A frustrating development with the growing lack of reading comprehension I've personally noticed is an emerging fervor of insisting things aren't canon unless they are explicitly stated beyond all reasonable doubt.

I can not emphasize enough how harmful a mindset this is to have. Yes, it's wonderful to have characters outright say "I'm trans," but to deny a character's identity for not saying that is dangerous.

Plenty of real people prefer not to use specific labels. Historically, people didn't have our modern terms or modes of expression. Many modern cultures don't use these terms, either, and plenty of people within those that do can't safely openly identify.

If the only representation you accept as canon is within modern (and let's be honest, wealthy white able-bodied American) standards, then you are denying yourself and others a huge amount of representation and seriously limiting the media around you.

i hate seeing shit about shelby’s abuse and people calling it the “wilbur and shelby situation” and then other people saying “it’s not the wilbur and shelby situation it’s the shelby situation with wilbur allegations” like babes you are so fucking close. YOU SRE RIGHT THERE

It’s not the wilbur allegations, wilbur wasn’t mentioned or involved whatsoever! Let shelby heal and move on. it’s shubbles situation, nothing more, nothing less. sure there’s things that line up , but that doesn’t fucking matter unless wilbur comes out and admits it, or shelby actively says it was wilbur.

innocent until proven guilty and believe all victims are two things that can coexist and there is little to no nuance on tiktok where conversations like the ones described above are being had.

i also saw someone on here say something along the lines of “good people can do shitty things, good people can be bad in a relationship, good people can be the bad in a relationship ” and i agree, but that is not a conversation many are willing to have, they will jump straight to conclusions and make a woman’s story of abuse about a man.

edit (2/27/24) he posted an 'apology' on twitter, I don't know how I feel about it but he did it. Wilbur abused shelby while they were in a relationship together. He is guilty of what he was speculated of. official ruling imo: fuck that guy

Watching the election results come in feels a lot like watching a suicide bomber run onto a fully packed subway car and hoping that the other people there will help you get the guy off the car and then watching in horror as they all say in unison "actually, I think it would be good if he did go in, because then I can have a subway car to myself" without realizing that 58 bombs were also planted in that car. And then bystanders who previously were saying "well actually, one single person in that car is a murderer, but I also dont like the bomber, so i dont want to help either" then going "how could the suicide bomber possibly get on the subway car?!?!"

The new 20+ second long ads with really glitchy skip buttons were bad enough, but today I paused a video and it fucking pulled up a sidebar next to the paused video to show me a Lexus ad. A la fucking hulu. Can we have no peace? Can I not PAUSE THE FUCKING VIDEO without being bombarded with ads on anything now? Is there no reprieve??!?!?
