Lawrence Ross’s Blackballed: The Black + White Politics of Race on American Campuses

While in Carnegie’s Center for Diversity and Inclusion, Lawrence Ross walked in with an invitation to his 7:30 pm lecture November 11, 2018. As he discussed the many prejudices that plagues campuses across America, he points out the areas of which racism on American campuses occur: legacy, symbolism, racial micro-aggression, student groups like fraternities. He also spoke on 3 isms that also occur when racial injustices take place: individualize the person, minimize the situation, and trivializing the severity of the issue. These were often the cases when reading about concentrated poverty. Those living in economically disadvantaged communities always have to convince the gatekeepers – the government, the architect, the field researchers, university students- of their humanity. This also affects a student’s opportunity to receive quality education within a quality neighborhood; this also exposes children to higher education and has the power to diversify architecture as a profession, which leads to more effective ways to include community members within the design solutions for their physical environments. After all, diversity is being invited to the party and inclusion is being asked to dance.
