Nirvana in Fire Character Reference Sheet Roughly in the Order Those Characters Are Introduced
For @howdydowdy, as promised, and for anyone else who, like me, is terrible at names and needs some kind of “Who?? Ohhh right. That guy.” reminder.
Basically, my Nirvana in Fire Journey started with me watching half the first episode, being wildly confused, realizing I was in over my head re: names and thus deciding to go back to the beginning and watch it again But Taking Notes This Time. I watched the whole show with a notebook and pen at my side. I figured I may as well spare you all the labour by typing it up.
As more information was revealed, I often added it to a character’s initial note, but by and large I’m leaving those extra notes out so you can experience the joy and confusion and anguish of New Information yourself. The exception to this is generally a person’s name, title, and position. E.g. Duke Qing’s name, Bai Ye, isn’t mentioned until a number of episodes after he’s first mentioned, if I recall correctly, but knowing that the person named “Bai Ye” is the same person called “Duke Qing” is exactly why I took these notes for myself in the first place.
Basically this isn’t intended to be a character guide that lays out exactly who a person is, their relationships to the other characters, and their place in the story, but rather something you can look at whenever someone mentions a name that jogs your memory just enough for you to be able to place to person. Which is why the notes tend to be either the context in which the person was introduced or the relationship through which they’re introduced.
Some names and notes are inherently spoilers, but hopefully by virtue of the fact that this is broadly in the order a character is first mentioned/introduced, you can avoid spoilers simply by not scrolling down too far. For those persons where their name or an alter ego comes in significantly after their initial introduction and is a spoiler, they are listed a second time starting with the “new information” and with the note in italics indicating their original entry (there aren’t a lot of these, don’t worry).
I will readily admit that some of my handwritten notes are just a name and then a blank space because apparently I just never actually added a note for them. I haven’t bothered adding those people here. Yes it’s because I’ve forgotten entirely who they are, but I’m pretty sure that means you’ll be okay if you immediately forget who they are too. (That being said, I get the sense there are actually relevant people missing from this list. As the show carried on and introductions became less frequent, remembering them became less difficult.)
The List
Lin Xie –> Commander of the Chiyan Army
Lin Shu –> “Xiao-Shu” –> Lin Xie’s son –> Mei Changsu --> Chief of the Jiangzuo Alliance --> Su Zhe
Lin Chen –> Young Master of Langya Hall –> NOTE: The “Lin” of Lin Chen and the “Lin” of Lin Xie & Lin Shu are both written and pronounced differently. These people are not related.
Northern Yan’s 6th Prince –> Now Northern Yan’s Crown Prince
Minister Xu –> Da Liang’s envoy to Northern Yan
Prince Yu –> Xiao Jinghuan –> 5th Prince of Da Liang
Xiao Xuan –> Emperor of Da Liang

Xiao Jingxuan --> Crown Prince of Da Liang --> metonym is “Eastern Palace”
Zhuo Dingfeng --> Master of Tianquan Manor
Zhuo Qingyao --> Eldest son of Zhuo Dingfeng --> guy on the horse and later the guy helping the old couple on the boat and later also the guy who calls Xie Yu “father-in-law” (I am telling you this specifically because I am not bad at faces but this guy added so much confusion to my life that was cleared up the moment I realized these people were the same person. And also because my mother is terrible at faces and for like 15 episodes every time he showed up in another random place I would say “that’s horse and boat guy” and she would say “wait what? really???” So I’m assuming at least one other person will share in this struggle)

Ltravelingstrawberry replied to your post “Can we appreciate for a moment that Su Zhe was the person tapped by...”
Well, TECHNICALLY it wouldn't be the candidates writing about why they deserve to marry Nihuang like some sort of college admission essay. It would be testing their knowledge of literature and such. But this is still a hilarious idea for a crack fic! :D
No but that’s actually my favorite part! I agree “Five reasons I should marry the princess” would be a truly fantastic piece of crack fic, and one I would read in a heartbeat, but I’m actually even more entertained by the original “in depth analysis of the confucian classics” version.
Because like, yes on some level this is all about who gets to marry the princess, but the final call on that is actually going to Nihuang, who can beat Jingrui and Yujin AT THE SAME TIME and therefore will not be marrying anyone if she doesn’t feel like it. Changsu’s part in this particular setup is actually “are these people good enough writers to marry the princess” and as someone who grades papers for a living I think this would be hilarious.
Here’s why:
We know that on top of everything else Lin Shu was a really really good student. A prodigy in fact. Entrusted with the jade cicada from his teacher because he’s just that awesome. At this point he’s top of the Langya list of scholars. Even if his entire life is consumed with this complicated revenge plot, this doesn’t suggest a person who is indifferent to scholarship. To me it suggests someone who is actually going to care what these people write, both for Nihuang’s sake and because “Sima Lei you have fundamentally misunderstood the themes of this chapter that’s not how that works where are you even getting this from?” or “Liao Tingjie your sentence structure is a mess and these metaphors don’t make sense... there are TWELVE MORE PAGES OF THIS??” (I’m assuming it’s an essay exam but I don’t actually know much of anything about the format of these exams, particularly during this era)
Mei Changsu strikes me as the sort of person who would be borderline offended to be grading a bad exam, particularly with Nihuang’s hand on the line.
On top of that, with Jingrui and Yujin specifically they are his little cousins. He grew up with them, and his exchanges with Yujin at the hunting palace suggest that he played some sort of tertiary role in their education. Maybe just as proximate studying people, maybe some actual informal tutoring scenarios. I’m not sure. But my guess is on some level he does genuinely care about how their education turned out. So he wants them to do well except then that means he’s recommending them to Nihuang which is ... weird. Like the last time he saw them they were adorable children and now he’s trying to set them up with his ex???
With Yujin specifically I think this goes one of two ways, both of which are kind of hilarious to me:
1. Yujin is sort of a mess, as Jingrui implied he might be, prompting a lot of “WTF Yujin I taught you better than this! wait they definitely can’t know that ugh what is my life.”
2. Yujin, unbeknownst to Jingrui, is actually low-key brilliant. I’m actually pretty persuaded by this idea. Like, at the beginning of the show Yujin is sort of a buffoon so it doesn’t seem that weird that Jingrui would think his friend can’t pass this test. But as the show progresses we come to see that he’s actually way smarter than he usually chooses to show. He’s also really into the arts. Like, the first thing we learn about him is that he loves music. So maybe Yujin passes the exam with flying colors and Changsu has to recommend him to the emperor all “Yan Yujin (my tiny cousin who used to follow me everywhere, who I once trapped in a tree for an entire afternoon, who used to cry when Nihuang and I wouldn’t let him practice sword forms with us) is a scholar of surpassing insight and the most suitable candidate to marry her highness princess Mu (what is my life what are my choices).”

Koneru Humpy outclass Lei Yingjie to become the World Rapid Chess Champion of 2019
Koneru Humpy is the new World Rapid Chess Champion. The Indian Grandmaster claimed the title after drawing the Armageddon game against Lei Tingjie of China in Moscow. Humpy won the 12th and final round game against another Chinese Tang Zhongyi, to force the tie breaker against Tingjie.
“When I started my first game on Day III, I did not imagine I would be at the top. My hope was to reach top three. I didn’t expect to play the tie-break games.”
Koneru Humpy took a sabbatical from Chess from 2016-2018 due to the birth of her baby. But she won the world title within one year of her return to Chess. The win is further more significant because she is more a classical format player rather than the rapid format.
“There was no time for the preparations too for this event. Worked a bit on the Openings and I am glad to have pulled it off.”
Humpy had a good beginning to the event, scoring 4.5 points in the first five rounds. But her loss against Irina Bulmaga of Russia put her in the back seat. Humpy came back strongly and won the last two rounds.
Humpy next lost the first tie-break game but then won the second to reach the Armageddon. Humpy drew black colour which meant that a draw was enough for her to clinch the gold. She got a winning position after a tactical stroke that netted her queen for a rook by move forty. Twenty-six moves later Tingjie agreed to draw in a hopeless situation.
Konery Humpy won the gold followed by Tingjie who won silver and Ekaterina Atalik who won bronze. As per Humpy this is the best year for her because she won the FIDE Women’s Grand Prix series, picked 30 crucial ELO points to be world No. 3 and now this world championship title.
It is not going to be easy for sure and this World championship is different from that. But I will continue to give my best shot to realise that goal too.”
