AMERICAN HORROR STORY REACTION

This reaction is for season 11, first episode titled "Something's Coming" which originally aired on October 19, 2022. "Something's Coming" was written by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk and directed by John J. Gray. Spoilers ahead!

Finally! The moment we've been waiting for all year is here! The latest season of American Horror Story debuted last week. This new season of AHS called "NYC" features a mix of old and new. We have AHS alums Billie Lourd, Denis O'Hare, Leslie Grossman, Patti LuPone, Sandra Bernhard, and Zachary Quinto joining some newcomers to the series - broadway actors Joe Mantello (Angels in America) and Isaac Powell (West Side Story) and television actors Russell Tovey (Being Human, Looking) and Charlie Carver (Desperate Housewives, The Leftovers, The Boys in the Band). We also have a new setting - New York City.

Having watched the first two episodes, I have some thoughts as well as some theories about where this season is going. So, let's talk about it!

SOMETHING'S COMING ...

It's very rare I start a new season of American Horror Story not knowing the premise. I think not knowing what to expect is one of the main reasons as to why I thoroughly enjoyed both episodes. Speaking of episodes, let's begin with episode one, "Something's Coming". Without any fanfare, we're dropped right into early-80's New York City - 1981 to be exact. We see a pilot named Captain Ross (Lee Aaron Rosen) and a few flight attendants exit a cab and enter a hotel. While walking to his hotel room, Captain Ross is confronted by one of his coworkers, Tawny (Kelsey Lea Jones), and she comes on to him like gangbusters. Captain Ross flashes his wedding band and tells her thanks but no thanks and proceeds on to his hotel room where he proceeds to shower and dress in his finest leather gear.

Captain Ross makes his way to a sketchy part of town and goes into a seemingly abandoned warehouse where men in various states of undress are hooking up in darkened passages. The last time we see the captain alive on screen is when we see him being watched by a muscular, masked man dressed in head to toe leather. The next thing we see is a headless body by the river. The NYPD, including a cop by the name of Patrick Read (Russell Tovey), are on the scene investigating. And if I didn't already know we were back in the 1980's, then it was made abundantly clear the moment one of the cops made a derogatory joke about the victim who is presumed gay. It's a harsh reminder that even though this scene is taking place over 40 years ago, homophobia is still an issue in 2022.

To make matters even more bleak, we head over to Fire Island where a scientist and doctor by the name of Hannah Wells (Billie Lourd) is investigating a new virus that is threatening to wipe out the deer population on the island. Hannah suggests killing off the remaining deer before the virus has a chance to jump to humans. With this being 1981, I have a sneaking suspicion what this new virus could be.

We learn that Patrick is gay and is living with his older partner, Gino Barelli (Joe Mantello). The two appear to be polar opposites. Patrick used to be married and is now living as a gay man, though he is closeted at work for obvious reasons. Gino is an openly gay and works as a journalist for a newspaper called 'The Native' which reports on issues concerning the gay community. They both have different approaches when it comes to the string of murders involving local gay men. While Patrick is content to quietly investigate, Gino wants to use the newspaper to shine a huge spotlight on the issue. There's obviously some tension between these two but they do seem to genuinely care about each other.

We then meet Adam Carpenter (Charlie Carver), a young gay man currently in the middle of a breakup. His friend and roommate, Sully (Jared Reinfeldt) attempts to cheer him up by taking him to a cruising spot in the park. What I like most about Adam is his innocence which is a striking contrast to many of the characters we are introduced to in this episode. He's a romantic at heart and isn't really interested in anonymous hookups.

Adam is left alone after Sully goes off to hookup with a total stranger and that is when he sees the same muscular, masked man in the leather get-up we saw earlier in the episode. He runs away calling after Sully. Sully goes after him and is confronted by the mysterious, possibly murderous leather daddy. We hear him scream and that is the last we ever see of Sully.

Adam reports Sully's disappearance to Patrick at the police department. Adam thinks that Patrick doesn't want to help him but Patrick assures him that he does care about the situation and he does want to help but he can't and it's not because Sully is gay, it's because he hasn't been missing for more than 48 hours. He tells Adam to come back if Sully hasn't turned up in a couple of days and Adam leaves the station.

Patrick then goes to talk to the captain, Mac Marzara (Kal Penn) about Sully and all of the recent murders but gets nowhere. I do find it interesting that we have a POC character in a position of power who could honestly give a shit that a bunch of homosexuals are being murdered. I imagine it couldn't have been easy for him to get to the position he is currently in, yet he seems intent on shitting on an entire community instead of trying to do right by them. P.S. - I love Kal Penn as an actor and as a person but the character he is playing in American Horror Story: NYC is a garbage human and I hope we get to see his comeuppance by the end of the season.

We then head over to Neptune Baths Health Club where the resident chanteuse Kathy Pizzaz (Patti LuPone) is performing "Fever" by Peggy Lee. Adam arrives and takes a seat at the bar. He notices a black and white photo of the same leather man ran into at the park and asks the bartender if he knows who the guy is. The bartender says he doesn't know who the man is but he knows who took the photograph. He points out Theo Graves (Isaac Powell) who appears to be pretty popular amongst the clientele.

At the other end of the bar, Gino overhears the conversation with Adam and the bartender. He beckons him over and introduces himself. Gino tells Adam that the police won't help him but he will. He gives Adam his contact information. Adam goes to Theo's studio the following day and learns the identity of the masked man he saw in the park as well as in the photograph he saw in the bathhouse. Adam tells Theo that he thinks the same guy is hurting people and gives him his number to call if he finds out any more information on him. Theo rushes Adam out of the studio just in time for Sam (Zachary Quinto) to arrive.

Sam is Theo's manager and boyfriend and it only took one line (no pun intended) for me to know this guy is bad news. Sam is every besuited businessman snorting coke off the coffee table we've ever encountered in an 80's movie and he and Theo have a really effed up romance. Sam accuses Theo of using him for his money and is trying to pressure him into going the porn route while Theo is content with the type of photography he is currently doing. Theo also senses that something dark is coming, which is where we first hear the title of the episode, but Sam seems unconcerned. Meanwhile, Patrick asks Gino about the significance of a blue handkerchief (a blue handkerchief was stuffed in the mouth of the severed head found earlier in the episode) and Gino tells him about the hanky code, a way for gay men to communicate their sexual interests. Patrick then tells Gino he is not authorized to investigate the recent murders and that he has to be careful about leaking information. He asks Gino to go to The Brownstone Bar on his behalf to gather information.

Patrick meets with his soon-to-be ex-wife named Barbara (Leslie Grossman) and presents her with divorce papers. The two of them have a pretty decent relationship considering the circumstances behind their relationship coming to an end. I also get the sense that Barbara is being as suportive as she can regarding Patrick being gay. She asks him why he married her and his answer seems genuine. Patrick, like so many gay men of his ilk, wanted to have the wife and family but ultimately he couldn't make it work. He tells her that he still loves her. It's a bittersweet scene but ultimately both of them seem better off apart than together.

Gino heads over to the bar and chats with a regular named Henry (Denis O'Hare). Henry refuses to go on the record for Gino but he does give him a valuable piece of information: all of the serial killer's victims drink Mai Tais. When Gino goes to leave, he realizes he's been drugged. As he stumbles out of the bar, he is ushered into a car by a strange man.

Sam is also at the Brownstone Bar and he's talking with an up and coming actor named Freddy (John Bubniak), arranging for him to be photographed by Theo as a means of garnering him exposure. Freddy arrives at Theo's studio and what starts as a homoerotic photoshoot turns into something a bit more scandalous when Sam flips over a wooden stool and asks him to sit on it. Freddy does follow through and Sam is pleased with the photos. When Freddy leaves, Theo asks Sam about Big Daddy. Sam gets upset and tells Theo that Big Daddy is dead. It should be noted that Big Daddy was standing outside of Theo's studio and that Sam seemingly acknowledges his presence.

Adam meets up with Theo at the bathhouse and tells him about Big Daddy. Adam is perplexed because the person he saw in the photo is the same person he saw at the park the night Sully disappeared. Theo lives to go hook up and Adam is propositioned by Freddy. Adam declines his offer for sex and Freddy heads off to the steam room where he runs into Big Daddy. We end the episode the way we started with a very bleak scene and a sign of things to come. We find ourselves back on Fire Island with Dr. Hannah Wells as she watches a group of infected deer get slaughtered by the police. It's a harsh reminder of the storm that's about to come in the form of the AIDS epidemic.

I'm gonna pause my reaction here and do my reaction to episode two in another post. This first episode feels very different from previous first episodes of American Horror Story. The characters, whether you loved them or hated them, felt really grounded. I really like Gino and a lot of that is due to Joe Mantello's acting. I also like Adam who reminds me a lot of myself in my earlier years. It's fun to see Leslie Grossman play someone so understated this season and I wonder how Barbara will be used in future episodes. The only character I dislike and it has nothing to do with the actor is Sam. Sam is a sleeze ball and I wonder what dark secrets he's hiding. The only character I'm truly on the fence about is Patrick. Patrick is giving me John Lowe (Wes Bentley) in "Hotel" vibes. I get the feeling he's a troubled individual but is he a bad guy? Cops, historically, on this show have turned out to be bad guys.

As for the episode itself - it felt surprisingly restrained in a way I'm not really used to with American Horror Story. As an avid fan of the show, I can also be one of its biggest critics. I've been a fan of Ryan Murphy since Popular and I have no problem admitting that while he swings big when it comes to film and television, he has just as many misses as hits. The same can be said about this show. Many would argue the show has lost the magic of the original seasons, but I think this episode is a promise of that magic returning. We're off to a great start. I just hope the writers can stick the landing at the end.

Seeing all the posts about ideas for an animated adaptation got me thinking about this again...

TUC is such a dark series that even when I first read it as a 12-year-old in 2010 and daydreamed about my perfect animated TUC movie I would imagine it being at least FSK 16 (sort of the German equivalent to R or NC-17). Many things you can put into books for kids without issue are going to be “too much” when visualized on screen—and I don't think TUC would gain anything from being sanitized (beyond making some injuries and deaths less graphic/gross).

So, while I wouldn't mind bright colors, artistic experiments, or out-there character designs, I always thought TUC would be best served with a style that features more realistic proportions and details than you see in many of the currently popular western animated shows.

Whenever I imagined an animated series or movie, I thought of something that looked something like these:

Some of these are more gritty and some more experimental but I think together they make an okay moodboard of sorts for my preferred art style for an animated TUC adaptation.

NOTES: Beautiful HD capture of one of the Final Dress Rehearsals. Top notch production and thrilling performances from Alice, Keaton, and the whole cast! This is quite a unique capture since it was the first time the blood was dropped. Too many amazing things to point out here, don't miss this one!!! A+ Well filmed with a nice mix of close-ups and full stage shots and no obstructions. Based on the revised Off-Broadway version, and presented at the Balagan Theatre. Because this was recorded at the final run-through prior to opening night, there are a few “holds” as they worked out any kinks: * After “Evening Prayers” there is a hold to change all microphone batteries, resulting in most of the song being run a second time (the sound check was removed and put as a bonus at the end of act two). * During the scene where Carrie is getting ready for the prom a microphone made a "farting" noise and Alice grabbed her butt and said "sorry" which made the cast and tech crew laugh.

This has been incorrectly labelled as an authorized production,which is incorrect - this was an unauthorized production (e.g., no rights were secured before the production), though Gore (and Cohen) were in the audience of this performance and chose not to sue Jeff Murphy and Stagedoor over copyright infringement, partly because Gore said he had always wanted to see the show done with actual teenagers (reported by Jeff Murphy, the director).

NOTES: As far as I know, the first ever video of the Toronto production! I had the entire show in VOB format ready to post but, unfortunately, I lost the USB it was on in the middle of an airport. Luckily I was able to salvage all but thirty minutes of the original footage, so all that's lost is part of the scene after "I Am Here" and a portion of "Somewhere In The Middle Of Nowhere". If you find a USB the size of a thumbnail around Pearson, it's a $5 reward! A flu passed around the cast that they were all just recovering from, and at one point you can see Bev take a tissue out of her pilot's jacket and blow her nose. It explains the large number of understudies on, particularly of interest is that of the role of Hannah being played by a Caucasian actress, which causes her absence for the bus scene and leads to a severely different dynamic I'd not seen the character played as before.

How the coronavirus is forever changing the way MLB connects to fans

IT BEGAN WITH the hype video that was supposed to introduce the 2020 Los Angeles Dodgers on Opening Day. Organist Dieter Ruehle followed by playing the national anthem and "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" from his home piano. Third baseman Justin Turner, closer Kenley Jansen and manager Dave Roberts shared updates on their suddenly monotonous lives. Comedian George Lopez cracked jokes at the Houston Astros' expense and country musician Brad Paisley wore a Dodgers sweatshirt that described the team as "2017 World Series Champs."

Along the way, the Dodgers' first live Zoom event provided its fair share of predictable glitches -- ringing cellphones, awkward silences and buffering videos, one of which distorted an uplifting message from Vin Scully. Joe Davis, the Dodgers' play-by-play voice pressed into virtual hosting duty, cringed through some of the technical difficulties. He thought social media would be as unforgiving as usual. He was wrong.

"The people appreciated whatever we were able to do, even if the video was skipping a little bit, or there were audio issues, or somebody dropped out at some point," Davis said. "The general sense was that it was like, 'So what?' There was an appreciation, it seems like, from the fans that there was something baseball-related to be able to cling onto and distract them for a night."

The Dodgers initially planned to host 1,000 fans at their first "Zoom Party" on April 27. They ultimately opened it up to 11,000 people. Over the next couple of weeks, the guest list increased to 12,000 and then 15,000, proving two key points about this unimaginable period: Teams are trying anything and everything to fill a massive void amid the coronavirus pandemic, and their fans are here for it -- a dynamic that could change the fan-engagement experience forever.

There have been re-airings of old postseason games, broadcaster calls of home movies, training tips from coaches, bedtime stories from players and bracket-style tournaments for items such as jerseys and bobbleheads, all in an effort to create content in a time when baseball's main content pipeline -- live games -- is shut off.

Ryan Zimmerman interviewed Dr. Anthony Fauci, a diehard fan of the Washington Nationals. Miami Marlins catcher Francisco Cervelli taught viewers how to make focaccia. Kansas City Royals director of behavioral science Ryan Maid hosted "Mindfulness Mondays" to provide tips on living in the moment. The Cleveland Indians offered instructions for creating games out of items in one's sock drawer. And former Astros infielder Geoff Blum hosted a series called "Feel Good Stories For The Heart" in hopes of providing some much-needed positivity.

Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association also teamed up to create an MLB The Show Players League, where big leaguers went head-to-head in video game matchups that were livestreamed on Twitch and broadcast on television during the virtual playoffs, culminating in a final showdown between Tampa Bay Rays ace Blake Snell and Chicago White Sox ace Lucas Giolito that aired on ESPN.

"We want to give everybody sort of a relief from what's going on, and if we can help them and we can entertain them, we've succeeded," Dodgers chief marketing officer Lon Rosen said of his own team's strategy. "We're in a really difficult time right now. We all feel like we're gonna come out the other end and life will come back to some normalcy, but until then, we wanna make sure that we're connected to our fans and our fans are connected to us. And that's our mission."

In pursuit of that, the Dodgers arranged for their director of player performance, Brandon McDaniel, to guide fans through in-home workoutstwice a week. They handed a smartphone to Ellen Kershaw so that she could record her husband, Clayton, flipping pancakes and playing Pop-A-Shot. And they utilized Ross Stripling, their agreeable right-handed pitcher, for an interview series with some of his teammates. Davis himself has hosted his own cooking show and also started a podcast with his broadcast partner, Orel Hershiser. The response floored him.

"We've had multiple people tell us that it brought them to tears to hear us, multiple people tell us that it's the best part of their week when that comes out, and their favorite thing during the quarantine," Davis said of the podcast, called "Off Air." "Man, we're just trying to have a fun conversation. We started it realizing the void that everybody was feeling with no baseball, but I don't think we fully appreciated how big that void was."

MARCO GONZALES LEFT Arizona shortly after MLB effectively closed spring training complexes on March 15. He hopped in the car with his wife and their dog and drove 1,400 miles to his home near T-Mobile Park, returning to Seattle -- the country's first coronavirus epicenter -- for the first time in more than a month.

Gonzales, the left-hander announced as the Seattle Mariners' Opening Day starter less than a week earlier, was struck by how a bustling city could feel so desolate. Parks were empty, traffic was nonexistent, stores had shuttered, and the few people he saw, usually at the local supermarket, dressed as if they were "going into surgery." The anxiety was palpable, omnipresent, and it helped spur Gonzales into action. He donated blood, partnered with a local hunger-relief agency and stepped outside of his comfort zone to help entertain a populace desperate for levity.

The latter morphed into a weekly interview podcast called "Inside Corner," which Gonzales co-hosts alongside Mariners broadcaster Aaron Goldsmith through the team's YouTube channel. Catcher Tom Murphy and fellow starters Taijuan Walker and Justin Dunn have made up the first three guests. Murphy spoke from his dining room, which features a 400-pound black bear he snagged on a hunting trip. Dunn, now 6-foot-2, revealed he was shorter than his 4-foot-11 grandmother when he entered high school. Walker estimated owning 400 pairs of sneakers.

"I miss baseball, I miss that interaction with my teammates," Gonzales said. "And I think the goal of this, ultimately, is for fans to get to know us a little bit better away from the field, and to feel like they're a little more connected to us."

It's part of an ironic twist in all this -- a time that is keeping fans from baseball is also allowing them, in some respects, to feel more connected to those who play it. During the season, their time is precious. During the offseason, their time is sacred. But now athletes are stuck at home waiting this out, with unkempt hair and a dwindling supply of toilet paper, just like the rest of us. To pass the time, many have offered rare glimpses into their personal lives and have seemingly become more willing to reveal their true personalities. Gonzales has acted as a willing tour guide.

"The guys that I've dealt with, they want people to get to know them as people," Gonzales said. "Because a lot of times when we're on the field, we're in a mindset, we're in a mentality, that is rare to us as a person. We're in a competitive, testosterone-driven mindset, whereas right now, when we're stuck at home, and we have a chance to talk to each other, it's a lot different communication. And I think that people will hopefully see that."

Kevin Martinez has been overseeing the Mariners' marketing efforts for the past quarter-century. Four days after MLB suspended its season, Martinez led a meeting that served as a brainstorming session for how the team could pivot in its content strategy and fill an unprecedented void in a reeling city. Martinez saw it as "an opportunity to innovate and think differently."

It led to a hype video of home movies, a series of tutorials from Mariners coaches, an MLB The Show tournament pitting fans against players, and Gonzales' podcast.

"Seattle has been one of the most affected by this, and one of the first for sure," Gonzales said. "We're trying to get behind the notion that we'll be one of the first to overcome it and really show the rest of the country what it looks like. Right now, all we can do is try to fill everybody up with some optimism, put some good content out there, and try to just give people that hope that we're gonna get back to normal as soon as we can."

BY NATURE OF their status in local communities, sports teams can often serve as information hubs for regions. The Boston Red Sox, for example, represent the baseball team for all six states in the New England region, making Twitter -- where the team has more than 6.1 million followers -- an ideal platform to distribute factually verified information regarding the pandemic. Kelsey Doherty, senior manager of digital media for the Red Sox, says the team has kept in touch with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and the State House to stay up to date on the best official safety measures.

"It's a little nerve-wracking every time I put out any of that messaging, because especially early on, things were changing so rapidly about what was or wasn't good for you or how you're supposed to go about things," Doherty said. "We were linking a lot to the Mass Department of Public Health, but we're also trying to put the Red Sox spin on it. This weekend we put out, 'How far is 6 feet really?' And it's like, 'It's one Rafael Devers away.'"

The Red Sox are far from the only team to use its social media accounts to pitch in. Zimmerman's interview with Fauci, via the Nats' Facebook page, delved into plans for slowly and safely restarting the economy. The Colorado Rockies are one club that sponsored a mask-making project, reaching out online to distribute free team-branded masks to front-line workers. New York Yankeesfirst baseman Luke Voit connected with medical staff at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. The Baltimore Orioles have been holding Phone Call Fridays, when members of the team check in on fans and first responders.

There have been other notable effects. With no games on the calendar for the near future, each team's social media account now represents the primary connection clubs have with fans on a daily basis. Typically at this point in the regular season, an internationally iconic team like the Yankees is focused on building hype around the club, selling individual game tickets and targeting tourists who might be coming into New York. Stephi Blank, senior manager of digital and social strategy for the Yankees, says the pandemic has flipped the team's social focus upside down.

"Especially when thinking about targeting individual game ticket buyers, tourism in New York City is something that is a massive industry, and talking with our colleagues at Broadway and others, you see that so much of the individual game, the individual ticket buyers, come from people who are outside of New York who don't live there," Blank said. "That had been a big focus of ours prior to this, but New York has been the epicenter, and we've been focusing a lot more on our local fans."

With no team to root for or games to play, teams are reframing their social media presence to think about fandom as a lifestyle.

"It's new territory," Doherty said. "I always joke that I am so grateful that I work in sports because our content can change day to day based on a win or a loss or who had a big night, and now suddenly I'm in this uncharted territory and everyone in sports is, where it's like suddenly we aren't dependent on that and we're dependent on our history, the lifestyle, the fan base and the culture around the team."

THE LACK OF day-to-day, game-centric content leaves more room to experiment. The Yankees have dabbled in more player personality-driven content, posting intentionally lo-fi workout videos from the likes of Giancarlo Stanton and Luis Severino, shot in vertical video on an iPhone. Yankees head of communications Jason Zillo says the lack of wins and losses allowed baseball's most traditional brand to let loose and have some fun.

"[Player-personality content] is not only a neat concept, but I think this has legs to live long beyond the pandemic," Zillo said. "The thing that constantly is a push and a pull during a baseball season is that games matter so much. And you have to temper 'fun' things up against the fact that every day, there's a game that you're trying to win at all costs. There has to be a measure of caution. If you've lost six of eight games, my first mindset isn't, 'Let's do something fun.' It's like, 'Let's kind of scale back and then when we've won six of eight, then maybe we can push more of the fun stuff.'"

Baseball is unique among sports in its challenge of creating inclusive, compelling social media content. The schedule is arduous -- nearly every single day, often for about 10 hours, from the middle of February until at least the end of September -- and the culture can often feel repressive. Marketers have mostly found players to be less motivated to promote themselves, both because of the volume of their workload and the guaranteed nature of their contracts. Teams, in some respects, have taken a relatively conservative approach on their digital platforms.

But maybe that'll be different now.

"It has been a challenging time," Martinez, the Mariners' senior VP of marketing, said, "but it's been a time for innovation, and a great opportunity to create fans with our players in ways we haven't explored before."

While baseball has been slow to adapt to the new age of social media, the pandemic plopped a mirror in front of many teams. Many took that as an opportunity to try something new -- and have seen it bear fruit.

"You hear a lot of people from a lot of different walks of life saying, 'Use this time to get better at something,'" Zillo said. "I think baseball, as a whole, has, when it comes to looking under different rocks, now is really using social media and all of its tentacles to reach as many fans as possible."

It's finally here—the day we've all been waiting for ever since the “Moonlight”/ “La La Land” Best Picture fiasco: the Oscar noms have been announced. It's been a tight race, in which “Three Billboards” appears to have established itself as the frontrunner for Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, and maybe even Best Picture, while “The Shape of Water” has proven a nomination favorite this awards season but not necessarily the most likely to win. It leads this year's Oscars with 13 nominations.

In more exciting news, “Get Out” scored noms for Jordan Peele for Best Directing, Picture, and Writing, making him only the third director ever to receive all three noms on a debut feature. Daniel Kaluuya also scored a Best Actor nomination for the film.

Greta Gerwig, too, did well for herself, earning noms for Best Directing and Writing, and “Lady Bird” also has been nominated for Best Picture, though since Gerwig isn't a producer on the film she can't technically claim the same record as Peele.

“Call Me By Your Name” was nominated for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Actor for Timothée Chalamet. Also notable is that “A Fantastic Woman,” the Chilean film starring trans actress Daniela Vega, was nominated for Best Foreign Film.

The Oscars are hosted this year by Jimmy Kimmel and take place March 4 on ABC. Take a look at the full list below:

Lost in Society by Deanna Chapman The first time I heard Lost In Society, I knew I’d be listening to them again. There aren’t too many current punk bands that I really get into, but this trio is good. “Creature” is the first song that they’ve released from their upcoming EP, Eager Hearts, which is due out on May 25th. They’re a band that you won’t want to miss out on. I can’t wait to hear the EP in full. Recommended Track: “Creature” RIYL: The Menzingers, Green Day, Hot Water Music Tape Waves by Jason Tate Tape Waves have this laid back breathy vibe that I find the perfect compliment to cold nights. These are songs with vocals that blend into their surroundings and feel light and airy but with an ominously haunted texture. The band released Here to Fade in 2016 and are gearing up to release their new album, Distant Light, on June 6th. Recommended Track: Nowhere RIYL: Field Mouse, Day Wave, Copeland Courtney Marie Andrews by Craig Manning If you read Chorus.fm, you probably know Courtney Marie Andrews best as the female backing vocalist on Jimmy Eat World’s Invented. In the years since, though, Courtney has been gradually garnering attention for her own music, culminating with the release of her latest album, May Your Kindness Remain, earlier this year. It’s a remarkably well-sung LP, giving ample showcase to Courtney’s big, empathetic voice. From the gospel-laced title track to the Counting Crows-esque “Kindness of Strangers,” the album feels like a vintage folk classic from first listen. Sneak Kindness into a stack of records between Carole King and Joni Mitchell and you can probably fool people into thinking it’s a forgotten gem from 1971. Recommended Track: “May Your Kindness Remain” RIYL: Joni Mitchell, Carole King, First Aid Kit Madeline Rosene by Anna Acosta In the current climate (musical, political, or otherwise) a bit of levity can go a long way. LA based singer-songwriter Madeline Rosene’s acerbic wit and honest storytelling takes everyday situations and tales and translates them to song in the most delightful way imaginable – this listener challenges anyone listening to hear “Drunk Text” not to cringe in lighthearted shared embarrassment over the predicament posed – such the better if you get a chance to see it live. Rosene is a refreshing change of pace: the music is relatable and approachable in all the right ways. Expect to see more from this songwriter in the coming months, and check out her new music video in the meantime. Recommended Track: “Drunk Text” RIYL: Pink, Sizzy Rocket, The Summer Set Hooded Menace by Jake Jenkins Hailing from Finland, Hooded Menace perfectly and precisely blend the genres of death metal and doom metal with such force it threatens to knock you off your feet. Their latest effort, this year’s Ossuarium Silhouettes Unhallowed, is the strongest offering of their career. Further expanding their sound to incorporate tinges of post and sludge metal, Hooded Menace create massive, walloping songs that pack a huge punch in all the right places. The riffs are technical but not overtly so, the pacing of the album never leaves a dull moment, and they switch from death metal riffage to doom metal dread effortlessly, often blending the two in a smear of thick guitars and heavy distortion. They came out swinging early on in the year with the best album the genre has to offer so far; as such the rest of the metal world has a lot to live up to with Ossuarium Silhouettes Unhallowed. Recommended Track: “Cascades of Ash” RIYL: Spectral Voice, Gatecreeper Amy Shark by Jason Tate Amy Shark has found some early internet buzz with her song “Adore,” but from what I’ve heard of her upcoming debut album, Love Monster, she’s got the chops to write songs that could make her a household name. They’re the kinda songs that feel perfectly suited to find their way into a scene in the latest hit TV show while also sliding into an infectious summer playlist. Recommended Track: “I Said Hi” RIYL: Vera Blue, Broods Illuminati Hotties by Drew Beringer Sure, the first thing you might notice about Sarah Tudzin’s band is the wild band name Illuminati Hotties. But once you hear how incredibly infectious the music, you’ll understand that only a wild moniker like Illuminati Hotties is suitable. Releasing their debut album, Kiss Yr Frenemies, this spring via Tiny Engines (the most eclectic indie label alive in 2018), Illuminati Hotties offer cutting takes on debt, anxiety, and relationships beneath chipper bops and fuzzed-out dissonant rock in the vein of Mitski. So yeah, the name is a little goofy but Tudzin has the charisma and more importantly the songs to back it all up – underneath these breezy anthems is a lot of simmering growing pains and real talk. So don’t sleep on Illuminati Hotties because Frenemies has the potential to be one of the very best albums released out of Tiny Engines’ storied discography. Recommended Track: “Cuff” Kraus by Aaron Mook Kraus is a bedroom project, which is impressive for a number of reasons – the first of which being the project’s production quality. His most recent album, this year’s curious Path, is abrasive, but in a way that sounds meticulous and intentional. The project seems equally as smooth when it wants, as if somebody threw Sigur Ros and Deftones into a blender with a few pedalboards for good measure. At its most expansive, the songs of Path sound as though the world around them is burning down, paired with breathy vocals just above a whisper and only occasionally soothed by cool, ocean-like reprieves. Whichever path the project takes, it’s clear that sole songwriter Will Kraus has a completed vision for each new prickly shoegaze release under his name. Recommended Track: “Bum” Now, Now by Jason Tate Now, Now have been around for a while now and we’ve posted about them for years. However, it’s been six years since they last released an album and their new album, Saved, almost feels like an entirely new band. It’s also one of the best albums I’ve heard this year. It’s incredible. So, for that reason I think it’s more than fair to call attention to them once again and make sure they’re on your radar. If, for whatever reason, you’ve been sleeping on this band, you’ve got time to go check out their spectacular back catalog. And if you’re already a fan, it’s time to start getting very excited for their new album. The album combines smooth pop-melodies with hauntingly personal introspection. The songs explore growing up, mid-adulthood, sexuality, and mix the ridiculously catchy with various forms of electronic experimentation. This combination of heartbreakingly sad and poignant moments over catchy music reminds me so many times of Jim Adkins and Jimmy Eat World. There’s just something about simple words telling grand stories that that draws me in. Recommended Track: “SGL” RIYL: Tegan and Sara, Paramore, Jimmy Eat World City Calm Down by Mary Varvaris Australian 4-piece City Calm Down are here with their stellar sophomore album Echoes In Blue, which opens with the soaring, heartbreaking “Joan, I’m Disappearing”, where vocalist Jack Bourke laments lost love and is immediately captivating. City Calm Down then turns up the dial with the spectacular “In This Modern Land”. The band employs horns, and the light use of synths complement Bourke’s rich baritone voice. Album highlight “Distraction/Losing Sleep” follows, and is easily my favourite track. Drummer Lee Armstrong takes things up a notch, and the warm guitar tone creates striking, melancholy melody. “Distraction/Losing Sleep” is incredibly relatable, as Bourke joins the rest of us adults who are “bored to death and only 29”. Echoes In Blue seems top-heavy upon early listens, but with time, songs like the gorgeous, Trouble Will Find Me-lite “Kingdom” grow on you. “Kingdom” is the perfect indie rock song. Bourke continues to tell stories we all connect to, crying, “you said I should have opened my eyes / I was terrified of what I might find”. Triumphant, massive single “Blood” follows, and while it’s a very catchy song, it falls on the too repetitive side. But, where the album has small weak spots such as blending together and some songs being too repetitive, it certainly ends on a high. Album closer “Echoes In Blue” is eerie, strange and dramatic. The song slowly builds, beginning with creepy electronics, then introducing gentle keys as Bourke serenades us. Electronic drums and double tracked vocals lift the song even more in the second verse. “Echoes In Blue” is a mournful note to end on, with Bourke defeated, weak and grieving; “all I hope is that you will make it through the night / better that you’re leaving now / you’re better in the light”. The title track is the most experimental song here, and an incredibly strong album closer. I look forward to where City Calm Down go next – this is an album that sees a band who have hit their stride already, and they’re booming with confidence. Recommended Track: “Echoes in Blue” RIYL: The National, Joy Division, The Cure Ashley McBryde by Craig Manning What’s the best way to start a record? Most artists go for something big, barnstorming, and catchy. The opener is the “don’t bore us; get to the chorus” of the album format. If you don’t grab listeners right away, you are going to lose them. But one of the things that makes Ashley McBryde’s debut LP Girl Going Nowhere such a magnetic listen is that she trusts her fans to be patient. Make no mistake: McBryde is perfectly capable of writing big singalong hooks. Her first album is full of them, from the fittingly titled “Radioland” to the lovelorn “American Scandal.” On the album’s first song and title track, though, McBryde strips things down. More than half of the song is just her voice and an acoustic guitar, and it cuts through you like a heartbreak song can cut through a half-empty bar at 1:00 a.m. It’s a song about chasing your dreams, even when everyone tells you that you’re going to fall on your face. And it’s a song about how good it feels to prove the naysayers wrong. “I hear the crowd, I look around/And I can’t find an empty chair,” McBryde sings in the chorus. “Not bad for a girl going nowhere.” It’s a perfect opener not only because of its patience and restraint, but also because it makes you feel like you’ve been rooting for McBryde’s underdog story for years. Not many artists can fool you into thinking you’ve been listening to them for 15 years when you’ve only been listening to them for 15 seconds. Recommended Track: “Girl Going Nowhere” RIYL: Miranda Lambert, Janis Joplin, Lydia Loveless The Longshot by Adam Grundy The Longshot are a 4-piece punk band fronted by Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong. On their debut LP Love is for Losers, Billie Joe has crafted an easy to digest 70’s pop-punk sound with polished production. Recommended Track: “Chasing a Ghost” RIYL: Foxboro Hottubs, The Ataris, Against Me! Lucy Dacus by Trevor Graham Lucy Dacus is a treasure. She’s been making waves in the indie rock pool since her debut release on Matador in 2016 — a deceptively weighty beacon of warm, southern-tinged charm that might have you think she’d already been in the game for years. Her eagerly anticipated sophomore effort, Historian, is an expansive, powerful exhibit of a multifaceted twenty-something with a heart fixed to leave a mark on yours. Revealing a more refined textural template to paint herself into, Lucy explores themes of passionate rebellion, the tenderness of heartbreak, the struggles of creativity, and the unexpected catharsis in confronting mortality. And while even the most somber melodies often drip from her mouth like honey, the sweetness in delivery never detracts from the emotional sincerity permeating every line. The musical backdrops notably accentuate this notion at every turn, as Lucy’s masterful songwriting ensures her lyrics a home that match their intensity at any level. As a result, we have playful string arrangements, crushing distorted climaxes, spacious ambient stillness, and straightforward indie pop songs all occupying the same space. Lead single “Addictions” is claimed by the latter of those categories, as a bubbly track about repeating mistakes and owning up to it — but not before declaring the blame to be shared. Toss this one on on a sunny afternoon and take the ride. Recommended Track: “Addictions” RIYL: Angel Olsen, Margaret Glaspy, Laura Stevenson Not on Tour by Jason Tate Not on Tour have a sound that harkens back to the day when pop-punk bands played as fast as they could and let the melodies try and catch up with the instrumentation. None of the songs on their last album, Bad Habits, crack two minutes, but they’re full of hooks, guitar riffs, and a sound that makes me think about summers spent on skateboards. Recommended Track: “Write it Down” RIYL: Mute, A Wilhelm Scream, Lagwagon Jon Latham by Craig Manning Listening to Jon Latham’s music is like being hypnotized. Most of his songs are lengthy slow-burners. On his 2017 LP Lifers, there are only eight songs, but five of them go on for more than five minutes. Where less talented songwriters really make you feel the runtime of those longer songs, though, Latham makes them go down like a shot of the smoothest whiskey you’ve ever tasted. His songs are potent and emotionally hard-hitting, but there’s also something intensely comforting about them. Lifers plays like a long and lonely road trip through heartland America. Songs like “Learning Now” and “Tennessee Dime” seem to stretch on for miles, as far as the highway shooting out of sight. But Latham’s talents coalesce most clearly on “Yearbook Signatures,” a track about how the right song can bring back people who exited your life so long ago you almost forgot about them. Pour yourself a drink, play the song loud, and take a trip back to your past. Recommended Track: “Yearbook Signatures” RIYL: John Moreland, Noah Gundersen, Tom Petty The Aces by Adam Grundy The Aces are an 4-piece all-female band from Provo, Utah with a sound that immediately grabs your ears and attention. On their debut album, When My Heart Felt Volcanic, they showcase incredible musicianship with pop sensibilities. These steady climbers have toured with COIN and X Ambassadors and are making a name ofor themselves faster than the hooks can hit you. Recommended Track: “Volcanic Love” RIYL: The 1975, HAIM, Paramore POP, ETC. by Jason Tate POP, ETC. have been making music under this moniker since around 2012. Most recently they’ve been releasing what they call “infinite singles” and just putting music out when the inspiration strikes. These songs continue the tradition of the ridiculously well-crafted pop-rock music the band explored on 2016’s Souvenir. This is the kind of rock-tinged-pop-music that I wish we saw more of these days. It’s well-crafted and catchy, but there’s also a weight behind the songs. Recommended Track: “Your Heart is a Weapon” RIYL: Ra Ra Riot, Coin, Bad Suns LANCO by Craig Manning As a fan of “high-brow” country music by the likes of Jason Isbell and Sturgill Simpson, I think I’m supposed to roll my eyes at LANCO. That’s certainly what the country purists would do. But I can’t, because LANCO writes the kind of hooks that send wrecking balls through my cynical defenses. I tend to think of this band as the Boys Like Girls of modern country music. Just like Boys Like Girls, LANCO write verses and pre-choruses that are catchier than most bands’ choruses. And just like Boys Like Girls, LANCO have the innate ability to conjure up the spirit and freedom of a perfect summer night. It says something that “So Long (I Do)” is my single most-played song of the year so far when it’s not even summer yet. If you crafted a pop-country song in a laboratory, I’m pretty convinced you couldn’t come up with something as flawlessly catchy as that one. No wonder a few LANCO songs popped up on Taylor Swift’s most recent Spotify playlist. If anyone knows great pop-country, it’s Taylor.
