This is prompt one through six. I finally finished them and I’m honestly pretty happy with most of them. Page four is a little chaotic though, hopefully it reads okay. The next part is only four pages, so hopefully it won’t take as long to finish.

Baby shark Andrew was cranky and Aaron said “okay it’s nap time”

So shark mers can’t actually stop moving for long periods of time but baby mers aren’t born with the ability to swim while sleeping. So they sleep on various pod mates or really anyone that will carry them. Being steadied like this is important for their development since it teaches them to sleep on their own as the get older.

Andrew was separated from his pod/school not too long after birth, and the only reason he made it past the infancy and toddler stages was the kindness of other mers. Other pods of sharks and whales, or mothers with their own children, or a very kind lone gray whale carried him around and took care of him when they found him, for as long as he would let them. Until he got spooked or upset and swam off again. Because of the lack of consistency in his care and the countless times he nearly suffocated in his sleep, Andrew to this day has a harder time sleeping on his own than most grown mers, not for lack of trying. Luckily, once he’s reunited with Aaron and a manta ray Nicky that Aaron tells him is essentially an adopted cousin, it doesn’t take long for Aaron to realize why Andrew is so tired all the time. It’s no harder for him to pull Andrew around on his back now than it was when they were little. And while they’re there, Aaron realizes that yeah, it is kind of nice to have someone he can sleep on, too. Even if he doesn’t really need it. (Nicky offers to piggyback the twins but he is far too smooth and slippery. Which doesn’t seem to be as much of an issue when Andrew takes little power naps on Neil but shh.)

Im sure it’s not uncommon for adult mers to sleep on each other at any age, but if anyone questions why Andrew is always sleeping on Aaron, Aaron gives them a death glare and makes sure Andrew never hears their stupid questions.

Also an another thing about the Mer AU! Since Vivosaurs doesn’t exist this AU, what do mers have for pets if any and do they have phobias that’s ingrained into their DNA code? 🐢😱

1. Having pets as a mer is really risky. Some mers do have pets (like certain kinds of fish, or maybe a sea turtle, or a ray of some kind), but chances are any mer who isn't the owner will just eat said pet. Some mers will mark their pets either with dye or some kind of clothing, and that will keep most mers from mistaking a pet as food. Unfortunately some mers will just not care and those are the ones who get mauled to death by the owners.

2. All mers are instinctively afraid of anything bigger than they are, and are also naturally wary of humans.

Hawaiian inspired Mermaid

Much like last year.... drawing historical mermay just inspired me to draw more historically inspired mermaids. It lit a fire in me to finally finish enough for my next coloring book! I still need plenty more however, so far I'm at 30 mermaids... wish me luck :D

I had initially hoped to make the Hawaiian mermaid a jellyfish but tragically the Spotted Jellyfish were my strongest shape & design contenders. Spotted Jellyfish are disqualified on the basis of being an invasive Australian species of Jellyfish. The other jellyfish options I could find were all sadly too clear to make into a jellyfish maid. So I pivoted. (Every time I see that word I hear a certain sound clip) While looking at other marine creatures that live in/around Hawaii I scrolled past the Manta ray... and how could I resist? Moana got me good with the association game.

This opened a new box of challenges. How to make a mer-ray without making it look like someone riding a ray? I went through a few options before eventually landing on this design. I based her accessories on the attire of performers from various Merry Monarch competitions, but sadly a skirt made the idea less clear so it was defeated.

🦈 the boys are scheming

Ramble under cut!

Killer: based on the Black-tipped Reef Shark and a Thrasher Shark. His tail is long and whip like but you can’t appreciate it’s length bc it’s out of frame. He uses it to give his prey a concussion.

Horror: is a whale shark because he is a big softie, a gentle giant. I can only have so many octopi, and next to a shark of some kind that’s my second choice for him.

Dust: manta ray. My logic behind this choice works like this; hoodie = soft + covers you = blanket. Blanket + fish = stingray. Manta Rays don’t have stingers. But I gave Dust one anyway.

Dream/Molt: I was torn between a classic fish tail for him or something with tentacles. So I drew three forms for him. his designs are loosely inspired by cuttlefish and a specific killifish I’ve lost the name of.

Because Molt’s goop is tied to his role as a Guardian of Positivity of the multiverse, I was torn about whether not his mer-form should be goopy. I’m still indecisive about this.

If we went with his cuttlefish form, just like real cuttlefish he would be able change the color and texture of his body and tentacles. He can’t change the color of his bones or magic, of course.

This also one of the few AUs that you get to see the damage done to his ribcage. If only bc he doesn’t have three layers of fabric to hide it.

Regardless of the kind of mer-skele, Molt steers clear of deep open water. The scars across his ribs are a literal beacon in the dark, as his magic glows, and are just as likely to attract a predator as they are to attract curious small fish. As dusk falls, Molt hides himself away in caves and crevices in the reef or cliffs. He is a day time hunter by choice, but his brother still prefers to hunt at night.

Nightmare/Rem: i had two ideas for Rem, Octopus or Orca. Orca, because of the general importance that family plays in their social dynamic. And Octopus for classic fandom interpretation reasons.

If we are using the octopus type mer for Rem; like his brother, he can change the pattern and color of his body but not his bones or magic. Though he can change his color to almost any hue he wants, he prefers dark colors.

The dark markings on his bones may or may not be natural, and may or may not be caused by the same incident that nearly shattered his brother’s bones. :)

Relative size reference and anatomical ramblings below cut.

Here’s a vague size comparison thing for all of them. And a human for perspective

I really, desperately want to make an illustrated guide to my merfolk lore, because it’s extensive and I’m really proud of it. But that sounds slightly overwhelming, so idk, but here are some random scraps that pertain to these four. My fish mers aren’t allowed to have hair; they have a variety of different fins on their head to mimic it instead. Oviparous fish (e.g. remora) lay their eggs and their mer counterparts do likewise, and therefore don’t have nipples and/or breasts. Eggs of ovoviviparous fish (e.g. manta ray) hatch shortly before giving birth and do not consume anything resembling milk, so their mer counterparts do not have nipples and/or breasts. Viviparous fish (e.g. lemon shark) essentially nurse when in the womb, so their mer counterparts nurse after having given birth and have nipples and/or breasts. Mammals (e.g. monk seal) are self explanatory.

Also most animals hatch or are born with navels, because even in eggs, there’s a cord from the embryo to the yolk sack. Oviparous and ovoviviparous creatures just tend to be better at healing the scar. However, I’ve decided that mers are not as good at healing the scar, and thus, have bellybuttons.
