As you had known for longer than you cared to admit, James was your weakness. Moments later, you carefully opened your door, quietly walking over to his room. 

Leaning towards the door, you hissed. "James."

No reply.

You knocked quietly, scared that any noise you made would wake his parents. "James." 

Bedsheets ruffled, and the door opened quickly. His eyes were bloodshot from the lack of sleep, but he still looked just as dreamy as you'd left him.

Leaving Potter Manor was difficult.

Ginny smirked. "Judging from the fact three wards were broken last night, I don't believe so." She shrugged, looping her arm through her husband's. "Just this once; perhaps we'll let them get away with it."

The sun peeked through the curtains, making you groan into your pillow. Ophelia laughed. "You think after six years of this, you wouldn't be complaining." 

"You thought wrong then. I will never like waking up early." You sighed, sitting up. "Why can't classes start later?"

"Because the professors want us to suffer." 

"Right." You tilted your head. "Why are you so cheery?"

"Just wanted to walk Edwards to class. We have the same one, advanced potions." 

You grinned. "I didn't know we shared that class." 

"Well, I want to be an auror and I remembered you talking about it, so..." He clapped his hands. "Ready to go?"

You nodded quickly, grabbing a muffin. "I'm right behind you." You clambered out of your seat, following James out of the Great Hall. Pamela rolled her eyes, taking a rather vindictive bite out of her biscuit. 

"She didn't even say goodbye."

"Can you tell me what this potion does?" Professor Zabini sighed, clearing his throat. "Mr.Potter?"

"It's Amortentia, sir. It creates an intense infatuation." 

The older man nodded, satisfied with James's answer. "Ms.Edwards, can you tell us how to identify this potion?"

"It's characterized by its pearl sheen and spiral steam, Professor." 

"10 points to Ravenclaw." He smiled. "Could you give us an example?" 

You blushed. "I'm sorry, sir?"

"I—" James smiled comfortingly, pushing you toward the front of the class. "Of course, sir." You stepped up to the cauldron, taking a deep breath. "I smell broom polish, salt water, and fireworks powder."

James stepped forward. Professor Zabini smiled. "Very good, Mr.Potter."

"I smell lavender, parchment, and cherry blossoms, sir." Your face turned bright red, staring at the ground.  

Zabini nodded. "Today, we will be brewing Living Death. In the past, we've given a vial of Liquid Luck as a prize, but the board has decided that giving sixth-years Liquid Luck is not a wise choice." He laughed to himself. "I think it provides an incentive to become competitive, but alas..." He clapped his hands. "Get to work!"

You sighed, shaking your head as you tried to focus on your book. "You need to stop staring at me. I'm trying to study."

James shook his head. "Well, I'm studying your face, so hold still." 

You glared up at him, slamming your book shut. "I'll be back." 

"I'll come with you then." He whispered, following after you like a lost puppy. You giggled, shoving him playfully. "Honestly, James." Turning down the aisle, you scanned the shelf for your book. "Shit."

"The book's too high." You rolled your eyes, pushing your sleeves up to your elbows. "Watch my back."

"Edwards." He waved quickly at the rest, gazing curiously at James before turning slowly back to you. "I was wondering..." He coughed, and James leaned back in his chair.

An intimidation tactic, you could only assume.

You glared at him, smiling gently at the Hufflepuff. "Yes?"

"I was wondering if you'd like to go to Hogsmeade with me." He smiled. "On a date." 

James choked on his water, causing more than just his friends to start staring at him. Rose watched in utter fascination. 

You may have been the Ravenclaw of the group, but Rose was just as smart, and she could have told anyone that you and her cousin had been sneaking around since before they came to Hogwarts. It was obvious. 

You frowned. "I'm afraid someone else has already asked me." 

He nodded slowly, looking back at James. "I see." 

You smiled quickly. "I would, however, love to go with you as a friend." 

"I'd like that, " he smiled. I'd like that very much." He clapped his hands, awkwardly stepping backward. "I'll see you around." He almost glared at James, muttering a goodbye. "Potter."

Rose laughed. "That was hard to watch."

You could tell something was off the moment James sat down and opened up a book. In the seven years you had known him, not once had be opened up a book in your presence. It annoyed you beyond belief, as he (somehow) managed to keep consistently high marks. You looked across the table, tilting your head. "You're being awfully quiet over there." 

He hummed, pushing his face further into the book. "Just studying, love." 

You shook your head, setting the textbook down haphazardly. "What's going on James?"

He ignored you, but you could tell he was itching to speak. You reached out, placing a comforting had over his. "Jamie did something happen-"

He pulled his hand back, shaking his head. "Let me study, love." 

"Don't shut me out. I can-"

He shut his book calmly, looking up at her intensely. "Do you like me?" 

You shook your head, choking on the air you'd just inhaled. "What do you-"

He scoffed, running a hand through his hair. "Then what is it? What-"

Your heart fluttered, but you pulled yourself back to reality. "I can't handle being ridiculed constantly, James. I'm sorry." You pulled your hand out of his touch, standing up. "I get it enough from my own family." 

James stood with you. "When are you going to realize she's wrong? Your sister is a god-awful excuse of a person- of a sibling." He crossed his arms. "If anything, we should talk about how I'm not good enough for you."

"You know that's not true."

"Edwards, listen to me. I've been in love with you since our second year. You're all I think about when I wake up and when I go to bed. And if you're going to let love-crazed girls ruin what we have, then you're not the person I thought you were."

You tried to form words; all you could do was look away. Staring at the library exit, you quickly realized half of the student population was staring at you.

So much for not wanting the fangirls to know.

Without sparing James another glance, you walked out of the library. 

Seconds after you had left the library, a hand grabbed your wrist, pulling you into an all too familiar (secret) passageway. You laughed. "I think this passageway is cursed."

"Don't do that." 

You rolled your eyes. "Do what, exactly?"

"Fight with me." James intertwined your fingers, pulling you closer. "Fight for me." 

A tear fell down your cheek, and you pulled your hand out of his hold, quickly wiping it away. "I don't have any fight left. I refuse to feel embarrassed for simply existing." 

His voice cracked. "I've already told you that won't be a problem. At this point, you're just making up excuses." 

"You don't get it!" She yelled. "You're Harry Potter's son. You could be the absolute worst person in the wizarding world, and people would still have respect for you. They expect great things from you; I'd be a letdown."  

He rolled his eyes. "I don't know how many times I have to tell you that I wouldn't let that happen." His eyes were pleading with you to say anything. "Was all of it a lie?"

"I-" 

"Just tell me it's a lie. Tell me that we're done, and I'll move on, I swear." He moved closer to you, your lips inches apart. "I'll leave you alone, I promise." 

You took a step back, holding yourself. "James..." 

"You're a coward." 

You scoffed. "Well, not all of us were sorted into Gryffindor." 

"That's ridiculous. This is ridiculous." He ran a hand through his hair once again. "Why are you acting like this?"

You rolled your eyes. "I'm sorry that I don't meet your standards." 

"You are my standard."

You flailed your arms, on the verge of falling into a puddle of tears. "Stop saying things like that." 

He shook his head. "No."

At that moment, you did what you thought was best. What you thought was best, for both of you. "I'm done." You pulled your bag closer, stepping away. "We're done." 

He laughed humourlessly. "You don't mean that." 

"Yes, I do." You stepped back, walking into a wall. "I mean it." 

He shook his head harder. His heart yearned to reach out and kiss you senselessly; you looked radiant in this light. You looked radiant in all lights. "Then you're a liar." 

"I've been called worse." He took a step closer, and you hiccuped, tears now falling in a constant stream. "And you promised." 

He rested his forehead against yours for a moment before taking a deep breath. Another sob left you, pressing your forehead against his in return. 

"I love you, Edwards." 

Your heart broke, watching as his eyes pleaded with yours. When he knew you wouldn't do a thing to salvage it, he collected himself, and walked away, leaving you alone.

American English localised book titles are always so unnecessary and annoying, and really diminish the literary quality of British fiction.

I don't think Americans even notice how downgraded the books they get actually are.

Everyone knows the pointless translation of Harry Potter and the 'Sorcerer's' Stone because American children weren't trusted to have basic mental competence. They also inexplicably crammed about a thousand unconnected things in the illustration. Why is the unicorn there?? Why do you have to be able to see Fluffy through the wall??? It's so BUSY. The train illustration is deliberately mysterious and enticing. Harry's 90s boyband hair tells us the era, it's restrained and deliberate!

Historic legal term, see The Foundling Museum. Consice. Evocative. Fits with titles of Halls' other work. Becomes The Lost Orphan. Less specific. What is this, a Dilly Court novel about the hundredth poor WWII girl from Liverpool or something, or a piece of literary fiction based in swathes of incredible historic research? That stock photo makes it looks like one of a thousand books of shitty trash historical romance genre fiction.

- punchy, poetic, on-theme, double meaning, is about both the setting and the main character and her journey of grief and trauma - becomes The Second Chance Store. Annoying. Twee. Sounds like The Pumpkin Spice Cafe or the thousands of imitators in the cosy romcom genre. We don't have 'thrift stores', we have 'charity shops'. The fact the shop is run by an actual charity and volunteers is integral to the story, and it's nothing like the corrupt Goodwill type thrift stores America has. Also that stock photo cover looks cheap and trash, and it isn't even what a charity shop looks like, that's what vintage shops look like and they're different. It's gone from "a love story about things" to "a novel". Massive downgrade.

The End Specialist by Drew Magary - vague, enticing, using the existing obfuscation of language around death in a faintly sci-fi way to suggest the normalisation of a mysterious process. The font is exquisite. Becomes The Postmortal. Oh. I guess this is about some immortal asshole, not the gradual societal impact of literally curing death. At least it's not a trash stock photo, but the illustration is still a massive downgrade and looks like clipart. That floating Penguin logo at the bottom isn't even centred, why is it there? The words "a novel" are hovering on one side, the top of the illustration is clipping the title, oh god it's awful. Vomitous eye catching green so you know it's sci-fi guys fr.

American publishers and marketing think their readers🇺🇸 are stupid, and the authorial🇬🇧 intent doesn't matter.

I think I take for granted what British literary culture is like though. You know we don't even pay tax on new books? Whenever I see the RRP in USD or EUR or AUD I feel so bloody bad for all of you, like the one thing Britain does right is books.

And the thing this implies is, if they're doing this to established authors in English in foreign markets, what the hell are they doing with American authors in English? Are any of your best new authors being published at all? What the hell kind of dregs are you getting because there's no way. If they diminish really great fiction with stupid titles and ugly covers to make it marketable, what amazing stuff never makes it to market at all on the grounds of being unmarketable?

Are there examples of the downgrade going the other way? I suspect not many.

The talk about the apparent misogyny present in Harry Potter is another discussion entirely about how many female characters are only introduced or relevant to the plot because of a man ( eg. Lavendar Brown, Cho Chang)

And if, if the story had more characters be smart and let them be smart, I really believe the story would be incredible because you have so much to offer! IN A MAGICAL SYSTEM! WHERE ACTING SMART WITH MAGIC > FIGHTING UNNECESSARY BATTLES !

Polyjuice potions- use an updated version which let's the user use disguises for a longer period of time ( Truly believe that Percy's research on cauldron bottoms could impact the lasting effects of potions and revolutionise the potion industry but what do I know)

Forging documents - easy in a Ministry setting where everyone is busy to forge signatures and have spy cams and bugs ( the magical version) to learn about information.

Invisibility Charm - self explanatory no? become invisible and follow and foil enemy plans

I am Laura Rose, I am far to old for this and have been role playing for a very long time. I am 25+, living in GMT. Ranger In Time: Escape From Twin Towers: Part 1

September 11th, 2001 Eleven-year-old fifth grader, ‘Risha Scott’ was carrying a box of chocolate muffins towards The World Trade Center. Next to her was her best friend, ‘Max’. They’ve both taken ballet lessons since they met in the second grade. However, last year, Risha switched to gymnastics. Today they were going to do a career project on what it’s like working in the World Trade Center. They signed in and headed for Mrs. Scott’s office. Which was on one of the top floors. Max’s father’s office was nearby and they were going to have a picnic dinner, at a concert.  As they sat down, Risha got out her sketchbook and drew about her dreams of being a gymnast and an art teacher and on the nail-painting job that she and her mom did last night while Max got out his Harry Potter and The Goblet Of Fire book. All of a sudden, a plane was coming in, towards the North Tower.  Modern Times Sadie was helping Ranger practice for the Search Dog Test. He followed her and sent them up towards the slide and Sadie hugged him. He was ready for the test. He had practiced before with Luke in the forest. If there was a REAL emergency, he would’ve responded fast. Unfortunately, he failed the test because of his habit of chasing squirrels. Despite the failure, he is still a winner to the kids. Luke and Sadie decided to take Ranger home. They’d figured that giving him a bowl of their dad’s chili would cheer him up. Back home, Ranger walked to his bed when he saw the old first aid kit humming. A while back, he dug up something in the mom’s garden and whenever it hums and/or glows, that means someone’s in danger. He opened the first-aid kit and it took him to 2001.  He arrived in a partially empty, yet messy office room. Everywhere was scattered with broken glass, binders, and legal documents. A woman named, ‘Mrs. Burt’ was going around looking for Risha and Max. Ranger grabbed the woman by her torn skirt and he started tracking the missing kids. Mrs. Burt knew there were service dogs trained to find people, but not on the floor that she was on. Quickly, Ranger found Risha and Max in a locked room. Both Ranger and Mrs. Burt pulled hard and Risha and Max were free. Mrs. Burt was relieved that her coworker’s daughter was okay. Now all that’s left is to find Mrs. Scott. Risha remembered that her mom was going to the Port Authority, so they decided to search there.  Everyone gathered up in the reception room. Papers started to fly out of the wrecked building like white butterflies. One by one, they started taking the stairs to the bottom floor for safety. Risha had her backpack with water and tissues that Mrs. Burt gave her. Max had the Magic Fist Aid Kid. With every floor they passed, Risha, Max, and Ranger stayed together while counting the number of the floors. Seventy five, Seventy four, seventy-three As they got to the ground, ash and soot surrounded the stairway. Max didn’t have his inhaler, it was back in the office. Despite this, getting out of the building was more important. Fifty-two, fifty-one, fifty.

Sophie Marie (@soph4president), a third-grade teacher in Austin, Texas, recently came under fire for certain ways she conducts her class. Her attire was also a point of contention.

“you’d think I was teaching way out west but this is downtown Austin…,” she writes.

“OK, so today I got pulled into a ‘check-in meeting’ with my administrator at school, and she had this lovely list of concerns that she wanted to bring to my attention,” Sophie explains in the video.

Included in the list is the concern that Sophie is “intentionally” teaching her third-grade students about their rights.

“But my favorite amongst them is, ‘We’ve noticed an intentional attempt at teaching your students about their legal and constitutional rights.’ That’s the concern,” she reveals. “Why are you concerned? Why is that a concern? Why does that concern you?”

Sophie, who is “queer until proven straight,” is outspoken about human rights on her social media platforms. She covers a plethora of current events, including the Queer Capitol March and Texas legislation.

“I have no other choice but to be political. life is depending on it,” reads her Instagram bio. “unwilling to die for the dow. abortion advocate.”

“I’m concerned that they find that concerning”

Commenters are equally upset that the notion of teaching young students about their own rights is seen as threatening. Others are unsurprised by this behavior, especially given that it’s taking place in the state of Texas.

“It’s such a mystery why there is a teacher shortage,” one user wrote sarcastically.

“Former Texas teacher here. This is why I can’t anymore,” a fellow teacher declared. “Also, leaving Texas this summer.”

“Are you not allowed to read Harry Potter to your students? My 3rd grade teacher Mrs. Papish read us HP & I fell in love with reading,” someone asked, referencing Sophie’s administrator’s questioning of the book series’ relevance to “grade level lesson plans.”

“I 100% wanna know what bs they had to say about your clothes too lol,” another TikTok user wrote regarding the write-up about Sophie’s “dress code” violation.

Despite Sophie’s best efforts, it seems the educational system in Texas views her integrity as a threat to the development of their youth. In actuality, however, educators like Sophie deserve an even greater platform — and stifling their practices feels dangerously ill-advised
