Nexo Knights as a show was such a non-serious piece of literature. Like we got Clay dropping the most gut wrenching lore about his mom being this mad woman working towards the destruction of the kingdom he loves, and the reaction? “Lol sucks to suck”.
But god if Nexo Knights was written under the idea of it being goofy AND serious, Clay’s story arc could’ve been so much more beneficial to the plot. And the same goes for many of its characters. You mention Clay and his vacation episode, I’ll mention Aaron and Fright Knight because eugh, while I love it, I hated the ending of it with Aaron’s little scaredy cat moment. They missed such a golden opportunity to explore his own fear that was so buried deep under his brash confidence and comfort to chaos, even Whiparella’s magic couldn’t find it. The fear of nothing. Not being able to do anything. Being trapped, immobilized, vulnerable to witnessing everything collapse around you. The fear of being helpless and not knowing what to do.
Aaron’s resourcefulness has been the saving grace to the knights on several occasions, and the fact we could’ve gotten a deeper understanding of his worst nightmare in the S5 we never got irks me. Especially since he became leader of the knights and now had to care about everyone, not just himself and the ones closest to him. He couldn’t be rash. He couldn’t be reckless. Every action he does now affects not just all the people around him but also the kingdom as a whole. And when the kingdom falls apart, infecting the squirebot population and shrouding the land in real terror and taking away his greatest strength in combat and usefulness and gets trapped in giant spider webbing, what can he do? Nothing.
But that’s just my take. I fully agree on Clay’s character arc. The show threw so much onto him without giving him a chance to evolve and grow from it and maybe see that while he can’t please everyone as a knight, that shouldn’t stop him from chasing the dream he’s pursued all his life. Not even after the Gray Knight. Especially after the Gray Knight when the realm sees him as some horrid monster, not their protector. There’s nothing wrong with taking a step back from leadership to relearn the root of your morals. Thats how we grow. We fuck up. Then we get up, clean ourselves off, and learn not to trip over the same rock twice.
But again. Nexo Knights was never a serious show. Just a goofy one with an episodic rhythm and the most beautiful ideas for solarpunk medieval fantasy. A boy can dream for more tho 😔
Clay had angst potential or going into depth about his fear.. especially when it affects him straight after losing someone.
Let me explain really quick (because apparently people like when I full on complain or talk about interesting things about this what.. 8-9 year old lego show..)
I love his character so much, but the show just kinda shoves things about them into your face without adapting onto them, an example of this is Clay and his fear of failure or failing people. In terms of how this genuinely builds his character (and how I can use this to rewrite him??).
Especially when you get more context about his fears in ep5 and how he quite literally cannot focus (or function properly for that matter) of he feels as if he’s fucked something up, or in other words completely failed them.
In episode 1/2? (can’t exactly remember) he thought that he already failed at being a knight because he couldn’t do the one thing for Merlok, and that was to protect him, and that was because Merlok sacrificed himself to protect Clay instead.
I get that this is some sort of beginning to character development, but theres no way the lingering fear that he completely failed merlok isn’t there even after he semi returned in episode 2
(I’m a sucker for his character.. I really am, but the way WAY TOO MUCH goes ignored is actually going to give me a headache)
Oh my god, okay okay.. nobody walks away from a horrible fucking place that was quite literally threatening, or quite literally being cruel people and act as if it was all fine and dandy. (I KNOW it involved an evil book but that isn’t really an acceptable way to just downplay the way the hotel was treating people)
I can’t really explain how but I absolutely hate that episode with every bone in my body, I cannot stand it. (and that says a lot, usually I love episodes focused on a specific thing)
#lego nexo knights#nexoknights#stupid rant aside I will forever hate the ending of fright knight#please let Aaron and Clay and Macy all have overlapping leader arcs#this is why rewrites exist yall
