Right... so that took way longer than expected. Originally, it all seemed fine - I have most of my things in a single, neat folder. And then I remembered I have a Microsoft Account... and a WordPad full of old fics... and several workbooks with their own things in them. I think I'm still missing one workbook, all truth be told!

Smartass and Eddie get very heated about their respective opinions on food. Like whether Potatoes have a flavor. Eddie’s argument is they do, Smartass thinks they're just filler. Smartass critizises Eddie for "only" seasoning with salt and pepper when what he really means is Eddie just defaults to savory as his main taste profile.

Eddie’s food traditions are Americanized Germanic and Italian. He's a fan of very rich, meaty, heavy foods. His typical work week diet when he's busy includes multiple servings of liver and onions on thick slices of staled bread, beer-braised brats with fresh white onion and dijon, a gigantic pot of chili or other tomato-based stews he can leave unattended, fish loaf made of saltines and canned fish, and grease-laden plates of eggs, bacon, sausage, and toast. Most of his fruits and vegetables on hand are canned. He legit likes the taste of pickled eggs.

Weeks where he's less busy he whips together pasta, rice, or lentil dishes with as many fresh meats and vegetables as he can afford, cooking every meal individually instead of his usual big batches. Squash and green beans are common frontrunners.

Smartass has cooked many styles of cuisine and for home-cooking he prefers hot and fast flashes of heat like stir-frying or slowly building layers of flavor like an Indian curry. He eats lots of seafood but he much prefers fresh over canned, smoked, pickled, or salted. He will use some smoked but it's as a garnish. At first appalled by Eddie's Fish Loaf, he's impressed by the balance of salt, oil, and dried herbs that've been rehydrated by resting the mix in the fridge before baking. He thinks it needs a spicy sauce drizzle or some lingonberry jam on the side to brighten it up but otherwise, a very meaty, filling fish dish.

He brings over jars of things that Eddie would never even consider pickling: Pig's feet, okra, green beans, asparagus, spicy carrots sticks. Eddie shelves them and Nick will inevitably be the one to pull them down. Then Eddie ends up eating some of it to get the jars out of the fridge and he's like yep, that's a pickle, alright. Hard to screw 'em up, they just taste like vinegar. This annoys Smartass greatly because they're supposed to be an accompaniment to something, you don't just eat spoonfuls of pickled pearl onions, you need to see a doctor or go get a damn salt-lick or something.

He considers it a win when he sees Eddie making two bagels and cream cheese topped with chopped hardboiled eggs, fresh onion, leftover salmon, pickled beets, and some other various things, each ingredient arranged in different parts of the round, overlaping slightly. Variety in every bite.

Eddie takes great pleasure in challenging Smartass' opinion about potatoes by cooking him the Perfect Loaded Twice-Baked Potato, Potato Salad, and a delicate seafood Chowder with thick, toothsome chunks of red potato. He used Russet Potato starch as the thickening agent, going lighter on the cream and butter so the seafood could really shine.

This and his eating habits now, influenced by the Great Depression, reflect what I've come to learn about cooking and living on my own. Poor people may not have resturant-applicable training but they will find ways to innovate on the simplest, cheapest ingredients possible by cooking them over and over and over again. Through repetition you get a knack for contrasting hot and cold, soft and crispy and chewy, sweet and salty, and use that to accent heavy starches or fatty meats because that's what's gonna keep you going. Home-cooks do not have a lesser skillset to a five-star chef, they're adapting to very different pressures of what gets prepared, who it's for, how long it needs to keep, etc.

Trying to cook like a chef in a restaurant just doesn't work a lot of the time because it's way too easy for ingredients to go bad when you turn your back on them. Like it or not cans, dried herbs, and frozen ingredients are essential to cheap, filling, flavorful meals, so suck it up and learn to embrace what you do have access to.

Smartass knows all this from experience, too, he's just lost sight of it. Working for the Judge may have sucked but the Weasel Gang had a very generous food budget, a concession to keep them hooked.

Eddie's not a huge dessert guy. He likes pies and rich chocolate cake every once in a while but he much prefers fresh fruit as his special treat after a meal.

Nick will try pretty much anything once, even being drawn to things that look or smell kinda gross because he's ecstatic he can actually eat again, he's sampling everything this world has to offer. He's always on the lookout for food trucks, pop-up stands, and hole-in-the-wall restaurants when out of a case.

With familiar cuisines he has a sweet tooth, always going for Pancakes and French toast and waffles when he pops into a classic diner. When he makes Bread Pudding he does a sweet batch for himself and a savory version for Eddie. The more he tries the more he gains a penchant for sour, bitter, and spicy foods. He always carries the exotic candies from Chinatown and mint gum to tide him over when work gets between him and his next curiosity right down the block.

He loves anything with a crunch. He often munches on green apples for a snack. He likes strong herbal or Chai teas and goes from loading his coffee with cream and sugar, not used to the taste of fresh grounds, to jet-black, hot oil. At home he sometimes drops a tea infuser filled with whole cloves, allspice, bits of cinnamon stick, star anise pods, etc into his mug of coffee.

Conrad and Billy are also adventurous, but less so than Nick. Conrad will go for anything that's loaded with carbs. He eats lots of beans and oatmeal at the ranch but he loves all kinds of pizza and pasta, even the cheapest, shittiest pizzas, as long as it's got a thick crust. To him that's the just shove it in your face and you're good food. He's a bit of a snob when it comes to "proper" barbecue, he'll still eat it, but he has very high standards for how each cut of meat should be seasoned, cooked, and served as part of a full barbecue spread. Also a big fan of greaseball burgers and punishingly hot Wings and Chili. Billy does better than him at Spice Challenges, though.

When Conrad wants something sweet he wants it tooth-meltingly sweet, a sugar and fat overload, he loves giant ice cream sundaes, fresh mini donuts, caramels, caramel rolls, caramel-topped cheesecake, and pecan pie.

“A marquis weds a poor girl on the condition that she obey him utterly and never complain. On her wedding day he has her stripped naked and then dressed in rich robes. Griselda keeps her word so well that the marquis decides he must test her. When a son and a daughter are born, he lies to her, telling her they must be killed because his people resent them as base. She asks only that they be decently buried. He hides the children and has them raised far away. Years go by. He pretends to divorce her, sending her home to her father's hut. As she leaves, he again strips her of her clothes, and she begs for a smock to hide her nakedness. 

Still unsatisfied, he soon brings her back to the palace to wait on his new bride during his wedding feast. The bride is his own daughter, now grown. Griselda complies, asking only that he treat his new wife more gently than he has her. At the last moment, the marquis relents. Reunited with her children, Griselda swoons, then revives. Dressed again in her rich robes, she embraces her loving husband. Her fame brings her eternal hosannas. But not from everyone. The name of Griselda has also been used as a shorthand for female submissiveness so close to stupidity as to be indistinguishable from it. 

"The Wise Government of a Gentlewoman" from Painter's Palace of Pleasure (1666), a tale loosely based on a story by Marguerite de Navarre, turns sardonic laughter against the patient wife. When a gentlewoman's home is threatened with ruin because of her husband's nightly trysts with a maidservant, the wife chooses to go on the offensive. When her attempts to shame him don't work, she lights a fire in the maid's room and smokes him out in the middle of the night. The narrator urges wives in a similar fix to take action: "For what Griselde could suffer her wedded husband, assembled in bedde, in depth of sleep, to rise and runne a straie like a wylde horse, neying after the straied female kind of that sort?"

This is not to deny that Griselda's story was potent and ubiquitous. On the contrary: her fable spawned a multitude of jests and tales that do not even name her. Some stories that draw on Griselda do, however, question the idea of total wifely submission. As if acknowledging the dangers of the tale as masculinist fantasy, some jests warn husbands not to try acting like the marquis at home: 

A young man lately married to a wife thought it was good policy to get the mastery of her in the beginning, and came to her when the pot was seething .... [H]e suddenly commanded her to take the pot from the fire which [she] answered and said that the meat was not ready to eat. And he said again: "I will have it taken off for my pleasure." This good woman, loath yet to offend him, set the pot beside the fire as he bad. And, anon after he commanded her to set the pot behind the door. And she said thereto again: "Ye be not wise therein." But he precisely said it should be so as he bad, and she genteely again did his commandement. 

This man yet not satisifed, commanded her to set the pot ahigh on the hen roost. "What!" quod the wife again, "I trow ye be mad." And he fiercely then commanded her to set it there or else, he said, she should repent. She somewhat afraid to move his patience, took a ladder and set it to the roost, and went herself up the ladder, and took the pot in her hand-praying her husband then to hold the ladder fast for sliding, which he so did. And when the husband looked up and saw the pot stand there on high, he said thus: "Lo, now standeth the pot there as I would have it." The wife, hearing that, suddenly poured the hot pottage on his head and said thus: "And now been the pottage there as I would have them." By this tale men may see it is no wisdom for a man to attempt a meek woman's patience too far, lest it turn to his own hurt and damage.

Refracted and diffused through thousands of popular texts and performances, the legend of patient Griselda is specially marked as an irritant to women. As Wiltenburg points out in her study of the street literature of England and Germany, "Authors of both countries noted that this story annoyed real-life women, who had no intention of following Griselda's example; but it was recommended to them nevertheless." Yet according to Peter Burke, popular imagery beat into everyone's head the dictum that women had to know their place, as is clear not only from the popular (masculine) images of the woman as villain, such as the shrew, but even from the images of the heroine. 

For women, martyrdom was virtually the only way to sanctity .... equally passive were two heroines who often took the place of saints in Protestant countries: chaste Susanna ... and patient Griselda, who were celebrated in German plays, in English puppet-plays, in Swedish ballads, and Danish chapbooks .... Judith slaying the tyrant Holofernes seems to have been an exception among heroines. Taking Wiltenburg's matter-of-fact comment about Griselda's annoyingness as my guide, I want to discompose the overly static picture painted by Burke. First, it is necessary to peel away some of the layers of indignation and interpretation she has evoked since appearing on the literary scene. 

Her story's power to shock and disturb women in particular has only intensified over time, according to Judith Bronfman, who has studied its interpretive history from its beginnings in fourteenth century Italy to the present day. English reception of the legend begins with Chaucer, whose Clerk of Oxenford presents the story of "paciente Grisildis" to his Canterbury pilgrims. His "may be the most disliked of all the Canterbury Tales," but it is Griselda, not her husband, who arouses the most distaste today-suggesting that our age despises a passive victim even more than a dynamic sadist. To many feminist scholars, Griselda furnishes a crux for analyses of gender ideology and functions as a paradigm of the violent subjugation and silencing of early modern women.

Reactions to her story can be highly charged; Lisa Jardine finds that "her resignation is terrifying.” The fear and outrage Griselda provokes may have kept us from realizing there were cracks in her myth during the early modern period. Scholars have seldom noted signs of mocking criticism toward Griselda in tales and plays that seem engineered to praise her. When Griselda is divested of her rich robes of literariness and her alluring aura of religious and psychic enigma, she strikes more than a few observers as foolish. To the jesting women who mock her, she is not the Christly Fool of Saint Paul, the witty Folly of Erasmus, or the keen jester of Lear but the garden-variety fool whose deeds are dismissed as silly. 

To writers, Griselda's patience was shopworn and ripe for parody. Printers tried to dress up the old tale, familiar from ballads, puppet shows, and sermons, by stressing her glamorous social mobility. By 1619, Griselda was being used as a lesson in how to marry a millionaire: one pamphlet touted itself as "shewing how Maides, By Her Example, In Their Good Behavior May Marrie Rich Husbands; and Likewise Wives By Their Patience and Obedience May Caine Much Glorie." Didactically tooled and rhetorically productive, Griselda continues to be a conversation piece. She may have begun her literary life in gland as a secular saint; but by the sixteenth century, she had become a household word idealized in sermons and conduct books but treated by jests as an impossibility, like "the silent woman," a close relative.”

i started to make my own rules to the time when my parents were working, i had to start growing up, make decisions and move fast when necesarly.

So i was on my own for a while, back in Germany my anxiety was increasing so much because of the town that i was living in, it was a cold town with cold people, like anyone who was crossing those streets were so different and they felt like "i have to keep living" you know ? That was difficult for me, i started hanging in the city by myself with a cup of frapuccinno from starbucks.

I got to see the Berlin Wall, Brandenburg Gates, and the Old Church from the center of the capital Alexanderplatz, i finished going in a park named Gesundbrunnen in Tempelhof..alone, i was smoking on a bench and watching people and thinking about what's the matter with me here, i don't have any friends and nothing, I'm alone here.

After a bit I started learing german from different books, and i went going on a little lake in Oranienburg by bus, that was my place were i was reading.

Building up Affordable Housing in Interwar France

In the 1920s, architect Hector Guimard, a pioneer of the stylized natural forms and curving lines of late 19th century Art Nouveau, turned his attention to socially conscious design as France struggled to recover from the widespread devastation of the First World War.

The impact of the “Great War” on French infrastructure, agriculture and housing was overwhelming, with over 17,000 public buildings and more than 500,000 homes damaged, in addition to destruction of hundreds of miles of roads and railway tracks and millions of hectares of agricultural land.[1] The loss of so many dwellings fueled a housing crisis that was felt most strongly in Paris and the surrounding suburbs to which so many had fled during the war, not only to escape the encroaching German army but to find work in the war industries in the Department of the Seine. Housing construction had essentially stopped during the war years, thus the unplanned urban sprawl in these suburbs, characterized by high-density, unsanitary dwellings, became inundated with people for whom there were few other options.

While affordable housing had always been a problem in Paris, it was, without question, intensified by the war. Before 1914, groups like the Société du Nouveau Paris and the Société Français des Logements Hygiéniques à Bon Marché encouraged architects to expand their activities into the everyday matters of civic infrastructure and housing. After the war, and with the encouragement of public officials, these efforts were redoubled. In 1921, Hector Guimard, Frantz Jourdain, Henri Sauvage, Louis Süe and other high-profile French designers and architects founded the Groupe des Architects Modernes, a consortium which aimed to rebuild the devastated rural areas in addition to designing new mass housing projects and working cities.[2]

One of Guimard’s first forays into standardized housing was a series of three “factory built” rural houses designed for régions dévastés (devastated regions) in 1920. A hand-written notation on the plan sets the stage for his later experiments in serialized design, stating:

The factory will forge the following elements, ready to be laid: floorboards, frames, stairs, doors, shutters, carpentry and woodwork, stove, sink, W.C. and septic tank, pipes for water and gas, and electricity.

A few years later, Guimard designed a larger series of eight distinct dual-family houses to accommodate families of differing sizes. Donated to Cooper Hewitt by his widow shortly after his death, the building plans, accompanied by dozens of detailed sketches, reveal that Guimard intended to use prefabricated, modular components to ensure that the construction of these much-needed dwellings would be fast, simple, and affordable. These plans, which relied on his ingenious system of dry concrete block construction, also utilized standardization in the interior design, from larger elements like doors, windows, fireplaces, and appliances, to the smaller, more decorative features on the exterior, including decorative bricks and simplified variants of Guimard’s cast-iron railings.

While Guimard is best known for the Castel Béranger and other highly individualized, large-scale apartment buildings and hôtels particuliers that typified the Art Nouveau aesthetic, these designs for affordable housing reflect the new spirit of French architects and designers during the interwar period, characterized by experiments with affordable materials and a focus on socially conscious design and urban planning.  It is unknown if these designs ever came to fruition; though he erected several apartment buildings in the early 1920s and participated in the 1925 Exposition des Arts Decoratifs in Paris with the Groupe des Architectes Modernes, Guimard completed few architectural commissions in the 1930s. In 1938, admist rising tensions across Europe, Guimard and his wife, the Jewish-American painter Adeline Oppenheim, immigrated to New York City where he died just four years later.

so some sparknotes!

ana is a 38 year old woman who up to 20 years ago used to come to put-in-bay every summer since she was a kid. i.e. from about 4 years old to when she was 18. she loved the island back then, the exploration, and the water and the people. until she got hurt by the island.

she had a summer fling with gordon lear, and her island best friend spread a rumour that ana was a slut that slept with everyone. since she was a local and ana a tourist,everyone believed the local. so when ana realised she was pregnant after the summer, she came back to find gordon in the autumn of 2000 to tell him she’s pregnant. she was however shunned and shamed by pretty much everyone on the island. no one really believed her.

ana’s daughter came to the world at a very unexpected and accidental time. she was no where near ready to have kids or be a mother. she was just a kid herself. however, abortion had always been out of the question. whether she’d be raising the baby alone, or whether she had been disowned by her family. while she supports abortion as free choice for women, it was just something she herself could never do.

she got lucky though, in some ways. her family supported her decision to keep the baby and said they would help her raise the child. they couldn’t even imagine adoption either. they couldn’t live with the idea that they had a grandchild somewhere out in the world.

the first three years of ana’s life were a mess. she was lost, even with her parents’ help. she worked odd jobs here and there, but she was constantly exhausted from either being home with her child or working.

by somewhat luck and hard-work she became a published writer. the stories she first created were ones she would make up on the spot as good-night tales for her daughter. eventually she started writing them down and after an impossible amount of meetings with publicists and editors, she got a book deal. now, she’s a young adult fantasy writer (in this rp universe, she wrote the works of tamora pierce) and is working on her latest book.

fast forward to june of 2020. her daughter had finished her final year of high school (or first year of college - up to you). her daughter wanted to finally meet her biological father. find out who he is, whether he’s anything like her, or rather, she anything like him. like her mother, she’s proud and spirited. she told anna that she’d go to put-in-bay with or without ana, so ana came with.

she had a summer fling with gordon lear, and her island best friend spread a rumour that ana was a slut that slept with everyone. since she was a local and ana a tourist,everyone believed the local. so when ana realised she was pregnant after the summer, she came back to find gordon in the autumn of 2000 to tell him she’s pregnant. she was however shunned and shamed by pretty much everyone on the island. no one really believed her.

ana’s daughter came to the world at a very unexpected and accidental time. she was no where near ready to have kids or be a mother. she was just a kid herself. however, abortion had always been out of the question. whether she’d be raising the baby alone, or whether she had been disowned by her family. while she supports abortion as free choice for women, it was just something she herself could never do.

she got lucky though, in some ways. her family supported her decision to keep the baby and said they would help her raise the child. they couldn’t even imagine adoption either. they couldn’t live with the idea that they had a grandchild somewhere out in the world.

the first three years of ana’s life were a mess. she was lost, even with her parents’ help. she worked odd jobs here and there, but she was constantly exhausted from either being home with her child or working.

by somewhat luck and hard-work she became a published writer. the stories she first created were ones she would make up on the spot as good-night tales for her daughter. eventually she started writing them down and after an impossible amount of meetings with publicists and editors, she got a book deal. now, she’s a young adult fantasy writer (in this rp universe, she wrote the works of tamora pierce) and is working on her latest book.

Oh, please!!** Things did get going a bit finally and In the middle of some rather hard driving questions, Trump suddenly appeared on my TV with the President of Palestine. The media bought right into it and it was everywhere. I had to find C-span 3 to continue the hearings and skip the photo op.

There is a letter from deputy attorney general , Rosenstein and Jeff Sessions recommended the firing but Trump says he was gonna fire him all along. Word is that Comey is mad, Rosenstein is livid and also the Presidents communication team. Acting FBI head McCabe assures us that the files were immediately secured. The Prez says Comey informed him that he wasn’t under investigation.  The Fox spin seemed to blame the fact that Comey  would not take the Obama wiretap allegations seriously. Trump also signed an executive order to look into his claims of voter fraud. It is like the biggest conspiracy theory nut got to be president and now we could spend millions of dollars on his crazy whims. OMG! **I feel that I may puke if I have to again see that clip of Comey and Trump shaking hands. Word is that Comey hated that day. ** And now the Justice department has appointed former FBI head Robert Mueller to lead a special counsel on the Russian probe.** Trump claims that ”No politician had it worse” at a Coast Guard commencement.** He probably should not have thrown Rosenstein under the bus because his appointment of Mueller gives him a lot of room to investigate.

He calls Trump an infantalist for immaturity is becoming the dominant role of his Presidency.  He writes, ‘His falsehoods are attempts to build a world in which he can feel good for an instant and comfortably deceive himself. He is an ‘incompetent person who is too incompetent to understand his own incompetence.’ Well said!

***** I personally think that some people just like to live in chaos. Those people have taken over for now. I suppose that Trump loyalists like being puppets. It seems they can’t really think for themselves because everything scary clown does seems just fine to them. As long as he is firing people and disrupting the status quo, they are good no matter the cost. No backbone.

Idaho congressman, Raul Labrador even said later that “Nobody dies because they don’t have access to health care,” They all have a very strange sense of humor. To quote a song from another time, “Ain’t no time to wonder why, whew! We’re all gonna die!” It is like a nightmare. I guess their thinking is that if they get rid of all the poor people, they won’t have to look at us anymore? They do not understand the idea of paycheck to paycheck. To get money back on your taxes to help fund your own health care is impossible for many people. They feel they have to get this health care plan through so they can then do the tax plan. They need the health care money for the poor so that the top moneymakers can have their big tax cuts.** Why not just fix the problems with Obamacare like a not for profit public option to buy into?**Women are a majority in this country, how the fuck did we get here? ** I loved Bette Midler’s tweet on it the best: “GOP passed a health care bill so bad they exempted themselves from it. They may live longer, but when they die, it’s straight to hell.”

Paleontologist Vinther says the dinosaur, from 110 million years ago was so well preserved that it might have been walking around a couple of years ago. It is now on display at the new Alberta museum. How fucking exciting is that?
