Tessa Walker Headcanons
Since apparently my baby girl is becoming so popular!
Her middle name is Meridian and she has a love/hate relationship with it because for a while it was the closest thing she had to Nya
Full name is Elizabeth Meridian Walker
Jay tried calling her Eliza when she was little and she hated it but then Cole started calling her Tessa and she loved it
She is the most chill of the four sisters
Is the mom sibling just like how Noah is the dad sibling
Always carries around a first aid kit because you never know whose going to have an accident or if someone is going to get hurt from haywire power usage
Much quieter when she's around other people but very loud when it's just her and Noah
Cannot and will not ask for help under any circumstances, which is something that they all used to admire until they learned it was a trauma response
In Noah and Tessa's timeline, Jay was not a reliable parent. He fell apart completely after Nya died and he never really recovered. He turned to a lot of different coping mechanisms that weren't healthy for him or the kids and all three of them suffered for it. Hence why Cole and the others had to step in to help raise them
Tessa feels responsible for her sisters and she wants them to know that there is someone in their lives other than Jay who cares and who wants them
Kaida fucking ADORES Tessa when she finally starts warming up to everyone. They like to do puzzles together during the evenings
Plays mediator between Jenna and Kaida because she knows that once they work through their shit they're actually going to be really good friends and because Tessa is a good big sister
The Reliable One TM. The one person in the family that Nya can trust with a grocery list
Nya and her actually took the longest to form a relationship (even Kaida liked Nya before she did. Kaida!) because Tessa never had a chance to develop any sort of relationship with Nya, and all she knew was stuff that Jay or the others told her. Eventually they figured it out but Tessa is still standoffish (not on purpose it's just in her nature)
Also Jay was hard for her and Noah both to get along with too. Noah warmed up to Nya almost instantly but the Jay in their timeline did a ton of damage that Tess and Noah had to overcome first (luckily Jay has experience in dealing with traumatized children)
Loves hanging out with her dad but she almost always gives up her time with him to Jenna or Kaida because she doesn't think hers is important
Her aviator jacket was a gift from Cole and Kaida loves to steal it
Is the sibling to be around when you're upset. Tessa doesn't push, just lays down on the couch or the bed or whatever it is and lets them cry it out on her shirt while giving hugs and kisses and whatever else they need
Jenna comes to her the most even after Jenna's had her growth spurt and they still lay down on Tessa's bed even though Jenna is half hanging off
Tessa is oftentimes the only one Quinn will listen to and it's mostly because Tessa has a hard enough time as is and she doesn't want to make it harder
She has bad days with her anxiety. The others took a long time to realize it because of how well Tessa hides but they know now
I can write more and I probably will but this is already very long :D

She thought it would be like any other freshman year- she would be invisible to the upperclassman, she would get good grades, and maybe she’d even go out for lacrosse. Story: Something New
Faceclaim: Kathryn Newton
Species: Hunter-protector hybrid
Love Interest: Liam Dunbar

Bex Gaumond always described her parents as Romeo and Juliet; a love story that no one planned. She thought that the happily ever after her parents got, however, would set them apart from the star crossed lovers. Then her dad dies, and she, her mom, and her sister moved across the country to live in Beacon Hills. She would dream of being like Wonder Woman, saving the world. Riley just never thought she would be Wonder Woman. Or, more specifically, like Wonder Woman. Yep, turns out Riley is an Amazon. She didn’t believe it at first, but when a group of juniors tell her that her name is on a hit-list for supernatural creatures, it sort of got hard to ignore.
Name: Sabrina Argent-Gaumond
Story: Something New
Faceclaim: Vanessa Marano
Species: Hunter-protector hybrid
Love Interest: Isaac Lahey
Summary: When Sara Argent married James Gaumond, she was disowned by her family. The Gaumonds protected the supernatural, instead of hunted it, like the Argents. Despite the estrangement of her family, Sara lived happily with James, and they had their own family. However, this is not Sara’s story.
Sabrina Argent always admired her parents. She thought they were the bravest people she’d ever met. After her father’s death, she, her mother, and her sister moved to Beacon Hills, and met the family that didn’t want them. Sabrina vowed to continue her mother’s wishes and stay out of the supernatural. Then a few days before Sara is supposed to head back to school, Scott starts acting weird, her old classmate suddenly reappears after six years of silence, and Stiles is googling the supernatural on Wikipedia. She is determined to figure out what is going on. Sara McCall knows one thing: protect her little brother.

Name: Theresa ‘Tess’ Lowell
Story: Anchors
Faceclaim: Danielle Rose Russell
Species: Born werewolf
Love Interest: Scott McCall
Summary: Tess knew that werewolf packs adopting orphaned werewolf children wasn’t uncommon, she just never thought it would happen to her. But there she was, seven-years-old, hiding in the woods, and scared out of her mind. Peter Hale found her hiding in a cave, brought her home, and Tess was adopted by Talia Hale. She had a normal life, and it was almost happy, until a fire set by hunters killed most of her new family. She and one of her sisters ran, and landed in South America. Six years later, Tess and Cora hear about one of the great Hales, building a pack. They travel back to Beacon Hills, and end up getting kidnapped by a pack of alpha werewolves. This is bad enough. It was made even worse when Tess finds that one of the alphas was the wolf who killed her family.

Faceclaim: Jenny Boyd
Species: Banshee

Despite what had happened, Vivian is happy. She is reunited with her best friend Stiles, she is going to a school where no one knows her- or her family-, and she even discovers werewolves are real. Oh, yeah, Vivian’s eight-year-old self is definitely fangirling about that. But knowing the truth about the weirder side of the world isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. And now Vivian is experiencing things like werewolves, hunters, and almost dying every time she leaves the house. But hey, that’s just Beacon Hills.
Name: Ximena Calavera
Story: Wolves and Fire
Faceclaim: Camila Mendes
Species: Hunter turned werewolf
Love Interest: Scott McCall
Summary: When Ximena was a little girl, her favorite place to be was at her abuelita’s club. Not on the dance floor- Araya never would have allowed the elementary schooler to dance with the clubbers- but in her office, where the real fun took place. Ximena grew up hearing stories from Araya. Not fairytales; no, Ximena thought fairytales to be a silly thing compared to the stories of her family’s history. The young girl was in awe of her family, and vowed to one day follow their code and hunt werewolves just like them. Until one day she went out on a mission with her father and grandmother and was bitten by a werewolf. Thirteen, alone, and scared, Ximena refused to stay in the Calavera’s so called ‘custody’. So she ran, all the way to Beacon Hills. Three years later, Derek Hale comes knocking on her door. There’s an alpha pack in town, and one of the members? The alpha who bit Ximena.
Name: Zoey Stilinski
Story: (I Don’t Mind Your) Shadows
Faceclaim: Willa Holland
Species: REDACTED
Love Interest: Derek Hale
Summary: Stiles knew that he had the coolest big sister in the world. She was basically an archery pro, a mythology nut, she never minded helping him and Scott train for lacrosse- even if they weren’t very good-, and she would do anything for her brothers. And Stiles knew that most siblings lose touch when the older one goes to college, but Zoey made it a point to make it like she had never left Beacon Hills. So, when Scott gets bitten by a werewolf, Stiles knows just who to call.

Brie Larson vs. The World: A Letter for Humanity
So I’d like to share and say hmmm in terms of adoration mm yeah Chris Evans what a husband material hubba hubba Chris Hemsworth funny dude even Taika Waititi oh Jodie Comer- in lesbians for her Armie Hammer Jake Gyllenhaal oofers eye candy Margaret Qualley mah babies Mackenzie Davis Wynonna Ryder and Kristen Stewart of course all them Marvel girls from A for Angelina Jolie Blanchett Danai Debicki Saldana Evangeline Karen Scarlett etc etc etc to Z for Zendaya Star Wars gang Daisy Felicity Oscar Lupita um yes please all the heroines we love Gal Gadot Amber Heard les cheveux roux madmoiselles Chastain Amy Adams the veterans Patricia Clarke Bullock Paulson Weaver Gillian Anderson Moore Lawless Mirren what goddesses they are even the young’uns newcomers Diana Silvers Billie Lourd Hunter Schafer such gems Thrones crew Gwendoline Emilia Lena Kit Sophie Maisie err pretty much everyone of them yes even the Night King give me the shivurs Aubrey Plaza Anna Kendrick Sarah Carter yas yas yas even some voice actors Ashly Burch Elizabeth Maxwell Hannah Telle j’adore Fab Five queers heck even politicians like AOC or Kamala Harris or Brian Sims gets me giddy wonderful wonderful insanely talented amazing great people.
But
then
there’s
Brie Larson.
I was a music photographer and journalist for a while, I interviewed people and got the chance to meet some renowned humans (Feist, Au Revoir Simone, Kina Grannis, YYYs, Sean Lennon to name a few) it was my job to recognise their backgrounds and learn people’s personalities and identify situations.
While there are so much amazing people that I mentioned above who has done so many great things, I have never seen someone MOST relatable like Brie, so humble and hardworking in the harsh -no privacy- industry of entertainment, who just bases her life out of goodness and excitement of life and purity. She’s like most of us, she’s awkward and shy, loves pets, video games, Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Sailor Moon, fan girls towards other celebs, music nerd and an actual nerd, and just loving life in general.
So it does break my heart that people are targeting her as the subject of everything that’s negative just because she wanted to set a stigma that women can be powerful and is their own person, and she’s had it rough before (as I read/listened/watched her interviews) Here’s a narrowed down of her life:
- Her parents were constantly fighting when she was young, leaving her into a broken home, around 7 years old she moved to LA living in a studio apartment with her mom and sister with the 3 of them with only 1 murphy bed. She’s estranged with her dad until now.
- She’s definitely an introvert, type of girl who sits on the far upper left or right corner in the theatre thinking that she doesn’t block anyone’s view (she actually said this on an interview), had social anxiety attacks since she was young but she knows she loves acting and wants to entertain people, starting with singing in her early years. She prefers doing stuffs alone and creating arts just to keep her mind at ease.
- Because of her passion in acting and her social condition, she was home schooled and focused in acting schools more, thankfully her mother supported her to go to acting schools and just going on auditions. Her singing career didn’t go as much as she hoped, to make ends meet she started DJ-ing just to earn money. Keep in mind Brie did not come from a prestige family with access to Hollywood unlike some of her Marvel co-stars. She started from zero.
- She actually auditioned for Twilight and was told, “Don’t ever bring Brie Larson back here again” for whatever reason. Was also told she wasn’t “sexy enough” for some stuffs she auditioned.
- Even though she loves acting, knowing she’s an introvert, it is the only reason why Brie has never considered blockbuster movies because she was afraid of getting recognised worldwide that it would leave her having no privacy at life at all. Due to this, she accepted mostly indie movies (Most recognisably Short Term 12 or The Glass Castle) but even by doing indie movies she didn’t earn enough money that sometimes she would cry in her kitchen telling her mom that she doesn’t have any money just to buy food.
- She did the movie Room which won her first Oscar for best actress, but in the process in doing so it broke her in half because of her childhood past and trauma. Whilst doing The Glass Castle she also said it was rather personal that she played a character with a broken relationship with a father (Played by Woody Harrelson) is because she never had father-daughter relationship. All the stuffs she did were mostly personal because she felt connected to them. Even Captain Marvel, because she felt that it was a moment in her life where she needs the change to be stronger for herself and Carol has changed her for that.
- Her road into becoming Captain Marvel was almost like a brick to brick road built up for her, as she has acted in movies with most of the Marvel casts. In 13 Going On 30 with Mark Ruffalo, with Chris Evans in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, Scarlett Johansson in Don Jon, Tom Hiddleston and Samuel L. Jackson in Kong: Skull Island and Joe and Anthony Russo in Community. A few reasons she accepted the role of Captain Marvel; One being when she saw Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, she admitted that even as the movie was just about a few minutes in, she couldn’t stop crying and she asks herself as to why that is, and she realised that this is the stuff I need, we don’t have this enough, where a powerful strong woman was depicted on screen; The other, for the most realistic reason that she did need the money while she was given the opportunity; The SIMPLEST reason is just to MAKE PEOPLE HAPPY that the character is going to be brought to life; The MOST important of them all is that she wants to break the barrier of herself. She wants to be more out there, spreading positivity and setting an example to people to be stronger for themselves, that people can change for the better, in which in this case: Brie was a completely non athletic person with asthma, she trained for 9 months, almost 3-5 hours a day for 5 days a week at the gym with constant crying because of her hard work and changes to herself, vomited mostly at the gym and also puked during her pilot training. She had bruises all over the place because she did most of her stunts and training (Per her saying, it was ignorance at first because she thought everyone on Marvel was doing their own stunts when they’re not, but she did most of them herself that she was allowed to).
- Now that she has recognition, she’s actually doing more activism and be a spokeswoman into helping people. She even promotes people’s brand and stuffs via her Instagram just to help out simple things.
Please remember, she’s human. She has flaws, but I have never seen her doing/saying anything fatal that depicts resent. Never. And no, Brie is not the first female ever trying to set examples for people, but she is the current one getting the most hate for it just because of Captain Marvel— a film about a female superhero, setting an example for people to be stronger, she did it just to make people happy and half the world is angry at her. WTF. Believe it or not, this is girl actually CARES about people, she would care about you if you actually DO CARE about all the good things that does matter. Being of who she is, Brie is capable of empathising with people, which is something most people don’t have.
Brie wanted to be a better person, SHE DID. When in fact Brie has successfully done that, now people are hating her even more because she’s just a “bigger easier target” because of her role and apparently it is easier to hate someone else than just to be nice or appreciative or grateful in general.
If you’re reading and you’re hating, can I just ask, what has Brie Larson done to your life? And maybe ask yourself what have you done that matters in your life? We can just be nicer to other people, it’s really not that hard to try, you know. Life is just about being kind to each other, there is no point in throwing hate because it’s not your cup of tea, having an opinion to your taste is fine, but giving hate comments about is just being an asshole. Imagine being in her shoes and dealing with all those that wasn’t necessary in the first place. It does take mentality of the size of the Jupiter with that amount of hate, and Brie Larson is still dealing them. Just think if that was you, could you be able to handle it as far as what she’s gone though? Really think about it. Not one human in the world wants to be hated for even the smallest reason, not even you.
As to those who feel like they wanted a change in their lives, if Brie can do it, SO CAN YOU. Stay calm, just be nice and kind to others— even to those who treated you unjustly. Let the action speaks louder than any words will ever do. And be happy of life.
My adoration for her is at the apex at the moment. She is IT.
So I’m just here spreading the love for Brie.

Title: The Hunters Chapter 12
Summary: What happens when four idiots get together? Nikki’s looking for his dad. Tommy’s trying to get out of his mom’s shadow. Vince is along for the ride. And Mick is just trying to keep them alive. Which is harder than it sounds when then Winchesters join the fray.
Warnings: Language, violence, m/m smut, canon divergence, character deaths (temporarily), wincest if you squint (may add more tags as I go)
Several Months Later
The hunts kept up, and despite being a really popular band on the strip, Motley Crue just couldn’t make it big. They were constantly taking off for hunts, and while they did have some original songs that were popular, they were mainly a cover band. But they were good at what they did and the strip loved them.
“Man, I would love it to just make it big even once,” Nikki sighed. “Like, it’d be nice not having to travel upstate to hustle pool to get more than Ramen.”
“I know babe,” Tommy responded. He had his head in Nikki’s lap and was reading a magazine. “I’d kill to have a drum kit like some of these. With all the lights and pyro and shit.” Nikki smiled and ran his fingers through Tommy’s hair. Tommy had been complaining of a headache all morning, and most of the night before. He actually hadn’t drank as much as the others had, and he could hold his liquor with the best of them. So Nikki was trying his best to help his head.
“I don’t think we’re booked anywhere tonight, are we?” Nikki called over to Vince and Mick, who were at the table eating some cereal.
“Nah. We have nothing until Friday,” Vince told them. Nikki nodded and turned his attention back to Tommy, who had abandoned his magazine and had his eyes closed.
“You okay?” Nikki asked him.
“Yeah I’m just gonna get some water,” Tommy told him before standing up. He had only made it a couple steps when his vision started to blur and was replaced by something else.
Nikki, Vince, and Mick watched as Tommy collapsed to the ground, blood coming from his nose.
“Tommy!” Nikki yelled as he ran to the fallen drummer. Vince and Mick were up in no time, at his side. “Tommy, can you hear me?” He shook Tommy, who was staring straight ahead at the wall. What, in reality, was only about thirty seconds, felt like a year to Nikki. Tommy blinked his eyes and reach up to wipe his nose with the back of his head.
“What happened?” Mick asked as Tommy looked at the three of them.
“You guys...you wouldn’t believe it,” Tommy told them. He slowly stood to go wash the blood of his hand, aware that the other three were right at his heels in case he fell again. Tommy washed his hands and turned to look at them. “What?”
“What wouldn’t we believe?” Mick asked. Tommy sighed.
“Psychics run in my family,” He told them. “And I...sometimes I know things are going to happen before they do. Not always though, and this is the first time it’s happened while I was awake in a long time.”
“Don’t you think that’s something you should’ve mentioned?” Vince asked. Him and Tommy had been friends for a long time and Tommy had never once mentioned anything about this.
“It never came up, and like I said, it’s normally just dreams that end up happening when I’m awake,” Tommy sighed and headed back to the couch.
“What did you see?” Mick asked him.
“It was weird but there was this girl in a tree and she fell out and she just...floated there,” Tommy told them. “I don’t know what it means, but I know exactly where it was at.”
“Where?” Nikki asked, staring at Tommy and noticing the way Tommy wouldn’t look at him.
“Fairfax,” Tommy told them. “I used to snag singles from a Tower Records nearby. Got Vinnie and I both some cool things.”
“Well, I for one want to go see the flying girl,” Vince told them. “Come on T-Bone. You and me will go check it out.” Tommy looked at Nikki, a little nervous about what he was going to say. As Tommy stood, Nikki laced his fingers with his and stood up with him.
“Come on. Let’s head over to Fairfax,” He told them, squeezing Tommy’s hand.
****
“Well, no flying girl,” Vince looked around. Mick shook his head and headed over to a newspaper stand. “You said it was around here, didn’t you?”
“Yeah. I don’t see anything though,” Tommy told them, walking over to a tree.
“But mommy, I told you that’s what happened!” A little girl could be heard a couple houses down from where they were standing. “Billy dared me to go up in the tree. And I did! And he left and I couldn’t get down and I fell! And I flew like a bird and landed on the ground!”
“Elizabeth, I told you to quit spreading those stories. The school already has a therapist talking to you about your imagination,” An older woman, who the boys assumed was the girl's mother, told her. “Now you stop it right now.”
“That was her,” Tommy whispered, watching as the girl and her mother got in a car.
“What? The girl from your vision?” Mick asked. Tommy nodded.
“She was wearing the same dress and everything,” Tommy told them.
“Damn. I wanted to watch her fly,” Vince pouted.
“I don’t understand. If we weren’t supposed to be here to see her fall, why did I have the vision?” Tommy asked. Nikki wrapped an arm around him, giving him a squeeze. I guess we can go back home. I…” Tommy trailed off as his brain started to feel like it was being squeezed in a vice.
“Tommy?” Nikki asked, looking at his boyfriend. Tommy had a glazed look in his eyes before he squeezed them shut.
“My head,” Tommy whispered before he leaned into Nikki. The scenery before him changed.
He was looking inside a garage. He watched a man walk into a workshop area and slam the door behind him. He was muttering something under his breath as he plugged in a radio and started playing some music. Tommy watched as the man worked on something. He saw across the room from the man as a drill started to float in the air. It spun, like the trigger had been squeezed a couple times, causing the man to turn and look at it. Before Tommy could react, the drill raced forward, hitting the man right in the crotch as it turned on. Blood went everywhere, and the last thing Tommy saw before his vision returned to normal was a girl standing outside the window, watching.
“Tommy!” Nikki called out, bringing Tommy back to the here and now. “Are you with us?”
“I had another vision,” Tommy breathed, not realizing he hadn’t taken a breath. “There was a guy. And a floating drill and it hit him right in the…”
“Oh god,” Vince cringed. Mick produced a small pack of tissues so Tommy could wipe the blood off his nose.
“Did you get anything from it? Any indicator of where it would be?” Nikki asked, leading Tommy back over to the car so he could lean against it.
“It was in his garage. But there was a girl outside. She had ratty blond hair and was just watching it happen,” Tommy told them.
“How much you wanna bet she’s connected somehow?” Mick asked.
“Children are fucking creepy,” Vince told them.
“She wasn’t a child,” Tommy asked. “She was probably about my age. I have no idea who she was. But I also have no idea who he was either.”
“Why don’t we go get some food to help you get your strength back up, and we’ll go from there?” Nikki suggested. Tommy nodded and Nikki helped him into the Barracuda while Mick and Vince headed back to Vince’s Challenger. Tommy settled into the passenger seat as Nikki started to drive. Tommy glanced out the window. There, coming out of the house to meet with a younger girl, was the man from his vision.
“Nikki!” Tommy called out. “That’s him!”
“Who?” Nikki asked as he pulled over. Tommy pointed to the house, where a man looked around before leaning in to kiss the girl. “Should we warn him or something?”
“Wouldn’t you want a warning before a power tool comes flying at your junk?” Tommy asked, looking at his boyfriend before looking back at the couple.
“Fair point,” Nikki nodded. Tommy jumped out of the car, not grabbing a badge or anything. “Hey wait!”
“Sir!” Tommy called out. The guy and girl looked at him. “Sir, I think your life is in danger.”
“Are you threatening me?” The guy asked. Tommy shook his head.
“What? No!” Tommy told him.
“What my partner here is saying is we have reason to believe your wellbeing is in danger,” Nikki flashed his badge. Agent Scott. “We think it’d be in your best interest to...not be here tonight.”
“Oh, I get it,” The guy laughed. “You know, you almost had me fooled for a second. How much did my bitch wife pay you to do this?”
“What?” Tommy shook his head. “Sir, we don’t know who your wife is. We’re trying to keep you safe.” The man rolled his eyes and led the woman into the house. Tommy looked back at Nikki. “What the fuck was that?”
“You two okay?” Mick asked as they pulled up by them.
“Tommy tried to save that asshole’s life and he was an asshole,” Nikki told them. “I think he deserves his new piercing.”
“Yeah but in the dick?” Vince asked.
“I’m pretty sure this is where it happened,” Tommy told them. “There’s a garage right there.”
“Stake it out and see if we can figure it out?” Nikki asked him. Tommy nodded. “Okay, but first, you need some food. Who knows what all this stuff is doing to you.”
“Yeah, that sounds good,” Tommy sighed. Nikki led him back to the car and they headed out.

One Happy Christmas
INFO -dave focused -semi sadstuck -dave is ftm and june and jade are mtf -dave is mute so he signs -dave is going to school for a paleontology degree. you dont need to know that for this oneshot but its my headcanon so i wanted to share.
TRIGGER WARNINGS -abuse -bro and mom
***
"Dave! What are you doing for Christmas?" Dave shrugs at June's inquiry and flips another page in his textbook. "The Strilonde family was not very interested in holidays, not only because Mother was Jewish." Jade turns to Rose, "So are you and Dave Jewish?" Rose reads while talking, "By blood yes but we don't follow the religion or holidays." June smiles, "Then you two should come with me and Jade to Dad's house over Christmas break! He'd be happy to have more people to cook for." "I wouldn't mind that. Strider?" Dave shrugs and signs, "Sure I guess, as long as he's okay with having a guy like me over." June rolls her eyes, "You know he loves you, Dave." "Yeah, Dave! He even wanted to pay for your testosterone!" "I'm more than happy to use Bro's money for that." June laughs, I know.
Christmas break finally starts and June piles everyone into her car. The drive to Washington took a couple of hours, mostly spent listening to music and joking around. When they pull into the driveway, Dad Egbert is waiting for them. He waves to them as they pile out of the car and helps them unload their bags. "It's great to see you all again. Dave, Rose! How has everything been away from your parents?" "Amazing," They both say at the same time. Dad Egbert shows them to the kitchen and talks about what he'll make for Christmas dinner. "Would any of you like to help me with this tomorrow?" June and Jade offer to help but Rose says she'll be working. Dave decides to help too. "For now, let's put up the tree. I wanted my daughters here to help and having you two here as well is even better." Rose smiles and thanks him, and the group makes their way to the living room.
They get the tree up by an empty wall in between the door and stairs and have fun going through the ornaments, a lot of which were made by June and Jade in grade school. Dave teases June about her baby picture ornament and she laughs, "As if I haven't seen any of your embarrassing baby pictures Dave." They wrap lights around the tree in a speed competition and try their best to make the ornaments look evenly placed. Rose loses her mind. Jade eats popcorn off the strings. Typical Christmas things. Dave is smiling the entire time, which is so nice for a change. He even takes off his shades. He's safe here, he doesn't need to hide his emotions behind them. Dad Egbert put on Christmas music and June wraps some tinsel around her neck as a scarf and takes turns dancing with everyone. Rose plays her violin along to Dance Of The Sugar Plum Fairy and Carol of the Bells. June joins in on piano and Jade even gets out her bass. Dave doesn't have an instrument so he just beatboxes a little and does meme dances.
After they get back on track and actually put the star on the top of the tree, as well as some photos of each other ("You're an angel Dave, you need to be on the top of the tree." "Only if you're there too June."), they sit down to watch Christmas movies. Rose and Dave recommend Nightmare Before Christmas, June insists on seeing Home Alone, and Jade brought one of her copies of The Grinch, appalled that Dave and Rose had never seen it. Dad Egbert, June, and Dave fit on the couch. Rose happily shifts from the back of the couch, to the arm, to the floor, and Jade is content to curl up on the floor. Jade is the first to fall asleep, and Rose retires to Jade and June's room to work after Home Alone 3. Dad Egbert eventually gets tired and retires to his room, telling them that there are cookies in the fridge and to go to bed at a good time. They do because 3 am is totally a good time. Rose is already asleep on the top bunk with Jade, who had gone to her room at 2 am. June and Dave squeeze into the bottom bunk and fall asleep quickly.
In the morning, Rose works on her novel as June, Jade, and Dave try their best to be useful in the kitchen. Jade gets plants to chop up from the garden she started that summer, June helps her dad prep the meat and Dave tries to be useful where he can by getting out and putting away ingredients, handing out utensils, and washing dishes. After the main courses are started, Dad Egbert ushers everyone out of the kitchen so he can bake pies, cakes, and cookies for after. June "Bluh"'s at the Betty Crocker products on the counter and happily leaves to eat gushers on the couch. Neither Jade or Dave could bring themselves to tell her that those are Crocker products also. "Are you having fun, Dave?" Dave smiles and nods, "Yeah. I am." Dave and Jade compete in Mario Kart, with Jade coming out victorious. Rose eventually joins them and watches their match with occasional quips.
Today is Christmas. Dad Egbert had somehow found the time to wrap a bunch of presents in secret and place them all neatly under the tree, as well as fill stockings and hang them on the fireplace. He wakes the four of them up with cookies and hot chocolate and they groggily make their way downstairs. "It's a good thing I didn't wait to buy your presents. I was going to have June and Jade take them to you after the break." They sit in a half-circle and Rose is baited into putting on a Christmas hat and passing the presents out. Dad Egbert films the kids' reactions as they open their presents. He got June a nice blue dress and some other new outfits, a bra with good quality inserts, and some movie sets. Jade unwraps custom made dog ears and tail, some exotic plant seeds, a bra with good quality inserts, and some outfits as well. Dave, after hesitating, unwraps his presents to reveal some stuff for his turntables, a new binder, a book on weird preserved dead things, and a trans pride flag. Rose happily unwraps her presents of a violin care kit, some wizard cat-themed pajamas, and a hard drive and printer ink.
They each present Dad Egbert with their own present as well, cheap because College Students, which they bought before leaving for break. June got him some icing in a shaving cream themed bottle. Jade got him a book of Betty Crocker's secret recipes. Dave got his hand on a new pipe, and Rose came through with some really cool Dad™ hats. He cries while holding his presents and thanking them, pulling them into a hug. Dave doesn't start crying at all, what are you talking about, Shut Up Lalonde. After the hug ends he signs to everyone, "This was the best Christmas ever. Best day ever. I love you all." June smiles, "Y'know how we can make it even better?" Dave raises an eyebrow, "Let's mail your parents coal." Dave and Rose smile, "Hell. Yes."
A couple of days later, Dave gets an angry call from Bro, and Rose gets one from Mom. After they were done getting yelled at they hung up without a word. "What was yours about?" "'Elizabeth Strider you little bitch I will maim you. Your lucky I'm busy here or I'd go there and stab you.' Yours?" "Rose Lalonde, what the hell is this? I was gonna send you alcohol from my personal stash or maybe even some candy but not now. I'm gonna go drink this headache away and if I still remember this later, you'll see what happens when you cross me." They laugh at their terrible parent's predictable reactions and go down to join the others for breakfast. This is their family. Not an alcoholic and a weird puppet sword guy. Their family is the two girls and their father sitting at the table offering them food and smiling. They chose their family.

poppy: parenthood
A flower that blooms in the desert
Plance x Kallura Week 2018
Guess Who’s Having a Baby: No seriously…guess
Allura’s phone buzzed and when she looked at the caller her face lit up.
“Hey Katie! What’s u-”
“KEEP YOUR VOICE DOWN AND GO SOMEWHERE PRIVATE!” the voice hissed in hushed tones on the other end.
“Why are we whispering?”
“JUST DO IT!”
Allura looked around. Keith was outside mowing the lawn. She excused herself to the bedroom and shut the door.
“What’s going on?”
“I think I’m pregnant.”
“WHAT?!”
“I SAID KEEP YOUR GODDAMN VOICE DOWN!”
“Ok ok sorry. Are you sure? How do you know?”
“My period has been harder to find than Where’s Waldo.”
“Did you take a test?”
“I have one but I haven’t taken it. I’m scared. I wanna know, but then I don’t” Katie’s voice softened.
“Look come over and you can do it here, I’ll be with you.”
“With Keith there?”
“All the guys are going to the baseball game tomorrow remember? Come then.”
“Ok…ok…thanks Lura.”
“No problem. Everything is going to be ok no matter what.”
“I know, I know. Ok bye.”
The next night Allura and Katie sat in Allura and Keith’s master bathroom waiting for what felt like an eternity. Katie sat on the edge of the bathtub while Allura perched herself on the counter. Katie held the little white stick in her trembling hands.
“Oh my god I see something. A blue line! No, two blue lines! What does two blue lines mean?!”
Allura picked up the box and turned it over, studying the back.
“Well,” Allura said slowly, “we’re having a baby!”
“Oh god…oh god oh god oh god.” Katie leapt up and snatched the box out of her hand, giving it a second look.
“I know it seems scary now, but you guys are gonna be great parents! Motherhood is beautiful and magical!” Allura tried to comfort her.
“If it’s so beautiful and magical why aren’t you and Keith trying?” Katie arched a brow.
“Uh…well…you see, uh…look this isn’t about us right now. How are you going to tell Lance?”
Katie tapped her finger to her chin.
“I was thinking we could just not tell him, like until the baby pops out. By then I’ll have thought of something.” She smiled.
“Katherine Elizabeth McClain.”
“I just need a little time! I’ll figure it out. And don’t use my full name in that tone you sound like my mother.” She slapped Allura’s arm.
Suddenly the ladies could hear the front door open and close.
“Allura? Baby I’m home!” Keith’s distant muffled voice could be heard through the locked bathroom door.
“Shit shit shit he’s home early! What do we do?”
Then came a knock.
“Babe you in here? You ok?” Keith asked from the other side.
Katie and Allura panicked. Allura grabbed the pregnancy test and shoved it in a stack of hand towels that were purely meant for decoration while Katie took the box and threw it out the window. Allura shoved Katie while mouthing “what the hell are you doing?!” to which Katie shook her head frantically and shrugged.
They straightened themselves up, put on their best innocent smiles and opened the door.
“Hi darling!”
Keith looked at his wife, then at Katie, together, in a locked bathroom.
“Everything ok?” he asked.
“Yes, just…uh…” She looked at Katie.
“Doin girl stuff…y’know facials and uh beauty things” Katie finished.
She cringed at her own bullshit.
“Ok…” His eyes narrowed.
“Well gotta go! See ya later Allura!”
Katie moseyed by Keith before practically sprinting down the stairs out the door, making sure to snatch up the box in their front yard before getting into her car.
“Well if you’re done doing uh girl stuff, can I use the bathroom? Traffic back from the game was terrible and I’ve been holding it for like an hour.”
“Sure honey. I’ll go get dinner started!” She kissed his cheek and skipped out of the room.
Keith shook his head, accepting that he would never understand women and shut the door. After relieving himself and washing up he did the one thing Allura constantly scolded him for: wiping his hands on the goddamn decorative towels.
EXACTLY FOUR MINUTES LATER…
Lance’s cellphone went off while he was still in the car. He answered it and put it on speakerphone.
“Hey Keith! What’s u-”
“KEEP YOUR VOICE DOWN AND GO SOMEWHERE PRIVATE!”
“Why are you yelling?”
“JUST DO IT!”
“I’m in the car by myself, chill out. What’s going on?”
“Allura is pregnant.”
“WHAT?!”
“I SAID KEEP YOUR GODDAMN VOICE DOWN!”
“I’m alone idiot! Now are you sure? How do you know?”
“I found a pregnancy test hidden in the bathroom!”
“Whoa, way to go sharp shooter!”
“This is not the time for jokes.”
“Well were you trying?”
Keith paused.
“Well we weren’t trying, but we weren’t exactly not trying y’know?”
“Oh I know.”
“What do I do?”
“Wear condoms next time?”
“Lance!”
“Look you don’t want it to look like you were snooping so just give her time and wait for her to tell you.”
Keith sighed.
“You’re right…”
“Duh. Now put it back and pretend you never saw it.”
Keith hung up and placed the little white stick of destiny back where he found it and went downstairs to have dinner with his wife.
A couple weeks later the Koganes had the McClains over for dinner and a game night.
“I mean it’s a decent show, but it’s not realistic. Like giant robot cats that morph and turn into a giant robot man?” Lance scoffed before sipping his beer.
“Right? Like shouldn’t they at least turn into an even bigger cat?” Keith chimed in.
“But Cattron sounds stupid.” Katie chuckled.
“And that princess character? Her ears are so weird!” Allura said as she grabbed the wine bottle in front of Keith and poured herself a glass.
Both men stopped abruptly and watched her intently as she filled it up.
“Uh, are you sure you should be drinking that hun?” Keith asked casually.
Allura blinked and titled her head.
“Why not?”
“Uh…well,” he met eyes with Lance and did he best to no give himself away, “you shouldn’t drink too much it’s not good for your health.”
“But you’re drinking.”
Keith looked at his own glass of wine. How was he going to broach this without letting Allura know that he knew about the you-know-what?
Allura shrugged and brought the wine glass to her lips.
“You can’t drink that, think about the baby!” Lance blurted out, slamming his hands on the table.
A pin drop could’ve been heard in the resulting silence.
“I’m sorry, think about the what?” Allura nearly choked on her chardonnay.
“The…baby?” Lance was suddenly not so sure about his words.
“What baby?”
“The baby we’re having” Keith finally cut in. “It’s ok Lu, I know.”
“Know what?!” Allura yelled, feeling like she was losing her mind.
“I found the pregnancy test.”
Allura did a double take. Katie sunk down in her chair.
“Oh…” She put her glass down.
“And I just want you to know it’s ok. It was a surprise for sure but I’m up for anything as long as we’re together. You’re gonna make a great mom.”
Allura’s lip quivered as she brought a hand to her heart while taking Keith’s hand in hers.
“Darling that is incredibly sweet and it means the world that you’re supportive but the test isn’t mine.”
“It’s…it’s not?” Keith pouted, confused, relieved, disappointed all at once.
“Then who the hell was it?” Lance questioned.
Allura’s gaze fluttered over to Katie. Keith followed. Then Lance.
Katie had slid so deep in her seat she was practically under the table.
“K-Kit Kat?” Lance’s face softened.
“It’s mine” she grumbled, keeping her eyes down.
Lance felt his heart skip.
“I was gonna tell you, I just didn’t know how and I wanted to see the doctor first to confirm and…well we’re gonna have a baby.” She smiled anxiously.
Lance just stared at her then the tears welled in his eyes, but he quickly wiped them away before they fell.
“I’m gonna be a dad?....I’M GONNA BE A DAD! HOLY SHIT I’M GONNA BE A DAD!”
Lance leapt out of his chair and yanked Katie to her feet, cupping her face in his hands and peppering it with kisses.
Keith and Allura held each other’s hands tightly as they looked on at their friends, hearts full.
“I gotta call mom and dad and grandma and Veronica is gonna piss herself and then we gotta call Sam and Colleen and Matt and Hunk will wanna know and-”
“Ok ok easy there champ.” Katie wrapped her arms around his waist. “How about we just enjoy tonight and we can do the press conference tomorrow?” she joked.
Lance nodded and kissed the top of her head.
“I love you” he whispered in her hair.
“I love you too” she murmured back.
They finished out the dinner, Allura was allowed to finish her wine and they played a few rounds of Pictionary before calling it a night.
“I can’t believe Katie and Lance are gonna be parents” Keith said as he slipped into bed.
“Pretty crazy huh?” Allura replied as she tied up her hair.
“Yeah but they’ll be great don’t you think?”
She nodded in agreement.
“Man I really goofed earlier didn’t I?” He grabbed Allura and snuggled up close.
“You did, but it was sweet that you handled the news so well, even if it turned out to be a false alarm.”
“Well if it happens for us one day it’ll be fine.” He kissed her nose.
“It will.” She looked up at him and lifted her head until her lips met his.
He returned her affection, kissing her a bit more deeply. She sighed happily into his mouth, wrapping her arms around his neck. He pulled back and began to nibble a trail down her throat while working his hand up her nightgown.
EXACTLY TWO MONTHS LATER…
Katie sat at her office desk, typing a lengthy email when her ringtone sounded off. She picked it up and tucked it between her ear and shoulder as her fingers continued to tick away at the keys.
“Hey Allura, what’s u-”
“KEEP YOUR VOICE DOWN AND GO SOMEWHERE PRIVATE!” she whispered in a distressed tone.
“Why are you whispering yet yelling at me at the same time?”
“JUST DO IT!”

Shadowhunters Short Story #32.
It was the middle of February 2013, and Tessa Carstairs was currently standing in front of a full length mirror in the room she shared with Jem, in just her bra and a pair of shorts, admiring how much her body had changed over the past 7 months to accommodate her baby, growing inside her. Tessa was currently 7 months pregnant and could not wait to meet her daughter. It was strange to be pregnant again, after so many years, but she could not be more happy to be carrying her and Jem’s child. Her pregnancy had been somewhat more rough than her pregnancies with Jamie and Lucie had been, with Jamie and Lucie her morning sickness had only lasted for the first trimester, however this time around she was still feeling ill and being sick in the 7th month. The pain was considerably worse this time around, her hips and back were constantly giving her bother, she could hardly settle at night because of the pains and the baby kicking, so she was eager to give birth and meet her child.
Tessa suddenly feels arms snake around her waist, and when she opens her eyes and looks in the mirror, she relaxes at the sight of Jem.
“Hello beautiful.” Jem softly says, lightly kissing her neck.
“Hi.” Tessa quietly says, placing one of her hands over Jem’s, which is resting on her swollen stomach.
“What are you up to?” Jem asks in a curious tone.
“Nothing, just thinking about the baby and this pregnancy, it’s strange to see myself pregnant again.” Tessa says.
“I think you have never looked more beautiful.” Jem softly says. Seeing Tessa carrying his child was absolutely amazing for him, he loved to feel their child kick, move, roll and everything in between, inside her. He could still hardly believe Tessa was pregnant and soon they would have a baby. He was nervous, but mostly excited, he had always wanted to be a father, to have a family of his own and in just two short months, he would.
“You have to say that, because it’s your fault I look like this, if you had not told me we could risk it and not use a condom, I wouldn’t be pregnant.” Tessa teasingly says. This baby was a total surprise, she and Jem had not been trying to get pregnant, however one night 7 months ago, just as things were getting intimate and she had asked Jem to get a condom from the bedside table, they had found there were non left, Tessa had originally said they should stop and not do anything without protection, but Jem had said it was worth the risk, nothing had happened in the 5 years since they had been reunited, nothing was likely to happen now. Tessa thought this was a perfectly good answer and thought no more of it, until a few weeks later, when she began to feel ill in the mornings and missed a period.
“That was the best decision we ever made, though we were not expecting the outcome, our Melody is a beautiful, perfect surprise.” Jem softly says. When Tessa was 2 months pregnant, Brother Enoch had told them that she was pregnant with a baby girl, at first they were overwhelmed with the possibility of names for her, they wanted her name to have meaning and be significant, but there were so many choices, from Charlotte to Cecily to Sophie to Elizabeth, they had no idea what to name her, until one day, as they were lying in bed late one night not even talking about names, Jem’s eyes lit up and he said ‘Melody’. Tessa was extremely confused at first, but then Jem explained that the name ‘Melody’ had just popped into his head and instantly he knew his daughter should be called Melody. Tessa had no disagreements about it, she loved the name too and felt it was extremely fitting for their daughter, and so baby Carstairs became Melody Charlotte Carstairs.
“Yes she is, I can’t wait to meet her.” Tessa softly says. Mostly, she could not wait to see Jem and their daughter, he was going to be a wonderful father, and love their baby so very much, Tessa just couldn’t wait to see them together.
“Me neither. Come into the music room with me for a bit love, I want to play something for you and Melody.” Jem says.
Tessa quickly pulls on a shirt and follows her husband into the music room, where he sits her down on one of the sofas, by the window, picks up his violin and starts playing the most beautiful piece Tessa had ever heard. The entire way through the piece, Melody kicks like Tessa has never felt before, it feels like she is trying to get out to get closer to the music, Tessa was concerned that if Melody didn’t calm down soon she would end up breaking her waters and being born two months early.
Once he has finished playing, Jem opens his eyes, sets the violin down and sheepishly asks
“Did you like it?”
“James, that was the most beautiful thing I have ever heard, and Melody loved it too, she’s kicking up such a fuss in here, did you write that?” Tessa asks in a tone of awe, running her hand down her bump. Jem nods and takes a seat beside her, placing a hand on her stomach, his eyes widening as he feels Melody kicking.
“I began writing it when we found out about her, Kit helped me actually, he’s got a lot of potential. I titled it ‘A melody for my Melody’.” Jem quietly says. He had almost given up on writing a piece for his daughter, he felt that he simply could not get it right, until one evening when Kit came into the music room and asked what he was doing. When Jem told him he was trying to write a piece for the baby but just couldn’t get it right, Kit strode in, picked up the manuscript and gave him suggestion after suggestion, until the piece was just right. Jem was extremely grateful to the young boy and told him he would make sure the baby always knew that her big brother helped write this piece for her, but Kit insisted that it should just be a special gift from Jem, he would get something else for the baby.
“Oh Jem, it’s beautiful, and she loves it already, you’ll have to play it for her when she’s born, too.” Tessa softly says, brushing Jem’s hair back from his face.
“I will, I want to play it for her all through her life.” Jem quietly says. He could not wait to meet his sweet baby girl and finally be a father.
________________________________________________________________
It was now the middle of April and Tessa was due any day, her due date was just a few days away, but Melody could come anytime before that or as late as two weeks after that. Currently, she and Kit were the only ones home, Jem was out getting some last minute supplies for Melody, and would hopefully be home soon. Tessa was upstairs in her and Jem’s room, folding some freshly washed baby clothes, when she feels an intense pain rip through her. She had been feeling some mild pains on and off all day but thought nothing of them, she figured they were just fake contractions, which she had a lot when pregnant with James and Lucie. Though now the pain was a lot worse, and she was certain she was in labor. Placing the pile of folded baby clothes to one side, Tessa calmly makes her way downstairs into the living room, where Kit is watching T.V.
“Kit, I don’t suppose your dad is home yet, is he?” Tessa weakly asks. A couple of months ago, Kit had started calling Tessa and Jem mom and dad, and they were both delighted and touched.
“No not yet, why?” Kit asks, turning the T.V. down and turning to face her.
“Um, I think I’m in labor.” Tessa says in a shaky tone. Kit’s eyes widen and his jaw drops.
“Oh my god, oh shit, what should I do?!” Kit asks in a panicked tone. Tessa grimaces as another pain hits her and through gritted teeth says
“Can you call your dad and ask him to come home?” Kit nods frantically and in a breathless tone says
“Yeah, yeah of course!” He quickly grabs his phone from the sofa and hurriedly dials Jem’s number.
“Hello?” Jem answers just a few seconds later.
“Dad! It’s me, it’s Kit, you need to come home right away, mom’s in labor!” Kit hurriedly says.
“I’ll be right there, stay with your mom Kit, and call Catarina, your mom has her number, she’s going to deliver the baby.” Jem calmly says.
“Okay, please hurry!” Kit exclaims, rushing over to his mother’s side.
“I’ll be five minutes, just stay calm.” Jem firmly says. “I’m going to hang up now Kit, I promise I’ll be right there.” He adds.
“Okay.” Kit says in an unsteady tone.
“Here, call Catarina, you’ll find her number in my contacts, oh god please hurry Kit, tell her to get here as soon as she can.” Tessa says in a strained tone, holding her phone out to her son. The pains were unbearable and Tessa was worried that Melody was going to make an appearance very soon.
As Kit hurriedly explains everything to Catarina, Tessa feels a popping sensation in her lower abdomen followed by a gush of water from between her legs.
“Oh my god! You have to get here right now, her waters just broke!” Kit tells Catarina in a tone full of fear. He had never been so worried or afraid in his life, what if Tessa gave birth right here on the floor? What if something was wrong with the baby? All these questions and more swirl around Kit’s head, but he is pulled from his thoughts by the door banging open and Jem rushing in.
“Tess, Tessa it’s alright, I’m here now, it’s okay.” Jem softly says, kneeling by his wife’s side, where she had sunken onto the sofa in pain.
“It hurts Jem, it hurts so much.” Tessa weakly says, tears forming in her eyes.
“I know, it will be over soon, Catarina will be here in a moment and she can give you a pain killing spell, come on, lets get you up to bed.” Jem gently says.
“I can’t walk, the pains are too much.” Tessa says in a tight tone.
“Then I’ll carry you, Kit can you get everything for Catarina? Hot water, towels, everything like that? And can you let Catarina in when she comes?” Jem asks, turning to look at Kit, who was still totally panicked.
“Y-yeah sure.” Kit stammers, turning and running to the kitchen to boil the kettle.
Tessa’s labor lasts for hours, despite the strong pains making it seem like the baby could come at any second, and she had never felt so awful in all her life. She was currently curled up on her side, her hair plastered to her face with sweat, her face contorted in pain. Jem was kneeling beside her, holding her hand and pressing a cool, damp flannel to her forehead, every so often. He was amazingly calm and collected, pushing all his own fears and worries to the back of his mind so he could help Tessa bring their baby into the world.
“Is she going to come out any time soon?” Tessa weakly asks Catarina, who was standing at the end of the bed, organizing everything for the delivery.
“I don’t think so Tess, you haven’t progressed much in the past few hours I’m afraid.” Catarina gently says. Despite being close friends with her, Catarina had never seen Tessa so vulnerable and weak, it shocked her to know that Tessa could be affected this greatly by pain, she always thought her friend was invincible after everything she’s been through.
Tessa sobs and clutches Jem’s hand tightly, letting out a scream as a contraction tore through her.
“Tess, you haven’t eaten since very early this morning, perhaps you should have something now to keep your energy up.” Jem softly suggests to his wife. Tessa had been in labor for over 5 hours now and barely taken a few sips of water, let alone eaten, and Jem was becoming very concerned for her. When he delivered babies when he had been a Silent Brother, he always encouraged the mother to eat and drink anything she could handle through her labor, especially if it was long and slow, it was better for both mother and baby than an energy or stamina rune.
“He’s right Tessa, you need your energy to get through this, your baby needs your energy.” Catarina softly says.
“No, I can’t possibly eat, I just can’t.” Tessa says in a breathless tone. The thought of food made her nauseous, the pain was far too intense for her to eat.
“Tessa you have to, even just a biscuit or some sweet tea, to get your blood sugar up.” Jem calmly says.
“I don’t want food, I just this baby out!” Tessa exclaims, groaning as another pain hit her.
“I know love, but Melody needs her energy too and right now she can only get it from you, you have been so amazing and brave over the last 9 months, you have done everything you can to keep our baby girl healthy, now she needs you to be strong for just a few more hours, then she’ll be here and you can cuddle her and love her, but right now she needs you to give her energy, and you need energy yourself, even just one biscuit will be better than nothing.” Jem softly explains. Tessa knew he was right, but eating was the last thing she wanted to do right now.
“Okay, just one biscuit, a plain biscuit, nothing too sweet or elaborate.” Tessa weakly says.
“I’ll pop downstairs for a minute and ask Kit to find the plainest biscuits we have, and if we don’t have any, I’ll send him to the shop, I won’t be a moment.” Jem softly says, bending to kiss his wife’s forehead before leaving the room.
Kit had been waiting downstairs for the past few hours, and he was beginning to feel creeped out, as the house was seemingly infested with ghosts. He presumed they were all relatives and friends of Tessa and Jem, but it still spooked him, he did not like being around ghosts at all, but they were everywhere, the only place he could get sanctuary was his bedroom, but if his mom or dad needed him then he had to be where they could easily find him.
Kit turns the t.v. down as hears footsteps on the stairs, wondering if it’s a ghost or his dad with news about his mom and the baby.
“Dad, is everything okay with mom and the baby?” Kit asks, sitting up straight when his dad appears at the bottom of the stairs, looking tired and bedraggled.
“Well, your mom is in a lot of pain and her labor is progressing really slow, there’s no sign of your sister coming anytime soon, and your mom is loosing energy fast, she can’t eat much but has agreed to have a plain biscuit, can you see if we have any and if we don’t, can you go to the shop?”Jem asks, holding out a five pound note to Kit.
“It’s alright, I’ll pay for them if I have to go to the shop, you go be with mom, there’s a shop right around the corner so if I do have to go to the shop I’ll only be a few minutes.” Kit calmly says.
“Thanks son, I appreciate it.” Jem says, giving Kit a quick squeeze on the shoulder, before running back upstairs to Tessa’s side.
Another 5 hours pass, before Tessa finally feels the urge to push. She holds onto Jem’s hand tightly, wishing more than anything that the pain would end and she could hold her baby.
After three hours of pushing, Tessa feels a weight lift from her, followed by a low wail filling the room. She instantly relaxes back into the pillows, trying desperately to catch her breath.
“By the angel Tess, I can’t believe you did it, you are so amazing, I love you so much!” Jem says in a tone of awe, leaning down to softly kiss his wife on the lips.
“Now, miss Carstairs, your mummy and daddy are waiting to meet you.” Catarina softly coos to the baby, as she carefully gathers her into her arms and passes her to Tessa, who instantly pulls the baby to her chest, a huge smile breaking out onto her face and tears of joy running down her cheeks.
“Oh hi Melody, my sweet baby, it’s so good to finally meet you, oh baby I have waited so long to hold you, you are so perfect.” Tessa quietly says, pressing her lips to Melody’s forehead. This sweet little girl was the image of her daddy, she had a few tufts of black hair, Jem’s bone structure, eye shape and mouth shape, the only things she got from Tessa are her nose shape and pallor.
“Melody, my baby girl, I’m your daddy.” Jem says in a tearful tone, stroking his daughter’s cheek, as she curls into her mother’s chest. He had never felt like this before, he was exhausted, worn out, relieved, shocked and beyond happy, he was a father, he had a baby, he and Tessa had a little family of their own.
“Hold her.” Tessa says in a hoarse voice, holding Melody out to Jem. He cautiously gathers her into his arms and gazes down at her in awe. She was beautiful, absolutely perfect, and she looked just like her grandmother and father, she was a little Carstairs through and through. Jem so wished his mother could be here to meet her granddaughter, she would love Melody so much and Tessa and Kit too, but then if she were still alive, Jem and Tessa would not have met, he would not have this beautiful, perfect family.
“Hello Melody, you are just perfect my sweet girl, you have a big brother waiting to meet you, downstairs, but I think mummy and I will keep your arrival a secret for another few hours, because your brother is a Herondale and if he wants to meet you then nothing in this world will stop him.” Jem coos to the baby, who looks up at him with her wide, brown eyes, fascinated by the sound of his voice. “Catarina, I don’t suppose I could ask a favor of you could I?” Jem asks, turning his gaze from his daughter to his friend.
“Of course, what can I do for you?” Catarina asks, stuffing the last bloody towel into a basket.
“Could you possibly grab my violin from the music room? I want to play for Melody, now she’s here.” Jem softly says, gazing down at his daughter again.
“Sure, no problem.” Catarina says, placing the basket of dirty towels and sheets, into a corner.
“Thanks, I appreciate it.” Jem says.
A few minutes later, Catarina returns with his violin and carefully hands it to him, before taking the basket downstairs to put the dirty laundry in the washing machine, and then make Kit make her a cup of tea before she went back home and told Ragnor and Magnus that their little niece had finally arrived. They would all be little Melody’s honorary Aunts and Uncles, and Tessa and Jem had asked Catarina and Magnus to be her godparents, needless to say Ragnor was quiet jealous, even though he didn’t really like children, though he was wonderful with Rafe and Max and Catarina often caught him referring to Melody as his family, Ragnor liked to pretend he felt nothing but annoyance, but secretly he had the biggest heart going and was a big softie at heart.
Back upstairs, Tessa settles back into her pillows, with Melody skin to skin with her on her chest, as Jem stands at the foot of the bed and plays the piece for Melody he had written all those months ago. At first, the music makes Melody very curious and alert, and she looks all around her, her eyes resting on her dad, until a few bars into the piece, her little eyes start to droop.
After a long, painful labor, Tessa falls asleep with her brand new baby on her chest, listening to her husband playing a melody on the violin that he had specifically written for their Melody, happier than she had felt in a very long time.

Forgotten Love Letter 💌
pairing: Peter Parker/Gender Neutral Reader
summary: Peter discovers a letter you had intended to give him in freshman year of high school before you started dating.
warnings: mentions of blood
note: I got inspired by letter writing in numerous fics I’ve been running into and tatbilb ofc 💕 enjoy :)) first imagine ive written in over 2 decades, it’s been sitting in my drafts for that long too- now she’s out here in the world thank u thank u
•••
The school week was officially over, and you could finally relax over the weekend. It had been an exhausting week with numerous amount of homework (it’ll be this way in college get used to it now teachers said or claimed) You still had homework, but it wouldn’t be due until the end of the next week, so Saturday was officially for you.
Your boyfriend of a year had promised you two would hang out at your place and watch a movie, but after his nightly activities. You knew Peter was Spider-man, an internet sensation everyone was crazy about including yourself. The only way you found out is because Peter has never been great at keeping secrets. He saw you on the street one time, and just waved, “Hey (y/n)!” He yelled, completely forgetting he was Spider-Man and not another high school student who can nonchalantly say hi to their significant other. You were hella confused and had awkwardly waved back, recognizing his voice but not quite sure if you heard it right.
It took you all night before you had put two and two together. From those late nights he wouldn’t answer your texts or would answer your text, weird bruises and aches he sometimes had, and his ability to climb through your window despite the fire escape being farther away from your 7th floor bedroom. And his voice. You quickly got to work and went to school the next day wearing custom made Spider-Man gear to see if he catches on that you know and he looked completely touched by the fact you were wearing it.
“Did you- figure it out when I said hi to you?” Peter asked one day underneath the bleachers during lunch before Ned came to join you two. You had smirked and said, “I thought the point of the mask was for people to not know who you are, especially the ones you know.” He blushed of embarrassment and you kissed him on the cheek and said, “Secrets safe with me...” with a wink.
It was after that when Peter would come to you after nearly every night patrol he did, he’d come into your room in the full suit to tell you about his day, what he had done, what kind of crime he fought and other times he’d come when he’s injured. Those were the nights that worried you the most and made you lecture him on being much, much more careful. You didn’t care if he’d heal fast- he’s not invincible.
You hadn’t expected him in early today though, knowing he was spending the entire day with his Aunt May before going on “patrol”. So you spent most your Saturday laying sround, sleeping on and off and texting Peter. Your mom was out all day working and you didn’t expect your dad home till the next morning because he’d just left for the graveyard shift. You were bored out of your mind after every favorite movie was watched and decided to clean up the mess in your room you ignored the past week.
An hour of picking up and vacuuming later, you then decided to organize your closet. That’s when you found it- a medium sized white wooden jewelry box with flower and swan designs on it your mother had gifted to you when you were eight. After putting all your clothes back and some in a box, you sat down on your bed, legs crossed as you wound up the music and then opened the box, the melody of Swan Lake playing the moment you lifted the lid. You smiled at the swan figurine that slowly spun along to the music. A feeling of nostalgia bursted through you as you were reminded of being a child, humming the tune wherever you went and drawing swans randomly. Your eyes shifted to look at the contents inside, letting the music continue to play.
There was anything but jewelry in there, In there was instead a few notes you and your best friend from middle school used to give each other, filled with silly stuff and inside jokes. There was even old letters from a pen pal you had in 5th grade! Her name was Elizabeth and she was from the UK. About a half hour had passed with you reading through them when you eyes caught the light pink, folded paper that was at the very bottom. You picked it up, setting the others aside.
You flipped it around, not remembering what the letter was, what it contained or who it was for right until you saw the name “Peter Parker” with a heart around it. Instantly your eyes widened, the happy nostalgic memories being replaced with the cringey memory of that one afternoon on the bus ride home writing out your feelings for your new friend from Science class. You felt your cheeks heat up at the memory, and slowly small tidbits of what you wrote were coming back to you.
Just as you moved to open it, there was a sudden loud knock on your window. You jumped in your spot, the letter falling from your hand and you turned to see the man himself in his Spider-Man suit, waving at you and pointing at the window asking you to let him in. Instantly you relaxed and quickly shoved the letters back into the box and shut it, the room becoming silent.
Hopping to your feet, you went to unlock the window, saying, “You’re here early did May-“ but your words got caught in your throat when you saw he was cut up and bleeding. He pulled his mask off, his brown locks of short hair sticking up in nearly every direction.
“Peter what the hell!” You cried, gently touching around a bruise on his left cheek and then looking down at his cut up suit to see the damage. It was pretty bad, but he just gave a pained toothy smile that you glared at, already knowing what he was going to say.
“It’ll heal- I dunno about the suit- but ill heal I just need to get kisses from you and lay down for a while and I’ll be better in no time,” he said, pecking your lips then walking passed you. You were baffled as he had one hand over his side and used the other to grab a towel to put over your bed before sitting down on it. You’d honestly never seen him this hurt- you’ve seen bruises, mega painful looking bruises, and few cuts but this was just bad. His suit was cut up. What kind of people did he run into for them to do that? He noticed you staring and sighed, “I know what you’re thinking (y/n), but really I’m okay! You should’ve seen the other guys.” He joked but you crossed your arms not amused.
“Other guys? Looking at how you ended up- I can only assume you killed them,” you said in a serious tone, but he laughed like it was a joke. When he saw you weren’t laughing he let his head fall downwards for a moment.
“Can you not lecture me right now- this really hurts,” he motioned over his wounds and you sighed once more, hands falling to the side as he gave you those puppy dog eyes now. You didn’t say anything as you wandered over to your door and went to retrieve some things to clean his wounds. He may heal pretty fast, but you’ll be damned if he’s going to lay there all bloodied up and in pain. Peter watched you go and pushed himself more onto the bed, before swinging his feet up and knocking over the music box on your bed. He raised a brow, and grabbed it, realizing it was a music box when he saw the wound up in the back. He opened it after twisting it, smiling at the soft tune that began to play out like you had done. He curiously looked at its contents and he would’ve left it alone because it was clearly private if they were in a box, but his eyes caught sight of a “-rker” and when he moved the other papers he saw it was his name. Curiosity got the best of him as he pulled out the pink, folded sheet of paper and laughed softly when he saw it was his name written in your handwriting in the center of a near perfect looking heart.
He glanced at the door to see if you were coming back, and saw you still werent back so he gently opened it, seeing a full page of writing and a date at the top, Peter recognizing the year as freshman year, the year you transferred to Midtown High and the first year you met. He felt his heart warm up as he realized what this was.
It was a love letter.
Dear Peter Parker,
I know we’ve only just met, but every time I’m around you I feel butterflies in my stomach and my heart races 100 beats per minute. You’re very sweet, funny, and really smart and I couldn’t help but feel these feelings for you even if we’ve only known each other for a month or two. Everyday spent with you has been the best days of my life! I came to this school with no friends and dreaded having to have to do a partner project in biology. You were kind enough to sit by me and ask me to work with you. After that, I couldn’t stop myself from falling in love with you. I feel silly for writing a letter, but I’m not really good with words and I am not sure you feel the same. I’m currently writing on the bus ride home, hoping to god the person behind me isn’t looking over the seat. I would be so embarrassed! But- I really hope you do feel the same way, I’ll be crushed if you didn’t. Please don’t think I’m a fool for writing this letter
With love,
(y/n)
By the time Peter got to the end, the smile on his lips were so wide. He found this completely touching and adorable because it was dated about 3 months before you two even began to date towards the middle of freshman year. The fact that you already liked him so much before then also made him a bit giddy.
You had just gotten out from your parents bathroom, having been in there a while trying to find the first aid kit. When you walking back down the hall towards your bedroom you stopped when you heard Swan Lake.
“Oh...oh no-“ your heart dropped as you remember what was in that box and you ran into your room, eyes widen when you saw Peter holding the letter in his hands, “What are you doing?!” The music ended on queue and Peter snapped his head in your direction, seeing your horrified expression. You set the first aid kit onto the dresser near the door and reached to take the note away from him but he dodged your hand, “Give it! Please don’t read it! It’s from a year ago please Peter!” You begged, “I don’t even know what’s in it, it’s probably horrible!” Peter hadn’t said anything, just smiling playfully and keeping the note away from you as you leaned over him, still being aware of his injuries. Although he’d forgotten about his own injuries being distracted by your letter. He fell backwards and groaned in pain swinging his legs over the side of your bed. Your eyes widened.
“I already read it by the way,” Peter said, looking up at where you sat next to him, one leg crossed over the other, “I can’t believe you didn’t give it to me! We could’ve been dating way sooner!” You tilted your head, cheeks heating up as you snatched the letter from him and scanned over it quickly.
“Dear god no- this would’ve slowed things down! This is so- so bad,” you claimed and looked back at him with a major cringe on your face. Peter shook his head disagreeing with you, “I barely knew you- are you telling me you wouldn’t of been freaked out by this? It’s kind of stalkerish.”
“Nope!”
You shook your head in disbelief, and looked back down at the paper, embarrassed by the horrible confession of love whereas Peter was grinning like a child next to you.
“It’s cute that you’ve always had a crush on me,” he teased you, you became flushed and began to fold the sides of the paper nervously, “hey, hey why are you so embarrassed? I liked you too you know.” He admitted, pushing himself up now clenching his side lightly. You set the letter down and got the first aid kit.
“I don’t know why I’m so embarrassed,” you admitted as you took the same spot next to him, “We’re literally dating. And I feel like I can’t even look at you.”
“Well- you got what you wanted,” Peter said as he tapped on the spider logo on his, his suit loosing up and falling off his shoulders to reveal the bloody wounds. Normally when he had his shirt off you wouldn’t able to concentrate, no one should let the nerd demeanor throw them off, he was pretty built and it was nice. The wounds were your main focus, along with that embarrassing letter though, there was no time to ogle.
“Oh yeah?” You asked, a smirk on your lips as you got out the supplies, “And what was it I wanted?”
“For me to return your feelings, thus us beginning to date, you got it all!” he explained, wincing when you began to clean around his wounds, “Why did you never give me the letter? It was really sweet...” he said in a strain voice, you pursed your lips together and looked at him.
“I don’t know, I remember coming home that day and just setting it into the music box and never letting it see the light of day again.”
“There must’ve been a- ow,” he closed his eyes and bit his bottom lip and you seized cleaning one of the bigger wounds, looking at him with a sorry look, “a reason!” You licked your lip as you began to think back to that day, and it suddenly hit you. You laughed sadly.
“The next day, I ran into this girl and she was crying. And I asked her what was wrong and she said that she sent a long text to her crush about how much she liked him and he completely ignored her, and that he wouldn’t talk to her,” you explained, Peter frowned, “So as you can tell...that really discouraged me.”
“What a damn jerk,” Peter said raising a brow, “I wouldn’t of done that to you, I mean- look at us now-“
“Me cleaning up your wounds after a year of dating?” You chirped and he smiled fondly.
“Well- we could be doing more!” He teased and wiggled his eyebrows and you rolled your eyes, “Woah! I meant watching a movie together and cuddling! What were you thinking?”
“There will be no cuddling because you’re hurt,” you gestured to his wounds and he scoffed and put out his bottom lip. You continued to clean up in wounds in silence, suppressing that smile on your lips.
When he was all clean and bandaged up, you dug into your extra clothes and handed him a pair of sweatpants and then gave him one of your large sweatshirts you wore in the colder weather. You helped him get it on, pulling the sweatshirt gently over his back and stomach. He wasn’t hiding the fact that it hurt, and you pat the spot next to you.
“Thought we were going to watch a movie,” he said, crawling next to you onto your bed and settling down facing you, propping his head up with his right arm. You shook your head.
“M’ kind of tired,” you mumbled, fluffing your pillow. Peter blinked, and noticed that he was pretty tired too, Aunt May knew he was going over to your place, so sleeping over wouldn’t be the worst thing. He leaned over, catching your lips into a kiss and with a cheeky grin he said, “Thank you for taking care of me (y/n), I don’t know what I’d do without you. Everyday spent with you has been the best days of my life and I can’t wait for more!” Your eyes widen and you flicked him in the shoulder as he laughed loudly, falling into his back. You nuzzled your head into his arm, not wanting to lay on him due to his injuries.
“Everything in that letter was true by the way, Peter.” You said, closing your eyes. Peters eyes were already closed, but there was a smile on lips before both of you fell asleep.

What’s Past is Prologue, What to Come
The first in a series of interrelated vignettes from Jughead Jones’s obsession with Betty Cooper. Can be read with Marked, part 1 and part 2.
Starts in childhood and will go partway through season 1. If I don’t get bored.
Dark!Jug, Creepy!Jug, Stalker!Jug, generally Sociopathic!Jug
TW for implied abuse, and, as always, gratuitous Shakespeare references
(ao3-->http://archiveofourown.org/works/11394858/chapters/25519734)
The day he met Betty was the day he discovered the monster in his chest.
He stared at her through the boughs of the shrub he’d been sitting in for the last five minutes.
Now that the sun had sunk below the eaves of the house, the underside of the boxwood hedge was dark and cool. The shiny leaves brushed against him, tickling his skin and snagging on his hat. He heard Archie, still counting, through the open bedroom window, but he knew the other boy wouldn’t find him here. Even then Jughead Jones knew Archie Andrews wasn’t very smart. For starters, he hadn’t actually meant that Archie should count to a hundred when he said count to a hundred. Archie kept messing up thirty-three and thirty-four and having to go back.
But that was okay. Archie always had new comic books and he didn’t mind sharing his legos. Plus, when they went over to the Andrews for dinner, there was always enough for seconds. Usually thirds too.
In his green and dappled fortress, Jughead hunkered down for a nice quiet wait. He had a dead frog in his pocket that he’d picked up on the walk over.
Then the gate opened and what he could only describe as a cartoon character come to life walked through. The little girl had curled blonde pigtails, a stiff pink dress, and saddle shoes with ruffled socks. She was the cleanest thing he’d ever seen. She actually glowed.
She also had a tupperware container.
Jughead debated whether or not to come out. On the one hand, Archie was almost done counting and if he came out, he’d almost certainly lose. On the other hand, if he didn’t come out he might not get to eat whatever was in the tupperware. He’d already eaten two hot dogs but he also knew he’d eaten the end of the cereal at their house that morning.
Then the back door opened and Archie ran out, his orange head almost as strong a beacon as her yellow one. “Betty, you came!”
“Of course I did, Archie! And look, my mom sent us brownies!”
Brownies. Okay he was coming out.
He emerged from his crouch in the hedge and the girl—Betty—looked startled.
“Wow, that was a good hiding place, Jug! I never would have found you.”
Jughead shrugged at Archie, but stayed in his place in the bush, his hand around the frog in his pocket.
“Come meet Betty! She’s my new neighbour and she has a sister and a cat and her parents are putting a swimming pool in their yard!”
The girl rolled her eyes. “Archie, I said that was a secret!”
“Jughead’s my best friend, Betty. Secrets don’t count with best friends.” Jughead didn’t think that was true. He was pretty sure there were things his dad hadn’t told Mr. Andrews. Like for instance, he was pretty sure Mr. Andrews didn’t know about the stuff his dad brought home from work. But this didn’t seem to be the moment to point it out.
She moved forward. “Hi Jughead, I’m Betty. Do you want a brownie?”
“Yes.” He stepped out of the shrub and reached up a hand to make sure his hat was on tightly.
He ate three brownies and drank a glass of milk while Archie and Betty argued about what they should play. Archie insisted girls couldn’t play with GI Joes. Betty insisted he was wrong. GI Joe looked exactly like Ken so if Archie wouldn’t share a GI Joe with her, she’d just go bring one of her Ken dolls over. And maybe she’d bring Barbie too.
Archie’s eyes widened in horror. Jughead watched their exchange. The sheer speed with which words left her mouth was disorienting. He didn’t think he’d ever heard either of his parents talk that fast. Or that much.
But he was also fascinated by her hands. She kept making fists and releasing them. They curled so tightly he knew they had to be hurting her. But she kept them by her sides. She never raised them like his father sometimes did late at night.
Archie called him back to the present. “Jug, tell her a Ken doll is not the same as a GI Joe. Ken is for girls.”
Jughead had never seen a Ken doll, but he also didn’t want Betty to leave. So he sided with Betty. Archie only looked hurt for a moment before shrugging and running upstairs for the basket of toys.
He didn’t understand why he couldn’t stop staring at her.
He watched her from his place to her left on the grass. For all Archie’s complaining, as soon as they’d started playing, he’d let Betty take charge of the game. She was currently collecting rocks from around her and ordering Archie to fetch extra food. The GI Joes were going on a stakeout in the desert.
She turned big green eyes on him and asked if he wanted to help her build their fort. He scooted a little bit closer.
When her mother called her home, a sharp Elizabeth traveling over the tall, white fence, Betty had looked scared. Immediately, Jughead had a vision of her mom as a fire-breathing dragon. Or as the evil stepmother wanting to lock Betty away in a tower. Something black and foreign clawed its way up his throat and for a moment his vision tunneled. The thing roared in his ears. Jughead had never wanted to play knight before, but he wanted to protect Betty Cooper. He wanted a sword to swing and charge and whack at her mother.
He watched her slip back through the gate and into her own yard. Through the slats of the fence, he could see her mother yelling, saying things like You knew what time you had to be home and where is my tupperware and how did you get grass stains on your dress. Betty stared at her shoes. Jughead wished again for a sword. He wished the thing inside him could come out. Archie kept playing with his GI Joe.
That night, when Archie fell asleep, Jughead rolled out of his sleeping bag and crept to the windowsill. Her curtains were open. A nightlight illuminated a tiny figure hunched on the bed. If he didn’t breathe, he could hear the strangled sound of her crying.
Without thinking, he pulled the head off the GI Joe that had been on the floor next to him.
He wanted to hit whoever made Betty cry. He wanted to hit Betty so she’d keep crying.
When his mother left for Toledo the first time, taking a black eye and a ten month-old Jellybean with her, when his father said he was too young to be left alone and dropped him off at the Andrews for a couple hours that turned into five days, Betty Cooper baked him cookies.
By then, he was used to her feeding him. The instances in which Betty appeared at the Andrews house unaccompanied by baked goods were few and far between. She seemed to use them to unlock the magic door that kept her imprisoned. She used them cut a path in the tangled forest that isolated her tower. She used them like an excuse so her mother would let her come over.
The times Archie wasn’t home, the times his parents would fight and Jughead would sneak his way past them or out his window, and would run and run and climb until he could fling himself into the treehouse in the corner of Archie’s yard, Betty’s blonde head would appear, quickly followed a small plastic bag or a tupperware container. When he was really lucky, she’d also bring a sandwich.
On the third day of Gladys and FP’s absence, when Jughead was beginning to wonder if he was an orphan, Betty had arrived.
Betty told him these cookies were special. Polly, older than them and so infinitely wise, had helped bake them. Archie was made to promise not to eat any. They had chocolate chips but no walnuts, which her mom normally put in. They had reese’s pieces. They had pretzels. And they were as big as two of his hands.
He ate four while Betty took off her coat.
As usual, he noted how clean she was. He wasn’t sure if pink was her favourite color — he’d never asked her — but she sure wore it a lot. Today, though, she had a white gauze bandage wrapped around her right forearm.
Polly the infinitely wise hadn’t been able to find the oven mitts. “So I used a dish towel, only it didn’t work as good. So when my hands got too hot — well I’m not sure cause it happened so fast — but I think I must have tried to balance the tray on my arm instead and then I burned myself.” Tears sprung to her eyes and her lower lip wobbled. “Juggie, it hurt.”
The black thing in his chest, the monster, shifted in its cage. He hugged Betty, because that’s what you were supposed to do. That’s what Mrs. Andrews had done the day before when Jughead had stubbed his toe and said a word that made Archie turn as red as his hair.
Betty sighed and turned her face into his neck.
“What if I sign it? We can color it and draw pictures.”
“It’s not a cast, Juggie.”
“So? It looks the same. And then when you look at it, you can remember how much fun coloring is instead of how much it hurt.” She looked at him the way baby Jellybean sometimes did.
Betty had been right, though. A gauze bandage was not the same as a cast. He’d picked a red marker and Betty had picked a pink one — maybe that really was her favorite color — but soon after they started, the colors began to bleed together, and Betty winced and then she started to cry for real. Something darker than the red marker reached up and swallowed the letters of their names.
Mrs. Andrews wasn’t mad. Mrs. Andrews was never mad. Jughead had never even heard her yell. She just took Betty into the bathroom and sat her on the toilet and pulled out a first aid kit.
Jughead hovered in the doorway, shifting from foot to foot. His eyes bugged out when she unwrapped the bandage.
A red, shiny patch as big as a baseball covered the inside of Betty’s forearm. But in the middle of that, old, brown blood had crusted, and something yellow and oozing seeped around it. The red of the fresh blood flowed in and through the the raised yellow bits, making tracks like water between tiles. Tiny blisters ringed the whole mess. He couldn’t tear his eyes away from it.
It was made up of brighter versions of the same colors Betty’s fists made when she clenched them.
But soon enough, Mary had it rewrapped, with a fresh layer of neosporin under the bandage. Betty smiled at him through the droplets that clung to her eyelashes.
“It’s probably time for you to go home now, Betty. We don’t want your mom to be mad.”
“Okay,” said Betty in a small voice. She hugged Jughead and ran out.
When Betty left, Jughead retreated to the treehouse with his cookies. Mr. and Mrs. Andrews had been making Archie leave him alone unless he said he wanted company. He didn’t.
He’d discovered he could see into Betty’s room. She’d forgotten her Nancy Drew binoculars the week before and he could use them to see through her window to the mirror above her dresser. And then he could usually see her sitting on her bed. It wasn’t as good as the view from Archie’s window, but it was good enough.
Jughead took the red and yellow markers out of his pocket. He used his right arm to draw on his left.
When it had been nine days, FP returned. He smelled and his beard had grown in and Jughead was pretty sure he was wearing the same clothes. Mr. Andrews had given him a look, a look Jughead had noticed passing between the two men increasingly often, but ultimately, Jughead had been bundled into his coat and sent back to the trailer park.
He went inside but his dad stopped to sit on the steps. When Jughead came back to check on him a while later, he had fallen asleep. Jughead sidled around to his front. There was a small, familiar lump in FP’s front shirt pocket. He reached in and removed the lump gingerly, then snuck back inside with it clutched in his hand. Curled up in his bed with his back to the door, he cupped a palm around the lighter and flicked the flame on and off.

Characters
Grace Eva Carter
‘Her big Bambi eyes looked at the world, as if she lived six lives before. She straightened her white collar even after drinking all dad’s bourbon secretly and biting another cigarette, which she tried simply because she’s never tried it before. She did everything gracefully from the meetings at the palaces to remedial work at the school garden. That was Gracie Carter: young mischievous child, the proud princess, wounded fawn soul. She was loved by everyone, even if they could not admit it. She was different for all of them, but nobody known what she’s hide behind this cold smile and white collar.’
James Thompson
‘He was clean, honest, true. He was just a boy who played guitar and repaired car from inaction, shamelessly smoking, exciting the minds of girls who followed him with enchanted views. James wasn’t a classical pretty boy, he wasn’t those favorite-school-sportsman-guy. He wasn’t a bum, he wasn’t afraid of hard work, you could always count on this boy. What kind of madness - whether books or songs, which told him about it, he was full of courage and passingly fought when at stake was the honor and dignity. He spoke in adult way about children's stories. He was the kind of guy who will sacrifice himself for the friend. He was the Peter Pan of the city: a children's spontaneity and ironic wisdom merged in his young body, forming a noble boy from the suburbs which is still believes that the good must conquer evil, the weak must be protected, and love is stronger than any obstacle’
Charles Brooks
‘It was a young man, born in a good family of the lawyer and the titled lady daughter. Since childhood, his life was a regular series of math classes, horseback riding lessons and the noble-gentlemen school visits - he had no chance of raise someone other than a decent boy, possessor of fine aristocratic manners. Obedience made him a son you can be proud of; as a brother and their father, Charlie was prepared for the fate of kingdom servant with all the attendant duties. He was one of those who did not break the rules for nothing and did not indulge whims, if it could tarnish his name. Adults ruined his child's nature, which craved adventure and adrenaline. He thought about the future every minute. He lived his future so much, to forget why he needs it. Looking at Grace, he recalled. He always wanted to be worthy this girl.’
Chelsea Brown
‘Who was Chelsea nobody knew. Girl-freak, crazy classmate with burnt crimson hair, dressed like a bum from the nineties, most of the time she was silent, reacting only to insults. Whoever this girl was, she didn’t get anyone close, never did the first step. She was so scared of idea being simple, standard, cliché; she did everything to avoid people, even when it wasn’t what she really wanted. She was surrounded by those who insulted her, who behaved dishonestly, unfairly, someone who gave her that stupid nickname "fleasy" simply because she brought a sick kitten to school. She didn’t want to be like them but she didn’t knew what to do. It was her way of survival and protection - an incredible aggression, when someone tried to open up her thin material. But in all this movement you could see the grace, which is not available to some true ladies. She was a sick kitten, Chelsea Brown, and no one knew how to help her. She was a beauty, hidden behind the rough clothes. Her eyes were shining, but no one was looking at them. Nobody knew her.’
Zac Sanders
‘His honey eyes shined so brightly you won’t ever overlook this wonderful hunk, even if you do your best. He will find you anyway in the crowd and captivate with his charm, leaving no chance to forget about himself for a long time. It’s like he had beating fountain of youth and beauty inside, and Zack knew how to use it for its intended purpose; for his amorous adventures composed legends, he had the time, effort and ingenuity for everyone. He loved the attention and the girls, but it wasn’t about meanness. Zack was an honest scoundrel, and before he get, he didn’t disdain to give. His passions were not serious and long-lasting; but every lady who has been at least once in the arms of this villain, remained happy and grateful. This was the essence of him - he was a true romantic.’
Emma Morel
‘This little girl kept a greater force inside of her soul than it might seem. At sixteen, Emma was alone and independent - not by choice, but by life circumstances. Nevertheless, it didn’t make her better adapted to the reality which sometimes was very cruel to her. She was the girl who still displays the date in the fields and fills tests with colorful pens. The child at heart, Emma believed that humans can’t be evil by nature, and if they are, they need help. Her help. She always wanted to take care of someone or something, even if she won’t get thanks in the end. She was naive, stubbornly didn’t want to see the dark side of anything, this was her weakness and advantage. Her great warm heart did not protect her from the bloody loneliness, and the pursuit of a righteous life repelled people. It was crazy reserve of love inside of her, but no one thought that even a small proportion of it deserved falling in the dense forest of doubts and prejudices, which were actually… a fear.’
Ethan Kits
‘Such guys as Ethan Kits, can be included in the history of the world frauds. Thousand times teachers could call him an incompetent bummer, but everyone knew that this boy had very… kind of special talent. He was able to twist somebody around his finger. So easy, quickly and accurately, you couldn’t have time to think at all. He was a clever, and what is most important in this skill - charming. Needless to say, Ethan was a dreamboat, the girls went crazy over him. And he was crazy about the feeling of danger and broke the rules for fun, because it gave him a true pleasure. His reputation was buried under the thousands remarks that he took off classmates clothes again, beating them in poker. He loved money and always had them, despite his old shabby converses and dirty backpack. No, he did not like the feeling of wealth and power, he liked the feeling of testing himself for strength. Such as Kits, they called "honest thief", he always used his skills to help his friends. He broke off, ran for help, couldn’t remain indifferent, and any bad company couldn’t change that. He had a dirty conscience, but a pure heart.’
Kim Fisher
‘Kim was a girl who wanted to find herself all the time while she tied high heels buckle and continued to imitate curly hair by burning them with the bleach. She looked at those who were popular, who enjoyed the attention, seemed cooler and did everything to be with them in a same row. She did not understand what is she. She didn’t understand, she doesn’t need any of these victims. She doesn’t need such a vulgar makeup or loud laugh or losing her virginity before the others to feel worthy. She was just a lost little girl, who was looking for attention, which wasn’t given by her parents. She was looking for it in everything, but found only emptiness and disappointment. She was considered as anything - a slut, thoughtless, abnormal; only those who have been with her since the beginning, since the iron braces times, knew how much pain hided Kimberly Fisher.’
Martie Abrams
‘Martie was a boy, a wonk, which cool guys were ashamed to talk. Number of offensive nicknames that were attributed to him, neared to a huge number, and he didn’t dare to protest. Either he was afraid, and because he felt nonsense of any protest. When he ceased to be hated, he ceased to be seen at all. Why? He didn’t do anything for it, blazing feelings to the girl, who looked down on him and get round. Martie, being a loner, was insanely unhappy. But the saddest thing - he didn’t even try to change anything. He didn’t feel the strength to destroy the wall to get out of his comfort zone. Was it justified? Perhaps. Unlike all those "cool guys", he never was what he isn’t. He’s been himself trying to cope with the pain that waited for him at every step. Outcast, geek, nerd, dork. The boy, who wore a sweater that was knitted by his mom for Christmas. He tried to feel his significance and once decided that music could help him.’
Elizabeth 'Liz' Device
‘Elizabeth was a wonderful girl. She had energy for a several military divisions, and the power of her voice amazed even cynics. Self-confident, "proud black woman," as she called herself, Liz realized all her flaws much deeper than she could show it to others. She was still painful to hear insults like "fatty" and felt her insignificance in comparison with the girls in pink dresses, which ran on a date every night. She never showed those feelings. No one even imagined she had such problems. Despite her impulsiveness and emotionality, she’s been doing everything to believe that everything is ok – what could be a better solution? No one wanted to argue with her, which was both useful and sad at the same time. She could let herself tears only with the door closed: for all her friends, Liz was a real sun, which did not cease to shine even in the gloomy days and hit her Beyonce-manners. It was for all of Liz, a girl with a perpetual supply of power and good mood. Nobody even knew how much she wanted to wear that pink dress.’
Olivia McKenzie
‘You've probably seen such girl on the cover of prom albums, with the crown, snow-white smile and perfect blond hair - a typical school queen, a typical girl who was loved by everyone, no exceptions. What distinguishes Olivia - goodness of heart and a lack of vulgarity. She would never have gone to the meanness to achieve goals, never betrayed and lied to get more points, cause she was brought up so – parents, who gave all their warmth, provided her a favorable future. It wasn’t necessary for her to fight for anything and that was her weakness. Olivia was beautiful, decent, quiet and modest; she didn’t say too much, didn’t want to attract the attention and still had it more than any ‘cool girl’. It seemed like she was shy of her own beauty, voice or talent. She did not allow herself to be wrong, till life itself hasn’t given her such opportunity. There were no visible defects in her that prompted doubts in others, who were constantly looking for them. The trick is that they actually didn’t exist. Was it a privilege? You never know.’
Ian Lim
‘In fact, we’re all lucky to know Ian. It was incredibly hard to meet someone amazing in high school, and he was truly amazing lad. Raised in a traditional family with a whole pack of children, he always kept something most of us unknowingly lost - good, warm heart. Unlike many of the guys, he always remembered that before you get into the door, you must put the ladies first, and the importance of giving each of them his hand, when we left the bus. Each one - even 25 times. Having him as a boyfriend must be the greatest gif, but he didn’t think so. Ien was a little bit insecure and shy, and the attempt to get rid of it ended catastrophically. He still resented racist remarks toward him and secretly worried about it. The only thing that makes him feel as free as a bird is the dancing. He danced divinely, we loved to watch him on the floor and secretly hope that he’d pull out some of us and whirl in the air. With him all the complex movements obtained without any effort, because he gave his energy to everyone who took his hand once. He was very kind, honest, clean and nice asian gentleman. I believe we’re truly lucky to know him. ’
Cleo Edwards
‘Cleo was one of those school girls who you probably wouldn't notice in empty room. She talked quietly, moved slow and avoid any contact with the outside world of ruthless teenagers, where she was just a freak and a ghost of little girl who kept her mouth shut 99% of the time. The world she lived in was extremely cruel to Cleo, but she never concealed anger in return and looked it in the eyes with childish delight and fear of being superfluous at the feast, where she still was an uninvited one. Maybe this was a real reason of hiding a bunch of talents she had - from sports to singing, from dancing to being an excellent friend, daughter and pupil. She distorted her voice, been panically afraid to join the ranks of cheerleading and admitted herself that she is a little bit different in her preferences and tastes. The realization that being different is normal and even cool was the hardest decision in Cleo's life before she entered the vocal club’.
Chip 'Chipa' Wilkinson
‘Chipa was the shiniest boy in a school where everything faded year by year. Short, a little plump - he looked like an eccentric in any company, but had such a bright and loud charisma that always gave him a lot of friends, even among those cool guys from basketball team. Making joke of himself, he became a school meme with those funny nickname 'Cookie' he was called since childhood. He allowed everybody to do that with him. Somehow still he was hurt while nobody was watching; he never dreamed of having friends from bascketball team. Well, everything he ever wanted was to become a basketball player himself. Everybody told he was too short, too fat, too ugly - so Chipa decided to be the coolest of the ugliest, shortest, fattest. He found his own way of healing - and that was the greatest power of that shiny boy'.

A Chaotic Family History
You know that horrible pounding you get in your head when you have a sinus infection? Ugh. I’ve been experiencing it now for the past three days and I can barely leave my couch. During this time I’ve had the opportunity to think slowly and foggily (Because let's face it. Sinus meds are no joke.) about this blog I have started, and how I’d like to proceed.
So first up: A Somewhat Chaotic Family History.
I was born in 1979 in Springfield, Massachusetts, which is approximately two hours west of Boston with moderate traffic. I am the sixth of seven children, and the youngest girl, of what we now know as a “blended family”.
My mother is a first generation american, born of immigrant parents. My maternal grandfather, whom we called GrandDaddy, immigrated from Germany. My maternal grandmother, whom we called Baka, immigrated from Poland. I do not know the year either arrived in this country, but I do know that Baka was born on July 19, because her birthday is the day before mine. I do not know the year, and I haven’t been able to find out. The story goes that Baka was GrandDaddy’s second wife, his first being a leather wearing, motorcycle riding, floozy. Is this true? I have no idea. I do not believe any children came of that marriage, but I do not know for sure. I’ve also been told that on the day of my grandparent’s wedding, my grandmother tried to climb out the bathroom window to escape the marriage, but was dragged back in by her mother and compelled to go forward with the ceremony. Again, I have no idea how much of that is true.
My Baka and GrandDaddy went on to have four children. Vivian, Franklin Jr., Elizabeth and my mother whom everyone called “Poppy” (deceased; end stage dementia). My poor Mama.
GrandDadddy died when I was four or five, on July 4. I have extremely vague memories of him. He eventually died of pneumonia, after spending a couple of years in a nursing home due to Alzheimer's Disease. I have no memories of him in the nursing home. Baka died in 2015 of a stroke, but I do not know the day.
I’d like to stop here and mention that there is a reason I don’t know exact birth dates, death dates, etc, and it is not due to my own disinterest. There is a clear reason, which we will get into soon.
My father’s side of the family is a bit more of a mystery. My paternal grandmother is still living. She was born March 30, 1924, and as you may have read in my last posting, she has been recovering in a nursing home in Maine due to a fall and a MRSA infection. She’s doing well at last report :::knocks wood::: and will hopefully be able to go home in a few weeks.
I know very very little about my father’s heritage. I’ve been told so many different things, that at this point I don’t know what to believe. In fact, as I type this, I am eyeing the DNA test kit I received as a Christmas gift. I really need to send that in. I’m dying to know the truth.
Anyway, I know my paternal grandmother, whom we called Grammie, has been married twice. Her first marriage was to my paternal grandfather, whom I have never met, and to whom we've always referred to as “Dad’s Dad”. Their marriage produced three children. Theodore (deceased; suicide), my father Prescott, whom everyone called Red, and Betty (deceased; Multiple Sclerosis).
And now for story time; The story goes that my paternal grandfather was a raging alcoholic and an abusive husband and father. I do not know if this is true. As I said, I have never met him. I’m not sure if I’ve ever even seen a picture of him. My grandmother was a single mother for many many years until she met and married the man I would come to know as my grandfather, whom we called Grampy. Grampy was born on December 1, 1928. He and Grammie’s marriage produced a son, my Uncle David. I’m not sure if Grampy already owned the yellow farmhouse, or if they bought it together. But I do know that Grammie still owns the tiny red two bedroom house that she owned as a single mother with three children. I’ll have to see if I can hunt down some pictures.
Grampy died November 8, 2000 of a heart attack.
I know very little about my own parents, or how they became a couple. I do know that my mother married a man named Danny Lyson when she was 17 and rumor has it she was pregnant with my sister Janine. My Mom was born January 16, 1945 (exact date of birth obtained from her death certificate), so that would mean my sister was born around 1962. I have no idea of her exact birthdate, nor can I ask her. That marriage also produced my brother Michael, born June 5, 1967 (exact date of birth obtained from his gravestone; suicide).
Here’s where things get really murky. My mother and her first husband split up at some point. There’s stories of abuse, infidelity (on both sides), and a meddling mother-in-law. I’ve been told stories about my mother’s first husband and his mistress having dinner at his mother’s house, and how his mother was so obsessive that she attempted to take my sister Janine as her own when Michael was born because “Janine should never have to share anything with anyone”. Once again, I have no idea what is true and what isn’t, and I have no way of finding out.
At some point my Mom became involved with a man named Sal, and she eventually gave birth to my sister Jennifer. I’m not sure why, but Danny Lyson is listed as the father on Jennifer’s birth certificate. It had something to do with my mother and Danny still being legally married at the time Jennifer was born. However Sal being from italian and hispanic descent, means Jennifer’s parentage was obvious from the start. I was told that Baka even rejected Jennifer when she was born because she had a darker complexion as the rest of her family.
At some point my mother befriended a woman named Carrie, and even began babysitting her children; a daughter Ruth (born September 2, 1972), and a son Prescott Jr. (born August 19, 1969). I’ve been told that Carrie and my mom were best friends, and were essentially joined at the hip. I have deduced that they met through their husbands, who worked together in the early 70’s. Have you guessed who Carrie’s husband is? That’s right, my Dad.
I’m not sure when the affair began, or who initiated, but I do know that my mother was the cause of my father’s divorce. I know my mother and father lived in apartments across the hall from each other at some point, but I don’t know if they were still with their first spouses at that time. Regardless of the exact dates, my parents were married April 2,1978, and I was born the following year on July 20, 1979. My baby brother Nathan was born April 19, 1984.
So if you’re keeping score; that’s 7 children, 2 mothers, and 3 fathers to keep track of.
Well this has been a tedious, but necessary family history. And now that you know who the main “players” are, I can now get into the interesting stuff...

Talks Machina: In the Dark - March 28, 2017
MARISHA: You got this buddy.
BRIAN: We're back. Talks Machina in the Dark.
OFFSCREEN VOICE: No!
MATT: [laughing] "No!"
[all laughing]
BRIAN: Talks Machina... After Dark.
MARISHA: Yes!
BRIAN: Yeah!
MARISHA: Yeah.
MATT: There we go.
BRIAN: Well, we have questions from the Alpha chat, which we take for this portion of the show.
MATT: Hi, Alpha chat!
MARISHA: [in a lispy voice] Hi, Alpha chat!
BRIAN: We have questions for Matt and Marisha and for Fan Friction Film, sometimes Films.
CAIT (VEX): Sometimes, but only sometimes.
BRIAN: Up first. Question for Marisha. What's it like seeing cosplays of Keyleth compared to how you view her in your head.
MARISHA: I love every single one. One of my favorite things about, like, seeing all the Keyleth cosplays is seeing each person's interpretation of her. It's the same way that I feel about like the fan art as well 'cause they're all our own mind-canons... head-canons... I like mind-canons.
BRIAN: Last week you said "future-thinky."
MATT: Mind Cannon is, I think, a level six ability.
MARISHA: Future thinky!
BRIAN: Last week she said--she was like, "It's good to be future-thinky."
MATT: [talking quietly about "Mind Cannons"]
BRIAN: Yeah, those Mind Cannons? Yeah. More powerful than a Firebolt.
MATT: Yeah. Well, that's kind of what's cool about, y'know, shows like this, because, y'know, while Kit did the official designs--"official"--it's open to such interpretation because each character is by everyone's imagination. It's all just a narrative thing, so everyone has their own idea--their own creation of what they interpret--
MARISHA: Yeah.
MATT: --and that is kind of why it's so amazing to see people in many ways do a better job, y'know, illustrating or showing things that I imagine in my head.
MARISHA: And we dressed as our characters for the opening title sequence--
MATT: Right.
MARISHA: --so we know how difficult and uncomfortable this shit is.
MATT: Yeah.
MARISHA: So every time we see someone we're like, "Damn!"
MATT: I feel you.
MARISHA: Yeah, like this? [gestures to the FFF group] Yeah, we feel you.
CAIT (VEX): Well, and like--
BRIAN: Brandon got here three weeks ago to start putting on makeup.
MARISHA: I know, right! Basically.
CAIT (VEX): Every time you guys add something to the character, like, in canon, like every time they get a new, like, item--
BRIAN: Or a vestige, or yeah.
CAIT (VEX): Yeah, something happens. It's cool as a cosplayer to A) have some creative freedom to do, like, maybe you've wanted to build something that looks like this but you haven't had, like, a reason to do it before or, like, B) to continue to be able to, like, add and evolve a costume. Like, you're never--you're never really done with it.
[general agreement]
CAIT (VEX): And it's also nice too that there's no, like, true, like, canon-canon-canon version of this because cosplay can--it can get kind of competitive sometimes. People, like--
MARISHA: Want the screen-accurate--
CAIT (VEX): --want--yeah, they want the screen accurate--
MARISHA: Yeah.
CAIT (VEX): --or they want--they want to be the best or whatever--
MARISHA: Right.
CAIT (VEX): --and with this, that's--that's gone, it's eliminated! You can just celebrate the fact that you and somebody else both like the same character enough to make the same costume and that's super cool.
BRIAN: That's awesome.
MARISHA: That's an interesting point that I never thought of, that this is like a weird cosplay where you can actually like level it up with us, which is kinda sick! That's amazing!
CAIT (VEX): If you have Cabal's Ruin--
JULIE (PERCY): I have Cabal's Ruin--
CAIT (VEX): --in the Green Room I think?
MATT: That's awesome!
CAIT (VEX): Yeah!
MARISHA: But yeah, I was just telling Elizabeth [Keyleth cosplayer] before the show I loved the gradient butterflies--
[Elizabeth stands up to show the butterflies off. Somebody wolf-whistles.]
BRIAN: Oh yeah, that is--
MARISHA: --that she did.
BRIAN: --so crazy.
MATT: That's badass.
MARISHA: Which I noticed and like--yeah.
CAIT (VEX): Hey girl.
MARISHA: Yeah. Which I saw that in the music video--
BRIAN: How come when I do that, people get mad?
MARISHA: --and was like "That's so rad!"
ELIZABETH (KEYLETH): You don't have butterflies.
MATT: It's true.
MARISHA: You're jealous of the butterflies.
MISSADVENTURE (PIKE): Get your own butterflies.
MATT: Hashtag: GetBrianHisButterflies.
[laughing]
MATT: That's a thing now.
BRIAN: Here we go. Guys, Matt, what about--this is from Svedwar [user]--
MATT: Svedwar!
BRIAN: What about Freddy and Greg made you break so hard?
[laughing]
MATT: It's--it's hard to explain. When you're so into a moment, especially like the mood-setting of the Hells and like the intensity of a negotiation--really, the first party's negotiation with any sort of devilish entity--in a space that is so dangerous and so out of what they're used to dealing with, I--I was so, like, steeped in that moment and it was less...The Freddy was fine, it was more the...
BRIAN: Greg.
MARISHA: Greg.
MATT: In a way that only Travis can do it, which was like, "It's still practically your name, dude, you just fucked up your O a little bit." And his matter-of-fact Travis way of saying it--
BRIAN: Uh-huh.
MATT: It just... it was a left hook and I just couldn't. Couldn't recover.
BRIAN: Yeah. When you don't see the process happen in his mind, 'cause it just comes out so fast--
MATT: Yeah.
BRIAN: --it just gets you off-guard. Travis has pulled a few of those. Remember on the Critmas episode when he was reading the cards and he said "Mine says 'Sam lied'"? I was dying.
MATT: Yeah!
BRIAN: It was so fast. San Friction--oh, what a great idea--Bean Princess 19: How about--any plans for a VM/Hamilton cross-over music video?
[general oohing]
CAIT (VEX): Y'know, I suggested this--
BRIAN: You did?!
CAIT (VEX): --when we were--yeah--when we were looking for a song for this--
BRIAN: Yeah!
CAIT (VEX): --because we--we had the idea to do a video before we had the idea to use Critical Hit by No More Kings -- that's the name of the song in the video.
BUCKLE (VAX): Title drop!
CAIT (VEX): Ayy! Check them out! They're super-cool, really nice guys and really like very supportive of this whole thing.
BRIAN: Yeah!
CAIT (VEX): But before we had that song, we knew we wanted to do a video. We searched, seriously, collective group-effort searching, like fifteen hours going through Spotify and the internet, YouTube, reddit, whatever. And at one point I was like "What if we just used Hamilton?" And it was immediately shot down. They were just like "It's not gonna be funny." And I was like--
BRIAN: Oh, yeah?
BUCKLE (VAX): I didn't say that, I said--
BRIAN: Oh! Who shot it down, I wonder, hmm!
BUCKLE (VAX): I just outed myself again.
BRIAN: Oh no.
MISSADVENTURE (PIKE): Hiding in the closet with the cutting board.
[giggling laughter from everyone throughout]
BUCKLE (VAX): I said that Hamilton--I want a divorce.
BRIAN: Oh no! No, not on this show! Please save it 'til after! I get enough grief!
BUCKLE (VAX): We're not even married yet.
MATT: So get married...
BUCKLE (VAX): We're engaged!
MATT: Congratulations!
BRIAN: Congrats!
BUCKLE (VAX): Thank you!
MARISHA: Hey, engaged couples!
BRIAN: Yeah!
MATT: Yay!
[they high-five]
CAIT (VEX): Hey, we did it this time! I'm really proud.
MARISHA: We did it, yeah!
BUCKLE (VAX): See, practice works.
MARISHA: Engagement bros.
BRIAN: You don't have to say when it is, but have you picked out a date?
BUCKLE (VAX): What I said is that Hamilton was so much of a--
MISSADVENTURE (PIKE): Mid-October.
BUCKLE (VAX): Hamilton was so much of a phenomenon on--
MARISHA: Oh! October bros!
[all laughig]
BRIAN: Sorry.
MARISHA: Sorry, continue.
BUCKLE (VAX): Nobody cares about this anyway.
[all laughing]
BRIAN: What day?
MARISHA: What day? Do you have a day yet?
MISSADVENTURE (PIKE): I don't think we've picked out a day yet, but it's not--it's not--
BUCKLE (VAX): November. We want fall.
MARISHA: Yeah.
CAIT (VEX): One of you said October, one of you said November.
BUCKLE (VAX): We've talked about this.
BRIAN: There'll be two weddings. One for her, one for h--yeah.
BUCKLE (VAX): Our relationship transcends pesky things like dates and numbers.
BRIAN: I respect that.
BUCKLE (VAX): We're not into that.
MATT: Esoteric dates.
MISSADVENTURE (PIKE): I mean, we forgot about our anniversary this year, so clearly--
[all laughing]
BRIAN: "We" did? Or--
BUCKLE (VAX): Mom, Dad, we love each other--
BRIAN: --we did?
BUCKLE (VAX): --a lot, and--
BRIAN: If you both forget, it's fine.
DENISE-CC: [inaudible] Who gets the cutting board?
BRANDON (GROG): "Who gets the cutting board?"
BRIAN: "Who gets the cutting board?" Who said that? Denise?!
[all laughing]
CAIT (VEX): I'm keeping Denise.
BRIAN: Who gets the cutting board in the divorce?
[continued laughing]
MISSADVENTURE (PIKE): Well, it's relatively squarish, so I want the panhandle.
BRIAN: Oh my god.
CAIT (VEX): It looks like a knife, honestly, like a toothbrush.
MISSADVENTURE (PIKE): It looks a little bit like a butcher's knife.
BRIAN: I'm sure we'll see it on Dateline at some point.
[laughing chatter]
BUCKLE (VAX): I'm sure we're not the only people who feel this way, but after ten years together, one day just seems arbitrary.
BRIAN: Yeah.
MATT: Totally.
MARISHA: Yeah.
BUCKLE (VAX): It--it--one day, no matter how fantastic, cannot hold a candle to a life together, y'know?
MISSADVENTURE (PIKE): Oh, that's poetic!
MARISHA: When Vox Machina talks about being family, this is what we mean.
[Marisha is gesticulating, brushing up against Matt’s mic, which he gently tries to guide her hand away from, eliciting laughter]
MARISHA: Sorry.
[more laughing]
MARISHA: Fuck your mic! [mimes elbow-dropping his mic]
MATT: Chat room is like, "Yaaagh, RIP ears! Back to episode two!”
BUCKLE (VAX): Now that we've made it really awkward and personal, what's the next question?
[all laughing]
MATT: No, that's awesome, thanks for sharing!
BRIAN: Next question is...how long have you guys been together?
[all laughing]
BUCKLE (VAX): Ten years!
CAIT (VEX): Approximately five minutes.
BRIAN: We're gonna systematically watch the end of a relationship.
CAIT (VEX): We met in the parking lot.
BRIAN: And we saved it for Alpha.
BUCKLE (VAX): Well, we met you [Cait] on Craigslist, so it's not out of the question.
CAIT (VEX): Technically, I met you on--or, no, you met me on Craig's List! You found me!
MATT: That's how we [Matt & Marisha] met!
[awwwww]
CAIT (VEX): They're my Craig's List roommates, which I feel like explains a lot.
BRIAN: That's how I got my job--that's how I got my job at Two Broke Girls, was on--
[laughing]
BRIAN: --Craigslist. You know how many broke girls are on the show now? I have a lot of trivia. There’s two.
[laughing]
MATT: God dammit, Brian.
BRIAN: Guys, are there any characters...are there any other characters--this is from Vex'ahlia--
CAIT (VEX): Heyyyy.
BRIAN: Hey, I don't know, I told you guys not to submit questions, please.
CAIT (VEX): Sorry.
BRIAN: Kidding. Are there any other characters from Critical Role you want to cosplay and if so, who?
[Ulthar starts reaching for the mic]
BRIAN: Scanlan is itching. Give him the mic, at once!
ULTHAR (SCANLAN): I have developed a very deep need--like, literally yesterday--to be Tiberius.
ULTHAR (SCANLAN): I'm going to figure this out. If I have to glue rhinestones to my skin...
MARISHA: With the horns and everything?
ULTHAR (SCANLAN): I'll need, like, foot-tall platform boots.
MARISHA: Yeah.
JULIE (PERCY): I believe in you.
BRIAN: Make sure you use glue that's skin-appropriate.
BRANDON (GROG): Out of context.
BRIAN: Yeah, yeah. Not like I did.
ULTHAR (SCANLAN): Hot glue. Entirely hot glue.
CAIT (VEX): You wanna just pass it along?
BRIAN: Yeah, are there any NPCs or anyobody else?
JULIE (PERCY): I actually cosplayed Vax. That was actually the first one that I did, for the Halloween contest.
MATT: Yeah, yeah, yeah!
MARISHA: Oh, rad!
JULIE (PERCY): So that was really fun. I don't know. It's a joke among my friends and I that we all, like, plan to cosplay all of Vox Machina at one point.
[laughing]
JULIE (PERCY): Like, each and every character.
BRIAN: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
JULIE (PERCY): And it's fun.
BRANDON (GROG): I'm pretty dedicated to Grog.
[general chatter]
DENISE-CC: I will be Vex'ahlia for WonderCon in the masquerade with my Grog.
[cheering]
ELIZABETH (KEYLETH): That's awesome!
BRIAN: That's awesome. Elizabeth?
ELIZABETH (KEYLETH): I have a cosplay habit of looking at the tallest, most masculine manly-man in anything and being like, "I wanna be that one, but a girl!" And, as I started listening to CritRole, I was making Keyleth, but I was making eyes at Grog going, "I really, really wanna be Grog."
MARISHA: Dude, oh, do it!
MATT: FemGrog!?
ELIZABETH (KEYLETH): I wanna be FemGrog!
MATT: That would be amazing!
ELIZABETH (KEYLETH): So I want to go from tiny, tiny slim druid to like--
MARISHA: To buff Grog.
ELIZABETH (KEYLETH): To buff Grog
MARISHA: Barbarian, man.
MATT: Do it. Do it.
ELIZABETH (KEYLETH): So yeah, maybe one day.
MARISHA: I appreciate that.
BRIAN: [reacting to a question in Alpha] Is this true?!
MISSADVENTURE (PIKE): Is what true?
BRIAN: Sorry.
MATT: Continue.
BRIAN: Continue. I saw a provocative question come through, I'm scared now.
MISSADVENTURE (PIKE): I mean, Pike was always sort of my one-and-done. I am Pike, she is me. But if I had to, probably Doty.
[general cheering]
BRIAN: I would love to see that.
MISSADVENTURE (PIKE): Would you put on a fake beard for me?
BUCKLE (VAX): Well now I have to, for Taryon, because I love me a beard.
MATT: You could just go gem shopping. All the gems.
MISSADVENTURE (PIKE): Oh man. That's what I love. I love rhinestones.
BRIAN: Go to the goatee store.
BUCKLE (VAX): Ever since the first mention of Percy when I started watching, I pictured this fabulous, like, regency coat, like very tailored with the puffy top and cravats. Not a lot of like--a lot of fanart people do is really great, but it's more fantasy and I--I'm really interested in doing a super-historical, minimalist kind of Percy.
[ooooh]
BUCKLE (VAX): So, I have my designs drawn up and I'm gonna start pretty soon, so.
MARISHA: Oh my gosh, yes.
BRIAN: That is so cool.
CAIT (VEX): And I am cosplaying Vex 'cause she is the character I probably relate to the most, but Percy is my fave and if I thought for a second I could pass, I would have been--I would have been Percy, hands down. But I like looked at my face in the mirror and was like "Mmm, I don't know."
MATT: Oh, that shouldn't stop you.
BRIAN: I do that every day.
[laughing]
CAIT (VEX): No, so, I was--I was like, I think--I think I'm just gonna--I'm just gonna be Vex. Maybe I'll do Percy at some point.
BRIAN: Yeah.
MARISHA: Do it.
BUCKLE (VAX): Everybody's Percy.
CAIT (VEX): Everybody's Percy--that's our next video, we're all Percy.
BRIAN: That would be amazing.
CAIT (VEX): No Mercy Percy, yeah.
BRIAN: Taliesin would be happier than I can say on this program.
[background chatter]
BUCKLE (VAX): ...you can have a lot of copies of the same character and it's fine.
MATT: Yeah.
BRIAN: Yeah!
MISSADVENTURE (PIKE): Yeah, Buckle, it's called Caiter (?) Double.
[laughing]
MATT: It's called, someone cast Seeming.
BRIAN: Oh yeah!
MISSADVENTURE (PIKE): We could do the Seeming where they're only Vex and Vax!
CAIT (VEX): We should do all Vex and Vax! Next video!
[general enthusiasm and agreement]
CAIT (VEX): We've already got multiple Vaxes and multiple Vexes--
MATT: This is amazing.
BRIAN: You're not coming on this show with everyone dressed as Vex and Vax because I will not be able to speak.
[laughing]
BRIAN: I won't be able to get the thing--
CAIT (VEX): We're just gonna break in here--
BRIAN: Please!
CAIT (VEX): --all dressed as Vex and Vax.
MATT: I love it.
BRIAN: How do you think Denise got this job? Guys, someone tell me if this is true. TBoyz [user] tells me: how do you guys feel about the fact that there's a Krogan named Strongjaw Grog in Mass Effect--
MATT: Yes!
BRIAN: --Andromeda.
MATT: That is true, apparently.
MARISHA: Yeah.
BRIAN: Are you jealous that you didn't get an easter egg and how much money did Travis use to bribe EA?
MATT: That's a good question to ask Travis. I'm excited that there's any sort of Critical Role easter egg. We're discovering, as time goes on, at like cartoon recording sessions, video game sessions, general industry folk all over, people are into Critical Role in places you wouldn't expect and we have a lot of people that we're fans of that then conversely we found out are fans of the show and it's been a really cool kind of experience to run into these people and have these conversations. And so yeah, we've seen easter eggs like that starting to show up in mass media--
BRIAN: Yeah!
MARISHA: Yeah.
MATT: It just feels really cool.
MARISHA: We're, "Whaaaaaaat?"
MATT: Almost as cool as having a bunch of people dress up as your entire party.
ELIZABETH (KEYLETH): You said it a was "almost". It was "almost" as cool, so you're saying that we are cooler than Mass Effect: Andromeda?
MATT: Yeah.
MARISHA: Yeah, that--that might be true.
ELIZABETH (KEYLETH): Oh, wow. We're gonna put that on our blogs now: Matt Mercer says we're cooler than Mass Effect.
MISSADVENTURE (PIKE): Cooler than Mass Effect: Andromeda.
[Buckle takes the mic away from Elizabeth]
BUCKLE (VAX): You cannot be trusted with this mic anymore.
[laughing]
CAIT (VEX): Oh, man, yeah that sound bite is never going away.
[laughing]
BRIAN: Yep, that's a lot of this show.
[laughing]
BRIAN: Us saying that to each other. Ask Taliesin. Let's see. Let's pick the last question of the night.
MARISHA: Last question!
BRIAN: If you--this is from Rose Artemis [user]--question for the cast. If you could have someone direct Vox Machina the movie, TV series, who would it be and why? And then you guys [FFF] can say if you have a favorite director or--
MATT: I would say David Milch.
BRIAN: Right?
MATT: Just because it would be ridiculous, filled with the right amount of curse words, and we could get Ian McShane to play everybody.
BRIAN: I know!
[Matt laughing]
MARISHA: That would be amazing.
BRIAN: Ian McShane as Thordak, Ian McShane as everyone. Victor?
MATT: I'd watch it. I don't care if anybody else would watch it, I just want to see it.
BRIAN: I'd watch it, absolutely.
MARISHA: I mean, me and like, y'know...y'know...I feel like maybe Joss Whedon--
BRIAN: Yeah.
MARISHA: --doing like full-on Avengers style, like... got a boner for Joss Whedon's writing shit.
MATT: Don't we all?
MARISHA: So... I mean, yeah.
MATT: Hashtag: MarishasWhedonBoner.
[giggling]
BRIAN: Use the hashtag...no, please guys.
MATT: Please don't do that.
MARISHA: That'd be rad.
MATT: Joss is a good choice because he has the good balance of like action, dramatic, and--
MARISHA: And humor.
MATT: --good humor and characterization.
BRIAN: David Fincher for me!
MARISHA: Ohhh!
[shuffling around]
BRIAN: Oh there's a gift!
CAIT (VEX): We actually have a gift for Matt.
BRIAN: Let's present it to him at once!
MARISHA: Oh boy!
BRIAN: Look at this!
MATT: What the heck?
BRIAN: It's my dick in a box.
MATT: That'd be impressive from over here.
CAIT (VEX): Merry Critmas.
MATT: Thank you guys.
[Matt opens it to reveal the mounted head of the Raishan pinata from the video.]
MATT: Whaaaaat!
BRIAN: What is it? What is it?!
MATT: Holy shit! So in the video, y'know they had the Raishan pinata?
[He pulls it out of the box]
BRIAN: Yeah. Oh, it's--is this the actual one?!
MATT: They mounted it.
BRIAN: Oh my god!
MARISHA: That's amazing!
MATT: That's so awesome! That's living on this set, guys. I hope you know what you've done.
[cheering]
BRIAN: Yeah, it is. Hell yeah, it is.
MARISHA: That's so good.
MATT: That's so good.
MARISHA: I can't believe you mounted it!
BUCKLE (VAX): It's like when your cat--
MATT: Oh shit, look at her eyes!
BUCKLE (VAX): --goes hunting and then it like lays rats on your porch for you.
[laughing]
MATT: It's so good!
BRIAN: That is great.
MATT: And you can totally see she's been Feebleminded.
BUCKLE (VAX): The eyes were very crooked--that's the fixed version.
[laughing]
MATT: That's beautiful.
BRIAN: Maybe we'll put it where that weird thing is.
MARISHA: Oh, that's true!
MATT: Yeah, we can do it.
MARISHA: Yeah, we can fill--for sure, that thing.
[Denise say something off-screen]
BRIAN: What?! We have to ask Denise first?
MARISHA: We have to ask Denise?!
BRIAN: Oh my god. That's all the time we have for tonight, folks. Thank you for watching Talks Machina After Dark. We will see you...at WonderCon, hopefully. We are gonna go off the air, but in ten minutes, AXYB starts at 9 back on Twitch--
[Someone talks off screen]
BRIAN: What?
OFFSCREEN VOICE: Yeah, ten minutes.
BRIAN: That's what I said. Why did you interrupt me?
[laughing]
BRIAN: She's getting--
[Denise making spaced-out nosies off-screen.]
BRIAN: --unhinged. She's become unhinged. The end is near, my friends. Denise will be roaming the streets like Jumanji. Thanks to everyone--
MATT: The video game?
BRIAN: The video game. Thank you guys so much for coming on and for dressing up and for doing this. Will you come back?
[all agreeing]
BUCKLE (VAX): We’re just down the street!
CAIT (VEX): Yeah, let us know, we're literally down the street.
BRIAN: Except for Julie! Julie flew in from Florida.
CAIT (VEX): Yeah, we'll fly her back out here.
BUCKLE (VAX): You're going to have to pry my sweaty ass of this couch.
CAIT (VEX): Aaaaand you've just lost mic privileges, too.
BRIAN: Nope, nope, we love you guys. Thank you! Thank you for coming on, Matt and Marisha. Forgot about you guys. It's so hard with this beautiful--
MATT: I know. We can't blame you.
BRIAN: --array of--
MARISHA: Yeah, no, we're here.
BRIAN: We love you guys. Thank you for watching. Go back to Twitch. Watch AXYB at 9. Thank you so much, we love you. We will see you Thursday for Critical Role.

Chapter 9 - Yes Chef!
Ooh! It's finally my turn to talk! We've never formally met, you've only read about me. Well anyway, my names Elizabeth Brooke Ryan. I go by a few names that my friends and family have come up with, so just pick one of those. Those names are; Elizabeth, Liz, Lizzy, Beth, Eliza, E.B., E.R, E., E. Ry, Ryan, and I think that's it. As you already know I'm youngest of my Ryan family siblings, I'm five foot five, blonde hair, green eyes, and I wear glasses. I didn't do sports like my siblings when I was in high school, I found a different kind of skill that I was good at. Instead I would learn cooking and baking at different rec centers and take classes wherever I could. I just found the whole thing so interesting, and it just came so natural. Despite my reputation as a picky eater. Hey I'm working on it! At this point I'd like to consider myself the best cook in my family. My siblings love being my taste testers and always have been ever since I made my first batch of cookies with mom when I was like..eight. Even though theres a pretty significant age gap between us, we're all close. I'm not any closer to one sibling more than another, I love them all equally. They all took time to take care of me growing up and in different ways. I study at a culinary school in San Diego, and my parents were gracious enough to pay for my entire tuition, but I do work at a restaurant for experience and y'know ya girl needs some spending money. I work at kind of a fancy-ish french restaurant, but I only do prep work. So I'm cutting lots of onions, carrots, potatoes, and crushing a whole mess of garlic. My dream is really to be a chef at a restaurant I love. Simple I know, but I'm a simple person. A lot of people think cooking is a chore or a hassle, but it's something I do that makes me happy and makes me feel creative and special. I live in a small-ish apartment near the school so on occasion I'll walk to school and work, but sometimes I'll feel weird walking around toting around a briefcase looking bag of knives. When I made the decision to go to culinary school it wasn't until I'd already done a year at a traditional college. I wasn't passionate about anything I was taking, and nothing seemed to make me want to dedicate my life to it. It was a real internal struggle since I didn't wanna feel like I was disappointing my parents in going an unconventional route. Though when I did finally tell them they were supportive. I don't know why I expected anything else from them, they're the best! Word got to my siblings on my decision and they all chipped in together to buy me my knives to show their support as well. They were Henckel knives that I'd walk by in Sur la Table all the time and just pine for. Can you say #Blessed ? -ALARM- I struggled underneath the covers trying to find my way out. When I finally emerged I turned the blaring alarm off, and made my way to the bathroom. I did my business and splashed some cold water on my face to wake me up a little bit more. "Alexa, play THE LIST!" I smiled turning to my reflection in the mirror. C'est La Vie began playing and I danced around my apartment probably looking like an idiot. Though what did I care I lived alone. "Say you will say you won't, say you'll do what I don't!" I continued singing probably off-key, dancing my way into the kitchen to make breakfast. Opening the fridge I examined the miriad of leftovers populating the shelves. First things first, i popped open a monster energy. I shook the caffiene through as I took the first sip. "C'est la vie!" I smiled hitting it right on time. -Knock knock- I skipped over to the door and looked through the peep hole. I unlocked the door welcoming inside my two best friends James and Rebecca. James walked in also holding the hand of his son. We usually walk to school together, but today they were early. "Healthy breakfast you got there." James laughed pointing to my energy drink. "It's just a warm up. I was going to have a real breakfast." "That and maybe put on some pants there." Rebecca said. "I'm wearing shorts! I wouldn't have answered the door pants-less I'm not a heathen Rebecca." Though I could see how I did look pantless with my big t-shirt covering my shorts. "Anyway, what're you guys doin here so early. We don't leave for another like..half hour." "I was actually going to ask if I could use your shower cause they were doin some stuff over at my building and the waters out.." Rebecca said pushing her index fingers together. "Well let me go first. And since I'm doing you this favor you make us breakfast then!" "Okay deal. See James look at how nice our friend Elizabeth is. That's why she's my best friend not you" "I can't help that my roommates had the bathrooms occupied when you came over. Get cookin there." I heard Rebecca rummaging through my cabinets for pans while I walked over to the bathroom to take a shower. The good thing about having friends in culinary school is that you can always rely on someone to cook. When I came out the cloud of steam flowed into the apartment. "Jeez you must take some hot showers." Rebecca said plating an omlette. I shrugged my shoulders, still drying my hair. "Okay I did my part. SHOWER!" She picked up her bag and practically ran to the shower. I sat down with James and his son, eating the omlette with what looked to be cut up portions of leftovers. I washed up the dishes and made final checks before we all made our way out of my place. I slinged my bag over my shoulder and picked up my knife kit on our way out the door. We talked about random things on our way to school, but not before making a quick stop for James. He dropped his son off at day-care which also was conveniently close to the school. "I really don't know how you do the whole single dad thing." Rebecca said. "What do you mean?" He said while replying to texts. "I mean I can barely take care of myself let alone another person, and ALONE." "Well he's not alone Becks. He's got us." I smiled. "Aha thanks Liz. But yeah I've got help but I just wanna do as much on my own as I can without burdening anyone else." "You're one of the strongest people I know James." Rebecca said before taking the last sip of her coffee. We made our way onto campus before parting ways to head to our classes. "Meet for lunch!" Rebecca shouted. Both James and I gave her the thumbs up. i walked into my first class of the day which was baking. I learned a lot of my baking knowledge from not only my mom but also my aunt Camryn. Along with her wedding planning business she has her own baking business on the side. She wasn't always my nicest teacher to me, but I did learn a lot. I buttoned up my chef's jacket and sat down in the lecture hall to watch a demonstration. I paid attention as best I could taking whatever notes I felt would help me the most later. This isn't like a typical lecture with slides, it's literally a projection of someone making a dish. When it was finished the class went into the test kitchen to see if we could recreate it. I did fairly well on my recreation but just a few plating issues kept me from a perfect score. Still an A none the less with room for improvement. I checked the clock. I walked over to the cafeteria where Rebecca was already there waiting with her second coffee of the day. Though what can I expect from someone that considers themself a sommelier of coffee. "How was baking class?" Rebecca asked a little shakily. I'm assuming it's from all the caffiene she's had in such a short amount of time. "I made the pastry fine, but I just had plating issues. My coulis wasn't as thick as I wanted and it started streaking on the plate. So I got docked points, but still an A." I shrugged trying not to think about it too much. "Well that's good." "What's good?" James asked walking over to us carrying a tray. "Liz got an A in baking today, but she's mad about her coulis." "Oh bummer. Cookie?" He offered. I smirked taking it. "Ha nothing a cookie couldn't solve." "Okay rude you didn't offer me one." "Excuse me where are my manners, Rebecca would you also like a cookie?" "Hold the sarcasm with that one." Rebecca said reaching over. "But yes I would." I took a bite laughing at their exchange. "*SPITS JAMES!" I rubbed a napkin on my tongue. Both of them looking at me crazy. "THESE ARE RAISIN!" "...and?" James said slowly taking a bite for himself. "WHO LIKES OATMEAL RAISIN COOKIES!?" I fumed passing it back to him. Rebecca's eyes grew wide. "You would like raisins!" Rebecca huffed. "C'mon Elizabeth, let's get real food." We stuck our tongues out while James laughed to himself. Moving through the lunch line, Rebecca and I grabbed food onto our trays to forget the trauma of the raisin trying to be a chocolate chip. What sick bastard decided cookies needed raisins?! I settled on a chicken sandwich with polenta fries, while Rebecca got a skirt steak salad with chipotle dressing. Perks of going to a culinary school is you get food normally not thought of in regular college. "I can't believe you did that to me. I THOUGHT WE WERE FRIENDS!" I took a hard bite into my sandwich. He just shrugged his shoulders before taking another bite of that monstrosity of a dessert. When we finished lunch it was time for me to head to my cooking basics class. The class I'm probably best at. Like my baking class we start off watching a demo of a dish being made and then are asked to recreate. I like this one in particular cause we get to eat whatever we make. I'm not so much a sweet tooth person so that's why this one takes rank over desserts. Also this way I usually don't have to make dinner. We were making pan roasted chicken, braised swiss chard, roasted parsnips, and carmelized cipollini onions. It's a dish I could make in my sleep. When I got into the kitchen it was time for business. I didn't hear anyone, I wasn't talking, the only thing I was doing was cooking. I finished somewhere in the middle of the class, and brought my dish up to be judged. My professor cut into my chicken and I hoped to fuck it wasn't raw. He picked the piece up on the fork and I saw BOOM right on the money. He took bits from around the plate onto a single bite. "Very good Elizabeth. Another good days work. You can enjoy your dish if you want or leave it to another student." FUCK THAT. I brought my plate back to my station and started eating. I did the dishes at my station when I got done, and packed up my knives. James and Rebecca were waiting outside my class as we were all going to work right afterwards. James is a waiter at the restaurant, and Rebecca works the bar. They're both a little older than I am, and I'm only twenty. I met them both pretty randomly when sitting alone in the cafeteria. Rebecca sat down at my table and just introduced herself to me. Complete opposite of my own personality, and then right after James did the same. I guess they could tell I was new or something and needed friends. Since then we've all just hung out, and they even helped me get the job at the restaurant. "Looked good whatever you were eating." Rebecca said. "Oh so good. I love having a class where you eat what you make." "Aha I remember those classes. Enjoy them now." James warned. "Aw James don't scare her!" Rebecca laughed. "I'm just sayin! I can't eat my accounting homework." Way to bring down my mood James. "Well whatever, let's get to work." We walked off campus and rode the bus. I made it to my station of unchopped vegetables and got right into it. "Hey Elizabeth." Our head chef greeted me. "Hi!" I smiled looking up from my pile of carrots. "I'm also gonna need you to break down those romaine hearts. We got tableside Caesars going tonight." "Ooh fun. Are you guys making the dressing from scratch?" "Yeah actually, you ever done it?" He asked inspecting the various stations. "Just at home, it was okay." "Aha hard to believe this is your first year at culinary." What can I say? Humble brag. "Well I'll leave you to get back to work." "Alright, bye chef!" I don't even think I know our head chef's real name. I just call him chef. I set my knife down for a minute to shake the feeling back into my hands. The pile of carrots slowly began to dwindle down, so I shifted my focus to the romaine hearts. After washing and spinning them I broke them down for salad. I brought the bowls to the trolleys for the table side service. I stood at the front of the kitchen just imagining what it'd be like. "Alright on order! Four covers!" I said pretending to read a ticket. I heard laughs behind me and immediately I turned around shook. A few of the line cooks had seen me. "Aw..she's playing pretend." One of them said walking past me. "How cute..thinks she's an actual chef." Another chef smirked attempting to pinch my cheek. I pulled my face away, trying to be as stone face as possible as they walked by. Inside I was dying. I was so embarrassed. I ran back into the walk-in fridge to cool off. I took a few deep breaths to collect myself. The head chef walked in, and jumped back surprised to see me in there. "Whoa! I didn't expect to see anyone in here." "Oh..um I was just..never mind I don't know what I was doing." "You okay?" He asked looking me in the eyes. "Yeah yeah just..nothing." I tried to walk past him back into the kitchen. He held his arm out blocking my way. "Hey tell me what's wrong." He leaned up against the door. "No one can hear what we're talking about it's okay. What you say will be between us, and I can tell you're a little rattled about something." "*sigh well..alright. I was at the front of the pass with no one in the kitchen and I kinda like pretended I was calling out orders..y'know like a real head chef. Then I guess some of the line cooks saw me and kinda..made fun of me for pretending." "Mm I see. So lemme ask you something. What's your goal from all this?" "What? To be a head chef." "So what if you imagine yourself in that role and some people see? You can see yourself doing that, and that's what matters. Those chefs are probably just content working the line and never getting better. They probably stopped learning a long time ago. You're dreaming bigger. You've got something Elizabeth and I'm not just saying that." I nodded my head. "Now walk back in there like you belong in there." He pointed me back into the kitchen. I pulled my shoulders back and walked confidently back in. I found the chefs that passed by me. They smirked at me again, mocking the motions I was doing earlier. "I will be a head chef one day, and a damn good one. So FUCK YOU!" The head chef covered his mouth laughing as I returned to my station. I must've said it pretty loud since I could hear both James and Rebecca laughing their ass off. Good thing we hadn't opened for dinner yet!

Learn why we decorate trees, swap cookies and hide pickles and elves, among other traditions.
From its Puritan roots to complaints of rampant commercialism (“What is it you want?” Charlie Brown asks Lucy in A Charlie Brown Christmas. “Real Estate.”), Christmas in America has been filled with traditions, old and new.
According to a Pew Research Center survey, nine in 10 Americans say they celebrate the holiday, and while it’s true that many Christmas traditions date back to 16th-century Germany or even ancient Greek times, others have caught on just in modern times.
Here’s a look at 25 ways Americans have celebrated the Christmas season, from singing songs and reciting poems to decorating trees and swapping cookies to guzzling eggnog and dressing up in ugly sweaters.
Christmas Trees - Decorated trees date back to Germany in the Middle Ages, with German and other European settlers popularizing Christmas trees in America by the early 19th century. A New York woodsman named Mark Carr is credited with opening the first U.S. Christmas tree lot in 1851. A 2019 survey by the American Christmas Tree Association, predicted that 77 percent of U.S. households would display a Christmas tree in their home. Among those trees on display, an estimated 81 percent were artificial and 19 percent were real.
The Rockettes perform their annual Christmas show at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.
The Rockettes - Since 1925, first known as the Missouri Rockets, this iconic dance troupe has been kicking up its heels, officially becoming the Radio City Music Hall Rockettes in 1934. From performing at movie openings to entertaining troops to making TV appearances, they’re perhaps best-known for their annual Christmas Spectacular.
Charlie Brown's tree in "A Charlie Brown Christmas."
A Charlie Brown Christmas - Decades later, it may be hard to imagine that this beloved TV special inspired by Charles Schulz’s Peanuts comic strip was first rejected by CBS executives. But when it finally aired on December 9, 1965, almost half of all U.S. TV sets were tuned to the broadcast, and the show went on to win an Emmy, a Peabody, an enduring following and even a trend of “Charlie Brown” Christmas trees. “I never thought it was such a bad little tree,” Linus says in the sprecial. “It's not bad at all, really. Maybe it just needs a little love.”
The Christmas pickle is designed to be hard to find.
Christmas Pickles - If there’s a pickle among your snowman, angel and reindeer ornaments, you’re likely taking part in the American tradition of hiding the green ornament on the tree, so that the first child to find it wins a gift, or gets to open the first present Christmas morning. The practice’s origins are a bit murky (or should that be briny?), but, according to Atlas Obscura, it’s likely it grew from a Woolworths marketing gimmick from the late 1800s, when the retailer received imported German ornaments shaped like a pickle and needed a sales pitch.
Elf on the Shelf requires nightly relocation.
Elf on the Shelf - Love it or loathe it, since 2005, moms and dads have either joyously or begrudgingly been hiding a toy elf each night from Thanksgiving to Christmas. More than 13 million elves have been “adopted” since 2005 when Carol Aebersold and her daughter, Chanda Bell, published the book Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition that comes with the toy. Social media has even inspired some parents to set up elaborate scenarios for their elves—as in: He TP’d the tree! She filled the sink with marshmallows!
Yule logs date back to ancient winter solstice.
Yule Log - Yule logs were part of ancient winter solstice celebrations, but it was Americans who turned the wood burning into must-see TV. Back in 1966, WPIX-TV in New York City aired a continuous 17-second loop of a fireplace for three hours along with holiday music. That led to an eventual better production and nearly 20 years of annual viewing. Today, you can view the yule log on demand, on YouTube and more.
Advent calendars count down the days.
Advent Calendars - Early versions of this tradition, started in Germany in 1903 by publisher Gerhard Land, offered a way for children to count down to Christmas by opening one “door” or “window” a day to reveal a Bible passage, poem or small gift. Since gaining mass popularity by 1920, the calendars have evolved to secular calendars that include daily gifts from mini bottles of wine to nail polish to chocolates to action figures.
Edible gingerbread house.
Gingerbread Houses - Although Queen Elizabeth I gets credit for the early decorating of gingerbread cookies, once again, it’s the Germans who lay claim to starting the gingerbread house tradition. And when the German Brothers Grimm wrote “Hansel and Gretel” a new holiday tradition was born. Today, the edible decorations are available in a slew of pre-packed kits.
In "The Nutcracker," Clara falls for a nutcracker who comes to life.
The Nutcracker - For many, the holiday season is not complete without a trip to watch this ballet. With music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and originally choreographed by Marius Petipa, the romantic tale of the young Clara’s Christmas Eve premiered Dec. 18, 1892, in St. Petersburg, Russia. It was performed for the first time outside of Russia in 1934 in England, and made its way to the United States in 1944 when it was performed by the San Francisco Ballet. It became a must-see event in America in the 1960s, as performances spread across the nation.
The uglier the better.
Ugly Christmas Sweaters - You can blame our neighbors to the north for this silly, ironic tradition that really gained steam in the 1980s. According to the Ugly Christmas Sweater Party Book, the sweaters became a party trend in Vancouver, Canada in 2001. And the trend is seemingly here to stay. According to Fox Business, the ugly sweater industry is a multi-million business, with websites such as Tipsy Elves, retailers including Macy’s, Kohl’s and Target, and even food chains jumping on the ugly bandwagon.
Leaving something for Santa.
Cookies and milk for Santa - While leaving treats for Santa and his reindeer dates back to ancient Norse mythology, Americans began to sweeten up to the tradition during the Great Depression in the 1930s, as a sign of showing gratitude during a time of struggle.
Candy canes date back to the 17th century.
Candy Canes - Whether devoured as a treat or hung on the tree as decoration, candy canes are the No. 1-selling non-chocolate candy during December, and date back to 1670 Germany. The red and white peppermint sticks arrived stateside in 1847, when a German-Swedish immigrant in Wooster, Ohio placed them on a tree. By the 1950s, an automated candy cane-making machine was invented, cementing their mass appeal.
American colonist devised some of the first eggnog recipes.
Boozy Eggnog - Eggs, milk, sugar, rum—nothing makes the holidays happier more quickly than a glass of spiked eggnog. Although the yuletide cocktail stems from posset, a drink made with hot curdled milk and ale or wine from medieval England, American colonists get credit for making it popular and adding rum. Even George Washington had a special recipe.
Door Wreaths - Wreaths have been around since the ancient Greek and Roman times, but the evergreen Christmas wreath, often adorned with boughs of holly, eventually took on Christian meaning, with the circular shape representing eternal life and the holly leaves and berries symbolic of Christ’s crown of thorns and blood, according to the New York Times. Today’s wreaths, which come in all varieties, from flowers and fruit to glass balls and ribbon to artificial and themed, are most often seen as a secular winter tradition.
A Christmas card from the 1800s.
Sending Christmas Cards - The first official Christmas card debuted in 1843 England with the simple message, “A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to You.” The idea of a mailed winter holiday greeting gradually caught on in both Britain and the U.S., with the Kansas City-based Hall Brothers (now Hallmark) creating a folded card sold with an envelope in 1915. Today, according to the Greeting Card Association, more than 1.6 billion holiday cards are sold annually.
"It's a Wonderful Life" debuted in 1946.
It’s a Wonderful Life - Frank Capra’s classic Christmas film debuted in 1946, with Jimmy Stewart playing George Bailey, a suicidal man who is shown what life would be like without him by an angel. But before becoming an annual TV-viewing tradition, the movie was a bit of a flop at the box office when it premiered, although it did receive five Oscar nominations (but no wins). A lapsed copyright in the 1970s allowed TV stations to air the movie for free. It has aired exclusively on NBC and USA since 1994.
Christmas Light Technology (TV-PG; 1:53)
Christmas Lights - Thomas Edison may be famous for the light bulb, but it was his partner and friend, Edward Hibberd Johnson, who had the bright idea of stringing bulbs around a Christmas tree in New York in 1882. By 1914, the lights were being mass produced and now some 150 million sets of lights are sold in the U.S. each year.
Santa has helped stores sell since at least 1890.
Department store Santa - Lining up at the mall to snap a photo of the kids on Santa’s lap may seem like a modern Christmas tradition, but it dates back to 1890, when James Edgar of Brockton, Massachusetts had a Santa suit made for him and dressed as the jolly fellow at his dry goods store. The gimmick caught on and a year later Santas could be found in many stores. While many point to Edgar as the original store Santa, Macy’s in New York claims it has been hosting Santa since 1862.
Fruit cake can be eaten—or tossed.
Making Fun of Fruitcake - A favorite of the Brits (both Princess Diana and Kate Middleton served it at their weddings), fruitcake—that much-maligned mix of dried fruit, nuts and brandy—has been the subject of long-running American holiday jokes. Truman Capote wrote a short story about “fruitcake weather” in 1956, the small town of Manitou Springs, Colorado holds an annual Fruitcake Toss Day on January 3, and the dessert has become fodder for many a comedian. For example, in 1985 Johnny Carson cracked, “The worst Christmas gift is fruitcake. There is only one fruitcake in the entire world, and people keep sending it to each other.”
Cookie swaps help add variety.
Cookie Swaps - For more than 100 years, Americans have spent time baking up a storm to exchange cookies at one of these events where participants bring a dozen of their favorite cookies, then guests trade and head home with an array of goodies. In her book, The Cookie Party Cookbook, Robin Olson writes that she found references to “cookie parties” dating back to the late 1800s, and that they began to be called “cookie exchanges” by the 1930s, and “cookie swaps” in the ’50s. "Historically, cookie exchange parties have been a ladies-only event. Exchanges were hosted by friends, relatives, neighbors, social groups, clubs, office co-workers, teams, schools and churches," she writes. Now, they often include children and men and are frequently used as fund-raisers.
Old St. Nick.
A Visit from Saint Nicholas - Best known as The Night Before Christmas, the reading of this classic by poet Clement Moore is an American holiday tradition. Believed to have been written on Christmas Eve of 1822, the New Yorker is said to have been inspired by his sleigh ride home. According to the U.S. Library of Congress, Clement, a professor at the General Theological Seminary in Manhattan, was “embarrassed by the work, which was made public without his knowledge in December 1823. Moore did not publish it under his name until 1844.”
Luminarias decorate an entranceway.
Luminarias - Simple, folded brown bags filled with sand and lit by votive candles are particularly popular in the Southwest. Dating back more than 300 years, they line sidewalks and churches in places such as Albuquerque and Santa Fe, N.M., Phoenix, where the annual Las Noches de las Luminarias at the Desert Botanical Garden features more than 8,000 luminaria bags, and the Fiesta de las Luminarias along the River Walk in San Antonio, where visitors can stroll along 2,000 bags over nine nights.
The Christian 12 days of Christmas actually take place December 25 to January 6.
Twelve Days of Christmas - Even though most hear the song between Thanksgiving and Christmas Day, the Christian 12 days of Christmas, which span the birth of Jesus and the visit of the Magi, actually take place December 25 to January 6. The earliest version of the poem-turned-song is thought to have been published in Mirth With-out Mischief, a children’s book from 1780, with the modern version credited to English composer Frederic Austin who set the poem to music. Each year the PNC Christmas Price Index totals up the total cost of the 12 gifts named in the song based on current markets. For 2019, everything from a partridge in a pear tree to 12 drummers drumming would run up a bill of $38,993.59.
Poinsettias - America’s Christmas flower, these plants native to Central America were brought to the United States (and given their name) by the country’s first U.S. ambassador to Mexico, botanist Joel Roberts Poinsett, in the 1820s. It was a California horticulturist named Paul Ecke who brought the traditionally red and green plants to the masses 100 years later. He donated the plants to TV shows, and, according to the Los Angeles Times, the poinsettia became the best-selling potted plant in the nation by 1986.
Salvation Army bell-ringers accept cash—and Apple Pay.
Salvation Army Bell Ringers - Come December, shoppers are likely to see bell-ringers accepting donations in their iconic red kettles. Collecting money for the needy since 1891, the tradition started with San Francisco Salvation Army Capt. Joseph McFee who wanted to raise money to offer a free Christmas dinner to 1,000 of the city’s most destitute. Inspired by a kettle he had seen in England in which people tossed in coins for the poor, he set up his own version, and the idea quickly spread across the country and the world. Today, the Salvation Army helps more than 4.5 million people during the holiday season. Today bell-ringers don’t only accept cash—donations can be made via smart phones.
