20240403: the History of LEGO Castle day 094. 6007 Bat Lord (1997, 16 pieces, 10 different parts) DRAGONS!!! The Bat Lord is a small set consisting of a black dragon with trans neon orange wings spouting trans neon orange flames and a Bat Lord minifigure. The one minifigure in this set has a black helmet with bat wings on either side, a yellow minifigure head with an inverted "V" hairline, pointed eyebrows and mustache, a light gray cloth cape with bottom fringes and a black bat with red accents, black arms with a printed red torso with a yellow and black collar, five vertical black lines with rows of yellow dots, a silver belt, and dark gray legs with a black belt. The black dragon, which is built from a body, two arms, a tail, a top head, two trans neon orange wings, and a trans neon orange flame, was first introduced in this set and the body appears in three other sets, 4818 Dragon Rider, 6047 / 6099 Traitor Transport and Traitor Transport With Cave, and 6097 Night Lord's Castle. This is also the first use of the trans neon orange wings, though those appear in seventeen more sets from 1997-2005. This set also introduces the light gray cloth cape with the black bat design on the back. The main focus of this set is the brand new black dragon! This is the only set I purchased when it originally came out since I stopped buying LEGO in 1993 when all the castle sets had minifigures with facial hair. I actually clearly remember buying this set because the black dragon is absolutely fantastic and made me so happy :) New in the box from 1997, this set cost $4.50 and it's been worth every penny, as this is also the one LEGO set I brought with me to undergrad and has stayed with me for the past 25 years. Parts inventory for this set can be found on BrickLink or Rebrickable and a free download of the instructions is available on ToysPeriod.

Wandering Fright Knights
~~~
Was originally going to have these guys invade Faradin, but I figured it’ll be too much invading after the recent attack by the Masked Man. This shot was the best of the much I shot, so I’m uploading it here!
Nexo Knights as a show was such a non-serious piece of literature. Like we got Clay dropping the most gut wrenching lore about his mom being this mad woman working towards the destruction of the kingdom he loves, and the reaction? “Lol sucks to suck”.
But god if Nexo Knights was written under the idea of it being goofy AND serious, Clay’s story arc could’ve been so much more beneficial to the plot. And the same goes for many of its characters. You mention Clay and his vacation episode, I’ll mention Aaron and Fright Knight because eugh, while I love it, I hated the ending of it with Aaron’s little scaredy cat moment. They missed such a golden opportunity to explore his own fear that was so buried deep under his brash confidence and comfort to chaos, even Whiparella’s magic couldn’t find it. The fear of nothing. Not being able to do anything. Being trapped, immobilized, vulnerable to witnessing everything collapse around you. The fear of being helpless and not knowing what to do.
Aaron’s resourcefulness has been the saving grace to the knights on several occasions, and the fact we could’ve gotten a deeper understanding of his worst nightmare in the S5 we never got irks me. Especially since he became leader of the knights and now had to care about everyone, not just himself and the ones closest to him. He couldn’t be rash. He couldn’t be reckless. Every action he does now affects not just all the people around him but also the kingdom as a whole. And when the kingdom falls apart, infecting the squirebot population and shrouding the land in real terror and taking away his greatest strength in combat and usefulness and gets trapped in giant spider webbing, what can he do? Nothing.
But that’s just my take. I fully agree on Clay’s character arc. The show threw so much onto him without giving him a chance to evolve and grow from it and maybe see that while he can’t please everyone as a knight, that shouldn’t stop him from chasing the dream he’s pursued all his life. Not even after the Gray Knight. Especially after the Gray Knight when the realm sees him as some horrid monster, not their protector. There’s nothing wrong with taking a step back from leadership to relearn the root of your morals. Thats how we grow. We fuck up. Then we get up, clean ourselves off, and learn not to trip over the same rock twice.
But again. Nexo Knights was never a serious show. Just a goofy one with an episodic rhythm and the most beautiful ideas for solarpunk medieval fantasy. A boy can dream for more tho 😔
Clay had angst potential or going into depth about his fear.. especially when it affects him straight after losing someone.
Let me explain really quick (because apparently people like when I full on complain or talk about interesting things about this what.. 8-9 year old lego show..)
I love his character so much, but the show just kinda shoves things about them into your face without adapting onto them, an example of this is Clay and his fear of failure or failing people. In terms of how this genuinely builds his character (and how I can use this to rewrite him??).
Especially when you get more context about his fears in ep5 and how he quite literally cannot focus (or function properly for that matter) of he feels as if he’s fucked something up, or in other words completely failed them.
In episode 1/2? (can’t exactly remember) he thought that he already failed at being a knight because he couldn’t do the one thing for Merlok, and that was to protect him, and that was because Merlok sacrificed himself to protect Clay instead.
I get that this is some sort of beginning to character development, but theres no way the lingering fear that he completely failed merlok isn’t there even after he semi returned in episode 2
(I’m a sucker for his character.. I really am, but the way WAY TOO MUCH goes ignored is actually going to give me a headache)
Oh my god, okay okay.. nobody walks away from a horrible fucking place that was quite literally threatening, or quite literally being cruel people and act as if it was all fine and dandy. (I KNOW it involved an evil book but that isn’t really an acceptable way to just downplay the way the hotel was treating people)
I can’t really explain how but I absolutely hate that episode with every bone in my body, I cannot stand it. (and that says a lot, usually I love episodes focused on a specific thing)
20240406: the History of LEGO Castle day 097. 6047 / 6099 Traitor Transport / Traitor Transport with Cave (1997, 145 / 146 pieces, 93 / 94 different parts) DRAGONS!!!! The Traitor Transport and the Traitor Transport with cave is mostly a light gray wagon cage with a decorative red roof and yellow and black highlights built on a black base with brown 33mm wagon wheels pulled by a black dragon with trans neon orange wings. This set comes with three minifigures. -The Bat Lord has a black helmet with bat wings on either side, a yellow minifigure head with an inverted "V" hairline, pointed eyebrows and mustache, a light gray cloth cape with bottom fringes and a black bat with red accents, black arms with a printed red torso with a yellow and black collar, five vertical black lines with rows of yellow dots, a silver belt, dark gray legs with a black belt, a chrome silver sword, and a trans red 4L antenna pole with a black bat on top. -The next minifigure for this set has a red torso with silver scale mail print and black arms, plain blue legs, a yellow minifigure head with brown bangs, mustache, and beard, a black knight helmet with front grill, and a medium white feather plume. -The last minifigure has a black axe wielder helmet, yellow minifigure face with black bangs, mustache, and forehead tuft, a printed light gray torso with red Fleur de Lis pattern, dark gray legs with a black belt, a black whip, and a triangular Fright Knights shield. The black dragon, which is built from a body, two arms, a tail, a top head, two trans neon orange wings, and a trans neon orange flame and the body appears in three other sets, 4818 Dragon Rider, 6007 Bat Lord, and 6097 Night Lord's Castle. There's not too much in the way of rare or unique parts in this set but the light gray horse barding with ruffles and printed red design with black harness lines was only found in this set and 6097 Night Lord's Castle and this is the first appearance of the light gray triangular Fright Knights shield with a black bat and red highlights on a silver background with a red border (which appears in five other sets, 5383 Castle Accessories, 6031 Fright Force, 6087 Witch's Magic Manor, 6097 Night Lord's Castle, and 9376 Castle Set from Education and Dacta). The brick built attachment for the dragon to the wagon is the most articulate wagon harness we've seen yet, allowing for the most versatile movement yet. The dragon can even be next to the wagon, facing the opposite direction! Also, this is probably the easiest to use cage or dungeon from the castle subthemes yet :) The only difference between 6047 and 6099 is the large studless dark gray dragon cave that came with 6099 (not pictured here). Parts inventory for this set can be found at BrickLink or Rebrickable and a free download of the instructions is available on ToysPeriod.
The Night Rider
In the long dark nights, Farinworth is often visited by a Chilling Fright Knight General. Fortunately there are brave defenders in the city ready to fend him off whenever he threatens the people of the city!
This is my entry to BrickCentrals’s How is Started vs How it’s Going Contest!
Tumblr media
How it Started: I started photographing LEGO mostly just to show off the cool minifigs and nice that I owned and built. I mostly stuck with superhero stuff and would often try to recreate scenes from movies and comic books. The backgrounds were usually just a black canvas with some small builds here and there. The lighting was monotone usually relying on a couple of desk lamps and the focus of the shot was usually on the figure I wanted to showcase.
Tumblr media
How it’s going now: Instead of relying on recreating scenes from existing media, I take photos to showcase my original story. I use more dramatic lighting and rely heavily on color changing RGB led lights to set a proper tone and atmosphere for a shoot. Lights are set all around (in front of camera, behind builds) to properly balance and light up the scene and highlight some background details. Instead of plain black canvas background I use more elaborate builds to fill up and create an atmosphere that complements the minifigs that I am featuring in the story. I try to utilize practical effects as much as possible using smaller lights and mini water misters, but also continue to use photoshop to create effects that are otherwise impossible practically. Learning to balance the two is something I want to continue to work on.
New Fiction 2023 - September
"Baruch" ed. Richard Challoner (1752)
A short interlude before another juggernaut of a chapter.
Creature Teacher by R.L. Stine (1998)
They really hold out on the monsters here in Series 2000, so this is a welcome entry.
Invasion of the Body Squeezers - Part 1 by R.L. Stine (1998)
An unnecessarily long red herring.
Invasion of the Body Squeezers - Part 2 by R.L. Stine (1998)
That's some way to prevent an extinction event.
I'm Your Evil Twin! by R.L. Stine (1998)
They always do the ol' switcharoo.
Revenge R Us by R.L. Stine (1998)
The Uncut Gems of Goosebumps.
Fright Camp by R.L. Stine (1998)
Fool me several dozen times, shame on us all.
Headless Halloween by R.L. Stine (1998)
Here we GOOOOO. A+ Goosebumps.
Attack of the Graveyard Ghouls by R.L. Stine (1998)
A bit weirder but still more welcome than kids being dicks and no actual spooky happenings.
Brain Juice by R.L. Stine (1998)
Just bizarre. Leaning a little too far into the weird science angle I've no interest for in these books.
The Deadly Experiments of Dr. Eeek by R.L. Stine (1996)
Nope. These gamebooks aren't good for reading one after another, and the ones that more or less stay in place are especially meh.
Night in Werewolf Woods by R.L. Stine (1996)
Another meh entry in spite of the werewolves running around.
Beware of the Purple Peanut Butter by R.L. Stine (1996)
More weird science and generally not scary stuff, less and less interesting.
"Hotline Miami" by KC Green (2023)
The speedrun.
"I was told by my doctor that this'll completely compensate my human meat diet" by scribblingchimp (2023)
Gotta find an alternate.
"Carl's Date" dir. Bob Peterson (2023)
Good to see the gang again.
The Equalizer 3 dir. Antoine Fuqua (2023)
Didn't need to do all that.
Bottoms dir. Emma Seligman (2023)
The kids are alright.
Elemental dir. Peter Sohn (2023)
A personal story.
They Live dir. John Carpenter (1988)
That's a long fight.
Jawan dir. Atlee (2023)
The Robin Hood we need.
Christine dir. John Carpenter (1983)
Somehow, a car is scary.
The LEGO Movie dir. Phil Lord & Christopher Miller (2014)
Too familiar, but perhaps because it kicked off something we've seen a lot of since then.
Outlaw Johnny Black dir. Michael Jai White (2023)
A fun and shooty romp.
Satanic Hispanics dir. Alejandro Brugués , Mike Mendez, Gigi Saul Guerrero, Eduardo Sánchez, Demián Rugna (2023)
The anthology offers much.
Prey dir. Dan Trachtenberg (2022)
Hell yes. If they made Predator movies that are just "a Predator fights someone at this point in history" I'd be all in.
Tales from the Crypt Presents: Demon Knight dir. Ernest Dickerson (1995)
Definitely a feature-length version of an episode, but they pull it off.
Tales from the Crypt Presents: Bordello of Blood dir. Gilbert Adler (1996)
Or do they? But this is still better than...
Tales from the Crypt Presents: Ritual dir. Avi Nesher (2002)
A very boring movie like this.
Vault of Horror dir. Freddie Francis (1973)
Ooh that second story is tops.
Tales from the Crypt dir. Freddie Francis (1972)
This first movie was just a tad too straight-faced. Where's the camp?!
The Origin of Evil dir. Sébastien Marnier (2023)
A-n-x-i-e-t-y.
The Expendables 4 dir. Scott Waugh (2023)
I know they can't all come back every time, but the concept seems to be slipping away from them.
The Creator dir. Gareth Edwards (2023)
Hm. Striving toward something I might've liked but somehow doesn't land.
Tales from the Crypt - Season 7 (1996)
I've been annoyed with many people writing off season 7 as not worth watching. It's fine! There's even a few episodes really worth watching.
Tales from the Cryptkeeper - Season 1 (1993)
Basically Goosebumps, so John Kassir recording wraparounds is what makes it special.
Star Trek Strange New Worlds - Season 2 (2023)
I like it, but 10 episodes is not enough. Bouncing from fun to deadly serious episodes too often makes it feel disjointed.
