I believe ‘Lifes Rich Pageant’ and ‘Document’ would be more cohesive if ‘Begin the Begin’ and ‘King of Birds’ switched places. Time travel isn’t possible so obviously there’s no way of changing this, but they seem a little out of place on their respective albums. ‘Begin the Begin’ and ‘Finest Worksong’ are siblings, and such is the case with ‘The Flowers of Guatemala’ and ‘King of Birds’.

I don’t recall the word “alternative” being applied to music until the late 80s or early 90s, but I think REM was really the first alternative band. They took rock and #postpunk and #newwave and made something new out of it. Un mois est vite passé. Une vie est vite pliée aussi. À ce rythme, ce serait pas mal de savoir reconnaître les bons jours des mauvais, de deviner que certains mauvais jours ont du bon & que derrière de bons jours se cachent parfois des cruautés bien déguisées, des poignards dans nos tendres dos, des putains de déceptions (si haut qu’on monte…). Il faudrait vivre averti.e. Vivre vigilant.e., telle Chimène : “Et dans ce grand bonheur, je crains un grand revers…" Quoi que, je m’y connais, je me soucie très bien, mais ô surprise, ça ne préserve de rien. Un mois est vite passé. Et je n’ai plus de mots. Il est parti avec. Les mots me manquent, il me manque. Je ne sais plus où j’habite. Enfin, si, dans un mois, ce sera ici. Une nouvelle vue. Sans couchers de soleil, seulement des aurores, que je verrai donc peu. Un nouveau chez-moi encore trop loin de l’océan mais qui m’éloigne de ces rues où je le vois surgir tout le temps. Et qui, "partant", tourne la page sur 21 ans d’encroûtage, la faute à Paris, la faute sans doute aussi à ces déménagements de l’enfance que j’ai associés à autant de trucs perdus, cassés & de séparations tragiques. À éviter. Alors je goûte à l’abandon comme à un alcool très fort, radical. Un shot d’oubli & de remise à zéro. Voilà, c’est ici que je vais recommencer ; enfin, "recommencer”… Ne pas placer la barre symbolique si haut. Ou alors à la Beckett : "Essayer. Rater. Essayer encore. Rater encore. Rater mieux." Pas d’ex nihilo possible, j’ai des bagages lourds (il m’en coûte de les déménager), même si je vais partir en laissant quelques cartons à la déchèterie. Arguably one of the best grammatically incorrect pop albums ever. There are plenty of song titles that play fast and loose with grammar, but few bands have the chutzpah to blatantly ignore these rules in the album title. But R.E.M. are that kind of mould-breaking band. Who needs punctuation anyway This is R.E.M’s fourth album, and it’s a bit of a stepping stone from the grungier, swampy sound of their earlier albums, before they hit proper ‘hit song status’ (albeit only for college students listening to indie radio) with their follow up, Document. I like Pageant, I like its references and subversions to the traditional sound of Southern Rock; I like its ecological concerns (in Cuyahoga and Fall On Me in particular); and I like the fact that they start the LP with a play on Cole Porter’s Begin the Beguine. Given that I was more familiar with Porter’s work than R.E.M’s when I first heard this album sometime in my late teens, this was much appreciated. Fall On Me is arguably the best ‘pop song’ from the album, and was also the first single, though it only barely scraped into the US Top 100.
