hey chat i got really in my head about how solas leaves clues for lavellan to follow for TEN YEARS because he wants her to save him from himself and then i got in my head about how every time she asks him to abandon his plans he says some iteration of, “i can’t,” never, “i won’t,” “i don’t want to,” etc.

i’m so sure someone has said this before— i haven’t seen it but i know the dragon age girlies (genderless) are feral for a theory— but is he himself “mythal’s creature,” as he tells lavellan she will be after the well of sorrows? all through inquisition/ trespasser/ the years that follow, can he literally not stop himself because everything he did with the veil is tied to vengeance for mythal?

is he truly counting on his friends (or his heart) to save him because he can’t?

my gut reaction was no…! because i feel if the IMF existed in the topgunverse then they already would’ve recruited maverick!! That’s not to say that maverick and ethan hunt are the same—they’re very much not… but i do mean to say that the mission in TGM IS an impossible mission!! the IMF is a militarized branch of government like the CIA or FBI… it could be well within “their interests” to hire a daredevil pilot with a strong sense of “morality” like mav, and they could make a use case argument for stealth planes the way the CIA did. lol.

i do think Ethan hunt is deeply heterosexual in a way mav is not. i also think, were they ever to meet, mav would still somehow get in his pants

“Was this before or after?” Jackson ran his hand along the scars that ran up East’s forearm, wrapping around his bicep. They were different from the others - fainter, cleaner. Medically precise.

East wanted to talk about it. He had asked Jackson to ask him about his scars, to remind himself that they weren’t some innate part of him. (To be seen by the man he loved.) East gently pulled his arm from his husband’s hands, wrapping Jackson in a hug from behind where they sat on the couch.

“…happened there.” He didn’t need to be any more specific. “Same with my fingerprints. And my side.”

East absentmindedly pulled a hand under his shirt, feeling the faint ridges of the scar patched over the side of his ribcage.

For a few moments they sat in quiet, the football game on the television subtitled but muted.

(The hearing aids stuffed into his skull struggled with too many noises on bad days. Today wasn’t a bad day, but it wasn’t good either.)

“…do you want to tell me what happened?” Jackson didn’t look up at his husband, the television’s glow reflected on his glasses.

“Tattoos. Needed to remove identifying marks.”

They needed to remove anything that would let the Wolf remember he was more than a weapon, that he had a life before that hell, that he used to be a person. The kind of person who got tattoos, not that he could remember what they even looked like.

“You ever thought about getting new ones?” Jackson’s voice was soft in its curiosity, not demanding an answer. East kissed the top of Jackson’s head. His hair was starting to thin, the poor old bastard.

“Sometimes.” He sighed, breathing the smell of safety and home and goodness in his arms. “…I want it to be what it was. It was important, probably. But I don’t remember what it was, so I don’t want to…make a mistake.”

(He didn’t want to desecrate the memory he didn’t have of something so scared he had it etched in his skin.)

More minutes passed in quiet.

“I’m sorry they took that from you.” Jackson sounded on the verge of tears, and East couldn’t stand to see the man cry, so he huffed with feigned annoyance.

“They took more important things than some ink.” The statement was sobering, but he continued blithely. “I’m sure I’ll get drunk one day and have something stupid put over it. Maybe I’ll be lucky and I’ll remember what it was if I’m fucked up enough.”

Jackson was quiet. Quiet in the way he was when he wanted to tell East a firm no. When he wanted to look at East with eyes brimming with pity and anger and other emotions he knew his husband would flinch from.

East stayed quiet in turn, kissing his husband’s shoulder and burying his face against his neck. (Safe. Home. Good.) He wasn’t watching the game anyway.

I spent six years of my childhood in the developing world, where school uniforms were the norm (you only wore street clothes if you went to private school). It was a Roman Catholic girls’ school and we had overalls:

--that’s a photo from the paper of some kids from the same school from like four years ago and the uniform hasn’t changed since I was there in the eighties lol but anyhow! 

There was something that felt very genderless about our school uniforms. Maybe it was because it’s a girls’ school, so that stripped out a lot of the comparison between us and boys. Maybe because there wasn’t a strong sense of social pressure, since the school was in the city and none of us lived nearby (I lived rurally! On cane estate lands in fact). The expressions of personality we were allowed were very restricted -- earrings that fit the dress code, and hair bobbles/ribbons, that was about it. 

In a way I do feel that going to girls’ school, being in a uniform for six years, got me to a certain baseline confidence level in who I was as a girl and the way I was allowed to express it. Girlhood was the same as personhood to me because all of my school peers were kind of in the same boat. Our bodies weren’t really the locus of self-expression because we all looked the same, so we decorated our books in varied fashions, found little niches of behaviour, even knew each others’ preferred shades of blue ink for our fountain pens. I was known for creating a prediction table of what our teacher’s outfits meant for the day’s activities (a certain tan dress worn with a red belt meant we were Getting a Test! I still remember it lol). 

When we moved back to Canada and entered the public school system here, the other girls were fascinated and perplexed by our clothes. I was unselfconscious enough for that to not bother me at first, but this time we lived in the neighbourhood and I started hanging out with those girls and the socialization set in HARD. Clothes for school suddenly became hugely important and, curiously, when I moved from a grade school in a super-wealthy neighbourhood to one in a middle/lower-class neighbourhood, the pressure to be wearing the ‘right’ clothes increased tenfold. My identity as a girl became PROFOUNDLY wrapped up in how I dressed.

Lots of the time when I see discussions of school uniforms for girls they’re characterized as being symbols of control, or squashing of individuality, or sexually titillating. My St. Gabriel’s uniform wasn’t any of those things! I truly missed it when I had to switch to wearing street clothes at school. It had freed me up from having to compete with other girls and/or be concerned about fitting in with them; it was something I didn’t have to worry about amidst all the other stuff I was trying to figure out. It was a featureless container for the actual me, which was the important part.
