Levi
10. Could you be best friends with them?
Mikasa, Hange, Levi, Eren
17. A ship about them that you're fine with and you don't hate?
Mikasa, Hange
20. The ideal best friend for them?
Hange, Levi
thank you for the looong ask @quillsandblades, it was so great thinking about these!! (plus you asked me all about my four faves!)
For the character ask game!
2. Favourite canon thing about them:
Eren: his damned determination. Eren fights for his dreams, he fights and he just doesn't know when to give up. This just doesn't exist in his vocabulary.
Mikasa: her strength, especially emotionally. That girl will live, she will keep moving forward even if she's lost it all. How she longs for peace and fights for it. How she loves, deeply and certainly.
3. Least favourite canon thing
(This question is the reason why it took me so long to answer this, especially for the Ackermans. I just couldn't find anything negative.)
Eren: he never?? addressed his feelings for Mikasa?? I'm not saying this as in "Eremika was badly written", no, it was beautifully written, but Eren just ran from his feelings because he's a damn idiot. He planned a free future but forgot to live in the present. Also how he straight up left in Season 4, it ruined me.
Mikasa: She and Eren didn't have a proper conversation in the Paths like he and Armin did (although there's a canonical and logical reason about that one). Also she killed Eren. That was Not Cool, Isayama.
Levi: His Ackerman ancestry wasn't acknowledged properly. No bonding moments with Mikasa. Not wondering what the Ackermans even are, what their purpose is. It was brushed off entirely. "Guess I'm an Ackerman now. Oh, shit, I'll have to do tons of paperwork to legally change my name."
5. First song that comes to mind when I think about Hange?
Bauklötze, forever and ever. It's her song now.
But besides that, Curses by the Crane Wives
There's a fire in my brain, and I'm burning up Oh my, oh my Keep running for the sink, but the well is dry Oh my, oh my Every word I say is kindling But the smoke clears when you're around Won't you stay with me, my darling When my walls start burning down, down, down?
before you kill me, no, it's not because of the fire rather than how overwhelming everything is.
("won't you stay with me, my darling/When this house don't feel like home")
How out of place she feels. But the melody is still cheerful because despite everything, she's still Hange Zoë.
6. Something I have in common with Eren and Hange
I dream big
I get excited and passionate
but my soul can feel heavy at times
8. Something the fandom does that I don't like
Mischaracterization throws me off big time in fanfiction. I don't finish if a central character is ooc. Examples I can think of right now are: Eren being depicted as a "bad boy". I don't mean "rough and a little rude", that's just Eren. I mean substances and lack of respect (towards women, especially Mikasa) etc.
For Hange, it throws me off if the ooc version of her is a damsel in distress and/or passive.
Now, specifically for Levi, I don't know if the fandom is still obsessed with him or if they've moved on. He is a great character, but the obsession was a little too much. I bet that Levi would consider himself overrated if he knew what was happening in the real world.
9. Could I be roommates with Levi?
Sure! I'm not that organised or tidy if I get used to living in a space, but I'm quiet and I respect boundaries. He'd tolerate me, I'd make him cards for his birthday, we'd watch movies together and comment on how much the script sucked. I'd help when he'd be too constipated to communicate things like feelings with Hange. She'd be my friend, I'd invite her over and Levi would be jealous of how well she and I are getting along.
10. Could I be best friends with them?
Mikasa: not best friends, but if we clicked, we'd make a great duo. We'd hang out in silence. Whenever we talked, it would be about something deep and we'd be satisfied until our next discussion.
Hange: yes! I'd tag along in her experiments, she'd read my stories. She'd inspire me to study and learn more, and have fun with it. Who wouldn't want a friend like Hange?
Levi: I don't think so. But his heart is in the right place, so we'd hang out and drink tea together and communicate in a civilized environment (?) about recent findings. Plus in the aot extended universe we've established that we're roommates, so we get along just fine.
Eren: possibly! I'd have to run behind him and therefore we might argue a lot, but I care about that idiot so I don't mind. We'd be thick as thieves. And unlike his current best friends, I'd make sure he addressed his feelings properly.
17. A ship I'm fine with and I don't hate-- Mikasa and Hange
I did not expect that question, but let me tell you, I had so much fun. Because I get to share a dumb crack headcanon of mine.
Of course my favourites are Eremika and Levihan and I wouldn't care about the ships at all if Mikasa and Hange were with other people. But hear me out:
Mikasa x Reiner. That would be hilarious if it was confirmed post canon, so much that I wouldn't even be mad. I even headcanon it jokingly. In all seriousness, Mikasa died single. But in none at all seriousness, imagine her with Reiner, who is canonically terrified of her. Imagine if they got married post canon for the tax benefits or whatever and they're basically only roommates. Reiner gets scared out of his mind every morning when he sees Mikasa because she's the focal point of his PTSD.
For Hange, Zekehan, since we're talking hilarious ships. As I've mentioned in my study on Zeke's role in Levihan, it intrigues me how a character who's not remotely interested in romance is portrayed in some fanfiction to be interested in Hange (and how under different circumstances he totally would have a crush on her, hands down). I don't like it but I don't hate it either.
20. The ideal best friend for Hange and Levi?
Each other, all the way. They're meant to be together in every way possible, significant other, best friend, co-captain. They're so different yet they manage to fit together so well and they communicate wordlessly because they know the other one's soul. It could never have been someone else. In every universe they find each other, and in every universe, they're best friends.
(you should know about that 😄)
Thank you again swordslinger! 😉

“mikasa and eren are antisocial af so they probably end up talking bc they’re little losers lol, and eren probably can tell mikasa is bored and here’s this gorgeous model, so he’s gonna whisk her away and they go to his ranch they have a romantic night under the stars and all that but he’s dumb and doesn’t get her number and she goes back home to ny without it”
DORKS!LOSERS!*AFFECTIONATE*
them slipping out of the room all giddy!!!!!!!!!! him not getting her number is sooodooooso my doodoo head…….. he’s already resigned himself to being a notch on her post, a lover if one may (can he call himself that? he will in his head anyways!)
like a global model would’ve never taken a relationship with him seriously so he’s should just treasure the moment then boom she shows up! and if we’re really leaning into the romcom of it all it’s during like crazy rain, her car gets stuck, she trucks herself to his doorstep by foot, and he stares slack jawed when he opens the door to se her <3
Tumblr media
omg anon i was using your ask to draft a drabble and then this little incident of mikasa showing up to eren’s house has since spiraled further so we will be compiling all the ideas into one and since i had already been writing on this one we’re still gonna use yours lol!
also very much enjoying the dramatics and hallmark vibes here like is that just the energy i exude? extreme unseriousness and hallmark level corniness lol??
but fuck it drabble let’s go 🦅🦅🦅
(this actually ended up being so long lol 1.6k so enjoy!)
The rain only started falling harder every minute longer Mikasa continued to drive down the gravel road, the pitch black of the country sky only adding to the lack of visibility. She gripped the steering wheel hard, trying to focus on what little bit of the road she could see. The high beams of the rental car were doing little to nothing to help her see, only adding to her anxiety.
Her only saving grace was the fact that the GPS was telling her she was only five minutes away from Eren’s house—the last place she should be on a Wednesday night in the middle of April—not to mention she was halfway across the country, in the middle of nowhere, driving down a country road to see a man who’d she had only seen once.
Had it been her best idea? No. Was she still doing it? Absolutely.
There had been few times in her life when she had run off pure spontaneity, and she would allow herself this one instance of a lack of sensibility. It certainly wasn’t wise to book a flight in the act of impulse after finding out said man would be free all week, a pause in his hectic schedule, a schedule she had acquired by coercing her assistant to do some potentially not-so-legal things.
But the ticket had been bought. The rental car reservation had been made. So there was no turning back. (There certainly was opportunity to turn around, but Mikasa didn’t want to give herself any potential out or else she wouldn’t ever commit to doing so.)
So here she was, 0.75 miles from his house, running off pure adrenaline, rehearsing the speech she and Sasha had prepared.
“Hi, Eren. I know this is sudden, but I probably should’ve asked you for your number before leaving. I had to come back to Texas for another shoot, so I thought I would stop by.”
Maybe it was partially based on a lie, but tomato, tomato. It would be fine, she would be fine, and she told herself that all of this certainly wouldn’t blow up in her face.
Until that was precisely what happened.
She had been driving down the curve that led up to Eren’s ranch house when she felt the car jerk, suddenly drifting off the road, before halting to a stop, the Low-Pressure light immediately flashing on. As soon as she saw the lights flash on, she immediately knew one of the tires had blown out, leaving her stranded in the pouring rain just outside of Eren’s house.
“Fuck,” she muttered under her breath. Mikasa leaned her head against the steering wheel, her stomach beginning to pool with regret.
“Do you think it would be weird if I just showed up at his house?”
Yes, Mikasa. It would be weird—it’s fucking insane of you, she thought to herself. And you certainly wouldn’t be in the fucking predicament you are in now if you just called him like any sane other sane person.
Mikasa glanced at her phone, the GPS alerting her she was only 0.25 miles from his house, and the weather app telling her the rain wouldn’t stop for at least the next four hours.
She sat there weighing her options.
Call a tow truck, and stick out the wait in her car
Walk to Eren’s house
Mikasa could see the lights of his house shining through the rain like a lighthouse in a stormy sea, signaling a potential safe return. At this point, she had already risked so much—her pride, her sanity, and almost her life had the tire incident gone any worse—what more did she have to lose?
She shut off the car, grabbed the keys and her phone—leaving her other belongings so if she needed to do a walk of shame back to her car, at least she’d be traveling light—and shoved on a jacket, thankful to whatever higher power she decided to bring one with her on the plane that day.
Mikasa told herself that if she ran as fast as she could, she would be there quickly, but she didn’t anticipate having to trek through mud, puddles, and essentially pitch black to make it to his front porch. By the time she made it up the steps, her white shoes were ruined, her white tank top was practically see-through, showing every lace detail of her black bra, and her bangs were plastered to her face. (Suddenly, there didn’t seem to be any point in asking how she should do her hair.)
There wasn’t much left to do but ring the doorbell, and at this point, she didn’t have anything left to lose, so she jammed her finger against it, giving herself no opportunity to back out. She heard the chime echo through his house while she stood there fiddling with her thumbs, trying to ring out as much water as she could from her hair, trying to make herself look the least bit presentable.
She heard the low timbre of a man from the other side of the door before the fumbling of the lock and doorknob snapped her attention forward. Mikasa felt her heart get stuck in her stomach as she saw the door pull back, Eren’s tall frame coming into view.
Mikasa had to stop herself from letting her jaw drop when she saw him; the first time she saw him practically paling in comparison to how he looked right now. From the fact that he had no shirt on, allowing her to see just how much muscle he had from all those days he spent working hard, to the sweats that hung low on his hips, leaving little to her imagination. He even looked prettier when he was home, as if the sense of comfort it brought him added an extra glow to his face.
His hand was clenched around his phone, holding it to his ear when he finally spoke, breaking Mikasa out of her ogling.
“Hey mom, I’m gonna have to call you back later… No ma’am… Yes ma’am, I will. I promise… I love you too… Okay, bye. Talk to you tomorrow.” His voice was velvety when he spoke, something about the way he spoke sweet and rich, a sound Mikasa didn’t think she’d ever get tired of.
Eren stared at her blankly once he hung up the phone, dumbfounded that she was standing on his front porch, not to mention that she was muddy and drenched from the rain.
The two of them were stuck in a staring contest, neither of them able to formulate words—all of Mikasa’s confidence had suddenly flown out the window, leaving her at a loss for words, because as soon as she opened her mouth, she knew she would be babbling like an idiot.
“Umm… Hi?” Eren said, his greeting coming out more like a question than anything.
“Hi,” Mikasa somehow managed to squeak out.
“Umm…” He repeated, still at a loss for words.
Mikasa’s mind, a jumbled mess, opted to go for it, knowing her babbling would be better than whatever awkward mess this was.
“You forgot something,” she said blankly.
Eren looked at her confused, his brows furrowing, “What?”
“You didn’t ask for my number the last time we saw each other. You forgot to ask me for it when I left here,” she said, stepping closer to where he stood in the doorway.
“You wanted me to ask you for your number?” Eren stared at her in disbelief, whether it was because he was shocked at her words or that she dared to show up and say them; Mikasa didn’t know.
“You brought me to your ranch, took me on a ride on horseback underneath the stars, called me beautiful, and then still didn’t ask me for my number. You didn’t even try to kiss me.”
“Did you want me to?” Eren said as his eyes flickered to her lips.
“Do you really think I would fly across the country on a whim and walk a quarter mile in the rain if I didn’t want you to ask me for my number or kiss me, Eren?” Mikasa asked.
She stood before him, glancing up at him, her face merely inches away from his. She could see how long his lashes looked beneath the porch light, the strands of gold and bronze within his hair, and the plush pink of his lips—right where she could kiss him.
“Mikasa, you walked a quarter mile in the pouring—”
He didn’t get the chance to finish his sentence before Mikasa pushed herself upward, so her lips met his, her hand steadying itself on his broad chest. He tasted like sweet tea and a touch of Chapstick, his lips as soft as she could have imagined. His hands steadied on her waist, bringing her closer to him. She relished in the way he felt before the reality of the situation began to plague her mind—clarity being her cruelest enemy.
Maybe it was the second-guessing running through her head, but the sudden urge to pull away instantly flooded through her mind before she jerked herself back.
“Hey, don’t do that,” Eren’s voice immediately rang through her ears as she pulled away. “Who said I wanted you to stop?”
“Oh, did you not?”
“You show up on my doorstep with all these questions, then kiss me, and now you’re surprised I wanted to kiss you back?”
“Umm… maybe?”
Eren didn’t give her much time to think before he picked her up and walked her into his house. “How about I let you into my house so you don’t end up sick from being drenched in the rain, get you some dry clothes, and you can ask me all the questions you want?”
“Okay,” she responded shyly, her face flushing red at his directness.
“Never met a girl so pretty and bold before, surely I have to keep you around.”

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
Hange: Love the train so much.... ...... I sit... ..... It goes........ ........ We arrive!!!!!
Connie: I understand that, but it still doesn't explain why we get to carry all the rails in 40 degree* weather while you sit in the shade and drink a monster energy on the rocks
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
Carla: Can I have a private talk with you?
Grisha: Sure, as long as it’s not about tampons, because I just don’t understand them.
Hannes, wearing tampons as earplugs: How? It's so obvious what they're used for!
Carla: I asked for a PRIVATE talk with him!
Grisha: Oh, you just can't separate me and Hannes. We're a package deal!
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
Eren: Don't you think you're being a little dramatic about me letting your cactus die?
Floch: Dramatic? Perhaps a little.
Floch: Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to look out the window with a grimly satisfied expression.
Floch: I paid this skywriter a lot of money to write “Eren likes pineapple on pizza” in the clouds.

Eren: You can diffuse any situation by saying, "are we about to kiss, right now?"
Historia: Eren, not only is that completely false and a ridiculous concept, but it's also not appropriate at all, we are at your trial for global genocide for fuck's sake-
Eren, leaning towards her: Are we about to kiss, right now?
Historia:
Historia, beet red: Nevermind.
Gabi: Can we PLEASE find another judge for this?!
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

Ymir: Before you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves. One for your foe, one for yourself.
Zeke: What a stupid fucking quote. I'm killing way more than two people idiot
Eren: Don't even bury them. Let them rot.
Zeke: Plus it's not like I'm gonna bury myself anyways? Why would I provide free cleaning labor like that
Eren: Maybe you're supposed to die in the grave?
Zeke: I'm not gonna dig myself a grave so someone can push me in and I can die as the biggest idiot that ever walked this Earth
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
Udo, watching Gabi: If you were religious, that would be straight-to-hell behavior...

Armin, about Eren: If karma doesn't hit you real quick, I fucking will.

Connie: Which came first, the orange or the orange?
Historia: Orange was first used to refer to the fruit 1280 years ago but was not used as a color until around 1000 years ago.
Eren: What was the color called before then?
Sasha: There was no color, duh! Everything was black and white!

*Thru the phone*
Erwin: Hey, I need your help, can you come back?
Hange: Uh, I can't, I'm buying clothes.

Erwin: What do you mean there's only soup?
Hange: It means there's only soup!
Erwin: Well then get out of the soup aisle!

Erwin: Why are you buying clothes at the soup store?!
Hange: Fuck you!

Eren: I can barely tolerate the living, why would I want to commute with the dead?
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
Armin: Does necromancy only work on animals? What do you do if you accidentally necromancy a fence and then it starts growing branches?
Armin: WHAT DO YOU DO IF YOU NECROMANCY A BOTTLE OF SHAMPOO AND IT TURNS INTO AN ENTIRE PILE OF LIMES?
Armin: What if I accidentally necromancy a vaccine and then someone gets an armful of very live pathogen?
Armin: WHAT'S THE LIMIT ON DEADNESS? HOW RECENTLY DOES SOMETHING HAVE TO BE DEAD? COULD I NECROMANCY A DINOSAUR FOSSIL? WHAT IF I NECROMANCIED THE GROUND AND THEN DINOSAURS STARTED APPEARING?
Armin: WHAT IF I NECROMANCIED A LIMESTONE WALL AND IT JUST TURNED INTO A PILE OF MOLLUSCS? WHAT IF I MOLLUSCED A BUILDING? A MOUNTAIN?

Floch: If I didn't know any better, I'd say you're impressed.
Yelena: But you do know better.

Annie: What’s it like being tall?
Historia: Is it nice?
Armin: Can you reach comfortably for the cupboards?

Eren: I don't know whether to bail you out, Mikasa, you've been in jail three times.

Hey everyone!! Work has kept me extremely busy lately, plus I had major surgery in the beginning of May so I haven’t had time for much. But….I decided to finally started writing a multi-chapter Rivamika fanfic. I’ve had this idea in my head for a while, and I think I’m finally somewhat happy with Chapter 1. I need to join AO3 so I can share it there, but for now here it is. I might modify it slightly before I share on AO3.
Brief summary….first of all, it’s an AU. the idea is that Levi, a successful and wealthy New York lawyer, and Mikasa, an up and coming fashion photographer also from NY, end up staying *very* close to each other while vacationing in a small town in Maryland.
Also, keep in mind I am a scientist. I enjoy writing and reading, but I am not a skilled creative writer like some fanfic authors are. I try!
Title: A Week in Oxford
Chapter 1: Much Needed Break
Levi - Lower Manhattan, New York
Exhausted but finally feeling at ease, Levi began to pack his documents from the trial into his sleek, black leather briefcase. After a long and extensive jury trial, his client, Dimo Reeves, was found not guilty for the crimes of securities fraud and embezzlement, but was found guilty of the misdemeanor of obstruction of justice. The client was more than pleased with the outcome, since the obstruction of justice charge was fairly minor and resulted in simply year one of supervised probation. The evidence against his client for the other two charges was overwhelming, but Mr. Reeves, a prominent Wall Street trader, hired Levi as his lawyer due to Levi’s impressive track record and tenacity for casting doubt on minute aspects of the crime and evidence. The prosecutors were pushing for 10-15 years of incarceration if he were to be found guilty by the jury. But, Levi had won, yet again. He was able to discover small details in the evidence and slight loopholes in the wording of the law to cast just enough doubt in the juror’s minds, and so they found Mr. Reeve’s not guilty. This is where Levi excelled. Over the last decade, he had proven himself to be a highly sought after attorney throughout New York. He had a mind that could easily find these small inconsistencies in both the evidence and the laws, and his skills in arguing and persuasion were second to no one. For all he lacked in stature, he made up for in his tenacity and cutthroat methods in the courtroom, willing to push the comfort level of the judge but knowing when to stop. To put it simply, in the courtroom Levi Ackerman was an imposing threat to the prosecutors that worked against him. This track record skyrocketed Levi as one of the partners of a now top legal group in New York, Smith and Ackerman. His partner and long time best friend, Erwin, glanced at Levi with a wicked smile on his face.
“What? I know that look. It’s usually never good.”
“Am I not allowed to smile? I am well aware of your amazing career history, but even I am impressed with how you managed this case, Levi. Two years and too many sleepless nights for you, my friend. This decision today was solely based on your impressive mind and work ethic. Choosing you as my partner four years ago is a gamble that has paid off well.”
“Tsk, what gamble? You act as if you haven’t been my closest friend for the last 12 years.”
“Even if you were my enemy, I would have chosen you. No one else can command a courtroom the way you can, Levi,” Erwin replied with a smirk. “Now that this case is finally over, I do believe you owe me a promise.”
Levi rolled his eyes, knowing that Erwin would not be one to easily let this go.
“Erwin, I’m fine. I don’t need to go on a shitty break to a shitty small town. Work keeps my mind occupied and you know how much I hate leaving the city.”
“Levi, you can’t continue to live like this. Trust me, your work ethic is above and beyond anything I could have imagined. But, you haven’t taken a day off of work in four years… and that was only because you had to attend your uncle's funeral. I’m convinced if I don’t force this, you would work everyday until you die a crippled, elderly man in a sterile apartment with nothing but career accomplishments to your name. You need a break. You need to interact with people, make friends and connections other than myself or Hange. It’s healthy to take a break and meet people. And you and I both know how much a change of atmosphere might help with your ongoing sleep problems -“
“What sleep problems? I sleep like a baby.”
Rolling his eyes, Erwin knew better. “ Hange says she has to know by this evening. Apparently someone has expressed an interest in renting the cottage during the same week as you.”
“Fine. I’ll think about it while I drive home and give Hange a call either way.”
Knowing that was as good as he was going to get from his cranky, small friend….Erwin nodded.
“Thank you.. Now, I need to get home and take a shower. This courtroom is stifling and I’m fairly certain it hasn’t been dusted properly in over a week.”
Erwin simply chuckled at his friend's quirks, knowing virtually all there was to know about the man who could intimidate an entire courtroom with just his glare, but who was equally as petrified of dust and dirt.
“Levi, as much as I would love to return home myself, there is a rather large crowd of members of the press waiting to speak to us. But, I know your distaste for them, so I will take the lead. The only thing I ask of you is to please behave and mind your temper.”
With another roll of his eyes, Levi began to walk toward the exit of the courtroom. He knew they meant well, but Erwin and Hange could be, well, imposing. They constantly nagged Levi about his workaholic tendencies and urged him to “get out there and meet people.” They asked about Levi’s sleep habits, knowing he suffered from insomnia, although Levi himself has never disclosed to his two closest friends the exact reasons why. The three of them met while attending Cornell University, although Levi was a freshman during the time Erwin and Hange were already juniors despite being the same age. Regardless, sharing an off-campus apartment together brought them close, and the three of them have remained friends since. While Erwin and Levi both attended law school and passed the New York State Bar exam, Hange received her phD in microbiology and works at New York-Presbyterian Hospital as a microbiologist.
Levi felt somewhat refreshed by the cool October air that encompassed him as he stepped outside of the courtroom, with Erwin and Mr. Reeves’s not far behind him. However, it didn’t take long for the hordes of journalists and cameras to force their way into his personal space, immediately agitating Levi and putting him on edge. He didn’t even do well with people he liked invading his space, let alone complete strangers. .
“Mr. Ackerman, how does it feel to be one of the top bachelor’s in New York City?”
“Mr. Ackerman, can you give us a statement on the jury’s decision today? What are your feelings right now?”
While Levi hated the press and attention, he knew this was part of his job. However, Erwin was much more cordial and well spoken, which made him better equipped to handle the PR aspects of their position, so Levi usually left this part to him. Levi’s temper flared though, when one particularly sleezy duo of journalist and cameraman would not relent, and asked Levi a question that went too far.
“Mr. Ackerman, do you feel guilty for willingly representing someone who scammed his clients out of millions? Especially given your own personal history of criminal acts?”
As soon as Erwin heard the question, he tensed. Before he could even react further, Levi had grabbed the camera from the man and slammed it toward the ground, smashing it into pieces. The crowd silenced, and Levi immediately felt every eye on him.
Without missing a beat, and with a broad smile reaching across his photogenic face, Erwin began, “Well then, with that I am glad to take any questions you have for my partner and I regarding the court’s decision in our case today.”
As Levi started to walk away, head down, he thought to himself perhaps he did need a break.
Mikasa - Murray Hill, New York
Mikasa was browsing through the results of her photo shoot today in Murray Hill. Graduating from Columbia University four years ago with a degree in photography, she quickly made a name for herself as a sought after fashion photographer in the city. Not only is it impressive that she was accepted into Columbia, with only a 4% acceptance rate, she was also offered a full scholarship. Of course, being named as the Valedictorian of her graduating high school class helped quite a bit. Mikasa had always been naturally smart, but when paired with her outstanding work ethic and participation in a variety of extracurriculars, she was a perfect candidate for selection for the highly prestigious scholarship Columbia offered her.
After chatting with her client for a bit letting them know when they would be receiving an email of edited proofs, Mikasa packed up her laptop and made the short walk from the studio to the parking garage. Unlike most New Yorkers, Mikasa insisted on bringing her car when she moved into her one-bedroom apartment in the neighborhood of Hell's Kitchen, New York. There was just too much to explore; too much to see. She usually spent weekends taking long drives outside of the city in search of any and everything she could photograph. Sure, she paid a pretty penny for the parking spot in her neighborhood, but she wouldn’t have it any other way. Besides, her monthly rent of $2,500 was actually quite a steal for the modern, light-filled apartment that she always kept clean and organized. It had all of the necessities….a nice sized bedroom with surprisingly large closet space, a small but full kitchen, even a washer and dryer combo. The money she was making as a fashion photographer certainly didn’t make her rich, but she was more comfortable than she anticipated being at only 25. Plus, she was happy…at least as far as her career was concerned.
It was the middle of October, and the cool breeze and vibrant shades of leaves on the small trees dotting the sidewalks indicated fall had finally arrived. Mikasa loved this time of year, and it reminded her of growing up with the Yeager family in a suburb about an hour outside of the city. Although she suffered from an unimaginable loss as a young child, her years with the Yeager family were filled with love and support. Her second set of parents enrolled her in photography classes, supported her when she felt overwhelmed from her studies and duties as class president, and never missed a single one of her high school soccer games.
Her adoptive brother, Eren, was like a real brother to her in many ways, and she always found herself watching out for him due to his reckless ways. They were the same age, same year in school, and even went to college close to each other. Eren majored in software development and was now working in Philadelphia as a video game designer. He was never as studious as Mikasa was in high school, but he seemed to blossom in his college classes and seemed very happy with his career choice. Their close childhood friend Armin, who graduated as salutatorian right behind Mikasa, also attended Columbia and received his MBA. He also worked in Philadelphia and he and Eren were currently sharing a two bedroom apartment together as roommates.
The relationship between Mikasa and Eren wasn’t always healthy though, and she fears that her co-dependency on him has made it difficult for her to form bonds and friendships with others. One of the reasons Eren repeatedly pushed her away is her tendency to mother those she holds close. Even Armin had mentioned it from time to time. She was well aware of this, but why should she change who she is to please others? So what if she cared too much for people she felt close to? It was a part of who she was, and she didn’t see any need to change that fact.
Aside from Eren, Armin, and her college best friend Sasha, Mikasa didn’t really have anyone else she would consider as more than an acquaintance. Sasha often urged her to meet people and do things other than solitary drives to take photographs. At first, Mikasa dismissed those thoughts. Lately though, she has found herself feeling somewhat lonely, and aching for a connection and companionship. Part of her decision to work in New York and not follow Eren and Armin to Philadelphia was so she could give herself physical distance from the unhealthy relationship that developed between her and Eren over the years. Mikasa knew it was better for her to move on, to find someone who would dedicate their entire self to her and not just lure her in when it was convenient for them. Mikasa truly did want a companion and love, but with such a busy schedule and a small handful of friends, she had no idea how to go about meeting anyone. Plus, she craved for someone who accepted her, flaws and all.
About halfway through her drive home, her phone rang. She pressed the button on her vehicle’s control center to answer via Bluetooth.
“Hey Mikasa! Just wanted to call to check in, see how things went with your big photoshoot this week.”
“Oh hey Sasha! It went really well, the photos turned out amazing… I think the clients are going to be very happy with the finished product.”
“Mika that’s so great! I’m so proud of you! Wanna head out tonight to celebrate? There’s this new restaurant I’ve been dying to try, plus I hear the drinks are amazing too!”
“Actually, I decided I need to get away for a bit. I know it’s last minute, but I think I’m gonna book that AirBnB I was checking out in Maryland the other day.”’
“Seriously Mika? Wow that’s so awesome….damn I wish I could take off a few days and go with! You have to let me know how all of the yummy seafood is down there!!!”
Rolling her eyes, yet smiling, because Mikasa knew how food obsessed her best friend was, she replied, “You know I will Sasha…I always take pics for you too.”
“Yay! Mikasa I’m so happy for you. And who knows? Maybe you’ll meet someone while you’re there,” Sasha said with a wink.
“Sasha….the town has a population of 600 people. I highly doubt there would be someone there I could meet.”
“You never know Mikasa! Okay be safe, love ya!”
With a smile, Mikasa replied “You know it. Love you too.”
The cottage was located in a town called Oxford, which had a population of only 600 people. Being a photographer, she was immediately impressed by the contrast of the red park bench which sat just in front of the grey cottage with its dark green shutters. Near the winding brick sidewalk, tulips bloomed in reds, yellows, and whites. She longed to take more photographs of it, and could only imagine how beautiful the entire town must be as well. The cottage had an open floor plan with only one bed and one couch, but this was more than adequate for her needs. Last week, Mikasa had sent a brief email to the host, someone by the name of Hange, and Mikasa was pleased to see that the cottage was available during the week she had in mind. However, due to work demands, Mikasa never had a chance to follow up on the email.
Upon entering her apartment, she decided to open her laptop and view the cottage again, as well as do some research on the surrounding area. She was excited to see that the small town of Oxford and surrounding area provided numerous opportunities for her photography hobby. Sitting along the shores of the Chesapeake Bay, the area offered opportunities for her to photograph not only the nature of the area, but also take photos of the hard working local people, known as waterman, who made their living fishing and crabbing on the Chesapeake Bay. There were gorgeous Civil-War era estates to explore, state parks to hike, rivers to kayak, and top-rated seafood restaurants to indulge in. Nearby towns like Easton and St. Michael’s offered boutiques, coffee shops, and local artisan crafts.
Upon checking the website calendar, Mikasa saw that the week she wanted, which started the next day, was still available. Without thinking it over too much, Mikasa clicked on the tab to book her one week stay at the small cottage. Within minutes of making her payment, she received an automatic email from the host. She quickly opened her email app and read that the key would be left under the doormat, and it also provided the exact address. Under the doormat? Didn’t these rentals usually have lockboxes with access codes? Then again, she was going to a very rural place. Maybe things there were just done differently than they were in the city? She pulled her suitcase from her closet and began to pack, excited for her last minute decision to make something happen in her life. The next morning, she would make the drive from New York to the town of Oxford, Maryland.
While Mikasa was excited for the chance to relax and explore a new area, she knew better than to get her hopes up about meeting new people. The town she was traveling to had such a small population, and even the surrounding area was mostly rural. However, the possibility still existed, right? Surely there was someone for her out there, somewhere. Someone who accepted her for who she was….someone who wanted all of her. Maybe she would meet someone special on this trip?
Levi - That evening, Tribeca
Levi pulled his sleek, black Audi into the parking garage under his apartment building. He knew he had royally messed up today, and he knew a lecture from Erwin was forthcoming. But, for now; all he desired was some calming music, a soothing cup of tea, and the view and ambience of his 20th floor apartment. He entered the elevator, hit the floor for 20, and exhaled loudly as he leaned back against the elevator wall. The elevator door opened, and he made the short walk to his door. He immediately felt a sense of calm wash over him when he entered his home. The sleek, grey and black modern furniture he selected contrasted beautifully with the exposed brick walls left after renovations. His kitchen had top of the line, chef grade appliances he loved using while creating new culinary dishes. He had a vast collection of various, rare tea leaves stored in metal tins in a cabinet which took up nearly an entire wall. Windows reaching from floor to ceiling provided a gorgeous view of the city skyline from the 20th floor. Levi wasn’t always fortunate enough to live this way, and while he did appreciate the finer things that his new life could afford, he never forgot his roots and where he came from. Perhaps that’s why he holds himself to such high standards in every aspect of his life now. He knows what it feels like to have nothing, and the fear of people seeing beyond the mask he has created for himself was always lurking. Even that sleezy journalist from earlier today took a low jab at Levi’s past, reminding him that he could never truly escape from who he once was.
While the material things were nice, Levi knew they didn’t make him truly happy. Sure, he had a successful career. He had two close friends. He was well known throughout the city as a tenacious lawyer. He had a gorgeous apartment, a shiny new car, and money to spare. But he wasn’t happy. Not the kind of happy he longed for….a romantic companion. Maybe even love. But, he knew he had a pretty shitty personality, and it was nearly impossible for him to open up to new people. He had no clue how he could find something as elusive as love when he could barely tolerate most people. Still, deep down, Levi craved the feeling of someone who he could call his. Someone who supported him, wasn’t after his money, and who loved him for him. Erwin and Hange were good to Levi, he knew that. He appreciated their friendship. But Levi had never truly experienced love before, in any capacity. Not any he could remember at least. Maybe that’s why he craved for it so badly? Levi didn’t even know where to start though. Hell, he had never even been in a real relationship. His experiences with women were limited to one-night stands and flings, and even those ended years ago as his career began to take up more and more of his time. He knew he had impossibly high standards, and he always seemed to find something wrong with women who were interested in him. Erwin and Hange encouraged him to try to have a more open mind, but when it came to something as important as a relationship, Levi didn’t want to settle. But, Levi was nearly 37 years old. It was high time he took steps to make this happen. Someone was out there, someone made just for him. Someone who wasn’t perfect, but who was perfect for him. Someone like that had to exist? Right?
For now, Levi thought he would start with baby steps. Getting away for a week seemed like a good place to start. His friend, Hange, inherited a cottage in a small town on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. She had been begging him incessantly to take her up on the offer to stay there for a week, knowing how badly her friend needed time to relax and decompress from his career. He didn’t even know much about the area, only that it was about a 5 hour drive away and was quite rural. As he pondered, Levi thought this was a healthy first step toward exiting his comfort zone, which was basically staying exclusively in the city, and addicting himself with work. Without thinking about it too much, Levi grabbed his cell and hit the contact button for Hange. She answered nearly immediately.
“Levi! To what do I owe the pleasure? Also, I saw that slight mishap on the news earlier….don’t worry, I think he totally deserved it!”
Grumbling, Levi decided that maybe calling Hange was a bad idea after all. The last thing he needed right now was to be reminded of his poor decision making skills earlier in the day. Hange never was one who fully understood boundaries, though. He decided to look past it for now.
“While I appreciate the sentiment, I’m actually calling to see if your offer to stay in the cottage is still good for the week..”
“What? Is this my friend Levi? Levi Ackerman? Willingly asking about taking a week off of work? Are you being held at gunpoint? Is there someone coercing you right now?”
“I’m serious, four-eyes. After today, I decided maybe I really do need this break. I know it’s last minute, but can I stay there or what?”
Without even checking her app, Hange excitedly exclaimed “Of course you can! Well, I did have someone ask about it last week for the same time slot, but I never heard back from her so it’s definitely available. And you know you don’t need to book through the website….this is on me!”
“Hange, I’m only taking you up on this if you accept payment. We’ve been over this before. And for the love of God, I’m only staying there if someone other than you has been cleaning it. Oh…and make sure you mark it as booked on the Airbnb site….last thing I need is some random showing up because you forgot to update the calendar.”
“Of course I’ll update it, I. I’m not an idiot. Yes, my friend Nanaba lives in the area and she cleans and maintains it for me. Well, the key for the cottage is under the doormat. I’ll send you the address. Bye!”
Under the doormat? Didn’t most people have lockboxes with access codes for these rentals? Levi thought his strange friend was a little too trusting at times, but he dismissed it. All he knew is he would be leaving the next morning, to make the drive from New York to the small town of Oxford, Maryland. Levi pulled his suitcases from his closet and started the process of meticulously packing his things.
Little did Levi know that his friend Hange went to sleep peacefully that night, never once updating the Airbnb calendar, never checking her email or app, and not noticing whatsoever how royally she herself had fucked up.

Aot Headcanons
In honor of 4/20 here's a list of headcanons about aot characters smoking weed~
Eren:
He smokes socially and it always makes him find everything anyone says hilarious
After two hits Eren is above the clouds and giggling under his breath because someone said something that rhymes with fart
Jean:
Likes smoking in a group but gets really paranoid if he smokes alone or with only one other person, if he smokes too much he gets hyper aware of his body functioning and has a hard time breathing
He usually only takes one hit when smoking with his friends and gets really annoyed when they make fun of him, but the one hit is enough to make him feel a little lighter and relax
Reiner:
He doesn't like smoking because it gives him panic attacks but he always pitches in to buy stuff for the group because he likes hanging out and being the sober one
He normally ends up being the one to drive everyone to go get fast food or snacks
Annie:
She prefers smoking over drinking because when she's drunk she gets really aggressive. She likes that weed makes her calm down a bit
Annie gets almost too relaxed even. She'll keep taking hits until she's in another dimension, it always freaks Armin out
Sasha:
She smokes with everyone but she doesn't really get the point of it, probably because she's eating the whole time and never gets very high. Just one hit gives her major munchies
Sasha will keep smoking until there's nothing left, but only ever gets a little high because of her tolerance/constant eating
Connie:
This boy radiates so much stoner energy, he for sure always had the plug before weed was legalized and got his medical card before it was legalized to the general public
Connie smokes every morning to start his day and then uses a pen throughout the day for a constant high. He's always offering hits of his pen to whoever he's with no matter the location or situation
Armin:
He used to be really scared to smoke and when he found out his friends had started the boy went on long rants about it being a gateway drug. Eventually with enough peer pressure, and a bunch of online research to make sure he'd be okay, Armin started taking little hits when the joint passed him by
Weed had a much different effect on him than he expected it to though, it always makes him flirty. The only time he smokes outside of the group is before sex every now and then.
Mikasa:
She hates it, it makes her cough a lot and she can't stand the smell of it. She tries not to complain when her friends are smoking, but she usually finds a way to be out of the room or space they're smoking in because she hates when the smell sticks to her clothes
Eren and Connie have had her try it in every possible way and she only liked the edibles, but she gets nervous about eating too many after the one time Sasha accidentally ate an entire batch of pot brownies.
Floch:
Before he actually started smoking he used to brag about how he already had, it was obvious he'd been lying when his first hit made him cough up a lung and wheeze for almost ten minutes. He doesn't really like smoking but he doesn't like to be left out so he always joins in
His lips get very loose when he's high and he often just says everything he thinks out loud in basically word vomit. He's accidentally said some rude things that have gotten him in trouble with the group a few times.

on a non aot related note what would a gjhm omegaverse au look like?
gjhm: so we all know gojo is canonically a hoe, what if this is another reason why he and utahime are stuck in this weird situationship where she knows he’ll never commit and she’s his most favorite partner. going off of that they’re not always careful and she finds out something before he’s unboxed and she’ll tell him once everything is over and then he dies.
on another note: gjhm/sgshk friends au.
the sgshk idea where they’re fwbs during that year before he leaves and then going one last time in her dorm when no one else is around and he accidentally confesses feelings and she snaps back to reality because oh shit.

"Except--In this world, my friends tried to be strong..They saved me, the weak. I couldn't bear that...To the two of them, I was someone to be protected."
Armin's been my kindred spirit ever since I first watched Attack on Titan ... While I do relate with some of the other characters -- like Mikasa in the OVA creating her own imaginary world to reject the cruel reality around her at having lost Eren (until he came back), having gone hungry as a child like Sasha so now I eat too much, and Historia for struggling with my identity, mother issues, father issues, fawning for validation, and rejecting my own name for the longest time -- it is overall Armin who resonates with me the most with Robbie @dmrs121923 being my Eren Yeager and Micky @octobernocturne being my Ackerman, whether Levi or Mikasa in this scenario. Armin in English also shares a voice actor with Yuri Katsuki from Yuri on Ice, another character with GAD like me (Generalized Anxiety Disorder -- I have social phobia on top of that), who is the voice actor I often mimick the voice of, and makes me want to be a voice actor when I feel that old fancy arise ... I don't know what to make of my life. I'm young but growing older, sick but not yet legally disabled, and even though I make progress, I feel held back by the past haunting me, the trauma that made me mentally ill in the first place, still I strive for independence, but some days I can barely get out of bed, not just from mental exhaustion, but the chronic physical fatigue as well ❤️‍🩹 ... I barely have spoons these days ... That's a health metaphor, like a health bar, or Link's Hearts in The Legend of Zelda ... And I need to rely on my brothers, especially Micky, to survive and get by in this cruel world ... With Robbie finding his safe person, his Mikasa, I am grateful to God that I now have a loving sis-in-law in the sweet Lizzy Rose 🌹 @esaucie too ... I will protect and love my little tribe and never, ever take them for granted. But I still cry cos of my own inferiority complex, and always want to be helpful and as useful as possible to my Beloved Ones in any way I'm able. I love you guys!! 🥺❤️‍🩹 We're Armin, Eren, Mikasa, and Levi forever!!

SHORTER VERSION! Here’s why I believe Mikasa is adopted, and EM are somewhat family members
I hear EM can’t be siblings because of the ending and there’s no evidence to suggest they are. So, I'll give my reasons why I believe it’s not wrong to see them that way.
1.) “Mikasa didn’t take the Yaeger’s surname, so she’s not adopted.” While that’s a good point, that doesn’t mean she’s not adopted. Mikasa can still be adopted by the Yaegers without taking their last name. In fact, adopted, foster, and stepchildren aren’t required to take their new guardian’s last name. It’s common for step, adopted, or foster kids to keep their last name. Even so, some would say Mikasa didn’t take their last name, so she’s not adopted. There are adopted fictional people that don’t take their family’s last name. If I recall, Dick Grayson (Robin from Batman) was adopted by Bruce Wayne, yet Bruce never made Robin change his name. JoJo Bizarre Universe: Dio Brando, adopted by the Joestars, kept his last original name.
2.) “She doesn’t call Grisha and Carla her parents or ‘mom’ and ‘dad’.” Mikasa does call and refer to the Yaegers as her parents. “I lost my parents’ in Lost Girls; she’s talking about BOTH her parents and the Yaegers. Not only that, Mikasa looks at Carla as her mother, she literally calls Carla ‘her second mother’ in Short Stories: Mikasa’s Recipe. Let’s say she doesn’t, there are adopted kids that call their parents by their first or last name, probably because they’re either not comfortable with addressing them as ‘mom/dad’ yet or because they grew used to addressing them as something else. Doesn’t make them any less adopted. From what I recall, Mikasa knows Grisha before living with the Yaegers, so she’s already used to calling him by a different name. We also must remember that Mikasa’s parents were recently killed, so calling Grisha “dad” would probably be a big step for her at the moment. However, though she didn’t call Grisha ‘father’ and Carla ‘mother’, she still refers to them as her “家族” which means ‘family’. Lastly, Mikasa refers to Eren as her family too. In fact, they both call each other “家族” which means family in Japanese, most importantly intermediate family which is parents, children, and siblings. So, it still counts.
3.) “She isn’t legally adopted.” That’s another good point, but still can be adopted. Grisha has taken custody of Mikasa and claims her as his child. Grisha notified the MPs on the kidnappers that killed Mikasa’s parents, kidnapped her, and attempted to sell her. So, the MPs knew that she was an orphan and informed Zackely of the incident. Why didn’t Grisha just let the MPs take Mikasa and put her in an orphanage and give her to another family? Here’s two possibilities, either the MPs told Grisha to take custody of the girl, or Grisha decides to take Mikasa in as his daughter since he knows her and her parents well. So, wouldn’t this mean the government knows she’s part of the Yaeger family? Wouldn’t this be legal adopting? The MPs did state that Mikasa was taken in by the Yaegers. To me, that seems they not only are aware of her living with them, you can say they also accepted this, otherwise as I’ve stated they would’ve taken her somewhere else when she was a child. Even if Grisha didn’t go through a legal process, it doesn’t change that she’s a part of the family or that she’s not their kid. AOT universe is vague on adoption & foster care system. We aren’t informed how their adoption system operates. All we know is picking up a child and raising the child is consider adopting in their world. I mean, I don’t think Kenny signed papers or informed the MPs that he’s taking Levi into his custody, yet it’s clear Kenny took a little ownership of Levi. Overall, we can only predict and connect the dots as we read through the story and observe their environment.
4.) “She’s only been there for a year or two.” Grisha and Carla still took her as their own. Their intentions were not only to shelter and feed Mikasa but to also raise her along with Eren. Mikasa could be with them for a year or a decade; it doesn’t change that Carla and Grisha still adopted her. Let’s say the walls weren’t breached; she would still be living under them as their daughter. Lastly, despite living with them for a brief time, Mikasa herself states she sees them as her second family, with Eren being the closest. So again, regardless of how long she was living under their roof, shortened time didn’t stop her from seeing them as her family, and the same goes for the Yaegers.
5.) “It’s a mistranslation. 養子 means ‘adopted child’ while 引き取られる means ‘taken in.’ They are not the same thing.” They’re right, it’s two different words. 養子 does mean “adopted child,” and that isn’t in the guidebook. However、 “引き取られる” is still equivalent to adoption. 引 = Pull, 取 = take, れる = to be, られる is a passive verb that is done to someone or something. In other words, past tense.  取られる = taken.
First definition: To take over; to take back; to collect; to claim
The second definition: to take (a person or animal) charge of, to take custody of; to look after, to take care of; to ADOPT
Tumblr media
I asked my friend and other native speakers for a better understanding, and this is what they said:
''引き取られる'' is an 'action' being taken to take care of, in this case, to be a member of the family/ being adopted into a family. It is common to say ''引き取る'' (means ‘taken’) in Japanese, and it should include the meaning that the parents have the custody to protect and take care of the child. The parents have custody, rights and responsibility of the child. “イェーガー家(け)に引(ひ)き取(と)られた少女(しょうじょ)” or “イェーガー家に引き取られた少女” can also mean “the girl who was adopted by the Yeagers.” ‘Taken in’ isn’t wrong, but neither is ‘adopt.’
Lastly, “adopted daughter” is in the guidebook. Mikasa is called “養女,” which means “adopted daughter.”
“She’s not adopted. She’s fostered. Another family takes in the child because of a circumstance.” This would make sense, too. “養” can also mean foster (which is also in the guidebook); however, I think she’s adopted, not fostered. Mikasa isn’t living with the Yaegers temporarily, and the government isn’t assisting Mikasa. It’s implied in Short Stories: Carla’s dream that Mikasa lived with the Yaegers permanently until she became an adult and moved out. Foster is temporary care and doesn’t have parental rights or custody over the child. It’s an alternative but temporary solution from the government until they allow the kid to return home or find a suitable home for the child. Adoption is permanent and does have all rights and custody to the child. The government no longer assists them. The money the parents use is their own. The Yaegers had custody over Mikasa financially, educationally, and medically (a foster parent wouldn’t have that right). To the last point, these issues aren’t exclusive to foster only. An adopted child can lose their parents and be adopted by another family. I know a few kids who are in Mikasa’s shoes. They're still considered adopted, keep their last names, and refer to their parents by first or last name (they sometimes call them father/mother). As mentioned, the Yaegers claimed the girl as their own child. So, I think ‘adopted daughter” is more fitting.
“But that’s not what the original text said, so it doesn’t count.” Just because the translation isn’t the exact wording, doesn’t mean the elucidation isn’t the same. Words and phrases don’t have to have a single meaning and two different words or phrases can mean the same thing. “Taken in” is a synonym for adopt. In the English thesaurus, ‘taken in’ or ‘take in’ is one of the synonyms for ‘adopt’.  To add, Japan usually say ''引き取る'' instead of ‘養’. This is what I learned from with most native Japanese when I took classes and spoke with them.
So, the guidebook isn’t mistranslating the original text. It’s rewording the text to make it easier to understand. When it comes to translation, the original text will sound ‘unnatural’ to the reader. That’s translators reworded the text readers can understand better. It’s not always a mistranslation.
6.) “The guidebook is outdated. It’s not a source, so you can’t use it. Isayama didn’t write the guidebook.” Just because the guidebooks are for certain seasons, doesn’t mean that it’s not usable. Sure, the guidebook can update what’s going on, but it doesn’t mean the old one is useless. The newer guidebook doesn’t replace or erase the old. (same with interviews). I know the first guidebook had some errors in there, but it doesn’t mean the entire thing is unreliable. In addition, AOT made another guidebook within 2017/2018, that includes season 3, and it still says the SAME THING that Mikasa was adopted by the Yaegers. Surely, they could’ve changed it, but they didn’t because it’s not misleading. Isayama was asked about the INSIDE guidebook, and he doesn't disassociate himself from it. He knows it exists, and he takes part in it. Let's say he didn't, Isayama didn’t write the zombie comic, didn’t draw AOT x Marvel cover, write Spoof on Titan books, Attack on Titan: Junior High mini-series, Attack on Titan: Short Stories, EM RomCom, and more, yet people not only use these references (except AOT x Marvel), but they too accept them as canon. So even if Yams didn’t write the guidebook, it doesn’t mean he didn’t approve of them either. As mentioned, he knows they exist. He doesn’t seem bothered by the guidebooks, so why should we?
7.) “Eren isn’t listed as ‘brother’ or ‘son’ in the guidebook because they forgot to add it. It doesn’t say ‘adopted sister’ near Mikasa’s name.”
Tumblr media
So, let’s start off with the first point. No, it’s not an error. Notice how Connie Springer also doesn’t have ‘son’ or ‘brother’ under his name in his genealogy? Same with Sasha Blouse, she doesn’t have ‘daughter’ underneath her name. Mikasa doesn’t have ‘daughter’ under her name in her genealogy either. Does that mean Connie isn’t part of the family, Sasha doesn’t have a father, and Mikasa has no family, either? Obviously, no.
Tumblr media
The reason Eren doesn’t have ‘son’ or ‘brother’ under his name is because the tree displays Eren’s relationship with them. Purpose: What is Carla, Grisha, and Mikasa in Eren's genealogy? NOT what’s Eren’s ROLE in the family. Same with Connie, Sasha, and Mikasa. It’s what are the others to this character, not what is the character’s role in the family. What is Carla to Eren? His mother. What is Grisha to Eren? His father. What is Mikasa to Eren? His adopted sister. What would Eren be to himself? His own son? No, and he can’t be his own brother, either. Same with Connie, Sasha, and Mikasa. The woman to Connie is his mother, and the other people in his family tree are his siblings. The man in Sasha’s family tree is her father. Now, with Mikasa, what are Kimi and her husband to Mikasa? Her biological parents. What are the Yaegers to Mikasa? Her new adopted family.
Second point, ‘adoptive daughter’ is in the guidebook. I wanted to check myself, so I purchased the Japanese guidebook, and ‘adoptive daughter’ or “養女” is in there. But let’s say it wasn’t, you do realize that would mean Mikasa would be Eren’s biological sister, right? That’s why the editors clarified her position otherwise the guidebook would be saying Mikasa is Eren’s full-blood sister.
Tumblr media
8.) “Eren said, ‘I’m not your little brother!’ Eren doesn’t consider Mikasa as his sister. No character addresses them as siblings.” Yes, Eren did say that; however, he said a lot more than that. Eren also said, “I’m not your kid!” along with “I’m not some snot nose little toddler!” He tells Mikasa in season three, "I'm not some old man!" Despite saying that he still considers Mikasa as his family. It’s questionable that these extensions are cut out because they’re important to what he’s conveying. The point of those references isn’t Eren saying he doesn’t consider Mikasa as part of his family. Of course, he sees Mikasa as his family. He doesn't like Mikasa infantizing him. That’s the entire purpose of him saying those lines. Mikasa always intervenes in Eren’s problems because she sees him as weaker. She treats Eren like she’s his parent, an overprotective sibling, and becomes too controlling. Eren expresses that he doesn’t like being treated like a kid, a snot-nosed toddler, or an elderly, and like he can’t defend or take care of himself. He doesn’t like being pampered and treated as a little brother who’s helpless, especially with Mikasa being a month older than him. That’s why “little,” “kid,” 'old man,' and “toddler” are used to emphasize Eren’s dislike for being treated like a subordinate because that’s how Eren feels. Each title is associated with 'weakness' and 'need of assistance'.
I understand Eren’s frustration because I went through this same experience. My younger siblings say the same thing to me, and I say it to my older siblings, too. We hate them getting involved with our problems because we want to feel grown and independent enough to take care of our issues. Heck, some kids ‘disown’ their parents to feel independent as well. So, by showing independence, we disown any title that refers to us as “little” or ‘younger.’ Of course, not all siblings act this way.
Grisha says plainly and clearly, “My wife, my son, and my daughter.” He also says, "My family,” which includes Mikasa. Grisha calls Mikasa his daughter twice.
Kimi, Mikasa’s mother, even says EM looks like siblings. Why? Because they act exactly just that: siblings.
In Spoof on Titan, Grisha, Carla, and Eren accepted Mikasa into their family and made her a part of it. The chapter is called “Warmth of Family.” Carla says, “You’re part of the family now.” and “We’re family now.” to Mikasa.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
In the same book, Chapter 17: “The Matrimony Misunderstanding” Eren introduces Mikasa to Armin, stating “It’s complicated but Mikasa and I are a family now.” Armin mistakes this as the two being a wedded couple when Eren is talking about Mikasa being a family member / his adoptive sister.
Tumblr media
In addition, in the first chapter of AOT, when Eren and Mikasa save Armin from bullies, Eren confronts Mikasa with, “That reminds me, thanks for ratting me out to mom and dad.” or, “Which reminds me, what possesses you to tell our parents?”
Lastly, there was a scene in season three where Eren just found out he ate his father. Mikasa tries to distract Eren by having him finish his meal. Eren recalls Mikasa and Grisha’s relationship briefly. This symbolizes how Mikasa is close to Grisha and how Grisha's death affects her, too. Why would it affect her? Mikasa considered the Yaegers her second parents and Eren knows that.
“In-laws can see each other as family, too.” That is true. Even so, Eren and Mikasa weren’t a couple at the time, let alone married. Grisha and Carla never considered the two being wedded. Why would they see Eren and Mikasa as in-laws when they were just children at the time?
9.) “Eren asks Mikasa ‘What am I to you?’ He wants a romantic confession from Mikasa.” Eren asks Mikasa this question to see if the future can change. He wants the memories he received to be proven wrong because if Mikasa’s answer doesn’t align with the one he received, that’s a good sign the future isn’t set in stone. The rumbling can be avoided, which is what Eren hoped for. He’s not thinking about romance or her feelings. Not here, at least, because that would be too inappropriate.
And to answer Mikasa saying, “You’re family.” yes, I’m aware Mikasa isn’t being completely honest. However, that doesn’t mean she’s not correct. She most certainly didn’t say, “Not family”. Mikasa could have answered with “a friend.” or “you’re precious to me”. It would’ve made more sense and Mikasa is still stating she doesn’t view Eren as family. So, Mikasa's lying doesn’t make her statement false. If anything, it further highlights that she is falling for him despite them being siblings/family.
10.) “Isayama states that they’re not biological siblings.  And Yams refer to them as ‘childhood friends’. Eren’s Japanese VA sees EM as a couple.”  I’ve seen countless shippers use that GIF and still do. 1.)  That GIF is not real. Isayama never stated Mikasa isn’t Eren’s biological sibling. Someone made that GIF. 2.) Let's say he did; that’s not what’s being discussed. Of course, Mikasa isn’t Eren’s biological sibling. Everyone accepts and knows that. The discourse is about “Is she Eren’s adopted sibling?”  Seeing all this evidence, I believe so. She’s his adopted or foster sibling (I choose adopted). Also, if I recall, Isayama also said Eren sees Mikasa as a mother figure.
“For Eren, rather than a lover, Mikasa’s presence is more like a mother to him. The love towards a mother is considered valuable [precious], however at the same time, there are annoying parts as well [laugh], just like towards one’s actual mother, Eren will start to grow up when he becomes independent [moves away/not dependent on] from Mikasa, I might draw this scene one day”
Even though it’s in a figurative manner, it’s still stating that Eren sees Mikasa in a familiar way. In addition, Yams didn’t say Eren will change his view on Mikasa. He says that he’ll grow apart as in a child being on their own, which means Eren won’t be around Mikasa in the future chapters, he’ll be on his own. This doesn’t mean he won’t view Mikasa as motherly or a family member anymore, but that he’s becoming independent.
Isayama stated that he isn’t a fan of “childhood friends to lovers” trope because he treats childhood friends as siblings. I use this because I also see stans saying Yams never planned them as siblings which isn’t true.
Isayama also states EMA have a bond of family or siblings. 2nd guidebook 2017/2018 version
As for the voice actors, allow me to introduce the English VAs. Titania, Mikasa’s English VA, said she and Bryce, Eren’s English VA, didn’t ship EM because they saw the two as siblings, along with shipping another ship. Do they count as well? Overall, VAs are allowed to have their opinions on the characters and their relationships. So, I don’t think it matters if VAs ship these two or not. (I’ll link the video below.)
Last but not least
11.) “No one has ever mentioned Mikasa and Eren as siblings! Carla sees Mikasa and Eren as a couple in AOT: short stories.” First, I know some people say short stories aren’t canon and are just fanon things. Isayama didn’t take part in these series, so they disregarded the mini-books. Now, I would agree. This isn’t entirely canon. The only reason I bring Short stories up is I see some people use this chapter to say it’s canon. They use SS book 1: Carla’s dream to prove EM is a couple. When the professional translators translated the story, it called Grisha a ‘father of two’, and Carla called both Eren and Mikasa her children. However, these people claim the translation is wrong because 'it’s 'not word for word.' They even went as far as to insult the translators and act like they were better than them at their job. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying the translators are perfect or haven’t made any errors. “Father of two” isn’t in there, but “meek/gentle father” is the correct one.
However, these stans aren’t correct either, at least for the Carla part.
Let’s get this out of the way. Carla DID NOT see Eren and Mikasa as a couple. She saw Eren and Mikasa as children SHE RAISED, which says in both Japanese and English versions. She saw them as her children she took care of.
Book Two: Chapter 16: Eren’s story. Eren shares a story with Levi’s squad to gain their trust. He talks about his past life. His father was a doctor, and their family didn’t face financial issues. Even when adopting Mikasa, they were fine. One of the soldiers asked Eren about Mikasa, recalling her giving Levi a dark look because he kicked Eren in the face. Eren confirms that Mikasa IS his family, and she lost both of her families (biological parents and their parents), which explains why Mikasa is very protective over Eren (cause she’s his last). Then he says, 'She lost his happy family.' Then he talks about him, Mikasa, and Armin (who he calls childhood friend instead of Mikasa).
Book Three: Chapter 23: Mikasa’s recipe: Mikasa not only looks at Carla as her second mother but she’s literally called ‘her second mother.’
Book Four: The last chapter is First Wings, which tells Eren’s story. Summary: Eren, Armin, and Mikasa find an injured bird and take it to Grisha to examine. Grisha helps the bird, and Eren gets to release it.
1.) Grisha literally says “ミカサ, は母さんに頼んで、瓶に湯を入れたものを布に包ん で持ってきてくれ.” or “Mikasa, please go ask your mother to bring a bottle of hot water wrapped in clothe.” Grisha is not talking about Kimi because Mikasa’s parents are already dead. He’s talking about Carla.
2.) Last part of the story, Eren, Mikasa, and Armin are resting after a long day. Grisha and Hannes are talking about the children. Grisha says 「いいんだ。 息子が自由を望み、娘や幼馴染がそれを支える 優しさと強さを持つことがわかったから」 or “That’s okay. I realized my son desires freedom and that my daughter and his childhood friend have the kindness and strength to help him.” I repeat, “My son and my daughter!” MY DAUGHTER (娘). He even calls Armin Eren’s childhood friend (幼馴染 ) instead of Mikasa. He’s not ‘in a rush’. He’s casually speaking. This is the second time Grisha calls Mikasa his daughter.
Which brings me back to book 1, Carla’s dream. While ‘father of two’ isn’t the original text, the statement isn’t wrong. Grisha is a father of two (really three). Lastly, Carla's statement is correct, too. She does say “my children’ instead of ‘the children’ because she has two children.
I’ll post the full translations and how I got them. I have friends who’s native Japanese and they helped me translate them. I also went to a few other native Japanese people to get their POV.
Conclusions:
These are my reasons why I believe Mikasa is very well adopted by the Yaegers. She not only sees Grisha and Carla as her second family and second parents, with Carla and Grisha reciprocating, but she also views Eren as her family, too, despite developing feelings for him. Eren, too, sees Mikasa as family and a close friend, nothing more or less. Sure, Eren was annoyed with Mikasa and pretty hurtful to her, but he still considered her as close family.
I’m not against EM as far as shipping, nor do I care if others ship them or don’t find them to be siblings. I just don’t like how some stans say ‘there’s no evidence’ to support the idea of them being siblings or family coded. That they were ‘always’ 'friends to lovers' dynamic. I also don’t like how certain stans insult Japanese fans who confirm the book translations are correct or act like they’re better than the professional translators. Sure, translators aren’t always correct, but they still know what they’re doing. I don’t like misinformation being spread and just want honesty. It’s not incorrect to say these two are family members or somewhat. It doesn’t make you a ‘hater’ either. I just want to clear up some translations, along with sharing my perspective on the matter.
Thank you for listening and have a great day. Good luck with the upcoming season finale.

Tumblr media
[ curated playlist ][ full story can be found here or here ]
[Overview & prologue]
➺ pairing: levi ackerman/eren jeager x fem!reader
➺content: mafia au, crime, arranged marriage, enemies to lovers, angst, lol so much angst
➺warnings: SHIT. IS. DARK. YO. violence, blood, strong language, guns/weapons, and illegal activities are all mentioned but hey, that’s attack on titan for you, so if you can handle that, you can handle this (:
chapter 5: the worst kind of monsters
You stand leaning against the black metal railing of your home’s rooftop, alone, a lit cigarette in between your fingers. Above you, the sky bleeds a crimson red and orange as day gives way into night. You look out over the smog-infested city, to the bustling streets below.
Children are scurrying back home as shops begin to close for the day. Men and women of all ages cross through the unpaved roads as they return back from work, sidestepping out of the way every once in a while to let a random member of the aristocracy drive on by in their rumbling automobiles.
Before your father came into power, the Founding Sector had been nothing more than a rundown, underdeveloped, pathetic excuse of a city. The ones in power were the only ones who ever knew what it was like to live comfortably. Slaves to their greed, they fed off the weak like ravenous vultures, all the while the people of the Founding Sector grew ever the more weak and powerless.
Your father—forced to grow up under such a corrupt and broken system — learned from a very early age how the world worked.
And the world belonged to the strong.
You were either the one in control or the one being controlled.
It was for this reason your father, a mere young working class man with nothing to his name save his wit and desire to succeed, refused to submit to the unfavorable hand he had been dealt with.
You draw your cigarette to your lips and exhale, your sharp eyes easily locating your father’s legally owned businesses and properties across the city like landmarks. You think of the illicit activities taking place from within most of them and your eyes narrow.
You will not deny there are days when you are sick with guilt. Sick with death. When your mind aches for solace and peace even though every drop of blood you’ve ever spilled screams you do not deserve it. But then you gaze out into the powerful city your cunningly ambitious father has managed to rule over through violence and fear and intimidation, and you're reminded of why the line between right and wrong does not exist for people like you.
You never asked for this life.
Neither did your father, or Levi, or Mikasa, or any of them. But the world has never apologized for forcing you all to walk down this dark and weary road, so why should you?
The strong devoured the weak.
That was the twisted reality. So your father found a way for this rigged bureaucracy to serve him instead. If that meant crime was to continue running rampant across all Sectors of Paradis, than so be it. At least he would be the one in control now.
And you…
You were to make sure it stayed that way.
Eventually, the streets below begin to clear out and the clanging of construction and manufacturing companies begins to die down as street lamps and late business signs flicker to life across the Founding Sector.
Meaningful footsteps sound behind you moments later. You don’t need to turn around to know they belong to Mikasa.
“The appointment you requested with the journalist has been scheduled for eight o’clock tomorrow morning,” she informs you, coming to stand beside you to look out over the city.
You flick the burnt ashes from your cigarette with a tap of your ring finger, letting the wind catch them in its midst, before taking another smoke. “You sent the invitation under my father’s name as I instructed?”
Mikasa nods. “Will he need to be taken care of?”
The corner of your lip curls. “Not yet.”
Based off what you wrote in your invitation, Marlo Freudenberg, a journalist for Paradis Times, thinks he is meeting with your father tomorrow morning in his office, Ymir & Co., for a brief one-on-one interview, which is why he responded so quickly. Your father is not one to entertain the prying questions of many journalists, after all.
But if Marlo thinks you haven't already figured out what his true intentions really are, he's more of an amateur than you originally thought.
You put out your cigarette against the metal rail of the rooftop. “Erwin’s little spies are hard to come by,” you say almost playfully. “I’d like to have a proper chat with this one first before we're forced to part ways.”
You turn on your heels and commence to make your way down the rooftop to the stairs leading to the balcony on the third floor. Mikasa shadows behind you until you reach the hallway on the first floor leading to the kitchen where she thinks you will join them for dinner.
The freshly rich aroma that welcomes you as you pass by the dining room on your way to the front door stirs your appetite. You manage to catch a glimpse of Niccolo, your home chef, watch with expectant eyes as Sasha and Connie bite into his exquisite looking meals with great enthusiasm and appreciation. Jean and Historia, seated beside them, are the only ones who notice you walk by.
You’re almost to the front door when Historia calls after you. “Anya? Aren’t you staying for dinner?”
A glimpse over your shoulder tells you she’s popped her head out of the dining room, along with Mikasa and Jean.
“I need to check on something,” you mutter reluctantly.
“You haven’t eaten anything since this morning,” Mikasa points out almost accusingly.
“I’m fine. I won’t be long. I’ll be just around the corner.”
Mikasa begins to stride over towards you with the full intention of chaining you to the dining table if that’s what it took to get you to sit down and eat.
“It’s fine.” Jean steps in her path, a hand in the air to get her to stop. “I’ll go with her. I’ll make sure she eats something at one of the pubs.”
“I’ll go too,” Historia offers, leaving the dining room to reach for her coat.
“Maybe we should all go,” Connie suggests reluctantly, not wanting to leave his precious meal behind so soon. “Last time she was alone with Jean she nearly died and Levi almost had our heads.”
Jean’s face flushes as he turns on him angrily. “And what the hell were you doing? Stuffing yourself with food like a damn useless boar?”
“Huh?!” Connie exclaims indignantly.
You roll your eyes and head out the door as they continue their bickering, not willing to wait for them to come to an arrangement.
The moment you step out, however, you inwardly grimace at your timing.
Eren is walking up the porch to the townhouse next door, where Levi’s men are stationed, key in hand and ready to head inside. Levi had insisted his people be the ones to keep an eye on him, since no one trusted him enough to have him anywhere near you, let alone living under the same roof.
A swift glimpse in Eren’s direction confirms he’s just arrived from your father’s office. He carries a leather suitcase in hand and wears a dark grey tailored suit that helps him fit the role you’ve assigned him well.
You test your luck and walk forward into the streets, needing to head past him in order to get to the alley behind The Red Rose — your destination for tonight — but your presence doesn’t go unnoticed by him. The second he recognizes you, his face lights up and he begins to walk towards you.
“Anya!” He waves at you thinking that might get your attention, but you blatantly ignore him, not wanting to peer into those doe-like eyes of his if you could help it.
This doesn’t seem to derail him though. He's close enough now you catch him from your peripheral vision as he extends a hand out to try and reach out to you.
“Oi!” Jean quickly appears beside you, roughly shoving Eren back before he can touch you.
You don’t miss a step in your stride as you leave Jean to deal with Eren, but you can still hear Jean loud and clear behind you, pointing a threatening finger at Eren’s chest.
“Try going anywhere near her again,” Jean growls, “and I’ll have you wishing she had never spared your life at all.”
“Jean!” Historia chides, stepping in to steer him away from Eren and back in your direction. “He only wanted to say hello. You don’t have to be so hostile with him all the time.”
Jean lets out a grumble of disagreement before they both fall into step beside you, failing to notice the amused glimmer in your eye.
There is no denying how much Jean despises Eren. Whether it’s because he doesn’t trust him or because Eren had bruised his ego by saving you in his place from your encounter with Floch, Jean was looking for any kind of excuse to get his hands on Eren. To prove to you he needed to be gotten ridden of. And it was killing him that despite Levi’s objection, you were still adamant on keeping Eren close — to you, to your circle, and now to the inner workings of Ymir & Co.
Or at least that’s what it looks like to him.
You glimpse over your shoulder to Historia, an assistant to one of your father’s legal advisors, and the one you assigned to oversee Eren’s work at your father's company.
“Has he settled in well?” you ask her casually, not needing to mention Eren’s name for her to know you were talking about him.
Eren’s current position there was to serve as your father’s administrative assistant — a temporary role you wanted him to perform to help determine if he was fit for the actual position you had in mind for him.
It’s been over a few weeks now since you first made his acquaintance, and you find it rather suspicious that in all that time, not once has he attempted to leave town. You’ve allowed him to walk the streets of your city freely, without any threat of your people tailing after him. He could have used any moment to make his escape. And yet, at the end of the day, the boy still kept coming back.
You don’t spare Eren a second glance as you continue down the street for the same reason Historia is looking at him over her shoulder with a sympathetic look in her eye. Given Eren’s unexplainable attachment to you, he’s probably standing in the middle of the road watching you leave the way a puppy looks when their master leaves them behind. Confused and hurt, but still loyally waiting for their return.
Historia turns her head forward again. She nods beside you. “You were right about him. He’s clever as he is charming. He’s already interacted with some of your father’s usual clients, and there’s no denying he's got a way with people.”
Jean scoffs, not at all impressed, but Historia ignores him. Her softhearted sapphire eyes are pinned on you. “He’s been asking for you.”
But your face remains indifferent. “I’m flattered.”
She frowns. “Anya—”
You throw her a warning look and she lowers her gaze, dropping the subject.
You make one quick stop at the fish market, ignoring the odd looks Jean and Historia give each other when you ask for any leftover tuna or sardines from today, before heading to the Red Rose.
As the pub appears within your line of sight, Jean goes ahead and stops in front of the entrance where many of your father’s men are already stationed so he can inform them of your presence. Ever since the attempt on your life, your father has doubled the amount of men in your area to help patrol town. Unfortunately, that means any chance for Erwin to make any more bold appearances grow all the more slim.
When you confronted Hannes about why he'd failed to mention to you Erwin’s little surprise visits to the pub, he claimed it was because of how difficult it was to keep track of the amount of people that go in and out of the pub ever day. If Eren had spotted him, it had been because ever since Hannes had hired him, Hannes had spent less and less time out front serving drinks for him to notice.
To some degree, you believed him. If only because you knew that nowadays, he was always passed out, drunk, somewhere in the back.
“Oi!” Jean calls after you when he sees you walk past the entrance of Red Rose. “Where are you going?”
You turn the corner into the narrow alleyway behind the pub where you spotted the little furball a few weeks ago.
“Anya, what is it?” Historia asks, peering into the dark alley behind you.
You raise a finger to your lips to silence her and signal for her to stay back as you see her begin to follow you, but Historia refuses.
“I’m not letting you walk into a dark alleyway on your own,” she hisses behind you.
Jean’s footsteps stop short beside Historia. “What is she doing?”
You tear open the small newspaper-wrapped package you’ve been carrying in your hand from the fish market and pull out a sardine.
Trash bags rustle on the floor near a dumpster to your left and when you crouch down, a pair of eyes flash in the dark.
You hum in delight. “There you are.”
You toss the small piece of fish a few feet in front of you to lure the kit out. It had taken shelter under a stack of cardboard boxes, but the moment it caught the scent of food it slowly made its way out.
It’s black fur blended well against the darkness of the alley. If it weren’t for its bright, glowing eyes you wouldn’t have been able to pinpoint where it was.
Just a few weeks ago you’d seen a female cat with her young litter foraging for food around the back of the pub. They must have relocated soon after because you never saw them again, but being the runt in the litter, this last one must have been left behind. It couldn’t have been any older than three weeks old when you first heard its mewling on your way back from the pub.
Out of curiosity, you’d gone in search of the noise and came across the little black thing stumbling its way around the alleyway looking for food.
For a while you just stood there and watched as it struggled.
You knew that without the mother to fend for it, it was not going to survive on its own. It looked so small and frail in comparison to its surroundings, so helpless, you were reminded of that day as a kid when your mother was taken from you. When you too learned what it was like to be afraid and powerless. But like all things born of this world with a will to live, you learned how to survive. Instead of being afraid, you became something to fear. And if this little thing wished to live despite its unfavorable circumstances, it would learn this too.
You would give it a week before deciding if it possessed the strength and determination necessary to live and survive on its own. You had no interest in weaklings, and if this one didn’t fit your requirements, you would find another that did.
Assessing it up closely now, you’re impressed by how nicely it has grown in size since you last saw it. It has to be at least five weeks old, which means it’s much more curiously aware of its surroundings than before, and within seconds, it devours the piece of sardine you've offered it.
It meows at you for another and starts to approach you cautiously, sniffing out the rest of the fish you carry in your hand.
But then Jean steps forward too abruptly and startles it, having peered over your shoulder to check what you were doing.
“A flea-infested stray?” he asks incredulously beside you. “That’s what we came here for?”
The kitten hisses at him in warning. Jean has stepped far too closely than the kit is comfortable with. It’s back is arched towards him with its hairs raised and its ears flattened backward on its head—pupils dilated.
You smile approvingly at the kitten's reaction. In the short time its lived out on the streets, its learned to be distrustful of humans — and much rightfully so. Humans are the worst.
As you were about to prove it.
Dropping another piece of sardine in front of you to warrant its attention, you take advantage while it’s distracted to reach for its scruff.
“Don’t touch it!” Jean scolds you, pulling your hand back. “It's feral. It’s probably got rabies.”
The cat mistakes Jean’s quick hand movement as a threat and scratches him across the hand with its sharp claws with enough ferocity to draw blood. Jean curses and pulls his hand back as you raise your eyebrows in surprise.
Historia stifles a giggle. “It doesn’t seem to like you very much, Jean.”
“Vicious little thing, aren’t you?” you muse as it resumes munching on the last scraps of raw fish on the floor when it feels Jean no longer poses a threat to him.
Before it has time to finish it, however, you snatch it by the scruff before it can fight back and you rise to your feet with it. It hangs helplessly in your hand with its paws out in front of him. You tap its pink nose. “We’re going to get along just nicely.”
You hand the leftover fish to Historia despite your new companion’s meows of protest. But it's already associated your scent now with food so it believes you’ll provide him with more if it behaves and waits a little longer.
Jean and Historia follow after you as you begin to head back home, but Jean has his scratched hand cupped in his other hand with a sulking face. “You better have a good reason as to why you're bringing that bloody thing home with us.”
You pet the mangy fur of the creature in your arms mindlessly. It looks to you and meows before it starts purring at your touch, comforted by the scent of fish in your hands. As you pass under a lamppost, you notice the cat’s eyes are bright and green, like fresh blades of grass.
“There’s a very special person I’d like to befriend at the park,” you tell Jean and Historia. “He's very fond of these furballs.” You raise the black cat to your eye level, noticing it's still very small for his age given his entire body fits in the palm of your hand. “My walks to the park will prove most promising with this one in my pocket.”
The following morning Connie drives you over to Ymir & Co. in a sleek black automobile, gifted to you by your father now that you were enforcing business meetings further out into the city more frequently.
Mikasa sits in the front passenger's seat next to Connie while you sit in the back of the car, gazing impassively outside your window with an elbow propped up against the door frame. Outside, the people of the Founding Sector scurry about, rushing to get to work and start their day. They’re familiar with the type of vehicles you and your family own, so when they recognize your car drive past them, they nod towards your car respectfully before continuing on their way.
Ymir & Co. is located in the heart of the city, and it’s where your father handles the legal side of business. You drive past one of your father’s warehouses a few blocks from your townhouse, where his men are most likely finalizing the last preparations necessary to ship out the manufactured commodities over to Marley as agreed upon, along with various misplaced military weapons hidden in the cargo.
If anyone were to discover these weapons had been sent over to aid enemy nations, like that of Marley, when Paradis was on the brink of war with them for wanting to extract Paradis of its natural resources, the ones responsible would be found guilty of treason and imprisoned for life, if not sentenced to death.
You look to the east of town, where the Founding Sector’s canal networks currently send illicit goods into the heart of the city, per the requests of many powerful lords and elected officials, who await for them with open arms and pockets full of money.
There was a time when you used to look down on them all for their unscrupulous ways. As a child, you would often hear of their appalling demands and just the mere sight of them afterwards sickened you to your stomach. But after your childhood became overrun with death and violence, you grew numb to humanity’s sinful nature. You came to realize there was no use changing it. Your father understood this better than anyone. The intricate web of criminal activity he was able to form in the underworld, embedded so deep in the Founding Sector only those within his circle knew just how deep it truly lied, proves it.
Such was his network of clients — corrupted to the core, requesting all kinds of services ranging from the legal to the illegal, and willing to pay good money in exchange for the guaranteed promise of delivery — that made this business so profitable. But your father also had a reputation to uphold as CEO of a highly successful car manufacturing company. And to continue holding onto that respectable power and status, all legal matters needed to come first.
Which is where Eren would come in.
Your father needed a spokesman. Someone to represent him whenever he couldn’t attend a certain business meeting for Ymir &Co., or whenever he needed someone to simply whisper in his ear the names of people he encountered at charity events or other important social gatherings so as to appear interested and involved.
Ymir had originally wanted it to be you. So he could show you off proudly as his one and only heir. But your father had raised his taste in business partners. He was now keeping senators, diplomats, leaders of entire countries, for company — people whose presence required you to play civil.
And you were never one for diplomacy.
To keep the bridges your father had built with his new affluential clients, your father needed someone tailored to their liking. Someone with a welcoming face and charming personality, capable of striking a deal with them because he knew how to put on a fake smile and make it look genuine. Someone docile and patient, who didn’t appear like a threat and could follow their social rules and etiquette until he had them letting down their guard enough to attack.
Eren checked all these boxes perfectly, and as Historia mentioned earlier, was doing so already.
When you brought this up to your father, you assured him that he lost nothing with using him. Eren would only ever be informed of the legal parts of business. He would have no access to the records or dealings that your father partook in outside of the law because all incriminating evidence was stored outside of that office. In a room that only you, your father, and Levi had access to. And after showing your father Eren’s identification papers, along with a photo of him, he could not deny you that he fit the part well. All Eren needed was to prove whether he had the skills necessary to take on such a task.
The boy also seemed to be willing to do anything to please you, and you would have mentioned this to your father — to assure him of your confidence in this plan — but after the way Eren saw you kill another man in cold blood without hesitation, you weren’t so sure.
Armin would have been an alternatively ideal and safe choice after you, if his name hadn’t already been marked and linked to the underworld. The majority of your cadre’s identities, actually, had already been defaced in some shape or form before coming to you.
But it did not matter; you needed Armin down in the Colossal Sector more.
The day you had been targeted, he had been in the area on business. Once he knew you were out of danger, he returned back to the Colossal Sector without a moments waste, despite having left it in safe hands. Bertholdt’s clan may have bent the knee to House Ymir, but tensions still ran high between families, and only Armin was capable of keeping them all in check. He was wickedly clever. He knew what made people tick, which made it easy for him to find people’s weaknesses and manipulate them to your advantage. A skillset of his you valued greatly.
Ten or so minutes later, you arrive at the red-bricked building where Ymir & Co.’s business partners frequent and where your father’s prestigious looking office is located.
You make your way up the staircase with Connie and Mikasa behind you, passing through the open glass doors and richly warm colored hues of the main parlor.
Not bothering with the receptionist at the front desk, you walk right past her and take the elevator up to the last floor where your father’s office as CEO is located. Mikasa and Connie join you inside. When you arrive at the top floor, Connie stays behind and stations himself beside the elevator’s sliding black gates while you and Mikasa head down the end of the hallway to your father’s office.
A metal sign with your father’s name on it and the word CEO underneath is framed on the wall beside a dark cherry wooden door. You open it and find Eren sitting behind a desk to your right. Historia stands over his shoulder, in the middle of explaining something to him.
At the sight of you, Eren stands up so suddenly, the chair behind him nearly tips over. He was not expecting you to make an appearance at the office and it’s caught him by surprise.
“Anya,” he says in a daze, as if not quite believing you’re standing in front of him.
Historia clears her throat. “You’re early,” she notes, beginning to move towards you so as to draw your attention away from Eren’s reaction. “Have you had breakfast? I can order you something to eat—”
“I won’t be staying long,” you reply, already half way across the reception’s area. “Send him in when he arrives.”
From your peripherals you catch Eren attempt to follow you, but Historia rests a hand on his shoulder and manages to keep him seated at his desk.
You turn the corner to the right and walk through the open door of your father’s office where you’re immediately welcomed with the smell of expensive leather, fine wood, and burnt cigarettes. The blinds are drawn, with only a small sliver of golden sunlight to seep through, but there’s something about this dim lighting that makes you feel powerful the second you walk in; you feel right at home.
Ymir’s desk is made of rich, dark wood and is sparsely populated by writing tools, a telephone, a cigarette tray, and two tall lamps. One on each side to provide him light during the late hours of the night. Behind his desk is a wooden shelf with a small collection of decorative books and trinkets on display, and to his right is a metal filing cabinet pushed up against the wall. Beside it, a little farther to the left, is a small table where he keeps some fine bottles of scotch and bourbon, a pair of drinking glasses, and some fresh ice that Historia must have recently set up for you.
You take a seat on your father’s black leather padded chair behind his desk as Mikasa closes the door behind her. She faces you, her jaw set, and you sigh, bracing yourself. You cannot avoid this conversation with her any longer.
“Go on then, Mikasa. Out with it.”
Mikasa crosses her arms across her chest and rests her back against the wall beside the door. “Levi is right. You can’t keep collecting any more of these strays. One of these days they’re going to betray you.”
You shrug, nonplussed. “If the cat remains feral, we can always toss it back out.”
She throws you a deathly glare and you try not to smirk. You know she is referring to Eren, but she’s so easy to rattle you enjoy teasing her when you can.
“You think keeping him confined within these walls is going to shield him from the things that go on outside this office?” she questions. “He knows who you are. He’s aware of your father’s reputation. The longer you keep him at your side, the higher chance he has of finding something to use against you —against your father.”
You meet Mikasa’s troubled gaze with steady eyes. “His sole purpose is to serve as the face of this company. Nothing more.” Eren may have an inkling about the kind of activities you and your family are involved with outside of Ymir & Co., but he cannot begin to comprehend the exact kind of business that entails. And he never will.
Mikasa raises an eyebrow and crosses her arms over her chest. “Right. But does he know that?”
You roll your eyes, a look of distaste on your face at her underlying meaning. “Whatever perfect vision he has of me will shatter soon enough, if it hasn’t already.”
Mikasa frowns. “That’s the problem.” She begins to cut across the room towards you. “He knows you’re spoken for. He’s got a good sense of what you do for a living — I mean, you killed a man in front of him. A police officer, at that. All things that would have any normal person running, yet he refuses to stay away.” She shakes her head with open annoyance. “You should see the way his eyes light up whenever you walk into the room.”
You prop your elbow against the arm rest of your father’s chair and rest your chin on your fist. Mikasa’s suspicions mirror your own so you surprise her by not dismissing her concerns as you usually do. Jean is also very much against Eren’s presence. Mostly because they cannot be assured of Eren’s true intentions with you, and you have too many enemies on your back for Eren not to raise mistrust amongst your inner circle…
You flick a subtle gaze over to Mikasa at the thought of the rest of your cadre.
Mikasa, Armin, Jean, Sasha, Connie, Historia — all loyal to you because you had saved them all from a fate worse than death. When the world turned its back on them, you gave them a second chance at life — even if it that life was one of crime. The fact that you went out of your way for them, risked your own life and your own people to save them, is what ultimately won you their undying loyalty. They would die before letting anything happen to you.
Except…Eren is not like all your other strays.
You cadre had all suffered. They had known pain before coming to you. Eren had not. And that’s what has your team worried. They are all well acquainted with the darkest parts of humanity, and thus understand why you do what you do, but Eren never will. The second he finds out what you are truly capable of, he will not hesitate to turn to the law and make you pay your dues.
A knock sounds at your father’s door and your attention cuts to Historia as she opens the door to let herself in. But a hint of sadness envelops you at the sight of her. The softness in her eyes and inviting aura she radiates with her charm is the most deceiving part about her; it’s also what makes her the most dangerous.
If you didn’t know any better you would think she’s lived a carefree, happy life, alongside a family who loves her and wishes only the best for her.
But, you do know her.
You know the kind of life she’s lived. Of the grotesque filth you tried wiping off her golden hair and skin the night you set her free from her captors. But no amount of water or soap could remove the amount of scars traced across her body, and it’s that gentleness in her demeanor she carries with her always that catches you off guard. Because you are incapable of smiling the way she can.
As if everything was all right in the world.
As if she wasn’t terribly broken inside.
It always made you wonder if Historia would behave any differently — less pleasant, more angry, more real — if you had been able to save the brunette as well. But Historia never spoke of the girl with the freckled face, who had looked after her protectively inside the brothel. The selfless girl who died helping Historia get away — to you.
“The journalist from Paradis Times is here,” Historia announces, snapping your attention back into place.
She steps aside to signal the journalist to come in and you amuse yourself by the look of confusion that quickly settles across his features at the sight of you sitting in your father’s chair. At Mikasa standing to your right.
“Mr. Marlo Freudenberg,” you announce in that deceptively inviting tone of yours, leaning back in your father’s leather chair to give Erwin’s little spy a once over. “You have no idea how much I’ve been dying to meet you.”
Marlo Freudenberg was a tall young man with a diamond-shaped face, black bowl-cut hair, a beaklike nose, and dark brown eyes. He carries a dark grey coat in his arm and a brown leather suitcase where you assume he stores all his notebook and pens to take notes. He glances over nervously to Historia and Mikasa as they begin to take their leave.
“I was…I was told I would be meeting with Mr. Ymir today,” he stumbles out.
“Right.“ You offer him a wicked side grin as Mikasa closes the door shut behind her. “About that…”
Marlo might have thought —or perhaps had it been Erwin?—that by setting up a meeting with your father at his company’s office, under the watchful eye of the public, Ymir would never risk acting out on a threat so openly. That by being in his office with so many potential, respectable witnesses, his safety was guaranteed. So the fact you’re here instead changes things significantly.
He seems well aware of how wild and unpredictable you are, and the danger of being left alone in a closed room with you based on the way his eyes flicker over to the door warily.
Reaching into the inner pocket of you coat for your pack of cigarettes, you take your time lighting one up, enjoying the fear and uneasiness you evoke in him as he watches your every move, not knowing what you’ll do next. You finally lean back in your chair and put your feet up on the desk, blowing the first smoke upwards.
“You're not the first journalist to request a meeting with my father and get denied,” you begin most calmly. “Inquiries after inquires he receives. Every day.” You give the cigarette in your hand a light tap and let the ash fall on a tray nearby. “Your very own list of questions might have gotten lost amongst the rest if I hadn’t come across them first.” You flick your gaze up at him, an undertone of danger in your voice. “And your questions have garnered my attention, Mr. Freudenberg.”
You nod to the chair across your father's desk. “Have a seat.”
Marlo swallows at your command, throwing the door behind him one final look, before gingerly taking a seat at the chair you’ve indicated. He’s realized that Mikasa is probably waiting outside the door and that there is no way out for him until you allow there to be.
“I’ve read your articles, Mr. Freudenberg,” you continue coolly while he loosens his tie with unsteady fingers. “You consider yourself an honorable man, willing to stand up against corruption. You wish to empower your readers to do the same. To not be afraid of those in power and bring about change.”
You blow out a last line of smoke from your cigarette before putting it out. “I commend you. I really do. It takes a lot of courage to play the hero.” You let out a heavy sigh before getting out of your chair to circle around the desk. “If only you weren’t trying so hard to dig into my father’s past.”
Marlo’s jaw clenches as you lean against your father’s desk in front of him, hearing the threat in your words, but his eyes remain leveled to the empty chair where you’d been sitting. His voice, unyielding. “The people of this city deserve to know about the kind of leaders who represent them.”
“My father is nothing but a small, working class man who made his fortune by working hard,” you correct him, an edge to your voice. “Do not write him off as the villain Erwin Smith is trying to sell him as.”
His stoic expression falters for a brief second. “Erwin Smith? I don’t understand. What does the Chief of Police have to do —”
You laugh mockingly. “Oh, but Erwin Smith has everything to do with this, my friend! He hired you to tear my father’s image apart, did he not?” You swiftly reach into the pocket of his coat and pull out the voice recorder Marlo had intended to use to record your father during his interview. You’d seen him subtly reach for it when he first walked in, and you turn if off with a click. “To use any means necessary to gather your evidence so you can release it to the media. He risked your life by setting up your meeting with my father here, and yet you still chose to walk in here willingly.”
You step away to fix yourself a drink from your father’s bottle of scotch. You serve one for Marlo as well before heading back to him with both drinks in hand.
“Tell me,” you say curiously, holding out his drink to him, which he takes somewhat mindlessly. “What inspirational speech did he give you for you to give up your life for him so easily? Did he share with you his vision of the world? Free of evil and corruption?” You read his tense posture and smirk as you take a drink from your glass. “He made you believe you were important, didn’t he? That despite the danger, what you would accomplish here”— you gesture to the space between you and him — “would be for the greater good. And if you died, it would be an honorable death. That your life’s sacrifice was a step towards the betterment of mankind.”
His refusal to look at you tells you you’re right.
“He does not care for you, Mr. Freudenberg. You are all just pieces of pawns for him to use in his grand scheme of things.” You take another sip of your drink. “Which is most unfortunate, really. Your noble, white knight has ruined more lives than you will ever know. And for what?” Your voice drips with venom. “All his life he’s been chasing after a pipe dream, and deluded others to do the same.” You shake your head. “This whole world, this society,” you say emphatically, circling your hand in the air you nearly spill your drink, “is founded on corruption. You cannot change it.” You narrow your eyes at Marlo in warning. “If you do not accept this, you will die for nothing, as will the people of this city — your readers.”
Marlo’s grip on the drink in his hand has his knuckles turning deathly white, that you wonder if he’ll break the glass. “You wish for me to turn a blind eye to everything wrong in the world?” he asks, voice strained. “Like some spineless coward?” He finally meets your gaze. “No. My heart will not allow it. I cannot live in such a world.” He firmly places his drink on your father’s desk. “I refuse.”
You study the deep resolve in his eyes closely before lowering your gaze with lament. “All I’ve said,” you mutter quietly, “and you still think he’s on the side of the angels. Is it because he’s offered you money to pay for your daughter’s treatment?”
Marlo’s face pales. “What — What are you talking about?”
You give him a pointed look. “Come on now, Mr. Freudenberg. I make it my business to know things — just like you. And I not only know what Erwin Smith hired you for, but I also know of your family. Your wife — Hitch, was it?” You place your cup of glass on top of some books by your father’s desk to pull out a dainty golden locket from the pocket of your coat. “And your only child, Freya, who is terribly ill.”
You let the locket fall out of your hand, using its golden necklace to dangle it in front of him.
A noteworthy gift from Sasha, you had to admit, considering she had nicked it from his daughter’s room while her mother bathed her. Inside the locket is a mini portrait of five-year-old Freya being held in Hitch’s arms with Marlo standing behind her. Engraved in the back with fancy letters was Freya’s name.
Marlo’s eyes widen at the sight of it in your hands and he lunges for it, but you pull it back out of reach before he can take it. “Uh, uh, uh. Not so fast.”
Despite how Marlo stands looming over you, you are not at all threatened by him. You wave a hand for him to back away and he obeys you. Reluctantly, but without protest. With the way his wide eyes are full of dread at the thought of you hurting his family, he’s at your complete mercy.
“Please,” he begins to say, “don’t—”
You raise a finger to silence him and his mouth clamps shut as you force him to wait.
“Here is my offer, Mr. Freudenberg: I will pay for your daughter’s medical expenses and I will make it that you and your family live a safe, and comfortable life.”
He opens his mouth to protest, but you cut him off.
“Do not give me an answer just yet. Think it over first. Think of your daughter. If you die, do you really think Erwin will keep his word and look after her? You cannot deny the gamble Erwin took with you. The chances of you succeeding here were slim. By giving you this job, he knew he was most likely sending you to die.”
Marlo frowns, looking hesitant, and you watch as the seed of doubt you’ve planted begins to grow.
“This is what he does, Marlo,” you insist with brows knitted in concern. “He sends people to their deaths. Do not give him the power to do with you what he wills as he’s done with so many others.”
He slowly sinks back down into his chair, an expression of defeat woven in his features.
“If you insist on sparking change and influencing the mind of the people,” you go on, unable to hone down the malice in your voice, “you will only be leading them straight to their deaths. And you will be no better than him: a monster.”
This doesn’t seem to sit well with Marlo, however, and you sense the change in him almost immediately. “I fail to see how wanting the best for humanity makes you a monster,” he says through gritted teeth, glaring up at you.
Your expression hardens as you catch the heroic ardor in his eyes. He’s made you aware of his decision without even realizing it and you can’t help your disappointment.
You break eye contact with him to reach back for your drink and throw the last of it down your throat before going over to place the cup face down on the table with the rest of your father’s drinks. “The worst kind of monsters are those who don’t think they’re monsters.”
Marlo’s own drink, which he’d left untouched on your father’s desk, is in your other hand. You give it a swirl.
“You have twenty four hours to collect whatever research you have managed to get your hands on for this story and deliver it all to me,” you say with finality. “You betray me, you submit any of your work for publishing, and I come for you instead.”
He takes this as his cue to leave and numbly makes his way to the door while you down his drink in one go.
“And something you should know about me, Mr. Freudenberg,” you forewarn behind him as you place the empty cup face down next to your other one.
Marlo stops halfway to the door and turns to you. The familiar look of resentment you rouse in your enemies settling well over his features. You toss his daughter’s necklace for him to catch.
“I always keep my word.”
Moments later, Eren catches you in the hallway as you try to leave your father’s office.
“Anya!” you hear him call behind you. “Wait!”
Mikasa stands a few feet ahead of you, eyes fixed on Eren from over your shoulder as you hear him approach you.
He’d skittered out of his desk the second you walked past him in the reception’s area, and with no sign of Historia there to stop him, he did not hesitate to chase after you.
“Anya!”
Your nails dig into the palm of your hands as he keeps calling your name, frustrated at his inability to take a hint. Ignoring him was clearly getting you nowhere, so you stop short in the middle of the hallway, most unwillingly, your back to him. When Eren realizes he has your attention, his footsteps come to a halt a few feet behind you.
“Why are you avoiding me?” he asks quietly, almost petulantly. “You spared my life that day, but ever since then you won’t even look at me.”
You scoff dismissively and resume your leave, hating that Mikasa was right about his undying attachment for you, but the boy is deeply wounded and unwilling to hide it.
“Do you regret saving me that much?” you hear him muster out behind you, his voice pained, as if afraid to hear the answer.
His words stop you dead in your tracks.
“Saving you?”
You let out a sharp laugh, turning to face him.
“What makes you think I saved you?”
His bright green eyes are visibly hurt as he looks to you from across the hall, but your piercing gaze remains cold and dangerous as you stride towards him.
Eren watches you wearily as you come to stand in front of him. He manages to hold his ground, but your disdain is written all over your face he struggles from flinching away.
“You exist because I allow it,” you snarl at him, inches from his face, “and you will die when I demand it.”
You turn on your heels and leave, not needing a response from him, but you’re left with a bitter taste in your mouth, as if you’ve swallowed down poison. But you refuse to take the antidote; refuse to let doubt cloud your judgment.
You storm out of there before the crushed look and anguish on Eren’s face remains permanently branded across your mind, and before the guilt, of knowing just how much you’re bound to ruin him, starts to catch up to you.
Later that evening Sasha knocks at your bedroom door. You’re lying on your stomach in bed with your elbows propped on the mattress and your chin in the palm of your hands, watching as your little black alley cat frolics around on the floor in front of you.
“Did you retrieve it?” you ask Sasha as she makes her way inside.
She places a manila envelope beside you on the bed. The article about your father Marlo had tried to deliver to the presses despite your warning, tucked safely inside.
“Any problems?”
She shrugs. “Nothing I couldn’t handle it.”
You let out a heavy sigh, hating that the journalist had to go on and be so predictable, because now you had to drag yourself out of bed and pay him a visit all the way across the city, when all you wanted to do tonight was catch up on your sleep.
It was tiring, always being right.
After your meeting with Marlo, you’d sent Sasha to monitor the Paradis Times building for any signs of him while you had Connie tail him the second he left your father’s office.
Leaving your bed, you retrieve your weapons from your bedside table and begin to strap them to their respective places across your person.
It was truly a pity about Marlo.
You’d tried to warn him about Erwin, but that hard look in his eyes at the end of your meeting with him told you Erwin’s scrupulous ideals were already planted in him too deeply. There was nothing you could say that would change his mind.
Even when you’d offered him the money for his daughter’s treatment, you knew he wasn’t going to accept it. Not when he knew where that kind of money came from.
Swiping the manila envelope from your bed, you begin to open it as you make your way out the door, your four-legged creature following behind you like a small shadow. It hurries on past you and disappears somewhere downstairs, probably in the direction of the kitchen where it hopes Niccolo will feed it some scraps before dinner.
“I could have spared you the trouble of doing it yourself,” Sasha says, coming up beside you as you head down the stairs while you skim through the article Marlo had risked his life to send to the presses. “I had eyes on him from above the whole time he was there. I could have taken him out at any moment before he sneaked out from the back and drove off. If he’s got any brains, he’ll be trying to make a run for it right about now.”
But you disagree.
When you had asked Sasha to keep tabs on the Paradis Times building, you’d done so with the assumption that Erwin had provided Marlo with some form of protection for him and his family, since he knew what would happen once it became known he had gone against your wishes. Connie had followed Marlo all the way to his home and only confirmed this for you when he’d returned to report the number of coppers stationed at every corner of his home. Whatever trouble Sasha had come across in her interception of the article had come from Erwin’s men, who had been patrolling the area from your people so as to assure Marlo’s success.
You’d asked Sasha to maintain secrecy and act as quickly as possible so as to avoid any unwanted attention since she’d be working out in broad daylight. You trusted her skillsets to get the job done so you had her act alone, not wanting any more of your people in the area than necessary. It’s why you’d had her keep Marlo alive — to make him and Erwin think he had succeeded — all the while Sasha would swoop in moments later to infiltrate the place with as much discretion as possible, and locate Marlo’s article to replace it with a fake one.
“Erwin promised Marlo security,” you explain to Sasha, ripping the article in half, “and Marlo trusts him too much to think the coppers stationed at his home will be enough to stop me.”
Sasha hears the slyness in your voice and it finally dawns on her. “You know this is a trap,” she states matter-of-factly, not at all surprised that you’re once again running into danger head on. “They’re expecting an attack from us.”
“They’re expecting an attack from my father,” you correct her. “But in Erwin’s pathetic attempt to draw him out, he’s failed to anticipate the extra chess piece on the playing board.”
You.
“Your father has plans for Erwin,” Sasha reminds you gently. “He’s told you not to interact with him until the time is ready. Is Ymir even aware of your meeting with the journalist today? Is Levi?”
You slide her a knowing look that answers her question. “I’ve waited long enough, Sasha. Don’t you think?”
Your stealthiest of spies exhales sharply through her nostrils in disapproval. You smile back at her wickedly. “Relax, love. There will be no encounters with Erwin tonight. Though, I expect him to be watching. His obsession with my father means he’s got tabs on him everywhere, waiting for him to make a wrong move. But by doing so he’s invited me to come out and play.” Your smile lights up like a loaded gun. “And I want to show him just how well I play the rules of the game.”
As you reach the bottom of the stairs, you head into the main living room where the nearest fireplace is located. Pulling out your lighter you feed the ripped pages of the article to the candle-like flame and throw it into the hearth to let its ashes collect inside. The article contained nothing that could implicate your father legally. Everything Marlo had brought up, Ymir had been cleared of years ago. But despite Marlo being unable to collect any new hard evidence that could stir open a new investigation against your father, his mention of these past allegations was enough for people’s suspicions over his questionable background to resurface amongst his new business partners. And that was not the kind of attention your father needed, or deserved.
The sound of a car engine draws near and moments later you hear the front door open.
You turn towards it and Mikasa appears in the doorway, layered in all black, much like you and Sasha.
“The car’s ready,” she informs you. “The rest of your team has already left and will meet us there. They’ve been instructed to wait until you give the signal.”
You lead Sasha and Mikasa to the front door. Opening it, you find your car and another modestly luxurious car parked outside in front of the house. Connie sits in the driver’s seat of the car behind yours while Jean leans against the side of your car with a cigarette pressed to his lips, patiently waiting for you.
It had been decided that Jean and Mikasa would accompany you in your car, while Sasha and Connie would take the spare.
You begin to climb down the stairs of the front porch when you catch sight of two running figures a small distance away.
“Eren, wait!” you hear one of them call out.
You quickly recognize them as Historia and Eren, but the way they’re racing towards you has your cadre on alert. Mikasa immediately steps in front of you protectively, not allowing you to take another step further, while Jean stands ready for them at the bottom of the stairs by your car.
Both Historia and Eren look completely disheveled and appear to be returning from the office despite their work attire reflecting their current indecorous state. There is no mistaking Historia is chasing after Eren, trying desperately to catch up to him and get him to stop. But Eren has a great lead over her and covering a lot of ground, fast. He makes it to you in no time, but Jean is there waiting for him and intercepts him before he can make it up the stairs. You inwardly wince as Eren collides into him.
“No!” Eren protests, struggling in Jean’s hold. “Anya!” The horror in his face takes you by surprise as he looks up to you with pleading eyes. “You can’t do this! Please! Call it off!
“Oi!” Jean hisses at him angrily as he struggles to hold Eren in place. “Calm down!”
“He has a family!” Eren cries out to you. “The reporter, Marlo —”
Your cadre all tense around you at his mention of the journalist, eyeing you for your reaction, but your face remains void of emotion.
“— I spoke with him when he came asking for your father a few days ago. He’s a good man!”
Historia finally reaches you and collapses on her knees before you. “Forgive me, Anya,” she says in between breaths, head bowed in shame. “He must have overheard my conversation with Jean earlier today. I should have been more careful, but he must have connected the dots on his own. I tried to stop him the second he figured out about tonight, but he’s faster than I anticipated.”
You tsk, and shift your eyes to Eren, annoyed. Why was this boy proving so damn uncontrollable? He was supposed to remain ignorant and far, far away from all this bloody business of yours, dammit. Why was he trying to meddle his way into this life of crime when his chances of surviving it were nonexistent?
“I don’t have time for this right now.” You sidestep Mikasa and resume your way down the stairs to your car. “I’ll deal with you both later,” you say as you walk past Historia and Eren.
“No! Anya!“ Eren grits his teeth as he struggles against Jean’s grip. “His daughter,” he pleads to you desperately. “She’s sick. She needs him!”
You pause mid-step. Rather surprised and mildly impressed by how he got that piece of information out of the journalist by simply striking up a conversation with him when Sasha had to follow him all day, and from afar, to collect that same intel.
Your face, however, remains blank, distant, as you resume and open the back door of your car. “Then he should have thought of her before dipping his toes in business that does not concern him.”
Before you step inside, you glance at Historia over your shoulder with evaluating eyes. Levi was out of town with Isabel and Furlan so you couldn’t rely on them to keep an eye on Eren for you while you and your cadre were away.
”Can I trust you to keep him in check,” you ask Historia none too kindly, “or is he going to run off on you again?”
Historia registers you’re talking to her and she stands at attention. “It won’t happen again,” she assures you firmly. “You can trust me.”
You give Jean a subtle nod before stepping in the car and directing your next order to Historia, gesturing to Eren. “Get him out of here. He’s causing a bloody scene.”
You shut the door and seconds later hear Jean knock the air out of Eren. You don’t need to look out your window to know Eren is on the ground, doubled over in pain.
You rest your head against your seat and close your eyes, impatiently waiting for Jean to get in to start the car so you could leave this moment behind. The look of horror and desperation on Eren’s face at your callousness is seared across your mind and you can’t shake it off. It was far too similar to the way you had once looked upon your tormentors from that day. When they’d rid you of your innocence and filled your heart, your soul, with so much darkness, the girl you were before was left buried ten feet underground.
Perhaps this is why you can’t bare having Eren anywhere near you. Because you knew that for as long as he remained within close proximity of you, you were chipping away at his innocence the way they had done away with yours.
It makes you hate yourself just a little bit more, knowing you were turning into the same monsters you’d vowed to destroy.
But then you think of what your father once told you, and your inner demons still once more. “There are two kinds of people in this world,” your father had said. “Those who live on the side of the world who have never been touched by darkness, and those who were raised in darkness.”
And you, Anya Ymir, belonged to the darkness, residing alongside the monsters and devils that reigned within it until you’d learned to make it feel like home.
As a child these creatures had threatened to devour you, sensing the softness still nestled within you. But now they recognized you as one of their own — a monster in human form. If you had any chance at retribution, your wretched soul could not waver. Could not forget: your mother’s killers had been monsters too.
A slam of a door closing snaps your eyes open. Jean has finally made his way inside your car and jabs the keys into the ignition, turning it on. Behind you, Connie’s vehicle also roars to life. Connie and Sasha leave first and Jean follows behind them seconds later, leaving Historia behind with Eren still bent over on the floor at her feet.
You draw out the revolver from your holster and pop the barrel open. Taking out the bullet with Marlo’s name from your coat, you exchange it for one of your regular bullets.
It takes a monster to destroy a monster, you remind yourself, locking the barrel back in place with a hard click. And you intend to be the deadliest.

Kenny: Why the fuck did the government put out a ‘Flee on Sight, Do Not Engage’ order about me for the whole populace??
Kuchel: I don't know, why would they be afraid of a man nicknamed "Kenny the Ripper"?
Uri Reiss: You terrify them. An Ackerman with guns and no regard for casualties is too much for them to handle.
Kenny: What a bunch of bitches. Don’t they know I only go after the Military Police?
Uri Reiss: Yeah. But according to sightings, you always look like you want to shoot whoever you come across off. No one wants to chance it. See? *shows picture taken when Kenny last went to get groceries*
Levi, peering at the picture, confused: That’s just Kenny’s normal face. Why would they think he wants to shoot them?
Kuchel: Because Kenny always looks like he wants to shoot someone.
Kenny: I have resting sniper face.

Sasha: You have never seen Star Wars? Bro, the only people in the universe who haven’t seen Star Wars are the characters in Star Wars and that’s cause they lived them, Historia! That’s because they lived the Star Wars!

Pieck, pulling her hands away: It's me!
Annie: Dammit.
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
Mikasa: You can’t shoot and kill Sasha just like that!
Gabi: Actually, I can. I totally can. I have guns and hands and a total lack of self preservation and everything.

Eren: I'm not mean. Name one mean thing I’ve ever done.

Sasha: *jumps out of a huge cake* Surprise, my Queen! It is I, your most loyal vassal!
Historia: I was expecting my husband.
Sasha: Twenty years we've known each other, Historia, and now you don't want to see me pop out of a cake. I'm offended.

Levi: Oh, right, I should have mentioned this at the beginning.
Levi, leaning in like he's about to tell a secret: I solve my problems through violence.
Erwin: *gesturing wordlessly at the pile of bodies he left behind*

Eren: Dad, can I eat the last piece of cake in the fridge?
Grisha: Sure.
Grisha: But the dining room would probably be more comfortable

Eren: I like your smile.
Mikasa: Hn.
*Later*
Mikasa: What does it mean?
Armin: That he likes your smile?
Mikasa: But like in what way? Platonically? Affectionately? Romantically?
Armin: I don't know!
*Much later*
Eren: You know Mikasa best-
Armin: No I don't. I've never met her.
Eren: What does it mean when she says "Hn." After I tell her I like her smile? Is she starting to forgive me?
Armin: *sighs*
Armin: It means she appreciates the compliment.
Eren: But in what way? Platonically? Affectionately? Romantically?
Armin: I DON'T KNOW. Go bother your brother, relationship advice is what older siblings are for!!
Eren: The last time I asked Zeke he called me a moley dumbfuck and asked for Levi to come execute him
Armin: I'm sure he didn't mean it. Ask him again, he probably changed his mind.

Ymir: People like to say, “you can't love someone unless you love yourself first". Well I call bullshit on that. I have never loved myself. But Historia? I love Historia so much I forgot what hating myself felt like.

Carla: I brought Eren to the park this afternoon.

Historia: I just realized that the word “seven” has ‘even’ in it.
Historia: That’s odd.
Erwin: Get out.
Historia: I'm the Queen! Hey! *She gets thrown out the room*
Historia, grumbling: I'm gonna make this our motto just to piss him off

*Preparing for his date with Levi*
Mika Zacharias: Final question. Your dinner date starts at seven. What time do you arrive?
Erwin: Seven. A.M. Case the restaurant, run background checks on the staff. Can the cook be trusted? If not I gotta kill him. Dispose of the body, replace him with my own guy no later than 4:30
Mike: You’re ready
Erwin: Really?
Mike: No. Everything you just said was insane and we are out of time.
