work as hard as she could to get sober and decided to check herself into the nearest rehab center. He tried to stop her but she was determined to go strait there but she wouldnât allow herself to operate a motor vehicle under such conditions so she decided to walk there right through the middle of heavy traffic. Once again totally unable to control her rash decisions. He eventually got her to come back thankfully without getting hit. Only for her to run straight into a stop sign. She got back up again immediately and acted like nothing was wrong even though blood was pooring out of her swelled up nose! He tried to take her to the hospital but she insisted on staying to defend her honor again the offending sign as irrational displays of strength was a common drunken activity. But electrocuting it was probably not the best idea since it sort of acted as a lightning rod and fired the underground wires the ran underneath it blacking out the next 5 city blocks. The video of the whole thing when viral and Percy uses as an example of the dangers of alcohol For the kids.
Ramsey: The man can afford freaking gold laced Champagne but chooses box rosĂŠ in the basement watching Adam Sandler movies like the king he is.
But somehow with out fail he will always always always wake up the next morning in the master sweet of a yacht he just bought with a bunch of passed out strangers half of which are furries in a giant pile of money totally unable to move his face because of the back ally Botox he got done. wearing nothing but his boxers, gold chains with a little gold rats on them, and solid gold crocks still holding that box of rosĂŠ....
Zora: Weâve done drunk Zora art here before sheâs pretty much exactly what you would expect downing whisky and beer left and right just to see how far she can go!! Her competitiveness goes through the roof and sheâs challenging anyone to anything darts, arm wrestle, poole, russian roulette, jump rope, anything she was one of the said people Indus got into a drinking contest with and the only one he lost too! She really isnât that much different then her usual self since she drinks pretty regularly and has the highest tolerance out of everyone.
extra because I had too!!
Howie: It seems like its impossible to get him drunk. His worker bees get him to try and loosen up a little because like it or not he needs it. But heâs already downed 10 giant beers and seems totally the same.... until he gets a call about a new job gets up and walks right through the wall of the bar leaving a Howie shaped hole behind him.
Zero To Play podcast episode: John Epler, Narrative Director at BioWare
In the most recent episode of Zero To Play podcast the guest was John Epler, Narrative Director on DA4. He talked about narrative games, how they fit inside an industry leaning towards games as a service, his experience being at BioWare for almost 14 years, and advice that he has for aspiring devs who want to create memorable, impactful and transformative moments in games.
The episode summary read as follows:
In this episode John brings his 13+ year experience being at BioWare and working on titles like Mass Effect & Dragon Age: Inquisition to explain how he believes storytelling will evolve and develop through the medium of games.
He shares some of his favorite moments and why he thinks games are the most powerful and interesting medium to be exploring in this generation.
Itâs a good and interesting interview, so worth checking out if you can! You can listen to it here or on Spotify.
This post contains some notes on what was talked about in the episode, in case a text format is better for anyone (for example folks that canât listen to it due to accessibility reasons). Itâs under a cut due to length.
A bit of paraphrasing.
The average dev stays with a game company/studio for about 5 years. John joined BioWare right after the EA acquisition happened.
[on going into Trespasser] âMyself and the Lead Writer Patrick Weekes both knew that we needed to wrap up at least this part of the Inquisitorâs story, and set up where we want to go next with the franchise, with the IP. We learned a lot of lessons from DAI itself. DAI was a game with a lot of exploration and open-world content, and while we stand by that (I still think it was the right call for the game), one of the pieces of feedback we got from the fans was that they really wanted some more directed storytelling. Jaws of Hakkon was more of a continuation of open-world, more free-from exploration and free-form design. Trespasser was our opportunity to tell a story in a much more linear and focused way. [this way of telling stories] really does help to be able to create that sense of pacing and emotional escalation. Itâs a lot harder to do that when youâre mixing up storybeats with big, wide open-worlds. Trespasser was a project where everyone was kind of in sync, we were all building [towards] the same thing.âÂ
-
âThere were [story]beats [in Trespasser] that I don't think we would have been able to get away with in basegame DAI, one of those being the - quite frankly - incredibly lengthy conversation you have with Solas at the end. Because by this point we knew that if someone is playing this DLC then they are in it -Â theyâve been in it for the last two DLCs, theyâve played through the entire game, they want something incredibly story-focused. And we were able to really dive deep into that, some of the deep lore, some of the narrative. This was one of the only conversations that Iâd worked on which, due to limitations of the engine, we actually had to break into two different conversation styles because it was so massive. We also got opportunities to do some fun callbacks. One of my favorite ones was one Patrick suggested which was, âWhat if I [didnât like Solas much and] spent the entire basegame telling Solas I didn't want to hear anything he had to say?â So we had the option that if you never chose âInvestigateâ or a dialogue option that implied that you wanted to hear him blather on, there was one dialogue option that you could pick which was basically âSolas, when have I ever wanted to hear any of the shit you have to say?â And it just kind of wrapped up the conversation super quickly, and Solas looked exasperated. It was fun because itâs not the kind of thing you can necessarily do in the main game, but in a DLC which is entirely for those core fans, you have a lot more options as to what you can do.â
John has an understanding of games as an interactive medium.
âChoice of combat, choice of mechanics, all of that does have an impact on the storytelling and on the narrative that youâre trying to put through. A lot of storytelling in games is trying to make sure that the - thereâs a phrase, ludonarrative dissonance - [for example, say] Iâm making a game where Iâm trying to make the player feel powerful. How do you [do that?] [...] In games, this is kind of the challenge. Interactivity is so key to it. [...] Itâs a lot harder [compared to characters in film] to put the player in a situation that they are going to lose, because as soon as you take away that autonomy, youâre taking away some of that interactivity. [...] If as a player I'm making you feel strong and powerful, and then I pull you into a cutscene and suddenly youâre losing the fight, youâre losing whatâs going. That is a much different sensation, that is something movies can get away with that games canât.â
-
âWhat are [players/our audience] actually meaning when they say that they âwant choiceâ? I think that in a lot of cases we conflate that with âOh, they want to make a big decision that changes the worldâ. But in a lot of cases what players want is the game to react to what theyâre doing and the choices that theyâre making in a way that feels organic and natural. I think this is something CD Projekt Red and the Telltale games did really well - of making it clear when the game is actually going to pay attention to what you said or did, so that when you see it later youâre like âOh right yeah, I made that choice, the game said it was going to remember it, and it remembered, this is coolâ.
And it doesn't always mean completely changing the course of events. The Telltale writers, as they got on through the games, they realized that the better way to address choice - and something weâve done too - is, if we make the game have three endings, four or five - like DAO had an absolute massive amount of ways that it could turn out. How do you pay that off if you want to do a sequel? There's basically two choices. One is that you make an incredibly short game because you have to account for these very different branches, OR you collapse them and say âSorry, this is what weâre going withâ. And I don't think either of those are necessarily satisfying. For me itâs about making the players feel like their time and the choices they made have been respected. More than anything else that's the key, it comes down to understanding your fanbase, what it is theyâre looking for, what it is theyâre asking for, because there is that desire for choice, reactivity, consequences. And itâs something that BioWare, that weâre especially sensitive to because itâs always been a big pillar of the games we make. Itâs just about understanding what this actually means from a practical standpoint and how you execute on that in a way that makes your fans feel satisfied, while still not writing yourself an impossible check to cash, because, you know, you can react to anything, but if you have a game that ends in three separate ways, you have to go with one of those two options and neither of them is going to be intensely satisfying to the player.â
-
âA phrase Iâve been using is, what I'm describing as - the half life of quantum. âQuantumâ is what we say when it could be like, one of six different things. The half life of this is how long before you actually resolve that down to a single point. Like, provide the player with that reactivity, but collapse those into a way that you can proceed forward. This is 100% a lesson learned from Dragon Age, for all the games. âOk, what do we do with this? Holy shit, that is huge, how are we actually going to pay that off?â Reactivity, but without putting yourself in an impossible-to-win situation [from a story/writing standpoint].â
-
âMore than anything else, the advice I would give [to aspiring devs] is, come up with some fundamental pillars of your story and of your design. There's a misunderstanding that we plan out the exact story for years in advance. We know what we want to get to, we kinda know how weâre going to get there, and a lot of it is just making sure that you have those pillars and those razors. So as you go through development and find, âOh this piece is not working, this piece is clunkingâ, youâll always have principles that you can go back to. What is important about this story? Does the piece that isn't working satisfy any of those things? If no, then we have to change it or get rid of it.â
-
[more advice] âDonât be afraid to fail (I say fail here as a good thing). Don't be afraid to put something out there and have it absolutely torn to shreds. Feedback is your best friend, having people that you trust to provide that feedback. If I were building a big epic narrative, a big epic franchise, [Iâd advise that you] start with your principles and the core of what you want to do, and then just start putting out ideas. âHereâs my idea for this storyâ. Itâs easier for me, I'm inheriting a lot of work that's already been done, a lot of ground that's already laid - I have a Lead Writer that has been doing this longer than I have, PW is fantastic. But for myself, itâs just been a lot of like, okay, taking this stuff that's already been built, and making sure that I know what we want to do with whatever the next project is. It sounds overly reductive and overly simplistic, but it really is about just having a really strong sense of what is important to your franchise, whatâs important to your brand. If youâre coming up with a new IP, itâs a little trickier. You need to spend some time thinking: whatâs the tone, whatâs the setting, what kind of story do we want to tell.â
-
[more advice] Donât be afraid to heavily reference existing media [as actual razors, internally]. But that's not something you ever want to have go out to the public, because people go like âOh, youâre just being derivativeâ. Itâs like no, weâre just leaning on cultural touchstones that people know, so that when youâre communicating with people outside your discipline, or with people above you like executives, they can at least get a sense like, âOh I kinda get what youâre doing, okay that makes senseâ, versus âLet me first of all explain the entire history of the worldâ. My experience with executives is that they don't have time for that and justifiably so. But if I tell them weâre doing X but with Y and Z itâs like, âOk cool, we get thatâ. [...] Itâs a tiered approach. You have levels of detail that you provide to different people based on what they need to know. You yourself may need to know the history of these characters and how they relate to each other and the thousands of years of history for that, but the person building combat probably doesn't need all that detail and just needs to know âWhat am I working with, how do these characters fight.â
-
âA razor is a statement that you use to slice away what doesn't fit. The narrative razor for Trespasser was, I canât remember exactly, we were basically trying to go for the Avengers meets Indiana Jones, Winter Soldier. Avengers meets Winter Soldier. [a razor is] a statement that you take all the content [by], âOkay, does this actually fit this statement? No? Okay, get rid of itâ. Itâs about focusing your game. Cutting away the ideas that don't really fit is how you avoid scope-loading and people crunching, and how you keep your project focused.
Trespasser was an intensely-focused DLC, in that it focused on basically two main core things, Solas and the fate of the Inquisition. Everything kind of wrapped into those two razors. As we were going through content, we had stuff like - I said this at a GDC presentation in 2016 - the Qunari are farming lyrium to make Qunari templars. And then we looked at it like, how does that apply to either razor? It doesn't, it doesn't fit either one of them. So we simplified it to, âOkay, what actually makes this work in the context of what weâre building?â. [a razor is] a statement that you use to slice off what doesn't fit into the game that youâre building. It can be painful, but having strong razors means that it never comes across as a personal thing.â
Narrative does not mean story.
Two of his least favorite mechanics in games [not including Stalker and DayZ] are weight limits and weapon degradation.
On games as a service:
Interviewer/host: âTalking about games as a service, itâs definitely something that is talked about a lot in gaming in terms of the most successful games. With Dragon Age, putting DLCs out is kind of maybe that same influence, but games that are launched and then iterated on and updated and pushed with content every month, like Fortnite, Riot Games, League of Legends, Valorant etc, that's kind of I feel where the trend of games are trying to go and make the most of those interactions between other people, to make replayability possible and easier. How do you see narrative, do you see it being forgotten with this increase of games as a service? [...] Do you see that as a positive part of narrative in games or do you think thereâs still work to be done in that space?â
John: â[...] The place we start to see some confusion, a lot of people think itâs one or the other, but to me, itâs another way, another option for telling stories that by their nature have to be different. I think that's where you need to be, again, very cognizant of what youâre building and of the genre youâre working in, because a story that works for a more traditional box product is not necessarily the kind of story that would work for a games as a service product. [...] Games as a service, understanding what the cadence is that youâre planning to deliver to and what kinds of stories best fit that cadence - some games are better at it than others.
One game that did a pretty decent job of it is Destiny 2, through patches. Final Fantasy 14 is another example, they do a lot of their storytelling between the big expansion releases as part of their free patches. They always know that they have - I think, five big patches? - between each expansion, and theyâve structured their stories to fit into that very specific five-act structure. If they tried to do it weekly or bi-weekly it would be a very different experience. I think thereâs always room for narrative. Itâs about knowing that there are different lessons to learn and not being afraid to learn those lessons, as opposed to trying to fit the traditional box product square-peg narrative into a live service round hole. And thatâs why you need to have a strong vision and why you need to have somebody at the Director level who understands and plays the kinds of games that youâre building, so they kind of understand what works and what doesn't -Â âThis type of story worked really well for this game, and I'm not saying you should copy it, but you should at least be willing to learn those lessons and not reinvent the wheel every time.â
Weâve been making games for a long time now, thereâs lots of lessons to learn, we should be trying to learn from them and not trying to like, change everything every single time.â
-
[on length of narrative] âIn a lot of cases you know how long your game should be and the hardest part is sticking to that. [...] There is always a worry that fans are going to see a number and be like âThatâs not big enough or thatâs not long enough.â I do think that there is sometimes a lack of confidence in what you're building, and a desire to make it shorter or longer, but I think at the core, the people building [a] game know how long itâs going to take to tell this story that they want to tell. I say this specifically for narrative, but even stuff like progression, you know how long you want it to take. For myself, I will always take a short but well-executed game over a long game that feels that it has a lot of [useless/boring] padding. Itâs about identifying the kind of game youâre building. Open-world games are always going to be bigger and longer than more linear games. Being confident in that number and recognizing when youâre adding time and space for no other purpose than just to make that number on the back of the box longer [is important]. Fans donât love that, they can see right through that.â
-
âIt was nice to see the amount of hard work that went into DAI rewarded by the press [with the Game of the Year award]. There are definitely parts of it that didn't land that we wish we could have done differently, but it was a project that felt like we were all pulling in the same direction and when we started getting that positive feedback, it was definitely a sense of relief. Especially because a lot of us had been on DA2, and while we were proud of that project, it obviously didn't get the reception that we wanted at that time.
[when they were watching DAIâs release and tracking its reception] Weâre keeping a running tally, like âOkay, this is really looking like we did something special hereâ. Iâm proud of every project that Iâve worked on but DAI is definitely one that Iâm especially proud of.âÂ
âPart of the advantage to being at a company for as long as I have, I've worked with a lot of the other people [responsible for things in other departments like art, writing, audio etc], so while there is that anxiety like âI reeeally hope that this works outâ, I know itâs going to, because I know that everyone who is doing these roles, like our Animation Director, our Audio Director, Levels, all those other people on the project know what theyâre doing and they know their shit better than I could ever hope to. So Iâm just kind of standing here like âHey yâall this is what we needâ, and itâs coming in. And when it does come in, when you see the pieces together - I think for myself, on DAI, the moment that I first finally started feeling like it was really all coming together was, one of our music designers, going into one of the moments at the end of Redcliffe, doing the music/audio pass, and me finally seeing this scene that Iâd been staring at and banging my head against for months - turn into something that actually conveyed emotion, that actually was something that I was excited for our fans to get to see and get to experience. Thatâs always a special feeling.â
Cinematics is one of the last things to come in, which means that audio is always waiting for them to come in: âThey always did an amazing job with very little time, I will never not praise our audio and music designers.â
âPatrick Weekes is the Lead Writer, which means ultimately PW is responsible for the writing side of the game. As Narrative Director, Iâm there to offer, to basically take the vision of the project and interpret the part that focuses on narrative and then provide that to my team - because I work with writing, cinematics, level designers and everyone - Iâm there to be like âHey this is the narrative we want to achieveâ, which sometimes involves getting involved in the story side of things. But a lot of that is PWâs job as Lead Writer, theyâve been doing it for a long time, theyâve been in the industry longer than I have. Itâs a really good working relationship. We worked together when I was in cinematics and they were in writing, we worked together on the Iron Bull, then we were both leads on Trespasser, so we have a trust.
I think whatâs been really helpful is that they know that if I tell them somethingâs not working, itâs not coming from âI wanna do it my way, you better just do it my way because Iâm the bossâ, itâs coming from âThis is something I think we need to do for the projectâ. And vice versa, if they push back on me about something, I know itâs not coming from âScrew you I'm the Lead Writer, I make the decisionsâ, theyâre saying it because this is an actual concern. I do writing, Iâm a writer on the project too but I will fully admit PW is a way better writer than I am, so I'm comfortable leaning on them for that stuff, and then Iâm the person who can provide that âOkay, we know that gameplay is providing this, we know levels is providing this, letâs shift the priorities'.
Itâs also about knowing, being able to take that back from any one discipline and say âOkay, what is the right decision for the project as a wholeâ, and sometimes that means telling PW something that they may not think is their favorite thing to do, but they will listen because they trust me and I trust them. I don't know how it works at other studios, there are places where Narrative Director is also the Lead Writer, or where there is Narrative Director and Lead Writer is the highest authority on narrative that exists, but itâs worked for us again because we have that lengthy experience. It would be interesting to see how it would work if we didnât know each other for a while before this. Itâs largely a relationship of trusting each other to know our areas of expertise and also just understanding whatâs important to the narrative vision of the project.â
When they did Tevinter Nights it was âextracurricularâ work: âIt was fun, I got to do some writing, I got published, which was really funâ.
