Inspirisles

This time in my regular TTRPG reading I picked up Inspirisles by Hatchling Games. It's a wonderful fantasy game about the descendants of King Arthur, dragons, and magic!

Inspirisles is also rather unique as it aims to introduce you to either American or British sign language through play, and comes with videos and handouts to learn basic sign, and sections throughout the book on Deaf culture.

Hatchling Games originally gave me a review pdf to look at the game (thank you!!), but i have since gone out and bought the physical version because its so pretty!

Can Tulip speak? I love her (and Kian and his dads!) Love the AU and your art!

Tulip can't speak vocally (her noises are mostly croaking/squeaking/screaming etc. Your normal assorted amphibian noises) but she and Kian (and subsequently Hob) are learning how to sign! It's both very endearing and mildly alarming and made only marginally more difficult by the fact that Tulip doesn't have an actual chin. 💕

Speakers of non-English languages of the UK and Ireland wanted!!

Since it’s World Mother Language Day today (February the 21st), I’m thinking of doing a series of posts on the native non-English languages of the United Kingdom and Ireland, with some information and short interviews. 

For this, I am looking for both native speakers/signers and learners (with or without parentage/heritage of the language in question) of the following languages:

- Scottish Gaelic

- Irish

- Welsh

- Any sign language of the United Kingdom or Ireland (e.g. BSL)

- Any other minority language indigenous to the United Kingdom or Ireland. By this I mean primarily spoken only within the UK or Ireland as a minority, or spoken very little elsewhere. For example: Cornish, Manx, Shelta, or Anglo-Romani, not languages like Polish or Bengali that are minority within the UK but have a significant speaker base elsewhere. (I am aware that I am fishing for some of these *cough* Cornish *cough*...but you never know!)

- Any language or variety that you speak that you feel is linguistically / culturally distinct from Standard English that you would like to inform more people about. For example: Shetlandic, Scots, Ulster Scots. 

I don’t have anything finalised yet, but if you would be wiling to speak to me about some text-based interviews for the sake of qualitative and informative tumblr posts, please send me a message!

(NB: if I have used any names of languages that are not preferred, tell me and I will change them. I don’t know a lot about the non-Celtic and non-Germanic languages here, which is part of my reason for wanting to make this series of posts in the first place.)

learning sign language (or any language for that matter) for your partner is such an experience because after i could spell both our names, the first thing i wanted to learn was "i love you."

i keep randomly practicing it, "i love you, i love you, i love you." this massive grin just shows up on my face whenever I do. it makes me so, so happy. and I can't wait for it to make him happy, too.

Am too lazy but idk I feel like the little child would learn sign language but the only things is just “you’re welcome/thanks” so the tv wouldn’t even understand

AWWWW YES I WAS THINKING OF SOMETHING LIKE THIS FOR TELLY!!!! I remember when I was younger there was a kids show that taught kids basic sign language, so I wouldn't put it past Telly to just watch shows like that and learn sign language from them! It's something they'd probably focus on later on in life so they don't use it a lot as a kid, they're getting by just fine as is, they can always write stuff down if it's really important and they can't express it by wildly gesturing lol.

They already have to have subtitles on for everything since their speaked doesn't work, I can just imagine seeing them lying on the floor in silence with a movie or something playing on their screen, must be the life. Also they'd forget you have to have other people around you know sign language too in order for them to understand what you're saying.

Ive been hoh since i was around 6, my hearing fluctuates and theres been times where ive been almost completely deaf. I got hearing aids at 10 and that was it.

I never learnt sign language. I never saw any deaf people on TV. I never met any deaf people due to living in a very rural area. I felt so isolated, especially since i had no one to relate too.

I desperately want to see more hoh/deaf representation, i want kids to learn sign language at school pleaseeeeeee

People of the deaf/hard of hearing community, I have a question

I’m watching the new season of the Great British Bake Off and one of the bakers has a sign language interpreter and it got me curious how different/similar ASL and BSL are to each other. Obviously they’re different languages but American spoken English and British spoken English are basically the same.

I know the alphabet for the two are very different which surprised me. Are ASL and BSL similar at all? Lots of shared words? Nothing alike?

july is disability pride month, btw!

i think we should take this month as an opportunity to do the necessary work to recognise ableism within this fandom and in the work of historians and other tudor history media. ableist misinformation and language is unfortunately commonplace in the tudor history fandom — consider the language people use when discussing physical or mental illness and/or impairments with regards to historical figures.

additionally, consider this a gentle reminder that academia is often inaccessible to many with disabilities, and that there is a serious mental health crisis within universities! please keep this in mind, and put your energy towards accommodating people where you can!
