BODIES BODIES BODIES (2022) Grade: C+
It was original enough for an enjoyable watch. Felt like the writing was on the wall as it got closer to the end. The first couple plot turns were fun. Lee Pace is always rememberable in any role.

Bodies bodies bodies (2022) 🍕🍕🍕
GenZ-ers having full-blown petty arguments in the wake of a bunch of murders, with a killer still in their midst, does not help at all with disbelief suspension but this still feels like a fresh gulp of innovation at the intersection of horror-slasher and murder mystery. And after all is said and done, it's entertaining AF.

Bodie Bodies Bodies (2022, dir. Halina Reijn) - review by Rookie-Critic
Tumblr media
Bodies Bodies Bodies centers around Bee (Borat 2's Maria Bakalova) and Sophie (Amandla Stenberg); two young, Gen Z twentysomethings who are going out to meet Sophie's estranged friend group (and Lee Pace), who are gathered at one of their parents' mansions for a "hurricane party." That is absolutely what it sounds like, a party to wait out an oncoming hurricane. Through a series of follies the power goes out and someone dies, leading all of them to try and figure out whodunit.
The film tackles both Gen Z's impersonal way of connecting/reliance on technology as well as affluence and how it affects the culture of people in that generation. I'm normally not one to enjoy or endorse social commentary and satire aimed at putting down the younger generation; it feels very much like punching down and, with all of the massively fucked up and real problems going on in the world right now, the nature of Gen Z "cancel culture" and reliance on technology seem almost trivial and like something that's actually not even an issue in the first place, let alone something worth satirizing. However, you throw the word "affluence" in there, and turn that commentary on its head to be more about how rich people twist these cultural ideologies to their own need and gain to bolster themselves up from dealing with their own issues and vanity, and now we're cooking with gas. Bodies Bodies Bodies does this mostly successfully. Putting Bee, a non-affluent fish-out-of-water character, at the center of the narrative is a smart move, because we get to view these outlandish characters from her layman's point of view, and Maria Bakalova does an absolutely remarkable job in the film. Honestly, the whole cast does a remarkable job. Blending exaggerated personalities with nuance and subtext to create one of the best ensemble casts of the year. Amandla Stenberg, Rachel Sennott, Chase Sui Wonders, Myha'la Herrold, Pete Davidson, and Lee Pace all deserve their own shout outs and incredibly high praise for their performances.
The overarching plot of the film is smartly written, giving these characters space to play around, and the third act reveal is one of the most original I've seen in awhile. Where I think the film falters slightly is that the narrativ has characters act certain ways in certain scenes that maybe don't fit the way they had been characterized up to that point in the film to drive the commentary home more, with a few scenes having the characters just act outright really strange, with no concrete explanation of exactly why or what it means to the larger narrative. I think the film just wants you to assume these moments are due to the characters all being high during the events of the film, but personally I think that could have been done a bit less messy than it was. This is a strong movie that's making a lot of very razor sharp points about its subject matter and themes, and I've been struggling with what score to give it. My opinion since walking out of the theater has gone down, back up, back down, and even as recently as a few hours ago I had settled on a score and am now, as I write this, changing my mind again. It is an unarguably well-made, entertaining, and frankly hilarious film, and the problems, while a little glaring, are not enough to knock it too much. Needless to say, like Inu-Oh, I'm excited for this one to hit streaming/home video, because I think I'll benefit a lot from a rewatch.
Score: 8/10 (this has since been amended to a 9/10)
Currently available to rent or purchase on digital (iTunes, Amazon, Vudu, etc.) and on DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K through Lioinsgate Films.

Movies watched in 2022
Bodies Bodies Bodies (2022, USA)
Director: Halina Reijn
Writer: Sarah DeLappe (based on a story by Kristen Roupenian)
Mini-review:
Well, I can definitely tell why this movie has been so divisive among audiences, but I have to say I loved it. It's not scary at all and there are barely any kills, so those going in expecting an old-school slasher will be disappointed. However, the movie is a fantastic dark comedy/satire that made laugh from beginning to end. The screenplay is very witty and cheeky, but the real reason why it works so well is the perfectly chosen cast. Among them, the standout is clearly Rachel Sennott. I've been obsessed with her ever since I watched Shiva Baby at the start of the year and this film just fueled that obsession further. She's just so naturally funny, every single one of her lines made me laugh out loud cause her delivery is spot-on. To sum up, this is a very fun, tongue-in-cheek movie that I thoroughly enjoyed, even though it's not really much of a horror movie.
