Film captured to commemorate the engagement between Crown Prince Leopold of Belgium & Princess Astrid of Sweden. The film shows scenes from the home of Astrid's parents, Prince Carl & Princess Ingeborg, then scenes of Leopold & Astrid at the city hall garden in Stockholm.

Who: King Leopold III Role: King of the Belgians Allegiance: Neutral

Belgium opted to remain neutral during World War 2 but was one of the many countries invaded by Germany in 1940. The King sprung into action to control the troops, a step that immediately riled the government and set off fierce debate between the King and Prime Minister. While the government went into exile, Leopold refused, stating he didn't want to abandon his people. He also refused to join the Allies, wishing to uphold neutrality. After the government fled, Belgium clung on but Leopold eventually surrendered, further infuriating the government as they had not been consulted which went against the constitution. After this, Leopold considered the war over. He was placed under house arrest and did little to improve Belgium's predicament. Instead he fell in love and married in 1941, alienating much of the public who had thought he was sharing in their suffering. Although Belgium was liberated, Leopold wasn't allowed to return until 1950 as the government chose to investigate his role in the war amid concerns about his conservative vision for his reign. While he was eventually allowed to return, his unpopularity led to his abdication in 1951. While other royals did more to collaborate or sympathise with the Nazis, Leopold's public image has been heavily shaped by the war, in part due to his vilification by the Allied forces who resented his surrender in 1940.

First of all, I would like to thank you all for this amazing year! It's been a pleasure meeting you all and I'm beyond thankful for your support.

Spread among 13 occupied and historic royal residences in the United Kingdom, the collection is owned by King Charles III and overseen by the Royal Collection Trust. The British monarch owns some of the collection in right of the Crown and some as a private individual. It is made up of over one million objects, including 7,000 paintings, over 150,000 works on paper, this including 30,000 watercolours and drawings, and about 450,000 photographs, as well as around 700,000 works of art, including tapestries, furniture, ceramics, textiles, carriages, weapons, armour, jewellery, clocks, musical instruments, tableware, plants, manuscripts, books, and sculptures.

Some of the buildings which house the collection, such as Hampton Court Palace, are open to the public and not lived in by the Royal Family, whilst others, such as Windsor Castle, Kensington Palace and the most remarkable of them, Buckingham Palace are both residences and open to the public.

About 3,000 objects are on loan to museums throughout the world, and many others are lent on a temporary basis to exhibitions.

Albert II (born 6 June 1934 -) is a member of the Belgian royal family who reigned as King of the Belgians from 1993 until his abdication in 2013. He is the son of King Leopold III and Queen Astrid, born princess of Sweden. He is the younger brother of Grand Duchess Joséphine-Charlotte of Luxembourg and King Baudouin, whom he succeeded upon Baudouin’s death in 1993. Albert II abdicate the throne for health reasons in 1993 and was succeeded by his son Philippe on 21 July 2013.

The former King is adorable. He definitely falls into the 'cute grandpa' category. Sure he’s getting on in years and a little past his best but I'd still do him in a heartbeat. And even if you think he is too old, he was a fucking king. You would fuck him and you know it.

He married Donna Paola Ruffo di Calabria (now Queen Paola), with whom he had three children; King Philippe, Princess Astrid and Prince Laurent with twelve grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. During the 60s, King Albert had an 18-year-affair with Belgian aristocrat that produced a second daughter, Princess Delphine. If I were alive in the 60s, Albert could have slept with me and not have to worry about admitting he fathered a child out of wedlock. What? He isn’t getting me pregnant.

Royal Tiaras Highlights: The Nine Provinces Tiara

The piece was a wedding gift on behalf of the Belgian people to Princess Astrid of Sweden, on the occasion of her wedding to King Leopold III of Belgium. It was made by 1926 by Van Bever. The complete version of the tiara has only been worn by Belgian Queens.

This piece is incredibly flexible. The original tiara was a meander bandeau topped by a series of large, round diamonds on spikes; it was able to be worn with or without the top pieces from the start. Queen Astrid added a series of interlocking diamond arches over the top of the large diamonds and Queen Paola has worn the meander base of the tiara alone as a choker necklace. Additionally, the piece can be worn with the arches but without the diamond spikes.

OTMAA Contemporaries: Belgian Royal Family

From left: Princess Marie-Jose, Crown Prince Leopold, Crown Princess Astrid (in back), Queen Elisabeth, King Albert I, and Prince Charles. The Belgians were distantly related to Alix and OTMAA via that Saxe-Coburg line, as King Leopold I, the first King of the Belgians, was the beloved uncle of Queen Victoria. Prince Leopold (future King Leopold III), was born in 1901, Prince Charles in 1903, and Princess Marie-Jose in 1906. Leopold's wife, Astrid of Sweden, was more closely related to OTMAA through the Danish family: her mother Ingeborg was a Danish princess and a first cousin of Nicholas II. There are photos of OTMAA with Astrid and her sisters in their childhoods.

1950: After World War II, Leopold III's position has become untenable. Until his dubious role during the war is clarified, the king remains in Switzerland and is not allowed to return to Belgium. His brother, Prince Charles, takes over his duties as prince-regent for six years. It is not until 1950 that a plebiscite is held. The question is simple: can Leopold resume his constitutional duties as king, yes or no? Under great pressure from politics and from the man in the street, Leopold hands over power to his nineteen-year-old son Boudewijn on August 11, 1950.

Two part question. First, Belgium was neutral at the start of WWII, so what reason did Germany give to justify their invading it? Second, what is your opinion of King Leopold III of Belgium? Do you consider him a collaborator? Does he deserve all of the hate for surrendering and then refusing to vacate the country with his family cabinet?

The pretext was that Britain and France were planning to violate Belgian neutrality and invade Germany.

I do not believe we can officially say he was a collaborator - he refused to administer Belgium according to German dictates and forced them to install a military government, although I'll be the first to admit that I know very little about Leopold III's conduct during the Belgian occupation.

I would say that he was made into a scapegoat to help explain the British evacuation from the mainland. In that sense, I think it might be considered unfair.

I can't disagree with the Belgians who had said he was not a symbol of national unity, or that he didn't cause a constitutional crisis with his surrender. I think the Belgians had every right to have concerns. What's notable regarding the Royal Question in Belgium in the 1950's was that there were also other political concerns regarding it that influenced the answer - Walloons, socialists, committed republicans, etc. would vote to maintain Leopold's exile regardless of whether or not they thought he was a collaborator, a threat to Belgian unity, or just a coward, just as monarchists, Leopoldists, and people who saw him as a positive expression of Belgian power or prestige would vote for his return and resumption regardless of what they thought regarding his conduct in the war.

Spread among 13 occupied and historic royal residences in the United Kingdom, the collection is owned by King Charles III and overseen by the Royal Collection Trust. The British monarch owns some of the collection in right of the Crown and some as a private individual. It is made up of over one million objects, including 7,000 paintings, over 150,000 works on paper, this including 30,000 watercolours and drawings, and about 450,000 photographs, as well as around 700,000 works of art, including tapestries, furniture, ceramics, textiles, carriages, weapons, armour, jewellery, clocks, musical instruments, tableware, plants, manuscripts, books, and sculptures.

Some of the buildings which house the collection, such as Hampton Court Palace, are open to the public and not lived in by the Royal Family, whilst others, such as Windsor Castle, Kensington Palace and the most remarkable of them, Buckingham Palace are both residences and open to the public.

About 3,000 objects are on loan to museums throughout the world, and many others are lent on a temporary basis to exhibitions.

Belgium has only held 1 referendum in its history. It was held in 1951 and it was called the ‘koningskwestie or royal question’.

The referendum was essentially about whether Leopold III should return to Belgium as a king or whether he should abdicate. He won it rather narrowly, only 57% wanted his return but the divide in votes was along linguistic and regional lines. The northern part (Dutch speaking) voted in favour of his return but the southern (French speaking) were against him. So whether he won or lost, either side would feel neglected and slighted. Not to mention a general strike broke out in the south and was one of the most violent protests in Belgian history.

I absolutely despise that guy and he should have been tried for treason (a comity after the war cleared him of treason).

When the nazis invaded Belgium in 1939, he was giving speeches about how he as king would never abandon his soldiers and his country. But in 1940 a constitutional crisis broke out, he believed that per the constitution he had the right to lay down the arms and surrender as he is the head of the armed forces. The government disagreed with his interpretation of the constitution, they believed the king only acts on what the government wants.

Moreover the government was planning to flee to London and set up a government in exile because frankly they had no hope of defeating the nazis. The prime minister urged the king to leave the country as well because other wise you’d give the nazis a valuable hostage. He refused (even before WWII he had a difficult relationship with his ministers and tried to expand his influence and powers). The government was afraid that he’d set up a government under Nazi control which would then ofcourse delegitimise the government in exile. So against his government, he stayed in Brussels and went personally to surrender Belgium. By surrendering he not only made a militarily but also a political decision against his government.

The government in exile said that this was unconstitutional and he was declared unfit to rule. But as the chamber of representatives couldn’t be called because Belgium was at this point occupied, no regent could be called upon.

After France fell the Belgian government dittered about, not knowing what to do. They sent messages to Leopold but he refused to reply to them and refused to reconcile with his government. The ministers at this point didnt know what he was doing and whether or not he was collaborating with the Nazis.

So during the Nazi occupation, Leopold III was going around saying how he’d suffer with his people and things like that. Then he went and married his mistress who was pregnant. This decision was seen as the king betraying the country even further.

He returned tot the country only in 1950 but he was met with protest. After the referendum which was too narrow, the protest in began. He decided (more like urged) to abdicate in favour of his son Boudewijn. Leopold III is the grandfather of Philip.

I can’t stand boudewijn either despite the fact that he was really popular in his lifetime.
