My Hero Academia - How NOT to do an Open Ending
In 2022, the American animated series Amphibia ended with an open ending that left all of it's ships up in the air, and the question of where the main characters would go from there up to the reader.
That might be a rather weird way to open an essay about how My Hero Academia failed, but the reason I do so, is to illustrate a point.
Namely that there is a way to do what Hori tried to do with MHA right.
Amphibia ending has the main human trio of that series reuinte after a long timeskip, with all 3 of them having found their passion in life and built careers for themselves, and while there are some suggestions that Sasha and Anne are a bit closer than what might be apparant on screen, it ultimately left the situation of their romantic relationship at this point, and from there on, up in the air withouth confirming or denying anything, beyond the fact that they for whatever reason drifted apart in highschool, but have come back together again at this point in time.
It left you with enough pieces to figure out the specifics, and how you can understand how things got from one point to another, while still giving all the characters a satisfying payoff, continued the shows themes, had no real plot holes, and wheter you ship any of the characters in question or not, it didnt ultimately matter for the quality of the ending.
The fun part about an open ending is that there is room to speculate, so long as it manages to balance all of the above.
A story does not HAVE to end on the main characters hooking up. it does not have to end with tying every single character up in a relationship and showcasing the beginning of the next generation. It does not have to have a definite ending that gives all the answers to be good.
That is one way to end a story, but it's not the only one.
There certainly are stories that NEED to end like that to be good, stories with a greater mystery, or revenge tales, or who's entire story was about one, specific romantic relationship are shit endings if they ultimately end on an open ending withouth answers.
within the context of MHA, Hori managed to weave this balance very well with it's villains.
The story of the Todoroki family in particular has all the definite endings, and tells us where all the players ends up... but it also leaves the possibility, and question of wheter or not dabi ultimately managed to make peace with his family or not up in the air.
This is a good, satisfying, tragic ending.
Spinner and compress both end up in jail for the rest of their lives, but Spinner resolves to write a book, that for better or worse will tell the league's version of the story. It's not AS good an ending as the above, but it still works just fine.
Clearly Hori CAN write a good open ending that still gives closure.
Which is why it's so baffling that MHA 430, ends up doing EVERYTHING WRONG as far as an open ending possibly could.
It has no closure, it has plot holes aplenty, it manages to leave the question of will they or wont they unanswered, not by being ambigious, but by telling us, in the most unintentionally agressive manner possible that it did NOT happen, and most damningly of all, it shits all over the Story's themes.
MHA ends with the cast all grown up in an "and the adventure Continues!" ending, similar to justice league Unlimited.
That's not a BAD way to end it... The problem is EVERYTHING ELSE in this chapter.
Because we learn WAY too much in this chapter. the gaps in the timeskip is filled... but not in a good way. instead in an infuriating manner that pisses you off if you actually starts to break it down.
Let's start with Izuku being forgotten.
So i have seen some people try to shut down criticism about the fact that Izuku didnt win fortune or fame, by noting that from the thematic point, being a hero was NEVER about that from Izuku's point of view.
And that is true... but this argument misses the bigger and more obvious problem.
The story REFUSES to tackle this from that angle.
As many have pointed out, this is a BAD outcome ending for Izuku.
He returned to being quirkless, he had to settle for a job that wasn't being a hero, he has been mostly forgotten after his one big highlight, and his friends have effectively begun to move on.
And he does not care.
At all.
Hell, a 14 year old izuku who for one brief moment gave up on his dreams to chase a more realistic future, has more genuine and mixed emotion and mixed feelings in one shot, than Izuku has about actually living through a much more bittersweet scenario.
Hell, the one moment Izuku has when he looks genuinely down in this chapter, is when Aizawa admonishes him for not being strict enough with his students.
Basically the premise here is sound. Izuku ended up in a bad personal ending to set up the return to actual heroics at the end of the chapter... And that could have worked if it committed to that.
If he was portrayed as actually having regrets about his lot in life. you know, the same thing All Might's ENTIRE STORYLINE was built around!
MHA has ALWAYS been a human story that confronted the fact that people had regrets, and problems, and they need to be honest about them to deal with them.
To not bottle everything up inside and pretend the problems arent there.
For the story to end, with Izuku doing EXACTLY THAT is a slap in the face that goes EVERYTHING this story has preached about how you need to communicate with the people around you. the entire point of chapter 429, the CHAPTER RIGHT BEFORE THIS ONE!
Then of course there is the whole "Everyone Growing apart" thing too.
Now, it's not as bad as the early translation made it seem, but the point still stands that despite the entire chapter right before the end then emphasises how everyone went their separate ways.
This chapter COULD have shown us moments where Izuku is still in contact with the rest of his class, but it does not. instead it emphasises how distant he is becoming from the rest of his former friend group. He is the lone one out, the one guy who seemingly is no longer in regular contact with the rest.
The reason for that, is that Hori wanted to make the moment where he returns to the fold that much more impactfull... but it does not work, because it basically tells us that none of the class was able, or willing to make the personal sacrifice to keep in regular touch with him during those 5 years.
But FAR more egrigiously, and spitting in the face of the Theme of actually communicating and talking with the people you care about, is HOW Izuku gets back into the game.
Apparently they spent the last 5 years pooling their money to finance a high tech suit for him to fight crime in.
And i get it. I get what Hori WANTED to do with this. He wanted to show "See, Class 1-A didnt forget Izuku after all, they still love him!".
Thats the intended message.
But the problem is, it does not work. and in fact, not only does it NOT work, but it completely goes against EVERYTHING that the story has been trying to preach for the entire 10 years of it's run.
The rest of class A never told Izuku about this. ever. Why? apparently because they wanted it to be a surprise. So they just let him go on with his life for 5 years, all while none of them really bothered to keep in regular contact with him.
There is... so much wrong with that.
But before going over the way it just hammers in the point that actually talking with the people you love isnt important after all, let's go over how this entire stupid plan could have backfired SO badly on the part of class A. Hell, it kinda did actually, if not quite as spectacularily as it could have.
What if Izuku had gotten married and moved overseas during this period? What if he had gotten married in Japan, but his entire family dynamic and plans had revolved around the fact he had a job that did not require moving around much and so got to spend a lot of time at home? Hell, even within the context of what actually Happened, U.A is still going to find itself suddenly short of one teacher who his classes relies upon, if he actually wants to go pro for real.
There are so many ways this stupid 5 year scheme of secrecy could have backfired, and it does not take a genuis to be able to see them.
basically the entire class planned out Izuku's life ahead of him withouth telling him anything about it, withouth giving him the context or preparation for how to plan his future with it in mind, and how none of them seemingly cared about how this might upend his actual personal life.
And thats just the logistical issues.
Morally speaking, this just repeatedly hammers in how this final chapters just completely abandons the themes of how you need to actually work, talk and discuss your personal matters and feelings with the people around you.
1-A did none of that.
They let their relationships with Izuku cool, when they didnt have to, seemingly with the idea that it didnt matter in the end because he'd join them anew as a hero later anyway, and they could catch up then.
Which leads me to discussing the one, actual ship who's ending actually DID matter from a storytelling perspective.
Izuku and Ochako.
Now i have seen so many bad takes across the web from the people who are happy this did not happen, or argue that it does not matter.
But the brutal truth is, it does.
And the reason it does, is not because Izuku HAD to end up with Uraraka, or even that they had to be together in the final moment of the series.
It's because one of the longest running stories of this manga had NO ENDING, NO RESOLUTION, and rather than that, it wants to suggest it might still happen anyway... Despite unintentionally KILLING IT in the most infuriating way possible.
Out of all of the cast, it is Uraraka's character who is butchered by this stupid 5 year plan, to the point it even taints her entire new character direction at the end.
Uraraka ends the story having reformed the Quirk system for people growing up, helping those with difficult quirks get past mental problems... But just all the rest of her class, she chose to neglect her relationship with Izuku under the seeming thought process that she could patch it up later... Or that she could finally confess her feelings.
I'll let Shigaraki speak for my feelings on this way of thinking.
"You heroes hurt your own families just to help strangers. You heroes pretend to be society's guardians. For generations, you pretended not to see those you couldn't protect and swept their pain under the rug. It's tainted everything you built. That means your system's rotten from the inside with maggots crawling out. It all builds up little by little over time."
The intended message of MHA is a refution of this... but in this final chapter, Shigaraki's words ring true, at least as far as class A is concerned.
As they became Heroes, they neglected the one amongst them who needed the most support and instead went off to, as shigaraki put it, Help Strangers.
They pretended that Izuku's situation in the moment did not matter, because in the long haul it would all be worth it.
And just like their predeccessors, it taints everything they do.
But Uraraka most of all. If you ignore the romance angle, she has started a massive program to help strangers in need... while also neglecting and frankly mistreating someone she loves and cares about her who needed her support in his weakest period.
If you do take Romance into account, it gets even WORSE, because then you have to accept that Uraraka ultimately rejected the message that she preached with Toga, the thing that got the blonde girl to turn coat for her.
She in the end did not manage to live a life where she actually was able to do what she wanted to do, and instead remained the exact same wishywashy girl who refused to actually be open about her feelings.
Instead, she, in her final shot of the series, is in the exact same spot she was back then. A girl who would forever pine after Izuku, but never be able to open up about it.
Which would be a bad enough way to end her character on... But then when you take into account that she also participated in the 5 year plan, and there is nothing to suggest she kept in touch with him more than the rest, just makes it so much worse.
I have said before that with this ending, Uraraka's love story was an objective waste of time, and i stand by that.
Hori didnt have to end the series with Izuku and Urarak married, engaged or obviously in a relationship, but by refused to actually make it happen, and lumping Uraraka in with the entire rest of the class, he instead did something way worse.
He made it abundantly clear that regardless of what Uraraka's feelings on the matter, the relationship to Izuku was not something special. She was NOT his Hero in the moment when he actually needed one.
Neither as a friend, or as a love interest.
Her actions tainted everything else.
And of course, there is the big plot hole of this chapter.
The single biggest, and most obvious hole that is just gaping through it, that for this story to work you have to completely ignore.
Namely that 1. All Might is one of the richest peoples in the world. Class A should not have had to actually fund Izuku's suit. All Might could, and SHOULD have done that all on his own. and 2. That this tech EXISTED 8 YEARS AGO!!!!
All Might's armored suit made him one of the most powerfull figures in this entire series.
Sure it was a bit experimental, but it WORKED! it was not some unstable prototype that coudl explode at any moment, it would have worked just fine as an actual permanent power up!
For this entire stupid 5 years of Sidelines Izuku to work, you have to just PRETEND this massive hole does not exist.
And it's not a small hole that you can justify that the characters didnt think about it. It's there, and it's MASSIVE.
The only reason it's not talked about as much as all the rest is that while this is the big Material problem of this chapter, everything else is so much worse because it attacks, destroys, and taints pretty much every theme MHA had over the course of it's long run.
---Edit---
Apparently there is a throw away line in the Trivia section of Volume 39 that All Might apparently spent almost his entire fortune on his Mech suit.
Meaning that while this isn't quite the plothole I assumed it was, it IS still TERRIBLY communicated within the story itself why All Might didn't just fund Izuku's suit themselves.
---
The themes that more than anything else was what set it apart from every other battle manga that ever existed. The Human themes of actually talking to the people around you that made MHA a special story, far more than it's superhuman battles ever did.
That is why so many people are pissed off about it.
It's also why MHA is such a textbook example of how NOT to do an open ended story.
Hori could have kept the details about Izuku's life, be it his personal or proffesional life incredibly vague, beyond the basics... but he choose not to, and instead peeled back the curtain... but rather than showcasing depth, it just made the whole thing fall apart by giving us the specific details that we did not need, and which pretty much tainted the entire ending down to it's core... All completely unintentionally.
He didnt have to show that Izuku had NO specific remaining bonds with any single members Class A that were still more important to him than the rest.
But he did.
He didnt have to go out of his way to show that Izuku was completely forgotten by society at large.
But he did, and subsequentially did not actually choose to explore that.
He didnt have to show us deep, long, internal monologues from izuku's perspective where he is cartoonishly at ease with his lot in life.
But he did.
He was too specific and detailed about the things he NEEDED to keep vague, and not specific about the details that we actually needed to know, and so it all collapses in on itself in a mess of broken Themes and morals, and shattered logic, and above all else, he managed to carelessly and unintentionally cheapen every single relationship Izuku formed with the rest of his classmates over the course of this story.

forever lovely. forever true. until the day when I meet you.
a friend, a lover, or something more? we won't know until we open that door. to something new and different. together we'll discover it.
a greater purpose. loving another. stronger, truer, lovelier. forever greater when I'm with you.
a connection built on care and trust. being together strengthens both of us.
you chose me and I chose you. together we will make it through. whatever life throws at us. we will face it. stronger, truer, lovelier. together we will stand forever.
may the bond we share never end.

sometimes it hurts to remember things you wish you could forget. but painful memories will fade away eventually and you will make happier ones to replace them.
like faded ink in an old notebook. those thoughts will become unreadable.
like a song you can hum but the lyrics escape you.
like how the sun comes out after a rainstorm. good memories will shine too.
if you open your heart to new experiences; tear down your walls and let them in. you'll find that healing is possible if given time. you just have to let yourself believe it.

some days are high and some days are low.
other days can summed up as "hell if I know".
but I'm still here and every day that I am is a day where I can be stronger tomorrow if I give it a chance.
so if you're struggling too.
just know, that if you get through today you'll see a tomorrow that might just be brighter. I'm rooting for you.

My throat feels all gummy. It is probably allergies. But man it is annoying.
Today was an excellent day for the most part. I slept alright but man getting up was hard today. But once I got up things were okay. I was a little snippy when I found that the laptop wasnt plugged in last night and so I had to bring the cord with me and I was pretty upset. I felt bad for being snippy though. So yeah I wasnt in the best head space. But James made me lunch and gave me hugs and sent me off to work.
GPS was still on random mode because it took me the weirdest way possible. It was real pretty at least. Lots of nature. But also so weird!!
I got to work around 830 though and the two new kids were there. Theyre twins! All the kids I have are lovely and fun to hang out with. I got all their schedules written on the board. Which only had a few issues because. They are children. But we got things done and it was a really good day.
I worked on the first aid portion of my class. There wasnt a test at the end but it was a lot longer than the CPR. It took me a lot of today to work through it. But I got it done.
I also worked on a few frogs and got things up and going on the instagram page. Felt productive. I checked in on the kids a few times but really this job is wicked easy and they dont need me much. Just gotta refocus them a few times.
Me and the two older girls went outside around lunch for a bit. Played with my circus silk. It was a lot of fun. The brother of the twins came out to join us and me and the twins stayed out while the younger girl went back to class.
We went back inside and I spent some time teaching them all how to sew. We made little felt patches. They would tell me they were failing when they had loose threads. But I would show them how to fix it and they were just like OH! and then moments later tell me again they messed up and had to start over when that was not true. But by the end they were telling me what they wanted to make next. Very sweet.
Once everyone was done with their classes we headed outside and man. What a perfect fall day. We played with the silk. We made a leaf pile! We jumped in the pile! The girls went inside to grab cardboard boxes to help us make the pile bigger. And once we were done with that we used the boxes to slide down the hill and that was stupidly fun. I had a great time.
Soon we went inside. The youngest girl was very tired and was throwing a little bit of a fit. Mostly whiny. So I gave her a piggy back ride inside. And we all washed our hands and had juice.
But then it was time for me to go home. I wrote notes to their moms, saying how great the kids are but also saying please send more info for this one class we cant figure out, and to please send headphones along. And then I was off.
I headed to a joanns to get some more large eyes for the large frogs I am working on. I meant to get cotton and I forgot. Felt dumb esspecially because I used ALL my cotton to stuff these guys. Ugh.
I stopped for a sandwich and fries. And I am glad I did because I got stuck in traffic for like 15 minutes and while I was sitting still on the highway it was nice to have fries and a drink.
I got home around 430. I was tired. I ran into Mr Will on the corner. Told him how well my online store is going. He was really excited for me. Including the upcoming commissions we have broken the $400 mark! I am so excited about how well things are going. And I hope it just grows and I can make other things too. But the frogs are great and I love them so I am pretty happy.
I got inside and unpacked my stuff. And played animal crossing for a little while. I wanted to catch snails. So I did that. But then I heard sweetP chittering at a squirrel out on the fire escape so I had to go get him inside and decided that was when I would get to work on my frog stuff.
I stuffed the large frogs. And had a lovely conversation with someone who has made a few orders. They encouraged me to open commissions for them. So I have done that. I will have to get more large eyes. And not at the store because I paid the same for 100 eyes on ebay as I did for one pair of eyes today in person. Gotta be smart.
I did get really upset though because I thought I was printing test labels to get the paper lay out correct but I wasnt. I was getting charged. And so I wasted like $6. So I feel very very dumb and bad. James and Jess tried to make me feel better. But it is still hard.
I am pretty tired though. I have been laying in the studio writing for a while. Researching. I thought I had missed an order and so I went through all the orders matching paypal to instagram and writing down everything in my spreadsheet. It took forever but I will just do it as they happen from now on and that will keep me more organized. Im so afraid I will miss an order. I have already made mistakes sending the orders to the wrong people because of paypal vs instagram names. But I am doing my best and thats all I can do.
Now though it is after 9. And I want to go get a shower and wash my face and get ready for bed. I dont have class with the kids tomorrow but I do have the in person portion of the First Aid/ CPR class. So that will be all morning it seems. But then I can go home. But what I will actual do is go and buy more cotton fill and maybe go to the thrift store. I think it will be a nice day.
I hope you all have a great day. Take care of eachother and be safe. Wash your hands. Goodnight!!

Exodus 12:14-13:16, Matthew 20:29-21:22, Psalms 25:16-22, Proverbs 6:12-15
Today is the 31st day of January and we all know what that means. This is the last day of the first month of the year. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I'm Brian. Congratulations by the way. We’re about to complete our first full month together and I don't know about you but God is speaking to me through His word this month. I have pages and pages of journal notes and I am eager, I am hungry for all that God will speak to us throughout the rest of this year, but let's not get ahead of ourselves or behind ourselves. Let's be here now doing what we’re doing, which is taking the next step forward and allowing God's word to open up to us. We’re reading from the common English Bible this week and we’re picking up the story of the plagues and the Egyptians and we’re coming to a conclusion on that pretty dramatic retelling of God freeing his people from slavery. Exodus chapter 12 verse 14 through 13 verse 16 today.
Commentary:
Okay. So, in the book of Exodus the final plague descended upon Egypt, which was the death of the firstborn, which certainly caused the Egyptians to drive the Israelites out. So, we’re just completing our first month together, like our first month in the Bible. And, so, we can stand here together around this global campfire and look backward and see just how much ground we have covered in 31 days. And we end this month on a pretty high note, freedom. So, let's, look at the lay of the land as we close this month and begin to begin the second month of the year. Let’s just kind of orient ourselves. So, the children of Israel have just been set free from slavery and almost immediately God is handing down traditions that they are to follow in all of their future generations. So, all of the sudden ritual begins to come into the story immediately and this gives us a pretty good opportunity to talk about the Old Testament and the New Testament and what's going on. So, here in the book of Exodus we’re millennia from the birth of Jesus. So, where we sit in the book of Exodus is a couple of thousand years before Jesus was born and where we sit today is a couple of thousand years after. So, where we are in the continuum is that Jesus is kind of in the middle of the scenario, which is a great metaphor. We could probably come up with something cool to talk about that, but that’s just where it is in time. Jesus, from where we are to where Moses was, Jesus was kind of in the middle there. So, the children of Israel are just walking into their freedom, but before they will have their promised land they have to completely be transformed, right? They’re slaves, this is all they know. For 430 years all they've known is slavery. So, they have to be washed clean of that identity and set up a whole infrastructure and culture that would allow them to be free people, independent people. So, what's going to come later is that God is going to give them the law, right? And it will be extensive, and we will read it in its entirety. And that Mosaic law will govern the culture and the people, and this will still be going on when Jesus comes, which moves us into the book of Matthew.
And we get to the opportunity to look at this law, this thing that kind of encompasses how they are to behave and relate to God and one another. Jesus was born into that system and He grew up and began to minister from that context, that paradigm. And yet His entire ministry, He's critiquing the religious system, right? Like that's what he's critiquing. And, so, Jesus, God in the flesh, comes and critiques what has become of the law and what has been…and how it has been used to, in some ways, re-enslave the people, but that was not its intention. And we get clues about that in today's reading from Exodus because the people have just been set free and they are walking out of Egypt out into the desert and God begins to give them traditions. This is what you're supposed to do every year on this day. And the reason is so that they won't forget what happened. So, he's baking in ritual into their culture and He flat out tells them, the reason is so that in future generations when your children ask you, “why are we doing this stuff”, you can tell them, “it's because of what the Lord did for me when I came out of Egypt.” So, God is instituting rituals and customs and He will institute laws. And, you know, some of them will be archaic to our way of living in the world today, but they weren't at the time, they were contemporary at the time. So, God will give these laws and we can read them and go, “the law, the law, man there’s just so many rules regulations, who could ever live up to this”? And that would be true, no one will be able to perfectly obey the law because the law wasn't only about behavior modification, like this is what you can do, and this is what you can't do within your physical body. This is how you are to behave, right? God was instituting the laws that were connected to the heart so that the Hebrew people could live their lives and have constant reminders in every conceivable way about where they came from, who they are, who God is, and where they're going. It was baked in. By the time that Jesus had come the children of Israel had been through exiles, many of the tribes were utterly gone, they disappeared, they’d been assimilated into other people groups. And the law remained but it wasn't this thing connected to the heart that continually reminded people of their identity. It was the rules, it was the rules that you must obey so that a vengeful God will not come down and smite you and it was also used to control the population.
So, Jesus, God, the same being who gave the law came in person at a specific time and used His ministry in many ways to critique what had become of the law. So, Jesus comes in and starts saying things and starts breaking traditions and starts rattling the cages and getting people angry with Him, but what does He have to say about it? “I’m looking for people with eyes to see and ears to hear”. And, of course, it was the religious establishment that didn't have either of those. And they conspired and successfully killed Jesus, which is the territory that we’re moving into in the book of Matthew and that we’ll be seeing for the first time in the coming days.
That's the lay of the land in the Bible. Now we’re 2000 years in the future. And we have to critique ourselves because so often it still does boil back down to the rules. Maybe we’re not following the Mosaic law anymore, but we've distilled Jesus teachings down to do's and don'ts and somehow feel like it's our responsibility to troll everything from the Internet to our church pews as appointed deputies to sniff out sin. And yet Jesus response to that would be sniff out your own sin. Believe me, it smells enough, you don't gotta go smell the sin of everybody else or in his own vernacular, “get the log out of your own eye before you try to get the speck out of your brothers.” So, the month of January has given us a swift kick in the pants on a number of levels and has touched a lot of places inside of us and has brought us a lot of context for the story that we’re not only living through as we read the Bible, but the story we’re living in in our lives. And if we'll just let it come like we are, day by day, wave after wave as every day we come in out of the cold and come into the warmth of the global campfire, each and every day were given something. We don't have to assimilate all of this all of the time. Like, so much has happened in January alone in the Bible that we could just start over and keep doing January the whole year. There's enough here. What we need to do is relax. God will bring us what we need to live into today. Let's live into what the Scriptures bring us today. If we can live into what he brings us each and every day in the course of the year He will touch everything.
Prayer:
Father, we thank You for this month. You are big on commemorating and remembering things. And, so, we commemorate and we remember that we have journeyed one month together in this year and we have 11 to go and we are committing ourselves because You are speaking to us and things are shifting and its unexplainable because You're working from within. So, come Holy Spirit we mark this day. We have made it a month. Give us the strength the commitment the endurance and perseverance to continue for the next month. Come Holy Spirit we pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
Announcements:
dailyaudiobible.com is the website, its home base, its where you find out what’s going on around here. So, be sure to stay connected
You can visit the Daily Audio Bible shop. There are number of resources that are available to take you through this journey, like the Daily Audio Bible journals or the Blackwing writing paraphernalia that I'm a big fan of and use every day. These are resources to commemorate, to write down so that you can review remember who you are, where you've come from, who God is, where you're going. God told the children of Israel, “write these things down” and He baked in rituals and customs so that they wouldn't forget. So, this is just a modern version of that. And, of course, you can go anywhere you want, buy whatever journal you want and whatever you want to write with, that's fine. We have these resources available for this purpose. God's gonna speak, we should be taking notes, and if we’re gonna read the Bible then God is speaking.
There are other resources available, like some of the things we were just talking about as we were contextualizing where we are and looking at the life of Jesus. Yeah, I mean, there's a longer discussion about this beautiful Savior and what He means to our humanity because we’re so often living our lives confused and waiting to die basically, when Jesus transforms the way we are supposed to be human. And that discussion can be found in the resource called “Sneezing Jesus”. And all of the resources that we've ever created at Daily Audio Bible have been to further the journey, to make it go deeper, to allow this transformation to be permanent, to create irreversible change in our lives. So, check that out.
If you want to partner with the Daily Audio Bible. If you've gone through this month and light, and life has come into your world and you’re beginning to find a rhythm that this is bringing life to you, then thank you for being life-giving because what we've done and what we are doing is something that we are doing together, right? Makes no sense for me to do this by myself. I could be my introverted self and just do it quietly. We’re in this together and what we've done we've done together, and it’s been pretty remarkable. And, so, if it’s been a life-giving thing to you, then thank you for being a life-giving source back to the community. There's a link on the homepage of dailyaudiobible.com. If you are using the Daily Audio Bible app, you can press the Give button in the upper right-hand corner or, if you prefer, the mailing address is PO Box 1996 Spring Hill Tennessee 37174.
And, as always, if you have a prayer request or comment, 877-942-4253 is the number to dial.
And that's it for today. I'm Brian I love you and I'll be waiting for you here tomorrow.
Community Prayer and Praise:
Hello Daily Audio Bible, this is Isabel from Australia. The Lord’s just been really burning in my heart to pray for Margo from Australia who’s gone to her mission trip with her husband. Margo, the Lord is with you, don’t ever feel that you’re by yourself. He has called you and your husband, you’re not alone, the Lord’s with you, all your Daily Audio Bible family are praying for you too and we love you. You know, just keep your chin up, just keep on trusting in the Lord. I’ve been praying for you and I know that the Lord is with you and just don’t stress and just be happy and just see God’s heart through all of this, that you’re now doing the service for the Lord, you’re being obedient to Him and see God’s heart through all of this and God will bless you. In the beginning it’s hard but then later you’ll get used to the people and you’ll start loving the people the way the Lord us. May God bless you and your husband. I’ll be continuing praying for both of you and that the Lord keeps on, you know, healing your heart and your anxiety about everything because I know it’s a big change, but the Lord’s with you and where with you too. We love you Margo. Bye. God bless you
Good morning Daily Audio Bible family, this is Julie from Albany. Thank you for your prayers for my younger brother. This morning I’m calling…I’m calling for you Angela in California. Angela, as I was listening this morning to other prayers some things that Mike from London was saying I felt were…you just can’t replace these words. First of all, I’m just…shame…I just agree with this. God feels our pain. God can heal all. Always pray, lean on Him. Let Him be there for you. Just believe. He will take care of us but here’s the kicker, we have to let Him. Our prayers don’t go unanswered. So, pray, be in peace. I pray that the Lord heal your depression, I pray that He heal all those bad thoughts that you’re having, I pray that He bless you and lead you in the path to get the right help that you need to get you through this. And there is no…nothing bad in that. As a nurse of 35 years I say it’s okay and pray that the Lord…I pray that the Lord will direct you in that path because you are beautiful, you are irreplaceable. God doesn’t make junk. So, I hear you and I’m praying for you Angela and I’m gonna to pray and pray and pray and pray for you that all will be well. This too shall pass. Just believe, just pray to Him Angela with all of your heart and soul. We love you.
Hi family, I’m just calling for Angela from California. Now, you called in saying that you had suicidal thoughts and you wanted to take you live. And I’m just calling to, number one, cancel the assignment over her life from the enemy and I bind him right now and I cast him out. All of you evil spirits, suicide spirits, spirits of torment, spirits of depression, out in Jesus’ name and I ask Lord for the peace that surpasses all understanding to come over Angela, that she may be strengthened and that she can get through this because with God all things are possible. Lord, thank You, thank You for the family, thank You for this Daily Audio Bible and we trust You and we love You. Amen.
Hello DAB family this is Shantae calling from Metro Detroit and I am calling in today to say hello to everybody. And I can’t stress it enough, if you are going through something and you have burdens, give them to the Lord, but also call into the DAB, let us pray for you because when I called in last time and many times previously as well with my prayer requests and I hang up the phone and instantly I feel God’s peace in such an intense level and it’s all of our prayers just joined together. There’s power in numbers and we don’t have to go to this alone. When you call in, that’s with Brian tells you when you call into the hotline or whatever you want to call it, our family line or whatever. But anyway, so I really encourage you all to call in and just want to let you all know that I’m doing much better. My circumstances haven’t changed all that much but by perspective and God’s peace is just upon me and each time I have anxious thoughts I just give them to the Lord and I just really encourage you all, call in, let us know how you’re doing and know that you are loved, know that there are thousands upon thousands praying for you. So, I will talk with y’all later. Love you all. Bye-bye.
Hi good morning, this is Bridget from New York City again. I just heard Angela’s prayer request. Today is January 24th. Angela, I’m just gonna to lift you up in prayer. Heavenly Father, Lord, I just thank You for Angela’s life. I thank You that You’ve given her purpose on this earth Lord and I just I pray Father for her to see Your purpose for her life Father God. Father, You’ve chosen her, Your word says that You’ve chosen her to be a vessel of You light Father God. Your word says that Your Holy Spirit resides within her Father God. I just pray for Your Holy Spirit to give her strength, to give her mental strength, to give her emotional strength, to give her physical strength Father. Lord, Holy Spirit can revive what is dead inside of her. So, I pray for light. I pray that You would just desire light. Angela, the Lord calls us to call out on…
He there this is a call for Angela in California. You called the prayer line on January 24th and you were talking about your mental illness with depression and your thoughts of suicide. And Angela, I am so thankful that you called in. It’s so good for those of us who don’t struggle with depression to hear what its really like so that we can have compassion. My mother struggles with bipolar disorder and I get really frustrated when I don’t understand when she’s in a depressive episode. So, thank you so much for your honesty and your vulnerability. Angela, I just pray for you that God gives you peace. You’re clinging onto Him and I promise you He won’t snuff you out. Continue to cling onto Him. And Angela amid a prayer of you Numbers 6:24-26. “May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. May the Lord turn His face toward you and give you peace.” Angela keep holding on and keep putting one foot in front of the other. The Lord is there with you, and He loves you and He wants to take you into His bosom and heal you completely. Hang in there, friend, and call us back. Bye-bye.

Scaring Me
Part two: Bokuto
Requested: yes.
Description: Bokuto and his s/o get into a fight. He gets pissed and punches the wall, scaring her.
You frowned and slumped farther into your seat. Bokuto was supposed to be here an hour ago. You guys planned to have a date night in. You cooked a real nice dinner, picked out some favorite movies, made his favorite desert, even got all dressed up yourself. Now you were sitting around waiting for him. You tried calling him but got no answer. You perked up when you heard the apartment door open. Bokuto walked in, dropping his gym bag by the door. This wasn’t the first time something like this happened.
“Why are you all dressed up?” He asked with a chuckle and confused face.
“Are you serious?” You asked in shock.
He simply frowned. “Yes? Why?”
You glared at him. “We were supposed to have a night in together. Remember? we were gonna have a romantic dinner and watch some movies.”
Bokuto perked up at that. “Wait, that was tonight?”
“Yes it was tonight!” you shouted. “I made a nice big dinner, you favorite dessert, and even dressed up!”
“Shit babe.” Bokuto started.
“Don’t you ‘babe’ me!” You cut off. “I can’t believe you forgot. This was supposed to be a special night for us! And you what? Decided a long workout was better than coming home?”
“Hey now, don’t be like that.” Bokuto frowned.
“No! I will be however I want. I am so glad that I rank so low on the list of things that are important to you.”
“Hey! You know that is not true!” Bokuto raised his voice slightly. “You are the most important thing to me and I am going to make up for this.” You simply rolled your eyes, not believing him. “This Saturday we are going out. I am gonna take you out to that fancy restaurant you have always wanted to try. You are gonna get all dressed up and I am gonna take you out and spoil you.”
“Sure you are.” You sigh monotone. “Thought you have a volleyball practice this Saturday?”
“I will be home by 3 at the latest.” He scoffed. “I promise babe. I swear up and down. I will take you out. I will make reservations in the morning even. I want to see you all dolled up and ready to go by 6 this Saturday.”
“Alright. I believe you.” You smiled softly.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Saturday morning you woke up to an empty bed. Bokuto must have left early this morning. You went into the kitchen to find a note on the counter.
“Good morning babe! Sorry I left before you got up. I just wanted to get a few things done for tonight. I won’t see you until this afternoon. I’m going to the gym before volleyball. I left some extra money in your purse though. Go treat yourself babe! Also I made pancakes and bacon. They are in the oven to stay warm. Love ya!”
You smiled at the note. He really was putting a lot of effort into making sure this was a special day. Maybe you were a bit harsh the other night. You decided you would go out and buy a new outfit for tonight. Maybe even a little something special to go under the outfit.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You glanced at the clock as you worked on getting ready. It was already 430. Bokuto should be back by now. You tried to shrug it off. He still had plenty of time. You decided to take a nice relaxing bath instead of a shower. That would help ease your mind.
By the end of your bath, he still wasn’t home. You frowned and went about getting more done. You really were going all out. You painted your nails before your bath. Afterwards you used a lotion you knew Bokuto liked to make your skin all soft. Next was going to be your hair. It would take the longest.
You finished your hair, curling it and fixing into a fun half updo. You also got your makeup completely done, going for a classic look with winged eyeliner and red lips. You looked at the clock. 5:30. He should be here by now. You had to leave in half an hour! You sent him a quick text asking him what was going on but got no reply. You decided to finish getting ready. Perhaps he was gonna show up ready? You slipped into your new lingerie set and then put on your new dress. It was a black sleeveless dress with lace overlaying it. The dress fabric had a sweetheart neckline but the lace went all the way up to the start of your neck. It cut off a couple inches above your knees. You paired it will a set of red pumps and a red clutch. You glanced in the mirror loving your look. You couldn't wait to go out and show it off. You sat on the couch with your favorite book wile you waited for Bokuto. It wouldn’t be long.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He forgot. It was now eight o’clock and you had yet to see him or hear from him. You had been ditched again. Just as your turned to storm into your room, the main door flew open. An out of breath Bokuto came flying in. You could tell from the look of panic on his face that he knew he mistake.
“Shit babe.” He started but you cut him off.
“Save it. I don’t want to hear your lame excuse.” You huffed. “I’m going to bed.”
“Come on.” He sighed. “Can we just talk for a minute?”
“You wanna talk?” You spun on your heel to face him. “Okay then lets talk. Let’s talk about how many times you have forgotten the plans we have, how many times I have gone to bed before you got home, or how many times I have woke up to find you gone. We could talk about how many times I have rescheduled things because they don’t fit your volleyball schedule, just for me to have to change it again. How many things have we missed out on because of your stupid volleyball shit?!”
“Hey! You knew when this relationship started that volleyball was important to me. Don’t act like that is something new. You didn’t have a problem with it before.” He became defensive.
“Because we were in high school!” You shouted. “We were kids. It didn’t matter if a sport controlled your whole life then! We are adults now! Yet you still spend three fourths of your day at the gym or with volleyball. I know it is your career now. But I doubt all those other players spend that much time there. I am sure they go home and spend time with their family.” You paused and took a step back. “Oh god. Are you cheating on me?”
Bokuto glared at you. “Did you just fucking accuse me of cheating?”
You shook your head. “You are aren’t you? That’s why you are never home. or why you never care to see me. You found someone else!”
Bokuto was suddenly towering over you. “Don’t you dare fucking accuse me of cheating on you!” His voice boomed. “Do you honestly think so low of me that you think I would do something like that to you?! Have I sunk that low?!” You didn’t answer, suddenly scared of Bokuto for the first time. “Just because I am not making my day revolve around your and your fucking needs for affection. Have you ever stopped to consider that maybe I have stuff going on? No. You are just upset that you are not the center of my attention right now.”
Bokuto never before spoke so harshly to you. You could feel the tears threatening to break loose. You pushed him away and darted into the bathroom, locking the door. You heard him punch the wall near the door. You turned on the shower so that he would not be able to hear you cry. You sat on the floor, knees to chest and let it out. For the first time ever, you were actually afraid of him. You looked at your phone, half tempted to call Akaashi to come get you but also not wanting to drag him into the mess.
After a few minutes there was a hesitate knock on the door. You held your breath, as if you were afraid he could hear it over the shower.
“I’m sorry. Please just....just come talk to me please.” He sounded desperate. You sat there unsure. “I didn’t mean what I said. Come on babe. I know you aren’t in the shower. Just talk to me.”
You turned off the shower. “Fine. I will talk to you. But I am staying in here.” You weren’t quite ready to go out there.
“That’s fair.” You heard him sigh. “I didn’t mean what I said. I shouldn’t have yelled at you like that. I am sorry babe. I know there is no reason I should act like that towards you. I have just been stressed out.”
“Why?” You croaked.
“We have championships coming up, you know. And that itself adds some pressure. But a couple of our best players are talking about leaving. And I heard my boss talking about what to do with me. I don’t know what is going on. I figured if I just worked extra and put in a lot more time and effort that if it was something bad he would rethink it.”
“You could’ve just told me.”
“I know. And I should have. I am sorry that I didn’t. I just didn’t want to worry you. I was so excited to take you out tonight. I was going to spoil you and get to spend some much needed time with you. Plus I was going to finally relax. Coach wanted the practice to go later and all the other guys were for it. I was nervous to not agree. Then they had a meeting and work outs. I didn’t notice the other guys leaving or the time. I just noticed that the coach was constantly keeping an eye on me. I am so sorry baby. Please believe me.”
You sighed and finally opened the bathroom door. He was standing right there, eyes red from unshed tears. You wrapped your arms around him and sighed when you felt his arms tighten around you. “I am sorry I accused you of cheating. I should’ve tried talking to you.”
“It’s not your fault babe. I should be more considerate. I promise I will fix this. You are always the most important thing to me.” He kissed your forehead. “It’s not too late to go out you know. The restruant is open until eleven.”
You grinned up and him and felt your heart flutter to see his classic grin on his face.
Saturday (February 9): "Come away and rest a while"
Scripture: Mark 6:30-34
30 The apostles returned to Jesus, and told him all that they had done and taught. 31 And he said to them, "Come away by yourselves to a lonely place, and rest a while." For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat. 32 And they went away in the boat to a lonely place by themselves. 33 Now many saw them going, and knew them, and they ran there on foot from all the towns, and got there ahead of them. 34 As he went ashore he saw a great throng, and he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things.
Meditation: What does the image of a shepherd tell us about God's care for us? Shepherding was one of the oldest of callings in Israel, even before farming, since the Chosen People had traveled from place to place, living in tents, and driving their flocks from one pasture to another. Looking after sheep was no easy calling. It required great skill and courage. Herds were often quite large, thousands or even ten thousands of sheep. The flocks spent a good part of the year in the open country. Watching over them required a great deal of attention and care.
Stray sheep must be brought back lest they die Sheep who strayed from the flock had to be sought out and brought back by the shepherd. Since hyenas, jackals, wolves, and even bear were common and fed on sheep, the shepherds often had to do battle with these wild and dangerous beasts. A shepherd literally had to put his life on the line in defending his sheep. Shepherds took turns watching the sheep at night to ward off any attackers. The sheep and their shepherds continually lived together. Their life was so intimately bound together that individual sheep, even when mixed with other flocks, could recognize the voice of their own shepherd and would come immediately when called by name.
God himself leads us like a good shepherd The Old Testament often spoke of God as shepherd of his people, Israel. The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want (Psalm 23:1). Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel, you who lead Joseph like a flock! (Psalm 80:1) We are his people, and the sheep of his pasture (Psalm 100:3). The Messiah is also pictured as the shepherd of God's people: He will feed his flock like a shepherd, he will gather the lambs in his arms (Isaiah 40:11).
Jesus told his disciples that he was the Good Shepherd who was willing to lay down his life for his sheep (Matthew 18:12, Luke 15:4, John 10). When he saw the multitude of people in need of protection and care, he was moved to respond with compassionate concern. His love was a personal love for each and every person who came to him in need.
Jesus is the Shepherd and Guardian of our souls Peter the apostle called Jesus the Shepherd and Guardian of our souls (1 Peter 2:25). Do you know the peace and security of a life freely submitted to Jesus, the Good Shepherd? In the person of the Lord Jesus we see the unceasing vigilance and patience of God's love. In our battle against sin and evil, Jesus is ever ready to give us help, strength, and refuge. Do you trust in his grace and help at all times?
"Lord Jesus, you guard and protect us from all evil. Help me to stand firm in your word and to trust in your help in all circumstances. May I always find rest and refuge in the shelter of your presence."
Psalm 119:9-14
9 How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word.
10 With my whole heart I seek you; let me not wander from your commandments!
1 I have laid up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.
12 Blessed are you, O L
ORD
; teach me your statutes!
13 With my lips I declare all the ordinances of your mouth.
14 In the way of your testimonies I delight as much as in all riches.
Daily Quote from the early church fathers: The good shepherd feeds us with the words of God, by Augustine of Hippo, 354-430 A.D.
"The pastures that this good shepherd has prepared for you, in which he has settled you for you to take your fill, are not various kinds of grasses and green things, among which some are sweet to the taste, some extremely bitter, which as the seasons succeed one another are sometimes there and sometimes not. Your pastures are the words of God and his commandments, and they have all been sown as sweet grasses. These pastures had been tasted by that man who said to God, 'How sweet are your words to my palate, more so than honey and the honeycomb in my mouth!' (Psalm 119:103)." (excerpt from Sermon 366.3)
Friday (February 8): Herod's guilty conscience
Scripture: Mark 6:14-29
14 King Herod heard of it; for Jesus' name had become known. Some said, "John the baptizer has been raised from the dead; that is why these powers are at work in him." 15 But others said, "It is Elijah." And others said, "It is a prophet, like one of the prophets of old." 16 But when Herod heard of it he said, "John, whom I beheaded, has been raised." 17 For Herod had sent and seized John, and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife; because he had married her. 18 For John said to Herod, "It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife." 19 And Herodias had a grudge against him, and wanted to kill him. But she could not, 20 for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and kept him safe. When he heard him, he was much perplexed; and yet he heard him gladly.
21 But an opportunity came when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his courtiers and officers and the leading men of Galilee. 22 For when Herodias' daughter came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests; and the king said to the girl, "Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will grant it." 23 And he vowed to her, "Whatever you ask me, I will give you, even half of my kingdom." 24 And she went out, and said to her mother, "What shall I ask?" And she said, "The head of John the baptizer." 25 And she came in immediately with haste to the king, and asked, saying, "I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter." 26 And the king was exceedingly sorry; but because of his oaths and his guests he did not want to break his word to her. 27 And immediately the king sent a soldier of the guard and gave orders to bring his head. He went and beheaded him in the prison, 28 and brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl; and the girl gave it to her mother. 29 When his disciples heard of it, they came and took his body, and laid it in a tomb.
Meditation: Do you ever feel haunted by a past failure or a guilty conscience? The Lord Jesus came to set us free from the oppression of sin and guilt. King Herod, the most powerful and wealthy man in Judea, had everything he wanted, except a clear conscience and peace with God. Herod had respected and feared John the Baptist as a great prophet and servant of God. John, however did not fear to rebuke Herod for his adulterous relationship with his brother's wife, Herodias. John ended up in prison because of Herodias' hatred and jealousy. Herod, out of impulse and a desire to please his family and friends, had John beheaded. Now Herod's conscience is pricked when he hears that some think that the Baptist has risen.
Guilt and pride cripples - repentance and pardon heals When Herod heard the fame of Jesus he supposed that John the Baptist, whom he had beheaded, had returned from the dead. Unfortunately for Herod, he could not rid himself of sin by ridding himself of the man who confronted him with his sin. Herod was a weak man. He could take a strong stand on the wrong things when he knew the right. Such a stand, however, was a sign of weakness and cowardice. The Lord gives grace to the humble, to those who acknowledge their sins and who seek God's mercy and pardon. His grace and pardon not only frees us from a guilty conscience, it enables us to pursue holiness in thought and action as well. God's grace enables us to fight fear with faith and to overcome the temptation to compromise goodness and truth with wrongdoing and falsehood.
John Chrysostom describes John's death as a crown:
In what way, then, was this just man harmed by this demise, this violent death, these chains, this imprisonment? Who are those he did not set back on their feet - provided they had a penitent disposition - because of what he spoke, because of what he suffered, because of what he still proclaims in our own day - the same message he preached while he was living. Therefore, do not say: "Why was John allowed to die?" For what occurred was not a death, but a crown, not an end, but the beginning of a greater life. Learn to think and live like a Christian. You will not only remain unharmed by these events, but will reap the greatest benefits.(ON THE PROVIDENCE OF GOD 22.10)
Do you rely on God's grace and help to choose his way of holiness and to reject whatever would compromise your faith and loyalty to Jesus Christ?
"Heavenly Father, form in me the likeness of your Son that I may imitate him in word and deed. Help me to live the Gospel faithfully and give me the strength and courage I need to not shrink back in the face of adversity and temptation."
Psalm 18:30, 46, 49-50
30 This God - his way is perfect; the promise of the LORD proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him. 46 The LORD lives; and blessed be my rock, and exalted be the God of my salvation 49 For this I will extol you, O LORD, among the nations, and sing praises to your name. 50 Great triumphs he gives to his king, and shows mercy to his anointed, to David and his descendants for ever.
Daily Quote from the early church fathers: The Weakness of the Tyrant and the Power of the Beheaded, by John Chrysostom (347-407 AD)
"Note well the weakness of the tyrant compared to the power of the one in prison. Herod was not strong enough to silence his own tongue. Having opened it, he opened up countless other mouths in its place and with its help. As for John, he immediately inspired fear in Herod after his murder - for fear was disturbing Herod's conscience to such an extent that he believed John had been raised from the dead and was performing miracles (Mark 6:14-16)! In our own day and through all future time, throughout all the world, John continues to refute Herod, both through himself and through others. For each person repeatedly reading this Gospel says: 'It is not lawful for you to have the wife of Philip your brother' (Mark 6:18). And even apart from reading the Gospel, in assemblies and meetings at home or in the market, in every place... even to the very ends of the earth, you will hear this voice and see that righteous man even now still crying out, resounding loudly, reproving the evil of the tyrant. He will never be silenced nor the reproof at all weakened by the passing of time." (excerpt from ON THE PROVIDENCE OF GOD 22.8-9)
My 2018
When I begin to think about my 2018, as cliche as it sounds, a rollercoaster comes to mind and believe me when I tell you it has been one heck of a ride. The year started out with one final semester in Happy Valley soaking up every last minute of happiness, memories, and time without any “real” responsibilities.
Some highlights included my last THON (sad 😢), my HM 430 class where our dinner was California inspired, a 6AM trip to The Phyrst on St. Patrick’s Day, spring break in Cancun, The Young Hoteliers Summit in Lausanne, Switzerland, the first annual “SHM Around the World” event created and executed by yours truly, a visit from my CEO to Happy Valley for a Penn State/Marriott event, and of course graduation. It breaks my heart to have had to say goodbye to the place that gave me my best four years, friends for life, and the love of my life (oh yeah and of course my degree), but as my boyfriend and I constantly remind ourselves, we are so lucky to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard. Not to mention Penn State will forever be a part of my life so although I may have left, I know I’ll always be back.
With graduation came the dreadful start to my first full time job and the real world, and boy did I think I was living the dream. When asked about my job, my answer was always that everyone says your first job isn’t your dream job but I felt like it really was a dream come true. Fast forward 2/3 months and I couldn’t fathom how I got to where I was. In fact I was so angry with myself because I wasn’t sure how I could end up in a position that made me so unbearably unhappy. Every day I cried on the subway, I cried to my roommates, I cried to my boyfriend, I cried myself to sleep. I tried everything in my being to find the bright side. I listened to podcasts, I made a “positivity” playlist, I even tried to look for a new job at one point when I didn’t think I would make it. My roommates and I made a positivity/quote board. I tried to let the Christmas decorations in October reassure me that the end or at least the halfway point was near. I began using the expiration date of my milk as a gauge of seeing how far away I was from making it. Everyone told me “you can do anything for a year,” but what does anyone else know when they didn’t have to work weekends and have Thanksgiving dinner in a hotel cafeteria, or miss every normal thing that happened on weekends; no football games, no Friday or Saturday nights out, basically I missed everything that meant something to me. And better yet, when I finally was off from work, it would be a Monday or Tuesday so I would spend the day alone doing practically nothing. I began to thank God for the days I went to work in daylight because I would go days at a time without seeing it; going in to work before dawn and not getting off until after sunset. I dealt and still continue to deal with creepy men who follow me as I commute at 4am, homeless people who approach me, and construction workers who whistle at me as I sip my coffee at 5am. At work I tried my best to make it through a shift while associates commented on my looks, looked me up and down, and worst of all knowingly allowed me or forced me to make mistakes. I felt completely overworked and under appreciated. One day a stranger saw me pass by on the subway looking so upset they motioned across the platform at me to smile. And that’s when I knew I truly was not in a good place. Those first few months are a blur of trying my best to make the most of it. And to give myself some credit, for the most part I did.. I went to a concert at Madison Square garden to see one of my favorite singers, I made sure I passed the Rockefeller Christmas tree enough times to feel the holiday spirit, I made it down to the beach, I got to see my sister graduate high school, I helped recruit at Penn State, I saw Macy’s 4th of July fireworks and Thanksgiving parade, did a bit of sight seeing and enjoying the city, and actually did have some good days. I even joined a new church that has done nothing but instill in me such faith and hope that I will never face anything in life alone but with God there every step of the way. But this isn’t the position for me, this is not the lifestyle for me, and I’ve also questioned whether the hotel industry is even still for me. And just like that 6 months of my year have flown by. I am about to transition to the front desk and I have 6 more months that I feel will be better than the last. I longed for what felt like forever to get to this point and here I am, stronger than I was before and ready to take on the second half of my program.
In the midst of this whirlwind, my boyfriend landed a position in Houston. One weekend he came to visit me in NYC and we had “the talk.” The talk about what it would mean for us and what we wanted in life and together as a couple and it opened my eyes to a whole side of life I never imagined. If we want to be together, then I would have to move and with that would come sacrifices but nothing that we wouldn’t face together. Luckily I am not in a position where my job is keeping me where I am at and it’s not something I want to continue after my program ends.
So I write this as I am flying back to NYC after a weekend of apartment hunting in Houston with my boyfriend (also worth noting my very first time in Houston). I write this with every intention to make the move when my program ends in June and join him down south. This change in my life forces me to reflect on where life takes you and the plan God has for you. I never would have imagined as I walked across that stage to receive my diploma in May that I would be applying for an apartment with my boyfriend of 3+ years just a few months later and I never thought of all places it would be Texas. But with all of this comes excitement. Excitement for new experiences, and for a new start, but most of all with a man who I love and I see a future with. I think it reaffirms my philosophy that in life you have to take chances, step out of your comfort zone, and say yes to new experiences. I start 2019 with the hope that new and better things are to come.
“Your current situation is not your final destination.” “Tread lightly but carry a big stick.” “Its not that you’re going to get through this. It’s that you’re *PRESENT TENSE* getting through this. Even though it might not feel like it right now. You’re getting though this.” “The best is yet to come.”
With pandemic, Italian Championship uncertainties affect clubs and players
EFE / EPA / SIMONE ARVEDADuel between Rome and Sampdoria for the Italian Championship
“Il pallone è fermo”. The phrase, in Italian, emphasizes that the ball is stopped. Exactly how it should be, amid 19 covid pandemic. What could be the near future of Italian Championship? The uncertainties are many. Some clubs like Brescia (team of the homonymous city that lives in a dramatic situation, with the loss of countless lives and a high incidence of contagions) call for the end of the competition. Others, like Torino, are preparing to return to the pitch in early June, if possible.
Urbano Cairo, who has owned the Turin team since 2015, believes it is necessary to save European competition and tournaments. “I believe, however, that we cannot go beyond the date of June 30th. This would create a huge problem for the start of the next season, ”he explained. “If the championship ends at the end of July, we would have to start the next season in October and that, yes, would further complicate the season for the following year,” continued the president of Torino.
And not only the dates for the restart of the Italian Championship worry clubs. There is so much more. The salaries of players and the coaching staff are also subjects of debate in the midst of the pandemic. “There must be a sacrifice on both sides. It is well known that most Italian football teams are in debt, but now we are facing a world crisis and debts existed long before. We have to resolve the current situation, ”noted Cairo.
The period of interruption of matches represents an important blow to the finances of clubs that cannot count on tickets from ticket sales. Parallel jobs are also stopped. In addition, if the 2019/2020 season is not resumed, it is feared that the portion of 430 million euros (almost R $ 2.5 billion) for television broadcasting rights will not be transferred, apart from the risk of “flight” from sponsors. The total lack of revenue could reach 700 million euros (R $ 4 billion). Nothing big in Italy is working except hospitals. Not even the Holy Church has its doors open. Italians were hit hard by the disease.
Some football clubs are taking steps to reduce the economic impact. This week, the leader Juventus was a pioneer in announcing a measure: the star Cristiano Ronaldo and his teammates – stopped since March 8 when they played against Inter Milan – accepted a reduction of more than 30% of the salaries of the months of March to June. Savings of 90 million euros (about R $ 500 million).
Cristiano Ronaldo's Juventus is a favorite for the Italian Championship title
But not all clubs have made a decision about it. A Milan source reported that the club has not yet taken a particular position on the payment of salaries and that the evolution of the general situation is being closely monitored.
“For us, the health and safety of associates, employees and supporters are priorities,” he said. And, about the restart of the championship, he added: “We are a football team, we would like to get on the field again as soon as possible. When will this be possible? Only when the government and health authorities authorize it ”. On March 21, Milan reported that the idol and current technical director of the club, Paolo Maldini, and his son and team player, Daniel Maldini, tested positive for the coronavirus, but were in good condition.
The Minister of Sport, Vincenzo Spadafora, communicated through a video on Facebook that the Italian government has been working on the elaboration of a big plan for the recovery of the entire sector that had been stopped for a month. In the case of football, it would be more than welcome. Conducted by the newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, an analysis of the last financial statement of the 20 clubs that make up the Italian Championship estimates an overall debt of 2.5 billion euros (about R $ 14 billion). It is true that revenue increased in the 2018/2019 season and currently reaches 2.7 billion euros (R $ 15.5 billion), but expenses have also increased (from 3 to 3.5 billion euros). When viewed together, the losses of the most recent five seasons exceeded 44%.
If Italian teams in the first division are struggling, what about the other divisions? The Association of Italian Footballers (AIC, in the acronym in Italian) proposes a fund formed by several members to help other professional divisions, women's football and amateur football. “It is a delicate moment. We have been talking to the various federations for days to understand what the established negotiations are worth. Unfortunately, we also discussed the possibility that the season will be canceled ”, commented by telephone the president of AIC, the former Roma player Damiano Tommasi. “The proposal is for players and clubs to sacrifice themselves. Our hope is that we can start playing again in May or June and that we can guarantee the salaries of players from lower divisions ”, he hopes.
While elite athletes make themselves available to their clubs, colleagues in the second and third divisions are at risk of not receiving salaries in the coming months. The Brazilian Claiton dos Santos, 36, defender of Cremonese, has a contract until June of this year with the Serie B team. , May and June may not be carried out ”, he said, who this year had already thought about retiring. “I did my nest egg, but many players in early career still depend on this monthly income. I hope that AIC and the federations can reach an agreement ”.
The uncertainty about the future of the Italian Championship, as well as that of English, French, Spanish, German and other European countries, can affect competitions organized by UEFA. Sought by the state report, the entity's vice president, Michele Uva, declined to comment on the current situation. The official, however, ratified UEFA's proposal to continue European competitions in August.
In an interview with the newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, Uva said that it is not for the entity to determine the dates for the start and end of the local championships, a decision that must be taken by the federations. The vice president also added that the important thing would be to return to the stadium, even without the presence of fans.
This isn’t the first time I’ve tried the online clothing store “Femme Luxe.” My first round with them featured 1 dress, 1 shirt, 1 jacket and 1 sweater dress. Some items were so NOT my personal style (but ended up being fun additions to my wardrobe), others weren’t the greatest quality and some were perfectly fine quality. It was a big “hit and miss” experience. (Click here if you missed that post.)
Now, Femme Luxe was kind enough to let me try out 4 more pieces to see how my experience would be with them this time around. There were a couple items on their website that I was quite excited about – and others I thought there was no way in hell I would ever wear…but secretly wanted to try them anyways. So, I’ll break down each piece again with complete honesty.
Femme Luxe Jumpsuit
I have never worn a jumpsuit until this one. I’ve always been secretly intrigued but also terrified of them. I mean, I drink a lot of coffee and water throughout the day…how in the world do you go to the bathroom in these things? Answer: you strip down to your skivvies! (So, not a fan of that.) However, I always LOVE the way they look on everyone who wears them. They make your legs look a mile long, in my opinion. They’re also very stylish and chic.
This particular jumpsuit is actually really good quality for the price, in my opinion. I was surprised how nice it looked on. The website made it look a little too scandalous for my taste…but I think it can be pretty classy with the right accessories. It also stays up really well, despite having the one exposed shoulder. I didn’t have to fix the top part of it at all while I wore it.
That being said, I don’t think I’ll ever wear this jumpsuit again – I mean, look at that grundy?! Why would I want to wear something that is constantly riding up my bum (and other spots, eh em)? Or wear something that makes going to the bathroom a difficult experience? This isn’t a knock on Femme Luxe by any means…I think they made a mighty fine jumpsuit here. I just don’t think jumpsuits, in general, are ever going to be for me!
Where to find it: Jumpsuit c/o* | Pumps | Necklace
Verdict: Good quality for the price. Fits true to size (but sizes are in UK sizes – FYI!). Still not sold on jumpsuits, though.
Oversized Long-sleeved shirt dress
Now, this shirt dress is a little out there (see, what I did there – good lord, my puns are bad), but I honestly really like it! It’s super comfy, and I’m all for weird space-themed clothing. This was one of those items I put on immediately with a pair of skinny jeans to go run errands in. I think it would look best with some fun leggings or leather pants, though. (Something I don’t have.)
Things to note, though, this shirt dress is actually different than what it looks like on the website. The website has it looking more like a sweatshirt with a fitted bottom and fitted in the sleeves. Mine is quite loose on the bottom and it has slits on each side. The sleeves are also loose and VERY long. So, the product is not quite the same as what you’re seeing on the website.
Where to find it: Shirt dress c/o* | Flats | Tights | Sunglasses
Verdict: I like it! The quality is fine, but the website image is not the same as what I got!
Femme Luxe One Shoulder Midi Dress
This dress is a very similar look and feel to the jumpsuit from Femme Luxe. However, it is a nice length and isn’t constantly riding up places it shouldn’t be! I also though the top part stayed up remarkably well considering it only has the one sleeve.
I really don’t have anything negative to say about the dress itself, it’s just not my style. I don’t usually wear such fitted dresses or ones that require me to wear a strapless bra.
Where to find: Dress c/o* | Pumps | Necklace | Sunglasses
Verdict: Not my style, but the dress is perfectly fine. It’s also true to size.
Fitted T-shirt
Ok, so, I actually ordered this exact shirt from Femme Luxe last time…However, it was super tight on me. So, I thought maybe if I ordered up a size it would be a little comfier…but, no dice. This shirt is still REALLY fitted. It is a smidge longer, though. Ah, well, it’ll be a good layering piece in the winter!
Where to find it: Shirt | Necklace | Sunglasses
Verdict: Not a fan. It’s really tight, transparent and not the best quality.
Overall, I don’t really have strong feelings one way or the other regarding this site. The quality is fine for the price, it’s not the best quality clothing I’ve ever come across, but it is also quite inexpensive (so, you get what you pay for). It reminds me of clothing from “The Deb” – anyone remember that store? That’s the best comparison I can come up with! And if you missed my last post featuring Femme Luxe, click here for even more info.
Benito Cereno and Putnam's Monthly
Emily Gallagher
"Seguid vuestro jefe (Follow your leader)"
These were the words written in chalk beneath the figurehead of the ship the San Dominick. They are the words that appear frequently throughout Benito Cereno, a novella based upon true events. Authored by Herman Melville, it first appeared in three issues of the magazine Putnam’s Monthly in 1855, during the months October, November, and December. The most impactful and haunting usage of these words in Benito Cereno is arguably in the lengthy, last sentence:
“The body was burned to ashes; but for many days, the head, that hive of subtlety, fixed on the pole in the Plaza, met, unabashed, the gaze of the whites; and across the Plaza looked towards St. Bartholomew’s church, in whose vaults slept then, as now, the recovered bones of Aranda: and across the Rimac bridge looked towards the monastery, on Mount Agonia without; where, three months after being dismissed by the court, Benito Cereno, borne on the bier, did, indeed, follow his leader.”
-from Putnam's Monthly, vol. 6, p. 644
(Illus. engraved on wood by Garrick Palmer for the Imprint Society edition of Benito Cereno, 1972)
So what does this all mean? Which leader did Benito follow? These are the questions that immediately came to my mind when I finished reading the last line of Benito Cereno. I figured Herman Melville emphasized “follow your leader” for a reason, one that ultimately dealt with the issue of slavery in the US during the year it was published, 1855. In order to understand the conclusion I came to, one must know the basic details of the novella.
Benito Cereno is told from the perspective of Captain Delano, who comes across a disheveled ship named the San Dominick, with many African slaves aboard. He meets the captain, a Spaniard named Don Benito Cereno, along with his seemingly faithful slave Babo. Benito tells Delano that their dire state was caused by storms and an outbreak of disease, so Delano offers his help. The great twist is that the slaves aboard the ship had revolted and taken over, with Babo as their leader. Babo killed his old master and Benito’s friend, Alexandro Aranda, and had Benito under his control the entire time. At the end of the story, Babo is captured and sentenced to death. As stated in the passage above, his head is mounted on a pole, and Benito Cereno dies soon after as well.
But why did Melville say Benito “[followed] his leader”? Was he following his friend Aranda in death, or the slave Babo who had succeeded in controlling him?
I interpreted it as Benito following Babo, who had outsmarted him. I thought Babo’s remarkable actions were used by Melville to dispute the belief that blacks had to be enslaved because they were naturally inferior to whites in intelligence.
However, as I read other articles published in Putnam’s Monthly during the year 1855 through the HathiTrust digital library, as well as visited Special Collections to look at a physical copy from the year 1853 (unfortunately, the 1855 version was not suitable for being handled), I realized that my interpretation of Benito Cereno was not the only one, and may be different from the original audience who read it during its year of publication.
(Special Collection's edition of Putnam's Monthly, vol. 2, 1853)
Although Putnam’s Monthly was considered a progressive magazine during its time, containing many abolitionist publications, “the question of slavery,” was still widely debated by its editors and readers, so I discovered while reading. Knowing what historical events were happening during this year in America helped me understand how readers received Melville’s work.
One article titled “The Kansas Question,” which I found in vol. 6, July to December, of Putnam’s Monthly (the same section as Benito Cereno), was particularly helpful in giving me historical context. According to the article, there was a period of political quiet in 1850, but by 1855 the “flames of former feud, extinguished for a brief time, were kindled once more,” (vol.6: 425) and the “question of slavery” became important to nearly everyone. Thus, Benito Cereno was published during a year of heavy discourse on slavery in the US, meaning its contents were extremely relevant.
While reading “The Kansas Question,” I learned that the widespread interest in slavery was largely caused by the Kansas-Nebraska bill of 1854, which repealed the Missouri Compromise, allowing those living in Kansas and Nebraska to decide whether or not to allow slavery. This article offers a progressive viewpoint, with the author criticizing those they called the “propagandists of slavery,” as well as reminding readers that when the Constitution was formed slavery “existed as an acknowledged evil” (428) that was supposed to be temporary. The author speaks out against the greed that caused slaveholders to “[ransack] physiological science, to establish the inferiority of the black race, and the consequent duty of protecting it and educating it to labor” (429). He even points out the flawed logic of this argument, asking “of what use to the slave, or to his race, would be an education protracted to the hour of his death” (430)?
(The Kansas Nebraska Act from Kansas Historical Society, 1854)
From the contents of this article, it is evident that the readers of Putnam’s Monthly were being exposed to the arguments of pro-slavery and the rebuttals to said arguments. I started to get the idea that many of the magazine’s readers were likely northerners who were anti-slavery, or at least people open-minded enough to read about criticism of certain pro-slavery arguments. Perhaps then, its readers would have held a similar perspective to mine on the intelligent nature of Babo, and received the text as abolitionist literature.
Along with the variety of articles, I found the Editorial Notes in Putnam’s Monthly to make it a very interesting source. During the length of Putnam’s run, I discovered there were numerous editors. The year Benito Cereno was published was the last year the founder, George Palmer Putnam, worked on the magazine (with the assistance of many others). In the November vol. 6 "Editorial Notes on American Literature and Reprints," the books listed give information on what the editors and readers of Benito Cereno were also reading at the time.
(Editorial Notes on "English Literature" in Special Collection's edition of Putnam's Monthly, vol. 2, 1853)
One such book mentioned is the Life and Bondage of Frederick Douglass, one of the most significant, if not the most significant, American slave narratives. Douglass is very favorably received by the editors of Putnam’s, who mention that it is remarkable “that the member of an outcast and enslaved race should accomplish his freedom, and educate himself up to an equality of intellectual and moral vigor with the leaders of the race by which he was held in bondage” (547). Having read Douglass’ Narrative myself, I believe that if the readers of Benito Cereno also read it, they would have been less likely to doubt Babo’s intelligence, and more likely to see his enslavement as unjust, since Douglass himself achieved freedom through literacy. Reading Douglass would undoubtedly have impacted how one received Benito Cereno.
While the previous two passages I mentioned displayed anti-slavery viewpoints, the stories in Putnam’s Monthly did contain some pro-slavery views, with many authors reinforcing negative stereotypes held towards Africans at the time. I was exposed to these views while reading an article titled “Negro Minstrelsy––Ancient and Modern,” which appeared in vol. 5 of Putnam’s Monthly during the month of January, 1855.
The author of this article writes about “the lightness and prevailing good humor of the negro songs,” which he believes “results directly from the character and habits of the colored race” (vol.5: 72). He asserts that “the negro is humorous rather than witty, and his comic songs consist of ludicrous images,” (77) rather than wit.
This author represents those who believed in the stereotype of the happy-go-lucky and unintelligent African, which slaveholders created to justify their actions, proclaiming they were helping a lesser, simple-minded race. While his claims are ludicrous to me, they reminded me that undoubtedly some readers of Benito Cereno believed these stereotypes.
I imagine then, that they would have perceived the slave Babo differently than I, more similar to that of Captain Delano, who never suspects Babo. Delano views Babo as another unintelligent slave, incorrectly labeling his threats towards Benito as acts of “affectionate zeal...which [have] gained for the negro the repute of making the most pleasing body servant in the world” (vol.6: 356-357). Perhaps readers influenced by these stereotypes would have considered the slave rebellion to be a result of the mismanagement of slaves; a reminder that whites must properly maintain control over them.
(Special Collection's edition of Putnam's Monthly, vol. 2, 1853)
After reading a variety of articles from Putnam’s Monthly, I realize that I cannot be certain whether Melville intended Babo to be a heroic or evil figure, nor can I conclude if he meant Benito Cereno to be an abolitionist text. I do think it's likely he made the story’s meaning purposefully vague.
What I can conclude is that the year and location it was published played a big role in the novella’s success. American citizens were ready to discuss and debate slavery in the year 1855, and Putnam’s Monthly fueled the discourse. During this time of extreme opinion, of course a text like Benito Cereno, capable of being interpreted in different ways, would become so popular. Abolitionist text or not, Benito Cereno is remarkable in the way it got its readers to think and discuss.
Does registration of a car affect insurance rates?
My fiancs father gave us this old(99) car and signed it over to her. Last year we used that as a trade in for a new(08) car. We just transferred over the plates and registration because it was easier, she absolutely hated being there for as long as we were. Now she only has her permit but is under the insurance policy. If the car was registered to me, a licensed driver, would it affect our insurance policy/rates?""
Proof of insurance in Texas?
I know this may sound irresponsible, but I have recieved two tickets in the past month in two seperate locations within Texas. The first ticket I received was for not coming to a complete stop and having my old insurance card because I left the new one which was sitting at home. I sent this ticket to my attorney to take care of. Then two weeks late I get a speeding ticket in a small district which I took care of myself right away and now taking a defensive driving course to clear it from my record. I now get news that the first ticket I obtained couldnt be cleared by my attorney and that I have to do defensive driving for the stop sign which I cant because I am already taking it and do deffered ajudification for my insurance which I had even though it was not present at the time. The question I have is, will my insurance ticket be dismissed if I show proof that I indeed had it at the time and would I be able to do deffered ajudification for the stop sign fine instead? These are the first two tickets I have ever received and I am pretty clueless on how the process works. Any help would be great.""
How to get maternity insurance?
We are wanting to start TTC, but we are a little worried about the cost of the actual birth and doctors expenses, as well as any complications that might arise. Now, we do have enough money to cover the basics, but if anything else should arise to complicate things, we're worried. We both work from home for ourselves and have looked into private health insurance, even only maternity insurance, but the plans just suck and dang expensive! Anyway, I was wondering if you knew of any way to get legitimate insurance for only me while I'm pregnant, and for the baby after its born? Some sort of affordable state insurance? Im in AZ by the way. How would i go about finding something like that? thanks!""
What is the cheapest health insurance I can get?
I'm a healthy single person with no preexisting conditions living in Washington State and am tired of paying $430/mo for COBRA. My acceptable range is $50 - $150/mo and only want it as hedge against risk of major injury. I may be travelling overseas for 3-6 months this winter and I'm wondering if: 1. I should choose something like LifeWise with 10k deductible for 3 months, just short term then let it cancel, then get different travel insurance thereafter? 2. Choose a company that does both domestic US and overseas travel coverage? 3. Let COBRA expire and just risk it? Do you have any recommendations? Know of any especially affordable deals that match this?""
How do I challenge my auto insurance company's appraisal of damages to other car in an at-fault(my) acci ?
I read-ended another car at an intersection. Both of us were stopped at a light. When the light turned green, the other car started moving and immediately slammed on brakes. In the meanwhile, I had taken my foot off brake and hit the car (at < 5mph). The other party has filed claim for $1350 for damages and also for unknown amount of bodily injury. There is not even a mark of any collision on my car (as the speed was low). My insurance company has agreed to their claim related to damages and is waiting for the exact amount for the bodily injury claim. This has been quite unfair to me and will definitely bump up my premium like crazy. Is there any way I can challenge my insurance company's appraisal of the damages ? Are there any other alternatives ? What kind of evidence would I need to furnish for the same ? We had called a Cop to report the accident. I wanted him to note that the impact was at < 5mph. However, he refused to do that saying that this would be left to insurance""
What does 'annual deductible' mean for health insurance?
Hey guys so I just want to get this straight because we are looking at purchasing new insurance... When it says Annual Deductible; $7500 does that mean after I paid that amount within the calendar year, then the insurance would kick in and start paying some of the cost? Is this still true with any type of doctor visit like routine checkups and stuff? It also says this regarding that Member pays $30 Copay or 30% after deductible (applies to the 3 office visit copay limit) . Can someone give me an explanation? It doesn't seem like this is a good option if I would have to pay $7500 before any insurance kicks in right?""
Any suggestions on how to lower my car insurance?
I'm an 18 year old female driver, and about a month ago I got into a bad car accident due to a malfunction. When this occurred, the insurance and everything else was under my dad's name. Now that I bought a new car, my dad wants everything to be under my name because he doesn't want to get screwed over with high insurance and such, but the quote I got from Travelers (which was the insurance my dad was under)was around $800 a month, to insure my 2007 Honda civic, and my job doesn't pay enough to afford that. I don't want to depend on my parents financially in any way (they are willing to, but I just feel like at 21, I shouldn't be their responsibility anymore) so I always worry something would happen to me and they would have to pay hospital bills for me. I can't afford paying a very high deductible or a high monthly quote. Any hope for me? ..or should I move to Canada?""
Pay out of pocket for my car or go through my insurance company?
I live on a hill. Last week, in a quirky weather situation, the street I live on got super-slick just long enough for my 2000 Toyota Camry to go into a 300' free-slide down the hill and crash into a curb and a tree. It was a one-car accident, no one was injured. The repairman can only give me a rough estimate at this time but he thinks it'd cost about $1500 to repair using old body parts, although he says it could cost more if he finds more damage as he goes along--in that case he thinks it might cost up to $2,000 to patch it up out of pocket. I asked him about the pros and cons of paying out of pocket vs. going through insurance in my particular case. He said that if I chose to go through insurance--which would mean getting a USAA adjuster out and all--that he was thinking it would probably cost $2500 to repair, maybe more if it turned out there was more damage that he could see at this time. But he pointed out that I'd have to pay the deductible (which I think is $500 for my car, not sure) and that my insurance rates would go up. But then you'd end up with a new-looking car. [as opposed to a patched-up looking car]. My husband absolutely wants to pay out of pocket--he does not want to involve our auto insurance company, saying, The insurance company is only for the big accidents. But I'd like to keep this car for several more years if I can because there's no car out there that I like better, so I'm wondering if maybe it might be worth going through the insurance company. Here's a little more information: My 2000 Toyota Camry has 115,000 miles on it and has been very reliable over the years. The motor wasn't damaged and, in fact the car is already driving well again except that one headlight and blinker are broken. There is, of course, body damage to the front and hood, plus a 6 crack over the left back tire (not very deep), which occurred when I backed out of the tree, slid again, and hit the curb on the opposite side of the street. Re: Our insurance situation? We (me and my 3 driving age children) had a string of costly minivan accidents in the 1990s: 1. one in 1997 when my daughter totaled my van, and got sued for injuries by 2 people in the other car (the lawsuit was settled many years ago but it dragged out for years). 2. one by me, a one-car accident, no injuries, our insurance company paid for the damage minus the deductible 3. 2 accidents caused by other drivers, so my insurance company didn't have to pay any damages--I don't know if USAA takes accidents caused by other people into consideration or not. 4. My son totaled my van in 2000 [which is why my current car is a year 2000]. So we have not called upon our insurance company for any expenses for almost 11 years now. Regarding traffic tickets? I got one 3-4 years ago for speeding--35 or 40 mph in a 25 mph zone-. If my points from this ticket have expired by now (not sure), then there are no other points on our record. Our children are now out of the nest and only one of them borrows our car when she comes to visit once every month or two. I put less than 10,000 miles/year on my car for work and vacations. We live in PA. So my question is this: Given the age of the car, amount of damage, etc., is it worth going through our insurance company to get the car fixed rather than pay OOP--or would going through insurance raise our insurance premiums so much that it wouldn't be worth it?""
IHG Is Finally Adding Kimpton to Its Loyalty Program
Nearly three years later, IHG is finally merging Kimpton's loyalty program into its own. Pictured here is the new Kimpton Hotel Born Denver. Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants
Skift Take: Whatever IHG ultimately does as it proceeds with this loyalty program merger, the No. 1 thing they don't want to do is to anger Kimpton Karma elites. We also wonder: Will new IHG CEO Keith Barr start letting IHG's most elite loyalty members get access to his phone number too?
— Deanna Ting
It’s been 1,008 days since InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) acquired Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants, the company that jumpstarted the boutique hotels movement in the U.S., for a cool $430 million.
And in those thousand or so days, there hasn’t been much news to report on the two entities’ respective loyalty programs, both of which have continued to operate separately — until now.
Friday morning, IHG announced that by early 2018, Kimpton Karma Rewards will become a part of IHG Rewards Club, forming a combined loyalty program with a single points-based reward system.
When the combination of the two programs is completed next year, all Kimpton Karma Rewards members will be automatically enrolled into IHG Rewards Club, which is considered to be the world’s largest hotel loyalty program by membership numbers with more than 100 million members total. IHG wouldn’t divulge exactly how many members are in the Kimpton Karma Rewards program, or what kind of overlap there is in membership between the two programs.
Kimpton Karma members will then have access to IHG’s total portfolio of more than 5,200 hotels in nearly 100 countries worldwide. IHG Rewards Club members will also now be able to earn and redeem points at Kimpton’s more than 60 hotels in North America and Europe. IHG Rewards Club current status will be recognized and members will receive all applicable in-hotel benefits beginning in early 2018.
“IHG Rewards Club members who stay at Kimpton hotels will receive 10 points for every qualified dollar spent on room revenue,” Susanna Freer Epstein, SVP of global loyalty marketing for IHG, said. “Elite members will receive bonus points on top of that. Any valid Karma Free Night Rewards will be converted to IHG Rewards Club Reward Nights and will remain valid in members’ new IHG Rewards Club account, with existing expiration dates.”
IHG also noted that Karma member tier levels will “map” to IHG Rewards Club membership levels, and any activity accrued toward an earned night will be converted into IHG Rewards Club points. “Active Karma members will slot into IHG Rewards Club tiers (Club, Gold, Platinum, and Spire Elite),” Freer Epstein said.
In a statement, IHG said: “Kimpton Karma members will enjoy the ability to accelerate higher tier status and earn more benefits with incentives and promotions that are personalized for them. Members can also earn points through IHG partners for everyday activities like renting a car, ordering flowers, shopping, dining and more.” Kimpton’s loyalty program does not have its own branded credit card program like IHG Rewards Club does.
Kimpton Karma members will be automatically enrolled in IHG® Rewards Club in early 2018, unlocking benefits to earn and redeem at nearly 5,300 hotels around the world, including the new InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown, the Kimpton De Witt in Amsterdam, and Hualuxe Zhangjiakou in China, pictured here. Why This Makes a Lot of Sense
Today’s hospitality mergers and acquisitions are often powered by two driving forces — scale and loyalty. That was certainly true in the case of Marriott’s $13.3 billion purchase of Starwood Hotels & Resorts in 2016, and that also rings true in IHG’s case with Kimpton.
It would have been a huge lost opportunity if IHG had failed to bring Kimpton’s loyalty members into its portfolio. While the acquisition has added some scale to IHG, the loyalty aspect is even more compelling. Even though IHG has the largest number of loyalty members to date, without including Kimpton’s Karma members, bringing those consumers into the IHG family is crucial to keeping the entire IHG brand ecosystem in healthy condition. Loyalty drives direct bookings and, more importantly, it helps hotel companies know more about their guests so they can continually improve on their guest experiences.
When Skift spoke to Kimpton CEO Mike DeFrino earlier this year, he said the two loyalty programs would be combined by 2018.
“What we hope to do, and what we’re planning on doing, is maintaining the ethos of that loyalty program, that Kimpton Karma program, and marrying it with the currency of IHG’s reward program, so our goal is to have the best of both worlds and be able to provide that individual treatment and sort of specialization, which I think people expect in boutique hotels, perhaps a lot more than they do from the big brands,” he said. “So, together with Kimpton Karma and IHG currency, we’ll have a tremendous reach.”
He also said IHG’s global scale would help Kimpton grow even more, especially after the two loyalty programs become one.
“The thing is, since Kimpton has never been outside the United States, people don’t really know Kimpton in China or know Kimpton even in Europe very well, and we think that this will give us some street cred outside of North America,” DeFrino said. “And so, when people are booking from Shanghai and they see that it’s an affiliate, that Kimpton is affiliated with IHG, they’re going to feel good about booking that. We also think that those travelers, especially inbound travel from China, is going to be more and more interested in staying at lifestyle boutique hotels or whatever we’re calling them today. So, we think we’re in the right place with sitting on a strong credible loyalty program and currency and with the Kimpton point of view and style and design and restaurants and bars, we think that sort of is the one-two punch we need.”
That strategy is already playing out. On Wednesday, Kimpton announced it plans to open three properties in Southeast Asia and Greater China. As Kimpton becomes an even bigger and more global brand, it makes perfect sense to house it under the IHG loyalty umbrella.
Why IHG Needs to Tread Carefully Here
Combining Kimpton Karma and IHG Rewards Club into a single program is easier said than done, however, and IHG will have to be very careful not to upset die-hard Kimpton Karma rewards members, especially those with elite-tier status, also known as Kimpton Karma InnerCircle. (Likewise, Marriott is also contending with this as it works to integrate its three loyalty programs into one, without upsetting Starwood Preferred Guest members.)
IHG said that Karma InnerCircle will continue to exist at Kimpton hotels and that it “will be grandfathered” into the newly combined program in 2018.
“[Kimpton Karma] members who earned InnerCircle by the end of 2017 will maintain their InnerCircle status, within Spire Elite,” Freer Epstein explained. “That means for Kimpton’s most loyal members, they will continue to enjoy InnerCircle perks when staying at Kimpton hotels. Things like the highly personalized welcome amenities, the new hotel reward night at Kimpton hotels and chef tastings at Kimpton restaurants will continue to be a part of the Kimpton experience. Moving into 2019, to qualify for InnerCircle in 2019, members will need to earn Spire Elite and receive an invitation into InnerCircle.”
A hallmark of the Kimpton Karma program was the deeply personal way members interacted with it. Kimpton Karma members have to call a Karma Rewards Advisor to redeem a reward night and those who qualify for InnerCircle status even receive a phone number they can use to call Kimpton CEO Mike DeFrino directly. There’s also a Raid the Bar feature which lets Karma members receive a $10 credit ($15 credit in New York City) to spend at the restaurant bar or in-room minibar during eligible stays.
Freer Epstein noted: “We’ve also preserved Kimpton Karma’s most-loved perks, like Raid the Bar (for Gold, Platinum and Spire Elite) and the $30 spa credit. We think Karma Rewards members are going to be really happy to know their most beloved perks and the highly personalized Kimpton experience will remain, while at the same time, will gain access to a whole new world of benefits that IHG Rewards Club introduces.”
While Kimpton Karma members will no doubt benefit from access to more hotels in more places when the programs merge, there’s still a chance they could lose that personalized loyalty experience in the process, especially when they stay in non-Kimpton branded IHG properties.
On the flip side, however, it appears Kimpton Karma members will benefit from no more blackout dates and the ability to redeem points online instead of having to call, as noted by Kathleen Reidenbach, Kimpton’s chief commercial officer, in a press statement.
Reidenbach added: “With the increased portfolio of hotels – 80 times more hotels than what we’ve been able to offer – our members can now travel all around the world earning and redeeming points, including new international Kimpton destinations. What’s equally exciting is that members will continue to enjoy the highly personalized experience that Kimpton delivers, while gaining access to the rich benefits of IHG Rewards Club. It’s really a win-win.”
The Future of IHG Rewards Club
When asked if IHG is planning to unveil more changes to its loyalty in the coming year, in the same vein as its peers Hyatt and Hilton have done in the past year with a larger focus on experiences, flexibility in points usage/sharing, and alternative sources for redemption (like Hilton’s Amazon tie-in), Freer Epstein said:
“Clearly, this is an important milestone as we’re offering more brands in new destinations to our combined membership moving ahead. IHG Rewards Club offers countless great opportunities to earn points and redeem rewards — from Reward Nights at IHG hotels worldwide to music downloads, electronics, gift cards and more, via its online global redemption catalogue. And we are always looking at ways to enhance IHG Rewards Club.”
MY DIET EXPERIENCE!
MY DIET EXPERIENCE! I am a 53 year old diabetic with a left foot toe amputation and a right foot below the knee amputation. I have had many diet experiences. Lost over 100 lbs several times in my life only to gain it back an then some. In 2005 my maximum weight was 527lbs. At that time I was hospitalized for congestive heart failure. From that point I started doing a low carb high protein diet. I cheeted often but still lost weight. I got down to around 430 lbs. Around 2010 and could go no farther so I kinda gave up. My high sugar caused me to loose feeling in my feet. I stepped on something that cut the underside of my left foot and did not know it. Long story short. My left little toe was amputated. After that I studied the vegetarian life style. It promised me that it would reverse diabetes. Nope! Made it worse and still did not loose weight. Keep in mind, I am morbidly obese. And what they don’t tell you is any type of carbs will always run a type 2 morbidly obese persons sugar up. In this time I tried great stuff like LIMU, TEN SPRAYS, COCO EXTRACTS, WHITE KIDNEY BEAN, GINCO BALBOA , ALL VEGAN NO FAT DIETS ECT… NOTE* you will be able to get some of these on this site and they are GREAT. The fornamed products did in many ways help me, but, The end results was sores that would not heal. Around 2014 I got a sore on my small right toe. The sore went down to the visable bone then healed up. While open the bone got infected. Two years later I was sick as a dog. I could barely lift my finger to do anything. Again long story short…my left foot was amputated below the knee. While in the hospital I started researching alternative medicines. What the Dr’s were telling me was making me worse. I found out that protein raises your sugar as well as carbs. The only thing that does not raise your sugar is “good” fats. I found out that eating those 6 meals a day raised my sugar and ultimately my insulin 6 times a day. I found out the only true way to loose weight was to not raise your insulin so often. So I researched ways to lower my insulin. Intermittent fasting! I found out if you intermittent fast your body has time to heal and rebuild itself without causing you to go into starvation mode. I found out that even though you are not eating for 16 hours a day it does not draw from your muscles but only from fat. As a matter of a fact it raises your good growth hormones over 1000%. I mostly do a 16/8 IF. I FAST ONLY DRINKING WATER FOR 16 HOURS THEN I HAVE A 8 HOUR EATING WINDOW. During the 8 hours I eat twice. No snacking. So, no matter what I eat my sugar and my insulin only goes up two times a day instead of 6 or more. I have noticed in a huge way this has helped my sores heal much much quicker. I also sleep better and feel so much better. Now I am just getting into LCHF! Low Carb High Fat! I am just transitioning into this phase of my diet which is going to put me into a ketosis state and I am looking forward to loosing so much more weight and getting very healthy. No more body parts will be cut off. If you are morbidly obese and can’t seem to loose no matter what you do. Take advantage of this site and tell your story so others can follow your progress. Even if you only have a few pounds to loose take advantage…tell your story. By the way I’ve been intermittent Fasting for 6 months and my weight is now 369 as of July, 6, 2017. My A1C is around 12. My blood pressure was normal. My cholesterol is a little high. I go back to the Dr. around a month from now. I will post results at that time.
1. Thoughts On Oxalates? [3:02]
Alex says:
What is your perspective on oxalates? Is there any merit to what people like Dr William Shaw, Sally Norton, and Elliot Overton say about the evils of oxalates? or can we all keep eating spinach and almonds? Could this be the explanation as to why some people who go full carnivore benefit from eliminating all greens?
2. Living WELL to 100 and Beyond [10:05]
Paul says:
Robb and Nicki, I am definitely one of the original 6 listeners and credit you many times for changing my life and educating me to the point that I helped other people change their lives. Ok I am 62 in very good shape and have a smoking hot younger wife that I would live to make it to our 50th wedding anniversary, which will make me 107. So the question is what test do I do now to make sure I have the best chance to achieve this goal and hopefully correct if something is wrong now?
3. Eating For Olympic Weightlifting [13:15]
Jake says:
Robb,
Thank you for the podcast its great. I know your very busy but I was wondering how you would suggest approaching a healthy diet for olympic weightlifting? I’m 35, 5ft9in 185lbs and around 18% body fat( this is a rough estimate using ketogains website). I want to compete but not looking to sacrifice my health, and would like to lift into my old age. You mentioned that you competed in powerlifting when you were younger and I thought maybe you would have some insight into the subject. I currently intermittent fast roughly 14hrs everyday. My diet is protein from variety of meats,carbs from lots of fresh veggies, fats from nuts, coconut and olive oil. No sugars unless family holiday. My goal is to lose some body fat but maintain my strength. I tried to go full keto, no carbs, and my strength plummets. Thanks again, sorry for such a long question.
4. Low Carb & Sleep [16:18]
Angel says:
Hi Robb,
Thanks for answering our questions! When I eat low carb, I tend to wake up at 3am and have a hard time falling back asleep. However, if I have some carbs (i.e. a small bowl of rice or a sweet potato) during dinner, I generally sleep through the night and wake up naturally a little after 6am. I usually go to bed around 10pm, and eat dinner around 6pm.
The problem is, when I eat carbs during dinner, I gain weight overtime. Eating low carb helps me lose weight. Is there a reason for the interrupted sleep eating low carb? I searched online and some people say it’s due to noradrenaline. I don’t know what that is and I am wondering how i can improve my sleep while eating low carb? Thank you very much for your knowledge!
Angel
Robb: Well babe, nothing compares to you.
Nicki: All right. Let’s see, let’s jump in with our first question from, actually Wade’s Army, do you want to tell folks about Wade’s Army?
Robb: Oh man, our dear friends John and Kate Welbourn, they had twin girls, seven years ago.
Nicki: Yup.
Robb: And the girls were friends with another-
Nicki: One of Kate’s really good friends from college.
Robb: Yeah, well you know this story better than I do.
Nicki: Yeah, one of Kate’s really good friends from college had a set of boy/girl twins. And the boy, Wade, ended up with neuroblastoma. So they started Wade’s Army to fundraise and get awareness around neuroblastoma, and it’s a wonderful wonderful non-profit, and every fall they do a big fundraiser and workout.
Robb: And the neuroblastoma people are pretty cool. When I was first approached to help with this I wrote a bit of a critical email saying that not enough effort is put into prevention and investigation of alternative therapies like hyperbaric oxygen, ketogenic diets and whatnot. And I got an email back from these folks and they said they were wide open as far as diversifying what they looked at, all that they were interested in was moving the ball forward on this stuff. So they appear to be really wonderful people, even at that neuroblastoma research side of the story.
Robb: And then John and Kate are super passionate about it. It’s one of the only philanthropic things that I feel comfortable contributing to it at this point, everything else seems like kind of a-
Nicki: You never know-
Robb: Smoke and mirrors deal, so yeah.
Nicki: Also your money doesn’t go exactly where you think it’s going to go, but it definitely does with these guys. So anyway, just thought I’d explain the shirt.
Robb: So check out Wade’s Army if you feel inclined to donate to them, please do.
Nicki: Yup. Okay, we’ll jump into our first question from Alex on oxalates. “Rob, what is your perspective on oxalates, is there any merit to what people like Dr. Williams Shaw, Sally Norton and Elliot Overton say about the evils of oxalates, or can we all keep eating spinach and almonds? Could this be the explanation as to why some people who go full carnivore benefit from eliminating all greens?”
Robb: So maybe the easiest thing to answer there is the last point, yeah this is almost certainly one of the reasons why folks that go full carnivore finally address that niggling underlying issue that keto and paleo, although benefiting sometimes to some degree, doesn’t fully resolve. And it’s interesting, you could make the case that we should be able to handle oxalates just fine, and when you look at some of the gut microbiota of the [hudsa 00:03:07], for example, they have oxalate metabolizing bacteria. And then there’s also issues around adequate calcium intake and can mitigate some of the deleterious effects of oxalate, basically keeping it sequestered in the feces and it moves out instead of getting moved in.
Robb: But the results are the reality that we should have bacteria that can help us deal with oxalates. Generally in westernized populations we don’t. And this is some of the conundrum that I think we face at large is, whatever reason, the way that our westernized diet is altering the gut microbiota, we are losing the ability to deal with more and more foods. And to some degree like keto, low carb, zero carb, carnivore, it’s kind of like the last spot that people end up that they can still deal with things. And it seems like fruits to some degree is less of a problem. Some things like white rice or different starchy components may be for different people are less problematic. Mushrooms may be less problematic.
Robb: But a lot of these things that are historically thought of as being health foods and super foods like spinach and kale and all that stuff, they really cause a lot of problems for some people. And it’s interesting again when we think about this from the evidence-based nutrition folks and it fits your macros folks, or what have you. We really should be able to deal with this stuff better than what we do. Nobody, as far as I can tell right now, is entirely clear about how we can restore the gut microbiota.
Robb: I was at the evolutionary medicine conference that [inaudible 00:04:57] puts on each year, and Erika Sonenberg from the Sonenberg Lab at Stanford was there and we were talking about this stuff. And there’s kind of a reality that when you look at the gut microbiota over generations, and they’ve done this in mice and we’ve also seen this in humans. It’s getting more and more narrow as time goes on, which is not good. It’s a multi generational problem. This is the point that I wanted to make about the, it fits your macros folks and some of the evidence-based nutrition folks, is that it appears that any inclusion of westernized foods begins and accelerates the loss of gut microbiotic diversity.
Robb: So this whole notion that you can have a little bit here and there, maybe a fucking lie, or it may be completely misinformed, ill informed if we’re thinking about the gut microbiota as like this extra genomic information processing center where we’ve got more genetic diversity in our gut than we have in the totality of humanity. And that stuff is being lost over time, and there’s a case to be made that no amount of westernized foods are really safe in this regard. I’m not stating this as fact, I’m stating this as a little bit of a hypothesis. But if the hypothesis is true, that the inclusion of virtually any amount of westernized foods starts moving us in a direction of a more curtailed gut microbiota, then what the fuck are we going to do about that?
Robb: And how are people going to modify their recommendations according to that information? And again, the information that comes out of the Sonenberg Lab is very interesting in this regard, and there’s definitely a lot of people that, myself included, like somebody held my feet to the fire about all the almonds I was eating. And fucking lo and behold man, I think some of the final kind of gut related stuff that I had was from eating these nuts. And I’ve tinkered with soaking and sprouting and getting the ghost of [inaudible 00:07:10] priced to lay hands on my sprouted fucking stuff. And it’s better, but it’s not great. Like I do better without them.
Robb: And so I’m kind of in this mode of carnivore plus coffee and fermented food. It’s kind of where I’m at and doing really well with that. Like I feel really good, my digestion is good. But it’s interesting, I’ve shifted to a more curtailed, less diverse food intake, but I feel better. But then there’s an argument to be made that I’m probably tuning my gut microbiota to a more narrow frequency band, but I’m just stuck at this point. I don’t know what else to do, I’ve done like every probiotic prebiotic. I won’t name any of them because I don’t want to throw them under the bus, because it didn’t work for me doesn’t mean they won’t work for someone else.
Robb: But it’s a really interesting complex topic. And I know I’m getting totally out in the weeds here, but on the one hand I think that we have people maybe in the ancestral health scene, some people that sell a degree of knowledge on this topic that is bullshit. Like they can claim this kind of magic divination that oh if you have this profile then you need to do X, Y, Z. And I think that that’s horse shit. But then on the flip side I think that the evidence-based nutrition folks are dismissive of this topic to the point of eventual legal ramifications or something. Just moral ramifications if nothing else. Like they too approach this story with this remarkable degree of certitude when it’s a brand new topic, there’s so much more that we don’t know than what we do know.
Robb: And I think at the end of the day the most important thing that folks can do is have kind of a rubric for if you are sick, what is a way that we can get you healthy? And then we start trying to iterate and move from there. That was a short question with a very very very very very long answer.
Nicki: All right. Our next question is from Paul on living well to 100 and beyond. “Robb and Nicki, I’m definitely one of the original six listeners and credit you many times for changing my life and educating me to the point that I helped other people change their lives. Okay, I’m 62, in very good shape, and have a smoking hot younger wife that I would love to make it to our 50th wedding anniversary, which would make me 107. So the question is, what test do I do now to make sure I have the best chance to achieve this goal and hopefully correct it if something is wrong?”
Robb: Man. What do you think? What would your-
Nicki: Tests?
Robb: Yeah. Singular test. So I could make a case for the whole LPRI score, to look at where one’s insulin resistance versus sensitivity metabolic health, metabolic flexibility. It also gives you insight into systemic inflammation, mainly from GlycA and a couple of other elements in there. So this is something we use in the advanced testing within the clinic here in Reno. It’s incredibly valuable for being able to assign kind of a metabolic risk number on folks. And if we get an improvement … Let’s say the higher the number the kind of worse things are.
Robb: If somebody does the LPRI score and they get a number of 85, and we move them to a 45, almost from like a life insurance actuarial table perspective, we can assign a risk mitigation based off that change, which is basically the underpinning of most of the work that we’ve done. So as an external test that LPRI score I think could be really really valuable for establishing a baseline and trying to track that over time.
Robb: Now beyond that, from my perspective, I-
Nicki: Muscle mass, like how much muscle mass are you carrying?
Robb: Muscle mass. Yeah. And some of these benchmarks of a double body weight deadlift. A body weight and a half back squat, body weight and some change bench. Maybe a body weight standing press. Your weight plus 50 to 72% of your weight in a weighted chin or pull-up. Maintaining muscle mass and then maintaining some degree of metabolic engine both in the aerobic and the anaerobic areas, I think is about as good a bet is what you’re going to get with that as far as some reasonably objective measures that would correlate with effective aging.
Robb: It’s a great question, and people can complicate this stuff. Like I used to be a little bit of a fan of looking at telomeres length and then some recent research that I read really poured some cold water down my back on that one. And so that’s interesting, so the whole telomeres length story is not nearly as compelling as what I once thought it was.
Nicki: Okay. Paul, you’ll have to check-in in 10 years increments and let us know how you’re doing.
Robb: Yeah, keep us posted man. Yeah.
Nicki: Our next question is from Jake on Olympic weightlifting. “Robb, thank you for the podcast it’s great. I know you’re very busy, but I was wondering how you would suggest approaching a healthy diet for Olympic weightlifting? I’m 35, 5’9″, 185 pounds, and around 18% body fat. This is a rough estimate using the keto gains website. I want to compete but not looking to sacrifice my health and would like to lift into my old age. You mentioned that you competed in power lifting when you were younger, and I thought maybe you would have some insight into the subject. I currently intermittent fast roughly 14 hours every day, my diet is protein from a variety of meats, carbs from lots of fresh veggies, fats from nuts, coconut and olive oil. No sugars unless family holiday. My goal is to lose some body fat but maintain my strength. I tried to go full keto, no carbs, and my strength plummets. Thanks again, sorry for such a long question.”
Robb: Man, so what are the main questions with this? Like he wants to compete, he wants to lean out.
Nicki: How would you structure a diet for weightlifting such that he’s obviously strong and able to perform.
Robb: Right.
Nicki: And can lose some body fat.
Robb: Yeah, so on the keto topic, I would venture that Jake probably didn’t get enough sodium and electrolytes in general. There is a reality that the first-
Nicki: Well and he said, no carbs too, so there’s also he could potentially have some carbs post training.
Robb: Yeah. I think there’s different ways of skinning that for sure. One thing is if you do go keto, you got to be very aggressive in supplementing electrolytes in particular, sodium. Beyond that, but keto is by no means the only route to losing body fat. And so you could still use the keto gains macro nutrient calculator to help you establish a baseline of caloric intake, and then you just tweak it a little bit. Like if you make sure that you do the keto gains recommended protein intake which is about a gram, gram and a half of protein per pound lean body mass. And then it’s going to make a recommendation around your carbs and fat. The carbs are going to be set automatically at about 25 grams per day. If you want to add … Let’s say you want to run 100 grams of carbs a day, so you’re going to add 75 grams of carbs, you’re going to delete approximately about 30 grams of fat.
Robb: Like you could do the numbers on that, but that’s kind of the approximate ballpark on that. In that way you’ve got to really slick way of quickly figuring out what a recommended caloric intake is, make sure you’re benchmarked on your protein, and then just adjust the carbs and fat appropriate to what you’re doing. And you would still probably benefit from an eye towards proper electrolyte supplementation.
Nicki: Okay. Thanks Jake, our next question is on low carb and sleep from Angel. “Hi Robb, thanks for answering our questions. When I eat low carb I tend to wake up at 3 am and have a hard time falling back asleep. However, if I have some carbs, like a small bowel of rice or a sweet potato during dinner I generally sleep through the night and wake up naturally a little after 6 am. I usually go to bed around 10 pm and eat dinner around 6 pm. The problem is, when I eat carbs during dinner I gain weight over time.”
Nicki: Overtime, or over time? I don’t know. “Eating low carb helps me lose weight. Is there a reason for the interrupted sleep while eating low carb? I searched online and some people say it’s due to noradrenaline, I don’t know what that is and I’m wondering how I can improve my sleep while eating low carb. Thank you very much for your knowledge.”
Robb: Do you want to tackle this one?
Nicki: I mean the sodium one is the one that’s popping out for me.
Robb: Yeah, for sure. When folks shift lower carb even from basic paleo type carb levels they definitely notice an increase in adrenaline, noradrenaline, cortisol, these hormones are being released kind of in a compensatory effort to retain more sodium. It’s kind of an indirect work around, but it’s registering as a stress. The low sodium environment, there’s a downward spiral where you shed sodium, then you shed potassium, and then all hell kind of breaks loose. And so this is another scenario where really being on point with electrolytes is critical and you have to hit that at least five grams of sodium plus the potassium and magnesium each day.
Robb: What we find though is that if folks are generally eating a whole food based diet, then you pretty well on magnesium and potassium. They might need a little bit of supplemental help there. But they’re really deficient in the sodium. And so this is one of these things that just, it’s like magic. If you are staying on point with the electrolyte supplementation, you either do bouillon, you do a home brew, or you get something like Element and it fixes this problem remarkably quickly.
Nicki: Mm-hmm (affirmative).
Robb: Yeah.
Nicki: Okay. So electrolytes, Angel, and then report back, let us know how you do.
Robb: Yeah, that’d be great.
Nicki: Okay, final question for this week is from Mike on the paleo diet. Mike says, “Going back to your first book, what are the main things you would revise or add if you ever did a revision?”
Robb: Well the funny thing is we did do a revision. There is a volume two-
Nicki: The paperback.
Robb: -it’s a paperback version.
Nicki: Just updated slightly.
Robb: I mean there wasn’t a massive amount that we tweaked. So I had some pretty aggressive fish oil recommendations in the first book, which I modified over time. Thank you for the people that burned me at the stake about getting that one wrong, I was largely following people like Barry Sears and other folks, that information seemed credible at the time. On that fatty acid…
Nicki: The omega three profile in grass fed beef?
Robb: Yeah. So to that fatty acid topic, Diana Rogers and I had been working on this sustainability book and movie called Sacred Cow. And it’s interesting because we’ve had pretty massive pushback from the vegan community. The vegans. Which is not surprising at all, but I tell you one of the more surprising places that we get a shocking degree of pushback, and very vigorous and very ill informed unfortunately, is the really go getter paleo ancestral health crowd that insist that grass fed meat is the only grass fed, grass finish is the only way to go.
Robb: And Diana and I tackle this in the book and we’re also going to be doing a series of blog posts and other support material where I really dig into the literature on this. But the reality is that, so as a baseline, the bulk of ruminant animals, whether it’s cows, sheep, goats, camel, whatever. They’re grass fed for the most part, there is some grain finishing. Now, the thing is, is that I probably am suffer … What do they say, like when you raise kids like you get back what you were…
Nicki: You get back what you put out as a kid.
Robb: -as a kid. And so I’m sure I sowed a lot of the seeds of my frustration on this now. Because early in the story there was a sense that the fanning acid profiles of grass fed meat were remarkably better with regards to the omega three, omega six balance than grain finished meat. Around 2009, 2010 though, Mat LaLonde really did the deep dive into this stuff, and he was like, no man that’s not the case at all. There’s very little difference when you get right down to it.
Robb: And I got into a pissing match on the interwebs, on social media, shocker, with a woman who is a master’s degree in chemical engineering, and she insisted that there was a difference in the protein.
Nicki: Grass fed vs grain fed.
Robb: Of grass fed versus grain finished meat. And I said, show me one paper. And she went through all of this magic and mysticism and flailing and all kinds of appeal to odd authorities, but could not produce one thing that suggested that the protein content, nor really the fatty acid content was significantly different between grass finished and grain finished meat.
Robb: Now from a sustainability perspective, there’s a great argument for doing as much grass finishing as possible, but even in that story, there’s a reality that to the degree that we do continue to grow wheat or corn or rice or whatever, the leftovers in that scenario is not technically grass, but it is something that animals can be finished on. And it is used that way, and it’s a very smart utilization of resources because otherwise that is cellulosic material just builds up and it degrades very slowly. It maybe oxidizes instead of composts and all that type of stuff.
Robb: So there’s really compelling reasons to have a middle ground in this story, and not be complete zealots about it. There is no compelling case from a health perspective that the fatty acid profiles are different. And so that’s a big one from the book that I probably sowed a lot of erroneous information really advocating for grass fed meant, but the reason why I’ve been advocating for grass fed meat, even with the knowledge about there’s not that big of a difference from the health perspective. There is a significant story there from a resource management sustainability perspective.
Robb: So that’s going to be a fun one to unpack over the next 10 years.
Nicki: So the fish oil, the fatty acid profile in grass finish versus grain finished beef. Anything else?
Robb: No, otherwise, paleo solution was pretty on point. You know, making recommendations around sleep, getting out in the sun, lifting some weights, doing some sprinting, not letting your internal dialogue eat you up, that whole the stress chapter. Like the finance piece and everything. So that stuff’s kind of stood the test of time, and honestly got recycled and updated significantly in Wired to Eat. Like it’s still those things are kind of … I would argue kind of universalities in this story, yeah.
Nicki: Okay.
Robb: Is that it?
Nicki: I think that’s our last question for this week, yeah. Thank you guys again for your questions, you can submit them at Robbwolf.com on the contact page.
Robb: @dasrobbwolf for Instagram, which is about the only place I’m hanging out these days.
Nicki: We drip these questions out there. Also on YouTube, this is episode is sponsored by Drink Element, the electrolyte drink mix that has the sodium that you need if you’re on a low carb or ketogenic diet.
Robb: It has what plants crave.
Nicki: Brawndo.
Robb: Brawndo.
Nicki: Thanks guys.
