Something about Apothecary Diaries and the complexity of what it means to have a mother. Something about Maomao and her only memories of her mother being silence or a pain that has nothing to do with her but is reflected onto her anyway, and yet still engineering things so that Lakan, years later, would come to find and marry her. Something about all of the courtesans in the Verdigris House being like mother figures to Maomao, yet never paying attention to her when she cried. Something about Loulan doing everything in her power to not be a mother - taking drugs to avoid it, knowing that to have a child would be a selfish, cruel thing, even down to 'killing' the children who adore her. Something about Jinshi, and both of his mothers - the one who birthed him and the one who raised him. Anshi, and raising him to be mature and older than he should have had to be to be the opposite of his grandfather, the man who victimized her, and Ah-Duo, unable to be in his life because she chose to give him up. Something about mothers not being unconditional and uncomplicated; something about motherhood being absent, ugly, confined by circumstance or by past pain. Something about not wanting to be your mother; something about being too much like your mother. Something about how your mother haunts you regardless.

Maomao’s Atlas of Medicinal & Poisonous Plants! 🌿

This was a huge project of incorporating 50 objects into a piece that I did this year for one of my classes! There are little references to some of the plants actually mentioned within knh (if you can spot them all, you’re the coolest hehe) as well as some others located/used in China and Japan! ∩^ω^∩

Emergency Commissions Open 💔

Hey everyone — I know I’ve been MIA for a while, and I don’t usually share personal things like this, but my family and I are going through something that, sadly, many immigrant families are facing right now.

As many of you know, the situation in Los Angeles has escalated, and our Latinx community is being heavily impacted. As an immigrant with an immigrant family, we’ve been forced into hiding out of fear of being detained. It’s a terrifying and uncertain time, and it’s already affecting our ability to work and stay financially stable.

To help us stay afloat and cover some unexpected expenses, I’m opening emergency art and graphic design commissions. If you’d like to support, commissioning a piece or simply sharing this post would mean the world to me and my family.

Is dol abandoned?

truthfully, i really did wanna stop writing dol, not bc i don’t love eremika or anything, but mostly bc i was just very unhappy with dol!!! i think ive mentioned it before but i wrote dol very spur of the moment and kind of later began to plan, so it lacks some structure and i think NOW as someone who tries to be more organized it’s kind of hard to not look back and see a lot of things i’d change and such.

i also started writing dol when i was 22 and i’ve changed a lot since then!! so i feel like it’s changed with me, HOWEVER COMMA!!! it would be a disservice to not only myself, but you guys, to not finish something so special!! i just truly have had to get over me kind of hating dol a bit if im being really honest lol (among a lot of other things that have happened in the past year)
