20230705: today's LEGO countdown to Space Day! was the small promotional "vehicles" set 30549 from 2020 with 59 pieces. my countdown started with a build highlighting humanity's draw to space and the creativity space inspires in us and I've slowly been working through the LEGO sets focusing on the science and research required to put humans in space. today's build is all about the mechanics we're building to help us understand space and foreign environments before we actually travel there. 30549 was a neat little promotional set with the idea of building your own vehicles. in this case, I chose to build a micro-scale communication relay tower, an aerial drone, and a robot that could walk around with the assistance of a propeller. things that are effective aren't always the most aesthetically pleasing, and I wanted to use all the pieces found in this set :) I will also suggest that if you enjoy space but aren't paying attention to NASA's tumblr account, you probably should, as it's such a great source of information on things happening in space and how everything is all connected :)

Belus-07 Locomotive

Here's a MOC of a locomotive from one of my favorite indie games, The Final Station.

It's a dystopian game about a train conductor trying to survive an apocalyptic event by riding this experimental locomotive across the vaguely Eastern European countryside.

The artstyle feels very inspired by Simon Stahlenhag.

Belus was a series of experimental locomotives within the dystopian apocalyptic fictional universe of The Final Station.

There was only 8 locomotives in total, with the series discontinued after the main project supervisor went missing and the project team going bankrupt, ceasing production and maintenance of the Belus locomotives whatsoever.

According to the game wiki the train's wheel arrangement is supposed to be 6-2-0 (I am not versed in train wheel patterns).

I love how, even with how goofy and silly and immature MK can sometimes be, he's still a really clever character that's good at putting things together, especially in ways that the others might not think about. Being a little unserious and jocular and excitable are not inherently bad things, and they are not things that automatically mean that someone is stupid, no matter how distractable or fun-loving they might seem.

He's also very aware of his shortcomings, and is learning how to cope with his problems. I do like how they have it so far to where MK isn't getting over his problems right away, and acknowledging that sometimes things are just gonna... stick. It's a part of you, and it may stay that way for a long time. But it's livable, once you figure out how. You can even make it work for you. Take that same energy, turn it on its head, and put it towards something else. Not just coping with a problem, but learning ways to redirect it. It's really nice that this is out there, and that kids can see it. Whether or not all of them will pick up on the lessons is another matter; but I think that that some of them can, and have the opportunity to, is important.
