marivert is fucking weird and I love it and I don't ship it at all but for some reason it's just still so great. Like, it's so insane and unhinged and whoever thought of it was probably on crack but like, it's great I fully approve.

"... at Toulon, during the hours of repose, which were for Jean Valjean hours of reverie, this gloomy galley-slave, seated with folded arms upon the bar of some capstan, with the end of his chain thrust into his pocket to prevent its dragging, serious, silent, and thoughtful, a pariah of the laws which regarded the man with wrath, condemned by civilization, and regarding heaven with severity."

I love when I get to a passage in a book that I’ve seen out of context before. Today’s gem from Les Mis:
“There are men who seem to be born to be the reverse, the obverse, the wrong side. They are Pollux, Patrocles, Nisus, Eudamidas, Ephestion, Pechmeja. They only exist on condition that they are backed up with another man; their name is a sequel, and is only written preceded by the conjunction and; and their existence is not their own; it is the other side of an existence which is not theirs. Grantaire was one of these men. He was the obverse of Enjolras.”

Small bits of Enjoltaire that wouldn’t make a post on their respective own but! There is safety in numbers.
