Now that I've finished Rome here's The State of Shows I'm watching, starting with currently airings:
For All Mankind Monarch: Legacy of Monsters With @kiranerys: Stargate SG-1 (S10) Stargate Atlantis (S03) both her first watches Fringe (S03) rewatch for both of us, but I'd missed/skipped some episodes originally. Due South (S01) her first watch but I haven't watched it since it originally aired. Foyle's War (S02) my first watch FlashForward her first watch Chernobyl also her first watch Star Trek Prodigy ditto Crusade (S01) her first watch Letterkenny (final season)
All of these alternate w whatever we feel like, random episodes of comfort shows whenever we have the time.
we are going to get back to Russian Doll, and we plan to do Poker Face, The Bear, and His Dark Materials soon-ish
Regularly watching: Stargate Universe (S01), rewatch, gets delayed whenever I end up with too much of a backlog on gifs. The Witcher (S03), I proooobably won't continue this once Henry Cavill leaves. Occasionally Watching: Robocop: The Series The Rockford Files (S05) Upcoming: Silo (S01) next up now that Rome's done Scavenger's Reign (S01) Vigil (S02) Castlevania Nocturne (S01)
I almost did Invasion or Falling Skies but I found better files for Falling Skies so Silo it is!

Heartstopper s03
! NO SPOILERS !
I am so not mentally healthy enough to watch it in one go. But who said I can make smart decisions? As of right now, I'm just sobbing over everything, and I love Isaac so so much
And Tori, I adore Tori.
Ps. I feel embarrassed by how easily/quickly I recognized that the actress that plays Elle's teacher in Heartstopper is the same one that voices Sirona in Hogwarts Legacy.

so uh, adventure time spoilers even though it's been a good decade i guess
elaborating on the tags on that last reblog, i've been goin in hard on marathoning the original adventure time series. i say 'original' because the fionna and cake thing apparently got made into a full-blown series of its own that takes place quasi-post mainline adventure time or something? who knows. been trying to remain spoiler-free
anyway. what the fuck is this show dude.
like i've always heard people mention it gets heavy, but vague memories of what i remember watching as a kid (back when cable was something i had access to, roughly during just seasons one and two) all made it very hard to put aside the original impression i had that it was just some funny quirky thing i used to watch. some fun little show where "mathmatical!" is a family-friendly exclamation for adventure and all swears and expletives are substituted with random g-rated humor
like, willing to bet everyone at this point is at least sorta familiar with the post-apocalyptic setting/backdrop running underneath it all; i remember back in its airtime when everyone treated it as a big deal, how folks here loved to theorize about it before the explicit confirmation in-show
but... now, actually sitting down to watch this all in order, seeing this silly thing slowly turn into this heavy episodic mess about loss, manipulation, the legacy you're expected to leave behind, identity (and a lack of ties to one's own), and god knows what else... the post-apoc theming's much less a Shocking Reveal, and more just... "yeah, that's just the setting. life goes on. this is how we've dealt with the fallout in trying to rebuild society, fixing our mistakes" since s03/s04.
as funny as it feels to get into a long post about a show aimed at kids and teens, we also have literal episodes like [spoilers] finn getting his own dominant arm completely torn off while trying to chase down his absent father, with the only thing stopping him from bleeding out is a mix of Cursed Artifact and Pool Of Healing fantasy tropes, going on to spend the next episode, and i mean the full fucking runtime of the episode [s06e04, "The Tower"], in a dissociative/depressive state, absentmindedly building a tower to the heavens above in some vain revenge-driven attempt to find his father again just so he can rip /his/ arm off as eye-for-an-eye payback, operating off the vague notion the dude escaped earth's orbit and is just 'up there' somewhere. the only thing that stops him and snaps him out of that state is passing out from a lack of oxygen at the elevations he reaches.
like, imagine tuning into a rerun of a random episode of this show and eleven minutes of /that/ is what you get, devoid of context. there's no adventure there. this isn't fun. but you can't bring yourself to fault the kid, either, seeing the events of the past dozen episodes that built up to that point. this little story arc is hardly the only time this kind of thing happens, and the consequences of each one of these events is never neglected by the writing team. it resonates through the rest of the story, constantly
all taken together, it feels like the main motto of this series season four and on has become some reassurance to the viewer that "life can throw a lot of shit your way, and we don't always know how to handle these things. but for better or worse, life goes on. it has to."
marathoning this series properly has been a trip that resonates close to home too often in too many ways, as weirdly high-fantasy complete nonsense as it can be. feels weird to acknowledge that.
i'm gonna miss this show dearly once i'm through with it

Here's the thing about Legacies
Like TVD, I think Legacies had the potential to be a supernatural power house like BTVS was before it but they were so stuck in the formula and doing what they'd always done before that they refused to take risks and apart of that was refusing to get rid of Julie Plec as a writer.
The TVDU was/is in desperate need of some new blood to actually take the series where it should've been taken.
Both TVD and Legacies biggest strengths were its female characters and how powerful they were capable of being but unfortunately Julie Plague had this disgusting habit of stripping them of their power just to hand it off to a male character to prop them up constantly.
She did this with Bonnie and Elena (& sometimes but not too much with Caroline) - stripping them entirely of their autonomy, turning them into a damsel in distress just so she could prop up the Salvatores.
I knew from the second it was announced Nina Dobrev was leaving the show that she was going to do with to Bonnie.
I'd hoped there would've been someone to stop her from this but I didn't hold my breath for it because we all know the TVDU writers room are just Julie Plex yes men.
Caroline was mostly spared from this (only finding herself in the whole damsel and distressing in the beginning of S01 and S07) but I think it's that way because Julie started using her as a self-insert for herself after S03 when she became oddly fixated with the Salvatore Brothers that creeped me out.
I think if I could change one thing about Legacies is make it more about female empowerment like Buffy always was. Get rid of all that stuff where they sacrifice all of Hope's storylines for ship stuff.
I mean, I love Landon and all his dorkiness. I mean I love Landon, all his dorkiness included.
Tumblr media
I mean I love Landon and his dorkiness but I think these characters should learn to exist without a relationship defining them.
But characters should be able to exist on their own without there being so reliant on who they are currently dating and that's the problem with Julie Plec. She cannot write a character without them being defined by who they are dating and she completely massacre's them when their already established as being interesting on their own and removes everything until there is nothing left but who they are in love with.
It makes me so angry that she does this and it's why I don't really accept anything that happened on TVD as cannon after she became the head writer.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds S03 is delayed. Star Trek: Legacy may not wind up being made. Star Trek: Discovery is being cancelled. And I don't care about any of that. Why?
Star Trek: Prodigy. One of the absolute shining gems of Star Trek canon, one of the finest pieces of writing for children and probably the best pipeline to introduce prospective fans to all things Trek, got cancelled because of dumbass, stupid, idiotic, moronic, "tax break" level reasons. The actors are effectively sidelined. The storylines in limbo. The characters effectively dropped into "soft canon" status due to not being mentioned in Picard or Discovery at all.
Because...
...a...
...STUDIO EXECUTIVE...
...wanted...
...to look good...
...to FUCKING INVESTORS!!!
Fuck the studios, fuck the execs, and fuck the investors. You've fucked around in the world of art like it's a fucking ponzi scheme and now you're facing the consequences!!!
"What if my favourite show is delayed due to writers strike?"
With respect, no one cares about your favourite tv shows.
This is about real people fighting for their real livelihoods, for their futures.
I cannot articulate sufficiently how unimportant the production of some tv show or other is.
