BLs that deal with homophobia (internal or external) and rough coming out sequences

Began Beginning from Myanmar is all about this. It's not a BL I would necessarily recommend but it is interesting for many reasons. Both leads are dealing with massive internalize homophobia, among other issues.

Similarly: Like in the Movies and Tie the Not from the Philippines.

And Goodbye Mother and Nation's Brother from Vietnam.

From Thailand

To Sir, With Love - witnessing his family's massive homophobia that results in major tragedy as a child is what drives our main character's whole personality and self hatred. Massive trigger warning.

Until We Meet Again - the pair in the past, of course, it's the driving trauma of the relationship reincarnated. Massive trigger warning.

I Feel You Linger In the Air - fear of being caught is a through line in this drama.

More modern set stuff:

City of Stars deals with having to leave the closet as a super star. So does Close Friend Season 2 a little. The OhmFluke pair also deals with coming out to parents. Love Stage!! (Thailands version) contains one couple that chooses to remain closeted for the good of a career and another that risks it.

Moonlight Chicken - mostly about self hatred and difficulty in being out, to the point where his young nephew challenges him on it and provides a foil.

Also, ya know, TharnType and Why R U. Both have self hated and challenging coming outs because of trauma and daddy issues.

Dark Blue Kiss - Kao is terrified of being outed and it's used to blackmail him.

Similarly although he is out of Ae, Pete is being abused and blackmailed because he is gay in Love By Chance. Also Ae doesn't manage to come out... yet.

I Told Sunset About You - of course.

My Gear and Your Gown final episodes contain homophobic (or are they?) parents.

Second Chance heavily implies that there is something going on with Paper's inability to accept Fah.

Similarly Gene accepting Sib in Lovely Writer.

I'm pretty sure there's a ton of homophobia at the back end of My Tee, but honestly it's been years sicne I watched that mess.

Charming little pulp 21 Day Theory deals with quite a bti of this, but our main character has a lovely gay uncle to guide the way.

"Punch the homophobe" my favorite trope of all time, happens in Oxygen. But otherwise they neatly circumvent the patriarchs objection by defacto adopting a child to inherit.

TonhonChonlatee is all about one characters inability to acept his own queerness as encouraged by his homophobic family and various other evil characters.

My Only 12% actively tackles and calls out cultural homophobia and damaging misrepresentations.

"Why does everyone think that both of them are strange? If it's not wrong, why does everyone hurt?"

The show he's talking about is Thailand's first proto-BL, love of Siam and it is about an inability to come out.

From Japan

Life: Love on the Line - it's parental disgust and personal self hatred and paranoia that breaks them up (they get back together but he as to get over it)

Similarly His - is a kind of reunion romance after self-homophobia drove one half of the pair to marry someone else.

Actually the original series with the same characters, His the series, also deals with self acceptance around gayness, and it's subtle (Japan) but it's pretty clear one of them was kicked out of/ or left his previous school because he got outed. (Light on Me references a similar situation, but it's ultra subtle.)

If It's With You also kinda falls into this category. Not sure these can be called "dealing with" it tho, more side stepping and alluding to it.

Tokyo in April is - yeah it's kinda the whole thing from one half of this pair

What Did You Eat Yesterday also has a coming out to the parents thread throughout, and a coming out at work thing, but it's not really the point of the show.

From Korea

Most Korean BL are gonna be out. The specialize in the bubble. Although a case could be made for Love For Love's Sake and Love Class. And, see comment, Jazz for Two.

One noted exception is Just Friends which is a short piece about coming out to mom while on leave from the military. This is one of Korea's earliest BL pieces and not strictly BL, but it's fascinating in that neither theme (military nor coming out) would reall be reused again.

From Taiwan

My Tooth Your Love - has a kinda different take and we aren't sure, as viewers whether it's because he's gay or because he's not doing what the Patriarch wishes. But trigger warning for [physical abuse.

DNA Says Love You deals with this and other forms of queerphobia during the later half. Slow start but I do love this show.

Faded is a propaganda piece (pro marriage equality) which is all about coming out to a parent.

In H4CTY Xing Si (of the side couple) is having a hard time coming out but that's complied by the fact that he's fucking his stepbrother, it's a mess, bit I enjoy them - v problematic couple tho.

Papa & Daddy actually has a coming out sequence (GASP!) where the parents don't take it well as does Love is Science? (sides) - but the later is mostly because disaster bi is also baby daddy.

Red Balloon, of course, and it's sibling movie Your Name Engraved Herein are kinda all about self loathing and suffering because of gayness and lack of acceptance.

Unknown is certainly tackling some of this.

Yesss I’m alive, I’m just more active on Twitter these days. Just… irl keeps piling shit on, and I’m so monumentally stressed out that the 2-sentence freak-out format over there has been easier for me.

That said, I AM STILL REELING FROM THAT TRAILER. Jayce’s wrist… with the gemstone burned into it, what the fuck?!?! I have a feeling the gemstone is going to have activated during the attack, possibly to create a shield or protect him in some way. Cuz if it was burned in by natural means, aka fire/extremely high heat, he would have a LOT more scarring/burns.

And still no Viktor but… Viktor adjacent crumbs?? Like, those people with runes carved into them?! Is that the start of the glorious evolved?!?! One of them had a foot just like his! And that Coronavirus lookin ass orb, that HAS to be the Hexcore! But it has obviously evolved (haha) even further… V, what did you do???

And finally, this.

There’s some discussion over on Twit on whether or not this is the Hexgate, but I think it 100% is. Cuz we’ve all pretty much come to the conclusion that this, whatever it is, is Viktor’s base, for lack of a better word, and those huts are the shimmer addicts/Glorious Evolved. And like… Piltover is at war with Zaun. And Piltover has the means to crush them, but the only reason they do is because A) they are a prosperous and wealthy city that can afford just about whatever they want/need to crush a rebellion, and it’s all because of those Hexgates, and B) they can ship armies in within a nanosecond. So what’s the fastest way to cripple them right out of the gate? To level the playing field?

Take out the Hexgate. And there’s one person who knows intimately how to do that. And I truly think he will. Whether it’s a strategic move in the war effort or a broken-hearted act of aggression against Jayce (or a bit of both) remains to be seen. But my personal opinion is that Viktor will take out the Hexgate. He won’t be alone when he does it, it’s too ambitious of a task. So who will he ally with? A chem-baron? (Renataaaaaaaaaa plzzzzz), an army of cultists? Jinx and the people who have rallied behind her as a symbol for Zaun’s rebellion? Idk, but I’m freakin out over here.

Anyhoo, thanks for checking in on me, I know I’ve dropped off the map a little. Just need life to fuckin CHILL with the major life changes, it’s killing me. Until then, I’m clinging to Arcane s2 like a lifeline 😩

Oh right, I forgot I made reference sheets of my

Krang OCs!

That's right! A species of aliens from my favorite media, RoTTMNT, is one of my favourites, and thus has a bunch of OCs from the species! Only four of them are really developed, and I'll introduce you to them!

(Ignore the height measurements where I mention the turtle brothers, because it's now outdated! This is also a very big post, so there's a lot of text, and even in some of the images too.)

Now let's get introduced to... Petrol!

(2023 April 7th)

Right, he looks more or less... Basic for a Krang at this stage. I have developed them way more now!

(2023 April 9th)

Now there he is! A young Krang with a kind heart, he isn't much of a threat like a singular Krang, but he's a swimmer! A formidably quick one too, and CAN fight while swimming, though their vision is unfortunately so bad they see the clearest at 2 centimetres away, almost one inch vision! Which is why he has goggles whenever he typically goes out to explore.

As he grew up within multiple generations of his raccoon family, he slowly forgot more about the Krang species, and because he was very young when the Krang were sucked in the Prison Dimension. He also gained markings resembling a raccoon's and is able to communicate with raccoons fluently. Yes, Petrol is capable of chirping, growling, barking and hissing, like an actual raccoon does.

Oh, and the easily combustible part? He pretty much combusts into flames whenever he gets scared. Mostly because he digests a lot of oils and gasolines, the perfect ingredients for bursting into flames.

"Where is his exosuit?", you may ask. Well, back when he narrowly escaped from being sucked in along the many other Krangs, he just abandoned his own exosuit, and in return being destroyed in the Prison Dimension from the chaos that happened where only three Krangs managed to survive from the aftermath. Now he has a custom one, made by none other than Nix. Or Kaos as an alternative.

No, wait, this is the wrong Nix.

There they are!

(2023 April 11th)

As expected and obvious from their looks, Kaos is the inventor of the four Krangs. Oddly enough, he distances himself a LOT from Krang technology, to the point he would only use that technology only if necessary. Quite a feral yet impish Krang, they love to bring their explosives with them no matter if it's a mission or any relaxing activities. And no wonder they made the bomb 💣 (Uxitron or UX∅3) by themselves, as they like inventing! They've made customized exosuits, machinery, weapons, and never forget, the littlest things like their own goggles, the artificial antenna they added in their own head and bombs.

They invent so much and experiment things, though sometimes not all of it was a success. Because of one failed experiment exploding into pieces, Kaos gained a permanent and thick scar on their face, especially affecting their left eye to the point it cannot constrict no matter the lighting conditions. Essentially, Nix has mydriasis in this case. In order to make it easier for themselves while working, they made goggles which both the lenses are adjusted with filters in order to allow them to see microscopic bits and inventions more easily, as well as controlling the amount of light that enters in the left goggle.

Despite their markings resembling explosions, one of them resembles a flower. A time where they first lived on Earth. They love hills covered in pretty flowers, and even still loves them, as they have pots and vases of plants in their shared home. Not in their own laboratory, of course.

Back when they used to be apart of Krang 01's/Leader's army, they admired him to such an extreme extent that they would do ANYTHING to please him, make him satisfied with their own actions despite not being seen as anything but an engineer. But nowadays they haven't forgotten Krang 01/Leader entirely, but doesn't even bring him up in a conversation other than to mention how they used to admire him.

Who else would be quite disappointed for Nix to admit they used to admire Krang 01/Leader?

Vemirath, or Ven for short.

(2023 April 11th)

A powerful and formidable ex-warrior, Vemirath is NOT someone you should underestimate. She isn't feared for no reason by her opponents. She can clearly pin down her opponents who are almost the same size like her, as well as tear open buildings with ease. Despite this, like a rattlesnake, she also has a tender side of herself despite struggling to show emotions other than anger. She is a primary caretaker of Petrol, as well as his role-model. She cares deeply for her allies and family, but does she spare some for Krang 01/Leader?

None. She would find it better if she could've killed him with her own tendrils, tear him apart and stab him repeatedly. If she wished something to never exist in the universe, she would immediately say Krang 01/Leader with no hesitation. The only other thing she dislikes heavily are pickles. Pickles. 🥒 How? It reminds her of Krang 01/Leader for some reason.

And to talk about her third eye, it has miosis. Constantly a vertical slit, not even dilating at all. It doesn't improve her vision and visual depth too much other than a slight change. It's not much of a bother for her either, so she still kept it even when she was young.

It was clear Krang 01/Leader didn't like her much either, so it was a mutual feeling, though Ven's was more extreme.

The only one who managed to reach Krang 01's/Leader's ranks and role is Forth.

(2023 April 15th)

Despite being blind, she has sonars implanted on the sides of her head, allowing her to see her surroundings in a way she never had done before.

This made her more formidable, even as she is a very quick fighter. She can now be more precise in fighting her opponents and targets, yet smart enough to act like she can only hear, not "see" her surroundings. She clearly is strong after all, and has a lot of potential for her future in the army.

Despite being the highest rank of most Krangs, she loves getting herself into dangerous situations, as it's thrilling for her but also a bit more exciting than being a potential leader together with Krang 01/Leader. But the stress and concentration she tried to muster in order to focus more better has made her tendrils unable to relax naturally like others, always in a similarly jointed shape. It hurts for her to truly straighten her limbs, even if they're quite flexible.

She is also a constant smiler, rarely frowning at all mostly because she feels more relaxed smiling.

Even while she is the one who frequently explores and encounters more living beings than her fellow family (excluding Petrol), she still likes being in Nix's laboratory, listening to the machines working and moving to function. She finds the sounds relaxing.

(2023 April 17th)

Here are some personality notes for my characters in case you write them! Unfortunately I do not know how to properly write dialogue, so you can pretty much feel free to write dialogue in a way that you think could fit them!

More information the better!

Unfortunately I can't add any more images, BUT I can write even MORE information! So here is incoming bonus information for the four Krangs!

Petrol: He would absolutely adore being around Michelangelo, as he's the bubbliest, friendly and loveliest turtle he has ever met. He hasn't tried drawing before, but he will gladly practice together with Mikey!

Nix/Kaos: They are easily capable of fighting four opponents at the same time with a melee weapon. And he would love to work alongside Donatello with inventing things as well as blow things up for FUN!

Vemirath: She will slowly lose her patience and herself if you keep talking about Krang 01/Leader. She will snap if you dare say a word that implies or even means that you admire him. She would rather hear him say he's a gift rather than hear someone else think he's a good Leader or someone admirable.

Forth: She has a thing for Vemirath. (Not elaborating.)

why ravage beat prowl in that waterlogged cat poll

(Note: I don’t think Ravage is much of a waterlogged cat, but I also don’t think that Prowl is one either.)

First of all, Ravage would scratch and hiss about a surprise hug because it’s made clear throughout all of IDW that beastformers who are not big and terrifying to average sized mechs have to put up with loads of unwanted touching just because they’re adorable and pet-sized, despite the fact that they deserve bodily autonomy just as much as everyone else does.

Prowl probably doesn’t have people always grabbing at him and trying to pet him and skritch his ears and calling him things like ‘poppet’.

But there is one very important very bad thing that happens to Ravage in the comics, aside from the general Shit Life Syndrome that most Cybertronians have.

SPOILERS FOR MTMTE ENDING under cut (and is anyone surprised that I’m the one answering this? Lord I hope not.)

(attn @pits-of-kaos = the post wasn’t rebloggable which I didn’t find out till I got done writing this and the damn poll was already over! but Ravi won without my propaganda!)

Ravage gets shoved into the proverbial refrigerator at the end of MTMTE and both the reasoning and execution (haha) of Ravage’s death are colossally dumb as well as unnecessary.

Ravage is Megatron’s only confidant and therefore arguably the most important person in Megatron’s world. The writers never say that Ravage and Megatron are amicae, but that’s almost the only possible explanation for the fact that Ravage can slap Megatron across the face with claws out, and Megatron will not only not kill Ravage, but will simply grab and hold the offending paw until the cat calms down.

(The other possible explanation is something that only Riptide ever notices in-universe, which is that if you are willing to ignore the fact that Ravage is cat-shaped, because Ravage passes the Harkness Test with flying colours, it’s possible to look back at the relationship history of the relationships between Megatron, Ravage and Soundwave throughout the war and conclude that they are or at least once were all in love with each other and doing whatever it is that married robots in IDW actually do, which canon never tells us.)

Riptide asks Ravage which one of the two Ravage would choose, and gets asked if he’s feeling suicidal, which isn’t an answer.

So here we are at the end of the MTMTE run.

Megatron has made a vow of pacifism (which is not even slightly sus despite the fact that he made it right after a psychic attack from a villain who activates your internal guilt to incapacitate you), and swore that he will never hurt another living thing. From then on, he only plays a support role in the Lost Light’s battles. He won’t even touch a gun.

One could argue that he isn’t fully sincere, because the next time he gets psychic-attacked he yeets Minimus across the room, but whatever.

Anyhow, Megatron and his friends have all been marooned on the Necroworld, and they’re waiting for the DJD to kill them. The DJD also have Deathsaurus’ Warworlders backing them up, because Tarn has decided that he’s going to run the Decepticons now and Dezza’s going to be his warleader. Or figurehead. It’s not clear which. In Japanese G1 Dezza was Meg’s successor as Emperor of Destruction, though.

And JRo et al have written themselves into a corner.

Megatron won’t fucking fight. I don’t think this should have been that big a problem. They had Ultra Magnus, Rodimus, Cyclonus, Tailgate who can throw shuttles at people, and Drift down there, to name just a few. That’s a lot of heavy hitters. But they’ve also been hinting for ages and ages that Megatron’s intradimensionally fucked up frame is hiding a portal through which he can manifest black holes or antimatter or whatever.

It’s not like antimatter is the only thing that can kill DJD members. They’re scary because they have no brakes on them and will do fucking anything to anyone, not because they’re invulnerable to things like bullets and swords and energy weapons.

Somehow, the writers have to get Megatron to fight, because Chekhov’s got a gun. So Ravage and Megatron have a fight about why Megatron won’t fight, and Ravage is ashamed of Megatron, and stalks off all by catself into trouble, because that was a sensible thing for the most pragmatic person aboard the LL to do, wasn’t it?

Tarn, of course, finds Ravage.

There’s a single joint in Ravage’s midsection that joins Ravage’s front/top half to Ravage’s back/bottom half, and literally nobody this cat has ever fought before has noticed this massive vulnerability.

Tarn does, though, and he rips Ravage in half.

(Seriously, it’s ONE joint. The MMC third-party IDW Ravage figure even duplicated it so that you can split Ravage in half for Tarn to hold, except that they’re not stupid, and you can snap your figure back together and Ravage is good as new.)

Megatron sees Ravage in pieces and in pain, and this motivates Megatron to break his vow, and go out and obliterate Tarn and the rest of the DJD with his fancy antimatter trick, and steal a Decepticon symbol and put it on his chest.

Despite being Ratchet, Ratchet can’t manage to successfully reattach the back half of a cat to the front half of a cat, even though Transformers are not supposed to be irretrievably dead unless the T-cog, brain module and spark have all been destroyed, and while the T-cog could have been in the joint, Ravage is still talking, and therefore presumably has both brain and spark.

As a result of this, Megatron returns just in time for Ravage to paw the Decepticon symbol, murmur something very ambiguous about not changing back (from Con to Bot? from Bot to Con? who the fuck knows) and literally die in Megatron’s arms.

Cut to across the galaxy at Sanctuary Station. Soundwave falls to his knees clutching at his chest. (This is something that only happens to TFs if their spark-twin sibling or their spark-bound conjunx dies, but Soundwave being a telepath is the generally preferred unnecessary explanation.)

This is classic stuffed-in-a-fridge bullshit. There was no reason for Ravage to die. Megatron could have taken a vow of pacifism later, or not at all. Ravage could have been repaired. Ratchet’s clinic was in Rodion when both Drift and Ravage were street people there, so there’s no bloody reason he shouldn’t know how Ravage is wired. The writers kill Ravage in order to give Megatron even more manpain, as if he didn’t have enough already, and probably also because they want to Strongly Imply CosWave (eurgh).

this lovable man is by your side throughout the entire birthing process

he was there for your back pains, your baby kicking, your morning sicknesses, and your confusing hormonal mood swings

so why wouldn't he be there for the moment of truth

you are the love of his life, so he hates the fact that you're in an immense amount of pain, but he also understands there is nothing he can do but be there for you

and that's exactly what he's going to do

your contractions were starting become closer and closer one night. kyojuro kept offering to take you to shinobu, but you'd constantly reassure him that you were fine

then your water broke

"hey, kyojuro..." you were looking down at the puddle on the floor. 'maybeee...he should take me to shinobu...' you thought to yourself

"yes, my love!" he was quick to respond, ready to cater to your every need

"i think my water just broke..."

"..."

this man's strength never ceases to amaze you.

kyojuro lifts you into his arms, and he runs full speed to the butterfly estate for everyone's help there.

they were quick to get you into a room, and you both were waiting for the time to push

shinobu informed you that it's common to still experience contractions after your water breaking, and unfortunately, you did

and they were excruciating

and poor kyojuro, tried to help

"breathe, my love," he kept one hand on your back and the other held yours as you slowly paced around the room. "remember what shinobu taught you in birthing class?!"

you gripped kyojuro's hand tightly, clenching your teeth in pain "i remember thinking this shit was stupid, and i was right!"

the master, kamaboko squad, other hashira, and (unknown to you or kyojuro) kyojuro's father and senjuro, were sitting in the lobby, supporting you both

although they were scared from your screaming

poor kyojuro kept a smile on his face, but he was inwardly panicking. he kept his composure for you, as you're the one in the most pain, even though you're crushing his hand right now.

but it's all downhill from here, and in a few hours, your baby will be here. in a few hours, he will be an active father, and that is exciting and terrifying.

after the contractions subsided, kyojuro was able to coax you onto the bed, gently rubbing your stomach and feeding you ice chips when you became thirsty

then, the moment of truth came when shinobu returned and announced that it was time to push

and it was painful

kyojuro, bless his heart, was still getting his hand crushed by you, but he fought through the pain

he did, however, keep cheering for you like you were at some sort of sporting event. which didn't last long after you were so quick to tell him to shut up

which he understood and responded with a quick, enthusiastic , "yes ma'am!" while keeping his grin on his face, even though his hand is still in pain

after a while his hand started to go numb, which was perfectly fine with him. he just wishes he could numb your pain

but he stays incredibly strong for you, and you couldn't be more grateful

you're exhausted, and the head and shoulders were the most difficult parts to push out

you're honestly not sure how women have the strength to birth six children at once

but all of the pain and exhaustion was worth it in the end when you finally met your bundle of joy, and shinobu happily announces,

"it's a girl!"

her loud cries fill the room, showing great signs of the use of her lungs. shinobu took her over to be cleaned and going to find comfortable clothes for your bundle of joy

in their absence, you wanted nothing more than to rest, but with all of the blood and bodily fluid that comes with having a baby

the desire to take a shower exceeded your desire to rest

kyojuro helped you to the bathing area, and was even sweet enough to help you bathe, and you didn't protest

kyojuro was ecstatic that your baby had finally arrived, and he couldn't stop talking about her

after helping you out of the bath, kyojuro brought your more comfortable clothes from home that he thought would come in handy

after helping you back into bed, which shinobu had cleaned while you were bathing, you and kyojuro were able to meet your newly cleaned baby

and i tell you kyojuro was in love

your little girl was wide awake, looking between you and her father. after you both cooed quietly to her, she smiled, quickly recognize the voices from when she was still in your womb

"so you were the one causing all that commotion in there," kyojuro stated gently, caressing his daughter's head full of hair that resembled her father's

she held your facial features, there being no doubt that she was yours. but, much to your excitement, she possessed kyojuro's eyes

"so," kyojuro's voice came out quiet, soft, cherishing your peaceful moments with your new arrival. "are you still certain of her name, my love?"

smiling gently at your babbling daughter, you nodded, "i am."

kyojuro hummed in delight, "i'm glad," he gets up from the bed, pressing a kiss to both yours and the baby's head. "i'm going to tell everyone of her arrival! they're all waiting!"

"the baby's here! and she's beautiful!"

kyojuro was proud to announce the birth of his daughter to his fellow demon slayer, master, and(much to his surprise) his father and brother. mitsuri was the first to jump up in excitement.

"oh, congratulations!" everyone crowed around him, and kagaya was next to speak in his usual calm tone.

"how's y/n?" kyojuro's smile grew wider.

"understandably exhausted, but great," his chest puffed out in pride. "they're both great!"senjuro ran up to his brother and hugged his waist.

"so," he looked to his older brother with contained excitment. "does she have a name yet?"

kyojuro paused.

when you broke the news of your pregnancy, you both came to an agreement. if the baby were to be a boy, kyojuro would decide a name, and if you had a girl, then you'd decide the name. and you did.

with his father present, kyojuro felt hesitant to reveal his beloved daughter's name. it's a name their family could never forget, and you felt as if your daughter would carry it with pride in the future.

"well," kyojuro patted his brother's head. "y/n thought it'd be fitting to name her, ruka."

senjuro's eyebrows lifted in surprise, pleasant surprise. he adored the idea of his niece acquiring the name of their late mother. they looked to their father for his reaction, knowing the grief for the loss of his wife strongly remained.

shinjuro remained stoic.

the youngest rengoku felt unease creep up his spine, watching as his father took long strides towards him and his older brother. senjuro gulped as his father lifted his hand, expecting him to strike kyojuro's cheek. but..

sjinuro placed a hand on kyojuro's shoulder, giving his eldest son a proud nod.

"i'm sure your daughter will carry ruka's name well," he gave his son's shoulder a gentle squeeze.

kyojuro felt more prideful than before.

after everyone filed out of the butterfly estate(with the exception of his father and his little brother) paid you and ruka a visit, kyojuro lead them to the comfortable room you and little ruka were resting.

shinjuro and senjuro wanted to meet her without the chaos of everyone else in the room, so they opted to wait until everyone had left.

upon the arrival to your room, all the three males felt their hearts swell at the sight.

ruka had been cleaned, her lowering half swaddled in a soft blanket since she loves to make grabby hands at you and grip your finger into her tiny hand. a small stocking cap sat snuggly atop her head. her cute laughs filled the room, babbling off nonsense to you.

"oh, really?" you asked as ruka continued her babbling, smiling happily once she heard your loving voice reply to her. "i know, tell me about it." you couldn't help but smile down at her.

you didn't even notice other people in the room. you and ruka were lost in your own little world, neither of you understanding what was being said, but your happiness was unmatched in this moment.

"y-y/n-nii," at the mention of your name, your attention broke away from ruka. you smiled at your little brother in law.

"senjuro, hi," you waved them inside. "well, don't just stand there. come in and meet her."

kyojuro rushed excitedly to your side, carefully getting into the bed next to you. he kissed your cheek, "how're my girls doing?"

his girls.

that's what you two were now, and it made your heart warm and fuzzy. you kissed his cheek before resting your head on his shoulder.

"just fine," you smiled as senjuro scurried to the bed, peering in wonder at ruka's small form in your arms. "we've been talking an awful lot for a while." you patted the empty space by your legs, and senjuro was quick to fill the empty space. "would you like to hold her?" he looked up at you, hopeful.

"m-may i?" you carefully handed ruka over, granting him his answer. senjuro was eager, but handled her with amplified care. as he quietly cooed at your daughter, shinjuro finally came forward.

your relationship with him wasn't strong by any means, but you knew shinjuro didn't hate you. far from it, actually. he would've made it a goal to chase you off from his son if he had. while he didn't treat them as they deserved, they are still his sons, and he loves them dearly.

his late wife would kill him if he didn't.

while he gave you a hard time, much like he does with everyone else, you held a special place in his heart. the moment he saw your interactions with kyojuro, senjuro, hell even himself, you reminded him so much of ruka.

and, he felt, that's exactly what kyojuro needed in a wife.

his mother would be proud.

despite this, you had to admit, he still made you slightly nervous when he approached. he kneeled, reaching your eye-level.

"y/n," shinjuro's voice was gentle, catching you and kyojuro off guard. "i can say with great confidence that your daughter will truly become a remarkable woman," the man's usual hard expression softened, gently placing a hand atop your head. "with a woman of your caliber as her mother, there isn't a doubt in my mind that she will. and...i couldn't be more proud to have you as a daughter."

you and kyojuro were both rendered speechless. neither of you have witnessed shinjuro like this, and maybe it was your hormones, but it nearly moved you to tears.

you've been married to kyojuro for years, and not once has shinjuro ever acknowledged you as a daughter.

before you could stop yourself, you threw your arms around shinjuro's neck, almost certain that he would throw you off.

but he didn't.

you certainly caught him off guard, and he was hesitant in deciding what to do. while he didn't return your hug fully, shinjuro rested his hand on the back of your head and held for however long you needed.

kyojuro was over the moon.

he was well aware of the fact that you wanted his father's acceptance, and now, you've got it.

after pulling away, shinjuro looked to his youngest son before standing up, "come along, senjuro. we must leave." shinjuro gestured for his son to hand your daughter back.

"awe," senjuro whined while gently handing ruka to you, pouting as he followed his father to the door. "may we come back next week?"

shinjuro looked to you and kyojuro for approval, which you both gave without hesitation. senjuro smiled, waving goodbye to the three of you.

now, it was you, kyojuro, and little ruka left in the room. the exhaustion of giving birth finally caught up with you as you were granted a moment of peace, and the same could be said for kyojuro and ruka.

your husband wrapped his arms around you, pulling you and ruka closer to him. his cheek pressed against the top of your head, your head rested securely under his and held in both of your arms.

you and ruka were fast asleep, and kyojuro smiled down at the both of you before allowing his heavy eyes to come to a close. pulling you closer to his chest, you'd subconsciously curled into kyojuro's side, causing a smile to spread across his face.

kyojuro has his two greatest treasures in his arms, and he couldn't be happier.

So..after ranking every skylander, no I will not do enemies or trapped bosses, I can kinda get a method with them

Magic are based on religions and the arcane

Undead are often dead or malicious

Life are based on flora and fauna

Fire are based on fire, magma, and explosives

Water are based on ice and marine life

Earth are based on rocks and Crystal's with a few rough boys

Air is based on flight, avians or weather

Tech is based on machinery, metal and demolition and man made things

Light is based on holy and benevolent forces

Dark is based conversely on lovecraftian and malicious things

I originally intended on looking at all scrapped skylanders too but I realized there were too many so I only covered the one that was most well known scrapped skylanders

I also noticed some of the sensei's in imaginators were really independent of their element

And another thing was that some skylanders were dropped. In the original generation they had 4 skylanders and then replaced one for giants then again for swap force but the ones they keeped were given ultimate versions that sometimes looked wholly different and then in superchargers some where brought back again ang given new armor.

Why? Why must you hurt me? I don't want to chose. I don't want to do anything but love them deeply and let them be together. So I get one. I will make every other choice. But this one? This one is a polyship.

Wayu= Thanu vs. Mark & Kit

This one is impossible because Mark needs Kit more than he needs WAyu but Wayu needs Mark more than he needs Thanu.So I'm mkaing the executive decision that Yu gets them both. And that's that. Mark cannot be without Kit.

Masuk= Tir (had he been alive) vs. Jia

Zero hesitation. I love Tir. I adore his chemistry with Tir more than with Jia. I am sure that if Tir had lived that Masuk would have stayed with him and they would have been together in a HAE. So... Yeah, gotta be Tir.

Mon= Team vs. Puth

I'll be honest, I'll typically go canon if the pairing ends happily and isn't too bad in the process. I enjoy the canon pairings. Yeah, I sometime go against them. But Mon and Team turned out to be really cute in the end. They grew on me so much.

Puth= Kaeng vs. Payu

I weep openly that I cannot make this poly. But I do think, in the end, that Puth made the right choice with Kaeng. They knew each other and loved each other and it was adorable in the end. Poor Payu, though. He deserves them both.

Zon= Saifah vs. Tutor

I love Saifah and Zon together. Tutor would be cute but I just don't think Zon could be everything Tutor needs the way Fighter can be. And could anyone be as sweet and soft with Zon as Saifah? No way.

Fiat= Leo vs. Type

Mutual pining always wins. ALWAYS. And these two idiots deserve each other anyway, in their non-negotiated kinky relationship that they kinda of fell into ass over teakettle.

Chon= Tonhon vs. Na

My giant lug of an idiot deserves his tiny Chon. I love them together. I still wish the show hadn't just completely fallen apart in the last like 20 minutes with that pointless tiem skip. Siiiigh.

Third= Khai vs. Two

Honestly? Yeah. I would have loved Third and Two to end up together. They would have been adorable. I'd feel worse for Un than for Khai, tbh. Un deserved Two for all his pining. But Two and Third would have been the softest and cutest little couple!

Pi= Mork vs. Mueang Nan

*ahem* This has been a PSA: Mork will never win unless the contest is 'worst character I've yet seen in a BL' and even then I'd hate to call him a winner. Mueng Nan might be an ass who isn't good at most things and still ignores Pi's needs and chooses to support all of Mork's creeper tendencies... but at least he's not actively abusive.

Duen= Bohn vs. Frong

Honestly, Duen and Bohn should have broken up and Duen should have gone ahead and dating Frong second to find out what a healthy relationship is actually like. Just imagine if he learned about that.

Bunn= Tann vs. Inspector M

Bun and Tan are such an amazing couple. And Inspector M has his own doctor! No way am I breaking them up.

Zhao Zi= Jack vs. Shao Fei

Now, I can see this. But Jack is just perfect for his little darling. How can I possibly break them up?

Shi Lei= Yu Zhen vs. Gang & SiQi

As much as I support Gang and SiQi kidnapping and threatening to seduce Shi Lei, it's entirely in the favor of getting him together with Yu Zhen. After all, they belong together. They love each other so much it hurts.

Hin= Gene vs. Tum

Tum 100%. Gene has his Nubsib, even if their prospects long term seem questionable, but Hin deserves his Tum. Especialyl considering how Tiffy treated Tum during most of the show... yeah. No. Hina dn Tum deserve each other in the best way!

Gene= Nubsib vs. Aey

I agree that Gene and Nubsib might be worrying in terms of truly staying together long term with their communication never seeming to improve... but Aey is so damaged that I have trouble seeing in a healthy relationship of any sort.

Shi Gu= Xia De (the twin) vs. Hao Ting

I'll go canon on this one. Mostly because I don't really remember it? Sorry, this is the cursed History one and I've only partially watched it one a long time ago.

Tian= Phupha vs. Longtae

Yeah, sorry Longtae, but Phupha is absolutely perfect for Tian and there can be no arguments. Love you though, boo!

Kao= Pete vs. Sun (DBK)

Uh. Canon wins because I never liked Sun that much?

Xingsi= Yongjie vs. Lichen & Muren

As tempting as their threesome is... actually, who am I kidding, you gave me a choice for polyship! How can I turn it down? Besides, just imagine the shenanigans they could get into as a friend group and as an adorable little triad!

I feel horrible for not picking Techno because, frankly, he deserves better than he got. But Can and Tin are such an adorable, modern couple and I just love them together.

Ichiro Yamada:

He's gonna figure out you're strong one of two ways

Either he's gonna have trouble picking something up and you go "oh don't worry" and dead lift that bitch OR

He's doing exercises and when you join him he's hella surprised at how much you can pick up

Ichiro loves that you're as active as he is!! He likes to exercise and go running in his (albeit very limited and rare) free time and he's glad to have a new running partner besides Jiro (who runs for soccer practice)

To other people on the street it's kind of unnerving to see the both of you running/jogging down the street cracking jokes and smiling like exercising isn't the worst thing ever

You both push each other to get stronger and faster!

Ichiro sometimes likes to race you back home to see who's faster (depending on if he's faster, he'll slow down so it's a tie; he's sappy okay)

★ Obviously Irinatsu likes to go get shaved ice with you! The dessert cafe he goes to with Kasugano and others is also a place he’ll go with you. But, you both also like going around town and trying sweets from street vendors as you walk through town.

Love Confession - How would they confess to their s/o?

★ If Irinatsu really likes you, then he’s open about his feelings. He’s going to drop the “I like you!” a lot during conversations, but you never take his words as anything serious. He likes you the same way that he likes Kasugano and Toma, right?

★ But the way he smiles at you with his eyes bright and the way he holds your hand for longer than a moment makes you question his true feelings.

★ It might lead to some confusion, but you would need to confront Irinatsu on what he actually feels to find out that he actually like likes you! And from then on you two will happily be together~

On Cloud Nine - What are they like when they are in love? Is it obvious for others? How do they express their feelings?

★ Irinatsu is very obvious about his feelings for you! He absolutely loves talking about you to his fellow Kao Kai members, enough to get them sick of hearing his voice (more than they already do).

★ He loves challenging you to eating shaved ice as fast as possible. You both have your own bowls and try to finish as fast as possible… of course this leads to brain freeze for the both of you!

★ Nanjo is pretty bad at admitting it. He doesn’t realize what you mean to him until you both have been getting along for a long time. Even Kitahara will point out to Nanjo how much you may mean to him, and he won’t get it. It might take something like jealousy for him to approach you and tell you that he likes you and wants you to be his.

On Cloud Nine - What are they like when they are in love? Is it obvious for others? How do they express their feelings?

★ Nanjo is pretty much the same. While pursuing you, he might have stared at you while you didn’t notice, but after you get together, his eyes are definitely softer when he sees you. Unless you see the way he looks at you, he’s pretty much the same in front of everyone else.

★ Other than his teammates, no one can obviously tell your relationship. He’s more of a private person with his affections, do small actions that you understand are the way he expresses his feelings for you.

Wild Card - A random Fluff Headcanon

★ He loves teasing you and finding ways to make you flustered. The way you react when he says something to you unexpectedly? Cute. He can’t get enough. Of course he knows when and where to draw the limits, but he just can’t help himself~

Overall review:

Surprisingly for a series that is basically two unrelated stories connected by a tenuous relationship to a preexisting cinematic universe, Dark Blue Kiss does a lot of things very right for a solid 92% of its runtime. The acting is remarkable. The production is killer. The writing is thematically complex and dense. And then it…ends.

Before the series even begins it's already good. The opening credits? A whole bop. Soap opera realness. Like Lovely Writer (2021), it's a never-skip. It also directs our attention to important visual elements in the series, which we'll get to soon enough.

Our first lead couple, Pete and Kao, are established before the events of the series, and their plot follows the highs and lows of their relationship as it faces threats from Pete's jealous anger to Kao's difficulty coming out to his friends and family…and also the überthreat of Non, an absolute teenage menace hellbent on destruction. These lead actors have worked together in these roles in several projects, and their chemistry is captivating, even when one of their characters (usually Pete!) is driving me up the wall. Their first kiss in the pool is a major milestone for the underwater kiss industrial complex, which i'm choosing to believe without additional research began as a BL television trope here.

The second lead couple are actually my favorite both narratively and thematically, and they have quite a bit of effort to put in before they get together. Sun and Mork are very different personalities, and the one major trait they have in common is their incredible stubbornness, which certainly does not help them work through their clashing ideas of what love looks like. Mork is a sweetheart with a brittle tough guy shell, while Sun is an indefatigable perfectionist who gives me anxiety. Sun hires Mork as a barista near the beginning of the series, which almost activates my extreme discomfort with the boss-employee romance trope but for the fact that it's largely an attempt to keep Mork from going homeless without insulting his pride. Watching them negotiate boundaries in their frenemies dynamic is a treat, right up until Sun fucks it up. But we're not in a rush to get there just yet.

Rain and Manow are a pretty minor C-pairing, but i like them! They don't do a ton thematically like our A-pairings do, but sometimes heterosexuals deserve rights anyway. Rain is a loyal, big-hearted dork with a crush on Manow, and Manow is probably a Pisces a sensitive and dedicated ingénue who has a crush on Mork until she finds out he's gay, at which point she gets Rain as a participation trophy. It's surprising how much personality they're each imbued with given their very limited screentime, and i like that once they get together, they have the fewest problems of any of the couples here. It's thanks to Rain and Mork's initial defense of Manow from generic Street Assailants™ that most of the A2 plot happens at all. And Mork is a good wingman to Rain in this subplot, because he is perfect.

Alright, let's tackle some of the big themes Dark Blue Kiss chooses to focus on. The first major theme that jumped out at me: You cannot maintain a relationship without open and honest communication. This one is fairly simple on its surface, and it's most obviously hammered home by Pete and Kao, but as the plot progresses, their story keeps adding new corollary elements. So while it's obvious that Kao lying to Pete about always prioritizing his feelings is going to fuck them over in the long term, it's also not entirely his fault that he feels this pressure: You cannot have honest communication without understanding, and they both seem to be missing some key piece of what is making the other tick. Pete in particular makes this harder at every turn by letting his paranoid jealousy and anger escalate into a war against a literal teenage boy. You can't have honest communication if you're never willing to trust. But of course, he's not completely wrong! Trust has been violated, and Kao knows it. You can't build trust on a foundation of lies. But wait…isn't that the initial theme? That's right! This is a vicious cycle! And the narrative understands that the thing about vicious cycles is they tend to require massive disruptions to correct, which is why the scandal where Kao gets accused of molesting Non goes hard in the paint to force them to do something. And if Kao's character seems very passive in that situation, it's because the first failure of communication started with Pete, and narratively he's gotta put in the work to fix it.

As for the second major theme, concerning violence, nonviolence, and justice, i found it a little more interesting just because it was unexpected. This theme is carried primarily by our second lead couple, where Sun is our lawful neutral champion of liberal nonviolence and Mork is a bit of a vigilante figure. At the beginning of their arc, we see they both have some valid points: Mork (and Rain) use violence to defend Manow against generic Street Assailants™ (which is good), and Sun is opposed to the injuries that Mork (and Rain) are likely to incur if they make a habit of this behavior (a fair point). Over and over again, Mork steps in to resolve a potentially violent encounter with fisticuffs, and over and over again Sun chastises him for this dangerous and immature behavior. But the unexpected thing about this dynamic is how wildly it tips in favor of Mork being the moral center as soon as he actually takes Sun's advice. When the Street Assailants™ show up and trash Blue Sky Café, making Rain watch as they beat the everloving shit out of Mork, he refuses to fight back, and he suffers immensely for it. When Sun hears about this, he immediately blows a gasket and blames Mork for all of it, and suddenly it looks like we have a theme: The liberal discourse of nonviolence demands that people suffer abuse without complaint and then blames them when the violence they were resisting finds them anyway. Or, if you want a less spicy take: Interrupting the cycle of violence only works when all sides of a conflict deescalate. If you bind only one party to nonviolence, you are exposing them to unmitigated cruelty. I think that is just a wild idea to explicitly hitch a BL plot arc to. And i love it. (n.b.: The fact that he becomes the moral center does not justify Mork later clocking Sun upside the head outside the club, but that scene is viscerally satisfying. Thematically speaking, he probably shouldn't do that again.)

I think the most intricate theme the show builds up to is the one that unites its lead couples and requires a bit more active engagement with the text, and it concerns the relationship between socioeconomic class, homophobia, the closet, and precarity. In each of our two lead couples, we have one character who is wealthier and more open about their sexuality, and one who is less wealthy and further in the closet. The well-off, out leads are Pete and Sun, and they both have less fraught relationships to homophobia and precarity. Pete in particular hits the jackpot: He is very wealthy and he has a kind and affirming father who is outspoken and has connections to other wealthy and powerful people. The idea of remaining in a self-imposed closet with Kao despite the massive levels of comfort he enjoys at home is the extent to which he considers homophobia a problem.

Then we have Sun, who has a slightly more complex backstory. He is a small business owner who is doing relatively well but he does still have to worry about the cost of maintaining Blue Sky Café. He comes from a less well-to-do family than Pete, but the closest he comes to hurting for cash is when he might not be able to pay rent for the café. The consequences of him losing his business would not be catastrophic for his family's future; his brother Rain would be fine relying on their father alone, and although he is shown to be homophobic, there's no indication he would let Sun starve or go unhoused. In fact, despite their strained relationship, it's due in part to their family's wealth that he's able to own the café in the first place. So the main point of contention that Sun has is that he doesn't want to rely on financial support from someone who doesn't respect his sexuality, a feeling which is totally understandable. But it also means he views the closet as a capitulation; it is a worse scenario in his mind than the unreal concept of losing everything, because the true loss of everything is not a possibility he really has any context for. If he loses his business, he'll have to eat humble pie and start over from where he was a few years ago, but he's unlikely to have to start from nothing. The pain of regression means more than the pain of destitution.

Meanwhile, we have two less-well-off lead characters who have different relationships to the closet. Kao and his mother are more or less meant to represent a declining middle class that are managing to keep the illusion of financial security afloat but who are potentially one professional misstep away from being unable to take care of their responsibilities to Kao's sister and her continued education (and upward mobility). Kao's fear of coming out is not only about how his mother would react; it's also about what could happen to his mother's job (and his own!) if others find out about him being gay. His fundamental disconnect with Pete comes from Pete's inability to understand the precarity of his position, because he can only understand the closet as a willfully chosen insecurity, and not as a defense against greater precarity. And what's wild is that the narrative basically makes Kao's fears come true! While his mother does accept him unconditionally, his queerness is at the root of a scandal that (temporarily) ruins his career and threatens his mother's promotion, and even after his portion of the conflict is resolved, it is unclear what her path forward is.

And Mork is the most precarious of all, a working-class hustler in danger of losing his home and without any family support system to fall back on, for whatever reason the audience wants to project onto his character. Mork scarcely has time to think about the potential utility of coming out before Sun takes him in, let alone the inclination. In fact, i think a lot of his initial resistance to Sun's advances can be read as disdain for ~*bourgeois decadence*~ tied up with a certain kind of internalized homophobia. It doesn't help that his entire support system is (a) Sun and (b) Rain, who is dependent on Sun. After working through this phase, though, Sun continues to push him to come out about their relationship (in between fighting with him about other things). From Sun's perspective, continuing to keep the relationship private even after Mork has achieved some meager level of security doesn't compute, because for Sun, he was willing to come out even when it did have consequences for his lifestyle, and he made it past those challenges. But what Sun doesn't see is that his homophobic father still continued to subsidize parts of his lifestyle even at a distance, a level of security that Mork fundamentally does not have. While Sun may theoretically understand the concept of homophobia, he doesn't see how poverty or homelessness might be related and much more immediate concerns for Mork, particularly if their already imbalanced relationship doesn't work out. If he loses Sun, it's easier in his mind to have nothing and be sexually unmarked than it is to have nothing and also face people knowing that he's gay, particularly given his fraught relationship with street violence.

So that's it, right? The more wealth you have, the less danger homophobia presents, and the more likely you are to see the closet as irrelevant, and the less wealth you have, the more precarious you are, and the likelier you are to see coming out as a luxury you can't afford. And then Non shows up and throws a wrench into everything, at least for the pure class-reductionists in the audience. Yes, he comes from a family that clearly has wealth, and he is afforded a great deal of immunity from the consequences of his actions because of the power his father holds over the livelihoods of Kao's family. But he is rendered precarious because of homophobia and juvenile dependence on this same man, and the system he lives within gives him very little recourse if he is abused thanks to his father's wealth and influence. So we can see the narrative is very careful not to imply that the potential danger of coming out is ONLY a function of some preexisting material privilege. Homophobia is actually in itself a distinct and material danger that is both independent of AND informed by socioeconomic class, and its factors are both interpersonal AND systemic. And the fact that Non is functionally outed by Pete to correct the related homophobic injustice happening to Kao? This show chooses a wild amount of morally complex violence right before its finale, and i still don't know if there's a way to fully unpack how that arc is 'resolved'. It's fascinating to see how Dark Blue Kiss uses its five gay lead characters to explore the nuances of class, queerness, and the politics of the closet with an intersectional approach, and the series comes to a very uneasy conclusion about the closet's purpose and utility! Y'all. I live for this shit.

Let's talk minor characters: Sandee and Kitty are cool ones that basically serve as thesis statements ex machina for our A1 and A2 plots, respectively. Sandee finally gets to be something other than comic relief when Pete and Kao start to fight, and she (correctly) diagnoses the problem as Pete's anger and jealousy preventing communication. The existence of Sun's ex-girlfriend and queer icon Kitty is hinted at by the apron Mork wears, so it's a bit of a gag when she actually shows up and gets to talk to him. I love a good setup/payoff moment. She also dispenses good relationship advice to Sun and (correctly) identifies the problem as his unwillingness to be wrong, to listen and apologize to Mork. Put a pin in this; we'll be coming back shortly.

This might be the only BL series i've seen where i fully stan the parents of a lead couple? Pete's dad, even while knowing his son is in the wrong, gives him excellent advice about anger and forgiveness without coming off as stern, and Kao's mom is a moving and sympathetic portrayal of a parent who doesn't quite know how to say what she means to her gay child. Both of their actors knock it out of the park. Where is their spinoff?

Alright, so the title is Dark Blue Kiss. What does the series do with that? For starters, the title literally manifests in the name of Sun's Blue Sky Café. Then there are the visual motifs around the color blue; it's kinda fun to pay attention to all the places it shows up. The swimming pool, the PeteKao thermos, the stitching of the letters on the café aprons, the stuffed bear, the bedrooms, the lighting in the club where Mork and Rain hang out—blue is a color that signals elements or locations in the show's key relationships, usually with both an initial setup and later payoff. And darkness also plays a role: See how often our lead characters rely upon the cover of night, or some more literal cover, to open up, express their feelings, swallow their pride or fear, and have difficult conversations. Darkness is paradoxically the narrative element that reveals. Put all of this together and, well. Pete and Kao kiss underwater; Sun and Mork kiss under the night sky. Kisses…in dark, blue places. Dark. Blue. Kiss.

Finally, some miscellaneous bits that tickled me: I love that Mork stays playing Pokémon Go. I love that besties Mork and Rain sometimes share a bed and there's not a no-homo moment between them. I love Kitty's flower shop that does gay weddings. I love the couple's t-shirt gag on Sun and Mork's road trip. I love that Pete reinvented the Build-a-Bear. Let that be a wrap.

I had a good time, but:

There is nothing about the first eleven episodes of this show that i would change, because those episodes are so tightly written and escalate so unimpeachably that they ought to lead to an absolutely killer ending, a finale so emotionally satisfying that this would go down as the greatest Thai BL series of all time. Unfortunately, that is not the finale that we got. Let's explore what happened.

There is no final reckoning with Pete and Kao's plot arc. After their swimming pool kiss redux, i kind of expected a conversation where they talk through what they learned about their relationship. It seems like the previous eleven episodes are building up to a recognition by Kao that he distrusted the two people he loves most and broke a promise he knew he couldn't keep, and a realization by Pete that his myopic jealousy prevented him from listening to his boyfriend's very real concerns about how his class and sexuality could (and almost did!) ruin his future. They would unite around the importance of being honest and listening to each other, and then the series would roll out the denouement, have a few more cute moments, and roll credits. Instead we get…Pete confirming he's still jealous and possessive and Kao blithely joking about events that nearly ended his professional career and relationship (interspersed with moments of them being cute). I got narrative whiplash. It feels like someone who watched clips of the first nine episodes and had a completely different takeaway wrote everything from the moment they get out of the pool onward.

Similarly, Sun immediately reverts to being as annoying as possible. In the penultimate episode, after the wake-up calls from Kitty and Mork, Sun (presumably) realizes that he's the one who fucked up by refusing to put aside his ego and listen to Mork. His stubborn unwillingness to apologize and be wrong almost costs him their fledgling relationship. So in the finale, i was expecting a version of Sun who is willing to put aside his own feelings to make Mork comfortable—a version that still needles and frets over him, to be sure, but not one that pushes and bowls over him. Maybe Sun could even explicitly acknowledge what he did wrong: "I thought i was protecting you, but you were trying to protect me (and Rain, and Manow), too. I just didn't try to see your point of view." Instead, we get an absolute farce, where Sun continually badgers Mork into publicly confirming their relationship, culminating in outing their status in front of everyone at his own birthday party. This is played for laughs, as if we didn't just sit through eight hours of watching a less extreme version of this behavior go horribly wrong for the other lead couple! And almost worse, Mork now simply declines to resist these advances, smiling as if this is what he wanted, actually, and his thematically important complaints about being steamrolled by Sun in the episode right before this were meaningless. They hollowed out my boy at the last minute, and to what end. We've already seen the many ways he both resists and capitulates to Sun throught the series; is it too much to ask that he be allowed to choose Sun without coercion or spectacle in the last episode?

As i alluded to while talking about Bad Buddy (2021), there seems to be a deep undercurrent of cynicism running through many Thai BL series, and while the Backaof-directed projects i've seen resist that undercurrent initially, they seem to realize last minute that they've been too sincere with the material and suddenly need to veer into narrative non-sequiturs to lower the quality of the show to an acceptable level. And so Dark Blue Kiss gives the viewers a collage of interactions between our main couples that would have made sense six or seven episodes of character development ago, but now just serve to undermine the story being told. Which is wild, given that they've already undergone multiple series' worth of character changes, so you would think that letting them evolve one final time would be worth it to cement the themes here. It's not like the lead characters are gonna get a fourth series installment at this point. And it's not a good excuse to say it's because all relationships have flaws or the characters are only human. That apologia is a cheap elision of the problem. We know they're flawed; we just watched like ten hours of them having pretty hard-to-miss flaws. But the point of setting up themes in a story is that the audience walks away at the end understanding why you told this particular story. So in a well-told story, the most competent ending would emphasize the characters behaving in ways consistent with the themes the creator was interested in getting across. If the narrative i'm shown chooses instead to focus on actions and dialogue that are tangential at best and contradictory at worst to those themes, i start to have questions.

So yes, parts of the finale truly lower the intelligence of the whole show. And yet…the rest of the story is so compelling and well-done that i can't bring myself to drop this show below A-tier status. It could have been higher! But at least it's not going lower.

Unfortunately, you have been chopped: Kiss (2016, parent story/prequel), Kiss Me Again (2018, prequel), Our Skyy (Episode 4) (2018, spinoff/prequel).

These are not necessary viewing to enjoy Dark Blue Kiss and in fact, if you are like me, they might make you enjoy these versions of the characters less. I know this both from confused reviews asking about weird retcons between this show and its predecessors, and also, Dark Blue Kiss itself communicates that there have been major character shifts that i, for one, am not interested in revisiting. In episode one, the way Pete and Sun interact communicates that they recently had some romantic tension but are now good friends, and it takes all of a couple minutes (which is incredible acting and editing by the way; you can see a lot of this conveyed in their eyes and gestures). I'm cool on that obviously lopsided love triangle. Characters bring up how Pete has grown much less impulsive and irrational than he was…before, which is a fairly clear signal from the writers that he's been toned down from earlier iterations, and i don't know that i want to see how much of his bad energy needed to be trimmed off. And the little we see of Sandee's background relationship is enough to let me know i don't need a whole heterosexual backstory on how it happened. I did try to watch the Our Skyy episode and the helpfully provided GMMTV PeteKao compilation, and about halfway through each, i was fairly bored. Dark Blue Kiss holds its own.

Character(s) entitled to financial compensation: Non, which i understand is a very controversial choice. However villainous and reprehensible his actions may have been, the fact that he is a scared child in a homophobic and abusive household remains undeniable. I can't help but empathize with a fictional gay teenager who panics under duress and grabs for any way to shield himself from physical abuse, and Dark Blue Kiss really went there. Also, abuse ≠ accountability, and if someone thinks what happens to his character is ultimately any kind of justice, they are probably bad at analyzing media.

Conclusion: Dark Blue Kiss makes several points about violence, trust, jealousy, and precarity in its first eleven episodes, and it delivers these messages without sacrificing, but rather by enhancing, the writing of its characters. As a gay who doesn't appreciate media reneging on themes to give the audience cheap and muddled resolutions, the ending is not nearly as narratively satisfying as it could have been—but even still, the series overall evens out to a comfortably high score on my personal enjoyability index. So don't get anything twisted: I love this show down. I'd even watch the finale again, despite myself. Team Mork forever.

When it is officially your birthday, I hope you have a wonderful one. You mean the absolute world to me. You’re one of my best friends on this site and I am so very blessed to have you in my life. “ He’s purposely pissing me off! ” Arms were wrapped around the Hitachiin and a soft kiss was placed on their forehead in order to calm them down. Receiving affection from their boyfriend always helped to soothe them but as quickly as they were tamed, well, they were riled up when their enemy spoke up, “ Is that all that you do? Whine, scream, and run to your brother or boyfriend? ” Oda carefully rearranged some paint supplies as the couple engaged in their little moment. With his back turned to them, Kaoru quickly spun around, ready to say some choice words to the other male... That is until Shuu tightened his hold to keep them back and used one hand to cover their mouth. “ ...You’re cute when you’re like this but shouldn’t we finish your plans? ”

When that suggestion came up, another voice spoke up, “ Shuu’s right! You both need to shut up and get to work! I’m doing everything here and this wasn’t even my idea! ” Kaoru’s eyes met Momo’s and after feeling a bit more calm, they lightly tapped their boyfriend’s arm so he could release them. Even if the anger lingered, they would resume what they had in mind. But not before mumbling a quick, “ Sure. I get in trouble but he doesn’t. ” They could tell that Oda heard them and knowing that he was probably amused by their childish behavior only annoyed them even more. “ Everything looks awesome. Momo, can you make some final touches? I’m going to grab the cookies from the oven. Love, go pretend that you’ve been asleep with Ari this whole time before she wakes up. And Oda... ” Nothing was said after that which earned them an unamused look. Taking their boyfriend’s hand, they walked back into the manor and immediately went their separate ways.

Once in Kaoru’s room, the vampire carefully climbed back into the bed where the small child slept. He closed his eyes, allowing himself to drift off for a moment until he felt the presence of someone watching him. “ Shuu? ” One eye was opened and upon seeing Ari sitting beside him, he finally woke up from his brief nap and sat up. “ Www... Where is Kao? ” Not much was said. After getting out of the bed, he offered his hand for the girl to hold and once she had a good grip on it, he exited the room with her. “ ...Let’s look for them. ” Obviously, he was aware of the big brother’s location but he was instructed to play naive for the plan. Ari didn’t say much as they walked down the long hallway. All that her mind kept thinking was that it was strange that her big brother wasn’t in the room with them. They usually sat at their desk, waiting for them both to wake up from their nap.

With the walk being a long one, Shuu decided to pick up the child instead and resumed the rest of the journey to the back of the manor. Ari’s eyes immediately went wide when she realized where they were headed. “ Nnn... No, thank you! Kao sss... says I www... will get lost. ” Right, her older sibling had always instructed her to avoid that specific area because she could wind up losing them. Even if her curiosity got the best of her and she wanted nothing more than to explore, she respected Kaoru’s wishes after they explained their worry about her wandering off alone ( especially in that area ). “ ...You won’t get lost. I’m here. ” His words were comforting but a part of her still worried about going against her brother’s wishes.

After they entered, she was immediately put down so she could explore. Her hesitancy made it difficult so she clung onto Shuu’s pants, not wanting to move until he did. As they slowly inched closer to the surprise, Ari released the other and gasped. “ Momo! Oda! ” Not wanting to leave one of her favorite people behind for her two other favorite people, she grabbed Shuu’s hand and did her best to tug him along. Once they reached the blanket, she wrapped arms around Momo who crouched down in order to scoop the little girl into her arms. “ Hi Ari! Did you have a good nap? ” A nod as a response before she turned her head to look at Oda. Seeing that, Momo moved closer to her boyfriend and allowed the other to put a flower in in Ari’s hair. “ Kaoru’s on their way. ” It was easy for him to tell that she would ask that soon.

And speak of the devil. Carrying a plate that required two hands, they slowed their steps once they reached the spot. “ Welcome to your Garden Party, Princess Ari! I’ve been planning this for weeks. We’re here because we want to celebrate you. ”

A Garden Party. Even if Kaoru had the idea, everyone pitched in to make the event even more special. A blanket laid under a tree with two picnic baskets resting on top, containing lunch, drinks, and some snacks. Along with that, the older brother had baked cookies for the celebration as well and placed the plate alongside one of the baskets. Oda had suggested spending some time to paint together so canvases, brushes, and paints were set aside for that. Momo came up with the idea of costumes for dress-up and bubbles so Kaoru made sure to purchase a bubble machine along with buying some costumes for everyone. Shuu had recommended playing some of Ari’s music ( ABBA ) and decorating the area with flowers since that seemed to be her aesthetic, according to him. Finally, Kaoru had prepared the food and drinks, making everything themself and invited all of their little sister’s favorite people.

“ What should we do first, Ari? It’s your day. ” Momo looked down at the child’s face ( who still tried to process the whole surprise ). It took a few seconds but once she made up her mind, she decided that they should eat before indulging in any other activities. After all, she had woken up with a hunger. “ Food first! Let’s eat! ” With Momo’s exclamation, they all took their seats on the blanket. Ari gently took a seat on her big sister’s lap, smiling when arms were wrapped around her. Oda sat beside his girlfriend, making sure to place a flower in Momo’s hair as well ( one that would match Ari’s ). Kaoru sat beside their best friend as well, wanting to be sandwiched between one of their best friends, their little sister, and their boyfriend.

With all the food handed out, they all took a few minutes to enjoy their lunch. The rest of the day went smoothly as well ( even with Kaoru and Oda having to spend hours together ). The small family had the time to do everything that Ari’s heart desired: painting and with Oda teaching techniques while Ari sat on his lap, creating an adorable masterpiece with her newest friend, then a bubble and dance party where she danced with her big sister and made sure to leave time to dance with Shuu as well, and finally a moment to finally explore the garden with her big brother, not letting go of their hand as they picked flowers and stumbled upon new friends ( little critters and insects ). The day had been perfect and one that she would surely remember forever.

When it was finally time to say her goodbyes, she made sure to give lasting hugs to her people. A super tight hug and a small spin with Momo, a more awkward but still heartwarming hug from Oda, a somewhat lazy but lovely hug from Shuu, and as they approached the door to the front of the manor so Ari could go home… Kaoru made sure to carry her the rest of the way. In the car, they never released her tiny hand and once they approached the orphanage, they gave her a hug that lasted for a good while. Saying goodbye for the meantime was always hard but they knew it wouldn’t be forever. “ Did you have fun today, Ari? ” A nod before she exclaimed, “ Yyy… Yes! Thank you, Kao! ” One final embrace and a soft kiss to the top of her head before the siblings had to the part.

As Kaoru watched her head inside with a guardian, they thought of more fun plans to do with her someday. Maybe a trip to the zoo? Or aquarium? Maybe a beach day? They weren’t sure but they’d decide at a later time. All they cared about was spending time with Ari and making her happy. That’s all that mattered.

Can you share the new products you’ve ordered?

I’ll use this as an opportunity to answer also @thejsbeauty’s questions about my current routine.

This is my current regimen. The products I ordered the other week have an asterisk (*) next to them.

The objective is to repair my skin barrier – going back to the basics, nourishing my skin. Keep also in mind that unless a product is irritating or breaks me out, I wait until I finish it before starting a replacement one. (Plus, I’m trying to insert only one new product at the time, in order to pinpoint its effect on me)

Cleansing: COSRX Good Morning Cleanser - while not bad, it’s also not great (and this probably holds true for almost all COSRX products I’ve tried), I’ll soon switch back to my long-standing favourite cleanser

Exfoliating: COSRX AHA/BHA Toner – another product of theirs I was disappointed with (very low concentration of AHAs and BHA), though I would give them kudos for the packaging; I’ll switch to TO Lactic Acid + HA (*) once finished

Hydrating: Hada Labo Hydraing Essence, normally two-to-three layers of it – not a big fan when it comes to application, but it does a good job and it lasts forever; I ordered Pyukangul Yul Essence Toner (*) to try afterwards, which I’m excited for

Mosturizing: Nivea Soft Crème – an inveterate companion that I appreciate for its ubiquitous presence, soothing properties, and cheap price; during winter I tend to apply two layers of it, during summer one is enough

Sunscreen: Kao Biore UV Aqua Rich Watery Gel SPF50+ - another favourite

Lip balm: Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Nourishing Lip Balm - as suggested by @petrichorals, so far has treated my lips v well

First cleanse: iUNIK Calendula Complete Cleansing Oil(*) – oil cleansing is new to me, no opinions as of now (product hasn’t arrived yet), but excited to try (supposed to be gentler, so)

Second cleanse: same as AM

Treatment: I’m taking a break from tret, so instead I’m applying on rotation TO Niacimide and TO Azelaic Acid – I got both during their November sale and while I love the active principles in both (and the price point!), I want to switch to different formulations once I’ll finish them

Heavy moisturizing: Dr. Jart Ceramidin Cream(*) – truly what my skin needs right now: it went from flaky and irritated all the time to glowing and smooth; I tried the travel size and loved everything about it and bought the bigger version, but it’s pricey, so once my skin has returned to normal conditions (and I’ve finished the product), I want to try some alternatives (namely Bioderma Atoderm Intensive Baume)

Sundays/Once a week

Exfoliation: TO AHA/BHA Mask – effective, but boring, can’t wait to use Pyunkang Yul Peeling Gel instead (which I cheated and have already used even though I haven’t finished the other one, but truly love it)

Face mask: Innisfree Pore clearing color mask – just finished The Inkey List Kaolin Mask, it’s one area where I like to always change up which product I’m using

Additionally, I’ve also ordered the Cream Skin Refiner Mist(*) from LANEIGE, because I think it will be great to use first thing in the morning, since I get up at around 6:30, but do my skincare routine only later on after working out & right before starting to work. & I’ve bought some products for my boyfriend (for a basic but complete routine): The Inkey List Salycidic Acid Cleanser (*), TO Buffet (*) , Beauty Bay’s Day One Moisturiser With Ginseng And Squalane (*) , & the same Kao Biore UV Aqua Rich SPF(*) I use.

History Repeats

It's TRUE that blessings are often disguised as bitter trials. In Pick and Rome's case their blessing came in the form of a Freaky Friday episode that lasted a week. An entire week spent living each others lives forcing them to self-reflect and recall who they were as individuals and as a couple.

In Rome's case, Rome had to remember that while his boyfriend wasn't big on public displays of affection, it didnt mean he loved him any less. In fact, the way Pick loved Rome meant more to Rome than mere kisses and hand holding in the park ever would. Rome just felt ashamed It had taken this whole body switch experience for him to see that.

(Truth be told, a small part of Rome had always feared his boyfriend would wake up one day and realize that Rome wasn't what or who he wanted. Realize that he wanted more than what Rome could ever give. It was an unreasonable and unfounded fear, but it was always there at the back of his mind. The doubt convincing him that he was running on borrowed time. Convincing him that he had best treasure the moments with his P'Pick because one day he might not have him anymore. )

It took Rome having to live as P'Pick for Rome to remember his boyfriend's love had always been shown not spoken. His P'Pick was a man of action after all. The man whose "I love yous" were displayed in the way he helped Rome reach his cereal from the highest shelf, in the way he, also, drove Rome to work every morning without complaint, the way he kept a picture of them together hidden away on his desk, the way he blew off his coworkers just so he could rush back home straight after work to see him, and in the way he indulged Rome's every whim no matter how small. P'Pick might not openly declare his love but it was always there in other ways that mattered. Rome could see that now.

Moreover, the final confirmation that completely destroyed any remaining doubt Rome had was the fact that P'Pick confessed his workaholic attitude was born out of his need to see for THEIR future. It was in that moment that Rome had been able to see past his fears and insecurities and finally see the man his P'Pick had become.

Pick, on the other hand, had realized that his workaholic tendencies had infringed on his time with the one person he had been doing everything for. He hadn't realized he had made his boyfriend feel like a burden to him. That Rome had been burning himself making coffee because he didnt want Pick to carry the weight of their living expenses all on his own. It made Pick mad that it took a whole curse for him to notice how neglectful he had become to the love of his life. What kind of boyfriend was he that he hadn't even noticed the burns on Rome nor the sacrifices Rome had been making. The curse had been a rather needed wake up call for him.

Thus, Pick found himself requesting a day off from work, much to the shock of his boss and coworkers, to accompany his boyfriend to register for his last semester of college. His presence wasn't necessary but he wanted to be there for moral support. It was also good to be back walking the halls where they had met and fell in love.

"You think once you're done we can sneak into the red room and finish what we started that one time" Pick teased loving the way Rome's entire face flushed in embarrassment.

"Well technically what I started but that's beside the point." He continued ignoring the scandalized 'P'Pick!' from his boyfriend. "I'm quite curious how far you were willing to go had I not stopped"

"Now you're definitely NOT coming inside with me." Rome shook his head motioning for Pick to sit on the benches right outside the Photography room. Just like the old times. "Wait here until I'm done registering"

"Before you graduate, I will have you in that red room" Pick promised laughing at Rome's cheeky "we'll see" response before entering the photography room alone.

Doing as told Pick patiently sat on the bench to wait on Rome. Well he tried to at least. Once the games on his phone no longer held their appeal, Pick got up to inspect the bulletin board on the wall. The bulletin was completely filled to the brim with flyers of all kinds of school activities. Although one in particular caught his eye. It was a flyer announcing the annual exhibition for the photography club's photos.

Suddenly, Pick was reminiscing about THAT disastrous camping trip of Rome's sophomore year. The trip where he had practically almost pushed Rome away from him for good. God he had been such an idiot in denial. Pick had always regretted his behavior during that trip. (Although the kiss that happened right after was definitely something he did not regret. )

Luckily, Rome had still accepted him and had forgave him almost immediately. Pick, on the other hand, wished he could give Rome a better camping experience, preferably WITHOUT a third wheel. Given that this was Rome's last year, Pick figured he could still make it happen.

Just as Pick began trying to plan the trip in his head he was interrupted by someone calling his name. "P'Pick?"

"Oi! Nong Pete, how are you?" Pick greeted happy to see his cousin, Pete.

"I've been good," Pete politely replied, though Pick could tell he was confused, "I thought you had graduated already what are you doing here? Did my dad send you here to spy on me?"

Pick laughed at the annoyed look on Pete's face. Pick really couldn't blame Pete for the accusation. In the past, when Pete had been in high school, Pick had been sent by his uncle to look after his rebellious cousin. Pete's temper had always gotten him in trouble.

"Actually no I'm not here to spy on you. I'm waiting on somebody. Why? Should I be here to look after you? Still getting into trouble Pete?" Pick asked. "Besides isn't the engineer department on the other side of campus what are you doing here?"

"Well, I- I- I'm waiting on someone too" Pete's blush didnt escape Pick's notice nor the fact that Pete suddenly had a new fascination with the floor.

Oh.

Pick laughed "With your temper? Who did you trick into dating you? "

"Hey! " Pete defended himself. "You're..."

The rest of Pete's remark was lost to Pick and his teasing mood gone when he noticed Rome walking out with another man the same flyer he was looking at just moments ago in both their hands.

Disregarding his cousin, Pick walked up to Rome and this other man to announce his presence, hoping he wasn't too late in preventing another terrible camping experience.

" Did you make a new FRIEND?" Pick asked as he gently inserted himself between the two men and emphasizing the word FRIEND. After the whole Din experience , Pick was not keen on having another person thinking they could have HIS boyfriend.

"Ah P'Pick this is Nong Kao, he is my beloved junior from middle school who is now joining the photography club. " Rome happily introduced " Nong Kao this is P'Pick he is our senior who has just recently graduated."

Pick and Kao politely bowed at one another.

"I'm not just your senior you cheeky boy" Pick thought.

"Actually this is the senior I was just telling you about, " Rome continued excitedly "if P'Pick is okay with it, we can borrow his car and go to Phuket to take pictures for the exhibit."

Pick inwardly facepalmed as Rome rambled on about the details of the trip. So much for his plans.

"You're going on a trip?" Pete interrupted, staring intently at Kao.

"Oi Pete, when did you get here?" Kao nervously replied.

" Oh this is Nong Pete!" Rome exclaimed then quickly turned to Kao to mock whisper "He is very handsome."

"Rome" Pick warned whilst Kao turned bright red and Pete gloated. "Dont. Nong Pete is my cousin"

At Rome's happy gasp, Pick wanted to bang his head against the wall. He didn't like the mischievous twinkle in his boyfriend's eyes.

"All four of us should go on a trip!" Rome proposed, much to Pick's dismay.

This was going to be a disaster.
