A little oneshot where, in another universe, matt is her boyfriend and ewan is completely in love with darling, matty seeing ewan looking at darling lovingly and feeling a little possessive 😈
in between
Ewan Mitchell x f!reader (Matt Smith x f!reader)
a/n: this can be read as chem ov au or as a standalone oneshot! written in Ewan's POV. 💛
main masterlist
Tumblr media
"Oh, come on, it wasn't that bad!" Your voice carried a surprised affectation, echoing on set.
Ewan had just taken a jab at one of your all-time favourite movies. "How can you call yourself a cinephile and have that in your Letterboxd top 4?" he had exclaimed, sliding his seat closer to you.
He liked when you visited the set. In truth, he liked having you around, whenever, wherever. All you had to do was show up and he'd feel a hundred times lighter, no matter how bad his workload was for the day.
And you showed up, often. You in your usual jeans and snug coat, trudging about on the sidelines with a paper cup of coffee held in one hand like a safety device, a warm smile readily given to crew and cast members.
You were like Ewan's beacon of light.
You were also, the love of Matt's life. Recently engaged, your left hand sported a dazzling diamond ring, a glaring 'screw you' every time it caught Ewan's eye.
Still, it didn't stop him from seeking you out, from craving the sound of your laughter, from wanting to hear all the stories you tell.
Ewan wanted to beat the living daylights out of Matt when he would kiss you in front of him.
How dare he? How dare your fiancé kiss you, the love of his life?
Ewan's, that is.
"I don't care what the critics say. It's one of my favourite films and that's that," you declared, wagging a finger at him. He wanted to use it to pull you closer, catching you off guard so you stumble onto him. A blush would quickly spread across your cheeks, and you would squeak his name, all embarrassed.
Adorable.
Clumsy little darling, he would say.
Hmm, you'd smile, gazing up at him with those doe eyes, I like it when you call me that. Matt doesn't.
He's a bloody fool, isn't he?
Mhmm. Ewan?
Yes, darling?
I've seen you the way you look at me. Your palm would slide across his chest, torturingly sweet.
You have, haven't you? Clever girl.
Another smile. A cheekier one this time. I know you want me.
I'd be stupid not to. How can I not be in love with you?
You would lean in, and he would be enveloped in your scent. Why don't you show me?
Darling?
Show me how much you love me.
Your lips, so close to his, soft and inviting. All it would take is the smallest of movements, the slightest lean forward, and then he would taste —
"Ewan?" You had been waving a hand in front of his face, your expression having turned worried. "Are you okay, mate?"
Mate. He hated that. So casual. Reserved for friends, colleagues, buddies.
"Y-yeah, darling," he stammered, clearing his throat. He was about to come up with an excuse when your attention was diverted.
"There you are, my love," Matt buzzed in from somewhere, an unwelcome intrusion, ruining Ewan's moment with you.
"Hi, baby." You craned your neck as Matt swooped down to give you a kiss. One that lingered far too long for Ewan's liking. If he didn't know any better, he would have thought that Matt was doing it on purpose.
Maybe he was. The bastard.
"You all done with your scene?" you asked.
"Yes, finally. I missed my fiancée." Matt gently eased you off the chair, so he can plop down in your place, and coax you onto his lap. You wrapped your arms around his shoulders, giggling softly.
That sound was heavenly. Ewan yearned to always be at the receiving of it.
Matt planted another kiss on your cheek, then said, "I hope you weren't too bored, my love? It's a good thing you've got Ewan here to keep you company."
"Yeah," you smiled, turning to Ewan, "if only he didn't make fun of me all the time!"
Matt playfully gasped. "Are you messing with my future wife, Mitchell?"
Ewan was growing more irate by the second, seeing you snug against Matt like that. "Nothing she can't handle," he replied.
"We do have a good time," you nodded.
Ewan wished he could show you what a real good time with him was like.
Matt smirked at you. "Not as good as our times though, right, my love?" He was truly playing with fire, when he winked at Ewan and added, "Well, I better get my lady back home. I'm sure she's still sore from last night's activities."
"Matthew!" you slapped him on the chest, but you were clearly amused. "No need to taint Ewan's ears with that!"
Matt and you stood hand in hand, politely bidding Ewan goodbye before sauntering off together.
What an annoying sight.
Then you turned to look over your shoulder, smiled at him, and stuck your tongue out.
He rolled his eyes at your antics.
It was silly. It was cute.
It was the most beautiful thing he'd ever seen.
And the next time you would be on set, he would surely only think the same.

RELATIONSHIP WITH SEVENTEEN <> MAKNAE LINE
Tumblr media Tumblr media
MINGHAO - guide in life
THEN: Minghao was excited to have another Chinese member join them, even if they were a girl and could cause controversy amongst media and fans. While the other members fussed over Cyana whenever she was upset, Minghao would be the one to treat her normally, opting to distract her from her brooding thoughts instead. Cyana learned a lot of life skills from Minghao. NOW: Minghao and Cyana still have that iconic zen friendship. Whenever life gets a bit too much, Minghao is the one Cyana runs to. He keeps her life in balance, as he nags encourages her to eat healthily, sleep early, to meditate and to join him for tea ceremonies. On the other hand, Minghao and Cyana love gossiping in Chinese, knowing it's annoying the others that they cannot understand.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
DK - sunshine duo
THEN: DK and Cyana bonded almost immediately despite the language barrier. All it took was one blazing smile from DK and a shy one from Cyana for them to become best friends. DK basically adopted the girl and people began to notice how bubbly and open Cyana would be around him. NOW: The childlike glow around their friendship hasn't faded despite both of them growing up. Cyana shines the brightest around DK and vice versa. When either of them is feeling down, the other never fails to do something extra goofy to cheer them up. Coined as the "sunshine duo," Cyana is often dragged into skits by DK to entertain fans.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
MINGYU - visual double kill
THEN: Having a new member only excited Mingyu, despite it being a girl. Sure, he was a little nervous at first, but he got over it just as quickly. Cyana loved bantering with Mingyu, as they both spoke broken konglish in fit of giggles. They paired perfectly as a black cat / golden retriever duo. NOW: As they grew up, both of them never ceased to be the group's visual double kill. They often graced magazine covers together and went on weverse live to eat and interact with fans. Cyana's Mingyu's personal taster when it comes to his cooking, and in return he is often the first to taste her baking. Fans often liken the duo to a dog and its girl, as Mingyu is often photographed following behind Cyana with a big ol' grin on his face.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
SEUNGKWAN - gossip buddies
THEN: In the beginning, Cyana was a bit put off by how energetic and loud Seungkwan could be. It tired her out easily, but with more time, Seungkwan became her go-to person for easy comfort. He often knew exactly what she needed at the moment and would always invite her out on impromptu outings for fun. NOW: Seungkwan played a big part in breaking Cyana's shell, allowing her to become the confident person she is today. They are the best gossip buddies now that the language barrier does not restrict them, and love being fangirls/fanboys together. Seungkwan still invites Cyana everywhere with him when they have time, introducing her to his idol friends outside of seventeen.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
VERNON - goofball twins
THEN: Similar to Joshua, Vernon was excited to have a new member from the US, even more excited when he heard it'd be someone close in age. Vernon was the one that Cyana could often let her guard down and just....exist. His goofy antics miffed her a bit in the beginning but she grew to love his quirks, even adopting some of them for herself. NOW: Vernon and Cyana are movie buddies and often roommates while on tour. They love trading movie reviews (running a secret and joint letterboxd account). Vernon's the one Cyana goes to in times of distress, knowing he won't scold or fuss over her like the others might do.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
DINO - twin maknaes
THEN: Dino was excited to have his wish - to have a friend his age in the group - finally granted. He was a little worried when the friend turned out to be a girl, but his outgoing nature befriended Cyana easily despite the language barrier. They were attached at the hip, babied by their members and company staff. NOW: Being the same age and growing up together, experiencing the same things close in time resulted in them being the closest duo within seventeen. They grew into natural sibling energy, with little fights, teases and a generally good time. Both known as the future of Kpop, they often push each other to do better and are each others biggest cheerleaders.

This is partially because I’m a fucking film nerd and partially because someone on Reddit asked so here’s a new headcanon list.
How the 104th cadet corps acts in a movie theater and what they go see.
(Plus bonus Porco and Pieck)
Eren: Accidentally leaves his alarm on and it goes off at a pivotal moment. Doesn’t talk much but makes fun of bad visual effects. Really likes Michael Bay but it’s because he likes his inner 8-year-old to have fun. Got Nerds rope and a Coke slushie at the concession stand to share with Mikasa. Regal member and refuses to go elsewhere.
Mikasa: Silent. Phone powered off entirely, shares food with Sasha but also orders a small popcorn for herself from the concession stand and shares the Coke slushie with Eren. Regal member so she can go with Eren for cheaper but also enjoys a local cinema. LOVES Ava DuVernay. Also likes really old movies and unironically pushes people to watch Citizen Kane.
Armin: Nerd!min is a Disney Star Wars hater. Nerd!min is a Post-endgame Marvel hater. Boycotts all the movies/shows because he insists they’re all boring money-grabs now (and he’s not entirely wrong). Regular Armin is a big David Lynch fan for the cerebral mindfucks and was devastated at his recent passing. His Letterboxd is fucking wild. Alamo Drafthouse or a local cinema. Unlimited popcorn and a daiquiri all to himself.
Historia: Thought she was all sneaky and cool for bringing her own snacks. Forces Ymir to go see the Barbie half of Barbenheimer. Loves Sofia Coppola for the aesthetics and recurring themes of women under immense pressure. Doesn’t talk. AMC stubs member.
Ymir: Snuck in a Chipotle burrito without even trying to hide it. Groaned at going to Barbie but cried. LOVED Oppenheimer even though Historia fell asleep. Also AMC stubs member. Likes Nolan for the more mainstream cerebral films. Will never shut up about Interstellar.
Reiner: Got a pretzel, nachos, unlimited popcorn, and brought a Dr. Pepper so he wouldn’t have to pay for one. Occasionally comments on stuff he finds funny. Likes silly feel good movies when going to the theater but also an avid Ridley Scott defender at home. Surprisingly also an Alamo draft house fan. Loves Sebastian Stan as an actor and will see ANYTHING he’s in.
Bertoldt: Buddy Comedy is his genre. Quiet in the theater but listens and agrees with Reiner’s comments. Cherry slushie and pepperoni pizza from the concession stand. Not a member anywhere but will go to any theater with anyone to see any movie. Doesn’t have a favorite director but really loved “The Nice Guys” and thinks Ryan Gosling is better than Ryan Reynolds.
Annie: Likes to go alone so she can really absorb everything she sees and she deeply enjoys the theater experience. Goes to the local cinema to support small businesses. Medium popcorn and a Diet Coke. Likes George Miller both because of Happy Feet and also because of Mad Max. Also likes foreign films and will occasionally go to a local film festival with Armin.
Marco: Gets super excited and dresses up for Marvel and Star Wars movies. Sifts through all the recent junk and forced Nerd!min to watch Andor. Large popcorn to share with everyone. Rates the film on his Letterboxd while the credits are rolling and tells everyone to wait for the end credits scene if there is one. Really loves Spielberg for the nostalgic themes. Cinemark fan but LOVES a good drive in.
Connie: King of slapstick comedy and rarely watches anything else. Avid defender of animated movies as being for adults as much as they are for kids. Doesn’t care about what theater he goes to. Bought a whole pizza and a tall boy at the concession stand. Laughs loudly and whispers incessantly. Johnny Mnemonic and Pineapple Express are his favorite movies of all time. Doesn’t have a favorite director.
Sasha: Brings her own snacks and also buys food. When she’s with Connie she’s down for any comedy but when she’s with Jean or Mikasa she’s surprisingly really into deep, human stories. Big fan of Greta Gerwig and loved Little Women. Ratatouille is her favorite movie because it’s about food as a love language that transcends time. AMC fan but will happily go anywhere.
Jean: Shushes other people. Gets a whole meal at Alamo draft house because he believes the theater experience should be pampered. Likes foreign films and biopics. Likes Denis Villeneuve for his sense of scale. Will go on a 45 minute rant about how Amy Adams was robbed of an Oscar in Arrival. Loved “The Ritual” when Pieck showed it to him and got upset that it never went to theaters.
Pieck: Horror fan to the MAX. Favorite one is The Conjuring 2. Loved The Substance. Loves old movies and backs Mikasa up on how good Citizen Kane is. Loves OG Psycho and loves Hitchcock. Likes to go alone but also goes with Jean or Armin or Mikasa. HUGE fan of James Wan and Blumhouse as a studio. Also likes Satoshi Kon. Cried when Jean took her to see Godzilla minus one (minus color, obviously).
Porco: Doesn’t really watch movies but enjoys the popcorn and time with others. Pieck showed him Dogtooth once as a joke and he never watched a movie with her again. Plays movies at home as background noise while he’s doing house chores.

Hugh Grant in an interview with variety said that Mr. Reed never fully lied. There was a blueberry pie we saw later in the film and he does have a wife and that she’s one of the prophets. That brings up more questions for me like when did they get married and how did they meet? Did their relationship start like a normal one and then he converted her. Or did he do the same thing he did with the other prophets only he forced her to marry him unlike the others. Is she the first prophet the first person. That makes me think that the great loss Hugh mentioned in an interview letterboxd was maybe a family member or close friend, or maybe the dog in the photo.
I mean I guess he could still have lost his wife if we interpret the prophet wife as a second wife. It could also maybe be the great loss was his first wife he spirals goes insane marries someone else in a vain attempt to deal with his grief. He’s like never mind fuck this and manipulates her with his one true religion, and sends her to basement to be prophet because she’s not able to replace the wife he lost.
I don’t know I’m rambling. This is a stupid theory or hypothesis or whatever. Idk I personally prefer the theory that the person close to Mr. Reed who died and became a catalyst for his turn to religion could be the wife rather than his wife just being one of the prophets but that’s just me.

Why I think Tim Drake finds himself identified with the plot of The Breakfast Club.
(This is a follow up on my previous post about the Batfamily Letterboxd reviews)
I do believe Tim would not only find the film to be boring at first when Steph suggests that the family should watch it during their famous family nights, but he would also find himself unable to accept the emotional wreckage he would just have experienced after finishing it.
Let me explain.
It could be argued that the Batfamily dynamics, most specifically, the siblings ones could be represented by the characters in the movie, as well as their personalities and experiences.
However, I would like to take this a step further and say that each member of The Breakfast Club, the struggles, masks, and both personal and interpersonal relationships represent a stage of what Tim has got to go through in his life. Let’s go through each:
Tumblr media
• Claire Standish (The Princess):
Claire comes from a wealthy family and is part of the popular crowd. She is used to being admired but also feels isolated because of the pressures that come with her social status. Underneath, she is insecure and deeply unhappy. She also feels like she is only valued for her looks and status.
Stage> Tim’s pre-Robin life.
Tim came from a wealthy family, but he wasn’t spoiled or arrogant. His parents were often away on business, which left him feeling emotionally neglected. He had money, but not much real connection with others. Making him feel unhappy and unfulfilled.
Tumblr media
• Allison Reynolds (The Basket Case):
Allison is an outsider who has no real friends and is used to being ignored. She suffers from extreme loneliness and neglect since her parents completely ignore her. She has no sense of identity and feels invisible. She doesn’t actually have a reason to be in detention, she just showed up because she had nothing better to do. Throughout the movie, Allison opens up to the others and shows a more vulnerable side. Claire gives her a makeover, which symbolizes her desire to be noticed.
Stage> Tim decides to be Robin.
Tim had always been a very intelligent and observant child, regardless of his lack of interaction with others, he could study them quite well. When this trait helps him find who Batman and Nightwing are, and uses that same skill to find them and make himself heard despite this being something he is not used to doing. The mantle of Robin becomes his makeover.
Tumblr media
• Brian Johnson (The Brain):
Brian is a top student, likely in advanced classes. He’s an overachiever who is socially awkward and desperate for approval. He wants to fit in but doesn’t know how. His self-worth is entirely tied to his grades and academic success. His parents pressure him to be perfect, and he feels like a failure when he falls short. He was given detention for bringing a flare gun to school after failing shop class, his first real academic failure. This hints at unaliving thoughts, as he implies he considered using the gun on himself. Over the course of the movie, Brian opens up about the intense pressure he faces.
Stage> Tim faces the pressure of being Robin after Jason.
Tim quickly realized the importance and heaviness of the mantle he had been passed down. All of this, mixed with the constant struggle of having to pull Bruce out of the shadows that grief was causing on him, made him feel the need of having to live up to the image of someone he knew the bat had chosen himself. This led him to have an immense lack of self confidence, now needing to prove to Bruce, Dick, and everyone else involved that he was not Jason, nor he wanted to be. He wanted to be better, but into the eyes of a grieving man, he always fell short.
Tumblr media
• Andrew Clark (The Athlete):
Andrew’s father pushes him to be the best, and he feels obligated to live up to that expectation. He is confident and friendly but deeply insecure. His biggest fear is disappointing his father, who only values him for his athletic success. Throughout the movie, Andrew realizes that his self-worth shouldn’t come from his father’s approval.
Stage> Being valued for who he is by Batman.
By this point, Tim had faced many challenges as both himself and as Robin. He was not accepted as Robin at first by Bruce, but eventually, he earned his trust with determination and skills. Batman had to push him, in ways that were completely different from the previous Robins. The detective potential, the strategic nature, the methodical approach. Tim was a natural that Bruce was ultimately proud had found his way to him. And Tim learned not to depend on whatever he was similar or not with the past people who’ve had held the mantle before.
Tumblr media
• John Bender (The Criminal):
Sarcastic, rebellious, and aggressive on the outside, but vulnerable and deeply hurt underneath. He uses his tough-guy persona as a shield to protect himself.
He hates authority figures because they remind him of his father. He believes he is destined to fail, as he has never been given a chance to succeed. Over the course of the movie, Bender goes from being hostile and defensive to showing his vulnerability. He shares a heartbreaking story about his father burning him with a cigar, which helps the others understand why he acts the way he does. At the end, as he walks across the football field and raises his fist in the air, it symbolizes his defiance but also his newfound sense of hope.
Stage> Red-Robin era, post-Bruce’s alleged death.
After Bruce was presumed dead and Dick had to assume the mantle of Batman for a while, it began one of the most difficult times for Tim. He not only was disregarded by his own family when he firmly believed that Bruce was still alive, but he was left with a sense of betrayal once Dick decided to take Damian Wayne under his wing as his Robin, removing a mantle he had earned through sweat and tears. He rebelled and went solo, beating people to near death in hopes of finding the truth about what he believed has been a lie, and that Bruce would be found.
Tim doesn’t stay in that dark state of mind permanently, but he struggles with it on and off depending on the circumstances. And just like Bender, once he has been able to let himself show vulnerability despite his family’s troubled relationship, he finds himself receiving support from a new found family in the teams he’s led: Young Justice and the Teen Titans.

Hi! I’m Quinn and I have a goal to watch and rank every single DC animated movie! I’ve watch over 20 so far but I just started posting my thoughts on Tumblr. Because I’ve watched so many, I decided to just post about the ones I’m currently watching! But, if you see a movie on my list that you want me to cover, just leave a comment or something or ask in my inbox!
Anywho:
In my quest to watch all the DC animated movies, my next watch was Batman Vs Robin!
Spoilers!!!!
I liked this movie a lot more than I thought I would. I wasn’t the biggest Damian Wayne fan coming into this movie but honestly? This movie gave me more appreciation for him. I was honestly shocked to find out most people felt differently. A lot of people on letterbox’d were saying their opinion on Damian didn’t shift much.
I think that Bruce’s attitude shift towards Damian lacked some build up, it was definitely there but I felt there could’ve been more. In the movie’s defense, it’s only 80 minutes and there’s a lot of plot to cover. This being said, I LOVED THEIR INTERACTIONS. Oh my gosh it was so cute. Like that’s literally his baby.
DC does better with the pacing in this movie than it does with others. The middle kinda straggles a bit but the last third of the movie is so good it’s honestly worth it.
I also want to take a moment to appreciate the fight scenes. God this movie had such epic fight scenes. Even the sparring match between Dick and Damian was peak. Watching Dick fight was especially fun because they really utilized his acrobatic skills!
A couple of other things I want to add, I did not like the soundtrack. A lot of the music felt out of place and almost like something you’d hear in a YouTube video.
There was one specific plot line that didn’t add up, Bruce had a girlfriend who ended up being part of the court of owls, and she was two timing Bruce with Talon. Long story short Talon killed her, we never got a reaction from Bruce because he never found out, but it did feel like the two of them dating did absolutely nothing for the plot. It didn’t add any emotional stake or any sense of betrayal because…he just never knew? Honestly she could’ve just not been a member of the court and the story would’ve more or less stayed the same. It felt like she was thrown in as a last minute plot twist.
This is real nitpicky of me, but I want to comment on Damian’s relationship with Talon. There were no hints that Talon was manipulating Damian other than Bruce outright saying “Damian, he’s manipulating you” which does the job but I think there could’ve been a few more subtle hints dropped.
This movie may not be the best technical wise or from a writing point of view, but it’s so fun I don’t even care. his movie is probably definitely in my top 5 so far!

I finally watched Martyrs (2008) yesterday and posted a queer analysis on Letterboxd, but I think it may be more appreciated here on Tumblr where all the queer Martyrs (2008) fans seem to have flocked. So here’s my argument for why Anna and Lucie’s love was not one-sided, but fully reciprocated, and as a necessary warning, MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD.
Tumblr media
Firstly, when Anna drops her wallet in the car, the camera pans to the open wallet and we see that Anna keeps photos of herself and Lucie inside. Anna dropping the wallet and the camera focusing on the open wallet for half a second was intentional- we as the audience are meant to take note of its contents. On the left side of the wallet, Anna keeps a candid photo of herself and Lucie when they were younger, presumably taken by an orphanage staff member. You can argue that this photo alone isn’t proof because Anna might just have fond memories of their shared history together as childhood best friends, and I might even agree if we stopped there. However, the other photo in the wallet in combination with this one is extremely revealing.
On the right side of the wallet, Anna keeps a photo of just Lucie alone. In the photo, Lucie is wearing a silly birthday cone hat on her head and looking up at the camera and warmly smiling/laughing. To me, this is an inarguably intimate photo for Anna to keep in her wallet. Why? Presumably, Anna herself took the photo since she’s not in the shot, and if we place ourselves in Lucie’s shoes, we can then assume that she’s not only smiling for the camera, but at Anna herself as she takes the photo. The contrast between the silliness of Lucie’s hat versus the expression on her face radiates unadulterated love for the person taking the photo and a cozy sense of domesticity. For Anna to feel so connected to that photo of Lucie in particular to the point of carrying it with her at all times shows how much that moment with Lucie meant to her.
Tumblr media
Secondly, after Anna and Lucie place the now (mostly) dead Belfonds’ bodies in the bathroom, Anna’s shock wears off after making eye contact with Marie Belfond and the reality of the situation they’re in begins to register. Alone in the bathroom, Anna breaks down and begins to cry as she kneels on the floor next to the bodies. Having heard Anna crying, Lucie returns to check in on her and kneels in front of Anna, then the two take each other in for an intimate embrace. As Lucie rests her head on Anna’s chest, Anna kisses the top of her head, and Lucie responds by tenderly kissing Anna’s neck not once- mind you- but multiple times. After pulling out of the embrace, Lucie gives Anna a small yet tender smile, and Anna responds to this by cupping Lucie’s face and kissing her on the lips. At this point, Lucie pushes Anna away and asks, “What are you doing?”
I’ve seen many point to this as Lucie rejecting Anna romantically and therefore an indication that they’re not a couple, but I disagree with this analysis. When Lucie pushes Anna away, she notably does so very gently and her tone when she asks “What are you doing?” was extremely calm. This indicated to me that it wasn’t Anna’s affection that took Lucie off-guard, but the timing of it. I would think that if it was a wholesale rejection of Anna’s romantic love, Lucie would’ve pushed her away more quickly/roughly and used a harsh tone.
As for why Anna kissed Lucie in that moment, I believe seeing Lucie’s smile brought her a moment of normalcy during an otherwise horrific event- something she desparately needed as the shock wore off, and something only Lucie could offer. Lucie’s smile reminded Anna of the intimate moments where she’s seen Lucie smile at her like this, and as an effort to grab onto that sense of normalcy she does what she typically does in response to her smile- she kisses Lucie.
Tumblr media
Lastly, and to me a scene that is just BEGGING to be picked apart, is when Anna calls her mother the morning after Lucie kills herself. We learn that Anna hasn’t spoken to her mother in over two years, and from the jump her mother is clearly frustrated with Anna. She asks Anna where she’s living and how she’s doing, and Anna simply replies by saying “I’m okay.” Her mother, dissatisfied with Anna’s non-response, asks “You’re still with her?”, referring to Lucie. She then claims that Anna is “under [Lucie’s] influence.” Anna quickly rushes in to deny her mother’s accusation, but her mother doesn’t take it and exclaims “Christ! You’re still with her- it’s the same thing.” Further frustrated by the revelation that Anna is still “with” Lucie, Anna’s mother goes on a rant about Lucie, calling her a “good-for nothing” and “a bitch, a pervert, [and] a loser.” She concludes her rant by telling Anna to “get away from [Lucie].”
Anna’s mother’s choice of language when she disparages Lucie is striking. Her choice to use the word “pervert” to describe Lucie stuck out to me in particular, as it’s not typically a word used by parents to admonish their child’s friends (although I suppose we could also say Lucie isn’t “typical”). From context clues, we know that Anna comes from a religious background- presumably Christian- and therefore her mother is probably religious. Many religions, Christianity being no exception, push the idea that any non-heterosexual person/act is inherently “perverted.” It’s highly possible that part of Anna’s mother’s disdain towards Lucie and her frustration with Anna is rooted in these homophobic values and her attribution of “perversion” to Anna and Lucie’s relationship.
This can also explain why Anna hasn’t contacted her mother in over two years. Anna is used to her mother prying into her relationship with Lucie every time they talk and she’s tired of her mother’s judgment. Anna’s mother repeatedly pries because she desperately wants Anna to tell her that she’s finally rid herself of Lucie (and consequently of her “perversion”) and she’s exasperated because every time they call she learns that they’re still together and Anna has no intention of leaving Lucie.
I also want to call back to how, after initially learning they’re still together, Anna’s mother says it’s the same thing” and her assertion that Anna is “under [Lucie’s] influence.” I interpret the use of “it” by Anna’s mother to refer to homosexuality (because the “it” is implied to be part of the reason they haven’t spoken in two years), and Lucie’s supposed “influence,” to Anna’s mother, Lucie is “influencing” her daughter to be gay and again “perverted.”
Another thing of note, after Anna’s mother asks why she’s calling her after two years, she asks if the reason for the call is to “make [her] feel guilty.” She follows this up by rhetorically asking “Think I don’t blame myself? Think my head’s not filled with all the crap I did?” It’s possible that Anna’s mother is referring to the act of leaving Anna in an orphanage, but for this to be the case, the timeline doesn’t add up. I believe this supposed “guilt” could instead refer to what transpired during their last phonecall and caused the two years of no-contact. If we assume that my explanation above regarding her mother’s prodding is correct, we can guess that the last call ended poorly because Anna refused to leave Lucie (therefore refusing to “stop being gay” in her mother’s eyes), and this led to their estrangement. When Anna’s mother refers to the “guilt” she feels, she may only be referring to feeling guilty for the harsh way she addressed Anna in the last call and not for the rationale behind her harshness. She feels guilty not for being homophobic, but for doing so in such a way that her daughter pushed her away.
This could also just be the familiar actions of an abusive person utilizing DARVO to make their victim feel like they’re the abuser. By making Anna feel like she’s at fault for making her mother spend the past two years feeling “guilty” and torturing herself with “all the crap [she] did,” her mother effectively turns the blame and offloads any feelings of guilt onto Anna.
Now, why did Anna call her mother for the first time in two years at this moment of crisis given their fraught past? One explanation is that Anna, knowing that there’s no longer any normalcy after Lucie’s death, thinks that now that the world has seemingly turned on its head, maybe- just maybe- her mother could provide a sense of comfort. Anna hopes that now that it’s been two years, now that her mother has had time to reflect, and now that nothing feels real anymore, she can confide in her mother about the fact that her lover killed herself and receive any amount of consolation. While illogical in any other moment, now that reality itself is illogical, Anna holds on to this speck of hope just to be slapped in the face with the fact that her mother hasn’t changed one bit. Another explanation is that Anna called her mother, knowing that she would behave in this manner, and believed that hearing her mother denigrate her relationship with Lucie as if she were still alive- while painful- could give her even an ounce of the normalcy that being with Lucie provided.
Anyways, all of that hullabaloo just to say: Anna and Lucie are in lesbians.
