This is prompt one through six. I finally finished them and I’m honestly pretty happy with most of them. Page four is a little chaotic though, hopefully it reads okay. The next part is only four pages, so hopefully it won’t take as long to finish.

Steve rams against the invisible barrier of the cage he’s been put in. His shoulder hurts and around him other mers tell him to stop. But they don’t understand. Those two legged bastards stole his kids. They’re his and he had made promises. SNAP! He ignores the pain. Ignores the scent of blood that is his wounds reopening. They took his fry. His babies. They took them. He pounds on the barrier, wailing warbles coming from his mouth. Two legged beings gather. They point and their odd language is muffled. He just wants his fry. Please. Please he can’t lose anymore pod members. He can’t be alone.

Eddie watches as the newest “rescue” beats himself against the glass. Listens to his wailing. Flinching at each thud. No on goes up to the Alpha and it’s not just because he’s an Alpha. He’s a Lionfish. Sharp barbs fanned out and dangerous. His tan skin, what isn’t covered in bandages tell a story of pain. Eddie was born in this tank, one of the few fins folded in such a way that if he were released like his father was he’d be dead. Wayne had fought like hell- oh shit.

Hesitantly, slowly, he approaches. A raging Alpha doesn’t typically like it when another one approaches. Especially if the other Alpha is a shark.

“Please. Please, I can’t lose them too. Please.”

Eddie hadn’t seen his arrival. Adult mers were dumped into the enclosure, wounds and temperament be damned, pups usually went to the smaller pool up front until the humans were comfortable they wouldn’t be eaten alive.

“If you keep doing that the humans are going to think you’re dangerous,” he says softly.

The mer turns, teeth flashing in threat, head held high like Poseidon before his court.

“I am.”

“If you’re dangerous they won’t introduce any pups.”

The Alpha shrinks on himself. Like he’s approaching one of the actual sharks in the tank, ones he can see hovering held back by other mers, Eddie reaches out. Places a hand on the other Alpha’s shoulder. Draws him in for a hug.

“If they aren’t returned to you by tomorrow, I’ll bug my favorite human.”

He doesn’t know this mers name. Just knows that he smells of the ocean, of salt and freedom and things Eddie has only dreamed of. He knows that despite being dangerous and deadly he curls up in Eddie’s embrace. Mate. Eddie’s never been good at this. Tends to run when he can, not that he’s fast. Amphitrite don’t let him mess this up.

how do you picture merman gas and soaps tails? i know they are sharks, but you do mention their tail wrapping around the reader’s legs. thanks!

in my mind, it's something like this.

when Gaz or Soap wrap their tails around your leg (and drag you into their lap), it feels smooth one way and rough the other. if you've never touched sharkskin, you can run your fingers toward the shark's tail and feel something like suede; run your fingers back the opposite way and it feels like rough-grit sandpaper. technically shark skin is composed of scales--ribbed, dragonesque scales layered like shingles on a roof. more like teeth than skin, which helps is one reason they can glide through the water so fast.

i personally like the idea of the 141 shark mer with 100% shark skin rather than human skin/scales/disneyesque hip petals. also love the idea of each one having unique coloration and marking based on the types of sharks they mimic! perhaps consider a tiger shark, a pretty whale shark, a lemon shark, or a sandy zebra shark.

in terms of their size versus remora reader (shout out to @kaysav608), remora reader is much smaller. maybe it's not as extreme a size difference as a remora and its host in real life, but similar principle--the host is built like a murdertank, and the remora is pocket-sized for easy transport.

in my mind, remora reader is maybe half the size of her hosts. could range from 2/3s to 1/3 as long. also, it's not that they're super tall and she's short. she is proportionally built smaller. i see something like this or this.

but also, how you envision them in your mind's eye is up to you :)

Zebra Shark | Potion Mishap

Yup! I am doing the trope of "a potion gone wrong, causing our Prefect to become a mer-person!"

I was conflicted between a lemon shark and a zebra shark. But I liked the patterns of the zebra shark during their transition from pup to adult shark.

Also, the way I colored water; it's giving 2000s aquarium core.

If you're wondering who is what, never fear for I am here! Here's a list!

Impulse is a Shark

Skizz is a Remora

Pearl is a deep sea fish (based on multiple fish found in the deep sea)

And after much convincing by my friend @lonleyzodiac , my friend convinced me to add XB as a Humuhumunukunukuapua'a, or the triggerfish. Yes I watched Octonauts as a kid, how can you tell?

Anyways, basic story time!

At an aquarium by the coast, there is a connecting facility that runs a Mermaid rescue, care and rehabilitation center, focused on giving mers a safe place to stay when they won't be able to survive in the wild or help nurse them back to healthy states so they can be released into the wild again.

Issue is that sometimes the mers can get a bit attatched to the humans and eachother so they refuse to leave.

All other Hermits, Empires members and even the yogcast lot work in the care center. Some of them work in the labs with medicines and understanding Mermaid biology, psychology and other -ologys. Meanwhile the others work with the mers in taking care of needs like food and environment. They also have an action squad who go out and perform actual rescues for mers who are in danger.

Some mers have permanent issues that mean they can't survive properly in the wild so they take up permanent residence. Some you can obviously see such as Mumbo and XB. Mumbo is missing a tentacle and XB lost half his tail. Others are there but harder to see such as Pearl's scars for her missing fins, and Scars scars for how hes constantly finding trouble, and Cleos damaged fins due to their frailty (this does not stop them being a sassy lil shit all the time, they do not care). And then there's Scott who has no sting in his stingers, Tango who has very poor eye sight and immune system, and Grian who was a mer raised out of the ocean and thusly has zero survival instincts.

The others are all there either because they got attatched to eachother or the humans. Some, like Impulse and Skizz, make up for this by actively helping out around the facility by finding other injured Mers outside who need help.

And then others aren't hurt or anything, just there because they already have a bond to other mers who were hurt. Joel is a special case as he is literally just there because he has fallen for Lizzie. Scott mentioned the concept of the word wife once and now it is Joel's favourite word.

And before I get any questions, yes Bdubs is a Mer. He looks like just a pufferfish, but he can speak very clear English.

Oh yeah. You can understand Mermaids when they are underwater, but above the water, they sound like they are talking gibberish. Fun thing is the mers can understand eachother above the surface, it's just humans who can't understand them.

shark reader and Floyd would be so cute. Opposites attract is my fav troupe. Shark s/o is like a calm reserved mer and Floyd is just…. A menace 💀💀

A cute lemon shark s/o would be a great fit for Floyd “The Menace™” Leach. They're highly social and calm, especially for a predator, wild lemon sharks will sometimes approach divers for pets! Over all, lemon shark s/o is chill, slightly bigger than Floyd, and will allow Floyd to bite, scratch, and squeeze them to his heart's content as long as he follows up with a kiss.

Floyd, on the other hand, wants to try to find their weak spot that will eventually break them until they toss him with their tail 50ft into the nearest current. Then it's a game of “who can throw the other one farther”? Hint: it's not Floyd.

It's a good match though, as Floyd, believe it or not, can actually mellow out if he has someone that will go with the flow and indulge him occasionally, as long as they aren't a doormat and can be firm on when certain behaviors have a time or place.

Relative size reference and anatomical ramblings below cut.

Here’s a vague size comparison thing for all of them. And a human for perspective

I really, desperately want to make an illustrated guide to my merfolk lore, because it’s extensive and I’m really proud of it. But that sounds slightly overwhelming, so idk, but here are some random scraps that pertain to these four. My fish mers aren’t allowed to have hair; they have a variety of different fins on their head to mimic it instead. Oviparous fish (e.g. remora) lay their eggs and their mer counterparts do likewise, and therefore don’t have nipples and/or breasts. Eggs of ovoviviparous fish (e.g. manta ray) hatch shortly before giving birth and do not consume anything resembling milk, so their mer counterparts do not have nipples and/or breasts. Viviparous fish (e.g. lemon shark) essentially nurse when in the womb, so their mer counterparts nurse after having given birth and have nipples and/or breasts. Mammals (e.g. monk seal) are self explanatory.

Also most animals hatch or are born with navels, because even in eggs, there’s a cord from the embryo to the yolk sack. Oviparous and ovoviviparous creatures just tend to be better at healing the scar. However, I’ve decided that mers are not as good at healing the scar, and thus, have bellybuttons.

Lemon shark TFA bumblebee getting put into a tank with big flying fish/great white shark hybrid Blitzwing because the researchers think bee is too small for blitz to breed (he's been managing to screw every mer that's been stored with him) only to find out they're wrong a few months later.

Bee being super enamored with the big mer he's sharing a tank with and Blitz being apprehensive, he's never had a mer actually desire to court him rather than just a quick breeding frag, especially not one as tiny as him. Eventually he finds himself catching feelings for his tank mate too (especially because he isn't bothered by his faces) and finally accepting Bumblebee's desires. They have the rowdiest breeding to the point that the tank gets foggy because of the sand and the staff thinks that they're fighting, only to have Blitz in random mode begin to frag bee against the glass as a show of dominance. Once he's nice and definitely knocked up, the staff try to take him out and Blitzwing ends up severely injuring one member before they just decide "well he likes this one, well let him keep it"

And soon there's a bunch of cute baby mers swimming around their tank <3

YEAH, tfa merformers. Large horny fucked up sea monster Blitzwing getting to breed tiny little Bumblebee <333 The little fish was never safe from getting bred, he was just humouring the facility staff for a while... After a while the staff finds the tank fully obscured by sand and everyone panics so hard until there's a violent thud against the glass, and Blitzwing is pounding away into Bumblebee like his life depends on it. And Bumblebee is gladly bucking right back against him...

Bee’s gonna be so fat with pups it’ll be hard to swim… The staff is worried about the size difference, but Blitzwing is so territorial they can't really do anything about it, just watch as the little mer gets fatter and fatter, until eventually, Blitzwing has to agree to help him move around the tank....

Fun fact! Lemon sharks are prone to a lot of jealousy and are known to chase off tigers sharks that get close to the divers they’ve bonded with. Aku the lemon shark and Atsushi the tiger shark ☺️

akutagawa was under the impression that you liked spending time with him—at least, that's what you told him before when you boldly claimed that you weren't scared of him. so why were you spending so much time with someone else now?

atsushi, from his research, was a newer mer to the area. someone must have found him wandering around and allowed him to stay. was that why he didn't understand that you were his human companion? akutagawa didn't consider himself a possessive person, but something akin to dark, vile jealousy bubbled inside him when he saw atsushi bashfully giggling when you stroked his hair, happily obliging your requests to see him spin, admiring the way his scales shone under the moonlight. akutagawa stared down at his own dark, boring tail, a bitter taste in his mouth. humans always did have a liking for pretty things, didn't they?

if you wanted to explore underwater caves, he knew them better than atsushi did, and he was a much better guide, wasn't he? not constantly yapping your ears off as you dove. but maybe you liked the more social aspect of atsushi, something he didn't have. so once again, he felt sidelined by this stupid tiger. he felt like he had been replaced.

obviously, he couldn't express these feelings to you. humans were kinder than mers, weren't they? you wouldn't understand his feelings of selfishness and envy, his natural hatred for the other shark mer. but what he could do was scare off atsushi—as long as he didn't run off to complain to you about it. so he does exactly that, swimming too close to the other mer, glaring at him every time they cross paths, making an obvious show of his longer friendship with you—visiting you right before he knew atsushi would, bringing you rare and precious treasures that he knew you liked, all to prove that he was obviously the stronger and more suited mate for you.

it's not like atsushi would fight back, anyway.

WIP Wednesday (9/11) | Mer Roadtrip AU (Part 64)

"You're probably right. We can pick up that sort of thing after we find a car," Abram says. Then he wonders exactly where they're gonna 'find' a car. He's got money, but no ID or credit. So he'll have to make a deal to pay in cash, no questions asked. But that might prove difficult. This is precisely the reason Abram hadn't gotten himself a new car yet.

There's definitely a shady used car lot around here somewhere, he remembers Romero bitching about the guy who sold him that heap they tried to cook him in. He doesn't want to go there, doesn't wanna get screwed into buying a lemon. But who else would let them buy a car? They look like homeless kids. They are homeless kids. Fucking hell. Running was much easier when he had his mom to do the 'adult' things. It was much easier in general.

After he pays for Andrew's new wardrobe, they find a map of the mall and locate the beauty store Andrew mentioned. But, just Abram's luck, it's closed today. Of course it is. Abram buries his annoyance and he drags Andrew to the food court, where they stuff themselves with Chinese food and, in Andrew's case, an ice cream cone. (What a nutritional breakfast.)

"Anything else... on your little... wish list?" Andrew asks between licks. Abram mentally starts to check things off, then stops to give Andrew a look.

"Wish list?" Abram repeats. The other mer raises a brow before biting through his ice cream cone like a shark. After he chomps it up and swallows, he explains.

"I was awake this morning when you were making your shopping list. I saw you with your pad and pen, mumbling to yourself about how it would be nice to get some new shoes. Do you always talk to yourself like that?"

"I..." Abram licks his lips. Does he talk to himself? He didn't think so. But it would make sense, he's been alone for weeks. He's got to fill the silence somehow. He'll have to be more careful. "No, I don't."

Andrew hums like he doesn't believe it, then shoves the remainder of his ice cream into his mouth. Abram unzips his duffel and pulls out his notepad, crossing off the things they've obtained thus far. When Andrew leans over into his space to read it, Abram tries to hide it against his chest out of habit.

At Andrew's low, "Abram," he lays it flat on the table. Andrew snatches it up instantly.
