Things found in old books : My undated (early 20th cent.) copy of Balzac's Contes drolatiques has a drab cover, but has all the Doré illustrations (over 400) within. Inside was a shore-to-ship news cable dated December 1st, 1930. There's a short missive or diary entry about train travel on the back. Some of the news stories were more spectacular than others (vide supra).

"I needed to control my suffering through regular physical movement. It was my way of avoiding the depression that follows from a great expenditure of energy or peaks of exhilaration. The act of raising my arm at regular intervals lulled by thoughts and brought to my heart, where a storm raged, a peaceful ebb and flow that calmed my spirit. Each stitch responded to a secret, do you see?"
Mme de Mortsauf on tapestry as a relief from grief.
Honoré de Balzac (2024 translation by Peter Bush) 'The Lily in the Valley'
