My review:

A Different Kind of Brave is a split-POV, fast paced novel about two boys with very different lives. Nico is locked up in a conversion-therapy institute, a shock collar around his neck. But now he's escaping and is determined to come back to save his best friend, Bec. Sam, however, is a rich Bond-obsessed teen who is dealing with his parents failing marriage and a break up from the boy he loved.

I really enjoyed reading through Nico's chapters, they were emotional and had a good amount of tension and depth. As he digs himself deeper and deeper into a hole, I found myself wondering how he was going to find his way back to rescue his friend and the other kids in the institute. Sam's chapters, especially in the beginning, lacked the pull that Nico's had although I enjoyed his voice and personality.

I had some issues with the pacing, since some of it felt choppy and too convenient. If the characters needed to be somewhere, everyone dropped what they were doing to fly/drive to help without question. Especially when it came to Sam, who seemingly just had a lot of things on hand when they needed them, and he had virtually no parental supervision the entire novel.

There were hints of additional plots at various times that seemingly dropped once the scene was over, and the ending felt rushed and out of place. I enjoyed this book for the first ~65% percent and then started to become frustrated at how quick things were moving.

No Way, They Were Gay?: Hidden Lives and Secret Loves Book Review

★★☆☆☆ ~ 2 out of 5 stars

One of my favorite pastimes is wandering through the nonfiction section of my local libraries to see what we’re passing off as the truth these days. This is how I stumbled upon No Way, They Were Gay?: Hidden Lives and Secret Loves by Lee Wind, a book that immediately intrigued and exasperated me in equal measure when I saw pictures of Gandhi and Abraham Lincoln on the cover. Further compelled by the back blurb that makes the (in my opinion, accurate, but sorely misused in this instance) claim that history is not as simple as a rote statement of facts but more like a series of events and circumstances interpreted and reinterpreted by various people over time, each coming from their own specific contexts and biases and contributing those to their interpretations, I checked it out. 

No Way, They Were Gay? is broken into three broad sections: men who loved men, women who loved women, and people who lived outside the gender binary. It also contains a short introduction to terms and explains some of the choices that the author made when describing historical people - such as the wildly questionable choice to refer to Charley Pankhurst (who was assigned female at birth (AFAB) but lived as a man) and Anne Lister (who is a well-known and well-documented woman who loved women but had a butch gender presentation) with they/them pronouns. I was so taken aback by this particular choice that I kept track of the pronouns used for everyone mentioned in this book and was uncomfortable to find that they were only used for masculine-leaning people who were assigned female at birth - despite the presence of a nonbinary assigned male individual. 

I understand the complexities of trying to figure out what historical figures would have identified as and what they language they would’ve used if they lived in the modern world, but I find it uncomfortable to make assumptions that are clearly rooted in a combination of assigned sex and gender presentation; nonbinary people come in all combinations of these characteristics, and they use all kinds of pronouns. I am of the opinion that it is usually most respectful to use the pronouns for people that they used for themselves, if known. And I feel that we know what Pankhurst and Lister used for themselves. 

I go in-depth about this pronoun issue not just because I care about this on a personal level (though, obviously, I do), but because it is indicative of just how pervasive and stark Wind’s biases are throughout the course of this book. Clearly, he thinks they/them pronouns are for masc AFABs. He also presents very cherry-picked evidence for his arguments about a few famous and well-documented individuals being gay - such as Abraham Lincoln. I don’t have a strong opinion on Lincoln’s sexuality, but what I do have a strong opinion on is the choice to present a friendship between two men that met the platonic standard of the time as inherently “gay” (with the strong implication here of “gay” being synonymous with a romantic relationship) while simultaneously being dismissive of/barely getting into the men’s relationships to their wives. 

This is extremely frustrating because this book covers actual historically important queer people, too, so you have to weed through the author’s fringe theories about Lincoln alongside actual facts about Bayard Rustin and Christine Jorgensen’s lives. And I want children to learn about Rustin and Jorgensen and dozens of other important queer people, but I don’t want them to learn about someone who is incredibly biased at best and incredibly sloppy and rude to certain portions of the community at worst. And additionally, because I can't trust this book, I don't know how accurate portions of it that cover individuals and topics I'm less familiar with (such as two-spirit identities or the nature of relationships between Mosotho women) are.

That is why, although I found most of the book more or less surface-level accurate, I cannot recommend it in good faith. I give it 2 out of 5 stars. Yes, it could be a basic starting point, but it’s misleading and not fully-fleshed out - look, the intended audience is children, not idiots. You can explain more complexity than this to fifth graders, and frankly, you should. This book is an attempt at validating historical queer existence that falls so embarrassingly flat because it was trying to do too much with too little information. Don’t do that. Don’t do that. There is no need to feed into this conspiracy theory that historians are hiding queer people from us when the truth is more complicated than that. There is no need to claim someone so well-known and studied is queer, when we really don’t know, just so kids recognize the name and pick up the book. They can learn a new name. In my experience, they’re generally more interested in learning about new people than adults are.

18. How many books did you buy?

actually not many!! i've been trying really hard to not do that in order to save moneyyyy. i did a pretty good job actually; almost all the books i bought this year were gifts for other people from my library's used books bookstore! i think the only exceptions were a copy of aristotle and dante dive into the waters of the world which i purchased to get it signed by the author, benjamin alire sáenz, at an event, and a copy of last night at the telegraph club by malinda lo, which i read for a class. i did get quite a few free books at this year's ala (american library association) convention though, including signed copies of barda by ngozi ukazu, the gender binary is a big lie by lee wind, and this land is our land: a blue beetle story by julio anta and jacoby salcedo, all of which are titles i loved and recommend heavily.

19. Did you use your library?

YES! i love my library, and not just because the library i primarily use right now is also my place of work. i actually have four different library cards for various systems near where i live depending on where i am at any time, and all of the different branches i visit are wonderful in different ways. if you don't have a library card, i highly recommend getting one. they're free, and can get you access to a lot of resources in addition to the full catalog of books for every age and interest. i acquire almost all my books for all my classes as a literature major through different libraries, and save a looot of money doing it.

things besides books that you can get access to through library systems if you have a card (and sometimes even if you don't):

~free passes to national parks at certain times of the year

~induction cooktops (that you can check out and return)

~3D printers and silhouette machines

~free puzzles/puzzle exchanges

~STEM and arts-related maker-kits for kids that cover a ton of topics, from circuit boards that you can put together to rube goldberg machines to music theory kits with instruments and more

~free hygiene kits including menstrual products

~free seeds for planting/seed exchanges

~audiobooks in formats like voxbooks (which have the physical book with an embedded player to read aloud as you or a kid reads; invaluable for folks w dyslexia) or playaways (small cartridges that serve as players) in addition to the classic cds

~media conversion stations where you can transfer anything like film photos/film recordings/cassettes/8-track/multiple kinds of records and vinyl into digital or electronic formats

~databases like Hoopla and Kanopy where you can borrow books and audiobooks that aren't in your library catalog and stream shows and movies for free with no more than a library card

~genealogy and family history research support and departments

~even more niche databases where you can get access to records like historical newspapers, scientific journals, and current newspapers and magazines without any kind of paywall

~collections like the Alexander Street Performing Arts Collections, where you can access and stream full theater productions shot on high quality cameras from providers like Broadway On Demand, National Theater, and the Royal Shakespeare Company, as well as music, dance, opera, historic moments on film, and a bunch more

AND A LOT MORE RESOURCES that i can't think of off the top of my head/that libraries other than the ones i'm affiliated with have. this is without even mentioning programs like free movie screenings, kids and teens programs, book clubs, etc. so seriously, your quality of life can be enhanced by actively using your local library and finding out what they offer so easily with no cost at all to you.

and the more the library is used, the better resources they can offer with the money they get for higher use of their programs and increased traffic.

You let him go, watching him as he got up turning to watch you. You started to move before Chan grabbed ahold of you.

“Where you going?” He said groggily.

“Gonna help make breakfast. You sleep.” You said softly kissing his cheek. You pulled Jisung over a bit letting him cuddle up to Chan before you smirked at Minho.

“See. Now let’s go cook” you said walking towards the kitchen trying not to wake anyone else up.

Minho grabbed a pan before rummaging through the fridge. “Take this and cut it” he said handing you fruit.

He rolled his eyes before starting the eggs, bacon, sausage and other things. You kept asking for anything to help. He had you make some pancakes and set the table as he cooked. As he watched you make the food he couldn’t help but melt. Cooking was something he absolutely loved and sharing it with you made him almost giddy. “Chan” you said softly “hey we’re in the living room, wake up” you said trying to wake him more.

Queer romance recs for the summer

Summer is here and I know many like to read more lighthearted books during that time, so here are some queer romances I've really enjoyed and that I think are perfect for the summer.

Anything by F.T. Lukens. Most specifically, those I've read are So This Is Ever After, In Deeper Waters, and Otherworldly. If you're looking for cute queer romantasy novels to read this summer, look no further. F.T. Lukens' books are fun and lighthearted even when they deal with heavier topics, and they contain mlm, mlnb, and nb rep.

Running Close to the Wind by Alex Rowland. I've talked about this book before and I'll probably talk about it many more times because I adored it. It's hilarious and refreshing even though it handles some heavy topics, so if you like pirates, accidental treason, and dirty jokes, this book is perfect for you. In terms of representation, it has polyamory rep, various sexualities, and intersex (if I remember correctly) and non-binary rep.

Gwen and Art Are Not In Love by Lex Croucher. This book is an adorable, fun romance set in a historical setting inspired by Arthurian times. It's perfect if you're looking for not one but two forbidden romances, banter and adventure, humour, and wlw and mlm rep.

Delilah Green Doesn't Care by Ashley Herring Blake. I remember I absolutely loved this book when I read it during the summer a couple of years ago, and my feelings after two years are still the same. This book is an adult romance novel (with one or two sex scenes) with vivid and complex characters, amazing sapphic rep, and a fantastic romance. Even better, it's a completed trilogy, and though I've yet to read the two other books, I'm sure they're great too.

Carry On by Rainbow Rowell. You've probably already heard of this one, and it is a book I've really enjoyed. Carry On is fun and captivating, and reads easily.

She Gets the Girl by Rachael Lippincott and Alyson Derrick. A cute love story inspired directly from the real-life romance between the authors (who are married, if I'm not mistaken), and a great way to cheer yourself up.

Café con Lychee by Emery Lee. I read this book a couple years ago already, but it was super cute and it read so easily that I finished it in a day. If you're looking for a light-heared, coming-of-age mlm romance, then this is the book for you.

Boyfriend Material by Alexis Hall. Last but not least, one of my favourite books from last year. Boyfriend Material is a hilarious mlm romance that somehow manages to be a light read even though it deals with some dark topics. The characters are amazing, their relationship and how it develops even more so, and this book was an immediate favourite for me. Some people have disliked the sequel, Husband Material, but I loved it just as much, and the third and final book is due to come out some time next year.
