Commonwealth Raider Gangs
You might've seen my post a while back detailing the Commonwealth's raider gangs. I hate to admit it, but I missed quite a few of them. So here's an updated and even longer post about the bastards.
Raiders are the scourge of the Wasteland, in the Commonwealth and everywhere else. Loosely organized, with a power hierarchy based on pure ruthlessness, they will attack anyone at any time... for any reason. — Fallout 4 loading screen
A guide to the Commonwealth’s raider gangs! Who works for whom, what each gang’s quirks and reputations are, how big each gang is, and more. Note that this only refers to Fallout 4 BASE GAME gangs (no DLC or Creation Club content). Please let me know if I’ve missed anything and I’ll update this post! I don’t have an estimation on the numbers for a lot of the gangs, but I’m updating this as I figure them out.
(Source: gameplay and the fallout wiki.)
- Major Gangs -
There are four dominant raider gangs in the Commonwealth; led by Jared, Slag, Tower Tom, and Bosco.
Jared’s Gang
Base Location: Corvega Assembly Plant
Sub-Gang(s):
Gristle’s Gang
Other Locations:
Concord
Leader: Jared
Other Named Members:
Freddie (mentioned-only)
Lonnie (mentioned-only)
Estimated Number: 60 (20 with Gristle)
Background: Lexington’s ruins used to be a raider stronghold until feral ghouls ran most of the raiders out. Now, only Jared’s Gang remains, based in the Corvega assembly plant. Jared has been obsessed with the ‘Sight’ since meeting Mama Murphy when he was a kid. He takes a lot of chems and gives them to his crew, searching for someone else with the ability; consequently, his crew is addicted to chems. When he heard Mama Murphy was in Concord, he sent Gristle to retrieve her.
Economy: Raiding nearby settlements and preying on caravans passing by Lexington.
--
Gristle’s Gang
Part of: Jared’s Gang
Location: Concord
Leader: Gristle
Estimated Number: 20
Background: Gristle and his crew were sent to Concord for two reasons - the first is Jared’s main goal: to retrieve Mama Murphy. The second is far more appealing to the majority of raiders throughout the Commonwealth: kill the only remaining Minutemen.
------
The Forged
Base Location: Saugus Ironworks
Sub-Gang(s):
Bedlam’s Gang
Leader: Slag
Estimated Number: X (X with Bedlam)
Background: The Forged have reactivated Saugus Ironworks and use the facility to smelt metals and make armaments. A detachment led by Bedlam scavenges the Dunwich Borers quarry and ships their products back to the Ironworks. The Forged have a reputation for being fire-worshippers; intense, fanatical, and tough. They burn weaklings and dissenters in the ironworks. All members are well trained and have gone through a brutal trial to earn their place. They are also given a new, often fire-related name; examples include Arsenic, Chamber, Damage, Havoc, and Riptide.
Economy: His economy is based on the ironwork’s production of metal, made with scraps from Dunwich Borers. They raid nearby farms for food, especially Finch farm.
---
Bedlam’s Gang
Part of: The Forged
Location: Dunwich Borers
Leader: Bedlam
Other Named Members:
Hugo (deceased)
Estimated Number:
Background: Bedlam’s gang is a detachment of the Forged. They scavenge the Dunwich Borers quarry and ship metal back to Saugus Ironworks.
Economy: They scavenge and raid when they need to.
------
Tower Tom’s Gang
Base Location: Beantown Brewery
Sub-Gang(s):
Sparta’s Gang
Leader: Tower Tom
Other Named Members:
Bull
Gouger
Dreg (mentioned only)
Hook (mentioned only)
Estimated Number: 35 (10 with Sparta)
Background: Tower Tom’s biggest war is against Red Tourette’s gang. He needed food and figured the only way to get it was to somehow force Red to give it to him. A failed raid led to the kidnapping of Red’s sister, Lily, and letters between the sisters get Tom’s gang steady shipments of food from Red. Tom accidentally kills Lily, but to ensure the food doesn’t stop, Tom starts sending fake letters. There’s a rumor among raiders that if a member of Tower Tom’s crew does especially good work, they’re rewarded by all the beer they can carry. Sparta and her crew are believed to have good gear due to their location in a federal facility.
Economy: His economy is based around operating the brewery.
--
Sparta’s Gang
Part of: Tower Tom’s Gang
Base Location: BADTFL Regional Office
Leader: Sparta
Estimated Number: 10
Background: Tower Tom’s gang has a food shortage, so Sparta and her crew were sent out to scavenge. They are believed to have good gear due to their location in a federal facility.
Economy: They scavenge and raid when they need to.
------
Bosco’s Gang
Base Location: D.B. Technical High School
Sub-Gang(s):
Gaff’s Gang
Leader: Bosco
Other Named Members:
Cleaver (mention-only, deceased)
Torque (mention-only, deceased)
Estimated Number: X
Background: His group is almost certainly the largest in the Commonwealth, with perhaps several hundred raiders. His economy is based on his gang’s scavenging and supplies. He’s based in the D. B. Technical High School, but he has a lot of land; odds are, if you come across a raider base in the Boston proper area, they’re Bosco’s. Unfortunately, despite his success, he’s going insane after being bitten by one of his soldier’s rabid dogs. He has a reputation for being absolutely insane, and some raiders regard him as creepy, but he’s extremely powerful and his base is known to be secure.
Economy: They likely survive by scavenging the prosperous Boston ruins. They also raid the trade routes between Goodneighbor, Diamond City, and the rest of the Commonwealth.
---
Gaff’s Gang
Part of: Bosco’s Gang
Base Location: Shamrock Taphouse
Leader: Gaff
Estimated Number:
Background: Gaff and his gang are known among raiders for having a nice setup; not only good defenses, but also billiards and beer. They were an independent gang until Bosco’s crew took them over by having a member sneak in and jam the locks on the taphouse’s doors. Gaff’s gang was trapped inside when Bosco’s crew released attack dogs - those who survived the attack submitted to Bosco’s rule.
Economy: unknown
- Minor Gangs -
L&L Gang
Base Location: None
Other Locations:
randomized
Leader: Captain Sally
Other Named Members:
Johnny T. Walters (with Sally)

Wayne Delancy
AJ
Estimated Number: X (X with Northy, X with Kate, X with Kendra)
Background: Sinjin’s gang is known for harassing Goodneighbor. Sinjin is known for being driven and having the tenacity and vision necessary to form a raider gang on par with an army. Hancock has a vested interest in eliminating him before he becomes a real problem. Sinjin has a reputation among raiders for being especially brutal and ‘psycho’, and willing to kill the family, friends, and just about anyone who talks to his enemies.
Economy: They harass and raid Goodneighbor and the city’s trade routes.
---
Northy’s Gang
Part of: Sinjin’s Gang
Location: south of Wattz Consumer Electronics
Leader: Northy
Estimated Number:
Background: Northy’s crew is a sub-group of Sinjin’s Gang.
---
Smiling Kate’s Gang
Part of: Sinjin’s Gang
Location: outside Bunker Hill

Background: This small gang has a fairly secure base in the Walden Pond gift shop basement and cave.
Economy: They occasionally raid Abernathy farm.
------
Sully Mathis’ Gang
Base Location: Thicket Excavations
Other Locations:
outskirts of Concord (temporarily)
Leader: Sully Mathis
Estimated Number: 1
Background: Sully’s gang only exists hypothetically - he’s scouting the quarry as a new location for a base, and once it’s drained he’s going to start recruiting. Fearful of the Mirelurks, he refuses to swim into the water to drain it himself, so he’s dressed as a settler and tries to trick someone into helping him empty the quarry for a “new settlement”.
Economy: None, yet.
------
Red Tourette’s Gang
Base Location: Federal Ration Stockpile
Leader: Red Tourette
Other Named Members:
Lily (mention-only, deceased)
Estimated Number: 10
Background: Red’s gang has plenty of food. When Tower Tom raids their base, he’s unsuccessful, but manages to kidnap Red’s sister, Lily. Lily is held hostage in order to force Red to send shipments of food, until Lily is accidentally killed. Tower Tom starts faking Lily’s letters so Red doesn’t catch on… but she’s getting suspicious. Red Tourette’s gang has a reputation for being well run (and well fed).
Economy: This gang sells the food left in the federal ration stockpile.
------
Zeller’s Army
Base Location: East Boston Preparatory School
Leader: Judge Zeller
Estimated Number: 12-30
Background: Zeller is a bloodthirsty raider who runs a particularly brutal group. The gang is infamous for brainwashing and torturing their victims mentally and physically until they either go insane or assimilate into the crew. Every member is forced into a Blood Contract, which reads “With my blood I do swear my life to the Judge and his Jury until the end, upon pain of torture and death.” Members are re-named based on their perceived traits and the torture they are subjected to; examples include Red Finger, Killer, Fishface, Rock Teeth, and Beggar. Even among other raiders, this gang has a reputation for being brutal.
Economy: Their economy is based on extorting Bunker Hill and attacking its caravans.
------
Wire’s Gang
Base Location: Libertalia
Leader: Wire
Other Named Members:
Anderson (mention-only, deceased)
Williams (mention-only, deceased)
Estimated Number: The group is rather small, with only about two or three dozen raiders.
Background: Wire is an ex-minuteman, who drifted away from the faction after its leaders fell. Despite the gang’s relatively small numbers, they’re well trained and have a secure base. Even Bosco has decided not to attack them because of the terrain of their base. They have a reputation for being a “community”, which appeals to some raiders.
Economy: His economy is based on attacking and extorting caravans, and the gang has an extortion deal with Bunker Hill.
------
Scutter’s Gang
Base Location: Hyde Park
Leader: Scutter
Estimated Number: X
Background: Scutter runs a small gang who, according to the Fallout 4 Survival Guide, are known for skinning and wearing their victims. Bosco attempted to take them over, but they refused to submit to him - a rare feat, and a testament to their power. They are known among other raiders as nutjobs. There’s a rumor within the gang that Gunners have infiltrated them (which is true), and that has led to a witch-hunt that effectively neutralizes the gang as long as they’re busy trying to catch the spies.
Economy: They occasionally raid Somerville Place for food and supplies.
------
Slough’s Gang
Base Location: Quincy Quarries
Leader: Slough
Estimated Number: X
Background: The raider gang in the heavily-radiated Quincy Quarries is made up entirely of ghouls, who are not only unfazed by the radiation, but heal from it. They do not butt heads with other raider gangs, but have fought with the Gunners in Quincy ruins frequently.
Economy: unknown
------
Ack-Ack’s Gang
Base Location: USAF Satellite Station Olivia
Leader: Ack-Ack
Estimated Number: 20
Background: Ack-Ack’s gang killed Mary Abernathy and stole her locket during a raid on the farm.
Economy: This gang survives by raiding farms for food, especially Abernathy farm.
------
Boomer’s Gang
Base Location: Outpost Zimonja
Leader: Boomer
Estimated Number: 12
Background: Boomer’s name comes from the Fat Man he wields. His gang took over Outpost Zimonja after it was set up by settlers, so it has a small farm, a well, and it’s fortified. Boomer’s crew have a reputation for being smart.
Economy: unknown
------
FMS Northern Star Gang
Base Location: FMS Northern Star
Leader: Rags
Estimated Number: X
Background: These raiders are Norwegian refugees, stranded in their shipwreck since the war. They beg in Norwegian for you to go away and leave them alone.
They were once Norwegian refugees, but now they are ghoulified raiders led by a man named Rags, who will attack anyone who wanders on to their vessel.
Economy: Rags and his gang will attack anyone who approaches their vessel, but they don’t seek out anyone to raid.
------
Chancer’s Gang
Base Location: Andrew Station
Leader: Chancer
Estimated Number: X
Background: Chancer’s crew mostly keep to themselves. They’re surrounded by rival gangs and super mutants, so they stay underground until they need to raid, scavenge, or move. Chancer has a reputation for being crazy - which isn’t unusual for raider gang bosses.
Economy: unknown
------
Cinder’s Gang
Base Location: Revere Beach station
Leader: Cinder
Estimated Number: X
Background: Cinder moved her gang underground. They mostly stay on the peninsula, as Gunners and Mutants block the routes off of it. Cinder is considered by some raiders to be a ‘savvy operator.’
Economy: They occasionally raid Nordhagen Beach for food.
------
Eager Ernie
Base Location: East City Downs
Leader: Eager Ernie
Other Named Members:
Tommy (mentioned-only)
Estimated Number:
Background: Ernie’s gang is technically made up of Triggermen, but he’s allied closely with the local raider gang. They’ve restored a variety of old robots which they race around an old horse racetrack. Some raiders think Eager Ernie's set up sounds fun, while others ridicule him for it. Ernie’s gang has a deal with Wire’s gang; in exchange for using the racetrack, Ernie sends a portion of his profits to Wire. Ernie instructs his gang to rig the races.
Economy: This gang profits off of raider customers betting on robot racing.
------
Clutch’s Gang
Base Location: Back Street Apparel
Leader: Clutch
Estimated Number: ?
Background: Clutch’s crew is one of the only gangs targeted by Bosco who haven’t been killed or assimilated into his crew.
Economy: They ambush caravans and travelers near Diamond City.
------
The Combat Zone
Base Location: Combat Zone
Leader: Tommy Lonegan
Background: The Combat Zone isn’t a gang in itself, but rather a hot spot for raiders from any of the Commonwealth’s gangs. There’s an enforced ceasefire in the bar, so raiders can gather to watch cage fights and drink.
Economy: The Combat Zone profits from raiders buying food and drinks, and gambling on cage fights.
------
Cutty’s Gang
Base Location: Poseidon Energy
Leader: Cutty
Estimated Number: X
Background: This gang is still setting up shop. They’re struggling with robot security systems still active in the facility, as well as mirelurks in its sublevels, so the gang mostly stays in the upper-levels.
Economy: Cutty’s gang preys only on the Warwick homestead; they can’t advance west due to the Gunner presence in Quincy.
------
Demo’s Gang
Base Location: Hardware Town
Leader: Demo
Estimated Number: X
Background: He and his crew lie in wait in the backroom of Hardware Town and use a gang member disguised as a wastelander to lure unsuspecting victims into an ambush. Sue (deceased, mention-only)
Jake (mentioned-only)
Estimated Number: X
Background: This gang has set up shop in the Monsignor Plaza shopping center in the center of Boston. A holotape found at the site, titled ‘Griswold’s poetry collection’, reveals the names of two raiders who are only mentioned in the game; Griswold and Sue. Griswold was romantically attracted to Sue, but after she offended him in some way, he shot and killed her. Sue herself has a terminal with only one entry - a note to self telling her to shoot Griswold next time she sees him. It is unknown whether Griswold or Sue are (or were) the gang’s boss.
Economy: unknown
------
Helter Skelter's Gang
Base Location: Malden Center
Leader: Helter Skelter
Other Named Members:
Gus (mentioned-only)
Estimated Number: X
Background: Helter Skelter’s gang was settled in the metro tunnels of Malden Center; however, they are currently holding out against a platoon of Institute synths. Helter Skelter and his best men are cornered in the terminus of the tunnel. No, OK, seriously, I need to rant for like 2 seconds about Assassin’s Creed III.
On the face of it, it’s like every other AC game, right? Modern meta-story, historical story that interacts with the meta within the same wrapper.
Except... this one is the American Revolution for the historical story.
And except... after no-personality Altair in the first game and Ezio “suave-ass motherfucker” Auditore di Firenze for 2 and Brotherhood and Revelations... you get first Haytham (arrogant ass) and then, after the switch that reveals he’s a Templar and not an Assassin (and don’t get me started on the novelization that gets him there - omfg, his entire family got done dirty in that book and it makes me so mad and sad all at once), you get Conner. Conner, who is half Native American. And I’ll give them this: they used the language, they used the history, and it’s really cool, but Conner is... one part whiny child and one part stoic bastard and while I respect the choices to led to him being what he is, I do not like him. (And side note for fellow Amber lovers - Conner’s way of speaking is totally what I hear for Julian. IYKYK.)
Oh, but let’s make it better. Because it’s not just that I don’t like Conner. It’s that in addition to not liking Conner, everyone around him is terrible. That poor man spends the entire game stuck helping out the Founding Fathers, and they are varying degrees of unable to take social cues (PAUL REVERE, did your mother not teach you that when you put a hand on someone and they practically slap it off, don’t do it again?), racist, or JUST PLAIN TROUBLE. I cannot begin to express how badly I want to punch Sam Adams in the fucking face in this game, because every single mission related to the Revolution that goes horribly wrong was THAT MAN’S IDEA. And if it wasn’t Sam Adams’ idea, he’s somehow involved. Oh yes, let’s send Conner to do Paul Revere’s ride, but oh, he got to the last house and SURPRISE, FUCKING SAM ADAMS NEEDS A RESCUE. Because OF COURSE HE NEEDS A RESCUE in the middle of motherfucking Lexington and Concord, and OF COURSE his first thought afterwards was propaganda! MOTHERFUCKER.
And this is all aside from my annoyance at some of the game mechanics (Pro Tip: No One Wants Your Fucking Mini Cutscene Every Time They Do A Simple, Common Action In A Video Game.) (Bonus Pro Tip: No One Wants Your Fucking Multi-Key Quick Time Events When They’re Jumped By Random Wildlife.) and the SNOW. SO MUCH SNOW. I KNOW, it’s NEW ENGLAND, but that does not mean I want to spend 20 fucking minutes watching my character do a fucking awkward wide-legged hop through fucking SNOW!
*exhale*
Why, you might ask, am I playing this game again?
...Honestly, I don’t know. I was waiting for Valhalla to update and went, “I’ll just go play remastered AC3 for a while...” (only to discover that like Steam, the damn Ubisoft launcher stops downloads when you start a game, but that’s another Annoyance)

Massachusetts is actually limbo. We don't know how our weather works. Spring lasts a month if we're lucky. 2 weeks in April and the first 2 of May. March is called surprise winter storm month. We love the sun but probably only see it every few weeks, depending on the time of year and the angle at which the eagle screams. We've had 3 tornados in past two years. It's September but the temperature this week has been in the 70s. But literally as I type this a cold front seems to be rolling in, clouds are blotting out the sun, and yet I can still smell that warm air. We are constantly in the state of "Will this be a normal rain or is a storm coming?"
The leaves began slowly falling a month ago. It was still very warm out. The first two weeks of September always smell like fresh cut grass and watermelon jolly ranchers. All the trees grow sideways. We get snow every year, and still over react when we hear it's on its way.
Our fucking monument is a rock, and there's a gang that's literally just the Massachusetts area code.
Our fauna is fucking nuts. We apparently have rattle snakes, (I WAS SHOOK WHEN I LEARNED THAT SHIT) and while rare, apparently we also have black widow spiders. There's a type of spider that lives here, that if it bites you, can cause necrosis. Our ecosystem mimics that lifecycle example of textbooks; rabbit overpop so foxes and coyotes overpop, then no food, so pop drops. Also there are deer sometimes. We had a bear make its way into Cape Cod a few years ago. It was in my yard at one point. That was fun. Turkeys are insane. They will attack you, your car, your dog, or run away screaming. It's always a toss up. Our mice can get to be the size of rats and or gerbils, especially field boys, because they thrive in our type of environment.
Our taxes are always weird Numbers, and none of us seem to know how they work. Our healthcare is free if you're poor (I had Masshealth and hoooboy. They told me I was 106% below the poverty line.. so like. I was double poor? I'm not entirely sure the people running it are smart...) But it also is shite. You literally should just go to your local hospital and have them fill out your paperwork if you need to renew it, because it will never be correct otherwise. After telling me I was like. Uber poor. They then proceeded to claim I was making too much money to receive the free health care. Apparently they had me listed as working 5 jobs, because despite me having to constantly update them about any income changes (IE I quit that job. I no longer work there. I am employed at a different place.) they would then just add that to the list of jobs I currently worked at. I had to drive two hours away to get a tooth removed because no dental surgeon near me could do it as they didn't take my insurance. (I may or may not be venting... Let me have this.)
Tourists. They arrive in droves and expect to have perfect weather. I may or may not have started to take great pleasure in telling ppl they missed out on the lovely weather we'd had the week before, when it had been gross and muggy the next. (If I don't get to enjoy the nice weather when it comes to us, neither do you Sharon!) They also demand you tell them if the local historical museums and attractions are interesting. Lady, why would I visit the JFK museum, I have grown up with all of them, my mom grew up with them and went to school with them. I have no need the hear their stories for the 15th million time. And why do you think it will be easy to just wander anywhere near the kennedy compound without getting in trouble? You can't just visit them, they are not a zoo attraction! (Some of them are really chill but it depends on which kid you talk to.) My favorite was "Oh my god do they really live there?! All year round?" Like... Idk? I would assume they probably travel, but like... We're not all buddy buddy with them? I don't know if they're at the house on the vineyard this week, but if they call I'll let you know! "Plymouth rock was not as interesting as I thought it would be." It's... It's a rock. What did you think it would take and preform a dance number? The plantation ain't real either! You wanna tell me how disappointed you were that those are actors and that none of them actually live there? (It does happen and it does make me die inside.) Yes. Everything on cape cod is nautical themed, we are famous for it, you want generic go to the mall. I don't know if anyone around here are locally sourced seafood servers. Ask them!
HALLOWEEN IS WEIRD. Salem goes overboard and so suddenly people seem to think the rest of massachusetts needs to get spooky. Every village has ghost tours. I have never been on one but yes, I have seen the marsh lady, she is terrifying. And yes I did see the ghost horse. No it's not particularly interesting, but we've all seen them, and we pretend not to.
Boston is historical as fuck. You wanna learn history shit? Go there. Concord and Lexington are just as historical. Salem is only cool during the fall, nothing else is really open during the summer there.
I ALMOST FORGOT ABOUT THE MEDIA SHIT:
Boondock Saints is the most Boston Bullshit (in a good way) movie you will ever see. And the second one was... Ok? The Covenant was like... If Salem was trying to advertise itself by making it sexy and edgy to teenage girls? If you need serious Boston rep for music: Dropkick Murphy's, Godsmack, and Aerosmith. (We also count Rob Zombie, despite him being from New York? Don't ask me. I don't have answers.) Godsmack is the best. No take backs.
Massachusetts is not real. Anyone who says otherwise is selling you something.

A Guide To Prioritizing Tasks For SEO
Why do we need a specialist for SEO service in San Jose to optimize the website? it is a question that the majority of service providers face, but it does not have a simple answer. Nevertheless, has there ever been a website that just needs one thing?
That is the concern with search engine optimization. It is comprised of so many things that when faced with the question of what we are supposed to do, we often find ourselves providing a lot of recommendations. Unluckily, the majority of teams are not equipped with the knowledge or resources to deal with them, and rather than of getting everything carried out, we end up with very little, if anything, complete.
How do we promise that our teams are making the amendments we need to help drive success? Let us take a quick look here.
Prioritize by impact
There is simply so much time in the day that means not everything can get done. So, if we can just get one or two things onto the list, we have to make sure we are selecting the recommendations that are going to have the biggest impact on the website as a whole.
Let us now take a look at a technical SEO audit, for instance. In a technical audit, the professionals offering SEO service in San Jose may recommend canonicalization, redirect updates, heading tags, image compression, and several other things. A development team already bogged down by their regular day-to-day is not going to be capable of fitting all of this in.
In order to make sure we get something carried out, we have to take a look at what is actually holding back the website. Title tags may not seem like the highest priority in the world, but if the website does not have them, then that specific modification alone could lead to a considerable improvement.
When making recommendations, help teams be aware of where they are supposed to begin and what can wait. Always keep in mind that not everything is going to be a priority.
Prioritize by resources
The same thing applies to resources as well. A customer was recommended to switch the website from HTTP to HTTPS. One was aboard and then the service provider realized it did not have any person to deal with the course of action.
Switching a website over to HTTPS is not a small feat. It can be intricate, can lead to errors, and as it has been observed a number of times now, it can lead to significant loss of organic traffic. We could not take the risk. So, hold on to the recommendation until you have the right person in place to make sure a smooth transition.
At the end of the day, the professionals offering SEO service in San Jose are often dependent on other departments to be doing well. And, in addition, they are always aware of the resources available to them and adjust when required in order to deliver the most promising results. This is all info I have hope you like the article.

Historic American Church Set to Integrate Its Slavery Ties
— By Mark Pratt | Associated Press | August 17, 2021
The great contradiction of Boston’s Old North Church is that a site pivotal to the freedom of the nation is the same place where slave owners and traders once worshiped.
Now, with a $75,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities announced Tuesday, the foundation responsible for the preservation of the church campus and the visitor experience plans to overhaul its educational programming to better reconcile and integrate those ties to slavery.
The grant is one of $28.4 million in grants for about 240 projects nationwide.
“We’ll be able to address what I call the paradox of the Old North Church,” said Nikki Stewart, executive director of the Old North Foundation, which is distinct from the active Episcopal congregation that still uses the site for religious services. “People see us as a symbol of liberty and independence, but the reality is that the church benefitted from the enslavement of Africans.”
For example, the famous steeple was financed in part by the sale of logwood, the harvesting of which was dependent on slave labor, she said.
The church, built in 1723, is known to generations of schoolchildren as the place where in 1775 two lanterns in the steeple signaled that the British were heading to Concord and Lexington “by sea” and set Paul Revere on the ride that ignited the American Revolution.
The links to slavery have always been known, but just how strong those ties were came to light several years ago after the foundation started a program to highlight the connections of several congregants to the Colonial chocolate-making trade.
One of those chocolatiers, it turned out, was Newark Jackson, who was also a sea captain and smuggler who trafficked in slaves.
“That was really a punch in the gut to our whole organization,” Stewart said.
Further research found that Jackson was killed during a mutiny aboard a ship in 1743 that at the time was transporting 15 slaves, 13 of whom were children.
Like most cultural organizations, the Old North Foundation suffered greatly during the pandemic. The church welcomed about 150,000 visitors in 2019. It shut down completely for a while, and Stewart estimates that current visitation is still only about half what it was.
The grant will help change the educational experience in three ways: through the narratives the staff tells to visitors; through updated exhibits and interpretive signage; and through new online and digital programming designed for children.
“It is our hope that through this plan that all Americans will be able to see their stories in the Old North Church,” Stewart said.

5 Reasons Why SMB's Should Use SEO
As the owner of a small or medium-sized business, you may be under the impression that "SEO" (Search Engine Optimisation) is just a fancy marketing term for big businesses and corporations. And you're not alone - in a recent survey, it was found that while 56% of small businesses have their own websites, only 28% think about SEO.
The importance of SEO in this day and age could not be more prevalent. Neglecting to apply SEO strategies to your website may be as crippling for your business as locking your front doors. So what does SEO do? In a world where most consumers use search engines to find nearby companies, SEO is the difference between being visible or invisible. Here are 5 reasons why SMB's should use SEO today.
1) Traffic Boost
The traffic going to your website is driven mainly by search engines. Simply putting up a website is not enough to get seen; people have to know you exist in the first place. Every time they use Google or another search engine to find their new job, designer handbag, car repair (or anything else), Google uses special algorithms to determine which websites will show up on the front page.
By using certain SEO strategies, you can be one of the first sites to pop up every time someone needs something related to your business. Without SEO, you will be buried beneath a mountain of competitors.
2) It's Cost Effective
Most marketing and advertising costs big money, but the only cost of SEO is how much time you spend learning SEO strategies and writing content, or paying an SEO specialist to improve your Google rankings. With a proper SEO campaign maintained over several months, you can expect an ROI several times greater than any Facebook or AdWords advertising, up to 800% or more.
3) Small Businesses Can Beat Big Businesses with Specific Keywords and Other Localized Advantages
Once you get into SEO, you will start to learn that it's all about the keywords, which are simply the words and phrases that people enter into search engines. The overall goal of SEO is to write content in which these keywords are used and focused on, making your site stronger and higher ranked when people Google that certain keyword.
So you might think that your chances at success are hopeless; after all, how are you supposed to out-SEO corporations and large businesses that have been doing this for years? Well, small businesses actually have a greater advantage due to long tail keywords. Long tail keywords are long and specific keywords or phrases. As a small business, you also have a smaller and more specific target audience (for example, everyone looking for your product or service in your town or city, as opposed to a global audience). You can hone in on long tail keywords that include your specific location or audience, that big businesses won't bother tackling. Sure, Toys R Us may get all the "new toys" searches, but your small toy store can capture all the "new toys for young boys in London" searches.
And this isn't the only thing that helps out small businesses, search engines generally take into account the user's location with Local Search, meaning you have a better chance to be seen by people in your area. This will only improve with recent updates in which business owners can further personalize their listings.
In addition to this there is also what's known as "off-page SEO": this is less about the SEO work you do on your website, and more about improving your reputation in the real world and through social media. It turns out that people are more than willing to talk up a small local business that provide a good service, and the more people are talking about you on the web, the more likely your rankings will rise.
4) Competitors Will Always Have an Advantage If You Don't Jump Onboard
The internet boom has come and gone, and ignoring what it can offer is just irresponsible for your business. SEO is fact of life these days and most, if not all, of your competitors are certain to be doing this, so you need to get onboard.
You may argue that you already have a stable group of loyal customers who will keep your business afloat, customers with whom you have built up trust before the SEO and social media years. Sure, that may be the case now, but how long until those customers stop needing or wanting the service or product you provide? New customers will not flock to your store like the old ones. Why? Because new customers will be swept away by your competition long before they even hear your name.
5) SEO Will Always Be Around
SEO isn't something that we'll ride out. The way search engines work, and the fact Google has an increasingly monopolized hold over search engines and various social media platforms, SEO will always be relevant. The best option is to start working on your SEO as soon as possible if you don't want your business to drown under the current.
So what are you waiting for? Don't let the marketing acronyms and jargon scare you away; at the end of the day, SEO is as simple as every other part of running a business. The longer you wait, the further you fall behind. And if you still don't feel comfortable handling all the technical aspects of SEO, that's fine; that's what SEO specialists are for.

The Anatomy of Melancholy, 12
Table of Contents Go to first. Go to previous. Go to next.
Updated 2019.01.29. (Minor name tweaks.) Doping/drugging tw
Hours later, the chemist returned inside to find the dust had settled enough to tolerate. In the following days, he readied his stock and with exuberance set to preparing a buffet of both useful and marketable chems. While Angel busied itself investigating the newly accessible administrative offices, ‘Choly tended not to pay much mind to any of it, except to take stock of the cash office and the executive suite’s wet bar. Despite the amenities of the executive suite, due to it being the top story it had sustained poor weathering, and the most comfortable living space remained the floor with the break room. But, ‘Choly had a potential market staked out here in Lexington, and that source of income superseded any potential disappointment he might have experienced over the absence of any immediate lavish furnishings. The habit of accumulating funds was diehard as ever in the absence of other means of stability, and the familiarity of falling back into pharmacology nursed it readily.
Both therapy and information came from taking his work breaks on the balcony-roof. In daylight, he could see these raiders neighbored him to three sides: behind him to the South at the Corvega plant, and to the West and North across the street a collapsing network of high-rise apartments. The re-coolant and bus station still to his East remained lifeless at a glance. The raiders, all around him, seemed wholly more civil to him than those which had overtaken Concord. None had, after all, taken a shot at him yet, and they hadn’t to his knowledge tried to break into the pharmacy. He speculated that, perhaps, they’d freshly conquered Concord, and that their laxity here in Lexington sprang from their ability to sprawl out comfortably in the urban canopy, away from the feral ghouls wandering at street level.
He wondered if the Concord raiders belonged to this larger outfit. Part of him definitely thought so, but another greater whole of him believed most citizens of this wasteland now behaved in such a way, embracing a freedom from performative expectations. Human nature contained within it the capacity to uphold the ideals of creative anarchy. He could respect it.
Melancholy set himself on a chem break after a successful batch of Calmex: a veterinary sedative related to ketamine which, used on humans at key dosages, shuts off certain pieces of the brain to proffer sum function to the rest. The chemist had favored the commonplace tranquilizer for recreation before the war. Up until the final year before the bomb exchange, Calmex had found no respected use as anything besides cost-effective sedation for battlefield surgery, rather than its capacity for steeling snipers’ precision and readiness to shoot. Who knows who gave a fresh surgery patient a gun before the sedative trance had wholly worn off; maybe, a soldier’s commanding officer grew too impatient, and rushed her off back into the fray prematurely. With the war efforts more focused on offense rather than medical recovery, the chem rations had prior rarely impacted how freely the sedative flowed--but that changed upon the discovery of its weaponizable function, and it dried up just like everything else the military had a purpose for.
Grateful for the harness-compatible dart cases he’d located in the pharmaceutical stockroom, along with a variety of other syringer paraphernalia, he’d affixed them to his suspenders with affection, and outfitted each case with different injectable substances: some explicitly for personal use, the rest to dote upon others. The Calmex fell among the former. If this trial run went smoothly, he’d have to branch out his product line among the latter.
He whet his lips. As he sat on the pharmacy roof with the syringer rifle in his lap, Melancholy helped himself to a Calmex dart and rubbed vacantly at his antecubital fold after administering it. Coming up here like this, he sought to treat his new acquaintances. Advertisement, he told himself. He loaded the pneumatic dart gun’s magazine with a bottle of Buffout he’d that morning laced out into darts via epinephrine. In the past ‘Choly had always used Calmex to disengage his mind from his body, but here he would test for himself its ability to interface them in ways only nature could have intended. The chem seemed not only to steady his aim and improve his vision, but it also dulled his compunction just as much as it did his sensation. He squinted through the sight, and popped a dart at the nearest raider on the roof of Corvega.
A commotion ensued when the dart stuck the raider in the neck. He brushed away the offending trinket like a swatted insect and whirled around to locate the source of the sting. When he realized he Felt Pretty Good, he stopped making a big deal out of it and stared squarely at the wheelchair-bound dreg in a sack hood. A buddy in a mixture of hurricane fence and tatters shuffled up to him and she shoved him in the shoulder, and he pointed at Melancholy and probably told her that the dreg had shot him with something.
'Choly popped off another dart, this time into the buddy of the first. She, too, flustered in the moment, but paused when no apparent harm came of it, and proceeded to shove her pal again. The roughhousing resulted in the guy getting knocked on his butt the second time, and she looked to her hands and tittered. She hoisted him up over her shoulder mockingly and slipped away with him, and soon more raiders appeared with her and filed up at the edge of the plant’s roof with their expecting arms out in welcome.
“Like shooting skeet.”
He chuckled to himself, taking aim again and going down the line. After he had them all juiced and rowdy, he shot the last round in the pneumatic gun into the butt of one of them. She jumped and grabbed the thing, to find it had neither chems in it nor functioning administration mechanisms. Instead she pulled from it a scroll of paper. Inspecting it, she showed it to the others. Free Samples: Buffout. The chemist had hoped at least one of them were literate--at least, English literate. He doubted any of them spoke or read much Russian.
“HOW MUCH?”
This time aimed at the shoulder of the one who’d hollered, a second shot lodged in his leather pauldron.
Upon scrutiny, this note stimulated an incredulous ruckus. $40 A Hit. The Good Shit.
“THIS ASS WANTS CASH!”
Codeine-like heaviness washed over him, fluid and loathsome. He’d only prepared three message vials, and the third seemed ill-timed without their clarification. He hooked a thumb in the neck hole of his hood and pulled it up enough to free his mouth, then with the gun across his lap used the other hand to project his voice. Head treading water somewhere between the sedative and the failure to persuade, he chose his words carefully.
“DO YOU... NOT USE DOLLARS OUT HERE?”
A different raider replied, agitated.
“CAPS OR NOTHING. DUNNO WHAT BACKASSARDS PLACE YOU’RE FROM. AIN’T NOBODY GOT CASH.”
Caps? he wondered. Capsules? Baseball caps? No... bottle caps? How could he possibly respond to such a potential bluff, without blurting out how far behind the times his stasis had thrown him? He’d suspected the gold and silver standards could have long since been replaced by just about anything, but bottle caps? He nearly couldn’t help but laugh. The third message vial would go unused. Slowly, he raised his cupped hand again, and the deranged delirium trickled out of him coolly.
“THE SAMPLES WERE DILUTE. YOU WANT THE PURE STUFF, YOU MAKE A CASH DEPOSIT TO THE CAPSULE PIPELINE OF THE PHARMACY.”
The commotion shuffled between irate to quiet to incredulous again.
“Forget you,” was the common dismissal as they all waved him off in frustration and walked away. Yet, he stayed his ground, and returned inside.
Within an hour, just over five hundred dollars, in a mixture of denominations, had appeared in the delivery chute in Eleanor’s office.
All told, he felt like he’d cut the raiders a steep discount at forty dollars a shot, a true bargain complete with a free introductory hit. Buffout wasn’t commercially available in an injectable form before the bombs, and for good reasons, foremost on account of its alimentary uptake routes. Yet, he could easily forge a racket in this fashion, and the unaware would buy either form of the steroid. From a pharmacological standpoint, in tablet form, the steroid pill worked out to about fifty dollars a dose, with a package running anywhere from $400-600; but altering it into a liqueous suspension, a chemist could squeeze at least twelve doses out of an eight-dose bottle without raising doubts. Epinephrine came far cheaper than the steroid, and the two enhanced one other stellarly--but the duration of the cocktail didn’t last as long as either on their own. ‘Choly had doled out samples which were almost entirely epinephrine, of which he had several hundred vials at his disposal at that given time. A common tactic for dealers in the time before the nuclear exchange, especially during the rations, it would likely serve him well here also.
Funny, how lacing most chems dilutes the potency of their side effects, while simultaneously skyrocketing the formation of addiction.
+ + + + + + + + + + +
Over the next few days, ‘Choly made a routine of his rooftop chem breaks, so as to be able to deliver on the promised chems. Like clockwork, the raiders kept an eye out for ‘Choly and, sure enough, lined up to receive the moment they saw him load up his dart gun. Word got around, and he even got a few clients in the high rises across the way. He tried to memorize the faces of his repeat customers, even as they slowly increased in number, mostly as to limit administering his goods to someone who hadn’t actually paid for it.
To keep it simple for the time being, 'Choly limited himself to only Buffout, but if things continued as planned, he hoped to branch out into chemical families where he had more sophisticated knowledge as to tinker with them. Regardless, he’d have to switch things up, since synthesizing steroids and hormones was far beyond the scope of his capacity or education, and albeit a sizable supply, it was still a limited one.
Around a week later, ‘Choly rolled out onto the rooftop balcony for Lexington’s scheduled chem break, only to find around two dozen raiders encircling him. They’d flung down scaffolding across from one high rise and waited to ambush him. He swallowed hard, trying to keep them from seeing how badly he shook. Somehow, he expected one to come up to him and unmask him, but none did.
“Jared wants to speak to you,” a woman announced, porting threadbare plaid, a wild blonde mohawk, and black grease paint streaks across her face. She pointed her baseball bat at him. “It’s ill-advised to tell him you’re unavailable.”
‘Choly stiffened in his seat, but knew better than to make any sudden moves, or try to retreat inside.
“I,” he cleared his throat, “I’ll meet with him. I’ll meet you at street level in ten minutes or less.”
“You’re coming across the plank with us,” a second girl insisted, stepping forward and unholstering a small pistol from her gun harness. Her head was buzzed. A striped bandanna crossed the lower half of her face, and besides the harness, she wore little else. The pistol cocked in his direction and ‘Choly sniffed.
“I’m not resisting you. It’s just, this chair isn’t for looks or laziness.” The chemist glared at the scaffolding, haunted by the mere idea of it. “I. I don’t know the elevator situation in the next building over. I’ll meet you at street level, and you can take me wherever from there.”
“I’ll carry you then,” the second asserted, leaning in to take the syringe for herself, only to have ‘Choly shy from her as best he could. “I paid yesterday. Hit me and we’re golden for a solid five minutes. No problem.”
“Barb, stop.” The first one tapped her foot at her. “Don’t waste your high on Jared’s errand, babe. You. Hand over the whole case of Buffout to Barb here.”
The demand screwed up ‘Choly’s face under his cowl. It hurt more than a gunshot.
“Bleeding me dry here--”
“--Shut up, or get roughed up,” the apparent leader snapped. When he complied, and Barb handed over the case to her, she shoved Barb forward again, addressing her compatriot first and then him. “I’ll save one for you, Barb. Accompany this... entrepreneur down to where we can bring ‘em back to the plant, would you? You understand we have to keep an eye on you.”
“Him.” He choked on phlegm and a flinch, like a pill caught in his throat. When they didn’t object to specificity, a different delirium overtook him. “I. I understand full well. One. Only one, all right?”
“Sure,” the second, Barb, asserted.
‘Choly’s stomach dropped as Barb insisted upon taking hold of the handles of the chair and pushing him, rather than letting him push himself. About face, she jammed him up to the security console to reenter, and he shielded the keypad with both hands to keep her from seeing what he’d set the password to.
“Don’t get any funny ideas,” she muttered as they came inside alone.
“Aw, no, but those are the only kind I get,” he joked, clutching his syringer rifle. “The elevator’s over here.”
“How’s a dreg like you even end up in this place? I never seen somebody usin’ one of these things before. If you can’t walk, I don’t get it.”
“I didn’t have my morning Sugar Bombs today. I’d rather we didn’t try to make idle chitchat.”
“Whatever.”
They took the fourth floor elevator to the first. He’d hoped to encounter Angel along the way, but it seemed the Handy had been preoccupied elsewhere. Hiding a grimace as they navigated out, he planted his feet against the pavement.
“What gives?”
“I’m locking the front door, dammit.”
She rolled her eyes at him.
“Fine.”
Once he’d done so, they continued West down the street. His heart pounded in his head. The heightened senses of the Calmex would still last a good bit, and he could hear the feral ghouls loitering aimlessly nearby. He bit at his lower lip, with a death grip on his rifle.
“Aren’t we waiting for your friends?” he started, rubbernecking back as they passed the entire Super Duper Mart building.
“They’ll catch up. Hey, how fast s’this thing go?”
‘Choly gulped as she kicked him back onto his handrim wheels only, and sprinted letting out a spirited laugh. The frame of the wheelchair rattled uselessly, and the real threat of it falling apart from underneath him had him sweating cold. Past the high rises, the street sloped up to the Corvega building, and by then the rest of the group came up behind them as Barb slowed and set him back down proper. A turret puttered by the front entry, spotlit and stationed with a handful of other raiders.
The throng entered the building, and navigated the hallway to an elevator. Barb and the leader took it up to the third floor, the rest of them taking the stairs.
“Glad you could make it, Hewlett.”
“Shut up. Tryin’ to have all the fun without us. Oughtta keep your hit for that.”
Barb gasped.
“You wouldn’t dare.”
“Ladies, ladies.” ‘Choly chuffed, dying of anxiety. “There’s more than enough of me to go around.”
Hewlett slapped him in the back of the head, and he got a clue.
The elevator opened and they entered the assembly floor of the plant. Those who had scaled the stairs tried to pretend they had followed to keep their guns on ‘Choly, rather than to eavesdrop. Certain elements of immaturity in this operation got the chemist smiling to himself.
“Jared!” Hewlett called out to the foreman’s office at the top of a set of bar-grate stairs. “You gotta visitor.”
With streaked white face paint which matched Hewlett’s, a black man with a short mohawk stepped out of the office and looked down over the assembly machinery to his compatriots, gripping at the handrail with a deadly look in his grinning eye.
“Glad you could make it, chem-dreg. We got business to discuss.”
