Just finished the show a few days ago, so that's why I'm only just posting this now.

I hate that the lemongrab arc is rlly disgustingly fatphobic because I rlly like lemongrab as a character and how hes a fucked up Frankenstein's monster who's... just "wrong". Even if pb says it's fine, it's clear she still can find no common ground with him and doesn't understand him. He's not what she wanted and he can feel it. He deeply wanted family and wanted to be understood. He wanted to have some kind of a relationship with her. With anyone. He sees her as his mom. His "glob". He's abandoned by what he considers god and mother and was aimless and confused. It got so bad that he became abusive towards the only people who maybe did understand him. Literally himself and his own subjects. His children and brother. Seemingly after he got what he always wanted he sabotaged everything and became obsessed with hurting and controlling the people around him, still letting his obsession with princess bubblegum control his life. Becoming warped reflection of her. A cruel and careless dictator who strips the freedom and humanity away from their subjects. Obsessed with control and indulging their own selfish desires with little regards for what would actually benefit them or their family.

He played the roles of both children, brothers. One who perpetuated the cycle of pain and generational trauma and the one who broke it simultaneously. Then they were fused into one single seemingly stable individual who had to deal with that baggage on top of the other complex feelings he already had. Discontent with himself and anxious he does something that can be seen as attempted or at least the contemplation of suicide but decides he wants to live and wants to be better than his former halves. he wants to recover and learn to live with other people like he's always yearned for. He wants to be a good ruler to his people. Idk.

Break down of Lemongrab (or something):

Lemongrab has similarities to PB the way her made up family members (Uncle Gumbald, Aunt Lolly and Cousin Chicle) did but he struggles unlike them. I think PB was trying to make an intelligent candy person and used part of Neddy to make him and when Lemongrab didn't act the way she had hoped she assumed his needs matched up with Neddy's

PB thought Lemongrab needed space, she felt she had failed him because he didn't find comfort in things she thought should be comforting and she couldn't understand him.

PB gave up on making intelligent candy people after Lemongrab because it seemed any candy person who wasn't dumb downed was going to be miserable no matter what

Also parallels can be drawn to Goliad - where Goliad was just doing what she was taught, when she was reprimanded and told she misunderstood/was wrong Goliad decided her way is best and that she must be right (driven by the mixed messages and contradicting information she received). PB deals with her by putting her into a standstill against her new brother

PB, Uncle Gumbald and Lemongrab all have a need for control, it takes different forms and reaches different degrees but the key difference is their motivations: PB wants love, Gumbald wants power and Lemongrab wants order. Though unlike Gumblad the other two have further motivations: PB feels she wants to protect people and Lemongrab wants to understand/be understood by people (there isn't enough time with Goliad to understand her motivations/desires even though she's also shown to be controlling)

Lemongrab was hurt when PB sent him away to live in a castle away from the rest of the Candy Kingdom, she saw him as a failure so he made a point to strictly follow rules - but no matter what he did he was told he was doing it wrong. He bent himself as much as he could just to still be called inflexible and unreasonable. Others couldn't see how much effort he put forward and thus he was treated as if he wasn't trying when he put himself into physical distress just trying to play along with PB's candy ways. So he became resentful

Since Lemongrab 1 was seeking connection with someone who wasn't even there (PB) the joy he felt towards the lemon people was short lived as apposed to Lemongrab 2 who was happy with being connected to the lemon people

The reason the lemon people are different from the Lemongrabs is because they don't have access to the exact ingredients

PB does care for Lemongrab on some level but she has no idea how to express it (and perhaps even fears that if she does he'll see her as weak and try to take her out like Uncle Gumbald did)

While Lemongrab sees PB as a mother figure I don't think PB sees herself as his mother, she created him sure but she assigns roles to her creations that don't always reflect that status

PB disliked whenever Lemongrab acted like her because of her own trauma with Gumbald which leads to some of Lemongrab's confusion (such as when she criticized him for watching her people sleep despite having cameras not just in her citizens homes but also cross boundaries by spying on other kingdoms)

Lemongrab 3 being a mix of the first two felt a struggle against himself, he ignored his conflict by focusing on order because order makes sense. He makes his kingdom into somewhat of a factory as he used rules, order and logic as a distraction from the overwhelming thoughts and feelings he had - similarly to how Lemongrab 1 did before him

When Lemongrab 3 is shown himself via Mathew's vision he is able to finally understand how he is himself, not just PB's creation. It's the first time he really saw himself and that allowed him to accept it (reading him as neurodivergent this could be aligned with getting a diagnoses)

After seeing himself and finding nothing wrong with him Lemongrab 3 starts to feel comfortable exploring more aspects of life instead of just being static and self contained the way Lg1 and Lg2 were (this also reflects how he's no longer letting PB dictate his life)

That exploring new things and actually living his life is what leads to him making a dating profile and meeting LSP (I'm honestly so confused on what the Adventure Time version of dating apps/online dating is since they don't explain if it was via tech or paper or magic or what but LSP does say "on your profile")

Either way Lemongrab is more calm about exploring new things but he also needs order so he is extremally put off by something seemingly small: food on a blanket. (As someone who's cried about a cup being in the "wrong place" I can relate to this intense feeling from something not being done "correctly")

Despite the discomfort and the fact they seemingly only started the date he still tells LSP that it had been nice

LSP thinks he's running away because he can't face his own feelings because she doesn't actually know him yet, they continue going on dates and LSP finds that Lemongrab says what he means. He would have told her if he disliked her without hesitation. LSP is so used to people ignoring her, placating her or lecturing her that she didn't expect someone to communicate in a way she could understand/wasn't condescending towards her

LSP is also pretty straight forward, she isn't great at hiding intention and she clearly states what she's thinking so after she realized she doesn't have to guess what Lemongrab is thinking they actually are able to communicate better then most couples in Ooo

Though LSP and Lemongrab wouldn't have worked out if they met before, they both needed to grow as people - neither of them were actually ready for a relationship before that point. Lemongrab needed to accept and become comfortable being himself/his own person while LSP needed to find out she didn't need to choose weather she wanted to love herself or others, that those things aren't mutually exclusive (if they interacted before it would have turned into the nastiest fight in all of the history of Ooo)

To summarize the 3 versions: Lemongrab 1 longs for PB's approval, he's aggressive and overwhelmed easily and is unable to handle the world being unfair. He is unwilling to take responsibility for himself/his actions and sees himself only as Princess Bubblegum's creation Lemongrab 2 doesn't care about PB's approval, he was made to make Lemongrab happy and he is Lemongrab. After making the lemon people and later Lemongrab 1's abuse he takes on the world view of people need to sacrifice themselves for the survival/greater good of others Lemongrab 3 is able to acknowledge being wrong easier then the other Lemongrabs since he has their residual (if not fully intact) memories. When he sees himself as not just the two before him he's able to start healing. He is now living for himself while realizing the impact he has on others, allowing him to not just be the calmest Lemongrab but the happiest. Unlike the other two he doesn't feel he has to fulfil a purpose

What’s the Candy Kingdom like in the Elemental sillies au?

life in the candy kingdom is extremely bad. first of all, it’s not just candy people that live there. because of the huge size of the candy kingdom(almost taking up all of ooo, for Gods sake), most of everyone lives under the candy kingdoms jurisdiction. if you were to walk into the candy kingdom, you’ll notice wanted posters everywhere. with the extremely, unusually strict laws in the candy kingdom, something as simple as a disagreement between your favorite color could lead to being classified as a criminal. As princess bubblegum puts it, “If there is never any conflict, everyone will be happy.” If you were to look closely, you would spot a horrifying amount of cameras, everywhere. there isn’t a spot in the whole kingdom where pb couldn’t watch you. Even worse, it’s not like you could secretly fly under the radar, because she’s tasked guards to watch every camera. so, really, the safest place in the whole kingdom would be curled up in bed with your head under the covers.

food is scarce, because pb puts all available resources into extending the kingdom farther and farther(much like lemongrab in that one adventure time episode who used all the candy to create more life).

pb has a personal guard entourage that she has protect her, including finn, lemongrab, and fern(surprisingly). Although, all three of them are secretly working behind her back to overthrow her. finn has complete access to the top of the tree that contains the lich, so he always knows that, if his plans fail, he would release the lich to destroy the kingdom. That’s kinda a bad idea, though.

i'm also thinking, on the subject of love intrests, mary jane as huntress wizard. now this mj i haven't based off of usm (and tasm doesn't have her) so i don't really have a basis for her. BUT. her and peter are always fated to be together so she of course would be what is finn's final love interest in normal adventure time ( :,) /pos) and i also feel mj's usual design would mix well with huntress wizard's. now i want to clarify i do not remember anything because i haven't watched adventure time in YEARS and my current rewatch is only in season 4.

DAY 5 in Twisted Strangetown: The One in Control

THE PREVIOUS DAY

Today marks the second day of staying with the Curious brothers in order to ease Pascal's worries. Due to this, we've had limited contact with the General, but I will assume that Boss has been able to resume communication with him.

My observations of the Smiths is that they are just normal (bruh). Further observation is needed. There's nothing particularly off putting about them that isn't any more off-putting about everyone else (you spent a whole day observing them with and your conclusion was this? This is why Ajay likes me more LOL). I admit it was nice to see other people with alien descent, though I wasn't a huge fan of the General talking about how all aliens were evil before proceeding to call Chloe and I "the exception." He was quite apologetic when he realized it offended me, however. I suppose he still has a lot to unlearn in regards to his alien biases.

I also overheard Pascal and Lazlo discussing a conversation they over heard Chloe having with Vidcund's kidnapper and her fuming over the riddle that he gave her in order to meet up with him in person. We've come to the conclusion that it might be an art museum, but it'll take some time to figure out which one. Either way, Chloe's recklessness may cause some hardships later (seriously? It ain't that big of a deal). We'll have to claim that the kidnapper was simply just trying to reach out to whichever family member will listen. Hopefully they will buy it.

C: So how's the subject doing, Aktu?

A: His name is Vidcund, and he's doing fine. I explained everything to him, and I think he's starting to cooperate. How are you feeling?

C: Really tired. And my head still hurts, but I'm sure it'll be gone in some time. What happened to the hat you always wore with that suit?

C: You realize that they could track you with that, right?

A: Good point! I'll give that to him as soon as I can.

I was just a teenager! What was I thinking, going up against one of the most powerful people in all of Strangetown? And what was [REDACTED] thinking, fighting a fourteen year old for power? A: Oh, shoot! You know him? That explains why the police came by with all those annoying questions. Cyd had to pretend to be Malcolm over the phone and act like he got abducted by aliens in order to get them to go away!

V: ...You're the worst criminal ever.

A: Well, it's my first time. So is that a yes or a no on the outing?

V: Eh, sure. Why not?

As I'm forced to remain in bed to recharge, I think about [REDACTED] and what they did. A part of me wonders what they have to gain from altering everyone's personalities. Power? Some sense of superiority that they have the ability to control everyone there? Fear of being discriminated against?

No matter. Once Aktu and I are done with this experiment, we'll be able to find a way to release Strangetown from the control of [REDACTED]. Peace will be restored, and Porthos and I can finally rest knowing that we've completed our mission.

I find myself VERY RESISTANT to this kind of shit so when the universe makes me feel like I want to hate a character I kind of go the opposite direction and love them harder than any of their fans.

For example I see so many infuriating takes with Catra and Hordak but I REFUSE to hate them. I insist on loving them more for all of their flaws, to be the one who loves them most for their character. I fucking adore those characters.

Maybe my opinion would be different if I was saturated by fandom like all the realtime watchers were? Like I'd be worn down.

I'm trying to think of other characters this DOES apply to.

For a show I'm genuinely obsessed with - The closest might be Lemongrab in AT fandom, he was super woobiefied by some people and some of those people were not particularly good to me or to the AT crew (talking events that happened over 10 years ago). I will be real it's nothing on the scale of what happened in shera fandom, and I still love Lemongrab as a character, but I avoid making anything with him in it because I don't want his fans to speak to me. Hoping the situation is different now.

There's also Simon Laurent from Infinity Train. I never particularly LIKED Simon, I find him interesting, but FUCKING HELL. TAKE ALL OF THE ABOVE CHARACTERS AND MULTIPLY IT BY 100. I was still getting messages from the "Simon Anon" A FEW WEEKS AGO SAYING THAT I NEED TO BOYCOTT INFINITY TRAIN because the creators said some stupid ableist about Simon, which they did, BUT IT'S NOT MY RESPONSIBILITY LEAVE ME ALONE. Anyone who is a Simon stan is usually completely terrifying, and is occasionally racist or sexist depending on their stance on Grace while defending their precious white boy. Once I entered a server and someone IMMEDIATELY asked me what my thoughts on Simon were, they were completely ready to start a fight with me over it and I've never felt more terrified in my life.

I also got sick and tired of Hunter quickly for pretty much the same reasons as Simon, though he's not written to be an evil incel like Simon, he REALLY IS the woobie boy that everyone considers him to be adn that's why I don't like him. I appreciate his character arc but ehhhhhh I couldn't stand him until the end of season 2 and during season 3 where it finally got past the "im going to be MURDERED by BELOS if i dont do EVERYTHING IMMEDIATELY" phase. The reason Catra never falls into this category for me is because she had supervillain energy and tried so so hard to regain agency and she kicked Hordak's ass and opened the Portal. Hunter meanwhile takes every hit, and I just... it is painful to watch, especially having been in situations of fear and psychological abuse. I don't enjoy it and I don't enjoy the fandom's TERRIFYING OBSESSION with him.

Zuko is almost a character I don't like. There is no anti-fandom for Zuko so I have no reason to stubbornly love him. People always compare every redemption arc to Zuko and I am fucking sick of it.

If it's a group it's ALWAYS Best Friend Squad 4 man, which makes sense I guess since theyre The Main Group but like... Q_Q i just want to include Entrapta and Scorpia and make it a BFS/SPT combo. Is that self indulgent of me? Especially when it's S5 fanart, I want more Entrapta because she was basically with them the entire time! Aaaaaaaaaa!!!!! I have a lot of thoughts on "4 man BFS" as an entity and why it works as an answer to s1, and why it doesn't work so well in s5, and why I am sad there was no s5 closure to sPT even if that is a dead sPT i just wanted one more scene--

wait that's not really what this question is about, we are crossing into canon wishlist but also fanfic modern AU territory and ALLLLL of my annoyances with how Adora and Catra's friend groups are treated in those. Like how Bow, Glimmer, Scorpia, and Entrapta are supposed to be their BEST FRIENDS but all become irrelevant and straight up absent once Catradora are together. Uhhh...

Okay more about Entrapta, a pet peeve is when people give her Normal Hair. Like, not absolutely insanely long rapunzel hair. Just normal hair. IT'S NOT RIGHT--- i guess people find it hard to draw her hair if they're going for a more realistic style?

I actually like most She-ra art I see though. It's very rare I see something that annoys me. There's not enough fanart posted in this fandom recently for me to have seen something that grinds my gears. All the catradora art is fucking gorgeous. I don't look at nsfw so I have absolutely no thoughts about any weird tropes like I would for other fandoms like AT where the fandom was a lot straighter and drew more demeaning stuff including the girls.

I don't have any really wild out there crackships, I don't have any "problematic pairings", but I usually get self conscious and cautious when I post Catrapta, or any Entrapta x a member of BFS stuff, LMAO. Even the normal fluffy stuff but especially the sex headcanon post yesterday with Catrapta. The issue is a lot of the time people are like "she's way older than the others???" and either I have to say "actually, that was a post by a character designer with no evidence in the show--" and I look like an idiot trying to justify something wrong, or I just say "theyre both somewhere in their 20s" and get it over with.

Dude, no, this is such a negative and bratty “waaaa i dont like seeing people have fun” projection onto fans. 

That is how fandom has ALWAYS operated. Big posts about themes were always more of a niche, follow-the-right-people thing, something you’d have to do yourself, maybe once a week in an active fanbase you’d have one of those go viral. The more frequent and sustainable fandom activity has always been the unbridled chaos you call a “vapid hellscape”. 

 And honestly I have a lot of fun writing posts and reading posts about deeper narratives but I also have HELLA fun watching people make quirky art, skrunklify their blorbos to unrecognisable levels, and find value in characters that the narrative couldn’t give a shit about. You watched all of Star Wars and you just wanna draw two clone dudes kissing? Fantastic! You watched all of Adventure Time and you only care about drawing Lemongrab x LSP? I have great respect for you. You read all of Homestuck, Danganronpa, or Game of Thrones and you only care about making soft happy fanart of the characters that were brutally killed off? You’re literally doing a service. 

Who the fuck are you to say people are enjoying things wrong because it’s too fluffy and braindead for your high concept standards? They're the ones literally holding their fanbases up by the decaying support scaffolds.

i dont think people can just enjoy things anymore. and i dont mean this in a "just let people enjoy things" way i mean people REFUSE to engage with and enjoy something for what it is. the way headcanons and quirky fanart and edits and aus comes before even Knowing The Basic Fucking Themes isnt enjoying something. i refuse to acknowledge it as enjoying any piece of art. it's commodification and i miss seeing blog posts that were essays abt the themes of something instead of people trying to make kwerky hcs abt how two guys can kiss. i get not everything is meant to be high art but id rather over-read something than live in the vapid hellscape of whatever people are doing in fandom these days

You are so correct about the lemongrab obsession never leaving holy crap. I used to watch the show back around 2013 as it aired on TV and I liked him a lot since I thought he was funny, I stopped watching for years but every so often I saw him somewhere and he always made me go "haha funny lemon:)"

Then in 2022 I decided to actually sit and watch the whole show, I was obsessed with him but nobody in my circles watched AT so he kinda just lived in my brain for a couple months, then fionna and cake came out and I remembered him but still didn't have an outlet for the brainwaves

Right now my friend is watching the show for the first time and I told myself I was gonna be normal and not talk her ear off, let her come to her own opinions and then maybe have a chat and stuff. Suffice to say I am Not Being Normal about it and it's our main topic of discussion everytime we call

Anyways sorry about the ramble but I wanted to tell you that your art is some of the visual aids I'm using to explain my citrus brainrot and she loves him now thanks to you! I hope once we reach distant lands territory i can also show her your wizard city stuff:)

Traveller of the positronic

 Summary: Princess Bubblegum has salvaged what remained of Lemongrab 2′s soul and placed it in a robot body so they can continue their duties as Lemongrab’s companion.

Word count: 1.1K (this is more of a drabble basically nothing happens! I might write a bit more if people want)

“Good riddance. Finally she has gone.” Lemongrab 2 watched Princess Bubblegum leaving from the window. They remembered the last time they saw her before their death, a single pink plait winking out of sight over the black wall of a fortress. At first they’d hoped that maybe despite the apathy she’d always had towards them, she would come back and they would be saved. But days became weeks, and the weeks of darkness stretched out forever. They came to realise in their heart and soul that she would never value them enough to come back for them. To her they were just a toy like all her other creations, and a broken one at that. And broken toys got discarded.   

Or fixed. 

Lemongrab 2 looked down at their new body, turning their hands over and over, listening to the click of the metal joints as they did so. Their entire body was made of a shiny, silvery chrome metal that made all sorts of clacking and scraping sounds as they moved, and they could hear a faint whirring from inside their head, which had to be the sound of them thinking with a brain made out of cogs and wires. The only organic thing they had left was the soul stone in their chest. 

They put a hand over the metal compartment it was kept in. The princess had taken their soul after it was released by death, and placed it in the stone. So now, they could inhabit this body she’d created for them. 

“And what about brother’s soul-” they’d asked in a panic, “-is…is hee?” The thought of having to see him again was so frightening. He would be so angry at them… Lemongrab 1 had never wanted to die, and especially not at the hand of someone he viewed as miles beneath him. It had taken them a long time to realise it, but they’d never really been a person in his eyes. Just a plaything. And when his plaything didn’t do what he wanted, he did what any petulant child would do and smashed it into pieces. 

“Your brother is gone.” She said it softly, as if she was breaking sad news to them. But they’d been overjoyed. He was gone! He’d never hurt them again! Gone! They were free! And then they had felt so, so awful for feeling that way. He was-had been, their brother. If it wasn’t for him, they wouldn’t even be alive. They’d never see his face, or hear his voice, or know if things would ever get better between them. They’d killed him. They were all alone now. It was nothing to be happy about. 

They looked over at the figure sat completely still in a chair in the middle of the room. His back was to them, so they could only see the network of stitches going across his back. 

“I suppose it is just the two of us, hm.” They squatted slightly in front of the slumped over, deadened lemon in front of them. His head was lolling over without any strength to hold it up, and his eyes were glazed, staring at them aimlessly. They cocked their head to the side with a robotic whirr and studied his face, searching his stitched together skin and sewn up lips for a flicker of familiarity, for the last person they wanted to see. But the only thing they saw was a reanimated corpse with no mind of its own. Or at least not yet. 

“Mee…” the thing crooned to itself, “Wee… wee…” it let out a groan. “I. Hee… Iiii… Iii…”

“Tell me about it.” They muttered. So this was it then. They were stuck with babysitting yet another Lemongrab, as if that hadn’t gone terribly enough the last time. 

They backed away from the listless figure. Yes. It had gone badly last time. But they weren’t going to let themselves get hurt this time. 

“Lemonhope…” they didn’t take their eyes off the figure, “are you still there my precious?”

“Yes.” came a small voice from the doorway. Lemonhope’s cut had been bandaged by Finn, and the Princess had offered Lemonhope a chance to stay in the earldom as a champion. She wanted him to be a knight. She thought he was a hero. But they’d looked at him from the work table they were lying on and seen who Lemonhope really was: a very small boy who’d just killed his father. 

He’d killed them too. 

“Hope. Come here.”

Lemonhope didn’t budge. “What are you going to do to me?”

They turned to look at him. “I will not hurt thee… very well, stay where you are.” They crouched down in front of him and tried to smile, but the metal mouth didn’t obey them. It was frozen in an expression of permanent apathy. “You did what had to beee done. I know it was unpleasant, but we are all free now.”

Lemonhope didn’t look any happier. “You are free now.” They added. 

“I will never be free.” said Lemonhope. 

They didn’t disagree with him. “You can stay in the earldom as long as you want- not as a champion but as a lemon. I will not force pretenses on yoouu. And… as much as I long for you to stay, I suspect you do not share myyy desire.” 

Lemonhope shook his head. “I don’t want to stay here. I want to have adventures and do stuff, I’ll come back when I’m bored. Which will probably be in a thousand years.” he shrugged. 

They would have smiled if they could. “I see. But until then, your cut needs to be taken care of.” 

“Yes. Is he going to stay like that forever?” Lemonhope asked. They glanced over their shoulder at the body and then looked back. 

“The princess said his brain and body will reknit and he will be a whole lemon, not just two halves. But when that will be… I cannot say.” They also had no idea what kind of person would emerge from the merging of two minds and two memories. “I shall be the sole leader for now.” 

It was an overwhelming thought. Their brother had never allowed them to handle the family finances and expenses - all the record books and bank letters were locked away in his room, and politically they never had a say in how he ran things. They were both earls on paper but in reality he was created in a special lab and engineered to be the heir of the candy kingdom, he’s actually briefly ruled over it, he had royal blood in his veins. They’d been created in a pantry and the only thing they had in their veins was lemonade. But now they had nothing at all, just wires. Could they really take his place? 

Did they even want to? 

They slid a hand under the other Lemongrab’s armpit and hoisted him to his paralysed feet. “Help me lead him to theeee guestroom.”

Fanfic Request!

Request: Fern and Lemongrab hanging out (or at least how I interpreted it) Word Count: 1.2K 

Thank you for the request! :v) I’ve never written for Fern before and I feel like as I haven’t thought as deeply about his character I probably messed him up quite a bit sorry about that! But it was fun to give him a go so thanks for the request, it was fun - I hope it ended out okay! I also ended up writing something a bit sad, but maybe also a nit hopeful? I do think they could be friends, I think Lemongrab has a lot he could teach Fern if that makes sense? It was interesting to think about how they’d interact together. I hope you like it :o) 

“When you put in a notice saying you needed the candy kingdom champion to help you I thought you meant slaying demons or some biz.” Fern had been trying to do something heroic to make up for failing Ooo in its time of need - when he’d been Finn work had always taken his mind off his problems and been a welcome distraction, if just for a while. And when he’d been in the Finn sword and not able to do anything but watch through a blue window, it had helped to be part of some fight for the greater good. But now, like everything else, it wasn’t working out so math. 

Lemongrab had thrown white sheets over his furniture and covered the floor in old candy kingdom newspapers. He set down the rest of the paint cans and looked up at Fern with a blank expression.  

“You unappreciate theeee struggles of interior design.” he stated flatly. 

“Yeah.”

Lemongrab used his claws to prise open one of the cans, and added a brush stroke to the wall. “Your opinion on the green.” 

Fern blew a raspberry. “Green stinks.” 

Lemongrab gave him a look but didn’t say anything. “Orange?”

“Cheese room.” Fern stated and looked around. It didn’t seem that anything dangerous was actually happening to the earldom. Lemongrab seemed to just need help with repainting his room of all things. Of course he had gotten stuck with the worst of Ooo’s royalty and the dumbest task ever. He never should have trusted a request for help from the Lemon earldom- everyone knew those weirdos were a bunch of b-lists. Finn was probably off slaying dragons or something else actually helpful. 

“Hm. Blue?” Lemongrab painted a light blue square on the wall. It felt familiar and calming to Fern.  

“Yeah that’s nice I guess.”

Lemongrab smiled and nodded. It seemed Fern’s job was over, and the admittedly boring distraction it had been was over now too. “Okay I’m going now.” he said glumly and turned to walk out.

“WAIT - yooouuuu think I can paint all this myself? Young man this body of mine is stapled together.” Lemongrab crossly shoved a roller brush at him. “Do theeeee high parts of the wall for me.”  

“You asked for a hero’s help to paint junk? Dude.” Fern frowned at him. He was starting to get annoyed at Lemongrab, and he imagined picking up one of the uglier colours and throwing it over him. 

“And what of it?” Lemongrab asked innocently.

Fern shifted. Finn wouldn’t have thought about throwing paint over anyone. Even someone as weird as Lemongrab. He felt guilty. “It’s not very hero-y.” he admitted. 

“You are helping mee… is helping people not what a hero does?”

“I don’t really know anymore.” Fern had given up and started slowly rolling the brush over the wall near the ceiling. The blue filled his vision slowly and he was reminded of peeking at the world through a blue peephole, back when he still had a purpose. Back when he at least knew who he was. “I’m no hero at all I guess. I couldn’t protect Ooo.”

“Is that what you are so upset about?” Lemongrab didn’t like thinking about what had happened with the elemental spell. It seemed Fern however couldn’t stop thinking about it. “Hmm… Yoouu have no elemental powers… there was not much you could do. LSP was the one who saved Ooo.”

“Finn helped. Finn got the jewels and… I was all junked up on rootbeer and being dumb.” Fern swiped the brush aggressively.

“I remember.”

“Oh my glob.” Fern remembered something and recoiled in horror. “That was freaking you wasn’t it. The pink guy.”

Lemongrab looked at him with a confused expression. Fern hurriedly leaned his brush against the wall. 

“I’m gonna go now.”

“Are yoooouuuu embarrassed?”

“No! I mean, maybe.” he clenched and unclenched his fists. “No?” 

“There was nothing you could have done plucky adolescent, eating root beer was byyyy far the least unacceptable thing anyone did under theeee curse’s influence.” Lemongrab said gently.

“I should have been stronger. If I was better I wouldn’t have gotten all janked up and pea brained.”

“Better how?

“If I was still Finn.” Fern said quietly. 

Lemongrab made a hm sound and sat on the floor, looking up at him, twirling his paintbrush in his fingers. “What is wrong with the way you are now?” 

“I hate it. I can’t do anything now and-and-” Fern wrung his hands and started pacing around, messing up the newspapers on the floor, it certainly wasn’t the first thing he’d messed up. “-Everyday I have to see a version of myself that’s who I want to be. I’m just messed up. Half of me used to be a sword… half of me used to be Finn…”

Lemongrab nodded in understanding. “Half of meee used to be a cannibal.” 

“-I just want to be Finn again… it’s not FAIR!” Fern grabbed hold of the ears on his hat and yanked them painfully. The pain brought a little bit of relief, it was a welcome distraction. “There’s already a Finn and everyone loves him more than they’ll ever love me. Bmo and Jake and- and everyone. If my parents were still alive they wouldn’t even know me for who I am. No one else does.” 

Lemongrab looked at him with wide, saddened eyes for a moment and didn’t say anything.

“I see.” he shifted, “I think that you are Finn in all the ways that matter.”

“Finn says I need to learn how to be Fern.”

“But you cannot create a new identity by avoiding your old one. Are you discovering a new self, or are you hiding from your Finnness?”

“What do you mean?” 

Lemongrab placed a hand over his chest. “I am Lemongrab.”

“Yeah?”

“I can only ever beeee Lemongrab. It is what I am made of, but, I am a different Lemongrab from the other Lemongrabs.” 

“So what?”

“Finn is Finn, and you are also Finn. But aaa different one.” He got back to his feet and resumed painting. “Perhaps it is aaaaa blessing as well as a curse, you are free to do the things Finn wants to do but cannot. Hm. Yes. Finn would never have come here and helped me, but now Finn has. Think of all the other places you can take Finn to.” 

Fern frowned. “I don’t get what you’re trying to say. I don’t want to do things Finn doesn’t do. I want to be a hero too… that’s what I’m supposed to be.” The room was almost fully painted now. It was almost like being inside the sword again, soft and blue and far away from anything else. Fern looked out of the window and saw the lemon earldom below, half expecting to see Finn’s face looking down at him. Huge and larger than life, the way he still was. While Fern was so so small and insignificant. 

“I seee…” Lemongrab said again, dabbing with his brush carefully. “However, neither of us can go back to the people weee used to be.” 

Lemongrab took a step back to stand next to him and Fern realised how much taller than him Lemongrab was. He supposed both the Lemongrabs had been older than him, but they’d never really felt like an adult to him. Lemongrab was more like an annoying teenager ,but now he actually felt mature in some way. It was sort of sad to Fern that he had to get blown up before he got any better. 

“Yes. This isss acceptable.” Lemongrab smiled pleasantly. “You may take your leave now, squire- stop by anytime! But hnnngh-”

“Call first? Yeah I remember.” Fern mumbled under his breath, and left.
