sorry if this has been asked but how did you learn anatomy down to a T like you have??? I’m trying to teach myself and I’m feeling very stuck, but your art is a huge inspiration for me

Honestly I still struggle sometimes! But thank you for saying so! I think I am quite privileged that when I do studies they stick quite fast, I tend to remember things well when they’re visual. I think this is true more so now than in the beginning, because now it feels more like filling in a missing jigsaw piece, than…the whole jigsaw. Like oh that's how the wrist bone looks at that angle, I could add a little line to suggest that vs. oh my god what are arms how do they work.

I also just enjoy doing studies, which I think is maybe unusual! My sketchbooks are maybe a third studies from life or photos. I have done thousands! I see a pose I like and I want to draw it. Again, there’s a hump even with studies at the beginning that’s really hard to get over! It’s hard to stick with it when it’s not coming out how it’s supposed to, but the only way to get over it is to keep going tbh. 

I learn most from doing smaller gesture drawings from movies/other in motion things, but I have done my fair share of nudes especially at the beginning. I used to vary between kind of boring nudes and like, dance videos, copying animations, movies etc. Drawing a few frames of a motion is fun and you learn how the body moves.

I also think it's helpful to identify areas that need the most work, and that’s something I still do. For example I keep drawing arms and I know that I’m just making up the muscle at the top, so I will at some point either sit and study, or find photos while I am drawing said arm in picture and do it Right this time. I think using refs is a very good way to improve, like you don’t need to use them every time, but sometimes it’s good to try and make something look correct instead of making it up, and next time hopefully some of that knowledge is retained.

It’s a ref to the tweet that the Mafia Twitter made in 2020 asking who’d you like to have more as your buddy. Obviously I’d pick Paulie. The colors and little lighting bolts are pulled straight off the Hangar13 logo!!!

Made a compilation of my favorite pieces from each month of 2024. I’ll put the template I made in a reblog if anyone wants to use it. Top right of each image lists character and fandom, bottom right is which day of the month I drew it. (which is different to the date it was posted here, in most cases, since this blog runs on a queue that’s usually around a month long)

Ramblings about each month and the year overall have been placed under a cut.

It’s interesting looking back… I didn’t even realize how recent some of this stuff was until I was going through my photos. Like September and October weren’t that long ago, but it feels like it’s been ages since I drew those pieces…

I’d completely forgotten about my brief foray back into dsmp stuff at the start of the year. Sure is wild how many of the creators turned out to be terrible… Honestly, that’s a big part of why I haven’t gotten back into it in earnest at any point - every time I feel like I’m ready to get back into it, some completely insane controversy comes out about another cc and I end up backing off until it’s been long enough that it doesn’t feel insensitive to being up the “character =/= creator” argument again.

Unsurprisingly, Undertale has a big presence throughout the year, along with Deltarune. No matter how much time goes by, I don’t think I’ll ever stop being into it. First ever fandom, you know? Shaped my personality at a formative age, and all that.

I didn’t really do much colored stuff in January, apparently. Guess I was more focused on playing around with negative space that month, given the dsmp drawings. (and the Chara one, which is just me doing that but with color. I actually did drawings like that for a couple Undertale characters, but the Chara one was my favorite so that’s the one that made it in)

In February I drew a whole bunch of Burgerpants. Only grabbed one, since I did some other neat stuff that month too, but there were a whole bunch to pick from. Something about him just really appeals to me. I did some Homestuck that month too, along with a fair bit throughout the rest of the year. It’s really terrible that Homestuck is so good despite the everything about it. I think it’s going to live rent free in my brain until I die.

In March I did a little bit more dsmp, but I’m pretty sure it was basically only that drawing. What can I say, nuke imagery is simply too fun to play with. I was really happy with those Undynes as well. I was experimenting with color a lot that month and honestly I’m still proud of those pieces. I should try doing more stuff like that…

There must have been something in the water in April, because I was just absolutely churning out some of the best digital paintings of my life… that third one especially, with Frisk in the bed of flowers, is just… damn, I need to do more stuff like that.

May was another month where I didn’t do much colored stuff, but I did do some Trigun art. I think that was probably the month I rewatched the original anime and realized how good it is. The Chara drawing was inspired by - you know those old pieces, I think the artist was called Teoft? They did a series of Undertale pieces with various characters as super ominous looking angels. My style doesn’t really carry across vibe as well (at least not with the brush I was using there) but it was fun to play around with and I never get tired of drawing wings.

June is all OC stuff, because that’s the month before Artfight so I was remastering all my old OC refs. Inevitably, I’ll end up doing that again this year, since I’ve changed a bunch of their outfits since then…

July is Artfight month, which I usually put this blog on hiatus during, but I ended up drawing so much stuff that year I didn’t have to. Like not only was it the most prolific I’ve been as far as Artfight attacks go, but I was also doing enough stuff on top of that to have had genuine trouble picking only four pieces to put here… like, again, clearly something in the water.

In August I was playing around with representations of the player in Undertale and Deltarune. Puppet imagery has historically been my go-to for that, but that was around the time I finally played Slay the Princess, so I had hands on the mind too. The eyes were inspired by Murderbot Diaries fanart, because there’s a character in that series who often gets represented that way and I always thought it looked super cool.

I had a really cool piece I was working on September for the Undertale anniversary, but I never ended up finishing it. So instead there’s a bunch of Deltarune stuff. I mean, close enough, right…?

In October we see the first appearances of both Parkciv and ISAT, though my earliest ISAT stuff is actually from late September. All of the Parkciv drawings I’ve posted were done in one day and I haven’t drawn anything for it since. ISAT, on the other hand, is still dominating this blog. When the hyperfixation hits, amirite?

November is entirely ISAT, somewhat unsurprisingly. What can I say, I just really like Loop. And drawing them in dresses is fun.

December, on the other hand, is entirely Undertale! Not that it was the only thing I drew necessarily - I did some ISAT stuff too - but that was the month I started my Undertale AU askblog, so it was occupying an even larger portion of my head than it usually does. Actually, the majority of the art I did last month was for the askblog - I’ve been focusing on it pretty hard. It’s probably the most consistently invested I’ve been in making an au since like… Reverietale.

Overall, I’m really happy with what I’ve made this year. I don’t think I’ve necessarily made any insane strides as an artist or anything - I got slightly better at anatomy and perspective, but nothing crazy - but in a lot of ways I think that’s a mark of how far I’ve come as an artist - that I’ve reached a level where I don’t really feel like there are any big changes to my style as a whole I need to make to keep improving, and instead I’m taking what I already have and refining it. I think over the course of the last year I’ve reached a point where I actually consider my art to be consistently at a professional level.

I think, at some point soon, I’m going to start actually doing commissions for real. I’ve already got most of the pricing stuff figured out…

Well, happy new year! Despite everything… I think I’m looking forward to the future.

I, a very white and somewhat privileged person, am absolutely terrified to draw colored people. Because I don’t know if I’d cross the thin line of tasteful and authentic or racist and stereotypical…

Lol for starters don't refer to us as coloured people. This ain't 1955. Secondly my best advice to you is to use references of actual people of color. I would highly recommend staying away from those white men art station youtuber type artists for tutorials because they get a majority of their techniques and style from main stream video games and comic books, which to put it nicely don't have the best reputation for representing women and poc. tangent over, so yeah references. real life photographs of brown and black people.

pinterest is a site that a lot of current, especially younger artists like to use, but in all honesty it's not a very good source for someone trying to learn the fundamentals. it'll mainly show you 20 something year old ig and twitter models which is okay if you wanna just draw pretty people; but not the best if you wanna like I said learn fundamentals + have a portfolio that's varied. also it's rife with ai shit and stolen art, so yeah would only recommend that as an initial starting point/using it to make your own personal board for your saved images.

stock photo sites are my go to for refs. getty images, istock, alamy, etc. a simple right click save image or screenshot will work to get the images you want for free. of course there will be the watermarks, but they're honestly a very small issue to bypass. as long as they're not opaque and nearly covering the entire subject; you're good. a nice thing about stock photo sites is they usually give you the option to filter the image search results. say for instance you want to draw an elderly asian woman cooking or a young black man painting a picture or an indigenous child playing with dolls. you can look up certain terms you want in the search bar & specify gender, age and ethnicity to narrow down your search to what you want.

another awesome place for references i discovered during college is posespace.com

like with getty images, it gives you the option to filter your searches. they also have their models in clothed or nude shoots in the event that you want to practice some bare bones anatomy.

also also, get your info from artists of color. there's a decent amount of tutorials ive found over the years on here and youtube on coloring skintones, drawing certain hair types, how to avoid caricatures and stereotyping, different facial features, cultural hairstyles. the list goes on. don't be afraid to depict people outside of your race. literally just go about drawing us the same way you would a white person. don't be scared, as long as you remain respectful and make an honest effort to learn; you'll do fine.

A new pair- Safira and Higashi, bottom left of it. I gave talking to them a try, and they seemed familiar somehow nice. Apparently they helped stop the natural disasters of the air continent.

There's also Feysara, the Eevee girl- that's her talking to Auren on the right. She's polite, if a bit quiet at times. I have a feeling you'll like her.

This post has been set to go up at sometime in the afternoon/evening of the 31st, meaning this is some of this year's last hours.

So, I'd like to thank you while I still have time.

Thank you all for everything you've done for me, for being so friendly, for caring as much as you have- I don't think I'd be here without all of you.

Now, for some more fun stuff- I don't have refs or anything but I can at least give a lowdown on the picture.

Chronoconvergence is my current idea for a collective name for my PMD stuff, likely to be replaced once I think of something better, but it stands for now. ...I am still too lazy to update tags though.

As said in the letter, Ephim the Lucario is doing ...whatever that is with Minato (Bulbasaur) on the left, with Safira (Skitty) and Higashi (Wooper) talking with Minami (Grovyle, yes, The Grovyle PMD2) right below.

Taking center stage are Everus (Fraxure) and Spark (Ninetales), my Gates team, with Ephris (Mew) hovering close by alongside Serri (Celebi, again, yes, The Celebi PMD2). also nearby is Feysara standing far off to the right

Lastly, is one that might require a bit of explanation- Auren (Dusknoir, you know the drill) talking with... Feysara, the Eevee mentioned in the letter. Just one small problem. Feysara is someone else's name.

Well, Feys (as I've effectively renamed her) is the protagonist of the fic I've been trying to write for a while now called An Empty Reflection which is also meant to serve as the opening act to a grander story called New Future's Dawn. Her story is yet to be told, but I hope to do so soon!

I want to promise when my next big thing or whatever will be but really, I'm probably gonna end up liveblogging Vivid/Stasis Chapter 5 for a bit so I might be occupied with that. As this goes up, I'm probably just finishing up what is effectively meant to be me re-familiarizing myself with the game as a whole.

But just know that writing is not abandoned, and art is not abandoned, both just planned to be pushed to the side as I write this. I'm probably at least thinking of writing by the time you're reading this, so not all hope is lost.

And as a last note... This combination of characters being alive and such is not canon, even if we all (or at least I) wished otherwise. Well, Happy New Year. It's been a hell of a ride so far and I can only hope it gets better from here.

This is Selena Harris, she’s a former member of the army (Went by Iris, MWD Handler) and is currently part of Shadow Company (10-13). She’s 24 years old (4/12/2000, M/D/Y). She speaks English and Spanish (vaguely understands telgu as her mother is Indian). She had a mostly normal childhood until her father literally got hit by a car in front of her when she was 14 and dying, then fell in with the wrong group of people and ended up having no purpose. Ended up joining the U.S. Army at 18 for the sake of it, got her life in order and joined Shadow Company at 23 (she she’s a fairly new arrival).

She’s incredibly touch aversive and one of her habits is that when some misbehaves around her, her brain immediately goes into ‘bad dog’ type mode and scolds people like they’re a naughty dog (it’s engrained in her from her MWD days and the fact their family used to volunteer at an animal shelter, they still do just less nowadays).

So I came from your insta and saw that you improved quite a lot over two years. I’m in an art rut right now and was wondering your tactics for learning to draw different positions and poses? And fabric? I’m just curious since you don’t have speed draws on YT.

in the past two years, i think what's helped me improve the most is learning the balance of keeping consistency without taking myself too seriously. i find that when i'm in a rut or i feel like i've stagnated, it's bc i'm too in my head and i'm forgetting to have fun. bc yes, technical skill is good to acquire, but creativity is, in my opinion, more important of a priority because that's where the art comes from. the technical skill is just the tool to help the art get made, so hone it, but don't treat it like it's everything. it's no good being able to draw a bunch of cool stuff if you don't have the spoons to draw any of it or if you're so burned out, you can't even come up with ideas.

on the more technical side though, for me, study and practice time are when i focus on repetition so i can build muscle memory. if i'm studying from references (and not feeling lazy lol) i'll draw each ref at least 2 or 3 times to get those reps in, drawing fast and sketchy, just doing as many as i can. this really helps with things you'll draw over and over again like clothing folds. my hand will start to just have a better intuitive sense for the shapes instead of agonizing over each one cuz i've drawn it enough times. when i'm sketching, it helps me to fall back on that muscle memory so i can put more focus to other aspects of whatever it is i'm drawing.

it's about finding a balance really.. if i study too much, i never actually implement the things i learn but if i study too little, then my work stagnates and all looks the same. finding that balance for yourself will go alone way! when i'm in an art block, what i need just really goes back to remembering to enjoy the process and finding that spark again. if i'm not enjoying my art, then i gotta switch something up.

here are some other things i like to do for practice:

redraw screenshots/stills from my fav shows or manga (good way to study poses, anatomy, and scene composition w/o it feeling too serious.)

or pick a show/movie/comic and choose a character i like. draw them 3-5 times, copying the art style to a T then draw them again in my own style to see what elements i wanna take away from it. (again, a good way to study without Studying. i end up leaving the experience with new staples for my art style)

find fashion photo references and draw my ocs in the outfits.

switch up what i'm drawing with. like if i'm mostly draw in pencil, switch to only pen. if i'm doing digital, i put my go-to brushes in a new folder, don't touch them, then sketch with a brush i never reach for. just change one little thing and see how it affects the process. usually i discover something new.

i wrote a list of things i like to draw on the front page of my sketchbook (just stream of consciousness, wrote down like 100 things i like to draw. ex: oranges, apples, snails, leaves.) and when i don't know what to draw, i close my eyes and point to something then draw whatever i comes up.

Back when the Legend of Korra finale first aired, I was a little baby gay and had a different tumblr which I believe I deleted. On said tumblr, I think I mentioned vaguely that I had an idea for fankids for them

It's been 9 years since I deleted that tumblr. It's going to be 10 years since the finale this December. The release of the (underwhelming) live action Last Airbender has brought me back to a show that truly changed my life, and made me feel seen as a queer, mixed native kid (I'm a quarter, my grandpa was full)

So. Here's a little post about those ocs, who I found in my old seventh grade french notes (I never paid attention in that class lmao)

Anyways!y Korrasami kids. Let's go over them

Hiroto Sato (Ref age 16)

So I imagine that once their lives were stable, that they'd want to have a baby. Asami would carry in my mind, just because Korra would be all worried about how her body would handle it after the poisoning thing. However, their plans go, twisted. Cause they have twins

Their first born is their son, named after Hiroshi Sato, though Asami didn't want to directly name him after her father because her feelings would be still complicated. So, Hiroto. He goes by Hiro, mostly, and he's a fire bender

His eyes are a dark brown/grey, and he keeps his hair at a sort of medium length? It curls slightly around his ears, and he'd need glasses starting at age 14. He likes warm, comfy clothes

Hiro isn't very physically, well, talented. He's clumsy, trips over his own feet sometimes, the kind of person who's thinking so hard he smacks into polls and apologizes to them. He'd nervously chew on the skin of his thumb as he works. Hiro's an awkward guy, not great at conversation. He's always had a knack for art, and wants to become a city planner. He's not a great bender, but he does like helping out in the kitchen

Yasuko Sato (Ref age 16)

Their only daughter and youngest bio child, it's younger twin Yasuko! Korra chose her name. She knows how much Asami's mom meant to her, and honestly, the baby looked a lot like the old photos of Yasuko. As much as a baby can, at least. Like her brother, she's a fire bender

She's nearly a carbon copy of Asami. Green eyes, wavy black hair, though she smiles a little crooked. She keeps her hair up in a high pony, and even though she needs glasses like her brother, she rarely wears them. She forgets them more often then not, and just takes his to read momentarily. She's, like, "sleeves? Never heard of them"

Yasuko showed real promise in fire bending when Korra first started teaching her, so she decided to get both twins a proper teacher. Yasuko wanted to be a hero like her Moma, and grew up wanting to help people. Her goal is to be a fire fighter! She's the funny friend, always makes others smile, a jokester

Kova Sato (Ref age 19)

So, the next three are all adopted. There was a disaster type happening in the furthest parts of the Northern Water Tribe, and Korra went to help in the aftermath. After helping with search and rescue efforts, she goes to visit the injured to sort of, give them hope

That's where she meets Kova. He's 9 at the time, yet he was working hard to use his water bending to help heal alongside the elder women. She talks to him while handing out some food shipped in from Republic City, and finds out he lost his parents, and has been looking after his younger brother

Long story short, both boys return to the city with her, and Asami ends up understanding why her wife couldn't leave them behind

Kova is a big guy. He's mixed water tribe earth nation, so while he's got dark skin, his eyes are a dark green, and his hair is messy, dark brown. Quiet guy, but tall for his age. Real gentle, there's a reason he has an affinity for healing. He's got little sun freckles too!

He's great with words. He's a blooming poet, writing the stories people tell him during healing sessions. Incredibly kind, loves the idea of memories making someone immortal. The first poems he writes are of his birth parents, and the second? Of his mom's, and his siblings.

Haoyu Sato (Ref age 12)

He's Kova's younger brother, and was only 2 when Korra took them in and brought them to Republic City.

Haoyu is just paler than his older brother, with darker, messier hair, and blue eyes. His smile is bright, pure joy and energy. He's an endless ball of energy, and reminds his mom's and grandparents of a young Korra; he knows he's hot shit. He's an earth bender, starting at age 6

He's obsessed with pro bending. But, he doesn't dream of being an athlete, but an announcer. Reading is tough for him, and he struggles a bit in school, but when he comes home each day, he's surrounded by love, and care. Asami is always happy to sit with him and help him make sense of his school work, gentle, kind, and patient

I imagine he'd wear someone like a hoodie and soft puffy pants, the kind that end above the ankle.

Gyaltsen Sato (Ref age 5)

The youngest, and again, not exactly a planned adoption. His mother was a newer air acolyte, and she didn't make it through the birth. Tenzin asked Korra and Asami to look after baby Gyaltsen away from the busy temple until someone could take him in, but, the mom's got attached

Just barely darker than Asami and the twins, Gyaltsen has the lightest hair in the family, and the darkest eyes. He's an airbender who shows extreme potential, and is one of Jinora's most promising young students

He's got this spark for life. Everything is so cool to him, so amazing, it's rare for him to be disappointed by something. He feels things strongly, and his Moma Korra sits with him to meditate and talk about his big feelings

He's still very young and growing up, so he's got time to become himself

Evie is energetic, enthusiastic, & friendly. Her curiosity & imaginative nature makes her eager to experience & try out new things & share them with her friends. She is always up for an adventure often dragging her friends along for a fun ride! She tends to get easily distracted (which is probably why she has unfinished projects & either forgets about it or promises to finish it later. p.s. she probably never gets back to it lol ) She's willing to break the rules in order to gain an advantage or to keep her friends safe.

Some extra info on Evie

Her favorite color is blue.

Favorite sweets are Chocolate Frogs & Sugar Quills. Least fav are Bertie Botts.

She's a decent photographer, snapping pics of mostly her friends & nature. She either gives them to Lottie for her art or puts them in her photo album.

Loves creatures very much! Can't choose between unicorns or dragons as her most fav. When in CoMC class, she likes to talk to the creatures affectionately.

She sometimes carries a small bag filled with owl treats for her pet Barn Owl companion, Eglantine.

If she could, she would bring Pancake, her pet corgi bestie, along to Hogwarts with her. She often misses her floofy baby. :')

She has a stuffed dragon named Blaze which she keeps in her dorm. Acts as a sense of comfort to her.

yo. i’m grace.

i’m an adult ace lesbian.

not placing my exact age in this post because i know i’ll forget to update it but it’s on my blog description.

my gender is also “lesbian” but i don’t feel like explaining that every single time so i’m also a woman because it’s close enough.

i use she/her/they pronouns. which means i prefer she/her most of the time but i’m not averse to the occasional “they”

i’m not glued to particular fandoms. i tag every post/reblog about the media with said media. however, i’m a big fan of demon slayer/kimetsu no yaiba, jojo’s bizarre adventure, and pokemon, so those will pop up frequently. i also read warrior cats when i was a kid so i’m haunted by that curse, too. also tagged accordingly.

i also love music. like a LOT. personally, the bands/artists that i’m big on are: Medusa, Crawlers, Mothica, Xana, and VIAL as the big ones that come to mind

this blog is my main and is accordingly a mess of things. art, ocs, poetry, fangirling, whatever. i do have a handful of sideblogs.

@gs-artchive is technically my art sideblog. i forget about it a lot because i mostly do my own oc art for my personal project or my sona and that usually goes here first haha. so that’s mostly where i reblog/store my art or post my fandom-related art or edits

I've been a long time follower of yours (maybe like 3+ years? I don't really know it's been a while!) and I just want to say how beautiful your art is!

It's all so full of soul and expression and it's so so so good to look at !!!

I want to ask, as an up and coming artist myself, how you draw animals so well? Any tips that can make drawing them easier or smth like that? My focus is gonna be on anthros but any tips I'll take if you're willing to share haha

second, it's mostly the unfortunate thing of "i've been drawing these pieces for like eight years now", though one thing that i really sort of focused on was shapes and silhouettes. circles and stuff that you kind of shave or build off. also refs. this can also apply to anthros/humans but imo that's usually harder. then again i'm better with animals than humans so w/e

sorry i don't have anything Amazing to suggest, outside of also like. trace photos lmao. you can trace them/outline said shapes to understand them better, then try to recreate it beside it also i focused on learning skulls/teeth for different animals because they're pretty different!
