(first off, i would like to make it clear to everyone reading that i have never personally played the games, but i have followed it via youtube playthroughs and theory videos since chapter one, so that is the extent of my knowledge of the game, i dont actually know how it feels to play)

i completely agree with your point about the antagonists

like doey was not an antagonist at all, so it felt just really random to suddenly turn him into a monster. I think, considering wjat we know about him it kind of makes sense from a character perspective (because hes established to be aggressive when overwhelmed) but from a gameplay perspective, considering how the previous games approached the antagonists, it seems out of the blue and weird, kind of like they were attempting a twist villain but really really badly.

like you said, the antagonists were set up so differently to previous games. in the other games, there was one main antagonist and every game built up to a big boss fight with them at the end, building up tension towards this moment from the start and having a clear goal of defeating them. whereas, in chapter four, we’re almost immediately introduced to yarnaby and the doctor and then yarnaby chases us and just… dies

and theres still, like, several hours of gameplay left

i wasnt paying attention to most of the marketing and stuff but from what i gathered, yarnaby was pretty established and then they just kinda killed him in the middle of the game and were like “oh well”

and the doctor’s death was similarly weird and kinda lame

like I’ll admit i completely zoned out during it and so i have basically no memories of the period between the ultimatum thingy and getting back to safe haven, but i did look it up and it was jsut kind of meh?

like he’s also been kind of hyped up as a bigger threat and then it turns out that actually you can kill him pretty easily and there’s still several hours of gameplay left

i think what they were trying to do was lead the player character around after different people while the prototype worked in the background but, honestly, I think it would have worked so much better if they had spread it out over multiple chapters.

like what you said about yarnaby being the main antagonist of chap 4 and then the twist being the doctor was behind it all along, but added to that i think there could’ve been a few more chapters focused solely on defeating the doctor and then a big reveal that defeating him actually helped the prototupe in someway (and this is when I think the Ollie reveal should have happened, because I liked it in this game but I think it would have hit a lot harder if we’d been working with him for longer) but i suppose we just have to see how they now deal with it in chaoter 5

anyway this has been my opinion on your opinion. summary: your opinion is very good and it was very interesting to read and I basically added nothing to it lmaooo and i am very excited for your next opinion

My opinion (& honest critique) of Poppy Playtime Chapter 4

Okay hi. First things first, I have been a fan of Poppy Playtime since Chapter 1 came out. I was hooked from Chapter 1, thought Chapter 2 was just fantastic, and was absolutely blown away by how good Chapter 3 was.

And then ... Chapter 4 happened.

I'm not gonna act like it was completely irredeemable, because it had parts that I really really liked- I thought Doey was awesome & the puzzles were by far the most innovative yet. I think the issue for me is that it just didn't feel like a Poppy Playtime game, for multiple different reasons.

My overall summary if you CBA to read everything is that I wish they had just committed to one plot line, one antagonist, one setting and one plot twist: Quality over Quantity. Because of this, it just didn't feel like a proper chapter, and instead like a mishmash of concepts.

Read on for my criticism, & if you have any opinions on it or corrections I'd be happy to read them :))

The first big thing for me

is that it didn't feel like it had an antagonist.

Or rather, it felt like it had three potential antagonists (Doey, The Doctor and Yarnaby) that they couldn't decide between and just shoved all three together, at the expense of the quality of each character.

The first three games it felt clear who the antagonist was- giving each chapter it's own unique story. However, the inclusion of the prototype also added to a larger, cohesive plot which each chapter followed, giving each of them a purpose. However, in Chapter 4... who was the antagonist?

Let's talk potential antagonists for Chapter 4 (& why none of them worked...)

I know what you're gonna say. Doey. And Doey was certainly the main character of this chapter, but if he's the antagonist, then he falls flat.

Part of the charm of the games was the feeling of not knowing what was going on. The isolation in the huge factory, knowing that there was someone after us, but not knowing where they were or what they were doing - like when Huggy dissapears in Ch1, or the occasional limb from Mommy or Catnap's tail snaking down from the ceiling. This makes our imagination run wild - being left alone with the knowledge that we are not alone is such a divine way of building tension.

But if Doey was meant to be the antagonist, then like ... none of this beautiful tension building can happen at all. He's pretty consistently by our side after we meet him, and we immediately learn his entire backstory from the tapes. This feels like the establishment of a new friend, rather than an antag. So then like ... why did they make him start attacking us and have him be the big boss fight? Why didn't he just stay a friend for the rest of the series, or save that boss fight for later games? Instead he randomly turns on us, which just felt so forced. Why did he need to be the big disney villain plot twist? I feel like Doey should have stayed a friend to us, along with Kissy & Poppy. While his Boss fight was cool for lore I guess, we also could have just seen the transformation in another context (like fighting an actual antagonist with us) or just hearing it on a VHS tape (like we did when he met his parents). And then to make matters worse, they just kill him off.

So then, maybe the Doctor is the antagonist. But again, this annoys me. The Doctor is an awesome character, don't get me wrong, but as a main antagonist... hmm. I'm not so sure. Firstly, he just doesn't visually fit with the style of the other antagonists. He's not a toy - he's literally just a computer. Visually, I feel like he just didn't really fit Chapter 4 just yet. I really wish they had just saved him for Chapter 5 (when presumably we meet the prototype & the tone will be much darker) Another issue with him as an antagonist is he didn't really build up any tension either, constantly yapping to us through the security cameras - i get that he's always watching us, but it could have been much more subtle (like how they did it with Catnap).

So I think that the strongest candidate is probably Yarnaby. I mean firstly, visually, Yarnaby fits with the other antagonists. I saw Yarnaby's design and actually got excited about it. he's awesome and that mouth opening thing!!! I mean, Wow! Literally the best designed character in this Chapter.

But then why why why did they not even bother to make him the main antagonist!!!!! He constantly stalks us throughout the whole game, he builds up enough tension... I mean like, they could have done so much with Yarnaby. But no, they just kill him off. Right after introducing him. I wish we had just focused on Yarnaby, and not all these other characters.

I mean, reading these files, there is such a missed opportunity here. I personally think they should have made the main antagonist Yarnaby, he stalks us the entire game. And then, they could have played into this “domesticated dog or cat” thing and maybe had us domesticate Yarnaby? And that could have been the big chapter plot twist- the player then going in to defeat the prototype with Yarnaby and Doey on our side...? Or if they didn't want to do that, why make his death so lame?? Why not cut him in half or something, it feels so obvious!! and then to have the twist be that The Doctor actually owns Yarnaby and he's pissed and that's the cliff hanger we leave Chapter 4 on!!!? Like SO MUCH POTENTIAL!!!!

But no, instead of just committing to one character, they decided to waste three. Justice for all three semi antags in this chapter:(

After reading the dmc 4 novel, I find it so interesting how Nero acknowledges that Dante is related to him, but doesn't question to how closely related they are. And honestly, I can't really blame him.

In the novel, it's mentioned by both Nero and Dante’s povs of them theorizing that Sparda, the demon that lived in the human world for many centuries, could potentially have other descendants other than his sons and grandson. It wouldn't be a huge stretch to think that a guy that walked on earth for sm years could've had other partners and families before meeting Eva. Nero also seems to not really care about how closely related he is to Dante, only that they're definitely descendants of Sparda.

I don't think Nero thought of them to be closer bc of how he was raised in an orphanage, along with the culture within Fortuna and how he feels like an outcast. When Sanctus told Nero about the white haired man (Vergil) visiting him all those years ago is most likely Nero's father, Nero didn't really care. It couldn't be Dante bc Sanctus knows who Dante is, while with Vergil, he was just a mysterious figure to him. Nero only cares about Credo and Kyrie bc they were the only ones there for him. He was abandoned as a baby, and while we know Vergil didn't know of his existence, we still don't know what happened to his mother. The chance that she didn't want Nero is still very much possible and throughout the novel, Nero kinda leans in on that idea (especially with the whole "Everyone knows everyone in Fortuna. It would be impossible to not find out if someone was pregnant."). Nero isn't one for blood (obviously) and as long as he has Kyrie, that's all he needs, which I find sweet that Nero has someone to fall back to for anything, especially after they've both lost Credo.

actually i do think theres room for a fun(tragic) alternate reading where its not raffles that dies in knees of the gods but bunny- hes fading in and out of consciousness the whole time, losing blood, suffers a specific and severe injury; vs raffles who just (from bunny's pov) Stops Talking. and with both the novel and the last collection having a slightly different tone and being a little more objective and critical about raffles than the first two, maybe its raffles taking up the pen name

can people agree to acknowledge being hurt by religious experiences without being disrespectful to religious people like come on, there's so many Christians and Muslims suffering in impoverished countries and concentration camps and to villainize and disregard people's suffering existing because you had a bad experience is uncalled for. Not all christians are skinheads waving signs who wish people death and not all muslims are terrorists??? The same goes for other religions but I tend to see it a lot with these, calling them derogatory terms, thats just disrespectful?? Just because one group under this label treat people evil doesnt represent the people as a whole nor does it undermine someones suffering by their hands either. Like being hurt by horrible people is wrong and that crime should be called out. Completed 1am Christmas day and dear lord never again. Initial plan was to use a beanbag to add some weight to help him sit but I couldn't find any so I did perhaps the most Canadian thing I've ever done, he has a hockey puck in him 😂

Next up for my friend L: yellow guy from DHMIS

I made her the red guy last year I do not like DHMIS, any of it I've seen has been under duress but she loves it so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ he's not quite the right colours but that's what I had lol he was mostly done in September and then I got sick of him and forgot how much I still had to complete so he was finished I think 4am? the day we were getting together and reminded me how much I hate attaching things together lmao

Next my friend K: Pigeon! (+ ghostbusters and coasters)

She loves pigeons. I've been giving her something pigeon and/or cat related for years now 😂 the Ghostbusters thing is a long story about oh god probably around a decade ago now but involved K terrorizing L and when I stumbled across this pattern entirely by accident I knew I HAD to make it and now it will haunt L every time we visit K&P bc what else are friends for? 😂 Not pictured are 4 Easter themed coasters I forgot I made for K two bunnies and two chickens and they reminded me how much I do not like crocheting with cotton yarn lol. Oh and the pigeon was done mostly 5-6am and did the 2nd wing and attached them ~9:30 an hour before I had to leave the house lol

If I thought my forearms and such hurt after doing hours of knitting that's got nothing on nearly doing this all in one day. Tiny coping saw (to cut out the profile), and hours of Dremel carving, and then Dremel and hand sanding take a toll the next day lol. All the dark parts are carved out maybe 1/8"? Then a dark stain applied in the carved spaces, then the lighter brown stain varnish applied to the entire piece. The stains themselves are random ones I picked off the shelf lmao for the image I just transfered a png of I think the characters helmet which is the game launch icon? All I know is it's a videogame that K said P loved 😂 completed mostly in one day 2 days before gifting, bottle opener insert and magnets glued in around midnight day of bc I had to wait for stuff to dry lol
