GUYS I DID A BALLISTER X AMBROSIUS ANGST SEARCH ON AO3 AND:

When The Smoke Clears, I Will Be Here

When the last sparks of Nimona's light faded, Ballister collapsed among the ashes. To his rescue comes Ambrosius, who is ready to scoop him up and take him home. Everything hurts in Ballister's world: his heart… His body. He let's himself be vulnerable around the man he once loved, for the sake of all he's just been through.

Two absolute MUST WATCH older movies for genderqueer folks (and really ALL queer folks):

1. To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything, Julie Newmar! (1995)

- Happy ending

This one is an all time favourite of mine. It's funny, sweet, light-hearted, sincere, and has a happy ending.

It was so unbelievably ahead of its time, too. Do you understand what a big deal it was for Patrick Swayze and Wesley Snipes to play these roles? The IDEALS of masculinity, the idols of all the boys in their time, and they starred as Lady Noxeema and Miss Vida?

And they took it SERIOUSLY. Snipe's portrayal of Noxeema's simple, genuine joy in her performance. Swayze's gentle portrayal of Vida's sincere relief in being her true self (god, but the look on her face when she saw herself in the mirror as Vida...). This is a comedy movie, but the queerness itself is not the butt of the joke. These characters are handled so tenderly by all three lead actors.

It's an absolutely lovely story about community, and friendship, and celebration of self.

2. Soldier's Girl (2003)

- Sad ending, but with a hopeful edge

- this one's a true story, and the trans woman it's about is still alive and working as an activist today!

An absolutely, unbelievably sweet, heartbreaking, and VITAL story. As someone who hates sad queer movies: this story DESERVES to be seen, and even though I bawled at the end, I never regretted it for a moment.

It's stunning, and so carefully, honestly told. I don't have the words this movie deserves, but please watch it. Barry Winchell deserves to have the truth of his story told.

And so much of the movie is filled with joy and love, I promise. The grief is there at the end, but there's so much good before it.

As a bonus: Lee Pace, the actor who played our transfemme main character, became friends with the real Calpernia Addams due to this movie! They brought her on to make sure everything was right, and she worked with him to help him nail the role. Their interactions were very cute.

(also Lee Pace makes a STUNNING Calpernia. I was deeply in love with her throughout the movie. Not to be a lesbian but oh my god)

Anyway, these movies changed my brain chemistry. And I think our younger queers especially need to see some of our first examples of genuinely good queer stories. And ones that aren't Rocky Horror, as much as I adore that one.

(mostly I just need other people to talk about these movies with. Please. Anyone.)

Movie Rec Ask Game

2. an indie film.

You know, I'm actually pretty late to the indie film genre. It wasn't until my mom got a Netflix account that I started watching more "indie" films -- mostly just non-major studio movies sometimes with no-name or up-and-coming stars and often LGBTQIA-themed. A couple of my fave indie movies are Weekend -- which is actually the movie that inspired my WinterFrost fic Stay With Me; Boy Meets Girl -- which was one of the first movies I saw with a transgender actor playing a transgender role (and also stars Michael Welch from Twilight); Redwoods -- which was the idea behind my FrostIron fic Empire State of Mind; and ofc, My Big Fat Greek Wedding!

6. a film released before 1970.

Ok, well, three of my favorite movies of all time were made in 1934, 1939, and 1944. (That's Gone with the Wind, It Happened One Night, and Double Indemnity). I grew up watching my mom's favorite musicals of the 1950s and 60s. My mom liked to show me, especially, all of her favorite films from her childhood.

13. a film whose main genre is drama.

OMG where do i start tho? Drama (next to action) is one of my fave genres. I'm a total nut for an Oscar bait movie and up until a few years ago, I used to watch every single movie nominated in the Big 6 awards (Acting categories, Directing, and Film) and my mom and I used to print out ballots and compete. IDK, google best dramas of all time and I probably have watched and love them all.

22. a film that is a novel/film adaptation.

One of my fave films, like it's in my Top 5 movies, is Atonement. And even though it's not the happiest of films (it's downright tragic, really), what I love the most is how close to the book it stayed. They even pulled dialogue directly from the book (not all adaptations do this). My nerdy ass even did a presentation for my Narrative in Literature and Film on the movie.

29. a film to feel good/uplifted.

uhh,,,,idk cuz my sister and i will literally watch disaster movies when we're in a good mood. lol like we watch the Day After Tomorrow, San Andreas, and 2012 on the regular bc they're out comfort movies.

Nina’s Heavenly Delights

When young Glaswegian cook Nina Shah (Shelley Conn) returns home for her father's funeral after three estranged years in London, England, she begins a romantic relationship with Lisa (Laura Fraser), an old childhood friend who now owns half the late father's Indian restaurant, The New Taj. Together they seek to save the restaurant by winning the national "Best in the West Curry Competition" for a third time. Nina's mother Suman (Veena Sood) and brother Kary (Atta Yaqub), however, want to sell the place to fellow restaurateur Raj (Art Malik), whose chef son Sanjay (Raji James) had been left at the altar by Nina. Lending the young women moral support is Nina's flamboyant gay friend Bobbi (Ronny Jhutti), and Nina's younger sister Priya (Zoe Henretty).

I LOVE THIS. I definitely want to do a full, new queer media recommendations video on my channel at some point, but here is a list on Letterboxd of all the queer film I’ve seen ranked in terms of how much I like it: https://letterboxd.com/ceciliaewing/list/yo-thats-gay/

I will say my recent faves have been HEARTS BEAT LOUD, which is an excellent indie drama about a father/daughter relationship, but the daughter is queer and has a romance with another girl! They never specify how she identifies, but there’s a scene where her dad asks if she has a girlfriend or a boyfriend, so it’s implied that she’s bi/pan or otherwise multi-gender attracted. Both girls are also women of color! And Toni Collette and Nick Offerman and Ted Danson are in it! 

SAVING FACE is an excellent classic f/f movie about chinese-american women falling in love. It’s wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. 

I recently loved PROFESSOR MARSTON AND THE WONDER WOMEN, which is the true story about the polyamorous thrupple behind the creation of the character wonder woman. It’s a fascinating look at a real life trio of people trying to make their relationship work in the mid-20th century and it’s real difficult at times, but ultimately wonderful.

It’s been about a billion years since I last watched it, but I feel like THE INCREDIBLY TRUE ADVENTURE OF TWO GIRLS IN LOVE doesn’t get enough attention as a f/f movie? It’s from the 90s and can be a little harder to track down, but I watched it in college when I was writing a paper about how lesbians were characterized in film in the 90s and it was by far my favorite one of the group I watched. Very sweet movie about a butch white girl and a femme black girl who fall for each other. But allllll the slapstick drama does ensue. 

OH and I almost forgot THE FEELS, which… if you adore Constance Wu and have ever wanted to see her be a lesbian? This is it. It’s very, very indie in style, about a bachelorette weekend where one of the brides reveals she’s never had an orgasm. Super sex-oriented, but it’s honestly a really great look at how we treat intimacy and sex that I loved lots and lots. But be prepared for drama.

Anyway, those are my recommendations for recent watches, or ones I don’t see mentioned as often. Check out that whole letterboxd list for some of my other favorites! Oh, and I have this full list of queer film to watch which is much longer. Hope this helps!

Ahh I love James Somerton's channel. For me it's up there with Philosophy Tube and Contrapoints. If you want similar videos, Lindsay Ellis, Sideways, The Sin Squad, Rowan Ellis, Yhara zayd, and eliquorice are great! They all make videos on lgbt+ film theory either once in while or constantly.
