I was having feelings about Victor Hugo's poem "Demain dès l'aube" (Tomorrow at Dawn) about his grief following the death of his daughter and Bruce losing Jason and I wanted to make a little comic with the text, but I'm scared to draw Bruce and can't seem to get the angel statue right, so here's a spotty translation of the poem so that you, too, can feel sad about it. Choices and sacrifices were made to keep the rythm and most significant parts, things got lost in translation that I couldn't salvage, but I still hope it helps sharing a little of its beauty.
Tomorrow as the land pales in the light of dawn,
I will leave for you see, I know that you await
I will go through the woods, and through the mountains high
I can no longer stay so far away from you.
I will walk with my eyes boring in thoughts my own
Unseeing any sight, unhearing any noise
Lone, and unknown, with a bent back and folded hands
Sad, and the day to me will be such as the night.
I will not gaze upon this dusk a golden fume
Nor the shade of the ships sailing to the harbour,
And then, as I arrive, I will lay on your tomb
A bouquet of holly and blossoming heather.
Victor Hugo, from the Poetry Collection «Les Contemplations» Book 4, Pauca Meae (1856)
This isn't even the poem I've read that fits them best, far from it, but I keep picturing Bruce walking from the cave (leaving the Robin suit) through Crime Alley to the cemetery and being sad about it and now you get to be sad too.

Citation A :
Citation D :
Et dire qu'elle est morte! Hélas! que Dieu m'assiste !
Je n'étais jamais gai quand je la sentais triste ;

favourite books? (fiction and non-fiction)
TOO MANY TO LIST but let’s try anyway:
Novels:
La vérité sur l’affaire Harry Québert, by Joël Dicker
Hygiène de l’Assassin, by Amélie Nothomb
The Shadow of the Wind, by Carlos Ruiz Zafón
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
All three are excellent treatises on the harshness (and sometimes cruelty) of the writing process, disguised as mystery novels. One of these is actually the reason I chose the name “Nina” for my OC, and eventually this blog! I had a much higher tolerance for darker content when I first came across these, so be warned.
Speaking of mystery novels, between the ages of 12 and 13, I read an impressive amount of Agatha Christie books. I feel like they deserve an honorary mention.
Plays:
Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand.
[ Shocked gasps from the audience ]
IT’S JUST SO GOOD OK. There’s a reason I reference it in fanfics all the time.
Poetry:
Les Contemplations by Victor Hugo.
Dude was a horrible human being, but he certainly knew how to write.
Comics:
De Cape et de Crocs by Alain Ayrolles and Jean-Luc Masbou.
Basically the ultimate fix-it fic, disguised as a tribute to French literature!
Tumblr media
(This cover makes me vibrate so much. See this man’s face? No, and that’s the point. But every reader knew exactly what to expect when they picked it up at the book store and gosh did Ayrolles and Masbou deliver.)
Childhood books:
The Pricesse Zélina series is what really got me into reading as a child! Just your typical story about a princess going on adventures, falling in love, and constantly outsmarting her wicked stepmother.
Additionally, these bad boys:

All of which are reliable sources of information about the real world. Probably.
Anyways, books. 📚

so my friends and one of my teachers know i'm reading les mis, and the general reaction seems to be "whoa haha that must be a sad book!" and like, obviously, of course it is. but also that that is the reaction is just amusing to me. yes, there are definitely several points throughout the book that make me feel heartbroken, outraged, and incredibly frustrated and just sad, but also i don't really focus on that so much? i'm just reading this book and for one thing, learning a lot about french history and random philosophers, but for another i'm enjoying reading it. i like it. it is (big surprise) a great book. and for a third thing, víctor hugo felt the need to elaborate on So Many Things that sometimes while reading it i don't even focus on the sorrow or whatever cuz im just reading about like, this silly little bishop or random events that happened in 1817 (iirc). i just find it funny when people say that.
