I've always found it an interesting tidbit that Poe was raised by Shara's father during the war and wish we had more information on him considering he's most likely passed by the time of Freefall. I'm also curious as to where Poe was during those years considering it wouldn't have been Yavin-4. I'm just eager for more info about the Dameron-Bey family as a whole.
I've always wondered about Shara's father! I wish we knew more about him also, like - even just a name. Soule, how about instead of bullying Lando for the 44th issue in a row, you give me more Bey-Dameron Family Lore, huh?
Yeah, I've also wondered about that, and we got SO close to finding out in the comics. The Empire - or at least, Tarkin's apprentice - knew what planet Shara's father had Poe on, because she threatens Poe and Shara's father to make Shara talk (which can I say, the Empire has done a lot of fucked up things before, but I think that one might be one of the things that floored me the most. Threatening a barely one year old child's life just to make his mother talk...what the fuck).
It at the very least implies that Poe is a space baby, which I love so fucking much because the concept of space babies is my FAVORITE thing in the absolute world, and I think it really adds more depth to the "I belong to the stars" line if Poe was genuinely born amongst them, and I can't be certain but I do believe around that time, the Rebellion was mostly just living on cruisers and didn't have a set planetary base yet.
Yeah, me too! I'm so curious about so much like - clearly Kes and Shara weren't part of the Rebellion when they met. iirc they meet around 3 BBY, and then of course the tlj visual dictionary mentions that Shara's wedding ring is made out of scrap from the rebellion and I'm like. I NEED to know about these two and how they went from a fucking one night stand to pRESUMABLY joining the Rebellion together and then at some point going FUCK IT we're getting married WHILE serving in the Rebellion like HELLO. I NEED TO KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT THESE TWO. GIVE ME A NOVEL ABOUT THEM LIKE WE GOT FOR KANERA, PLEASE. LUCASFILM. LUCASFILM PLEASE. AND GIVE IT TO BETH REVIS WHILE WE'RE AT IT.
#ask box#galacticwildfire#bey dameron family my fuckin. beloved.#you know that family is absolutely amazing when kes and shara just individually are ALSO some of my favorite characters in sw.#like i'm so curious when did they join the rebellion? WHY did they join what prompted it? when did they decide to get married? WHERE was#poe born canonically? how do they only have one kid as often as they fuck.#who is shara's dad what's his name what's his like does KES have any family i get the vibe that he doesn't really#i always like to think tho that shara's dad was a member of the church of the force#no canon basis really. i just think it's neat.#dameron family#at this point i'm only reading the current sw run for them.#i'm getting scraps#but it's enough to keep me from rage quitting

okay i know technically Crepus week is already over but i want to start sharing a bunch of my Genshin headcanons on here so I'm pretending i'm totally not late and jumping on the bandwagon by starting with him so let's go
Fatui Crepus Headcanons
(including how he got the delusion, why the Fatui assassinated him, and how he met his wife)
(adapted from some ideas i had for the AU i have with @applesandcecilia that i decided i liked enough to make them part of my canon universe hcs. we named Diluc's mom Selene for that so that's what I'm going with it's a pretty name)
Hopefully this makes sense? I always feel like halfway through typing these kinds of things out that it just kind of devolves into rambling and a bunch of meaningless nonsensical crap. I swear my headcanon lists aren't going to be this long normally this just got weirdly intensive.
Word count: 2,025 (there's also a TL:DR at the end if you're curious but don't want to read I have no idea how this got so long I've written actual complete fics shorter than this)
The Ragnvindr clan has always been a clan of heroes. From the rebellion against the Decarabian all the way down to Venessa's rebellion, wherever great things in Mondstadt happen, you can expect that a Ragnvindr will be there. So naturally, from the moment little Crepus could even pick up a toy sword, he was training to be a knight.
While their son spoke much of his plans for joining the Knights of Favonius, Crepus' parents had other plans in mind. They had been unable to have more than one child, and as the sole heir of the Ragnvindr clan, were relying on their son to carry on the family's thousand-year legacy of the Dawn Winery. They dismissed Crepus' dreams of knighthood as nothing but foolish childhood daydreams, and offered very little support in his efforts.
As Crepus got older, however, his need to participate in the protection of Mondstadt only grew stronger, especially as Abyssal monster activity increased. But in addition to a lack of support from his parents, he also lacked the physical strength he needed. He had been a sickly child, often in bed with a fever or other illness, and although no healer could find anything specifically wrong with him, it was obvious to everyone that even in times of health he was weak, struggling to run as fast or as far as the other children.
Crepus did everything in his power to overcome his physical challenges, but when it came time for the squirehood tests at age 12, he struggled greatly and was rejected. He continued to try every year for the next four years before finally accepting his fate at age 16 and agreeing to begin studying with his father to prepare for taking over the winery. He took well to his new duties, but he was still dissatisfied and restless.
During his training and attempts to join the Knights, he had caught the eye of the Captain of the 8th Company who offered to take Crepus under his wing. He found that the captain provided the support and encouragement he was missing from his own father, and the two became very close. Unbeknownst to him, however, the captain was also serving the Fatui, and, believing that his repeated disappointments would leave him open to suggestion, the captain approached him soon after his final rejection with an offer to join the Fatui.
At first Crepus was taken aback at the revelation that his mentor was acting as a Fatui spy, but it didn't take long for him to grow used to the idea. The Fatui, as the captain put it, was really no different from any other military organization in Teyvat. Even the Knights of Favonius often operated in the gray zones of morality. What really mattered was the results. The Fatui was going to destroy the Abyss, and if Crepus wanted to help protect Mondstadt and participate in a great cause, he needed to be a part of them. The Knights of Favonius weren't willing to work with his weakness, and the gods refused to recognize all his hard work and ambition with a vision, but the Fatui could see beyond all that. In fact, they could even make him stronger -- a delusion, they called it. The power of the elements right at your fingertips without having to wait on the fickle minds of the heavens.
Ultimately, Crepus agreed, and before long he was provided with a delusion, a rank, and a code name -- Brighella. It felt odd for a while, operating in secret, communicating with an organization that had been deemed an enemy of Mondstadt by so many for so long, but he was doing something, and more importantly, it was making a difference. Through the missions they sent him on, the Abyss monster activity took a sharp decline, and children that had once been kept inside by their fearful parents returned to the streets, happy and carefree. He even began using his position as the Dawn Winery owner's son and its associated business travels to take his efforts to the other nations, and he was quickly promoted and commended by his commanding officers.
Surprised they had even managed to recruit a high society Mondstadtian, Crepus' commanding officers were careful in their use of him. They kept him away from Snezhnaya and as disconnected from the main body of the Fatui as possible, focusing him on Abyss related plots in fear that being involved in more intensive Fatui matters would let his nobility get the best of him. But Crepus' enthusiasm for his newfound calling was an opportunity that couldn't be missed, and the more he accomplished, the deeper they pulled him in.
By age 18, Crepus was recognized as a full fledged Lieutenant in the Fatui, leading his own Special Forces unit in secret comprised of other non-Snezhnayan agents and spies. His mentor's words about the Fatui's results had largely proved themselves true as well; crime in Mondstadt and the other areas his unit operated was at an all-time low, and Abyssal activity continued to fall similarly. But the price of his successes was higher than Crepus realized. Though his superiors remained careful enough to not arouse his suspicious, they found that his position in Mondstadt gave them access to valuable information that he gave willingly, not realizing the importance of what he knew, and he gradually began taking missions more and more blindly, not realizing he and his unit were being used in increasingly nefarious schemes. Before long, Lieutenant Brighella's Special Forces unit had become one of the most dangerous branches of the Fatui, primarily due to just how few people even knew of their existence.
Eventually, Brighella and his unit became a point of interest for an underground network of anti-Fatui intelligence and rebellion, and realizing just how powerful the Fatui could become if they expanded their efforts, they sent one of their most powerful members to capture the Lieutenant: a young Hexenzirkel witch named Selene.
Expecting a cold-hearted, ruthless Fatui brute, Selene was quite caught off guard to find a charming, lighthearted, clever young man, who was even so bold as to outright flirt with her as she made her kidnapping attempt. There was an instant chemistry, and Crepus took the confusion it caused as a means of escape, thus thwarting his would-be captor.
Selene tried again many times after that, but Crepus found a way out every time, and somewhere along the line, the pair found their respective attempts at capture and escape rather half-hearted, instead using them as excuses for playful banter and even eventually meaningful conversations.
As Selene came to understand Crepus' reasons for joining the Fatui, she realized that he was completely unaware of the way his commanding officers had been manipulating him, and her attempts at his capture were soon replaced by more earnest attempts to get him to see just how bad the Fatui truly were. And as Crepus begin to fall more in love with Selene, he started to see past his youthful need to find meaning in his life through the Fatui, but didn't fully realize the magnitude of his mistake until one fateful day he would never speak of again.
Selene almost panicked that day to find Crepus at her doorstep, bloody, breathless and terrified, but her resolve soon took over and she put her magic to use in concealing him from the Fatui and ensuring that so long as she lived, they could never harm him.
Determined to do everything he could to right his wrongs, Crepus turned himself in to the Grandmaster of the Knights of Favonius -- his newly-promoted childhood friend Varka -- fully prepared to serve prison time for his treachery.
Though distraught by the news of his friend's betrayal to Mondstadt and concerned at how far he had been misled, Varka truly believed that Crepus' heart had been in the right place, and ultimately made the decision to keep his records sealed and privately pardoned him for his crimes.
Shortly after, now a little over a year after their first meeting, Crepus proposed to Selene. Unaware of what their son had been doing in secret for the past 3 years, Crepus' parents were confused and upset by the news of his engagement to a woman they had never met, so they were forced to elope. With no place to stay in Mondstadt due to his parent's disapproval, they decided to volunteer in Selene's network for a time.
Two years later, Crepus finally reconciled with his parents. He returned to his duties in preparing to take over the winery, and for once in his life, finally began to find joy in them. Pleased by this, and now eager for Crepus to settle down with his wife and start a proper family, his father decided to retire and pass the Winery on to his son early.
Though all was well for a time, and it seemed as though Crepus had successfully escaped his past, shortly after giving birth to Diluc, Selene fell sick with a rare disease, and while she recovered from her symptoms well enough to begin caring for their new baby, she was informed that she could no longer have any more children as she had hoped. Over the next few years they sought help from the best healers in Teyvat and even Selene's Hexenzirkel sisters, but her disease continued to progress and she passed away when Diluc was only five years old.
Beyond his devastation at losing his wife, Crepus once again had to worry about the Fatui. The Hexenzirkel provided some protection for him, but without the constant presence of a witch in his home, they were still somewhat vulnerable, and now he had a son to protect. Although they had wanted to destroy it altogether, Selene was worried what the consequences of doing so would be, so they decided to hide Crepus' delusion in Dragonspine. Despite his promise to her to never touch the dangerous artifact again, Crepus retrieved the delusion a few weeks after Selene's funeral.
His determination to protect his family only grew after taking in Kaeya, and while he was never forced to use the delusion, he often carried it with him, particularly while traveling. He debated for many years about if or when he should tell his two sons about his troubled past, worried that simply knowing about his life as Brighella could put them at risk. He finally decided that when both boys were 18, he would have the difficult discussion, but before Kaeya could join his brother in coming of age, Crepus was killed in the incident on Diluc's birthday.
With no letter left behind from Crepus and no instructions given on what to do in the event of his death, Varka debated on whether or not to tell his sons about his Fatui involvement, but before he could make a decision, Diluc suddenly left Mondstadt and Kaeya renounced both his inheritance and ties to the Ragnvindr family. Feeling that it would not be best to try to find a way to inform both boys at that point, Varka kept Crepus' records sealed, even through the investigation of his death and Eroch's removal from the Knights
It wasn't until Diluc was saved from the Harbingers by the same network his parents worked in that one of the members recognized him as Crepus' son and told him the story of his father's past and how his parents met. Diluc then recounted the information in one of his few letters home to Kaeya, and despite the initial shock of the information, both boys found some peace from it. Diluc had finally found the truth he so desperately sought, and was pleased to learn that so many, even those who knew of his darker side, had considered his father to be a truly good man. And Kaeya, still struggling with Diluc's reaction to his revelation of his own troubled past, found a sense of comfort knowing even his adoptive father he looked up to so dearly had secrets, and that perhaps he may have accepted the truth about the son he had taken in after all.
TL;DR: A mentor convinced Crepus to join the Fatui after he got rejected from the Knights and had to be dragged out of it by a Hexenzirkel witch that worked in the same network that saved Diluc from the Harbingers

Hey girl could please we get some hc’s for rebel pilot reader and luke friends to lovers??👀🫶
Hiiiii dear anon! This is such a sweet ask and I'm so here for this scenario🫶🏻
also serious probs for coming up with something Luke related I didn't already talk about lol
• assuming you've been with the rebellion for longer than Luke, he'd catch your attention as soon as he arrives
• and to say you'd be intrigued, would want to know more about the newcomer, is a mild understatement
• luckily you aren't the only one feeling this way by far; stories are told and rumors spread all over the place
• about his person, his origin, his looks, etc., every single one of them more absurd than the last
• and while none of them are mean spirited in any way, they definitely serve for a more than welcome distraction from the ongoing terrors and tensions
• (quite possibly this is the reason one or two or maybe more among the rebels have a good time making up some crazy things to stir the pot)
• the first time you're able to catch a few shreds of information is during meal time and of course you can't help but join in on the wild discussions, speculating about the what if's and whether what you've heard is true or not
• while pretty unsure about what to believe you have to admit that yes, these are crazy times, so why should it be too preposperous to encounter someone straight out of a cliché hero story?
• naturally you can't wait to finally see and meet him for yourself, and so you're immensely surprised when Princess Leia's savior turns out to be just some dude your age
• even more so, when after some precise assessments, he seems to be the very opposite of what the stories suggest him to be
• like, you're really supposed to believe THIS GUY escaped The Death Star after encountering The Darth Vader?
• absolutely wild
• of course your disbelief is nothing personal, you know better than to judge a book by it's cover; your time fighting alongside different species did certainly teach you as much
• after all Skywalker is here, willing to fight for the same cause you pledged your life to
• you heard about his great piloting skills as well and surely, in time, he'll have enough chances to prove himself
• plus he does seem nice enough
• it's just- he's so...
• you don't know what you expected
• but certainly not this puppy eyed, long lashed, gangly-limbs-everywhere guy with shiny locks to die for and a voice just slightly too loud
• when you overhear one of his conversations for the first time you are barely able to keep from snorting out a laugh as he animatedly compares the feat of destroying the Empire's biggest weapon to shooting animals on his backwater planet
• is he being serious?
• you're not sure what to make of his boisterous claim, nor where it stems from
• naivety?
• arrogance?
• it's possible the two of you had already exchanged a few words prior to this but now you decide on putting serious effort into speaking to him more often
• you want to get to know this guy, even if it's just for finding out that you're better off ignoring him
• maybe, for what it's worth, to put him into his place and to teach him a little lesson
• though soon you are very glad you gave him the benefit of the doubt
• as it turns out Luke, as you call him now, is very easy to approach and to get along with
• his smile as well as his enthusiasm are very contagious and much to your surprise you find yourself immensely enjoying his presence
• because of his open and curious nature you quickly discover shared interests, as well as likes and dislikes and benefit greatly from each others experiences and knowledge, especially when it comes to flying
• Luke is like sunshine personified and quickly you find it hard to imagine your daily life without him as his smile and warm presence always help to brighten your mood and ease your mind
• you didn't think so before but you actually really like listening to him talk, like to sit quietly by his side while he goes off on a rant or animatedly tells a story
• soon you view him in a whole different light than before, realizing that your first assessment was indeed, not quite right
• and as the awkward and inexperienced farm boy unfolds his depths right in front of you, you grow to admire his compassionate strengths greatly
• what starts off as lighthearted and easy comradery, evolves into a heartfelt friendship, fueled not only by the circumstances but a mutual understanding as well
• you make for a great team, able to trust each other blindly in training and during real skirmishes against the Empire's forces
• always he brings out the best in you and you seek to do the same
• it keeps both of you going, plays a major role as you work on improving your respective skills together
• may it be through friendly competition, sharing tips and tricks, hyping each other up after a particular good manoeuver, bragging about achievements or just helping the other with restoring their x-wing
• it's hard to pinpoint the exact time when the switch flipped, hard to figure out how all of a sudden feelings and the longing for something more evolved
• when did you stop seeing your best friend when you looked at him?
• when did he become so desirable?
• when did your innocent love for a friend turn into more?
• neither of you can tell, not even later, after rushed confessions in the hangar and first kisses after returning from an especially gruesome fight
• you tend to think about it a lot in hindsight, seek to remember that one moment of clarity while you lie awake at night, too giddy to fall asleep
• maybe your feelings were there from the very beginning with only your circumstances preventing you from realizing
• or maybe this was just the way things were supposed to develop, the only possible outcome after everything you've been through together
• in truth though, it's not that important
• being with Luke is simple in the best way possible, always was
• you're in love and it doesn't matter whether you fell slowly or all at once
• whether you quickly recognized the feeling for what it was or needed time to do so
• maybe the Force wanted you to take it slow, to really know the other, to experience them in every way possible, before sinking into their arms

Hi! I absolutely love your fic Misfortune, and I’d love to hear more about the universe surrounding it! I’ve always been curious about the dynamic that was hinted at with Erik, Pietro and Luna, from what we saw it seemed very nuanced!!
I'd really like to start by saying that I'm so glad Misfortune resonated with you! It's tied for my favorite work I did for House of Dadneto 2024, and I hope that if there's a 2025 event, I'll be able to live up to my work in 2024. I also want to say that I adore A Quiet and Starry Place and am excited for any upcoming chapters!
Within Misfortune, I tried to capture the idea of people's words, actions, and beliefs not completely coinciding. Whether it be Wanda claiming not to care about Erik outside his relationship with Pietro while still visiting him (albeit on the astral plane) or Erik denying that Luna's birth and humanity has any impact on him, while joining the X-Men for that very reason. I also tried to show the breakdown of communication within the family unit, and how that only leads to more pain.
When Pietro got married to Crystal, Erik wasn't there. He never truly got an answer as to why, though it was mainly due to Erik being a fugitive after his failed rebellion after the attempted assassination of Charles Xavier. Crystal's pregnancy was announced soon after the wedding, and Erik seemed to be excited at the prospect of being a grandfather again. He gets along with Crystal, although he only visits twice during the pregnancy so Pietro and Crystal don't get in trouble for meeting with a fugitive. Even though Crystal is royalty, he doesn't want to risk anything.
Pietro wants Erik to be proud of him, he wants to have a good relationship with him. To Pietro, having a relationship with Erik and considering him his father alongside Django is both possible and okay. He considers Django his father, and Erik as his father as well, one does not cancel out the other. Wanda has a harder time reconciling the two, so she uses Pietro as an excuse to get closer to Erik, as she doesn't want to betray Django, Marya or Magda. That's one of the reasons he still hasn't met Billy or Tommy. That and the fact Wanda's afraid they'll get hurt if anyone finds out about their relationship to Erik.
When Luna is born, and born human, Pietro is afraid.
He's heard what people say about his father, and seen the things his father has said and done when it comes to coexistence with humans. He doesn't think he'll harm Luna, but he thinks that he'll ignore her, and that he'll pretend that both she, and he, don't exist. Crystal encourages him to tell Erik about his doubts and fears, but he doesn't, he only tells him his daughter is born human.
Truthfully, Erik never considered this.
He figured she'd either be born mutant or inhuman, and either one was fine with him. But to be baseline? That wasn't a possibility.
Pietro waited to tell him until he was already holding Luna, but the second she was placed into his arms, Erik loved her. He saw his own eyes-the eyes of his son- staring back up at him, and blonde hair that's a perfect mix of that of her mother and of her father. She was perfect, and he'd do anything to make the world safer for her.
But then, Pietro fearfully told him she's human. Only a moment later he took her back, afraid of what Erik might say. While Erik's loved many humans, that's not what he's known for.
His granddaughter will grow up hearing all about how Magneto fought against the humans, and she'll think that he doesn't love her. He does love her, but at the same time, she's human. He can't really reconcile the idea of his granddaughter being a human. She just can't be, yet she is.
While he doesn't believe in the possibility of true human-mutant coexistence, he does believe in her; and making the world safer so that Tommy, Billy, and Luna Maximoff can grow up unafraid.
He couldn't live with himself if she was afraid of him. He can't live with himself while his son is afraid of him.
He would destroy the world at the drop of a hat, but he'd keep it safe for his grandchildren. Human and mutant alike. He'll try coexistence if only to make Luna happy. It doesn't mean he won't fight for mutants with the same vigor he always did, it just means he'll try to live alongside the humans and advocate for peace.
He'll try it, just as he'll keep his promise to an old friend.
So, he packs up his meager belongings, and joins the X-Men. Not only for Charles, but for his children and grandchildren too. Perhaps this way he can prove to his son, his granddaughter and even himself that he hasn't already damaged his relationships beyond repair. He remains aware that every move he makes is being monitored, not only by the UN, but by his son too.
When word reaches Pietro that his father has joined the X-Men and has been saving humans and mutants alike, he sends him a gift. A way to let him know he still loves his father, and wants to maintain their relationship. Because Erik hasn't talked through any of this with him, he doesn't know how his father feels about Luna, or if joining the X-Men has any correlation at all. A few days later, Wanda decides to visit Erik in the astral plane.
As for the gift, I have my own opinion on what's inside; but I worry that whatever answer I give won't live up to what the individual reader thinks is inside. If you want to know what I originally wrote to be in it before letting it be ambiguous, let me know, and I'll reveal it and it's significance to Pietro as a person.
I hope this in-depth examination of character motives makes sense, and thank you for reading this long! I've always found Magneto to be a very interesting character, so I knew I wanted to do a character study to open House of Dadneto. In fact, this was the third fic I wrote for the event, but the first I posted. I had already written Polaris and Acceleration, Tangential Speed and the Practicality of Fatherhood when I started planning out Misfortune!
I've also considered following more of the X-Men 97 plot through the lens of this AU, but I'm not sure if I'll end up doing it or not. I have plenty of ideas when it come to Episodes 3, 5, 8, 9 and 10.

You have some of the best takes on the events that happened in Silmarillion and I wanted to know your opinion/stance on something. Do you consider Fingolfin an 'usurper' when Feanor and Finwe left in exile? Because as someone new in the fandom (there's honestly a lot to unpack), so many interpretations/takes believe he was actually trying to usurp Feanor (*sighs* typical feanorian apologists/followers). I myself didn't see him as a usurper, I thought he was taking the initiative to become a leader because his father (I understand Finwe was well-loved more than Indis, but he pisses me off on so many levels, dude was so bad at being a dad, he should've never desire for more children if he's going to neglect them in the end) joined Feanor (eww favoritism) in exile and that left Tirion kingless. So why were people whining that he was a 'usurper'? I'll never get that.
Aw thank you, I'm glad you enjoy them! (*/ω\*) This book really gets my brain whirring. There is definitely a lot to unpack, and my views on events and characters has absolutely changed in the last two years since I first read the book and have had more time to re-read it and reflect.
Fingolfin as a usuper is a fanon notion and it's not one I buy into. I think it goes hand-in-hand with the take that Feanor and Fingolfin are both equally responsible for the state of their relationship, which is not true. Feanor began this, Feanor escalated it, and Feanor was the first to bring weapons and deadly threats into it. Even if Fingolfin at times retaliated or started squabbles of his own, I still see Feanor as the primary instigator of their "rivalry," particularly considering it's noted that he also doesn't like Finarfin (it's just that he sees Fingolfin, as Indis' oldest son, as a greater threat, so Fingolfin gets more of his (negative) attention).
Going under a cut because as usual I rambled lol
However, I don't really agree that Finwe was a notably terrible father. I mean certainly you can read that into it, it's just not how I prefer to read it. Finwe made mistakes, as many parents in Silm did, but I don't think he didn't love his other children or that he obviously and outright preferred Feanor to the others, and I don't see any evidence that he neglected Indis' kids. I think he followed Feanor into exile because he felt very strongly Feanor had been wronged by the Valar and wanted to make a statement about it, and perhaps he felt he needed to be even more vocal in taking Feanor's side throughout his life because of what happened with Miriel (particularly given Feanor's tendency to view himself as the victim already). It is also relevant to note I think that they were most likely all adults when this happened, so it's not that he was abandoning minor children.
Was it irresponsible to leave Tirion kingless? Yeah, totally. Right after their crown prince was exiled for publicly threatening the life of his own family member? Bound to be a chaotic time in the city (relative to the past, not to things to come :')) Finwe is someone who I can see being a little myopic--he's not always good at seeing alternative perspectives once he's staked his own out and it causes him not to see the consequences that might come of his actions. But character flaws like this are what make them interesting to me, because it makes me curious how one as beloved as Finwe nevertheless ends up making several crucial mistakes that help set the stage for the rebellion of the Noldor.
As to Fingolfin, I think his willingness to forgive Feanor--and Feanor's tacit rejection, or at least failure to accept--says a lot about the state of their relationship. Now you could argue Fingolfin was just doing a PR move--even that he knew or suspected Feanor would not accept his forgiveness, which would make Feanor look completely unreasonable next to Fingolfin--but I tend to think he was genuine, because I think Tolkien would have said or hinted if he'd done it with an eye towards his own image.
First, when Feanor is first brought before the Valar for judgement for threatening Fingolfin's life, and it is revealed that he has been influenced by Melkor, there's this:
"...and Mandos said to him: '...for twelve years thou shalt leave Tirion where this threat was uttered...But after that time this matter shall be set in peace and held redressed, if others will release thee.' Then Fingolfin said in answer: 'I will release my brother.' But Feanor spoke no word in answer, standing silent before the Valar."
Even here, where Feanor is on trial for drawing a weapon on him--which has NEVER happened in Tirion--Fingolfin still refers to Feanor as his brother, and Feanor does not acknowledge it. Fingolfin, if he truly wanted to usurp Feanor, could have easily refused to release Feanor or make amends, and perhaps Feanor would have then been subject to longer banishment or other additional punishment. But he doesn't seem to hesitate to offer his release.
Then, the moment on Taniquetil when Manwe calls them all to the home of the Valar:
"Nevertheless he [Feanor] met Fingolfin before the throne of Manwe, and was reconciled, in word; and Fingolfin set at naught the unsheathing of the sword. For Fingolfin held forth his hand, saying: 'As I promised, I do now. I release thee, and remember no grievance.' Then Feanor took his hand in silence; but Fingolfin said: 'Half-brother in blood, full brother in heart will I be. Thou shalt lead and I will follow. May no new grief divide us.' 'I hear thee,' said Feanor. 'So be it.'"
This encounter follows a similar structure to the first: Fingolfin offers forgiveness, Feanor neither accepts nor openly rejects it. Once again, Fingolfin had his life threatened by Feanor's tantrums; he has every right here to be angry and withhold his forgiveness, but he doesn't. Not only does he release Feanor from the consequences of his actions, he really seems to be trying to heal the bond between them. Again, you can disbelieve that he's genuine here--but I read this as sincere, and I think Tolkien would've told us if it wasn't, or even if Fingolfin had ulterior motives in addition to wanting to heal this divide.
The only time during Feanor's life when Fingolfin really competes with him is during the Flight of the Noldor. Fingolfin leads the larger host of the Noldor to Alqualonde, but this occurs by choice of the Noldor, not because Fingolfin was trying to steal Feanor's following. He comes along only because he doesn't want to leave those who would follow Feanor to Feanor's whims, given how unreasonable and unpredictable he's been lately, and more of the Noldor are willing to follow Fingolfin than to follow Feanor. He could have also chosen to remain behind in Tirion, where he could have made a very easy claim on the throne--but he goes along, because he's convinced it's the right thing to do.
Part of the point of Feanor's mindset in Aman is that it was unfounded, until his own actions seem to give him confirmation he was right. If Fingolfin really had been gunning for his position, then Feanor was not paranoid, and his fears were not unfounded, and to me that undermines a central pillar of the pre-Darkening situation in Tirion, which is that Feanor was terrified of something that would never come, which Melkor took advantage of by making him believe it was coming. Feanor is afraid that Fingolfin will take his place--and by Feanor's own actions Fingolfin ends up ruling in Tirion. But Feanor doesn't see that connection in his madness--he sees only that what he feared has come to pass, even just temporarily.
"With him into banishment went his seven sons...Thither also came Finwe the King, because of the love he bore to Feanor; and Fingolfin ruled the Noldor in Tirion. Thus the lies of Melkor were made true in seeming, though Feanor by his own deeds had brought this thing to pass..."
A key phrase here is lies of Melkor. Melkor LIED when he told Feanor that Fingolfin wanted to take his place. He saw Feanor's fears and insecurities and found some lies that Feanor would be all too willing to believe, and made sure they were whispered into Feanor's ears, so that he would take them as truth.
All of this says to me that Fingolfin had no designs on the throne, that Feanor imagined or created their rivalry himself, and that Melkor simply took advantage of Feanor's irrational fears which he had never put to bed after his father's remarriage.
So to sum up this whole thing: No, I don't buy "Fingolfin the Usurper."

Sad, Beautiful, Tragic | Alicent Hightower
Four
Alicent Hightower x Targaryen!oc
64.media.tumblr.com
Their fathers sworn enemies, Viserra and Alicent should never have been as close as they were, yet it was a connection neither could fight. What began as an innocent girlhood companionship becomes something scandalous, with the bastard daughter of Daemon Targaryen showing her true colours. As the dance begins she finds herself torn between her loyalty to her house and her love for her father. Yet neither hold a candle to her forbidden love for the new queen, a love which threatens to destroy them both.

Father and I stand atop the walls of Hightide, watching the Velaryon fleet prepare to set sail.
"Why are we fighting this war father?" I ask him out of genuine confusion. "What threat can this crabfeeder truly pose to us?"
"It's not about the threat to us, it's the principle of it," he explains. "For the crab feeder to gain power and holdings so close to our shores reflects badly on our power as Targaryens. We have dragons yet we let pirates like the crab feeder and his men creep upon us. Like with rebellions, they must be put down brutally." He looks at me, almost as if he's studying me. "Did you do as I asked and see the blacksmith to have armour made and fitted."
"Yes," I answer, even if my heart pounded the entire time, it wasn't until the moment I secured the steel onto me that it became real. "Our dragons will be the first in generations to see true battle."
He has had me training with the master at arms morning, noon and night, and then with himself. Determined to give me the training I would have received if I was a son.
"They will be," he tells me. "My brother does not want to see it but by me being out here instead of sitting on my ass in Kings Landing my claim only grows stronger."
He wants it, more than almost anything he wants to be his brothers heir, except there is one problem. "The council would see it as this, if anything were to happen to you the crown would then be fought over by two girls, one a trueborn princess and the other a bastard. While I'm your heir your claim is forfeit." He's quiet as he knows it's true, even if he will not admit it. "I know Mysaria's pregnancy was a farce, but if you were to have a son I would be happy." He stills and looks at me in contemplation. "I have no desire for the throne as you do, and despite my love and loyalty towards Rhaenyra I know I cannot stop you if you decide to press your claim, but as your daughter I can only tell you the truth which is you will need a son to have any chance. I know you have always seen me as your heir but if you were to have a boy to inherit whatever you take I would be happy with that."
He knows what it is I'd be giving up if he had a son, what I would lose. He's lived his life in fear of Viserys fathering a son enough to know it. Yet he asks "You've truly never desired power for yourself?"
"I have power," I tell him. "Being a bastard with no obligations to marry or rule is more than power, it is freedom. A freedom I do not wish to give up."
He smiles. "Then you're wiser than I am."
It's then we're interrupted by Rhaenys who comes to join us. "I assume you will not be attending your brothers wedding."
"Considering I'm still in exile, no," Father answers plainly. "And I'd rather not see the look of pride on Otto Hightowers face."
I can't help myself as I ask "The wedding, when is it?"
I've been here on Hightide for the last month, acting as my fathers understudy as he and Lord Corlys have been planning their war. Deliberately away from the matters of Kings Landing.
"Tomorrow," she tells me, and her voice is curious. "I understand you and Rhaenyra both were very close with Alicent Hightower."
Father can't help the laugh he tries to supress, getting a strange look from Rhaenys. "Yes, very close indeed."
"If Alicent had it her way it would be Laena marrying the king," I try to tell Rhaenys. "She did not want this."
"And yet tomorrow she shall be queen," she says, not caring for what she wanted. "Something that should have been Laena's if Viserys didn't let his heart rule him."
I look to my father whose protective over anyone who dares attack his brother, but it's an assessment he can't help but agree with. "It has always been his weakness."
"Perhaps it has not been in vain," I tell Rhaenys, always careful with my words when it comes to her. "Laena does not yet have a dragon but all she talks of is Vhagar." She tilts her head at me. "What is a king compared to a conqueror's dragon."
"An interesting thought indeed," she says with a small smile. She had never taken interest in me until I'd arrived here at Hightide, no doubt due to my birth, but if I am being cautious I could say she's started to take a liking to me. And maybe she's the mother I wish I might have had.
She leaves us and my father looks at me, knowing my urge to set flight. "Go. You aren't the one in exile."
"And what, try to steal her away again?" I scoff. "If it didn't work the first time-"
"You love her, you'll regret it if you don't try," he tells me and gestures to the army below. "We're going to war, you might not get another chance."
~
I wear my armour as I fly to Kings Landing, armour designed to compliment my riding clothes. Red and black with steel forged in the Targaryen design like my fathers.
It would gather more stares than I would care for if I entered through the front gates of the keep in daylight, but I enter through the secret passageways in the dead of night.
Her chambers are empty when I reach them, and I begin to wonder if I should have changed into one of my gowns, perhaps the red one she loves so much, suddenly aware I reek of dragon, but when don't I? My dragon is as much a part of me as she is.
When the door opens and she enters I'm sitting on the edge of her bed, she stops at the sight of me, remaining in the doorway eyeing me with the same caution as she does my dragon.
Her voice wavers. "Are you here to convince me to run away again?"
I shake my head. "As much as I want to I've made my peace."
A lie, I've simply accepted my defeat.
"I haven't," she replies, closing the door behind her but remaining there, keeping distance between us. But I can't stop my heart nor my legs as I stand and march towards her.
"Good," I say as I reach for her. "Because neither have I."
I take her face between my hands and kiss her. She pulls away, looking at me with those big brown eyes before kissing me back. She doesn't question the armour I wear as she reaches for me, no longer timid as she pushes me against the door and breathes "I don't want to be his, I don't want him to take something I don't want to give."
There's a question in her eyes, one I'm hesitant to answer. "Alicent-"
"Please," she whispers, and I see a side of her I've never truly seen until now. "I don't want the first person to ever touch me to be him."
This isn't what I wanted. I never came to conquer her as if I'm no better than a man. I just wanted to hold her one last time.
"Do you love me?" I ask her and the question almost seems to confuse her.
"Of course I love you."
I shake my head and remove her hands from my waist to hold them. "I'm asking if you love me the way I love you." Something changes in her dark eyes at those words and my voice breaks "Please tell me you love me too."
She reaches for my face and answers me with a kiss, something so gentle it's heartbreaking, and she breathes "You know I do."
It's then I bring her hand to my armour. "Alicent, I'm not wearing this for nothing."
Her first thought is that I've come for a fight. "If you plan to spill blood-"
I just shake my head. "No. I'm not coming to start a war, I came to see you one last time before I leave for one."
She blinks at me with tears in her eyes, utterly blindsided. "No, you can't-"
"I am," I tell her and struggle to look her in the eye. "After the wedding I leave for the Stepstones."
"Why?" she asks me, her voice growing desperate as she pulls me in. "Why would you even think of going there?"
I look back up at her, knowing in my heart it's where I belong. "My fate isn't like yours, I'm not destined to marry a king or even a lord. I was born to fly on dragonback to bring fire and blood and that is what I intend to do."
"No," she demands. "I may not be queen now but tomorrow I can order you to stay here by my side-"
"I'll already be gone," I tell her, not knowing if I'll be able to bring myself to even attend the wedding. "I didn't come to fight, I came to see you one last time before everything changes."
She opens her mouth to protest before quickly shutting it, knowing there is no winning a fight with me once my mind has been made up. But something in her has changed.
"No," she insists, grabbing my face and her eyes are filled with fear. "I'm not losing you. I can't."
And that's when I kiss her, wanting to taste the fire I know we share, despite how deeply buried it may be. A fire I bring to the surface with every step I take towards her bed until her legs hit the back of it and my hands come to the laces at the back of her dress, tugging at them enough the neckline of her blue dress slips down so I can drag my lips down her neck, kissing the soft skin below her jaw all the way down to her collarbone until she's gasping out my name.
"Viserra-"
"Sit down," I breathe and she obeys, the shoulders of her dress slipping down her arms and her hair free. A beautiful mess. I bring my hand to her face as I come to stand between her legs, her dress sliding up past her knees as I run my thumb over her lips. Eyes asking me to take whatever she's willing to give, as if I was just a man.
Perhaps I'm no better than one as I kiss her and my hands tug her dress from her shoulders but it's not until I have her in my arms I'm fulfilled, not by flesh but by her.
~
We lay beside one another in the darkness, bodies bare and hearts fast. I should feel content, I should feel like a man would, but I don't. And it's a very dangerous thing as I look at her and realise I will never be content until she is mine and nobody else's. I am my fathers daughter, a jealous woman and a reckless one.
But I'll never know where I inherited my tender heart from.
"Alicent." She looks at me as I reach my hand out to her face, she's trembling now the pleasure has worn away, terrified of what awaits her tomorrow. "It's not too late."
"Please, don't," she whispers, voice pained. "Don't try to convince me to run away."
Little does she know running away with her is one of the least bloody things I would do to make her mine. "I don't want you to marry him."
She sits up, pulling the sheets up around herself and faces away from me, being utterly difficult when I could end this here and now. "It would be treason, no matter how much Viserys loves you, if you were to do this, if he were to know..."
"Do you think me afraid?" I ask her, sitting up and tucking my chin into the crook of her neck, kissing her shoulder as my hand slips around her waist to hold her to me. "I'm not. I've spent the last weeks since I left preparing for war, yet the only prospect that frightens me is the thought of losing you."
She looks back at me, confused. "Losing me? You're the one leaving court to fight a pointless war." It's then she turns everything I've said back on me as she grabs my face and pleads "Stay. Stay here with me."
"And be the queens mistress?" I ask her, hating myself, because I know I could never be content having only part of her. "Do you think it wouldn't kill me to know you'll be his? Do you think it isn't already?"
"I don't know," she confesses to me. "It's impossible to know what you feel Viserra when you come in and out of my life so erratically. One moment chasing me and the next fleeing-"
"Would you believe me if I told you love has made me mad?" I ask her, looking into her wide eyes, shining with tears. "Alicent. Ever since the moment I returned to court and set eyes on you I've been driven mad by you. Every moment I am not with you I'm aching, and the thought of you being with a man makes me blind with rage. You make me utterly senseless, can't you see that?" She's speechless as I take her face between my hands. "I don't want to have you like a man, I don't want to be a mistress, I just want to be loved by you. Can't you see that is all I want?"
"Viserra," she breathes as I kiss her and there's no more words left I can say to make her feel my love as we fall back down between the sheets, and all I know is this last night together, if I can't feel her heart I'll feel what little she can give. Anything to keep her from letting go of us.
~
She's already awake by the time my eyes open, reaching her hand out to move the hair out of my face. Neither of us say anything, we don't need to, and there's no words that could do what we feel right now justice. I lean over to kiss her, as if I could pretend for just a moment everything was fine, but just as my lips touch hers the door opens.
I jump up, sheets around me expecting a servant, expecting anyone but Rhaenyra.
She stands there mouth open at the sight of us, before leaving just as quickly as she came, slamming the door shut behind her as Alicent clamps a trembling hand over her mouth.
"It's alright," I immediately tell her. "Stay here."
She's too terrified to speak as I reach for my clothes, not bothering with the armour as I run out the door still lacing my blouse and running through the halls. I catch the attention of those walking past, not caring for anyone's theories but Rhaenyra's.
I expect to find her telling her father, but instead she stands by the weirwood tree, waiting for me.
"Rhaenyra," I breathe. "It-"
"Wasn't what it looks like?" she finishes and turns back to look at me. "I should have known. It was right there in front of me this entire time-"
"No, not until tonight," I tell her, but she doesn't believe it. "The reason I fled to dragonstone that night was because Otto accused me of seducing Alicent, a crime I was innocent of, at least until then." Whilst she is betrayed, she believes that. "And so I stole her away on dragonback so she wouldn't have to marry your father but she begged me to bring her back and so I did." She hates this as much as we do, but still, the anger in her eyes is all for me. "I just wanted to see her one last time."
"Well you did a lot more than see," she says stiffly and shakes her head at me. "The night before she's meant to marry my father-"
"And she will," I tell her, biting back the venom in those words. "As much as we both hate it, as much as she hates it, if anyone were to know the truth it would ruin her." Even she would not stoop that low. "Blame me, hate me for keeping her secret, for seducing her. I may be no better than my father but the only crime she is guilty of is falling in love with someone she shouldn't have."
She almost laughs at those words. "You know, my father would believe that. Anyone at court would. But not me." My face falls. "She is far from innocent and we both know it."
My voice is stiff. "Are you going to tell your father?"
"I should," she says, the power in her hands. "But you're right. It would ruin her. I don't know what you think of me anymore. One day we were sisters and the next you were gone without an explanation, not even a word."
"We are still sisters," I tell her, but as much as we both want to believe those words, we can't. "I still love you as my sister. That much is true."
It's then I see tears in her eyes. "How can I know that after all the lies? I needed you, but you chose to betray me and leave me standing there at the small council like a fucking idiot when they said it would be her, and when I went looking for you you weren't there."
"I'm sorry," I tell her, reaching for her but she steps away. "I just wanted to help her, I never wanted to hurt you!"
"Well you did!" she snaps at me and looks past me to where Alicent by now no doubt stands. "You both did."
I look between them, and it's then in Rhaenyra's eyes I see what Alicent thought she saw in mine. Jealousy. And I realise my father isn't the only one Rhaenyra's had eyes for. Rhaenyra's in love with Alicent.
It's then I break down laughing and both look at me as if I'm mad, and perhaps I am.
"Viserra?" Alicent says and I look around at the place the three of us spent our youth. A youth that has now ended.
"Look at us," I say, looking up at the sun. "Alicent is about to become queen, her children to usurp you as heir Rhaenyra, and me, about to go die in some pointless fucking war in the Stepstones." I smile, revelling in the pain it brings me. "That thought suddenly feels far more appealing than it did a day ago."
This is news to Rhaenyra, but Alicent's face is set in stone, and as I look her in the eye I see a glimpse of what Rhaenyra does. And for her sake I hope it's there, a conniving backbone to help her survive what's to come. A life not as a queen, but as a pawn for her fathers ambition.
I look back to Rhaenyra, not caring anymore how I leave things. Just wanting this to be over. "We're all fucked so how about we go put on our pretty fucking dresses and smile for the wedding." Both share the same look of disgust as they listen to me. "And let's drink to our ends."
"You-" Rhaenyra begins, not even having the words to do justice for her disgust and turns her back on me to leave, marching past Alicent without even looking at her, and suddenly I wish I'd done the sameas I see the utter rage seeping through her usually composed face.
"You truly are your fathers daughter."
"I am," I say shamelessly. "And you'll soon be one of us Targaryens, so welcome to the family."
I go to leave and she calls out "I forbid you to leave until after the wedding."
She may not be queen yet, and she knows it, but she is desperate. Desperate to keep me here.
"We'll see," I say and leave her there.
~
I sit in my chambers, my dragon riding gear discarded on the floor, too many wines deep to count as I watch from my window the court entering the throne room for the wedding. No Sept of Baelor it seems, nor a wedding in the Valyrian customs, but Otto seems to have spared no expense with a fortnight of celebrations planned. Usually the wedding comes in the midst of it but Otto must be desperate to get her married and bound by law before she can run away with me again.
I don't blame him, it's a valid concern.
Within the hour she will be queen, a perfect pawn in Otto's scheming. Within the hour Rhaenyra's position as heir will be threatened as it's never been before and Viserys is too blind to see it. I could so easily tell the king just what I did with Alicent last night, but she would be ruined.
And I love her more than my own desire to end this. I love her too much to betray her, even if it would mean saving her.
She will be looking for me now, waiting for me to enter the throne room, waiting for me to be there for this day she has dreaded for so long now.
And I can't deny her.
Which is why, a little less than an hour later I enter the wedding late and a little drunk, wearing the gown of crimson red she loves so much just as the ceremony has begun.
"We stand here in the sight of gods and men to witness-" the high Septon trails off as the entire room looks back at me standing there, a scarlet letter.
I look to Ser Criston Cole whose duty it is to announce me "The Lady Viserra of House Targaryen."
There's horrified looks from everyone in the room, no doubt believing I'm here to cause chaos on my fathers behalf, but I'm only looking at her as I walk down the aisle towards her and bow my head as I reach the end. It's then I finally see the look in Viserys's eyes, the simple understanding I am not his sweet niece, but my fathers daughter.
I don't say a word as I meet her mortified eyes and come to stand beside Rhaenyra who whispers "What are you doing?"
"Attending the wedding of our new queen," I answer as the High Septon clears his throat.
"We stand here in the sight of gods and men to witness the union of man and wife: one flesh, one heart, one soul, now and forever.” She is beautiful standing there in white and red, but I know I cannot help but be the only one in the room looking upon this young girl, being worn by the Targaryen jewels and crown, believing she is too young for this. “Let it be known that Lady Alicent of House Hightower and King Viserys of House Targaryen, the First of his Name, are one heart, one flesh, one soul. Cursed be he who would seek to tear them asunder.”
It's then I feel Otto's gaze on me and meet his eye. He should be feeling victorious in this moment but I see it in his eyes, the fear. His daughter may be queen, but whilst I live he will always have an enemy who holds her heart.
“In the sight of the Seven, I hereby seal these two souls, binding them as one for eternity. Look upon one another and say the words.”
I can see her trembling as the High Septon binds their hands, her nails bloodied. “Father, Smith, Warrior, Mother, Maiden, Crone, Stranger…”
Her voice is barely audible over his, she's terrified.
“I am hers and she is mine. From this day, until the end of my days,”
“I am his and he is mine. From this day, until the end of my days.”
Rhaenyra and I both look to the ground as Viserys says “With this kiss, I pledge my love."
He kisses her as I did just hours ago and the room fills with celebration. Yet Rhaenyra and I are the only two who do not rejoice.
We look at one another, despite our anger, despite it all, in mutual understanding at being both devastated by this day.
Alicent is lead through the room, her eyes meeting mine briefly as she passes by us and the room follows to where the first feast is to be held outside.
"Long live the queen," I say under my breath. "It seems this day is a beginning for her, but an ending for us."
Tonight she will lay with Viserys, and may well become with child. Today her girlhood ends, being so abruptly torn away from her. As is ours.
"If you love her you won't do anything stupid," Rhaenyra says. "Not today."
"I already did, and she begged me not to again," I reply numbly. "After today I'll be gone, and I don't know when I'll return."
She knows where I'm going and her voice is quiet "As long as you come back."
She reaches for my hand and squeezes it before letting go and leaving with the rest of the crowd. I turn my head towards the throne my father desires with a pit in my stomach at what's to come.
~
I stand at the edge of the crowd, but far from hidden with eyes drawn to me with every step towards the king and his new queen. I do not miss Otto whispering to the Kingsguard as I approach.
Alicent looks up at me from where's she's seated beside Viserys, a silent plea in her eyes.
"Apologies for being late," I say and pull out a small box. "A gift for her grace the queen."
Hesitantly she takes it and opens it to find a ruby ring set in Valyrian steel, something my father acquired across the narrow sea. "Viserra-" she breathes, immediately knowing its value. "It's beautiful."
"A ring only befitting for a Targaryen queen," I state, Viserys on edge beside her. Not knowing what my motives are, but treating me with the same caution he would my father. I know damn well the assumption will be I'm here on my fathers behalf in vengeance for him being banished, no one would dare guess the truth of it.
"Thank you," she says and dares to take my hand. "Thank you for being here." Her brown eyes are desperate as she asks "Please, stay at court."
My smile is sad as I lie "Of course my queen." I run my thumb over the back of her hand before letting it go. "Enjoy the feast your grace."
As I go to leave the courtyard I take one last look back at her, the most beautiful I've ever seen her but also the most sad, before I leave to strip myself of this dress and dress myself in my dragon riding armour.
Yet as I make my way out of the Red Keep to return to the dragonpit I'm stopped by a member of the kingsguard.
"Did the queen order you to find me?" I ask Ser Criston.
"She did," he answers. "She asked me to prevent you from leaving."
"I am leaving to fight a war," I inform him. "I assure you the queen will not have you punished for letting me through."
"No, but she will be upset," he tells me, desperate to please in his new position. "There are many here who would rather you stay at court, myself included."
I tilt my head towards him, intruiged. "Is that so Ser Criston?"
"Yes my lady," he answers and I can't help how my lips turn upwards. "Is this amusing to you?"
"Not at all, I'm merely curious," I answer truthfully and tell him "Allow me to go to Darkfyre and tell the Dragonkeepers they need not prepare her for flight and I will return."
He's foolish enough to believe it and steps aside. "As you will my lady."
Now I am amused as I walk past him straight out the front gates of the keep and make my way to the dragon pit to find her prepared as I'd instructed them upon landing.
"Come on sweetheart," I say, running my hand over her black and red scales. "It's time you got out of this pit for good."
And so I mount her and take my leave from this city to meet my father at Hightide before we make our journey to the stepstones.

i just read the tv tropes page (super cool btw) and was curious about something. it says that both Mudclaw and Ripplestar (who i assume is River ripple?) die due to "Bolt of Divine Retribution", why did it happen? what does it serve to the narrative? i'm SUPER invested in your re write, so i hope you don't mind the questions ^w^
The TVTropes page is so thorough and impressive I was blown away by it, I'm legitimately flattered like a pancake that @halogenwarrior made it, I don't know how else to thank them besides showering them in praise
On the topic of Bolt of Divine Retribution, there are three times so far that StarClan has smote cats. Only one of them recovered. Those three cats were Ripplestar, Mudclaw, and Darkstar
In this rewrite, StarClan has been shaken up a lot. In terms of morality, StarClan cares about the preservation of the Clans above all else and is a shifting entity, as old cats fade and younger spirits join. They also keep their godlike aspects from early supporting material, like Code of the Clans. They can strike with thunder, make trees grow faster, craft young kittens, etc.
So sometimes it's possible to piss them off so badly that they do something very emotional.
Ripplestar
He's based on Ripplestar of Code of the Clans, the underrated field guide that everyone should read imo. I'm a big fan of the field guides and I try to weave in a lot of their stories!
In the rewrite he leads rebellions against the other Clans, trying to make room to bring SkyClan home. His actions lead to this part of history being called the Ripple Era.
Eventually this culminates in him attacking the other Clans at a gathering and being betrayed by his adopted brother, Gorseclaw. In fury at his violation of the full moon truce, StarClan smites him dead.
Ripplestar's actions result in the surviving leaders adding three new laws to the Code and generally cracking down on their warriors, a major domino kicked over towards the abysmal state of clan culture during the events of TPB.
Ripplestar hangs out in the Dark Forest with a couple of his old supporters. He's one of the spicier spirits, but really not that bad of a dude if you're not shred-worthy.
Mudclaw
For the narrative I'm writing, I don't do the "if your intentions were good all along, we forgive you :)" type StarClan we see in canon.
It was fine in their eyes to cast doubt on if Onewhisker had lied, but StarClan saw the truth, and Onewhisker did everything in his power to lead his Clan fairly, even trying to negotiate with Mudclaw. He refused, and yet, accepted that they would know the truth when they were able to contact StarClan again. For Mudclaw's uncooperative behavior, StarClan was just annoyed. Not furious. Not damnation-ready.
But then, Mudclaw worked with insurgents in RiverClan and ShadowClan, promising to support them in kind if they helped him become leader. He plotted with them, implying the proud and great StarClan could be fooled by such a stupid and simple trick, and then he tried to kill Onewhisker. The rightful leader of WindClan.
Several cats die in this skirmish, more than canon. He weakened WindClan at a time when it was more important than ever that it have unity. He insulted StarClan itself by taking matters into his own paws and breaking the code. StarClan was furious, and for this, refuses to let him live, dropping the tree on him to prove that he is NOT the chosen leader of WindClan.
StarClan does not care that Mudclaw tries to plead that he thought Onewhisker was lying; he is blamed for the death of every cat who died that night, and sent to the Dark Forest.
Darkstar
After the deaths of Birchface, Flowerpaw, Mapleshade's kits (appearing as the adults they were supposed to become; Patchpool, Larchface, and Petalstar), Ravenwing, Frecklewish, Appledusk, and finally Mapleshade herself, StarClan is VERY ANGRY.
They try to summon Oakstar and Darkstar to the moonstone right away, but Darkstar leaves god's texts on read so they zap her.
StarClan damns everyone even tangentially related to the incident to the Dark Forest out of blind fury, even sending the lives that Darkstar and Oakstar have lost so far to walk there as punishment. They're given a clear commandment; Protect kittens and never let this happen ever again.
Oakstar does not listen and eventually starts the Crusades that create BloodClan. Darkstar aces the assignment with flying colors and creates the Queen's Rights.
Oakstar goes to the Dark Forest for failing this so hard. Darkstar gets to go to heaven and also a lollipop.

Lily was happy that Gorou stayed with them and bounced happily when Heizou said there was enough places for all of them "yaaay~!" She cheered before walked with him to the table holding hands with him and Gorou.
Once she saw the two sitting there, she beamed a bright smile before she has the chance to talk waiting for Gorou to finish then bowing her head to the Man and Lady respectfully saying "hello~ my name is Lily Redfield~ my papa is Vincent~ and I know who you are from the story of the five ka-seen~?" She stuttered because she did forget the right spill but added happily "I met with Venti and Mr. Kazuha~! Now I meet the beautiful lady~, big sister Ayaka~!" she explained calling Ayaka casually 'big sister' but then looked at Ayato and tilted her head "are the Mister papa called 'the master of Ninjas~', Sir~?" She asked him with curious smile.
Lily blushed slightly of what she's about to ask "can I hug you~, big sister~? I want to be a hero like you too~, one day when I grow up~" she asked the lady of the clan shyly yet honestly showing how much she admires her and reminding the two siblings of the boldness of her father.
Not long ago, Vincent visited during the Irodori festival and bought a lot of good books for his daughter and when he was done walking around Chinju Forest to draw some scenery including the mirror maiden from the fatui after asking her, he heard a soft hums not from the main road to leave the forest towards the City as a young lady was passing quietly with her seemingly elder brother whilst they enjoyed the beauty of the surrounding area.
The older male looked at artist with sharp eyes wondering if he was an assassin only to be met with gentle smile from the traveller who bowed his head politely to them while standing still far enough from them wishing not to intrude on their time "may I ask, Who you might be, young man?" Asked the one in white coat littered in elegant blue and gold designs "My name is Vincent Redfield. I'm an adventurer who travel around Teyvat for new art ideas and inspirations" he answered with calm voice.
"so you do know who we are?" Asked the man "pardon my ignorance, I can only think of high status, but I have no other clue" he admitted but still polite about it "hmm~, how about you join us then for a hotpot game~?" Asked the man with mischief glint in his eyes enjoying how upfront he is "sure~, why not~? But I do know that game~ wish you good luck~" Vin said with such confident tone which made the man laugh at his answer then the three of them head to Komore Teahouse talking about each other and their jobs, even Ayaka joined them feeling strangely at ease being herself in Vincent's light and joyful presence, and he did win at first place that night.
“Vincent Redfield, hm?” Ayato asked, amused. “Doesn’t that name sound familiar, Ayaka~?”
“Yes, I remember him,” said the younger Kamisato. She happily opened her arms for a hug.
“Oh? Do I have a second imoutou now~?” Ayato teased.
Ayaka’s face flushed at the barrage of compliments from the little girl. “H-hero? I wouldn’t go that far…”
“Nonsense, Lady Kamisato,” said Heizou. “You’re the one who convinced Aether to help with the rebellion, weren’t you? You captured that man’s heart and roped him in when we needed him the most~!”
“M-Mr. Shikanoin, you don’t have to phrase it like that!” she said. “Aether is just a friend. He has more important things to worry about now. I just hope he’s safe, wherever he is…”
“When I last saw him at the Golden Apple Archipelago, he mentioned that his next destination was Sumeru,” Kazuha said.
“Archon-speed to him then,” said Heizou as he solemnly looked to the northwestern horizon, the sun dipping below the coral mountains. “That place is waging a silent civil war all its own…”
“And if anyone can put a stop to it, it’s Aether!” Gorou declared.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if he already has by now,” came Albedo’s voice as he returned with the other three from the banquet table, each with their own plates. “In his last letter correspondence to us, he mentioned a Forest Watcher in Avidya Forest that he thought my brother might get along with. That was a few weeks ago.”
“I get that he helped solve the Dvalin issue in Mondstadt pretty quickly,” said Nigredo, “but civil unrest and racism are much harder things to unravel. Those damn Sages at the Akademiya… Claiming that Lesser Lord Kusanali hasn’t done anything for them when they never even gave her a chance, locking her up the moment she was born.”
“The moment she was born?” Albedo asked with a tilt of the head. “They respected her rule just fine before the Cataclysm.”
“What are you talking about? She didn’t exist before the Catacylsm.”
“Based on my knowledge of their history, she did,” Ayato interjected. “She merely expended her powers and reverted to a childlike form.”
“That’s not… Huh?”
Albedo’s brows furrowed in concern. “Nigredo… Are you having strange dreams again? Perhaps Vincent should check on your bracelet—”
“No, no, I’m fine. I must have been…misremembering my research. Just…forget I said anything.” The black-clad alchemist started poking at his food.
“Am I really mistaken?” he thought. “I swear there was a different Dendro Archon before you and I died, right Durin?”
“Yes, that is my recollection as well.”
“Then why is everyone looking at me like I’m crazy. I mean, I am crazy, but not for this.”
“If you’re not gonna eat, mind if I steal some off your plate? Before it gets cold.” Heizou’s voice jolted the Erdeprinz out of his thoughts as star-shaped pupils looked up at him.
“Oh, uh, sure, you can take some of the fried tofu if you want,” he said.
“Exactly what I was hoping you’d offer~” The detective picked up a pair of chopsticks and helped himself.

the tragic bit of the hunger games series is that everyone is lowkey forget about... plutarch heavensbee
Please do tell about him. Why do you like him?
Post anon is referring to:
the tragic bit of the hunger games series is that everyone is lowkey sleeping on the fact that plutarch heavensbee, or heavensbde, is the one character who managed to pull a rebellion right up under snow’s nose, found out about district 13, got victors in the districts and spies in the capitol to his side without getting caught or anyone informing the president about this, and came out on top even after the war.
specific tidbits about plutarch that I like are
he's central to the rebellion. without him, the whole movement might not have existed. what's his role in there? when did he come up with it and why? how did he find 13? how did he pull off the 75th?
he's mysterious as a character and leaves plenty of unanswered questions. questions that I've mentioned in the first point, but further than that I'm curious about him as a person. he was the leader of the underground movement, but he's had a lot of courage to do what he did. did he have personal motivations? how did he become so knowledgeable about the time before Panem?
he is vital for my other characters and the overall story I want to tell. my first character was caesar and ever since then I've written about caesar a lot in relation to plutarch. for caesar to be a rebel, he needs to know plutarch--and I like to seem them as best buddies, opposites entirely because one thinks with his heart and the other with his mind. there's also my original character, virgilia snow, who is married to president snow and who falls in love with plutarch and thus has a major rebel right by her side. plutarch feels vital for all the stories about rebellion in the capitol and why shouldn't he! he's a major character there.
I approach thg as a dystopian literature, not a ya literature. this is a vital difference to me. ask me what book recommendations I have that are similar to thg and I will probably just list the dystopian classics to you like 1984 rather than divergent or twilight. and like in most of these, the character meets, believes in, or founds a rebellion. those characters are usually the main characters. while katniss was important and is a great and well-written and brilliantly conceptualised character, she ultimately was used by the adults around her. so what were these adults up to? plutarch creating a network of people that made the system possible for katniss to rise to the role she took up is incredibly fascinating to me. to have founded that system, it takes extreme courage and competence to figure out who to trust and who not to trust. it's exciting hearing more about that! and therefore plutarch--and characters like caesar who join the rebellion--are characters whose stories are worthwhile and interesting.
PSH uplifted plutarch. we all sorta know that there's great actors, and PSH was one of them. I at times like his performance even better than how plutarch was written--in the books he feels rather like a know-it-all while the movie!plutarch has a tad bit more empathy and just overall has more emotions--book!plutarch was happily running around 13 before the bombing while movie!plutarch shat his pants, more or less. PSH really gave plutarch more of a fleshed out character.
I cannot say that I really truly want a book from Collins, simply because I have my own thoughts about him and will ultimately be disappointed in small or--worse--big ways. but it is fun to just conceptualise and think about what I'd like to see her write :)

When the Bellflower Booms: Reasons
“Onora, why did you join the empire?”
Onora startles, caught off guard by Maul question.
“Sorry?”
“Why did you join the empire?” he asked again, “Is it for their ideals”
The red-head looked over to the two men. Thrawn was on a chair looking over reports, but he looked up at her, waiting for her response. Maul laid back on the bed, smirking in that dark way of his. Onora chuckled under her breath, stretching on the chair shes in.
“Nothing that dramatic, Maul. I'm only in it for the paycheck.”
That caught Thrawns attention and he stared at her.
“Really?”
“Um, yes. Come on, I'm not the only one who joined the empire to get paid and to have food in our belly. For a lot of us, we don't have time for ideals, we just don't want to be homeless or starve.”
Onora sighs and she sits down to fully look at her lovers.
“Especially since the empire has taken so much from other planets. You can barely find work, even as a scrapper and I am not going back to Bracca for that.”
She then shrugs.
“Besides, the empire won't last long.”
Maul and Thrawn glanced at each other and the zabrak smirked.
“And why would you think that, dear heart?”
“Because places of powers like that don't last long, when all it does is take and take. Besides the rebellion has started almost immediately, it will be last only 20 year as much.”
Onora stated so matter of fact, like she some how knows something nobody else knows. Perhaps she read it in history so many times, but the men seemed interested in her point of view.
“Also, empires are always run by the same type of men.” she continued “Tiny little men that are scared of death.”
That earned a snort from Maul, while Thrawn looked thoughtful.
“And you are not afraid of death?” he asked
“No, I'm not. Death is a natural part of life, its also the ultimate equalizer, it comes for everyone, no matter how many time you avoid it.”
Thrawn nodded thoughtfully, but then looked serious.
“You should take care of who you keep company, darling.” he said, folding his hands together, “Such words can be taken as treason.”
Onora scoffed
“Treason ? Please Thrawn. Besides don't act like you don't have your own agenda.”
Maul watched as Thrawn seem to stiffen.
Now, that is interesting.
During their time together, he learned the chiss had certain tells, despite his emotions being always guarded. This is the most he seen him caught off guard; it makes him curious just what hes thinking.
“I'm afraid I don't know what you mean.” Thrawn said.
Onora smirked as she got up and walked over to him, standing just an inch from him.
“You value the strength of the empire, but you don't fully support it. You have your own agenda with it. I don't know what it is, but you are planning something.” Onora said, “Its not treasonous or anything, but more like observing, wondering when to take advantage.”
Maul smirk widened as he the pompous Grand Admiral look a loss for words. Oh, their darling hit something on the head and he could see Thrawns internal scrambling to say something.
“You don't have to tell me, thought.” Onora said, “Not yet anyway.”
She then winked and sauntered off to the bathroom.
Maul pouted a bit, he wanted to watch Thrawn flounder a bit more. He then looked at the chiss, who didn't look it, but he could tell he was trying to settle his nerves.
“Need a moment?”
Thrawn looked at him angrily and stalked off, making Maul throw his head back and laugh loudly.
Oh yes, their darling definitely got something.

WonderBug
Angst Edition
Diana Prince (Wonder Woman) x Marinette Dupain-Cheng (Ladybug)
I am late. SO, so , so late but here it is
1: Soulmates @maribat-angst-fluff-april
My partner is the wonderful @thedragonbug
Ao3
Fuffy Edition
Soulmates exist, and Marinette hates hers. You see everyone is born with their half or part of a complete soul mark. The other parts would appear when you were closer to your soulmate and be permanent when they were close emotionally. For everyone, the appearance or 'drawing' of the mark was light and warm. But not for her, no her drawing was heavy and hot, like a hot knife digging into her arm.
Her parents knew this, and it was concerning, to know that their child was in pain because of their soulmate. Seeing as the marks were not supposed to be painful. Yet as there was no good reason given by medical and mark professionals, and the fact that her soulmate didn't stay near her for long there was nothing that they could do. They did tell her that few, this phenomenon affects one in a million people and she was just lucky enough to be one of them.
Over the years she grew used to the pain, but every time she did it would come back even stronger than the last. She slowly hated her mark and in turn her soulmate. Marinette would cover her mark, ignore it, even wish it away. All her soulmate did was bring her pain. Sure, it upped her pain tolerance, but it hurt her still.
When she turned fourteen, she became Ladybug. She then recognized that her mark was actually the wire of her yo-yo.
The first time Chat Noir claimed they were soulmates she broke down in tears. luckily for her he told her during patrol and not an attack.
"We aren't soulmates, Chat, and I'm glad we aren't." She nearly whispered.
"Why Bug?"
"Because I hate my soulmate, and I don’t want to ever hate you."
"Why would you hate your soulmate?" He seemed genuinely curious. But no one outside her parents knew, not a single person knew what happens to her.
"Because it hurts when they are close, it hurts so badly. The drawing is painful. I never want to meet the person who keeps hunting me." Tears formed in her eyes and Chat hugged her.
"I'm not your soulmate, then." She shook her head. "Good thing I'm your partner, and Plagg help me I am going to be your best friend. Got that Bugaboo?"
A half-hearted chuckle and a small smile escaped her. "Sounds good Kitty." The first person she has ever told, the person who was convinced that they were soulmates, cares for her, to help alleviate some of her pain.
The two became inseparable after that, to the point that most of Paris believed they were in a relationship.
When Nadia asked them about it during an interview, their reactions were memorable. Both all but gagged, turned to face each other, and then laughed almost falling out of the seats.
"I believe we have missed the joke." Nadia commented, worried, and confused.
"Why would I date my sister?"
"Sister?"
"Ladybug and I consider each other siblings in all but blood."
"Everything between us is simply platonic, not even close to romantic.” Ladybug answered after Chat.
“Then why would the whole of Paris believe you to be soulmates?” She may be good at hiding her pain, but the question must have made her react slightly, or Chat knew how sensitive the topic was to her.
“We aren’t soulmates, not the bonded ones that everyone thinks of.” He began. “We are the holders of the black cat and ladybug respectively because our souls resonate with the miraculous. Sure, they are two parts of a whole, but we are practically twins, two halves of coin. She is the sister I choose, she is my partner, and that is our relationship.”
“He’s completely right, now I think it’s time for us to start our patrol, BugOut!” Her smile now in place and their excuse to leave perfectly timed and respectful they made their exit.
They went on their patrol as normal, except just as they arrived at the Eiffel Tower to end the patrol. She was about to land on the platform when a searing pain flashed and radiating affecting her entire body blinding her momentarily. A single moment caused her to collapse on the tower landing, crumpling on the platform.
“LB!” Her breath came out in short bursts, she was clutching her upper arm eyes squeezed shut. This was the worst it has ever happened before, and she wanted it to end. As soon as the cause of pain came it disappeared. Leaving only the memory and a phantom pain.
"Just give me a minute." She slowly got her breathing under control, starting to get accustomed to the new level of pain.
"You weren't kidding that is the worst I’ve ever seen you hurt."
"Yeah not fun."
---
A month after that her mark burned again. This time during class. The teachers knew she would randomly stop due to pain, but they were told they were random migraines. To the point Mari would hold her head and rub her arm to sooth herself, while playing up a headache. Adrien stayed back after the class let out." You know you don't always need to put on a brave face Bugaboo."
Her attention snapped to him. "Well it's easier than constantly answering questions Kitty." She figured quickly.
Sure, they found out one another's identity, but that worked in their favor. After Tikki got sick, Fu started training Mari, and after a month Marinette was given guardianship. Fu still hasn’t lost his memories because Mari let Wayzz stay with him, for the time being, he eventually returns it to Mari in order to move on with his life, his memories fading gradually.
When Adrien got his hands on the grimoire, he of course showed it to Marinette.
“Kitty I know you don’t want to hear this, but I think your dad might be Hawkmoth.” This seemed to perfect for him to have without him being a villain.
“I know, but…”
“Adrien is there any motive anything that might be what he would wish for?”
“My mom. Dad closed himself off when she disappeared. I bet he would wish for her back.”
“Okay, so I’m going to be blunt okay.” He nodded. “So, if your mom is dead there isn’t anything that can be done without the wish, meaning at least one other person is dying.”
“So…”
“But if she is anything but.” She flipped through the grimoire recalling the studies she’s did with Fu. “There are ways we can find or even heal her.”
“This is all riding on an if.” He looked unsure as if this was too much to accept.
“Do you trust me?”
“If I didn’t, I would have turned tail and run a long time ago.”
“You dork.” She lightly shoved him, but he swayed dramatically.
“You two are close.” The new student in their class came up to them.
“Lila, right?”
“That’s right.” She answered sickly sweet, almost fake. “Are you two soulmates by any chance?”
“No.” Adrien answered. “Why?”
“You’re Adrien Agreste! Why would you be in public school?” She finally seemed to recognize.
“Let’s just say it’s a bit of rebellion.” He chuckled.
“We’re still on for video games, right?” She brought up to end the conversation seeing that Adrien was getting uncomfortable.
“Your winning streak is going down.” He announced.
“You want to join us, Lila?” She offered.
“Why?”
“Because your new and I want to get to know you.” Marinette answered honestly.
“Why?”
“Because we know you lied but still want to know you, the real you.” Adrien added.
“Why?” She asked suspiciously now.
“Question! Is it a felony to kidnap her to play video games, have snacks, get to know her, then let her go?”
“Well the kidnapping part is but if she goes willingly, I call that a hangout session.” Adrien mused.
“True, true.” She hummed. “So, what do you say, because now I am determined to get to know you.”
“Wh…”
“Kidnapping it is.” Adrien decided and grabbed the new girl’s wrist pulling her out of the library. Mari picking up their bags.
Lila herself wasn’t too bad once she started telling the truth, lying is a coping mechanism she created, because she is constantly moving schools, cities, and even countries. She is pretty interesting when she isn’t exaggerating. She was on a Hollywood movie set, but she was there on accident, she was looking for the bathroom in a restaurant and they were filming there that day. She did save a kitten on a tarmac once, but one it wasn’t Jagged Stones, it was a kitten who spooked out of their carrier and rushed down the stairs. Lila dove and caught it before it could leave the passenger unloading area to get the tram to the airport. (Some small airports unload passengers in a certain area of the tarmac and either shuttle them to the building or have a sectioned of walkway that is cleared for passengers, to walk back in only.)
After almost two hours Lila left for home when Adrien’s father called, and he was angry. Together she and Adrien ran back to the Agreste Mansion.
“Adrien!” Gabriel came out disheveled and slightly panicked. “And Miss Dupain-Cheng.” He slightly composed himself.
“Sorry I kept him.” She apologized. “He showed me this really cool book and you know how it is when inspiration hits.”
“Ah yes the inspiring fashion designer friend.” Adrien had walked up and handed his father the grimoire.
“It’s quite an interesting spell book.”
“You can read it?”
“Yes, I can. (Come on out little butterfly.)” Nooroo flew out from his hiding spot. “Hello kwamii of transmission and to you as well Hawkmoth.” She was calm deathly calm.
“How?!” Gabriel growled.
“Calm down. I have a question for you first. You want the jewels used by Ladybug and Chat Noir, why?”
“Would my answer change your plan of action to urn me into authorities and to the heroes?”
“My response may change, but you’ll have to answer to find out.”
“My wife wielder the peacock miraculous, it is broken, and she fell ill, and is in a comatose state.”
“Ah! So here is what is going to happen.” She took the grimoire from Gabriel and flipped over pages. “There is a way to revive her without resorting to using the wish.”
“How do you know this?”
She simply smiled. “You mind gathering these ingredients please Adrien?” She text him a list.
“Sure.”
“How do I know that this isn’t a ruse?”
“One I hate liars, and two because all magic has a cost, and this way is less than if you were to use the wish.”
“What do you mean cost?”
“Just like using your transformation wears on the kwamii, and the power affects your limit. Magic has its cost. The wish because it will always rewrite reality, the price is steep. Bringing back one life means you lose at minimum one other person from your life most likely more.”
“And this?”
“From what I understand. Everyone involved in the spell will have their energies deprecated so they will sleep for a day to a week.”
“Randomly?”
“No, the more people the less each person sleeps.”
“Here they are!” Adrien burst back in the room.
“Do you have the peacock miraculous?” Gabriel nodded. “Okay we’ll need that first, so lead the way to the kitchen.” Both men shuffled confused. “You do know where the kitchen is right?”
“Um well find it eventually.” Adrien chuckled. They were lucky and form it easily and Gabriel left while she and Adrien began to individually brew two separate potions. Adrien the more complex one for his mother’s revival. And she did the simpler one to fix the miraculous. Sue her Adrien is the better one in chemistry, sure he can’t cook to save himself, but he has a gift for chem, and Tikki help her she will teach him to cook. It’s practically edible chemistry, right?!
She took the Brock from Gabriel and fixed it, allowing Duusu out. “Okay so who is going to do this?”
“We will,” Adrien answered for himself and his Father, who nodded.
“Please let be help as well.” Miss Sancoeur offered.
Nooroo, Duusu, Tikki, and Plagg (they came out of hiding now) came to her. “We can help.”
She nodded and saw that Gabriel and Natalie were staring wide eyed between her and Adrien. She thought she heard Natalie say, ‘That explains so much’ but she isn’t sure.
Long story short they were able to wake up Emile, but she took back the peacock and butterfly, leaving Plagg with Adrien. Funnily enough the Agreste’s became a second family to her, once Gabriel finally grasped how to be a father. They told Paris that they had found Hawkmoth, but he would be tried by the order of Miraculous, meaning he would be stripped of the gem and his memories of the miraculous erased. It was a lie but Tikki told her that was what would have happened. There was some outcry, but they explained that they would have no recollection of it, and it wouldn’t make sense to try them.
The next few years of her life were blissfully normal, aside from the fact she had a contract under the Gabriel brand as the designer MDC, who was also endorsed by Style Queen. Chloe isn’t as bad as she puts on when she isn’t masking the hurt of being constantly ignored and bought by her parents.
- - -
It wasn’t until she was twenty-two and accompanying Adrien to a Wayne charity gala, one he didn’t want to go alone and two she was invited anyways, Chloe, Kagami, and Luka were also there on their own merits and invitations so they all stuck relatively together. Since arriving there Marinette was a constant pain, her arm burned and ached, but she forced herself to simply breathe and tried her hardest to push it out of her mind. But her luck wouldn’t hold, three hours into the event she was approached by who she recognized as Bruce Wayne, the host of the gala, and a woman to his left, the pain was almost unbearable the closer the two approached. Her friends noticed, they knew what her pain actually meant, as she opened up to them about it after a while, but she grit her teeth and tried to push through it.
“Mr. Agreste, Miss Bourgeois It is good to see you both again.” Bruce Wayne acknowledged. “It’s nice to meet all of you as well, Bruce Wayne.” He introduced to the rest, shaking hands. “And this is a good friend of mine.”
“Diana Prince.” She also went to shake everyone’s hands and had left Marinette for the last. The moment their hands touched she almost crumpled, she shrunk back and into Adrien and Chloe. “Is she okay?”
“Diana?” Bruce pointed towards her upper arm, the mark most of them overlooked before was now complete and glowing lightly. What Marinette remembered was that there was her yo-yo string and a golden rope that she only saw once before on her own arm. She felt sick, Diana was staring at her now, she recognized that Marinette was her soulmate.
“Melody?” Luka now stepped up.
“I want to leave.” She answered flatly.
“You are…”
She completely turned away, but by now her friends knew what was going on and were glaring at Diana. “I want to leave, now.” She repeated.
“Come on bug, let’s get you away from… this.” He threw a look at Diana, who was looking confused and seemingly alarmed.
The other three were putting as much space as they could between their friend and who is unknowingly causing her pain.
“Please is she alright?” Diana asked stepping forward barely grazing her hand covering her mark. This time it felt as if the skin itself was burning and stung almost like it was being pricked over and over and over again.
“Don’t touch me and stay away from me.” On the outside she looks clam and relaxed, but her voice was soft and raw, her eyes burned in pain. “You and that completed mark can stay far from me.”
“Luka, Kagami mind taking her back to the house?” The two in question led her away and once a safe distance away she broke down in tears, sobbing from the pain she was biting down.
- - -
The two that stayed were simultaneously glaring at her and watching their friends leave the gala.
“Is she alright?” Bruce finally bole the tension.
“As soon as she is far enough away from her.” The girl, Chloe, snapped at her. “Now that we know who is the the person causing her pain, we can keep her from them.” She snapped towards her, but it was a slap to Diana.
“I don’t follow. We are…”
“Soulmates, yeah we figured.” Adrien this time spoke.
“They why would she want to leave, without speaking?”
“One one in a million people are in pain when they are close to their soulmates.” Adrien spoke calmly but stoically. “No one knows why.” He began to fidget with a ring on hi# finger, she couldn’t recall if she saw any jewelry on her soulmate, Marinette, but she has a suspicion. After all she feels similar to her Mother’s aura and presence, that of a Ladybug.
“You are wrong. There is an explanation, but only a few know why that is.” She feels certain that she knows what this is.
“Let me guess you know why.” Chloe remarked, sarcastically and unamused.
“Allow me to explain this another time and place, as this is neither.”
“Fine call this number at noon est tomorrow.” Adrien handed her a phone number and the two turned and left.
“Diana?” Bruce snapped her attention. “What was that about?” He was still calm and collected but she knew he would be the one to ask, figuring out what was the next step, what had the best options of success.
“Magic.”
- - -
The next day she called the number and she was invited to a video call by the recipient. It turned out to be Marinette.
“Hello Diana.” Her voice was not cold but it was emotionless, as if she was forced into this conversation. Granted she did think she would be speaking with Adrien and Chloe.
“I never wanted to harm you, I swear that on the river Styx.” she began but before she could continue Marinette cut in.
“Let’s be clear, I don’t care about your apologies. I just want to know why this is happening and how to either get rid of it or to never have contact with you in any way or proximity.”
“I am apologizing because this is known as the curse of the ladybug and black cat.” She saw the young woman tense at that. “The reason I know of this is from by Mother, Queen Hippolyta Of the Amazon’s.” She allowed that to sink in and the other woman allowed her to drop her defense, nodding to what is said.
“When you say the curse of the ladybug and black cat what do you mean by that?”
“True souls of the miraculous, when in their life they come into contract with their given gems, cause a reaction.” Diana explained. “For the ladybug they receive the pain of their soulmate through their marks. Which is what I assume is going on.”
“Yes you’re right, but this has been going ever since I could remember.”
“Call it what you will fate, destiny, but you were always going to wield the ladybug jewel, that is why the curse manifested itself.”
“What about the black cat?”
“I am unsure, the black cat of my Mother’s time died before meeting their soulmate, but I would assume it would be similar to our situation.”
“Then how do we solve this?”

Mind if we start a discussion about this? 🙃
Because I'm genuinely curious how you came to interpret the Bad Batch's treatment of Crosshair the way you have.
My take:
Crosshair HAD betrayed his squad - and not just while the inhibitor chip was intensified. Remember that Hunter and the rest of his brothers have no idea when Crosshair's inhibitor chip was removed, because Crosshair wouldn't tell them, so they don't know whether things like him trying to literally roast them on Bracca was the inhibitor chip talking or something Crosshair chose to do of his own volition. Even setting all that aside, Crosshair still ultimately chooses the Empire over them on Kamino. And hey, whatever, Crosshair wants different things now, no need to argue about that part... But the fact that Crosshair tried to kill them multiple times and then rejected them because he wanted different things isn't something that can be overlooked. (And I say this as someone who is convinced Crosshair was deliberately pulling his punches when it came to his squad even when under the influence of the chip - but I also realize we as the audience are treated to a closer look at Crosshair's perspective than his own brothers are afforded.)
Fast forward to Crosshair coming back to the squad with Omega. Hunter and Wrecker know nothing about what happened to Crosshair in season 2 beyond the fact that he was eventually imprisoned by the Empire and sent them a cryptic message that they needed to hide. So, okay, now Crosshair obviously doesn't like the Empire either... But that doesn't necessarily mean he's trustworthy.
Still, Hunter gives Crosshair space - until they get to Barton-IV and Hunter finally demands answers. And, even with Crosshair still being cagey, Hunter accepts the little Crosshair is willing to tell him and they move on.
The only other time Crosshair is the recipient of a disapproving glare is when Omega is captured again and Hunter learns that Crosshair had been withholding critical information from them. And once Crosshair explains, the disapproval is gone.
With regards to joining Rex and jumping full-time into a fight to save other clones... I don't see any issue with Clone Force 99 wanting a different life, especially in season 1 when they were trying to figure out the best way to keep Omega safe. Besides, even if they won't join Rex full-time, they DO help when he calls them for one-off missions.
Also not sure where the idea that "they couldn't do a single fun thing for themselves until after Crosshair was gone" comes from, since the past three seasons have undeniably been one loss and hardship after another for the Batch. And any down time they had was never tied to the fact that Crosshair wasn't there.
So, why does the Bad Batch deserve Crosshair's loyalty?
Omega
Despite all the arguments between Crosshair and the rest of Clone Force 99 in "Aftermath," their first priority was to retrieve him from Tarkin's clutches until that literally was no longer an option
Even when Crosshair was gunning for them, their response was to disengage rather than try to eliminate him as a threat (they don't want to hurt him, even when he's trying to hurt them)
When they did cross paths in season 1, they tried to convince him to come back
They might not join a rebellion full-time, but they still help out and oppose tyranny in their own way
They have never, ever treated Crosshair as expendable - he is always their brother, even during the disagreements and family squabbles
It took 2 people to fully convince Crosshair to do a 180 on the Empire - but neither of those people were Bad Batch members.
They couldn't be. What would a squad of defective clones who had been disobeying orders since day 1 know about loyalty to an institution determined to establish order for the good of the galaxy? What would they know about finding purpose in being "good soldiers"?
Now, I DO think the seeds of Crosshair's eventual defection were planted by his brothers. Hunter pointing out that "Blind allegiance makes you a pawn" and then telling Crosshair "All you'll ever be to them is a number" are statements that are proven later to be true. But it takes Cody and Mayday to drive the lessons home.
Cody and Mayday share several characteristics that place them in unique positions to influence Crosshair:
Both are regs who accepted and befriended Crosshair - Cody says he specifically asked for Crosshair for the mission, and Mayday is upfront and friendly to Crosshair right from the start. (Contrast this to the other regs getting up to move tables when Crosshair sits to eat, or the other clone troopers who walk past Crosshair to get onto the shuttle without even sparing him a glance.)
Both are commanders. (I believe Crosshair ultimately respects authority for the most part: even when he was arguing with and challenging Hunter in "Aftermath," he still deferred to Hunter's orders until his inhibitor chip was intensified and he was then promoted to commander.)
Both are loyal soldiers who have served the Empire well - again, these regs are still commanders even under the new government. And we all know how important loyalty to the Empire is to Crosshair at this point.
Both save Crosshair's life during their missions.
In short, both are regs, but they are still soldiers Crosshair can quickly identify with and trust.
I think it's key that Crosshair encountered Cody before Mayday, though. And despite their similarities, both soldiers drive home different points.
CODY
Cody is one of the few regs we know Crosshair already respected - and still respects, given that Crosshair almost smiles when he recognizes him.
(Some proof in case it isn't apparent: Crosshair goes from frowny face...
...to relaxed almost-happy-if-you-squint-just-right face)
Anyway, while Cody does drop some hints early on that he has doubts about the Empire, he is willing to carry out the mission to rescue "Governor" Grotton, showing he will follow orders to a certain extent. However, he shows more restraint than Crosshair might have: he doesn't attack the civilians despite their obvious mistrust of the soldiers, he comes to an understanding with Tawni Ames, he's NOT willing to follow an order to execute her, and he is clearly dismayed and disappointed by her death.
And so, at the end of a "successful" mission, Cody more plainly reveals the depth of his dissatisfaction with following orders against one's own moral scruples:
Hunter had said "Blind allegiance makes you a pawn." And Cody, unwilling to blindly and unquestioningly be a pawn - or act like a battle droid - any longer, goes AWOL.
But that lesson alone isn't enough to make Crosshair turn on the Empire. Instead, he needs Mayday to give him the final push.
MAYDAY
First, Mayday indicates how appalled he is by the idea of anyone leaving their own behind - which we know is a sore spot for Crosshair. But most importantly, Mayday has demonstrated since he was first introduced that he strongly believes in soldiers being loyal to and looking out for each other (which is far different than just being loyal to the Empire).
Second, Mayday unknowingly challenges Crosshair's belief that serving the Empire provides meaningful purpose. (Remember that one of Crosshair's main arguments to his brothers about joining the Empire was so they could "find purpose again.")
Then, he unwittingly goes for the jugular and rips apart the motto Crosshair had adopted.
And then, in case Crosshair has any lingering doubts about the answer to Mayday's rhetorical question, Nolan decidedly answers the question for him.
Hunter had said "All you'll ever be to them is a number," and he is proven right in the most heartbreaking way.
Crosshair had accused his brothers of not being loyal to him; unfortunately, now he sees what true disloyalty looks like. And for Crosshair - severe and unyielding - realizing that he has misplaced his loyalty by giving it to an entity that mocks him and casts him aside for doing so... this is the final straw.
Thankfully, Crosshair has now rediscovered the people who are worthy of his loyalty.

👋 Hello friend! I would love to hear about all of your WIPs but I'm particularly curious about "Firefly in the Romy-Verse". ♥️
Hi friend! @go-haywire Thanks for the ask. <3 If you feel so inclined, feel free to ask about other WIPs too. I’ve definitely got a few.
And now for the question of the hour—Firefly in the Romy-verse. Despite what the name might imply, there are no Firefly characters in the story. It’s more of a Romy story in a Firefly-esque ‘verse. In my notes, I summarize the story as:
Gambit and his crew are part bounty hunters, part thieves, part honest traders trying to survive another day in the Black.
At the moment this is more a collection of characters, backstories, and headcanons. (Can you headcanon your own story?) Anyways, I’ve included my notes on the crew and a snippet after the cut.
At this point the notes are still a bit rough...
Gambit (Captain) - When Remy is banished from the Thieves Guild, he decided to head to the Black. He found an old ship, hired a crew who became family. They’ve been traveling together for a while and they’re stuck on a backwater planet. Rogue works at the spaceport picking up jobs as they come.
Storm (1st Mate) - Ororo and Remy lived on the streets together. ‘Ro got off the streets before Remy did. She wasn’t at his wedding because she was off fighting with the Rebellion. That’s where she met C and suggested she be the crew’s doctor. May or may not have a relationship with Logan (haven’t decided yet). After the war, she joined Remy’s crew. He’s the first person he asked.
Cecilia Reyes (doc) - once upon she and Remy had a fling. It wasn’t meant to be. She served in the rebellion with Storm.
Laura (muscle) - on the run from the Project X, also, you know—the muscle. She is the ‘kid’ (technically a clone) of an old friend of his, and she was spiraling. Logan asked Remy to keep an eye on her, and the two bonded.
Etienne (computers/hacker) - not technically a thief. He didn’t pass his tilling, so it’s not technically breaking exile for him and Remy to be together. Also, offers a loophole so Remy can stay in touch with his family.
Bishop (pilot, and you know, more muscle—also, time traveler) - Bishop is from the future (further in the future than this already futuristic tale). A future where Gambit doesn’t act (makes a choice of non-involvement) until it is too late. When Gambit finally acts its to become the Witness. The Witness did adopt Bishop. Bishop has gone back in time to….something…chase criminals? Whatever. Anyways, he and Gambit have an uneasy relationship, but a relationship none the less. One of the first things he asks Gambit when he goes back in time is: “Where is she?” Gambit is clueless to what Bishop is talking about. This is before Gambit met Rogue…and Bishop is referring to Rogue. Bishop doesn’t say anything else. Until Rogue arrives….And, he is the only one (besides Remy) who is certain that Rogue is a good choice when asked to join the crew. And the only one who doesn’t feel betrayed when Rogue is revealed to be a member of the Brotherhood. (He’s always known.)
And….our last member to join the crew:
Rogue (mechanic/engineer) - Rogue is on the run. Everywhere she goes, she feels eyes on her. She’s on the run from the ‘family’ which took her in because she betrayed them. She’s on the run from the government because she was more than just a rebel—she was a terrorist. The rebels, the ones who joined the official armies and navies of rebellion were pardoned. But, those, like her who had resisted through unofficial channels, who pushed the boundaries into warcrimes, there were no pardons. (Has bounties on her head from both the government and underworld). She works in one place ‘til she gets enough money to move to the next. One day when the bounty hunters were hot on her trail and she needed to leave now (and by now she means five minutes ago), she meets Gambit who’s looking for a mechanic, and, well, it was fate….
And a snippet:
He wasn’t one for signs and presentiments. Still, it didn’t stop him from coming up short when his eyes landed on her. The woman from his dreams. He could never forget the piercing green eyes or the distinctive white streak in her hair. The longing coursing through his body was palatable. In that instance he knew that even if they hadn’t desperately needed a engineer aboard their ship, he would have found a way to bring her aboard. Storm would have accused him of thinking with his d— instead of his head. Laura and Bishop would tell him in minute detail why hiring her was a bad decision. But, Etienne and Cecilia would understand—he hoped. No, Rogue belonged with them. Even if he didn’t feel the magnetic pull towards her, she was another lost soul looking for family.

(Europe-Anon) Me @ Allesand: WHAT THE FUCK?! I. Am. SHOOK. Anyway, the new episode was okay, I guess, though I find the animation style more and more lacking. Sadly. But I'm curious to see where this will lead with Cheerios now going to Eibos (Eidos?) I just don't want to see him turn into some kind of martyr because he did some great jazz with Bahamut. Just leave him alone. How many more episodes to go? 4? 6? Mugaro's farewell to Azazel was so bittersweet especially WHEN YOU LOOK AT THE ENDING
snb:vs ep20: in defense of alessand
azazel’s face is there bcs i just like his face okay
we have 4 eps left.
I’m a bit conflicted about alessand :’)
on one hand I can’t condone what he did, but I kinda see why he did what he did.
in early eps, aless says he joins the orlean knights bcs of jeanne, but she’s gone by the time he does join. meaning he joins maybe 5-3 years ago.
back then the onyx soldiers obviously hasn’t been promoted and doesn’t have its current status, meaning orleans knights is still the most prestigious order to join if you’re looking for glory.
aless is naive, and pretty much inexperienced, and obviously comes from nobility. he’s also pretty prideful (as shown when he gets angry at kaisar for not doing anything when the onyx soldiers take on the orleans knights status and duty). he may not show it much, but pride and family dignity is still important to him.
he may say he joins the orleans for jeanne, but being part of an elite knights order will sure bring prestige to his family.
bcs of kaisar’s link to rag demon, the orleans loses its status
kaisar attacking the king in ep 8 not only puts him in prison, but it also makes the rest of the orleans knights suspect and put shame over them
kaisar running away together with the rag demon in ep15 kinda cements his status as traitor, and srsly at this point, orlean knights is pretty much kinda over.
aless joins to bring prestige to his family, yet all he gets is shame instead.
diaz may know what’s up with kaisar, but diaz never shares this insight with aless. he coddles him, takes care of him, but he never tells him the truth.
after all that, kaisar does apologize and everything in ep18, and aless somehow agrees after punching him, but at what cost?
aless’ family name is on the line when he agrees to their little rebellion. yet in the party itself, nina doesn’t care one wit about what’s at stake, be it aless’ family or their plan.
nina calls herself aless’ fiance to a guy who knows aless’ family, and yet without any hint of shame she boldly asks the king for a dance - right in front of her so called fiance and the nobles.
aless tries to remedy that by calling her his sister, only to have said sister embrass herself in front of everybody and the king, before getting involved in a plot to murder the king - right in front of everybody.
they all manage to run away of course, but nina is still aless’ sister/fiance for the guests, and it will sure to impact his family later.
when aless is lost, azazel finds him, which is quite a consideration, since it means aless is part of their team.
but then in ep20, everyone is gathering, including sofiel and bacchus, yet none remembers poor aless.
it’s understandable for diaz to not be there since he’s still pretending to be loyal to the king, but the same can’t be said for aless since he admits to the guests that nina is his fiance/sister, making him part of the murder plot too.
him stabbing mugaro is probably his attempt to restore his family name and denounce his involvement in the murder plot.
aaaaand looking at it this way, I really can’t blame him for what he did.
he puts his family on the line, only for them to forget all about him after the fact.
if anything, I’m more suprised he still gives his loyalty to the king after meeting jeanne, his idol, and knowing the holy child is jeanne’s kid.
or maybe that’s exactly bcs of it: jeanne’s supposed to be holy saint, so how dare she have a kid and be human like the rest of them? and in cahoot with the rest of the traitors at that.
while I can’t blame aless, I also can’t condone him bcs mugaro. damn it.
and it’s kinda useless honestly, even if aless go tell the onyx captain he just killed the holy child, without a body as proof it doesn’t mean anything. without him telling the captain of their hideout, it doesn’t mean anything.
I always thought of aless as a naive crybaby incapable of killing, but damn he’s cold at the end there. I guess he really is a knight after all.
also I really think using alessand is smart choice (Even if this feel a bit out of nowhere) and more interesting than chari or his soldiers doing the stabbing.
this way, you really can’t guess where the story would go (well other than the charinina end part that is)
ps:
I just hope with aless running away at the end there, none’s going to think azazel stabbing mugaro, since the last person to be with mugaro is azazel after all.
rita/kaisar may vouch for azazel since they both know about azazel & mugaro, but i’m unsure about jeanne (but she does thank him for taking care of mugaro tho, so maybe not), and pretty sure sofiel would blame him.
also i’m pretty sure mugaro’s not dead, in one of sato’s tweet was a pic of rita in her doctor getup after all, so maybe that’s that.
(we’ll also *probably* getting a scene where lucifer’s closing his book in the next ep or maybe the next one after)(I’m still wondering why did the director delete the tweet that contains lucifer’s legs? is it too spoilery lulz)
other things:
i really can’t care about the king at all
in ep19 (or 18?) fava says they could just cut the king’s arm to steal his bracelet, and yet in this ep he says they can’t take off the bracelet unless they kill the king? so which is it?
i’m surprised fava is covering up nina/chari relationship. this is… rather naive (?) of him, unexpectedly. rita’s the one who always saves them all in the end and comes up with the plans, so covering this up might be trouble for them later tho… or is he confident enough to ward off any trouble?
nina’s the lead, so why is the bad ugly things always happening to jeanne and azazel tho?
also I wouldn’t blame either azazel or jeanne if they finally have a breakdown and decide to destroy all things now
the title for next ep is vengeance. it’s probably would be about nina trying to exact revenge on chari anyway.

Did this take me a month to get through because reasons? You bet, buddy.
Anyway, as promised, here is your single post on the topic of Andre Norton's Star Guard (1955).
It was okay, but there's this thing a lot of really old SF does where you spend the whole book being shown a bunch of weird stuff while trying to understand what's going on, and then the solution is dumped in your lap in the last 20 pages. And then the story ends.
That's what Star Guard is like.
Our Boy Kana Karr is an arch, a swordsman who has enlisted to fight as part of a Terran mercenary legion. You see, when humanity first ventured forth into the stars, they got smacked down by Central Control, an alien organization that determined Terrans are too violent to be permitted unrestricted access to space travel. 300 years later, Terrans are only permitted to leave Earth as mercenaries under the hire of aliens (who are thus responsible for them.) This is now Earth's primary vocation: producing legions of archs (who fight with swords and space guns) and mechs (who pilot advanced machines).
Kana joined the legion because he is naturally curious with a deep desire to see the stars, and this is the only way. He is also unusual because he chose to get XT training and is, though inexperienced, his unit's AL (alien liaisons) man.
Kana's legion is deployed to the planet Fronn, where they are being paid to fight for an alien (one of the Llor species) who wants to beat out a rival with a slightly better claim to inherit a chieftainship. Unfortunately for the legion, something shady is going on. Rogue mechs gun down both the legion's employer, his rival, and their upper officers, then frame the legion for killing the aliens. The legion is stranded on a hostile alien world where the native Llor, the rogue legion of mechs in the planet's biggest city, and lots of dangerous wildlife all have it in for them.
Luckily they still have one of their smartest officers (Trig Hansu) and between him and Kana (using his XT training) they manage to get help from the planet's other species (who are traders, and who were disinterested in what was going on until Trig points out all the evidence that the Llor are planning to subjugate them).
With most of the legion left there, Trig takes a small team (including Kana, obviously) to steal a mech spaceship and get back to Earth to warn their leadership about what the fuck is going on (because they're reading this as a definite red flag that humanity is being Framed For Shit). Trig has contacts in the secret underground human rebellion on Earth, and he hopes to reach them. Also, Trig is impressed with Kana and Kana finds out that part of why Trig is so sharp is he's a very experienced AL man himself, he's really good at figuring out aliens and blending into cultures.
Upon returning to Earth, Trig and Kana get turbo arrested and sentenced without trial to a work camp. Kana manages to escape and, while trying to figure out what to do, he gets picked up by some grim-faced men who steer him secretly out of the city.
In the last chapter, he is brought in by the human rebels. Trig is there, and extremely proud of him. The human rebels tell Kana about how they've been undermining Central Control and secretly sending human ships off to explore and find new worlds of their own. Kana and Trig have been welcomed to the rebellion, and they have a plan in motion to rescue the abandoned legion from Fronn.
And that's how the book ends!!!!
It was okay, it's one of those things where reading really old scifi can be tough because ideas that were exciting and fresh to the writer/audience back then are pretty tired by now. Interestingly for a piece of 50s scifi the two most important characters (Kana and Trig), who are valued most by the narrative for their intelligence and curiosity, are expressly stated to be dark-skinned men of color. The author tells us specifically that Kana's Australian/Malayan/Hawaiian and Trig Hansu is African/Middle-Eastern. I'm not gonna hold it up as GLORIOUS REPRESENTATION (Norton does kind of talk about it in this weird ~blood~ way) but I was like hey, nice, while reading it.
Norton also has this bit she goes into (through Hansu talking about the history of Earth) about how a civilization is bound to fall if it loses its desire to do battle, which was kind of eehhhhh for me, but you know what whatever. I'm through it now. I won.
Also, there's a lot of fun 1950s retrofuture. Spaceships travel on routes programmed onto tapes that you can't edit if you don't have the skills! You can direct brain download information recorded from a record pak that is very like a tape! Swords are viable weapons! People are sent into space on rockets that launch vertically so you gotta lay down before it goes up!
I wouldn't super recommend it? But it was short and reminded me of a lot of really old roots.
i ran out of halo novels so i'm gonna start reading old milsf, thus expanding the borders on the genre topics i can be insufferable about

hey so i was wondering! i'm sure this has been done before, but is there a GOOD version of a chorobin au where robin's mother doesn't escape with them/cowards out and never leaves and so you have robin being raised up as plegia's tactician and they still manage to play off chrom relatively well despite essentially being leaders of opposing factions? i have vague ideas that crop up every now and then (1/?)
like plegia!robin still being a relatively decent person because while their mother didn't have enough courage to flee they still had their own small rebellion by instilling ethics in their child while raising them? but this results in robin keeping said tendencies under wraps. also shit like validar using robin to worm into plegia's royal authority along with aversa b/c robin being this perfect tactician gives them a way better rep with the public than gangrel?also like. this version of robin going along with their father's plans to revive grima but only so they can get themselves destroyed permanently in the process and through that end they're orchestrating seemingly perfect plegia victories but also guiding chrom and others to complete the fire emblem? idk. i have thoughts. but i don't know if this idea has ever been done right. what would you do with a plegia!robin chorobin au because i have seen your chorobin fics and i am curious lots
I’m actually not sure if that exists! I haven’t written it, and I haven’t actually read any fics for this fandom, haha. So it wouldn’t surprise me if an AU like that exists somewhere, but I haven’t seen it myself.
As for my own thoughts . . .
I feel like we can’t actually say that Robin would have been raised as a tactician had they remained in Plegia. Yes, Robin is incredibly intelligent and has a fondness for strategy (something that I headcanon they studied on their own while growing up, for kicks), but again, Robin was the child of Validar, who was the leader of the Grimleal, and it was Robin’s destiny to be raised as a sacrificial lamb for Grima. The entire point of Robin’s birth was so that they would be a perfect vessel for Grima. I seem to remember a line of dialogue about how the Grimleal had been trying to give birth to a proper vessel for Grima for decades (if not centuries) prior to perfecting that with Robin. If that is the case and I’m not remembering incorrectly, that means that Robin was bred like a prized dog until they finally had what they wanted. Why on earth would they risk Robin’s life by sending them off to the military? Why would they ever risk Robin in battle? Validar had no choice but to face Robin in battle throughout the course of the game because Robin had joined the Shepherds of their own volition; but I think that, had Validar been able to raise Robin as originally intended, there’s a high probability that Robin would have never seen battle. Validar had no reason to send them. Instead, Robin would be deeply entrenched in the Grimleal until the day came to carry out the ceremony at the Dragon’s Table, at which point Robin would fulfill their destiny of becoming Grima’s vessel so that the Fell Dragon would rise once again. That’s my take on it, anyway.
also shit like validar using robin to worm into plegia's royal authority along with aversa b/c robin being this perfect tactician gives them a way better rep with the public than gangrel?
Mmmh, well, the public’s opinion of Gangrel was complicated, though. The military / people didn’t really start to turn on him until Emmeryn’s sacrifice (and she was killed off for real, all right, I refuse to allow IntSys to cheapen that with the paralogue / DLC), because they were touched and moved by her words. Before that things were certainly bad and there were definitely people (e.g. Tharja, Henry) who wanted out, but at the same time there were a good number of Plegians who (understandably) loathed Ylisse, and so they weren’t wholly against Gangrel’s desire to crush Ylisse under Plegia’s boot. So while I do think that Gangrel would take all the tacticians he can get and, as such, might not object to both Robin and Aversa (though again, I have doubts that Validar would allow his perfect vessel anywhere near war if he could help it), it’s not as if the whole of Plegia was always against Gangrel. If anything, I’d say it’s more likely that the general Plegian was against the war in general, but seeing as how Ylisse had already ravaged them when Chrom’s father was in control, it’s not as if their lives were going to magically get better if Gangrel stopped inciting hostilities between Plegia and Ylisse. I always got the vibe that there was a lot of hopelessness and despair in Plegia, which is what drove them to the Grimleal in the first place (something that was only furthered once Gangrel was killed and Validar stepped up as next in line to the throne, which I’m assuming means that even though he wasn’t king beforehand, he was regent or some such).
(And another side note---this is one thing that I really, really like about Awakening that Fates fucked up on hardcore. Yes, in Awakening, Plegia is shown to be this dark country that’s ruled by an evil cult and yadda yadda, whereas Ylisse is a halidom with a much more benevolent goddess. However, it’s revealed over the course of the plot that Chrom’s father was a horrid tyrant who made life worse for people in both Ylisse and Plegia, and that Plegia’s current actions are a direct result of what Chrom’s father did. Neither Plegia nor Ylisse are painted as wholly evil or wholly good, and I really enjoyed that about the game.)
So with all of that said . . . I think that, if we had an AU where, say . . . Robin’s mother was captured as she was attempted to flee, put to death for high treason (and the kidnapping of Validar’s child), and Robin was raised in Plegia . . . there’s a high probability that Robin would be raised believing that it’s a good thing that they would be used as a vessel for Grima’s resurrection. It’s all they would ever know; they would think that this is how destiny is supposed to play out, that this is the role they were born to play, that everything in their lives is leading to that one, singular moment because that’s the way the universe works. No doubt they would still have questions---they are Robin, after all---but when you’re raised to play one specific role and that’s all you’ve ever known, then any questions you might have about having a different future or different possibilities are all very abstract. It’s like---have you ever played Tales of Symphonia? In that game, Colette Brunel was raised as the Chosen One of Sylvarant. She was raised knowing exactly what her fate would be and why. And though she loved the days when she was allowed to have fun and play with her friends, although she would sometimes dream about a life where she lived beyond her destiny, she grew up accepting her fate as a sacrificial lamb because she thought she had to. She never truly considered alternatives because, due to the way she was raised, she didn’t believe those alternatives realistically existed. And I think that Robin would be very much the same way if raised by Validar; not only would they be brought up believing in the Grimleal’s belief system wholesale, but they would also have a sort of hopelessness about it, particularly if they were told that their mother had tried to escape with them, only to be captured and put to death. Clearly fate is not something that can be changed or avoided. Robin will be the vessel for Grima, and . . . in the end . . . isn’t that for the best?
So then the question becomes: How do we get Robin and Chrom to meet? If Validar doesn’t want to risk Robin by putting them out on the battlefield (and why would he, when Robin is his one chance to resurrect Grima?), then that means we’d have to have them meet some other way . . . and that other way might be Tharja.
Tharja was a member of the Grimleal who also served in the military. We know this, because this is how we meet her; she’s on the battlefield when Emmeryn is about to be put to death, even though she doesn’t want to be there and wants a way out. Although Tharja is very deeply entrenched in her magic and studies, her actual belief in Grima is shaky at best. If that’s the case, then it’s possible that if she met Robin much earlier on---say, in childhood---and developed the obsession that she has with them early . . . and if she learned that it was their destiny to be used as a vessel for Grima . . . then it’s possible that Tharja, much like Robin’s mother, could ultimately develop strong feelings of “no” for that and seek to get Robin out. Of course, as we see in game, Tharja won’t leave without a real opportunity to do so. So that said, it’s possible that Tharja would sneak Robin to the battlefield with her on the day of Emmeryn’s execution, and in that way they would both encounter Chrom there. If Tharja had already been planting seeds in Robin’s mind about escaping their destiny---and if Robin, like so many other Plegians, was inspired by Emmeryn’s last words . . . then it’s possible that they could both join the Shepherds on that day, only this time Robin would have full knowledge of who they were and who they were supposed to become, which I feel would probably change things significantly.
Of course, assuming the Shepherds would survive long enough to make it to that point is a bit of a long shot, considering they would probably be relying on Virion to be their technician, and he is not afraid to sacrifice large chunks of the army if it means winning. =/ So there’s always that, haha.
But yeah, those are my thoughts on it. Sorry if any of this is disjointed ramble; it’s a lot to think about.
