You’d moved to the countertop in the meantime, socked feet swinging, thumping against the cupboards below with each movement. You were smiling warmly at him when he turned back to face you, watching him shuffle around the tiny kitchen like you’d never seen anything more interesting. 

“What?” 

“Nothing.” He arched a brow at you. “Nothing, I’m just…really happy. Here. With you. In our own home.” 

Remus brightened noticeably, coming over to run a light hand down your arm until your fingers were intertwined. He brought it up to his lips and kissed your knuckles. “It’s nice, innit?” 

“Everything’s nice with you.” You were quite aware of how sappy you sounded, but it was true. You can tell that censorship had FWSC hemmed tighter than that second in command was clutching his evil boss' urn - we all know if she had her druthers, the stupid emperor would have been taken out in a coup by Li Ni (who would have actually got to kill one of his brothers) and there would have been a lot more of ambition and murder (the secondary girl? would have so been murdered!) But on the upside, we also got a blissful OTP ending and a ML who is probably the sole drama ML this year that I actually would want to be married to in RL.

Alright, my fellow UY folks!! Since the new trailer has dropped, why don't we unpack everything they've shown us so far?

Or more specifically, what all chapters are getting adapted in the third cour (only third since they won't reveal footage for the fourth one till the third is over.)!!

First up is the Kurama - Ran - Rei two-parter!! Nice to see Kurama again since I was worried she would be a one time character since she didn't appear in the eye catches. However, I'm pretty sure this is going to be her last appearance since it's her final appearance in the manga (not counting cameos). It's one of the funnier Kurama chapters, so this will be great fun!!

Next up is the 'Fantasy bubblegum' chapter!! Another one I didn't think which would be adapted since we see Ten order the key item in this chapter in the post credits of the love-love crystal ball episode. Maybe the order was delayed? Or Ten didn't use it till now? Who knows. Anyways, this is a pretty funny chapter and I'm excited to see how it turns out (Also BenOyu yuri, Let's goo!!!)

AtaLum fans, Let's rejoice, because it looks like they're adapting "Love knows no barriers" aka the chapter where Lum gets hit with the rice cooker!!! This one is my favorite singular chapter in the series and I absolutely hated the original anime's version of this one so I hope the remake does this one justice!! I'm not sure whether the first one is from this chapter since Ataru's wearing his school uniform instead of his casuals, but maybe it's because of a few changes here and there. DavidPro, you better not disappoint me considering what the original did.

Looks like we're going to get the chapter which introduces the Ryuunosuke's mom (Masako) saga. I'm not sure whether they'll adapt everything under this saga, but the first one seems to be there. I really like this chapter because we get a wholesome relationship between Ryu and Ataru's mom.

THE BODYSWAP CHAPTER!!! This one comes a bit earlier from what I remember and not to mention, it's pretty hilarious (literally any chapter where Sakura has to deal with Ataru's BS is an A+ for me) so I'm super excited!!

ASUKA, MY CHILD!! IT'S HER!! Finally one of my UY Blorbo's gets animated!! And considering the shot of her and Ton- chan, yes guys, they're keeping the incest. I've never understood why there were some who said they wouldn't adapt it but like, it's one of Asuka's main character points and the incest is clearly portrayed as wrong and unacceptable, similar to Ataru's lecherous behavior (They might still tone it down though). Anyways, I'm so excited for Asuka, I can't wait!!!

Okay, so baby witch with 0 experience and I live in an old house that was lovingly built by a man for his family back during the great depression, right? I was feeling really sentimental thinking about that yesterday and comparing it to my own family's (much less wholesome) situation and at one point passively thought that it'd be nice to have a family that close and caring, and thought about maybe one day having a spirit friend that could give me that sort of feeling. Again, this was only passive thoughts - no petition or any action from me beyond that.

Cut to last night, I have a dream of the least-horrible parts of my family, dead grandparents in better shape than they've been since I was a child, an estranged sibling, etc. All living in an old family home my mom and uncle had no choice but to sell. I've dreamed of family before, but it's always been a pretty bad one involving members I don't like. This one was really nice though. However, there was someone else in my dream that I thought was an IRL friend from work, who had, let's just say a very *strong* pressence.

When I woke up, still pretty groggy, I turned over in bed and immediately heard (in my head) friend from work, who still feels nearby, call me from behind me. When I try to lift my head, I have the very first episode of sleep paralysis on my life. Again, I had moved my body moments before this, so extra weird. I feel like something's about to happen, but I'm able to break out super quickly. It's about this time that I think to myself "wait a minute, work friend isn't an incorporeal being that can suddenly appear in my room" and start getting weirded out.

Now, while this experience felt 100% different than any weird dreams that I've had before, I still wasn't convinced it wasn't all in my head, so I pulled a couple of tarot cards.

"Okay... what were their intentions?": The Moon, enjoying healthy fantasies and daydreams, practicing magic, embracing the unknown

I'm still not great with tarot, but that all seems pretty clear cut to me.

I understand that I should give them an offering to thank them for reaching out with the nice dream, and probably ask them to not do the sleep paralysis thing again because I did *not* enjoy that. Beyond that, because I was barely ready to start practicing magic at all, let alone with spirits, I feel rather unprepared. Any additional advice you can give me with this information is appreciated.

You didn't ask, but I'm sure you're aware that petitions or actions aren't required to call to spirits. An earnest desire is often enough to spark action from nearby spirits who are waiting at the veil with bated breath.

It may be worthy of consideration that this spirit in the guise of your work friend is not one of your ancestors. I've had spirits (one very important one, actually) show up for me when I started ancestor work, because that was the first time he was able to reach me.

If a spirit gave me sleep paralysis, I'm not sure I'd give them an offering.

Your experience felt like it came on a little strong. It's unusual for people to be thwacked by spirits like that out of the blue. This isn't to say I doubt the veracity of your story, but rather that you might want to consider that you're not dealing with some random household spirit.

If you don't want to talk to or interact with the spirit at this time, you don't have to. If you want to work with spirits at this time, it should be an active choice - not something you fall into by happenstance (or let yourself be pressured into because you don't want to feel mean for not wanting to talk to a spirit who initiated contact).

I highly recommend working wards to protect you during your sleep, and protecting your bedroom/sleeping space as a whole.

When next performing divination, enchant your tools to constrain them to tell the truth (or to prevent the spirit from showing untrue answers).

A person who wants to jump into spirit work with heavy-handed spirits will likely not regret, and might someday be very grateful for, preparing a very stern protective amulet ahead of time to prevent spirits from reaching them. Once enchanted, such an amulet can be kept out of the way until needed.

My Top 4 favorite manga of 2024!

And here we are again! After I had so much fun curating my picks from last year, I thought I’d take the time to highlight and appreciate my top 4 favorite manga series that I’ve started reading this year!

#4: Okashi na Elf to Joshikousei (Sweets, Elf, And A High School Girl) 16 Chapters- Complete!

Genre/Themes: Light-hearted fantasy, baking, comedy

Premise: An elf named Alice is in debt running her departed mother’s bakery when she gets whisked away to the apartment of a Japanese schoolgirl named Ruri. Ruri, wanting to help Alice out, teaches her all sorts of quick and easy dessert recipes (that the readers can try out too!) and the pair soon form an unlikely friendship!

I love baking and things that teach me about it, and while the most popular cooking-themed manga may not offer much in the way of real recipes, I’m really glad this one does!

It’s got a great art style, cute and cozy premise, and an all-round wholesome feel to it! And the desserts it teaches you to make often come with alternatives and backups, really carrying home the whole Bob Ross style “happy accidents” tone of the series.

A brief and simple manga, and for those whom it may concern, the light Yuri themes only stay as themes for the series. Unlike our next pick…

#3: Nengan no Akuyaku Reijou (I Got My Wish and Reincarnated as the Villainess (Last Boss)!) Currently ongoing at 44 biweekly chapters!

Genre/Themes: Otome Isekai (Female-focused video game style fantasy), Yuri (Lesbian romance), Overpowered protagonist comedy

Premise: A sickly girl named Elizabeth is reborn into a fantasy world as the arbiter of evil- but Elizabeth is a kind person at heart, and is so grateful for her new lease on life that she only uses her overwhelming sinister powers for personal fitness! And things get even more out of hand when she falls in love with her classmate- a sweet honest girl named Karen and the “chosen one” of this world. Follow Elizabeth and Karen on their magical adventures as they bond with each other, fend off obnoxious male suitors, and hopefully prevent Elizabeth’s destiny to destroy the world!

Never thought I’d have an Isekai on here, let alone another Yuri, but here are some key differences that sold me on this series- maybe they’ll sell you on it too!

The protagonist isn’t aware this universe functions like a game- she’s not an otaku using her outside knowledge to manipulate those around her. She’s just happy to be alive and loves exploring (and massacring) her way through this magical kingdom!

Conversely, I like to see a Villainess character with an actual “Villainous” theme and story to her. I’m not a fan of “Villainesses” who are just mean rich girls- that’s just called “being a bitch”, haha. And the more malevolent Elizabeth’s powers seem, the better they contrast against how friendly she is, which makes the story even better!

The art has that nice solid shading that I like to see in manga- not that overly light airbrushing stuff.

Like I said about some of my top picks last year, I love a romance story where the couple actually enjoys casually spending time with each other- No melodrama, no petty arguments, no pining, no yearning, no rushed enemies to lovers, just two people who really care about each other, and this is that

As someone who loves One Punch Man and Mob Psycho, it’s just fun to see an overpowered protagonist express their simple and wholesome outlook on life as they beat down close-minded antagonists!

It’s really funny- this was the out-of-context panel that convinced me to read it!

I’m not particularly familiar with concepts like “doomed Yuri” or warning signs of queerbaiting, so if you know better than I do, let me know! Otherwise, this series is still tons of fun even without the romance, so that’s cool! I will say though that the most recent chapter as of me typing this, Ch44, is the first to have overly egregious fanservice, so that's a mild letdown.

#2: Replica Datte, Koi wo suru. (Even a Replica Falls in Love) Currently ongoing at 17 monthly chapters!

Genre/Themes: Highschool drama, mild thriller themes, mild supernatural elements, romance

Premise: Sunao Aikawa looks like a normal high school girl, except for one small detail- she’s a Replica. A temporary duplicate conjured up by the real Sunao to run the errands she’s too depressed to do in person. The real Sunao can will away her replica, Nao, whenever she’s served her purpose, erasing her from existence until the next time she’s needed. Despite all this, Nao wants agency as her own person- she wants to live life outside of Sunao’s orders, to find hobbies, friends, and maybe even fall in love. But she’s completely powerless to do so as things are.

I never thought a dramatic series with next to no comedy, action, or colorful fantasy elements would wind up so high on my list! It’s a great story about trying to find your identity in the face of those who try to suppress you. I really like how it follows a serious subject matter with lots of dark themes and implications, but neither the visuals nor the story take things too far by making it overly edgy or grim. There’s just enough tranquillity and joy to make the tense parts stand out, and vice versa. It’s gripping but not depressing, and that’s really really impressive!

On top of all that, this series has some crazy twists and turns! Obviously I don’t want to spoil exactly what they are, but rest assured there’s some absolutely mindblowing reveals throughout the story!

#1: Houkago Kitaku Biyori (Journey Home After School) Currently ongoing at 33 biweekly chapters!

Genre/Themes: Highschool Romcom, wholesome, very cute.

Premise: As he recovers from a sports injury, high school freshman Shun is caught up in the “Hyper Go-Home Club” by its sole member- an eccentrically positive girl who goes by Chokki-chan. The goal of the club is just to walk home, find cool stuff along the way, and appreciate the small “romances” of life we often overlook. And naturally, Shun and Chokki develop a strong bond with each other through these wholesome adventures!

I only just got into this series a few months ago and no joke, it’s already claimed the spot of my favorite manga of the year and one of my favorites of all time! Chokki’s personality of wanting to find the beauty in the small things in life makes her really endearing, and her chemistry with Shun is great! No bickering, no fanservice cliches, no rivals subplot, just two people wholesomely bonding through cute shenanigans like in Pseudo Harem (My #1 manga of last year)! I really really really hope this series gets an anime adaptation next!!

Pros:

·        Cute art style- VERY well drawn!!

·        Great humor (Can’t have a romcom without the com!)

·        Good and cute chemistry between the couple

·        Good pacing and progress (For 33 chapters so far)

·        Fun side cast

·        No need for fanservice

Cons:

·        I really can’t think of any! I just don’t hope they drag out the “will they won’t they” for too long, and that the couple getting together will be just the halfway point of the series, like with Pseudo Harem.

And truth be told, there were definitely a few other manga series in the running for the top 4, but their lack of publishing and/or slow translations put me off mentioning them- I don’t want anyone to suffer because I recommended them a series on hiatus, haha. If they ever get published/translated better next year, maybe I’ll recommend them for 2025!
