This blog is dedicated to puppeting in the mainline LittleBigPlanet games (1, 2, 3). Puppeting is something I take pride in, as I'm not a big fan of working with Sackbots. Being able to shape and move characters in ways I desire creates a lot more uniqueness in my films.
I may post about my own creations or progress with films. I will allow submissions of other people's creations regarding puppeting. I will answer any asks regarding my creations or logic. Though I do not like using Sackbots, I am willing to answer questions regarding logic for those.

OL Philadelphia scenes will be filmed in Liverpool
The street will be closed for two weeks while filming takes place on the Starz show.

A city centre street will be transformed back to the 1770s ahead of the filming of the hit TV show Outlander.
Canning Street in the Georgian Quarter area of Liverpool will be transformed into 1770s Philadelphia for the filming of the seventh season of Outlander. Left Bank Pictures Ltd (LBP) wrote to residents earlier this month laying out plans to dress the road to appropriately transform it back to the eighteenth century.
The letter seen by the ECHO documented plans to met with neighbours and residents on October 12 to discuss the filming intentions. LBP Pictures Ltd will be closing Canning Street to ensure necessary access and a safe working area in two different stages.

Between Monday, October 31 and Sunday, November 6 Canning Street will be closed from Bedford Street down to Sandon Street/Falkner Square. And on Monday, November 7 to Sunday, November 13 the street will be closed from Catherine Street to Sandon Street/Falkner Square.
In a bid to minimise disruption resident parking will be restricted to one side of the street. Alternative parking will be provided and round the clock security will also be in place. LBP Pictures Ltd said the company will also make a donation to a charity of the residents' choice, as per Liverpool Film Office 's code of practice, that can help support or benefit the community.
Canning Street is notable for its Georgian architecture and proximity to both the city centre and the Liverpool Cathedral. Outlander is a historical TV series based on an ongoing novel series of the same name by Diana Gabaldon.
The series focuses on a military nurse in Scotland, who in 1945, finds herself transported back in time to 1743. The Starz series is currently developing its seventh series.

DESILU SOLD!
July 27, 1967
Desilu Productions was formed in 1950 by Lucille Ball and her then-husband, Desi Arnaz. The name was a portmanteau of the couple's first names and was originally applied to the Ball-Arnaz ranch.
Desilu was one of many television production companies that sprung up all over the Hollywood catering to the growing needs of the increasingly popular medium of television. The success of “I Love Lucy” enabled Desilu to expand throughout the 1950s.
When RKO Pictures went bankrupt in 1957, Desilu bought its studios and other location facilities. These acquisitions gave the Ball-Arnaz TV empire a total of 33 sound stages - four more than Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and eleven more than Twentieth Century-Fox had in 1957.
Desilu operated the physical facilities bought from RKO, which included the main Gower Street Studio in Hollywood, next door to Paramount Pictures. It also consisted of a studio in Culver City and the ‘40 Acres’ backlot – most famous for being Mayberry in “The Andy Griffith Show.”

On the lot there was a small theatre called Desilu Playhouse where Lucy hosted the Desilu Workshop, a training ground for new performers.
After the breakup of the Ball-Arnaz marriage in early 1960, Desilu remained successful.
In 1962, Ball bought out Arnaz and became the first female Hollywood mogul ever to run a major motion picture studio, albeit a reluctant one, as Ball never wanted to be a businesswoman. It was shortly after her second marriage to comedian Gary Morton in 1961, that she left the minutiae of the studio's business and financial affairs to her new husband by naming him Co-Chairman of the Board of Directors.
During Ball's time as sole owner, Desilu developed popular series such as “Mission: Impossible” (1966), “Mannix” (1967), “That Girl” (1966), and “Star Trek” (1966).
By April 1964, Desilu found itself in financial trouble – partly due to the fact that husband Morton was inexperienced at running a motion picture studio. “The Lucy Show” was their only remaining self-made production, even though other shows were still produced on the lot as consignments (rentals) from other production companies.
Ball’s success as an actress continued until February 1967, when Ball announced she would sell Desilu to Gulf+Western, a decision which was formalized on July 27, 1967. The act of selling Desilu to Gulf+Western brought the studio under the same parent company as its next-door neighbor Paramount Pictures. The event was commemorated the next day by a dramatic ceremony in which Ball cut a ribbon of film stock which had replaced a wall between the two production studios. Lucille Ball left the Desilu lot the very same day (taking her own hugely popular “The Lucy Show” with her, the only studio asset not included in the sale), directly after the ownership transfer ceremony.
After selling Desilu, rather than working for Paramount, Ball established her own production company, Lucille Ball Productions (LBP) in 1968. The company went to work on her new series “Here's Lucy” that year. The program ran until 1974 and enjoyed several years of ratings success. LBP continues to exist, and its primary purpose is residual sales of license rights for “Here's Lucy.”

Selected as part of the Brooklyn Shorts Film Festival, Louie's Brother Peter (LBP) tells the story of Peter, an early 20's Bay Ridge Brooklyn born and raised kid with slight Autism runs drugs for his brother Louie. All of his known allegiances are challenged when he meets Abby; a Brooklyn transplant unlike Peter's ever met before.
This short was shot on the coldest weekend of the year in February 2017. I want to thank my truly incredible cast that make this project something worth watching.
I also want to thank my amazing crew. My brothers and sisters almost all of which were volunteering professionals, went through the trenches of down and dirty indie filmmaking all to show support to this film. I love you all and I'll never forget it.

Chronic Lower Back Pain (CLBP) Market Share & Size
DelveInsight’s ‘Chronic Lower Back Pain (CLBP) Market Insights, Epidemiology and Market Forecast–2030’ report delivers an in-depth understanding of the Chronic lower back pain (CLBP), historical and forecasted epidemiology as well as the Chronic lower back pain (CLBP) market trends in the United States, EU5 (Germany, Spain, Italy, France, and United Kingdom) and Japan.
Chronic Lower Back Pain (CLBP) Disease Understanding and Treatment Algorithm
Chronic Low Back Pain (CLBP) Overview
Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is defined as pain that persists for 12 weeks or longer, even after an initial injury or underlying cause of acute low back pain. Low back pain is very common and at one point everyone must have faced this problem. Lower back pain that is long-term (for more than 3 months) is called chronic low back pain, this condition might originate from an injury, disease, or stress on different structures of the body, and pain may vary significantly and maybe felt as bone pain, nerve pain, or muscle pain. The intensity of the pain also ranges from mild to severe. CLBP is the second leading cause of disability worldwide being major welfare and economic problem. The prevalence of CLBP in adults has increased significantly in the last decade and is continuously increasing vividly in the aging population. This condition affects men and women in all ethnic groups equally. This disease also leads to stress, depression, and anxiety. CLBP affects physically and psychologically and creates a significant amount of economic burden due to loss of function, loss of work productivity, treatment costs, and disability payments.
The probable causes of CLBP are the curve of the spine, such as scoliosis or kyphosis, medical problems (fibromyalgia or rheumatoid arthritis), and piriformis syndrome (a pain disorder involving a muscle in the buttocks called the piriformis muscle). Many people with CLBP have arthritis or tear of the spine due to heavy exercise, herniated disk, or due to surgery. A herniated disc is the part of the spinal disk pushed onto the nearby nerve. Usually, these disks provide space and cushion in the spine and the loss of movement can be seen as overtime if these disks dry out and become thinner and brittle. Spinal Stenosis is the condition that arises if the spaces between the spinal nerves and spinal cord become more narrowed.
Chronic Low Back Pain (CLBP) Diagnosis
The diagnosis and evaluation of CLBP are very important to reduce or to rule out the risk factors due to severe injury. The first recommendation is a thorough physical examination by a well-trained physician. CLBP testing may include blood tests, radiography (X-ray imaging), bone scans, computed tomography (CT) scans, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), diagnostic injections, bone scan, electromyography (EMG), lumbar radiography, and many other specialized tests.
continued in the report…..
Chronic Low Back Pain (CLBP) Treatment
CLBP is the most prevalent chronic pain condition and the second most common cause of disability in the US, after arthritis or rheumatism. CLBP may be nociceptive or neuropathic or include both components. The presence of a neuropathic component is related to the more intense pain of longer duration, and a higher prevalence of co-morbidities. The actual mechanism and cause of CLBP are still unknown and due to this situation, there are no universally accepted treatment guidelines and the management of the treatment is limited. If the source of the pain is not known or can not be treated, the best option remains is to reduce the flare-ups and making the pain manageable with nonsurgical treatments. There are non-surgical treatments (physical therapy, diet, meditation, lifestyle modifications) Injection-based Treatments, pharmacologic treatments.
For some patients, CLBP can be relieved by single-agent therapy, but as both nociceptive and neuropathic mechanisms are often present, combining agents with different mechanisms of action is a rational approach Analgesics, anti-inflammatory drugs, muscle relaxants, and other medications can be used to help control chronic back pain. However, most come with unwanted side effects and are not intended for prolonged use. Opioid medication should not be used without a physician’s recommendation.
The use of non-opioid analgesics such as acetaminophen (APAP), non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), or cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitors for initial management for LBP. The use of muscle relaxants should be avoided in patients with CLBP. Treatment of mild CLBP often begins with the use of NSAIDs and mild non-opioid analgesics, while more potent opioid analgesics are reserved for the pain of moderate-to-severe intensity.

Chronic Low Back Pain (CLBP) Market Outlook
Majority of the low back pain is caused by a mechanical etiology, which includes a degenerative disc or joint disease, vertebral fracture, and deformities and occur in up to 80-90% of patients, while neurogenic, inflammatory, and other less common causes make up the remainder of etiologies. If the cause of low back pain is inflammatory in nature, targeted therapy includes treatment with anti‐inflammatory agents. This refers to early use of non-steroidal anti‐inflammatories (NSAIDs) and treatment with corticosteroids or disease‐modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) in patients with rheumatoid arthritis or ankylosing spondylitis. Additionally, these disease states have a higher incidence of neuropathic pain and thus may require adjuvant medications that target this specific pain type. Some patients with mechanical low back pain also have increased pain due to spasticity and may benefit from treatment with antispasmodics.
The Chronic low back pain (CLBP) market outlook of the report helps to build a detailed comprehension of the historic, current and forecasted Chronic low back pain (CLBP) market trends by analyzing the impact of current therapies on the market, unmet needs, drivers and barriers, and demand of better technology.

Puppeting Tip: Dialogue
Dialogue is a simple task if you have Sackbots, as Sackbots can be given an actor name. This actor name is especially useful in films, where animations and dialogue are all stored on a sequencer. The actor name helps specify which actor is who, and further more, which set of actions does what character perform.
In the case of puppeted characters however, they cannot be assigned an actor name. Because of this, most newer film creators resort to putting the puppeted character's dialogue in captions or subtitles.
These both display the dialogue without a speech bubble, however, when the camera is far away from the sequencer, the added voice does not follow. This is because voices, whether recorded or gibberish, are emitted from whatever they're attached/assigned to. The voice, in this case, emits from the location the sequencer is at.
So, how do we fix this?
Personally, I take some sticker panel (invisible material works too but removing collision can be helpful) and change the opacity to 0%, then I place a microchip in the center and create magic mouths with the desired dialogue. For those who don't have either of these, placing the microchip directly on where your puppet's mouth is works, too.
We will be calling this character "Leo".
From here, we can start using the sequencer. We cannot directly put the magic mouths on the sequencer, so we need something that will activate them.
I like to use batteries, they can be extended on the sequencer, can be coloured, and are useful for one-time events such as lines of dialogue. In this example, Leo will be saying three things, so we will put three batteries down and connect them to each respective magick mouth.
Now, when we play the sequencer...
The dialogue now appears as a proper speech bubble AND if given a voice, the voice can be heard so long as the microchip is on camera!

Patrick Starrr Reveals One/Size Beauty Brand – WWD
https://pmcwwd.files.wordpress.com/2020/07/patrick-starrr-onesize.jpg?w=640&h=415&crop=1
Patrick Starrr wants to bring “all-encompassing diversity” to the beauty industry.
Since Jan. 1, the Filipino beauty influencer has been asking his 4.6 million Instagram followers and 4.4 million YouTube subscribers to film themselves saying the following phrase: “Makeup is a one size fits all.”
The “ultimate gag,” Starrr said, is that phrase is the messaging for One/Size, his first cosmetics company and joint venture with Luxury Brand Partners. One/Size will debut at Sephora online on July 17 and in stores on July 30. Starrr will reveal the initial product offering and pricing on July 10.
In the seven years since he uploaded his first YouTube video, Starrr has become one of the leading voices in the beauty influencer industry. He paired with MAC Cosmetics in 2017 for a product collaboration that industry sources estimated would surpass $25 million in sales. The one-off collaboration led to more, and Starrr eventually turned one of the subsequent collections into a music video, “Got the Glam.”
One/Size incorporates Starrr’s signature “kitsch and class” style, and is a celebration of “the drag queens, the LGBTQ+, my trans brothers and sisters,” he said.
The branding is bold and dramatic: “I’m a drama queen — in the right way.”
One/Size marks an expansion of LBP’s makeup portfolio. Courtesy of One/Size
“My identity as Patrick Starrr is extraordinary performance,” said Starrr, whose real name is Patrick Simondac. “It’s a performance art — that’s what I do as a YouTuber. My products [are] fashion meeting function. I dress like this to get noticed, I wear so much makeup to get noticed. What can I do that’s gonna get noticed but perform to the highest level when it comes to consumers and my audience investing their money in me and the brand.”
Starrr built One/Size in partnership with Luxury Brand Partners, the incubator behind established beauty brands such as Oribe, which sold to Kao in 2017 for about $400 million. LBP is said to have invested $10 million in One/Size — an amount that is believed to be at least three times what LBP usually invests.
In an interview with WWD, LBP chief executive officer Tevya Finger said he was moved by Starrr’s “highly inclusive nature” and his videos, which Finger described as “full-blown productions.”
“When he says being the voice for the people who have no voice, it’s really true,” Finger said of Starrr.
Bob DeBaker said Starrr is “a business guy” who has emphasized social media savvy while hiring for the One/Size team.
One/Size has been in the works for a couple of years, but as its launch date approached, the unforeseen coronavirus pandemic demanded a remote way of working that LBP had not previously experienced. LBP and One/Size’s teams have not been in the same room together since the end of February.
“Every brand we’ve ever launched at LBP, you’re physically sitting with the artist and they’re coming to your office and touching stuff and there’s a lot of people around,” Finger said. “Imagine launching a brand over this computer. It’s fascinating that can even happen.”
With One/Size, LBP grows its makeup portfolio, which includes Smith & Cult.
“Makeup is quite a cluttered field,” Finger said. “To me, [Starrr] really is different and unique and special. Normally I’d shy away because there’s too many fish in the pond.”
LBP previously sold Becca Cosmetics to the Estée Lauder Cos. Inc. for upward of $230 million. Prior to joining LBP, DeBaker was Becca’s president and chief executive officer.
One/Size will be exclusively sold at Sephora and be available in all of the retailer’s North American doors — 445 in the U.S. and 78 in Canada — and will be in Sephora’s newly launched Instagram storefront.
Sephora’s executive vice president and chief merchandising officer Artemis Patrick said the retailer was keen on launching Starrr’s brand because its customers favor brands with a “strong sense of purpose.”
“We don’t just take a brand on for the sake of it, we are truly invested in brands’ and founders’ success,” Patrick said.
Sephora has reopened about 90 percent of its doors after closing them due to COVID-19 mandates.
“Our number-one priority has been safety,” Patrick said. “While the experience in-store may feel different, with testers for display only in most stores or even removed to comply with local ordinance and our in-store services suspended for now, our beauty advisors are there to assist and our clients can still leverage a suite of digital tools that we have.”
Starrr, who built his brand through content creation and managing emerging influencers through his agency The Beauty Coop, said he built One/Size to be a “social-first” beauty brand.
“I wanted to create a visual, sensorial experience when it came to creating the product,” he said. “Patrick Starrr is digitally native. It was already second nature to amplify social-first experiences.”
He hopes through One/Size to “make a shift in beauty,” naming diversity as one of the brand’s core tenets.
“OneSize is diversity, variety, for everyone,” Starrr said. “This is an overweight, bald, Asian American man. But I’ve somehow been able to break through the glass ceiling to be celebrated. It is all-encompassing diversity and I think that is gonna be something special to LBP and Sephora.
“Our brand is hot, it’s love, this brand is a love letter to my community,” he continued. “They’re gonna see that sign, sealed and delivered from product to personification to performance. Even behind the scenes, who we are. It already was second nature.”

SEPTEMBER 11
Since 2001, the date September 11th has been a date associated with the life-changing terrorist attacks on America. But previously, the date was one of the busiest in the Lucille Ball calendar, with memorable performances of her three hit sitcoms in three decades. Lucille Ball’s mission in life was to make us laugh - even in our darkest moments. So while we remember the events of 2001, let’s take a quick tour through the date in the life of Lucille Ball.

1960
The September 11, 1960 issue of Parade Magazine (which was inserted into Sunday newspapers nationwide) featured a unique and colorful portrait of Lucille Ball. The article inside was “Lucille Ball: Life Without Desi”. The couple formally divorced in April 1960, five months earlier. This coincided with her last appearance as Lucy Ricardo. Although this would be the first September since 1951 that she wasn’t on series television, she was still working; promoting her new film with Bob Hope called Critic’s Choice. Toward that end, two weeks later, she appeared on “The Garry Moore Show.”
1937
On September 11, 1937 Hollywood columnist Jimmy Starr of the LA Evening Herald Express, rated the film Stage Door as ‘Outstanding’ stating that “smaller roles were excellently portrayed by Lucille Ball and others.”
1943
The Hollywood Bond Cavalcade, a 16-city, two week railroad tour of American by a dozen Hollywood celebrities, comes to New York City on September 11, 1943 for a gala performance at Madison Square Garden designed to sell war bonds to defray the debt incurred by the USA during World War II. Desi Arnaz had gone on a similar tour the year before - but 1943 was Lucy’s turn. Much of America was still reeling financially and emotionally from the effects of the War.
1953
Perhaps the most dramatic September 11th in Lucille Ball’s life came in 1953, when she was accused of being a Communist by the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC).
The news broke on the very same night that “The Girls Go Into Business” (ILL S3;E2) went before the cameras in Desilu’s brand new studio. Needless to say, the news could not be ignored, and prompted Desi’s now famous remarks in his pre-show welcome:
“Lucy has always had a clear conscience about this. She has never been a Communist, and what’s more, she hates every Communist in Hollywood. The only thing red about Lucy is her hair, and even that is not legitimate.”
1955
On Sunday, September 11, 1955, CBS airs the 22nd of 25 repeats of early episodes of “I Love Lucy” under the umbrella title of “The Sunday Lucy Show”. Under the impression that few viewers had a TV set when the series first began,CBS polled viewers to decide which episodes to air in their early Sunday evening time slot (6pm). This week’s entry is “New Neighbors” (ILL S1;E21) from 1952.
1961
On September 11, 1961 CBS aired the fourth and final re-run of "I Love Lucy” to fill a month-long scheduling gap. This is the last prime-time airing of the series in a regular time slot.
1967
On September 11, 1967, Lucille Ball kicks off the sixth and final season of “The Lucy Show” with Milton and Ruth Berle playing themselves.
This was one of many appearances by Milton Berle, who appeared on all of Lucille Ball’s CBS sitcoms, despite being the reigning king of NBC. While all was hysterical on screen, there was a lot of life-changing activity going on for Lucille Ball.
This is the last episode directed by Maury Thompson, who had started working for Desilu in 1956. Ball heard that Thompson wanted a raise and decided to dismiss him and bring back the show’s original director, Jack Donohue.
Having made Desilu profitable again, Ball had just agreed to take the big step of selling Desilu to Paramount, dissolving the company by the end of 1967 and starting up her own Lucille Ball Productions (LBP) to produce a new sitcom, “Here’s Lucy,” rather than work for Paramount. This was perhaps the biggest business decision that Executive Lucy would make in her entire career.
1972
After season 4 of “Here’s Lucy” wrapped, Lucille Ball experienced a run of bad luck. First, the final episode of the season was designed as a pilot for a spin-off series starring Lucie Arnaz, but CBS declined to pick-up the show for production. At the same time, Vivian Vance, who was being eyed as a reliable sidekick for Lucy should Lucie get her own show, was diagnosed with breast cancer. Finally, in January 1972 on a ski trip to her condo in Snowmass, Colorado, Lucille Ball broke her leg. Instead of canceling the series, Ball had the injury written into the scripts, so that Lucy Carter would also have a broken leg. Almost all of this season’s scripts had to be quickly rewritten or postponed. The injury meant that Ball would have to limit her physical comedy and musical numbers and re-think the show’s overall dynamics. It also meant that her plans to start filming the musical film Mame would be put on hold until her injuries healed. The September 11, 1972 episode that kicked off this extended plot-line was titled “Lucy’s Big Break” (HL S5;E1).
To add to that, earlier in the day on September 11, 1972 Ball made her first appearance on Dinah Shore’s syndicated talk show “Dinah’s Place”. Lucy makes Irish coffee and tells Dinah how she broke her leg.
The night before this episode aired (September 10, 1972), Lucille Ball had appeared on “A Salute to Television’s 25th Anniversary” on ABC, getting an award alongside Bob Hope. Quite a busy 24 hours for Lucy fans!
1984
The week of September 11, 1984, Lucille Ball, now 73 years old, begins a week of appearances on the pantomime game show “Body Language” playing against Charles Nelson Reilly and hosted by Tom Kennedy. She returned to the show over Christmas week in 1984. Lucy was also depicted on the box cover of the board game of Body Language, as well as doing TV commercials for the game. The show managed only a fraction of the audience of other daytime games and CBS canceled the game in late 1985 after only one season on the air.
Through the years, many of Lucille Ball’s co-stars passed away on September 11:
1959 ~ Paul Douglas died at age 52. He played himself in “Lucy Wants A Career” (LDCH E9) which aired just five months before his death.
1970 ~ Chester Morris died at age 69. He appeared in Five Came Back (1939, above) and The Marines Fly High (1940) with Lucille Ball.
1987 ~ Lorne Green died at age 72. The star of NBC’s “Bonanza” from 1959 to 1973. He appeared with Lucille Ball on “Dean Martin’s 1968 Christmas Show,” “Dinah Shore’s Like Hep!”, “Swing Out Sweet Land,” and “Zenith’s A Salute to TV’s 25th Anniversary.”
1994 ~ Jessica Tandy died at age 85. Tandy and Lucille Ball were both recipients of “The Kennedy Center Honors” in December 1986. The ceremony was televised on CBS on Boxing Day 1986.
1998 ~ Dane Clark died at age 86. He was the star of Desilu’s “Wire Service” (1956-57), did two episode of Desilu’s “The Untouchables” (1962-63) and appeared with Desi Arnaz Jr. in “Police Story” in 1976.
2003 ~ John Ritter died at age 54. Lucille Ball was an outspoken fan of John Ritter, hosting a ‘best of’ special for his hit sitcom “Three’s Company” in 1982. Ritter guest-starred as himself on her final sitcom, “Life With Lucy” (1986).
2004 ~ Fred Ebb died at age 76. Ebb produced and wrote the Shirley MacLaine TV special “Gypsy in My Soul” (1976) that co-starred Lucille Ball.

19th PRIMETIME EMMY AWARDS
June 4, 1967
“The 19th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards” were held at the Century Plaza Hotel, Los Angeles, and broadcast on ABC, on June 4, 1967. The ceremony was hosted by Joey Bishop and Hugh Downs.
The nominees and winners, as they relate to Lucille Ball and Desilu Studios, were:
Outstanding Comedy Series
The winner was “The Monkees”on NBC.

Other nominees included the “The Andy Griffith Show” (filmed at Desilu), “Bewitched”, “Get Smart” and “Hogan’s Heroes”. “The Lucy Show”, which had just completed its fifth season, was not nominated. A year earlier, “The Lucy Show” featured "Hogan’s Heroes” star Bob Crane and John Banner (above), who did a cameo as a Sergeant Schultz-type character uttering his famous line “I know nothing!”
Outstanding Actress in a Leading Role in a Comedy Series
The winner was Lucille Ball as Lucy Carmichael on “The Lucy Show.”
This was Ball’s third acting Emmy, having also won for “I Love Lucy” in 1953 and 1955. She will win again for “The Lucy Show” in 1968, her last competitive acting Emmy.
Ball sat at a table with Gale Gordon and her husband Gary Morton. Clips of the their work are shown as the nominees names are read and Lucy’s brief clip is from “Lucy and the Rina-A-Ding Ring” (TLS S5;E5) with Gale Gordon. As her name was announced by Carl Reiner (co-presenting with Barbara Eden), Ball was stunned, saying “I don’t believe it.” The orchestra played the theme from “The Lucy Show.”

At the podium, she became visibly moved during her acceptance speech. While she mixes up her wins from the 1950s — thinking that her second Emmy came “because I had a baby” when that had been her first — she was clearly grateful for this honor from her peers.
Ball’s 1967 competition included Elizabeth Montgomery and Agnes Moorhead for “Bewitched” and Marlo Thomas for “That Girl”. Montgomery was then married to William Asher, who had directed Ball on “I Love Lucy.” Thomas’s father was Danny Thomas, Ball’s friend and collaborator on numerous projects.
Outstanding Actress in a Supporting Role in a Comedy Series
The winner was Frances Bavier a Aunt Bee on the Desilu-filmed “The Andy Griffith Show.”

Nancy Kulp, who was seen on “I Love Lucy” and “The Lucy Show”, was nominated for “The Beverly Hillbillies”.
Outstanding Actor in a Leading Role in a Comedy Series
The winner was Don Adams as Maxwell Smart on “Get Smart”.
Nominee Bob Crane of “Hogan’s Heroes” guest-starred as himself on “The Lucy Show” in 1966. The episode depicted Lucy and Crane making a war film, not unlike the setting of “Hogan’s Heroes.”
Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series
The winner was Don Knotts as Barney Fife on “The Andy Griffith Show,” his fifth Emmy for Supporting Actor in a Comedy, a record that still stands.
In 1973, Knotts guest starred on “Here’s Lucy,” as a cousin of Lucy’s boss and brother-in-law, Harry, played by Gale Gordon. Coincidentally, Gale Gordon was also nominated in this category for playing Mr. Mooney in “The Lucy Show.” Gordon was previously nominated in 1955 for “Our Miss Brooks”. He would be nominated two more times, the last time for “Here’s Lucy,” but never won.
Outstanding Drama Series
“Mission: Impossible” was the winner.
"Mission: Impossible’s” first season was filmed at Desilu and “Here’s Lucy” did a satire of the show titled “Lucy’s Impossible Mission” (HL S1;E6). The series also won for best Dramatic Writing.
Other nominees included Desilu’s “Star Trek”.
Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series
The winner was Barbara Bain as Cinnamon Carter on Desilu’s “Mission: Impossible.”
Bain was the first actress in the history of television to be awarded three consecutive Emmy Awards - 1967, 1968, and 1969 - all for the same role.
Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series
The winner was Bill Cosby as Alexander Scott on “I Spy”.
Martin Landau was nominated for Desilu’s “Mission: Impossible.” David Janssen was nominated for “The Fugitive,” a series alluded to when Lucy Carmichael is pursued by a one-armed fugitive on a 1966 episode of “The Lucy Show.”
Outstanding Variety Series
The winner was “The Andy Williams Show”.

Nominees included “The Dean Martin Show” which Lucille Ball appeared on three times and “The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson” on which Lucy also appeared several times.
Outstanding Musical Program
The winner was “Brigadoon” a television adaptation of the 1948 Broadway musical by Lerner and Loewe. It starred Robert Goulet, who had just appeared on Broadway in Lerner and Loewe’s Camelot. Goulet played himself (and two doppelgangers) on an October 1966 episode of “The Lucy Show.”
Outstanding Variety Show
The winner was “The Sid Caesar, Imogene Coca, Carl Reiner, Howard Morris Special" on CBS. In 1968, Sid Caesar guest starred as himself and his criminal doppelganger on “The Lucy Show.”
Outstanding Children’s Show
The winner was “Jack and The Beanstalk,” a Hanna-Barbera adaptation featuring the voice of Janet Waldo, who played Peggy on “I Love Lucy” and Lucy’s sister on “The Lucy Show.”
Achievement in Daytime Programming
The winner was “The Mike Douglas Show.” Lucille Ball made a dozen appearances on the talk show, including co-hosting for a week in 1978.
Outstanding Dramatic Program
The winner was “Death of a Salesman”, a television adaptation of the 1949 Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Arthur Miller. The title was alluded to in a 1953 episode of “I Love Lucy.”
Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Comedy
The winner was James Frawley for ”The Monkees”.
Maury Thompson was nominated for “The Lucy Show.” Thompson had directed 49 episodes of the series from 1965 to 1967. This was his only nomination.
In 1967, Emmy winner Lucille Ball had succeeded in making Desilu profitable again. Less than two months after the ceremony, she sold her shares of Desilu to Paramount Studios who renamed it Paramount Television. Lucille Ball formed Lucille Ball Productions (LBP) to produce “Here’s Lucy” while renting studio space from Paramount.
The dress that Lucille Ball wore to the Emmy Awards in 1967 later came up for auction. The custom made, pastel blue, green and pink abstract floral, floor-length gown was ornamented with strings of silver sequins overall. The gown came with a matching clutch.

LUCY AND MANNIX ARE HELD HOSTAGE
S4;E4 ~ October 4, 1971

Directed by Coby Ruskin ~ Written by Bob Carroll and Madelyn Davis
Synopsis
Lucy happens to see three crimes in one day. Convinced thugs are after Lucy, Harry contacts his old friend, private eye Joe Mannix. While trying to rescue Lucy from the bank robbers, Mannix and Lucy are kidnapped and held hostage.
Regular Cast
Lucille Ball (Lucy Carter), Gale Gordon (Harrison Otis Carter), Lucie Arnaz (Kim Carter)
Guest Cast

Mike Connors (Joe Mannix) began his screen career in 1952, but is probably best remembered as Joe Mannix, the role he plays here. He starred in the private detective series “Mannix” from 1967 to 1975, which ran on CBS concurrently with “Here's Lucy.” He was nominated for 5 Emmys and six Golden Globes and won a Golden Globe for the role in 1970. Connors reprised the role of Joe Mannix in a 1997 episode of “Diagnosis Murder” and in the 2003 film comedy Nobody Knows Anything! He died in January 2017.

Mary Jane Croft (Mary Jane) played Betty Ramsey during season six of “I Love Lucy. ” She also played Cynthia Harcourt in “Lucy is Envious” (ILL S3;E23) and Evelyn Bigsby in “Return Home from Europe” (ILL S5;E26). She played Audrey Simmons on “The Lucy Show” but when Lucy Carmichael moved to California, she played Mary Jane Lewis, the actor’s married name and the same one she uses on all 31 of her episodes of “Here’s Lucy. Her final acting credit was playing Midge Bowser on “Lucy Calls the President” (1977). She died in 1999 at the age of 83.

Marc Lawrence (Ruby, right) appeared on Broadway in three plays with the Group Theatre. On screen, Lawrence specialized in playing gangster roles. He previously played a mob boss in “Lucy and Ma Parker” (S3;E15). Coincidentally, between 1969 and 1974 Lawrence appeared in three episodes of “Mannix.” John Doucette (Vernon, left) first appeared with Lucille Ball in The Fuller Brush Girl (1950). In 1973 he did one episode of “Mannix” with Mike Connors.

Robert Foulk (Policeman) played the policeman on the Brooklyn subway platform in “Lucy and the Loving Cup” (ILL S6;E12) and a Los Angeles Detective in “Lucy Goes To A Hollywood Premiere” (TLS S4;E20). This is the fourth of his six characters, but his first of two policemen on “Here’s Lucy.”

Vince Howard (Policeman) was much more at home in hour-long crime dramas than in sitcoms. Many of his 125 TV and film credits were as law enforcement officials. Howard also played a policeman on “Lucy and the Ex-Con” (S1;E15). He did three episodes of “Mannix” with Mike Connors, one of which first aired three weeks after this episode of “Here's Lucy.”
The voice of the telephone operator was done by an uncredited performer.

“Mannix” was an hour-long crime drama that was saved from the scrap heap by Lucille Ball when she was in charge of Desilu Studios. CBS planned to cancel the show after one season, but Ball used her influence to convince them to renew it with the assurance that changes would be made. In the second season, Joe Mannix was changed into a more hard-boiled independent private detective. The changes worked and the series became a big hit running for eight seasons. It was the last successful TV show to be produced by Desilu. Lucille Ball's sitcoms shared many cast members with “Mannix”:
Monty O'Grady, Paul Picerni, Peggy Rea, Jay Novello, Ruth McDevitt, Elsa Lanchester, Maurice Marsac, Milton Berle, Howard Duff, Claude Akins, Rich Little, Natalie Schafer, Ruta Lee, Parley Baer, Army Archerd, Lurene Tuttle, Herbie Faye, Gail Bonney, Vivi Janiss, Stafford Repp, Boyd 'Red' Morgan, George DeNormand, Hans Moebus, Murray Pollack, Sig Frohlich, Shep Houghton, Jonathan Hole, Leoda Richards, Jack Berle, and Hayden Rorke.

This was the first episode filmed at Universal Studios after Lucille Ball Productions (LBP) left Paramount (formerly Desilu and RKO). Because “Mannix” was property of Paramount Television, not LBP, the series stayed at Paramount Studios for the duration of its run.

Harry gives Lucy's address as 4863 Valley Lawn Drive. She gives her Zip Code as 91041, which puts it in Sunland, California. She describes her home description as the second house from the corner, pink with blue shutters, with a big tree (named Irving) in the front yard.

Harry tells the crooks that he is claustrophobic. In real life, however, it was Lucille Ball who had claustrophobia, although she conquered it if she thought the comedy would benefit.

In this episode, Lucy becomes a plant lover who talks to her plants. Their names are Ruthie, Hugo, and Priscilla. Ruthie meets an untimely end in an attempt to stop a robbery.

In the episode's first half, Lucy, Harry, and Mary Jane talk about a policeman named Officer Maginetti. It is never stated if either one of the policemen in the final scene is named Officer Maginetti or not.

A distracted Lucy misses watering her plant and pours water into Harry's hat instead. When Harry puts it on, naturally he ends up soaking wet! Harry being wet is a staple of the “Here's Lucy” series.

Lucy mentions an Aunt Isabel. Mary Wickes played Isabel (above), another secretary in Lucy's building, in two previous episodes, but she was not Lucy's aunt. Wickes also played Lucy Carmichael's Aunt Agatha on “The Lucy Show,” but no character named Aunt Isabel has been seen (as of yet).

While tied up by the crooks, Lucy mentions the gangster films Little Caesar starring Edward G. Robinson and Angels with Dirty Faces starring Jimmy Cagney. Cagney was mentioned in “Lucy and Carol Burnett” (S3;E22, left) and Edward G. Robinson made a cameo appearance in “Lucy Goes To a Hollywood Premiere” (TLS S4;E20, right).
Lucy and Mannix are held hostage in a tan stucco house at the corner of Shelby and Fountain.

Crime has been the source of many “Lucy” sitcom episodes in the past:

“New Neighbors” (ILL S1;E21)

“Too Many Crooks” (ILL S3;E9)

“Lucy Cries Wolf” (ILL S4;E3)

“The Great Train Robbery” (ILL S5;E2)

“Lucy and the Great Bank Robbery” (TLS S3;E5)

“Lucy Makes a Pinch” (TLS S3;E8)

“Lucy's Impossible Mission” (S1;E6)

“Lucy and the Ex-Con” (S1;E15)

“Lucy and Viv Visit Tijuana” (S2;E19)

“Lucy’s Burglar Alarm” (S2;E7)

“Lucy and Wally Cox” (S2;E21)

“Lucy and Ma Parker” (S3;E15)

and even the previous episode, “Lucy and Harry's Italian Bombshell” (S4;E3), had Lucy and Kim encountering a burglar!

Doors! Doors! Doors! The door behind Lucy's desk at the office has changed from leading to another room to a closet. The door behind Harry's desk was originally a closet but was later transformed to a bathroom.

Wallpapered! Since the last time we saw the Carter home in “Lucy and Aladdin's Lamp” (S3;E21), there is new bright green wallpaper on the staircase. This may have been changed during the move from Paramount to Universal.
Where Do I Live? In “Lucy and Harry's Tonsils” (S2;E25) Harry gave his address as 4863 Valley Lawn Drive. This is the same address he gives the crooks when they ask where Lucy lives.

“Lucy and Mannix are Held Hostage” rates 4 Paper Hearts out of 5
The most unusual thing about this episode is that Mannix, a television character, lives in the same fictional world with the Carters instead of being Mike Connors, an actor and celebrity. Connors handles the physical comedy really well, and Lucy is a good match for him in the acting department. This is the second time “Here's Lucy” has used one of its own shows as the basis for an episode. They first tackled “Mission: Impossible” but changed all the character names from the series. It's too bad they never go around to doing a “Star Trek” parody!
