I think I might take a break from 19 Days for a while. It's turned into the Mo and He Tian show and I miss Jian Yi and Xixi. Don't get me wrong I love Mo and He Tian! And their dynamic and growth is interesting. But I thought there was going to be a balance between the two couples relationship. Especially since that whole Mo recovery/getting closer to He Tian arc is wrapping up. I thought we'd get to see Jian Yi and Xixi back in the spotlight but no!

I guess I'm trying to say is I miss Jian Yi and Xixi focus. Their progress has been on pause since the focus shifted. We get snippets here and there of them being wholesome. But no real progress like He Tian and Mo. I'm pretty sure we only got to see Xixi be sad when Jian Yi got hurt for He Tian and Mo. There was no big scene of Xixi and Jian Yi talking about it! That is such a big deal for Xixi! And we got nothing!

So yeah. Definitely taking a break. I haven't been excited for an update in a while. Which is sad. Please tell me I'm not the only one who misses Jian Yi and Xixi?

Ok, listen, LISTEN

He Tian is a really complex character. He's been trying to escape the darkness that his family is involved in his whole life. But at the same time, he very clearly thinks he inherently has that "evilness" inside of him. (it's the simbolysim behind his "fear of the dark" and the reason he lists Mo not being afraid of the dark as one of the reasons he (ht) likes him)

And then, THEN, Mo guan shan shows up, and not only he sees that darkness and doesn't back down in front of it, but he also starts to care for Ht despite it being there.

So the thing that starts growing inside He Tian is the fear that this one person, this one boy who doesn't pull him deeper into the darkness (like his family (sorry He cheng i love you ) bringing him into the business) and KNOWS him as more then just that, will forget him.

That this side of him, that can be good and loved without ties of debt, will disappear alongside Mo's memory.

Then She Li shows up. He tian sees with his own eyes that he cannot protect his loved one without that darkness, and above all he can't freely protect him if that darkness isn't entirely his. This time when She Li attacked Mo he had to bargain for power with his brother to take SL down, so he faces the fact that he needs power and influence to keep Mo safe.

So there comes the sacrifice, he'll go away if he can save Mo. And while away, he'll conquer whatever he needs to make sure Mo never struggles again, so he will never need to leave again.

BUT here's the thing. Mo doesn't know all that, he only knows what HT has told him, Mo knows He Tian only ever expressed fear when 1 - Mo was in danger, 2 - When faced with the idea of being forgotten.

And after months of being loved, reassured, and having HT promise to give him the future of his dreams, months of letting He Tian in, he just disappears one day.

And suddenly Mo is in the position of being "left behind", forgotten.

So when HT comes back, this smug fucker who hurt him that bad, acting like nothing ever happened, Mo wants to pretend it doesn't matter. That he wasn't "the dumbass who got left behind", that it never hurt enough to still matter, years later.

And he also wants it to hurt He Tian back. So he says this.

He says it knowing it will hurt. If he could be left behind by Ht, he wanted he tian to be hurt by the fact that Mo could also forget him. And it does hurt, you can see it in HT's face, in the fact he has to turn it away.

But Mo does care for He Tian, we all know this. So as soon as he sees the result, Ht's hurt expression, the words "you're so cruel", as soon as he sees it actually hurt, he gets hurt as well. He feels the conflict that this situation would bring, the feeling of resenting someone you love, or/and hurting someone you love.

And finally, He tian can't stand it, he can't leave, can't let himself be forgotten by this precious person. So he goes back, he insists on "if you don't remember me ill stay until you do". It's a desperate need, a deep fear.

OX has always told their story in very subtle ways, the plot is always very spread out, and you have to pay attention to the words and details they put in the story. It's as frustrating as it is fun to read it lol, he tian going back and seeing Mo naked is a fun joke, but I do also think it's something that keeps his characterization and does somewhat progress the plot.

TLDR: Mo pushed ht away because he wanted to hurt him for leaving (and he knew how to really hurt him), but also got hurt/felt guilty for hurting someone he loves. Ht came back during the shower because he's scared to let Mo forget about him.

Full disclosure, I've only been reading danmei since May. Also, I only read official translations. Others may be able to give a wider range.

But since you asked so nicely, let's go!

1) Yuwu/Remnants of Filth

Obviously, my number 1 is going to be the danmei I spend 80% of my time here trying to convince people to read.

Yuwu is a gift for fans of angst, literally opens with the MC getting stabbed in the heart and Meatbun doesn't let up from there.

Fun fact - the only Meatbun without non-con elements in the primary ship.

Sad fact - it also lacks her usual comedy.

Why I love it: Mo Xi, my princess, genuinely the saddest boy in all of danmei. I'm ridiculously invested in Ximang's quest for happiness.

2) 2ha/Erha/The Husky and his White Cat Shizun

At it's heart (at least to where the official translations are up to) 2ha is a romantic comedy. Tropes you may have found in other danmei hit so good (ghost weddings and shizun fucking).

Fun fact - Has my favourite confession scene out of all danmei I've read.

Sad fact - Being Meatbun's most popular work, you can basically collect spoilers like pokemon cards. Not even ao3 tags are safe.

Why I love it - Meatbun's smut writing is S tier and Mo Ran is one of my favourite protaganists... although he has some competition.

3) Ballad of Sword and Wine

I feel like I need to formally apologise for sleeping on this series after reading the first volume. It’s so, so juicy! Obsessed with the character dynamics and it’s always a winner when the main couple starts to dabble with each other in the first volume. It’s not Meatbun levels of smut peddling but I appreciate Tang Jiu Qing’s hustle. If you love courtly politics, graphic descriptions of violence and the most insane levels of sexual tension you will ever read. You need this danmei in your life.

Fun fact - I am as obsessed with Cezhou as Xiao Chiye is with the nape of Shen Lanzhou’s neck.

Sad fact - The sheer amount of characters will drive you insane.

4) To Rule in a Turbulent World

Enter You Miao! His introduction made me fall in love with him just as fast as I did Mo Ran! There's a reason everyone raves about chapter 3. Hilarious, horny and wholesome. The side characters are amazing, the main couple is adorable and it's giving hints of political powerplays. Also the first danmei I've read that seems to really deliver when it comes to skinship. The main couple literally can't keep their hands to themselves.

Fun fact - I'm only 50% through but I am buying every single Fei Tian Ye Xiang 7 seas is about to release day 1.

Sad fact - there's no pictures. Also I'm not sure how angsty it's going to get.

Bonus: For the toxic yaoi fan in your life

Meatbun's most unhinged work. She's peddling all the toxic smut fans of bl mangas and manhwas will be familiar with. Even though it's modern it made me nostalgic for that reason. He Yu is a clown and I adore him. Meatbun is airing all her kinks with this one and I'm not mad about it.

Fun fact- This is the first modern danmei I've read. Also, one of the more fun uses of the straight man trope I've read.

Sad fact - Vol 3 cliffhanger!

Why I love it - It's just pure Meatbun chaos.

i love that mo is just very flippant about this whole thing like 'tch. stop fucking around and just do it.' because we know he wasn't like that when she li did his first piercing. he was held down like a dog and it was done haphazardly with a thumbtack or some other random sharp thing.

but this one. this one he was the one who brought the piercer. he chose who would push that needle in for him and he chose he tian. the first time he asked he tian to pierce his ears was an impulse and he tian knew it then and so he declined respectfully. the second time mo asked him to do it, he handed he tian the piercer and he tian still didn't go through with it. he was giving mo more time to think about it. this time is the third time mo has asked him and even now he tian is still hesitating—but not because he doesn't want to but because even now he's still giving mo the chance to back out, the chance to change his mind, and he tian would let him. if mo suddenly decides he doesn't want this actually he tian would back off and they'll probably never bring it back up again (until mo wants to do it for real again) and mo knows that.

but that's not the case here. this time mo was in control—is in control—and he truly, really wants he tian to do it for him so much that he tian's consideration had stopped being sweet (slightly) and have started to irritate mo because what the hell just fucking do it he already asked thrice. what does he tian want him to do, beg?

and when he tian finally pushes that needle in, blows on the pierced flesh tenderly and mutters 'pain, pain, go away' like that's actually gonna work, mo basks in the aftermath, and the realization, and the pure utter relief that it did not hurt at all.

I never thought I'd see the day on which Mo is this comfortable and secure with intimate contact. He always jumped and punched as soon as any one got close - especially He Tian - but this time he did not even flinch! Sure he goes "this is unnecessary, why are you like this?" But it is very affectionate because he really, really does love He Tian. He is comfortable with him. He trusts him.

Safety

I haven’t seen anyone point this out but as I was reading 19 days, I noticed a detail that showed up a few times.

After Mo got beaten up and taken care of by He Tian, he started to subconsciously attach himself to He Tian

Here are a few moments:

First one I noticed was this panel. Maybe I’m blind but I never recall seeing Mo hug a pillow while sleeping. He shows up at He Tian’s house after learning that He Tian really cares for him and boom there you have it.

While Mo sleeps he’s hugging a pillow that smells like He Tian to gain comfort and safety.

Maybe he just wanted something to hug, but ima read deeper into it cause I can and say that he’s slowly starting to slip up and reveal what he truly feels without realizing it. He’s finally been given the confirmation that He Tian truly loves and cares about him and it makes him feel safe, hence him hugging He Tians pillow cause his assigns it with feeling safe and cared for.

This was a big turning point for sure because it is here that you can see that Mo wants He Tian. He started the night facing away from him, walls still up, but when he fell asleep his emotions showed.

Not only did he turn around into He Tians arms, but he too grabbed onto him while sleeping. This points back to my idea of Mo aligning He Tian with safety and comfort. Mo’s body knows what Mo wants, but he is in denial and refuses to acknowledge his love for him. That’s why when Mo is not aware of his movements, his subconscious takes over and glues itself to safety, in this case being He Tian.

Kk last one:

Here we know that Mo was having a nightmare about his past childhood with his dad. Once again we see that in his sleep he was grabbing onto He Tian.

You can even see that Mo is shocked at the gesture he made whilst asleep. It’s very clear that his desire got much stronger over the past few days he spent with He Tian. He once again clung onto the source that makes him feel loved and cared for without knowing.

It’s obvious that something changed on the night Mo got attacked, and we now know that he finally gave into his emotions, but I still love seeing these small details add up. It makes you wonder how much Mo really feels for He Tian but just keeps it on the down-low.

I really like that we learned that Mo and Buzzcut are actual friends from way earlier, and that they hang out together! Even if Mo acts bossy towards Buzzcut, it's still nice to know that they are friends

Also I laughed so much when the boys made fun of Buzzcut for hitting on He Tian lmao I hope that since it looks like they might become friends with him, we will FINALLY LEARN HIS NAME cause I'm tired of calling him only by his nickname

And yes, I'm gonna be that person, but I really don't like jealous and possessive He Tian. Like yeah, they are just dumb teens, and teens act like that when they're in love but still. Jealousy is I think my biggest pet peeve, so that's probably why 🤷‍♂️ anyways, chill out He Tian, Mo literally let you pierce his ears, you don't have to worry about anything 🙄😒

best cdramas I’ve watched since the last one of these posts in 2023 (and some I’m still looking forward to seeing)

A League of Nobleman (watch on WeTV VIP | watch on AppleTV | watch on Viki | watch on bilibili | watch on YouTube) Adapted from the novel "The Mystery of Zhang Guo" (张公案) by Da Feng Gua Guo (大风刮过) starring Jing BoRan, Song WeiLong, Hong Yao, Guo Cheng and Wang Duo. Definitely gay, but in like a very focused, we-have-a-mystery-to-solve way. Loved the acting and the plot; cannot believe people actually gave Song Weilong shit for his acting in this drama. He was aMAzing. The downside is that the editing grew progressively sloppier as the drama progressed, and although majority of the visuals were very satisfying, I never realized how crappy the quality of the light was until I tried gifing some of the scenes. The upside is Jing BoRan holding kittens. Enough Said. 7/10

The Blood of Youth (watch on Viki | watch on YouTube) Adapted from the novel "Shao Nian Ge Xing" (少年歌行) by Zhou Mu Nan (周木楠) starring Li HongYi, Liu XueYi and Ao RuiPeng. Love this goddamn drama. I adopted the entire cast within the first 3 episodes and then I spent the next 37 terrified that half of them would get killed off. There’s def some major character death in this drama my chickens, so keep that in mind (and not a canonical death either, from what I understand). Anyway, this is my fave genre by far so I’m never really picky, but this drama is exhilarating and gorgeous from beginning to end. Highly recommend. 9/10

New Life Begins (watch on iQIYI | watch on Viki | watch on YouTube) Adapted from the web novel "Qing Chuan Ri Chang" (清穿日常) by Duo Mu Mu Duo (多木木多) starring Bai JingTing and Tian XiWei. Just sweet and fluffy. The plot is easy and devoid of complexities, but very satisfying nonetheless. The acting is definitely on another level. The entire cast has bonkers chemistry, and it’s about time someone made good use of Bai Jingting’s comedy potential. One of the top 5 easy viewing dramas on my rewatch list.  8/10

The Legendary Life of Queen Lau (watch on Viki | watch on YouTube) Adapted from the web novel "Huang Hou Liu Hei Pang" (皇后刘黑胖) by Ge Yang (戈鞅) starring Li JiaQi and Li HongYi. Loved this. Although it doesn’t shy away from difficult subjects, this is basically a comedy from beginning to end. Not gonna lie, I mainly gave this a go for Li Hongyi, but it’s hard to even notice him when Li Jiaqi is in the room. There’s no shame in being overshadowed by superior talent :) 7/10

Under the Microscope (watch on Apple TV | watch on Bilibili | watch on iQIYI VIP | watch on Viki) Adapted from the novel "Xian Wei Jing Xia De Da Ming" (显微镜下的大明) by Ma Bo Yong (马伯庸) starring Zhang RuoYun and Wang Yang. Continuously impressed by Zhang RuoYun’s skills. This drama is 90% grit and tension. Drool-worthy visuals. Interesting plot. Sound mixing that gives me a Mo Ran style boner. Make your friends watch it and they will hate you. 9/10

Till The End of The Moon (watch on YouTube | watch on Apple TV | watch on Viki) Adapted from the web novel "Hei Yue Guang Na Wen BE Ju Ben" (黑月光拿稳BE剧本) by Teng Luo Wei Zhi (藤萝为枝). Starring Luo Yunxi and Bai Lu. This was so breathtakingly gorgeous. The chemistry between the actors, the visuals, the special effects, the costumes, everything is stunning in this drama. The romance is by no means original, but still manages to draw you in. Absolutely worth watching at least once. 8/10

Books I been reading lately:

Otherside Picnic by Iori Miyazawa: 8 volume light novel yuri horror series. Almost done with volume 4 now. Taking my time but I like it a lot. The horror is scary and the yuri is sweet. The horror is based on Japanese net lore and "true ghost stories." It's about two women who meet in another world connected to our own, where mysterious entities try to communicate with humans through our fear. There's one season of an anime based on it by the same name, which I loved enough I had to read the books.

Heaven Official's Blessing / Tian Guan Ci Fu by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu: 8 volume tianxia danmei series, about an immortal fail prince and the ghost king who loves him. Also started reading these after seeing and loving the show. Read them all then got hit with the book withdrawal very hard. Might have to read the manhwa too the art looks gorgeous.

Thousand Autumns / Qian Qiu by Meng Xi Shi: 5 volume historical wuxia danmei, taking place during the late Northern and Southern Dynasties of Imperial China. Evil guy meets good guy, decides to turn him evil, fails so hard he falls in love. This one grabbed me good I finished all 5 volumes in 4 days. Not for everyone! Read if you like yandere shit I guess. I really love the writing style of the 7 seas translation, it's so evocative. Haters may say it's purple prose, I say it's pretty.

I really like his character alone and paired with Woo-won ♥ I’m so excited to continue this story in February - I will be reading it as soon as it drops.

It’s him again!!! I can’t get over how much I love Taehee ♡♡ He had me the second that I read ‘The Power Fruit Girls’ (aka The Powerpuff Girls, which is a real show that I watched growing up)!! Anyway, I love Taehee for so many reasons, one being his introverted nature, the fact that he never tries to be someone he’s not, and always sticks up for his man!! As much as I love seeing He Tian and Mo Guan Shan parts in every update (and I really read this comic mostly because of them), it's becoming (OR HAS BECOME ALREADY) quite sad that Jian Yi and Zhan Zheng Xi have almost no development at all, and that leads the fandom to only discuss about Tianshan most of the time we get updates (me included). I get the feeling that their scenes are more like a comic relief rather than to show the growing up of our boys, even if they're entertaining. I hope Old Xian has great moments reserved for them in the future (I'm even hoping for some angst) and won't let them aside forever 😭 Until then, the wait patiently continues...
